(a chilling trip through the backwoods, Wrong Turn gets so much right . . .)
『Taking you deep into the West Virginia wilderness , director Rob Schmidt's vision of 70's style horror may not be startlingly original, but following a familiar path, Wrong Turn (2003) is a shocking and effective thriller, that contrary to the title, makes very few missteps.

Trying to avoid gridlocked traffic, Chris Flynn (Desmond Harrington) detours down a back road and rams his classic Mustang into a SUV, stranded in the middle of the road. The occupants, a party of five young friends are shaken, but unhurt. Flynn along with Jessie (Eliza Dushku), Scott (Jeremy Sisto), and his fiancé Carly (Emmanuelle Chriqui), head off looking for help, leaving Francine (Lindy Booth), and boyfriend Evan (Kevin Zegers) behind. As you might expect, it is not too long before some seriously bad things start to happen, as the terrified group encounters a group of grotesque mountain men, deformedby generations of inbreeding, for whom homicide is a way of life.

Making a break into the woods, the group is pursued by the freaks, who have deadly skills will a variety of weapons. The ensuing chase is highlighted by a suspenseful confrontation, high in the forest treetops, that features a jaw dropping kill. There isn't much down time as the film proceeds to a fiery finale. The mountain men are ferocious fighters, and die very hard. Created by the team of special effects genius Stan Winston (Terminator 2, Predator, Jurassic Park), the three principal freaks are designated according to their appearance, as One-Eye, Three Finger, and Saw-Tooth.

Wrong Turn takes a while to get going, but once things break open, the story flows pretty smoothly, with good pacing that provides shocks and thrills, all the way to the end. Accepting killer mountain men, is the major roadblock, in what is otherwise a pretty credible tale, that features some rather memorable kills. The acting is solid, and the story moves forward without being sidetracked or slowed by insipid dialog, or extraneous scenes.

This edition has been out for a while, and is a pretty solid package. The dual sided disc contains fullscreen and widescreen versions of the film, with various extra features spread on each side. A commentary track with Rob Schmidt, Eliza Dushku, and Desmond Harrington is available on both versions. The extras include featurettes on the late Stan Winston, Eliza Dushku, and the film's special effects. Wrong Turn is highly recommended to fans of the backwoods horror genre.』

("Horror At Its Absolute Best")
『I first discovered "Wrong Turn" when I was scanning through my TV late one night and saw it on a movie channel. I had never heard of it but read the info on my television guide and decided to give it a try. I am a sucker for a good scary film and I was not at all disappointed by "Wrong Turn". The film is about a bunch of young people in their early twenties whose car breaks down in the backwoods on a long deserted stretch of an abandoned road in West Virginia. What happens to them as the movie unfolds is horrific as these people come in contact with a bunch of in-breeders who feed off human beings. The scenes are excellently directed and acted, the action is bone-chilling, and the suspence of it all will leave you breathless. If your a fan of films like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Wrong Turn" will not let you down. This film, which was a huge boxoffice hit, was followed by "Wrong Turn 2" that was released directly to DVD. Also, just in time for Halloween, "Wrong Turn 3-Left For Dead" arrives in DVD stores in October, 2009. This particular DVD version of "Wrong Turn" features both the widescreen and full screen editions of the movie as well as many bonuses. There is commentary by director Rob Schmidt and its stars Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku, 4 featurettes are included on the making of the film, and much more.』

(unconvincing)
『I don't see how this film could have received such a high average rating.

To me everything about the film was unconvincing: the acting, the story, and the directing. There's a few gory scenes here and there, and a couple of scary moments, but that's about it.
It's not consistent in keeping up the suspense, and the mystery surrounding the twisted killers is lost too early the film.

To me this film was just background noise, even in mediocre films there's often at least one factor that carries the film through: acting, story, directing...but this film has none of that.
They pumped alot of money into the film and hired a well-known actor and actress, but they should have spent the money developing a more interesting script instead.
I think that's the core of my complaints, it's just not interesting at all to watch, there's nothing that drew me into the film, and I didn't really care if the victims died.

There's been some good horror movies made in recent years such as Hostel, the House of Wax, and the new version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre...but Wrong Turn is not of the same caliber as those.
Even good horror movies need a good storyline.

(missing quality)
『Dvd was sent without the cover. in blank a cover ,this item description was not like that. very unhappy and dissapointed.』

(Very good and suspenceful)
『I really enjoyed this movie it was extremely suspenceful in parts and I was glued to the screen. The charaters where beliveable and well-developed and well acted particularly by Kevin Zegers and Eliza Dushku.

Two cars collide on a short cut road - ostensibly they both took a "wrong turn" to get there - so two of thm stay by the cars to watch their stuff while the others head off into the woods in search for help.

Little do they know that a family of inbred cannibal rednecks live nearby and begin hunting them diown and killing them off one-by-one.

The deaths scnes were pretty good and there was quite a bit of gore and A LOT of suspence. It really makes you care about the characters, too. In slasher movies in normally rooting for the killer bu theres was times when I felt like screaming "RUN!!" at the screen.

Looking at reviews this is a love-it-or-hate-it movie. I loved it and would deffinatly reccomend it.』

『An indescribable nightmare begins when a group of young friends is stranded on an isolated road deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, with no hope of rescue. Desperate and fearing for their lives, the horror surges as they find themselves relentlessly pursued by a force of evil beyond their imagination! Featuring a hip ensemble of up-and-coming young stars, this blood-curdling epic is a shock-a-minute horror rush that will leave you screaming for more!』
『Sultry Eliza Dushku runs for her life in a snug white tanktop, pursued by inbred backwoods cannibals inWrong Turn. Dushku (Bring It On,Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a clump of other attractive young people (includingSix Feet Under's Jeremy Sisto and Desmond Harrington ofWe Were Soldiers) get waylaid in the deep West Virginia wilds by a trio of grotesque mountain men, all given realistic ugliness by makeup artist Stan Winston (Interview with the Vampire,Terminator 2).Wrong Turnis the sort of movie where you know who's going to die by the order they appear in the credits, but fans of the inbred backwoods cannibals genre (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,The Hills Have Eyes) will find much to savor, particularly the scene in which Dushku and Harrington are trapped under a squalid bed while the inbred backwoods cannibals prepare one of their friends for dinner. Grisly.--Bret Fetzer

(Overpriced rush job)
『If you like the original Japanese then this only has dubtitles (i.e. the subtitles are for the English adaptation which do not always match the original). And if you like the English dub, the final scene (after the credits) in the final episode is only in Japanese even though it was broadcast in English. Whoever did the DVDs likely treated this final scene like the previews after each episode which are also only in Japanese.

So we have a high priced item, especially considering that prices have come down in the Anime market, and they didn't even do a good job on it. And so far there is no word if Sony will allow us to exchange the final disk for one that gets the English dub correct. So I'm dinging them for it. If they do respond favorably I will create a new review with a better rating.

The series itself of course is really good, it's just too bad Sony didn't put more effort into a decent DVD boxed set. My advice for now is to wait till the price comes down or you can find it on sale.

Update 2009-11-10: Word is that Sony will *not* be addressing the English dub issue in the final scene of the series, so my two-star review stands. :-(』

(they were in a hurry)
『well, finaly they release the 2nd part of blood+, my fave anime, but i think that they were in a hurry to get it done, while overall it is good, there were a few things that dod bother me, 1. they left the previews and the final part of the final episode in japanese with english subs, while i have no problem with watching it that way, i kinda just would have liked to see it in english as well, 2. i dunno if it was just me, but when i had to change the language to enlgish and turn subs off, again no problem watching it in japanese but its just the way i watch it the 1st time, and there seemed to be long pauses at the begining of each episode and after break, unless it was just me, also the interviews are kinda messed up, the translator (sp?) seems boring and i dont think he is translating everything right and also, this is the 2nd part, so why do some of the questions seem like they dunno about 2nd part at all, well if you love blood+ you should get this for sure, but they are a few minor problems to those who want their anime expierence to be perfect, like me

like i said, it seems they were in kind of a hurry to get it out

and one last thing, they labeled the final episode name wrong, yes it is correct in the english translation, but the true name is Nan-kuru-nai-sah』

(A Cut Above)
『If you have seen the first half then this is a must see.
Many questions are answered..Who the Schiff are and how they came about. Why Saya was killing everybody in Vietnam 30 years ago. What was the promise Haji made to Saya. As with the first half of the series the music(execellent) makes the mood and the animation remains true from start to finish of the series. There are twists to keep interested. This half takes you to Paris,London and New York on Saya's quest to kill Diva. I will not tell you what happens as you need to see it for yourself. I hate reading reviews that give away to much of the story. There is no real nudity/fan service and next to zero foul language. Fight scenes are great and still a far amount of Blood.
This is the same style box set as the fist half. You get a total of 5 DVD's (full screen format) in 3 thin-pak DVD's-one on each side. Also you get Manga sampler and a knit hat, instead of a T-Shirt. Extras..only on disc 5 which is interviews and a few previews of Live Action movies. When you watch the Writer/Director interview you get the feeling that he wants to do more of Blood +.
Even though it is rather expensive I highly recommend this entire series.
In the product discription it says "Languages-JAPANESE" I ordered from AMAZON and mine has both ENGLISH&JAPANESE and as far as the subtitles I had English and French(did not check the French). When it comes to the subtitles the English version is pretty much word for word with the voice overs. Also there are still no English credits as was the first half....for me all those things are minor...still an Excellent show!!』

(I am certainly a follower of Saya!!!)
『I first want to clear something up, this second half (episodes 26-50) of Blood+ is in English and/or Japanese. There was a comment left giving 3 stars bashing the Japanese producers and crying about how it's only available in the Japanese language. This is not true so if you're holding back on buying this because of that you are being misled. This last half is awesome and comes with a beanie cap and a small booklet. The sound is in stereo only like the first half and the picture is in full screen as well.

The beany cap that comes with it is pretty sweet even for somebody like me.

So 5 stars all the way. An absolutely must have to finalize your Blood+ craving.』

(FINALLY.....I WAS BEGINNING TO THINK THEY'D NEVER RELEASE IT.)
『I love this series and have been waiting patiently for them to release the second part. This is an awesome series but most of the best episodes are in the second part of the series as we get to see some of the history between Saya and Haji as well as the history of Diva. You also get to see the growth of characters like Kai, Maio(hope I spelled that right),David, Julia, and the reporter who's name escape me at the moment. The whole series comes to a close that's all at once sad but beautiful at the same time. I CAN'T WAIT TO FINALLY OWN THE WHOLE SERIES!!!!』

(Pleasantly surprised)
『All the talk about this movie is torture. And so, that is what I expected to watch for 2 hours. I was wrong, but the movie I did watch was really good. It is more of a psychological thriller/horror movie than a gruesome gore fest (a la Hostel or Saw). The story interested me, the plot moved at a good pace, the acting was extremely well done, and overall I liked what I saw.

Audition is about a widower who lives with his teenage son. One day, his says he should take a wife and find some happiness. And so the guy decides that this is what he would like to do, but he is so old that he needs for the perfect woman sooner rather than later. Joking with a friend over drinks, they decide to hold an audition. From the women who audition, he will select a woman to date. And he finds the perfect woman, but she is obviously not who she says she is. Some crazy scenes ensue, time lapses, and mysteries abound as we watch their relationship. I won't spoil anything for you...

I like this film. It was smart and creepy. A well done film that is not what everybody has been telling you about. And even though it's now 10 years old, it is still good. Recommended.

(COMA IN A BOX - OR 2 HOURS OF TOTAL BORDOM)
『What a HUGE disappointment. This so called Blu-Ray edition was a total waste of 115 minutes. I would have been more entertained wathcing a block of ice melt. Big hype and no delivery. If you want to experience a temporary coma, watch this movie. Do not buy it as you can have my copy (Blu-Ray). If you don't want it, I will give it to someone I really do not like. (Maybe ex #1, but even she does not deserve this king of mental agony and extreem bordom.) This is perhaps the slowest movie I have ever seen. No soundtrack. English sub-titles. (This is not a problem for me as I was enthralled and totally imersed in Downfall, which was in German. A superb movie about a very dark part of our history.) It was not clear as to why the star was so demented. The premis of the audition was OK, but the rest of the movie was just stupid. (Don't be taken in by the big mystery sack. It too was way over-hyped.) How could so many think this was scary or entertaining or even a moderately good movie. If you want to waste two hours of your time, you now have a way to do so. Oh, and the Blu-Ray edition looked grainy with no crispness. Just one more of the many things wrong with this terrible excuse for a horror movie. Lemon Drop Martini』

(Snooooze)
『Unquestionably one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The pacing is dreadful, the dialogue insipid, and the pay-off is ultimately flaccid. In the first hour...nothing happens. And I DO mean nothing. Secondary characters are by and large unnecessary, and Asami's motivation for her actions is not well justified. The Blu-ray quality is appalling as well -- very grainy. Can't see recommending this to anyone. Stick with "Battle Royale" instead.』

(i expected a lot, i got a lot)
『i already owned the lions gate dvd which was a great version of this film but i wanted it on blu ray for the higher quality. turns out this one is great quality picture and sound and its got a bunch of extras. im going to keep the lions gate dvd and this one as they have different extras and are both good. highly suggested』

(Brilliant psychological horror thriller!)

Company executive Aoyama is a widowed man who's wife died seven years ago and needs a new woman. During an audition for a movie, it seems a sexy woman named Yamazaki catches his eye and he falls in love with her. He starts to go out on dates with her but she does have a deadly secret that will shock him.

Horrifying, psychological and stunning Japanese horror thriller that could be Takashi Miike's masterpiece besides "Ichi The Killer". This movie is one of the earliest forms of torture movies before the current wave done by "Saw", "Hostel", "Martyrs" and others as this one kicks you right in the groin as it's a tale about human monsters and sometimes dating the wrong person can be very dangerous. It's a very Alfred Hitchcock-esque movie that offers excellent performances and a very horrific torture scene that is guaranteed not for the faint of heart, anyone who enjoys thrillers and shockers i recommend this movie.

This Blu-Ray does the movie justice with crisp picture and qualilty sound with the film shown uncut and uncensored. It also contains the standard definition DVD as it contains extras like audio commentary, interviews, book essasy and trailers.

『New 1080P High-Definition Transfer From The Negative!

Deceptively innocent at first, Takashi Miikes Audition finds Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi,Suicide Club,The Grudge), a middle-aged widower of many years, urged by his teenage son and his film producer friend Yasuhisa Yoshikawa (Jun Kunimura,Ichi The Killer) to get out and start dating again. To help Aoyama meet women, Yoshikawa devises a plan to hold a fake audition for a leading lady. Reluctantly agreeing, Aoyama auditions 30 young hopefuls and falls for the silent beauty of Asami (model/actress Eihi Shiina), a former ballerina with a dark past. Their courtship veers from quiet romance to psycho nightmare, realizinga sadistic breach of contract between filmmaker and audience of which Hitchcock could only dream.(Richard Falcon,Sight And Sound).

Shout! Factory presents this 1999 modern horror classic in a new 1080P high-definition transfer from the internegative, with a new 5.0 digital stereo soundtrack mixed from the original audio elements. This special collectors edition includes 90 minutes of new interviews with the cast and a new audio commentary with director Takashi Miike and screenwriter Daisuke Tengan.

『If you want the full sledgehammer-to-the-stomach effect ofAudition, stop reading this review now. Just watch it and take the consequences. At first glance, Takashi Miike's jack in the box of a movie works like a romantic comedy: amiable widower Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) decides it's time to find a new wife, and a friend suggests holding a fake audition to find the right girl. It soon becomes clear that there is something wrong with Aoyama's choice. This is no ordinaryFatal Attraction-style thriller, however;Auditionslowly and carefully builds into a wrenching exploration of both deep male fears and the stereotype of the cute, submissive Japanese woman.Auditionis by no means an easy movie to watch--even hardcore horror fans may have trouble--but it will stay with you for a long, long time.--Ali Davis

(Hard Candy, Great Movie!)
『My girlfriend enjoyed this movie together after it arrived in great condition and in a short amount of time. Great movie and great seller.』

(Something wicked this way comes)
『I've seen this movie twice so far and it's even better the second time around. There's lots of foreshadowing in the beginning of the movie that was fun to notice again -- the "missing child" poster at the cafe, the playful questioning each other if faces can lie, and the toast where they announce they're going to "take it all".

There's definitely a creepiness factor in this movie. The movie starts out with a close-up of a computer screen and you see two people sending very sexy instant messages to each other. You get the feeling that one person is a young teenager while the other is a much older adult. When the two decide to meet at a cafe, your worst fears are confirmed. A 30 something male is meeting a 14 year old girl. ICK.

Ellen Page was perfectly cast for this role because she has such a baby face and small physique. As an audience member, you feel protective of her as she flirts lolita-style with him at the cafe. Other details that highlight how small she is add to the creepiness of what this man is doing -- like when he buys her a shirt in size small or when she puts on his very large jacket.

There are two main themes I noticed in this movie. One theme is innocence. An obvious example is that she's young, but there's also the innocence of guilt. Throughout the film, the man, no matter what he does, keeps insisting to himself that he is a decent, good man. The story he tells in the kitchen also pulls at your heartstrings a bit. This movie definitely messes with you!

Another theme has to do with deception. As mentioned before, there was the deception of faces lying, but there's also the deception of the internet. When you go on the internet, you can transform into anyone you want to be...but how honest is that image? Also revealed are the deceptive means pedophiles use to lure their victims as well as the deceptive means victims use to free themselves from their captors.

I was impressed with the imagery in this film. I just like little details here and there, like the way the window blinds moved, kind of like the shutter of a camera. A real good scene was when he stabbed the photo of a young woman he photographed...but most telling was WHERE on the picture he stabbed her.
I also like the scene that's the first turning point in the film. He's sitting on the couch, the scene goes a little blurry and you see something you're not quite sure if you saw right...and then the plot twist comes and you're taken on an edge-of-your-seat roller coaster ride.

The audience will need to practice some suspension of disbelief to enjoy this movie and if they can do that, this movie won't disappoint. The performances are fair on Ellen Page's part (she tends to overact in some parts) and excellent on the male lead's part. I was extremely impressed with his performance.
Overall, loved this diabolical, clever and twistedly funny movie.』

(Paint a picture, take a portrait (contains spoilers))
『Only in your heart do you believe everything that is true is real.

For others, they don't believe a single thing you know.

You know why?

Because THEY know.

In a world where technology and the internet seem to be able to hide everything we do, people think they can cover their traps by destroying their hard drive or burning their film. To a degree, it can be true--a hard drive full of pictures explodes and it's highly unlikely you'll ever get back; burn the film and it's gone forever, dust particles in the air as the last remnants of a dirty secret slowly turns to nothing.

In HARD CANDY, we learn one man's deadly secret... and one girl's desire to uproot it.

Hailey Stark is your average fourteen-your-old girl. She's cute, innocent, smart, and as charming as she can be. But when she meets thirty-year-old photographer Jeff Kohlver over the internet, she's got more planned than just a 'simple meeting.' After Jeff takes her to his home for an impromptu photoshoot, things steadily start to turn around as Jeff starts slurring his words. As Hailey continuously begs Jeff to 'shoot her,' his world slowly begins to blur...

... and thus, the game is turned upside down.

HARD CANDY is a movie unlike any I have seen in recent history. This psychological thriller could be compared to the grotesque, often-suspenseful SAW franchise, as well as several others in recent history. What's different about HARD CANDY, you ask?

For starts, it deals with a heavy subject--child pornography, a taboo subject you can rarely begin to whisper about without causing some kind of uproar. We've all heard and seen what it's all about, men and women who find themselves carnally attracted to innocent, often prepubescent children. But what do we NOT know about them? Their schemes, their lies, their 'she asked for it' excuses--they're all a ploy on their behalf, an excuse to get out of something they believe they didn't do wrong.

In the end, everyone knows what's wrong.

So does Hailey.

As the movie slowly begins to drag on, we begin to learn that Hailey knows a lot more than is expected. For one, she knows about Donna, the girl who's missing; and for two, she knows about Janelle, the girl Jeff obsesses over to the point of keeping letters, pictures, and even more incriminating evidence. What's originally thought of as a 'casual, albeit disturbing' meeting quickly turns into a torture session involving one little girl and the man she knows who did something wrong.

HARD CANDY is definitely an entertaining movie--I'll say that before I even begin to cut into the pros and cons of the film. It's suspenseful, psychological, entertaining; it's all these things and more, yet the true impact behind the movie is what's buried within the roots. While the film broadcasts itself as a 'psychological thriller,' I see HARD CANDY as a thinking person's movie, as well as a film with an amazing cast.

PROS:

-- The main actors. Both Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson do an amazing job feeding off one another from the moment the film begins to the moment it ends. As someone who has only seen Page in one previous movie, I was surprised how easily (and how successfully) she could transition from being a cute, innocent girl to something more than that. Wilson plays a perfect terrified victim. I think the best part about the movie is the cast. Although small (limited to only five characters,) each and every actor pulled their rolls off greatly.

-- The suspense. There wasn't a moment where I WASN'T on the edge of my seat during this movie.

-- The dialogue and interaction. As I mentioned with the main actors, the way Page and Wilson work off one another is amazing to watch. An innocent victim, a psychological nutcase--this is how I'd see a scenario like this playing out.

Sadly, though, there are a few things I picked up on when watching HARD CANDY.

CONS:

-- The castration scene. It didn't necessarily bother me in the sense that I felt it was unnecessary (because in a plot and story like this is, it was completely necessary,) but in the sense of how it was executed. When Hailey begins the castration process, we notice Jeff is in pain, but not expressing his pain in a way the viewer would expect. Up until that point, he was screaming over mundane (if still extreme) details, but when he's being castrated, he simply lays there, grits his teeth, and sweats. I can contribute this to shock, but it surprised me to hear that Jeff wasn't screaming even a little bit.

-- The 'clean up.' There were several points during the movie when Hailey is cleaning herself up that she completely ignores the obvious things that could get her caught (mainly the point in which she walks through the house soaking-wet.) I can only assume that she had wet shoes after she dragged Jeff into the shower. Maybe it's just me (or maybe it helps contribute to Hailey's selfless want to destroy someone she hates,) but regardless, it's one part of Hailey's character that can be questioned to the point of redundancy.

Despite its extremely-minor flaws, HARD CANDY is an amazing movie. Wilson and Page are superb, the story (though slightly underdeveloped) is captivating, and the suspense keeps you on the end of your seat until the movie's finally over. A definite watch for any horror/suspense fan.』

(Edge of your seat...)
『A terrific movie with equally terrific actors. Kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Ellen Page was perfect for this role before her sweet role in Juno.』

(Interesting and dark movie)
『I thought the plot of the movie was weird, but the performances were amazing. I also enjoyed the look of the movie and the way it was directed; very interesting and suspenseful. I would say it is perhaps better as a rental than one to own because I doubt I'll ever be compelled to watch it again, but it was worth watching once since Ellen Page is excellent in it.』
『A smart, charming teenage girl, Hayley probably shouldn't be going to a local coffee shop to meet Jeff, a 30-something fashion photographer she met on the Internet. But before she knows it, she's mixing drinks at Jeff's place and stripping for an impromptu photo shoot. It's Jeff's lucky night. But Hayley isn't as innocent as she looks, and the night takes a turn when she begins to impose a hard-hitting investigation on Jeff in an attempt to reveal his possibly scandalous past.』
『The supercharged possibilities of a single set and two amped-up actors are explored inHard Candy, a twisted cocktail with a poison kicker. After a flirtatious encounter in an online chat room, two people agree to meet for coffee: a 32-year-old man (Patrick Wilson) and a 14-year-old girl (Ellen Page). They quickly advance to his house, and just as quickly, the apparent pedophilic seduction morphs into something else entirely. After the tables turn,Hard Candybecomes a tale of revenge and torture that might have tempted a filmmaker like Park Chanwook. Here, first-time feature director David Slade opts for a slick look that stays close to the actors, and you can't really blame him--this movie is like a conceptual, more-than-slightly unbelievable off-Broadway play, a showcase for actors and "controversial" ideas. Those actors are strong: Patrick Wilson (Angels in America,Phantom of the Opera) is every bit as creepy as he needs to be, and Ellen Page has nothing short of a triumph. The Canadian actress was around 18 when she shot the film, but looks like an adolescent, which makes her authoritative wrath all the more shocking to witness. The provocations ofHard Candysometimes seem arbitrary or forced, but Page's electrifying performance can't be denied, or dismissed.--Robert Horton

(A REAL HOOT!!!!)
『This is a one of a kind - a true cult film. The director of PHANTASM and Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley. What more does one have to say? It is a riot. An Egyptian Mummy who comes to a rest home and begins killing it's residents -- and only Elvis and JFK (Ossie Davis) can stop it! Elvis in a walker -- he threw out his hip with a karate kick. It's common for people to tell you everything about the film to the point where you ask yourself, "Why see it? I know everything." So I won't. Based on a story by Texas author Joe R. Lansdale (whom I have met, a damned nice guy from Nagagoches, Texas who always runs an Akido school -- "I call it my whoop-ass school of Akider, 'cause it rhymes with mesqueteer.") Interesting extras, including a bewildered Elvis commenting on the film! As the Beatles once said, "A good time is guaranteed for all."

(Bubba Ho-Tep)
『Outstanding Off-beat Movie, Cast is GREAT!
Extra features are the best! Happy Happy, Joy Joy!』

(Bubba Ho-Tep)
『Bubba Ho-Tep is based on a short story by Joe R. Lansdale featuring two main characters that are cultural icons and a mummy. Obviously, this is not your typical Hollywood movie. Bubba Ho-Tep is a movie with a beyond-minuscule budget that has gained quite a cult following over the last 6 years. I didn't love the movie, but I found it hard not to admire it.

Bruce Campbell plays Elvis Presley, a resident at an East Texas nursing home. Of course, no one believes that he's Elvis because Elvis is dead. Years earlier, weary of fame, Elvis traded places with an impersonator under the condition that he could return to his real life whenever he wished. Unfortunately, all of his documentation was lost in a barbecue accident and now he's just a delusional old guy with a growth in a rather unfortunate area. Another resident is John F. Kennedy (the wonderful Ossie Davis) who claims his assassination was staged by Lyndon Johnson and he was dyed as a result. After scarab beetles are found wandering the nursing home, the two men discover that a soul-sucking Egyptian mummy is afoot.

From it's opening title card (providing us with amusing definitions of both "bubba"&"Ho-tep") to it's final scene, Bubba Ho-Tep is a ridiculous, yet amusing B-movie.

The film is directed by Don Coscarelli, better known for his four Phantasm films. Here, he's made a unique and meditative horror-comedy that, love it or hate it, is unlike anything you've ever seen.

Calling it a horror-comedy isn't quite appropriate. This is a film that really struggles to fit into one particular genre, especially as it's not horrific enough to be a horror film nor is it funny enough to be a comedy.

If it's story and execution doesn't appeal to your cinematic palette, it's hard not to appreciate Bruce Campbell's performance, as he completely disappears into his role as Elvis. Casting is pivotal in a movie like this and miscasting could've taken away all credibility from the film. Campbell doesn't just make you believe that he believes he's Elvis but that he IS Elvis.

Bubba Ho-Tep is not perfect and how can it be? It has Elvis and JFK battling a mummy, but it has real talent both behind and in front of the camera. There certainly needs to be a substantial amount of suspended disbelief going into this movie to really enjoy it; but Bubba Ho-Tep is charming and completely unlike anything I've ever seen. I recommend it, but be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

GRADE: B-』

(A departure, but very impressive.)
『First, I gotta say, I am a fan of Bruce and have been for years. I have Xena and Hercules on DVD, as well as Army of Darkness, Brisco County JR., Jack of all Trades, and 3 other movies... This one, Bubba Ho-Tep, is actually a departure for Bruce Campbell, a well thought out and surprisingly well written picture. There is very little that could be termed as sillyness, as in The Screaming Brain or Jack of all Trades. Instead, we get a remarkable performance from Bruce as an aging Elvis Presley - and not the stupid Elvis from his own motion picture days... no, we get a thoughtful introspective Elvis, with a portrayal of real humanity and regrets of his frivolous lifestyle during his days as the rock legend. Campbell is actually believable in this role and I think it is his strongest acting performance to date. And Ossie Davis quite simply added to the all around believability of this absurd scenario. I was amazed at how easy it was to suspend my own disbelief and go along for the ride... This DVD is well worth taking a chance on if you want more than the usual sillyness.』

(I don't get it)
『I am a huge Bruce Campbell fan but this movie is weak. NOW, before you throw me to the cavern demon let me tell you this is just not what I expected. Very slow paced and excrutiatingly painful to watch. There were tons of room for Elvis humour but just falls short as if we only knew of Elvis from the tabloids? Bruce is awesome as always but this was too weird rather than upbeat like My Name is Bruce. This was more middle class fare as if the masses care about a film like this-more hehe lamo like like sex in the city or something where I can hear the uptights chuckle on the golf course or the housewives snicker at the 'mild' humour.

Why a mummy? (ok Bubba HO TEP I get it) but werewolves/vampires would have been more exciting lore.

Phantasm is one of my all time favorite films but Coscerelli is hit and miss like John Carpenter (remember 'Prince of Darkness? Ahck!!!). I forced myself to like it only because Bruce does a great Elvis. I suppose the crude penis jokes (altho funny) are no substitute for true clever humour.』

『Mud Creek, Texas, is about to get all shook up. When mysterious deaths plague the Shady Rest retirement home, it's up to an aging, cantankerous "Elvis" (Bruce Campbell) and a decrepitand black"JFK" (Ossie Davis) to defeat a 3,000-year-old-Egyptian mummy with a penchant for sucking human souls! Can the King show the world that he can still take care of business?』
『Don Coscarelli directs and Bruce Campbell stars as the King of Camp in this intentionally over-the-top schlockfest.Bubba Ho-Tepis partially about Elvis Presley and partially about the title character, an Egyptian cowboy zombie, but mostly it is about camp. The movie is equal parts story and back story. We learn through narration and flashback how Elvis didn't really die, ending up instead in a rest home in East Texas with JFK (played by Ossie Davis), who was dyed black and had his brain removed, presumably for reasons of national security. Campbell and Davis realize that something strange is going on when their rest-home compatriots start dropping off suspiciously. The whole movie leads up to a final showdown to the death with the Egyptian cowboy zombie who has been sucking the souls of their fellow residents because he thought no one would notice. The movie unfolds a bit slowly; it is, after all, a geriatrics-fight-Egyptian-cowboy-zombie movie. However, one wishes this self-conscious movie's pacing took its cue from the atypically fast-moving zombie instead of from the senior-citizen Elvis and JFK. In the end, though, Campbell is flawless as the aged King; his accent, intonations, glasses, and trademark karate are at the same time sincere and over the top.--Brian Saltzman

(Darker Than Average)
『Most vampire animes have this cool character that has all the powers and just shows off. Saya is not that character and for those who don't know this movie was made before the series. The title kind of explains the movie in a way, Saya is the last true vampire. She hunts down imposter versions it seems without mercy. Don't think of her is being completely emotionless though. The story isn't pushed in your face and you have to listen closely and look at what they are explaining to you to fully understand it. Most people will write this one off saying it's just a violent vampire movie. They just took a very different approach. If you like Blood + which is the series, don't expect this to fall in the same line or you will be disappointed. This movie isn't as action packed as the series and Saya knows full well what she's doing. Also remember she is the last vampire which means Diva and Haji are no where to be found.

I enjoy the dark art work and the story is also has the same feel to it. Saya is alone and the organization she works for has no love for her. They worry more about just putting her in a bad mood. The ones she kills she feels closer too, but knows that something is wrong with the way they live. It doesn't go into how she ended up being the only one left, but it does show pictures of her past and she seemed happy. I think it was made in a way to leave it up to the viewer's imagination.』

(She's the last original)
『Your basic vampire is perfectly suited to anime -- beautiful, seductive, and opulant.

Well, most of them, anyway. Things are a bit different in "Blood: The Last Vampire," an anime movie that bravely throws out most of the vampire preconceptions, as well as plot exposition. It's not a total success storywise, but it's an effectively dark, moody piece of bloody action.

As the movie opens, we see a mysterious young girl, Saya, on a train. When the lights go out, she savagely attacks a man at the other end of the train with a sword.

It turns out the man was a Chiropteran -- a sort of bat-vampire. When her coworkers arrive to clean up the mess, Saya learns that the Chiropterans have infiltrated the general public -- and she has to go undercover at a girls' high school near an American military base. She isn't happy about it, but goes anyway.

Saya begins snooping around for evidence of Chiropterans, and finds it -- a pair are disguised as ordinary high school girls. But when she corners them, a timid nurse accidentally gets involved in the bloodbath that ensues -- and a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the mysterious Saya and her monstrous prey.

"Blood: The Last Vampire" is one of those movies where the plot isn't the overwhelming force. In fact, the actual story isn't much -- it feels like tuning into an episode of a weekly TV show, without much explanation for who Saya is and what is going on. And after the first third, the movie is pretty much entirely devoted to "Saya hacks and slashes her way through the school while the nurse screams a lot."

But the visual presentation is stunning -- every scenes is saturated with shadows and vague, pale light. And while many scenes are quiet and almost motionless, the action scenes explode with kinetic energy, splashes of gore, and occasionally a raging fire. And when Saya jumps into action, the entire world seems to speed up into a blur of violence and splattered blood.

One thing you have to say -- there are no stereotypically pretty, European vampires here. There's only Saya -- a cold-eyed girl who looks like Angelina Jolie's gothy baby sister -- and a lot of grotesque bat creatures, with huge muzzles and big claws. The most "human" person here is probably the timid nurse, but we never really get to know her until the end.

Since the live-action adaptation is about to be released on DVD and blu-ray, the original OAV is coming out on blu-ray, and it's pretty bare-bones release, except for the presentation of the story itself -- reportedly the OAV is presented in two different formats: the original film version, and a new digital version.

"Blood: The Last Vampire" isn't too worried about having a plot, but for splattery action and fast-moving vampire battles, it's a dark diversion.』

『At the Yokota Air Force base in Japan, a nervous American military is on the brink of the Vietnam War. But a greater threat exists within the walls of the heavily guarded compound: Vampires. A team of top-secret undercover agents dispatches a mysterious young woman to destroy them…she is the last remaining original. Featuring brilliant character designs, top-notch animation and a stunning musical score, “Blood: The Last Vampire” is a breakthrough in digital filmmaking, taking anime to a whole new level.』

(Extremely pleasing to watch!)
『I have watched this movie many times over a period of years. Bob Hope is at his best, and Paulette Goddard is beautiful and spunky! The dialogue is crisp and memorable. The plot and characters unfold perfectly. The clothing, furniture and architecture is the real stuff for the late 30's, including Edith Head gowns and even one hidden photo of a Varga painting. See the use of shadow to create three visual objects per scene, especially those with Willie Best. Just a super, very enjoyable movie!』

『What a fun movie! Years before Ghost Busters and the PC world of today. Hope is too funny in his laid back way. Off to Cuba to save the day! His efforts are funny, his timing excellent, and his fellow cast members make for a great adventure of giggles! So suspend your PC values and take it for what it was...pre-WWII humor with a wink at the supernatural!』

(One Of Hope's Funniest)
『This is one of my few Bob Hope "keepers," not that I didn't like the man; I just found most of his movies somewhat corny. However, as silly as this one is, it's also very funny and very entertaining.....and that's the name of that tune, as "Baretta" used to say.

The story moves fast, which tells you it's entertaining, and has a good mixture of comedy, drama, horror and romance. Paulette Goddard is a very attractive, likable female lead and Willie West provides a lot of laughs as Hope's valet-friend. Yes, his role is degrading if you're a black person, so a warning to those who would be very offended at seeing that.

All in all, a movie that a lot other folks would agree is one of Hope's funniest films.

(Splendid remake of Romero's '78 thriller)
『I just purchased this remake of Romero's thriller in HD DVD at a bargain price and it's a winner in many ways, an improvement over the original. Although the original had some political points to make, Zack Snyder's version is more focused on the myraid characters who find escape, temporarily, in the mall. Also the acting is much better here than the original plus the wide screen and Dolby sound pull you in on the horror that is to come. Definitely recommended for all horror purists and zombie enthusiasts! Much better than the "28 Weeks Later" debacle.』

(Worthy Remake with Updated Flow, Effects and Twists)
『I am a huge fan of this genre of movies and have to say that this is one of the best ever. I've been enjoying "Dead" movies since the original "Dawn of the Dead" from George Romero in 1979 which stood completely alone in it's time and is still a great classic.

Having said that, here's what I really like about this wonderful remake:

- The updated setting, story and feel
- Updated special effects - superb!
- Faster flow that makes this a bit easier to watch than the original
- The new level of terror introduced by zombies that run full speed!
- Using the "Mall" motif again
- Celebrity target practice - fun!
- The baby - yikes!
- The acting and character development
- The armored bus
- The chainsaw scene
- Great action and stunts
- The completely screwed up ending - delightful!

All of these elements come together into a very satisfying experience for those who like this sort of thing.

(Dawn Of the Dead-I hate Remakes.)
『I didn't care much for the original and I certainly don't care for the remake, With more Gore to try to out-do the other. If your a fan perhaps you would appreciate, but I don't count Gore as Classic Horror.』

(Dawn of the Dead... Isn't a good remake an oxymoron)

Dawn of the Dead (2004): 10 out of 10: I sympathize with the fan boys that feel any remake of Dawn of the Dead is sacrilegious. You get an emotional attachment to films that scared you in your youth. (One on mine is Assault on Precinct 13 that was remade recently and I just know I will be disappointed with the remake. I am still scared of ice cream trucks as a result of seeing that film when I was 9)

Remakes themselves have a well deserved bad reputation. (Easiest movie trivia question: What is the best film remake? The Maltese Falcon of course. That Humphrey Bogart perennial was a remake of a 1931 film of the same name. I'm sure back in 1941 that there were a couple of people complaining that Bogart was no Ricardo Cortez and the ruined the story by taking out the affair and homosexual subplots. The first film after all was a pre-code affair.)

Dawn of the Dead is in reality a different movie than the original. This is no shot for shot Psycho remake nor is it the same movie with a glossier CGI coat of paint. It is a faster more intense zombie film. It is one of the best action horror films of the last ten years. The opening twenty minutes in simply one of the scariest action packed sequences I have ever seen. By the time our band of protagonists gets to the mall they are not the only one's catching their breath.

It becomes a pretty good sized group at the mall and you end up slogging through some slow bits as the zombies eat it down to a more manageable size. The acting is across the board good and the effects are suitably gory and plentiful. Director Zack Snyder wisely dumps much of Romero's sociological subplots and replaces them with a more timely commentary. (Instead of zombies as consumer motif we have shooting undead celebrities. And instead of an outwardly hostile motorcycle gang, we have a more subtle power struggle between the otherwise powerless.)

The updates honestly work, as a more literal remake would have simply fallen flat. Is Dawn of the Dead better than the original? I won't say. Is it one of the best films of 2004? Yes. Is it better than Romero's own sequel Day of the Dead? Good Lord yes.

(I HATE ZOMBIE MOVIES.....)
『I hate zombie movies, mostly because the thought of the unstoppable living dead who want to feed off your flesh and brains scares the S@!T! out of me.

I thought it was nicely down for a remake. The make-up was great, the special effects where good. It had a solid cast including Clint Eastwood's daughters first major role. They've been making Zombie flicks since the 60's, most of them stink, there like porn you can only go in one direction with it. This was not one of them, this was a good movie and it proved it at the box office.

I say it is definitely worth seeing and purchasing the uncut version. I did both and I hate zombie flicks, its just one of those films that when its on you have to watch.

My one and only complaint it the fact no one ever survives.』

『Packed with more blood, more gore, and more bone-chilling, jaw-dropping thrills,Dawn of the DeadUnrated Director's Cut is the version too terrifying to be shown in theaters! Starring Mekhi Phifer, Ving Rhames and Sarah Polley in an edgy, electrifying thrill-ride.

When a mysterious virus turns people into mindless, flesh-eating zombies, a handful of survivors wage a desperate, last-stand battle to stay alive…and human.』

『Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder'sDawn of the Deaddefies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was alow-budgetclassic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify thisDawnas an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart.--Jeff Shannon

(Very well done forgotten slasher)
『My first exposure to this movie was back in 1981 when I saw the tail end of it at my friend's house. His sister was watching it when I walked into the room. I remember seeing the birthday cake and its lit candles and Melissa Sue Anderson singing, "Happy Birthday...to me" to herself. That's an image I haven't forgotten. This is one of those horror movies that will stay with you. Even though it was just the ending I saw, it sparked a curiosity to see it in its entirety.

This movie was very well done. Good acting, a good score, good makeup, good special effects, and above all, a good story. This movie stars Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls from Little House On The Prairie). A lot of people can't believe she did a horror film. I can. It was a chance for her to shed her clean "Little House" image and enter the twentieth century - and in a horror film, no less. She drops a few swear words, drops her underpants, and gives one great performance as Ginny, a new student at Crawford Academy. She wants to be accepted amongst the popular people at her school. A number of these people end up being killed. But who is the killer? This movie will keep you guessing all the way through as to who the killer is. This movie is a horror mystery, basically. It has a lot of twists and turns. Ginny had been involved in a serious accident in the past that required brain surgery, so her mental state and lack of memeory could explain her fellow students' disappearances and murders. Ginny thinks she is the one who's killing her friends. She's lost her mind and can't remember very much. Ginny's 18th birthday is days away. What kind of birthday party will she have? Watch to find out.

This movie has certain elements to it that remind me of other horror movies, such as Carrie, Halloween, and Friday The 13th. Yet, it is very unique in itself. During the late seventies and early eighties there was a flood of horror movies that were imitations of Halloween, and a lot of them made holidays or special occasions dangerous, just like Halloween made Halloween night dangerous in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Some of these movies were My Bloody Valentine, April Fools Day, Silent Night Deadly Night, New Years Evil, Happy Birthday To Me, Friday The 13th, Prom Night, etc. Actually, Black Christmas (1974) was the first holiday horror movie. But Happy Birthday To Me is strong and stands apart from some of the low budget slashers or slasher movies with bad acting, such as Friday The 13th Parts I and II, for example. This movie has depth, whereas some of the above mentioned movies lack depth. This movie also stars the legendary Glenn Ford, Lawrence Dane, Sharon Acker, Frances Hyland, Tracy Bregman, and Lisa Langlois. I don't want to give away too much of the movie. You'll have to see it to solve the mystery.

If you want to see a well done slasher film from the golden age of horror films, then Happy Birthday To Me is highly recommended.』

(Wow, better than I expected it to be.)
『I picked this movie up, having read some decent things about it online. Most of my experience with old slasher flicks is that they are filled with exceptionally bad acting, so I was pleasantly surprised that all around the acting was pretty good. The quality of the picture was also far better than I've come to expect when watching older horror films, so that was a nice surprise as well. I felt like I was watching a more recent movie the whole time. The plot is good enough to pull you in, but the twists it takes keep you guessing until the end, even if at some points you think you understand what is going on. I got a great deal on this DVD and thought I was paying a nice cheap price for what would be an ok movie, and instead I got a great one. The makers of this one really got it right!』

(Overlooked cult slasher flick!)

Ginny (Melissa Sue Anderson) is about to have an 18th birthday party on sunday, she belongs to a clique and had a bad past. She attends an academy where she has some friends and during the week before her birthday, there's a mysterious murderer killing off them off but Ginny's father (Lawrence Dane) begins to suspect that something is going on as he wants to find out who is this maniac.

Violent and stylish low budget Canadian/American slasher flick became a box-office hit in 1981 here in both the US and Canada, often seen as another of those "Halloween" wannabes just like 1980's "Friday The 13th" this one does things different from both "Halloween" and "Friday The 13th". From J. Lee Thompson who directed the original "Cape Fear" and from the producers of the original "My Bloody Valentine" comes a stylish and thrilling chiller that plays like one of those whodunnit mystery type movies on making you guess who could be the killer, the murder sequences even with the horrifying weight scene are quite nasty and the ending is so bizarre you have to see it to believe it. The film co-stars screen legend Glenn Ford and the film became a cult favorite over the years.

This DVD contains excellent picture and sound remastering with the original soundtrack and poster as it's cover with the only extra being the theatrical trailer, this is a movie i recommend for fans of the slasher and horror genre for pure nasty fun.』

『Welcome to upscale Crawford Academy, where everyone– especially new student Ginny (Melissa Sue Anderson of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE) – wants to be part of the school’s most popular clique. But now somebody has begun butchering the group’s members. Could a deadly accident from Ginny’s past be connected to the brutal killings? And as her18th birthday approaches, will Ginny be the guest of honor at the most horrific party of all? Matt Craven (DISTURBIA), Lawrence Dane (SCANNERS) and Hollywood legend Glenn Ford (THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, 3:10 TO YUMA) co-star in this twisted slasher shocker from Oscar®-nominated director J. Lee Thompson (THE GUNS OF NAVARONE) that features – as its infamous poster promised – “six of the most bizarre murders you will ever see!”』

(Great SciFi)
『A modern aircraft carrier is somehow transported back to December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Very well done film. A family oriented film.』

(Time warp)
『This is a very interesting film and it deals with time travel. Imagine this..you're on one of the most powerful aircraft carriers of present day and you get whooshed back in time to just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I won't spoil it for future viewers, I'll just say I really enjoyed it! Kirk Douglas and Michael Sheen are excellent and add their own quirks to the film.
A must see. What would you do??』

(Great Sci Fi)
『This has traditionally been on of my favorites. An older film this boasts a very good cast and a what if scenario, if history could be changed. If you like military films and Sci Fi you may well enjoy this film.』

(One for a remake)
『The Final Countdown has always been one of my favourite what if movies.
I purchased it on Blue Ray and was surprised at how well it turned out. Most of the time when they take an older movie like this and put them on BR and you watch them on a large screen TV 50 inches or better it is still like watching a VHS tape on a big screen. The BR Copy I bought was like a VHS upgrade to DVD. By no means as clear as BR should be but much much better than I expected to get.
Hats off to the remastering team that did the work on these disks. BR and DVD.

Lastly. Would it not be cool for a good director and production team to remake this movie. And not ruin it with PC garbage or turning it in to a global warming commercial, or turning it in to a liberal anti war propaganda reel.
Wouldn't it be cool if it was done right with today's effects?

What if』

(Modern Classic)
『This movie has always been a favorite of mine. The special effects were good enough for the time and still do not take away from a very entertaining movie. The Blu-ray clarity has added a wonderful aspect to all the flight operations. This movie was made the cooperation of the Navy and everything is actual footage and not computer generated. The F-14s and the Confererate Air Force Zeros performed amazing maneuvers together. The cast is first rate and made the movie work. As an added enjoyment, watch the interviews with the "Jolly Rogers". Naval Aviators always have something fun to say and don't worry about being politically correct.』
『"...THIS IS THE U.S.S. NIMITZ... WHERE THE HELL ARE WE?..."

The time is now. The place is aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz, America's mightiest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier on maneuvers in the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, a freak electrical storm engulfs the ship and triggers the impossible: The Nimitz is hurtled back in time to December 6, 1941, mere hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As the enemy fleet speeds towards Hawaii, the warship's Captain (Kirk Douglas), a Defense Department expert (Martin Sheen), a maverick Air Wing Commander (James Farentino) and a desperate Senator in the Roosevelt administration (Charles Durning) must choose between the unthinkable. Do they allow the Japanese to complete their murderous invasion or launch a massive counter-strike that will forever change the course of history?

Katharine RossandRon O'Nealco-star in this spellbinding sci-fi action hit filmed on location aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz with the full participation of the U.S. Navy and the ship's crew. Blue Underground is proud to present THE FINAL COUNTDOWN in stunning High Definition with remixed 7.1 DTS-HD and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks for the ultimate in explosive home theater excitement.

『With a tantalizing "what-if?" scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans,The Final Countdownplays like a grand-scale episode ofThe Twilight Zone. It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-poweredU.S.S. Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 "Jolly Roger" fighter jets, made possible by the Navy's generous cooperation. That makesThe Final Countdowna better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill withThe Philadelphia Experiment.--Jeff Shannon
