(Best Season)
『From the highly imaginative "Dreamland" complete with the Marx Bros Mirror scene to alien baseball, Halloween Christmas style to the beginning of the UFO madness, this has got to be the best X-Files season while the Scully and Mulder team were together full force. There are no bad or even mediocre episodes in this collection. Well worth the price.』

(Progressively sillier)
『After season 3 The X-Files seemed to go down hill in story quality, but especially after season 5 the silliness of the characters and the stories has increased dramatically. Despite this criticism, this is still a great series and a good season 6. Duchovney and Anderson continue to deliver superb acting, and there are many must-see episodes.』

(Six of the best)
『Season six packs an emotional wallop unlike any other series! Especially true of "Milagro", "Field Trip", "Monday" and the myth-arc "finale", "Two Fathers"/"One Son". Also, Dreamland is a treat; Michael McKean&David Duchovny are vaudevillians par excellence.

The blend of humour&horror can be a little choppy, but this season has a weight lacking in most of the earlier seasons.
One bone to pick: Scully's truculent scepticism started to grate, although, thankfully, Mulder gave her pause to rethink this in "Field Trip".

The shift in locale to the Western U.S. also added to the show's visual and dramatic scope: episodes such as "Drive", "Dreamland" and "Arcadia" were well suited to, and enhanced by, the arid settings.

Favourite eps: "Milagro", "Monday", "Dreamland", "Field Trip" (aptly titled)&"Triangle"』

(I can understand why this season is considered to be the beginning of the end of X-Files)
『While I still enjoyed this season, there are some reasons why it wasn't as good as previous seasons:

1. Moving to California definitely changed the look of the series. It suddenly became so sunny and clear, the dimness and spookiness of Canada was gone! And it took a while to find good lighting for Scully, for most of the season she looked old.

2. Too many comedy episodes in the beginning of the season. At some point I started thinking it became some kind of parody of X-Files, not actual X-Files.

3. The main mytharc was totally finished off, and very quickly. I was very sad to see this story line go. So many years to build it and then 2 episodes and it's all over. Where do X-Files go from here?

4. Finally, I got really tired of all the flirting between Scully and Mulder. Like many, I wanted them to be together, but I didn't want to be teased. Either go all the way, or let their relationship be the way it used to before, I say.

That being said, it was still great season, just a little thin on really great episodes.

(first BAD season)
『A new fan of these series I fell in love with the show becoming addicted to it, talking about nothing but The X Files, etc. The movies was great. However the return to the show was very disappointing. I really enjoyed that once in a while there would be a "comedy" X Files episode to have some variety, but on this season they over did it. Most of this season is comedy, and some of them very cheesy comedy. Only a few episodes are serious like the good old classic X Files episodes, and even some of those "serious" episodes have some moments of cheesy comedy that turn you off.

The 2nd disappointment is something on the "Mulder/Scully" subject (don't wanna go in detail to give any spoilers). Something unexpected is happening with their partnership in the movie. It doesn't get solved in the movie which made me think it was a very smart way to make people watch this season hoping this matter was solved or at least talked about. Wrong, I'm still waiting for that conversation between the 2 of them. This season makes it seem like that moment of the movie (my fav part) never even happened.

As most fans I used to think "wouldn't it be nice if they did the show again?", but it is seasons like this that make you go "nah, just leave it the way it is".

I would definitely try to rent this season before wasting your money, unless you are a collector and you must have all the DVDs.』

『Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 12/02/2008 Run time: 820 minutes Rating: Nr』
『Following theX-Filesfeature film in the summer of 1998, "The Beginning" quickly crowbars an attempt at fitting the film into the TV chronology before it picks up plot points left dangling from the fifth-season finale, "The End" (note the guard asleep at the nuclear power plant console is named Homer!). Between arc threads are several pleasing excursions: time travel to a Bermuda Triangle boatload of Nazis ("Triangle"), further temporal escapades akin toGroundhog Day("Monday"), a demonic baby case featuring genre stalwart Bruce Campbell ("Terms of Endearment"), and Duchovny being able to play someone else via personality switching ("The Dreamland, Parts 1 and 2"). Back in the real scheme of things, Mulder chases "S.R. 819," a Senate resolution tying conspiracies together. "Two Fathers" and "One Son" indicate that the abductee experiments are intended to cure the black oil disease. The year finishes with "BioGenesis," in which we're asked to ponder, are we from Mars? A beach-buried UFO leaves Scully wondering.--Paul Tonks

(Diary of The Dead)
『I am a fan of low budget horror flicks, especially when the dead come back to life.
I enjoyed it very much.』

(Diary of the Dead DVD Review)
『I've enjoyed all of the other Mr. Romero's "Dead" films; however, this one is not good at all; I found it quite boring. The widescreen DVD has high-quality picture and sound.』

(Underrated)
『I do not know why the reviews of this movie are so mixed. In some ways I think this is Romero's best aside from "Night." The characters are engaging and thoroughly dislikable. The factor that they trigger such little compassion as they strugglenot so much to survive as to document shows the superficialities of a society overwhelmingly drawn to "reality" TV while being thoroughly detached from reality and from themselves. It is a great message about escpaism in its most superfluous form. Who really are the zombies of the film? Who is really dead? The detached characters who are stumbling automatons devoid of any connection to their own humanity?』

(Terrible, despicable, godawful, blasphemy of a zombie movie)
『This is a terrible, despicable, godawful, blasphemy of a zombie movie. This movie makes me question George Romero's sanity. This movie consists of 90% kids with cameras filming each other holding cameras, and 10% zombies. I gave this movie away after watching it once because seeing the cover ticked me off. If you already bought this movie, I recommend you use it as a coaster, a Frisbee, or just put it under a wobbly table, because that's all it's good for.』

(the best zombie movie)
『george your the best keep them coming. this makes u think that it actually will happen』
『From legendary frightmaster George A. Romero comes one of the most daring, hypnotic and absolutely vital horror films of the past decade (fangoria.com). Romero continues his influential Dead series, this time focusing on a terrified group of college film students who record the pandemic rise of flesh-eating zombies while struggling for their own survival. Intensely gruesome and relentlessly grisly fueled by the directors signature realistic special effects Diary of the Dead is must-see horror that is Romero at his finest (bloody-disgusting.com).』
『George Romero has always come up with new ways of treating his zombies, andDiary of the Deadis no exception: Romero keeps his dead fresh, with an original approach to the undying subject. This one purports to be the video record of a group of young people who are shooting a low-budget horror movie when the terror strikes: corpses begin re-animating, intent on chewing the living. Our heroes trek across Pennsylvania, encountering the staggering zombies as they go. Other pieces of video are incorporated, which gives Romero a chance at some great set-pieces, including the brilliant opening sequence, a live local-TV feed that goes horribly, horribly wrong, and a home-video tape from a family birthday party, where the party clown turns out to be a dead ringer. All of Romero'sDeadfilms are political, and this one's no exception, with a stark view of the way things are today; it doesn't offer the Hawksian heroics of the survivors inDawn of the DeadorLand of the Deadfor comfort, just a group of bickering, shocked youths. There's too much talk about the detachment of watching things through a lens, but in general this is a bracing, intelligent movie. Plus, there's some excellent splatter.--Robert Horton

(Notes from a second viewing, fifteen years later.)
『In the Mouth of Madness (John Carpenter, 1995)

I originally saw In the Mouth of Madness on opening weekend, in the theater, for full price. I hadn't liked a John Carpenter film since They Live, but with the Lovecraft allusions and overtly literary plot, I had to check it out. I was, to say the least, mildly disappointed. For the past fifteen years, though, people I generally trust have been telling me how awesome this movie is, so I decided I'd give it a second shot. And while I liked it better than I remembered it the second time around, I still don't think it's up to the level of Carpenter's earlier movies.

John Trent (Sam Neill) is an insurance investigator, and a very nasty one indeed, as we see in the opening scene. Nasty, yes, but good at his job. Thus, when mega-selling horror writer Sutter Kane (Jurgen Prochnow) goes missing, his publisher, Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston), hires Trent to go looking for him. With one condition: Trent has to take along Harglow's assistant, Linda Styles (Julie Carmen in her last, to date, major role). Trent becomes convinced that Hobb's End, the fictional town the features in many of Kane's books, is a real place somewhere in rural New Hampshire, and he and Styles set off to find it. They do, but they find out it's a very, very weird place...

There's always been an element of cheesiness to John Carpenter's special effects; think about the whirling tube of slime in Prince of Darkness, for example. (Hell, his most famous creation is a big guy in a sheet and a William Shatner mask.) But there's a fine line between judicious use of cheese and going over the top. The climax of this movie hits all the highs of the latter, with the added problem that the effects used in most of those scenes scraped the bottom of the budget barrel. You can see where they'd probably be cool with more money, or better technology, or maybe a better cinematographer (imagine what Nicholas Musuraca, from the Val Lewton stable, would've done with it). But that's not what we got. As well, the over-the-top-ness, for lack of a better term, of Carpenter's characterization grates here. It sometimes does in earlier films as well (I still make an I'm-sucking-on-a-lemon face during the opening of Prince of Darkness, when Jameson Parker and Lisa Blount go from introduction to bed in about thirty seconds of screen time), but it's all about Sam Neill's overacting. Since he's the main character here, you can see where that might be a problem. I understand the role was written that way; that makes it no less annoying.

Still, I can't hate the movie. Lovecraft references abound, and the concept of the thing is so startling. There are subtle touches that evoke the artistry Carpenter showed on earlier movies ("Did I ever tell you my favorite color is blue?" doesn't have quite the impact until you've seen the movie multiple times and picked up on one of those subtleties). And Carpenter's intent here was to make a B movie, more so than it was with earlier projects. And so I'm still of two minds; it's watchable, but it's not up to Carpenter standards. **½』

(Lovecraft Still Can Work)
『Right away it was obviously a lovecraft/poe rip off. But it seemed to work in typical John Carpenter style. For those of you familiar with John Carpenter this will be a great description as it is a better carpenter than not. Enjoy!』

(Huge Disappointment)
『I will never forget this film nor forgive the film's advertising for leading me on. Both the title and the add campaign seemed to point to this film being the end-product of an interesting cycle. The cycle began with H.P. Lovecraft's novella "At The Mountains of Madness" which he himself considered to be his favorite thing he ever wrote. In 1949, inspired by Lovecraft's tale, James Campbell wrote the story "Who Goes There" which was turned into the famous 1951 Oscar winning horror film "The Thing". In the 1980s, John Carpenter executed his fantastic remake of "The Thing" in which the monster is more closely related both the the Chameleon of "Who Goes There?" and Lovecraft's amorphous Shoggoths. From the name of the film and the scene in the coming attraction which was identical to one in "At The Mountains of Madness", I thought the film "In The Mouth of Madness" would depict the tale which started the whole cycle. Instead, the story was as un-Lovecraftian as you could want. Take my advice and give this one a miss unless you want to see another Stephen King or Dean Koontz bloodbath.

The story follows an author who suddenly finds himself in the horror world of his own fiction. It turns out that his villain has used the books to invoke a kind of limbo reality and is attempting to trade places with his creator. He is also using the author's books to cause readers to turn into psychotic zombies. In the end, the author is locked up in a sanitarium where he becomes the only person in the world to survive a worldwide outbreak of killer zombies "from hell".

The libral use of Lovecraftian names (There is a Pickman House B&B) only makes the film more painful to watch if you are a dedicated Lovecraftian. Again the tale is more of shock and awe horror which pours so prolifically from the pen of the likes of Stephen King (of course if you like Stephen King, this film is definitely up your alley). I should note that I like Stephen King's earlier works which were more like, but not direct copies of, the Lovecraftian circle ( the anthologies "Night Shift" and "Skeleton Crew", in my opinion, contain his best work). They relied less on gore and foul language (though it was always there) and more on the creation of an atmosphere of real horror.

This film also sealed my opinion that John Carpenter has lost his ability to make a decent horror film. The last of his films that I liked was "Prince of Darkness" but even that was not as good as his classics like "Escape From New York", "The Thing" or "Big Trouble In Little China". I also resented his comments in an early interview on the Sci Fi Channel in which he blamed us, the fans, for the lack of good horror films at the time.』

(Part 3 of John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy")
『According to John Carpenter, "In the Mouth of Madness" is the capstone of his "Apocalypse Trilogy" - Part 1 begun in 1981 with his masterful reinvention of 50's B horror classic "The Thing," where a long-frozen, world-conquering alien "force" is unthawed in Antarctica, with potentially global-annihilative results.

Part 2 according to Carpenter came six years later, with his "heady, post-graduate-minded Einsteinian horror classic," - PRINCE OF DARKNESS, a wonderfully inventive, thoughtful, if not entirely "logical" (well, isn't that the point of the "horror" genre anyway? "Abandon all logic, all haven, all hope for salvation ... Ye who [foolishly] enter here!"). In "Prince," Carpenter once again designs a "modern" world, not unlike "The Thing," only set in sunny, mostly upscale California, with a team of university physicists, radiologists, mathematicians, linguistics scholars, philosophers and a priest (underplayed brilliantly, as usual, by the incomparable, late Donald Pleasance) - pitted against a "secret which can no longer be kept" - namely, "Satan's son," trapped for over 7 million years inside of a weird, metallic cistern, which, creepily enough, "can only be opened from the inside." Triggered by a super nova perhaps (we're never entirely sure), Satan's son, having been buried in the Middle East long ago after his father was somehow, "banished to the darkside," is now awakening, and proceeds to slice, dice, and "water gun" its way through the team of stalwart scientists. Here again we see shades of "The Thing," with the scientists on the short end of the "magic wand" to repel it.

Now enter Part 3 - "In the Mouth of Madness" - the FINALE! Because the end is TRULY nigh. Whereas in parts 1 and 2, the "unspeakable beast" only wreaked "local havoc" (with major caveats), NOW we are, as a race - WHOLLY DAMNED!! And Carpenter makes no ambiguity of our fate. As John Trent (Sam Neill) muses ruefully from the sanctum of his padded cell to his pychiatrist (David Warner): "Every species can smell its own extinction. The last ones left won't have a pretty time of it. In ten years, maybe less, humanity will be nothing more than a bedtime story to 'them,' a myth they tell to their children..."

"ITMOM" is a difficult film in that so much of it is ... ostensibly random, "diaboli dictu;" many of the scenes underline incredulity, and the plot is ostensibly, almost irrelevant. What IS relevant is that the world is going to hell, and everyone who reads "Sutter Cane" (a not-so-subtle play on "Stephen King") SPEEDS along the return of "nameless, shambling things; The Old Ones" ala H.P. Lovecraft.

Carpenter piles on "the works" without worry of logic or storytelling coherence, because - as we're told - "reality isn't what it used to be anymore." It sure isn't. As Trent is on a bus back to Manhattan, Sutter Cane mysteriously appears in the seat next to him, and - because Cane is "God" now (self prescribed) - it is axiomatic that he can do anything. So he says to Trent, "Did I ever tell you that my favorite color is blue?" Cut to the next scene, where Trent wakes up, and the entire bus and passengers are gelled in a blue filter. Naturally, Trent screams and is awakened by his fellow passengers, who try to comfort him, "Hey mister, it's okay. You just had a bad dream."

Lots of clever tropes infuse "Madness" throughout, although this 3rd installment, by DESIGN, is THE LEAST easy to take of the 3 "apocalypses." Nevertheless, the brilliance of Sam Neill (remember him as grownup Damien from "Omen 3?") more than carries this finale. In fact, "In the Mouth of Madness," or so I have discovered for my own viewing purposes, has a FAR GREATER appeal to me NOW, on DVD, than when I first saw this film back in 1993 at the Theatre. Dark spirits only know why?

But it can't be coincidence that Carpenter laid out his trilogy - very numerologically NEATLY so. Every film, from "The Thing" to "Madness," was made 6 years apart (1981, 1987, 1993) - 666! Or, more correctly, 66... unless Carpenter's oevre up until "The Thing" might be considered his "first 6." Another trope. Another mystery. Another thing to make us go, "hmmmmmm ...".

But to be certain, as Sutter Cane (well rendered by Jurgen Prochnow) tells Trent, "My first books were something. But this next one is going to drive the whole world ABSOLUTELY MAD!" And the addition of late cinematic maven Charlton Heston as Arcane Publisher Jason Harglow, is revealing. Remember Heston's earlier career when he was in such apocalyptic roles as "The Planet of the Apes" could inspire? Coincidence here? In Carpenter's able horror-craft hands, we would do well not to question "The Master."

This one is for PURE HORROR ENJOYMENT strictly! Abandon ALL logic. The scientists and wonks from Parts 1 and 2 are probably all dead by now anyway. "Do YOU read Sutter Cane?"』

(In the Mouth of Badness)
『The 1990's brought about one of John Carpenter's attempts to return to horror with "In the Mouth of Madness", a supernatural fantasy movie that aims to shock the viewer on a psychological level. If this movie gave you chills, turn down your air conditioner.

In the Mouth of Madness tells the tale of an insurance fraud investigator who is hired by a publishing company to find a missing horror author, Sutter Cane. In his search, he is ultimately lead to a fictional town in which his surroundings are dictated by Sutter Cane's writings.

A number of previous reviewers have really hit the nail on the head here, In the Mouth of Madness is very much like an extended episode of the Twilight Zone. As a matter of fact, there was indeed a first season episode of the Twilight Zone entitled "A World all His Own" in which a writer's works materialized into reality, although rest assured there was more entertainment in that twenty minute episode than there is to be had in this entire ninety minute ordeal.

In the Mouth of Madness just isn't memorable. The storyline seems interesting at a glance, but on the screen it is often confusing and is unable to maintain a consistent level of excitement. At the very least, this is a great example of why good acting alone is rarely enough to make a movie work. And to think this is from the same guy who gave us timeless classics like Halloween, The Thing, and to a lesser degree The Fog? Jeez, and people say Tobe Hooper turned into a hack job.』

『A best-selling author's newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When the author inexplicably vanishes a special investigator hired to track him down crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from which there is no escape. Directed by horror legend John Carpenter (Vampires).Running Time: 95 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/THRILLERS UPC: 794043490729』
『The mind-bending worlds of author H.P. Lovecraft have long interested horror directors, but the films have rarely successfully captured his nightmarish mix of madness and mythology. John Carpenter'sIn the Mouth of Madnessis not directly based on Lovecraft's work, but screenwriter Michael De Luca draws his inspiration from Lovecraft's Cthulu mythology and then adds his own ingenious twists. John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator recently fitted for a straightjacket, tells his story to a psychiatrist. Hired to track down the missing pop-horror phenomena Sutter Cane, a Stephen King-like author whose fans are literally made for his books, Trent finds the supposedly fictional Hobb's End. He watches the town collapse into madness, murder, and monstrous transformations: the fantastic horrors of Cane's novels played out in front of his eyes. "Reality isn't what it used to be," deadpans one zombielike townsperson. In fact, it is how Cane writes it--but is he Devil, dark oracle, or simply a preacher in the service of an evil that grows stronger with every soul his books convert? The script never quite gets a grip on the blurry relationship between fact and fiction, but those details fade in the face of Carpenter's demented imagery, shiver-inducing twists, and dark wit. It's more eerie mind game than straight-out horror, a portrait of a world gone mad, and Carpenter relishes every hallucinatory moment.--Sean Axmaker

(Not without a fight)
『This movie is just a fun kickass horror/ action movie on par or maybe even better than the original. If your a fan of boring lame ass cliché horror movies that have teeny boppers running around getting picked off by some random masked idiot that you've seen a 1000 times before than this movie isn't for you.
On the other hand if you like wild imaginative and fun horror movies similar to movies like Evil Dead 2 than this is the movie for you. The characters in this movie aren't your typical horror movie idiots just running around waiting to die, no they actually make weapons and fight back. They know they're fighting a loosing battle and they know they'll probably die but not without a fight.』

(The Ball Is Back)
『Phantasm 2, it is finally, after all of these years on DVD. I have waited for this moment for a long time
Made in 88' Mike and Reggie are back and so is the tall man. Mike and Reggie set out to find the tall man and try and stop him ounce and for all. The tall man took Mikes family and his brother but he wont let the tall man take him. The tall man just goes through towns taking all of the bodies and turning them into those trolls.
I think this one is scarier than the first one. There are more evil creepy people on the tall mans side in this one then in the fist one. There are the two funeral guys " I think they are twins but im not sure" You see more of the flying ball in this one. There is also, I call him the gas man, on the tall mans side. Most of the time I like the first movies more than the second. But I think that this one is just a little better than the first. You should pick this one up and see if you like this one better than the first. Pick it up at amazon.』

(Phantasm II)
『Even though Michael Baldwin was not cast to play the role of Michael (James LeGros was cast to play Michael), this was my favorite of the Phantasm sequels. I liked the homemade flamethrower and the four-barreled shotgun. I also liked the fact that Michael and Liz had a psychic link to the Tall Man. This plot line was abandoned in Phantasm III and IV. In my opinion it was a big mistake to do so, because the Michael-Liz connection had great possibilities. This movie is a must own for any Phantasm fan.』

(FINALY..... It's about time!)
『We've waited over a decade for this to finally be available on DVD and it's finally here. The first sequal to the excellent original. Some people disregard this as a sequal because A Michael Baldwin didn't play Mike in this one, but I love it. Out of all 4 of the films, THIS is the one that has the best ending where the Tall Man pops up at the end after Mike says, "It's Only A Dream" and the Tall Man replies, "No, it's not!!".』

(Better than the 1st movie!)
『Our of the Phantasm series, this is actually my favorite.
This movie compares to the way Evil Dead II continued it's
series. A bigger budget, a good update to the story and
new actors in the mix.
The story continues from part one and explains what happened to Michael
after he was pulled through the bedroom mirror at the end of the
first film.
Due to a new actor being played for Michael's part, the
end of part one was re-filmed to include the new actor (James Le Gros)
as well as an older Reggie (stilled played by the great Reggie Bannister).
This film was made ten years after the original so the small adjustments
were needed to continue the series.
Even without the original actor who played Michael back in 1978(Michael Baldwin)
the film still does a great job of moving on.
The real stars of the movie will always be The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) and The Spheres.
They're back both bigger and badder than the first film.
Wait till you see what the Gold Sphere can do!
If you enjoyed the first film then you must continue the series and watch part II,III and IV.
A great cult film which was a big part of the 80's VHS cult films being passed around at the time.
Add it to you DVD collection if you can.』

『The Tall Man is back with a vengeance in Phantasm II, the second chapter in the cult classic Phantasm series! Released after seven years in a mental hospital, Mike convinces his old pal Reggie to join forces with him to hunt down and destroy The Tall Man once and for all. Mike’s visions lead the two to a quiet little town where a horde of flying killer balls aim to slice and dice their gruesome way through each of them. Exploding with special effects, unparalleled thrills, horror and suspense, Phantasm II climaxes with a blood-curdling conclusion that you have to seeto believe.』

(The Best Scary Movie)
『If you like to be scared, then you will love this movie. I suggest watching it without a pause, and probably best not to eat. Just sit back and get into the movie and it will take you for an exciting ride.』

(Could have been better, but could have been so much worse.)
『The Strangers (Bryan Bertino, 2008)

I know it's not a rational thing to consider where The Strangers is concerned, given that the movie was written in the early 2000s (according to IMDB, it was written two years before the release of Ils, to which it is often compared; that would put the writing date at 2003), but I kept thinking to myself that this is basically a remake of Funny Games that was released in the same year as Haneke remade his own movie for an American audience. Yes, there are some surface differences between the movies (and I do mean surface, e.g. the terrorists in this movie wear masks, where Haneke's don't), but the movie gives so many nods to Funny Games that it can't be a coincidence. I should probably give Bertino props for the subtlety of some of those nods (for example, the use of dissonant music that doesn't fit with the rest of the soundtrack; Haneke drops Boredoms into the main title of his 1998 flick, while Bertino tosses in a wonderful bit of Joanna Newsom), but it kept bringing home the similarity underlying the two movies. I can't imagine either Bertino or Haneke knew they would be releasing their two films so closely together, and it's not like this sort of Hollywood anti-magic doesn't happen on a regular basis (think Red Planet and Mission to Mars being released a month or so apart in 2000, for example), but the whole time I was watching this movie, fairly or not, I was comparing it not to Ils, but to the 1998 version of Funny Games. (I haven't seen Haneke's 2008 remake yet.)

If you've seen Funny Games, the plot of this flick will be very familiar to you; a couple, James (Underworld's Scott Speedman) and Kristen (The Lord of the Rings' Liv Tyler), are in their remote vacation house when they are terrorized by a band of thugs (supermodel Gemma Ward, Glory Road's Kip Weeks, and Dirty Sexy Money's Laura Margolis). The rules of this game seem simple enough: get out of the house or die.

It's not a bad movie, especially the first half; Bertino understands, as few American directors in the Hollywood machine do, that atmosphere and character are two of the key components you need to work with if you're going to scare the living daylights out of your audience. And the first half of this movie does achieve fat stacks of scary, as the terrorists don't actually do anything other than stuff that can still be (kind of) construed as harmless. (This is the major way in which the movie does remind me of Ils; that's one of those movies where I was wondering whether anything was actually going to happen right up until it did.) Once the terrorists ratchet up the terror, however, Bertino himself seems to lose his way, and the movie drives straight into cliché territory on one too many occasions. In the film's defense, Bertino does know how to take those clichés and make them effective in the scope of his film. Yes, every horror movie has that scene with the killer just suddenly appearing in the background without the characters noticing, and the disappearing again, but I haven't seen it done this effectively in a while. And I give Bertino major points for the terrorists' answer to Kristen's repeated "why are you here?" imprecation. (If you don't know the answer yet, I won't spoil it for you, but I think it's the worst-kept secret about this movie.) Yes, it's another of the movie's possibly-unconscious nods to Funny Games, but it still hasn't been used enough to not have power.

A couple more deviations from the norm and this could have been one of the best horror movies of the decade. As it is, it's still worth checking out, but it's ultimately empty calories, especially if you're an aficionado of this kind of film. **½

(Leave your lights on....)
『"Based on true events", this film will keep you awake. There is nothing supernatural here...just a gruesome and taunting murder, and that is what is so scary about it. The masks were brilliant. I slept with the lights on for days.』

(Modern Horror Film in the Classic Style)
『The Strangers reminds me of the basic horror movie, and that's a good thing. Think of the original Halloween from 1979. Imagine 2 people intending to enjoy a romantic evening in a home alone, far from civilization in the countryside. Now add a marraige proposal gone wrong, and well, neighbors who would prefer you not be around. With the premise of a simple home, this film weaves in classic scary elements. It appears to sample other horror movies, including the "closet scene" from Friday the 13th (the original 1980 version), and elements of The Shining (also from 1980). There is a fair amount of blood and gore, but not what is commonly seen in most modern horror movies. Like the classic films, it has elements that makes you scream out to the characters in the movie. How anyone could possibly rate this a 1-star movie is beyond me. My young friend jumped on multiple occasions, so if you want to be scared, watch this film.』

(A very strange film indeed)

『Inspired by true events, this heart pounding, nail-biting frightener mercilessly explores our most universal fears, where simply opening the door to a stranger leads to a grueling night of terror one could never imagine. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star in this relentless suspense thriller that will keep you up at night and make you never want to answer the door again!』
『A lean, briskly paced and exceptionally creepy thriller,The Strangersearns its scares the old-fashioned way: through atmosphere, sound design, and a simple yet undeniably upsetting central premise that allows for maximum tension throughout its running time. Attractive young lovers Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are already having a bad day--she's turned down his marriage proposal--before a knock on the door in the middle of the night announces a full-fledged siege on their remote vacation home by a trio of masked assailants. The film's first third delivers the most consistent shivers as the visitors make their presence and intentions known to Tyler; the second half grows more frantic and bloody before a gruesome finale that may leave viewers either rattled to their core or bothered by its empty nihilism. Speedman is fine as the downtrodden male lead (who's seen tucking into a carton of ice cream after being rejected), but it's Tyler who impresses the most by shouldering the lion's share of the terror. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favor of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chillerThem(which shares its "inspired by a true story" origin) and Michael Haneke'sFunny Games, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy (The Hills Have Eyes) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. On a completely unrelated note, LP fanatics should appreciate how both the film's heroes and villains share an affinity for folk and country music on vinyl. --Paul Gaita

(mixed feelings)
『I enjoyed watching this movie, but it felt a little undefined. The movie started out as a psychological thriller and turned into a heartfelt drama near the end. The Hollywood cliche horror movie incidents cheapened the heartfelt effect for me, though. There is only one or two scenes that might be considered gory by some, and certainly are no worse than something you might see in a movie like "The Grudge." The plot: A woman named Laura, who grew up in an orphanage, comes back one day to buy the place and live there with her husband and adopted son. Her son, Simon, keeps adding to his imaginary friends collection; Laura is disturbed by this, but does not believe his friends are real, until one day when Simon mentions to Laura that one of his friends told him he is adopted. Things escalate when a creepy social worker lady stops by to visit with Laura about Simon and shows concern that Laura wants to re-open the orphanage. The rest of the movie is spent searching for Simon, who vanishes during a masked ball. The ending would be tear-jerking, if you weren't so confused by that point of the movie's genre. It's supposed to be a thriller, right? I still like the movie for its oddness and because it is a lot better than many movies I have watched. There are a few scenes that made me jump, but mostly it was a drama regarding losing a child. There is a horrible (meaning good) plot twist that I didn't see coming near the end, so it is a movie worth viewing if you like to have your mind played with.』

(SPANISH?!?!?)
『This movie is in Spanish and can be ordered in no other language - as I found out too late. I did learn a valuable lesson, tho...always scroll down and look at "language" in the film's description and you will learn which language it is in. Bummer, but my fault for not reading the fine print. Betcha I don't make that mistake again!!』

(El Orfanato)
『I had high expectations for this movie, and I for one was not disappointed. I had previously seen the "Devils Backbone" and was not particularly impressed, though I'm willing to give it another watch after seeing Guillermo Del Toros other movies. But I am glad that I still chose to see this film. The film built up tension and gave me real chills unlike the majority of American horror films that I have seen. And unlike some other petty reviewers, I enjoy and appreciate films with subtitles.』

(Why not Spanish?)
『HEY AMERICAN PEOPLE !!! I am a brasilian man and live in Brasil, and here we speak Portuguese. I like a lot films in English (it is a very very beautiful language!) and we have to read the subtitles in Portuguese, because brasilian people generally has a poor school education (President Lula and the others before him are and were most interested in steal public money for themselves instead of work for the people). To tell the truth a lot of brasilian people doesn't have the capacity to read the subtitles, so they listen to the movie in Portuguese. I think a movie has to be listened in its ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, so you that speak English please respect the others languages!
I would like to answer why just few blu-rays made in USA (2001, Heat) have SUBTITLES in Portuguese. I WOULD BY much more blu-ray in Amazon if ALL OF THEM were released with SUBTITLES in PORTUGUESE and not only in Spanish.
Brasil is the biggest country of America Latina and one of the greatest world's market for movies !!! PLEASE PUT SUBTITLES IN PORTUGUESE and SPANISH IN ALL BLU_RAYS made in USA!!!. BRASIL, URUGUAI, ARGENTINA, CHILE and the others will be happy and Amazon and others stores will sell much more blu-rays !!!』

(THE ORPHANAGE)
『This movie is totally in SPANISH.

Any noise, conversations and/or music will be heard only in SPANISH. FYI. The closed captioning only can be viewed in English. YOU WILL HEAR ONLY SPANISH AND NO OTHER CHOICE OF LANGUAGE.

NO COMPRA ---- AKA DO NOT PURCHASE, IF SEEKING AN ENGLISH SPEAKING DVD!!』

『Academy-Award nominated filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth) presents The Orphanage, a chilling ghost story about a woman who discovers dark and horrific secrets hidden within her cherished childhood home and her desperate attempt to rescue her family from the nightmare into which she unwittingly led them.』
『It's only his first film, but Spain’s Juan Antonio Bayona has already figured out the secret to a successful supernatural thriller: emphasize character over special effects. Like Walter Salles'sDark Waterand Alejandro Amenábar'sThe Others,The Orphanagepivots on a pretty woman and an unusual child. When her old orphanage goes on the market, Laura (Belén Rueda, Amenábar'sThe Sea Inside) and Carlos (Fernando Cayo) settle in with their son, Simón (Roger Príncep). Once acclimated to the remote seaside surroundings, they plan to re-open it as a home for special-needs children. Meanwhile, their seven-year-old doesn't know he's adopted or that he has a life-threatening illness. He does, however, have a lot of imaginary playmates. When Simón disappears without a trace, his parents contact the police, but to no avail. Because Laura has been hearing odd noises and having strange visions, they proceed to consult a medium. Aurora (Geraldine Chaplin, speaking perfect Spanish) is convinced they aren't alone. Carlos has his doubts, but Lauramakes like a detective and revisits her childhood--through photographs, home movies, and exploration of the spooky stone manor--to determine who or what abducted her son. Produced and presented by Guillermo Del Toro,The Orphanageis less fanciful than his works, though it does bear a vague resemblance to the ghostlyDevil's Backbone. There are a few gory make-up effects, but Bayona mostly preys on our fear of the unknown to craft a first-rate fright fest.--Kathleen C. Fennessy

(Great movie)
『DVD arrived in excellent condition. Action packed movie does not disappoint. Great actors, korean and japanese. I loved this movie!』

(better then the anime)
『The live action version of this movie thankfully adds a longer storyline. This movie is just as bloody as the anime, but has some wonderful use of color in many scenes. The acting was good as well as the fight scenes. All in all, I thought it was a very good movie, especially for those who liked the anime version.』

(The Last Bad Vampire Movie)
『Talking about Suckers! (Not the Vampire Kind). I am one for falling for the nice tittle. Silly fight scenes, bad Acting and ridiculous specials effects make this Movie really terrifying to seat thru. Save yourself 4 bucks, and go watch reruns of True Blood until the next season starts.』

(BLOOD, reigns...rains.)
『A fabulous film with great effects, stunning visuals awesome fight scenes and plenty of blood...spilled.』

(The not-really-last "vampire" who is really a half-human, half-zombie demon)
『WARNING: This review contains some things that could be seen as spoilers for a movie that I do not recommend wasting your time to see. I have tried to leave out some of the details, but many of the details of the spoilers are the reason this movie is so bad.

I was very intrigued when I heard that this was an anime movie involving a vampire. What an interesting combination! However, after watching this movie, I am amazed to find so many positive reviews here at Amazon. I wonder if many people are basing their rating on the previous movie that this is based on (or is there a comic)? I have not seen that movie, so this is not to be seen as a judgment of that, or anime, or anything other than THIS particular movie. While I can appreciate that fans may enjoy this movie, I think that it is important to make a movie interesting to those who may not already be familiar with the previous movie(s) and any sequel or prequel.

I think that this movie was absolutely terrible. I usually have no trouble getting into the world created by a movie, but I wasn't able to do that with this movie, I was aware that I was watching a movie the whole time. The characters were blatantly 2 dimensional, and I was not convinced to feel interested in what happened to any of them. Even from the beginning of the movie where there was a written background description, it became evident that the characters would be very shallow and black&white. This movie was such a disappointment and a waste of time. The ONLY reason I would be interested in watching something relevant is to try to understand the story as the original author had intended, because I feel certain that this is NOT it.

There was a schizophrenic confusion about vampires and demons - Saya is fighting the demons, and it seems that she is the "last" vampire referred to in the title, because she is drinking something from a bottle that looks like it could be blood. But this is never explained, just implied. Then it turns out that she is a half-demon and half human, and I was completely confused by this. How is she the "last" vampire when there are clearly loads of demons, and she is related to them? If demons and vampires are the same thing, and if they had just been consistent about the names - demon OR vampire, this would have been much less confusing, even though the title the "last" vampire still doesn't make sense. But then, maybe ambiguity was what they needed to cover up for the "Shocking Surprise". The canned plot surprise with Saya and Onigen was ridiculous, I jokingly predicted it when they first referred to Onigen as "she" and I was pretty disgusted at the predictability when that was actually what they chose to do. I also predicted that after Alice reminded Saya that no matter what she was human, that that would come back at the end and save her somehow - but I was wrong about that, and we were left hanging and wondering where the real ending was.

Also, it didn't make any sense to me why there were both the elder, Saya's guardian/teacher who was killed by Onigen's henchman, and Saya's father, who was killed by Onigen. It would have made more sense to combine those two characters instead of having two way too similar (oversimplified?) stories, and then focus on making the rest of the plot make some sense, which this movie so desperately needed.

The General's daughter, Alice, was whiny and a wimp, not very likeable at all, and I wondered why anyone would want to save her, and why she was even in the story. The Alice in Wonderland references could have been interesting, but they were just confusing and didn't add to the story, it just seemed like she was named Alice so that they could include irrelevant references. There was very little bonding between the two female characters until the end of the movie, and I kept wondering why Saya would have gone through such great efforts to protect Alice. And how did Alice know what to do when Saya was hurt and passed out? Most people might think of CPR in that situation, where did she get the idea to give her blood? Yet another reason I was unable to immerse myself into the movie because it was so unbelievable.

The action scenes were very repetitive. The stop-go filming style was interesting at first, but then it was repeated so much, so many times throughout the movie, that it became boring. Particularly in the crevasse scene, there is some REALLY bad CG that looks like a video game from the mid 1990s.

I really want to give this movie more than one star, but I can't seem to justify it. There were bits that had interesting scenery, and the overall feel of the movie was that it was a high budget movie. I considered giving this movie a gratuitous bonus star, because there were certain minor parts about the character of Saya that I found interesting, and the costumes were interesting, particularly those of Saya and Onigen, but that wasn't really enough to justify another star. The part that makes me sad is that I see the potential for this to have been a really good movie, but it would take a LOT of work to get there.

You know what this movie really made me think of? It's like a game where kids pick some names of things out of a hat and quickly make an impromptu story out of them. The author(s) chose tags that said: anime heroine, vampire, "Alice in Wonderland", the Vietnam War, action from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", a "you killed my father, prepare to die" vendetta, a "Luke, I am your father" type reveal, zombie demons who are able to disguise themselves as humans, etc.

I left this movie (thankfully a DVD, not in the theater!) wondering what I was missing, but not really interested in watching more to find out. It was confusing - were the demons also vampires? Where did they come from? Why was Onigen considered SO badass, just because she killed Saya's father? Why did she kill Saya's father? What the heck happened to the girls in the trippy part at the end, and where was Saya? Did I REALLY care? No, not really. Not really.

『The deadliest assassin to stand the test of time. From a Producer ofHeroandCrouching Tiger, Hidden DragoncomesBlood: The Last Vampire, based on the cult hit anime series. Demons have infested Earth. And only one warrior stands between the dark and the light: Saya, a half-human, half-vampire samurai who preys on those who feast on human blood. Joining forces with the shadowy society known as the Council, Saya is dispatched to an American military base, where an intense series of swordfights leads her to the deadliest vampire of all. And now after 400 years, Saya's greatest hunt is about to begin.』

(Extremely Poor Picture Quality)
『As has been pointed out by some others this is NOT a BluRay disc that even comes close to anything approaching HD quality.

On my 55" HD it looked like an SD TV broadcast;
This is an excellent movie but I wouldn't have wasted my money on this low quality BD if I had known how disappointing the image quality was going to be.

(Excellent movie, but beware, not HD.)
『I purchased this movie on Blu-ray assuming it would be 1080p, but I was mistaken. It is simply DVD quality. Save yourself the trouble and purchase it on DVD. I do however, love the movie content which is why I purchased it in the first place!』

(The transfer is not the problem, the actual movie looks like that!)
『To the people that say the video quality is poor, it was pretty well known that they used inexpensive DV cams to film the movie which gave it it's gritty look. The last scene of the movie was the only part that was filmed later using 35mm cameras and you can tell the difference because it looks very clear and detailed in contrast. The transfer is just fine and is the highest quality transfer you're going to get of this movie. The film looked like this in the theater people!』

(The end is extremely nigh)
『First the blu-ray. The picture is hard to judge. On one hand it looks terrible on the other that's the way it was meant to. It was shot in standard def to look blurry, soft, hazy and undetailed. point is when Jim wakes up nothing is the same, its all out of focus. When things turn more hopeful at the end it was shot in 35mm film which looks a lot better. I have no problems with the transfer as it reproduces the artistic intent. Audio is very good but not demo quality. Extras are great the audio commentary is my favorite, the deleted scenes/pure rage featurette are also very good. There is also animated storyboards, still galleries, a music video, 2 trailers for 28 days later and one for 28 weeks later.

Now the movie. I found 28 days later to be a very well written and made film. It is a very suspenseful viral outbreak film. 28 days later begins with a infected monkey biting and infecting a human rights activist from there the infection spread like wildfire. fast forward 28 days Jim wakes up in a hospital and things are not right. London is eerily empty when night falls things get worse. 28 days later is a study of how people behave under extreme circumstances. People lose much of who they are as they struggle to survive. Isolation and a air of hopelessness pushes some to madness.』

(Blu-ray Version Visually Awful)
『This is a great movie, but it is irresponsible to market this at 1080 lines of resolution when it looks so terrible at that resolution. It's okay if you watch it at, say, twice or more of the optimal viewing distance from your set. That is about eleven feet for a 42"-diagonal set, at 1080 lines. If you can't get that far away, you could incur permanent psychological damage from the bad video on this thing, you'll hate the film if you haven't seen it before, and you'll probably want to - and should - burn the disc so it can't hurt anyone else.』
『Hailed as the most frightening film since The Exorcist, acclaimed Director Danny Boyle's visionary take on zombie horror "isn't just scary…it's absolutely terrifying" (Access Hollywood).

An infirmary patient awakens from a coma to an empty room…in a vacant hospital…in a deserted city. A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. Now a handful of survivors must fight to stay alive, unaware that the worst is yet to come…』
『The director/producer team that createdTrainspottingturn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation.28 Days Lateris basically an updated version ofThe Omega Manand other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere.28 Days Later'sportrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland (The Beach)--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (The General, Gangs of New York) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, The Others).--Bret Fetzer

(BOOOOOOY!!!!!)
『Phantasm, the first in four scary sequels. This is a really good scary movie to watch by yourself in the dark. I was eight years old when I first saw this movie and it scared the crap out of me. But I still love it.
Made in 79' The movie is about two brothers Mike and Jodi that live alone because there parents were killed. Strange things happen at the Morning Side Cemetery. Bodies come up missing and there is one guy that is taking them and turning them into little demons. The person behind it all. The Tall Man aka Angus Scrimm.
This is a real good underated movie. Check this movie out and if you like it. look for the other sequels that go with this movie. They are just as good as the first. Pick it up at amazon』

(A Classic)
『Becoming a "classic" horror movie is very difficult. Mainly because each generation becomes more desensitized to violence, and more used to horror conventions. As such, they come to expect the gore and monster jumping out of nowhere tactics. This is why Phantasm's ability to achieve classic status, especially given its modest budget and production value is such a feat. Unlike most, I did not see this movie until very recently, meaning I've seen a very large amount of horror flicks prior to this so did not expect to find anything new in an old low budget horror flick. How wrong I was.

Phantasm is a creepy, scary, psychological movie. The movie is more interested in playing with your mind than with a body count, which is the way I prefer it. There's an air of mystery throughout the movie, some of which is not resolved. I liked that a horror movie, especially one from a few decades ago, found ways to surprise me and keep me on the edge of my seat. Sure the effects and makeup is a bit dated, but that doesn't stop this from being a classic movie. If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend giving it a chance.』

(The Anchor Bay Edition)
『PHANTASM has fared pretty well on home video over the years with 3 VHS editions that I am aware of, 3 laserdisc issues and so far two (region 1) DVD releases (where's the bluray?). This latest version from Anchor Bay is the first time we have gotten an anamorphic release and it sure is nice to have it. Anchor Bay generally does an amazing job at putting together all sorts of cool extras and animated menus for their releases and they do a fairly good job here. The anamorphic transfer on this DVD does not seem to me to be the same print used for the MGM and laserdisc releases. I think this transfer looks a little more grainy and the color a little more off than the previous DVD. It looks okay but it isn't remarkable in any way. I suppose this could be because I'm now watching on a large HD screen and flaws are more apparent than before. It is difficult to compare this print accurately with the previous non-anamorphic ones. The Dolby 5.1 soundtrack sounds the same as the previous releases and it is quite good however this new DVD DOES NOT include the original mono soundtrack that was provided on the MGM release. There are a couple of new extras exclusive to this Anchor Bay edition. There is a short version of the PHANTASMAGORIA documentary and some interview segments called ACTORS HAVING A BALL. Those are the only features that are exclusive to this release. The commentary track is the same one I have been listening too since the collectors edition LaserDisc. Strangely, there are things MISSING from this Anchor Bay DVD that were on the LaserDisc and MGM DVD. There are ten minutes of deleted scenes on the MGM and only 8 minutes here (2 deleted scenes are missing). Angus Scrimm in australia doing his tall man schtick is not included on this release. The Coscarelli/Scrimm TV interview is here though, as are cleaned up versions fo the trailers and TV ads. There are NO radio spots included on this one, also gone is the Angus Scrimm introduction to the film (an especially sad ommission by Anchor Bay). The stills gallery is not included and neither is the complete version of "Sittin Here At Midnight" by Bill Thornbury, or the "Disco Phantasm" music tracks. We do get the Fangoria convention footage. One big improvment is the restoration of the original poster art for the front cover. This is also a two sided DVD cover in a transparent keepcase that has cool inside cover photography and a disc that looks like a silver sphere. This is a far from a definitive video release of PHANTASM but the anamorphic transfer makes this the best edition we have gotten so far. And by the way, I think PHANTASM is the greatest horror film ever made.』

(Scary in 1979, hilarious now, but still a treasure)
『This movie is a classic. I am sure it scared the heck out of the viewers the first time it was released. It is funny for us now in 2009, but it is still a treasure for collectors of movie memorabilia. I collect horror movies from the original "Nosferatu" until the stuff like "Drag me to hell". It is not that I like to be frightened, but it is exciting to scream and laugh afterwards because of how silly was what got us scared. Excellent movie to see the traditional middle 70s to middle 80s horror movies.』

(Great movie, I met Angus once...)
『One tall man, three heroes, several small jawas, one black Plymouth Cuda, a flying ball that'll drill ya, and a partridge in a pear tree!

Great movie. Weird as heck, but fun! I met Angus Scrimm at a Fangoria horror movie convention as a teen back in 1987. Wow. What fun. He was really adept at being able to laugh about the Tall Man character and enjoying the role for what it was. He talked about how little dialogue he actually had in Phantasm I and II. He actually had it all memorized and said it to us...something like, "Boy! Boy! Boy! You play a good game boy but the game is finished, now you die! Boy!" and a few other lines. It took him like fifteen seconds lol. We all cracked up. I got his autograph. It was my first convention for sci fi/horror.

Reggie Bannister is the greatest. "We're hot as love!" oh man, classic

And for corn's sake, the CUDA! Plymouth Cuda! Oh baby! That and the Dodge Challenger, the two greatest cars ever made!

This is a fun frightfest. My wife is just terrified of this flick so it's fun to watch at Halloween.

I think it's an UTTER TRAVESTY that Phantasm II is STILL not available on Region I! Total blasphemy folks!』

『The Original Classic From The Director Of THE BEASTMASTER and BUBBA HO-TEP Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury star in the shocker that started it all, in which two brothers discover that their local mortuary hides a legion of hooded killer dwarf creatures, a flying drill-ball, and the demonic mortician known as The Tall Man (an iconic performance by Angus Scrimm) who enslaves the souls of the damned. More than 25 years later, it remains unlike any fright film you’ve ever seen. 『Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's in his early 20s, has a cool car, splendid '70s hair, leather jacket, plays guitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, in particular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to go astray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend a funeral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; in the course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into the back of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe his little brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severed finger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until the sequel-ripe twist ending. Phantasm was one of the first horror movies to break the unspoken rule that victims were supposed to scream, fall down, and cower until they were killed. Instead, Mike and Jody are resourceful and smart, aggressively pursuing the evil inside the funeral home with a shotgun and Colt pistol. Furthermore, the script has a great deal of character development, especially in the relationship between the two brothers. The film even has a surprisingly glossy look, despite its low-budget origins, and little outright gore (except for the infamous steel spheres that drill into victims' heads). This drive-in favorite was a big success at the time of its release, and spawned three sequels. Little wonder; it includes an inventive story, likable characters, a runaway pace, and, of course, evil dwarves cloaked in Army blankets. The end result is one of the better horror films of the late 1970s. Hot-rod fans take note: Jody drives a Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, the pinnacle of 1960s muscle cars, rounding out his status as a Cool Guy. --Jerry Renshaw

(Good 80's fun)
『Night of the Comet is an extra pungent chunk of 80's cheese that is sure to bring pangs of wistful nostalgia to those that grew up in that paramount decade. For anyone else, it will prove to be good old-fashioned apocolyptic fun.

At first, Night of the Comet takes on a decidedly tongue in cheek approach, and it serves the plot very well. We witness the tale of two sisters who survive the coming of a deadly comet that reduces the human race to piles of dust. As they try to find comfort in the post apocalyptic city, they must also ward off zombies that are a product of the comet as well. From there, the film does itself a bit of a disservice by shifting to a more serious story. It seems a group of scientists have also survived the comet, and they are out to collect any survivors they can find. Not because they intend to save them, but rather because they plan to render them brain dead, using their bodies merely as a means to generate fresh blood for themselves.

Contrary to what you may have heard about Night of the Comet, this is not at all a zombie movie. Also, although Fangoria listed it as one of the "best horror movies you've never seen", it would be a bit of a stretch to even call this a horror movie. It's more of a sci-fi-comedy or a sci-fi spoof at best. Judging from a lot of the other reviews, I think Night of the Comet's strong point is largely its nostalgic value. From the mullets right down the the montage scene complete with Cyndi Lauper song, this movie is as 80's as it gets. It embodies the 80's, it breathes the 80's, it shrieks the 80's.

With low expectations, Night of the Comet is a fun time, check it out.』

(Girls will survive!)
『2 sister's left behind after a strange comet kills or mutates people of earth. They are saved only by lucky circumstances from the comets passing but things get worse as the days go by. Great movie.』

(Classic Fun.)
『This is such a great classic film that combines humor, horror, cute cast and lots of ammunition to kill the zombies with!』

(Cheerleaders and zombies)
『Night of the Comet is a great piece of 80's sci-fi noir. How can you go wrong with "Mags" from The Last Starfighter and the cheerleader from Fast Times at Ridgemount High toting machine guns and fighting zombies? There's enough of a plot and a dose of suspense to keep you interested, while the gags and subtle, well placed jokes remind you that there's a tongue in cheek thing going on here. By the way, Spielberg probably ripped off the whole bodies turning to dust and leaving behind the clothes idea, used in this movie, in his version of War of the Worlds. (Not knocking Steven, those effects were killer.) This movie has been hard to find, glad it was finally released on DVD.』

(Night of the Comet DVD)
『I've always liked this movie and having Catherine Mary Stewart in it really doesn't hurt at all. It's a very fun sci-fi ish B movie that's entertaining.』
『No Description Available.
Genre:Feature Film-Comedy
Rating:PG13
Release Date:6-MAR-2007
Media Type:DVD』

『A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt'sNight of the Comethas built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios.-- Paul Gaita
