(Like A Surgeon...) 『Jack The Ripper has fascinated generations of would-be detectives (including myself). The fact that this legendary serial-murderer was never caught has always brought chills. FROM HELL takes some theories about the case, mixes them w/ facts, and adds a bleak air of dread and doom. Johnny Depp (Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, The Ninth Gate, Sweeny Todd) plays an opium-addicted police inspector, drawn into the action due to his ability to "see" certain future events in his dreams. Heather Graham is the sweet yet tough prostitute, Mary Kelly, who assists in the investigation. Ian Holm (Alien, Brazil, The Fifth Element, Lord Of The Rings) plays a kindly old doctor w/ extremely valuable information. Thick w/ symbology, conspiracy, and mystery, FROM HELL plays (somewhat) like a Sherlock Holmes story, w/ elements of horror sewn in. This is a great movie for Depp fanatics, as he comes through once again. Robbie Coltrane (Harry Potter And The...) is wonderfully low-key in his Watson-esque role as Depp's assistant. Highly recommended...』
(ALL of this edition DEFECTIVE!) 『Rotten or NO QUALITY CONTROL - 4 out of 4 sets that I've tried have defective menus - They are so messed up and unwatchable that in some cases the bonus material cannot be activated - Thus making this 2 disc edition utterly useless! (Great work!) 『Johnny Depp never fails to amaze me. He is one of the bravest actors out there and will take on any role offering a challenge. This movie is great and if you check old photos of the crime scenes and the details, you'll find they did an amazing job sticking to the facts. If you're into Jack the Ripper stuff, this is a must see!』 『A clairvoyant police detective must stop the most notorious serial killer in history - Jack the Ripper - before it's too late! Johnny Depp and Heather Graham star in this "engrossing, stylish thriller" (People) that "grips tighter than a chokehold and cut as deep as a knife" (Washington Post)』 『Heavy on atmosphere and light on everything else,From Hellis visually impressive while lacking the depth of the acclaimed graphic novel it's based upon. Making their third feature since 1993'sMenace II Society, twins Allen and Albert Hughes approach the Jack the Ripper case with physical precision, re-creating the gritty Whitechapel district of 1888 London in meticulous detail. What they've forgotten is the sheer terror that gripped Whitechapel in the wake of the Ripper's slaying of five prostitutes, investigated here by a Scotland Yard sleuth (Johnny Depp) who uses opium, laudanum, and absinthe to fuel his semiprescient visions of the slayings. Heather Graham attempts a slippery Cockney accent as a would-be victim, while Ian Holm steals the show as a has-been surgeon with devilish delusions of grandeur. Violence is obliquely suggested or briefly graphic, but no matter how you cut it,From Hellis only marginally thrilling as it treads familiar territory.--Jeff Shannon』

I had seen previews for it on a horror DVD I own, and it looked decent, so I decided to check it out. I had read no reviews before watching it, so I was pretty open to whatever the movie had to offer.
I have to say, this movie was one he11 of a fun time. Bradley Cooper plays a struggling photographer named Leon, living with his girlfriend played by Brooke Shields. Upon having his work criticized by a prestigious art snob (they explain her qualifications better in the movie, I just don't recall what they are), he decides to follow suspicious, dangerous people in the night with his camera in order to truly capture the "heart of the city". He becomes obsessed with a creepy butcher played by Vinnie Jones, who also happens to be a mass murderer.
First, let's discuss the pros. If you are a gore hound like me, you will not be disappointed by THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN. There's a lot of gruesome stuff here, and the camera never shies away from the killings. There are also a lot of really cool camera angles and POV shots that really add to the movie stylistically. The movie is shot in a way that makes the whole city look muted, dismal, and bleak, adding to the film's dark atmosphere. At times, the movie is truly beautiful to watch. Vinnie Jones is awesome as the killer, totally believable and frightening. Cooper and Shields are pretty good in their roles, and their characters are likable enough.
Now the cons. I'm a fairly pragmatic person, so it was hard for me to suspend my disbelief enough to swallow some ludicrous aspects of the plot. For instance, Leon becomes psychotically obsessed with the butcher awfully fast. And gosh, he's pretty good at hand-to-hand combat for a frigging photographer. And I like gratuitous, excessive violence, but the fight scene at the end is just dumb. For instance, Leon blocks a knife coming at his face using HIS OWN ARM as a shield. I mean really? Seriously? You're totally surrounded by dismembered body parts, and you couldn't use one of them?
Despite all my complaints, I really had a good time watching this. I'm on the fence about buying it, but if I were to see it at a store really cheap, I'd definitely get it. It's a bloody, messy thrill ride, and you'll like it if you can get past the stupidity of some parts.

(Hunter / Gatherer...) 『Clive Barker's BOOKS OF BLOOD vols. 1-3 were far ahead of their time (the ridiculous 80s). I didn't think that anyone could capture Barker's stories on film without making a pig's breakfast of it. Well, THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN proves that cinema has finally caught up! Bradley Cooper plays the role of obsessed photographer with the perfect amount of growing bewilderment. Vinnie Jones IS Mahogany, making him a terrifyingly lethal creature w/ no other purpose than to serve out his blood-soaked mission. Mahogany is one of the bestüber-killers in recent memory. His only competition lately might be Beatrice Dalle's unstoppable berserker from the french masterpiece, INSIDE! The atmosphere of MEAT TRAIN is thick and caustic. A building, irreversible feeling of damnation hangs over everything like a bitter japanese ghost! Few movies give me that thrilling sense of dread and desolation. THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN scratches that maddening itch..』
(A Fun and Bloody Ride) 『I remember reading this Clive Barker story years ago, but somehow got it tangled up in my mind with another subway horror tale called "The Light at the End". What is it about Subways that make them such a great horror setting? I've rarely ridden on a subway, living in a rural part of America, I would actually have to drive a considerable distance to ride a subway, actually the drive to the station would make the train ride pointless. Still I'm fascinated by films set in and around subways. Maybe it's because they roll around underground through those long dark tunnels, but films and novels set in and around subways and the tunnels have also struck a chord with me. "The Warriors" cruising to Coney, the subway attack in "An American Werewolf in London", the original "Taking of Pelham 1-2-3", getting pinned in the subway car at the end of "Mimic", hell the only memorable scene in that flick "The Church" occured underground with the subway car splattering that dude like a bug on the windsheild. So yes for some reason subways in films have always struck a chord with me.
Well welcome to THE subway horror film. "The Midnight Meat Train" was simply fantastic. The basic plot is that a freelance crime photographer gets the chance to showcase some of his photographic artwork, if he can capture the "heart" of the city on film. The photography journeys out into the night looking to capture the city at it's most raw....and finds it with a mysterious and sinister butcher that he becomes obsessed with.
The gore and special effects are top notch, this is definately not a movie for the squeemish. The blood flows freely, but it's not gratuitous. Ryuhei Kitamura's direction is AMAZING. Some of the point-of-veiw shots from the victims' perspective are mind-blowing, the lighting is extremely eerie, almost as if the entire film were lit with the blue lighting found in butcher freezers or deli-counters. The film is very raw as well, you can almost smell the blood onscreen.
If you want something original, not a remake or "re-imagining", give this movie a try.』
(A dark secret beneath the surface...) 『"The Midnight Meat Train" is directed by Ryuchei Kitamuri. What struck me initially with this film was how beautifully produced, directed, and lighted it is. Each and every frame is exquisite, and I found myself watching with fascination as each sequence of events unfolded. Anyone who enjoys the paintings of Francis Bacon might find this film particularly enjoyable.
Initially we are introduced to Leon (Bradley Cooper) who is a photographer looking to enter the art world. He's looking for those special, one of a kind photos of riveting moments. This leads him to take more and more chances in the subways photographing often dangerous confrontations. By chance he photographs a man, Mahogany (Vinne Jones), who appeared around the time he saw a woman who was later murdered. He thinks there might be a connection, and begins to follow this strange man who waits in the the subway and then boards the trains at a specific time every night.
One night Leon goes too far and boards the train with Mahogany and discovers the dreadful secret of the murders. This story seems flawed though. Leon is spared, but why? We're told by the train driver that Mahogany is no longer able to do the job, though he seemed to be doing a commendable job right up until he met Leon. The transformation of Leon to murderer seems unbelievable, but it does add an interesting twist to the story nonetheless. There are other aspects of the story that seem to come out of nowhere for dramatic effect, such as the beasts that are fed these corpses. What are these creatures, and where do they come from, and how have they managed to stay hidden from the general public for so long? Why do they have to enlist a man in order to do the murders. Why is the train driver and other humans working for these creatures? Who is the train driver? The ending leaves more questions than answers, but the ride is nevertheless thrilling and fascinating to watch.』
(Midnight Meat Train 2.5 stars, Bradley Cooper 0 stars.) 『The Midnight Meat Train was an Ondemand leftover that Sid decided to jump on like it was a desperate actress with bad hair, teeth and a bad pink negligee as part of our October Horrorgreatsuccess. We really knew nothing at all about the film, and from the title, we blindly assumed it was an older flick. But then we saw Brooke Shields and Sack Lodge so we knew this was new school B. Like, it was shown on a mere 100 screens in its theatrical release then quickly put out on DVD B. That's what we were dealing with.
What bothers Sid as much as just about anything is potential unfulfilled. This movie was full of it, not good times. This started out as an awesome movie. Great premise, a subway that you get on but you don't leave unless its as a piece of Mario or Luigi Scallopini. Really cool killer(the big guy from Gone in 60 seconds). And to top it all off a killer female lead. Well, not her acting, but Leslie Bibb is a smokeshow. This leads us to problem number 1: How did Cooper not make her his mother-in-law in the first scene? That's not B at all. Problem number 2 was a huge lag in the middle that made this one seem about 3 hours long. Not cool when Sid was primed for some pranking, video games, and Monday Night Football.
The Midnight Meat Train was a decent movie that could have been really great horror. Another strike against it, it was bad horror but not really B. There's a huge difference. It ad some cheesy effects but not enough to make it B. Maybe it was Cooper's character's stupidity/wussiness. Maybe it was Leslie Bibb not giving us a full show. Whatever it was, this one didn't have it. This one would have been kept on the whole time in the old days with no payout. If young Sid was reviewing this one, it'd be a safe bet for 1 star.』 『STRUGGLING PHOTOGRAPER LEON KAUFFMAN'S OBSESSIVE PURSUIT OF DARK SUBJECT MATTER LEADS HIM INTO THE PATH OF A SERIAL KILLER, MAHOGANY, THE SUBWAY MURDERER WHO STALKS LATE-NIGHT COMMUTERS - ULTIMATELY BUTCHERING THEM IN THE MOST GRUESOME WAYS IMAGINABLE.』

I'm glad I bought and watched it now - I feel it's necessary for me to have seen it as part of the entire series - but it's not great. There are individual TV episodes that are much, much better. But it's not dreadful. Just not great.』
(Must own for X-Philes) 『X-Files: Fight the Future flowed well in the series for when it came out, I think in between the fifth and sixth seasons. Conspiracy theories, Well-manicured man, black oil and bees? You can't get better than that in the XF universe. More Mulder and Scully than X-Files:I Want to Believe, and a better overall plot, but I still think that one is a must own for X-Files fans too.
Right now, at $5.99 at Amazon is a great price for a movie who previously was considered "Hard to find" and was going past $60 on Ebay. I took away a star for pacing. There are slow, boring moments in between decent action and dialogue, and while there is good amount of Mulder and Scully, there is not enough of them together to rate an excellent 5 stars. ("Sshh darling, trust me...it's for the best!") 『I don't own the "Misery" DVD, but I have seen it three times, and each time, the movie is just as shocking and intense as before. Rob Reiner is the director, and adapts the Stephen King novel to the screen. Considering most of the film takes place in a bedroom, you're going to need a pretty good script to keep such a concept alive and interesting. Fortunately, "Misery" is full of interesting plot developments, and as the story moves along, nothing feels boring or tedious. In fact, two of the times I saw this movie were back-to-back on TV (thanks for that, AMC!), and I can honestly say I watched it both times, in a row, without ever getting bored.
In addition to Rob Reiner's great directing, we have the talented acting of James Kahn and Kathy Bates, both of whom portray their characters quite realistically and believably. The realism of their acting is partially what makes this movie so frightening, because James Kahn and Kathy Bates make it seem like this sort of things could actually happen, which is a powerful tool in horror movies. In addition, there's no way you can give this movie less than 5 stars after seeing the heart-pounding, realistic terror in the climax!
Well, my time here is done. In closing, this is a highly-recommended horror movie for those that want to see an excellent, entertaining and nerve-wracking work of horror genius, especially if you're interested in seeing the realistic side of horror movies. Thanks for the time, and peace.』
(Great Horror Movie) 『This is one of the three Stephen King books that actually turned into a good movie. Usually, the movies made from his books cannot hold a candle to his writing. But Misery does. Kathy Bates is fabulous as a crazy fan who thinks she knows the author intimately and holds him hostage and tortures him. James Caan does a wonderful acting job as well. Anyone with even a tiny dose of fame knows that sometimes people can interpret some really strange things from what you say or write. I hope I never meet someone like this. If you like horror movies don't miss this one! Power Path to Love』
(Misery-Good Steven King Story) 『Misery was a good 4 to 5 star Steven King story which I enjoyed very much. It concerned stalkers and fameous writers and must, therefore, be a subject close to Mr. Kings heart. Since my son and I are both fans of Steven King, my family went to Bangor Main a few summers ago to visit the town, take in some of the local tourist attractions and on site filming locations of many of his films.
We also briefly stopped in front of Mr. Kings home to take a photo. I hope this didn't qualify us as stalkers, but we also visited fameous Bettes Book Store in hopes of the possibility of seeing Mr. King (which we did not). We picked up some books and were treated to some interesting stories concerning Mr. King from the shops staff. Bettes book store also provided us a map of Bangor annotated to show exactly where many of King's movies have been filmed.
Except for getting a flat and getting lost while looking for some of these filming locations it was a great trip and I would recommend it to all fans of Steven King.』
(Kathy Bates at her best.!) 『This have got to be one of the best movies of the century, I don't care what anybody says,. it has everything a great thrillers needs,.. suspense, horror, great acting, a psycho woman who is obsessed whith the character heroine of a book and wants the writer to give her the perfect ending,..she wants a Happy ending,.. and will kill if she has to, to get it.』 『A "heart-stopping psychological thriller" (Joel Siegel) this Academy AwardÂ(r)-winning* film is "one of the best horror movies" (Time) ever. Adapted from a Stephen King story by OscarÂ(r)-winning** screenwriter William Goldman (All the President's Men) and directed by Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men), this chiller starring Kathy Bates (Titanic) and James Caan (The Godfather), is "a Hitchcockian kind of cat-and-mouse" (The New York Times) gameplayed between two cunning mindsone as sharp as a tack and the other as blunt as a sledgehammer. Novelist Paul Sheldon (Caan) doesn't remember the blinding blizzard that sent his car spinning off the road. Nor does he remember being nursed back from unconsciousness. All he remembers iswaking up in the home of Annie Wilkes (Bates)a maniacal fan who is bent on keeping her favorite writer as her personal prisoner for the rest of his "cock-a-doodie" life! *1990: Actress (Bates) **1969: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; 1976: All the President's Men』 『Based on the chilling bestseller by Stephen King,Miserywas brought to the screen by director Rob Reiner as one of the most effective thrillers of the 1990s. From a brilliant adaptation by screenwriter William Goldman, Reiner turned King's cautionary tale of fame and idolatry into a mainstream masterpiece of escalating suspense, translating King's own experience with obsessive fans into a frightening tale of entrapment and psychotic behavior. Kathy Bates deservedly won an Academy Award for her performance as Annie Wilkes, an unbalanced devotee of romance novels written by Paul Sheldon (James Caan), whose books provide Annie with a much-needed escape from her pathetic life and her secret, violent past. After Annie rescues the injured Sheldon from a car accident, she seizes the opportunity to nurse her favorite writer back to health, but her tender loving care soon turns to terrorism as she demands that Sheldon write his latest novel according to her wish-fulfillment fantasies. From this point forward,Miserypercolates to a boil as equal parts mystery, thriller, and cleverly dark comedy, with the helpless author pitched in deadly warfare against his number one fan. While Bates carefully modulates her role from doting kindness to sympathetic loneliness and finally to horrifying ferocity, Caan is equally superb as the celebrated author who must literally write for his life. It's essentially a two-actor film, but Richard Farnsworth and Lauren Bacall are excellent in supporting roles as they investigate the writer's mysterious disappearance. Frightening, funny, and totally irresistible,Miserywas such a hit that some of Bates's dialogue entered the popular lexicon (particularly her nagging reference to Caan as "Mister Man"), and its nail-biting thrills remain timelessly intense.--Jeff Shannon』

(The aftermath is very distrubing) 『I am going to make this as short as possible. This movie will catch you off guard. The movie starts off like just a normal view, kids playing, just a normal atmosphere. But as time goes on it gets more intense and by the end of this movie, it is just disturbing. This is based on a true story. I watched this movie about three months ago, and when I think of the girl next door or even run across it in my dvd collection, I pause and still get a strange uncomfortable feeling. This is one of those stories you will never forget that stays with you after the fact. Don't get me wrong this is a very good movie. But if you are overly sensitive to children, my advice is don't watch it.』
(That's 1 1/2 hours I'll Never Get Back) 『This movie was a complete waste of everyone's time. It has a promising beginning, but then tumbles and keeps on tumbling. The entire movie is solely focused on drawing out strong emotions with shock after shock after shock of the abuse a young girl goes through at the hands of her aunt and cousins. The entire movie is an exercise of pain. It exists solely to convey the pain this young girl goes through. The abuse continues right until the end, when the main character, a neighbor boy infatuated with the girl, turns into MacGyver to rescue her. He then kills the abuser so quickly and painlessly that it leaves the viewers with a complete sense of injustice. The ending happened so quickly that there was no reward for the viewer to see all the pain that happened. The entire experience leaves you feeling completely horrified and with no outlet for those emotions. There was no justice, no ramification, no nothing.』
(Vile, Uncompromising Reality) 『After watching this movie, the first thing I thought of was, "What movies have completely shocked me, surprised me, and left me wondering WTF just happened?" Here's the first ten that came to mind:
Remember the ending of Sleepaway Camp? Remember the sore ankle in Misery with Kathy Bates? Remember the Bobbit bathroom inspiration from I Spit on Your Grave? Remember bondage revenge in Descent with Rosario Dawson? Remember the basement scene from Sleepers with Kevin Bacon? Remember the bunny in Fatal Attraction? Remember mom just chilling in the original Psycho? Remember the special delivery from Se7en? Remember surprise in The Crying Game? Remember the chest buster in Alien?
Child's play. All of them. No movie has attacked my senses the way this movie has. No movie has left me with a sickening feeling, a disgusted realization of the depths to which people are capable of sinking. My jaw has never dropped so far, so fast, for so long. My eyes cannot unsee what has been seen. Absolutely unexpected Mike Tyson gut punch.
Based upon the heart-breaking true story of Sylvia and Jenny Likens, and adapted from a novel by Jack Ketchum of the same name, the story follows sisters Meg (Blyth Auffarth) and Susan (Madeline Taylor) who, after their parents' death, are forced to live with their aunt Ruth (Blanche Baker). After a brief period of normalcy, the relationship and situation turns into one of mental, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse that can buckle even the strongest person's knees. Along with a mob mentality reminiscent of the children from Lord of the Flies, Ruth enlists her brainwashed children and their friends to do most of the despicable acts, eventually culminating in suspenseful tragedy.
Blanche's portrayal is one of the most evil representations I have ever seen on film. I admire her for the courage it took to accept this role, and I'll never look at her quite the same way again. Auffarth is emotionally powerful as the defiant young soul who battles unimaginable torture to protect her younger sister, but eventually succumbs to overwhelming abuse.
Director Gregory Wilson paints a picture - not unlike the infamous chainsaw scene in Scarface - that conveys the message without actually showing much. The viewer knows what's happening to Meg, and that's more than enough to make anyone numb. Beyond exploitation and the trivial torture - yes, trivial - of most other movies, this is so close to heart-wrenching reality, and lacking in either satisfactory retribution or reward, that it sickens me to my core. Told through the burning lens of child abuse, this powerfully and sickeningly displays how the reality of warped parental influence and peer pressure can destroy childlike innocence. It's perhaps the most effective horror movie I've ever seen; and considering some of the sick stuff I've seen and reviewed and laughed at (i.e. Funny Games, Hostel, Saw, etc.), that's saying a lot.
Recommended ONE time hesitantly, to open eyes and witness a nearly flawless execution.』
(The only film i have ever watched that disturbed me.) 『Most "brutal" films, I have literally laughed through. I have never, ever, seen a film that left me with a sense of filth, degradation. I felt absolutely ill just for having watched this. That being said, it was an excellent movie. I will never watch it again, as there is simply nothing positive in it. No joy to be had, no revelation, nothing to ponder. this is simply the exposition of how fundamentally sick the human mind can be, and in that sense it succeeds to horrifying success.
So, I'll rate it four stars. I struggle to find the correct term, because to a horror movie buff "grotesque, "cringe-inducing," "explicit," and "twisted" are all buzz words that make us jump for the buy button. This is not that movie. You won't laugh at the creativity of the blood spray like a Hostel or Saw, You won't pick apart the half-assed characters like in any standard slasher flick, and you won't get that giddy "jump scare" of more conventional horror offerings. You will experience an entirely unpleasurable gut sensation of filth and disgust. If you can handle that, view away.』 『In a quiet suburban town in the summer of 1958, two recently orphaned sisters are placed in the care of their mentally unstable Aunt Ruth (Emmy® winner Blanche Baker of HOLOCAUST). But Ruth s depraved sense of discipline will soon lead to unspeakable acts of abuse and torture that involve her young sons, the neighborhood children, and one 12-year-old boy whose life will be changed forever. William Atherton (DIE HARD), Catherine Mary Stewart (NIGHT OF THE COMET) and Grant Show (MELROSE PLACE) co-star in this devastating drama adapted from the controversial best seller by Jack Ketchum that Rue Morgue Magazine called one of the most disturbing reads in the history of horror literature.』 『Based on the novel by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum,The Girl Next Doordraws its nerve-wracking power from a real-life horror show--the torture of Sylvia Likens and her sister by Gertrude Baniszewski and her offspring in the mid-1960s (the case also serves as the basis for the filmAn American Crime). Here, the Likens character is a recently orphaned teen (Blythe Auffarth) taken in by Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker), a single mother who plies her adolescent sons and their friends with alcohol and lax supervision. Ruth takes an almost instant disliking to the bright young girl and her sister (who is afflicted with polio) and mounts a campaign of mental and physical abuse upon them; her sons quickly fall into step behind their mother, and a neighborhood friend (Daniel Manche) struggles with his own participation in the atrocities. As true crime thrillers go,The Girl Next Doorsucceeds on many fronts: Baker and Auffarth give impressive performances, and the violence, though harrowing, is never offered as exploitation. Director Gregory Wilson also keeps the pace brisk and breathtaking as the torture escalates; however, he is less capable in the expositional scenes, and the script by Daniel Farrands and Philip Nutman has a leaden ring at times (which undoes the efforts of the younger cast). Still, it's challenging fare for strong-hearted horror and suspense fans. The DVD includes two sets of commentary: one by Wilson, producer Andrew van den Houten, and cinematographer/co-producer William M. Miller, and another by Ketchum and the screenwriters, who pull no punches in expressing their displeasure over changes made to the film's conclusion (and their assessments are entirely correct). Interviews with the cast and crew and the original screenplay (in DVD-ROM format) round out the supplemental features.--Paul Gaita』

I'll save you the agony of delving into details about what makes this movie so terribly bad, but I'll give you the quick summary: it begins weak, the build to the climax is weak, and the climax is anti-climactic. The length of some of the scenes were really annoying as well. I am a huge supporter of underground and independent film-making, but I just can't support something so boring and annoying. (This Puppet's Pullin' Tha Strings) 『From out of the world of blaxploitation comes Black Devil Doll, an almost fun romp that could've been so much better. A Black Panther militant is being put to death for raping and murdering 15 white women. As he's being strapped to the chair, miles away a young woman entertains herself with a Ouija board. Suddenly, his soul comes shootin' out of the board and enters a wooden puppet sitting next to her! Sporting an afro, a new skin color, and an engorged wooden "member" Black Devil Doll shocks the girl, calms her and beds her in record time-particularly for a puppet. But she's not enough and BDD convinces her to bring him more nubile ivory lasses. He then reverts to his M.O. sending these *ahem* ladies to their deaths. Rue Morgue magazine reported that the budget for this movie was about $5000. And it's apparent most of that money went into building the puppet. (Several were made.) In fact, the puppet is clearly the best thing about this flick. It's obvious great care went into the design as filmmakers succeeded in giving him a genuine personality complete with facial expression and a cool voice. (His reaction to an all girl carwash sequence is hilarious!) But that accomplishment is undermined by dreadful acting by the women in the movie, a lazy script, and questionable picture quality that renders the whole movie increasingly tedious to watch. Nudity is ample but the chicks aren't exactly Playboy quality. Gore lovers may be dissapointed as the best scenes don't appear till the close to the end. They include a throat slashing (seen in the promos) and a disemboweling. To top it all off, humor about human excrement is included which takes out whatever fun was left. A nice try but blaxploitation lovers will hollar "wannabe."』 『Five beautiful young women... one evil, murderous puppet. Heather thought that a Ouija board was nothing but an innocent child's game. (The Mummy is fun for all) 『Love "The Mummy",a great ride. Endless fun movie. So much fun,I had to get "The Return Of The Mummy". So you see the endless fun keeps going on&I hope the ride never ends.』
(Great service) 『The product was delivered earlier than I expected Great service And what I had ordered』
(Good film) 『This is still the best of the 3 mummy movies. I thought the film looked great in Blu-Ray. Very crisp and detailed. I always liked the chemistry between Rachel Weisz (one of my favorite actresses) and Brendan Fraser. The special effects throughout the film are very good. Sometimes the acting and script is a little too cheesy, and the John Hannah character can be very annoying (he plays Rachel Weisz' brother in the film), but the filmmakers were obviously going for the Indiana Jones "matinee" feel so it's forgivable. Not a great film but fun. I believe Rachel Weisz carries this film, however, and it wouldn't have worked without her.』 『Deep in the Egyptian desert, a handful of people searching for a long-lost treasure have just unearthed a 3,000 year old legacy of terror. Combining the thrills of a rousing adventure with the suspense of the legendary 1932 horror classic, The Mummy is a true nonstop action epic, filled with dazzling visual effects, top-notch talent and superb storytelling.』 『If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version ofThe Mummyis spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.
The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want good old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun,The Mummyranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999. --Jenny Brown』

... Oh.
Okay, but what's with Charlize Theron, the Devil doesn't chat her up? The Devil doesn't ask her to stand on a mirror? The Devil doesn't order out and ask her to play hide the salami? What kind of a loser of a Devil is this?
What? There's nothing in Aristotle's theory of dramatics that says Charlize Theron has to get hit on by the Devil?
... Oh, okay.
But, but -- but what about Al Pacino, what's his part in this story? Oh, *he's* the devil! What, because he was in The Godfather? Because he's Italian? (Prejudice! Prejudice!) And I suppose Charlize Theron never dated Italians, is that it?!
What's this fellow "Keanu" supposed to be anyway, Hawaiian? What was he Actor of the Year in Oahu? Send him back to his little grass shack. I bet he never met Don Ho. Did he ever say Hi-ho to Don Ho? Do they let Italians into Hawaii? What's the Devil's position on that? And why wasn't Charlize Theron wearing a hula skirt in this flicker? I'm not clear.
Anyway, the Devil's not such a bad guy. He was a pretty popular dude up to the 14th century. That's when he made a big mistake and hired a really awful publicist -- Gina Bellapartes. A dead ringer for Charlize Theron. Italian, a great body, but she couldn't type a lick. Which, the licking part, the Devil got to later on.
That woman sent Beelezebub's career into a tailspin. Hey! Maybe that's why they got Al Pacion to play the Devil! *His* career is in a tailspin, no? -- He's never been to Hawaii. -- George Reeves is still dead. -- And God is in his heaven.
By gosh, by golly, it all makes sense now!

(MUST SEE!!!!) 『One of my favorite films!!! Al Pacino at his best!!! If you're a fan of Al, you are definitely going to like him in this flick.
This movie is basically about the struggle between good and evil played out in the legal world amongst attorneys. Who wins.... Watch it to find out!!!:)
GREAT MOVIE!!!!』
(One of my fav...) 『I always found this movie to be one of the best by Al and Keanu...It epitomises the never ending battle between good and evil and the Devil's never ending quest to fulfil the desires of this flesh ;)』
(A superb performance by Keanu Reeves; an interesting flick) 『Even though I disagree with the "moral of the story" contained in this film, this is an interesting legal thriller that keeps the viewer's interest despite a few tedious moments here and there. Keanu Reeves plays the role of a red-hot up-and-coming defense attorney living in Florida, who is recruited by a huge New York law firm. Reeves has never lost a case, and his new firm's clients have a propensity for getting into criminal trouble. Al Pacino plays the managing partner of the law firm who recruits Reeves into the firm. You guessed it: the firm is not what it seems.
This is a supernatural thriller despite a superficial plot that is reminiscent of Grisham's "The Firm." There are enough surprises to keep the viewer guessing, and this is a snappy, stylish flick. Reeves is superb, and Pacino turns in his customary excellent performance.
I said that I disagree with the film's moral message, and I do. An attorney has a duty to do his or her best, and defense attorneys cannot always defend innocent clients. In fact, criminal defense attorneys rarely defend innocent, let alone blameless, clients. What are they supposed to do, lose on purpose? Are guilty clients to be judged in advance by the bar and be denied counsel? Of course not. I won't give anything away, but if you see the film you will see where I am going with this.
An engaging flick that is worth seeing. RJB.』
(The chuckle/grin on Pachinos face...) 『...as the young lady goes exploring under the restaraunt table is worth the price of the disc alone...』 『Hotshot attorney accepts tempting offer from an elite New York law firm only to find himself fighting for his soul. Genre:Suspense Rating:R Release Date:7-SEP-2004 Media Type:DVD』 『Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear--what's an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it inThe Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it inAngel Heart(as Louis Cyphre--get it?). InThe Devil's AdvocateAl Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham'sThe Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction, gleefully showing off his--and the Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford (Against All Odds,Dolores Claiborne), who provides alternate-track commentary for the movie itself, plus a dozen deleted scenes. Also note: due to a settlement with artist Frederick Hart over the movie's use of a sculpture resembling hisEx Nihiloin Washington's National Cathedral, future releases of the film will be altered.--Jim Emerson』

(An ok Scooby-Doo Set.) 『This is how a failed attempt to obtaining rights can go. This "The Best of 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies'" DVD set was released because Warner Bros. could not get the rights to use the images of the following characters: The Addams Family, Sonny&Cher, Josie and the Pussycats, Phyllis Diller, Sandy Duncan, Davy Jones, Jerry Reed, the cast of Jeannie (the animated sitcom),&Tim Conway. All together the complete 2 seasons of "The New Scooby-Doo Movies" would have a total of 24 episodes all running an hour long each.
Even a new opening was created to uphold the rights by removing the following characters from the opening: The Addams Family, Batman&Robin, The Globetrotters, The Three Stooges, and Laurel&Hardy. The interesting thing is the last 4 mentioned (Batman&Robin, The Globetrotters, The Three Stooges, and Laurel&Hardy) were in this DVD set.
All in all this is an okay DVD set with great mysteries containing 15 episodes of the characters that were still able to be used (Don Knotts, The Three Stooges, Batman&Robin, Laurel&Hardy, The Globetrotters, Dic Van Dyke, Cass Elliot and Don Adams.) Some of the guest stars appear in more then one episode but still fun to watch.
It is more then likely that this will be the only DVD released of the series so if you are a Scoob-Doo collector this is something you want to include in your collection.』 『Kids who fell in love with the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Black Cat Disappoints) 『THE BLACK CAT(1934)---(directed by Edgar G. Ulmer)---Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Jacqueline Wells(aka, Julie Bishop), Lucille Lind, Henry Armetta, Harry Cording. This film features the first on-screen pairing of Karloff and Lugosi. Despite its reputation as a landmark horror film, I found it to be a major disappointment. The plot is ridiculous and incoherent, the acting is stiffer than a starched shirt, and the climax is "anti-"!!! A freshly married couple(Manners and Wells) are on a train heading for some unpronounceable destination in Hungary. Due to a "booking mistake", they find themselves sharing their compartment with Lugosi, who plays an "eminent" psychiatrist. By the damnedest coincidence, they are all headed for the same place---the newlyweds to honeymoon---the shrink to "visit an old friend"(played by Karloff). When they arrive at their destination, it's raining "cats and dogs", so they share a horse-drawn "taxi". The "taxi" flips over in the storm killing the driver and leaving the three travelers stranded in the deluge. By another coincidence, the home of Lugosi's friend is nearby so they all head for shelter there. They are welcomed by Karloff(who happens to be an "eminent" architect) and then things really get bizarre. We learn that Lugosi and Karloff had served together in WWI and that Karloff had betrayed his unit to the enemy so that he could get Lugosi's wife and daughter for himself; Lugosi escaped a massacre but was thrown into prison where he has languished for the past 15 years. In the interim, Karloff has built an extravagant house on the site of the gun emplacements where the betrayal took place!!! We also discover that Lugosi's wife died two years earlier but Karloff(who happens to be a Satan worshiper) has kept her corpse perfectly preserved and is now married to Lugosi's daughter! What a surprise when we learn that Lugosi has not come to pay a "social call" but to extract revenge on Karloff for "cutting up" the way he has. Karloff plans to conduct a Satanic ritual that will transfer the "life"(I think) of the newlywed bride to his wife(Lugosi's daughter) in order to "keep her young". Lugosi and the groom eventually manage to foil Karloff's plans, the newlyweds escape, and Lugosi blows himself and Karloff up(it seems that not only did Karloff build his house over the old gun emplacements, but also over an underground stash of dynamite!!!!!!). If this synopsis has you confused, try watching the movie---I kept it simple!!! This is truly an awful film, given the stars and the reputation it has garnered over the years. The best things about the movie are the "over the top" Art-Deco sets. As a general rule, I'm a fan of Edward G. Ulmer---his films are always a little "out there", but he has made some movies that I really like, e.g., STRANGE ILLUSION; DETOUR(a terrific little film noir); and RUTHLESS. However, he went totally "off the reservation" with this turkey---it is so full of plot inconsistencies, non-sequiturs, and truly awful acting that I regret buying it. By the way, the film takes its title from the fact that Lugosi suffers from a pathological fear of---you guessed it---black cats!』
(a moden poe) 『several of these movies are just modern adaptations of edgar allen poe stories and my opinion is Vincent price versions were beter and true o the story lines.video quality and sound is good but not as good as the newer color stuff.』
(The Bela Lugosi Collection Delivers!) 『This is a good quality print of my favorite Universal Studios horror classics. The Black Cat has some of the most amazing art direction including a digital clock in one of the scenes. Its a must have for any horror fan.』
(Universal....Please respect your creations!) 『And you thought Henry Frankenstein had a quality control problem when he put Fritz in charge of acquiring a brain for his creation. I bought the Bela Lugosi Collection and the Frankenstein Legacy Collection and they both have flawed discs! I was going to return them until I learned how pervasive these problems are. I've read horror stories of buyers who had to return up to 5 copies before receiving one that worked properly! Universal should haul their remaining inventory up to a spooky old windmill, light a torch and....well, you know.』
(5 Universal classics, 1 DVD. What are you waiting for?) 『Really, that tagline is all you need to know, but i suppose if you're going to be a baby about it, I'll go ahead and tell you about this set. It's a diverse collection of 5 genre-spanning films featuring horror legends Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Three of the films claim to be based upon the works of Edgar Allen Poe. This is largely nonsense, but the films themselves are quite good and run about an hour apiece. 5+ hours of classic horror icons in awesome packaging for the price of a single DVD. You'd be a damn fool not to buy this unless you already own these films.
"Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the closest to a true Poe adaptation here and came but a year after Lugosi's legendary performance in Dracula. The film tells the story of a mad scientist -played by you-know-who- working at a sideshow who intends to create a human-ape hybrid race by injecting women with his captive ape's blood. Lugosi is a smooth operator if more then a little creepy trying to move in on his female of choice, but is probably a crummy scientist considering the rest of the women he attempted his experiment on all died. Definition of insanity and all that, I suppose. Apparently a whole lot of violence was cut out of this film which is a real shame because the original material has not been restored and it really could have made this one close to perfect. 4 stars
"The Black Cat" is a great film. A terrible excuse to invoke the works of Poe, but still very enjoyable. The title creature appears all of twice (maybe thrice) and has no effect on the story except for invoking comically exaggerated displays of fear from Lugosi. This was the first of several Karloff vs Lugosi films and aong the best that I've seen of the lot. Lugosi plays a war survivor whose comrades were wiped out due to a betrayal by his superior officer (Karloff). Two innocent travelers wind up being thrust in the middle of the vendetta and the way it plays out is really extraordinary. This is the most despicable Karloff role I've ever seen and it was nice to see Lugosi play the hero. 4 1/2 stars
While "The Raven" has little to do with the immortal poem everybody knows by heart, it is one of the best film tributes to Edgar Allen Poe that I've come across. And coming from a Vincent Price fanatic, that is saying a lot. Lugosi plays a surgeon obsessed with the works of the macabre poet who is prodded into saving the life of a beautiful young lady, who he easily falls for. But the lady is spoken for. Karloff plays an escaped murder who implores the doctor to change his face, and he does...to resemble half-disfigured Batman villain Two Face. He then orders the crook to help him do that which he has already done: take a life. The opposition are treated to a gallery of Poe-inspired torture devices (yes, there is both a pit and a pendulum) and Karloff's character has to decide between redemption and damnation. There is a very memorable performance where Lugosi gives some fantastic insight into the psychology of Poe's works and of course recites some of the title poem as well, which is a treat. 5 stars
"The Invisible Ray" is a science fiction film with a touch (so to speak) of horror to it where Lugosi again got to play the hero. It's the longest film in the set at about 80 minutes and it doesn't waste it. Karloff gets to give the mad scientist role a go this time and does a predictably great job. The sci-fi aspect really makes this one stand out and the idea of looking at rays of light as possible doorways to the past was well ahead of it's time. After all, the light we see from stars has been traveling for million of years or more. Think about if we could somehow see images of the things that a ray of light has been privy to in it's voyage. Anyways, Karloff uses this notion in a fairly backwards way to glimpse an intergalactic asteroid striking Earth in the distant past. Hunting the asteroid down -having seen where it hit- with a group including a respectful professional rival played by Lugosi, he discovers that the meteor contained a new element with amazing properties. Karloff's character vanishes and is presumed dead, reappearing years later and finding that his fiance has married another and his rival has used his discovery's properties to heal the sick and become famous. Can somebody say "insane radiation-fueled vengeance spree"? Great flick. 4 1/2 stars
"Black Friday" is the weakest of the set and features both Karloff and Lugosi, but neither in starring roles. This one combines the gangster film genre with science fiction for an intriguing mix. As fate has it, a mild-mannered professor is run down during a gang shootout that leaves a mob boss dead at the hands of his own crew. Karloff plays a doctor who uses the slain mobster's brain to somehow save the prof's life. If anybody should know that messing around with criminal brains is a bad idea, it's Boris Karloff. Anyways, the result is a split personality, a hunt for the mobster's hidden fortune, and some payback along the way. Lugosi's role as a gangster is too small for this to be included in a boxed set of his films, but the movie itself is worth watching for old school sci-fi fans. Stanley Ridges easily acts circles around his legendary co-stars and really puts on the best performance in this set playing two very different characters in the same body. But the whole thing is played a bit farfetched and the story lags at times. 3 stars
Bela Lugosi is one of the most unique and evocative screen presences in the history of cinema. How many time have you personally mimicked his unforgettable Hungarian accent? When you think of the perfect onscreen vampire, whose is the very first face you picture? Karloff may have gotten all of the love, but it's Lugosi who remains my favorite actor of the 30's and 40's. A true one-of-a-kind who left a stamp on the horror genre that has only become more pronounced with time. He's bee the subject of songs, depicted and referenced in books and movies, and despite his career hardships, has risen from the grave to achieve true immortality as a cinema icon like no other. The films on this disc may not be his most famous works, but they are necessary viewing. At this price, this set is a no-brainer. Enjoy.』 『Includes: murders in the rue morgue black cat raven invisible ray black friday Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 09/06/2005 Rating: Nr』
