(DVD review, not movie review)
『I must have picked up a defective pressing of this movie but my DVD screwed up the sound/picture synchronization. Side two is worse than side one. This alone makes this DVD a one-star disc. I've never had a problem with this in a DVD ever. It really makes it unwatchable. BTW, I bought my copy at Walmart in the $5 display. By all appearances, this is not a pirated disc.』

(Gripping movie by the master of horror! Great visuals...)
『Many years ago, I read the creative Stephen King book on which this movie is based and have always remembered it. King is a master at pacing, suspense and outright horror. This is one of his most unique plots, IMO. It kept me guessing...and reading long past my bedtime.

Now today was Stephen King Movie Day in my neck of the woods (no, not Maine, but Sunny Cali) and I just had to watch his Rose Red and The Tommyknockers. Both kept me on the edge of my seat, but I liked Tommyknockers best, so chose to review it first. I may review Red Rose later; it deserves it too.

I thought The Tommyknockers was a three-hour movie, but it lasted four hours. You can tell how much I was obsessed with it because nothing keeps me away from my computer for that length of time.

Of course, the movie was not as great as Stephen King's novel, but movies seldom live up to the books preceding them. I found The Tommyknockers very exciting, with so many twists and turns and "gory" visuals that it made me gasp over and over. Both Jimmy Smits and Marge Helgenberger were well-cast for their roles, making this science fiction adventure come to life for me. I couldn't believe what Helgenberger's character found in the woods and how it effected her and the entire Maine town where the action takes place.

I liked it so well, I went on Amazon.com and ordered a copy for a friend who was upset because she was out of town and missed this airing. When I like something well enough to put out hard-earned money, then that's a five-star recommendation to me.

If you decide to get your own copy of The Tommyknockers, be sure to lock your doors and keep some lights on. You will be THAT scared.

(a lousy stephen king adaptation)
『The Tommyknockers isnt a bad book, but this movie adaptation leaves a lot to be desired! What's wrong with just FOLLOWING THE STORY? What's the point of making changes that don't improve anything? The spaceship Bobbi digs up was supposed to be a flying saucer - what's the point of making it look like an overturned building? In the book, as Bobbi dug up more and more of the spaceship, she and the townspeople were gradually transformed into alien beings who were planning to leave earth and return to space - in the tv version, the aliens (who were still alive after a million years!) were only using the townspeople, making them smarter so they could dig the ship out of the ground! When the ship first crashed it couldnt have been buried underground, so why wouldnt they have just flown away? The tv version missed so much of the original story - for example, the aliens really werent smarter the way they appeared to be - they were more like idiot savants who could improve preexisting technology but who didnt really understand what they were doing. Also, some of the more interesting parts of the book, such as Bobbi realizing with regret that her individual identity was fading away and being replaced by an alien mass mind were left out.
I suppose they wanted to have a more "cheerful" ending instead of the one in the book where everyone dies after Gardener takes the ship out into space, but the original ending was better! Maybe one day someone will make a better movie out of this book.』

(Really, really lame.)
『This movie was very boring to watch, and I didn't care about any of the characters. I think I finished watching this movie just because I was too lazy to get up and take out the DVD. The special effects were really badly done--they used green light to excess, possibly just to cover up some of the worst "special effects". Lackluster story, characters with no chemistry, student-grade effects...pass on this one.』

(Best Horror)
『"The Tommyknockers" by Stephen King is one of the greatest movies. It will certainly give you the chills.』
『A small maine town is in jeopardy from a source of evil power not of this earth. When the town is overtaken by the force in the woods just out of town one man fights back and enters into its source for the final conclusion. Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. The Tommyknockersis a TV miniseries based on Stephen King's 1987 novel. An alien spacecraft has been buried beneath the Burning Woods near the small rural New England community of Haven for millions of years, but has now by chance been unearthed by Bobbi (Marg Helgenberger) while digging around in the woods behind her house. The structure in the woods begins to exert a glowing-green influence on the town, causing the people to invent Rube Goldberg-like gizmos, develop the gift of telepathy, lose their teeth, and form a hive-mind mentality bent on digging up the ship and revivifying the desiccated aliens within. Luckily, Bobbi's significant other is an alcoholic poet (Jimmy Smits) who needs to learn to face his fears. He also has a metal plate in his head that prevents the hive-minders from reading his thoughts and makes him immune to the neon-green influence of the aliens. Ultimately, it's up to him to save the day. Although the acting is topnotch, especially from Smits and Helgenberger, and there are plenty of gooseflesh moments, there are also enough plot holes here to fuel a very long and enjoyable evening's conversation. Why do the aliens start in at this time, when they've been causing legends in the woods for ages? Where does an alien ship buried for ages get all that dry ice? How does the Smits character make a living as a poet? One suspects that King's fine sense of New England characterizations is given short shrift here, and that the woods in his mind teem with more alien thoughts than the TV miniseries form could embody. Welcome appearances by congenial actors abound, notably Joanna Cassidy, E.G. Marshall and Robert Carradine. And there's a slutty postal letter-carrier played authentically by Traci Lords.--Jim Gay

(visual trip)
『"Fairy tale for adults": I hear that a lot, that expression. "Pan's Labyrinth" comes to mind. The Brothers Grimm collection of folk tales does too. Well as has been remarked, LOTS of stuff comes to mind when considering a picture like this. The excellent spotlighted customer review lists some that came to my mind too: Fritz Lang, Freud, Carl Jung, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Jean Cocteau, the Brothers Quay. I'll add Jules Verne and Fellini. OK, Roger Ebert mentioned Verne. (Ebert is a national treasure.) But what to make of it? "The City of Lost Children" is mostly a visual trip and less any sort of interesting tale that begs being deciphered. Read into it what you will, if you feel the desire to do so. I myself have mostly just enjoyed the imagery and I think the film is an unabashed celebration of film as primarily a visual medium.』

(Crazy, Creepy, Beautiful.)
『I came to this film reminiscent of the time I first fell in love with Amelie, thinking it would be another fantastical feast for the eyes. I was wrong - but only to a degree. From the get-go I was convinced I'd been taking some drugs and the beginning brought be back to the crawling baby scene in Trainspotting. Scared and disturbed, I was still intrigued. The more I watched the more I became engrossed in the characterization and yes - the beautiful, yet dull use, of reds and greens in the imagery. Ultimately, its plot is unforgettable and mesmerizing, but Ron Perlman's attempt at speaking French is a little bothersome and weird. It made me wonder if they made him a slow, lovable brute only after they heard him speak the language. Nevertheless, he doesn't speak as much as I'd thought he would and his acting is still wonderful and well-placed for this film. Rent it when you're feeling strange, curious and all-around adventurous.』

(Might be overrated.)
『I liked this movie but I wouldn't recommend buying it. Rent it or find someone who has a copy to borrow. I just didn't think it was as entertaining as everyone says it is.』

『The fantastic visions of Belgian filmmakers Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet find full fruition in this fairy tale for adults. Evoking utopias and dystopias fromBraziltoPeter Pan, Caro and Jeunet create a vivid but menacing fantasy city in a perpetually twilight world. In this rough port town lives circus strongman One (Ron Perlman), who wanders the alleys and waterfront dives looking for his baby brother, snatched from him by a mysterious gang preying upon the children of the town. Rising from the harbor is an enigmatic castle where lives the evil scientist Krank (Daniel Emilfork), who has lost the ability to dream and robs the nocturnal visions of the children he kidnaps, but receives only mad nightmares from the lonely cherubs. Other wild characters include the Fagin-like Octopus--Siamese twin sisters who control a small gang of runaways-turned-thieves--Krank's six cloned henchmen (all played by the memorable Dominique Pinon fromDelicatessen), and a giant brain floating in an aquarium (voiced by Jean-Louis Trintignant). Caro and Jeunet are kindred souls to Terry Gilliam (who is a vocal fan), creating imaginative flights of fancy built of equal parts delight and dread, which seem to be painted on the screen in rich, dreamy colors.--Sean Axmaker

(The Haunting)
『Eleanor Lance is called to meet at Hill House for Dr. Marrow's sleeping disorder studies, along with three other people. The owners of the house tell them that no one will be around and that they won't be able to hear them. The first night they all sit around and talk. Eleanor tells them that her sleeping disorder is different because she can sleep it is just that she wakes up because she thinks her dead mom is still living with her. Well that isn't the case now because she is woken one night in the Hill House bedroom by talking childrens voices asking her for her help. At first scared by the voice, she learns to avoid them. Later, the group finds out that Dr. Marrow is not using them for sleeping disorders but a test in fear. The fear is first thought to be fake but eventually turns real when loud noises are heard and objects start to move. Now they must try an escape the house before they are all killed. I enjoyed it. The acting is good and there are moments that make you jump.』

(The Humorous Haunting Of Humongous Hill House. A pointless remake of a classic)
『The Haunting is a movie originally made in 1963, based on Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting Of Hill House. The story is about four paranormal investigators who spend time at Hill House, a 90-year old mansion in New England that is said to be haunted. During their stay, they find out over time that the house really is haunted. The house seems alive and it wants to keep one of the investigators, Eleanor, in the house.

Fast forward 36 years to 1999. A remake was made.

I watched this 1999 remake of The Haunting on YouTube from start to finish. I had never seen it before tonight. I definitely wasn't missing anything (except maybe Lili Taylor's good looks). This was a pointless remake of the classic 1963 original and it fails on all levels. Robert Wise got it right in 1963!!!!!!!!!!! This 1999 remake? It's equivalent to trying to remake The Wizard Of Oz. Better yet, I felt like I was watching an elementary school play called The Haunting, except the actors were adults. Don't mess with the classics, that's what I say. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Too often, the movie makers fall all over themselves when they remake classic movies. But we all know the real motivation behind the remake$. It's $$$$$. They always say it's to introduce the young people of today to old classic movies. My philosophy is this: Just show them the original!!!! But noooooooooo, they've got to throw in the CGI special effects, otherwise boredom will set in on the young audience. And they MUST be color movies. No black and white - that's a no-no.

What's wrong with this movie? EVERYTHING! This movie compared to the original is like comparing apples and oranges. First of all, the story was completely massacred. It's so different than the original, but every once in a while you'll hear a familiar line from the original. Very weird. Secondly, the movie is in color. Color isn't nearly as effective as black and white for this type of movie. Of course the movies of today are going to be in color, but if you're going to remake The Haunting at all, give at least SOME consideration to shooting in black and white. The acting for the most part is wooden. The actors in this 1999 movie don't come anywhere near the actors in the 1963 original in acting ability and screen presence. Catherine Zeta-Jones (who plays Theo) has an air about her that suggests that she thinks she's so sexy. This is the character she's playing. Unfortunately, she's not nearly as good as Claire Bloom from the original. Lili Taylor (who plays Eleanor) tries hard but falls short of the performance of Julie Harris. To me, Lili looks like a young Jamie Lee Curtis. Liam Neeson isn't nearly as good as Richard Johnson in the role of Dr. John Markway or whatever his name is in this remake. And he looks bored and totally out of place, like he's just going through the motions and collecting his paycheck. Owen Wilson is no Russ Tamblyn. Those pajamas are, well, funny. And what's with the "carnival" room that spins around? Hill House seems like it's a haunted attraction and an amusement park rolled into one. I'll stop there, because it just gets worse. Actually, one more thing - Mrs. Dudley in this movie isn't nearly as scary as in the original. When Mrs. Dudley says the famous line "In the night...in the dark" for a second time, Eleanor actually finishes the sentence for her. By Eleanor doing this, it destroys and cheapens one of the classic lines from the original movie. Basically, Eleanor is making fun of Mrs. Dudley's sentence instead of being frightened or concerned about it. I also notice that the characters seem thin, like they lack depth. They're just sort of there, saying their lines from a bad script that was given to them. They look like they don't know what to do half the time. It's equivalent to teenagers from a slasher film who are just set up to be killed by a psycho stalker. No character development. And what's with the argument between Zeta-Jones and Neeson? Very weird. And it even turns physical.

Hill House looks more like a gothic castle than a haunted mansion, and it's HUGE. I don't know how anybody can actually live there. The place is humongous. The fireplace looks like it would devour anybody who goes near it. The doors in the place seem like they're 20 feet high. Everything in this movie is BIG, OVERDONE, and OBVIOUS compared to the original.

Black and white is the way to go for a movie like this. In the original movie, Robert Wise brilliantly used black and white with unique camera angles and shadows to create a haunted atmosphere. In this remake, color was used and it ruins the atmosphere. And the CGI effects? Totally cheesy and funny. I was laughing throughout most of the movie, saying, "What IS this?" When you try to make radical changes to a classic, forget it. You've already struck out. In this movie, you actually SEE the ghosts. They also appear in weird, contorted forms and all shapes and sizes, even underneath curtains, bed sheets, and a fist through a door. Weird. And funny. This movie is pretty much like watching Scooby Doo (fun and frights combined), except Scooby Doo is more frightening. You didn't see the ghosts in the original movie. You just knew they were there. It's what you can't see that is so scary. That's how it should be.

A skeleton that comes alive? This stuff is straight out of a homemade basement haunted house made by 8-year olds.

The lesbian relations between Eleanor and Theo is more apparent and obvious in this movie than in the original. This movie leaves nothing to the imagination. Obvious lesbian relations, obvious ghosts, obvious haunts, etc. Upon their first meeting, it takes Theo a matter of seconds to let Eleanor know she's a lesbian. She basically "came out" as soon as she met Eleanor. In the original the lesbianism was more implied than obvious. It left the viewer to wonder if it existed at all.

I find it interesting that this remake was made 36 years after the original came out. Usually when remakes are done, it's 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 years later. In this situation, it was an oddball 36 years later, in 1999. Maybe the makers of this movie were afraid that Y2K would prevent them from using their beloved CGI effects, so they made the movie an oddball 36 years after the original and released it in 1999, months before the December 31, 1999 Y2K concern! I'm joking, but you never know...

If you like the classic original movie from 1963, don't bother with this 1999 remake. Terrible. It should be renamed The Humorous Haunting Of Humongous Hill House. If Shirley Jackson was still around I wonder what she would think of this disaster of a movie. 1 star.』

(A Wanting Haunting)
『This film recycles every haunted house cliche from the black-and-white movie era, and the tone of the movie often veers into camp (especially with Lili Taylor's performance). The back story is muddied and incoherent too. It's a shame that with such a large budget for special effects and with so many talented actors, The Haunting doesn't generate more thrills for the audience.』

(Awesome movie!)
『Great movie for the home theater system.
Make sure you get the DTS version!
Highly recommended!

(Promises alot. Delivers little.)
『I was really stoked to watch this movie. And I honestly enjoyed the first half of the it - the setup. I love the actors here. The look and feel of the picture was great, dug the vibe. A bunch of strangers come together for an insomnia experiment in a haunted house in New England. The Dr, Liam Neeson hasn't told them that he wants to study their reaction to fear. They stay in the house a couple of days and it begins to have an effect on them. Lili Taylor's charactor in particular.

That's about as far as I can go w/o spoilage. I'll just say it becomes predictable haunted house story after that. I didn't get the thrills I was expecting. Such interesting characters. Such potential. I've rarely seen a movie that was such a let down.』

『Suffering from the extreme bad luck of being released at the same time as the low-budgetThe Blair Witch Project, this adaptation ofThe Haunting of Hill Houseattempts to update Shirley Jackson's psychologically terrifying ghost story to the era of big-budget, computerized special effects. Does it work? Well, let's just say that showing isn't exactly the same as telling. A prime example of bloated studio filmmaking,The Hauntingtelegraphs all its frights so blatantly that it forsakes any of Jackson's subtle horrors for the remedial scares of a clunky carnival ride. The story remains basically the same, with four people called to an old mansion for experiments in the supernatural, but instead of getting inside the heads of its main characters (as the 1963 adaptation by Robert Wise did so well), Jan DeBont's film deserts character development for the huge, glorious set design provided by Eugenio Zanetti (Restoration). Thus, instead of a well-drawn story you get... a well-drawn house, one that four very talented and underutilized actors--Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson, and Owen Wilson--wander around in endlessly (as Zeta-Jones puts it, the house is "sort of Charles Foster Kane meets the Munsters"). Taylor, as the hypersensitive Nell, is the unknowing lynchpin in the battle between good and bad ghosts and gets saddled with most of the expository dialogue of the mansion's gothic backstory. Zeta-Jones (showing some spark) and Neeson (showing none) are sadly reduced to providing reactionary shots of the film's disastrous climax, which mixes hapless new-age affirmations with computer-generated effects of ghosts and exploding windows, walls, doors, etc. For this haunted-house story, take a quick tour of the breathtaking rooms, but definitelydon'tstay the night.--Mark Englehart

(Great Classic Halloween DVD)
『Great classic Halloween DVD.Acting and story lines arent that great but has been around since my childhood. It was great to add to my DVD library』

(Classic DVD)
『Bought this for my father who loves classic horror from when he was a younger man. He and I both love this movie.』

(It stands the test of time (for the most part))
『The film starts out strong with good character development. The cinematography and script are good but there a few places when the movie gets too melodramatic. I wish Bela Lugosi had a larger part in the movie, and Claude Rains. The fight scene at the end was very well done for its time. I am really looking forward to seeing the remake with Benicio Del Toro, and interested to see how faithful it is to the original movie.』

(Wolfbane and silver)
『"Even a man who is pure in heart/And says his prayers by night/May become a wolf/When the wolfbane blooms/And the autumn moon is bright..."

Sure, Dracula gave a face and a mythology to the vampire in the 1800s, but the werewolf didn't get similar treatment for quite some time. It was only with "The Wolfman" that the werewolf got his due, creating the template for lycanthropes everywhere -- a haunting, atmospheric story about a mildly creepy man who (through no fault of his own) turns into an unholy mixture of man and beast.

Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr) returns to his ancestral Welsh home after many years away, to reconcile with his estranged dad who looks nothing like him (Claude Rains). He immediately starts acquainting himself with his old home, including being rather creepy towards a lovely woman named Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers), who is working at her dad's antique store. He even accompanies Gwen and her friend Jenny to a local gypsy camp to have their fortunes told.

But after having her fortune told, Jenny is horribly killed by a wolf; Larry beats it to death with his silver-topped cane, but not before being bitten. You can probably guess what happens next -- the wolf turns out to be the gypsy fortuneteller (Bela Lugosi), and Larry's bite mysteriously heals overnight. And after being warned by an aged gypsy woman (Maria Ouspenskaya) that he has now contracted the curse of the werewolf, Larry finds himself undergoing a terrible transformation at night... and killing.

It's a sign of how good "The Wolfman" is that its dated special effects (hello, lap dissolve!) and prosthetics don't hamper it as a story -- it's an intelligent, slowly-unfolding story about an ordinary man whose good deed backfires in a big way. It's also less "boo! Scary!" horror than psychological horror -- Larry is left wondering if the dead gypsy passed on his horrific curse, or if all the talk of werewolves has given him clinical lycanthropy. In other words -- is he cursed, or is he insane? Not a fun choice.

And George Waggner wraps the movie in suitable atmosphere -- lots of misty forests, quaint rural villages, shadowy chapels and the occasional outbursts of shrieking and offscreen violence. The beginning is a little awkward (enough canned father-son "reunion" conversations!) but kicks into gear when the characters go wandering off to see the gypsies -- and after that, it's a slow bloody build as all the scientifically impossible things come true, and Larry finds himself increasingly trapped.

And while some of the werewolf stuff (including the famous rhyme) was made up for the movie, it adds a note of mythological creepiness, as well as some lovely incantations ("The way you walked was thorny, through no fault of your own...").

And Lon Chaney Jr. did an excellent job bringing a sympathetic edge to the werewolf, turning convincingly from a jovial engineer/aristocrat to a man haunted by his horrific change. The one problem: he isn't very sympathetic at the beginning, since he basically stalks Gwen (looking in her window with a telescope?) and won't get lost when she tells him to. Ankers gives a good performance as a local love interest, and Ouspenskaya gives a spectacular performance as the old gypsy lady -- eerie, sympathetic to Larry's plight, and with a dry sense of humor.

Despite a slightly creepy lead character, "The Wolfman" is still an enduring classic -- it's no longer exactly scary, but it is deliciously spooky. Definitely a must-see.』

(THE WOLF..STILL THE BEST)
『I CANT EVEN DESCRIBE LON CHANEY! BRILLIANT,ALL CHARACTERS WERE GREAT!!!! THIS IS WHAT IS MISSING NOW A DAYS IN THE MOVIES,GOOD OLD FASHION PLOTS AND GREAT ACTION AND ACTORS,GET IT YOU WONT SURELY REGRET IT,THIS IS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC!! I USE TO WAIT UNTILL IT COMES ON,NOW I OWN IT AND IM GLAD!!!!』
『he original horror classic that introduced one of the screen's most infamous monsters! Lon Chaney, Jr. portrays Larry Talbot, who returns to his father's (Claude Rains) castle in Wales and meets a beautiful woman (Evelyn Ankers). One fateful night, Talbot escorts her to a local carnival where Jenny's fate is revealed by a mysterious gypsy fortune teller. The dreamlike atmospheres and elaborate settings combined with a chilling musical score make The World Man a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time!』
Even a man who is pure in heart,
And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright.

If you haven't heard this piece of horror-movie doggerel before, you'll never forget it after seeingThe Wolf Manfor two reasons: it's a spooky piece of rhyme and nearly everybody in the picture recites it at one time or another. Set in a fog-bound studio-built Wales,The Wolf Mantells the doom-laden tale of Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.), who returns to the estate of his wealthy father (Claude Rains). (Yes, Chaney's American, but the movie explains this, awkwardly.) Bitten by a werewolf, Talbot suffers the classic fate of the victims of lycanthropy: at the full moon, he turns into a werewolf, a transformation ingeniously devised by makeup maestro Jack Pierce. Pierce was the man who turned Boris Karloff into the Frankenstein monster, and his werewolf makeup became equally famous, with its canine snout and bushy hairdo--and, of course, seriously sharp dental work. The Wolf Manwas a smash hit, giving Universal Pictures a new monster for their already crowded stable, and Chaney found himself following in the footsteps (or paw prints) of his father, who had essayed a monster or two in the silent era. This is a classy horror outing, with strong atmosphere and a thoughtful script by Curt Siodmak--well, except for the stiff romantic bits between Chaney and Evelyn Ankers. It's also got Bela Lugosi (briefly) and Maria Ouspenskaya, the prunelike Russian actress who foretells doom like nobody's business.--Robert Horton

(Very much eager to see this movie)
『I am very much eager to see this movie. But unfortunately, still I have not received this Goods. It is the third time My orders are not reaching to me, and they will inform that they are sending again, but never delivered to my address. I am UNLUCKY to watch this movie.』

(Great movie)
『I have always liked any of the Jaws movies. This is a great addition to my collection.』

(meets and/or exceeds all criteria for objectively bad filmaking)
『with such gusto and zeal and permission , this film bestows a huge unintentionally hilarious love clutch on the viewer . you've got to admire the fact that SCRIPPS INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY and SEA WORLD amongst others , gleefully endorsed this bowl filler . i can just hear the suits telling our director that "YOU'LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN" . to which i'm fairly certain that said director laughed internally and thought something along the lines of "PERHAPS NOT , BUT THIS ONE'S IN THE CAN AND IT'S GOT MY NAME ON IT" . good on him . watch with subtitles on for maximum admiration and captivation .』

(The Shark Roars Again)
『Seriously, the mother shark roars about five times once she's on screen and yet we still criticize the fourth movie? The only Jaws movie where the shark doesn't roar seems to be 2 (I thought I heard the shark roar in the first one [not the scene where the shark sinks to the bottom after being killed] but I maybe wrong). The script/story, though a joke, is at least a breath of fresh air than just rehashing the first one like 2 did. At least there's a surprise when after the baby shark dies, they reveal that its mother is somewhere in the park. The most fun I do have watching this movie is pointing out the effects that were supposed to be 3-D (seeing as how the effect of 3-D doesn't translate that well to home video) and stuff that the shark isn't supposed to be able to do (like roar and being able to go in reverse when inside the pipe). A very young Dennis Quaid is the elder Brody in this outing, working at Sea World (though which Sea World I don't know but I'm guessing its Florida). He's probably the best actor out of the bunch as everyone else, especially Louis Gossett, comes off as bland. At least they got some of the characterizations right, like Sean's being afraid of the water (he did see a girl get eaten right in front of him). I wish I could enjoy this one to the fullest but everytime they're underwater, I can't see a thing, even the shark is shrouded in the murkyness of the cinematography.』

(de javu, something creepy from my childhood .......)
『I've read several reviews on this film and I agree with the customers more than the critics. This has to be one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen by disney, until years later, I didn't even know it was by them. I was eight or nine the first time I saw it, my mom saw the title and was turned off by it, so I couldn't own it. The DVD is superbly recolorized, even the night time scenes make more sense, I'm not sure Anchor Bay could've cleaned it up this well, I'm glad I waited on this version, the only real downfall is the lack of special features-just a trailer, oh well. Jonathan Pryce is alot like Max VonSydow in Needful Things but obviously a lighter scale.
Despite being by disney, I can't suggest this to anyone under the the age of at least twelve, parents really should watch this with/or before their kids do, that's just my opinion.』

(Great story)
『Good family movie to sit down with the kids and talk about fears, regrets, evil, etc.』

(Great service)
『Our item came in a very timely manner and it was in exactly the shape advertized.』

(Wicked Ways)
『This Ray Bradbury inspired movie was something that was missing from my collection until I ran across this on Amazon. Rarely televised, it's a great one to watch with the grandchildren, at least from my experience. Could also be a good Pam Grier trivia question since you have to check the movie credits carefully to catch her name.
As usual, Amazon comes through with hard to find items at a reasonable cost and quality guaranteed.』

(One of the best of Disney's "dark" side)
『I saw this movie when it debuted in the 80s; it goes without saying that a LOT of time had passed since I saw it and I wanted to see if the chills still held up.

Bottom line: yes, they most certainly do. Jonathan Price as Mr. Dark is as fine a villain as has ever been envisioned. The carousel scene at the end is still one of the most chill-inducing I've seen in a PG movie. Perhaps the most haunting vision is the old teacher's dream of being the beauty she once was; she pays a hefty price for it, and I won't ruin it any more here; if you've never seen this though, the results are chilling. I cannot recall the actress' name. I just looked on IMDB, I believe it was Ellen Geer - and in the hands of anybody else, the scene would have felt phony; they found a real jewel, however, and she plays this scene brilliantly. The Dust Witch would also serve to scare me senseless as a younger man; she's still wickedly spooky 25 years later. Jason Robards seems a bit old to be the father, and he always did to me, but at the same time, he anchors this stellar cast and keeps the focus on the point of redemption that lies deep at the heart of the movie.

It doesn't hurt a thing that it's based on Bradury's novel of the same name, and when you've got fiction writing like that to draw from, it's really hard to screw the picture up. Definitely a five star for me.』

『One of Ray Bradbury's most popular and intriguing novels of good and evil comes to life in this spine-tingling motion picture. On a grim and gusty October day, two young boys encounter a distressed man who foretells of danger blowing their way. Soon after, the town is visited by a seductive stanger named Mr. Dark and his Pandemonium Carnival. Terrifying things begin to happen when the adventurous boys stumble onto the carnival's deadly and destructive secret! Beware: SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES ... and frightening surprises follow!』
『Ray Bradbury adapted his own novel forSomething Wicked This Way Comes, Jack Clayton's beautiful rendering of the turn-of-the-century fantasy of a mysterious carnival that literally blows into a small town to taunt and tempt the inhabitants. Jonathan Pryce (Brazil), the handsome but demonic proprietor of Dark's Pandemonium Carnival, preys upon the vanities, the delusions, and the regrets of the townspeople by granting their wishes at the expense of their souls. Jason Robards, as the meek librarian Charles Halloway, becomes his unlikely nemesis when his son Will, with his best friend Jim Nightshade (a deliciously dark name in its own right), discovers the secret of Dark's nightmarish carnival. When they become hunted by Dark's minions (including Pam Grier as the beautiful and mysterious Dust Witch), Halloway must confront his own fears and regrets to save the boys. Clayton captures the idyll of childhood in the fall with rich autumnal colors, his camera gliding along with the energetic boys as they tear through field and forests. The climax, however, gets lost in a cacophony of competing special effects, imaginatively visualized but never very terrifying, as if producer Disney resisted the uneasy undercurrent of the story. It's more dark fantasy than horror, a nightmarish adventure filtered through the memory of a man remembering his childhood in mythic terms.--Sean Axmaker

(This is not for the kiddies!)
『I just got this and had seen it before. Now I can not find it, oh I will.
Now if you like truly gory and scary movies this one delivers. Strong acting all around. The butcher is one evil hombre. Could use stronger words but not here. Hold on to your seats, even the wife pulled up her blanket with this thriller.』

(Best Barker Adaptation)
『Of all the Barker stories penned or adapted to film I can think of (Hellraiser, Rawhead Rex, Lord of Illusions, Nightbreed, Valerie Under the Stairs, Haeckle's Tale), this is the best. The director did a great job with the shots/angles to really give the film that extra level of creepiness. The acting was good, the script solid, and though there were some conveniences in the plot, the overall quality is of such it was easy for me to overlook that.

Other reviewers have summed up the plot nicely, just wanted to show the world that my thumbs are up on this for what its worth...』

(There's more to this than the gory title)
『Like "The Ruins", another horror film I recently enjoyed on DVD, "The Midnight Meat Train" is a horror movie that- gads!- isn't afraid to actually be horrifying. There's lots of visceral and disturbing material here. But it all serves a pretty good story, one that- due to its source material being a short story by the great Clive Barker- also has an energetic little "literary" vibe going on under the surface. So you get some metaphors and social commentary along with all the bloodletting by the crazed ex-butcher who hangs out in lonely subway cars. Other plusses: some naturalistic, easygoing acting by the central young couple in the early going, which gets our guard down, and a quirky supporting character or two. A small minus: some cartoony CGI among the otherwise painfully realistic gore effects.

Do yourself a favor and dip into the bonus features after taking in the movie. They include generous interview material with Clive Barker, who really is a fascinating guy. I never knew he had a passion for painting in addition to his writing career and activities in film.』

(Sci-fi camera shots bloodied with iffy plot and extreme gore)
『I started this movie only because it reminded me of a book, "Acceleration", that was about a boy who discovers the existence of a serial killer on the subway and has to wrestle with his own mind about what to do. Sounds familiar right? Well I figured "The Midnight Meat Train" couldn't be that bad since I liked the book's story. In that department, for me at least, the movie was a hit and miss.

I'll start with the pros and that was the first half (NOT including the bloody beginning intro scene). The main character, Leon, is a photographer and has prospects to sell his photos to a high to-do art lady. She poo-poos on his latest work and says that Leon was just too late in trying to capture "the heart of the city" on film. So he accepts her challenge and decides to work the city AT NIGHT BY HIMSELF. Long story short he captures a mugging/rape moment before stepping in and thus gets wrapped up in the underground subway murders by tracking a butcher throughout the city.

What I liked about this first part was, ironically, the camera shots and scene setups. The pace of the first half is actually really slow with Leon walking carefull through each scene like a photographer looking at the world. To amplify this idea all the shots are stunning, as if the movie is 'capturing the heart of the city' through Leon's actions. My favorite shot has got to be the subway's escalators that seem to pop up like some sci-fi alien before the audience can figure out what they are. The music is so subtle that I could just solely focus on the scenery that was filled with eye candy such as shadows and long shots of buildings. The best eye candy had to be when Leon gets back from the subway train and is just standing in the middle of the meat plant. While the camera's focused on him a worker is in the background slowly counting hanging meat hooks that sound in time with the quiet sounds of the music. Pure horror beauty (if such a thing exists).

Now unfortunately onto the cons, which is the story and second half of the movie. By the second half the director apparently figured out the viewers needed a little more substance than just pretty shots. Instead of a proper escalation of the psychology battle, we get extremely intense blood sequences. Now even I was a little squeamish during some of these scenes. I don't know too much about anatomy, but a human can't possible get bloody as quickly as this movie depicted. Blood by the buckets was literally thrown across the train floor. I have a hard time believing that the killer and his cohorts were able to clean all of it for every morning.

Speaking of cohorts, I had a big problem with the final plot. I won't be a spoiler, but what seems as an intense psychological showdown between two people turns into this conspiracy thing...just didn't work with the great pacing of the first half.

All in all I guess I didn't mind the movie that much. I think the amount of gore was unnecessary and even cheapened what the director had going for him in the beginning. This movie isn't for everyone, but I at least found something interesting about it.』

(How could this go wrong???)
『I like the director, I love the author, I love Vinny Jones - all the pieces seem to fit! This film is a HUGE let down. The lead actor just ain't got the chops to carry the weight of the role and for some reason the Director who usually has a great, fast paced and stylized hand with the camera seems very flat and boring with his shot choices and angles in MMT. Not enough Jones, not enough tension or believable aspects to make this a good film AND way too much terrible looking CG blood. TERRIBLE special effects.』

『I have to admit picture quality is not the best for BD standards but who cares, this movie is great and I love all the topics (time travel, tangent universe, CellarDoor, deus ex machina, etc). The main difference from the DVD version is that you have the Theatrical Cut and Director's Cut on a single disc, that's all. If you already have DD on DVD don't buy the BD. 『In the tradition of Urban Legends and Final Destination, Donnie Darko is an edgy, psychological thriller about a suburban teen coming face-to-face wit his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal leads a star-filled cast (including Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze and Mary McDonnell) as a delusional high-school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past - and deadly predictions for the future. This "excitingly original" (Entertainment Weekly) nail-biter will keep you on the edge of your seat until the mind-bending climax.』
『This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that devastates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly,Donnie Darkois a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride.--Tom Keogh

(88 Minutes Not 92!!!)
『After you read all these USELESS customer reviews, here is one you can actually use.

My mother ordered this movie for me and, much to my dismay, this movie is NOT 92 minutes as the description states.

Let me explain. You can hop over to [...] to confirm THIS:

When this movie was released, several minor cuts had to be made in order to get an "R" rating. These cuts resulted in an 88 minute movie.

I already have this version.

Now, according to IMDB, the "uncut" version is 92 minutes but I have yet to find it....anywhere.

I, for one, would like to see what was cut, and as it turns out, I have never seen the 92 minute version. Is that too much to ask as a die-hard horror movie buff?

If you do a search here on Amazon, you will see that ALL of the hits you get here say 92 minutes in their descriptions. Is this a marketing ploy? I think it is too much of a coincidence that the "uncut" version is officially 92 minutes and the DVD box CLEARLY says 88 minutes run time, but the descriptions all happen to say 92. Someone needs to change something, somewhere.』

『This is one of the best romero remakes ever made. This is a must own for any zombie fan.』

(How Much I loved The Remake of Night Of the Living Dead!)
『This movie was true to George A. Remero's origional concept with the addition of making the characters more 3D than 2D in the origional version. In this adaptation the characters are not stereo typed but real and more believeable. I have to ask why they didn't try to out run them in the first place! Bravo to this wonderful remake!』
『It's a ned dawn for terror when the dead come back to feast on the living in this contemporary version of the horror classic. Special features: full screen and widescreen versions, subtitles: english, spanish, portugese, chinese, korean, thai, director's commentary, talent files, theatrical trailers&more.』

(The Covenant)
『Four prep-school students discover they have supernatural powers. When one of them uses the powers for less than altruistic purposes, there are catastrophic results. Renny Harlin has done a fabulous job on this film. the acting was perfect, and the graphics were amazing. This movie is great.』

(The Covenant)
『I had never heard of this movie until my son told me about it. He knows how much I loved Twilight so he thought I would like it. No, it's not about vampires. It's in a class of it's own. I loved this movie. I've watched in five times so far. It is great.』

(THIS SUCKED, AND IT SUCKED HARD 3.5 OUT OF 10)
『Holy hell almighty! No wonder critics hated this film so much (A rating of only 3% fresh on RottenTomatoes.com). I knew this film was going to be really stupid, but damn it sucked worse than I thought it would! Shame on these producers because they are the same producers behind the excellent horror-action Underworld films, and shame on the director too; Renny Harlin who directed Deep Blue Sea and Die Hard 2 (Both great films). Bad Sony Pictures! Bad! This film is incompetent on just about every level and was obviously created for teenage girls; the same teenage girls who went crazy for the God-awful Twilight film. While this film is above the quality of the awful Twilight film because it has more interesting ideas to boot, but it still sucks pretty damn hard. The teenage girls will be the only ones who like this film about teenage warlocks with six-packs who shave their body hair. If this doesn't appeal to you then just walk away.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: There are four brothers who are known as the 'Sons of Ipswich' at Spenser Academy who are more than 300 years old and hide their powers because in the 17th century their kind were being killed by witch hunters. So they hide their powers away from most people. After awhile they meet a new student who seems like a fairly likable friend, but then they realize "Oh s***, the banished fifth brother has returned!" Now they must use their powers, rescue their damsels in distress, and destroy the fifth brother. LAME. The story is a cluttered incoherent, convoluted, and abysmal mess of storytelling.
MUSIC: This was obviously designed for teens... and it sucks. I hated the music, it wasn't horrible like Twilight's but this score still sucked pretty bad.
ACTION: This film is loaded with stupid special effects, cheesy fight scenes, it's stuffed with cliches, hot women who are too stupid to save themselves, and scene with a locker room of naked men, YAY... The only quality that can be derived from this atrocious film is the fact you can laugh at some parts because they're so bad that they're funny. Other than that you are left with one truly awful supernatural thriller. On top of the cheesy action scenes you are treated to an incredibly boring film as well. Crappy, crappy, crappy.
ACTING: These actors were terrible and there were no redeeming qualities to their acting. The dialogue was also a horrid mess that can't accomplish being even remotely believable. But that probably doesn't matter to the teenage girls this film is geared towards, they'll love any male actor who they is hot despite their horrid acting.
OVERALL: Unless you are a teenage girl who is intent on seeing this film just to fantasize about guys with six-packs and no body hair, a pointless and hackneyed storyline doesn't matter to you, if bad special effects amaze you, and if you enjoy terrible musical scores then by all means watch this film. As for the rest of us we'll just go watch Underworld instead.
THE GOOD: Those "so bad it's funny" moments.
THE BAD: Everything else』

(Strictly For The Gen Y Crowd)
『Oh boy, what a dopey, poorly written, poorly acted piece of garbage. The special effects are a joke. The main characters all graduated from the Paul Walker/Hayden Christensen school of acting, which is not a compliment unless of course you enjoy watching completely emotionless, wooden, and monotone performances. Plot, you want plot, well it's male model witch vs male model witch in an epic showdown filled with all of the poor special effects you can handle. Oh yeah, there's also some dopey chicks thrown in for good measure, you know, for the proverbial love interest/damsel in distress who needs rescuing subplot.

In case you're wondering, no, I did not pay good money to see this in the theater. I caught in on cable because there was absolutely nothing else on and because it was free.

This is a movie for gen y tweens who I'm sure will love it, as they typically don't care about stuff like plot, pacing, acting, script, or special effects quality. A little beefcake/T&A, lots of "stuff" on the screen to satisfy their short attention spans, and a sappy subplot love story and they're happy. Everyone else will most likely not be happy with this movie, not at all.』

(Nude Ipswitch Male Student Rave)
『A next movie of a who-knows-what-for mix of modern cars and Dark Age stories slightly watch-able for comic hints deploying some same gender affairs, handsome young actors not ashamed to strip before cameras and techno-tricks substituted a real human professionalism of Jackie Chan et al.

Something like The Lost Boysbut even lesser sensible.

In 1692, in the Ipswich Colony of Massachusetts, five families with untold power formed a covenant of silence. One family, lusting for more, was banished, their bloodline disappearing without a trace. Until now.

Four young students at an elite private school who are descendants of the original families who settled in Ipswich Colony in the 1600s, are bound by their sacred ancestry and special powers. When the body of a dead student is discovered after a party, secrets begin to unravel that threaten to break the covenant of silence that has protected their families for hundreds of years.
