(An ok way to kill some time)
『I have been reading a lot of raving reviews here on Amazon about this flick, but I have a good feeling that some of them are linked to the film makers, so I didn't put my expectations to high for this one. The story was pretty good, although pretty predictable, and I thought the acting was above par for an indie horror movie like this one. My biggest complaint is about the gore and special effects, they kinda sucked here. The CGI completely ruined a lot of the kills. I listened to the commentary and you could tell that the film makers were not happy with the effects either. I can watch a movie with the worst acting and dumbest story on earth, but if there are cool kills and great special effects, I will watch it a hundred times. This movie was an ok way too kill 1 1/2 hours. I recommend renting before buying.』

(Ugly Baby !!!!!)
『The hills run red is a great slasher flick , great acting , great story , lots of gore . Cant wait for the sequel .』

(It's splatterific)
『Telling the story of a young filmmaker whose obsession with an out-of-print old horror film (also named The Hills Run Red) leads him on an ill-fated mission to track down the director, the film takes us on a mini-tour of horror conventions through the ages. The trailer for the film within the film is pure `70s exploitation with its grim and grainy feel while the banter between the male leads about the nature of slasher films is a direct homage to the `90s and the aforementioned Scream series. Plenty of other horror characteristics are referenced throughout the films lean running time but without ever descending into cliché.

The hulking killer who graces the film's promotional art is named Babyface and while he is clearly just another in a long line of visually arresting horror movie villains, that is exactly what he is meant to be. He is the killer of the movie's lost horror masterwork and his cracked porcelain mask and necklace of baby rattles and building blocks are exactly what you would expect from a character in such a film. This does not stop them from looking awesome however and Parker gets the best of both worlds by using the character as the real-world killer too.

The film does have a few problems and it isn't always quite as smart as it would like you to think it is. Though it has a few very cool effects shots and killings it does leave you wanting a little more from the enigmatic Babyface in order to make him a serious threat. It also has a few plot-holes and logic inconsistencies which threaten to pull you out of the action but thankfully this threat is never fully realised and the whole thing moves along so swiftly that any pit-falls are quickly forgotten, especially once William Sadler's insane movie director makes his appearance in the final act.

It should be said that all the cast acquit themselves wonderfully and turn in solid performances but it is truly Sadler's show once he arrives. Chewing scenery like crazy and dominating every frame he appears in his presence boosts the film to a new bonkers level. The third act isn't all about his character however and there are a few lovely twists and turns from John Carchietta's script which it would be criminal to spoil by revealing here.

A loving tribute to both contemporary and classic horror as well as everything in between, The Hills Run Red delivers a fresh take on a very well worn but very much loved formula. Inventive, intelligent and willing to go the whole bloody distance, it succeeds in giving laughs, scares and, rarest of all, a few genuine chills. Let's just hope we see more of Babyface in the inevitable sequel.

(Great movie)
『I hestitated a while before watching this movie. Well dont wait great, horror flick! Excellent film quality on a b rated movie and good story line and great acting!』

(Better than it should be)
『What may appear by its cover to be a direct-to-DVD rip-off of The Hills Have Eyes is anything but, as The Hills Run Red is instead a gore-drenched shocker that is better than it should be by all accounts and purposes. The story of the film involves a film buff named Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck from Lost Boys: The Tribe) who is on a search for a lost horror film from the 80s called The Hills Run Red, that all prints of which mysteriously vanished. His search for the film leads him to a gorgeous stripper (Sophie Monk) who turns out to be the daughter of the film's director, and along for the ride are Tyler's girlfriend (Janet Montgomery) and best pal (Alex Wyndham). As all four venture into the woods where the film was originally shot, they are soon stalked by the missing film's masked killer Babyface (Raicho Vasilev) who turns out to be anything but fake. Loaded with some spectacularly gross moments and some nice twists, The Hills Run Red is definitely better than it has any right to be otherwise, with its killer flaw being the fact that the film as a whole ends up succomming to the genre flaws that it riffs. Still though, there's enough here for gorehounds and horror fans alike to admire, including the great William Sadler making the most of his screentime, which also helps in making The Hills Run Red a worthwhile trip regardless of its flaws.』
『You heard the story. The one about the goriest, bloodiest splatter flick ever, the one made in the’80s but mysteriously lost. Flash forward to now: Young cinema buffs search for the secret location where the movie was shot, hoping to find the film. What they find is that the goriest, bloodiest splatter flick ever is more than a movie. It’s real. And it’s happening to them. The Hills Run Red with a whole new level of horror as the terrified interlopers confront a demented killer who covers his hacked-up face with a babydoll mask. Wait, Babyface is just a character from the movie, right? Wrong. He’s alive. He’s waiting. He’s thrilled to meet fans who will die – slowly, gruesomely, shockingly – for his art. Roll camera!』
『There was once a film so terrifying, so incredibly scary, that it only briefly played theaters and was immediately suppressed. And possibly destroyed. Never heard of it? That's because this urban-legend mystery exists in director Dave Parker'sThe Hills Run Red, a clever little number about a group of young cineastes on the trail of the aforementioned movie. Would-be filmmaker Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrinck) finds a stripper named Alexa (Sophie Monk), who just happens to be the daughter of the mysterious director of the legendary lost film; Tyler drags two other friends (Janet Montgomery, Alex Wyndham) into the woods to research the location shooting of that fabled project. Since these characters are all hip in a post-Screamway to the dangers of young people going off into the woods, there's plenty of self-conscious humor about horror-movie clichés. Sure enough, once they leave civilization, the inbred weirdos and secret hiding places and gothically bizarre torture implements begin to crop up. The movie gets points for being clever, and there's at least one great plot-shifting moment (it involves the wordfetch); but once the blood starts running, a familiar series of lacerations and punctures fills in for character development. Veteran character actor William Sadler runs a few variations on the classic bad guy, and Parker introduces a mask-wearing, knife-wielding killer who's clearly meant to join the ranks of Jason and Pinhead and other slasher icons. Call him… Babyface! In other words, not terrible for a direct-to-DVD offering from the Dark Castle company, but not great. The Babyface sequel can't be far off.--Robert Horton

(Blade: Trinity)
『Blade Trinity is a wonderful movie but takes a different path then the first two. If you are looking for a good action flick with humor thrown in, Blade Trinity is definitly for you.』

(underated...)
『Marvel Comics didnt support this series like the others. matter of fact, Stan Lee didnt have the decency to appear in any of the movies, yet Wesley Snipes still created a Blade that no one else couldve pulled off. and this particular movie had the comedic Ryan Reynolds in it with his incredible one-liners. i rated this a 5 star because despite all the odds Blade still did it!』

(Blade Trinity... All right Marvel; No more movies I mean it.)
『Blade Trinity: 1/10: Press reports at the time of Blade: Trinity's release claimed that star Wesley Snipes went off the deep end and tried to kill the director David S. Goyer. Lord knows he could have gotten away with it. Show the jury this movie and let the acquittals fly.

After two better than we deserved films the third Blade is a mess. For one thing the casting director is insane. The good guys consist of Snipes, Gabby Hayes (Kris Kristofferson), Elektra (Jessica Biel), Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds), a retarded guy, a blind woman and Newt from Aliens.

The good guys have a "club" called the Nightstalkers. (What no Darren McGavin). Biel fights with an overtly plugged iPod playing horrible techno. (I would think being able to hear would be important in hand-to-hand combat) Reynolds's character spouts off endless one liners (most of them remarkably lame) and is saddled with the name Hannibal King. (Also needless to say remarkably lame) and fights with a light saber bow. (Please see above).

Speaking of lame we have the bad guys. We have wrestler triple H (who cannot act), Parker Posey (who cannot speak with the fangs in her mouth) and best of all Dracula (Who calls himself Drake. Thinks he is in a Highlander movie. He is also a pacifist piece of Euro trash that looks like he fell of a Harlequin romance book cover. And is easily the least convincing screen Dracula I have ever scene (I'm including both George Hamilton and Mel Brooks in this equation).

The script is awful (even if you remove Reynolds's one-liners), the film was edited in a Cuisinart, the continuity was done by the blind girl, and the plot consists of bad guys finding good guys headquarters, then good guys finding bad guys headquarters.

If your still not convinced a contribution to Mr. Snipes potential legal defense fund is in order let me remind you. Parker Posey is the head vampire and has a climatic battle with Van Wilder. You can make the check out to cash.

(Good movie for good vamp kicks bad vamp butt!)
『Good movie for special "bloody" special effects. If you like Wesley Snipes and killing vampires this is a good movie for you.』

(Blade - Trinity (New Line Platinum Series))
『I Love the movie Blade - Trinity DVD Now I have the full start to finish Movies of Blade TYSM For this Amazon Keep up the wonderful work!!!
TYSM Amazon.com for letting all of us have a wonderful online place thats secure and very Relaxed Customer Service I Give not only Blade - Trinity (New Line Platinum Series) 5 Stars Amazon too :P

TYSM again ;-))~』

『The final battle begins and the trinity comes to an end! Blade is back and his enemies have grown in number since they resurrected their king, Dracula. Together with a new group of vampire hunters, called the Nightstalkers, led by Whistler's strong but beautiful daughter Abigail and the wise-cracking Hannibal, they must finally defeat the vampires or face inevitable extinction.』
『Even skeptical fans of theBladefranchise will enjoy sinking their teeth intoBlade: Trinity. The law of diminishing returns is in full effect here, and the franchise is wearing out its welcome, but let's face it: any movie that features Jessica Biel as an ass-kicking vampire slayer and Parker Posey--yes, Parker Posey!--as a vamping vampire villainess can't be all bad, right? Those lovely ladies bring equal measures of relief and grief to Blade, the half-human, half-vampire once again played, with tongue more firmly in stone-cold cheek, by Wesley Snipes. With series writer David S. Goyer in the director's chair, the film is calculated for mainstream appeal, trading suspenseful horror for campy humor and choppy, nonsensical action. The franchise still offers some intriguing ideas, however, including Drake (Dominic Purcell), the original vampire, whose blood contains the secret that could destroy all blood-suckers in a plot that incorporates a sinister "blood farm" where humans are held--and drained--in suspended animation. And Biel's wise-cracking sidekick (Ryan Reynolds) in her cadre of "Nightstalkers" provides comic relief in a series that's grown increasingly dour. All of which makesBlade: Trinitya love-it-or-hate-it sequel... supposedly the last in a trilogy, but the ending suggests otherwise.--Jeff Shannon

(TCM Sci-Fi collection)
『TCM's Sci-Fi collection is truly great collection of four films.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of the all-time great films. A very interesting film about a flight to the Saturn system, the discovery of a simple black slab on the moon and the insanity of a computer! You have to watch this film to appreciate it. No words can explain it.
"Soylent Green" is food. A very unusual film. Quite distrubing for it's time and now.
"The Time Machine" another H.G. Wells novel come to life. Very good special effects and story. Interesting concept and characters.
"Forbidden Planet" is one of the greatest Sci-Fi films ever made. It's very advanced for the time (1954) and the story is terrific. The characters are really good and the cast is excellent. See if you recognize anything abpout this film in relation to other films and TV shows which came after.
Every review I've ever read about this film always mentioned Shakespear's "The Tempest". Well I'm only mentioning it because all the other reviews did too. I've never read "The Tempest" nor seen an adaptation of it so I have no idea if it resembles that play. I just took the film by itself.
Buy this collection. You won't be disappointed.』

(Could be better but pretty darn good)
『This is a good sci-fi collection. Personally,I think "2001" is overrated like many of Kubrick's films but there is no denying its influence. Both " Forbidden Planet" and "Time Machine" are classics, offering good storylines, memorable characterizations and the feminine charms of Anne Francis and Yvette Mimieux, respectively. While I think "The Day The Earth Stood Still","The Thing From Another Planet","Invasion of the Body Snatchers","Them" or the later "Close Encounters" would have been more worthy candidates for inclusion,"Soylent Green" is not without its merits, though the modern viewer will figure things out fairly early on, I suspect. All in all, pretty darn good and ,at this price,a good value ,too.』

(sci-fi classics)
『Received the item on time and was happy to see the quality of the DVD's. There are 2 DVDs with 2 movies each. Read side A as side B has no titles. I thought I would get 4 DVDs but after reading side A I was happy to be able to save storage space by having them this way. I am very happy with the movies and service! It is wonderful being able to buy my favorites like this and have ordered more classics as well. If you like older movies and want to get good quality and save money then these are the packages for you!』

(terrific collection , what do you have to lose ?)
『as noted elsewhere , these films are presented in their proper aspect ratios and are all fun classics . with todays' heavy reliance on CGI in sci-fi filmaking , these films are more than desirable , they're essential . all films have english subtitles .』

(Great Sci-Fi Collection!)
『You get all four movies: Soylent Green, The Time Machine, Forbidden Planet, and 2001 for one great price! All have been beautifully restored and include some features. Stop thinking about it and just buy it!』

(Awesome movie)
『This movie is very motivational, it does makes you think about the time we are living now.』

(Could be shorter)
『This film has a solid Christian foundation and the message of connecting Christ's words and direction for our lives comes through very well. I believe it could have been communicated more quickly. The early part of the film (the struggle to have it printed) was too long. Also, the various scenes of the professor's visit to the future could have been done more quickly by shortening his experiences in the different scenarios he confronted; i.e., getting to the point more quickly.』

(So Bad It's Hilarious - and Scary)
『I saw this movie on the Gospel Music Channel recently. Part of me wanted to give this movie at least 4 out of 5 stars just like I'd give "Plan 9 From Outer Space" that score. It is so bad and so so-self-consciously self-important it's hilarious. The only reason I didn't give it that score is that I don't want it averaged in with all the other Fundamentalist Christian shills here who were either put up to write a good review for a movie they didn't see, or worse, ignorant, brain-washed, and close-minded enough to take this garbage seriously.

As a Christian I'm also offended and even scared by this movie and its message of censorship and intolerance. In fact, if I didn't know it was made by and for Christians I would have thought it was a parody of Christians made by atheists. So let me review this movie from the perspective of a Christian who doesn't take perverse pleasure in fantasizing about Armageddon and the horrible eternal fire awaiting billions of people with decent morals simply for not giving proper credit to Jesus Christ for them.

Anyway, as much as I find this movie offensive, it's unintended hilarity makes for fine entertainment if you aren't brain dead. The stilted acting by a cast of stale has-beens and never weres, pretentious dialogue, continuity errors, and plot holes so large they could swallow Nebraska somehow come together into a work of unintended sublime comedy gold.

The movie is about a biblical scholar, Russell Carlisle, as our "Time Changer" who travels through time from the 1890's to 2002 and changes... absolutely nothing. Carlyle's character of a Victorian era prude is played "convincingly" by D. David Morin, in that he has a big beard and doesn't use contractions. Those two attributes really helped me willfully suspend my disbelief so that I could enjoy the riotously hilarious plot, which is as follows: At the suggestion and doing of his colleague, Dr. Anderson (played by the indomitable Gavin McLeod), Carlisle travels from the fictional country/era of the United States of Fundamentalist Christians via a time machine so that he can see for himself the dangers of distinguishing morality as separate from the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I use the word "fictional" as it hopefully applies to the majority Americans that have graduated high school, not blown their minds out on drugs, or suffered a serious head injury. If you don't fall into any of the criteria above, or you happen to be one of the screenwriters, you probably think that the United States was once a brittle, austere theocracy in which stuffy, community theater actors paraded around scolding knickerbocker-clad children with bibles tucked under their arms. But seeing as we're dealing with creative minds that believe the Earth is only about 10,000 years-old, why bother about historical accuracy?

Anyway, after Dr. Carlisle is stood on the time machine pad, Dr. Anderson puts on dark protective goggles to protect him from the indirect extremely bright "time-changer" light his machine beams right into Dr. C's face and body to transport him to 2002. Funny thing is, Dr. C was not blinded in the process since Dr. A didn't bother to give him any goggles to wear. Such little touches of error or signs of Christian caring (actually the lack thereof), are some of the things that make this trash so fun to watch.

Carlisle then gives us the perfunctory "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" routine where upon seeing water fountains, automobiles, and motion pictures he goes into a Beagle-like torpor, craning his head from side to side and dropping his jaw a little. This, by the way, comprises about two thirds of D. David Morin's acting range and adds to the long, long list of unintentional hilarities as ALL of these modern marvels existed before 1890!

Carlisle then encounters a slew of modern, profound, societal dilemmas would test anyone's Christian mettle such as: children stealing hot dogs, teenagers peacefully convening on street corners after dark, lingerie displays, well mannered laundry mat owners, and my personal favorite, movies that contain dialogue with the words "God" and "Damn" in them. In this particular scene, Carlisle goesto see a film with a church group in which the aforementioned is uttered by an actor. Dr. C. is then seen running from the theater and into the lobby, shouting hysterically at the popcorn clerks about blasphemy and pleading they should "stop this at once!!!"

In another scene, Carlisle, like many strangers who mysteriously arrive at church group, is invited to talk to a science class in a public school by a teacher. He greets the class and then immediately begins a symposium on how God, our father, is the core off all science, and that everything written in the bible has been proved as actual, literal, indisputable fact. After he is quickly ushered away by the teacher and told his behavior was inappropriate, Carlisle's sadness and inability to understand this cruel future are punctuated by an extreme close-up, and heart-wrenching, incidental music. I actually pulled a muscle in my upper rib cage from laughing.

The film culminates by telegraphing the Fundamentalist mantra via a tender dialogue between Carlisle and a sympathetic Christian librarian played be Jennifer O'Neill, in what must be a new career low for this has-been model. She proclaims that Satan's greatest victory was removing the word of God in secular entertainment and public schools. Yes, my rib was still hurting at this point, but it wasn't over yet.

Before Carlisle returns to his time and fictional nation, he revisits Eddie Martinez, the well mannered, patient, and helpful laundry mat owner played by Z list actor and comedian Paul Rodriguez. In a most frank, earnest, and unwittingly hilarious moment, Carlisle tells Eddie that no matter how good a person he is in this lifetime, he will burn in hell lest he give credit to Jesus Christ for the source of his morality. In fact, there is no difference between his productive and generally moral life than that of a child rapist or a murderer, that is, in the eyes of God at least. Eddie then promises to read the bible. Wouldn't you?

Near the end of Dr. C's vacation in the future, he returns to the alley where the transport home is to take place. He is followed there by two guys from the church group with a sort of gay aura-thing going on, who have been investigating this stranger and insist on confronting him and potentially arresting him somehow (for what? - he hasn't broken any laws). Of course, these Christians aren't "real" Christians because they don't interpret scripture just like Dr. C. So to set them straight he LIES to them as the "time-changer" light is getting ready to grab him by saying the light is Jesus implying he's being raptured. I guess it's OK for good Christians to lie or deceive to promote the faith. What a great example to set....

Carlisle then returns home to a decade devoid of antibiotics and full of violent racism, women who can't vote, and gruesome child labor and tells Dr. Anderson what he has observed in his "experiment." He tells him that not giving props to Jesus in the "works cited" page we call "life" will lead the country down a path to destruction as proved by the proclivity of hot dog theft, people kissing on TV, and science unfettered by creationism. Yes, the petty and vindictive God will send even good people straight to an eternity of burning pain, because he desires credit for the work more than he does the results of "goodness." Strangely, Carlisle leaves out that life expectancy has doubled, indoor plumbing is common, and Jim Crowe has been outlawed when reporting back to Dr. Anderson. Huh.

Dr. Anderson then wonders how long mankind has before Jesus destroys the world in a ball of fire that will consume all non-believers, or: the ultimate, orgasmic-like fantasy of all religious fundamentalist zealots be they Christian or Muslim.

Anyway, please watch this turd, if for nothing more than a good laugh, than for the salvation of your very real soul, one that should see intolerance, censorship, and torture fantasy for what it is: About one more gay-bashing away from flying airplanes into buildings.

(And by the way, try to find this movie on cable or watch it on YouTube but don't buy it unless you like supporting those who would effectively burn the Constitution and turn the U.S. into a theocracy.)』

(Neat and entertaining movie)
『We rented this movie through Netflix on the advice of a friend. Although it moves slowly in the beginning, it picks up along the way. There is some drama and tension in the movie, which is nice. It does date itself at times, particularly when looking at the "modern" world in the movie. However, as time passes you realize how on target the movie is. What was seen as a more sinful "modern" world would be an age of innocence to us today. It really does highlight how accurate this movie may have been after all.
I have read reviews that mention the movie doesn't address the sins of the historical time in the movie. No, it doesn't, but that isn't the point. The point of the movie is the more we remove Christ from society, the more sin becomes mainstream and normal. Also, not everyone in historical American embraced slavery (ever hear of abolitionist and the many states that didn't allow slavery?). There has been sin since the days of Adam and Eve, the point is how sin is viewed. The point of the film seems to be that the more we push Christ away, the more acceptable sin becomes to society.
Four stars because it does have some slow parts and the acting is strained at times. But overall, a great film that is entertaining and can be viewed by the entire family.』

(Timeless!)
『Too bad Amazon's editor let his personal views taint his review with a negative slant. THIS MOVIE IS FANTASTIC. The idea of being able to fast forward to a future where our current beliefs and standards no longer exsist is definitely food for thought and possibly heartbreaking as well. The acting is first class. Some of the situations are almost comical, especially the differences in spoken English. Whether it's your faith or environmental standards or economic hopes, this movie makes you wonder...what would you want to preserve for the future? Definitely makes you aware of how decisions and comprimises made today affect tomorrow. Not thumping my Bible, to me the Christian theme and showing the ideals that we have lost is icing on the movie cake.』
『The year is 1890 and Bible Professor Russell Carlisle has written a new manuscript. His book is about to receive an unanimous endorsement from the board members at Grace Bible Seminary until his colleague, Dr. Norris Anderson, has a difficulty with something. Dr. Anderson believes what Carlisle has written could greatly affect future generations. Using a secret time machine, Anderson sends Carlisle over 100 years into the future, offering him a glimpse of where his beliefs will lead.』
Time Changermay be a little strident in its core message (i.e., ethics don't count unless they're backed by the force of Christ), but as an above-average feature for the Christian market, it's pretty agreeable. D. David Morin stars as a late-19th-century Bible professor named Carlisle, whose efforts to publish a book arguing that morals can be taught independent of Christ's teachings is denounced by one Dr. Anderson (Gavin Macleod), a board member at Carlisle's seminary. Anderson, who happens to be in possession of a time machine, sends Carlisle to the year 2001, where the latter quickly discovers the pitfalls of a secular world with relative morality and no absolute (i.e., Christian) standards.Time Changer's seasoned supporting cast, including Paul Rodriguez, Jennifer O'Neill, and Hal Linden, bring a professional gloss to the film that helps counter its thematic single-mindedness, while director Rich Christiano serves up some passable science fiction to go with all the preaching.--Tom Keogh

(Best anime of the decade)
『I've like dragonball and cowboy bebop and ghost in the shell s.a.c. and this show beat them all. It is a really, really, did I forget to mention really , really great show. Watch it. It's a good show.』

(Anime at it's best)
『Great anime for people who love anime. In this season mysteries are solved and things only become more weird.Ed and Al don't like what they find but it's to late to turn back now.If you don't like the end don't worry their is a movie that takes place after the series that raps up any lose ends.』

(The Second Half of a Brilliant Story)
『"Fullmetal Alchemist" follows the adventures of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, in a parallel world called Amestris, which closely resembles our own. There is one fundamental difference: in Amestris, the science of alchemy has superceded all of our sciences in importance. It's obvious why: alchemy combines all of them. If you understand the composition of matter, you can almost instantly take something--lead, say, or dirt--and create gold or flowers out of it. Matter is matter; matter of any kind can become matter of anything. There is one rule to this science, however: the law of equivalent exchange. To gain, something of equal value must be lost. The one exception to this rule is life: there is no matter of any kind that can be traded for life.

After the sudden death of their mother, Edward and Alphonse ignore this crucial rule, and try to bring her back. The attempt ends in disaster: Alphonse loses his human body, and Edward is maimed. The creature they made is nothing like their mother: it is a monster.

In order to restore Al's body, Edward has no alternative but to find the Philosopher's Stone, the only object on earth that can skirt the rule of equivalent exchange. However, the military is the only organization with real information on the Stone. So, in order to obtains what he needs, Edward must join the military--losing most of his freedom in the process. It's equivalent exchange all over again.

In the second season, the consequences grow more dire, the storylines deeper, more emotional, more moving, and more tragic. Pursued by evil, inhuman creatures known as the Homunculi who are also after the Stone, Edward ends up separated from Alphonse, and the two brothers embark on individual, parallel courses in order to do what they must, courses that could end the life of one or both before their goal is reached--or before they ever see each other again.

"Fullmetal Alchemist" has a brilliant story populated with brilliant characters. Both the plot and the people are among the best I have ever encountered in a fictional work of any kind. I'm not even an anime fan; I stumbled on this because I thought the story sounded cool. It's beyond cool; I don't often use this word, but I will repeat: it is brilliant. I can't recommend it enough.』

(FMA is one of the most amazing anime ever)
『This is a great anime. A great and touching end to the series and should be seen by everyone.』

(If you love the show)
『If you love the show you will love this box set. It comes with guide books and plenty of extras. My daughter loves the series and has been very pleased with her videos.

Now we just need the Brotherhood series to complete our collection.』

『When the Elric brothers recklessly attempted to raise their mother from the dead, the horrors they unleashed marked the beginning of a long journey into the darkest corners of the cruelty of mankind. Now, destinies are converging for those who remain to fight for the light of salvation.

The hunt for the truth behind truths is growing more desperate, and ruined Ishbal waits at the end of a road choked with wreckage both human and soulless. Amid rumors of new war and resurrected horrors of the past, hidden masters rush their pawns down this path of betrayal and doubt. As these seekers of the Philosopher’s Stone grasp for answers, the most sacred tenet of Alchemy is questioned – The Law of Equivalent Exchange. But the harshest judgment is reserved for the belief on which the Elrics have built their lives – the faith in an unbreakable bond between brothers. Weary and broken, Edward and Alphonse must face the ultimate sacrifice. Will it be enough to make them whole?

(Great, Well-Thought Out Compilation of "The Twilight Zone"! Worth The Price!)
『"The Twilight Zone-Season 1 (The Definitive Edition)" is an ungainly title but it does describe what you get inside the dvd box. The episodes are on flawless prints and there are many extras that I, a film, tv, and "Twilight Zone" buff would want to see in such a compilation, such as interviews with some of the actors superimposed over the episodes they appeared in, for example. Those interviews truly add to the appreciation and uniqueness of the series. There are also the lead-in commercials to other top shows of the period, such as "The Danny Thomas Show". That makes for a fine re-creation of what it was like to watch "The Twilight Zone" when it was first run. I wish there had been more interviews of other personnel working on the series. There's an "extra" I could've done without: an episode of "The Liars Club" that Rod Serling hosted in the early 1970's, but nothing's perfect, and it doesn't detract from the high value one gets from purchasing this dvd.』

(not the Twilight Zone it was to become)
『I purchased this first season hoping for a fun nostalgic Halloween viewing with friends, and it turned out that Rod Serling was just warming up here. The classic music was not a part of the episodes that we watched, and the (four?) episodes- out of many, it's really a lot of episodes- were all about alone-ness. After seeing these few, I wonder if Serling was in a reflective, perhaps depressed time of his life. They may have been ground-breaking at the time, but they aren't the mind twisters that I recall from late night television. Maybe season 2 is better?』

(You've just entered the Twilight Zone)
『Submitted for your approval: a classic series about fantastic tales, stretching beyond the imagination and goes beyond the years they were broadcast. A series we simply know most formally as, 'The Twilight Zone.' Though the series itself was first broadcast in 1959, I didn't officially become a TZ Visitor until about 30 years later. Originally watching these programs in syndication, I enjoyed watching these tales, which in consideration, were far better than the offerings we were given along the lines of sci-fi, horror and suspense of the Seventies and Eighties.

Without this wondrous dimension, we'd never have the existence of other anthology series. But I digress, the Twilight Zone Definitive Edition is aptly well-named, as this offering brings back the best of the series' offering.

Season One offers many of the classic tales we've made into identifiable icons for the series: The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, Time Enough at Last, The After Hours and Walking Distance (some which have now been recently made into graphic novels).

The interesting items about these tales, they maintain a timeless appeal to us. Besides being remastered from the negative, these episodes also contain 'And now, Mr. Serling,' in which Rod provides a trailer for the next show, as well as classic adverts for other programs and ads at the time. My only discern is, it seems the episodes cannot be played continuously as with most collections. However, at the writing of this review, I suspect the later volumes bring up this option.

Nonetheless, the Definitive Edition brings back the episodes the way they were meant to be viewed, uncut and unedited, with the stories intact. Remarkably, with those just visiting, or long-time tourists, The Twilight Zone Definitive Collection is the best product for those who loved the program and desire classic tales of beyond.

There's the signpost up ahead, your next stop: The Twilight Zone Definitive Edition Season 1.』

(One of the best Sci-fi tv shows)
『This is one of the best sci-fi shows of all time.
There are no flashy CGI special effects. It has something better. Something that is practically unheard of in tv today. Good, fun, and thought provoking stories.

『The complete first season of Rod Serling's classic, groundbreaking series exploring the fantastic and the frightening.』
『Submitted for your approval:The Twilight Zone's inaugural season, all 36 episodes complete with Rod Serling's original promos for the following week's episode, not seen since their original broadcast. To discuss television's greatest anthology series whose title has become pop culture shorthand for the bizarre and supernatural is to immediately become like Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd inTwilight Zone: The Movie; a can-you-top-this recall of famous shocks and favorite twists. Several essential episodes hail from this season, among them, "Time Enough at Last" starring Burgess Meredith as a bespectacled bookworm who is the lone survivor of an atomic blast; "The After-Hours" starring Anne Francis as a department store shopper haunted by mannequins; and the profoundly disturbing "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," in which fear and prejudice turns neighbor against neighbor (and, by the by, whose alien observers inspired Kang and Kodos onThe Simpsons).

From an unsettlingly persistent hitchhiker to a malevolent slot machine,The Twilight Zone's first season did plumb "the pit of man's fears." One forgets how moving the series could be. Three of this season's most memorable and enduring episodes are the poignant and primal "stop-the-world-I-want-to-get-off fantasies, "Walking Distance," "A Stop at Willougby" and "The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine," in which desperate characters seek refuge in a simpler past. Serling's few stabs at comedy ("Mr. Bevis," "The Mighty Casey") have not aged well, but the series finale, "A World of His Own," starring Keenan Wynn as a playwright whose fictional characters come to life, has a brilliant capper. The episodes are more deliberately paced than one might remember. Less patient younger viewers might be anxious to get to the payoffs, but once they settle into the rhythm, they will savor the literate writing and the performances by such veteran actors as Ed Wynn, Everett Sloan, and Ida Lupino, and newcomers such as Jack Klugman. The extras, including the unaired version of the pilot episode, "Where is Everybody?", audio commentaries and recollections, and a Serling college lecture, truly take this six-disc set to another dimension.--Donald Liebenson

(Pet Sematary (Special Collector's Edition))
『The Creeds have just moved to a new house in the countryside. Their house is perfect, except for two things, the semi-trailers that roar past on the narrow road, and the mysterious cemetary in the woods behind the house. The Creed's neighbours are reluctant to talk about the cemetary, and for good reason too. This scary and rather gory adaptation of Stephen King's great novel features outstanding central performances by Dale Midkiff and Fred Gwynne (who died in July 1993). One of the best (if not the best) Stephen King's movies. Dark as dark can be, surprising non-hollywood ending, terrifying atmosphere. Everything an excellent horror should be.』

(My Favorite Horror Movie Of All Time!!!)
『I have seen tons and tons of horror movies. But this one is my all time favorite. I am 18 years old but I still get the creeps everytime I watch this Stephen King Masterpiece.
The movie is about the Creed family moving into a new house. They thought everything was perfect and nuthing could go wrong. Boy where they wrong. There neighbor Jud Crandall tells louis about the place where the dead speak. An old Indian burial ground where your loved ones come back from the dead. But Jud forgot to mention one part your loved ones dont come back the same. They come back evil.
This movie is an all round classic and every horror movie fan has to see it. This movie is a must. Written by stephen King, the movie came out in 89' so you know it should be a good horror movie. 80's horror movies are the best. Pick it up at amazon.』

『The reason this "story" is scary is because you almost believe it can happen. A father loses a child and buries him in a place where there is a chance that this child will yet again come to be. Child returns....the rest you have to watch to get the full effect of the story/movie.

I do not recommend for people who scare easily and definitely not a movie for young kids. Traumatic - I still can't watch it again.』

『For most families, moving is a new beginning. But for the Creeds, it could be the beginning of the end. Because they’re just moved in next door to a place that children built with broken dreams, the Pet Sematary. It’s a tiny patch of land that hides a mysterious Indian burial ground with the powers of resurrection. Master of the Macabre, Stephen King, will take you and the Creeds to hell and back. (But theCreeds don’t have return tickets.) Your tour guide is kindly old Judd Crandall (Fred Gwynne), the neighborhood nice guy who knows the secrets of life, but has seen enough to firmly believe that "sometimes dead is better."』

I expected a dark, serious movie, not a "fun" and insanely cheesy kids movie. It was so bad they didn't even bother to make a sequel (guess you don't know everything, amazon reviewer guy).

I think my issues with this movie could be summed up easily enough by the fact that this is supposedly a VAMPIRE movie, yet there isn't a single drop of blood in the entire film.』

『And my job is to tell you what a great movie this is, and how eye poppingly wow the blu-ray is! A wonderful horror-adventure story paying homage to the universal monster movie classics! Hugh Jackman is fantastic in the lead role as Van Helsing and the rest of the cast make this a fun watch. Plenty of tongue and cheek moments but the action and scares will make you jump too. Completely enjoyable.

NOW FOR MY BLU-RAY THOUGHTS: For those of you who own the ultimate edition this blu-ray version comes with all the extras except for the original universal monster movies (Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman). If you want those I suggest picking up the special editions on DVD. As for the look and sound of this movie...WOW!!! DEMO DISC!!! SHOW THIS TO YOUR FRIENDS!!! ABSOLUTELY WORTHY TO UPGRADE!!!』

Having earned blockbuster clout withThe MummyandThe Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sanscredits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilledandexhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, everbore you. (one of the most important and fascinating films ever made)
『This movie is one-of-a-kind and it's a shame that no movies since produced have matched its spirit of creativity. I have nothing but complete and utter praise for every aspect of this movie, and I shall elaborate comprehensively.

The casting is incredible, as other reviewers have noted. Even the schizophrenic girl has a magic, stunning quality to her, religious and transcendent like alex grey's dmt art or downright frightening like Linda Blair. William Hurt is superb.

Even though he's existing within specific constructs in his role, somehow, to me, the entire range of his personality seems to come across in his presence. Although nowhere referenced, I feel the entire cultural pulse of the 70s, 80s and 90s, informing my feelings while watching this film. I feel the intergenerational energy, of university campuses and family communities. The I think this sense of importance and context agrees with the intentions of this film. There are a few scenes, as well, whose cinematographic quality amplifies this sense, beyond the stiff confines of life in New York State. The get-together shindig, specifically the corridor scene, in which Dr. Jessup and Emily first meet, is one of those scenes. It speaks of the cultural techno funnel of the 80s and 90s, of the aforementioned intergenerational energy. It's well connected and foreshadows the ultimate, climactic hallway scene in the movie, an ending for some reason scoffed at by some individuals, especially reviewers on this website, but that I find to be one of the most profound and moving scenes in any movies, to be a fundamental statement about psychedelic truths and humanity. A reviewer on this website, a supposed veteran of the psychedelic age--I have a lot of skepticism for such individuals, it should be noted (so many of these so called veterans have failed to translate any progress for future generations, a titanic failure in my opinion)--spoke of the false belief in the capacity of psychedelics for learning, betterment and progress. While the answer is certainly not a sure-fire Yes, I think this is opinion is an idiotic oversimplification. The movie does a great job in addressing this issue, and I'll talk more about this later.

Another great scene that speaks of vast cultural context are the house scenes in the height of summer. Apparently, Dr. Jessup and Emily managed to obtain some real estate w/ great country charm, a quintessential purple-mountain-majesties, sea-to-shining-sea house. Dr. Jessup's optimistic spiel about the untapped power of genetic memory, against this transcendent americana backdrop, is especially poetic. Perhaps genetic memory, of psychedelic american owls in the dawn of the great summer sun, is a leap of spiritual faith, but metaphorically speaking, the memory of humanity, at least a couple of great American generations back, if not thousands of years back, is not a "leap" of faith. It's a real and inspiring thing. Art can save us and help channel this memory and humanity, and to lose belief in this is to lose hope altogether.

Hurt as Dr. Jessup is likeable from the start, from the moment his assistant Arthur brings him out from a psychonautic salt tank setup and he starts blabbering enthusiastically, the adventuresome spirit is infectious. The delivery of his impressions during salt tank trips are astonishingly effective. One can imagine how easily the sensation and believability could have failed miserably with even the slightest difference in delivery and in the hands of a less skilled actor, and a lot of props should be given for these. They're among my favorite scenes in the movie and some of the most simple, yet effective, acoustically. The movie is at times terrifying, but also delightfully hilarious, and the scene of Jessup's first primordial flashback--in the truly Lillian, black-box isolation tank--in the company of Arthur and the highly esteemed, supervisor endocrinologist Dr. Mason, illustrates this. To be fair, the visual poetry of the shots in this scene contribute to its effects.

Some have compared this movie to other sci-fi films, like The Fly, or what have you, but none of those films are as important and symbolically cogent as Altered States. The visuals in this film are not merely stunning or dazzling; they're utterly accurate and truly communicative. Jessup's first salt tank hallucination--unaided by drugs--poignantly conveys the multidimensional nature of pain through overwhelming christ-images and multi-eyed mountain goats. The visuals of Jessup's first amanita muscaria experience convey the sensoral electricity and sensoral overload of certain drug states, as well as the sensation of dying, ego-loss and entering the void sometimes associated with certain powerful psychedelics, through a frightening,naturalistic-death-cult extravaganza visual parade. The interspersed images of constrictor snakes, conveys another aspect of sensations sometimes associated with powerful psychedelic experiences.

The film may and may not be accurate in its depiction of amanita muscaria. Last time I checked, Amanita Muscaria was noteable for its ibotenic acid and muscimol content, and NOT belladona/nightshade type alkaloids, like atropin and scopalamine, as Jessup's translator and guide in the Mexican highlands explicitly states. Perhaps this was intended to amplify the death-cult effect of the first Amanita trip in the film. I never even noticed this until one of my subsequent viewings of the film--at that point, the translator's speeches and the expositions of the head ceremonial brujo took on a terrifying forebearing tone.

I found the land of giants/victorian picnic imagery interspersed in the first Amanita trip sequence to hit the nail on the head. Cut into such a terrifying void-type experience, the mischmasch captures the psychological dialectic that could be called believable and accurate. Both for plot development/story arc and as an accurate picture of the psyche, this juxtaposition of americana ideals and the redemptive potential of love, of that other important person, is par excellence.

As I mentioned before, I think the love story arc is pivotal in the mix of psychedelics and humanity. Dr. Jessup's
reservation in affection is not without purpose. It's essential to the revelation at the culmination of the movie. Endocrinal primate regression I found to be a fantastic, surprising, original yet believable direction. But I also found the final transformations to be believable. Cellular level activities are all around us. At this level, the unwavering, cruel and primordial nature of living life, is visible in the proximity of inorganic and organic forces to each other. This is a good explanation for the significance of love. It is the expression of humanity, of compassion and mutual relief, that allows us to transcend the cruel physical realities of existence. I, personally, have acquaintance with trips into the cellular, molecular and inorganic voids, from unaided visions in early childhood, to later, LSD-enabled insights. I have wondered about the sequencing of human civilization, of instincts of satiation and lust, especially in a world full of so many people. But I have also myself glimpsed something so extraordinarly wholesome, beautiful and humanistic--if only briefly--thanks to the other psychotropically enlightened member of mycelium. The depths of my human system reverberated in such a fashion as to appreciate the unbroken thread of life connecting me to ancestors on the European plains, a reverberation that confirmed to me that all those individuals in the chain, felt the same way, rising and deflating, and crying out to their brethren, in their life miracles. I had glimpsed the existence of a tribe, through which the expression of humanity could be found, in my ancestral past, and gained insight into my contemporary journey in trying to
find my true tribe against the backdrop of an often nonsensical, molecular sensory electronic societal machine. There are good people out there, and it is this communal social quest that is the road to the satisfaction of our humanity.

The movie's indirect references to John C. Lilly and Dr. Richart Alpert are a good starting point in the debate in the role of psychedelics in learning, betterment and progress.

Ultimately, it is up to our good judgement, knowledge and human qualities that determine whether the insights gained from psychedelic experience can be translated into productive and worthwhile endeavours. Educated, thoughtful and determined individuals, talented in a broad array of disciplines, and those with well developed communication capacities--particularly artists--are in the best position to make use of psychedelic experiences and not waste them. Despite the pretensions of so-called "veterans" of the psychedelic era, I feel more often than not, too many of these folks wasted their experiences. Some reviewers on this website have tried to cursorily relegate the visual aesthetics of this movie to the already perfected pop-psychedelic art of their era. In fact, the notion of artistic perfection in "psychedelic" art from this era is a complete myth. I feel a lot of the art from that age fails miserably to even scratch the surface of psychedelic experience, let alone convey it. One must keep in mind that the psychedelic experience, in its significance and splendor, cannot be conveyed by anything less than the artist who understands life and the human experience in all its significance and splendor. Furthermore, technologies since then, especially since the 90s, have advanced quite a bit. The promise and potential of artistic communication and human understanding is greater than it has ever been.

The work of the two aforementioned, seminal psychedelic scientists, illuminates the multiple facets, the promises and challenges of translating psychedelic experiences into progress. For Dr. Richard Alpert, a very distinguished Psychologist of his time, psychedelics reinforced his convictions that, from the standpoint of the advancement of humanity and psychological science, the academic field was failing miserably, in its intellectual paradigms and in the mindless bureaucratic structures of academia. The movie partially touched upon these views, and I still believe they hold true, although since Richard Alpert's time, innumerous progress has been made in the field of neuroscience--the real scientific hope in the objective reference and measurement of emotional and conscious states (i.e. human experience). But, furthermore, unlike some of his psychedelic scientific peers of the age, I'm sure you know, Richard Alpert continued his journey, seeking psychological and humanistic progress, beyond the aid of drugs, journeying to India and engaging in various spiritual traditions. This, I agree with highly. Psychedelics are simply one method. They are an important method, but the real crux of the work lies on the shoulders of physiological, artistic and psychological advancement--using methods, that improve productivity and quality of life, that many people fail to practice: full-body exercise, comprehensive art, self-reflection and reflections of various sorts, as well as morals, and analysis of the human life and social machine. As individuals, we would all do well to learn from the practices of the Buddha, or the enlightened administration of Ashoka the Great, a Buddhist-inspired ancient king.

Nonetheless, the movie is so original and profound because the creative spirit and optimism, epitomized by Dr. Jessup, we have rarely since seen. Very few movies produced since, I feel, have explored such creative territories, and the same might be true in some ways for science. John C. Lilly really represented this creative spirit, in his groundbreaking research with Dolphins, and, for a brief period of time, LSD in isolation tanks. The brief renaissance of dolphin research, to me, seemed to be a tragic metaphor for the failure of our society and academic communities to truly attain and translate an understanding of the creative powers of each individual, into a more humane and fulfilling societal structure (see Karen C. Pryor's 1969 experiment, "The Creative Porpoise: Training for Novel Behavior."

Especially since society at large is ignorant of the therapeutic and progressive potential of psychedelics, those individuals of the past generation and present--especially in positions of authority--possessing psychedelic experience, are all the more obligated towards doing a better job. The so-called veterans would do well to learn from the examples of Richard Alpert and John C. Lilly, and at least from the enthusiasm and ultimate humanity of Dr. Jessup's character in this movie. Hell, how many of you LSD users out there ever gave a moments thought to the countless individuals whose lives were nightmarishly ended in the last apocalypse of the Second World War? aka The Holocaust? much less the genocidal, psychedelic nightmares that have continued to plague human society since? After all, LSD was synthesized in Central Europe at the dawn of the Second World War, at the very time the forces of death were in motion...

The failure of you old-timers to translate psychedelic knowledge into progress is not only pathetic, but your stubbornly held opinions about the futility of psychedelic experience is narrow-minded, completely selfish and utterly irresponsible. You were given the visionary blessing of psychedelic priviledge and failed to make any use of it, or even consider the possibility that there are those out there who would do anything to have the slightest bit of foresight to save them from doom.』

(Solitary Man)
『William Hurt makes a memorable film debut as research scientist Eddie Jessup in this Ken Russell masterpiece. Jessup works with schizophrenics and is constantly amazed by their alleged religious experiences during hypnosis. Hoping to gain first hand experience, Jessup starts experimenting with an isolation tank housed in the basement of a hospital. Closely monitored by his friend and assistant (Bob Balaban) Jessup goes back in time and relives painful memories such as the death of his father and has his own religious experiences. Eddie meets a fellow Ph.D named Emily (Blair Brown) at a party and the two hit it off. Both are intense and inquisitive and they eventually marry and start a family. However, Jessup wants to take his experiments further so he leaves Emily and their two kids so that he can travel to Mexico and take part in a shaman's ceremony. Jessup is given some powerful and unidentified drugs in liquid form and his hallucinations become more dangerous and possibly deadly. When he returns stateside, with the still unidentified drug, he combines his new find with the isolation tank and things turn into a living nightmare for Jessup and those around him. Without revealing any of the horrors that follow, I'll only say that Emily has begun studying primates in their natural habitat and she may not have to go far to study her subjects. Hurt is hypnotic as Jessup making Eddie a dreamer who is determined at all costs to literally go deeper into himself and find out all about man and himself in the process. Brown is quite attractive and is just as intense as Hurt. She does a good job of capturing the pain and fear of a woman who loves her husband but is forced to watch him succumb to his demons and then worry about what he's capable of doing next. The film has amazing visuals, particularly religious imagery. These scenes are both beautiful and frightening at the same time. A well made thriller from Russell based on Paddy Chayefsky's novel. Chayefsky wrote the screenplay, but since he was displeased with Russell's handling of his material he demanded to be credited as Sidney Aaron, his pen name.』

『A very interesting movie. One you really need to pay attention to.

Rent one, and if you like it, I recomend you buy it for you video library.』

(Mind-altering!)
『When I was a kid I loved reading the bizarre books by Carlos Casteneda. This movie was actually kind of close to some of Carlos's experiences. One of my stranger favorites.』

(Great Imagery)
『This movie is one of my favorite as far as the imagery is concerned. The hallucination scenes were way ahead of there time and the whole thing looks and sounds fantastic on my 47" TV.』
『Hurt plays a scientist obsessed with discovering the realities of other states of consciousness.
Genre:Feature Film-Drama
Rating:R
Release Date:1-JUN-2004
Media Type:DVD』

『It's easy to understand why the late, great screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky removed his name from the credits ofAltered Statesand substituted the pseudonym Sidney Aaron. After all, Chayefsky was a revered dramatist whose original source novel was intended as a serious exploration of altered consciousness, inspired by the immersion-tank experiments of Dr. John Lilly in the 1970s. In the hands of maverick director Ken Russell, however,Altered Statesbecame a full-on sensory assault, using symbolic imagery and mind- blowing special effects to depict one man's physical and hallucinatory journey through the entire history of human evolution. It's a brazenly silly film redeemed by its intellectual ambition--a dazzling extravaganza that's in love with science and scientists, and eagerly willing to dive off the precipice of rationality to explore uncharted regions of mind, body, and spirit. William Hurt made his bold film debut as the psycho-physiologist who plays guinea pig to his own experiments; Blair Brown plays his equally brilliant wife, whose devotion is just strong enough to bring him back from the most altered state imaginable. From the eternal channels of sense memory to the restorative power of a loving embrace, this movie rocks you to the birth of the universe and back again. And while it's clearly not the story that Chayefsky wanted on the screen, the directorial audacity of Ken Russell makes it one heck of a memorable trip.--Jeff Shannon

(Eraserhead, Extremely Weird, but Fun...)
『Although Eraserhead is a very slow movie, mostly quiet (there is dialogue, but not as much as a typical movie), and in black&white, the movie itself is extremely weird, which to me, translates as fun.

Now, for normal movie viewers, this movie would be a long, pointless bore. I showed this movie to some friends and I was banned from picking a movie to watch ever again.

But I find the movie to be great. I still have yet to figure out the plot line, but the basic overall premise is:

Henry, while on vacation from being a printer, is invited to his (ex girlfriends, one night stand? Not sure) dinner with her family. Finds out she has had a baby (well, they are not sure it is a baby) that was extremely premature. They move in together, she goes back home after being frustrated with the mutant babies cries.
Henry has an affair with his next door neighbor, and she goes on to turn out to be a whore when she comes home with another man.
Eventually, Henry cuts the babies wrappings, and turns out that the baby's wrappings were holding in its organs.

That is the basic premise, but full of weird and odd occurences, such as: A singing deformed lady who lives in Henry's radiator, stomping mutant sperms/fetuses, Henry's head falling off and being picked up by a kid who takes it to an eraser making factory, and plenty of screen time for the crying mutant baby.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who wishes to experience an extremely odd film. Anyone who is looking for a regular good movie would probably be bored, or shocked by this movie.』

(Lynch Embraces rare role of film-maker/poet in the manner of Cocteau)
『Most have felt the surrealistic sensibility of this film. Yet, wasn't it that way with Cocteau? And, wasn't Cocteau who named a film about a painter (and himself and art in general) 'The Blood of a Poet.' So why do I say poet-filmaker? Well, in a broad sense we could say that all film is literature, but most film deals heavily with the development of plot (narrative). And what can a poet throw out? This very thing for the purposes of pursuing the freest figurations and self-expressions. Of course, when events are placed in a sequence, we can always call the cohesive (enough anyway) flow of 'events' plot. Yet, when, whether or not the 'events' have taken place on the same universe (as the prefix 'uni' implies that the various states cohere in some way and operate under the same fundamental laws) what we have is something other than narrative in a film operating as the cohesive thread. There is no getting to the bottom of this film. If an artist could 'say' or show something without doing the art, art would never be created. Anyone that has studied Shakespeare understands that ambiguity is one of the most powerful means of evoking meaning. It is the spectator who will have to untie these intricate knots. The ambiguity is then, an invitation. Perhaps the most ambiguous film yet produced is a grand triumph for the fans by virtue rather than in spite of its absolute resistance to claims of finding resolution&closure. Yet there are enough lurid parallels to invoke the spirit of an initiated viewer's 'visionary reading.' So? We provide the thread, but without the medium we wouldn't want to. I've been out on my porch thinking, 'I'm on to this Eraserhead thing now.' Then I get curious and turn on the movie only to find that my abstractions are once again blown away by the particular forms, sounds, imagery, language, in short, everything that Lynch has at his disposal (he uses it all well and considers it carefully. Man, aren't those Fats Waller organ pieces perfect!). And I think that present film-makers would do well to learn from Lynch and Cocteau as well. Let's face it: film can appeal to our senses and sensibilities in so many ways that we can be moderately 'entertained' by unambitious trash. But, as for making an art of it, the only filmmaker I can think of that consistently produced movies of this caliber is Fritz Lang. And he new well how to use image--if not surreal, certainly not ordinary. 'Video' in Latin means 'I see.' And for today's film-makers, this mostly means very mundane things. The vast majority of films being produced are hardly worth calling mediocre because it is actually disgusting that billions of dollars are being spent on them (to make and to view). Alas, people even like them. The 'video' that is 'I see with my intellect' and will reveal with imagery more akin to the the mind's eye is a rare thing to pull off. It's hard enough to find a movie with good acting and a decent plot that is not so hackneyed that I want to vomit. Though I earlier compared Cocteau to Lynch, I think Lynch has far exceeded Cocteau. As for Lynch's other films, the one most akin to this by virtue of its highly 'poetic' revelation is Inland Empire. I highly recommend it and believe that Lynch was very brave for creating a film that he knew would very likely displease even many of his fans. I recommend giving I. E. a chance. It can be painful at first, but I've learned when to watch it (it's definitely not every night, and it's far from pleasant). Everything Lynch has done (with the exception of Dune) is worth owning and watching several times a year for me. Lynch digs pretty deep into thematic explorations that sometimes span several projects, and I don't think after Blue Velvet the sadistic man ever really left his mind. I mention this because the spirit behind Eraserhead was growing from '70 (and probably before). A great treasure is the release of The Short Films of David Lynch. Whereas with Twin peaks you can see strong parallels with Blue Velvet, there's not much for Eraserhead. But the Grandmother and the Alphabet, though short, place this film in a slightly larger context.

David Lynch's Inland Empire (Limited Edition Two-Disc Set)
The Short Films of David Lynch』

(Wow, try wrapping your mind around this!!!)
『For those of you who haven't seen this movie and you dig surreal...the buck stops here. Watching Eraserhead is like being fed LSD and then inserted into someone else's nightmare. This film is truly head and shoulders above anything else in the cult/surreal/whatever genre. David Lynch is definitely the "Grand Poobah" of movies that will trip you out.』

(Unsettling Masterpiece!)
『After reading so much about this film, I finally got the chance to see it... what an experience!!! I saw this at midnight, with my laptop and wearing headphones. I was freaked out the whole time but loving every minute of it. It's a hypnotic, unsettling, disturbing, brilliant.... there's nothing like it.

Caution, this is not for everyone. 75% of my friends wouldn't like it for the fact that you really have to love being challenged into interpreting a movie. If you're looking for something like The Ring or House on Haunted Hill, this is NOT for you.

If you haven't seen it, please do so. I also recommend Begotten... not as weird as Eraserhead but equally an unforgettable experience.』

(Packaging)
『The product did not ship well. There was no additional packaging to protect the disk except a tight fitting box and the cover was broken and the disk was scratched.』
『Is it a nightmare or an actual view of a post-apocalyptic world? Set in an industrial town in which giant machines are constantly working, spewing smoke, and making noise that is inescapable, Henry Spencer lives in a building that, like all the others, appears to be abandoned. The lights flicker on and off, he has bowls of water in his dresser drawers, and for his only diversion he watches and listens to the Lady in the Radiator sing about finding happiness in heaven. Henry has a girlfriend, Mary X, who has frequent spastic fits. Mary gives birth to Henry's child, a frightening looking mutant, which leads to the injection of all sorts of sexual imagery into the depressive and chaotic mix.』
『This is where is the Lynchian nightmare began. Though he may have redefined surrealistic cinema in the 1980s and forever altered the face of television in the 90s, for many hardcore fans it is this infamous feature film debut that is David Lynch's crowning achievement. Many words have been used to describeEraserhead(weird, bizarre, frustrating, enlightening, significant, unwatchable, meaningless, and momentous), but there is no denying it is completely unforgettable. As a surreal work of art,Eraserheadeasily holds it own next to the works as Buñuel, Cocteau, and Dali. And like many surrealistic works, there is no clear answer on whatEraserhead"means." But, if you are trying to find a simple, linear, plot inEraserhead, you are clearly missing the point. ForEraserheadis not simply a movie to view, but a true cinematic experience, like jumping into someone's nightmare and seeing it from their perspective. Whether you see it as a meditation on the terror of being a new parent, the suffocating feeling of living in an increasingly vapid, industrial wasteland, or a nightmare about the fear of loneliness, the film easily holds up to multiple viewings. And since this film is a dark visual ride and a supreme aural achievement, this long awaited, new transfer is an absolute blessing for David Lynch fans who will finally get to see, hear and experienceEraserheadclearly on DVD. Bizarre experiment? Surrealistic nightmare? Or a meaningless cult film? You be the judge.--Rob Bracco
