This movie is not that great and if it were not for the TV series, it would probably fall off the face of the planet. Do yourself a favor and just try to rent it from somewhere. 』
(Be afraid be very afraid.) 『Very teen movie. Accurate valley girls, real air heads. Simple plot. Luke Perry's 4th movie before SNL. Hilary Swank's frist movie before they both did 90210. Don't expect much from this 1992 movie and you'll find it's a laugh riot. It's how the whole Buffyverse got started.』
(In The Words of Joss Whedon: "It was funny when I wrote it.") 『As fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the television series know, this movie from 1992 does not function as a prequel to the series. Creator Joss Whedon did write the script, but all the freshness and creativity was sucked out by the director, lines were read badly or completely misread, and the entire production team just didn't get what Whedon was trying to say. After this introduction, comparisons between the movie and the series will cease, but I just thought I should warn anyone who might be new to Joss Whedon's work that this movie is nothing like Joss's vision of Buffy. That can all be found in the TV series and, currently, the comics. But as for this movie...
One would think that this could be an adorable, cheesy movie. One would think the bittersweetness of a bad director messing up Joss Whedon's vision would fade once the film started. One would think that the movie might be so cheesy that it, like all of the corniest films, would be entertaining because of the overt cheesiness. But... no. The scenes that are supposed to be hilarious--the extra long death of Paul Reubens's character--was so awfully unfunny that I seriously debated turning off the movie, even though there was only ten minutes left. The scenes that are supposed to be dramatic--Buffy's "big win" at the end, as well as the major death scene--fell entirely flat, due to out of place dramatic pauses, bad readings of good lines, and the--sorry, all--bad acting of Kristy Swanson.
While the movie is devoid of quirk or real understanding of the feminist message Whedon wove into the script, it's not all bad. As a reviewer said, it did indeed pave the way for things to come, because without the movie, there would never have been the show. Also, Luke Perry gave a nice performance as Pike, and Hilary Swank's talent was able to shine through the badness of this movie, despite how small her role was. But aside from those actors, some gems in the script, and a hilariously random cameo from then no body Ben Affleck, this movie isn't worth seeing, no matter how much you love the REAL "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
3/10』
(A little Cheesy, but still a fun movie) 『If you're a fan of the tv show, you might be really disappointed in this one if you're looking for more of the same thing. The tone, pacing, and overall feel are very different.
The original movie is much more of a comedy and a bit of a silly one at that. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's much more for a fan of fun 80s movies thatn for the BTVS series. Some of the lines are very cheesy and haven't aged well, but the fun of the movie is still there. It's entertaining and can keep you in good spirits for nearly 2 hours.
Fun for fans of light comedy, not for the horror fanatic or diehard BTVS fan.』
(Cheesy, comedic fun.) 『This is a great movie for the lighthearted, cheesy, comedic angle. I prefer this type of thing to the TV series, which takes itself WAY to seriously. This movie is a great lighthearted laugh or two.』 『Blonde, bouncy Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is your typical high school cheerleader-- her goal is to "marry Christian Slater and die" and nothing gets in her way when it's time to shop. But all that changes when a strange man (Donald Sutherland) informs her she's been chosen by fate to kill vampires. With the help of a romantic rebel (Luke Perry), Buffy is soon spending school nights protecting L.A. from Lothos, the Vampire King (Rutger Hauer), his sidekick. Lefty (Paul Ruebens) and their determined gang of bloodsuckers. It's everything you'd expect from a teen queen in the Valley.』 『Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 tongue-in-cheek vampire comedy is sugarcoated horror, an unusual mix of the cute and scary, with a splash of postmodern pop nonsense to give culture critics something to think about. Kristy Swanson plays a Valley Girl who learns she belongs to a line of ancient vampire killers. After training under the watchful eye of a mentor (Donald Sutherland), she becomes a spandex-wearing, kung-fu kicking, stake-stabbing babe and the mortal enemy of a narcissistic master vampire (Rutger Hauer). The accent is all on cheery attitude, though the action can be as authentically unnerving as any other halfway decent monster movie. Paul Reubens, formerly Pee-wee Herman, has a small role as Hauer's fanged familiar.--Tom Keogh』

GEORGE ROMERO is a genius .』
(Dawn Of the Dead.) 『Well, For some Gore counts as Horror, Especially Canablism Cheap Gore and Zombies to round off this so-called classic, nothing impressive, except body parts falling. Not what I would describe horror but much more Shock value and what generally is wrong with people.』
(Anachronistic and doesn't hold up well when compared to slick new zombie / infected movies.) 『Had to see what the hubbub was about with Romero's original "classics." So, I got suckered into seeing this steaming pile. I'm giving it two stars pretty much on Romero's name alone, as an innovator in the zombie genre. NOT because it's high cinema, which I really DON'T think it is.
To be frank, the movie seems anachronistic and rather tame by today's standards. Sure it was made in the 70's and for the time it was considered to be pushing the envelope. Today, well, it just doesn't hold up against modern zombie movies.
I mean, the zombies are just people in blue makeup. Terrifying, I know! (Not so much...) They shamble... Slowly. Like you could get away from them with a brisk walk! (Horrifying!) There was no tension. There was no foreboding terror. Not even a little good-natured shiver going down my spine. Really it was a few hours of boredom. I think at one point I even checked how much longer the movie had left to run (about 1/2 an hour), that how bored I was. I was waiting all movie for some serious zombie munching and was disappointed at its overall absence outside of the last 1/2 hour (and even that was fairly tame and movie-esque, in my opinion; though perhaps forgivable given the era of cinema it was released in).
I kept wanting the people to stop being dumb arses and go on a zombie killing spree. I mean, the zombies are slow. They have NO evasion skills. They have no "strategery" skills (yes, I know, I mean strategy, geez!). The humans have access to a gun store and about all the ammo they can possibly use. The reason they couldn't simply walk around methodically (and briskly!) decapitating zombies or blasting them in the skull with shot guns was WHAT now? I mean, if your first thought is survival isn't the object to eliminate the walking dead so they don't sneak up on you while you're using the can? But no, they just let the zombies go about their business for the first third of the movie.
This movie didn't frighten me. It didn't disturb me (unlike 28 Days Later, which was rather disturbing insofar as the "infected" kept vomiting blood and stuff all over the place). There was maybe one scene of a guy getting ripped apart for being a dumb arse and sticking his arm into a blood pressure monitoring machine's arm strap in the middle of an ongoing zombie invasion. Frankly he deserved what he got and I had zero sympathy for him. That and he was part of a roving band of marauders, so I had double the zero sympathy for him (what's two times zero?)...
Yeah, it may have been considered pioneering at the time, but today it's just a piece of tame, anachronistic tripe. If you want something a considerably less tame try the Remake or the Resident Evil Trilogy or Slither or Planet Terror.
Sure, the classics are "classic." They're the genre's "origins." They're good for film school classes and for seeing "how far we've come." But do the stand the test of time? Honestly, I've seen better and scarier and less overtly boring.』
(I must not be sophisticated enough to appreciate this movie) 『Judging from the huge pileup of 5-star reviews, I must not have what it takes to appreciate this film.
I have no problem whatsoever with zombie movies. I've watched and enjoyed many of them. Dawn of the Dead is a horrible movie. One of the worst I have ever seen.
The dialog is ludicrous. The actors are utterly unconvincing. The plot is absurd. The special effects are laughable (even for its time).
The makeup was the high spot and it wasn't all that great.
There were way too many shots of the dead wandering around. Cut them out, and this movie would be better (and 30 merciful minutes shorter).
I am an extraordinarily patient movie consumer, but sitting through this was excruciating. There isn't a friend, enemy, or total stranger to whom I would recommend this film. 』
(Not worth all the hype) 『I had never seen this movie until now, but for years had heard that it was great. I don't think I've ever seen a review less than 3 stars for this movie, and Roger Ebert, who is usually pretty rough on horror films, gave it a lot of praise. Don't forget, he's the guy who along with his co-host the late Gene Siskel, devoted an hour long TV special to talking about how slasher films were undermining the moral character of America and were examples of cinema at it's worst.
Now that I've seen Dawn of the Dead I'm somewhat surprised. It really is a terrible movie. It's not scary, funny, disturbing or entertaining in any way. It's just a big bore. It has none of the elements that fans of horror films usually seem to go for: no good looking women, not much gore, not much comic relief, and not even any campy bad acting. The acting is bad, but not in an amusing or entertaining way. There are no known actors in this, and they have no acting talent at all. They sound like they are just reading lines - no expression in their voices and body language is way off. There's not even any nudity.
The gore and special effects are laughable. The zombies are not even very gruesome-looking (some of the non-zombies are actually uglier) and the blood (what little there is of it) just looks like bright red paint. This is just a total disaster in ever conceivable way. It is not worth anyone's time to watch it. I don't know how anyone who was involved in making this film ever had a career after this. What I really don't get is why so many people like this movie so much. This has had multiple DVD releases while so many other great horror movies have never even been released on VHS.
I'm just glad that I got this at my local library instead of buying or even renting it. If I'd laid out any money at all to see this, I'd feel cheated. It has to be one of the most overrated movies ever, even more than Titanic, The Exorcist, The French Connection, and Risky Business. I didn't like any of those movies very much, but this one makes them look like masterpieces. It really is that awful. Most of the slasher films Siskel and Ebert condemned, even the ones I thought weren't so great myself, are light years more entertaining than this.』 『Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 09/07/2004』 『Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder'sDawn of the Deaddefies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify thisDawnas an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with28 Days Later, its de facto British counterpart.--Jeff Shannon』

(GET IT NOW IT'S A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) 『I LOVE this season. I can't decide whether I like season 2 or 3 more. I love the growth of Cordy's character through the seasons. Some have a hard time seeing how Cordy can change, but people don't usually stay the same people they were in High School and as you could see from the Cordy/Xander relationship (even though she didn't show it to Xander, if you actually watch you can see she really did love him and she's had a good heart, it was just guarded) and Cordy actually helping Buffy in seasons 1-3 of Buffy's series Cordy did actually have a heart. It was just hidden under her trying to fit in, in high school until that's how you've become (in high school you don't really know how you are so you usually go with what feels comfortable or for a lot of people whatever makes you cool and popular, which was what Cordy had done). In season 1 when she was given the visions and that demon attacked her with all the pain of everyone in the world it started to change her (think, if you could feel the pain of EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE PLANET for God knows how long before Angel came and saved you from it, wouldn't you want to help them if you could)? Whenever Cordy got a vision she felt the pain, fear, and everything else that person was feeling and that would change anyone and it changed Cordy. Slowly, but surely. If you were to actually sit back and think about it and how you'd be in that same situation you might actually see how someone could care about helping others. Wes saw it in her because they became really close (like brother and sister) and Angel was so wrapped up in his own crap with Darla that he forgot about his friends and he didn't even notice that Cordy was changing. When Wes brought it to his attention Angel actually started to look at Cordy and realize it himself and if you notice in certain little gestures you could tell in season 3 he was going to fall for her.
I'm honestly a Spike/Buffy, Angel/Cordy fan so I can't understand why people are so up in arms about the Angel/Cordy ship, but what Buffy and Angel had was more of a high school first love thing and what Cordy and Angel had was deeper. It was a friendship that grew into love and I honestly don't think any adult that went back and watched it would see Buffy and Angel as anything more then that. If you like Buffy and Angel together, you might just want to watch the Twilight series. Bella and Edward are basically Buffy and Angel (you can tell the author got the idea from the Buffy series) except Buffy fights evil. The fans of Buffy and Angel that aren't so hung up on Angel/Buffy will LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE season 3. It's an amazing season.』
(angel season 3) 『the dvds were scratched and could not be played in the dvd i had to use a cleaner to get them to work and they would only work in my laptop.』
(could have been better) 『unfortunately this is the most lackluster angel season in the series. the whole connor-holtz story is really boring and repetitive. Holtz didn't really feel like a cool vampire hunter like Van helsing or blade. he doesn't have that kind of flair about him like lindsey or spike. that story arc doesn't really start to redeem it's self until the end of season 4! in spite of this there are a few gems among the rocks:
. the story between darla and angel comes full circle. the ultimate decision she makes is moving.
. it's interesting to see how angel handles the results of that decision. we get to see a new side of him
. Wesley' change at the end leads him to interesting and dark places. it makes him stronger and more interesting.
every series has it's worst season and best season. this is the worst one and 5 is the best. if you want to finish the series you'll need the main story arcs in this one to understand some of the following seasons arcs. while it's not torture you may want fast forward the boring parts.』
(Another great season) 『After almost five years I'm still sad the show ended. Why!? Because of a season like 3. Sure, David was not getting any younger, but two more season would have been great... at least we have After the Fall. In this season Angel had to deal with a lot of things: death of a beloved, fatherhood, betrayal, losses and love. He had to feel more human emotions than in any other season in his or in Buffy's time. The way it as written made us know much more of the man behind the brooding guy, we could relate to every one of these emotions and feel sorry for the characters in the season. It felt real, it was real. In the end, we had a human vampire, not only a vampire with a soul... or a show. He had to grow up. Besides, another character in the show suffered a 360º change. What to say!? Wonderfully cast and written, it is one of the two ever shows in TV... of course, the other being Buffy.』 『Even as Angel mourns the death of Buffy, Darla makes her way to L.A. with a mysterious new life growing within her. Now thrust into a role he never imagined, Angel needs the assistance of the Angel Investigations team more than ever. But while Cordelia, Gunn and Fred rally round the new dad, an ancient and deadly prophecy convinces Wesley to commit the ultimate betrayal.』 『In the third season ofAngel, the titular vampire with a soul was forced to stand alone thanks to the (temporary) death of his beloved Buffy and her show's move to a new network, with no crossover between the two allowed. He returns from seeking peace in a demon-haunted monastery to find the L.A. Angel Investigations team fighting supernatural crime in his absence. Fred is still haunted by the nightmare dimension from which they rescued her; Cordelia's visions get ever more painful and debilitating. The schemes of the evil law firm Wolfram and Hart become every more imaginative and dragon lady Lilah Morgan becomes even more of an enemy when lusting after Angel. Unbelievably, Darla, Angel's vampire sire and lover, turns up, pregnant with his child and is tortured by inexplicable motherly feelings as well as a raging thirst for human blood.
For a few episodes things go pretty well--but Angel's enemies, both those he has made in his quest for redemption and those he made when he was unadulterated evil, are still out there. Stephanie Romanov comes into her silky own in this series, making Lilah Morgan all the more seductively evil because she is clear about the choices she has made; the satanic law firm of Wolfram and Hart are this show's most inspired creation. As the season moves to its close, Wesley (Alexis Denisof) has hard choices to make. The devastating climax is compulsive viewing, and this season also contains one of the most impressive single episodes of the entire show: in "Waiting in the Wings," writer, director and creator Joss Whedon comes up with a classic ghost story as Angel and his crew go to the ballet and find a performance that is literally timeless.--Roz Kaveney』

Teen Wolf had the feel of an 80's film and my family missed this film when it first came out. We picked up this double feature some years after its release and enjoyed M. J. Fox, but did not get that much of a bang out of it. The strangest thing about both films is that the subject of the werewolf is treated so casually, just like a case of a five-o-clock shadow that increases your popularity at school. These two movies should obviously not be taken too seriously and were basically kid films made for the consumption of popcorn and a few hours to kill. I was a little surprised that Mr. Fox accepted the role as he seemed to have a few things going for him back then.』
(Wine+Cookies+Teenwolf= Ok Time) 『Although a great movie I feel like some of the original music might have been left out. I could be wrong. I mean, like, the last time I have viewed this movie was in, Oh, I dunno, 1985.... There were moments in the movie where there was too much silence, that made it seem like there could have been a music track playing. But anyway. Despite that. The transfer was quite clear, but I wonder if this was the full screen version stretched out to fill a widescreen format. Hrm.』
(Howling Good Fun) 『
I must admit that this is a good movie, despite the horrible make-up that Micheal J. Fox wears when he transforms into the "wolf". Why is it that every movie (and TV Show) that has a werewolf in it, the "werewolf" looks more like Bigfoot than an actual wolf? Hellsing is the only movie that I could think of that doesn't turn the werewolf into a Bigfoot rip-off. But Teen Wolf is a good movie about this basketball star that becomes a werewolf, and his father is too. I never saw the sequel to Teen Wolf, and from what I hear that's a very good thing. This is a movie from my childhood and it's very good, despite that Bigfoot make-up.』
(Beware of fine print) 『When buying a product labeled "new" take care to read every single thing in the ad. If item has been opened to check for condition, that means the exterior could come all beat up and unfit to give as a gift. You will be stuck with it.』

Although his werewolf makeup makes him look more like Bigfoot than Lon Chaney, Jr., Fox manages to convey his peppy personality even under all that hair.Teen Wolf Too, however, is not even bearable. I used to watch her on late night TV and was happy that she made a film of her own. With the advent of commercial DVD's, it is now possible to own these films for personal use. I have seen the film several times and like to watch it often. The setting of New England, a past center of witchcraft, is perfect in an updated horror film. The pursuit of a Vegas career is a modern twist. As a fan of stippers, Elvira's stage act is a throwback to old burlesque. All in all, I am happy to own a film favorite.』

For generations to come. I love this movie and it is so funny and just great to own and watch over and over again.』
(How can you hate Elvira? You can't.. You really can't) 『This movie is simply the best horror-film parody ever made. And it's also just one darned enjoyable flick. I guess you could call it a guilty pleasure. True, it is pure cornball, but I have grown to love it, and I watch it regularly every year around Halloween, since (naturally) several channels on TV routinely feature it as part of that select batch of Halloween pictures that just scream for annual broadcasting.
Extremely well filmed (IMHO), I am always really amazed at how nice it is to see it again each year - it holds up well and looks fantastic even today, after 13 years.
From a physical perspective, Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) - with that showgirl figure and that over-the-top tight-fitting black costume - just grabs your attention with both, um, *hands*, from the get go, and never lets go. But there's much more to revel in here than just her physical assets: her acting, her ditzy charm and irreverent risqué sense of humor will just have you lapping it up. In short, you'll just love Elvira from top to bottom (unlike the townies in the story, many of whom decidedly did not take kindly to her sudden arrival in their up-tight little burg in Massachusetts).
This movie is just busting out all over with titillating, slightly off-color humor (or: off-colour humour for those of you on the other side of the Atlantic) from start to finish. There are many funny and memorable lines in this movie of the double-entendre variety; it's hard to keep abreast of them all. (I'd list a few of my racier favorites here, but in the interest of not offending the delicate sensibilities of anyone reading this who is NOT into that sort of humor, well, it might be best for you to just go watch the movie and compile your own list).
I can't say anything bad about this movie at all, except that sadly it does end, and you are left wanting more (of Elvira). LOTS more. Alas, c'est la vie.』 『When her great aunt dies famed horror hostess elvira heads for the uptight new england town to falwell to claim her inheritance of a haunted house a witchs cookbook and a punk rock poodle. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Donnie Darko dvdVery interesting storyc) 『Very interesting story concept. However, as with many movies of this nature, the scenes are dark and some of the detail cannot be made out. Also, the music in vital conversation scenes is so loud that the voices cannot be heard to understand what the actors are saying.』
(it's called a 'cult-classic' for a reason) 『9.4 THE FILM ITSELF 9.1 VISUALS 9.5 SOUND 10 PACKAGING 8.3 EXTRAS
I've seen Donnie Darko well over 25 times. It took me a long time to understand it. And to be honest, I didn't really understand it until I listened to the director's commentary. It helped alot. But without ruining anything, I'll simply say that the story follows a young man named Donnie Darko who learns about time travel and that if he doesn't fix what's wrong, the world will end in a little over 28 days. The film captures emotions beautifully, from heartache, to longing, to love to secrets to being mentally unstable to superhero powers. It's alot to take in for one sitting, but Donnie Darko has mastered the art of unique, dialogue driven story telling. This is a film with very little action and runs off of dialogue and characterization.
Is it a must see? I believe so. No other movie has the atmosphere and feel like Donnie Darko. Does it have someone in a demented bunny suit? Yeah. But does the movie get all fudged up and super crazy hectic? Nope. It holds itself together, and everyone should enjoy this film at least once.
VISUALS 9.1 I love the look of the film. It's always dark and kind of grainy, but it fits the look well. And the "time lines" that come out of characters look fantastic. And for as small of a budget as this film has, it looks amazing. Nothing you'll write home about probably, but I found little to be unhappy with.
SOUND 9.5 I should've probably given this a 10. Great song selections, great eerie calming background music... it's all just great and really adds another leayer of greatness to a stunningly original sci-fi movie.
PACKAGING 10 I love the cover, I love the main menu, I love how the selections change. It's simple, but I love it all.
EXTRAS 8.3 This blu-ray comes with a bonus disc that is found in the DVD version of the "Collector's Edition / Director's Cut" that came out a few years ago. And the bonus disc is literally the exact same DVD, and it is just a DVD. But that's not a problem for me.
Three commentaries are here and all are really impressive. The best being Richard Kelly (writer / director) spending time with Kevin Smith (of Dogma / Mallrats fame) as they discuss alot of aspects of the film. The other two are Kelly and Gyllenhaal and the last is most of the cast with Kelly. All offer some great insight into a small, cult-like film that has a huge following.
"The Cult of Donnie Darko" and "#1 Fan: A Darkomentary" are kind of the same and capture the psychotic love affair some people have with the film. Interesting bonus feature, but nothing that makes you appreciate it. And the documentary by the #1 fan is almost really disturbingly creepy in seeing how much that guy loves the film.
"Storyboard to Screen" is exactly what it sounds like and the theatrical trailer is here, but it's for the Director's Cut of the film.
And it should be noted that the Kelly and Smith commentary is on the Director's Cut, which is 21 minutes longer than the theatrical, original release, and the other two commentaries are on the regular cut. Nothing majorly different in the versions, Director's Cut just tries to make more sense for people like me who couldn't understand what was happening all the time.
IN CLOSING Donnie Darko instantly became a cult phenomenon and when I first watched it I was amazed and yet highly confused. After numerous viewings little has changed, but I still love this film a whole lot. Snd the blu-ray version looks sharp, has great music and all the bonus features from the DVD version. So if you own the DVD, no reason to double-dip. If you're on the fence but really like owning blu-rays, then I would suggest the blu-ray version.
BLURAY SCORE 9.6/10 "INCREDIBLE"』
(Fascinating and Entertaining) 『I first saw this movie on Bravo back when they weren't running reality shows all night long, and after seeing it a few times just kept wanting to watch it even more. Getting the DVD has revealed alot...and also opened up a whole other world if you will. I'm not one to understand what Universe the film is in at any given moment, or try to decipher how time travel works. I can only fathom that the movie is smart, bratty, and for the most part brutally honest about high school life (or whatever Middlesex is), Jr. High etc...and the variety of students you would encounter.
Donnie is the independent one, who is smart enough to challange the norm, and stand up for what he believes...I think I understand why intelligent people are so angry and sometimes misunderstood, they see the world for what it is, they understand what is really going on around them, and they are really angry about it. Those of us who aren't intelligent to understand how we are being screwed, are just left in the dark, and it's up to Donnie Darko to save us all.
Very good film holds your attention, with some comedic moments, from whimsical to some off color comments that like I said are kids being kids, not always polite, and the music..the music makes this film all the more enjoyable. Good to hear some more alternative sounds, even the music choices are smart and are a major factor in the atmosphere of the movie. An amazing film to watch , even if you are not able to understand it like me, the whole concept...at least makes you want to understand it little by little, even if you are distracted by great characters in interesting situations throughout this time.』
(Cult favorite is a hit-and-miss affair) 『DONNIE DARKO
(USA - 2001)
Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Panavision) Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Digital
A lonely high school student (Jake Gyllenhaal) is beset by visions which portend either a mental breakdown or the End of the World...
Richard Kelly's debut film aims for cult status at every level but fails to fly off the screen. Though a fine actor, Gyllenhaal is basically miscast, and Kelly's style is too laidback to make much of an impact. Cult favorite James Duval (a regular in Gregg Araki's outrageous movies) makes a cameo appearance as the object of Gyllenhaal's strange 'visions'. Fine use of the wide Panavision frame.
A re-edited director's cut was subsequently released on home video. 』
(Cult Classic) 『Donnie Darko is one of those movies that is impossible to classify. It is not for everyone that is for sure. But if you are a fan of film you will enjoy it. My advice if you have not seen the film is to see it. My review can not do it justice and it is hard to describle. It bears repeat viewing and will really cause you to think unlike so many generic cookie cutter movies out now.』 『In the tradition of Urban Legends and Final Destination, Donnie Darko is an edgy, psychological thriller about a suburban teen coming face-to-face wit his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal leads a star-filled cast (including Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Jena Malone, Patrick Swayze and Mary McDonnell) as a delusional high-school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past - and deadly predictions for the future. This "excitingly original" (Entertainment Weekly) nail-biter will keep you on the edge of your seat until the mind-bending climax.』 『This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that devastates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly,Donnie Darkois a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride.--Tom Keogh』

Alas, while there is substantial improvement in the video via BD's high resolution, its a disappointment compared to many other BD releases. Most video images lack sharpness. Since old movies like Battle of Britain, 2001: Space Odyssey or Clockwork Orange, can compete with recent films like Troy, its clear the folks who mastered Predator did a poor job.
Audio does not make full use of imaging although its clearer and more bombastic than the DVD, and since 5.1 Dolby only came in the 1990s, that point can be excused.
However, since Predator is sold as a discount BD disk, if you don't own it on DVD, its well worth it, but if you do, think twice, the improvements are not that stark. However, the BD made if far clearer to me the pilots were still in the chopper after it was downed, the skinned corpses of the Hopper team appear more detailed and ghastly, there is more oomph in the assault on the rebel scene due to the improved sound, you can see the rounds in the mini-gun zip through the gun and its clear how its fed through the backpack ammo case, you can make out the MTV t-shirt throughout most of Jesse Ventura's scenes, you can make out where the commandos were hit by the predator, which was vague on the DVD. So overall, its an improvement, and worth 3 stars. 』
(Proper Blu-Ray upgrade, please ?) 『The movie itself is great. Won't bother you with all the details, because you're well aware of them, of course. I'm waiting for a proper blu-ray edition, one that takes advantage of the format. This one doesn't. The studio's blu-ray version insults my intelligence. 'Nuff said.』
(This is the real king of the jungle!) 『Even though I slightly prefer the sequel, the original is still creepy and entertaining. Here we are introduced to the "Predator," an alien hunter who has crash-landed in the jungles of Central America. Little is known about this strange species; only that it'll kick your @** if you get in his way. Add in Arnold Schwarzenegger and his team of soldiers and you've got a bitter conflict between human and alien. I got to say that this is one of the few movies in which Arnold gives a very good performance. You get to see him in some well-done action sequences. The supporting cast is good as well: who would have thought that Jesse Ventura could act? The action is solid; the blood and gore aren't very excessive, but they're still tons to see. And of course, the "Predator" is the real star in this film; that, and the special effects (which still looks realistic today).』
(Not exact but okay) 『Ths item was posted as 'Widescreen' version but was not. Arrived quick and in listed good condition but thought I was getting what was shown as something it wasn't. ~CC』
(Arnold is something else) 『Made when Arnold still had a great deal of muscle to spare. This movie, like a lot of science fiction, assumes aliens will be a hostile group. Those races that make it to space would have the intelligence and capacity to engage new races more amicably than depicted. How else would such a race even reach the level of achieving the ability to travel in space unless they had learned to live in peace. Otherwise they would not have lasted long enough to do so. 』 『The ultimate hunter meets the ultimate adversary?in the ultimate Collector?s Edition DVD! Arnold Schwarzenegger wages an all-out war against an unseen enemy, a force more powerful and deadly than any on Earth?because the Predator is not of this Earth. Now, you can explore the depths of the Predator jungle with this all-new 2-disc set packed with over 5 hours of out-of-this-world extras, including an in-depth documentary, director?s commentary, never-before-seen bonus footage, revealing featurettes and more!』 『RambomeetsAlienin this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year beforeDie Hardmade him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant.--Jeff Shannon』

First of You have Stuart Gordon director of the superlative Re-Animator and Dagon. In addition From Beyond is also a HP Lovecraft adaptation.
Moreover, there is the cast... Jeffrey Combs is a Lovecraft movie staple and a fine actor. Scream Queen Barbara Crampton famous for the greatest receiving head scene in cinematic history (Re-Animator again and the head in question was decapitated and alive) and is tied with Michelle Johnson as the quintessential blonde sex symbol of the eighties.
Heck the movie even has Dawn of the Dead hero the always-watchable Ken Foree.
There is nudity, bondage, brain eating, slime and silly monsters.
It simply does not gel as a movie.
Pacing and the script seem to be the enemy of the good here. For a movie with so many gladdening elements, it can be a true slog. From Beyond seems to drag just when the getting is well getting good.
The monsters are neither terribly scary nor funny they are just slimy puppets of various sizes. There is no sense of fun in the film and it certainly does not get one involved enough to care about the characters fates.
Barbara Crampton spends too much time in large oversized glasses and a tight bun in her hair and buy the time she lets her hair down (and her bondage gear on) Jeffery Combs is bald, naked and making guttural sounds.
As for the story... well I have seen the film twice and I have still no real idea what is going on. (Something to do with monsters from another dimension and the pineal gland) From Beyond is certainly worth a watch for fans of Gordon, Lovecraft or Crampton but I cannot help feel that this was a colossal missed opportunity.』
(JUST AS I REMEMBERED) 『I saw this film years ago and enjoyed it. It may not be indicative of 'great cinema', but it is a great example of both imaginative special effects and one of several of the odd characters of which only Jeffrey Combs is capable of creating.』
(The Pineal Gland Gone Awry!) 『It took a little while to figure out where this movie was coming from, and perhaps more importantly, where it was going. The opening sets up the spooky mansion, mad scientist&assistant, weird experiments--and a noisy next door neighbor lady&her little dog sneaking around--and a sort of funny, madcap scene. So one might think, Ah-oh, a comedy! But is it Lovecraft?
It is...and it isn't.
The script brings in a lot of 80's motifs: Kinky sex, a racially mixed cast, drugs, decadence, etc. The really funny thing is that, while having little to do with HP, it all ties in&works.
What really is "Lovecraftian" about the film is the theme. It asserts that the pineal gland in the forehead (often metaphorically associated with The Third Eye), if scientifically stimulated, acts as a bridge between our world and a dimension inhabit by psychically destructive worm and snakelike creatures that can enter our world and wreck havoc. The effects are quite good, you can relate to the actors, and there's plenty of chills `n thrills.

(repulsive, detestable, complete garbage) 『this movie was a waste of time to watch and a waste of my money to buy it. it is a unacceptable movie which reflects the serious mental problems the creators and the producers have !』 『The second H.P. Lovecraft adaptation by Stuart Gordon FROM BEYOND is pure Lovecraftian science-terror. Out-there scientist Dr. Pretorious (Ted Sorel) and his assistant Dr. Tillinghast (Jeffery Combs) are working towards breaking through earthly perceptions and revealing a new alternate universe. They do this by stimulating the pineal gland of the human brain which enables people to see the strange creatures that inhabit a parallel dimension. Unfortunately these creatures can now see humans as well and they are none too pleased with it. Dr. Pretorious is killed by the floating monstrosities but the police blame his assistant for the murder and lock him up. Only Dr. Katharine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) believes the insane tales of Dr. Tillinghast and it's up to her to shut down the experiment that threatens to unleash the other-dimensional creatures on this universe forever. Great special effects and solid performances by Combs and Crampton complement a near-perfect realization by Gordon of Lovecraft's vividly detailed and chilling vision of scientific possibilities.System Requirements:Running Time: 85 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: R UPC: 027616085504 Manufacturer No: M108550』

(Support Troma) 『This Troma DVD represents amazing value for money with two films on the disc plus the kind of extras for the main feature you used to get from Anchor Bay and Blue Underground all for a super low price. The picture and sound quality are both acceptable for such a rare movie, which is not a classic, but is very good for such a low budget production, with some creepy-ish moments and sprinklings of gore, but the desolate village location and underground scenes are effectively distinctive from other pictures of this genre. Paul Naschy steals every scene he's in and no-one puts in a shoddy performance. I'd never seen this film before, but I'm proud to add it to my collection. I can only hope Troma gains the support of horror fans enabling them to acquire more rare treats to pour some love over, the DVD case is nice too in a white case with terrific cover art. My 5 star rating is for the overall package of value and love shown to fans by Troma.』

(Spanish horror dvd overstuffed with cool extras) 『The recent Troma DVD is the best option to date for watching this gloomy, atmospheric chiller about the walking dead. Most versiosn are missing gore or nudity, but Troma has taken great pains to present a complete presentation, albiet sourced from a few different places. Teh film is presneted with the English dub ( no original Spanish with English subs ) and with all the 'good bits' intact. The disc really excells in the extra department as well, with three interviews with the people responsible for it's creation, a director's commentary track in Spanish with English subtitles, a trailer and poster gallery, and a complete second feature, THE SWEET SOUND OF DEATH from 1965. If you are a fan of Spanish horror or Paul Naschy ( he is very good here in a supporting role )you simply cannot go wrong here, especially for the asking price.』 『A stranger's arrival to a 19th-century Scottish village to claim his inheritance is met with apocalyptic visions and other evil omens. I had no expectations, just thinking the premise was pretty cool - I was completely blown away by how well done the acting, the effects, the storyline, it really is really quite good. Great story pacing, great music score, the creatures were well done, the main actors all well cast, just all around a top notch film! 』
(Surprisingly good) 『A low budget, B-movie blast that ends up being a surprisingly good modern monster movie, Infestation is plenty enjoyable. Chris Marquette (Freddy VS Jason, The Girl Next Door) stars as Cooper, a slacker office drone, who becomes an unlikely hero when mutant alien bugs invade and begin to kill and cocoon everything and everyone in sight. Eventually, Cooper teams up with a handful of survivors (including hottie Brooke Nevin) as they fight off the hordes of giant bugs, with a good amount of tongue in cheek humor filling everything out in between. For a low budget flick, Infestation boasts some pretty good special effects work, and with genre stalwart Ray Wise along for the ride as Cooper's militant father, what's not to like here? All in all, Infestation is definitely something that is worth your time and attention.』
(Where did this come from?) 『This is a recent movie but I don't remember seeing it as either a theatrical or DVD release. I came across it while researching another film and I'm glad I did. This is one nifty little flick. It's a monster movie plain and simple but it grabs a bit of this and that from here and there and puts it all together in an enjoyable fashion.
Chris Marquette plays a slacker who can't even cut it in his crappy phone sales job. But all of the sudden he wakes up covered in a cocoon and looks around the office to find everyone in the same situation. He frees a few people, including his boss who had just fired him and realizes they're far from out of the woods. The office is infested with these big, nasty bugs and a plan needs to be hatched to figure out how they're going to survive.
Like Night of the Living Dead, the bad stuff starts right away with no explanation as to how it all came about. Like John Carpenter's The Thing, some of the group have "turned" and some effort goes into figuring out who is still human. Like Aliens, the queen bug has to be found so she can be wiped out along with her brood.
Chris Marquette's character "Cooper" helps make this film. It's a decently written part and he plays it well. Brooke Nevin plays the love interest and the two work well together. The rest of the crew are good enough but rather 2 dimensional, with the possible exception of Ray Wise who plays Marquette's ex-military father. The character doesn't rise much above cliche but Wise is a veteran actor and brings a lot to the role.
This never gets too scary and the humor makes it a fun watch. The climax could have been more....climactical but it's what Eight Legged Freaks should have been and I'm seriously thinking of adding this to my library. It's a jolly good time. 』

(Loved this movie) 『Arguably the best creature feature since Tremors Attack Pack (Tremors/ Tremors 2 - Aftershocks/ Tremors 3 - Back to Perfection/ Tremors 4 - The Legend Begins). Other than a bit of gratuitous nudity it should have been rated PG-13. This is just plain fun . Giant Bugs that unlike most recent SyFy fare don't make you cringe at their execution.Another throw back to the days of monsters that weren't slashers disguised as creatures. Highly recommended for genre fans!Bring on the sequels!』 『FEAR TAKES OVER A MUNDANE WORKDAY WHEN SLACKER OFFICE DRONE COOPER WAKES UP IN A MASSIVE COCOON SPUN BY A MUTANT, FLESH EATING INSECTS.
