When it's trying to scare the pisss out of you, that's when. In retrospect I had to think about why I liked this flick, because it does have stuff going against it. HOUSE is cheesy and campy, and yet also fun, and I guess maybe it's fun because it's so cheesy and campy. HOUSE is very much a product of the 1980s and this absolutely includes its featured lead William Katt, the Greatest American Hero himself.
HOUSE sets itself up to be a sinister horror film with dark psychological overtones. Roger Cobb (Katt) is a popular horror fiction author who's been recently coasting on his past success. Roger's in a slump, and it's not helping that he's been so obsessed with cranking out his Vietnam War memoirs. The writing doldrums go back some time ago to when his kid mysteriously vanished at his aunt's spooky house. So to recap: languishing career, vanished kid. And, because certain things crop up in threes, Roger's hot actress wife also divorces him.
When his eccentric aunt hangs herself, Roger inherits her house and, rather than selling it, Roger decides to live in it for a while, hoping for inspiration to kick in. But an evil house does not a muse make. Soon all the weird stuff starts happening.
A lot of the movie is presented as a one-man act for William Katt, broken up by cutaways to Roger's ex-wife and by occasional drop-in visits by his nosy neighbor and his sexy neighbor. For the first half hour or so you sink into William Katt's character as he finds himself tormented by the haunted house, which is somehow dredging up traumatic memories of Roger Cobb's stint in Vietnam. There's a whiff of THE SHINING going on as we see Roger gradually going off the deep end. But then, somewhere along the way, things descend into slapstick territory. And while the story does drum up scattered scares here and there, they're undermined by the painfully obvious rubber monster suits and all the (intentional) goofiness. We get rehashed zaniness that recalls the EVIL DEAD series, but lacking that Sam Raimi's inspired frenzied touch. For a horror movie, the victim body count is practically nil. But the champion killjoy are all those Vietnam flashbacks that feel totally out of place and very dated. To me, these scenes established a jarring effect.
So why do I like this movie? I really think that a huge chunk of the reason is that I saw it during its theatrical run when I was a teen, so I'm pulling the nostalgia card. If you're an '80s buff, then you've got William Katt and George Wendt (Norm!! from CHEERS) and Richard Moll (NIGHT COURT) who in this one plays a soldier in Roger's platoon in the flashbacks. For a low budget production HOUSE actually boasts some decent acting. I like that William Katt never breaks character, even though all kinds of crazy shizzy rain down on him, and he takes on this fascinating tunnel vision mentality. You and me, the first time the house does something scary, we're probably out of there so fast there's you and me-shaped dust clouds left behind. But Roger Cobb decides to fight and beat the house at its own game. That is some impressive (and very stupid) brand of singlemindedness. And I even relish the bizarre turn which finds Roger Cobb babysitting a neighbor's young kid.
I also enjoy the film's juggling of the serious horror elements and the tongue-in-cheek stuff. What can I say, I'm a child of those times. I roll my eyes and make all the proper groaning noises, and yet I can't help but laugh with appreciation at all the kooky. William Katt takes it all so seriously, it's friggin' endearing.』
(House with a past) 『Most people know the star, William Katt, as the star of 80s TV show, Greatest American Hero. Here, he takes a slightly different role about a Vietnam veteran with a troubled past. His character loses a friend in Vietnam&his son dissappears mysteriously which everntually leads to the breakup of his marriage. William Katt's character inherits an old (haunted) house when a late aunt dies&wills it to him. Mysterious things start to happen after that. House is a bit horror, a bit comedy with some good makeup and special effects thrown it. I think this was an entertaining horror film with George Wendt (of TV's Cheers) and Richard Mol (of TV's Night Court) as part of the supporting cast. This movie was a lot of fun. Check it out, you may like it.』
(From the director of Friday The 13th Parts 2 and 3 and from the producer of the original Friday The 13th) 『From the director of Friday The 13th Parts 2 and 3(Steve Miner)and from the producer of Friday The 13th:Part I; HOUSE was an awesome movie that had a lot of the same actors and actresses from the FRIDAY THE 13TH saga like Ron Carroll(Friday The 13th:Part 1)and had the same music composer(Harry Manfredini)which also did the music scoring for most of the FRIDAY THE 13TH installments as you may notice, especially during the major action scenes that are violent.
It was also interesting seeing William Katt from THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO doing his first real horror flick in this movie, with the exception of CARRIE and doing this movie 3 years after ABC had cancelled THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO, due to a hug dip in ratings since newer shows that premiered between the Fall of 1982 like KNIGHT RIDER and in the Spring of 1983 like THE A-TEAM led to THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO's cancellation by the Summer of 1983.
HOUSE also takes me all the way back to memory lane to when I was still living in the Imperial Valley when HOUSE had its theatrical release in the Spring of 1986 when I was in 7th grade at Wilson Jr. High School in my hometown(El Centro, CA).
It's just too bad that HOUSE 2:THE SECOND STORY wasn't as good as this one was, but I'm sure part of the reason why HOUSE II wasn't as good as the original was probably due to the fact that since HOUSE 2 was Rated PG-13 instead of Rated R like HOUSE I, which resulted in HOUSE II having a lot less action and a lot less violence than the original along with the fact that sequels usually never measure up to the originals either, especially since they don't make sequels like they used to, unlike HALLOWEEN 2, FRIDAY THE 13TH:PART II, and PSYCHO 2 for instance which were all very exceptional sequels and probably the best sequels of all time.』
(One of the best forgotten comedy horror films) 『House I saw this film years ago as a teen, like many of the other great forgotten horror classics that I remember today, but unlike most horror films House is one of the best horror/comedy's ever made becuse it scared you and made you laugh at the same time and just the look of the film itself gives you a fun vivid feeling, my favorite scene though there are many good scene in the film, the scene where William katts character told his neighbor friend that there was a big raccoon in the closet, but in actuality there was a big monster in the closet, I always laugh at that scene no matter how many times I've scene it becuse its such a funny scene, I mean if you just look at both the character's faces during that scene you'll see what I mean, and another thing that I liked about this film is that theres a happy ending and I prefer my horror films with happy endings, and if you like to laugh and have a safe fun scar like me then dont forget this movie becuse to many good films are forgotten.』
(House: Limited Edition (20,000) includes House II (1986)-Good flick!) 『House: Limited Edition (20,000) includes House (1, 1985) and House II (1986). House was a four or five star comedy-horror flick that I really enjoyed. Buying this edition permitted me to obtain both House (1) and House 2 for a good price.
I saw House in 1985 when it first opened and thought it was a very clever and well made movie starring William Katt (Carrie and Greatest American Hero). It had good casting, sets, musical score and the creature effects were pretty well done. Special effects were made before the advent of CGI or advanced prosthetics but were effective and hold up very well for the majority of creatures represented. 』 『ROGER COBB IS A VIETNAM VET. The writing recreates the nostalgia of the radio era, but adds the video. There is even a line where Khan asks Lamont where he got his nice tie, to which he responds, "Brooks Brothers". This is how radio used to plug in ads from their sponsors into story lines. The humor may at times be a little subtle for some, but that's what adds to the fun of it.
Back to the above topic of widescreen, there was only one version released in that form, and that was on 12" laserdisc, which I am fortunate enough to have found. You are not missing quite as much as you could be because it was filmed in 1.85:1. Still it is a travesty to cut off so much of the movie's real-estate as do all Pan&Scan (I REFUSE to say "fullscreen") versions. Hopefully, all P&S will soon go away with CRT TVs and the rest of the dinosaurs.
I guess it's probably also too much to ask for a Blu-Ray version. Of course, if it does come out in that form, it'll probably be $30+ like the rest of 'em. I hope that Sony can avoid making another "Beta" mistake in which they priced themselves into oblivion. Where DO they get the idiotic executives that make such bad (albeit money-grubbing) decisions anyway? Oh well, they DID recently release "The Phantom" on BD, and it is very reasonably priced, so there may be hope yet.』
(THE SHADOW) 『THE SHADOW
The Shadows is a nice old-fashioned movie, circa 1930's, which is the decade it is set in. I grew up watching old movies which were shot in the 30's. I think this movie could hold its own with any of the B movies shot at the time, except this one is in color. Alec Baldwin plays Lamont Cranston and the Shadow equally well. I suspect CGI was used in the few scenes which looked like they came from book covers. Penelope Ann Miller wears her clothes comfortably. She doesn't look or act like she is wearing period piece clothing. She looks like she could pose for a art deco statue. If you don't understand what I mean, go rent a copy of HAIR. The actors aren't comfortable in the 60's style clothing. The overall style of the movie is art deco. The old Monograph Hotel fits right into the NYC skyline. If you doubt me, go find a copy of New York Deco, a collection of photographs of famous and not famous New York art deco buildings. Briefly seen items, but interesting: The pneumatic tube communication system, we still use this system in drive-up bank windows. The Tulku's temple and the Hotel Monograph are absolutely gorgeous. Taylor Dane's performance of the theme song, ORIGNIAL SIN is her usually great belting of a good song. The singer in the Cobalt Club who does SOME KIND OF MYSTERY doesn't really get to strut her stuff, to truly appreciate her work, buy the CD soundtrack. I must like this movie, I paid to see it on pay per view, and taped it. When I dumped my video collection (mainly taped of TV) I missed this movie, so I bought it on DVD. 』
(This Shadow is Exceptional !!) 『I remember when this movie first came out in the theaters in 1994 I was very excited. I was living in Parker, Arizona a town with no movie theater, so I drove across the desert to the closest theater showing it which was in Laughlin, Nevada. I was and am a total Shadow-phile. I've listened to dozens of the radio shows, read many of the classic pulp stories and read numerous histories of the character. This adaptation blew me away! It honored elements from both the pulp stories and the classic radio shows. Alec Baldwin is perfect as Lamont Cranston/The Shadow....just as I had always imagined him. John Lone plays Shiwan Kahn with just the right amount of over the top maniacal super villain and tongue in cheek comedy. Tim Curry is just plain glorious as Shiwan's mind controlled minion. Peter Boyle plays The Shadow's agent Shrevey the Cab Driver spot on to the radio show voice and Ian McKellen as the absentminded professor will make you forget Gandalf and Magneto Lastly the special effects really do make you believe that The Shadow can cloud our mind to his presence. The art deco world is right out of the 1930's and adds that bit of realism to this time period specific picture. This is one film I can watch over and over again and never lose the sense of joy and wonder.』
(Death by Art Deco) 『This movie is so gorgeous I could just EAT IT ALIVE. The plot could have been better, but the chemistry between Lamont and Margo is excellent, with dry wit and depth of character.
The music is great. The visuals... are beyond description.
I could watch it over and over and over again-- and I do.』

Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability "to cloud men's minds." A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still,The Shadowis true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling.--Jeff Shannon』

(The Creature...) 『Out of all the Universal Monsters (or any really) The Gill-Man has always been my favorite! Im so happy they released the trilogy on 1 DvD set!! All of the movies look amazing on my HDTV.
Of the three movies, The Creature from the Black Lagoon is defiantly the best! And Universal did a smart thing...they are notorious for their double-sided discs (Hammer Horror Collection), so they decided to make one disc just for the first film....and THANK GOD! lol The rst of the movies arnt that bad, although watching The Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Revenge of the Creature back to back make it look exactly like King Kong (which Creature was HEAVILY inspired by Kong). Creature Walks Among Us is very very very sloooowwww. The last couple of minutes are some of the best dircting I've ever seen...but everything else is very very very slowww. (Im going out of order..) Revenge of the Creature...well if you've seen Jaws 3...you've basically seen the Revenge of the Creature...(Id like to note Jaws 3 was originally going to be another Creature movie...)
This is a great set for Creature fans, and Horror fans alike!』
(Creature from the Black Lagoon) 『I love old horror films and i've yet to watch this one. I'm glad I made this purchase and I recommend this film to fans of old horror movies. The first movie is a classic with awesome underwater camera work and a good score. I loved when he popped up out of nowhere but they seemed to use the same score everytime he pops up, even in the other two films.
Revenge of The Creature is a very good sequel. It shows a crew trying to capture the creature and it's just fun to watch.
Creature Walks Among Us is anther good sequel. While may not be considered a classic, it was still very enjoyable. This time the creature is captured and put in an amusement park setting.
All movie clock in around an hour twenty minutes, so you can watch all three within a reasonable amount of time. I highly recommend this set.』

Made in between his genre defining Night of the Living Dead and the even superior sequel Dawn of the Dead, The Crazies involves a small Pennsylvania town that becomes the breeding ground for a manmade virus that ravages the populace, which has a habit of turning its victims into homicidal maniacs in the process. Loaded with an apocalyptic atmosphere, plenty of suspense, and enough political commentary that it even remains relevant today, The Crazies may not offer anything you haven't already seen before in 28 Days/Weeks Later, or even the upcoming remake, but keep in mind that back in 1973, what Romero presented here was something near revolutionary. Blue Underground continues to release some wonderful Blu-Ray's, and things haven't changed with The Crazies, which deserves to be in your collection if you're a horror fan in the least.』

(The Crazies) 『Sometimes I wonder if George Romero could be one of those mainstream directors who can operate in Hollywood like Wes Craven. Romero's best films are most definitely his older fare while trying to adapt to this formula in the modern age after Land of the Dead has resulted in the disappointing but well thought out Diary of the Dead, and what is supposedly his worse recieved movie Survival of the Dead. Sure He's made movies like Creepshow and Monkeyshines in the eighties but for my money his best movies were made in the seventies, films like Martin and The Crazies. Looking back at it The Crazies might not seem the best of his movies. You really don't have anything like Zombies, or vampires to see as the horror and most people unaccustomed to the film might end up calling it a cheaper version of Outbreak. But in a way with Romero's political streak in view with not so subtle allegory and metaphor, in my opinion its one of his more interesting films. The idea of a virus, something unseen that can attack anyone without a mask or knife is good use of preying on a more realistic fear. The fact that it turns its victims into mindless crazy psychopaths is an interesting idea for what could be considered villains. But then the army shows up trying to secure an already volatile situation created by them (the virus is a man made bioweapon unleashed when a plane crashes)and starts shooting citizens who've gone mad then you really have no true villains, just people reacting to their circumstances. These scenes are interspersed with Romero's criticsm showing government who keep debating on dropping a nuke on the town, or a doctor not given the equipment and cooperation He needs to find a cure for the virus. The movie unlike some of Romero's more famous films has a more harder feel to it and to me thats one of its charms in a way. Theres not a whole lot of gore on display so the characters and their situations take more precedence over more horrific things. Its not the greatest film ever but I like the independent feel it exhudes even when the story is a bit heavy handed. The DVD itself from Blue Underground is well produced. There is a Blu-Ray on the way before the remake hits in February which seems to have the identical features. For a low budget movie the DVD itself does have excellent picture and sound, and the features are good for such a small unheard of picture. I have nothing against the remake as it does look entertaining, but before it hits do yourself a favor and check out the original.』
(I think Romero was the crazy one here...) 『I have a terrific idea for a horrifying movie. Imagine: A movie comprised almost entirely of bland and tedious dialogue that gets so caught up in trying to convey a message that the actual content of the movie itself becomes a complete afterthought! Oh wait, I just watched that movie, it was called The Crazies. George A.Romero has created some excellent movies in his time. He has also created some very bad ones, and this is the category that The Crazies falls into.
The crash of a plane carrying a harmful biochemical toxin leaves a small rural town's water supply tainted with the virus. The prognosis for those infected suggests only two grim outcomes: Death, or irreversible insanity. The government sends in the army to quarantine the town which erupts into a full scale war between the soldiers and the residents who aren't willing to conform to the governements plans for them.
The Crazies is a very blunt commentary on not trusting your government and the power of the common man. That's all fine and good, but when it's diluted with so much needless and plodding dialogue, that message takes off like a lead balloon. This is about 100 minutes long, but if you trimmed all the fat from it, there would probably only be about a half and hour of actual story. But let's suppose that you're a fan of Romero's Living Dead series and simply want to check out The Crazies to see some good action and gore (And who would blame you?). Save for a handful of short shootout scenes between the soldiers and the civilians, you won't find much to write home about here.
Overall The Crazies was one of the dullest and ultimately pointless movies I've watched in quite a while. I urge you, do not let the Romero fanboys pull the wool over your eyes this time, even by B-movie standards this is pretty bad stuff. Pass on this one for sure.』
(Not Romero's best, but still excellent and underrated) 『THE CRAZIES
**** Out of 5
Release Date- March 16th, 1973
Running Time- 103-Minutes
Rating- R
Screenplay- Paul McCollough&George A. Romero
Director- George A. Romero
Starring- Will MacMillan, Harold Wayne Jones, Lane Carroll, Lloyd Hollar, Lynn Lowry, Richard Liberty
Released in 1973 this was the 4th movie made by legendary filmmaker George A. Romero; best known for his zombie flicks there is actually a lot more to Romero than zombie flicks even if that is his legacy. The Crazies isn't really a zombie movie since the characters aren't walking corpses, but rather infected, but The Crazies does sort of have the formula that is seen in zombie flicks. The plot deals with a virus accidentally released in a small Pennsylvania town and the people infected go Crazy hence the title the Crazies and you can clearly see the influence here on 28 Days Later and The Crazies seems like it might have been inspired by I Drink Your Blood since both movies follow the same basic idea and both have the super cutie Lynn Lowry.
The Crazies despite being directed by Romero and has built up a following it's not really well known, but than again it almost seems as if any Romero flick that isn't a zombie movie besides Creepshow isn't very well known, which is quite sad since again there is a lot more to Romero than zombie movies. The Crazies is a strong movie in the career of George Romero and deserves more credit than it gets.
The screenplay by Paul McCollough&George A. Romero was solid, but a bit flawed as well. Like most of Romero's movies I found the lead characters to be well developed and mostly likeable. Of the 3 main characters Judy played by Lane Carroll is the least developed, but she's still likeable. But I thought the characters were mostly solid, but the plot is slightly uneven and could have used a bit more work to it. While there is a lot of action The Crazies is also high on talk and some of the dialogue can get repetitive at times. But as a whole despite these flaws I thought the script was pretty good overall.
As director George Romero delivers a solid flick that can be a little sluggish in its pacing and is some what hindered by its low budget. But Romero got his start it low budget flicks and is able to work well with the limited money the movie had. Romero is able to deliver some good suspense and solid action scenes, but when it's heavy in dialogue it can lack a bit. Like I said the script is good, but not everything works and in those scenes is when the pacing can lag at times. But even with Romero keeps the pace moving and delivers a lot of excitement.
The Crazies is loved by some Romero fans and disliked by others and I can understand why some people might not like this, but overall despite any problems I thought it was a solid flick. The movie hits the ground running and dives right into the plot, which can sometimes hurt a film, but other times helps and in the case of the Crazies I think it works well since it adds to the confusion the characters are going through, but it slows down a bit and allows the characters to do a little more.
Like I said earlier I always thought Romero was able to create really great characters and while the characters in The Crazies may not be the strongest ones he's created I do think they were interesting. I liked David played by Will MacMillan and Clank played by Harold Wayne Jones was my favorite in the movie. The characters again may not be Romero's best, but I still found them likeable and interesting and was rooting for them to survive.
Overall The Crazies is a heavily flawed movie, but it's still a solid movie and much underrated movie in the legendary career of George Romero.』 『Its code name is 'Trixie,' an experimental government germ weapon that leaves its victims either dead or irreversibly insane. When the virus is accidentally unleashed in Evans City, Pennsylvania, the small community becomes a war zone of panicked military, desperate scientists and gentle neighbors turned homicidal maniacs. Now a small group of citizens has fled to the town's outskirts where they must hide from trigger-happy soldiers while battling their own depraved urges. But even if they can escape the madness of this plague, can they survive the unstoppable violence of THE CRAZIES?』 『During the 10 years betweenNight of the Living DeadandDawn of the Dead, director George Romero had a string of box-office flops--some of which were actually quite good. For example, there'sThe Crazies, in which a military plane carrying biological-warfare agents crashes near Evans City, Pennsylvania. The virus gets into the town's water supply and has two effects on the infected: death or irreversible insanity. The military moves in to contain the situation, but the local populace regards the army as a menacing force and things rapidly spin out of control. Soon the highly contagious virus infects the whole town and the soldiers as well, while a government scientist races to find an antidote. The Craziesfeatures some great set pieces as the virus spreads: a little old lady smiles sweetly and stabs a soldier to death with a knitting needle; a young woman placidly sweeps with a broom while soldiers and locals have a bloody firefight around her; a soldier swings his rifle wildly at his comrades until they shoot him.
Made in the shadow of both Vietnam and Watergate,The Craziescontains plenty of allegory: an invasion by military force, government cover-up and duplicity, madness and eventually genocide (all set, of course, in Romero's beloved Pennsylvania). The President only appears on television, and then only the back of his head is shown as he speaks in detached, almost bored tones. LikeNight of the Living Dead, this film offers no hope, no comfort, and sure as hell no happy ending. Keep an eye out for Romero in a somewhat gassy role as Evans City's mayor.--Jerry Renshaw』

I am baffled by some of the negative reviews regarding this movie. People who didn't like it must be the soft, sensative type that only love cheesy horror movies like Hocus Pocus. This movie is not for the squeemish or faint hearted. It is very graphic and deals with a family of twisted killers in the 1970's who torture their victims in their rundown shack. It has a very dark circus freak/Pshycedelic feel to it that keeps you at the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. It'sHouse of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-office gross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Screamera. While paying homage toThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre,Last House on the Left, Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, thisHouseis definitely worth a visit... if you dare.--Jeff Shannon』

I truly thought this was going to be brainless, sick, gory, run-of-the-mill entertainment when I'd bought my own copy a couple weeks back. This IS an original story. It has to be. I didn't read any reviews nor did I hear anybody talk to me about it. I just blindly bought it. Glad I did too! This is the kind of Horror story that can only be dreamt, or at least it plays out like a sad dream. It almost seems as if a story like this couldn't be made up haha. As though it really happened. I know, that sounds crazy. 'DEADGIRL' never has a slow pace and always kept me glued to the TV wondering what happens next. Call me slow but I didn't figure out the whole story until the very end. At first, I thought this was going nowhere. I thought that this film was going to be one of those that gives no answers. Leaves you wondering. Again, I'm always glad I'm wrong about my stern predictions when it comes to Horror. I'm trying not to give any spoilers when writing this. Your just going to have to see this amazing story! Once I figured out its story, I automatically fell in love with it! The soundtrack to 'DEADGIRL' fits perfectly! Gives it that nice dreamy feel! While listening to the music, I recognized one of the artist! It so happens to be a lead singer that played in a band titled, 'Silver Scooter'. I was lucky and the chance to go see them play in Dallas,Texas some years back. Now that they've broken up, the lead singer has a solo project titled, 'Super XX Man', which again, can be heard playing during the film. Such a shock for me to see such a small indie band belong to a soundtrack of a well-budgeted film. Anyway, where was I? Warning, the film does has its disturbing moments. After all, it is a Horror film. Its not loaded with splatter but just enough to get its point across. I never expected this film to turn out to be such a romantically dark story. You know what, don't even rent it. Just buy it! It needs needs to be added in your Horror collection.』
(I LOVE THIS FILM. IT IS NOT FOR THE KIDS.) 『THIS MOVIE VERY ORIGINAL. THE MOVIE IS VERY DISTURBING IN IT'S SUBJECT MANNER. VERY HARD TO WATCH WHAT HAPPEN TO THE GIRL IN THE FILM BUT WELL WORTH THE JOURNEY. THIS MOVIE NOT FOR THE KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 NOT UNLESS YOU ARE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY PEOPLE WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH A ZOMBIE-LIKE-DEADGIRL OK. THIS MOVIE IS A MUST HAVE IN EVERY HORROR MOVIE BUFF CATALOG. VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD.』
(Can we ever really know our friends?) 『Being a teenager and being bored - those two things seem to go hand-in-hand. For J.T. and his friend this means skipping school, thinking long and hard about the "where" that comes with drinking, and then deciding on an abandoned mental institution. At first this amounts to the destruction of property and demystifying the premises, but the afterward finds them exploring a little place called "the tunnel." In the tunnel the two find many things, but the most intriguing of all is a girl that is bound in chains and seemingly abandoned, all alone but still alive. Things get odder after one of the boys stays with her and decides to take out all his anger on her, breaking her neck in the process. The only problem is that this does not kill her - on the contrary, it starts a landslide that leaves everyone wondering where she came from, what she is doing here, and why she will not die.
While Dead Girl starts out slow and leaves a lot of questions unanswered, it does answer one key thing that makes me think that we all know the answers to what she is. When we first see the girl, she seems harmless enough. By the time some answers pour in and this façade is pulled away, however, she seems less like someone that was tormented and more like someone that you would chain in a basement because of a really good reason. That makes her scary and understandable at the same time, explaining how she was put into an institution and why she would be left behind, and it says a lot about the effort she put into making a character with no speeches or threats into something that changes its proverbial face. The actors do a good job of selling certain things about their characters as all of this is happening, too, making the movie one that is frighteningand engaging all at the same time. The plot takes a few twists and turns as well, and the ending is one of those that really stayed with me.
Dead Girl has a lot of stuff in it that the movie does not discuss - it has nudity and violence and a lot of very disturbing notions. For this reason, some people may be turned off by the movie. Others may like the movie simply because the portrayal of the people is a real one in a lot of ways, showing the dark side of people and even the ugly side of caring. Personally, I liked it - even the slow parts - knowing how it all fit together. If you like a dark movie and have some time to check it out, I would say that it may be worth your time. Just don't let the editorial review or the cover review of the movie throw you - this is not a coming-of-age movie or some walk in the after-dark park. If you can abide by that, then you should find yourself watching something you could really find interesting. 』
(Offensive though Interesting&flawed **1/2 stars) 『A group of male teens stumble across a near dead&bound female in an abandoned Hospital. With little care as to who may have left her for dead and why, they decide to keep her as their sex slave. Variations of this theme dot the cinematic landscape, with perhaps THE COLLECTOR, being the most noteworthy in the legitimate film category. DEAD GIRL, however, is apparently a Zombie film, though such was not played out well. On the plus side this is a slick, (though sick), well produced film, that is NOT a comedy. Just because teens are featured, (who behave like teens), does not make the picture funny. Read some of my other reviews where I discuss this viewer disconnect from reality. Geesh. Anyhow, Caution Spoilers ahead: As usual in much of contemporary cinema; DEAD GIRL portrays men as misogynist beasts, regardless of whether they are high school stoners, dweebs or jocks who are willing to engage in oral sex with a rage infested...woman...zombie...failed lab experiment... Take your pick. This scene and the events which led up to it were not credible, nor was the hand wringing dweeb who repeatedly failed to do what was right and call the police. Apparently he was afraid of JT, the film's main sicko though he had the stones to basically tell his alcoholic dad to "F-O". After slicing off the stoner dude's hand, (he was armed with a machete that would do "Jason" justice), he drops the weapon and runs from JT. Go figure. Even less credible was the buxom babe who gets nailed in the head by a tire iron at warp speed, though proceeds to lay a savage beating on the 2 wacko male protagonists. Again, this was not a credible scene, especially after the film maker demonstrated that she had a fractured skull after being hit. In reality, she would have instantly been killed by such a blow. Further, that the sex slave had boundless energy when needed, though if she was a Zombie, that is OK. That said, DEAD GIRL could not decide whether it was a Horror film or a drama. The Zombie girl angle should have been better developed. As it stands, DEAD GIRL teases as it only flirts with the Zombie (which is actually a sub plot in the film). I kept waiting for the film to "jump", but alas, such was not to be. There was also a lot of talk and I found myself watching the clock. Major questions also remained unanswered such as; "Where did it come from"? Don't think she laid there for perhaps decades as the Hospital had been abandoned for some time. Also, no one seemed to care about missing girls and dying guys. Where were the authorities? Also some scenes were a little confusing as I believe they were actually dream sequences. The ending also made little sense. Short of giving it away, let me just say that once a dweeb, always a dweeb, (and I don't think that he would have done what he did). DEAD GIRL could have been so much better, but as it stands this is another marginal or even a fair outing with an interesting sub plot (that was poorly developed). That said, this is a sick and offensive film which sends a number of bad messages out to young people, like rape is OK, (albeit with a Zombie?). Not for all tastes, though fans of Zombie cinema&"Survivalist Horror" may be interested. **1/2 stars.』
(I thought Americans had forgotten how to make movies like this.) 『Deadgirl (Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel, 2008)
For some odd reason, though I picked movies I wanted to watch at random over the past week, I started out with mediocre horror flicks, then went upwards in quality in a linear progression. While for obvious reason that makes me a very happy camper, it does make me limit my use of superlatives in reviews for movies that came in the middle of the streak. (Which probably makes you a very happy camper.) I was all set to go gaga over Carver for being the most blood-soaked fun I'd had in weeks. Then I saw Deadgirl, and it was even better. Then I saw Isolation, which is even better, though a thoroughly different kind of horror flick than the two that preceded it, so maybe I should just go back to superlatives and lavish the praise this movie so richly deserves upon it. Now, let me say that the part of me that was thrilled with Deadgirl is also the part that relentlessly devours Matthew Stokoe novels; this is a movie that sets out to do what horror movies have traditionally done (and stopped trying to do about the time they met with mass commercial success), push as many envelopes as possible. Shock and disgust viewers. Make them question, well, everything. And in that vein, Deadgirl is probably the most successful horror film since The Exorcist, though where Friedkin was honed in on religion, Sarmiento and Harel are looking more generically towards societal mores.
Plot: a couple of high school stoners, Rickie (Cadillac Records' Shiloh Fernandez) and TJ (The Brothers Bloom's Noah Segan), cut school one day and, instead of smoking up in the parking lot, decide to utilize a nearby abandoned asylum. This leads to some rampant destruction of property, and then to some exploring. Much to their surprise, the two of them discover what seems to be a forgotten patient in a locked room in the basement. The thing is, the patient, who TJ quickly christens Deadgirl (Jenny Spain in her film debut), should have been dead long ago. TJ experiments, and finds out that she is, in fact, incapable of dying, much to Rickie's horror. Cue the Lord of the Flies vibe here, as the former best friends square off. TJ realizes that what he's got is, essentially, a living (well, undead) blow-up doll, while Rickie, who can't get past the fact that Deadgirl is, or once was, human, wants nothing more than to restore what little dignity she has left to her. When their secret gets out, things just get worse...
Necrophilia, while a semi-popular theme in the music biz ever since Alice Cooper's "I Love the Dead", has never really taken hold in the film world outside a very, very small fringe of hardcore freaks (viz. Cerda's Aftermath or Buttgereit's NekRomantik films). When it's part of a film in prudish North America, it's always alluded to, or stylized, or only allowed to happen in clean, sterile conditions with beautiful, undecomposed corpses. (Not, mind you, that this makes me love Kissed any less than I do.) Well, folks, throw that notion away, because Deadgirl comes complete with all the dirt, stench, and decay you could possibly want, and then some. From the prurient-interest standpoint, this has it all, and then some. But (and I'm sure this will surprise some of my regular readers) that's not what impressed me here. (Okay, not all of it.) The real joy of Deadgirl comes from the quartet of lead actors--Fernandez, Segan, Juno's Candice Accola as Rickie's childhood crush, and Paradise Hills' Eric Podnar as TJ and Rickie's third stoner buddy. All four turn in performances way, way above average for a microbudget movie like this. (And Spain's wordless performance is about as powerful as it can be, given that she spends the entire movie unclothed, and most of it restrained.) I have said many, many times that much of the reason scary movies are scary is that we can get inside the heads of the characters and empathize with one or more of them, and never has that been more true than it is here. I'm not sure "scary" is the proper term for Deadgirl, though. Aside from the zombie-girl angle, there's not much in the way of horror elements in this film. It's high school angst drama done exceptionally well a la River's Edge (a movie it echoes more than once, which I'm sure isn't a coincidence).
Not to say the movie doesn't have its faults. There are a couple of back-to-back scenes about two-thirds of the way through the film where the movie's humor (which has to this point been black, black, black) is played straight, and they ring false. Some of the acting done by minor characters in the film is downright awful. It's not a perfect film by any means. (But the ending, which some are saying is the movie's biggest flaw, I see as a strength, if for no other reason than because it's getting people arguing about the movie in a way an unambiguous, less offensive ending wouldn't have. And I'm on the side of saying "yes, I do see how it fits," though I can't say more than that without major spoilers.) It is, however, a very strong one. I keep thinking about nudging the rating up half a star and not doing so because of the silly comedy scenes, but it still may happen in the future. This is a good one indeed. ***½ 』 『You never forget your first time...
From the producer of HELLRAISER and HEATHERS
Daringly original and genre-busting, Deadgirl is an odyssey into the soul of our alienated youth that takes the conventions of the horror and coming-of-age movies and turns them on their heads.
When high school misfits Rickie and JT decide to ditch school and find themselves lost in the crumbling facility of a nearby abandoned hospital, they come face-to-face with a gruesome discovery: a body of a woman stripped naked, chained to a table and covered in plastic and soon realize she is anything but dead. Quickly the boys find themselves embarking on a twisted yet poignant journey testing the limits of their friendship, and forces both to decide just how far they're willing to stretch their understanding of right and wrong.
From the producer of the seminal "Hellraiser" and the legendary "Heathers", Deadgirl is a new genre classic and a no-holds-barred look at the horror of growing up. Starring Shiloh Fernandez ("Cadillac Records"), Noah Segan ("Brick"), Micheal Bowen ("Kill Bill") and Candice Accola ("Juno").』

(Great Dracula Collection) 『"Creatures of the night" and "Children of the night" are featured on this nice package. Formidable movies, considering that most of them were filmed in the early thirties. I used to watch the classic Dracula movies in my younger years, I really loved them, and still do. This is a great collection, well worth having. Also recommended are Frankenstein the Legacy Collection and The Mummy Collection.』

(Great set - great value - but Universal could have done more...) 『Lot of reviews here and everyone knows the story, so I'll comment on some things from a different angle. You have the option of watching Dracula with an optional soundtrack by Philip Glass performed by the Kronos Quartet. Having studied Philip Glass while majoring in music composition at a music conservatory, I am familiar with many of his works, and was curious to see if his style of composition would work with this movie. I'm sad to say it does not. Glass is known for repetition and variation of motifs. I first thought it might just work with the film because his music, with all of it's repetitive eighth notes might coincide with the hypnotic state cast by Dracula over his subjects. But there are only certain scenes when Dracula actually performs his hypnotic casting, but Glass' driving eighth notes repeating over and over with very little relief just amounts to driving you mad -- I could only take about 20 minutes of it and had to switch back the original sound track. It's not just Glass' style, it just doesn't sound like it was composed to "add" emotional depth to the scenes; instead, it is in the foreground and is almost constantly playing and comes across like a contemporary musical composition being showcased with the movie Dracula projected in the background. To make matters worse, it is very loud compared to the actor's speech, so there are some quite scenes where you actually miss what the character is saying because the string quartet drowns them out.
Here's the sad part: for this optional soundtrack, Universal cleaned up the noisy background hiss of the original and processed it in Digital Dolby, but did nothing to clean up the original soundtrack -- how lame is that? Well, I'm willing to listen to the noisy background of the original just to be rid of a very unsuccessful "soundtrack" that draws attention to itself and actually detracts from the movie instead of enhancing it. Isn't it a mystery how Hollywood operates? You just gotta wonder sometimes. I understand there are costs and profits at stake for everything you do, but wouldn't you think for a classic like this they would run the film through one of the many computerized digital correction facilities that are available these days to correct, cleanup, and enhance both the visual and audio aspects of these old, historic films? Instead, they blow the money to have someone compose a contemporary soundtrack!?! Crazy, isn't it?
This review is already too long, but let me just mention that I had been curious for awhile to see the Spanish production that I've heard so much about as being superior. Personally, I did not think it was superior. The actor that plays Dracula has big ears and always seems to have some sort of goofy smile - I found nothing sinister, suave, or hypnotic about him. Nor did I find the lighting or camera angles more dramatic. The actor who plays Renfield, while found in the cargo section of the boat is just laughing like he heard a really funny joke, nothing scary there or implication that he's insane, whereas, Dwight Frye's acting in the same scene (in the American production), when the police open the hatch and look down into the cargo area, there's Renfield staring up at them with eyes wide open in a trance and he's letting out a frighting half groan, half laugh as only someone who is deeply demented and raving mad would do. What I did find interesting about the Spanish version was that it contained more dialogue and explained some scenes in greater detail. I think part of the mystique that makes the American version so eerie is it's silence and minimal dialogue. Remember, it's director, Tod Browning had just come from directing silent pictures where visually the set and actors had to convey what would be normally be revealed through dialogue. And it's this "non-wordiness" that is very effective in adding mystique and suspense that culminates in a film that penetrates a deeper and lingering horror that is so much more successful than the graphic slice-n-dice, blood, gut and gore movies that comprise the horror movies of today.』

David only seems like a nice guy until he gets upset by the girl's overly protective father. That's when hell breaks loose and the love-struck Romeo turns into a deadly threat who justwon'tgo away. ("Absolute Horror") 『"The Evil Dead" was originally turned down by all the major Hollywood movie studios due to its graphic depiction of evil and gore, but a European studio finally released the film after it was previewed at the Cannes Film Festival. Budgeted at around $300,000, the film would become a modest hit at the boxoffice and ultimately garner a cult following after it was released on home video and DVD. The story deals with five college students who embark themselves on a deserted cabin in Tennessee. When they find an audio recording that releases evil spirits all hell breaks loose. Don't watch this if you have a weakness for scary films as "The Evil Dead" is probably the most gruesome horror flick I have ever witnessed, even more so than "The Exorcist". This is the beginning of an epic trilogy that will change your life&give you the ability to become immortal forever.』 『Director Sam Raimi's first film has achieved legendary status since its 1982 release, and for good reason. Though perhaps not as widely seen as its two sequels, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE EVIL DEAD is arguably the best of the three. It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash (Bruce Campbell). So, Ash is left with no other way to survive than to dismember the living corpses of his sister, girlfriend, and two of his friends. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film boasts some impressive camera work and extremely over-the-top gore effects as well as a sense of humor much more subtle than the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the two sequels.』 『In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Deadlacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2andArmy of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget.--Simon Leake』

『The six episodes ofThe Casebook of Sherlock Holmescontinue Granda Television's excellent series starring Jeremy Brett as as the ideal incarnation of Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional hero, while Edward Hardwicke brings stellar support as the courageous, good-hearted Dr. Watson. The suspense is strong and the acting superb inThe Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax. Watson is taking a holiday in the English countryside, where he meets the charming Lady Frances and then worries after she vanishes from sight. As inThe Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes puts Watson on the case and instructs him from afar. InThe Problem of Thor Bridge, Holmes is approached by an American senator (Daniel Massey, Brett's one-time, real-life brother-in-law) to clear the name of a governess in his employ, the lady having been accused of murdering the senator's wife on his estate and leaving her body on Thor Bridge. The solution is among the most complex and satisfying of the Great Detective's career.
Watson's proclivities toward gambling on horses open the door to the sprawling mysteryThe Shoscombe Old Place, which finds a famous playboy and equestrian, Sir Robert Norberton (Robin Ellis), in multiple jeopardy. InBoscombe Valley Mystery, Holmes and Watson are brought into an investigation of the murder of a farmer, whose body is found in the woods adjoining land owned by a wealthy property magnate. Holmes's investigation pulls the search in a wide direction, but the revelations are no less ghastly.
In the next story, based on one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's personal favorites from his Holmes canon, Sir James Damery approaches Holmes with a special request from an "illustrious client" (read: King Edward) to intercede in the marriage of an Austrian nobleman who almost certainly murdered his first wife. When Holmes is himself the object of a murderous attack; an outraged Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) has to channel his thoughts of revenge into a bit of undercover work on behalf of the detective.
Finally, Holmes and Watson tackle one of their strangest cases inThe Creeping Man, which borders on science fiction. The Great Detective meets an eminent, aging physiologist who has been behaving oddly of late, but the greater mystery concerns who or what may be behind the nocturnal appearances of an ape-like figure that moves rapidly through trees, terrifying the locals. Holmes's pursuit of the solution leads to a stunning revelation in this taut and imaginative thriller that Edgar Allen Poe himself might have appreciated.--Tom Keogh』
