(superb gay read)

(Just as good as the first one!)

(As Good As BRETHREN; A Fabulous, Lush, Adventure)

(A Worthy Sequel)

(Unique, Moving, and Entertaining)
I have been a fan of historical novels since I read Gone with the Wind as a 14 year old. However, I always wished for gay novels written with a historical twist that were long reads. I will always pick a longer novel over a shorter one. And this one has wonderfully developed characters and a wonderful plot. I really have enjoyed watching the madness of Gaston be calmed and somehwat controlled by Will. I am ready for volume III.
This wonderful book continues the story of Will and Gaston... I just love them and I love this book! I highly recommend you read it!!!
I am lost for words that would describe just how much I love MATELOTS and the previous BRETHREN and indeed, I'm certain, the entire RAISED BY WOLVES series. I have read countless books and enjoyed many over many decades, but few truly stand out, and I certainly didn't expect a M/M romance series would affect me so greatly--but as those of you who have experienced these books know, they are unique.

The almost day-by-day accounting of life among the 17thC. buccaneers is magical in its depth and detail all on its own. These books are wonderfully long and expansive and as I said in my review of the first book, one can sink completely into another world and live fabulous adventures without danger or discomfort and yet see and feel everything. It's the ultimate experience for a reader of adventure tales, particularly if they enjoy experiences far from the mundane.

And for those of us who also enjoy character-driven tales, Will and Gaston's tale is fascinating. Will is someone who lives and loves passionately--and also thoughtfully. He's an observer of the human condition with his thoughts about wolves and sheep and centaurs. He seeks to understand the complexities of human nature, particularly when it comes to Gaston, who is not just damaged by his past, but has a kind of madness that was a part of him from birth. The ruminations on society and morality and other philosophies can sometimes seem anachronistically modern, but just as Hoffman's world is convincing and detailed, so are her characters, and Will's revolutionary thinking is organic and explained... and realistically portrayed, as he's no constant crusader for reform. Mostly, he just wishes to live honestly as a lover of men at a time when this was difficult--and this may seem modern too, but not really; people are not so different in their hopes and desires whether living centuries ago or currently. But really, do I care? No. Will can want to educate the slaves or not. I'll want to read about him all the same. And Gaston, too. These are characters to fall in love with no matter what your orientation. As with BRETHREN, the secondary characters are fantastic, too. Striker, Pete, Cudro, Otter, Liam, the Bard, Theodore--and introduced in this book, Agnes and Sarah.

In this installment, which opens right after the last book, Will first needs to help Gaston gain control over his madness, which has been gripping him since his torture/treatment at the hands of the crazy doctor. There are also changes coming to the buccaneers. New men arrive on Jamaica every day and many follow the lure of gold that piracy seems to promise, without caring for the traditions of the Brethren of the Coast. Amongst old friends who do hold to traditions, changes are happening, too. Will is instructed by his father to marry--and learns that Gaston desires him to have children some day. Striker lets it be known that he's also wished for children--and a wife, but fears Pete will kill someone rather than let that happen. Much of the first part of this book, the captain and crew of the Virgin Queen are sailing on their own, or in Port Royal, or off on other parts of the islands. There is action in the latter part when Henry Morgan gathers together the buccaneers for his famous action in Panama. But there is not a dull moment in the entire 600 pages of this book.

I am so grateful that the author has written this series. Sometimes books can be magic of the highest order--casting a spell that can transport a reader to other worlds to meet and adventure with people who can be known better than oneself. For me, Hoffman has cast such a magnificent spell that it can make life seem truly magical. I can't wait to read the next book (which fortunately for me, is available as I write this). I will need to wait for the right moment when I can put aside time to immerse myself again in this amazingly vivid world with these incredible characters and adventures. These are among the few books I wish would never end, so I know I will be re-reading them as soon as I can.

I was worried that this book wouldn't live up to my expectations from Brethren. I was sure that I would enjoy reading it, if for no other reason than it was more of Will and Gaston. I don't think it's possible to read Brethren without falling in love with these characters and wanting to read more. However, it seemed like most of the secrets had already been revealed in the first volume, which made me worry what could possibly be left to cover.

I need not have worried. The relationship between Will and Gaston progresses much further than I ever thought it would. The exploration of their love and it's limits (or lack thereof) is a very interesting topic for this book. Additionally, there is more sex in this book, and Will and Gaston find new ways of dealing with their issues. I still felt as though I was living in their world while reading the book, and found it extremely hard to put down.

I am anxiously awaiting book 3. If you have any doubt if you should buy this book, go buy it anyway, and go ahead and preorder book 3 for yourself. You're going to want it.

I remember falling in love with Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson as a kid and wishing for an adult version ever since. This series fulfills that nostalgic longing for a well-researched, emotionally complex, and sexually explicit m/m-centric pirate romp. The plot turns are immensely entertaining and the personalities equally engaging. I was riveted by the central love story as the author skillfully relates every nuance of their painful pasts and developing relationship. I especially enjoyed the battle scenes and the generous descriptions of the heroes' and fellow bucaneers' combat prowess. The political subtext of the bucaneers as freeman carving out a life independent of empire is inspiring too. I hope that you enjoy this series as much as I do.
Buccaneer adventure/romance. The second of a series chronicling the relationship between an emotionally wounded and disenchanted English lord and an insane and lonely French exile, set among the buccaneers of Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1667.

(Not Impressed)

(Its a history book...)

(mediocre book)
It seemed like a cool book when i was flipping through it, but upon reading it... it didn't seem so great (all the sexual postions seemed like the stuff I was doing in the seventh grade) so don't buy it with the expectations of turning into a human pretzel with your lover...
I glanced at this book, it seems like a history book. It does talk about some postitions, but i suppose anyone could have figured out the ones it talks about. In my opinion Ultimate Gay Sex is a better book. Not only does UGS talk about postions (and leaves out the history... yuck!) UGS talks about relationsips, positons, protection, and contracted deasises and their symptoms.... hope this helps!
I wasn't entirely impressed w/this book. I had expected more but much of it is common knowledge and for those w/an imagination.
The Kama Sutra, the famed ancient Indian guide to lovemaking, has been used to enhance sexual experiences since the fouth century. Now, it has been reinterpreted to created the ultimate sex guide for gay men. Using clear, empowering text to celebrate the art of gay lovemaking,The Gay Man's Kama Sutraapplies the art and spirit and intention of the original Kama Sutra--the expression of uninhibited pleasure through sex--to the lives of twenty-first century gay men. It shamelessly encourages love and sex, pleasure and sensuality, uninhibited erotic indulgence and play. Visually stunning, it is accompanied by exquisite, sensual artworks from the original Kama Sutra, classic homo-erotic artworks, and tasteful instructional line drawings.

Wheter you are in a long-term partnership, an open relationship, or are enjoying a life of sexual freedom, this book offers invaluable advice for a happy, healthy, and satisfying sex life. Evey aspect of gay sex is explored--from oral congress and masturbation to anal sex and fetishes--and important issues such as finding a partner, emotional problems, and safe sex are also included.

In the twilight shadows, nothing is what it seems, and not all the monsters have claws. Book Three in the Bay City Paranormal Investigations series. While leading an amateur ghost-hunting expedition in Asheville, NC, Bay City Paranormal is called to investigate Sunset Lodge, a rustic inn situated on a remote Smoky Mountain peak. In recent weeks, employees and guests alike have seen a weird, frightening creature in the forest near the lodge. A creature which sounds all too familiar to the BCPI team. Sam Raintree doesnt want to deal with another interdimensional gateway. The last one they faced nearly took the life of Sams employer and lover, Dr. Bo Broussard, and Sam cant stand the thought of it happening again. Especially now that he and Bo are finally together and working through their problems. But Sams psychokinetic abilities give him the power to permanently close the gateways, and he cant bring himself to ignore that. With the safety of the Sunset Lodge staff and guests at stake, Sam, Bo and their colleague, Dean Delapore, make the trip to the Lodge to determine if it indeed hosts a portal to another dimension. Once at Sunset Lodge, a missing man, a grisly discovery and a moment of carelessness converge to reveal secrets much differentand far uglierthan any the BCPI team expected. Secrets which not only put their lives in danger, but which might provide Sam with an escape from the portals. If hes willing to take it. Warning, this title contains the following: explicit m/m sex, graphic language, violence.

(CATHYS REVIEW)

(Wonderful reading!)

(Roughhousing by Laura Baumbach)

(Sequel to A Bit of Rough)

(Hot Enough to burn your screen....)
GREAT BOOK. MALE AND MALE LOVE AND LEARNING TO LOVE AND TRUST. HAD SUSPENSE. A GREAT LOVE STORY AND IT ENDING GOOD.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It did live up to my expectations as a sequel and will be re-read alot in future years. I'm buying EVERYTHING this author writes!!
Laura hit it again: here we have a well built novel. The story is the sequel of A Bit of Rough and we find our characters, Bram and Jamie, only some day after the end of the first novel.

Even if they have met together only some weeks ago, Bram wants a strong commitment than Jamie is unsecure: how is it possible that he succeded to find the true love! He is unworthy of a man so perfect like Bram and so he tries to run away.

But Bram understands very well his Jamie, and there is no way he allows him to leave. He obliges Jamie to "accept" their love: Jamie wants a rough hand in bed, but not in his life, but maybe, sometimes, it is necessary that Bram uses his strenght also outside the bedroom.

Really, if you are an independent woman, you can find Bram's behaviour a little overwhelmed... but he is so tender, and caring and he talks! A man who want to talk of his feelings! Unbelievable!

Roughhousing is the perfect sequel to another perfect book.

If you've been wondering how the lovers from A Bit of Rough have been getting on, this continuation is hot enough to make you glad you followed their story.

[..]
Present Day

Although they've been together for only a few weeks, Bram Lord knows deep in his heart that architect James Justin is The One - the partner Bram wants to spend the rest of his life with. From the top of his curly head to the tips of his toes, Bram thinks every inch of his Jamie is adorable and sexy. While submissive to Bram in the bedroom (not to mention the truck and various alleyways), James has his own career and is determined to make a success of it, which is another facet of his lover that Bram finds hugely arousing. Now, if only the brawny contractor can convince his shy lover of his worth.

Brutally disowned by most of his family when they found out he was gay, James has emotional wounds that still haven't healed and they leave him vulnerable, prone to doubt and determined to maintain some semblance of independence from his charismatic lover. Brushing aside Bram's thinly veiled hints to move in with him after he loses his apartment, James goes out and gets himself a new place. Meanwhile, when Bram boasts to James' boss about the work he's done on a project and it suddenly gets assigned to him, James quickly jumps to the conclusion that Bram is pulling strings to further his career. Confronting Bram at his office, James realizes just how successful his lover is and starts to wonder what Bram sees in him. Rather than watch Bram slowly realize his inadequacies, James pulls back. Will his self-destructive behavior and low esteem finally push Bram away?

ROUGHHOUSING continues right where A BIT OF ROUGH left off. Bram and James still have a lot of ground to cover on their path to true love and happily ever after. Bram is the quintessential alpha lover - larger than life, sexy as sin, and possessed of a compassionate heart that's willing to love the insecurity out of his lover. Bram is willing and able to be everything that James needs, making him a perfect fit for the angst-ridden architect. James is working hard at overcoming his insecurities, though he falls off the wagon every so often - but that's okay, Bram's shoulders are wide enough to share his burden. Laura Baumbach does a great job at detailing both heroes thought processes (especially James), so readers can delve into their psyches and see what makes them tick. As for the love scenes, they are hot enough to burn out your screen with just the right amount to kink to kick it up a notch.

Man love in all its glory, ROUGHHOUSING is one for the keeper shelf.

James and Bram are back in this sequel to the bestselling A Bit of Rough! They've been dating a while now, but James is still unsure about his feelings for Bram. He's rushed into things before, and it's always backfired on him, so James wants to take it slow. Bram is so forceful, though, so sexy and convincing that it's hard to stand fast against him. In fact, Bram is the one steady thing in James' life, when everything else seems to be shifting like sand under his feet. His job is getting stressful, his apartment is getting dangerous, and James knows he's teetering on the brink of change, but is unsure what to choose. When a project at work seems to have fallen under Bram's influence through the old boy network, James decides to back off and tell Bram they have to cool down their heated relationship. Bram is willing to accommodate James.to a point. But what happens when self-assured Bram has had enough of James' insecurity? Taking up where A Bit of Rough left off, Roughhousing opens up Bram and James' relationship, following along as they become a real couple, and face the troubles that come from trying to blend two lives and two independent personalities. Their need for each other burns as hot as ever, but will that be enough to build a life on?

(Highly Disappointing)

(Well done)

(An Amazing Read)

(Looking for love, and recognizing when you find it!)

(Finding Love in Miami)
I am disappointed with Mr. Diaz's second effort...very disappointed. I want to write a well rounded review, but even that feels like a waste of my time.

Now, I am not being intentionally harsh. It is just that I expected so much, and rightly so. How can a person who makes a living writing for a newspaper and on his second novel(!), write so amateurish?

The three story lines are somewhat believable and relatable. I'll give him that. But why use the first person POV for all three characters? Most of all the things that don't work in Miami Manhunt is because of his use of it and present tense. I understand that it is easier to write in the first person, that it helps readers relate better and so makes the work easier to follow and read, but it wasn't a good choice. In Brian's case, for example, a third-person POV would have worked better, because it would have allowed for someone else other than himself to make sense of his predicament. As a professional writer Mr. Diaz should have thought about this more.

The language was bad and his technique was bad. I felt like I was reading a first draft. Not polished at all. Mr. Diaz kept repeating the same information over and over. Telling reader how Ray feels is not the same as showing us how Ray feels. The attempt at name-brand dropping was almost ridiculous, but not as much as his attempt at writing a "Latino" character. Ray, the Cuban-American character, is described as the whitest guy you'd ever meet, intentionally, but then Mr. Diaz felt the need to keep emphasis his Cuban identity and culture. Now, I am not saying the two can't co-exist, but Mr. Diaz didn't succeed in his attempt at doing so. It seemed that he was trying to write a Latino character the white readers he wrote the novel for would be content with, along with the stereotypical well endowed Latin lover, Eros. Quite sad.

Then, there was the bad grammar and...typos! I actually stopped counting half way through.

I just heard that Mr. Diaz is releasing a third novel next year. It makes me question who his editor is over at Kensington.

Johnny Diaz's latest made me want to get on a plane and go to Miami right now! I truly enjoyed the characters, their relationships with their families and each other. The characters were relatable and well-drawn. You get more than a peak into each character's life and a deeper understanding of who they are and where they're coming from. Diaz also brought alive the city of Miami with all of its celebrity, personalities and cultures. This was a fun, fun read. I see huge, huge success in Johnny's future.
Ok, I finished Miami Manhunt. OH MY GOD!!!!! This was an amazing read. I did not know how Johnny Diaz was going to out do himself after Boston Boys Club, but he did. I really loved all the characters, but really loved Ted and Ray. Brian and Eros, I felt I was left hanging somewhat, but that is just my view point.

I do not want to give too much away, but when Ray had the accident and does not fight for his boyfriend, I was at the point of tears, but was not happy either.

If you are on the fence, jump over and buy the book...You will not be sad.

The author's second novel (after "Boston Boys Club") covers a subject that its target gay male readership can definitely identify with: the problem of looking for love, and knowing what it looks and feels like when you find it.

Ray Martinez is one of three late-twentysomething gay friends in Miami, who meet up every Friday night to update each other on their week, as well as check out the new faces and bodies, at Score, a popular nightspot. Ray is the movie critic for the Miami News, lives with his lively mutt Gigli (named for the particularly memorable - and not in a good way - JoLo/Afleck film he reviewed), and is somewhat jealous of his straight twin brother, Rasco, whom he feels he is more respected by his Cuban-American family, as well as due to the fact that he is soon to be married. Ted is a reporter and "lifestyle" show host on a local television station, and, although he enjoys the recognition and adoration that status brings to him, feels a bit intimidated by the buff beauties who make up the Miami gay singles scene, and longs to meet someone who will be attracted to who he is, rather that he does for a living. Then there's Brian, the only one of the trio who is technically "coupled", though at this stage his relationship with longtime partner Daniel is devoid of all semblances of romance ... or sex ... and they have an "understanding" that they are both free to have outside sexual daliances, though no more than once with the same person. That rule is in serious danger of being broken, ever since Daniel met the sexy and romantic Eros, who makes him realize how much he is missing in the relationship.

Alternating chapters between the three friends, the book takes you through both high and low points in their current lives, as well as exploring whether one has to compromise your true desires to find a workable relationship with another person. Extemely well written light novel, with likeable characters who grow emotionally throughout the book. I give it a Score of a full five stars out of five.

Diaz, Johnny. "Miami Manhunt", Kensington Books, 2008.

Finding Love in Miami

Amos Lassen

I loved Johnny Diaz's first book, "Boston Boy's Club" and was very pleased when his new book, "Miami Manhunt" arrived in the mail the other day. I knew that I was in for a good read.
Three friends--Ray Martinez, Ted Williams and Brian Anderson love the Latin men in Miami and every weekend they spend time cruising them at Miami's hottest gay bar, Score". Ray is the movie critic of the "Miami News" and he says that the dating scene in Miami is like a one star movie. He finds the guys to be vapid and shallow although beautiful to feast eyes upon. He finally meets the guy that he can take home to his parents. Ted is the Miami host of "Entertainment Tonight" and he has enjoyed life as a celebrity. He is looking for a meaningful relationship and in doing so he does something that could cost him his career among other things. Brian is lucky in that he has a boyfriend who is very wealthy albeit older. They have an open relationship with one rule--one cannot sleep with the same guy more than once. But Brian meets a gorgeous Puerto Rican and he keeps breaking the rule.
We follow the lives and loves of the three during the course of one wild and crazy year. We read about hearts that are broken and hearts that are mended and we learn that everyday changes the way life. "Miami Manhunt" is fun and it is smart and exceptionally well-written. Like "Boston Boys Club" last summer, "Miami Manhunt" is the book to be read this summer.

SCORE

It's not just a name--it's a frame of mind.

Nestled amid peach and candy-pink Art Deco buildings, Score is the hottest gay bar in Miami's South Beach. And for friends Ray Martinez, Ted Williams, and Brian Anderson, there's no better way to start the weekend than by checking out the steady stream of beautiful Latin men coursing in and out of Score's doors...

While Miami is home to the most gorgeous males ever created by God or a lifetime gym membership, Ray, resident movie critic at The Miami News, would give the dating scene a one-star review. (It made me want to scream...)

(Dream Boy, Dream Novel)

(Achingly Beautiful)

(Amazing!)

(Disappointing)
The style used by the author seemed fresh and different from what I was used to reading. What I found most interesting was my own reaction to the material presented within the story, and how, without realizing it, I had been drawn deeply into the life of the character and his situation. In this regard, I consider the act of the storytelling to be a complete success.

It wasn't entirely obvious that I was reading a story, so much as experiencing the world and the emotions of Nathan. Yes, the end may seem a bit confusing, but it will make you want to scream, or cry, or yell, or even to tell Nathan's story; as it seems to be one that deserves telling and retelling.

Another plus for those who are pressed for time is that the book itself is a fast read; and can be completed in a single sitting if you have the patience for it. It delivers more value than a comparably-priced night at the movies, which might seem an abstract way to think about it but proved true in my experience.

A seriously beautiful novel whose characters live and breathe in your thoughts long after you finish reading. Quite unlike a vast majority of GLBT and coming-of-age pieces, Dream Boy creates a deeply personal yet almost dauntingly universal emotional space whose literary qualities are genuine and gripping. An absolute must-read for GLBT readers, youth, and allies alike. Too bad the evangelical / pentacostal ayatollahs have mau-maued the American publishing industry into making invisible new Gay novels such as this. Shame on their cowardice and mediocrity.
It is one of the most achingly beautiful book I have ever read in awhile. It is a story of two high school boys who discover love for one another in the rural South. Mr. Grimsley writes with soul of a poet that when he describes the attraction between the two boys, it is so palpable, I can feel it seeps through the pages and fill the empty space around me. Then it moves into this haunting scenes, slowly reaches the tense climax. The ending is poignant yet triumphant. I feel like I have been living in a dream and I feel sorry that I have to wake up
Dream Boy is an amazing novel! The novel makes you feel as if you are part of the novel. Jim Grimsley is such a great writer, i love the way he wrote this amazing novel! Grimsley made the characters so great, and loveable. I couldn't put this book down, it is everything you are looking for in a book, suspense, drama, romance.etc.etc
Great book! I have recommended it to many of my friends, all of them who loved it. Dream Boy is my favorite book.

I read so many reviews raving about how great this book was. I was so hyped up by the reviews I'd seen, but then, I actually read the book.

The characters felt so two dimensional and I felt that the writing itself was simply amateur. I did not find this book to be "graceful" or "heart-breaking" and it could hardly be considered "suspenseful."

(A Fine Read)

(A winner to me!)

(One of the best gay romance novels I've ever read!)

(The Best Part of Running is Getting Caught.)

(A GOOD NOVEL...AND MORE)
This is another example of outstanding gay erotic fiction. There is a good story, the characters are well fleshed-out and well-developed, there are chatty and real-feeling secondary characters, and there is just enough danger and uncertainty to keep you reading and involved.

The principal characters are polar opposites in many ways (both no longer "young men") including a "jock type" (who is somewhat physically damaged by former athletic pursuits) and a "nerd type" who is actually smart AND a great athlete. Neither is at all sure the other is gay, and neither thinks the other is interested in someone as different as they are.

But hope springs eternal, and we are treated to not only a fine courtship but a fine romance which grows and deepens nicely through the skillful work of this author.

Truly a pleasure to read, filled with humor and warmth, this is a fine work of gay erotic fiction that does not disappoint in any way. If you're looking for deep meaning and jaw-dropping action and conflict, you won't find it here, but if you're looking for sweet romance and M/M heat, "Caught Running" won't disappoint. Enjoy!

I have been reading m/m romance/erotica for about a year now, starting with fan fiction and moving up to original character, for-pay stories in the last few months. Gobbling up what I can find, I admit that much of what I have purchased has been worse than some of the worst free fan fiction (and in some cases, the free stuff is amazingly more well-written and developed). I have been terribly disappointed with the unlikely story lines, laughable dialog, absurd character actions/reactions, bad writing and worse editing. I may not be a gay male, but I live in a very diverse community, have gay friends with whom I have had discussions about their lives and loves, and I can certainly appreciate a good story laced with hot sex regardless of the subjects' gender. For me, much of my immersion into books of any kind is the story, the character development, and the interactions, and the majority of what I have read so far simply doesn't do it for me. They are little more than PWP (Porn Without Plot), which I can get better for free through sites like Nifty.

Enter "Caught Running." I did not have high hopes as I read it in a string of terrible books and was prepared for yet another disappointment. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I really loved this book, and I can't say enough good things about it. I've read it three times and I'm starting on a fourth. Finally, a keeper!

This is a romance first, erotica (and there are plenty of steamy scenes!) second, so if you are looking for one tumble in the sheets -- or the hay, or the sand, or the back seat -- after another with little plot in between, this isn't the book for you. I am a sucker for stories where the protagonists meet again years later and/or where a relationship develops once friendship is established, so this one is a match on both parts. Don't get me wrong, I am certainly not a prude -- I wouldn't be reading this genre if I was! -- and I don't mind sex in the first chapter, but it was refreshing for the authors to wait until page 107 before there was even a kiss. It's a slow, gentle builder. I liked that the first half of the book was spent with them learning to put aside biases and prejudices to come to respect one another, becoming friends. Because of this, there is an emotional layer to the physical that many of the other books I've read just don't have. Not that there wasn't a healthy dose of Unresolved Sexual Tension, but that made it fun. I enjoyed watching their mutual attraction as they try to hide it from each other and themselves, and play the "is he or isn't he" game; seems to me that these boys have some broken gaydar! I was glad to see that their insecurities and worries were brought forth to us in a way that didn't make me want to tear my hair out at the angst. And once their relationship was consummated, I was in awe of their reactions to each other, especially Jake's to Brandon.

I can believe this tale; there is no major drama, no moral dilemmas, no character flaws so large that the Happily Ever After is threatened, no big misunderstanding, no secret past life that will come back to bite someone in the arse, no hateful antagonists trying to break them apart, no last-minute quickie tying up of the ends, no obviously contrived way to get these two together. None of the supporting characters seemed over-the-top in personality or interference, but were lovable and supportive in their own rights as good supporting characters should be. I thought the pacing was perfect: good buildup for attraction, consummation, commitment. It is a simple, gentle, sweet, romantic story that drew me in and made me want to care and root for Brandon and Jake. I believed in these guys, they seemed real, like they could be friends of mine. Despite their seeming incompatibility, they are perfect for and complement one another. Like other readers, I was disappoint
