(The Horror&Tragedy Of It All)
『I had such hopes for this collection only to find them painfully dashed. The Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection films and sound quality often suffers to varying degrees from film to film. Sometimes that is true within the same film. Collection contains both well known and much lesser known films that only die-hard horror fans would recognize. Some inclusions I felt were misplaced and should have been in a sci-fi collection instead. I have yet to find captioning nor subtitles for any selections. If this is important to you and your family as it is in mine you might want to reconsider this purchase based on that alone. If I had known before hand I would not have bought this. I think it is a sad shame in today's times anyone is omitted from enjoying such a simple pleasure due to a disability and will not invest in companies that show a lack of compassion for such people. Nevertheless the kit contains: # Dr. Jekyll&Mr. Hyde starring John Barrymore, Blue Beard starring John Carradine, The Corpse Vanishes starring Bela Lugosi, Night of the Living Dead starring Judith O'Dea, Doomed to Die starring Boris Karloff, The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney, Sr., The Indestructible Man starring Lon Chaney, Jr., The Hunchback of Notre Dame Lon Chaney, Sr., Nosferatu starring Max Schreck, Swamp Women starring Mike Connors, The World Gone Mad starring Pat O'Brien, The Little Shop of Horrors starring Jack Nicholson, Tormented starring Richard Carlson, The Monster Walks starring Rex Lease, Monster from a Prehistoric Planet starring Tamio Kawaji, The Gorilla starring The Ritz Brothers, A Shriek in the Night starring Ginger Rogers, Bloodlust starring Robert Reed, The Amazing Mr. X starring Turhan Bay, Last Woman on Earth starring Robert Towne, The Bat starring Vincent Price, The House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price, The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, Dementia 13 starring William Campbell, Phantom from 10,000 Leagues starring Kent Taylor, Carnival of Souls starring Candace Hilligoss, Atom Age Vampire starring Alberto Lupo, Creature from the Haunted Sea starring Robert Towne, Nightmare Castle starring Barbara Steele, Black Dragons starring Bela Lugosi, Invisible Ghost starring Bela Lugosi, One Body Too Many starring Bela Lugosi, White Zombie starring Bela Lugosi, Attack of the Giant Leeches starring Ken Clark, The Screaming Skull starring John Hudson, Beast of Yucca Flats starring Tor Johnson, The Terror starring Boris Karloff, Revolt of the Zombies starring Dean Jagger, The Giant Gilla Monster starring Don Sullivan, The Fatal Hour starring Boris Karloff, Dead Men Walk starring George Zucco, The Mad Monster starring George Zucco, Maniac starring Bill Woods, Metropolis starring Gustav Frolich, and more.』

(Horror Classics)
『I am content with my purchase of the "Horror Classics." It took a little longer to get here than what I expected and I did not receive an email notice of when it shipped, which I kept looking for. But other than that I and my husband are content with the purchase. And the price was great.
Sincerely,
C. Fredrickson

(Worth It, But Know What You Are Getting Into)
『I bought this set for $14.99 at Best Buy. At 29 cents per movie, I figure I can afford to be disappointed by some of them. I'm very much into both horror movies and old B movies, so the fact that not all of these films are technically "horror" really didn't bother me.
These are all public domain movies- that means anyone can reproduce and sell them without worrying about copyright or paying any sort of royalties. That's how they are able to market this package so cheaply. And the title is misleading- by no means are most of these movies "classics". In fact, with a few exceptions ("Night of the Living Dead","Nosferatu" and a couple of others) they're largely fairly obscure. But that doesn't mean they're not entertaining.

As noted, the prints and audio vary wildly, from fairly decent all the way to barely watchable (some look suspiciously like VHS transfers). But if you're a stickler for picture quality, chances are you're not into watching stuff like this anyway.

So far I've really enjoyed this set; it goes great with popcorn, pizza, and beer on a Saturday night. It'd certainly rather take my chances on these films than pay $14.99 for a DVD of a single movie only to find out that it sucks, which is the case with about 75% of the stuff coming out these days.

(Great collection)
『Great to always have an old creepy horror movie to throw in. Wish it has some Frankenstein but oh well..』

(DVD Horror Classics)
『Some of the 50's Drive-in type movies are terrible, but well worth the price for the classics』
『Get an instant library of some of the greatest horror classics ever to come out of Hollywood on twelve double-sided DVDs. Never has such a comprehensive collection of great classic horror films been assembled in one exciting package, all for an amazingly low price!』

(One Of The Best)
『I saw this when it came out in 82', in a theatre in Wellington New Zealand. At the time I was 14 and had to pretend I was older as this had a R16 rating here.My father was running a shop and said to me "here's ten bucks go to the movies" as he was busy and did not want a kid under his feet all day.Why I picked this film I still have no idea , I was a big horror fan even then but the poster made no sense to me , it had a kind of flower with tenticles thing on it not the picture I have seen over the years , maybe this was a poster only released down here I don't know. There was maybe 20-25 people in the theatre at the time not a lot but I thought good the less the better as you will not have a bunch of kids screaming and yelling. From the point where the dogs head splits open I thought we have something special here and right till the end I knew this was a great film.I raved about it to my friends they all went and saw it and loved it.Was going to see it again two weeks later but it had finished its run here which disappointed me to no end.Back then the VHS market was just starting and I had to wait nearly two years for it to come out , saw it again in 85' as a double bill with Cat People and the theatre was packed at the midnight session everyone I talked too said they were not here to see Cat People but The Thing which was on second.I burnt out two VHS copies of this movie and when DVDS were invented I thought great and I can finally see it how I remember it, in widescreen. To this day I do not think there has been another movie that even comes close to this effects wise.No CGI everything was hand-made , Rob Bottin and with a little help from the late Stan Winston did a fantastic job here. The acting was great and I thought worthy of Oscars which would never happen as horror films hardly win anything.I rate this with the original Jaws as my two favourite films , this one having the edge as sometimes the shark looked a bit suspect.I am 42 now and a few years ago I told this guy who I worked with who was 18 to get this out ,he did and said to me the next day how he loved the movie and went out and brought it the next day.He then said I cannot believe I missed this at the movies , I said "What do you mean missed this came out 25 years ago", he could not believe it and said it looked like a new film which goes to show how well this film has stood over time , it really needs a hundred stars as far as I am concerned.』

(Psychological horror, sci fi, drama, all add up to a classic film)
『Back when Kurt Russell had more acting roles, it was good to see that he occupied his time by creating a partnership with John Carpenter. Never mind that this was a remake - it stands by itself for the reasons described above. The movie is perfectly paced and even though it has lighter moments, those don't last long.
It is an acting ensemble piece where there are no weak links in the casting.

The audience remains as confused as the film's characters and all the elements of the plot take time in coming together. The beginning of the film doesn't make sense until the end - however, it is not a flashback.

Some of the characters are on the verge of mental illness and the central event of the film just adds to the tension until something has to give, which it does in spectacular, violent and melancholy fashion.
In fact, one may feel deep sadness at the end of it.

The film is a bit of a downer - there are only isolated action moments. In between is human desperation, as well as repeated failure in understanding and communicating, which the viewer shares. This film may well be both John's and Kurt's masterpiece.
Very highly recommended.』

(The Thing (Collector's Edition))
『An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of the most entertaining horror movies ever made - fast, clever and purely exciting from start to finish. This is how all movies of the genre should be made. A classic that still holds up to this very day.

(Rob Bottin rules!!)
『The Thing is what it is thanks to Rob Bottin, Mike Ploog and Stan Winston's team and John Carpenter perfect direction of course. No CGI, no Stop-Motion animation, just weird mechanical effects and a lot of gore. Get the DVD if you want to see all of the bonus material [not included on Blu-ray]』

(Paranoia Will Destroy Ya)
『The Thing is a masterpiece of paranoid horror. It is a fantastic tale of violence and the depravity of man. It shows the potential that we all have for self preservation and cruelty. Many scenes are cringe worthy, and I love the way the film keeps the viewer guessing and wondering "who's next?" The ultimate self sacrifice of the characters to "save the world" is both uplifting and full of situational horror. It was fantastic film for its day. It is a fantastic film for any day.』
『A twelve man research team in the Antarctic accidentally revives an alien being that can change form to perfectly imitate its potential victims.
Genre:Horror

Media Type:DVD』

『Howard Hawks's original 1951 production ofThe Thing from Another Worldcan be glimpsed playing on a TV that fateful October evening in John Carpenter's blockbuster hit,Halloween(1978). A few years later, Carpenter reteamed with hisEscape from New Yorkstar Kurt Russell to do a remake. But while the first movie version ofThe Thingwas in atmospheric black and white, Carpenter's 1982 version is in widescreen, full color, and features some of the most revoltingly explicit, surreally imaginative special effects (courtesy of FX-meister Rob Bottin) that have ever been seen on the screen. Researchers in the remote Antarctic dig up the remains of a spacecraft that has long been frozen in the ice. But the alien life unthaws and infects the living (not only humans but sled dogs too), living and gestating inside them. (This horrific concept was also explored in the two versions ofInvasion of the Body Snatchersand theAlienmovies.) ThisThingis chilling in every sense of the word, with plenty of terrifying, adrenaline-pumping moments that build it to a powerful and shockingly nihilistic conclusion. It's a harsh and uncompromising movie (hewing more closely to the original 1930s story "Who Goes There?")--so much so that it probably never would have been given a green-light by any studio in the more cautious and doggedly upbeat 1990s.--Jim Emerson

『GREAT movie, GREAT cast, GREAT acting, GREAT soundtrack! If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly suggest you buy it. It is FANTASTIC! Just make sure you can handle gore. Christian Bale does a fantastic job!』

(Close to Perfect BR Version)
『Lions Gate pulled no punches when They Re-Released
American Psycho on the HD Format

The Transfer is FLAWLESS it "Snaps, Crackles&Pops"
They took all the extras from The Killer Collector's Edition Including putting the UNCUT NC-17 Version on BR
One minus is
The American Psycho: From Book to Screen featurette wasn't brought over from the DVD (Which sucks)
That Featurette is great and adds allot of dimensions to the Film.

The Film is in League with Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Crazies, They Live, Requiem for a Dream, District 9, Watchmen, and George Orwell's 1984 Novel
There is such a HUGE Social Commentary through out the film it's deep and insightful.
It's a Must see Dark Masterpiece
WARNING: Adults Only
If u have kids make sure they don't see it
It will Freak 'em out if they see Batman Nude with a Chainsaw going Nuts!!!!!!!
A Great Film for some BAD Nightmares!

It's A Must have Blu-Ray Disc 9.7/10』

Everyone's a friggin critic or reviewer.

BTW I hate Christian Bale---eat tuna all day F%$cker and die please DONT do any more movies』

(Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!)
『All the comments on the blu-ray transfer are correct. I rented this movie 2 years ago and was blown away by the pristine pq. Lionsgate really messed up bad with this which doesn't surprise me. This is not the first blu-ray transfer from lionsgate they destroyed. These people truly are clueless on pq. My advise to all that love this film is to try and find a used copy that was released by Universal Studios.』

(Love the movie but the Blu Ray isn't worth it)
『First off, American Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. It rocked my world the first time I saw it and I've probably seen the thing 100+ times. Mary Harron's take on Bret Easton Ellis's masterpiece is amazing, and Christian Bale brings the character of Patrick Bateman to life like none other. The brutal acts juxtaposed with Patrick's cool nonchalance is profoundly disturbing and creepy. If you haven't seen the movie, buy it at once.

As far as the Blu Ray version goes? Skip it. The intro with the white background looks absolutely horrible on Blu Ray. In fact, I put my old DVD copy in just to see the difference and I think the original upscaled DVD looks better on my PS3. There are no special features on the Blu Ray worth mentioning. Save yourself the trouble and get the DVD version instead.』

『Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancé (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the ‘80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.』
『The Bret Easton Ellis novelAmerican Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (Go Fish) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane.--Sean Axmaker

『The Frankenstien collection is the greatest movies of the Horror era. I do agree with one guy who posted that the Movie Frankenstien Meets Wolfman was not apart of this fine collection. Aside from that I recommend this collection to any true fan of Horror. These movies were well done and set the bar for future horror movies to come.

Great movies to add to your collection.』

(Movies great, but packaging????)
『Frankenstein - The Legacy Collection contains five classic and not so classic Frankenstein movies: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, and House of Frankenstein. One of my arguments is that it should have included Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. You need that movie so you can follow along the series. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man goes after Ghost of Frankenstein and before House of Frankenstein. Without that movie then there are a lot of unanswered questions. You cannot go from A to C without B. Also the packaging just focuses on Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein and the rest of the movies get nothing more then a footnote. Son of Frankenstein is the only one with out a theatrical trailer or anything extra to it. Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, and House of Frankenstein all say underneath of them bonus material; so what is the bonus material? Frankenstein - The Legacy Collection gets a B-.

Scenes

Frankenstein is one hour and eleven minutes long and was released on November 21, 1931. It is hard to figure out where the movie takes place. You have actors with both British and English accents and the sets look to be, Germany, Austria or even Prussian. Also they movie never mentions the time period and since there is no sign of a phone anywhere it makes it even harder. The only thing electrical is the lab of Dr. Frankenstein in the old tower. Boris Karloff does a great job as the Monster. From the first time the Monster makes an entrance to the death scene at the end; where a windmill house is set to fire and a wood beam falls on him. During the opening credits a ? is shown next the Monster. Only at the end of the film when the credits begin to roll is it revealed that Boris Karloff played the Monster. Karloff would play the Monster in two more films. The movie begins with a warning from actor Edward Van Sloan indicating the scariness of the movie and if you are due to fainting spells or have a weak stomach, leave now. After the warning the movie begins and the scene is at a commentary where a funeral is taking place. Dr. Frankenstein and Fritz, his loyal assistant, are hiding nearby waiting patiently for the party to leave so they can rob the grave. With the body in tow the two head back to the tower. Back at the ancestral home of Baron Von Frankenstein, Henry's fiancée Elizabeth is upset over a letter she has received from Henry. Henry's best friend, Victor Moritz, tries to help her. They both seek Henry's old mentor Doctor Waldman. Doctor Waldman tells Elizabeth and Victor about Henry's experiments and how his demand for body parts got out of control. Henry left the institute and that was the last he heard of him. Elizabeth and Victor convince Doctor Waldman to with them to visit Henry at the old watch tower. The trio arrives at the old watch tower just moments before Dr. Frankenstein is to make the greatest experiment of his life. Dr. Frankenstein escorts all three to the lab to witness his creation to come to life. When they lower lab table from the electrical storm and the Monster moves his right hand a little Dr. Frankenstein utters his famous words "It's Alive". The next day Elizabeth and Victor are back home and Henry's father thinks there is another woman but both tries to tell him that he is finishing up his experiment. The Baron does not believe it and all three head back to the watch tower. Back at the watch tower Dr. Frankenstein shows compassion for the Monster saying it is only is a few days old and have not seen light. It is during this time that movie audience is first introduced to the monster. Henry sort of acts like a father figure at first then Fritz brings in a lighted torch and the monster goes wild. Fritz, Henry, and Doctor Waldman ties up the creature and take him to the dungeon. It is there that the monster makes his first kill. Fritz takes delight in torturing the Monster where Henry just wants him left alone. One day Fritz pushes the Monster too far and the creature kills Fritz. Dr. Frankenstein and Doctor Waldman are able to subdue the Monster and come to conclusion that creature must be destroyed. During the struggle to sedate the Monster Henry is severely hurt and is sent home to recover. Doctor Waldman is about to operate on the Monster when the Monster awakes and kills Doctor Waldman; victim number two. The Monster escapes and is next seen playing with little Maria and both are tossing flowersinto the lake. When there are no more flowers, the Monster tosses Maria into the lake to see if she can float. When the Monster realizes what he has done and leaves. The father of Maria carries her lifeless body into town and tells the Burgomaster that she was murdered. The Burgomaster organizes asearch party for the murder with Henry leading one of the groups. Henry finds the Monster and the Monster renders Henry unconscious. The Monster takes Henry to the top of an abandon windmill. The villagers trap the Monster and the Monster throws out the windmill. Dr. Henry Frankenstein is taken backto his home to recover. The windmill is set to fire and the Monster is destroyed. If you are a fan of the Universal Horror\Monster movies, then this is for you. Dr. Henry Frankenstein is shown resting in bed in the final scene. Frankenstein gets an AAAAA+++++.

Bride of Frankenstein is one hour and fifteen minutes and released on April 22, 1935. This movie is half horror and half comedy. I will leave it up to the critics as to which Universal's Frankenstein movie is the best, but The Bride of Frankenstein is at least one of the funniest. The scene between the blind hermit and the Monster are laughable. When the hermit befriends the Monster, the hermit is thanking God for his new friend and one can see a tear from the Monster's eye. With The Bride of Frankenstein, the Monster has developed some new skills. He drinks, eat, smoke, even talks in this one. The Monster does not speak again until the final scenes of The Ghost of Frankenstein. After that movie, he becomes a mute in the rest of the Universal monster movies. Returning are Colin Clive as Baron Henry von Frankenstein, Dwight Frye as Karl (he was Fritz in the last movie), and Boris Karloff as The Monster. Mae Clarke plays Elizabeth von Frankenstein; taking over the role from Valerie Babette Louise. Elsa Lanchester plays Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and The Monster's Mate. In the movie credits she is only given screen as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. A ? is show next to The Monster's Mate. Just like in the original Frankenstein movie. Boris Karloff is only listed as Karloff. The Bride of Frankenstein begins on a stormy night at the home of Lord Bryon whose guests are Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley. Lord Bryon recounts the making of the Frankenstein monster and bits and pieces of the of the 1931 Frankenstein movie are seen. Then were back and the home again and Mary Shelley tells that there is more to the story and we flash to the present and pick up at the very end of the Frankenstein movie where the old windmill is completely burned and Dr. Frankenstein is taken back to his home. Henry is presumed dead until his hand start moving and wakes up. Back and the windmill the parents of little Maria are grieving of their daughter and the father does not believe the monster has died. He walks over to the windmill and falls in. The Monster comes from the shadow and kills Hans. The Monster escapes from the windmill and throws Hans's wife in the windmill to her death. Next the Monster comes across Minnie and she flees in terror. We do not know if it is later in the evening or later on in the week since the movie does not make that clear, but Dr. Septimus Pretorius comes a calling and asks to speak to Dr. Henry Frankenstein. Dr. Pretorius was Henry's mentor at the university and was kick out of there for knowing to much as Dr. Pretorius claims. Dr. Pretorius convinces Henry to come with him to his lab to show what he has been working on. He shows Henry six little people that are no bigger then four inches. The six people are: queen, king, archbishop, devil, ballerina and mermaid. Dr. Frankenstein claims that it is not science but black magic and says he won't help Dr. Pretorius. In the next scene we see the Monster at a pond healing his wounds and drinking water. There is a Sheppard girl who has fallen in the lake and the Monster rescue hers. When she wakes she begins to scream in fright and there are some hunters there and shoot at the Monster. The creature flees in pain. The hunters warn the Burgomaster and the Burgomaster sends a mob out to hunt the monster down. He is caught, brought to jail, chained down, and when the guard leaves, the Monster frees himself and escapes. He makes his way to the home of a blind hermit and the hermit befriends the Monster. The hermit (his name never given in the movie) gives the Monster soup and bread and finally rest. When the Monster is lying on the bed, the hermit says a prayer and at that point the Monster weeps. We are to assume it is sometime later in the week because the hermit has taught the Monster who to speak. He can say words like bread, drink, smoke, good, and wood. Later on some hunters walk in and recognize the Monster and begin to shoot. During the struggle a broom is knocked into the fire and the cottage sets on fire. The two hunters escort the hermit out and the Monster is left without a friend. Later that evening the Monster is in a cemetery being chases by villagers. The Monster knocks over a figure and takes shelter in the crypt. Dr. Pretorius is in the crypt also but in a different location. He is there with two grave robbers stealing bones of a female corpse. This is the only scene where we can get any indication of what time period the movie is in. Karl is told to read the date on the coffin and it is revealed she died in 1899. In the crypt Dr. Pretorius pay the robbers and those two leave. Dr. Pretorius stays behind to have bread, smoke, and drink. The Monster walks in on Dr. Pretorius and the two have a talk. Dr. Pretorius becomes the Monster new friend. At the home of Henry and Elizabeth Frankenstein, Dr. Pretorius comes a calling and once Elizabeth leaves the room Dr. Pretorius try to convince Henry to join him in his final experiment. Henry at first refuses Dr. Pretorius request. Dr. Pretorius then shows the Monster to Henry says that there has been some improvement on the creature like his speech. The Monster is now the master and Dr. Frankenstein is now the servant. The Monster orders Dr. Frankenstein to make his mate. Dr. Frankenstein will do nothing until the Monster leaves the room. When Dr. Pretorius is about to close the door, he tells the Monster now. That is the signal to kidnap Elizabeth and when Henry cannot find her, he agree to assist Dr. Pretorius to create the Monster's mate. The operation goes on schedule and when the Mate is fully clothed and sees her future husband rejects him. Realizing that he will never have a friend decides to blow up the old watch tower but Dr. Frankenstein and Elizabeth are allow to live and flee the tower. What ever became of Dr. Pretorius and the Monster's mate remained unclear. It is assumed that they did not survive the explosion. This is a great movie to own and watch. Son of Frankenstein

Son of Frankenstein is the longest Universal monster\horror film. It is one hour and thirty-nine minutes long and was released on January 13, 1939. This would also be the last time Boris Karloff would portray the Monster. Lon Chaney, Jr. would take over the role in the Ghost of Frankenstein. In this movie the suit that the Monster wore in Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein is gone. The Monster is now wearing a fur vest and tall boots. One must assume that the clothes he was wearing in the Bride of Frankenstein were destroyed when the building blew up. Also gone is his ability to speak as well. The viewer has to assume he lost that also when he blew himself up in the last movie. Also on a side note, there is only one clamp on his head. In the Bride of Frankenstein the Monster has several clamps on his head. The Monster does seem to have evolved in this movie. He can walk better and there is more thought in the Monster killing. In the Son of Frankenstein, we are introduced to Ygor for the first time, played by Béla Lugosi. The Son of Frankenstein takes thirty years into the future from the ending of the Bride of Frankenstein; at least we are to assume that. Baron Wolf von Frankenstein looks to be in his thirties. Basil Rathbone was 43 years old when the picture was made. In this picture you have a mixtureof English and American actors and one Austria-Hungarian actor. The movie starts off with the arrival of Baron Wolf von Frankenstein and his family to the town of Frankenstein to reclaim his family ancestral home. It is hinted that he has been living in the United States for some years. The townspeople and Burgomaster and his Burghers are there to meet him and not to greet him. They hand over two boxes to Wolf; the big box contains the journal and notes his father's experiments and the smaller box holds the key to unlock the bigger box. Shortly after Wolf, Elsa, and Peter arrive at the castle, Inspector Krogh makes a complimentary greeting. He let them know his services are at there disposal. It is the next day and Wolf goes for a walk in the garden and comes across the old ruins where the monster was made. In the Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein the monster was created and died at an abandoned watch tower away from the castle; miles away we are to presume. Ygor meets Dr. Frankenstein and shows him a secret that been hidden for year. He takes him to the crypts of his father and grandfather and show the Monster at the end and between the two crypts lying in a comatose state.Ygor explains that the Monster was out hunting food and lighting struck him and he walks no more. During the conversation between the two of them Wolf says something along the line, "do you mean to imply that it is my brother." Dr. Frankenstein agrees to make the Monster well again. Dr. Frankenstein refurbishes the old ruins and turns it into a lab just like his father before him. Unlike the first time when lightning was used to bring the Monster to life, Wolf uses a generator and electrodes to bring the Monster back to life. When the Monster does not wake up from his coma, Dr. Frankenstein believes he has failed. He heads back to the castle disappointed. Later on we find out the Monster is alive and doing Ygor's bidding. It is not mention in the movie nor is it explained how the two met and how does Ygor have control over him. Later on Wolf finds out the Monster is alive a rushes backto the lab. He discovers the monster is gone and starts gathering some instruments in the lab. While Wolf if doing that, the Monster climbs up from the lave pits and makes presents himself to Wolf. Wolf turns around and is startled. The monster touches Wolf and finds some resemblance between Henry Frankenstein and Wolf. The Monster sees himself in a mirror and realizes that he is alive and to a point is upset to still be living. He grabs Wolf and brings him into the mirror and realizes it is not his creator. Wolf tells Ygor that he must remain in the lab if he wants to keep the Monster well. Later that evening Ygor gets the Monster to kill the final Burgher who hanged him several years ago. The villagers are outraged that there have been two killings since Baron Wolf von Frankenstein and plan to storm the castle. Inspector Krogh puts guards in front of the castle to protect the Baron andBaroness. Baron Frankenstein is upset that he is a prisoner in his own castle. Baron Frankenstein tells Inspector Krogh that he is going to kick Ygor off the property. When Wolf does find Ygor, Ygor comes after him with a hammer and Wolf shoots three times and kills Ygor. When the Monster finds Ygor lifeless body, he first shows sympathy that his friend has died and then decides to kill Peter, Wolf's son. He finds Peter and brings him back to the lab. Back at the castle Elsa von Frankenstein rushes in and says Peter is missing. Both Wolf and Inspector Krogh go in different directions to findPeter. Inspector Krogh finds Peter and the Monster first and Inspector Krogh shoots at the Monster. The Monster rips off Inspector Krogh artificial arm and seems surprise that it is not a real arm. Just then Wolf swing from a chain from the top of the lab and knocks the Monster into the lava pits killing the Monster and Peter is saved. At the end of the movie Wolf turns over the estate to the town of Frankenstein and telling the people to do what they please and Wolf, Elsa, and Peter board the train and leave the town never to come back. Just like the first two movies this is an excellent movie. A must for any Universal monster\horror fans. Son of Frankenstein gets an AAAAA+++++.

Theatrical Trailer

The Ghost of Frankenstein is one hour and 7 minutes long and was released on March 13, 1942. This would be Lon Chaney, Jr. only portrayal of the Monster. The film picks up years after the Monster is supposed to have died in the sulfuric pits. Instead his body has been in a coma like tomb. Ygor who we assumed was shot to death in the last picture is alive. The villagers at the town hall say that there is a curse on the town and it s the curse of Frankenstein. The villager's wants to blow up the castle and the Mayor thinks this is all non-sense, but does not want to be ousted in the next election. The Mayor gives and let the villagers blow up the castle. Later that evening the villagers head to the castle to blow it up, but Ygor puts up a losing fight to defend the castle. Ygor escapes through the catacombs and during one of the explosions some of sulfur falls off the Monster. Ygor removes the rest of the sulfur off the Monster and the two makes their escapes before the villages finally do them in. During a thunderstorm the Monster is struck by lightning and becomes strong again. In the last movie it made him and left him in a comatose state. The two head off to Wolf's brother, Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein so he can make the Monster better. The two are in the town of Vasaria and Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein lives in a chateau at the end of town. Before the two can head over there, the Monster wonders off and befriends a little girl named Cloestine. A bunch of bad boys have knocked her ball on a roof. Cloestine asks the Monster if he can retrieve her ball. (In Frankenstein and the Ghost of Frankenstein, little girls are not afraid on the Monster.) The Monster picks up Cloestine and heads up to get her ball. Why on his quest a couple of the town villagers try to take the Monster down and are killed. The Monster retrieves the ball and escorts Cloestine off the roof. He hands the little girl over to her father and the police arrest him. Erik Ernst, the town prosecutor, seeks out Dr. Frankenstein and asks him to come to the police station to examine the Monster. Dr. Frankenstein agrees to do so after he has finished some work. After Erik leaves, Ygor visits Dr. Frankenstein and blackmail the doctor into making him well. Ygor tells Dr. Frankenstein that he would expose the family heritage to the village Dr. Frankenstein reluctantly agrees to do so. At the police station, the Monster is being interrogated by the prosecutor and Ludwig makes his entrance. The Monster seems to recognize the doctor, but when Ludwig denies knowing the Monster, the Monster goes into a fit of rage. It is only through Ygor's music that the Monster calms down and escapes from the station. The two flee the village and later that evening heads to the doctor's chateau. Once there the Monster gets angry and accidently kills Dr. Kettering. Dr. Frankenstein and his daughter Elsa her some noise and hurry to the lab. The Monster captures Elsa and Dr. Frankenstein heads to another room and turns on some form of knock out gas on The Monster, Elsa, and Ygor. When everybody awakes, Elsa is in her bed, Ygor is now a prisoner, and the Monster is strapped to a lab table. The Monster is able to free himself from the straps, but before he can get completely loose Dr. Frankenstein is able to sedate the Monster. It is in the lab that Dr. Frankenstein decides the only way to kill the Monster is through dissection; take him apart piece by piece. Dr. Frankenstein asks for Dr. Theodore Bohmer assistant, but Dr. Bohmer will not do it. Later in the movie just as Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein is about to do the operation, the spirit of Dr. Henry Frankenstein appears. He tells them the Monster has a brain of a criminal but if good brain was but in there then the name of Frankenstein is restored. This convinces Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein to use the brain of Dr. Kettering. This time Dr. Bohmer agrees to help Dr. Frankenstein because it is not murder. Ygor wants nothing to do with it because the Monster will longer be his friend. The tell Ygor it is a new brain or he will dissect the Monster. Ygor reluctantly agrees to the operation. Ygor tells the Monster he is getting a new brain and he will be better. Between then and the operation the Monster leaves the chateau and head to the home of Cloestine Hussman. How the Monster escaped and how he knew with Cloestine lives the movie did not explain. The Monsters hears Ygor music and at first ignores it. The Monster kidnaps Cloestine and grabs her ball. In grabbing the ball he unknowingly knocks over a lantern and a fire begins. The Monster is back at the chateau Ygor tries to convince the Monster to let her go, but the Monster pushes Ygor and nearly crushes Ygor to death. In Ludwig study the Monster brings the girl to Dr. Frankenstein indicating he wants her brain in his head. Dr. Frankenstein is able to free Cloestine and gives the girl to Elsa. Dr. Frankenstein lures the Monster back to the lab. Early on Ygor had convinced Dr. Bohmer to put Ygor's brain into the Monster. When the procedure begins Dr. Bohmer removes Ygor's brain and presents it to Dr. Frankenstein believing it to be Dr. Kettering's brain. At then end of the operation the Monster face is wrapped in bandages. Back at the village and two weeks later the villagers are wondering what ever happen to Ygor and the Monster. They believe that Dr. Frankenstein is hiding the Monster. One of the policemen alerts Erik and he gets on his horse and rides over there. Erik convinces the villagers not to do anything until he has had a chance to talk to Dr. Frankenstein. Once inside the home he tells Dr. Frankenstein that his safety is in jeopardy and at that time Dr. Frankenstein takes him to the dungeon room to show what he has done. Once there Dr. Frankenstein starts talking and asking the Monster do you know who I am. The Monster speaks back in Ygor voice and Dr. Frankenstein is startled and shock by this. Ygor tells Dr. Frankenstein that he convinced Dr. Bohmer to put Ygor's brain into the Monster and now he has the strength of a hundred men. Erik escapes and locks the door as he leaves. Ygor breaks open the door and along with Dr. Bohmer and Dr. Frankenstein heads into the lab to gas the villagers. Dr. Frankenstein tries to stop them but is shoved aside. It is that moment that Ygor realizes that he is blind. Dr. Frankenstein tells Ygor that he has Dr. Kettering' blood in him and that his brain and Dr. Kettering's blood are not compatible and won't feed the senses. Ygor outraged by this kills Dr. Bohmer and start tearing the lab apart. In do this he sets the lab on fire and quickly the chateau catches fire. How Ygor got from the lab to the study the movie does not indicate, but Ygor is in the study when a beam falls on him and meet his end. During the fire scene of the movie, you can see the facial make-up melting off Lon Chaney, Jr. face. In Son of Frankenstein, the Monster and Ygor are portrayed as best buddies. In The Ghost of Frankenstein their relationship seems to come apart as the Monster no longer responds to Ygor control over him. The Monster is back in his old clothes like the original Frankenstein movie. One must assume the sulfur burns his old clothes and the sulfur cost him his eyesight as well. During the whole filming his eyes are not wide open. The movie loses itself after forty minutes and also is gone is the magic as well. The movie would mark the last time the Monster appears as a solo. Starting with Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, he must share movie with his fellow horror monsters. Ghost of Frankenstein movie gets a B- from me.

House of Frankenstein is one hour and eleven minute long and was released on December 1, 1944. The movie begins inside Neustadt prison cell where Dr. Gustav Niemann is serving a sentence for digging up bodies and performing unorthodox experiments. The movie does not indicate how long he is in there for. One evening the is a terrific storm and a clap of thunder or two knocks out a wall and ceialing and Dr. Niemann and Daniel make their escape. The two take refuge in a traveling horror exhibit show and kill Professor Bruno Lampini and his driver. The two head to the town of Reigelberg where Bürgermeister Hussman lives. Hussman is one of three men that sent him away fifteen years ago. The two arrive at the town and set up the Horror Show. There they are met by Bürgermeister Hussman, Rita Hussman, Karl Hussman, and Inspector Arnz. Bürgermeister Hussman seems to recognize Dr. Niemann but is not sure of himself. During a fit of anger Dr. Niemann pulls the stake out of the dead body of Count Dracula and unintentionly brings him back to life. Dr. Niemann and Dracula strike a deal with one anonther and later that evening Dracula kills Bürgermeister Hussman and tries to take Rita Hussman as his bride with him. This is foiled when during the chase Dr. Niemann throws out Count Dracula's coffin and before he has a chance to get back into the coffin dies when the sun. Poor fellow, he should have use a suntan lotion 15 or better. Dr. Niemann and Daniel make there way to the Villageof Frankenstein. At the village the encounter a band of gypsies putting on a show. After the show is over they witness Ilonka getting whipped by her boss. Daniel rescues Ilonka rescues and Dr. Niemann allow her to come along. Later that evening they arrive at the ruins of the Frankenstein castle andlooks for the records of the late Dr. Frankenstein. While looking Daniel fall through some loose grounds and Dr. Niemann goes to help Daniel. It is there that they discover the ice frozen bodies of the Frankenstein monster and the Wolf Man. The two begin thawing the bodies and when Larry awakens heasks why he did so. Dr. Niemann tells Larry if he can help find the records of Dr. Frankenstein, he would cure him. Larry agrees to do so and finds the records. The five of them make there way to the home of Dr. Niemann in Vasaria. The four of them begin to get the lab working again so Dr. Niemannget to work right away. Later on Dr. Niemann and Daniel head into the village in the evening and capture Ullman and Strauss; the other two men who sent Dr. Niemann to prison. Dr. Nieman tells the two: "I'm going to repay you for betraying me; I'm going to give that brain of yours a new home in the skull of the Frankenstein monster. As for you Strauss, I'm going to give you the brain of the wolfman so that all your waking hours will be spent in untold agony awaiting the full of the moon.. which will change you into a werewolf." Copy and pasted from TCM.com website. The surgery is only half successful. Gone is Ygor and inside the Monster is Ullman's brain. When it is Larry's turn to be operated on it is too late. Larry has turn into a werewolf and is on the kill. Ilonka who found out from Daniel that Larry is a werewolf is out to kill him with silver bullet. It winds up being a double murder. The werewolf has attacked Ilonka and during the struggle Ilonka fires the silver bullet. The way the werewolf is holding his hands over his stomach and not his heart, gives some indication that Ilonka missed the main target and lived again in The House of Dracula movie. Daniel see Ilonka lifeless body and brings to Dr. Niemann and Dr. Niemann tells Daniel it is too late. Daniel is upset and attacks Dr. Niemann. The Monster sees this and attacks Daniel and throws him out of the window and kills him. Just then the villagers who were looking for the werewolf enter the castle. The Monster takes Dr. Niemann and flees to the marsh. The villagers follow and set fire to the marsh. The Monster and Dr. Niemann meet their end when they are trapped in quicksand and drown. The script is poorly written. Since this was a continuation of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man; a lot of stuff seems out ofplace. First the town of where the Wolf Man and the Monster is destroyed is Vasaria. Yet in this film the have them shown having been destroyed in the Village of Frankenstein. Second, in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man the records were destroyed; yet they seemed to have made miraculous recovery. InHouse of Frankenstein John Carradine plays Dracula a. k. a. Baron Latos. No offense to John Carradine, but the movie could have done with out his part. Even some of the subplots and the gypsy girl stuff seem lame. If you just want this movie to round out your classic Universal Horror\Monster collection, see if you can rent from a friend or buy it on eBay. House of Frankenstein gets a C-.』

『First of all, you can't beat the price, but if you're a stickler for quality videos (some of these aren't so good), then you might want to purchase these films separately. Some are quite action-packed and take you back to a more innocent time, when drive-in movies were all over the country. (There were once more than 3000, now there are les than 300).

A lot of memories (my teenage kids crack up at some of the slang used "back then"), but a pretty good amount of bang for your buck--especially if you like camp and over-the-top acting. You also get a chance to see some famous actors of today in their embryonic stage of acting.

There is some nudity. "Bee Girls" in itself is a hoot and a half, as is "Jive Turkey."』

(3 Film Title DIFFERENCES in my Movie Pack)
『This is another one of those bargain price Mill Creek Entertainment mega packs of public domain or cheaply-licensed films (largely B or C grade). Still, this set is well worth the price you pay if you like film variety or crave light horror/thrillers and/or exploitation flicks.

Something about this movie pack of particular importance to archivists and collectors is the fact that if you buy this set, the 50 Chilling Classics set, and the MASSIVE 250 flick HORROR COLLECTION --- you will have nearly 350 different films (whereas all other traditional horror movie packs are almost entirely duplicated inside the 250 pack!).

I would like to point out that in my Drive-In Classics set, I had 3 film differences from those in Amazon's list. I have a feeling that Mill Creek occasionally alters their sets if/when they get copyright notices or if they lose licensing rights, or perhaps the Amazon list has always been wrong...

Each of 12 disks is double-sided and usually features 2 films a side but a few have 3 films per side. That said, 3 different disks in my set contained different films than listed on Amazon:
3 FILMS I DID NOT RECEIVE:
*Mama Dracula
*Creepers (PLURAL, it's apparently an alternate name for a Dario Argento film)
*Death by Dialogue

3 Non-Amazon-Listed films I RECEIVED INSTEAD (these films ARE listed on my DVD case and the disk sleeves):
*Blood Mania
*The Devil's Hand
*Single Room Furnished

I was really looking forward to seeing that film about Drac's mama, but who knows, maybe one of the 3 other films I got will turn out to be an unknown gem? :) Anyone buying this DVD set after me (Nov 2009) should probably expect to get the same films that I received.

One final oddity: Being a stickler for details, I decided to compare the movie titles on the case which matched those on the 12 DVD sleeves against those found PRINTED ON THE DVDs THEMSELVES (in center ring) and I discovered the DVDs themselves had SIX ERRORS (the sleeves&case had the correct films). The six films incorrectly printed on the disk center rings were spread across six of the twelve disks! Here they are:
6 FILM TITLES PRINTED ON MY DISKS BUT NOT ACTUALLY PRESENT:
*Disk1 B2: Deadly Encounter (actually Creeper)
*Disk5 A1: Fatal Error (actually Snowbeast)
*Disk7 A2: Patrick (actually Shock)
*Disk9 B1: Boogey Man (actually Night Train to Terror)
*Disk10 A1: Cockfighter (actually Don't Look in the Basement)
*Disk11 A1: Why Shoot the Teacher (actually The Island Monster)

What does all this mean? Beats me.
Maybe those films are coming soon in a future iteration? Or they were on a past iteration? Or the DVD press somehow screwed up on 50% of the disks? Hmmmmmmmm. Who cares? Just pop the popcorn, get liquored up, and enjoy these cheap crappy flicks.』

(Great Claiss 80's Horror movie)
『The Lost Boys a great Classic Horror movie with a bit of comedy thrown in. One of my favorite 2nd vampire movies of all times only SubSpecies is Number 1 on my own personnal list of top Vampire movies.

Great movie, classic songs, classic comedy, Great Acting and a Great Evil vampire (David) Kiefer Sutherland. the 2 Corey's are good in this movie and have some of the best one-liners in the movie.

if you like Vampire movies I recommend seeing this movie and add it to your collection.』

(The Lost Boys- My Favriote Vampire Flick of the 80's)
『The Lost Boys Is an awesome movie, that is perfect for the 80's

Plot- a mother and her two children to santa carla, a place in california that is proclamed by two local boys that the town is inhabited by vampires and are after one of the mothers children named michael!

Acting- solid acting, plus great music score

Gore- an exploded head, a ripped throat, a bloody skull bite and some impalements

Bottom Line- 5 out of 5

Rated R/ Time 97min/ 1987/ Color

(Skip this lazy re-issue of the 1998 version)
『Buyer beware! This is a copy of the 1998 edition if the film. The 2004 Special Edition was given a superior transfer with loads of extras. Since this was issued in 2007, one could assume that this is a single disc version of the 2004 release. However, this is the original transfer with the bare-bones presentation of the original DVD. Spend a few dollars more on the Special Edition DVD or the Blu-Ray.』

(BLU RAY VERSION)
『BLU-RAY VERSION IS WORTH BUYING. I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE MOVIE, OTHERS ALREADY HAVE. BUT, NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE TELL YOU IF IT IS WORTH UPGRADING FROM YOUR REGULAR DVD TO BLU-RAY. THIS ONE IS WORTH IT. COLORS ARE STUNNING AND SOUNDS GREAT.』

(Better than Twilight!)
『Sorry Twilight fans! Twilight was a good movie but this is the ulitmate vampire movie! If you are looking for a vampire movie that has action and is about vampires and not just a chick flick of vampires falling in love -this is the movie for you! I have seen every vampire movie out there and this beats them all! The storyline, the action, and actors/actresses was just awesome! This a movie I can watch over and over and not get sick of it. If you haven't watched it-Watch It! you won't regret it!』
『Strange events threaten an entire family when two brothers move with their divorced mother to a California town where the local teenage gang turns out to be a pack of vampires. Director: Joel Schumacher Actors: Jason Patric, Keifer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Diane Wiest, Jami Gertz』
『This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. InStand by Mehe played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bullyvampirewho leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay.--Jeff Shannon

(Queen of the Damned)
『Lestat has slumbered for two ceturies, but the world above his tomb has changed from the colonial pretension of the 18th century to a more free and colourful world of new more revealing fashions, louder music, caring for the world's future and the hungry machine that is the media. I love this movie. Stuart is hot in this movie. The movie manages to deliver a surreal atmosphere charged with vampire like sensuality. A vampire love story.

(Bruce Campbell, a boomstick and a chainsaw.... Need I say more?)
『By most standards this final entry into the Evil Dead Triology is the lowest. But you can't overlook the films hilarious moments. Come on, who doesn't love Bruce Campbell's Slapstick mayhem, even if Sam Raimi is filming his torment for our pleasure.

I love this film as campy as it is, even if some of the versions of the film aren't their best looking. The plot may not make sense and the slapstick mayhem may wear on people's nerves, but it's the final battle sequence that makes the film for me.
Chock full of Sam Raimi's inventive camerawork, the gadget-building montages will make any gearhead sit up in wonder. I especially love that steam-powered truck near the end, with the big propeller blade on the front mowing through an army of rubber skeletons. Yeah, it's on my wishlist for next Christmas along with the Dead Reckoning, lol.

Even when Bruce Campbell is fighting against his evil-possesed self, the one-liners like "I'll spoil those good looks" since evil version is ugly as sin and "Backstabber!" when the Evil Ash tears the sword from his back keep coming.

The special effects are relatively tame and dated compared to today's CG blockbusters. Fans of classics like "Clash of the Titans" and "Jason and Argonauts" (this one included:))will enjoy the stop-motion skeleton battle a la Ray Harryhausen. Even so the newly-budding KNB (Kurtzman, Nicotero, and Berger) effects group, responsible for the masterful effects of "Chronicles of Narnia"," The Mist" and the zombies of "Land of the Dead" among many other films, shows their incredible standard of cartoony yet horrifically real monsters.

In all, I recommend this film for any fan of Evil Dead or Bruce Campbell. It's definitely worth it.』

(A tribute to the Sinbad movies)
『4 of 5 stars for the ah ah sci-fi? action? fantasy movie Army of Darkness. I first looked at the cover art and read the liner notes and thought "here we go with a real-B movie, sigh". I started watching and it was funny and interesting. Watching the Blu-Ray I was really impressed with the image quality--super sharp and clear, it looked almost like video rather than film. So early-on, I'm thinking this is a spoof movie, but no, it was a straight fantasy/comedy movie. Then it hit me! This is a tribute to the Ray Harryhousen movie (Sinbad). Then I noticed this movie has everything from stop-action creatures, alot of rubber suits and alot of real models of creatures. Yeah, some CG, but not much. It really has the look and feel of the old Sinbad movies.

The plot is of a "S-mart" sales guy getting transported to the 1300's to fight against Deadites and recover an artifact book. Bruce Campbell did an outstanding job in the lead role. This movie was a pleasure to watch. Stupid comedy in places, old-style effects, silly quest and it is all fun fun fun! This is on my watch-it-again list.』

(army of darkness best quality)
『this dvd was in immaculate condition. no scratches, dirt or tears..it looked liked i bought it from the store brand new. thank you.』

(A Good Quality Transfer... But Lacking Special Features (HD/DVD Combo))
『Halloween got me in the mood for Army of Darkness, so shortly after I bought this one off Amazon.

I don't own a HD DVD player, so this is a review of the DVD side. In fact, this combo format version was cheaper than the regular DVD version (go figure).

Under "Customer Images" on this page, there are some images that compare the DVD side of this release to the Anchor Bay release (Army of Darkness)

The images supplied are helpful because they address 2 things:

1) The video on the Universal release (HD/DVD Combo) does have more in frame on the left/right sides of the screen, but a little bit is cropped on the top and bottom (in comparison to the Anchor Bay release)

2) As the images show, the colors on the Universal release are a bit brighter. On the Anchor Bay DVD, the colors are much cooler. The comparison pictures are a little exaggerated in my opinion though, I think Universal did a very good job with it. The daylight scenes are crisp and vibrant, and the night shots capture the original "cool" colors very well too.

If you're looking for a good DVD version of AOD, this is one of the best. If you want special features however, this is not the right DVD for you.』

『All primitive screwheads, listen up! Cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) reunites with director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man) to battle the deadly forces of evil in Army of Darkness - the outrageous, effects-fueled action epic that will make you scream with fear and laughter. Forced to lead a makeshift Dark Ages army against the demonic Deadites, who possess all the deadly magic of hell, the shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed, reluctant 20th century time traveler Ash (Campbell) must save the living from the dead, rescue his medieval girlfriend and get back to his own time. One of the most popular horror comedies of all time, now digitally remastered and loaded with bonus features, Army of Darkness Screwhead Edition is drop-dead fun!』
『A movie that only true horror buffs could love,Army of Darknessis officially part 3 in the wild and wackyEvil Deadtrilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV seriesHercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first twoEvil Deadflicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classicJason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutesArmy of Darknessnearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead.--Jeff Shannon

(only good 30 minutes)
『In the first thirty minutes the director really scares the viewers with a strange gypsy woman tormentinh a bank employee who denied her a loan. The viewers sense a kind of frightful atmosphere, the horror is based mainly in sounds in order to make you jump ou of your feet, and...that is all...After a scary scene in the garage parking, it looks like another person took the direction and the films becomes awkwardly ridiculous. If you want to scare, give credibility and seriousness to the plot.It worked this way with The Exorcist, The others, The Sixth Sense. Sam Raimi (or the producers) just spoiled a good idea.』

(Drag Me to Hell Review)
『DRAG ME TO HELL

STARRING: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Dileep Rao, David Paymer, Adriana Barraza, Chelcie Ross and Reggie Lee

WRITTEN BY: Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi

DIRECTED BY: Sam Raimi

Rated: PG-13
Genre: Horror
Release Date: 29 May 2009

If the name Sam Raimi doesn't spell it out for you, then surely the title of the film will: Drag Me to Hell is exactly what you would expect it to be, folks.

The iconic director and writer of the Evil Dead trilogy (Raimi), returns to his beloved roots of the horror genre once again. Don't let its puny PG-13 rating turn you away; the film packs a punch that only true horror fans can take. If that is not enough for you, the DVD offers an alternate extended and unrated director's cut of the film.

Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown. At first Christine seems to have everything going for her; a great job at the bank; a very sweet and understanding boyfriend; but then things start to go sour.

She overhears her boyfriend Clay (Justin Long) on the phone with his mother who is convinced that Christine may not be the right girl for him; regardless of the fact she has yet to meet Christine. Clay tries to defend her but in the end Christine fears that a part of him may wonder if his mother is right.

On top of that, she is very interested in a possible promotion at work but discovers she is evidently competing for the position with her new annoying co-worker, Stu (Reggie Lee).

There are some very well written scenes that we can all relate to in reference to working with irritating people. She and Stu are both doing their best to look good in front of their boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer) and when Christine agrees to pick him up a sub, Stu throws his order at her as well. He asks for his sandwich a certain way and when she returns with it, in front of Mr. Jacks, he tells her she got it wrong. We know that she didn't and she knows she didn't but Stu makes her look incompetent in front of Mr. Jacks. When Christine tries to defend herself with a mild argument, Stu makes a face and just tells her not to worry about it. It's a small and simple scene, but it was put together very well and leaves you wanting to punch Stu in the face.

When Christine asks Mr. Jacks about the promotion, he tells her that he is considering Stu because he can "make the tough decisions." He agrees to keep her in mind though, so she puts forth an effort to do her very best.

Then we meet Mrs. Gamush (Lorna Raver); what a hideous old woman indeed. She has disgusting false teeth that she likes to take out of her mouth and play with and absurdly gross fingernails in need of some immediate attention. You wouldn't even recognize her without the outstanding makeup they caked on her face.

Mrs. Gamush has defaulted on her mortgage loan twice. She is requesting a third extension. This is a big decision for Christine, so she takes it to Mr. Jacks.

He looks it over and simply tells her, "It's a tough decision... your call." Now the burden is on Christine's shoulders. She would hate to do this anyone; let alone this old woman, but she desperately needs that promotion.

She does all she can to try and help the old woman come up with a few different ideas to solve the problem, but none of them seem to work. Finally, she just tells her that the extension is out of the question; not a good idea.

Mrs. Gamush freaks out on her and causes a huge scene. She is not pleased, to say the least, and tells Christine in a ghastly, evil voice, "You shame me!" before she is escorted from the premises by security.

There's an awesome showdown sequence between the two gals, when Christine finds Mrs. Gamush waiting for her in the car garage. You get all of the classic slapstick and action-driven, detailed cinematography we got from Raimi's Spider-Man franchise and his Evil Dead movies. There are some very grotesque things that take place in the garage and throughout other parts of the film that are very appealing to a genuine horror fan; "Carnage Candy", if you will. At one point in their hellacious battle, the old woman places a curse on Christine.

Christine manages to escape and things start to get really messed up from there. She takes on some concern when she starts having disturbing visions and visits from hellish beings.

She consoles with Clay about it, but she can tell that only pushes them even farther apart. So what ever is she to do? Why, seek spiritual council of course.

Christine drags (no pun intended) Clay along to a psychic who informs her that a curse has in fact been placed upon her. She will be tormented by an evil spirit for three days before being drug off to burn in hell for all eternity.

I know the premise is a little over the top and if you've seen the film then you know that it's a tad ridiculous at times as well; but it's a fun movie. You laugh a lot, you're creeped out a great deal and you are constantly on the verge of losing your lunch; all essential elements in any great horror film.

Watching the film, it looks as though Sam Raimi literally did drag Alison Lohman to hell. He tortures this poor actress relentlessly. While she will no doubt receive zero remorse from Bruce Campbell (who was tormented by Raimi in all of the Evil Dead movies); she will certainly get it from me for what she's gone through here. She has the vilest things thrown on her face, inserted in her mouth, and clinging to her hair.

Everyone in the film plays their part well and you enjoy seeing the characters interact with each other. They are all a little off, and I think that's the point and also what makes it work so well; because the movie is out there, to say the least. Raimi's movies are a different breed all together and I really enjoy his twisted sense of humor.

What else is great about Sam Raimi's films (in addition to the fact that most of them have the legendary Bruce Campbell in them) is that he never limits himself to a single genre like so many directors do. He has some of the greatest and disgusting horrific comedies like Army of Darkness under his belt; he's made sensational thrillers like A Simple Plan and The Gift; he did the huge blockbuster Spider-Man movies; other action flicks like Dark Man and The Quick and the Dead and he even directed the dramatic baseball film For Love of the Game. Pretty much the only thing he hasn't done is a stop-animated musical with zombies; maybe that's next.』

『People. Your illustrious Seer was finishing a beefsteak sandwich at Pistol Pete's Automat Submachine Shop, when I spied The First Infidelity Bank across the street. This immediately triggered one of the many misaligned brain synapses in my mind and I knew what I had to do. Yes. I had to report to all of you about "Drag Me to Hell". Now, mind you, as you know, your Metamorpho is into enlightenment and the progress of the human race. So taking on this subject matter is most difficult for a loving soul. However, I will because I am selfless and sacrificing my stability to do it - all for YOU. Besides, it may help me towards my personal goal towards being the very last ranked reviewer on Amazon. Who wants to be first when being last is so much more obtainable? That Metamorpho, always using deadly logic to prove his point.

I do not profess to be a horror genre expert. No. So let's get that out of the way first. I am sure that a lot of people here have seen many, many horror flicks and are better versed at advising you. Me? The extent of my experience has been "Abbott and Costello Meet the Wolfman". That's better than a novice now, isn't it? No? Nevermind. Let's move on. Forget I mentioned it. :(

Anyway, "Drag Me to Hell", I think, is a most enjoyable ride. That is, if you view it with a certain suspension of belief. Which, I am sure most of you have these days with the Government and all. I won't get too involved in the plot, since so many reviews have already spoiled it for you. However, I will tell you that this movie involves the characters of a gypsy woman and a demon. Since I have dealt with both over time, let me assure you that they are no picnic. I had to use ALL my powers to ward them off. But I survived. Barely. But, I will say that. yes, their powers really do exist. So put that Ouija Board away! Do it now!

Alison Lohman, who used to be fat, is now a Bank Representative who is being considered for a promotion. There is also a mediocre, brown nosing new hired slug also vying for the position. It is the competitive spirit that gets Alison in a lot of hot water, very gravely I might add. When she refuses a gypsy woman (Lorna Raver- who is excellent in the part) an extension on her loan, is when hell breaks loose. Literally. By the way, if anyone has any idea how false teeth can rot, please write me.

Anyway, the action revolves around a curse, how to remove the curse, and how the curse comes to dinner but overstays it's welcome. Sam Raimi (the director and writer) fills the screen with a lot of interesting facets. An example is half dream/half real episodes that infiltrate Alison's world. The lone fly meanders throughout the whole movie. An ominous symbol for sure. But the demon, it seems, can infiltrate her night, as well as day, dreams. Not only that, but I wondered how so much hair got pulled out of Alison's head and she still had no sign of it. Even at the end.

I must say, all the actors did their parts well. Justin Long as her love interest was a splendid unhelpful non-entity as well as his parents being the typical upper class snobs. Kudos to Dileep Rao as the spiritual advisor. The open look, the manner, the clothes, all fit together. Besides, see how quick he asked for money upfront? You would never find your Metamorpho doing that. But, it would be a nice gesture to offer me something for my timely advice!

Some of the special effects work and are worth watching. Others, though, aren't as good but, who cares? No one cared when Godzilla was a fake balloon. You were too involved in the story line. Admit it! In the long road, the underlying message in all this is worth noting. It's a morality tale in the final analysis. Alison had a decision to make just as we all do in life. Are you going to make a decision that your heart knows is right? Or, are you going to give in to the expectations of others? The choice was hers to make. And, you must accept what you do for there are consequences to everything. This is an interesting tale and worth a look. I'm giving it 3 1/2 stars. Certainly not bottom of the barrel, but not that good that it should be at the top.

Now people, I should advise you that your Metamorpho will be in your neighborhood to collect a small (!) donation for his fine reviews (which benefit all of you). So, just do what your heart tells you to do. If not, I will call Lorna up to take care of the matter. Her number is (666) 666-6666. I've committed it to memory.

Another fine and outerworldly review by- Metamorpho ;)

(Drag Me to Hell Before I Have to See this Again!)
『I'm probably being a bit harsh as I had high expectations, but this was very formulaic and consequently predictable movie. I don't think there was a single surprise in the whole movie.

Worse, I can only guess at what the "horror" actually was. People miraculously turning up in a location doesn't qualify nor does extensive corpse play. On corpse play it is obvious that only one of the protagonists can actually do any acting and with the very fake "dummy" it was a little like the Brady Movie when the middle sister walks in with a blow up doll.

The acting was quite good and the séance scene was the reminiscent of the old Raimi, but even here there was nothing to add to the genre.

There are a lot of comments about the humor in the movie, but the only thing I was laughing at was how stupid I was to shell out for this movie.

In short, spend your time on watching something else... Almost anything else....』

(Good movie, trite ending)
『Good movie, worth a watch. But I wish the Raimis had come up with a less predictable ending. I mean, if you don't see it coming for a long time, you must be younger than the rating -- which is PG-13.

『Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is on her way to having it all: a devoted boyfriend (Justin Long), a hard-earned job promotion, and a bright future. But when she’s forced to make a tough decision that evicts an elderly woman from her house, Christine becomes the victim of an evil curse. Now she has only three days to dissuade a dark spirit from stealing her soul before she is dragged to hell for an eternity of unthinkable torment. Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man and The Evil Dead Trilogy) returns to the horror genre with a vengeance in the film that critics rave is “the most crazy, fun and terrifying horror movie in years!” (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly)』
『Touted as a return to Sam Raimi's horror-movie roots,Drag Me to Hellis indeed closer in spirit to the director'sEvil Deadpictures than to hisSpider-Manfilms. You got your gypsy gargoyles with rotted dentures, your upchucking corpses, your flexible two-way orifices--yes, Raimi's definitely back in the saddle. There's even a story: a sad loan officer (Alison Lohman) turns down the aforementioned denture-wearing gypsy for a loan extension, which leads to an evil curse and a date in hell in three days' time. A séance, an animal sacrifice, and a session in a storm-tossed graveyard will make the 72 hours pass very nervously, thank you, along with assorted scares. Justin Long plays Lohman's upper-class boyfriend, and Raimi fills the rest of the cast with some unusual and unfamiliar types. Along with the giddy horror-comedy that bursts out of the movie every 10 minutes or so, there's also an underlying mood of pity: Lohman's character is something of a hard-luck sad sack, who does enough wrong things to make her seem like a truly abject individual, well outside the heroic model of most multiplex offerings. (Lohman's own little-girl-lost quality adds to this feeling.) But don't let that get in the way of the fun-ride aspects of this goofy enterprise:Drag Me to Hellis a bunch of Z-movie gags wrapped in top-drawer production values.--Robert Horton

(Michael Powell's Psycho)
『Though the film seems to be a bit tame now, it was quite daring at the time and criticism of the film ruined Michael Powell's career. Powell took a chance in making a movie about a serial killer and paid for bringing up the topic. The film made in 1962 was disturbing to viewers and partly because Powell wasn't known for making horror films he was rejected in a way that Hitchcock got away with. A young man abused and tormented by his filmmaker father apparently created a monster of greater proportions. The man is a cameraman for a movie studio and a photographer of pornographic pictures. He uses a weapon in his tripod to murder women. The story centers around the psychological makeup of the young man and the discovery of his murders by the police and his neighbors. The reaction by the British critics caused Michael Powell's career to be derailed and criticized for years. They generally considered it to be unworthy of British Cinema and an impolite topic to have been brought to the screen. The extras are very insightful and well worth viewing and listening to.』

(Prescient, Insightful, and Riveting)
『This Pre-Psycho British thriller (that was banned shortly after it's release and now seems quaint) operates on two different levels, and it deserves it's reputation.

By today's standards it will be considered very tame, but it was groundbreaking in it's day. Like many Hitchcock films, we see the inner working and reasoning of a serial killer in such a way as to understand his motivations, and Carl Boehm gives an excellent and subtle personal portrayal of a soul tormented by his own desires.

On the surface it is a creepy psychological drama - rather kitsch-y by now with the "pin up girls". But when you have Moira Shearer giving possibly her best performance, lively and humorous, as one of the murder victims, you have something special, and something deeper. Anna Massey as the spinsterish girl who discovers it all is inspired casting.

This film has a lot to say about the voyeurism and destruction that persists within the industry. About how the industry chews up young women to suit the various perversions of Directors and producers... the purveyors to the public; and how the sickness feeds on itself. Powell's brilliance was to include himself as the demon father in the "home movie" sequences of the child being psychologically abused that caused.

It was ahead of it's time in anticipating how the pornography industry would infiltrate and become accepted within the mainstream media. (Think of the glossy gore movies being produced today by major studios.) It was also ahead of it's time in how "documentary" (think "news reporting") is used to excuse uninvolvement. "I can only film the action," I'm not responsible for getting involved and stopping the horror I'm filming.

This was also an extremely strong indictment of the idea of casting non-actors to achieve "reality." The rage of the new wave cinema of the time was to cast non-actors, and then put them in uncomfortable situations to try to evoke a "real" reaction from them. (Invariably what was - and still is - produced was fairly leaden performances of people who were uncomfortable being on film.) Powell's film uncannily makes the subtle point that a good actor can do a better job with half the effort. Of course all this enraged critics at the time. No one wants to be reminded they've been sold a bag of "magic beans." More shocking then was that it is also an indictment of how psychology - in studying human emotions as a subject - also alienates people from each other as "objects of study" instead of feeling for them and relating to them. Brilliant, and still deeply relevant.』

(And what were Dick and Harry doing while Tom was Peeping?)
『Peeping Tom (1960) This is the classic British chiller that was so disturbing it pretty much ruined the career of highly respected director Michael Powell (The Red Shoes). Seen today, almost fifty years later, it is of course diminished in its capacity to shock. But it is still both disturbing and entertaining. Carl Boehm plays Mark Lewis, an assistant cameraman working for a small studio in London. He has a secret life as well--he also photographs nudes for a local shop owner/pornographer. But he also has an even bigger secret--he kills women and photographs them at the moment of death, then plays back the film to himself over and over. He starts to get to know his downstairs neighbor Helen (Anna Massey), a sweet young woman attracted to the shy, quiet Mark. We gradually learn why he is so messed up--his scientist father filmed him constantly while he grew up and subjected him to "terror experiments," obsessing the boy with the effects of fear and how photography can capture life, even when it can no longer be lived normally. Of course, a stable relationship is out of the question for someone who is only comfortable watching life around him as a voyeur, so it becomes a matter of waiting for Mark to snap as the tension builds. It's amazing to a modern audience that this could so upset viewers back in 1960. It's not gory at all, with the violence suggested but still mighty intense. This is strong stuff, especially in the context of the time in which it was made and well worth catching for horror buffs. Also with Moira Shearer.』

(3 stars out of 4)
『The Bottom Line:

A film that's not as good as its recent critical reevaluation suggests that it is, Peeping Tom is an effective-enough psychological horror film helped by Powell's innovative direction and hurt by Carl Boehm's incongruous German accent; it's no Psycho, but it's not bad either.』

(A highly original film, and best of all, a fascinating supplement)
『The term "Peeping Tom" suggests a minor voyeur peering beneath window shades, through augered holes, up skirts--a little sexual thrill. But in this film, a.k.a. The Face of Fear and The Fotographer of Panic, the culprit has a movie camera and yearns to capture the terrible face of each woman before he kills her. Later, he can watch the sick shameful thing on the movie screen in his flat.

The tom is played by Carl Boehm, blandly like a glass of warm milk fortified with invisible Botulinus toxin. Moira Shearer is killed off early, but not until she's done a looong sexy unballetic dance to hotstuff music from her tape machine. The climax of the film is a pile-on of effects, so excessive that Director Powell and the Editor must have been laffing up their sleeves. Powell and his son Columba (Bumba) appear in a black/white sequence of the film to good effect.

One is startled by the bare flesh of two women in the porny room, with rumpled recliner, above the tobacco shop. As one woman turns to the camera, we see a badly repaired harelip: a photo of disfigurement can be heart sickening, can't it? The other woman with a looong peroxided ponytail does, I'm told, appear nude in a full-length side shot, but I must have been looking for a mike boom shadow at the time.

The excellent Supplement, A Very British Psycho (50 mins, 1997), contains of course the hindsights of a number of critics. But the lightning bolt is Leo Marks(1920-2001), who wrote the screenplay. A cryptography genius, he recounts his activities in British service during WWII. They included writing a unique poem for each agent to memorize for application in encrypting messages. And the use of a Silk Handkerchief printed with columns of minute letters as basis for coding--after use of a column, the agent cut it off and immediately burned it; if the Germans managed to seize part of a handkerchief and used it to send false messages, the English could perceive the deception. Leo Marks had the voice and aura of a great actor, and indeed was the voice of the Devil in Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ. Associated with him are the film Carve Her Name With Pride (1958) and the book Between Silk and Cyanide (1998), both available from Amazon. Admittedly, all this is quite tangential to Peeping Tom, but makes the Supplement a gem in its own right. The documentary was reedited in 2005 as The Eye Of The Beholder, with Scorsese and his moxie essentially replacing Marks.』

『A frank exploration of voyeurism and violence, Michael Powell's extraordinary film is the story of a psychopathic cameraman-his childhood traumas, sexual crises, and murderous revenge as an adult. Reviled by critics upon its initial release for its deeply unsettling subject matter, the film has since been hailed as a masterpiece.』
『Michael Powell lays bare the cinema's dark voyeuristic underside in this disturbing 1960 psychodrama thriller. Handsome young Carl Boehm is Mark Lewis, a shy, socially clumsy young man shaped by the psychic scars of an emotionally abusive parent, in this case a psychologist father (Michael Powell in a perverse cameo) who subjected his son to nightmarish experiments in fear and recorded every interaction with a movie camera. Now Mark continues his father's work, sadistically killing young women with a phallic-like blade attached to his movie camera and filming their final, terrified moments for his definitive documentary on fear. Set in contemporary London, which Powell evokes in a lush, colorful seediness, this film presents Mark as much victim as villain and implicates the audience in his scopophilic activities as we become the spectators to his snuff film screenings. Comparisons to Hitchcock'sPsycho, released the same year, are inevitable. Powell's film was reviled upon release, and it practically destroyed his career, ironic in light of the acclaim and success that greetedPsycho, but Powell's picture hit a little too close to home with its urban setting, full color photography, documentary techniques, and especially its uneasy connections between sex, violence, and the cinema. We can thank Martin Scorsese for sponsoring its 1979 rerelease, which presented the complete, uncut version to appreciative American audiences for the first time. This powerfully perverse film was years ahead of its time and remains one of the most disturbing and psychologically complex horror films ever made.--Sean Axmaker
