(Wasted Heart is not a waste of time.)

(A well written story and humor)

(Great book by Galli)

(Really won me over by the end)

(Thoroughly enjoyable read had me laughing out loud.)
Follow Austy and Elise on a roller coaster ride of emotions and misunderstandings. I was enthralled with this book. The characters were fascinating, believable, and likable.
This story is wonderful. Full of everything that makes for a enjoying afternoon read. Not to mention the humor, I laughed till I cried. What a wonderful personality this author must have to provide that little dry humor throughout the book. If you want an enjoyable read, purchase this book. You'll have fun and get a great story to remember and treasure
Galli writes a wonderful story of Austy, an attorney, and Elise, an FBI agent. Austy carries a torch for her oh-so-married best friend, and Elise has to wait for Austy to come to her senses and what's in front of her.

It's a fun book. Austy is a wonderully complicated character--very three-dimensional. She gets into trouble with local criminals, and her Virginia (VA) friends come to help her out. And maybe do a li'l matchmaking at the same time.

Make sure you check out Galli's second book, too, "Imagining Reality." It's not a sequel to this book; rather, it is a parallel story about the VA crew and their loves and losses.

I read the first chapter of this book as provided by the author (a great idea by the way) and while unsure, decided to give it a try. I was interested, in that the book was set in Seattle, and was on the prowl for some more escapist reading. The first couple of chapters were kind of rough, as the author struggled a bit to smoothly establish the protaganist's slightly off-kilter voice, but over the next couple of chapters as other characters entered the fray, and the main players were fleshed out, this book grew on me more and more, ending more strongly than it began, something that you don't find very often.

I'm generally irritated by books where the protaganist is consistently self-destructive, and I was worried going in to this book, given the plot description about unrequited love, but as the book hit its stride for me, my fears were allayed. The characterizations were solid, and supported in thought, action and feeling. There was romance, action, family drama, humor, angst. The emotions seemed real. The love scenes were heart felt. And this book ended up being just a joy to read (well-written, not meandering, fairly well edited). Plus, it gets extra credit for having a scene occur at a Seattle Storm game. I recommend this book highly, and await upcoming efforts by this entertaining author.

Lynn Galli has writen a smart, funny story with believable characters. We are treated to Austy's trials (literally, as she's an Assistant US Attorney) and tribulations as she settles into her new life in Seattle three thousand miles from her best friend and the woman she loves, or does she? FBI agent Elise Bridie makes an impression on Austy as her key witness on a case. While working on another case they forge a friendship that leads Austy to rethink her life in Seattle and love. Will she stay in Seattle or return to the love, friends and safety of life she had in Virginia? Are either Love or Safety real or just imagined for Austy? These are two of the feelings Austy must sort through as her old life insinuates it's self on the new life she is creating.

Austy is a character for sure. (pun intended) She had me laughing out loud with the inner musings of her mind. I couldn't put the book down and read it straight through. I agree with another reviewer, in that Austy is someone you want to be friends with and hang out with just for her comedic comentary on people and situations. I live south of Seattle, for now, so the landmarks were familiar to me and made me feel like I was right there with Austy, Elise and the others. I imagine hanging out with Austy and the Virginians say at Pike Place Market people watching would be a hoot.

Every great comedic team has a straight man that sets up the funny man. Austy is both, she is her own straight woman while her commentary and thoughts provide the comic relief in the midst of her life and interactions as she opens to new possibilities for herself.

Austy confides in us, the reader, as she takes us along on her journey in and out of the courtroom as if we are a new best friend. I imagine that the story it's self could be water cooler conversation for Austy if it wasn't about her. This book is sure to make you laugh and feel good each time you read it. I've read it twice so far and have told friends about it so they can get their own copy. This ones a keeper!

To Lynn Galli if you read these reviews, First off, Thank You for writing and sharing this delightful book. Secondly, I'd like to see a spin off book about Jessie, one of the Virginians.

Fantasies can sometimes mess up the real thing.

Austy Nunziata has spent two years pining for her married best friend and about the same amount of time berating herself for it. In fact, she's so adept at trying to stamp out her feelings that she could probably write a How-To guide on the subject. One, move 3,000 miles away from your best friend. Two, get a time-consuming job so you don't have time to think about your best friend. Three, hang out with new friends who aren't anywhere as enchanting as your best friend. Four, get involved with a striking woman who is smart, sexy, caring and, most importantly, available, unlike your best friend. Five, hope the new love interest doesn't find out about your pathetic best friend obsession before you have time to replace it with actual life-altering love.

Even following her own step-by-step process, Austy may not be able to redirect all of her misguided feelings. Becoming involved with Elise Bridie helps her realize how pointless her pining has been. But when Elise suspects that she harbors feelings for someone else, will their new found love survive the unrequited infatuation of Austy's fantasies?

(An Interesting Read)

(Five stars for book #5)

("When You Don't See Me" Review)

(When You Don't See Me)

(Humorous and Quirky)
Beck, Timothy James. "When You Don't See Me", Kensington, 2007.

An Interesting Read

Amos Lassen

"When You Don't See Me" deals with the horror of the illusions put on us by our friends and the horrors that come about after an attack. Nick Dunhill, our main character, who has come to live with his uncle Blaine because his family kicked him out after he told then that he was gay. He is now 19 and has decided to leave college and attempt to build a life for himself. He moves into an apartment with three other people and we are with him as he learns about life.
Nick comes into contact with some wonderfully drawn characters in the post 9/11 world. Nick is neurotic and somewhat annoying--loud noises bother him, he hates to ride the subway and he has a thing ageist tall buildings. He is unpleasant but there is a great deal of pain inside of him and he tries to work things out.
What you may not know about the author Timothy James Beck. He is four authors writing under one name. It is amazing that four people can manage to come across in one voice. It is a bit slow getting into this book but once you do, you are in for a terrific read.

This is the fifth book of the Timothy James Beck book series. We are back in New York with our favorite group of friends.

Nick Dunhill is the main character of this book. We first met Nick during book 3. The year was fall of 2000 and Nick was 16. Nick is the nephrew to Blaine Dunhill. Nick came to live with Blaine from the midwest after his brother and sister-in-law dumped Nick on him after Nick told his family he was gay.

In book 5 we fastward to 2003 and Nick is now 19. Three years later and Nick has decided to drop out of Art College and try to make a life for himself. One thing that the author does well in all the books is character development. This book is no exception. TJB is able to make us love our normal group of friends even more than we did as well as having us fall in love with some new faces along the way.

Warning to the fans of the book series to be prepared for a HUGE shock during this book. I will have to say that the authors address 9/11/01 in a very respectful and honorable way.

TJB is one of the best author teams and I am willing to follow them on any journey they now place on the page. I do feel sad that this book had to end the way it did as I just wanted to read more and more. I really hope the next book is soon around the corner as this is the best book series ever.

This was my first Timothy Beck novel so perhaps it was the new style of his writing or unfamiliarity that comes with a different novel as this one is but it was just 'good' for me. I found it hard to get into because of the prose and the feel that it takes a good portion of the book for the plot, character and theme to warm up and get moving. I kept having to flip the book over to read the description to remind myself what the book was about.

At first read, the book feels like a faux-autobiography of Nick Dunhill, just your run-of-the-mill "boy goes to New York to try to find himself" story. Nick is also gay, which adds a flair to his character, but doesn't completely define him. In fact, there are few expected sex/erotic scenes, which did help this book keep from becoming your expected gay erotic story. I liked reading about Nick's trouble of finding his place and see him go from having nothing and no place to really call home to, by the end of the book, having more friends, purpose, family and growth as an individual.

My complaint that keeps this from being a 'great' book is that it takes over half the book for the theme of being 'invisible' to really be addressed and applied to the main character. Around page 150 or so, things felt as if they were really picking up and the transition is almost jarring, making the previous part of the book feel as if it were nothing more than filler and wasted pages. The ending is quick and lacks the emotional punch I think Beck intended it to happen, having an almost sappy feel to it that completely goes against the grain of the rest of the book.

In all, a decent book that suffers from some plot/writing choices and an awkward ending. Not great but it's a good book.

Teh author Timothy James Beck brings all the characters to live&is yet another great novel he has written.
I read this book fairly quickly, and its an ok book. I only wish the author dwelled more on the details when he needed to, rather than just skipping over an entire event, in just two sentences. I also wish the book put more emphasis on why the main character feels invisible even though he's a good looking, funny, intelligent, guy with a lot of friends, and people that love him....
Being Invisible Is Nick Dunill's M.O.

For nineteen years, he's been "the one who disappears" to his disapproving, Midwestern family. And now in New York City, a metropolis of anonymity built on not making eye contact, he feels right at home. Walking the streets of the Village, sneaking into dive bars, cleaning apartments, and trying to co-exist in a cramped apartment with his three roommates, Nick's trying to find his way without doing anything to put his wounded heart at risk, all the while wondering, "Does anything last?"

But Nick's vanishing act is about to be challenged in ways he never dreamed. Little by little, he's being forced into the land of the living--into relationships and opportunities, love and sex, truth and acceptance, into the heartbreaking secrets of his past and the hopeful chances of his future. And the more visible Nick becomes, the more he realizes that in life and love, disappearing is not an option...

(What a Godsend)

(Authors know the transgender child)

(A must read!)

(A ground-breaking book!)

(Comprehensive knowledge and amazing insight)
This book was recommended to me by an Aunt after we sent out an email letting our family and friends know that our daughter would now be living as our son. I can not tell you enough how many questions this book answered and how much comfort it gave me to know that my questions weren't unique they were common.
And when it came time for our son to attend school as his new self this book went along for the ride. I offered it to teachers, principles, and any other person who seemed to need more information and understanding. The best part was this book does not point a finger or try to change peoples religious or political views which I sometimes find pushes people away from excepting. Instead this book just gives the facts, it tells you the details of everything on what to expect, how to talk to doctors, and what the laws are for trans children. My favorite part was at the end when it gave letter examples that your local doctor could follow to hand out to schools and other areas where you might need one.
This book has become my guide and I reference it often.

The authors show evidence of years of working "in the trenches." This is a must read for all parents and therapists who are trying to guide transgender children and adolescents. I know of no other book that is as comprehensive, practical and sensitive as this one - for that age group. hank you!
If we think about our own and others' experiences of gender identity, whether we are more gender-typical adults (cis-gendered) or transgender, then we know that one's sense of gender is not a decision and gender non-conformity is not a frivolous choice. Rather, gender is a component of all of our most innate selves. Research supports this view. Most parents do not expect to have a transgender, gender variant, or gender fluid child, so what to do when our young children show us consistently that their gender identities do not align with typical expectations following from their biological sex? Or when older children come out and tell their families that their gender identities are not what has been assumed? This unparalleled book by an author with deep experience educating families and institutions on gender identity, especially in children, and another with academic experience in LGBT studies, now makes available to many more families, as well as professionals working with children (who will certainly encounter some gender non-conformers!), very practical advice in the imperative work of supporting these kids, as well as much needed affirmation in doing so. Topics covered include, importantly: sensitivity, schools, extended family, faith communities, and the medical and legal systems. With nuanced understanding, this balanced book does not "diagnose" kids as simply transgender or not, but rather explores the normal and wide range of gender variation in children and how we can support all of them to be their truest and healthiest selves. The many voices (in direct quotes) of gender non-conforming children, their families, and various professionals make the reading all the more compelling. This book should be mandatory reading for the world, but especially for any professionals working with children, and families with children who fall outside current gender norms.
This book is exactly what parents of gender nonconforming children have needed, and it's finally here! Stephanie Brill is one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about gender identity in children. This book is great for parents (and professionals) who are just starting to learn about this issue, as well as those with more experience. It is very thoughtful and incredibly helpful.
Stephanie Brill is a genius! She has empowered me to help my child authentically become who she is. My child now expresses herself, accepts herself, and proudly embraces who she truly is because of Brill and Pepper.

As a therapist myself, I see the overwhelming need for families and children that are going through similar issues to receive some of the valuable insights in this book. Brill is the Erik Erickson, of Developmental Stages and the Transgendered Child!

I hope others use these ideas, recommendations, and suggestions when coming into contact with any children/adolescents who may have questions regarding his/her gender identity in relation to who they are and where they belong in the world.

This comprehensive first of its kind guidebook explores the unique challenges that thousands of families face every day raising their children in every city and state. Through extensive research and interviews, as well as years of experience working in the field, the authors cover gender variance from birth through college. What do you do when your toddler daughter’s first sentence is that she’s a boy? What will happen when your preschool son insists on wearing a dress to school? Is this ever just a phase? How can you explain this to your neighbors and family? How can parents advocate for their children in elementary schools? What are the current laws on the rights of transgender children? What do doctors specializing in gender variant children recommend? What do the therapists say? What advice do other families who have trans kids have? What about hormone blockers and surgery? What issues should your college-bound trans child be thinking about when selecting a school? How can I best raise my gender variant or transgender child with love and compassion, even when I barely understand the issues ahead of us? And what is gender, anyway? These questions and more are answered in this book offering a deeper understanding of gender variant and transgender children and teens.

(The Angel Singers)

(Dorien is "on song" with this one)

(Antoher Awesome Book)

(The Angel Singers)
An admission: I'm prejudiced. Yes, I've read the other 11 volumes in the Dick Hardesty series, several times. Therefore, my expectations for the 12th were high. And my expectations were more than fulfilled in this well-written addition to the series..

The story line is complex - the murder of a member of a gay men's chorus that Jonathan has joined. Does the murder involve the chorus or is it just a coincidence that the victim is one of the singers? We read on to see how Dick solves the mystery, following various alternatives to the solution, to the final conclusion. We delight in the process as Dick questions himself, trying to separate his emotions from the evidence, and trying to resolve sub-plots that develop during his investigation.

The main reason I enjoy the Dick Hardesty series is the development of the characters: the continued growth of Dick as an individual and in his relationship with both Jonathan and as a parent of Joshua, the maturation of Jonathan as a complete character apart from Dick, and the presentation of Joshua as a true typical five year old.

Lastly, I want to comment as a member of a gay men's chorus. Not only has Dorien gotten his facts correct as to the organization of a chorus, and putting on a concert. He expertly relates the emotional values within a chorus - the relationships between the singers, the feeling of family, the love of music..

I recommend not just The Angel Singers, but the entire Dick Hardesty series.

This is the twelfth, and most explosive, Dick Hardesty story.

In some ways I was quite relieved when Grant died. He was, to put no finer point on it, a bastard. And he isn't the only bastard to meet his end during the unwinding of this complex tale.

It's difficult to talk about the gripping main mystery plot without spoiling it for the reader. Suffice to say, Dick's loved ones are put in grave peril because of it. His investigations also bring him back in contact with the delightful Iris and Arnold Glick. Alas we saw little of his friends, Jared, Jake, Phil and Tim.

Dick's personal life continues to enthral. Joshua is a delight. He's a typical five-year-old kid. By which I mean, he's moody, melodramatic and messy, but still loveable. Grey does an awesome job in writing about life with a pre-schooler.

Jonathan. What can I say about this guy that I've not said before? He has grown from the innocent and naïve man who first appeared in Dick's life several stories back. His increased maturity is natural and believable. However, there still remains an essence of trustfulness and a willingness to try to find good in everyone he meets. The closing of the story had me blinking away tears at just how true this last statement is.

Once again, Dorien Grey writes a winner! This book adds another layer to the ongoing story of Dick, Jonathon, and Joshua. I love how the characters aren't perfect. They handle things like everyone else. Dick and Jonathon have real struggles and Joshua is a typical 5 year old. The mystery is great, and kept me going back an forth on who I thought it was. If you haven't read any of Grey's books this one is a treat and you will want to go back and read more.

Laurie

Knowing that the new Dick Hardesty book was due, I recently re-read the
first eleven books in the series. Today I finished book twelve "The
Angel Singers". Like a good wine Dorien Grey only improves with age (of
course I have no idea of his real age) but he continues to make me feel that Dick, Jonathan and Joshua are members of my extended family. I
only hope that he continues with the series as well as continuing with
more books after "His Name Is John"

Grant Jefferson joins the Gay Men's Chorus as a protege of its biggest supporter, and begins causing more dischord than harmony. Determined he's going to Broadway, Grant sees the chorus as the means to his end, and doesn't care much how many of the other members he uses as his stepping stones--or how hard they get stepped on.

So, when a car bomb ends Grant's recitative, there is no shortage of possible suspects, and when the chorus's board of directors hires Dick Hardesty to see what he can find out about the murder he ends up in a case as complicated as a madrigal.

(Shayla the Great)

(Romantic, erotic and gripping.)

(The Cost of Eternity by Shayla Kersten)

(Five Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!)
I really enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting! I've also read other E-books by this author (Thirty Days etc) and enjoyed them so much I can honestly say I'll buy everything this author writes. Her stuff is GOOD!!!
This is my second review of this book. I wanted to write in and say that I absolutely loved this book. It was my first m/m book and I was not disappointed. Shayla has an eternal fan in me. The book is sexy, fast paced and a great read. It is also ideal for those who like vampire erotica and I have to admit looking at my reading history that I seem to be one! A great read, you will not regret buying this if this is your cup of tea.
I love "Thirty Days" and am glad to read more from this writer.
The Cost of Eternity is an emotionally charged vampire erotica, with a tightly paced plot. I like both men here. Unlike most vampire tales, the writer does not glorify the vampire character. Rather Lorcan seems quite ordinary in physique which actually makes this character credible and appealing. Kevin is endearing in his innocence and vulnerability and Lorcan's protectiveness over his younger human lover is most touching. I love the chemistry and strong bond between these 2 men. Their sex is hot but it is the emotional pull of the story which I enjoy.
This is the first of a series, as there are 2 books so far, but it is equally satisfying as a "stand alone".

The second book focuses on a different cast of characters with a more complex plot. As for the relationship it is "more than a menage a trois" which I do not favor as I question the romantic notion of a M/M/M/F (ugh...).
Lorcan and Kevin do feature in the second book, 2/3 through the story, and their short appearance certainly enliven the plot. I hope the writer will switch back to Lorcan and Kevin in future volumes.

Lorcan is a centuries old vampire who live in New York City. He is not an eager vampire, he almost has a simple and normal life. Only he lives by night and during the sex he drinks blood from his partners. But he only chooses [...] as sexual partner, cause he doesn't want the strings derivating from a love relationship. From the death of his last mate and love, a male, he has chosen to deny himself a male lover.

Then he meets Kevin. Kevin is a young man [...] himself to gain quick money. But his third john almost kill him, and so Lorcan take him at home and soon falls in love for him. But Kevin has his own segrets and maybe the fact that Lorcan is a vampire will not be their bigger problem.

I like the characters of Shayla Kersten; like in Thirty Days we have a lover more caring and protective of the other, but the feelings of love are mutual. What I like best is that Lorcan is not so special: he is a real person (apart the fact he is a vampire!!!) not so beautiful, not so overwhelming... very normal, but the love makes him invincible at the eyes of Kevin. He is his dark savior.

A really inusual vampire romance where you can find more sentiment and romanticism than paranormal element. A sweet Valentine's reading.

Vampire Lorcan MacKenna is so tired of having to hire his blood donors. Unwilling to obtain blood via scare tactics, Lorcan tries his best to make his blood suppliers enjoy giving their blood even though the encounters leave him cold. While he longs for something more, he knows to love someone is to lose him to mortality. It is after one such unemotional feeding that Lorcan comes across a man being accosted in an alley. Seeing the young man's face in the flickering darkness and feeling an instant attraction, Lorcan finds himself saving the hapless victim and taking him home.

Kevin St. James is a starving actor. Literally. Doing his best to make ends meet without asking for help, Kevin has resorted to servicing men for money. It is during one such encounter that Kevin's life is threatened and aid comes in the form of a stranger. When Kevin wakes up and realizes what has happened, he is at once scared and then secretly aroused by the emotions his rescuer brings forth in him.

Lorcan and Kevin explore their relationship and each other. There is just a bit of a problem; while Lorcan hasn't told Kevin he is a vampire, Kevin hasn't revealed something vital either. Will their relationship continue to thrive, or will the exposure of secrets and involvement of others tear them apart?

THE COST OF ETERNITY by new author Shayla Kersten was emphatically one heck of a book. Totally absorbed, I didn't put it down until I finished with it. I laughed, I cried, and I raged at the antagonists. I can't imagine having to make a decision like Kevin had to make. I loved him for his naiveté and I adored Lorcan for his loyalty.

While homoerotic love stories are not for everyone, I found myself forgetting that one small fact and concentrating on the plot. I was blown away by the emotions of the characters and the love they shared. THE COST OF ETERNITY is the second book I have read by Shayla Kersten and, all in all, it was a thoroughly gratifying read. I can't wait to see what else this wonderful new author releases!

(Good Novel, Strong Love Story)

(The Price was Worth It)

(A love story that's surprising --- for how good it is)

(Very Moving Work)

(A beautifully told love story)
Unlike Terry Castle of "The New Republic", I'm not convinced that Nabokov used Carol and Therese's trip in "The Price of Salt" as a template for the extended "vacation" that Humbert Humbert and Dolores Haze took in "Lolita". If he did, he expanded it in richness and depth about a thousand-fold. "The Price of Salt", while no "Lolita", is an interesting work in its own right. Carol and Therese meet in the toy section of the department store where the latter works; they embark on a friendship, and fall in love. Carol happens to be married, albeit unhappily. She also happens to have a young daughter. It takes the two quite awhile to sleep together, so those in search of quick, cheap thrills--not that there's anything wrong with that--might be disappointed. And when they finally do, Highsmith's prose drifts into the nebulous vagaries of poetry, reminding us that this was, indeed, written in the 1950's.
"The Price of Salt" didn't grab and possess me the way Jane Rule's "Desert of the Heart" did, which isn't all bad. It sort of insinuates itself gradually into your mental nooks and crannies. And what lesbian, repressed or not, could turn these strange pages without wanting, at least a little, to take Therese's place one night in one of those not-so-anonymous hotel rooms?
The ending, I have to say, is rather abrupt. It left me with the exasperating "That's it!?" sensation. All and all, though, "The Price of Salt" is a solid novel with a strong love story, made even more compelling because of the taboo nature of homosexuality at the time. Most of all, it speaks volumes about the omnipotence of fate.

I love Patricia Highsmith with her sadistic view of human nature. Her description of the character's boyfriend (his forehead reminding her of a whale and his hands looking like paws) was hilarious. She is an excellent writer who uses similes and metaphors well. Not to mention the unconventional story for that day and time!
It's Christmas, and money's tight, so Therese Belivet does what any unemployed 19-year-old stage designer might --- she takes a temp job in the toy department of a Manhattan department store. Her days define dreary. The aging sales clerks seem "stricken with an everlasting exhaustion and terror." As for her customers, they're also desperate, but for a doll, any doll.

Then Mrs. H.F. Aird walks in.

Calm gray eyes. Blonde. Pale, thin ankles. Suede high heels. Her voice was "like her coat, rich and suppl
