At first I was a little skeptical about the whole having so many different stories in one book. Especially since a few aren't that long. But all of them were amazing and had that small additive that tied them perfectly together. My favorite was the last story. It was so good that it had me in tears. It also was the one to answer the question what else do these stories have in common aside from the hybrid children. THough word of advice once you reach that part of the story make sure you're not outside or anywhere else you don't want people to see you crying. Cuz I was walking around a book store reading this and about almost broke into tears. I making some really funny faces though. Anywayz great definitely worth the buy... This is both one of the best and one of the most depressing manga's I've read. In fact on of the stories was so sad I had to call my sister crying. Something I have not done is a long time. However, for all that it made me cry it made me feel, and I do not regret reading it. Mind you not all the stories were that sad. The book is mostly of one shots that are connected to one another. While the others made me sad, they also managed to put a smile on my face. Only one the stories made my heart hurt with a untreated wound well after I finished the story, and I can say that after you have read this manga you will know the one I am right now writing about. If you want fluff as most manga of this genre tend to have this is not the one you are looking for. However, if you love finding yourself in a emotional rollercoaster, both good and bad this is the piece you are looking for. One of the absolute best yaoi manga in existence. It is definitely emotional as it spans three different couples that are all intertwined in a very interesting way. I'm not going to spoil but from the first chapter on this manga tells an excellent tale that at points will bring tears to your eyes. I know I cried when I read it. Although the stories are generally short, they are sweet, sexy and fun. At one point I was laughing out loud as the hilarious conversations, they are perfect and witty! Also, the art was well done, and story lines not overly dramatic or unnecessarily angsty, each are different, so you get a range from simple fun to poignant loss each telling a tale of a hybrid child, a being created to change and grow according to their owner's needs and wishes. This is a great "introduction" for readers just beginning to enjoy yaoi. In fact, I have bought and given copies as gifts to friends though I always keep a copy for myself. Very enjoyable yaoi manga! I really liked Hybrid Child. The stories were imagainitive and the art was beautiful. This manga is sweet and sad and humorous and just as good the second time around. I was afraid when I bought this manga that I would end up with yet another man gets boy, takes boy, boy is submissive and learns to love type of story, but I was wrong. The author managed to give the "Hybrid Chld" in each story a strong, distinct personality and a caring nature that was returned by the human counterpart. And the last story was heartbreaking, I cried at the end. And I rarely cry. No hardcore sex...but it wasn't needed. The Hybrid Child is an amazing android that can grow if it is lavished with enough love and care from its owner. Neither fully machine nor fully human, the various Hybrid Child models develop strong emotional bonds with their owners. This volume contains several short stories of love, sacrifice and drama: Young Kotaro learns the importance of responsibility when his Hybrid Child's lifespan runs out. The tragic swordsman Seya learns to love again with the help of his Hybrid child, Yuzu. The final tale tells the story of Kuroda, the creator of the Hybrid Child designs, and how his lost love inspired their creation. (Soccerfield Is GREAT) (So Disappointing, It Made Me Write My First Review) The story of Mark and Taylor will always emboss in the bottom of my heart!! The first book I read from Roeder was "Someone is Watching" instead of Ethan and Nathan I was more addicted to Mark and Taylor by the time I was reading it, but now the passion is growing even bigger! The more I read, "The soccer flied is empty" the more I love Mark and Taylor. First, loving someone is really hard, and being love with the person you dream about is even harder, reading about Mark and Taylor give me hopes that there is really true love in this world. The way they acted between themselves, the way the look upon others... is just more than everything in the world. It felt so real when I read it!! Roeder able to create an environment that is believable, which makes you think you are a part of the story!! Although they ended in way I never wanted to, but it still can't stop you from liking reading!! The only problem I had with the book is the cover, most of the reader would just buy the cover because of the cover, I have noticed this book for while, however the cover just turned me off!! Until I read, "Someone is Watching", I realized it was about Mark and Taylor, which it is a must I have to buy a bad cover!!!! BUT the story is great... any This is a great casual read. Roeder does a very good job of conveying the conflicting feelings that all teens have in their relationships. He also does a great job of building up enough sympathy for the main characters that you definately feel moved at the end of this Romeo and Juliet tribute. I don't mind giving away the end because Roeder's references to Romeo and Juliet begin in the very first sentence. This isn't high literature but it is very effective and you will cry in the end. This is my second Mark Roeder novel. I too read "A Better Place" prior to reading "The Soccer Field...". I enjoyed both pieces, however, I found "The Soccer Field..." somewhat redundant. The author tells us every other page how much these two guys love each other (we get it already). Even though the writing is relatively mediocre I must say I love Roeder's work. I have purchased every title in "The Gay Chronicles" and look forward to reading them as well. As an adult, I identify with so many of the situations presented in his books. They are real and true, I can also say as a teacher I see many of these situations occur on school campuses everyday. The books are great reading for straight readers as well, especially adoloscents, who would benefit greatly from reading these stories. Keep up the good work Mark. I highly recommend everyone who is sensitive to the issues presented here, pick up a copy and see some real life situations that so many kids in our schools today are going through. What Mr. Roeder depicts is not far from the truth! I was told om Mark's books, and I didn't start with The Soccerfield Is Empty. But when I read it, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Both characters Mark and Taylor are well writen, Mark A Roeder does a excellent job with both characters. I highly recommend his books to straight boys/Men, I am straight and I like his books I read so far. Start with The Soccerfield Is Empty, and read his books in chronological order. I'm usually the last person to want to disparage someone's art, and it's clear that Mr. Roeder has a great deal of affection for his characters. Perhaps a bit too much. This isn't a bad book, per se, but it certainly isn't very good. The death trap for any writer is when s/he gets into the habit of telling and not showing. That's a pitfall Mr. Roeder has not yet learned to avoid. Brevity can be your friend as well. I just don't know how the story can both move along too slowly, but also too quickly, but there we are. I must also confess that I find the novel's denouement to be at least a teensy bit irresponsible, especially for a work that seems to be directed toward gay youth. Mark is a boy who wants what we all want: to love and be loved. His dreams are realized when he meets Taylor, the boy of his dreams. The boys struggle to keep their love hidden from a world that cannot understand, but ultimately, no secret is safe in a small Mid-western town. The Soccer Field Is Empty is a story of love, friendship, understanding, and an age-old prejudice that still has the power to kill. It is a story for young and old, gay and straight. It reminds us all that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect and that there is nothing greater than the power of love.
