(A silly, enjoyable 'odd couple')
(A little confused by the 18+ rating) the dialog was fresh and interesting (and often times, unexpected!), the pacing was fantastic, the art was beautiful, and the character interaction was incredibly fun. :)
this is one of the few manga that got me to LOL. and it was blush-worthy at the same time! i prize works that can accomplish this. (check out "Take me to Heaven" as well for that sort of thing. don't let it's froofy cover put you off, the tone of the manga is not reflected in that. the art style is more occult/horror and the ghosts are not done in a cartoony silly way at all.)
my only gripe would be that it ends in one volume. i would have loved there to be more to read on this, but then again i would hate if it dragged by being overextended. as it was, the volume was wrapped up well, though you could see where the story *could* continue.
p.s. the XXX was hot xD very well done, and certainly not boring like it is in so many yaoi mangas. you can tell the mangaka took her time with this one.
advice: buy it. Impoverished (yet gifted) peasant Eugene is interested only in his studies.
Apparently handsome young princes really dig nerdy young men who continually rebuff their advances. Or perhaps it's just the crazy ones? And so we meet the other lover in this novel, Prince Willis. He pursues (i.e. stalks) Eugene and plays with the boy much like a cat batting around a favorite stuffed mouse.
This is not your typical Yaoi romance, as the romance aspect is flimsy, but do not let that deter you. The draw in this manga is the wonderful interaction between Eugene (a comic straight man if ever there was) and crazy-trickster Willis (a comic if ever there was).
The prince is an interesting character, a pretty blond man who utters inanities with a completely straight face. And Eugene, instead of running screaming from the crazy, responds with a dry rejoinder every time. It's a blast to read.
Does this romance make a lot of sense? No. Is it a lot of fun? Yes!
The artwork is pleasing, but of a style that may be distracting as the lines are very flowy and light, not clean and with clear definition. Additionally, there is not very much actual Yaoi here, the sexuality stems from suggestions and allusions from the prince, which add to the fun. I was a little confused by the 18+ rating. Usually it has an 18+ rating if there are graphic pictures (usually sexual in nature). However, I don't this even had a sex scene in it so I was a bit befuddled. However there is a part where a big ole grizzly (extremely hairy) teacher gets down and ready to get dirty with one of the characters, while he (the grizzly) is pretending to be a 14 year old girl who wants to be ravished....but - still - I think that could of tested a 13+ rating - maybe a 16+ at the most. Either way, even if I think this one probably should of been a 16+, it was still kind of cute. Not to much of a developmental relationship, more of a, you are this now and that's how it is kind of thing. Would of loved to seen more and more relationship development. Maybe more romantic? lol. This is one of those where one wants a partnership and the other one definitely doesn't (although gives in every now and then). So if you like that type then definitely get it. But I do say, the coverwork and a few of the chapter cover art work pages are very good. Playing on a s&m or BDSM kind of feel (although believe me there really isn't any of that in the book) it's much more "symbolic" meaning than literal. Although I probably wouldn't of minded to see some of it be literal lol. Still, the art was good and some parts were funny. I give it a 2.5 out of 5. Kudos. Brilliant young Eugene has to hit the books both day and night! After all, as an impoverished scholarship student, he's got to keep his grades high or he'll get expelled. Too bad he's attracted the attention of the school's most sought-after guy...the incredible Prince Willis! Why is a royal hunk obsessed with a scrawny, fussy nerd? And what's with that tattoo pen?! It looks like this celebrity couple is set to steal the front page of every tabloid.
Tricky Prince is a tantalizing blend of laughter, luxury...and love! Gorgeous Prince Willis can have anything he wants, but a mere yacht or mansion simply can't compare to his treasured friendship with the shy and sweet Eugene. But it's going to take a lot more than riches and fame to win Eugene's affection. Will royalty reign supreme, or will the lowly pauper seize power and break a fragile heart? (Aggravating book)
(Sexy mind games...) Kou leaves home to get away from his stepbrother Naruki whom he is in love with. His roommate Yoshino, my favorite character, (intelligent and calculating) has his eye on Kou. Well, here comes Naruki, enrolling in Kou's school, to Kou's chagrin, and emitting uke phermones far and wide. To protect Naruki, Yoshino hypnotises Naruki to be more aggressive, but not in the way Kou thought he would. When Naruki is threatened romantically he turns into an aggressive seme. I find the flipflopping of his personality hilarious. And to make matters worse, Kou's planned seduction of Naruki backfires and he becomes the one seduced. Well, Yoshino can't let this continue to happen so he tries to undo the hypnosis, but .... things have changed. This author has really teased us with the suggestive ending. I really wanted to see the final action but I had to use my imagination. I would love it if there was a sequel. There is sex but it's not graphic. I just liked the "comedy of errors" feel and I was chuckling as I read it. This is not in the same league as Future Lovers, and serious books like Black Sun or Vanilla, but it made me laugh and I have reread it several times. I've become a pretty easy-going Boy Love (BL) book reader. There were lots of things about BL books that bothered me - no means yes, dubious consent, coercion - that I learned to accept as as part of the tropes of the genre. Over the top, utterly ridiculous plots are also part of the genre, and most of the time I could roll with them. But not here.
There's a complicated love triangle in Double Trouble, but the element that made me hit the wall is the fact that one boy's personality is messed with through hypnosis, causing him a seemingly permanent personality disorder. And there are times when neither of the other boys, who did the damage in the first place, try to actually fix the problem.
In other words, the main story is a moral quagmire in the name of a wacky plot, and I just couldn't roll with it. Add to this the fact that the main story ends without any resolution, and I was left disappointed in every way. There is a sweet side story, which is how this book earned its stars.
To add insult to injury, Takashi Kanzaki is perhaps best known in English translation for her art and detailed depiction of sex scenes. However, because this is an early work by the mangaka licensed by June, the adult scenes are all of typical June quality, which means a lot of cutting away just when it's getting good.
So, difficult, convoluted, morally reprehensible plot, mild sex scenes, pretty art, and one sweet side story rate two stars and a place on my to-sell pile. Takashi Kanzaki's bishies are hot, their sex scenes are really hot, their forbidden relationships are hot, her mangas are always hot. Double Trouble is no exception. The blond uke (who views himself as a seme) is in love with his sweet innocent older stepbrother so he moves out of his house to avoid molesting him. Then the older brother follows his younger brother to the same dormitory and has a harem of men who want to have relations with him following him around. In order to protect his precious brother the uke and his roommate (who is in love with the uke) hypnotize him. Now whenever the brother is sexually aroused he turns into an aggressive seme. This plot is pretty cool. The only thing I really didn't like was that there is no clear winner in the fight for the ukes affections. (I loved the aggressive seme brother) Kou is staying at the dorm of Seiran Academy High School to prevent himself from acting on his love for his sweet and meek stepbrother Naruki. But Naruki follows him to Seiran! Now, Kou has to protect Naruki not only from himself, but from other students who want to have innocent Naruki for themselves. Enter Yoshino, Kou's roommate, with his brilliant plan hypnotize Naruki into becoming someone who can defend himself. Kou reluctantly agrees. But the result blows Kou s mind off because now every time Naruki is aroused, he develops a split personality seme-Naruki, who will take any chance to top anyone, but most especially Kou!
In a special additional oneshot, model-student Satoru is called the homo-making machine of Seiran. He's willing to sleep with just about anyone. But in his heart, he only wants to be held by his friend Riku. Too bad Riku seems to consider him as just a friend. Or is there something more to Riku's mothering habits and concern? (An entertaining read!)
(The Future Lovers looks Bright)
("Future" perfect!) This is the first manga I ever read, and it's become one of my favourite books. Kento is a young teacher convinced he knows what he wants: wife, children and grandparents all living together in perfect family bliss. But after he has a drunken, one-night stand with Akira, then discovers that Akira is now teaching at his school, he's forced to re-examine his assumptions and decide what's truly important to him. Sounds hackneyed? In Saika Kunieda's hands, it's not. She tells her story with such charm and humour that the whole thing feels fresh. The situation between Kento and Akira has real emotion to it, but is handled lightly rather than being drenched in angst, and Kunieda does a good job of letting people's actions demonstrate their characters and feelings rather than spelling every single thing out in the dialogue. I love her artwork, too. In some respects it's more "cartoony" than others', but her drawings are really accomplished and I like it that her people aren't clones of the typical bishonen look; Kento, for example, is the most realistic-looking man in manga I've yet seen.
So read this for the touching romance between the conservative but kindhearted Kento and the flaky and insecure Akira, plus great artwork and a very funny concluding message from the author.
Future Lovers Volume 1 (Yaoi) (Deux) I enjoyed vol. 1 and 2 of this set. The story though silly every once in awhile contained enough angst to keep anyone interested. The uncertainty of the relationship between the two characters is the best part. It's beautiful when each realizes he loves the other and it doesn't seem to happen at the same time. The story centres around two teachers: the easy-going, uninhibited Akira and the more serious Kento. Their relationship starts with a one night stand, after which they coincidentally find themselves thrown together again when they end up teaching at the same high school. The plot basically focuses on the relationship that forms between them.
This is a really light-hearted, entertaining read. Even though not a lot happens in terms of plot, the story is very well handled and is entertaining throughout. There isn't really anything completely explicit but there are plenty of hot scenes.
I really love Saika Kunieda's work. Her artwork is a little bit unusual but it's still very pretty (don't be put off by the covers!). Her characters and plots lines are also always well developed and absorbing. If you haven't come across her work before I definitely recommend it!
Overall, something about 'Future Lovers' just really works. Along with volume 2, this is just a really heart-warming read. I can't recommend it enough! This one I read before it had been translated into English and I must say it is one of the best manga out there for all the girls-and boys who love a sweet and very real story about a couple whose not so very perfect and yet cant help but love each other through the fights, the making up, the lies, the jealousies and insecurities both share.
Meet Kento who lives with his grandparents who have raised him since he was a child, family is important to them and they want him to marry a good woman, Kento thinks he's found the right woman who can be the perfect wife and mother he needs. Meet Akira a drop dead gorgeous young man a flirt with a smirk like a fox, a flair for flamboyant clothing and a habit of just being annoying meet under unfortunate circumstances. After Kento clumsily proposes to his girlfriend with no words of love or deep meaning he's doused with a drink and meets Akira who happened to be sitting by him and gets a little wet himself, together they begin to drink and try to drown out Kento's sorrows only for the night to end differently than how Kento had expected. Under the mercy of Akira, Kento learns something about himself as they throw themselves into kisses and sex.
Of course not everything ends with an ever after for this very different couple. A one night stand leads to something more as Kento's workplace suddenly adds a new art teacher who just happens to be the first guy he ever had sex with -Akira! Thinking it an isolated event they both decide to ignore that anything ever went on between them that is until a little more alcohol is involved and Akira gets just a little sentimental. Troubles continue to follow the couple as they try to make it end and then try to make it work. In the end Kento must face what he wants for himself and not what everyone else wants for him but is it too late in the end for him and Akira?
Deux I believe is one of the best publishers out there selling yaoi manga I hope they continue to gather more because much of their collection features the best and hopefully they will continue to grace readers with what yaoi readers want most which is good art and good storytelling with the best translations attached to the best price. I think all yaoi fans will fall in love with Future Lovers and I recommend it to both new and old fans who want a simple love story between two men who don't deal so much with forces out of their elements but with problems real couples face readers will also be introduced to Saika Kunieda whose art is amazing both lush and sensual it continues to move across the pages because there is no need for so many graphics lines or buildings to incorporate into her story that makes readers appreciate it even more.
Future Lover's is a keeper and I will continue to wait for it's "Future" sequel.

I can hardly add to or improve on the above rave reviews, so just let me further hammer the idea into the heads of potential purchasers: GET THIS BOOK! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!! While I groove on angsty, gory, full-frontal-action-on-every-page stories, the natural, realistic (within the parameters of yaoi, of course) development of characters and relationship here makes for one sweetly satisfying read. All told, another winner from Deux Press! A romantic lover await you... in the future.
Kento Kumagaya wishes for the simple things in life: to have a happy family with the ideal housewife, loving kids, and kind grandparents all living together, happily ever after. Fate, however, has other plans. Enter Akira Kazuki, a smart, beautiful and unrestrained gay man who shatters Kento's dream with a single night of wild and passionate homosexual sex. This is a romantic, sweet and funny story between two different people (in more ways than one) who unexpectedly find the same future together. Rerations < Future Lovers Volume 1 (Yaoi) (Deux) >
