As evident in her other manga (Delivery Cupid) Michalski has a flair for eccentric characters. Here, Ukyo, a soon to be Yakuza boss, had fallen head-over-heals for adorable shop owner's son Kakeru. Alas, Kakeru has been harassed by a rival Yakuza clan and therefore hates all Yakuza. What is Ukyo to do to woo his love? 1) Talk it out as a rational human being? 2) Give up? 3) Concoct a crazy scheme? 3 - Crazy scheme it is! He poses as a starving homeless man in need of a job, sure that without his usual sunglasses and flashy suit, Kakeru will never see through such a clever disguise and recognize him! Ukyo is a helpful shoulder to lean on for Kakeru in his shop assistant form, and a demanding and rough pursuer as his Yakuza self, and in both guises he is a handsome and interesting character. The author clearly enjoys drawing Ukyo as he reacts to the eccentric ramblings of his perverted mind, and Kakeru is a cute and sweet boy, worthy of his adoration. Though they do not seal the deal physically in volume one; there is mention of a potential second volume which would surely deliver. I love Yakuza Yaoi and this one is delightful. There is a lighthearted and enjoyable plot here as Ukyo, the son of a powerful Yakuza boss tries to woo Kakeru, the son of a noodle shop owner. But Kakeru hates the Yakuza as the Yakuza (a rival gang) is the very reason for his family's plight and his father's coma state in the hospital. What is the love struck Ukyo to do? Kakeru is your typical endearing uke but Ukyo's character is irresistible and such a sexy hunk as he rescues his beloved from the rival gang's boss. But when it comes to declaring his love you just have to love a cool seme who becomes so unsure and vulnerable. Love CJ Michalski's style and such a pity this is only her 2nd licensed work in the States. Looking forward to more on our cool Yakuza boss and his "peasant girl". The special of the day is hot, spicy love to go! Ukyo is the handsome, yet spoiled, son of the most powerful Yakuza boss in the region. One day, after running from a rival gang, Ukyo retreats to a noodle shop, where he instantly falls in love with the shop owner's adorable son, Kakeru. (A Must Have) I try to remind myself that this is fiction because a Christian Knight and a Muslim General.Such physical act of desire is punishable by death .They are not Greek or maybe I should pretend they are Greek in costume. Other than that the bed or sex scenes are pretty graphic ,nothing is blurred, the main charcaters are likable, story would be better if the manga is a series .In this book, the conflict is not resolved at all . So far I have not seen any hint of book 2 which makes it frustrating. I like the illustrations alot if there was a artbook for it, I will get one. This manga has your typical dark hair tall manly seme and light hair smaller pretty boy uke. Good night I loved this title! The artwork was divine (the mangaka drew the men with these long lovely eyelashes and it made their eyes smolder *insert squee*) and the plot was actually rather solid. If you took out all the explict scenes it would have still read as an impressive story, which is a good thing. However, the explict scenes are there and goodness aren't they detailed. No glowing or invisible man parts in this book! The interaction between the two main characters is romantic in it's own way. Leonard, though the uke (submissive/bottom/receiver) isn't by any means the weak, virginal type. He holds his own and is only the uke because he sacrafices himself for the sake of his troops. Though humiliated he understands that he chose the position that he is in, so there isn't any outward dislike toward Jamal, the man that he is now enslaved to. Jamal, though technically the enemy is a noble man and very likeable, he isn't mean to Leonard and actually admires the knight for his scarafice. Leonard finds himself drawn to Jamal though he know he shouldn't and early on he admits that Jamal can make his body quite needy. You find yourself rooting for the odd couple to find their footing and figure things out, even while others are getting in their way (Isaac, Jamal's hansome adjutant and de la Tour, Leonard's former commander). It's a well paced, sexy, interresting read and well worth the money. I am looking forward to the next volume and hope it comes out soon! I must have liked this book because I keep reading parts of it over and over, and it totally turned me on. BUT...it's really screwed up for an Ottoman army general to tell a European Crusader (cross emblem and all) to strip from the waist down in front of all his men, then to start doing stuff to him, and eventually to just get down on the ground and hump him in front of the army. Obviously yaoi is totally unbelievable to begin with, and I suspend my disbelief, because whatever you know? It's like an alternate world where gay guys act like girls want. It doesn't depict reality. Still, even I was like: What the heck is this? The first time I read it I wasn't turned on by that scene. I was like: Ew. Not cool. And: Are you kidding me? But then you read the rest of the book with scenes like the same crusader going around the castle hallways with Mr. Happy sticking out of his clothes (standing in attention). It's like a whole scene of him going around like that, in front of servants and everything. Then they get back to the room and the other guy points it out like the guy didn't realize it. And other scenes where one of the guys who watched the embarrassing scene from the beginning is just as slutty as the rest, and apparently the Sultan has a boytoy too. Ok, so I admit I got into the ridiculous crazy shameless sex all over the place. Even so, I have to give this four stars. What keeps this book from going from: 'Yay, hot crazy yaoi sex, yum!' to 'Oh man, seriously good, I worship this mangaka,' is the shamelessness. I mean, if in that first scene the general had just taken the crusader guy into a tent to do that stuff it wouldn't have been so ridiculous. And the guy going around with his pee-pee sticking out in the hallway is just...goofy. Like a porno directed by Chi-chi Larue or something. You still watch it and get hot, but you wish that it could have some sweet dark intimacy that makes your heart twitter, so that the hot sex is more meaningful. (Also the ending sucked, but I assume there's another volume coming). I really hope this mangaka turns this corner because she is awesome. There's so many cookie-cutter schoolboy mangaka doing such bland uninspiring stories. We all know the best yaoi is usually the stuff that involves more than drawing school uniforms. The mangaka who pull off great detailed art like this deserve just as good stories. This could get close to Ayano Yamane greatness, she just needs to make the sex more intimate. Black Sun has quickly turned into one of my new favorites and every time I read it, I like it more and more. The story is one of military conflict between the Monastic Knights and Middle Eastern soldiers. Prince Leonard de Limbourg has temporarily been placed in charge of the Gerun Fortress during which time he and his 200 Monastic Knights are attacked by General Jamal Jan and his 20,000 soldiers. Not exactly a fair fight and one that spells disaster for our poor Prince. Prince Leonard can see defeat on the horizon and decides to surrender himself and the fortress to General Jamal in return for his soldiers' safe escape. The remainder of the story tells of Prince Leonard's imprisonment by General Jamal, his life as his sex toy and the budding relationship that causes Leonard to face some difficult choices. If you are looking for a steamy sexually explicit yaoi manga, you've found it. The sex scenes are hot, plentiful, varied and the men themselves are gorgeous. It is definitely an explicitly drawn manga and if there is any censorship to the sexual scenes, it will be hard to find (no complaints here!). Uki Ogasawara is quickly turning into one of my favorite boys' love authors. Her men are gorgeous and the sexual positions are varied and believable. If she has any faults it is that some of her characters tend to look very similar to one another and from title to title, a common problem among many mangaka. However, the two main characters of this title are beautifully contrasted with Jamal having dark skin, hair and eyes and an amazingly drawn body and Leonard with blond hair and blue/gray eyes and although slightly smaller, no less manly (except for maybe some of the rather feminine outfits Jamal likes to put him in). Her illustrations are nicely done and the clothing of the various characters is absolutely gorgeous. You'll be hard pressed to find a single unattractive character in this one. It appears that this is to be a continuing series as the book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger so I do hope that 801 Media plans on publishing the follow up. The translation is nicely done and I had no difficulty following the speech bubbles. As far as the over all plot, it's better than most but I felt Leonard fell a little too quickly for the man who sexually humiliated him so early on. Plus Leonard is a Monastic Knight, which makes him a knight of God so to speak, so would his feelings for another man come so quickly or at all for that matter? Well, it is a boys' love title so one can't really delve too much into trying to make the plot make sense or you'll just drive yourself crazy. Either way, this is a title I highly recommend to those who like explicit sex. If you want a fluffy yaoi title, steer clear of this one. Characters = A- Plot = B+ Sexual Content = A+ Translation = A Illustrations/Book Design = A Overall Grade = A The story is interesting and exhilarating. A pure knight (Leonard) is taken hostage in exchange for his soldier's lives. He had thought he was going to be killed, but his captor, Jamal, quickly shows him exactly what type of hostage he will be. In the beginning Jamal treats him simply as his most favorite toy, but as the story progresses deeper motivations come into play. For his part, Leonard is clearly angry and bewildered by the situation, but comes to have a pull toward Jamal that begins to go beyond the physical. The last scene in the main story highlights this, and really made me want to read the next book. I am in agreement with the other reviewer, and hope that this Yaoi continues here in the U.S. To finish, the artwork is superb, with wonderful character detail, and the sex scenes are explicit and numerous. Gerun Fortress, under the command of Officer Leonard de Limbourg, is attacked by the prestigious general Jemaru Jan of the Middle Eastern Empire. With no hope of winning, Leonard offers his head in exchange for the safety of any survivors left in the fortress. But Jemaru isn't into executions, and torturing prisoners of war is much more interesting. Forced to sleep with a man that is his enemy, Leonard's feelings of shame overtake his mind, but lust overtakes his body...
