He was able to build it himself with hardly any help from me (which to me makes it somewhat educational because the builder has to follow the instructions). The design is realy good because not only does it look really good (and it's quite large compared to the Bionicles you get in those little tubs) it stands up REALLY easily (the limbs and especially the legs move in sorts of differnt ways and hte feet are very large) which makes it much easier to play with.

They are wonderfully sized for little people to learn how to stack, especially on the wide sides. Now that he's a little older we build cities and his cars, dolls, or animals travel round, knock over towers, or construct new "caves". It's so much more imaginative and playful than pre-molded, gaudy plastic! Since I bought them in June, these are the first things he looks for to play with. He dumps them all out of the storage container (included with the blocks) and begins building. At first he needed a little help learning how all the pieces connected (10 min) after that...he would spend hours in his room building all of the different objects (record player, egg beater, car window, ect.) Within the first week I think he had spent over 20 hours in his room working on it. It has now been 2 months and he continues to spend hours building different things with it. Each one takes him 1-2 hours and it is so cool to seem them work. He is so proud and it is a good self esteem builder. He loves it...with his allowance he has bought more k'nex. I don't think any of the pieces have broke and they seem very strong. I am very happy that I decided to buy this toy.』

He will play with this toy without distraction, and can play with it by himself or with an adult. The only problem with it is the packaging. Because the rods have positive and negative ends, the slots in the styrofoam which only allow side-by-side stacking makes cleanup a pain, because the ends have to be aligned correctly to allow all the pieces to stay in place without repulsing each other. Also, the shallow sections make it easy to lose the magnetic ball bearings. Some sort of divided tub would work much better.』

(Slightly disappointed) 『I honestly thought this would be the next craze for my son. He was asking so much for a crane, and this fit him perfectly. He was really excited when he got it, and really enjoyed putting it together with his Uncle....but once his Uncle left, the toys remained in the box. It's been two months, and he hasn't touched them. I find the pieces scattered through the house , he likes to use them as throwing pieces. I think the main problem with these is the fact that the silver "connector" pieces are not that stable. They do not stay in the circles very well. If you put too much pressure on them, they will fall out. And for a little boy, that can be very frustrating!』

(Swing and a miss...) 『I'm a huge fan of most things Fisher Price, but I have to say that this thing is one of the most irritating toys I've ever bought for my son.
It's remarkably flimsy in some ways (the angled connections that make up the base are simply not up to the task of keeping the base together) and overly strong in others (the tolerances of the bricks that make up the tower are so tight that no 6 year old could snap them together - it took all 180 pounds of my weight on top of them to snap some together).
At first I assumed that the toy would be simple for him (a very nimble 6 year old who makes his way through Lego sets designed for ages 11 and up with no problems), but after watching him struggle with it for a bit, I joined in to help, and found that my Big 10 education, combined with a DIY ethos were barely enough to get this thing together. Maybe our set was just a bad manufacturing run, but in looking at the connections and pieces here, I have a pretty low opinion of the engineering of this thing...
Once I managed to finally get the thing together, we were faced with the final insult in trying to crank up the crane... it's built for a lefty - just take a look at the picture. If you're a lefty, then this is a plus for you, but my son and I are both righties, so...

She was so excited about building different creatures and the colors and durablility are a plus. However, after a 1/2 hour she was in tears from frustration! First, it's not a toy that a child can build alone. I don't mind doing things with her of course, but when she is independently playing this is not the toy to drag out. I had to connect all of the legs and eyes myself which was difficult for me (mom). I stated a couple of times "I can't believe the box states it's for ages 3 - 5." The cube pieces connected a lot easier. After we built two creatures, my daughter wanted to play with them. Move them around and such. They fell apart on numerous occassions in which I had to reconnect them. She finally broke down in tears from the frustration of them falling apart all the time and not being able to reconnect them herself.
Disappointing.』
(Not for young kids) 『Trio is definitely not for young kids. I bought this set and another one for my 3 (almost 4) year old grandson. He was having trouble putting it together and lost interest quickly. I also had problems with it - maybe because it was a new set, but every time I put in one part another one fell out. The box said for 3-5 year olds, but his mom and I felt like it was for 5+.』
(This is a wonderful building toy and my 4 yr old loves it) 『We bought one of these creature kits when we were going on vacation (to help entertain him on the long plane ride) and it turned out to be one of the best sets we have found so far. Others (like plain blocks, farm, log sets etc) were too limited in what he could create so he was bored with them in just a few days. This one holds his attention for a long time and he builds so many crazy things. We've had it for 3 months now and he is still playing with it every day. I also love that there are NO batteries required and that it is all imagination play. He has no trouble putting the pieces together and then surprising me with what he has built. I would recommend this for any child over the age of 3 who has shown an interest in building things and does not put pieces in their mouths. The pieces are not too small but some kids put everything in their mouth. Fortunately, mine never has done that. I have purchased more of this product in different sets for christmas. I know he will be thrilled with more of them so he can build even more. I find that I love it myself and I enjoy playing with it just as much as he does. That is something coming from one who never played much when I was a child. :)』

The blocks snap together and come apart very easily. My 4-year-old sometimes needs help attaching legs, eyes and arms, but he can usually get them in far enough that they stay. I'm hoping those connections get looser with use over time. The finished structures stand up to being played with and knocked around.
