(Hot, Sexy and laugh out loud funny)

(Unsympathetic, Unbelievable)

(Baldwin sizzles)

(A Contradiction of Heart)

(Hot, hotter, her hottest)
I found this book a total delight! I had forgotten how laugh out loud funny this author can be. I loved the 'round the world romp starting in NYC, then zipping to the frigid Midwest then on to Paris and Rome.

Observing a top fashion photographer, soon to be forty Natasha 'Kash' Kashnikova, through the eyes of a mid-western baker/swim teacher, 29 year old lovely Isabel Sterling, and visa versa - was loads of fun!

Eye popping locales and a night life that is so hot the next day is a blur the reader really feels like they are on the trip with them.

A wonderful vacation read!

Have fun!

I rarely quit reading a book before the end, but I quit this one halfway through. I found myself not looking forward to picking it up because I found the main character an unlikeable person. Also I found her an unbelievable and unsympathetic character: a fashion photographer who is SO charismatic that women line up to get into her bed and club owners give her their best seat and send her their best champagne, etc., etc. I can SO identify with that! The hook is supposed to be that she falls for an unpretentious unsophisticated salt of the earth Midwesterner. Yeah, THAT happens every day. Maybe I'm not a Kim Baldwin fan. I find her writing a little wooden: this happened, then that happened, then next this happens. No mood created.
If you can read this book without pulling your honey to the floor and making her evening utterly memorable, there is no hope for you! There. Got that out of my system.

Kim Baldwin has created a hot, sexy romp that manages at the same time to be warmly touching. Baldwin is a skillful writer who has the knack of creating and maintaining tension. In this book it is sexual tension. Kash is every woman's idea of the ultimate bad girl, but Baldwin uses inner voice to make Kash vulnerable and believable. Isabel is our idea of the warm, loveable girl-next-door who deserves to get the girl she wants. Baldwin brings these two opposites together in a steamy encounter that feels completely believable. She handles Kash's growth from distant, cynical user to out-of-control, vulnerable lover with genuine compassion. Isabel's acknowledgement of her own sexual adventurousness is equally well done.

By the end of this fiercely sexy book, you will watch the lovers come together and you will be delighted to say, "Awwww."

I've always liked Kim Baldwin's books, but this one is certainly one of her best. Here, she introduces the characters of Isabel Sterling and Kash. These women are more than just polar opposites; they have nothing in common and aren't even attracted to each other initially. Of course that all changes when they leave together for a three-week trip to four continents

Isabel is a romantic. She believes in dating, falling in love, and then having sex. Her last few relationships have been disasters, but she still believes `the one' is out there waiting for her. Isabel decorates cakes for a living and teachers swimming in her spare time. Her schedule is dependable and she loves to plan and make lists. Humble about her volunteer activities and not one to seek attention, Isabel is surprised to learn she has won a magazine contest in which she will receive an all-expense paid trip to four continents, a new wardrobe, and a makeover. The only catch is she has to agree to be photographed for the magazine by Kash, a famous photographer with a womanizing reputation. Not to mention that Isabel's best friend, the playgirl Gillian, will be joining her on the trip... and Gillian has her sights set on a night with Kash. That is until Gillian realizes Isabel can't resist her growing attraction to Kash and lets herself have a taste of getting physical with a stranger.

Kash is as talented with women as she is with her camera. She has her pick of women no matter where she goes. Her last few relationships were disastrous - her lovers not wanting her, but wanting something FROM her instead. As a result, she is the master in the bedroom and doesn't allow anyone to touch her. Kash doesn't trust anyone, but she finds the natural, genuine Isabel to be irresistible. This inner contradiction scares the dickens out of her. The only question is, will either woman be able to overcome their long-held personal isolation to allow more to develop between them.

Certainly not for the faint-hearted, `Focus' is a well-told story about two women who desperately want to be loved. After finding each other, they struggle within and without to find the answers. Highly recommended by this reader.

Definitely Kim Baldwin's hottest book to date. Focus of Desire cannot and should not be compared to her previous works. Even though this book does not include action, (although the there is hot "action"), natural disasters or wildlife adventures, it does however include exotic locations, sexy characters, hot scenes and a romantic conclusion for two very different women who have to learn to look beyond their insecurities to see what really matters the most. I highly recommand it for an enjoyable evening.
There are times when a picture doesn't just say it all--it changes everything.

Isabel Sterling isn't even aware she has been entered in the Sophisticated Women `Watch Your Dreams Come True' contest, so it comes as a complete surprise to learn she has won not only a makeover she doesn't want or need, but also the chance to appear on the cover of a national magazine and an all expense paid trip for two to exotic locales. Photographer Natasha Kashnikova is a cynical celebrity playgirl who is barreling toward full, midlife-crisis mode when she agrees to take on the Sophisticated Women shoot as a favor for a friend. Kash is convinced that every woman who shows an interest in her has ulterior motives, so love is not on her agenda--and certainly not with some naïve romantic during an assignment from Hell.

But Beth's calm is soon turned on its ear when she is pursued by an arousing and wild woman named Mary Walston, who has relationship ghosts of her own. It quickly becomes apparent that neither Alder or Mary intend to let Beth disappear into the fog that easily.

(Not one of the author's best novels!)

(Fast Service Great Quality)

(Wonderful development of characters)

(FROM THE NOTEBOOKS OF MELANIN SUN)

(Fantastic)
I just didn't like this novel. I felt it talked down to the reader or it's audience. I wouldn't want my students reading this book because I felt it failed develop the main characters. The lesbian couple in the book never materialize into a couple that you want to root for. Melanin Sun never comes across alive to me. I wouldn't recommend this book for reading anyway.
I received the book within five days and it was in great condition for it to have been a used book. Kudos to the seller.
I thought this book was wonderful. The development of the character made me really feel for Melanin during his struggles and the story line broke my heart. The ending of the book was a little vague and I am unsure of it was done intentionally by the author or not, but I like I need to know what happened next!

The author, Jacqueline Woodson stated that if she had a single message to share with readers, it's that "no matter who you are in the world, it's okay to be who you are." What an excellent quote that articulates everything this book stands for.

Although this book didn't primarily focus on aspects of race, but rather aspects of homosexuality I think that it showcased some wonderful topics for readers to consider. However, I am concerned about the use of language within the book, which made me question what age range this was written for. For me, personally I would not want my child learning the words portrayed in the book, especially the ones used with a negative sense.

From the Notebooks of Melanin Sun
By:Jacquuelin Woodson

This book is about a boy. Melanin Sun and his mama have always been a whole family with a special kind of love and care. Soon Melanin is finding out that his mom is shutting doors that were always open. And now?,they have been having problems. Mel has been finding out that his mama is keeping secrets since he was a child. I think that this is a good book because it makes you laugh and cry. This book is interesting because it's in racial times.

I read this book in 1997. Unfourtantely, I lost my copy years ago, so I can't make specific references to what I loved about this book. But I did love this book very much. I have put it up there with some of the greatest books I've ever read, such as A Wrinkle In Time and Watership Down. I think Jackie did something really fantastic with this book, and I thank her for the experience.
Melanin Sun's mother has some big news: she's in love with a woman. Now he has many decisions to make: Should he stand by his mother even though it could mean losing his friends? Should he abandon the only family he's ever known? Either way, Melanin Sun is about to learn the true meaning of sacrifice, prejudice, and love.

(Terrible)

(Would have made a better script)

(Sellevision)

(Entertaining)

(Reads like a college-level novel try)
This is the first book I've read by Augusten Burroughs and honestly, I can't believe I read it through the end. The plot is formulaic and implausible and the characters are one-dimensional. Now, I understand that this book is "comedy" and because of that, doesn't have the same conventions of a regular novel. But unfortunately, the humor smacks of lazy writing and lack of imagination. In short, it's just plain bad, bad, bad.

The only people I imagine finding this funny are people who think Jay Leno's monologues are a hoot. If you appreciate good comedy, pass by this one and thank me later.

I like this author, and the book has a great premise. Unfortunately, I don't think the author cared enough about them to ever bring them to life. The situations in this book are quite hilarious -- and they would work really well as a popcorn movie. It's just not a book.
Sellevision, By Augusten Borroughs, is sadly dissapointing. It is predictible and childish. By neglecting to develop some of the characters the depth of the main character is limited. This is the story of Peggy Jean, the second leading host on the home shopping network, Sellevision. Peggy Jean is plagued by a stalker, and then devoleps a drug addiction. Lame. Another character, Max, has an embarrassing moment reminiscent of that is broadcast live on national television and is forced to leave his job at Sellevision. To handle Max's struggle to get a new job, Burroughs resorts to a gay cliche in a plot riddled with Cliches. turns to gay porn. Another character, Leigh, has an affair with the boss at Sellevision, and struggles to obtain his love. Bebe, the lead host on Sellevision, is very lonely, and channels this abandonment through shopping. She starts to go on a wide array of dates through the internet.

The thing that really bothered me in Sellevision, is that, the gay man conquered the least. In most books I read, the homosexual man is put down. I thought this would be different from a gay author. I know the world can be more difficult for gay men, but I thought that possibly, for once, the gay man would triumph. All the characters in the book make great accomplishments, While Max struggles to keep hold of his life.

Enjoyable and easy to read, though I didn't find it hilarious like some of the other reviews. Found some of the characters to be quite true to life, and reflected some of the horror of TV hosts that we are subjected to on these shopping networks!
First, let me say that Augusten Burroughs is one of my favorite authors overall. But this book just did not work. I kept waiting for it to get better, and wanted to throw it across the room when I finally finished it. I wanted my money back. More than that, I wanted my life back -- the time I'd wasted reading this. The characters are despicable and unlikeable. I checked into the order of his work, and found that he'd actually written this BEFORE "Running With Scissors." In my opinion, each book he's written has gotten consistently stronger. Running With Scissors was good, but a bit uneven in pacing and dragged at times. "Dry" was perfection. "Magical Thinking" was outstanding as well. I feel like Burroughs' talents have evolved as a writer, and Sellevision was a sophomoric effort. I think they are riding on his other successes to get this published and sold now. Or at least that's what I thought until I saw so many positive reviews for the book. Still, do know that his other books are ALL memoirs and this is fiction, and it just doesn't have the same voice at all. The whole thing felt very forced to me.
Light and funny, with a bitter aftertaste, the action ofSellevisiontakes place behind the scenes (and on the set) of a successful television shopping network, where a feminine role model, Peggy Jean Smythe, the married, Christian mother of three, begins receiving suspicious e-mail from a viewer who insists that Peggy's hairy earlobe is obscuring her presentation of jewelry during the broadcast. When Peggy fails to respond to the e-mail, but silently waxes her lobe, the cruel notes escalate, until Peggy believes herself to be suffering from a hormonal crisis that has given her a mustache, a gruff voice, and the manner of a lumberjack. Meanwhile, one of her cohosts, Max Andrews, has been fired for accidentally exposing himself during a children's special, and learns just how undesirable a commodity a penis-baring ex-Sellevision host can be on the job market. The book is an unusually smooth read for a first novel, with six or seven truly inspired lines.--Regina Marler
Darkly funny and gleefully mean-spirited, Sellevision explores greed, obsession and third tier celebrity, in the world of a fictional home shopping network. (Blah...)

(Meow for the all nighters...)

(Spotted a super author in the table of contents...)

(This one's pretty hit-or-miss...)

(Now I'm Tingling!)
Up all night did NOT have me up all night... nor did it really hold my interest at all. It's your standard, poorly written erotica, relying on the sex scenes (which were sadly lacking) to make up for the lack of writing talent. Some stories (as always with this type of book) were better than others... but all failed to hold my attention. In fact, maybe I shouldn't review this at all here... since I didn't finish the book. I would not waste my money or time on this had I the chance to do it again.
I bought this book because I thought it would a fun read. I was right. Gave me ideas about ..ya know... some ideas.. lol. It's well written and I enjoy the just enough trashiness to tantalize my senses. Yummy book for a late night read or middle of the day bordeom buster.
...which led me to buy this anthology.

I enjoyed Therese Szymanski's story `In The Mood' tremendously and then enjoyed 30 other stories by a terrific list of authors including:

Alison Tyler
Tristan Taormino
Rachel Kramer Bussel
Diana Cage
Amie M. Evans
Jean Roberts
Stacy Bias

So I had really high hopes for this compilation, especially due to the involvement of Stacy Bias, girl wonder. However, some of the stories were simply poorly written. Cliches abounded, and I found myself distracted from what would otherwise be a perfectly hot story with an interesting enough plot by the sophomorish writing.

Don't get me wrong, there are some really great stories with wonderful writing, and some are truly outstanding. It's worth getting. Just not as totally fabulous as I'd hoped.

The stories in this collection are very good, for the most part, though they are sometimes a little repetitive given that they are purportedly "true." The writing is good and, thankfully, most of the stories are about women who identify lesbian and it is mostly male-free space, which is my preference for erotica about lesbians (as opposed to the "Best of Lesbian Erotica" series which has fewer and fewer women who identify lesbian every year and more and more queer/genderbending; it's just not my cup of tea.) This is a must have for the general lesbian erotica afficianado. A couple of the stories are a little awkward in style, but again, they are purportedly confessional type true stories, not polished works of fiction.

In the tradition of the erotic bestsellers Skin Deep and Early Embraces, Up All Night presents the uncensored sizzling words of real women describing their hottest, wildest erotic adventures.

Stacy Biasis the founder of Technodyke.com, the gathering place for the web-savvy dyke. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

Rachel Kramer Busselis an editorial assistant atOn Our Backsand has contributed writings toStarf*cker,Best Lesbian Erotica 2001, andHot&Bothered 3. She lives in New York City.

(Unless you're a big fan of the "uber/Xena/whatever" genre... stay away!)

(Can Not get enough of this dear couple!!)

(Outstanding Story)

(Intense! Dramatic!)

(An excellent re-telling for the beginning of this series)
I guess I shouldn't be so harsh, considering the plot and writing are more than adequate, but do the main characters have to refer to each other as "amazon" and "pygmy" throughout the entire book!? Seriously! Anyways, I might not have found "Without Warning" as disappointing had I not just read MacGregor's Out of Love, which was simply wonderful. Both books share the "across the tracks / different worlds" angle but I was never able to get into the characters in WW, which weren't hashed out enough. Maybe the author should have kept it in its original format (I believe there were three intertwined stories in one book, but I'm probably mistaken) rather than try to re-publish them as stand-alone books.
Awesome story with terrific and witty characters, a wonderfully endearing romance

Fantastic page turning writing. You really get to know the people. The story is a wonderful romance that develops into a relationship not only with themselves but also their families and friends. The characters are utterly endearing without being stereotypical. Wonderful humor as always from this author.

This is a six star book !

Out of Love - 2007 Lambda Literary Award winner

I had not read Shaken yet I had heard a great deal about the book. When I purchased Without Warning I was eagerly anticipating the story line. I was not disappointed. This is the BEST lesbian romance book I have read. I would have given it ten stars if I could have. I have read several of this authors work and this is truly my favorite. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to this one.

I was truly amazed how I was sucked into the story to the point that I could not put the book down. I stayed up all night and read it. I love the way author developed her characters. Lily and Anna meet in the aftermath of an earthquake. The struggles they face just to survive keeps you on the edge of your seat. This was truly a great book from start to finish.

Great character development. Great Story.

Life can change...change without notice...change without warning. Anna Kaklis and Lily Stewart, two women who never thought they'd be facing one of the worst nightmares imaginable. They're trapped...under tons of steel, concrete and dirt when the shopping mall they are in collapses in the aftermath of an earthquake.

With no choice but to rely on each other for survival Anna and Lily begin the arduous trek towards freedom. No easy task considering, it's dark, air is in short supply and one of them is injured. The going is slow, consuming time, energy and hope. However, along the way, both women find themselves quickly forming a tentative friendship. A friendship that may or not have a future as another crisis strikes...just as rescue arrives.

In the chaos that ensues, Lily and Anna are separated and efforts to find each other prove futile until a chance encounter brings the two together once again. Fate, it seems, has plans for both Lily and Anna, plans that bring many questions, plans causing each woman to question her own life, her own future. Questions neither woman is sure she even understands or wants the answers to. Many question fate. Will Anna and Lily? Or will they simply accept fate's plan and let a second chance lead to the possibility of a life together? Will they understand that love finds you when, where and how it wants to...even in the midst of an earthquake?

First published as a novel compilation of three stories titled Shaken, Without Warning is a new telling of an old story of the first in that trilogy, proving without a doubt that a good story, like a fine wine, only improves with age. In this re-telling of a classic adventure, KG MacGregor does an outstanding job of displaying both her growth as a writer and her skill with the written word. Fans of Without Warning will not want to miss reading her other works: the Lammy Award finalist in lesbian fiction - Out of Love, Mulligan, The House on Sandstone, Sumter Point, Just This Once, Malicious Pursuit, as well as her contribution in the anthology, Undercover Tales. Her upcoming book, Secrets So Deep is sure to be eagerly awaited by longtime fans of this author.

I'm a big fan of this author's. Upon reading the foreword for this book, all about how she went back and fleshed out the online version of this story I read years ago, I couldn't wait to read the new version. I was not disappointed. My only quibble would probably be that she often ends her books too quickly for me. We get all this build-up throughout the book laying the foundation for the characters to get together, but then we don't get any time with them as a couple, really. However, that's especially minor here, since we know that there are subsequent books waiting in the wings.

KG really takes her time in this book, establishing the characters, their family and friends. She does an excellent job of creating "real" people. They are human, with faults. They make mistakes, but they also have triumphs.

Anna's and Lily's first meeting in the earthquake is quite dramatic, and sets a good stage. I love their humor and banter from the start. I really enjoyed following Anna on her journey through re-examining her marriage, then her life in a different context. It was nice to have her sister Kim there as a foil, pointing out observations of her own, and supporting Anna as she figures things out.

Lily was great as well, as she tries to protect herself and her heart despite her inability to resist just being with Anna. Her friends and family provide a good support system as well, something I really like to have in books.

Well-written. Well-edited. Delightfully fleshed out from the old original version. I can't wait for the sequel.

On a day that begins like any other, a violent earthquake strikes Los Angeles, plunging the region into chaos. Two strangers, trapped in a collapsed shopping mall, find each other amid the rubble and join forces to escape. Hampered by injury and darkness, they dig and claw their way through one crumbled store after another, emerging long after most have given up hope for survivors.

The ordeal leaves both women shaken, but their shared triumph sets them on a life-changing course together, igniting a connection like neither has ever known.

Anna Kaklis--whose perfectly planned life never included falling in love with another woman--is thrown for a loop, but she doesn't doubt her heart.

Lily Stewart--abandoned too many times by people she trusted--won't let herself believe that Anna's love will endure.

Without Warningis the story of their courageous journey through adversity, and their promise of steadfast love.

(Gay Murder delivers a great story!)

(Review of "IM")

(Three Dimensional)

(Beware The Lure Of Digital Freedom...)

(Midwest Book Review, September 2007 Issue)
Excellent gay murder mystery that kept the reader guessing for a long time! Measured backstory on the psyche of the killer gave the reader another dimension of the killer. What horrific events lead this man/boy to commit the murder of gays. Where his rage came from and his helpless life that caused him so much misery.
Well-developed characters and great descriptive narratives of places, murder victims, etc.
Thoroughly enjoyed the novel!

From the book's very first murder, Mr. Reed takes the reader on a wild ride where nothing is as it seems. Ed is a cop whose job crumbles from under him as he chases after a madman who may already be dead. Timothy Bright seems heartless and cruel, but as the story progresses, the reader learns what has made him who he is. Throughout the book, the pacing is tight and fast, catapulting you through the twists and turns, leaving you breathless, until you're reading as fast as you can in an effort to find out how it ends.

Beware ~ the violence is graphic and sexual, disturbing images that speak to the dangers of anonymous sex. But Comparetto is the perfect counterpart to the evil Timothy Bright, who haunts the cop's every move throughout the story. I found myself rooting for Ed from the start, and as time seems to run out for him, I was on the edge of my seat, reading furiously, flipping pages to find out what happened next.

In short, this book is riveting. I couldn't put it down. This is a must read for any fans of gay fiction who are looking for a good murder mystery/horror story. Think Stephen King meets Patricia Cornwell, with lots of gay sexual references to satisfy readers. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Mr. Reed's work.

Rick R.Reed has confected a mystery/horror/suspense tale as only an artist could do. Not only is the story a major page-turner, but the reader comes to know the characters as three dimensional human beings -- and one tends to care about them.

I read at least one book of mystery fiction per month. I tend to enjoy the most those works which shed light on a certain culture or role: being Amish, being a guidance counselor, being a maid, being an Irish inn-keeper, being a journalist, etc. In recent years writers such as john Morgan Wilson, Mark Richard Zubro, and RD Zimmerman have invited readers into the gay community with all of its wonderful and intersting attributes, as well as it demonic dimensions. I believe Reed has done the finest work, however, in the cause and effect within human relationships. Also, the reader cares about the characters, and flinches at some of the events which have formed their experiences. Definitely, this is not a "cozy."

A reader does not have to be gay, however, to share in this story, any more than one needs to be Catholic to understand THE DI VINCI CODE. The author develops the meaning of psychosis, displays the technology which is such a great influence in our current culture, and empathetically focuses on the effect of life minus loving relationships. As well he develops a budding relationship which adds an element of hope to the story, as well as an invitation to further stories flowing from this love.

As a Chicagoan I was excited about the use of so many places in the story which are only blocks from my home. He so well describes these settings, however, that one could live in Newcomerstown, Ohio or Rim-of-the-World, California and still share in the adventure with the same high interest. Again, this is an artist who has developed this tome.

I have already recommended this story to my friends. I want to encourage any mystery buff to explore this novel.

Thomas P. Hull, Chicago

When it rains, it pours...just ask Ed Comparetto...

The Chicago police detective's life is losing its luster: his lover has just left him, and, blamed for his failure to solve a rash of gruesome killings, he is suddenly run off the force. The reason for his dismissal: falsifying a witness at a crime scene. Ed may be losing his touch, but he knows he's not losing his mind, so this reasoning doesn't fly with him. He knows what he saw, and he knows who he talked to...slowly but surely, he gets the feeling that someone, somehow is playing him - little does he know...

Before long, Ed finds himself inextricably caught in the middle of a deadly game being waged by a sadistic killer with a malevolent axe to grind. More bodies are found, more questions go unanswered. As the clues begin to pile up, so does the danger, which Ed can handle as long as he's the only one involved; however, when his newfound love, Peter, gets entangled in the mess, the stakes are raised to a much more urgent level, and Ed knows it's imperative that he solve the case before more innocent blood is shed...

What he doesn't know, though, is that nothing can prepare him for discovering who is truly responsible for the murders - especially considering the fact that all roads actually lead to someone who died in similar fashion just two years before...

The action of IM is unmatched. Reed deftly weaves intriguing characters throughout an intricate plotline of misdirection and manipulative sleight-of-hand. The resulting mosaic is a masterpiece of suspense and nail-biting drama. Many make noble attempts at crafting whodunits, but few pull it off with such convincing realism as Reed.

The backdrop of IM lends much to the enjoyment you experience in putting all the different pieces together along the way, as you truly don't know just who/what the big picture will ultimately reveal. With equal parts action and mystery, Reed's tale is an enjoyable, fast-paced read entertaining to the fullest. Highly recommended for all readers, whether you're fans of the genre or not.
