(Intelligent, adult, accurate -- and hot!)

(Didn't Believe the Romance)

(AFRAID OF LIVING, SCARED OF DYING)

(What a Surrender)

(Beautiful.)
It's rare but wonderful to run across a book that's written by an adult, for an adult. This is no X-rated Disney fantasy about horny sailors--the dangers men faced are apparent from page 1. Beecroft's research is excellent, the characters are believable, and though there's not a lot of explicit sex, the passion is powerfully evident. One of the better m/m books I've read, definitely one of the top 10 m/m historical stories. But if you're looking for fluff and fantasy, don't bother--this is a serious piece of writing.
I had high (perhaps too high) expectations for this novel, and ordered it expecting a high seas naval romance. The author can obviously tell a story, but I felt no genuine emotional investment between the two main characters. And it took Kenyan until the end of the book to decide to be happy with Andrews, rather than do what was expected of him. Understandable given the laws at that time, but still. I was disappointed but maybe the book is too cerebral for this reviewer.
Captain's SurrenderThat is the life Joshua Andrews must live, his turmoil really heats up when he meets Peter Kenyon. What starts out as friendship, develops into love, yet Peter seems to be unaware of Joshua's anxiety. Peter thinks they are just exploring their curiosity until he takes his place in society, but events changes his view of how he really feels. The story's pace is a little slow, but the emotional drama more than makes up for that. Very enjoyable for anyone who likes gay historical.
The year is 1779 and if you are serving on a ship in this era the Captain is God, or at least he thinks and acts like a deity. The Nimrod's tyrannical Captain is pretty horrible by all accounts. He wants every man on board ship to know who the boss is by terrorizing and beating his crew into submission; if any of them fail to give him the absolute obedience he demands they pay the ultimate price. The first scene in the book is horrific - a hanging that the Captain makes everyone watch, even the youngest members of the crew who are barely into their teens. The sin for which the poor sailor is hanged is sodomy which is punishable by death. But fear not my hearties the story gets a little more upbeat from here on with the arrival on board the Nimrod of the new First Lieutenant, Peter Kenyon.

When Peter meets midshipman Josh Andrews for the first time it is not earth shattering lust immediately and they start out as friends, but Josh does fall hopelessly in love with his roommate whom the Captain very cleverly puts in Josh's sights as bait. He suspects Josh's sexual orientation and hopes to catch him in the act so that he can have the pleasure of another hanging. The relationship between the two men starts off very slowly as both are afraid of the consequences, if caught, and in addition Peter does not believe that he is gay while Josh is absolutely sure of his own sexual orientation. There is no action between the sheets until half way into the book and for me to become so immersed in the story without any overt sex is testament to the writer's skill in weaving such a wonderful tale of men at sea. The unspoken understanding and caring between Peter and Josh with just heated glances as they embark on their romance was wonderfully done and for Peter it was a step into unchartered waters.

In the masterful telling of this tale Alex Beecroft made me believe that I was actually on the Nimrod riding the waves with those unhappy midshipmen. The sustained beatings for minor misdemeanors may have been brutal but I suppose they were historically true of the era and made the story more authentic. What really impressed me was the amount of painstaking detail in the book about every aspect of life on board the Nimrod, and I found it remarkable that the writer did not shy away from the blood and gore. Since I'm not an expert on the period I could not judge its accuracy but it seemed real to me - the author must have done an incredible amount of research to make this book feel as genuine as it did.

It is difficult to believe that this is Ms Beecroft's first book as she is a mistress at the art of world building and sets the stage wonderfully for our two protagonists. WOW! I have lost my ability to articulate, or to put it simply, words fail me. Captain's Surrender shattered any preconceived biases or notions I might have had about historical romances, particularly those involving men at sea, as I was absolutely captivated and transported to the Age of Sail. The characterizations were very realistic although I loved Josh more than Peter who seemed a bit dim and selfish when it came to matters of the heart. Peter is determined to marry a suitable woman who would bear his children and he does not understand how much he is hurting Josh. When he almost loses him in battle he realizes how much Josh really means to him. The author uses the minor characters in a way I have seldom seen and they add to the story rather than detract from it as at times I was able to glimpse the action through their eyes.

For the genre there is not a whole lot of sex in the book, instead it is a true action adventure and a romance in every sense of the word - from the first meeting between the Peter and Josh, through their fumbling attempts at sex, separations, war, serious injury and ultimatums. There is so much more to the book but I would be a spoiler if I elaborated any further.

Captain's Surrender surpasses genre - it is a superb story that would rank up there with any mainstream book, and the story is what drew me in kept me enthralled until the very last page. It would be remiss of me not to add my voice to others who decried the awful cover with which this book was saddled and I hope that future stories by this author will be given better treatment.

Run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore or e-book retailer to purchase a copy of Captain's Surrender. For those readers who would like a bit more sex in the book there is a free story called INSUBORDINATION on the Linden Bay and Ms Beecroft's websites which detail the further sexual adventures of our heroes.

I almost didn't buy this book. The cover was a decided turn-off.

But then I read some enthusiastic reviews for it and finally had to read the book for myself, to know if it was really that good.

It is.

The cover might lead you to believe this is just another raunchy, endless-sex-scene-every-other-page gay "romance" (emphasis not so much on the romance). Ignore the cover! It doesn't even come close to living up to the story within.

Captain's Surrender is a romance for those of us who are unabashedly romantic at heart and know a good love story when we read it. From first glance, Joshua falls head over heels with Peter, and so did I. Peter's handsome, as well as immediately likeable. But he's also wonderfully flawed--a little arrogant and too placidly confident that he always knows what's expected of him and that he's entirely capable of living up to everyone's expectations, including his own. It takes a self-aware and emotional man like Joshua to shake Peter to the core and upset his tidy world-view. Joshua's the wiser, but more vulnerable in a way, because he is afraid to let himself think he's capable of falling in love. He has seen himself as something perverse for so long, his feelings for Peter are a revelation--and his vulnerability in that regard endears him utterly to the reader. He falls first and falls hard--and the reader hopes desperately with him that his love doesn't go unrequited.

Peter's got plenty to deal with, himself, in trying to fend off both a potential mutiny aboard ship and the matchmaking efforts of a friend hoping to marry off his only child to the dashing, eligible lieutenant. Usually I dislike female characters in gay romance novels. They are usually either obnoxious BFFs of the main characters or they are overbearing relatives, usually moms who can't quit meddling. In Captain's Surrender, I am happy to say that Emily was a breath of fresh, feminine air. She was independent without being obnoxious about it, and still innocent and vulnerable without being the damsel-in-distress. She came across like a real woman of her time period and I liked her and rooted for her and wondered how the author would work it out that no hearts ended up broken.

One particular appeal of this novel is that it does have its unpredictable twists. Just when you think it will go a certain way, it goes another, and keeps you reading to find out where the new path will lead. All the characters, including secondary ones, are so well-rounded, I could easily visualize them and understand what drove each one, even when their mindsets led them to choices that were maddening or exasperating. That's another strength of the book. The author's characters live in *their* world, in their time period, and they respond to each other and the rest of society accordingly. It makes for some powerfully affecting and interesting situations, particularly for Peter.

One other thing I must mention--if you love lyrical prose and description that makes another time period come to life all around you as you read--then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I adored the descriptions of time and place. The author can turn a phrase with that kind of rare beauty that makes you want to stop for an instant and re-read just to savor the way it is written.

There was very little I didn't like about the book. One thing I would've liked more of was the developing relationship between Josh and Peter early on. The author gives some of it in a flashback-y way that, while evocative and romantic, only left me wishing for more details of their courtship, as secret as it was and had to be. I also had some trouble following a lot of the nautical terms, but this is the first real sea story I've ever read, apart from YA books twenty years ago, so I am not up on the lingo. More experienced readers would probably follow it just fine. It was a little too much for me and I had to do some re-reading to figure out what was going on in the big battle scenes. The depth and care with which details are included do immerse you wonderfully into the story. I am also extremely appreciative of certain details left out, namely long, graphic sex scenes. The intimacy in Captain's Surrender is tender, sexy, sweet, and just exactly right.

One more thing--in case the publisher reads Amazon author reviews. Dear Linden Bay: How about a romantic, elegant, beautiful cover to go with a romantic, elegant, beautiful book? You are obviously capable of signing up first-class writers. It'd be great if you provided covers worthy of their stories. You might also want to look more closely at the formatting, because it was somewhat off in places, in the copy I received.

Captain's Surrender a male/male historical novel set in 1779, is a beautifully written tale of forbidden romance between two star crossed lovers who are trying to survive life in the British Navy during the war with the Colonies.

It's filled with passion, intrigue, and the kind of compelling heroes that you've come to expect from a Linden Bay Romance novel--two of them, actually.

(Guilt! Guilt! Guilt! And More Guilt!)

(PRACTICAL Help on how to invite the POWER of God to HEAL)

(Good Integration of Theology and Theory)

(Great for Homosexual who tries so hard to follow JesusChrist)

(Religious Right Flim-Flam)
This is one of the most poorly written books I have read in recent times. From its tortured grammer to its flawed psychology, all it peddles is guilt and self loathing despite anything the author may say to the contrary. Sexual drive, fantasies and masterbation (yes, Mrs Payne, even after puberty!) are normal biological responses. Many people have fantasies about homosexual sex, but never act them out, and have no real desire to act them out. This is not something to thrash oneself over, even as a Christian. The two main case studies in this book involve people who are suffering, not because of homosexuality but because of parental neglect and abuse. Mrs Payne and her ilk need to realise the two are, more often than not, unrelated. She constantly confuses sexuality with degrees of masculinity and femininity. Homosexuals are no more likely to be sterotypically feminine or masculine than heterosexual men and women. I'm sure some people can change their sexual orientation for whatever reason but just as some people are 'hard wired' as exclusively heterosexual, some people are also wired to be excluively homosexual and no amount of prayer, guilt or 'tough love' will change that. It will just result in one very angry, damaged and often suicidal person, not to mention broken marriages, confused and hurt spouses and distressed children. Hardly the desired outcome. All I learned from this book is that Christian guilt and the shame associated with not living up to the standards of one's peers are far more destrutive to the human psyche and spirit than the so called 'condition' of homosexuality.
Book about inviting Jesus to do it and to show you what your real need is (i.e. comfort, love, security, a hug, to be held, to be affirmed, etc.) and learning how to "hear" what He is saying and see what He is doing. A little heady reading, but well worth the seeing what its about.

I now have HOPE too because Jesus helped me with my battles with lesbianism and continues to help me- now He's helping me with my anger and frustration that I sometimes display with my children. But you know what?- Jesus is there to help me, to help you through anything whether it's homosexuality or whether its through anger or whether it's through problems with... well, you fill in the blank. He just promises to be there to help because the Bible says that Jesus "came to seek and save what was lost." (Luke 19:10). You ever feel lost? I know I have and I have been so amazed at this Jesus who never gave up and never gives up on me even when I have and think He should. There really is HOPE, my friend. The sadness and always pursuing in other women what I wanted from my mom is and what I wanted to see in me is just engulfing and never satiated or satisfied when I go at it with this route. I just felt like I only hungered for more and more versus ever feeling truly met. Well, now Jesus is teaching me a peace about myself (get that!- too cool as at one point I would never have imagined it) and more and more about sweet friendships and loving women in a deeper way than I ever could before. He's also letting me be loved in a deeper way than I've known before too- Jesus just blows me away. Take care, my precious fellow traveler. I hope you find rest along the way too.

Leanne Payne's book brings together the classical views of both orthodox theology believed through the centuries about sexuality and the Healing Power of Christ (see writings of Patristic Fathers such as Irenaeus, St. Basil, Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory Nazianzus) as well as psychoanalytic theory predominantly accepted before the removal of Homosexuality from the DSM III (and still developed by practioners today such as Nicolosi and Socarides, among others). Those who are of the more recent Gay Affirmative persuasion (i.e. the last 20 years or so) and who espouse the complete impossibility of change or reorientation for those whose values are in conflict with their sexual attractions will disagree with this and may have many vitriolic epithets and accusations for theologians and theorists of the same persuasion as this book. But the theoretical and theological basis of Payne's writings resonate with a broad spectrum of theologians such as Joseph Pieper, Thomas Aquinas, and Donald Bloesch, and with psychological theories drawn from both psychoanalytic and developmental perspectives such as Object Relations and Logos Therapy. As she is coming from a purely Christian worldview, she promotes the transforming and healing power of God through the redemptive work of Jesus in his incarnation, life, death and resurrection. For those who are not espousing this worldview, they may find those aspects of her work objectionable. And for those who espouse some sort of christian worldview that embraces homosexuality as normal and part of God's design, objections may also be strong and passionate. But in a truly tolerant and multi-cultural society, there must be room to agree to disagree, and within that mileu, Payne's work deserves as good a hearing as any soundly researched and founded work would, however particularly founded and researched it is on certain pervasive worldviews and perspectives within the multitude of alternate ones existing in our culture today.
I was a lesbian (homosexual) but got saved through the salvations of Jesus Christ. This book will teach you how to (lead people or yourself) pray and bring the great inner-soul healing and peace for any hardship and hurt that once were hidden so deep in the soul in the past and no one can retrieve it, not even psychologists. Great book, touches my heart and my soul, and help me to get out the homosexuality with a full peaceful heart and totally renewal life.
As a licensed psychotherapist it is disturbing to see that "christian" writers must attempt to vilify homosexuality in the name of "love." Bigotry and lack of scientific evidence wrapped in the Bible is still bigotry. What all believers in "reparative therapy" (disavowed by the APA and the overwhelming majority of mental health professionals) cannot grasp is that behavior does not equal identity. Certainly heterosexuality is not defined only by it's erotic states. This "old shoe" theory of a maladaptive relationship with the father simply doesn't hold water in scientific studies. Also of note, is the "relapse" of the notable names in reparative therapy, (John Paulk among others.) Mainstream mental health professionals (heathens to the likes of Ms. Payne) believe that anyone can temporarily change sexual behavior, bisexuals for example. But behavior change does not equal identity change. Promoting that it does, is the big lie of christian counseling. (...)Payne and her ilk, (dispite growing evidence to the contrary) refuse to even consider the possibility that God created homosexuals. This does not fit into the evangelical rigid black and white thinking. Sadly, the clients I see have been tortured by this "Christian love", and are seeking a real path to heightened self-esteem through acceptance of themselves exactly as they are.
Presents documented case studies of homosexuals and lesbians who have been reoriented to heterosexuality through applied healing prayer.

(Fun and captivating reading!)

(The Target)

(wonderful and witty)

(Fun action)

(She's Outdone Herself --- Again)
Target is the first book I've read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised at how well written it was. I am an avid reader of suspense, including popular authors such as Dean Koontz, but Ms. Hill has become a favorite of mine. Her story telling has a nice pace to it, she has you "know" the charactors well, they are defined and have great wit and verbal interaction that feels "real". Plot is not predictable and is well thought out. KUDOS! I look forward to reading all of her books.
This book has been my favorite book by Gerri Hill. It not only has great action but a beautiful love story. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. I finished it in one day. Since I have read it twice more. The twists are well placed and never expected. Amazing book. I highly recommend this.
I've been looking for a book like this for a long while. Funny, well written, endearing characters, action, adventure, and an extremely genuine romance.

I read it in one sitting and I'm going to enjoy several more readings of it...then I'm donating it to my library and requesting that they purchase more of Ms. Hill's novels.

I'd read one other Gerri Hill book before I picked up this one, and I was hesitant to read another because of the weaknesses I perceived in it, but I was caught without a book to read and a limited selection to choose from on the bookshelf. Another reviewer says that you have to be willing to put up with the mundane in order to get to the good stuff with this author, and I can really relate after reading this book.

It wasn't perfect, but I liked the set up, the setting, the action was serious enough, but also didn't rely on jumped-to conclusions or deus ex machina type endings for the characters to triumph (like I felt Hunter's Way relied too heavily upon). Perhaps there could have been more heat, but I liked all the characters, I liked the adventure, the writing was solid, as was the editing, making this an enjoyable read. Plus, I'm a sucker for books where the characters are going places and doing things that seem interesting, like the hiking and psychological awakenings in this outing. Well worth the read. On the strength of this outing, I will give more of Gerri Hill's offerings a try.

I confess, I'm a raving lunatic fan when it comes to Gerri Hill, my all-time favorite author. IMO "The Target" surpasses "The Killing Room" as her best romance/adventure story. It's that good, and here's why:

The descriptions of the Colorado Rockies are so crisp and vivid that I felt like I was there. This provides a lifelike backdrop for the spine-tingling action that takes place. Both of the main protagonists are uncommon women in uncommon circumstances --- just what's needed for interesting interaction between them as they face a scary variety of crises. It also lets the author develop her characters using the `show, don't tell' technique, so we get to watch their reactions to different types of situations, rather than being given lengthy recitations of their inner thoughts or past histories. As a result I felt like I was right there, sweaty palms and all, with Jaime and Sara. The plot had so many twists and turns that I was guessing about the outcome (usually incorrectly) all the way to the end.

I wonder if Hill will outdo herself again in her next book. I can't imagine it, but I'm anxious to find out.

Sara Michaels is the daughter of a prominent senator who has just announced his candidacy for President of the United States--the same senator who has been receiving death threats against his family.

Sara Michaels is also the owner of a self-help clinic and is hell-bent--despite the FBI's warnings--on leading a group of ten women on a two-week sojourn through the Rocky Mountains.

In an effort to protect Sara, the FBI recruits homicide detective Jaime Hutchinson to infiltrate the group and secretly provide the protection they are so certain Sara will need. After some clever maneuvering, Jaime finds herself welcomed by the ten conservative women--who soon begin playing matchmaker with Sara and Jaime.
But then Jaime is reminded of the reason that she has joined this group of women when she's forced to lead them out of the mountains and away from a sniper's bullets.

Will Sara finally figure out who is behind the death threats? And will Jaime realize the truth--and be able to save Sara before it's too late?

(Wild Raspberries by Jane Davitt)
When I read a story like this, I always wonder if really in the world there are still places where a wandering boy can find shelter in an isolated cabin inhabited by a grumpy but gentle man, and be happy. Places where nature is still the Lady of all, and the nearer town is miles away, and so a mourning soul can find peace. Places where, if you want, you can live of little, harvesting almost all you need. This is the place told in Wild Raspberries, and it's a nice place.

Dan is a runaway boy. Small town raised and too soon without the gentle touch of a mom, when his father found about him being gay, Dan runs away, not bearing the hard words of the man. This is a thing that Dan does a little too often, running away when there is an argument, instead of having the courage to stand his position. But Dan is young, barely twenty, and maybe he needs to grew a bit more. Avoiding greater trouble, but still not going out without scratches, Dan arrives near Tyler's cabin.

Tyler is a scarred man, if not in body, in soul, and he searches solace in the loneliness of the nature. But even if as a former soldier, he has done things that still haunt him, he is not a bad man, and seeing a boy in need and not helping him is impossible. But at 34 years old, Tyler is convinced that he can avoid to become involved with a too young man,

For the first time Dan is around a man, a real man, who makes him feel good. There is not shame around Tyler, Dan can be bratty and free, he can flirt and play, and receive strokes and not slaps. Oh yes, Dan is a teaser, and with his teasing he forces Tyler to going out from his isolation. Even if both realize that, in normal circumstances, probably they are not made for each other, there in the isolated cabin, they are very good together. Tyler instills a bit of trust in Dan, drop by drop, and Dan gives back a bit of joy to Tyler. If only the outside world would not interfere.

The story is sweet and romantic, and also in some points, funny. And then I have always had an inclination for the May / December relationship: there is something refreshing in a young man who can have a skilled hand to accompanying him step by step into the adulthood. And even if Tyler growls and snarls, he never bites (if not as foreplay...).

When Daniel Seaton inadvertently trespasses on Tyler Edward's land, things almost go very, very wrong. It's bad enough that Dan's a runaway, but when Tyler nearly shoots him on sight, Dan knows he's in trouble. Tyler's got a lot of years under his belt, and his past doesn't let him accept strangers easily. Dan's situation is dire enough that Tyler takes him home, at least for a little while, and that turns out to be a good decision when Dan decides to stay on and help out with the chores. Tyler might be learning to trust, and Dan might be settling in to a new life, but things are not always what they seem. Between interfering friends, injuries, and their attraction to each other, Tyler and Dan have plenty of troubles. More trouble turns up in the form of Tyler's past, which catches up to them with a vengeance, and they decide to start a new life together, one that requires them to leave everything behind. Can they overcome what lies in the past to have a future with each other?

(Better left alone!)

(Loving in the Way Years: Lo Que Nunca Paso Por Sus Labios)
Moraga's LOVING IN THE WAR YEARS is a classic in Chicana literature indeed. However, the new edition just doesn't cut it. The new essays are interesting to read, but they are not as compelling as the original text. Definitely worth buying, but certainly disappointing as far as"updating"the book.
This is a classic text in Chicana Feminist literature and in Gender Studies. In the early 1980's, Moraga was at the forefront of feminist theory by U.S. Women of Color which attempted to put issues of racial and ethnic identity in dialogue with issues of feminism and sexuality. Moraga not only critiques the racial and ethnic oppression practiced by mainstrem society, but she bravely critiques the gender opression practiced within Chicano/a communities as well. A"must"for anyone interested in the intesection of race, gender, sexuality and culture. Her moving and brutally honest work brings together essays, stories and poems, both personal and analytical, in a collage that breaks down the barriers between genres as well as between political ideologies. A very powerful book.
Weaving together poetry and prose, Spanish and English, family history and political theory,Loving in the War Yearshas been a classic in the feminist and Chicano canon since its 1983 release. This new edition-including a new introduction and three new essays-remains a testament of Moraga's coming-of-age as a Chicana and a lesbian at a time when the political merging of those two identities was severely censured.

Drawing on the Mexican legacy of Malinche, the symbolic mother of the first mestizo peoples, Moraga examines the collective sexual and cultural wounding suffered by women since the Conquest. Moraga examines her own mestiza parentage and the seemingly inescapable choice of assimilation into a passionless whiteness or uncritical acquiescence to the patriarchal Chicano culture she was raised to reproduce. By finding Chicana feminism and honoring her own sexuality and loyalty to other women of color, Moraga finds a way to claim both her family and her freedom.

Moraga's new essays, written with a voice nearly a generation older, continue the project of "loving in the war years," but Moraga's posture is now closer to that of a zen warrior than a street-fighter. In these essays, loving is an extended prayer, where the poet-politica reflects on the relationship between our small individual deaths and the dyings of nations of people (pueblos).Lovingis an angry response to the "cultural tyranny" of the mainstream art world and a celebration of the strategic use of "cultural memory" in the creation of an art of resistance.

(Poor Production)

(Nice idea with some disappointments)

(A treat from the past for the non-Playstation generation...)

(if you're shopping for porn this aint falcon...)

(Loads of Fun!)
Great idea, but the production could have been much better. Photos are reproduced in a coarse line screen (300 d.p.i.) instead of the more commonly used 400 d.p.i. (think regular TV image versus HD). Cover should have been hardboard for the price. Paper stock is of poor quality. I would rather have had a higher quality production with less pages/photos.

If you want to see a high quality 3D book, check out Mark Blum's nature series: "Galapagos", "Bugs", Beneath the Sea."

This is a cool book with some incredibly nice photographs done in an amazing technology that should have been perfected by now and utilized in every medium instead of having been almost abandoned. Many of the photographs are nicely erotic and well done.

However, I was disappointed that almost every truly erotic photo, especially those depicting erect penises or sex acts, had no companion photo and therefore no 3-D effect. I was also disappointed that the publisher didn't have the good sense to make the wire binding large enough to accomodate the number of pages in the book so you could easily turn the pages without damaging them.

All in all, a nice addition to my library, but don't expect hot porn. Most of the photos are very 'soft' but nicely staged.

Over the years there have been some true pioneers in the art of male erotica and Denny Denfield rates highly amongst them! As the result of a bequest of numerous Athletic Model Guild publications and photos, see The Complete Reprint of Physique Pictorial: 1951-1990 (Photo&Sexy Books) in the early 1990s, I became interested in the origins of male erotica.

That, combined with my interest in photographic effects, such as 3D, inspired me to purchase this book. Thanks to David Chapman and the 3D-impaired Thomas Waugh for collating such an O-U-T-standing volume.

I only hope that some of the current generation of gay males - most of whom have no knowledge of significant events like Stonewall (1969) or the first Sydney Gay Mardi Gras (1978) - will chance upon this presentation of even earlier (1950s&60s) gay male forays into the expression of sexuality.

Although more explicit than most of the tame (by current standards) Physique Pictorial and Athletic Model Guild (Bob Mizer: Athletic Model Guild publications (AMG): American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970, Vol. 7 (American Photography of the Male Nude 1940-1970)) this is an excellent collection of some of the earliest representations of the male nude as a sexual identity!

Although aimed at a specific audience, combined with the added excitement of 3D, I highly recommend this book for both the more mature and Playstation Generation X and Y gay males!!!

...it is, however; nostalgic, titillating, risque, kitsch, 50's and early 60's style physique photo worship fun with some (almost) soft porn (think what you'd see in a playguy or blue) content. it's great parlor table party fun and a perfect gift for those gays and single women (and perhaps a few married ones as well) that you're having difficulty finding the right gift for. if you love hard-core mapplethorpe you will be bored to tears. i found it charming. it is very saddening when you think of all the photos by mr. denfield that were destroyed over time. how fortunate to have the likes of david chapman and thomas waugh out there preserving this photographic past for the future. hopefully others will join in this preservation of gay art.
Retro homoerotic physique pics in 3-D! Who comes up with this stuff!?! It's hot and funny at the same time. Comes with viewing glasses. The only problem is getting the soft cover book flat enough to see the goods.

An amazing collection of full-color, sexually explicit 3-D photographs of men taken in the early 1950s by Denny Denfield. Denfield was an amateur physique photographer in California who worked as an accountant for the US Army. His photographs, never distributed publicly given their illegality at the time, display a skill, wit, and daring rarely seen, and with their rich Kodachrome colors and mid-century decors, can now be appreciated for their roguish, almost nave charm.

The essay by David Chapman, from whose own private collection these photographs appear, sheds fascinating light on Denfield's secret life and work (stereography had been invented in 1850, but the advent of a compact, easy-to-use 3-D camera in 1947 allowed amateurs like Denfield to produce their own). A narrative by acclaimed writer Thomas Waugh (Lust Unearthed,Out/Lines,Gay Art: A Historic Collection) places Denfield's work in the historical context of homoerotic photography over the last century.

The 3-D photographs comprise dual images that "come alive" when viewed through the 3-D glasses, supplied with the book. Equal parts kitschy, informed, and sexy,Comin' at Ya!is a collection that is both fun and historically fascinating.
