(Linda Eder - Great Voice)
(Not a voice.......an instrument)
(the best female singer of the great american standards.)
(The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder) This album presents the best of Linda's Broadawy voice. When artists have big, beautiful voices, I love it when they actually USE them, and in this album, Linda does. She hits some of those extraordinarily high notes in songs like "Unusual Way" and "Man of la Mancha". She uses her big Broadway-style voice for most of the songs. I listened to this album with headphones, and boy oh boy, did it get loud at points. This artist can BELT IT OUT. Some of the songs (especially the better-known) are changed around a bit to fit Linda's style. "On the Street Where You Live" is slower with a jazzy/blues sort of feel. "Edelweiss" has a slow tempo, and Linda uses her breathy voice for part of it (but also hits some of those high notes). I didn't recognize a lot of these songs, and I listen to a lot of Broadway. "On the Street Where You Live", "Some People", "Don't Rain on My Parade", "The Impossible Dream", and "Edelweiss" are some of the more well known songs. But even though I had never heard a lot of the songs, I enjoyed them immensely. Linda's absolutely beautiful, perfect, clear voice makes all of them worthwhile listening. Overall, if you like Broadway, you will probably enjoy this album, which takes some well known Broadway songs and "re-does" them a bit, but still creates an enjoyable listen. This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility. Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far. i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand, patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in "broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely "on the street where you live" captures you body and soul. i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it. The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002'sGoldwill be relieved that her follow-up,Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or ratheroverthe top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-worksCamille Claudel.--Elisabeth Vincentelli On the eagerly awaited Broadway My Way, Atlantic recording artist and acclaimed Broadway sensation Linda Eder performs classics including 'On the Street Where You Live' (from My Fair Lady), 'Edelweiss' (from The Sound of Music), 'Don't Rain On My Parade' (from Funny Girl) and 10 other great broadway songs performed in a whole new voice. 2003. (A voice teacher and early music fan)
(My favourite collection of sacred music)
(Battle at her glorious best)
(The music soars) Of corse, an amazing voice of Kathleen battle... but for this title, I was expecting "more grace", the titles are short and very different, more a "overview" low 'BATTLE'S VOICE IS LIKE A DIAMOND-PURE,CLEAR,RADIANT, AND BEAUTIFUL'. Critics often comment of Battle's ability to communicate directly with her audience, and that is certainly much in evidence in this recording. We all rejoice with her as we hear her sing 'Rejoice Greatly' and experience her sorrow as she renders the lovely 'Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?'
Versatility is a hallmark of Battle's artistic personality, a trait that is demonstrated by the range of period styles in this new recording of sacred music. Half of the program consists of selections by Bach and Handel, the greats of the Baroque Era. I am personally reminded of that wonderful performance of 'Semele' at Carnegie Hall; there is presently an award-winning recording of this opera that is still available on Amazon; features a star-studded cast that includes Battle-Horne-Chance and Ramey. Over the years she has included in her recitals arias from Bach's oratorios, and has performed on a recording with Wynton Marsalis:Baroque Duet.
The operas of Mozart have been a staple in her career; her roles include: Pamina in 'The Magic Flute' etc. I loved her in that one, as well as her performance with von Karajan in Mozart's 'Coronation mass'.
Echoes of Italian 'bel canto' and 'verismo' enhance this program with selections by Rossini and Mascagni, and further variety is added with songs by Wolf and Faure.
This recording has it all: an incredibly lovely voice, a variety of music by the 'greats' under the capable direction of Robert Sadin. For anyone who loves Kathleen Battle's voice, this is a real treasure, she never sounded better and more radiant. This is a selection of well known sacred songs but they sound fresh and lovely when sung by Kathleen. She performs two Ave Marias, one very famous, by Bach, and another which is rarely performed, written by Mascagni, and this one is really stunning. Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Pie Jesu from Faure's Requiem are also oustanding. The spiritual "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?" is another highlight. There are several movements from Bach cantatas, including the famous Bist du bei mir, and Handel's "O Had I Jubal's Lyre" and "Rejoice greatly", they will remind you of how incredible Battle is when she sings virtuosic Baroque music. And isn't the cover just beautiful? But get this album for the music, and you will rejoice greatly. While I agree with an earlier reviewer who recommends her Levine disk, I must disagree with the claim that this "Rejoice Greatly" is inferior to her two other recordings of it. Her conception is identical in all three performances, but to my ear this is by far the best. In her full Messiah with Andrew Davis, the recording has her so recessed there is no feeling of intimacy. In her Handel recital disk, she is better placed and in better voice, but her rhythm is insecure in the sixteenth-notes; she seems to be nervously pushing ahead of the beat. But on "Grace" she gets it just right. For whatever it may be worth, a fellow fan once had the chance to ask Battle herself about this, and as I understand it her response was, "Yeah, I don't know why, but I haven't been able to do Rejoice before or since as well as it went on Grace." Kathleen Battle's voice is exquisite and is suited for most of the pieces on the CD. Her rendition of Mascagni's Ave Maria is perhaps the best track, with the Schafe Konnen from Bach's Cantata No. 208 coming in a close second. Another highlight is the Laudate Dominum, delivered with so much skill and feeling.
Less successful was Rossini's Laudamus Te. Battle has a flexible, clear and delicate voice, but not one that's full-bodied enough to accommodate the style of music found in a piece as grand and strident as the Laudamus Te. There is a sense of strain when she sings it, though it is by no means entirely unsuccessful. Rerations < Grace >

customer 's review (First "Lum" movie is a real treat for fans of the TV series)
(A classic)
(Classic Rumiko charm and entertainment!)
(One of the funniest UY shows yet!) URUSEI YATSURA: ONLY YOU (1983) was the first theatrical movie spun off from the popular animated sci-fi teen comedy TV series, "Urusei Yatsura," based on Rumiko Takahashi's long-running manga about the misadventures of horny high-schooler Ataru and his stormy relationship with his shapely, horned, tiger-skin-bikini'd alien "wife," Lum. It offers a full-blown science fiction setting, complete with the transport of Ataru and all his high school chums to an exotic city on another planet, as the backdrop for an imaginative, funny and, ultimately quite touching romantic farce that sustains its manic pace of comic suspense to the very end. To make a long, eventful story short, Ataru finds himself engaged, inadvertently, to yet another gorgeous alien, the privileged and pampered Lady Elle, and is taken to her planet with Lum and all her friends in hot pursuit. Ataru shows no unwillingness to go, seeing as how this is a golden opportunity to meet a new hot babe-and get away from the clinging Lum. However, after a short-lived idyll with Elle in her palace, Ataru suddenly sees her true colors and is soon praying for Lum&co. to come and prevent the wedding.Fans of the series will enjoy this immensely, thanks to the way the writers have fashioned a story that makes clever use of all the main characters and a plot that takes them to the far reaches of the galaxy, back and forth in time, and finally back to their provincial little Japanese suburb. Those fans with an eye for anime babes will find plenty of female alien sex appeal on display here, thanks to the prominent roles played by Elle, Lum, and Lum's array of provocatively costumed girlfriends, not to mention Elle's army of female guards. The animation is more fluid than that of the TV series, with lots of intricate chases and battle action, and the design much more detailed. The film was directed by Mamoru Oshii, who also directed the first few seasons of the TV series and the second UY movie, BEAUTIFUL DREAMER. (He would go on to direct the PATLABOR movies and the anime sci-fi classic, GHOST IN THE SHELL.) Yes this movie is 19 years old. No one dies. There are no huge anime breasts. There are no giant mecha with extension cords. What dies it have then? Laugh after Laugh after Laugh. Urusei Yatsura is one of the greatest anime series in the history of Japanese animation, and although Only You does not hold up to the next movie Beautiful Dreamer, it is a gem of a film. The story starts 11 years ago in Ataru Moroboshi's past he plays shadow tag with a little girl, and says that he steps on her shadow. The girl said that on her planet that stepping on another's is a marriage proposel. Well, she leaves. Ataru becomes the biggest lecher in the world, but has the complete devotion of the oni princess Lum. Well, the little girl grows up and is readfy for Ataru to marry her. Of course Ataru wants to run away from Lum as quickly as possible, and it seems that a shield has been placed on Ataru to keep Lum from shocking him. What is a green-haired tiger striped bikini sportting alien princess going to do? Marry him first! The movie is fun, but suffers because all of the characters are not fleshed out enough, and some folks favorite characters might be left out or play bit roles: Sakura, cherry, etc. However, the movie is very entertaining and should be enjoyed. Urusei Yatsura needs more attention in America's anime market. It is a great series that shouldn't be forgotten. I'm sure most people know Oshii Mamoru from his sci-fi anime of a late eighties and nineties such as Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell. However, most fans of his later work don't seem to pay much attention to his earlier work on the Urusei Yatsura TV series and the first two of its six subsequent movies. I suppose the Gibson-esque world of Ghost in the Shell is considered much more interesting by most than the Flash Gordon hamminess of Lum, but if one looks closely they will find just as thoughtfully crafted work and, in the case of the first movie, an excellent example of how a ridiculous idea can be skillfully molded into engaging, light-hearted entertainment.By the time Urusei Yatsura: Only You came out in 1983, Lum already had an extremely strong following in Japan in both the manga and the TV series, and thus faced the typical problem all well-established series do when being converted into major motion pictures: how to include all the conventions of the series but also give the film a compelling story that anyone can enjoy. Fortunately, Only You does this remarkably well. For the uninitiated, Urusei Yatsura: Only You tells the story of Ataru Moroboshi, the most lecherous man in the Universe, and Lum, the bikini-clad space princess that is determined to tame him. Other characters include Shinobu, Ataru's would-be girlfriend; Mendou, the richest man in the world and rival of Ataru; and Benten, Lum's best friend and space biker-chick who wears chains. There are several dozen other Urusei Yatsura regulars that appear in this movie also, but the plot basically focuses around Lum and Ataru in this movie with most of the other characters being regulated to cameos of varying degrees. What the film does really well is capture the spirit, energy, and fun of Takahashi Rumiko's manga and the TV series while juggling situations and characters that effectively serve their purpose without bogging down the over all pace of the story. The plot involves Ataru's kidnapping by a rival space princess named Elle who wants to marry him, and Lum's attempts to win him back. From there the story takes off into an epic space farce that should make any fan of anime as well as classic sci-fi smile. The film contains several well-crafted scenes. The prologue where children are shown only in silhouette is cute and effective, and the title sequence is so wonderfully overdone that it refrains from saying"The Movie!"only by sheer force of will. Another scene I like is the first space battle that takes place between Lum's planet and Elle's planet. There is a very funny scene where Oshii has some fun cross-cutting between Ataru's refusal to admit he loves Lum and the stalwart conviction of the pilots who are fighting to defend their marriage. The visit to Planet Elle itself is another memorable sequence. Seemingly constructed in the shape of a giant rose, it invokes the kind of tacky paradise image that classic Star Trek only wished for. This is also where the final sequence of the film takes place, where Lum and her friends wage a bizarre battle to crash Elle's wedding. I have to admit there is something extremely endearing about beautiful little Lum piloting her fighter through a gauntlet to save the most worthless man in the Universe, and the final scene, which seems directly inspired by The Graduate, is so romantically cornball that I can't help but be utterly won over every time I see it. The reason why this movie works is because Oshii Mamoru has the decency to take it seriously. He does not condescend to the material at all, and stays firmly focused on its goofiest obsessions even in their tackiest extremities. The musical choices he makes in the film add to this considerably. Scoring the film like a old sci-fi serial is a delightful addition, and the use of songs and musical numbers throughout the film are warmly affectionate in the way that they have the decency to focus on the sentiment of the moment amidst the farce. Urusei Yatsura: Only You is excellent light entertainment. It is likable, fast-paced, tacky, absurd, and completely silly. In other words, it is everything a Lum movie should be. I recomend both this movie and Beutiful Dreamer. Both made me laugh my brains out!

customer 's review (Any movie that directly rips off Death Ring and Redline gets 5 stars)
(Today you get bored...)
(More Seagal violence and revenge)
(A Good Day Nonetheless)
(One of Seagal's Best DTV Movies) First let us, Sid the Elf, explain that title. This film stole the basic plot principle from Redline that maybe if the audiance is confused enough, they won't realize we shot this movie with recycled footage, a few thousand bucks, and no permits. Then, they wanted to name the film, "You Talk Too Much," but they couldn't get the naming rights from the almighty Death Ring. Rumor has it that the sticking point on that was Seagal wouldn't pony up the cash to buy Chad McQueen a rhinestone studded leather vest with "Chad" adorning the back. Oh well.
Honestly, Sid wouldn't be able to give a coherent summary of the plot for this one. That could be because there was no plot. Or, more likely, Seagal messed this one up real bad. Let us explain: It is widely known that the producers of this film sued Seagal for showing up eggregiously late for filming and changing the script on the fly. Sid's theory is that Seagal concocted a brilliant plot for the flick, but his wonderful ideas didn't across because he was trying to dispense them to the rest of this wonderful cast through mouthfuls of his ever-present White Castle Crave Case and quart of Wild Turkey. This movie was so great that it would be covered in the first week of Action B 101 at Sid the Elf University. It was so great that it has a DMF(Don Mattingly Factor) and a KHF(Keith Hernandez Factor) of one. It was also so great that it garnered the famous Robert Downey Sr. apperance. And it was so great that it deserves Drive-In Totals.

1023 shots fired
1 exploding chopper
1 B ripoff of a 2Pac song
1 killer mullet on the giant head of Cool Papa Seagal himself...
...and 43 homoerotic looks/exchanges between Seagal and Treach
...unless you don't watch this. The only explanation (which is no excuse) is that Seagal is dead, and nobody cared to let him know......What a pity... Seagulls are white crows...Trying to use a spiritualistic justification for extremes of violence, this movie moves from one scene of death to another. The robinhood theme just doesn't work when the money is drug money to start with? From prison breaks to killing the big guys behind the scenes, this movies seems to be about revenge more than any sort of good doing? I wish I could say the plot or the acting were good: I think only the martial arts had any quality. Ironic: About twelve minutes into the film, Steven Seagal asks one of the film's villains "Do I look sleepy?" Not a minute later, his girlfriend asks him "Why are you whispering?" Feel free to chuckle.
Seagal's 22nd action feature stars him as a virtuous thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Upon the urging of his pseudo-psychic girlfriend (Mari Morrow, "Nikita Blues"), he tries to go clean and takes a truck-driving job from a shady fellow (Kevin Tighe, "Escape To Witch Mountain"), but is double-crossed when it turns out that the job is a heist. Sent to prison, he quickly buddies up with an inmate called Ice Kool (Anthony "Treach" Criss, "Face"), breaks out, and pursues his turncoat-of-a-boss.
As bad as Steven Seagal's DTV outings have been, "Today You Die" is a surprisingly decent bit of action that, at times, reminded me of the fun-yet-brainless 80s-90s action flicks of yesterday. Of course, there is no way to turn back the hands of time, and yes: Seagal still looks overweight, there is some dubbing of his voice, and the extended storyline (with its useless tangents and plotholes) and dialogue are silly enough to kill off a few brain cells. But while "Today" doesn't match "Urban Justice", it's better than the likes of "The Foreigner" or "Attack Force" by leaps and bounds for the fact that it chooses to focus on fun rather than pretending to be intelligent.
The best example of this is probably the car chase near the beginning of the film: it's fast-paced, exciting, shot well, and has a few one-liners thrown in for good measure. In addition, the handful of fight scenes and shootouts in the film are satisfactory as well; Seagal vs. bodyguards near the beginning and the gang confrontation close to the end are particularly attention-worthy. The supporting cast also works well for once: the afore-mentioned names are alert and add to the plot, as do Sarah Buxton ("Devil's Highway") as Agent Knowles and Nick Mancuso ("Ticket To Heaven") as the hiss-able Agent Saunders.
If able to ignore the use of stock footage from the prison break scene (from Wesley Snipes' "Undisputed"), Seagal fans should find "Today You Die" a thoroughly enjoyable bit of violent fluff. Essentially, if you tolerated films like "Into The Sun" and "Mercenary For Justice", liking this movie won't be too difficult. This is one of Seagal's better DTV titles. It features some cool action sequences and tons of classic Steven Seagal charm. He and Treach make for a particularly fun pairing and play off each other nicely. Unlike many of Seagal's earlier DTV movies, this one gives him plenty of nice character moments. The tone of the movie is much more fun and in keeping with some of his best movies like Hard to Kill and Out for Justice. If you are a fan of Steven Seagal as a personality, then you will really enjoy this movie. I give a lot of credit to the director Don E. Fauntleroy. He also directed Seagal's very best DTV movie, Urban Justice. He knows how to stage a nice action sequence and use Seagal correctly. I hope they make more movies together in the future! Count on Steven Seagal to pack a devastating punch - this time with a little something extra. Not only does he prove the fist is mightier than the gun, he uses the supernatural to dish out bone-crunching punishment. Harlan Banks (Seagal) is hired to drive a delivery truck in Vegas. He picks up $20 million in cash, when his double-crossing cohort blasts two security men and then holds his gun to Banks' head, ordering him to drive. After one of the most extraordinary chase scenes ever filmed on the streets of Vegas, Banks ends up in prison. But with a little mystical assistance, he escapes to unleash an explosive, unearthly vengeance. Rerations < Today You Die [VHS] >
