(Disappointing and superficial)
(An essential guide for those working with the GLBT population)
(A book for everyone)
(Therapists need this book!) Much of the time reading books from professional book publishers are like running through mud--lots of hard work and very tiring. Transgender Emergence is packed with excellent information that is written in an accessible style. I've learned a great deal and feel comfortable recommending the book to clients who are struggling with gender issues, including transgender and intersex. I don't know what's more depressing - finally reading this book or reading all the full-starred reviews where everyone conflates sexual orientation with sexual identity.
This book is a basic introduction to the concept of trans identities. It has some clinical models, some heartfelt anecdotes and a lot of misinformation that perpetuates stereotypes and therefore violence. Like the ridiculous concept that all transmen were once butch lesbians. The author has taken one person's experience and extrapolated that to be all-encompassing. It limits horrifically what it means to have a trans identity and I can only hope that others will publish different experiences so that we are closer to seeing a more complex picture.
That said, it's better than what else is out there for care providers. If this excites people to know that transfolk exist and we don't as a general rule go about raping women and murdering babies, then that's a step in the right direction. Why we teach people to think different means dangerous and create a need for books that are way too basic is a bigger question and not one this book addresses.
It's ENDA again. And what happened prior to 1973 when homosexuality was still in the DSM as a pathology. It's a long slow road to make it into the common vernacular and to get through the checkout line without a snicker or an unwelcome comment or worse from an unaffected party. If you need hand-holding, this is your book. If you're ready for more comprehensive thought, read Whipping Girl by Julia Serano. It's got more meat without the pretty diagrams. Lev's "Transgender Emergence" provides the most comprehensive outline and review of empirical literature pertaining to the assessment, treatment, and understanding of transgendered individuals to date. Any mental health professional working with the GLBT population MUST add this to their collection, as well as, provide Lev's work as psychoeducational therapy to patients and their significant others. Additionally, psychologists working in forensic populations or with issues of sexuality should review this book for an overview of the etiology, epidemiology, theoretical understandings, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients presenting with gender identity disorders or dysphoria.
Lev's work is a masterpiece and should be required by MA, PsyD, and PhD programs in diversity training. It provides a non-judgemental, well-written, and well-researched voice to a population which has been largely ignored by current literature and funding. I found "Transgender Emergence" phenomenally useful in researching and developing a model of best care practices for male to female transsexual inmates. Bravo Arlene! This book is outstanding in every respect. The cover, however, I feel may unfortunately narrow its readership - "Therapeutic Guidelines for Working with Gender-Variant People and Their Families." I am a lay person who is fairly well read on the subject matter and I find that this book would valuable for anyone to read. It has the potential to help emancipate the transgendered population that is still stigmatized and oppressed by the medical profession and society including religion and politics. It certainly should be required reading for policy makers in the government, the legal profession, the justice system, human resource personnel, etc. The book is not only well researched and well written, it is easily understandable by anyone, meaning that no background in the field of psychiatry is required to be able to appreciate the material. The book is very up-to-date (2004). The Publisher would do well to advertise this book to a wider audience. Lev compiles a terrific anthology on working with transgender clients. Whether you are a health professional or mental health professional, Transgender Emergence offers the information and skills to be successful with transgender clients. This is a must-have if you work directly with this population. -Brad Baranowski Counseling Intern Explore an ecological strength-based framework for the treatment of gender-variant clients! This comprehensive book provides you with a clinical and theoretical overview of the issues facing transgendered/transsexual people and their families. Transgender Emergence: Therapeutic Guidelines for Working with Gender-Variant People and Their Families views assessment and treatment through a nonpathologizing lens that honors human diversity and acknowledges the role of oppression in the developmental process of gender identity formation. Specific sections of Transgender Emergence: Therapeutic Guidelines for Working with Gender-Variant People and Their Families address the needs of gender-variant people as well as transgendered children and youth. The issues facing gender-variant populations who have not been the focus of clinical care, such as intersexed people, female-to-male transgendered people, and those who identify as bigendered, are also addressed. The book examines: the six stages of transgender emergence coming out transgendered as a normative process of gender identity development thinking "outside the box" in the deconstruction of sex and gender the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as the convergence, overlap, and integration of these parts of the self the power of personal narrative in gender identity development etiology and typographies of transgenderism treatment models that emerge from various clinical perspectives alternative treatment modalities based on gender variance as a normative lifecycle developmental process Complete with fascinating case studies, a critique of diagnostic processes, treatment recommendations, and a helpful glossary of relevant terms, this book is an essential reference for anyone who works with gender-variant people. Handy tables and figures make the information easier to access and understand. If you have followed Love Mode until now, there is no way you could stop. Volume 9 is just as emotionally driven and so deeply moving, Yuki Shimizu doing a marvelous job builing her characters and the stirring and engrossing plot. I will not even try to rehatch the plot as it would not do the plot justice. This story arc is just so amazingly and emotionally written as I feel deeply for Kiichi, Haruomi and his twin brother. Definitely a love triangle there but we all know the good doctor has chosen well. And how better to end this story arc than on a sexy note. A marvelous Volume 9! The flashback continues...After Haruomi saves Kiichi from Miyamoto, he decides to look for his long-lost twin brother Tien--who unexpectedly shows up at the Aoe household to kidnap Kiichi! Will Tien finally forgive his brother for abandoning him? And with all that Haruomi and Kiichi have been through, will these two become more than just friends? (Fabulous Romance deservidly a Lammy winner)
(Great addition to the series)
(A Definite Must Read!)
(Best in this series) I read Distant Shores, Silent Thunder first not knowing that there is more. Now I have all but the last one to come out and I can't wait for it to get here. And all I can say is look out Mr. Mailman! I can't wait for it to get here!!!
If there were ever a series that created a yearning to visit a particular peninsula in Massachusetts if only to catch of glimpse of Sheriff Reese Conlon, her loving partner, Dr. Tory King, Rookie Officer Bri Parker, and now Dr. KT O'Bannon, and Pia Torres, PT, OT, CMT, then Radclyffe's "Distant Shores, Silent Thunder" will clinch it. After being immersed in the first two novels, "Safe Harbor," and "Beyond the Breakwater," and the fourth in the best-selling Provincetown series "Storms of Change," one can only hope that Radclyffe never tires of writing about these characters because readers will never tire of reading about them. It's not easy to keep a series fresh, but Radclyffe is proficient at bringing in new blood while keeping us abreast of old favorites, to satisfy and yet fuel the insatiable hunger for the ultimate escapism of getting lost in a book.
What endears Radclyffe to her followers goes beyond telling an exciting story in a great setting and tapping into all aspects of human nature. The award-winning author has her fans eating out of her skillful hands by giving them characters who are so real it's either impossible not to search every cruiser or bike for Reese and Bri or to hope if you ever need a doctor in an emergency that Tory or KT will come to the rescue. If you enjoy witnessing the mending of a broken heart and spirit, falling in love, or aspire to having forever with one special person, you will love "Distant Shores, Silent Thunder." Radclyffe eloquently puts into words what it feels like when a woman loves another woman with her body, heart, and soul, and it's riveting.
"Distant Shores, Silent Thunder" takes us on the tumultuous journey of a woman when her career and confidence are shaken for the first time and redeems her in every way possible. It is easy to forgive Tory's ex-lover, Dr. KT O'Bannon, her past transgressions because Radclyffe has us falling in love with her transformation. Fate has landed the surgeon a low blow but in the process has taught her what's important in life. KT meets a therapist who not only helps restore the use of her hand, but who restores faith in matters of the heart. KT and Pia are perfect together and as far as love interests go, it's a match made in heaven, but can heaven really be found on Earth?
Whether the scene is between Reese and Tory, Bri and Allie, or KT and Pia, Radclyffe keeps the pace fluid while doing each couple justice. It's wonderful to follow Reese and Tory's pre-marital bliss with baby Regina. Even when Reese's oft-dangerous job and other threats loom on the horizon, the couple's relationship remains solid. Bri shows great promise as an officer and Reese is very proud of her, while Reese is Bri's hero and mentor. Bri's character is put to the test in more ways than one. Is Bri strong enough to remain faithful to her lover studying art abroad in the face of stiff competition by a persistent, desirable fellow officer Allie? Then there is the pleasure of rooting for KT and Pia and hoping they will have their ever after. Further keeping the interest for continual sequels, new characters are always popping up as well, and Counselor Trey Pelosi shows great promise of future story lines.
Few authors write medical drama better than those who have lived it. Radclyffe's medical expertise enhances the clinical scenes dramatically but her writing is never condescending or over-the-top. There is that perfect balance so that everyone can enjoy and understand what's going on. She also writes police procedurals with the same flourish. It is no surprise that "Distant Shores, Silent Thunder" was awarded a 2005 Lammy and was a Goldy finalist in the Romance category. "Storms of Change" continues the saga and is touted as being Radclyffe's best work to date. This reviewer thinks that every work is her best, only it just keeps getting better.
Romance is a leading seller in fiction and Radclyffe has yearning, love, sex, and satisfaction down to an art. Distant Shores, Silent Thunder earns five plus stars and is one of those books you can read more than once and enjoy it more each time.
This was a great read. I enjoyed the evolution of the relationships. The core characters become more interesting without betraying their essential elements. This is a fantastic series to read and reread. I can't wait for the 4th to arrive. Dr. KT O'Bannon, is a woman at the top of her game. Her life as a surgeon is a dream come true. Often times confident and sometimes brash, she's living life large and in charge. Then the unthinkable happens and KT is suddenly faced with the possiblity of losing the only way of life she knows.
Dr. Victory "Tory" King, and her partner, Sheriff Reese Conlon, along with Officer Briana "Bri" Parker whose stories began in Safe Harbor then were continued in Beyond The Breakwater once again find themselves smack in the middle of a case fraught with intrigue, danger and suspense. As the three women work to unravel clues, someone one of them never expected to see again suddenly surfaces - in a most unexpected way.
KT, who is reeling from the impact of her situation and desperate to practice medicine of any kind, responds to an ad placed by a doctor needing an assistant. A doctor with whom KT shares a history - namely one Victoria King - a woman KT once loved and left in pursuit of a career. Despite reservations that Victoria's not sure she can put a name to she hires KT to work in her clinic.
Into the fray comes temptation from an unlikely source for Briana. Temptation that could affect her position in the Sheriff's department. Will she allow herself to succumb or will her feelings for Caroline, who was her first, be strong enough to help her resist? When Bri is injured during the course of the case, a major question arises - whom will she turn to for comfort?
Then there is the matter of KT unexpectedly finding herself more than a little attracted to Pia Torres, a physical therapist who works with severely injured patients. Although it seems Pia has been fighting feelings for KT almost from their first meeting, she is still leery of becoming involved with the surgeon. Will Pia allow herself to act on her feelings and take a chance on getting burned? As for KT, what choice will she make if she is able to return to the life she once knew? Will she choose Pia or will she choose career over love once more time?
Radclyffe has written a truly masterful tale of how someone - who is faced with overcoming their greatest challenge - sometimes has life throw them the absolutely perfect pitch. Distant Shores, Silent Thunder joins the long list of this author's works, which include such terrific reads as the "Honor" and "Justice" series as well as stand alone books - Passion's Bright Fury, Fated Love, Love's Tender Warriors, Tomorrow's Promise, Innocent Hearts and Love's Melody Lost. Each book is a perfect example where Radclyffe's skill of weaving a tale of intrigue with romance and drama is very much on display.
All the books in the Provincetown series are entertaining. But I found the the first two to be very average Radclyffe fare which relied too much on her usual formula and stock characters. Distant Shores, Silent Thunder is much better in every way. The book continues the story of Doctor Tory King and her partner, the butch and brave Sheriff Reese Conlon, who is sometimes too noble to be true. But why shouldn't we have such heroes in our own fiction? In this compelling book, the author writes about a group women who are very well rounded characters that are easy to identify with and have believable lives. The plot is complex enough that a lesser author would probably have messed up. But not Radclyffe. She pulls it all together and takes the reader to a happy and satisfying conclusion. I don't like books whose authors try to hide shallow characters and poor plots with emotive cliche. Radclyffe is a very good romance author and doesn't need to do this. But for a long time I've found her writing a bit too overheated and sentimental. This has changed in Distant Shores, Silent Thunder and it seems like she has struck a perfect balance between the emotional content and a feeling of authenticity. You don't have to read the whole series to enjoy this fine book as a stand alone novel. I highly recommend it.
No matter how much we plan, lifeand peoplehave a way of surprising us.
For Doctor KT O'Bannon, a near-fatal tragedy derails a career and disrupts everything she thought she knew about herself and her future. Battered and nearly broken, she turns for solace to the one woman who knows her best, her ex-lover Doctor Tory King. Their unexpected reunion in Provincetown uncovers old wounds, forges new bonds, and awakens long-buried passions. While Tory's lover Sheriff Reese Conlon struggles to uncover a deadly drug ring and Officer Bri Parker navigates the torturous path between friendship and desire, Tory and KTand those who love themare forced to examine the boundaries of love, friendship, and the ties that transcend time. (Disappointed)
(Bite) This is my first read for gay erotica, and I have to say I made a great choice. I loved it so much I read more of Mr.Michael's Work, And I hope that he plans to finish this story. A great ready for anyone who wants an Alpha male showing him who's boss. got this at pride, loved it! finished it before the fest was over, truly a good naughty book The story was really good . I strated reading and could,nt put it down . The way they met and then fell in love and the fight to stay togather . I would say you would love it like i did . Can,t wait the next one. With the description and reviews already posted, it's become obvious that I was expecting a little more from my first Sean Michael book. I was incredibly disappointed.
The characters are very one-dimensional. They have no background, few deep thoughts, and next to no evident personality. I couldn't bring myself to invest emotionally in them, because I was given so little to know them by. They have no history or family aside from one sentence about no-name friends as a bar and another sentence about never-named siblings across the country. The only feature I can remember about Anton, one of the main characters, is that he growls constantly--and I only finished the book two hours ago!
There was a plot--kind of. In between lots of sex, little blipits are thrown out. Very brief, with no explanation and little detail. The main villain left me with a big question mark. It's understood that's he's trying to kill everyone, and there's a little bit of why too. But overall he seemed thrown in, an extra thought with little detail. (Because the last page explicitly mentions a sequel, I'm going to assume there's more of an explanation. But as the main conflict of an entire novel, I expect more than "Look for the sequel!") It's the same with the villain's crony on the inside. Very see through, obvious, and not in the least suspenseful.
I'm not saying this was a terrible novel, because it's not. It simply wasn't what I was looking for or anticipating. If you want non-stop, amazing, graphic sex then look no farther. As an author, Michael has done a great job getting those scenes on paper. The images are mind blowing. But don't expect much of anything else.
Honestly, this seems more like a very rough draft than something in-print. A great rough draft, but a draft none-the-less.
Rich, grumpy Anton has not been able to keep a chef, until Greg shows up. He's surprised at Greg's appearance--tattoos, bleached hair, goatee--and his skill in the kitchen. He quickly finds himself attracted to Greg, but will Greg want him when he discovers Anton's secret?
Greg comes to Anton's home expecting only to work, not end up sleeping with the boss. Still, he can't seem to get enough of Anton. Then strange things start happening, and he begins to wonder if there's someone out there that doesn't want him to be with Anton...
In typical Sean Michael fashion, Bite is an incredibly hot book. Anton is brooding, dominating, possessive, and unhappy about his werewolf status. Sometimes stubborn and other times submissive, Greg is a good match for him. Their relationship progressed quickly, but somehow the speed was believable. The sex scenes are very, very hot. There was an interesting suspense angle as well, with the person who was stalking Greg. Overall, Bite is a really good read. I do have to add a couple of disclaimers to this review, however. If you don't like violence, steer clear. Secondly, don't expect this one to be tied up with a bow at the end. I'll certainly be reading the sequel when it comes out later this year!
Cassie reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed Anton loves a well-prepared steak. That's all he's hoping for when he meets Greg, his new live-in chef. Flamboyant and confident, Greg attracts Anton immediately, and he finds himself wanting to know Greg better. Much better. It's not just a normal attraction for Anton. He's an unusual man, with unusual desires, and Greg seems to be filling a place in Anton's life that he's never explored. Anton prefers to be a civilized man and not let his werewolf self run free, but its the wolf that wants to claim Greg for a mate. Someone disapproves of Anton's relationship with Greg. Someone close to Anton, someone inside his carefully controlled household. As he and Greg come closer and closer to mating for life, the danger gets nearer, forcing them to depend on each other to stay safe, and for Greg to stay sane. Can Anton convince Greg that his wolf would never hurt him and keep Greg safe from the menace outside their relationship, too? Sexy, razor sharp and fast-paced, Bite will keep your heart racing! (Always- A Joyfully Recommended Title)
(Always by M. L. Rhodes)
(Always by M.L. Rhodes)
(Intensely emotional, compelling, sexually charged. Love this one from Rhodes.) I really enjoyed this book, especially the first half. That part was pure fun reading. The second part was wonderful in the beginning, but it seemed to go off the believability track and merge into erotic fantasy, but there's nothing wrong with that. It just wasn't reality any longer, but after all this is fiction, and it's supposed to go a little wild. I finished it very quickly because the author did make you care about both men. You could tell she loved them as well. They were two very complete characters in their descriptions and personality. I felt as if I knew them. I will definitely be picking up another book from this author. Will McLaren has secretly loved his outgoing, daring, popular best friend Ethan Gallagher for years. Shy, studious Will believes he'll ruin their friendship if he says anything, though, so he keeps his secret. On the night of his sister's wedding, the secret slips out. Then, after only one incredible night together, Ethan leaves and doesn't come back.
Ethan and Will both had secrets, but Ethan's were serious enough to keep him away for three years. After a terrible ordeal, he's finally free to return to the man he's always loved--but Will feels angry and betrayed at his long absence. Will Ethan be able to show his best friend how much he loves him, or will their secrets be too much to overcome?
Simply put, Never Let Go is an incredible book. M.L. Rhodes's deep characterization made it easy to care about both Will and Ethan, and I was very moved by their deep love for each other. They face serious obstacles in the story, but I never stopped rooting for them. Each step in the story brought me closer to the characters. I laughed, cried, and rejoiced right along with them as the book unfolded. One of the best things about the story was the way Will and Ethan grew and changed. Ethan begins the story self-assured and outgoing, but after his ordeal emerges much different. Will starts out shy and biddable. Near the end, they had somewhat of a role-reversal, and yet they were still essentially the same men they had been before--just with more facets. This is my first book by Ms. Rhodes, but it certainly won't be my last! Never Let Go is a sweet, hot, vastly enjoyable story of finding love, losing it, and finding it again. I definitely recommend this book. It will leave you believing in second chances.
Cassie reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed M. L. Rhodes, is an excellent author of male gay romance novels. I have to admit there are very few writers that I admire as much as I do M. L. Rhodes. Always, is a wonderful love story that pulls at the heart strings. The only bad part was the hostage situation. Other wise, the book is an excellent read, and it makes you laugh and cry. The two main characters, both male, struggle to come to terms with their relationship. The book is actually in two parts. The first part is strickly five stars, but I can only give four stars to the second part. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good gay romance. warning there is some man on man sex, and there is a bit of s/m. Never Let Go by M.L. Rhodes Will and Ethan are highschool mate friends. For all the years of the school they were inseparable, then Ethan went far away for college but they remained best friends and sometimes Ethan turned back home to see Will. And for Will was pain and pleasure cause Will was deeply in love with his friend and had no courage to admit it, especially not to Ethan who seemed to have plenty of women around him.
But one night, maybe thanks to some much drinks, Will and Ethan confess thier mutual feelings, and make passionate love. Will also declares his love to Ethan. But the morning after, Ethan has to leave in a hurry, and can't explain to Will why and where and doesn't know when he will be back. He only asks to Will to never let go him and his love for him.
But Ethan can return only three years after, without any words in between, and Will has not maintain his promise, he has let go and he has moved on, try to find someone else... but this is not true, cause his love for Ethan is not dead and flares to new life when his lover is again near him. But Ethan is not the same man he was when he has left, and Will has to change to deal with this new man.
The plot is simple and somewhat cosy: the external world is only hint and never really break into this novel. Will and Ethan are first friends and then lovers, and this allow them to be able to trust themself without much words to explain the past. If not for the friendship between then, it will really impossible to believe true Will's behaviour, when hungry will turn suddenly in hunger for his lover's soul and body.
Hearts&Bones by M.L. Rhodes From best friend to lover the passage is not always easy, but Will and Ethan, the same couple of Never Let Go seem to have chosen the right path.
Ethan, ex secret agent and very commanding man, turns in a man to be nurse by Will. He is not weak, but he needs his man to be strong and protective, to shut out all the bad memories haunting him. And he needs also to accomadate himself to a live made of 9.00 to 5.00 work and domestic peace.
Will is tender and patient, he lets Ethan adjust himself to the new life, and he looks at him like a dream come true: the love of all his life is in the end near him, and it seems not true... And in fact the past is not so willing to be forgotten.
A good sequel to Never Let Go, actually the real story: Never Let Go introduces to us Will and Ethan, but only in Hearts&Bones you can see how their relationship evolves. In Hearts&Bones Ethan is the main character and we have the chance to understand him better: Will is the reason of all his life and his salvation. The story is a good mix of romance and thriller, with some unexpected twists. The plot is well planned and as realistic as can be a romantic novel. Rhodes has given us two appealing and memorable characters in Ethan and Will, their story told in 2 novellas which were released a few months apart. Very pleased that AmberQuill has combined the 2 e-books in print, as this one is for keeps.
Ethan's and Will's story is compellingly written, emotionally stirring and stunning in its intensity and passion, their sex ranging from lovingly tender to sizzingly hot BDSM.
"Never let go", the first novella, is beautifully written. Ethan and Will are best friends since high school, secretly in love with each other yet never dare to declare it as afraid the other would be repelled by it. Since embarking on their own career, they hardly meet up as Ethan's supposely high flying career takes him around the world. Only nothing is as it seems. They finally consummate their love 16 years later, and just as Will thinks all is well, Ethan vanishes from his life only this time it seems for good. Three years later, Ethan appears at Will's door step, a "broken" man. Thereon, their reunion is one emotional ride, bittersweet and deeply touching.
I thought it will be hard to measure up to the first novella but Rhodes proves me wrong. "Hearts and Bones" is just as compellingly written and powerfully emotional as their brief domestic bliss is disrupted by Jackson, a psychotic sadist from Ethan's past. The lovers are held captive and their torment in the hands of this sadist who is into heavy BDSM have me at the edge. These parts are not easy to read as Jackson threatens each man with the life of the other. Rhodes has done a marvelous job here exploring the depth of each man's feelings for the other. Ethan's mind torture is heart wrenching as his horrible past is used against him. BDSM is heavy here, the sex sizzling erotic. The intense moment when the lovers manage to turn the table on their tormentor have me holding my breath. There is a bit of comic relief towards the end when one unlikely hero comes to their rescue. The only flaw in this novella is Rhodes seems to make light of the injuries each man sustains during his captivity. A flaw easy to overlook as the lovers' gripping story have me spellbound until the end.
I love both characters. Ethan seems a man of the world, strong and confident. But he is one vulnerable and haunted man, his discovery of a side of himself startling. Will is equally appealing with his solid quiet strength, the pillar in their relationship, and he is of course not quite the gentleman "geek" he appears. Strongly recommended to all M/M romance fan out there. From award-winning and best-selling gay-fiction author M.L. Rhodes...Now in paperback,Alwayscombines the first two highly acclaimed volumes in the emotional and explosively erotic man-love story of Will McLaren and Ethan Gallagher.Never Let Go... But after just one night together, Ethan's secret life interferes and the two are torn apart for three long years. (A story that needs to be told)
(A MUST READ)
(Good!!!)
(Horrifying and Wonderful At the Same Time) "historical fiction" (what on earth does that mean?)
At the end, she lacks much knowledge of Mexican history to get this together.
I'm sure she's really smart. But she was bound to fail here; too political and too many stereotypes) The sad fact is that the stories that should receive the most coverage in the news often go practically ignored. Since 1993 an atrocity has been going on at the US-Mexican border that has left hundreds of women raped, mutilated and dead while very little has been done to solve the crimes and stop whoever is behind them. This is the setting that Gaspar De Alba has chosen for her Lambda Award winning novel as she tells the story of Ivon Villa, who is drawn into the situation when her sistr disappears in Mexico.
Desert Blood builds at a pace that leaves the reader feeling the growing terror Ivon experiences as she faces the idea that she may find her sister too late. There is so much to this plot that it almost becomes one of the book's weaknesses. There are three stories that run at once - the disappearances of Irene and the other women, Ivon's quest to adopt a child and her relationship with her family over her lesbianism. The stories of the women would have been enough to make a complete book and the other two strains sometimes distract from that. That could actually be a plus though because the one story is so horrific that the reader needs some release time away from it. One irritating aspect of the book is that De Alba includes a lot of comments in Spanish. Given the setting of the book, it's appropriate, but there are no translations for those readers who do not speak the language and the impression is left that parts of the story are being missed or not understood. A glossary of some time would have been helpful.
The compelling nature of this story makes it a book that should be read. Anyone looking for a romance with steamy sex scenes won't find that here, but they will find an issue that will move them to anger and an extremely well written novel.
You won't be able to put this one down, and once you're done reading it, you'll want to help the women of Juarez. A great read, but an even greater source of vital information. Too many people are still unaware of the massive murdering of innocent young women along the U.S.-Mexico border, and Desert Blood sheds light on this horrible situation. I encourage you to read it and to take action informing others of the femicides in Juarez as well! Now this one was full of so many turns and kept pulling you in deeper, good read. This book made the hair on my neck stand straight up! But I couldn't stop reading. The fact that it is fiction centered around real events made it even more horrifying and compelling. But even if the Juarez murders had not and were not taking place, this is still an incredible book. It's well written, the story riveting, and the characters (very important to me) are drawn with great reality. The protagonist, Ivon Villa, is a strong but flawed gay woman, fiercely loyal to her family in spite of her mother's hatefulness, and her iron will and determination make her a perfect vehicle for the non-fictional message of this book. BRAVO ALICIA! It's the summer of 1998 and for five years, over a hundred mangled and desecrated bodies have been found dumped in the Chihuahua desert outside of Juárez, México, just across the river from El Paso, Texas. The perpetrators of the ever-rising number of violent deaths target poor young women, terrifying inhabitants on both sides of the border.El Paso native Ivon Villa has returned to her hometown to adopt the baby of Cecilia, a pregnantmaquiladoraworker in Juárez. When Cecilia turns up strangled and disemboweled in the desert, Ivon is thrown into the churning chaos of abuse and murder. Even as the rapes and killings of "girls from the south" continue--their tragic stories written in desert blood--a conspiracy covers up the crimes that implicate everyone from the Maquiladora Association to the Border Patrol. When Ivon's younger sister gets kidnapped in Juárez, Ivon knows that it's up to her to find her sister, whatever it takes. Despite the sharp warnings she gets from family, friends, and nervous officials, Ivon's investigation moves her deeper and deeper into the labyrinth of silence.
