I've not yet watched the Spanish language version, but I'm looking forward to it "Buenas tardes, Mina, donde esta Lucy?" "Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do". Sorry, all of a sudden I thought of the classic TV show, I Bite Lucy. Anyway, the Phillip Glass accompaniment was kind of disconcerting, simply because it is so clear! When I think of watching classic monster films, I think scratchy: scratchy films, scratchy sound, and scratchy upholstery on the couch while I watch KTNT Channel 11 on Saturday night. So far, the extras are just great, and the "Universal Horror" feature is wonderful, especially the visits with the mayorr of Metropolis, Forrest J. Ackerman. It's been more than 30 years since I picked up a Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazine, but seeing the artifacts gathered around FJA took me right back, sort of like the opening scenes of Matinee did. While I REALLY enjoyed this, I'll probably never watch it again, but it was sure nice to see.』
(Bravo to Bela Lugosi and Philip Glass!) 『This set is so inexpensive, yet you get such a great bang for your buck!
Lugosi is mightily impressive as Dracula. No Dracula since has been anywhere near as good. He's tall, he's from Romania, he's imposing, he has a piercing stare - what more could you ask?
The new music score by Philip Glass is a fine complement to Lugosi's great performance. For some reason, maybe because of tight money in the early years of the Great Depression, the initial release featured no original music at all. Glass's score enhances the drama and makes the film far more exciting than the music-less version.
Glass is one of the best living composers in the world and he shows why with this score. His repeated patterns build a high level of tension and he elevates the tension brilliantly during the big moments.
The music is performed by the Kronos Quartet, one of the finest string quartets in the world. Glass and the Kronos Quartet show that you don't need a studio orchestra to make great film music. Unless you don't really like music at all, you will want to watch the film with this magnificent score.
As for the other elements of the film, the other actors are fine, though not special, save for the wonderfully campy Dwight Frye as Renfield and Charles Gerrard providing comic relief as Martin. The cinematography is great, the sets are great, the script is good and Tod Browning's direction is at least adequate.
Still, the main reason to watch this production is for Lugosi's iconic performance, brilliantly complemented by Glass's music. Bravo!』
(Dracula (1931)-Lugosi defined Dracula!) 『Dracula was filmed in 1931 and really started the Universal tradition for great horror. I rate this grand old film at five stars and it is really the "gold standard" against which to rate all Dracula remakes. This film introduced me to the Dracula legend as a kid in the late 50's. The only thing I can think of that might have made this film a bit better is the beautifully composed and tailored music we all loved so much in later Universal horror movies. I feel to this day that the art work for Castle Dracula, and the approach to the castle via Borgo Pass were absolutely magnificent.
Lugosi helped define the role of Dracula, and everything you may find endearing about him and his acting style I consider a vital part of that wonderful character. He honed and refined his Dracula characterization on stage in the many theatrical performances he delivered and then brought this iconic character to the big screen for Universal. By the way, the DVD was a wonderful transfer in glorious B&W.
I am a great fan of Lugosi and remember him for much of his work for Universal and other fine film companies. Again, Lugosi defined Dracula for many of us! 』
(BROWNING AND LUGOSI SET THE BAR) 『A true classic of the genre in every sense of the word. Bela Lugosi simply can't be topped as the definitive Count Dracula. For devotees of this film the 75th Anniversary Edition is the one to get, especially since Steve Haberman's excellent audio commentary finally sets the record straight by debunking the recent unwarranted criticism Tod Browning's version has received when it's compared to the alternately filmed Spanish version. Haberman points out some serious flaws with the Spanish version that clearly emphasizes the superiority of Browning's film, and restores the latter's deserved reputation as one of the seminal works of cinematic horror.
My one complaint with the disc set is Peter Glass' music score. It's just plain terrible. It does exactly everything a music score should NOT do. It's too loud and it's CONSTANTLY meandering its way throughout the entire film, which gets really annoying. Thankfully the music track is optional, but it does such a disservice to the film that it shouldn't have been included at all.』
(2 stars out of 4) 『The Bottom Line:
A movie whose iconic nature has prevented many people from realizing that it's actually a rather poor film, Dracula is only worth watching to see Bela Legosi provide the definitive version of the world's most famous vampire; aside from Legosi the movie has little to offer besides lethargic pacing, a complete anti-climax of an ending, and uninspired direction by Tod Browning.』 『Dracula (The Restored Version) Although there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker's classic tale, none is more enduring than the 1931 original. The ominous portrayal of Count Dracula by Bela Lugosi, combined with horror specialist director Tod Browning, help to create the film's eerie mood. Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time. Dracula (Featuring New Music By Philip Glass) The original version of Dracula starring Bela Lugosi has been remastered to feature a specially-composed musical score by world-renowned composer Philip Glass and performed by Kronos Quartet. Glass' music lends greater depth to an already timeless classic! Dracula (Original Spanish Version) Filmed simultaneously with the English language version, the Spanish version of Dracula is completely different, yet equally ominous vision of the horror classic. Utilizing the same sets and identical script, cinematographer George Robinson and a vibrant cast including Carlos Villarias and Lupita Tovar deliver this chilling and evocative tale.』 『When Universal Pictures picked up the movie rights to a Broadway adaptation ofDracula, they felt secure in handing the property over to the sinister team of actor Lon Chaney and director Tod Browning. But Chaney died of cancer, and Universal hired the Hungarian who had scored a success in the stage play: Béla Lugosi. The resulting film launched both Lugosi's baroque career and the horror-movie cycle of the 1930s. It gets off to an atmospheric start, as we meet Count Dracula in his shadowy castle in Transylvania, superbly captured by the great cinematographer Karl Freund. Eventually Dracula and his blood-sucking devotee (Dwight Frye, in one of the cinema's truly mad performances) meet their match in a vampire-hunter called Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). If the later sections of the film are undeniably stage bound and a tad creaky, Dracula nevertheless casts a spell, thanks to Lugosi's creepilylugubrious manner and the eerie silences of Browning's directing style. (After a mood-enhancing snippet ofSwan Lakeunder the opening titles, there is no music in the film.)Frankenstein, which was released a few months later, confirmed the horror craze, and Universal has been making money (and countless spin-off projects) from its twin titans of terror ever since. Certainly the role left a lasting impression on the increasingly addled and drug-addicted Lugosi, who was never quite able to distance himself from the part that made him a star. He was buried, at his request, in his black vampire cape.--Robert Horton』

This 1980 film has all the elements of a good horror movie: suspense, creepy characters and settings, and chilling music. It even has a few lines of cheesy dialogue (something no horror flick should be without! lol). The plot is interesting and has a number of twists - including the revelation of a family secret, which leads to grave consequences.
College student Scotty Parker (Rebecca Balding) is unable to find on-campus housing. As a result, she rents a room at the Engels seaside mansion, which has been turned into a boarding house. Three other students also rent rooms there. When one of them is found murdered on the nearby beach, the police begin an investigation - with a special focus on the Engels family - but can they solve the mystery before the other students meet the same grisly fate?
Barbara Steele delivers an outstanding performance as the mute and disturbed Victoria Engels. Her eyes alone are enough to frighten you. Yvonne De Carlo, in her 50s at the time, plays her mother and also delivers a credible performance. The pair is perfectly cast, due to both their talent and very noticeable resemblance.
I am definitely looking forward to owning this movie on DVD ... finally.
Many thanks to those who made it happen!』

I know which part I missed. So, I know which content to search. And finally which part I missed and figure it all out in the film. This was a great movie and scary. Stephen King is an excellent writer. I know I will watch it again and again.』
(I Love This Movie!) 『This is my favorite Stephen King movie by far! I remember watching it as a 3 night mini-series some years ago and fell in love with it. All of the characters' personalities are strong and make this movie interesting. I also do not think it's a "cheesy ghost movie," like some have said. The hauntings are unique and intriguing.』
(Rose Red (2002)-Not very original for a Steven King story) 『Rose Red (2002) was not very original for a Steven King story. I enjoyed it to the tune of four stars but the reason is that I am an easy mark for almost any haunted house story. King stated during the documentary that he wanted to make the ultimate haunted house film. In order to make this the definative haunted house movie Steven King recycled some old ideas and lines from Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, and his own work in THE SHINING (and probably others that I am not aware of).
I am certain many fans recognized the plot elements and lines from THE HAUNTING including: The house is coming alive; Some houses are born bad (which was credited) and the basic idea of the plot which assumed that psychics would serve as a catalyst to the old house. I did enjoy this film and the only thing I was really upset with was the many very long lingering shots of the moody sets and CGI images of Rose Red which I think were only used to fill up the six hours of air time. Special effects were very good for a made for TV movie.』
(Mystery Lover) 『Red Rose is a wonderful follow-up for the Diary of Ellen Rimbauer. I have both tapes and have enjoyed them immensely.』
(Good if you like haunted house movies) 『I'll admit straight-out, this is not the best or highest budget haunted house movie you could see. But what it does have in spades is ambiance that give the abstract foreboding feeling that a haunted house should. There's no direct sense of how exactly the house is evil, just that it perturbs, distorts, and manipulates it's inhabitants into insanity through visions and hallucinations. That, and the house expands *itself* infinitely (easy to get lost in and no one knows the count of the rooms). This is the cause of everyone's death through Rose Red (I'm sure you saw this one coming).
EG - One person sees statues moving and has a heart attack. He would have survived if he could get into the house, but all the doors and windows are mysteriously locked. The only person who sees him is convinced that he is a hallucination (due to the house OD'ing everyone on them), and refuses to submit to it. Meanwhile, the woman who brought this psychic group there is too obsessed with the house (it is a pretty bad@$$ English Manor) to let a pesky thing like death get in the way of her studies of it, namely of the super-psychic kid who eventually tames the house. Pretty cool overall.
Pros : - Cool house - Cool story - Detailed
Cons : - Long (4+ hours) - Low production values for a movie (made for tv, but still decent) - Some annoying acting』 『The chilling tale of dr. The story (about a researcher into the paranormal who takes a team of psychics into a haunted house) recycles themes that King has used before--a telekinetic girl, a house with its own consciousness--but for his fans, the familiarity is probably comfortable and even enjoyable. As we've been consistently trying to switch it up between great horror, average horror, awful b, slashers, creatures, and classics we landed on Carrie which is well loved in the horror community. Surprisingly the old boy Sid and his many years of watching flicks has never seen Carrie. Really no reason behind it, guess it's just one of those that never made it on the priority list despite it's popularity. When it appeared on a movie channel the other night we figured we are due for a classic and might as well give Carrie a run.
Carrie had a star studded cast lead by Mr. Saturday Night Fever himself John Travolta, Sissy Spacek, and P.J Soles (the "see anything you like?" chick from Halloween)who was just as annoying/hot in this one too. Since it's so popular here goes the standard brief Sid description; Carry White is the shy quiet girl in high school that nobody talks to. After getting her um..time of the month issue in the shower at school she's teased non-stop by the usual high school goons and hot chicks. The kids wind up getting in trouble and decide to take things out on Carrie when she goes to the Prom with jock Tommy Ross. Only problem is Carrie is a real mixer, a king mixer! She winds up getting some hardcore revenge with her telepathic powers.
For Sid Carrie was a really solid flick, but not one that would offer anything more then the one time watch. Yes it was good, and yes it's a classic, but it just wasn't something we could do again and again like Halloween. It was nice to finally get it under our belt though since it comes with the utmost regard. Plus it's always nice to mix the horror genre up with all different decades and the 70's is one of the best. It does have that great gritty 70's feel that's a Sid favorite. Certainly one we would recommend to check out if you haven't already and probably one we would've liked back in the glory days. We sure Santa probably loves it.

(Carrie) 『Carrie (Speical Edition)
The movie is considered a classic. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't call it one of my all-time favorite horror movies. I did notice a few problems with the speical edition dvd, I dont know if other people have the same problem with this dvd
When the woman tells the gym teacher to shove it up her...and that's it. This is the first time viewing the film and do not know if it's like that in the original version or this is a screw up. I think it is because the gym teacher got really mad hahahaha.
When the three guys are picking out tuxedo's, it quickly goes into Alvin and The Chipmunk mode for a brief few seconds. That has to be a dvd error and not apart of the original film.
That's the two problems I had with the movie but other then that, it was enjoyable.』

("Sissy Spacek Is Unforgettable!") 『Sissy Spacek won a well deserved Oscar nomination as Best Actress for her portrayal as a shy teenager with powers of telekinesis who is harrassed by her classmates in "Carrie". This nomination is unheard of as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rarely acknowledges performances in horror films. "Carrie" is based on the splendid Stephen King novel and also stars John Travolta in one of his first films. Piper Laurie gives a blood chilling performance as Carrie's mother, a Bible -thumping woman who demands her daughter live a celibate and isolated life. The DVD is beautiful and comes with a collectible booklet featuring info on the film. Also included is a featurette featuring interviews with Spacek and others, an animated photo gallery, theatrical trailer, and an interview with director Brian DePalma. French and english subtitles are included with a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes. "Carrie" spawned a sequel in 1999 called "Carrie 2" and a remake of the film was adapted for television on NBC in 2002.』
(Essential Viewing) 『In league with 'The Shining', 'Cujo', and so on. A 70s masterpiece in the horror genre. It is relentless in scary psychological undertones that play on the emotions, sympathy as much as terror and wonder. Sissy Spacek is dynomite. The filming is dynomite as well with touches of the 70s that you make you wonder how you survived this era. Truly creepy but a very interesting drama as well. Beauty and terror ride high in this feat by Brian DePalma - and the mind of Stephen King.』 『Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, Carrie "catches the mind, shakes it and refuses to let it go" (Time)! Starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (in OscarÂ(r)-nominated* performances), John Travolta and Amy Irving, this ultimate revenge fantasy is "absolutely spellbinding" (Roger Ebert), "outrageously witty" (Los Angeles Times) and one of the all-time great horror classics! At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a tortured high-school misfit with no confidence, no friends...and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her 'special gift,' causes allhell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone!』 『This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh』

I personally like to save space even if you lose some packing material, I take these over those big box sets that clog too much space. As far the Movies go, Part 1 is a classic and one of the best horror movies of all time, part 2 as I already mentioned is a dud, makes no sense with Freddy not being in dreams, and of course the homosexual themes, don't understand why people try to defend this movie, it's horrible. Part 3 is clearly the best sequel of the series, while Freddy is still scary and the return of Heather Langenkamp is good enough, the story is great with Freddy victimizing all the kids at the asylum. Part 4 is a decent sequel but this is when Freddy was more funny than scary. Overall a great value.』

(A great value pack!) 『As most of you probably know, the Nightmare on Elm Street series has its highs and its lows. Out of these 4, the first and third are highlights with 2 and 4 being.. a little lackluster. None the less, whether you're a casual fan or a major fanatic, you'll have a blast screaming or making fun of Freddy and his horrific antics with this easy-to-store value pack. It comes with 2 double sided discs that shows the movie in full screen or wide, with a bare minimum of bonus features. I thought the first four would be enough that I'd never want to watch another movie with an Elm reference, but actually I enjoyed them enough that I rushed to buy A Nightmare on Elm Street 5-8: 4 Film Favorites, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way.
Like I said, this is a great value pack. I love me some Nightmare, but not enough to store 8 DVDs. With this I get all the fun without the guilt of having to find a place to put it. If you are a major fan, however, and would like an attractive box set to show off your fanhood, The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection looks like a great box set of the entire series (doesn't include Freddy VS Jason, though).

(A mediocre start to a great series) 『I'm going to start out by saying that I love this show. I have to be one of the only guys in the world who likes this show. Now this was not the best season by a long shot. I don't think too many people even acknowledge this season. What it does is set the groudwork for future seasons. The plot and all the main characters are introduced nicely. The key problem with this season: low budget.
Now as many of you know, the series is based off a 1992 movie of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry, and Donald Sutherland. I haven't seen the movie, but I've heard it's horrible. Taking that into account, it is surprising that this show was ever concieved. Obviously, they didn't have a lot to work with. As a result, there are many problems with the first season. The costumes and makeup look kind of cheesy. The action scenes are not very well choreographed. I could be wrong, but I don't think many of the actors(with the exception of Anthony Stewart Head) had done much acting. I didn't think the acting was horrible, but it's not excellent either. The villian of this season, the master, is kind of lame. I got real tired of his quips and attempts at being scary. SPOILER ALERT. His fight with Buffy at the end of the season did not make any sense. How does Buffy easily kill the most powerful vampire on the planet when he easily killed her five minutes earlier?
Even with problems like these, the season is still okay. There were elements of this season that would get better with better writing and a bigger budget. For example, I saw right away that Xander is supposed to be the funny comic relief guy. Most of his little jokes weren't that funny in this season, but I could see that his delivery of those lines was excellent. And in later seasons, he does become a very funny character.
Overall, the season was okay. It interested me enough to get me to watch the second season. So if you want to get into a great television series, buy oor rent this DVD, suffer through it, and then you get to watch seasons two and three, some of the best television I've ever seen.』

(Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1) 『Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the best shows ever. I really loved the first season and every season after that. Season one will always be one of my favorites though. It has great episodes and a great story line. I still watch it years after the show finished and continue to enjoy every minute of it.』
(If you've been to high school...) 『... you'll love Buffy.
Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is the Chosen One, the Slayer. As Watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) says in the intro to each episode: "she alone must stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness." Sort of a rough gig for a 16 year old. But as we come to see in this terrific first season, Buffy can handle it.
Despite the title, Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete First Season (Slim Set) is about a lot more than vampires. There's invisible girls, green horned demons, ravenous hyenas, and the usual complement of ghosts and ghouls. But even beyond that Buffy is a show about what it's like to be a teenager. In a hilarious twist that will appeal to the poetic justice of teenagers (and those who remember the angst of being a teen) everywhere, writer and director Joss Whedon has situated Buffy's new high school atop a Hellmouth, thereby reinforcing the popular teen maxim that "highschool is hell." Well in Buffy, it actually is. Whedon carries this metaphor through without, using various supernatural scenarios to mirror the realities of what it feels like for a teen in high school.
For example, in "Out of Mind, Out of Sight," Buffy and friends must battle a girl who was so unpopular that she literally became invisible and is now out to exact her revenge on the most popular girl in school. Other episodes like "The Pack," "Teacher's Pet," and "I, Robot, You, Jane" deal with similar issues including bullying, having a crush on your teacher, and internet dating. Whedon's smart and funny writing ensures that each episode is relatable but never preachy. And of course, though Buffy's job description is to fight against evil in the name of goodness, she is no goody two-shoes herself. Saving the world isn't easy, even for the slayer. Buffy skips classes, argues with her mother and her Watcher, and frequently makes mistakes. But as the quintessential rebel with a cause, we forgive her and find ourselves identifying with her even through the mistakes. Add to these qualities the excellently choreographed fight scenes that fill each episode, the hilarious and heart-felt trials and tribulations that face Buffy and the Scooby gang (including Alyson Hannigan and Nicholas Brendan), and the heart-rending romance that springs up between Buffy and Angel (David Boreanaz), and you've got a show that you can't stop watching. Yes, the clothing and the sayings are dated, and sometimes the acting and cinematography leave a little to be desired, but the underlying messages and feelings are still universal years later. If you've never seen Buffy before, get ready: you're in for a treat!』 『INTO EACH GENERATION A SLAYER IS BORN. Now you can own the entire first season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. All 12 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 3-disc collector's edition. From "Welcome to the Hellmouth," "The Harvest" and "Angel" to "Nightmares," "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" and "Prophecy Girl," these Season One episodes are a must for every true Buffy fan.』 『Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) looks like your typical perky high-schooler, and like most, she has her secret fears and anxieties. However, while most teens are worrying about their next date, their next zit, or their next term paper, Buffy's angsting over the next vampire she has to slay. See, Buffy, a young woman with superhuman strength, is the "chosen one," and she must help rid the world of evil, namely by staking demons. The exceptional first season ofBuffy the Vampire Slayerintroduces us to the treacherous world of Sunnydale High School (where Buffy moved after torching her previous high school's gym). The characters there include "watcher" Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and the original "Scooby Gang" members--friendly geek Xander (Nicholas Brendon), computer whiz Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and snobbish popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter)--who aid Buffy in her quest. Those used to the darker tone thatBuffytook in its later seasons will be surprised by the lighter feeling these first 12 episodes have--it's kind of likeBuffy 90210as the cast grapples with regular teen problems in addition to saving the world from demonic darkness. Fans of the show will enjoy the crisp writing, the phenomenal chemistry of the cast (already well-established within the first few episodes), and the introduction to characters that would stay for many seasons, including moody vampire Angel (David Boreanaz). Through it all, Gellar carries the series with amazing confidence, whether conveying the despair of high school or dispatching various demons--she's one of TV's most distinctive and strongest heroines.--Mark Englehart』

(Underworld Trilogy) 『All of the 'Underworld' movies are absolutely terrific and satisfying horror/thriller films. I don't have a favorite out of the three motion pictures. Each one is uniquely great in its own way. What I truly admire about this trilogy is the fact that it's so dark and gothic: set in a world stained by the blood of war between the vampires and lycans (werewolves). The special fx are excellent and the sound fx are just as good. The music (score) in each film sounds great and goes along well with the dark atmosphere. All of the cast delivered fine performances. Kate Beckinsale was made for the role as the vampire Selene: no one else could have done better. Michael Sheen's performance as the lycan Lucian was awesome! I also admire Rhona Mitra for her acting as the vampire Sonja in 'Rise of the Lycans'. And Bill Nighy gave an unforgettable performance of dark, relentless malice as the vampire king Viktor: he was absolutely perfect for that role! The plot that is set in all three films might seem a little confusing the first time you watch them: especially in 'Underworld' and 'Underworld Evolution'. There are a lot of background stories and different twists to the plot which are all rather surprisingly enteresting. Overall, the entire story set in the 'Underworld' trilogy, though a little confusing at first, is very entertaining and ominously dark. The plot offers a lot of drama, forbidden romance, betrayal, suspense, and awesome action sequences! All three DVDs have excellent quality and deliver great special features. I didn't actually buy the box set. I bought the DVDs seperately: I just wanted to review all three films at once. I own the unrated extended version of the first 'Underworld'. It is much better than the theatrical released R version because of the added 12 minutes of footage that further enhances the plot. And the special features are very enteresting to watch. Directors Len Wisemen and Patrick Tatopoulos, along with their excellent crew, have directed some wonderful horror/thriller films here. In my opinion they are underrated and are much better than the overrated 'Twighlight' flicks that are contradicting to what the world of vampires and lycans should really be like. The 'Underworld' trilogy has been loyal to the true fans of horror and fantasy by delivering a very gothic and dark world of action-packed gore, forbidden romance, and some dramatic sequences. I can't wait to see the next 'Underworld' movie. It is rumoured to be a 2011 theatrical release.』
(Nice set for an Underworld fan) 『We had watched the first 2 underworld movies many times. When the 3rd was available on dvd I decided to buy it. The price was great to buy all 3 instead of just the 3rd one.』
(Epic Vampire/ Warewolf Trilogy) 『I absolutely loved all three of these movies. That is why I was so excited to see all three in one pack for the price of 1.5 DVD's. Thank you Amazon!』
(3 Star) 『Item arrived quickly at my door, and as described. However there was no screen paper in the DVD Case. Only the 3 DVD Disc where in the Case.』 『

Underworld
BlademeetsThe CrowandThe MatrixinUnderworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments ofGodzilla,Men in Black, andIndependence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses.--Jeff Shannon
Underworld: Evolution Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence makeUnderworld: Evolutiona reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hitUnderworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turnsUnderworld: Evolutioninto an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal,Underworld: Evolutionsucceeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of theUnderworldfranchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better thanVan Helsing!--Jeff Shannon
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
This prequel to Len Wiseman’sUnderworldandUnderworld: Evolutionis distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale).Underworld: Rise of the Lycanstakes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership.Rise of the Lycansis set mostly within the walls of vampire lord Viktor’s (Bill Nighy) castle, so the film’s silver, black, and blue palette reflects a world happening under moonlight. From the outset, when Viktor brings Lucian, the first werewolf, into the world, this villainous bloodsucker’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), is smitten with Lucian’s hairy appearance and instinctual intelligence. As years pass, Lucian grows tired of watching his race suffer slavery and imprisonment, and recruits a human named Raze (Kevin Grevioux) to assist rebellion. This archetypal plot is not so riveting, and what carriesUnderworld: Rise of the Lycansare the battle scenes between vampires and werewolves, which are excitingly fast-paced and brutal. The whole film adopts a medieval battlefield aesthetic that carries an otherwise clichéd story about illicit love and freedom fighting. Some characters, like the traitor vampire Tannis (Steven Mackintosh), also intrigues throughout, as one guesses who he will ally with.Underworld: Rise of the Lycansmay not be the finest film in the werewolf and vampire archives independently, but its mixed monstrosity makes it unique and entertaining, especially on a big screen.--Trinie Dalton

Mama didn't raise no fool, But that's horror movies, people doing dumb stuff. Although Bruce Campbell is a legend.don't watch if your queasy.』
(Gore galore, but not much more...) 『THE EVIL DEAD
(USA - 1982)
Aspect ratio: 1.37:1 Theatrical soundtrack: Mono
Whilst on vacation at an isolated backwoods cabin, five students are terrorized by ancient spirits which possess and kill them, one by one.
Clearly the work of talented filmmakers going places, this OTT gore-fest is alternately loud, excessive, stylish and disgusting, in roughly equal amounts. Debut director Sam Raimi throws everything into the mix, perhaps to atone for a flimsy plot and stock characters (well-played by an excellent cast, including cult-performer-in-the-making Bruce Campbell), and while much of it is tongue-in-cheek, some scenes leapfrog the taste barrier with unconscionable glee (Raimi has since admitted the 'tree rape' sequence was a mistake, for example).
Sadly, the movie is rendered monotonous by its excessive pace and comic insouciance (the sequels - beginning with EVIL DEAD II (1987) - went even further in this direction), and the movie quickly succumbs to the laws of diminishing returns; once you've seen one drooling demon getting its head cut off, you've seen 'em all! Fantastic low budget production values, however, and the makeup effects are dandy. 』
(The woods are alive . . . with the sound of horror!) 『Believe it, ladies and gentlemen. The Evil Dead is a bloody, gory, explicit, and sometimes darkly humorous low-budget horror movie. There's no doubt about it. If you have a weak stomach, you'll probably find yourself puking in the toilet halfway through the film. Good thing I don't have one (no offense). This is a gore-filled masterpiece. It really is. If you think Saw and House of 1000 Corpses (both of which are great horror films, by the way) are bloody and gory, wait until you see this one. Like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead is a prime example of how hands should be bitten off, and how bodies should be dismembered with an axe. And it's all done in such a low budget; it's unbelievable. I have to say that this is an excellent movie to watch on Halloween, and an excellent movie to watch any day or night. It's scary, funny, bloody, gory, intense . . . . and that's basically how it is.
P.S. Bruce Campbell is ****ing awesome. At least in the second half of the movie, anyway.』
(Evil Dead) 『This was a suprizing DVD! It was surpizing in the fact that I really loveded it! I had never seen any of the Evil Dead movies but was told to watch them. I am a huge Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi fan and this did not disapoint! I would deff say that if you're a horror fan and a Bruce and Sam fan this ones a must see!』
(One of my favorite films ever.) 『Love this film. Lots of blood, guts and violence. Loved the setting, storyline and atmosphere and background music. This used to scare the mess out of me as a kid and still gives me nightmares even now when I watch it. I still have bad dreams about the evil spirit in the forest. Don't listen to people The only thing I would complain about is that some of the effects don't hold up that well, but this picture is over twenty years old so we can over looks that.Buy this and make sure you get the remastered version
』 『Director Sam Raimi's first film has achieved legendary status since its 1982 release, and for good reason. Though perhaps not as widely seen as its two sequels, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE EVIL DEAD is arguably the best of the three. It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash (Bruce Campbell). So, Ash is left with no other way to survive than to dismember the living corpses of his sister, girlfriend, and two of his friends. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film boasts some impressive camera work and extremely over-the-top gore effects as well as a sense of humor much more subtle than the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the two sequels.』 『In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Deadlacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2andArmy of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget.--Simon Leake』

A remake of 1933's Mystery of the Wax Museum, this 1953 Andre de Toth-directed movie reflected the beginning of the 3-D mania. The film stars Vincent Price as Prof. Henry Jarrod, a talented and obsessive wax sculptor who runs a waxworks museum in New York circa early 1900s. His greedy partner, Matthew Burke (Roy Roberts) is dissatisfied at their meager profits, and insists on displaying more suggestive and sensational exhibits, much to Jarrod's chagrin. Then in a fit of temper, Burke suggests burning down the waxworks and collecting the sizable insurance money, and in the ensuing scuffle, starts a fire. Jarrod survives the fire, but is badly hurt, and after some time spent recuperating and apparently restored to full health, starts a new waxworks with the aid of deaf-mute Igor (a very young Charles Bronson).
The highlight of Jarrod's exhibit is the one featuring sensational crimes, both past and contemporary, and includes an exhibit of Burke himself, a recent victim of murder, though the case has not been solved. Burke's fiancee Cathy was also killed, and when Sue Allen (Phyllis Kirk) who happen to be Cathy's friend, visits the exhibit, she finds the wax replica of Cathy to be too life-like. The mystery of Jarrod's wax museum is gradually unravelled as the movie progresses.
I love the Gothic atmosphere in the movie, and the rich, vibrant color of the wax exhibits. Price's portrayal as the deranged wax sculptor is credible and mesmerizing (and I just love the way he delivers his lines!). Though Cushing and Lee are my favorite horror actors, Price definitely ranks high on my list of all-time horror greats. The movie flows well too, and suspense is gradually built-up, though I have to admit that the plot is quite predictable. The picture quality is not altogether satisfactory, at least on the DVD I viewed, but this is definitely a horror classic, and a must-have for fans of classic horror. 』
(Solid movie that holds up pretty well over time) 『This 1953 color movie was originally released as a 3D movie, something very popular in the 1950s. The storyline is basically this: It is early twentieth century New York, and a wax sculptor named Henry Jarrod (Vincent Price) refuses to give in to his financial partner's wishes for better wax exhibits to boost profits for the museum. In reliation, this business partner, Matthew Burke (Roy Roberts) sets fire to the museum which destroys all of Jarrod's life's work. However, Jarrod survives the fire and is badly burned as a result. Jarrod disguises his facial burns with a wax mask he has made to appear normal looking. His goal is to open a new museum called House Of Wax and restock it with actual people who are his murder victims, but covered with wax. He does all of this because the fire that disfigured him and destroyed his life's work has made him become a madman. In the end, it is he who is a victim of his own wax trap.
This movie also stars Carolyn Jones (Morticia Addams from the Addams Family, and Marsha Queen Of Diamonds from the 1960s Batman TV series) as murder victim Cathy Gray. It also stars Phyllis Kirk as Gray's suspicious friend Sue Allen (who notices that all the waxworks are wax-coated murder victims of Jarrod), and Charles Bronson, who plays a deaf-mute sculptor.
The acting and the movie in general is a little campy, yet spooky at the same time. All in all, it is a good movie that was the first horror movie of Vincent Price's career. This DVD also comes with the 1933 color film that inspired the 1953 remake, Mystery Of The Wax Museum, starring Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray (King Kong 1933). I like this original version just as much as the remake. I definitely recommend this double feature DVD.』
(Oldie but goodie) 『I found The Ghost and Mr. Chicken at Amazon and upon seeing the price, jumped on it. I remembered seeing this film as a child and thought it was a perfect family style film to watch with my children for Halloween as it has that perfect combination of just a bit of creepiness with lots of laughs and a little drama.』
(house of wax) 『this classical horror movie is one of my favorites. with vincent price, frank lovejoy, carolyn jones and the young and unknown at that time charles bronson, plays a renowned wax sculptor assistant. a wax sculptor plunged into madness when an arsonist destroys his life work. unable to use his flame scarred hands he devises a new and murdeous way of restocking his house of wax. greats horror movie.』
(Two Great Movies For The Price Of One) 『Andres de Toth's 1953 HOUSE OF WAX has a great ensemble cast. Vincent Price, Phyllis Kirk, Frank Lovejoy, Paul Picerni, and a very young Charles Bronson and Carolyn Jones. The story/script is good and moves along at a good pace. The beautiful color of the film and the time period, around the 1890's or turn of the century, add to the story. Love the clothes and impressive sets and the "look" of the film.
In my opinion, this film, of the two movies on the DVD, has more of a horror feel to it and Vincent Price is very good as the sculptor/owner of a wax museum who is trying to get enough wax figures ready in time for the opening. I love the man who plays the advertising barker outside the Museum with the Paddle-ball!! Really good!! Love that scene! This movie was released in 3-D so the ball is supposed to look like it is coming at you.
Michael Curtiz's 1933 The MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM was handled a bit differently. This movie takes place in 1933, is also in color and also a good movie with fine performances by Lionel Atwill and Glenda Farrell. Glenda plays a newspaperwoman and has a bigger part than Fay Wray (who got second billing). Glenda's character is not in the remake.
I feel that this movie is a bit lighter in tone as far as the horror element as compared to HOUSE OF WAX. Maybe that is because of Glenda's character who is fun, sharp and sassy. This film was pre-code (1933) as the movie deals pretty heavily with a junkie instead of a drunkard as in the remake and Glenda asks a policeman/friend "How's your sex life?". That would NOT be asked in the remake.
Both films are good, just a little different. But as remakes go, the 1953 HOUSE OF WAX is excellent.
』 『Museum fire turns handsome man into human monster who steals bodies from morgue to create lifelike images in wax.』 『House of Waxbrought Vincent Price into the horror genre, where he fit as snugly as a scalpel in a mad scientist's hand. A remake of the 1933 filmMystery of the Wax Museum, this entertaining Gothic shocker casts Price as a sculptor of wax figures; his unwilling victims--er, "models"--lend their bodies to his lifelike depictions of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc. The film was one of the top 10 moneymakers of its year, thanks in part to the 3-D gimmick, which explains why so many things are aimed at the camera (why else would the paddleball man be there?). Footnote to history: director Andre De Toth was blind in one eye, and thus could not see in three dimensions.
Not at all a musty relic of the early-sound era, the originalMystery of the Wax Museum(shot in a soft, trial version of Technicolor) is saucy, pre-Code fun. As corpses disappear from the morgue, Lionel Atwill's wax museum adds to its displays. Coincidence, or the work of the hideously deformed fiend stalking the Manhattan night? Most of the snappy dialogue comes courtesy of reporter Glenda Farrell, a vintage wisecracking dame.--Robert Horton』

Despite some contemporary criticisms, the rough-edged production values and lack of a music score actually work in the movie's favor. Boris Karloff gained celluloid immortality with his classic portrayal of the Monster - a multifaceted performance that does not overshadow Colin Clive's brilliant intensity as Dr. Henry Frankenstein. Special kudos to makeup genius Jack Pierce and the influential art direction of Charles D. Hall. Thanks to Whale's distinctive gothic flair, this Universal Pictures adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel helped define the horror genre while cementing its place in cinema history.』
(Frankenstein... The brain is useless. We must find another brain.) 『Frankenstein: 5 out of 10: Frankenstein is a hard film to review. So much that was shocking in the film when it first came out is muted today. (Desecration of the grave ect.) As a standalone film rather than an American Classic Frankenstein leaves much to be desired.
The film is very stagy with people exiting stage left and posing theatrically. The fight scene between the monster and the bride on her wedding day is Mystery Science Theater 3000 material. The movie is quite short (running about an hour) and character development is minimal. If you real Shellys original work you are likely to be appalled by some of the changes.
The brain is in the film is one of a criminal (Abby Normal) as opposed to an everyman. This changes a major component of the novel. In the book, Frankenstein became evil because he was rejected by man not because of some predestined nature. The destruction of Frankensteins family by his experiment that goes against Gods will is barely touched upon and the romance between Victor (excuse me Henry; they changed the name to Victors younger deader brother) and his fiancée is barely touched upon.
While the vastly superior Bride of Frankenstein surprised with its effectiveness and advanced film techniques Frankenstein surprises with its brevity and staginess. But in its defense it is a classic and Boris Karloff is great as the monster.』
(A brief comment) 『Please note that this is on the movie and not the digitized DVD versions.
I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep last night, turned on the TV, and happened to catch this since it's only about an hour and a half long. Amazingly I had never seen the original Frankenstein before.
This might be the most iconic horror film of all time, done in a time before the Hollywood censorship code of 1935, and having inspired literally hundreds of knock-offs over the decades. Far from being the early raw, naive horrorfest that others have seen in it here, in fact the movie shows great finesse, sophistication, and creativity at almost every turn.
The actors all turn in outstandingly nuanced performances (of course Karloff's would become the sine qua non of such roles for decades), the mood inspiring cinematography and backdrops are appropriately and overwhelmingly dark and creepy, the sets (especially the lab in the tower) are spectacular, the electrical machinery and special effects during the storm are impressive even by modern standards, and the suspense and the action gripping and spine tingling.
This is truly a classy blast from the past that has lost nothing to all the later reprisals with their bigger budgets and more sophisticated and advanced special effects. Frankenstein remains a pioneering classic that still stands head and shoulders above the competition.』
(Boris Karloff Frankenstein) 『I've always enjoyed the old movies, and my grandsons wanted to see this one. It will be nice to have in my collection.』
(worse packaging EVER) 『I opened this and first the disc holders fell out, and then I saw that the sheet including the important info on the film comes off...what the heck were they thinking! Worst packaging ever. If you like he movie fine, but you will have to get another DVD holder - a double to house this baby and make your own new cover info from photos here.』 『Boris Karloff stars as the screen's most memorable monster in what many consider to be the greatest horror film ever made. Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster (Karloff) out of lifeless body parts. It's director James Whale's adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel blended with Karloff's compassionate portrayal of a creature groping for identity that makes Frankenstein a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time.』 『"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" For years unheard, this line has been restored, along with the legendary scene of the childlike monster tossing a little girl into a lake, in James Whale'sFrankenstein, one of the most famous and influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success ofDracula, Universal assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela Lugosi as the monster. When Lugosi declined the role, Whale cast the largely unknown character actor Boris Karloff and together with makeup designer Jack Pierce they created the most memorable monster in movie history: a towering, lumbering creature with sunken eyes, a flat head, and a jagged scar running down his forehead. Whale and Karloff made this mute, misunderstood brute, who has the brain of a madman (the most obvious of the many liberties taken with Shelley's story), the most pitiable freak of nature to stumble across the screen. Clive's Dr. Frankenstein is intense and twitchy and Dwight Frye set the standard for mad-scientist sidekicks as the wild-eyed hunchback assistant. Whale's later films, notably the spooky spoofThe Old Dark Houseand the deliriously stylized sequelThe Bride of Frankenstein, display a surer cinematic hand than seen here and add a subversive twist of black comedy, but given the restraints of early sound films, Whale breaks the film free from static stillness and adorns it with striking design and expressionist flourishes.--Sean Axmaker』
