So it is the usual 2 childhood friends turned lovers but there is not one dull page. Both Atsu (cat) and Junya (dog) are such adorable characters as they dance around each other and struggle with their insecurities and jealousies. Junya is just my type of seme, gorgeous and moody, while Atsu is the endearing uke and with his penchant to please, he is often taken for granted by friends much to Junya's chagrin. The last chapter maybe a bit uncomfortable for some but it is also the part of the story with a heavier tone. All the explicit sex scenes are pure delight. The one in the school is especially sexy. Add a cat and a dog into the mix sometimes, and the sex is never dull. LOL. As for the chibis with their cat/dog ears and tails, they are just so cute! Over 220 pages, Dog X Cat is pure charm.』 『University students Junya and Atsu have been friends since they were kids. (If you've come this far, there is already no turning back: Resign yourself to this book.) 『Volume three of the Only the Ring Finger Knows novel series, The Ring Finger Falls Silent, suffers many of the same problems that its predecessor, The Left Hand Dreams of Him, did. Again it is translated by Duane Johnson, and again it suffers many instances of awkward sentence structure, and particularly very confusing dialogue and unquoted or even not so much as clearly defined thoughts. It is however an improvement in quality over the last volume (did DMP perhaps read my previous review and take notes? Too much to hope for, I know...), which was almost laughable for its many typographic and grammatical errors. There were also a number of instances of hyphens attached to the word "in" and a word to follow it, that seemed very out of place (was I the only one drawn to this?).
Odagiri's illustrations are again beautifully drawn, but of course, as in volume 2, they are out of place. Each of them seem to be several pages late in this volume, and in a few of the more pivotal moments, the allure that would have been added to the scene is lost and the scene has changed focus by the time the reader gets to experience the illustration. Very unfortunate.
That aside, this installment doesn't hold quite as much emotional power as the previous two installments. As the loyal readers, which if you have followed these awkward DMP localizations you must be to plow through a third book, we get our Yuichi/Wataru fix satisfied. Their love is as strong for each other as ever, but always at a difficult price. Their relationship is only known to a few, and the number of people who know and do not approve is on the rise, as we discovered in volume 2. Shohei in particular makes his intentions and reasonings behind his attitude towards his younger brother's relationship known and he hatches a plot to drive a wedge between them in part 2, Your Confession in Both Hands. For his part, Asaka in part 1, also makes his intentions, long suspected by Yuichi, and us, known to Wataru as well with some forward and desperate, and ultimately hopeless, actions. Don't worry though, everything, like it always does to fill our hearts with warmth reading the books of this wonderful series, works out just fine for our boys in the end.
The Ring Finger Falls Silent is quite a bit longer that the second novel, which itself was quite a bit longer than the first novel (about 50 pages increased each volume) and therefore took me an extra hour or two to get through. More for your money I suppose.
The love scenes are more descriptive in this volume, for those who are interested in the graphic romantic bits, but there are fewer scenes of Yuichi an Wataru's physical relationship. Instead of being merely flowery some actual spacial detail is provided, though it still retains the beauty of Kannagi's poetic style.
The afterward by Kannagi herself is probably the most hopeful part in the whole book, though. Within those few pages we are revealed that this storyline is not quite done with and we can look ahead to more novels from our fair author and her loyal illustrator chronicalling the deep love and bond of our heroes, Yuichi and Wataru, in the coming years.』 『After all the studying he did for his exams, sacrificing time with his boyfriend Yuichi, Wataru gets a measly C-average on his summer prep test. Yuichi's college classmate Asaka offers to tutor him, and he eagerly accepts. That is why the first volume has a lot of explaining and is the least interesting volume. Being impressed by the OVA I decided to buy the books and I'm glad I did.
This is one of the most interesting, detailed and sexiest stories I have read. The OVA was good in itself but these books add so much more interesting background that I think everybody who liked the OVA should read these books. After reading them it is hard to let go. From the beginning Riki is a real person, Iason starts living in volume 3, when finally we can read his mind.
For a foreigner, like myself, the English is not the easiest I have read, but can be done without a dictionary.
Very important: this is not a manga, but a novel. I overlooked that when I bought these books. The few images in the book are nice, although more images would have been even greater. This story has so much depth, that this is very difficult to captivate in solely a manga, so I'm fine with this story being a novel.
I think this story will remain one of my favourite yaoi, it is that impressing.』

(Finally the book(s) to match the anime!) 『I caught the Ai no Kusabi anime on Veoh.com just a few weeks ago and thought it must have been a really old movie since it was obviously a Japanese anime originally on VHS that someone had put onto their computer and subtitled in English. And since most animes are originally mangas or serialized in mangazines in Japan, I did a little digging and found out I was correct by hitting up Wikipedia for a more thorough understanding of what I'd watched. And then to find out that it had finally been released in book form with all the back story--I had to have it!
I'm really not disappointed in anything except the price to quantity ratio. Sure there are the occasional errors, but if you buy yaoi and BL books on a regular basis that just seems the norm right now. So until yaoi and BL become mainstream areas of publishing, I'm willing to give a tiny bit of slack. Still, I have a feeling that someone thinks this is a "cash cow" and I'm not saying that it's only the publisher holding out their hand for the funds.
Unlike many BL and yaoi stories, this isn't just a bunch of sex scenes or a heterosexual story made into a homosexual story. This is an old story that was liked well enough that it was made into a well drawn, quality produced anime for it's fan base. And like old stories that stand the test of time (the anime still stands as a decent piece of work 15 years later), this story will be one that you will return to time and again in the future.
Buy it.
UPDATE: I've received up to book four now and I'm greatly anticipating book five. Our writer has tinkered with the book slightly so although we have MUCH more insight into the characters and these changes have definitely made it different from the anime movie of old, the basics remain the same.
Now, I was wrong about the price to quantity ratio after having read most of the series. The artwork is the same and yet new. After a few rereads (yes, I had to read them again because they're that good), there are fewer typos than I thought throughout the four books and it was a welcome surprise.
Now for those of you wondering (and for clarification), this is a NOVEL with a few page size images of the characters in alignment with action to the story NOT a graphic novel with all drawn panels and some dialogue as if it was copied from stills of the movie or vice versa. I've had a few friends (to whom I loaned the first few books) tell me they were surprised it was a book and not a comic. These same friends had seen the movie and routinely buy Yaoi graphic novels just like I do. I've since told them to stop bending the corners and getting chocolate on my pages and get their own danged books. They're well worth it!!
