A long overlooked and underappreciated zombie blast since it first saw the light of day, it is just so wonderful seeing it now in restored hi-def glory. Ray Lovelock and Christine Galbo star as traveling companions in the U.K. who come afoul of the zombies rising from the graves of a small town after an experimental pesticide is used on the country side. Adding to their problems is the clueless cop (Arthur Kennedy) who believes that they are responsible for the waves of violence hitting the town. Directed by Jorge Grau, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue still manages to be effective to this day, with subtle bits of social commentary peppered throughout, plus some intensely gorey scenes. All in all, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue is a pure zombie blast, and whether you're an old fan of the film or a newcomer, picking it up on this superb Blu-Ray should be a no-brainer if you're a horror/zombie fan in the least.』 (Overlooked horror classic that soars on HD!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『 In the countryside of the UK, it seems there has been a special made radioactive pesticide guaranteed to get rid of all the bugs for farmers. But unfortunately it has a serious side effect as it turns people into zombies and even brings the dead back to life to prey upon the living's flesh. A young hippie couple witnessed a horrific cannibalistic murder were accused of the crime they didn't commit as they must convince the police that it was flesh-eating cannibal like creatures that did it and they soon will find out. Thrilling and shocking yet totally brilliant Italian/Spanish Sci-fi horror that is a very criminally underrated masterpiece of the genre. One of the better "Night of the Living Dead" inspired European horror flicks and pre-dates "Dawn of the Dead" and Fulci'z "Zombie 2" years later, it's very well made and greatly acted with horrific make-up effects. The red-eyed zombies definitely inspired those creatures the audiences of today saw in both 28 Days Later and Weeks Later movies, there is some graphic gore shown in this movie including cannibalism with make-up effects from famed Italian make-up artist Gianneto De Rossi that it might upset some viewers. But it's a very smart and unique cult favorite that has been rediscovered over the years thanks to DVD and video rentals under the titles "Don't Open the Window" and "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie". This Blu-Ray offers this cult classic on a stunning high defintion transfer with awesome picture and sound that nicely remasters the movie very well. It appears to sample other horror movies, including the "closet scene" from Friday the 13th (the original 1980 version), and elements of The Shining (also from 1980). There is a fair amount of blood and gore, but not what is commonly seen in most modern horror movies. Like the classic films, it has elements that makes you scream out to the characters in the movie. How anyone could possibly rate this a 1-star movie is beyond me. I don't know the story this movie is based on but it is quite interesting story never the less. You can easily skip the first twenty minutes because nothing really happens and it's quite boring. Then a knock at the door with a girl is looking for her friend at 4 am in the morning; That might seem strange but the fact that the house the couple is staying on a is a deserted road with no other houses in what appears to be miles. She turns away and thats when the good stuff hits, well sort of. Three masked intruders do all sorts of stuff to mess with this girl and her boyfriend comes back after getting a frantic call. One thing I thought was funny was his beautiful car was destoryed and he didnt seem to care one bit about it. The three intruders disappear on and off, almost acting like ghosts and playing tricks on the couple. The movie is only an hour and twenty eight minutes (unrated edition) and it is pretty well paced but some things just dont add up. A unique part of the film is there is little speaking and it relys heavily on sounds. Expect for the girl that shows up at the door, you never see the rest of the killers faces. The chilling answer to way they did this was because they were home. I dont know if it's a real story or not, the speical features include a making of documentary. I wish they would have added a feature about where this story is based on. Overall, a good movie but alot of story holes ruin this movie from being a five star movie. In fact it's horror "fans" like this that are the reason that the horror film genre is so in the dumps. As long as blood, gore and torn limbs are what rakes in the money- thanks to the fans I just mentioned- then we will get more of the same and less TRUE scary stuff like "The Strangers", which is a shame. The film was rich in atmosphere. The acting was good, the villains were compelling and the director did a masterful job keeping the suspense taught without resorting to cliche's like things suddenly and constantly jumping out at you, hordes of insects, gore or teens having sex. I also felt that the inherent improbabilities in the story were well ironed out and made believable. They tried to leave, but couldn't. They tried to call for help, but couldn't. They tried to fight back, but couldn't find an enemy to fight. All in all I loved this movie. If you didn't, then fine. State your case clearly and intelligently and let it go at that. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favor of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chillerThem(which shares its "inspired by a true story" origin) and Michael Haneke'sFunny Games, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy (The Hills Have Eyes) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. Instead it is a two disc collection of four really good murder mystery films under the control of Warner Home Video. The purpose of these sets is to introduce people to the various genres of classic film at a low price. Unlike the Warner Archive collection, these discs are pressed DVDs, but there are no extras. First, there are two classic Humphrey Bogart films, "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep". "The Maltese Falcon" is available in deluxe form as The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition (1941&1931 versions / Satan Met a Lady). This film not only has Bogart in his prime, it has the great team of Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Here they are not so much a team as on the screen simultaneously, but they are still fun to watch. Here Bogart plays a detective that is so tough he does things like pistol whip someone with their own gun and then give the gun back to him. Nobody but Bogart could pull off this kind of toughness. "The Big Sleep" has Bogart teamed with Lauren Bacall, with Bogart playing Philip Marlowe in a well-acted film noir that is a bit confusing the first time you watch it. Things make more sense the second time around though. There were actually two versions of this film and they can be found on The Big Sleep, along with commentary comparing the two versions, if you want the extras. Dial M for Murder was a Hitchcock film from 1954 starring Grace Kelly as the cheating wife of a tennis player (Ray Milland). Milland's character learns about her affair and, rather than feeling terribly hurt about it, he is worried about losing access to his wife's money should she divorce him. He makes plans to insure that never happens. I've always loved this one and the unexpected turn it makes in the middle - Ray Milland turns out to be quite the quick thinker under pressure. This is already available as Dial M for Murder. This more deluxe versions contains two featurettes. Finally there is 1946's The Postman Always Rings Twice. John Garfield plays Frank, a drifter, who gets a job at a restaurant run by Nick and his young wife, Cora (Lana Turner). Frank and Cora fall for each other, but Cora doesn't want to give up Nick's money. The two make one bungled attempt at murder that raises the suspicion of the D.A. Their second one is also bungled. It manages to kill Nick, but it also gets them accused of murder. This is available in a more deluxe edition as The Postman Always Rings Twice, which contains a documentary on John Garfield. If you only pick up two of these TCM greatest collections make sure it is this one and TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: American Musicals (The Band Wagon / Meet Me in St. Louis / Singin' in the Rain / Easter Parade). They are the two best of the bunch.』 (TCM Finally Gets One Right) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『For once, TCM has put together a worthy boxed set. Fans of classic films and crime, are in for a real treat at a very decent price. If you already own one or two of these films, it might not be worth it, but if you don't, this is a big dose of fabulous entertainment. Perhaps the weakest film here is Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, and it's still a lot of fun. Ray Milland is cold and calculating as a former tennis pro named Tony who, unbeknownst to his wife Margo (Grace Kelly), has discovered her affair with Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings) and plans to do something about it. He blackmails an old Cambridge mate into murder, intricately planning every last detail so nothing can go wrong. As with all plans of mice and men, it goes wildly wrong, and the fun is watching Milland think on his feet afterward and improvise, finding a way to be rid of his young beauty in a different way, without anyone suspecting a thing. But no plan is ever perfect. Hitchcock wasn't really able to overcome the stagey origins of Frederick Knott's suspenseful play, but a great cast, Dimitri Tiomkin's score, and the use of color, sort of cover up the film's deficiencies, making it entertaining, if not topflight Hitchcock. John Huston's remake of Satan Met a Lady is a much better rendering of Dashiell Hammett's classic novel, The Maltese Falcon, and kept the title. It is a fine, literate translation of Hammett's detective story, with Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre all lusting after one thing; except perhaps for Astor, who may be after more. Bogart stays cool amidst this tale of moral ambiguity and greed, but Huston and Bogart let you know it's all an act when he shows Sam Spade's hands shaking. It is a cynical detective classic. It is perhaps a little too literate at times, as the viewer feels a distance from what's going on up on the screen, but nonetheless, it's an excellent film. Much of Hammett's dialog from the novel made it directly to the big screen, and coupled with Bogart's tough portrayal of Sam Spade, this film has stood the test of time and is a true screen classic. Lana Turner and John Garfield hunger for something more in Tay Garnett's glossy soap opera noir, The Postman Always Rings Twice. Based on James M. Cain's lusty potboiler, Turner is fantastic as the manipulative yet vulnerable Cora Smith and Garfield excellent as the drifter who can't get Cora or her dreams out of his blood. Turner is like a white creme, icy cold on the surface but burning hot and deep with desire underneath. Cora is a girl aware of her looks and effect on men. Since she was 14 she's had to argue with men about it. But she didn't have to argue with Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway), a much older man Cora marries for security, not love. When drifter Frank Chambers (Grafield) shows up to fill the help wanted sign at the Twin Oaks Diner Nick and Cora run, she discovers she can't live without love or passion. Cora is a smouldering vision in white when Frank first sees her, a room full of gas that only needs a spark to ignite it. Frank knows he can sell anything to anybody and begins to fan the flames when he talks Nick into getting a neon sign for the diner Cora wants. Cora has big dreams for the diner and wants to be somebody. She tries in her own way to resist what is going to happen between she and Frank but deep down knows that all the things she married Nick for and clings to are the things she really wants with Frank. Cora lets him kiss her once then stays away, working Frank into an internal frenzy of desire. After a midnight swim in the ocean they get a week alone and their fate is sealed, the gas ignited and burning out of control. It is Cora who lets Frank's lust simmer until he loves her and wants her so much nothing matters, not even what stands in the way of Cora's dreams. Garfield is excellent as a guy who knows he's signed on for a one way ride to nowhere but can't help himself, because the mere thought of sharing the ride with Cora tips the scales. There is a tricky D.A. (Leon Ames) onto them after a botched first attempt to live out Cora's dreams fails, and only a crafty defense attorney, portrayed with zeal by Hume Cronyn, gets Cora off when they finally succeed. But an insurance policy Frank didn't know about causes distrust and the results are Cora and Frank on the outs again. But they are chained to each other now. Jealousy and a blackmail attempt gone awry bring them back to the beach where they were happy. A dangerous swim to prove their trust in each other restores their love and they are happy and dreaming once again. They may be able to atone for their sins even, unless fate has other plans.... Turner gives an icy hot performance here, with many long takes between she and Garfield as they are drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Much is made of director Tay Garnett framing Turner in sexy white outfits throughout the film. In her best scene, however, and the one in which she is the most strikinginly beautiful, she is dressed in a black bathrobe. She is in the kitchen caressing a knife and agonizing over her dreams and what needs to be done to make them come true. When Frank walks in on her, her voice catches, her reluctance to follow through real. She tells Garfield in a quivering voice: "If you really loved me." Whereas Wilder's Double Indemnity was a dark noir of twisted passion and greed set in Claifornia, Garnett's The Postman Always Rings Twice uses the bright sunshine and beaches of L.A. County in the 1940's to create a soap opera noir, a shining blonde Turner and a reluctant drifter Garfield at its center. A must for Turner fans and good glossy noir to contrast the best film in this TCM package. Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep is one of the most unique adaptations of a detective novel ever brought to the screen. Watching this film is one of the true joys of being a film buff. This is extraordinary entertainment that grabs your attention quickly and keeps it until the final shot. It is exciting and engaging, and a favorite of all detective film fans. Director Howard Hawks turned Raymond Chandler's most popular story into an absolutely mesmerizing celluloid masterpiece. Raymond Chandler's complex novel was adapted for the screen by William Faulkner. We may never know for sure who committed one of the murders in this blurry crime noir, but as noted by many critics, it is so incredibly entertaining we really don't care. It is full of sharp dialog and dreamy images that leave the viewer mesmerized. The story itself moves at a terrific clip, and there is so much going on you might get lost if you blink. Humphry Bogart is Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, and from the moment he arrives to talk to General Sternwood and gets mixed up with his daughters this is a film classic. Though a young and sultry Lauren Bacall gets tangled up with Bogart in their first film together, Martha Vickers steals every scene she's in, and has you thinking about her in every scene she isn't in. Her Carmen is one of the most memorable dolls in noir history. Bacall portrays the General's sultry older daughter, Vivian, but Marlowe meets the sexy and thumb sucking younger daughter Carmen (Martha Vickers) first. She leaves an immediate impression on both the viewer and Marlowe, attempting to sit in his lap while he's standing up. The very sick General Sternwood wants him to look into a little matter involving blackmail and his two daughters. As Marlowe follows the trail of gambling debts, he finds one body after another and tries to extricate the daughters from the mess. Marlowe and Vivian have a spark that gives him incentive to get the job done, but he may not be able to head off the rollercoaster headed for the little kitten Carmen, who may turn out to have some very large claws. Dorothy Malone has a brief but sexy role as a clerk who shares more than a drink with Marlowe. Hawks filmed this as moody dream of dialog and images hard to forget. Bogart's Marlowe has his hands full trying to keep Carmen out of trouble. The sparks that begin to fly between he and Carmen's big sister, Vivian, is complicated by her involvement with some of the players for the other team. Trying to find a way to keep the fast rising body count from getting any higher, while keeping Vivian and her little sister Carmen in the clear, will take some dangerous turns for Marlowe. Bacall has never been more beautiful or inviting than when she is slumped down in the seat of Bogart's car, just waiting for him to kiss her. You have to see this film to really appreciate it. No description could ever do it justice. You'll never see anything else like it in American cinema. A true noir classic, and one of Howard Hawks' masterpieces. Here we have an unlikely sequel in Stepfather II. Unlikely because the original, while being extremely well received critically, came and went at the box office. Once on video the original started gaing steam and became a hit similarly to the original Austin Powers. So, about two years later a direct to video sequel was planned and Terry O'Quinn was courted to reprise his very complex role. They eventually got him and a sequel was made. Firstly, this is a pretty good film as far as sequels go. Of course, it requires huge leaps of faith right from the top. At the end of the original Stepfather Terry O'Quinn's character was definitively DEAD. No, not wounded, no not take off to prison, but totally and absolutely D-E-A-D. This sequel makes the wise diecision to just start with The Stepfather in mental institution with some knife wounds. No big explanation of how he survived, but there he is and he has. Much better then some convoluted soap opera explanation ala Halloween: Resurrection. Then the plot moves into familar territory in the Stepfather escaping and resuming his old tricks, the persuit of the perfect family, under the guise of a marital therapist. He courts Meg Foster(a stunning beauty whose exotic pale blue eyes limited her from getting more meaty parts). When Meg Foster's character's ex shows back up, well....well, if you've seen the original Stepfather you know the rest. Getting O'Quinn back in the title role is the main reason to see this sequel. The sequel plays up the black humor elements from the first regarding O'Quinn's Reagan era inspired perfect family ideal, and closed off-ness to sexuality of any sort. In this film when he is invited to be for some carnal knowledge he treats it more like a chore, job or duty rather then an act of passion. Hmmm, sounds like a typical conservative type.LOL. Meg Foster is the woman in question and she is a very sturdy foil for O'Quinn to play off of. She comes off interesting and understandable without seeming too much like an idiot, not noticing her finace' weird behavior. Caroline Williams(Texas Chainsaw Massacre II) plays the obligatory best friend, who also conveniently happens to be a mail carrier. Jonathan Brandis plays Meg Foster's son in one of the young actor's earlier roles. They're all solid and lend a level of realism that a sequel of this nature desperately needs. The problem with this sequel, beyond the fact that it's a sequel, comes in the form of the ending. The ending is very hurried and doesn't quite live up to the build up the first two thirds of the film promises. Sure, you get some great blood battered bride imagery, but that's about it. Joseph Ruben did a much better job of miling the suspense and thrills from his rote finale to the original Stepfather. Plus, once you've seen the first film, you know the routine and in this film, though they do throw in some nice twists(the blind neighbor is quite inventive and hysterical), we've been here and done this before. O'Quinn creates such a compelling character that he keeps you in the game if the plot doesn't. Plus, it's hard to simply just except The Stepfather being alive at the top of the film. For a few minutes the contrivance reminds you naggingly so that the first film was a masterpiece of the genre. Once O'Quinn gets rolling with his character it helps ease the pain that comes with sequel-itis, but it may not work the same way for all. Director Jeff Burr(Leatherface:Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Pumpkinhead II) keeps things stylish and similar to a Dario Argento film from the late 70's. I've listened to two commentary tracks from Jeff Burr, and he provides one for the new special edition of Stepfather II, and this one has a Leatherface tinge to it. Burr seemed to have been one of the few innocent souls working in Hollywood in the eighties. He talks, like in the case of Leatherface, about studio interference, and how some other director came in and added some slight gore scenes to his final cut. A great anecdote on the commentary is how Burr sent a VHS copy of his first cut of Stepfather II to reknowned critic Pauline Kael to see, so she wouldn't judge the film based on the final product. He says she wrote back, but doesn't go into detail on what was in the letter. This commentary track is the same one that was on the Mirmax DVD released back in 2003, as is the alternate scenes(which showcase Burr's original and far more subtle take on the suspense scenes), but comes with a brand spanking new thirty minute retro doc interviewing Burr, the producers, editor, and screenwriter. It was interesting to find out that this film actually did have a theatrical release. The producers were so anamored with the final product that they put up the dough to put it in some theaters. Then, they went as far as to make the third Stepfather film sands Terry O'Quinn(actually saw the third one first when I was twelve, it's not too good---mostly due to the lack of Terry O'Quinn). I got this DVD really cheap used. I'm not a huge fan of this sequel, but I love Terry O'Quinn's returning performance, and Burr's stylish direction, but most of all I like the black comedy that is further mined from the material. It's not campy black comedy, it doesn't take you out of the suspense, but it's more abundant in this sequel. It's worth checking out, at least renting. Make no mistake these films are not Universal's finest moments and have nothing to do with Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man or mummy films. They are from the B-movie division and are not as well known or as critically praised. I grew up on their movies when "Shock Theatre" debuted on WCAU-TV in Philly back in the 50s when I was in high school. (The first two films they showed were FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA, two of my favorites to this day.) In this collection, there were only two films -- CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN and HORROR ISLAND -- that I'd never seen before, and some of the others I hadn't seen since the 50s. For fans of Universal, this set is highly recommended. And as my title for this review indicates, I hope this is just the first of many such collections. (I'd like to think that one day there will be a complete Boris Karloff set or a complete Bela Lugosi set. I'd like to hope there will never be a complete Lon Chaney, Jr., set, however!) One thing puzzles me, though: The cover art for the inside DVD holder shows Boris Karloff from some movie in the 50s. Not only is whatever that film might be from the wrong era (the others all being from 1941-1943), but Karloff isn't even in any of the films in this set. They look and sound great. Universal has a treasure trove of films like these, and they need to get on the ball and keep these sets coming.』 (A fun set of Universal B Horror films) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This is a great set of B horror from Universal...that you previously couldn't find anywhere unless you paid some scalper who could care less about the films three times what it is was worth. The reason? Like the Ultimate Sci-Fi Collection, this was originally a Best Buy exclusive. Finally liberated from that status, these films will now be available in a general release for all to enjoy. Every film in this set is a great B horror classic and the audio and video are very good, not unrestored like public domain packs. My favorite - "Captive Wild Woman". The title has it as "Captive Wild Women" indicating it is possibly some kind of prison film, and nothing could be further from the truth. Instead it seems to be borrowing from Val Lewton's themes about monsters and horror mirroring the human condition. Plus, Milburn Stone ("Doc" from Gunsmoke) is in the film! For those of you who didn't know, Stone toiled away in B horror films for years before he got his career role on TV in Gunsmoke. The Black Cat here is from 1941, not the 1934 classic scary old house tale with Karloff and Lugosi that is already on DVD, so you need not worry about double-dips on this one. Lugosi is in it, but he is more of a supporting character at this point. Man Made Monster (1941) has Lon Chaney Jr. as the victim and Lionel Atwell as the mad scientist. I think Chaney gives one of his finest performances here - in my opinion, much better than in his "wolf man" films, and they weren't half bad. Horror Island is an OK film starring a bunch of people I never heard of, still the story is pretty good. Finally there is Night Monster (1942), another scary old house tale with Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill getting top billing yet a disappointing amount of screen time considering this. Buried in the credits you'll find Nils Asther as Agor Singh. It's a rather juicy role though Asther doesn't get much screentime. The sad part is that in the late silent era Asther had been a big star at MGM. However, his star fell far after the advent of sound films. I've got so many horror films to catch up on! This DVD set contains five rare Universal films from the 40's. The prints are clean and there some trailers, but the best reason to buy this set is because all the films included are seeing their first DVD releases! If your a Universal fan it's a great set. I will review each film as I watch them, so I will be adding to this. The first film 'The Black Cat' is a film I had never seen. When I bought the set I thought it was the 1934 classic with Karloff and Lugosi....I'm glad it wasn't as I already have that film on the Bela Lugosi collection.......anyway..... 'The Black Cat' on this set is a murder/mystery/comedy from 1941. The film stars Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi in a fun supporting character. I did like this fun film full of secret passages and things that go bump in the night. The next film 'Man Made Monster' is a very good Lon Chaney Jr. film. The Third film 'Horror Island' is a misleading title as there isn't much horror going on, on this island! It's actually a mystery/comedy film that doesn't have much comedy in it either. This is the weakest of the five films on this set. I have reviewed these films on the individual release or VHS release. Please look for those releases. The finale had a haunting quality that stuck with me. I was excited to finally get a good widescreen DVD of this Canadian-made kid's chiller starring the gifted 12-year-old Stephen Dorff. Some critics have complained that the first half is dull. I disagree-- I think they gave a realistic, though "Leave It To Beaver" style, grounding to the story, with much humor and knowing dialog. You are slowly pulled into a harrowing yarn with foot-tall goblins, a mummified walking corpse, and a majestic four-eyed Demon Lord worthy of The Great Harryhausen. The character played by Dorff is a brave little guy, assisted by his typical teen sis, and a "Harry Potter" looking buddy who digs the Satanic Rock Group "Sacrifyx-- whose members all died in a plane crash!" Oh smell shades of Lynyrd Skynyrd! You never know when an elaborate album booklet will prove useful to combat Evil! That kid poses in a floor mirror wearing a "robe" and intoning the pompously sinister screed of the album narrator, who warns that the "Old Gods" (H.P. Lovecraft-style) yearn to get back into our world and take it over. The yarn builds to an apocalyptic conclusion which spews a diabolical "Wizard of Oz" style tornado out of a backyard pit to threaten the World As We Know It. The wrap-up with Dorff hugging his "best buddies" reminded me of another great and heart-tugging curtain line, "There's no place like home!" However Glen and Terry discover a weird hole in the backyard and use a special demonic rock album to summon whatever there is from that hole, yet it does happen as they accidently unleash demons and many evil forces turning their night into hell for real as they must find a way to shut the gates to hell forever. Excellent cult 80's supernatural horror thriller from Canada became a runaway box-office hit in May of 1987 here in the US and Canada, this movie marked the debut of Blade actor Stephen Dorff as a young boy. The film does have a nice concept of how a rock album can be used to summon evil forces and satanic rituals and has marvelous special effects for it's time like the demons and many other memorable moments that are kind of graphic for a PG-13 rating like the eyeball in the hand sequence and some stabbings. This is a very HP Lovecraft kind of haunted house and occult thrill-ride that never lets go and pulls you in as it's pure fun for everyone and always been one of my favorite horror movies for years. I was probably around 10 when I saw it a number of times on the premium channels. And it stayed with me. Prior to this the only DVD available was an old out of print fullscreen release being sold used for ridiculously high prices, so I'm glad I waited for this nice clean widescreen version. Besides the nostalgia factor this film really holds up as some very nice storytelling. It was made to be family friendly, something the writer was disappointed in according to the bonus features, but that doesn't stop it from having a number of genuinely creepy moments and great scares. I'm not embarrassed to say that as a kid I used to be afraid to look at my left palm because of a particular scene. The visual effects were great for the times as well. It's hard to imagine 8 inch tall creatures posing a real threat, but look at their faces and tell me that doesn't give you shivers.
