(Unsure, but right now not buying this)
『I am looking at this when it comes out but unless this version contains the 91 minute version of Nightmare 5, I would not 2 buy this. I have the big collectors set&I would like it a smaller set but I am not wasting my money if the set is still 90 minutes in the dream child.』

(Great Movies...Wrong Move...)
『Lets start off by saying they are obviously like everyone else does when something is remade or made into a sequel re-releasing this box set to prepare for the remake of the awsome horror series from back in the 80's. Let me just say that the remake looks really good, except for the fact that they recasted Freddy? How can that ever happen? Anyways...

This box set in my mind is considered theft from your wallet or purse. They re-release them and with no special extras. You get what I mean though! Just the regular first released editions and also with no 3d glasses as in the first dvd box set released. Plus NO Freddy Encyclopedia with info. on Freddy? Who would want this box set for more money out of your wallet when you can hurry and buy the original dvd box release with a bunch of extras for dollars less? WARNING THOUGH: They will purposly make the first box set out of print just so you'll have to buy this ridiculous box set for more of a cost.

In my opinion...Your wasting your money!!!』

(Pathetic marketing ploy for Nightmare reboot)
『The previous review covered all of the logistical problems with this new collection: higher cost with less content. Now let's go over another disturbing problem: the cover. It features the wrong/new Freddy; Robert Englund stars in these eight films, yet the cover features Jackie Earle Haley's lame new rendition. This is just another cheesy gimmick intended to raise interest in the Nightmare reboot. New Line cinema should be ashamed for whoring themselves out to Platinum Dunes this way. As revealed in the "Nightmare Encyclopedia" from the original box set, New Line was a struggling, no-name company before the Nightmare franchise; Nightmare made them what they are today. Yet the makers of the reboot have repeatedly disrespected both Wes Craven and Robert Englund, and this cover shows that New Line's alliances lay with Platinum Dunes, and not with the creative forces that made them rich.

If you are a fan of the Nightmare series, do what was recommended above and buy the original box set, and Freddy vs. Jason by itself. You may pay a little more, but I believe the special features are more than worth the price. If you want all the films as cheaply as possible, then buy both Film Favorite four packs; you will save $12 compared to this set.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-4: 4 Film Favorites
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5-8: 4 Film Favorites
The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection』

(Disappointed)
『Extremely happy with the shipping time of delivery. Was estimated to arrive in a months time but got it a week later.
However the product itself was not so satisfying. Each of the 8 discs have marks and scratches on them. I have watched 3 of the discs and so far all is good. Also the inside of the dvd covers were all broken. Poor effort I must say.
Besides that, Nightmare on Elm Street is a great collection!』

(Triple Dipped)
『Unless the original Nightmare on Elm Street box set is going out of print then don't bother with this set. No improvements on this set but comes out in time to cash in on the remake of the original Nightmare on Elm Street. It takes out the Nightmare Encyclopedia, which is well worth checking out, and replaces it with the subpar Freddy VS Jason. Didn't they just re-release these movies in a four pack anyways? Save your money and either buy the 4 Film Favorites dvds which includes all 8 films but way cheaper (and probably what this set consist of) or buy the original set for basically the same price and get the cool Nightmare Encyclopeida, it's your money.』
『For two generations Freddy Krueger has scared the dickens out of movie goers. Now the most-dreamed-about name in horror history can be seen from beginning to end in this must-have collection.』
『In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers ofHalloween), the son (Jason ofFriday the 13thfame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of theNightmare on Elm Streetfilms. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of theNightmare on Elm Streetseries were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, butsixmore sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion inScreamthat the firstNightmarefilm was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment,Dream Warriors(starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film,The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film,New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of theScreamfilms and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare.--Mark Englehart

(a disqusting thing to see)
『I do not condone any action with violence toward children. This is a fairly sanitized version of what happened. The sad thing is that children will be so very cruel to each other and especially toward someone who becomes marked as an outsider or target. This is called scapegoating. Children will know about dead bodies and bring friends and other back to see it.
Finally, someone breaks and makes a phone call. Or perhaps a stranger wanders upon the body also. Yet this person makes a phone call.
I would not buy a movie like this. I saw it at a friends house. I got up and left. It will be a cold day in a Christian Hell before I ever enter that Pastors house again.
Instead of spending money on this movie, I would reccomend donating it toward a childrens shelter.

(Sick, Disturbing, Gruesome, TOO MUCH FOR ME)
『I can handle horror movies; in fact, I can find myself laughing at them. I can sit through the Saw series of movies without a problem...

But this movie completely disgusts me. Maybe that makes it a great movie since it accomplishes its goal and conveys the message, but I really can't appreciate a movie that has me saying "Sick!" to myself over and over.

--spoilers below--

A woman has about 4 boys then takes in two girls. The girls lost both their parents in a car accident. One has polio and walks with leg braces. The other is fairly normal, with only a scar from the accident. You'd think this was enough sadness, but then the woman mistreats the girls. She whips the young girl who wears leg braces as punishment for her sister, who hit one of the woman's boys after he touched her breast.

The woman tortures the two girls in disturbing ways: cauterizing cuts made by her boys "so they won't get infected," burning a message on her stomach after one of her boys raped the older one WHILE SHE AND HER BOYS WATCH(!!!), and then torching the girl's clitoris with a butane torch (!!). She has the boys leave her gagged and suspended by her wrists. This movie should have never been released without some type of warning about the gruesome violence.

As another reviewer has stated, it makes the acts committed by terrorists in the Middle East seem tame.

What a disgusting movie! Spare yourself and your time! Very sick movie here. I only watched it to see the woman get what was coming to her. What an injustice that she was killed outright and didn't suffer!』

(Watching this movie may have scarred me for life.)
『This movie contains graphic, realistic depictions of sadistic torture and rape of children. This movie would make a collection of Taliban torture and execution videos look heartwarming in comparison. If you have children under the age of 50, don't let them watch this movie. Watching this movie may have scarred me for life. The fact that this movie was well-produced makes it all the more worse and disturbing. If I could go back in time, I would secretly delete this off my Netflix queue to prevent me from having ever watched this movie.』

(Did we all watch the same movie?)
『I never write reviews, I'm a star clicker. I click a button and move on with my life. However after watching this movie I was compelled to. "The Girl Next Door" is a poor adaptation of a novel (based on a true crime) by Jack Ketchum and is an overall poorly made film. I don't want to judge the movie based on its on faithfulness to the book because its quite faithful, which is maybe its weakness. However many of the key elements that made the book great and in general are present in any successful horror/suspense film are lacking here. Those things are acting, atmosphere and tension.

The dialogue, while true to the novel, falls flat and unnatural coming out the mouths of the actors, especially our key players Meg, Ruth and David. Meg, apart from the torture scenes, tries too hard to be a young teen in guise of the fact that she's really an adult woman. Because of that she lacks the precociousness and strength she had in the book, which also made her sympathetic. Ruth, who's supposed to be a domineering adult figure with violent outbursts, seems to have one dimension, a kind of laissez faire attitude. She's not frightening, she's not intimidating, everything she says is just sarcastic and snide, which is just annoying. Her character never changes and neither does David, our hero. From the start, David lacks the humanity and faults of a child. We never get the sense of why he doesn't just tell his parents what's going on the next door. We never get the feeling that he's feels powerless as a kid in an adult world. One huge difference between the book and the film that made David's character, is that in the book, David wanted to watch the torture in the beginning, he couldn't help himself which is why the Chandlers kept him around, cause he was one of them. In the film, from the start David is conflicted, and horrified by what he sees, he wants to get out immediately, which makes his relationship with the Chandlers awkward, because it leaves us wondering, why the hell do they keep this whiny kid around and not kick his ass already?

The atmosphere and tension are nonexistent in the film. The lightening, for some reason is fairly high key in certain major scenes. Instead of adding to the horror, it kind of diminishes the power of it and makes it bland. The director also kept many of the violent scenes on a wide shot (I'm especially referring the the climax between Ruth and David), which takes you out of the film, when you realize how funny it looks, since he's pint sized. The story is so linear in attempts to stay faithful to the novel that it forgoes visual storyline and the element of surprise and by the end you're left wondering, "Oh that's it?". In other words, it's just not scary and it's sad, because the reality of this subject is damningly horrifying and terrible.

(An Honest Depiction of Adolscence)
『There's a reason why the "The Girl Next Door" is disturbing: The nonchalance with which the other children approach seeing the torture and mutilation of one of their peers is brutally truthful right down to the bone. Childhood is a period without conscience, without empathy, when the id still reigns supreme. In the film, Davy stands alone as the exception to the rule. He has some adult qualities insofar that he's more spiritually and emotionally developed than other children. He has acquired a measure of compassion. However, he's too fearful to take a stand. Rather, he rather naively resorts to trying to help Meg escape rather than go against peer pressure in a manner that is obvious. This film is perhaps the potent extract of the childhood id, and one of the more honest coming-of-age stories. The question remains: does evil "Aunt Ruth" bear more responsibility than the little monsters who torture her niece at her bequest? The film's answer is an unequivocal "no."』
『In a quiet suburban town in the summer of 1958, two recently orphaned sisters are placed in the care of their mentally unstable Aunt Ruth (Emmy® winner Blanche Baker of HOLOCAUST). But Ruth s depraved sense of discipline will soon lead to unspeakable acts of abuse and torture that involve her young sons, the neighborhood children, and one 12-year-old boy whose life will be changed forever. William Atherton (DIE HARD), Catherine Mary Stewart (NIGHT OF THE COMET) and Grant Show (MELROSE PLACE) co-star in this devastating drama adapted from the controversial best seller by Jack Ketchum that Rue Morgue Magazine called one of the most disturbing reads in the history of horror literature.』
『Based on the novel by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum,The Girl Next Doordraws its nerve-wracking power from a real-life horror show--the torture of Sylvia Likens and her sister by Gertrude Baniszewski and her offspring in the mid-1960s (the case also serves as the basis for the filmAn American Crime). Here, the Likens character is a recently orphaned teen (Blythe Auffarth) taken in by Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker), a single mother who plies her adolescent sons and their friends with alcohol and lax supervision. Ruth takes an almost instant disliking to the bright young girl and her sister (who is afflicted with polio) and mounts a campaign of mental and physical abuse upon them; her sons quickly fall into step behind their mother, and a neighborhood friend (Daniel Manche) struggles with his own participation in the atrocities. As true crime thrillers go,The Girl Next Doorsucceeds on many fronts: Baker and Auffarth give impressive performances, and the violence, though harrowing, is never offered as exploitation. Director Gregory Wilson also keeps the pace brisk and breathtaking as the torture escalates; however, he is less capable in the expositional scenes, and the script by Daniel Farrands and Philip Nutman has a leaden ring at times (which undoes the efforts of the younger cast). Still, it's challenging fare for strong-hearted horror and suspense fans. The DVD includes two sets of commentary: one by Wilson, producer Andrew van den Houten, and cinematographer/co-producer William M. Miller, and another by Ketchum and the screenwriters, who pull no punches in expressing their displeasure over changes made to the film's conclusion (and their assessments are entirely correct). Interviews with the cast and crew and the original screenplay (in DVD-ROM format) round out the supplemental features.--Paul Gaita

(I'm A Sea Pig!)
『Ah yes. The early 80s slasher boom was a glorious time for fans of the genre. Some say 1981 was the peak of the boom, but a few good to great films and some underrated gems still squeeked by after that. "The House On Sorority Row" was released in 1983. Is it a great film?. Not necessarily. A good one?. Sure. An underrated gem?. I wouldn't say 'gem', but it is a good one for it's kind and provides a fun 90 minutes worth of 80s slasher fun. As for the title of my review, those who have seen the film know it's meaning, and the rest just need to watch and find out.

The movie's opening minutes are a flashback to 1961, filmed in a very blue-ish/dreamlike manner. It sets up something that connects to the main storyline and killer. We skip ahead to present day(well, present day in 1983), and the sisters of a sorority house have just graduated. Instead of leaving right away, the 7 or so that stay behind decide to throw one big final college bash before saying their goodbyes. Unfortunatley, their house mother, Mrs. Slater, is a hard old woman who will have nothing of it. The house closes on June 19 and that's that!. The sisters decide to get back and play a practical joke on 'ol Mrs. Slater that goes horribly wrong. Of course, it wouldn't be a revenge slasher film if it didn't!. Panicking, the girls try to cover their tracks and go on with life and their party. Sadly, the sisters begin being bumped off left and right by a mysterious figure, who wields a weapon very familiar with the girls.

The "revenge slasher" of this type was very common in those 80s slasher films. There is a backstory to the killer, they've been wronged, they want vengeance, and so on. It certainly isn't an out of place plot tool in the slasher genre, and can be quite strong when put to good use. I think it is here. "The House On Sorority Row" was declared a hit when it made a bundle off of it's low budget, but still seemed to of gone by the wayside and doesn't get much attention. That's too bad. It's not an original film, and it doesn't top other, better films that were dominating in the 80s horror world, but it is a pretty good film of it's kind. Mark Rosman wrote and directed the movie, and you can tell that he was really into the movie and wanted to make something a little more stylish than the norm. Apparently, he was a protege of Brian De Palma, and you can see some more artistic flourishes he tried to put into the movie. He directs the movie and all the suspense/horror scenes pretty assuredly, and he shoots some great angles and establishing shots. I think he does a wonderful job in establishing mood and atmosphere. Elsewhere, the music is a step above the usual 80s slasher synth jobs. There is orchestral music in the opening theme and elsewhere in the film that lends some extra class to the proceedings. The movie may end up just being another 80s slasher with a killer cutting up young college co-eds to some people, but there are elements here that showcase the cast and crew trying to make a better movie than expected and it shows in numerous parts of the film. Rosman also throws in some red herrings as to the mystery of who the killer is. Unfortunatley, it's all for naught. From the get go, it should be obvious to everyone who the killer is.

But what about the cast and characters?. The sorority sisters here are really no different than what he have seen before. You have the nice, good girl who is more responsible than the others, and you have the popular, witchy girl, and then there are all the others in between. Acting-wise, there are some performances here that are well played, better than the norm in these movies, and some that are atrociously B-movie bad. The main heroine, Kate, is played by Kathryn MacNeil, and the "rhymes with witch" one is played by Eileen Davidson, who would go on to become a soap opera star. Most of the others are unknowns we have never seen before or since, but Harley Kozack, who plays Diane, went on to co-star as the wife of Rick Moranis and Jeff Daniels in "Parenthood" and "Arachnophobia", respectively. Lois Kelso Hunt plays Mrs. Slater, and her voice was re-dubbed with another female's voice in the finished product. They felt her real voice wasn't sinister enough. The voice might be better, but you can see how the re-dubbing doesn't look too good in the end result. So, the characters aren't anything new, and even though they were involved in something dark, you like most of them. I found myself caring for some of their fates.

Okay, it's a horror/slasher film, so how are the goodies that one expects from films like these?. Blood?. Nudity?. Scares?. A little light for the first two, actually. This really isn't a detriment to the film. The mood and fun of the movie is the fun part and makes up for what it may lack elsewhere. That being said, there is some nudity in the film, but not much. Anyone looking for those 80s horror/comedy staples with plenty of flesh on display will be disappointed. The gore and blood is on display, but it's not over the top and gratuitous. It's pretty tame, especially when compared to the films of today. It might of been right for 1983. Finally, the scares. Director Rosman manages to set up a few startling sequences that are well filmed and lighted. It's not an intense trip into terror, but the movie does manage to be spooky and eerie in a number of scenes, and one scene in particular towards the end of the movie(featuring a new outfit for the killer) was quite a cool little jump.

In the end, "The House On Sorority Row" tried to be something more than a quick buck in the early 80s slasher boom, and it succeeded on some levels. On others, it was nothing but the typical. That's not to say that's a bad thing. The 80s and sorority house setting, the obvious cliches, some of the less than stellar acting, is all part of the fun. It has that great charm that only the 80s could give slashers. It's a movie that has some stylish tricks up it's sleeve, while reveling in the glory of all the slasher movie beats, whether it was intentional or not. "The House On Sorority Row" is not the greatest of movies or 80s slasher movies, but it is a step above a lot of the typical ones, obviously made with more flair and caring than the others of it's kind. If this is your thing, then you should easily be into the movie. I was.』

(Its worth the price!)
『What does it matter if its widescreen or not? See how terrible the remake is and I guarantee its not going to matter how the film is displayed on the tv. Paying 35 bucks for the old release is as bad as the remake!

For its time, it was a great slasher film. If you collect 80s slasher films then you will love it, if you are looking for a 5 star movie made recently, GOOD luck...most of them are HORRIBLE』

(THE ORIGINAL CLASSIC BRINGS HOME FIVE STARS)
『IM GONNA MAKE THIS SHORT, IN THE EARLY 80'S DURING THE SLASHER HEY DEY THIS FILM WAS ONE OF THE BETTER SLASHERS AND IS FAR BETTER THEN THE REMAKE SORORITY ROW, IF YOUR CURIOUS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PICK IT UP YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. THIS IS A CULT CLASSIC.』

(Why Isn't The 2009 Anniversary Edition Widescreen Format???)
『The old Dvd from 2001/2003/2005 (whichever!) states its Widescreen Format(1:85.1) with a Running Time of 93 min and Rated-R.

The 2009 reissue DVD says its full frame with a Running Time of 91 mins and Unrated. (???)

I'm glad that this release date got pushed back until January 2010 so that maybe I'll just cancel the new reissue order that I placed, and order an older DVD print from a private collector instead!

This makes absolutely NO SENSE to me!?

Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this for me if I am 'mistaken'?』

(another classic 80s slasher movie to definetely add to your collection!)
『This 1982 film is one of my personal favorite slasher movies! It was made in a time when there was still suspense in horror movies, and this one is suspenseful. It has non-stop thrills as well and every scene in the film is exciting. The killer is cool( dressed in a jesture get-up) and the female star Kate Mcneil(from MONKEY SHINES) is a great actress! Its filled with coool death scenes and stars like Harley Kozack(from Arachniphobia) and Eilein Davidson(from that soap opera...?) and has a great ending its toooo bad this one is so freakin expensive because i would like more peeps to see it. COME ON its lik 50$ for a low budget(BUT STILL EXCELLENT) b-movie! but what ever if u have to rent or whatever utoobe it just see this classic 80s slasher and a must see for old horror fans!...its being remade and the new trashy flik loooks nothin lik this 1, DO NOT be foold the 1982 film is way bettr. anyway the house on sorority row is great! I would have to say if i didn't own it already i would CONSIDER, spending my doe on it!』
『A cult classic slasher film that delivers suspense, murder, mysteryand yes topless co-eds in this high quality transfer from a recently discovered pristine 35mm print. Flirtatious young sorority sisters (Soap Opera stars Eileen Davidson and Kathryn McNeil) who are days away from graduation set out to throw one last decadent celebration. Unbeknownst to them, the strict matron of their house hides a horrendous secret thought long buried. A gruesome accident is witnessed by a hideous fiend, hidden within the once nurturing dwelling, which triggers a rampage of death and destruction. (Put down the silver bullets because the only way to stop a werewolf is uncle Gary Buesy)
『Of one the most intense creatures in the horror world has to be the werewolf. What could be worse then having a huge, fast, blood thirsty man beast hunting you down? On top of there size and other beastly features they can sniff you out no matter where you try to hide. That's certainly enough reason to fear the wolfman also making him a must during Sid's personal horror film festival (this being the 10th on the season). Now there's a lot out there in the wolf department but when given the option to see a young Corey Haim team up with Gary Busey there really was no other choice as far as we're concerned.

Silver Bullet takes place in the small town of Tarker's Mill that seems to have nothing interesting going on. Marty Coslaw (Corey Haim) is a young handicapped kid who lives at home with his parents and sister and is viewed as helpless. We'd have to suspect his experience from playing a paraplegic here helped him very much today when he pretends to be a crippled war vet begging for change outside a local diner. Anyway, a lot of extreme murders begin to take place putting the towns folk in fear. As they hunt for the killer it is soon discovered by Marty that a werewolf is doing the murders. So naturally his first option is to enlist the help of his drunk uncle Red (Busey). With a team compiled of a handicapped kid, his sister, and wasted uncle Busey how can you go wrong?

Despite the jokes Silver Bullet was a killer flick packed with some great wolf action and laughs. Unlike most, this one doesn't waste anytime with the wolf as we see a decapitation within the first 3 mins! That right there is something revered by Sid in any film. Not only was the werewolf kick a** but Gary Busey is so entertaining to watch. Especially when he builds his nephew a motorcycle wheel chair to tear around town in. Sure came in handy when he had to run from the werewolf. This one is a great choice for any fan of the genre especially if you want to see a still somewhat sane Busey on screen. Even have to give it to Haim to was really good too. Unfortunately seems he shot all his talent away early on leaving him too bad to even get cast in a horrible B. Due to the great enjoyment this one get's close with the Drive-In Totals:

2 Decapitations

1 preacher moonlighting as a werewolf

7 shotgun bearing drunk werewolf hunting rednecks, 1 getting caught in bear trap

Illegal fireworks smuggled by drunk Uncle Gary Busey

4.5 bottles of Wild Turkey downed

hand crafted motorcycle wheelchair

3 fantastic werewolf murders within the first half hour

and a body count total of 9』

(Silver Bullet)
『I grew up with this movie, with Corey Haim and uncle Red. Makes me all fuzzy inside and still scary. Good movie and fast delivery.』

(Wonderful King Adaptation)
『Silver Bullet (1985) is a very good movie. The acting is top-notch. Corey Haim is very sincere and gives a great performance as Marty, the wheelchair-ridden, yet exuberant main character. Megan Follows gives a strong, believable job as Jane, Marty's stressed and responsiblity-pounded sister. Gary Busey, once againm, is extremely likeable as the kids' hard-drinking uncle who spoils Marty. Everett McGill is great as the town reverand, who is the werewolf. He does a good job making you think that he actually believes that he is saving people's souls from hell and doesn't want to be a werewolf. The werewolf effects are a little cheezy, but this is countered by keeping the werewolf in the shadows. The music comes on as a little sappy at a few points, but all around it is effective. (One of the Best Werewolf Movies Ever!)
『I'm a bit biased since I have been a fan of this movie for so many years, but I truly believe that this is one of the best werewolf movies ever! It never gets old and has a lot of memorable scenes. I am not a fan of Gary Busey, but I really do like him as Uncle Red. That Silver Bullet wheelchair motorcycle is awesome! Do you need a license to drive that? lol. Anyway, this is a highly recommended movie. After all, it is based on a story by Stephen King!』
『A BOY IN A WHEELCHAIR STOPS A WEREWOLF WITH HIS UNCLE AND SISTER. FROM A STEPHEN KING STORY.』
『Corey Haim (back when he was still cute) and his souped-up hot-rod of a wheelchair are all that stand between a sleepy little New England town and a ferocious full-moon killer in Stephen King's adaptation of his novellaCycle of the Werewolf. This minor entry into the werewolf canon lacks the scares and sense of humor of superior hirsute thrillersThe HowlingandAn American Werewolf in London, but pays off in some nice casting touches. Gary Busey is loyal to the end as Haim's beer-guzzling Uncle Red,Twin Peaks's Everett McGill cuts an unsettling figure as the town minister, and fleshy B-movie icon Lawrence Tierney (Reservoir Dogs) is the gruff bartender who breaks up bar fights with a baseball bat called "The Peacemaker." The monstrous wolf beast, a towering mountain of fangs and fur, is the creation of Carlo Rambaldi (E.T.).--Sean Axmaker

(Tarantino Script and Texas, _____ yeah 83%)
『From Dusk Dill Dawn is a movie that kind of unfairly goes undermined in the wake of more popular Tarantino movies like Pulp Fiction or Inglourious Basterds, but this collaboration of a Tarantino screenplay (with many of his trademarks) and another independent film maker Robert Rodriguez (known for his graet action scenes and stylish Texican feel) is a great pairing that made a fairly underrated movie that some critics didn't quite get. I like it a lot better than the other Tarantino written movie, True Romance, mainly because the premise is much cooler, Tarantino wrote it later in his career, and Rodriguez's directing style does a lot more for me than Tony Scott. From Dusk Till Dawn isn't quite the genre blender as other Tarantino movies are, but it's still a wild mix, a mix of exploitation style graphic gore, vampire horror (though this movie really isn't that scary)

CHARACTERS AND ACTING 16/20

Once again, Tarantino creates another strong set of colorful characters that makes all of his movies so memorable. The Gecko Brothers are Tarantino's pair of high class criminals with distinct personalities that really offset each other. They are believable as brothers (some of their bickering is funny), and Tarantino, for some reason, makes his part of the brothers extremely believable in being creepy (he did the same thing with role in Planet Terror). I kind of shudder when he's alone with the hostage and Jacob's daughter, which doesn't happen often in movies (yes, I admit I'm a little jaded). The protagonists, a single dad and his two children, are not as memorable as the bad guys, but they have likeable and moral traits that really add some heart to this movie. The supporting characters are among the more colorful and memorable, and the vampires are awesome. As another reviewed stated, these vampires aren't $#%y, these beasts are some ugly mofos, with huge ugly teeth and a beast like appearance. And everybody's favorite cowboy police officer, Earl Mccgraw appears once again, this time to talk about the obivously hot day. Oh, and Selma Hayek as a dancer.

The acting in this movie is great, and despite the fact that George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, and possibly everybody else except Tarantino doesn't capture my interest outside of their work in film (I don't give a rats @$$ about their personal life), all of them do a great job in making all of the characters likeable, interesting, and memorable, no doubt more colorful and strong characters to add to the Tarantino-verse. Great cast, and really, how can you not love special effects wizard Tom Savini as a Sex Machine with, literally, a chain-gun for a D!)%. If that doesn't scream fun for the entire family, I don't know what does (Sorry Wheelchair Assassin, I had to use that line).

PLOT 7/10

I'll admit that this movie's plot really isn't that interesting, and the first part of the movie is nothing more than a simple crime story. Two brothers on the run will become electric chair material if they don't get to Mexico, so they kidnap a Priest and his two children. They decide to hide out in a strip club in order to get information on how to cross over into Mexico. Needless to say, the strip club is filled with vampires, so it's up to them to trust each other and get out alive. What will happen (actually, it might surprise you)? No points for guessing!

Is it a bad story? No. Just remember that this movie would be nothing if it wasn't for Tarantino's script, the cool art direction, and Robert Rodriguez's input. Maybe that's why the sequels were really, really, bad.

DIALOGUE 9/10

This is one of Tarantino's most underrated writing, really. Being that it was written after pulp Fiction, it's twice as fun as that movie was so that kind of nails it right there. Aside from the extremely quotable dialogue, the general dialogue is electric, like Reservoir Dogs was, supercharged with a great ear for hearing things in exciting ways. And the lines in here are just great, and why they are not used more often among Tarantino fans really bites (no pun intended). "Simon Says sit the _____ down". "I said Plant Yourself. Plants don't talk." The whole pu$$y speech. "Well your best better get a _____ of alot better, or you are gonna feel a ______ of a lot _________ worse", "Welcome to Slavery", "No thanks, I already had a wife". "What's in mexico", "Mexicans". "If you try to run, I've got six little friends and they can all run faster than you". Gah, I could go on and on.

And besides, a line that goes along the lines of: "Do you know what they say about me? I suck!" would be incredibly stupid and corny beyond belief if done by anybody else, but Tarantino and Cheech Marin somehow pull it off and make it work wonders. That dserves props.

ACTION SCENES 9/10

Even though the first part of the movie is kind of low key, it still opens up with a great action sequence (which involves watching a man burn alive) and a hole through the hand that makes Natural Born Killers an even more pointless watch. However, it picks up near the end, and a laugh out loud and awesome romp ensues for the rest of the movie (gotta love the ending as well. No I'm not going to spoil it). When the vampires strike (and the scene before), blood and mayhem ensue for a long time, with limbs everywhere, heads going off (there was even a cut scene where a vampire bites off a patrons head with her stomach as a mouth), decapitations, and a copious amount of flowing blood. One thing that really makes the action scenes worth watching is the way they destroy, as they melt in one of the most sickly amazing ways. Their flesh rots away, and they catch on fire. Oh yeah, and did I mention Sex Machine's gun?

DIRECTING AND STYLE 9/10

Robert Rodriguez didn't have much of the flash back then as he does now with films such as Planet Terror and Sin City, but he still could direct anyway possible. ANd From Dusk Till Dawn, despite written by Tarantino, sometimes feels like a movie by Robert instead of Tarantino. I'll admit his directing in the movie isn't as dazzling as Paul Thomas Anderson or Martin Scorsese, but he gets the job done. Good job (Come on. I had to mention something).

However, it's the style of From Dusk Till Dawn that makes it stand out, and this in turn comes from Robert Rodgriguez. I've already mentioned the kick @$$ vampires, but what I love about Rodriguez is the way he uses southern elements into a fun, celebrative whole that doesn't mock the south like some other idiotic film makers would. The soundtrack is great, with ZZ Top, his own band Tito and the Tarantula (who are actually pretty good), guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan (anybody who can make Mary Had a Little Lamb sound good has talent), and THe Blasters (the theme song), among others. It makes Texas a place you want to stay because of it's great style (I do like Texas despite the fact that they voted for Bush), and as somebody who does think Texas has great virtues, I do appreciate the style very much(though I am NOT a wannabe Texan, don't worry about that). The look of the film is graet, and you will feel very invited by the locations used in the movie.

As far as Tarantino works go, this is my pick for his most underrated writing, it's more kinetic and outgrageous than the kind of slow (but still great) Jackie Brown, and the somewhat underdeveloped True Romance. While this movie does delve into an exploitation flick, it's gross, but utterly fun. When watching vampires like this cause bloodshed, who needs story? With it's low price and good special features, From Dusk Till Dawn is not worth passing up. All Tarantino fans need to watch, or more likely, own this one.』

(I honestly don't understand how someone could dislike this movie)
『If you want a movie with a great cast, this is it: George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, consistently hilarious Cheech Marin, Juliette Lewis, Fred Williamson, the gorgeous Salma Hayek, Quentin Tarantino, Danny Trejo (who, like Luis Guzman, always makes a movie better), legendary makeup artist Tom Savini (aka Sex Machine), and Kelly Preston even has a bit part! Some may not be fans of Tarantino as an actor, but there is no denying that the power this cast has easily overshadows Tarantino's limits, and would probably even cover for Keanu Reeves. Maybe.

If you want a visceral gore-fest, this is it: vampire parts fly in gory, green explostions; whole people explode, arms and next get gouged, stakes get rammed, and there's even a scene where Fred Williamson literally rips out a person's heart. This is a graphically violent film for the lovers of over the top violence. If your primary reason for watching CSI is SPECIFICALLY to see blood spatter (read: blood showers), then this might be up your alley.

If you want a surreal, exploitative movie made explicitly for the thrills, this is it: a Holy Water super-soaker, vampires of all shapes and sizes, a penis-revolver, a shotgun/table leg cross, perhaps the most attractive collection of hookers and dancers ever seen (especially in a grungy P.O.S. bar just over the U.S. - Mexican border), and a corpse guitar are enough to cause a laugh-riot and sensory overload, sure to satiate even the most impatient movie-goer.

If you want action-adventure, this is it: Psychopathic and violent, Brothers Seth (Clooney) and Richard (Tarantino) Gecko are wreaking havoc on their way towards a rendezvous with their contact in a run-down Mexican strip-joint/brothel/bar. Along the way they murder and pillage, then take a family - Jakob Fuller (Keitel), daughter Kate (Lewis), and Jakob's adopted son - hostage to add the tension. Determining who will survive the ordeal is difficult as is, but when the group finally descends upon the "Titty Twister" (the bar), and the vampire strippers and truckers begin to show their teeth, the action goes to eleven almost immediately after pulling up a barstool.

Add in Tarantino's famous tongue-twisting dialogue and nearly perfect screenplay, direction from Robert Rodriguez that keeps the movie rocking, superb camerawork, extras pouring out of the DVD case (commentary from Tarantino and Rodriguez, music videos, deleted scenes, bios, etc.), and THE most seductive table-top dance scene in movie history (courtesy of Salma Hayek), and the result is one best guilty pleasure movies ever made, and just a great time overall. I actually pity you if you can't shut the critical analysis portion of your brain off long enough to enjoy this movie.

(Blood and gore and offbeat high energy. Outrageous and wonderful!)
『This 1996 classic is not usually my kind for film because the description included the word "vampires". But it was starring Quentin Tarantino, George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis. It was also on cable TV and was certainly worth a look-see. Well, it sure was something different for me. And I must say I wound up loving it.

The film starts with George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino as a pair of bank robber brothers on the lam. They stop by a liquor store and Quentin Tarantino brutally murders the clerk and a cop. Immediately we see he is the demented one and throughout the film George Clooney tries to rein him in. Well, the film gets more complicated when the brothers kidnap a family driving a mobile home and force them to sneak them over the Mexican border. Harvey Keitel is cast as a former pastor who has lost his faith and is taking his two children, Julliette Lewis and Ernest Liu, on a vacation to Mexico. So far, this seems like a formulaic gangster flick.

And then the group stops at a weird and wild Mexican strip joint where Clooney and Tarantino are supposed to meet up with a connection. This is just the beginning of a whole new aspect of this weird and wonderful film. All the dancers are gorgeous, especially Selma Hayek who is the star of the show. But then we find out that everyone, including all the bartenders, dancers and assorted customers are really vampires. And that's when the film really gets creepy. The next scene seems to go on forever with blood and gore and offbeat high energy. It is so strange that it actually becomes fun to watch.

Perhaps I would have hated this film if it was produced by a lesser talent. But it held me captive with its fast-paced explosive special effects. There were times when I actually laughed out loud at its unique outrageousness. That's why I must recommend it.

(From Dusk Till Dawn)
『The notorious Gecko Brothers, two of America's most dangerous criminals, are on the run from the Texas police and the FBI after a crime spree through the Southwest. Across the border in Mexico, the mysterious Carlos offers sanctuary to criminals on the lam, but first they must slip past the border patrol. Enter the Fuller family: Jacob, a minister who has lost his faith and his children, the vulnerable teenage Kate and her younger brother Scott, on a road trip in their new R.V. The Gecko Brothers kidnap the Fullers and high-tail it to freedom with the promise to let the family go once they hook up with their criminal connection in Mexico. From dusk till dawn, is a weird, but unique movie in it's genre. It's entertaining.』

(Fun Vampire Stuff!)
『George Clooney (BATMAN&ROBIN), Harvey Keitel (RESERVOIR DOGS), Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION), Juliette Lewis (CAPE FEAR), Salma Hayek (DESPERADO), Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD), Fred Williamson (SILENT HUNTER), Danny Trejo (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS), Cheech Marin (CHEECH&CHONG'S UP IN SMOKE), Kelly Preston (TWINS), John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Michael Parks (STRANGER BY NIGHT), John Hawkes (NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW) and introducing Ernest Liu star in the Tarantino/Rodriguez classic; FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. The plot is 2 brothers on the run from the law trying to go to Mexico, in hiding. They encounter a preacher and his 2 kids. The brothers hijack the preacher's RV and go to the Titty Twister bar in the outskirts of Mexico. Before they can save Richie, one of the brothers, they discover the bar is owned by vampires. Now the preacher, Richie's brother; Seth, the preacher's kids, a Vietnam vet and a biker with a gun strapped to his crotch must stop the vampires before they unleash death in Mexico. This movie is full of gore and fun violence, give it a viewing, I beg of you. Infinity out of 5 star rating.』
『It's nonstop thrills when George Clooney (THE PERFECT STORM, THREE KINGS) and Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION) star as the Gecko brothers -- two dangerous outlaws on a wild crime spree! After kidnapping a father (Harvey Keitel -- U-571) and his two kids (including Juliette Lewis -- NATURAL BORN KILLERS), the Geckos head south to a seedy Mexican bar to hide out in safety. But when they face the bar's truly notorious clientele, they're forced to team up with their hostages in order to make it out alive!』
『From a match made in heaven comes a movie spawned in hell! Young hotshot director Robert Rodriquez (El Mariachi,Desperado) teamed up withPulp Fictionauteur Quentin Tarantino (offering his services as writer and co-star) to make this outrageous, no-holds-barred hybrid of high-octane crime and gruesome horror. QT plays Richard Gecko, a borderline psychopath who breaks his career-criminal brother, Seth (George Clooney), out of prison, after which they rob a bank and leave a trail of dead and wounded in their bloody wake. Then they hijack a mobile home driven by a former Baptist minister (Harvey Keitel) who quit the church after his wife's death and hit the road with his two children (played by Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu). Heading to Mexico with their hostages, the infamous Gecko brothers arrive at the Titty Twister bar to rendezvous for a money drop, but they don't realize that they've just entered the nocturnal lair of a bloodthirsty gang of vampires! With not-so-subtle aplomb, Rodriguez and Tarantino shift into high gear with a nonstop parade of gore, gunfire, and pointy-fanged mayhem featuring Salma Hayek as a snake-charming dancer whose bite is much worse than her bark. If you're a fan of Tarantino's lyrical dialogue and pop-cultural wit, you'll have fun with the road-movie half of this supernatural horror-comedy, but if your taste runs more to exploding heads and eyeballs, sloppy entrails and morphing monsters, the second half provides a connoisseur's feast of gross-out excess.Bon appétit!--Jeff Shannon

(Stephen King CD's)
『This set of CD's is well worth the money. Many hours of great Stephen King entertainment. Whether you have read the books first, or read them after you watch these movies, Stephen King fans will enjoy the experience all along the way. Keep an eye out for the cameo appearance of Stephen in The Stand. If you like these, make sure you also obtain copies of The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption and Tommyknockers. They are all great S.K. films.』

(The Stand is us!)
『The dvd is excellent as it has my favorite S King story: The Stand. I can watch this over&over.』

(Good set - Disks are Full-Screen)
『Note: The product description on this page says widescreen, but the set is all full-screen (marked on the box and on each disk). Since these were all made for TV (pre-high-def), that shouldn't be a surprise, but just in case anybody saw the mistake on the page, I don't want you to be disappointed.

As far as the content, there are plenty of other reviews that nailed it. 'The Stand' is a must-see, and 'The Langoliers' isn't bad.』

(Worthwhile for The Stand alone)
『If you haven't seen The Stand, the King miniseries that was originally televised in 1994, then this DVD set is worth your price of admission. Unfortunately, The Stand is no longer being sold on its own (it is actually out of print for some ridiculous reason), so when my husband came to Amazon to buy me the DVD to replace the VHS that I had originally taped directly off of the television, he was forced to purchase this set. I have broken down each of the offerings in this gift set below.

1) The Stand. This 4-part series was amazingly well-done for a TV miniseries, perhaps because the teleplay was written by Stephen King himself. It is supremely well-cast, starring Gary Sinise (just before he hit it big in Forrest Gump), a comeback role for Rob Lowe, and excellent supporting performances by Bill Faberbakke (of Coach fame), Miguel Ferrer, and Jamey Sheridan as the Dark Man himself. (Notice that I didn't mention Molly Ringwald; for me, having her play Frannie was the movie's one misfire.) The movie stays fairly close to King's beloved novel, from the initial devastation to the stunning conclusion. Grade: A

2) The Langoliers. This TV movie, which aired in 1995, was based on a novella by the same name that was originally published in King's book Four Past Midnight. The story itself is interesting and involves time--basically, what happens to yesterday once we move on? Unfortunately, the concept is simply not well-executed here. The presence of various name actors--Patricia Wettig of Thirty Something, Dean Stockwell of Quantum Leap, Bronson Pinchot of Perfect Strangers, and David Morse, who went on to star in King's The Green Mile--are not enough to overcome the cheesy dialogue and overly contrived scenes. Plus, there are small things that are simply done poorly: at one point, a character is mortally wounded, and not only does the blood remain on that person's lips for hours (i.e, no one has the decency to simply wipe it off?) but also it remains a wet, bright red color rather than drying naturally. This movie is watchable, although just barely. Grade: C

3) Golden Years. This series was written by King (and others) originally for television, and it was first broadcast during the summer of 1991. It is about four hours long on two discs, although it originally aired as seven individual "episodes." The basic premise here is that an explosion in a top-secret laboratory exposes an old janitor to some unknown, experimental chemicals. In addition to the old man, the characters include his confused wife (it seems that her every other line is "I don't understand"), a mad scientist, and a psychopathic killer from "the shop" (a.k.a. the CIA). Neither Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Huffmann, playing the head of security at the plant, or excellent character actor Stephen Root (from Office Space) can save this dull mess. The story is overly drawn-out, and the majority of the plot is predictable--that is, with the exception of the ending, which just sort of occurs without ever explaining anything that happened. Grade: D

Despite the fact that The Stand is the only decent offering in this set, I am still tempted to give it 5-stars, as I think The Stand alone is worthy of that rating. However, I would have much preferred to buy The Stand as a stand-alone (no pun intended!) DVD, so I just can't give this set 5 stars, as the price is rather high to pay for The Stand alone. Furthermore, NONE of the features on this set offer any DVD extras, which was a bit of a disappointment. Still, I am glad to be able to finally own The Stand on DVD and would definitely recommend this set for that reason alone.』

(Stephen King summary)
『For horror or suspense fans, Stephen King is king of the mountain and cannot easily be thwarted. As lengthy as some of these stories are, the time-consuming motion pictures makes for a good way to spend a few hours of entertainment.I highly recommend them.』
『The Stand: Originally aired as a television mini-series, this all-star filmization of Stephen King's gripping epic of good versus evil chronicles the episodic adventures of a disparate group of people who struggle to reestablish civilization after a man-made catastrophe wipes out most of the world's population. The world abruptly ends when a deadly virus accidentally escapes from a government sponsored biological warfare laboratory. Soon people are dropping like flies from the plague, but a few survive and find themselves strangely compelled to head into the West. Good-hearted people follow the voice of an ancient black woman and head for Boulder, Colorado. Bad people follow the enigmatic Walkin' Dude to Las Vegas. It is only a matter of time before the two sides are forced into a climactic battle over the final fate of humanity. Golden Years: This made-for-TV mini-series from the notorious horror writer centers upon a hapless old janitor who begins undergoing incredible physical changes after he is accidentally covered with experimental chemicals following a laboratory mishap. Now the government will stop at nothing to get him back. The Langoliers: Ten passengers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to Boston discover that they are not the only people on the plane, but after making an emergency landing in Bangor, Maine, they discover that they are the only people on the planet. This film was based off the Stephen King short story Four Past Midnight.』

『Great movie - thank you. Could you please carry more of the Janet MacDonald movies in DVD.』

(The City of Sin and the Earthquake)
『San Francisco is a fictionalized account of the famous earthquake that devestated the city at the turn of the 20th Century. Blackie Norton (Clark Gable) is a notorious nightclub owner whose intelligence and selfish behavior bring him women and power. When innocent songbird Mary Blake (Jeanette MacDonald) comes to his club to audition, he is instantly attracted to her, but in spite of taking a job from him, she resists his advances. He does what any possessive type would do; he prevents her from working elsewhere. Having him near makes her uncomfortable and afraid of her own feeling for him, but advice from the local priest (Spencer Tracy) keeps her head mostly clear.

Then comes the earthquake.

Not all of the visuals are impressive and sometimes it is obvious that Gable is standing in front of a screen, but overall the big event is powerful and exciting. Huge chunks of scenery come down before our very eyes and watching them dynamite the city is chilling. There are plenty of historical inaccuracies in the film, the most common one being the dialogue. The actors say "on the level" and other such 30s expressions quite often. Anita Loos is a famous and talented writer, but she did not take the time period of the film into account. The relationship between Gable and Tracy is a common one in films of this era; just look at Manhattan Melodrama or Angels With Dirty Faces. But it always works; San Francisco is no different.

Also included on this DVD is a short documentary about Gable called Tall, Dark, and Handsome. It is a look at his life and fame, but the length prevents it from being anything stellar.』

『Romantic drama combines with humor, starpower combines with lavish spectacle and the walls come tumbling down! This Academy Award?-winning* extravanganza's street-splitting, brick-cascading, fire-raging recreation of the cataclysmic earthquake remains "one of the greatest action sequences in the history of the cinema, rivalling the chariot race in both Ben-Hurs" (Adrian Turner, Time Out Film Guide). Clark Gable plays rakish Barbary Coast kingpin Blackie Norton. Jeanette MacDonald portrays a singer torn by her love for Blackie and her need to succeed among the operagoing elite. Earning the first of nine career Best Actor Oscar? nominations,* Spencer Tracy is a priest who supplements spiritual advice with a mean right hook. He urges Blackie to change. But if love and religion can't reform Blackie, Mother Nature will.』
『"San Francisco, open your Golden Gate...." If the classic city anthem isn't part of your life already, it will be after a viewing of this 1936 hit, a wonderful blend of cornpone, spectacle, and song. It's set in 1906, the year the earthquake flattened much of Baghdad by the Bay. Like the disaster movies that followed (includingIn Old Chicago, a Fox cash-in from a couple of years later),San Franciscoslowly establishes its characters before unleashing the destruction. Clark Gable is Blackie Norton, a cocky and ruthless Barbary Coast character whose heart is--well, not softened, but at least dented by the arrival of an opera singer (Jeanette MacDonald) looking for a job. He hires her for his rowdy club, while his childhood chum, Father Tim Mullin (Spencer Tracy), disapproves. As they would subsequently demonstrate inTest PilotandBoom Town, Gable and Tracy have great he-man rapport together (Blackie's rampant maleness is challenged only by the fact that he knows the priest could punch him out). Director W.S. Van Dyke (The Thin Man) keeps everything cracking along, except for those moments when Cultcha rears its head and MacDonald sings an aria. When the quake hits, and the fire follows, the movie uncorks some really quite awesome special effects, including the unforgettable image of a street heaving up and separating under people's feet--much superior to the disaster effects inThe Last Days of Pompeii, made just a year earlier. Needless to say, this could only be MGM in its heyday, laying on the big budget, an acceptable level of naughtiness, and a dose of religious turnaround in the end. It worked then; it still does.--Robert Horton

(Worst disc ever)
『My review does not apply to the film itself. The movie I like but the Blu-ray release is the worst Blu-ray/dvd I have ever purchased or tried to watch. The disc is rife with errors and the loading time is aggrivating. The one saving grace to this Blu-ray disc was the sound, which until toward the end of the film, was outstanding. At the end of the film the sound became distorted.

The retail price on Fight the Future is only $16.99. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a reason for such a low price. I think this Blu-ray was produced on the cheap. A shame since the film itself is pretty cool.

『The definitive American television series of the '90s comes to the big screen with an anticlimactic whimper. And how could it be otherwise? Why should material so perfectly realized in one medium necessarily translate well into another? The series is crisply and thoughtfully executed in just about every detail, but the heart of its appeal lies in the elegant handling of complicated and evolving ongoing story lines, which is not something movies are especially good at. The big-screen drive for closure cramps the creative style, though it may also help nonfans get a grip on the proceedings. We do get some invigorating thrills and chills, however, and a more satisfying sense of the scale of an all-enveloping human-alien conspiracy than ever before, but there's no more plot development here than in an average two-part season-ending. FBI black sheep Mulder and Scully have been temporarily transferred from the X-Files project to an anti-terrorist unit to investigate an Oklahoma City-style bombing. They uncover a new wrinkle in the Syndicate/Cancer Man conspiracy--basically an attempt to help one bunch of (benign?) aliens fight off another bunch who want to colonize Earth. A spectacular, ice-bound finale thrillingly staged by series-veteran director Rob Bowman offers Mulder (but not a conveniently unconscious Scully) his first clear look at a You Know What, which in some quarters qualifies as an epochal event. Martin Landau offers the agents some crucial clues, and several familiar TV faces (including the Lone Gunmen and Mitch Pileggi's indispensable Assistant Director Skinner) turn up briefly to wink knowingly at faithful fans.--David Chute

(Amazing, beautiful animated film - but gory! Not for kids!!!)
『Dante's Inferno is an incredible animated film! One of the best animated movies I've seen in a very long time, and I watch a lot! I've heard a lot of praise and some critism for this movie... sure are NOT anime fans, if you dont like this masterpiece!!

This is a beautiful film to behold, with a story that is exciting, moving, at times ferocious, and deeply layered. A knight searches for the soul of the woman he loves... and what we perciece as a hero at first, gradually unfolds until we realize Dante is really a bad person, not the atypcial hero we think from the begining.

Everyone should check this out. It's really good for an animated film!! One of the best I've seen in a long time, and I'm not even a big video game fan!!

Dante's Inferno is also made me think. About evil, morality, the nature of god, all that stuff. It is thoughtful and intelligent, with a story that makes sense. A lot of the animes you watch make no sense whats so ever, but this made perfect sense all the way through. There was a bit too much fighting, and it seemed to move a bit too breakneck fast for me. But I was watching every moment in anticipation.

This film is interesting because it's all about point of view. Dante is in his own hell. Beatrice is in her hell, and even the devil has a point of view here. He feels betrayed by God. He thinks god is the true evil, because it made him, then punished the devil... but God made evil knowing it would rebel. It made me think quite a bit, which rarely anything does now-a-days.

An AWESOME film! A bit gory for my tastes, but it was very moving, exciting, and just plain COOL!!!

(Classic Epic+Animated Video Game Adaptation=Tripe)
『I'm not the biggest fan of The Divine Comedy, the poem Dante's Inferno is based off of. The idea is pretty cool; an epic poem with Lucifer as the "protagonist," but the prose is just too purple for me. So I was interested in this game and anime when I heard about them.

Let's get the very little positive out of the way so I can concentrate all that's wrong with it; the animation is a feast to look at. The movie is split into 6 parts each with a different style of animation so it's a little jarring, but still very nice to look at. Dante kicks ass, the monsters and demons are creepy as all get out, and hell looks very hellish.

I can't be anywhere near as positive for the story though. There are so many jumps of logic, plot holes, and pseudo-philosophizing that even the greatest animation can't redeem the film. It starts off with Dante's girlfriend Beatrice being murdered and her pure soul being pulled into hell and Dante swearing to get her back and brings along her favorite cross. On the way he meets the Roman poet, Virgil, a guide for his trek through hell, though he really doesn't do much except serve as a convenient plot device, and I suspect he's supposed to be for tutorial help for the game.

We soon find out that Lucifer wants Beatrice's pure soul and is going to marry her. "Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, etc etc" weren't good enough for him because their souls were tainted. My problem with this is when Beatrice accepts Lucifer her soul will become tainted. How could marrying the embodiment of evil NOT taint the soul? So how would that make her any better? Doesn't make any sense.

And Dante himself is pretty generic. He grunts and growls and screams as he swings his scythe around making grand remarks about slicing demons in half and saving Beatrice. He has flashbacks to times when he sinned (while in the corresponding circle of hell) and feels bad for them. During one of these moments he says a priest absolved him of all his sins, but is told that no man can absolve sins and save another from hell. That's fine and I'd accept that, except he uses his girlfriend's cross to SAVE PEOPLE FROM HELL. At one point a phantom of Lucifer appears angry that Dante saved someone from hell and at another point laughs at Dante for failing when Dante tried praying to God to save some other souls from hell (instead of using the soul freeing cross he has and has used before). Internally consistent, this story is not.

So Beatrice finally DOES marry Lucifer, since Dante had actually killed a lot of innocent people during the Crusade and was unintentionally responsible for her death (don't ask, it involves a lot of convenient plot points). She turns into a demon and attacks Dante. Dante shows her her cross and she turns mortal again and angels come and take her to heaven. An angel appeared in the 8th circle of hell just to pick up some chick that accepted God. Why not pick her up when she was still pure to begin with? Why wait until she renews her faith in God AFTER becoming the Queen of Hell? Because then we have no story.

The last problem is when Dante is fighting Lucifer, Lucifer is about to escape hell and arrive at purgatory after being released into his true form by Dante (involving a whole mess of "ha ha this was my intention all along" cliched drivel). As he's about to escape, Dante prays asking for forgiveness and that he's willing to sacrifice his freedom to trap Lucifer and himself in hell. So, Lucifer freezes solid and Dante proceeds to jump through the portal to purgatory and arrives at purgatory... what was that about sacrificing himself? "Psych! Ha ha I'm not really willing to sacrifice my happiness to keep Lucifer trapped in hell, God!" Really, there's no other explanation to his unceremonious escape from hell after making that sacrifice.

This story reminds me of a bad 90s comic that uses cheap Biblical references to seem edgey when really it's shallow and stupid. It's completely style over substance in the worst way possible.』

『Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery! These are the 9 Circles of Hell made famous by Dante Alighieri in his famed masterpiece, Dante’s Inferno, his first story of The Divine Comedy. Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic will take you on a harrowing trip through Hell as Dante braves the forces of evil, slaying demons and monsters of extraordinary imagination, all to save his love Beatrice, from the clutches of Hell’s master - Lucifer. The companion piece to the hit Electronic Arts game, Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic, is inventively told through eyes of visionary animation directors from around the world, including Shuko Murase (Ergo Proxy) and Yasoumi Umetsu (Kite: Liberator) among others. 6 Directors, 6 terrifyingvisions of Hell, 1 heart-stopping epic adventure! 6 different covers - 6 different animation styles. (The Fly (Two-Disc Collector's Edition))
『Seth Brundle is a research scientist, employed by Bartok Sciences, who has invented "Telepods" two matter transmission pods that teleports any object through space from one "Telepod" to the other "Telepod". But, it is until Seth meets journalist Veronica Quaife who inspires Seth to correct the system, that Seth achieves successful teleportation. But something goes horribly wrong, when Seth uses himself as a guinea-pig in a matter transmission experiment, as he teleports himself, unaware his genes have been fused with a house fly that was trapped in the telepod with him. Seth, now finds himself slowly transforming into a terrifying mutant creature known as "Brundlefly" as he finds himself in a fierce battle as his mutated genes begins to take over. I can't express how much I love The Fly. It's more than just horror, and it's proof that you just may find a truly great movie where you least expect it.

("Metamorphosis" meets Betty Crocker)
『I've seen a lot of films about drugs and I've seen a lot of films while on drugs, but only in Cronenberg's "The Fly" have I visited the depraved heights and depths to which a drug addiction will send its victim. Sure, at first you're flying around like a monkey from the rafters, and rocking and rolling the king-size with your Cassanova wiles. But soon enough, you despise other flesh, mumbling in the dim static, acid-reflux in overtime, dribbling all over your sugar cakes. And your acne has gone plaid.

It is by now fairly well known that Nancy Reagan was a scriptwriter on the latter installments of the "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" franchises (as well as "April Fool's Day" and "Happy Birthday to Me") during her "Just Say No" campaign in the 1980s. Nancy would come up with the goriest ways to kill wayward teen campers loose from too much reefer, while having tea with Anhk, who was in charge of Ronnie's naptime bed-wetting vision quests. These experiments were crude, but effective while humans were consigned to live in a clunky, pre-Internet world.

But it wasn't until "The Fly" -- which I at first mistook for a conspiracy involving scientists, under the command of the corporations, turning the populace insectile, a people consumed only with consuming, and rotting in self-made, technological wastelands -- that I began to realize that drugs aren't cool. Now I wear a special cloaking device and go on monthslong colonics. The man in the mirror was an inferior version of me.』

(Looks GREAT on blu-ray!!)
『I hadn't seen this movie pretty much since it first came out. A minor classic. For me, the blu-ray transfer was first class. The film looked crisp and sharp and I could see fine details in it so I was perfectly happy with it. I didn't own it on DVD before so it was a no-brainer to buy it on Blu-ray, especially for under $10. If you don't own it on DVD, get the blu-ray. If you already have the DVD, that's a tougher call.』

("Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid.")
『No doubt, you've heard that classic line before in other films. Well, this is the legendary sci-fi/horror film they are referencing every time they utter those menacing words. Believe it or not, 1986's David Cronenberg film, "The Fly", is both a masterpiece and a remake at the same time, and here's the story:

Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a scientist working on a world-changing invention. He has developed a working teleportation system! With two intimidating telepods connected to a high-tech computer, Seth can send objects from one pod to the other by teleportation, but his crux is the human issue. Flesh in general, actually, which only confuses the computer thus far. Enter journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), who gets involved with both Brundle's invention story and Brundle himself. It's this love story between Seth and Veronica that is the strength of the picture, no small part being the unwelcome third party of Veronica's ex-boyfriend/boss, the insufferable Stathis Borans (John Getz). However, the core of the film is Brundle's transformation story, an allegory for aging, disease, and death. You see, as Seth and Veronica's relationship blooms, his project's development seemingly benefiting, a wrench is thrown into the gears in the form of a tiny insect. An otherwise harmless housefly just happens to fly into one of Seth's telepods as he decides to test it out on himself, and the confused computer ends up merging the two, sending Seth into a downward spiral of physical and mental decay and distortion that at times is more than a little difficult to watch. And you can imagine how hard it must be for Veronica, who soon discovers she is carrying Seth's potentially affected offspring.

Remakes and sequels are rampant these days, with the big Hollywood studios only wanting to take a chance on films that should guarantee some solid returns, and a lot of film fans seem to be more than a little put out about it. Granted, they can feel very uninspired, and many such films, especially the remakes, aren't worth the price of a ticket when you could probably own the usually superior originals for just as much. However, there probably aren't many better cases for the "remake" than Cronenberg's take on "The Fly". The first film version came out in 1958 and spawned a couple of sequels. It definitely had its cheese factor, but myself and many others still enjoy it today. It was bizarre, but very entertaining (as the bizarre often is). The remake takes the same basic premise of a scientist getting into his teleportation pod with an unnoticed fly and coming out in a bad way for it. However, at the same time, it is so very different and adds so much to the story. It's so much more than just an update. As I mentioned before, and as the director points out often in his commentary on this blu-ray disc, the film is largely two things: A tragic love story and an allegory of aging and death. In fact, it wasn't intended so much to be about disease, but the heightened fear of the AIDS virus at the time of the film's release certainly made it seem that way, especially considering the make-up effects used on Jeff Goldblum throughout that did take disease into account as an inspiration. Anyway, this combined romance story and personal disintegration story is so masterfully presented in "The Fly" that it is without a doubt one of the most unforgettable films you'll ever watch! The Oscar winning effects are high on the gross-out meter, but nothing about this film is over-the-top (deleted scenes aside), unless you count a very disturbing childbirth dream sequence. The troubling thing about The Fly is just how realistic it all is, and it IS downright horrifying. Actually, if I had one gripe about this film, it's that I do wish the final incarnation of Brundlefly looked a wee bit more like a fly, though Cronenberg insists that he wanted it to keep the ability to convey emotion. I still think body language could have said enough and Seth should have turned out even more fly-like, but it doesn't affect the movie's excellence and it remains a masterpiece to me.

The performances in "The Fly" (the cast is very small) are outstanding. Of course, Jeff Goldblum always is a treat to watch. The writing at times is sheer poetry. The music is excellent and I already mentioned the Academy honored effects. This is one of those sci-fi/horror films that really does the genre a service by going all the way as a work of storytelling art. The Blu-Ray is no slouch either. The film looks and sounds better than ever and there is a wealth of bonus features, including a very lengthy making-of featurette and a director commentary. There are also galleries, a fly swatting game, and pop up trivia, though the pop up trivia isn't really worthwhile if you listen to the commentary and watch the making-of. Trailers, at least one Easter Egg, and other bonus features are also included. I didn't really understand the Personal Scene Selections feature or how it was different from the regular Scene Selection. Over all though, a very impressive and highly affordable Blu-Ray release I definitely recommend. Sci-Fi horror fan or not, if you are trying to build a genre transcending library of the best films ever, you've got to have a space somewhere for Cronenberg's "The Fly".

(Picture a bit soft, effects still pretty amazing)
『I just watched this on my 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. It was not the sharpest picture, but I'd say a 3.5/5 for PQ and 4/5 for AQ. The storyline, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis were great. The creature effects matched Jeff's eccentric personality well, and were a mix of funny, but still rather groundbreaking in the grand scheme of things. I can't say I'd buy this disc (mine came free with an early adopter BD promo in '07), but I definitely recommend you viewing it if you're a fan of the director,or actors, and like this type of flick. It still stands up!』
『Seth Brundle, a brilliant but eccentric scientist attempts to woo investigative journalist Veronica Quaife by offering her a scoop on his latest research in the field of matter transportation, which against all the expectations of the scientific establishment have proved successful. Up to a point. Brundle thinks he has ironed out the last problem when he successfully transports a living creature, but when he attempts to teleport himself a fly enters one of the transmission booths, and Brundle finds he is a changed man.』
『David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners,Videodrome) country, so expectThe Flyto be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg's best films, and certainly one of the important movies of the 1980s.--Tom Keogh
