(Mummy Movies, Nuff Said!)
『I don't know about you, but I LOVE the Mummy movies. If you haven't seen them, you really need to check them out. Nuff said.』

(Mummy Collector's Set)
『The product is just what I wanted. Although the dvd's were in shrink wrap, the cover box looked used. Overall I'm pleased because I had no plan to keep the covering.』

(Great collection...)
『If you liked the original movie releases, add these to your library. Why pay for Blu-Ray when your Blu-Ray player "upconverts" everything to 1080P anyway? Unless you really need the 'special features'...』

(Mummy Collection)
『Disc's were nice w/ no scratches :) delivery was fast, Movies are great. Thank You』

(An Excellent Set If You Can Get Your Hands On It)
『Brendan Fraser heads up the cast of two of the three films in "The Mummy Collector's Set." It's a nice compilation of the first two "Mummy" flicks and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's vehicle, "The Scorpion King." Odds are that if you've watched these films and enjoyed them, this is a great boxed set for you to pick up. A newer set was released this year, which includes the first two "Mummy" films and the latest installment of the series, "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." "The Scorpion King" is not included in that set, but can be purchased on its own (as can all four of these films).

The first two films are similar, with the Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) being raised from the dead and hoping to bring back is lost love in the first film (and unleashing plagues on the world) and his lost love attempting to bring him back (as well as the Scorpion King) to take over the world. In their way in both films is Rick O'Connell (Fraser), Evelyn and Jonathan (Rachel Weisz, John Hannah) and Ardeth Bay (the underused Oded Fehr).

The third film, "The Scorpion King," is a pure action/popcorn flick littered with comedy in the same vein as "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." Dwayne Johnson and Michael Clarke Duncan lead this film that is something of a prequel to the other films. You do not need to watch this film in order to understand anything going on in the other two and vice versa. This film stands apart as its own entity.

Special features range from outtakes and deleted scenes to a couple of brief documentaries on Egyptology. There are also a couple of music videos and a look at the "real" Scorpion King.

If you're in the mood for big action, big effects and big bad guys, pick up "The Mummy Collector's Set." I also recommend "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." The only shortfall of that film is the fact that Weisz did not reprise her role in it.』

The Mummy
If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version ofThe Mummyis spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.

The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want good old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun,The Mummyranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999.--Jenny Brown

The Mummy Returns
Proving that bigger is rarely better,The Mummy Returnsserves up so much action and so many computer-generated effects that it quickly grows exhausting. In his zeal to establish a lucrative franchise, writer-director Stephen Sommers dispenses with such trivial matters as character development and plot logic, and charges headlong into an almost random buffet of minimum story and maximum mayhem, beginning with a prologue establishing the ominous fate of the Scorpion King (played by World Wrestling Federation star the Rock, in a cameo teaser for his later starring role in--you guessed it--The Scorpion King). Dormant for 5,000 years, under control of the Egyptian god Anubis, the Scorpion King will rise again in 1933, which is where we findThe Mummy's returning heroes Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, now married and scouring Egyptian ruins with their 8-year-old son, Alex (Freddie Boath).

John Hannah (as Weisz's brother) and Oded Fehr (as mystical warrior Ardeth Bay) also return fromThe Mummy, and trouble begins when Alex dons the Scorpion King's ancient bracelet, coveted by the evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who's been revived by... oh, but does any of this matter? With a plot so disposable that it's impossible to care about anything that happens,The Mummy Returnsis best enjoyed as an intermittently amusing and physically impressive monument of Hollywood machinery, with gorgeous sets that scream for a better showcase, and digital trickery that tops its predecessor in ambition, if not in payoff. By the time our heroes encounter a hoard of ravenous pygmy mummies, you'll probably enjoy this movie in spite of itself.--Jeff Shannon

The Scorpion King
There's nothing original inThe Scorpion King, but this derivative action franchise gets off to a rousing start by cleverly stealing from a lot of better movies. Capitalizing on his brief cameo inThe Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. World Wrestling Federation star the Rock) stars as Mathayus, an Akkadian assassin in the age preceding Egyptian pharaohs, who vows to avenge his brother's murder by an undefeated warlord (Steven Brand) prophesied to become the desert-ruling Scorpion King. Their battle for supremacy comprises most of the film's brisk 95-minute running time, punctuated by comic relief from Mathayus's obligatory sidekick (Grant Heslov), romance with a beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu), and alliance with a massive Nubian (Michael Clarke Duncan) on the eve of their climactic showdown. There's no rhyme or reason to the film's depiction of ancient civilization (the costuming is particularly ludicrous), but the Rock demonstrates adequate action-star potential, and director Chuck Russell (The Mask) wraps it all in a slick, professional package.--Jeff Shannon

『If its a well made, and truly disturbing move you desire, it would be hard to do better than Dead Ringers.』

(Dead Ringers)
『This one sounded really interesting but the plot develops really slowly so I had already lost interest by the time it started to get interesting.』

(Profound examination of lost sanity, the decline of brilliance unto madness.)
『Like many other known masters of horror like Tobe Hooper or George Romero, David Cronemberg is one of the most renowned and prominent directors working today in the industry. Only few talented filmakers sprang into public consciousness with such audacity and intelligence, from a series of low budget surprising shockers back in the mid 70's , untill today's acclaimed classic masterpieces of all times in modern horror, with the unmistakable mark of a true author, a gifted brilliant talent that explored with authentic passion, the limits and boundaries of hallucination, grotesque, and surrealistic carnal madness.

The difference between Cronemberg and other repected colleagues worth mention, is that he never got caged in the same level of scanning of the genre, he's a dark pioneer, a visionary of the physical and emotional human alterations, showed in both style and aesthetics so gruesome and disturbing, they became the language, the vocabulary of his frosty architecture of fear. He evolved, refusing to stick to a safe formula, exploring with anxiety his great concern throught his always tormented characters: The profound examination of the mind and the descent of the human psyche unto lunacy, along with the dissection and mutation of the flesh, with all the pain, anger and frustration implied, inflicted upon a human soul.

In this horrific drama, Jeremy Irons, i a career performance, plays two twin brothers, Beverly and Elliot Mantle, renowned gynecologist who operate in an exclusive clinic and share a great reputation of brilliant innovators in the field. They also share more intimate aspects like sexual complicity, as the more confident Elliot seduces women and then allows his more shy and introvert brother Beverly to reap the benefits. It all goes down when Beverly falls in love with careless drug addict actress Claire Niveau (Genevieve Bujold), a new patient with a bizarre gynecological deformity, fascinating the unprevented twin and inducing him to a dangerous addiction to drugs and alcohol along with the separation from Elliot. However, Elliot senses his brother's decline to paranoia and tries to save him, only to fall victim of the same urges. What continues can be described as a surrealist downward spiral of eccentric, raw, and painfuly insane circumstances and consequences, surrounded by a creepy cold atmosphere.

Unlike his previous masterpieces like the astonishing "The Fly", the classic mind-bending visual shocker "Videodrome", or even his first major effort that catapulted him to a cult-following status "Scanners", all outstanding and incredible classics, this movie was the true Cronemberg consecration in his filmaking carrer, he was consolidated as a director, master filmaker and unique author, cementing his path in the industry as an amazing and original creator. All those strong achievements, without the abuse of the trademark gore imagery that shocked audiences worlwide and defined his atrocious and raw portraits of macabre. Not leaving the usual mind-flesh connection still in its glory, with this critically aclaimed masterpiece "Dead Ringers", David Cronemberg proved his value as an artist, leaving the forbidden pleasures and desecrations of the flesh aside, with a new devotion for the obscure corners of the human mind, a real descent to insanity, and the best proof ever filmed that the grisly and sinister special effects were only serving a higher purpose, all the way in his prolific career.

The master of horror-surrealism dominated the sugestion as a form of mind-disturbance, in this almost isolated experience in his filmography, before he retaked the gore and shocking visuals imagery in the diurnal nightmare known as "The Naked Lunch". However, this masterpiece remains as a true portrayal of collapse in a frighteningly believable fashion, and obscure drama about obsession and emotional defects in a disquieting clinical tone, with all the bizarre qualities that turned Cronemberg in a master filmaker, side to side with David Lynch in the description of disturbing, deformed, atmospheric and uncomfortable worlds within human behaviour.

(Smart horror for the thinking person to obsess upon)
『This is one of the most disturbing films I have seen and I recently watched it again after 10 years and found it is just as disturbing now as 10 years ago.

The story is very hard to describe because much of the action is actually mental deterioration of Beverly and Elliot Mantle, twin gynecologists. These men are brilliant and whereas one conducts the clinical research and writes the journal publications, the other markets their work and is the public face of their accomplishments. Beverly sees patients and conducts surgery while Elliot deals with hospital and departmental power struggles. Beverly is more studious, withdrawn, shy; while Elliot is more daring, verbal, outgoing, and assertive. They have developed a pattern whereby Elliot will seduce women and as he tires of her he will hand her off to Beverly who steps in and acts like Elliot.

This pattern breaks down when Beverly diagnoses a famous actress, Claire Niveau, played by Genevieve Bujold, as having three cervixes and as infertile. Elliot beds here first and then Beverly but as a master of emotion and acting, she quickly figures out the scam once she learns they are twins. Claire starts Beverly on a downward projection in that he becomes emotionally attached to her and this creates a distance between he and Elliot. She is also a drug addict and he begins taking all the uppers, downers, all-arounders that she doles out to him until he takes the lead and puts her to shame with the amount of drugs he eats.

As Beverly deteriorates, Elliot tries to keep him sane. Yet as Beverly sobers up, Elliot oddly enough becomes completely out of control and addicted, as if Beverly was actually passing off his addiction to Elliot. As these two personalities dissolve into schizophrenia, addiction, and eventually suicide and murder, the viewer better hold on for a wild ride. Beverly becomes totally out of control during surgery and during gynecological examinations in some frightful scenes. A classic scene is where he has tied off his arm and injected heroin sitting at his office desk and his secretary comes in and calmly resigns saying that she can't take the chaos any more while Beverly is too intoxicated to care.

Jeremy Irons displays absolutely a phenomenal job of acting in this film. This is an outstanding performance, worthy of high praise. He must not only play two characters but also play those same characters as they fall apart and deteriorate. Genevieve Bujold is also superb and convincing.

Many sub-themes bubble about in this film, including exploring the similarity between emotional and chemical dependency. Creepy but challenging, unnerving yet thoughtful, this is a thinking person's horror show.

(Survival by death)
『Cronenberg is the most surprising and shocking film director I know but he always deals with situations that are out of the ordinary and he pushes them to their extreme end or even beyond. In this film he explores the relation between two real twins who have perfectly identical routes in life to the point of becoming schizophrenic and wanting to get rid of the second half of their individual personality, which is the personality of the other. They become obsessed with separating the Siamese twins they are in a way and yet are not. This derangement develops all by itself and they discover that they cannot survive separately and as soon as one does something that the other does not do both of them are disturbed to the point of having to become morbid, death-obsessed, death-seeking, death-hungry and death-thirsty. Death becomes what they physiologically need, each one of them, and both of them, to survive by compensating the difference that has appeared in their relation. All that sounds crazy and is in fact just extremely natural, natural to the extreme. The death instinct, the other side of the libido, takes over when the slightest difference appears between them and is interpreted, unconsciously, subconsciously and even consciously, as a treason of their libido, or libidos, of their libidinous survival instinct. Their survival instinct calls their death instinct up to regulate the disruption and what has to happen happens: one kills the agreeing other and that one let himself die on the body of the one he has killed, the one who has died first. The supreme irony of that film is that these two identical twins are gynecologists by profession and they are giving birth to babies day after day, till they finally and mutually abort their own lives. Amazing. And what's worst in this picture is that it is realistically possible. Cronenberg here reveals the deep fear we feel in front of identical twins, a real vertigo, in Hitchcock's meaning of the word.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University Paris Dauphine, University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne&University Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines

『Claire Niveau is in love with Beverly. Or does she love Elliot? It's uncertain because brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins sharing the same medical practice, apartment and women - including unsuspecting Claire. In portrayals that won the New York Film Critics Best Actor Award, Jeremy Irons plays twin gynecologists whose emotional dependency collapses into mind games, madness and murder. Genevieve Bujold, the Los Angeles Film Critics Best Supporting Actress choice,? is Claire. And David Cronenberg (The Fly) won Los Angeles Film Critics Best Director honors for melding split-screen techniques, body doubles and Irons? uncanny acting into an eerie, fact-based tale ?unnerving but also enthralling? (Desson Howe, The Washington Post).

DVD Features:Audio Commentary:by Jeremy IronsFeaturette:Behind the Scenes FeaturetteInterviews:Cast/Filmmaker Interviews and FilmographiesOther:Dead Ringers Psychological ProfilerTheatrical Trailer:

『Like many other films by Canadian director David Cronenberg (especiallyCrash),Dead Ringerspresents the cinematic and psychological equivalent of an automobile accident--you dare not look, but you can't turn away. The film marked a directorial breakthrough for Cronenberg, who was able to continue some of the themes explored in his earlier horror films while graduating to a higher, more critically "respectable" level of artistic sophistication. The film is loosely based, amazingly enough, on a true story about twin gynecologists who routinely traded each others' identities, lives and even lovers. Utilizing innovative split-screen technology (years before computer manipulation made such trickery much easier), the film stars Jeremy Irons in flawless dual roles as the identical brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Their ability to instantly switch identities leads them to a shared relationship with a well-known actress (Genevieve Bujold) and, ultimately, a physical and psychological tailspin that sends them both to the brink of madness and death. The scenario suggests that both men are halves of a whole, and that one cannot exist without the other. But when Beverly pursues a kinky, drug-addicted affair with the actress, his more self-controlled brother is helpless to prevent their mutual decline. In this wayDead Ringersbecomes a fascinating and stylistically clinical study of duality, and Cronenberg doesn't shy away from the dark and unpleasant aspects of the story. (One look at the movie's display of bizarre gynecological instruments and you'll know why women find this film particularly--and unforgettably--disturbing.)--Jeff Shannon

(Nicholson is... Nicholson)
『The movie is great fun and quite different from the book which is much blacker. The witches - Sarandon, Cher and Pfeiffer - are terrific but the devil - Nicholson - is a great example of his letting it all out but not going over the top. Best example is the scene in the church.

More than enjoyable and highly recommended.』

『Need someone with demonic dash to portray the Devil? There are only two choices. Old Ned himself. And Jack Nicholson. The Witches of Eastwick to the better actor-and came up with the sleekest, sexiest supernatural comedy/thriller to emerge from this or any other world, earning Nicholson 1987 Best Actor Awards from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. The "witches" are in three modern-day women yearning for Mr. Right in a quaint New England town full of Mr. Uptights. Played glowingly by Cher (Moonstruck), Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo's Oil) and Michelle Pfeiffer (The Age of Innocence), they're lovely enough to tempt even the most jaded netherworld denizen. Soon, wealthy Daryl van Horne (Nicholson) arrives. Is his sudden appearance a coincidence? Or the outcome of the women's unconscious sorcery in this smooth adaptation of John Updyke's novel? Conjure up an evening's entertainment with The Witches of Eastwick. And have a devil of a good time.』
『Jack Nicholson was born to play the devil, and in George Miller's adaptation of John Updike's novel he plays it for all he's worth. As a wolfish womanizer summoned by three bored women in a picturesque New England town, he's sating all of his appetites with a rakish grin. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer play the women who discover their untapped magical powers by accident. The smart and sexy singles, out of place in the conservatism of their village, find happiness, however briefly, in the arms and bed of the libidinous devil, but he's got his own ulterior motives. Miller revels in the sensual display of sex, food, and magic, whipping up a storm of effects that finally get out of hand in an overblown ending. It's a handsome film with strong performances all around, but the mix of anarchic comedy and supernatural horror doesn't always gel and Miller seems to lose the plot in his zeal for cinematic excitement. The performances ultimately keep the film aloft: the hedonistic joy that Nicholson celebrates with every leering gaze and boorish vulgarity is almost enough to make bad form and chauvinism cool.--Sean Axmaker

(Poltergeist II (Five Stars) / Poltergeist III (Three Stars))
『Poltergeist II was deserving of a full five stars while Poltergeist III rated only three in my book. Since we are required to post a single star rating for these DVD packages I selected posting four stars on average. I found II to be as unique and as exciting as the original, with III being a sorry ending for the series. This double feature DVD is a good value for $10.95 or less, available at Amazon.』

(Heather Always In Our Hearts...)
『I have to say that the impact of Heather death in real life made me a deeper fan of this movie and Heather's Work as an actress. Hope God have you in his Glory beautiful...No doubts that first movie it's between my favourites!
The sequel was just as exquisit as the first, improved, tender, unique, most horrifying, a great sucessor for the first one. Carol Anne's gift for purity, her angel, smile and love for her family makes this movie unique.
The creators went far far away with the story showing us why the spirits want Carol Anne and why the house of the Freeling was damned. Great storyline, Taylor and Tangina, great duet.
The 3rd part was too decepointed, they took the most valuable treasure away from Carol Anne, her family. The story get lost in the forgiveness. The cruelty and cold of her aunt and cousin makes a fall down of the basics in the movie. Tangina can't die! She's the only link with Carol Anne background.
Why the Freeling give Carol Anne away from home? Kane played for another actor, all was a fall down of the trilogy. But it's a must....』

(Poltergeist 2, plus a really cool drink coaster!)
『Poltergeist was one tough act to follow, but in 1986 they decided to go for it and make Poltergeist 2: The Other Side. As you could guess, it's not quite in the same league as the orginal, but it is surprisingly good for what it is.

The Freeling family is now residing with Diane's mother in a peaceful little suburban home and recovering from the supernatural phenomena that took place at their home in Cuesta Verde. Life is slowly returning back to normal until grandma's death triggers the spirits once again, this time in the form of the creepy Reverand Kane, the leader of a religious cult that he led to death with his false predictions of the apocolypse. With the help of a Native American medecine man and Tangina Baron, the Freeling's struggle to keep the family together and defeat the spirits.

Poltergeist 2 has a lot of good things going for it, namely the return of the original cast, minus Dominique Dunn of course. A lot of the slightly dysfunctional, but tight knit suburban family feel that made the original so great carries over into this sequel. Will Sampson is also fantastic as Taylor the medicine man, and Julian Beck is amazing in the role of Reverand Kane which he delivers with unparalleled creepiness. Once again, the chemistry of the cast is what makes this stand out.

However Poltergeist 2 differs from the original in that the comedy is largely replaced with a much darker and more sinister mood with a modest increase in the gross out special effects. There are quite a few memorable scenes during the bulk of the movie including zombies, a braces attack, and a mutant tequila worm. Unfortunately all this great build up goes to waste due to the ultra lame ending, where it looks as if they simply told the special effects crew to go crazy. The shorter run time also causes Poltergeist 2 to lack the epic feel that the original had. Overall an above average sequel that's certainly worth a look, just don't expect anything as great as the original. I'd generously give it *** 1/2 stars.

As for Poltergeist 3, it's a movie so bad that the only way they could possibly sell it is to package it along with part two.

Carol Anne now lives with her aunt and uncle in a Chicago high rise, but Kane has somehow returned and is able to cross over into our dimension via mirrors...Or something. Movies such as this often contain a few plot holes that we, the horror audience, simply have to overlook. But it's a rarity when literally nothing about the story can be explained at all, and Poltergeist 3 achieves just that. There's no point in rambling on about it any longer, simply let it be known that the events of this movie don't make a lick of sense whatsoever, nor do they try.

Poltergeist 2 was undoubtedly a few notches lower than the original, but Poltergeist 3 is like a made for television sequel. Heather O' Rourke and Zelda Rubinstein are the only returning cast members this time around, so automatically you can write off any of the great cast interaction of the previous films. It's more or less a assembly of unlikable characters running around a labyrinth or mirrors screaming the name Carol Anne for 90 minutes. A completely unremarkable movie that doubles as one of the worst sequels of all time for any genre. I'd give it * 1/2 stars.

Overall that would bring the average of this set to about 3 stars, but since you're technically getting two movies for for the price of one, it deserves a fourth for value. Poltergeist 2 is definietly worth the price for hardcore fans of the original.』

(2 In 1 Sucks)
『I hate when movie companies put two movies on one cd. I hated the sequel to Poltergeist, but I actually liked the third one. So in order for me to get Poltergeist 3 on dvd, I have to get the movie I didn't like just to see the movie I want. Ugh!

(Poltergeist III is a waste of filmspace)
『Why couldn't they have made the double feature consist of Poltergeist I&II? It seems the only way to get Poltergeist II without having to pay some scalper upwards of $30 is to buy this double feature, then you get Poltergeist III which is a complete waste of film. -kd5-』
『POLTERGEIST 2 POLTERGEIST 3』
『As sequels go,Poltergeist IIhas the advantage of retaining most of the original film's cast (although the absence of the actress Dominique Dunne, a murder victim, is not explained). It's still not enough to turn this dreary outing into a passable horror movie. The terrorized Freeling family has moved from their haunted house, but the bothersome ghosties are not finished with them yet. The lame scares include a sequence built around Craig T. Nelson swallowing a demon worm from a tequila bottle and then regurgitating it. Far more frightening is the wizened face of theater legend Julian Beck, who appears as a foreboding old guy with bad news for the Freelings: "Yer all gonna die!"

Poltergeist IIIrecruits only blond cherub Heather O'Rourke (who died before the film's release) and dwarf psychic Zelda Rubinstein from the first movies. The action has shifted to a Chicago high-rise, where little Carol Anne's otherworldly gift is being studied (Tom Skerritt and Nancy Allen play the uncle and aunt she boards with). Director Gary Sherman tries to get some ideas going with mirror images, but the bargain-basement atmosphere and the limited special effects undercut the movie at every turn.--Robert Horton

(Masterful Blending of Genres)
『I was one of the lucky ones. I caught ALIEN (pardon the pun) when it made its debut in the theaters. I had absolutely no idea what this movie was about--save for its intriguing newspaper ad ("In space, no one can hear you scream."). Suffice it to say I was thoroughly and giddily entertained by this (my first) Ridley Scott offering, a powerful movie that successfully blended sci-fi and horror, and had me squirming and pitching in my seat like a spider on a hot stove. To this day ALIEN still has that effect on me; I still shout out at John Hurt not to take that bite of spaghetti.

ALIEN's premise is so simplistic: an interstellar space crew responds to what they believe is a distress signal; instead, they become exposed to evil incarnate, an alien life form that is relentlessly and maniacally and cunningly malevolent. The cast is topnotch, including Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ian Holm (who has his own eye-opening, gruesome scene). Of course, the focal point--and undisputed star of what would become a successful franchise--is Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the stoic, yet unassuming heroine finding herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. In battling--matching wits--with the alien, Ripley not only represents her own unique brand of rugged feminism; she also represents humanity's never-ending instinct to survive, to live and fight for another day.

ALIEN was not only far ahead of its time, it was enough of a vehicle to launch several sequels that were uncharacteristically compelling and good. (Most of them, anyway.) The imagination, the special effects, the action--the raw emotion and terror--make viewing ALIEN an enthusiastic and satisfying celebration of science fiction and horror in extraterrestrial hybrid bliss.

(I'm 42 now, but 12 when I saw this movie...)
『Thirty years ago my dad took me to see this movie. I was only 12 years old. It was my first rated 'R' movie. I didn't sleep right for three days! Looking back on it now, it was an awesome movie.
No other movie since has scared me more than this movie. A true horror film, and one very true to my heart. Simply one of the best scare movies ever made. Period.
And might I remind you that this movie came out just a couple years after Star Wars and the special effects were just as good or better.
I still shiver at the thought of this movie. It was and is the reason for my obsession for sci-fi and horror.』

(Solid sci-fi classic, but not too subtle)
『I can't believe that this came out 30 years ago, so I just had to watch it again and see if I enjoyed it as much as the first time.

There is no doubt that this is a very strong sci-fi monster flick for a number of reasons. The atmospherics, from the cluttered ship to Geiger's eerie designs, are absolutely first rate. Just by looking at it, you get a feeling for the story, a mixture of fear and fascination that all good sci-fi horror should evoke. Then there are the characters, all superlatively acted by relative unknowns, including the star-making performance by Weaver. There are very few sci-fi films that have such fully believable people, so that marks this one in my mind as equal to, say, the Day the Earth Stood Still. Even the ominous corporation, acting through Mother and Ash, is a sinister presence. Finally, there is the alien itself, also a wonderful creation that is utterly weird and completely believable in an immediate emotional sense - you just feel the fear, you don't ever have to try to forget that someone made it up.

As a sci-fi fan, I love the way that the alien became part of my imagination, more as questions than anything one can know. Was it brought onto the first ship as an infection that evolved into a more sophisticated organism as it exchanged DNA with the unlucky voyagers? Or was it some kind a invader, part of some plan that was moving through the universe? How much did the corporation know about it before the crew went and what did they want from it? How intelligent was the alien - just to survive or as a hive mind that was in touch with its cohorts? Even with the subsequent films, you can't really answer these questions, which is a mark of how fertile a product of imagination the film is. It is completely cogent, much like Close Encounters.

On the critical side, I did not enjoy the blood-curdling stuff all that much. It is gross and graphic. Also, I did find a lot of the suspense akin to horror house antics and feel that they could have used the alien for more subtle terror. That means that the first watch is the best, even if it meets the test of multiple watchings.

I have a special connection to this film. WHen I arrived in London fresh out of college, I ran into Tom Skerritt on the street and recognized him form MASH. He told me he had just made the movie, ALIEN, which he said with his eyes wide open in mock fear. I have loved the series ever since.』

(Noone can hear you scream in SPACE!!!)
『That catchy phrase hooked me from the start and my screams COULD be heard. But I'm forgetting to mention that this was long before Beta, VHS, DVD or multi-cinema-plexes. When you actually sat in an enormous and very dark room and saw the movies on a BIG SCREEN. As I've said many times before: Big screen = big scream. And the very best of the "Alien" franchise is a screamer that SHOULD be seen on a big screen. Sigourney Weaver's star turn as Ellen Ripley created a never-dying icon. Though extended through three sequels, "Alien" has been, is and shall always be the best of them all. Ridley Scott's direction is almost perfect and the ensemble performance brilliant. Sets, mood, designs, editing, Giger, music (one of Gerry Goldsmith's best scores) and acting make this a classic screamer that doesn't date. Way to go, you alien thing, you!』
『The terror begins when the crew of a spaceship investigates a transmission from a desolate planet, and discovers a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. One by one, each crew member is slain until only Ripley is left, leading to an explosive conclusion that sets the stage for its stunning sequel, "Aliens."』
『A landmark of science fiction and horror,Alienarrived in 1979 betweenStar WarsandThe Empire Strikes Backas a stylishly malevolent alternative to George Lucas's space fantasy. Partially inspired by 1958'sIt! The Terror from Beyond Space, this instant classic set a tone of its own, offering richly detailed sets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, and a flawless ensemble cast as the crew of the space freighterNostromo, who fall prey to a vicious creature (designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger) that had gestatedinsideone of the ill-fated crew members. In a star-making role, Sigourney Weaver excels as sole survivor Ripley, becoming the screen's most popular heroine in a lucrative movie franchise. To measure the film's success, one need only recall the many images that have been burned into our collective psyche, including the "facehugger," the "chestburster," and Ripley's climactic encounter with the full-grown monster. Impeccably directed by Ridley Scott,Alienis one of the cinema's most unforgettable nightmares.--Jeff Shannon

(Creepy, Tense and Revolting..)
『Rare is it that a horror movie moves me to any real tangible emotion or revulsion so when that does happen I get a rush of excitement. Dead Girl made me a little uneasy and I liked that. The thought of having intimate relations with a captive zombie woman is revolting and twisted and to see it enacted by a group of perverse and morally bankrupt teens was disturbing. Dead Girl features solid acting, and a creepy atmospheric tension as well as a twisted haunting ending that makes this a must own for any horror fan or fan of the macabre.』

『You never forget your first time...

From the producer of HELLRAISER and HEATHERS

Daringly original and genre-busting, Deadgirl is an odyssey into the soul of our alienated youth that takes the conventions of the horror and coming-of-age movies and turns them on their heads.

When high school misfits Rickie and JT decide to ditch school and find themselves lost in the crumbling facility of a nearby abandoned hospital, they come face-to-face with a gruesome discovery: a body of a woman stripped naked, chained to a table and covered in plastic and soon realize she is anything but dead. Quickly the boys find themselves embarking on a twisted yet poignant journey testing the limits of their friendship, and forces both to decide just how far they're willing to stretch their understanding of right and wrong.

From the producer of the seminal "Hellraiser" and the legendary "Heathers", Deadgirl is a new genre classic and a no-holds-barred look at the horror of growing up. Starring Shiloh Fernandez ("Cadillac Records"), Noah Segan ("Brick"), Micheal Bowen ("Kill Bill") and Candice Accola ("Juno").』

(Required Viewing for Vicent Price Movie Buffs.)
『Required Viewing for Vicent Price Movie Buffs. It's a bunch of classical horror movies usually made from wicked Edgar Allen Poe Tales.』

(Disturbingly different)
『Dr. Phibes (played by Vincent Price) is the most strange of villains - physically scarred beyond recognition, he is equally mentally scarred. He dances like Fred Astaire one moment, and then goes off to blithely commit the most shocking of murders. In a world of color and music and surreality, he is as inexorable as death...indeed he is death!

These movies are very hard to describe. At first glance, they appear campy and low-budget to the point of ridiculousness. However, what they actually maintain is a disturbing surreality that turns potential humor into actual horror. Also, Vincent Price puts in a stellar performance, making Phibes seem like the one terrifying reality in all of the brightly-colored surreality.

So, if you want to see a pair of disturbingly different horror movies, movies that are horrifying even when you don't think they should be, then get this DVD set. I highly recommend it. NOTE: Not for children!』

(Cheryls review)
『I have always enjoyed Vincent Price Movies, and getting this set was awesome he is a very good actor in anything he stars in』

(Two excellent films)
『Both Vincent Price films involving Dr. Phibes, first set on avenging his wife's death, and in the follow-up, moving with her (for good) to Egypt, are a rare blend of horror, the supernatural, the exotic and plain black humor. Vincent Price is at his very best, accompanied by a great cast of first-class actors with exceptional work done by all personnel involved. These are still a delight to watch and put to shame all the sad and sicko American attempts at horror/monster movies, serial-type or otherwise. These two movies are among the very best ever. Try them. You will not be disappointed.』
『THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES: Original Theatrical Trailer DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN!:』
『The high baroque period of Vincent Price's career is well represented with this box, which offers seven horror-minded feature films and some supporting extras. If there were ever any doubt that Price was in on the joke, this collection would dispel it: in most of these movies he's having a ball, cheerfully sending up his own image--although the set also boasts perhaps his finest straight performance.

Thanks to the previous likes ofHouse of WaxandThe Fly, Price had his horror cred well established, which is perhaps why he's already winking at the idea in the earliest movie here, 1962'sTales of Terror. The movie certainly has an impeccable horror pedigree: three stories by Edgar Allan Poe, adapted by Richard Matheson, and directed by Roger Corman. Price stars in all three, making a slow start with "Morella," then clicking into gear with Peter Lorre in a broadly comic "The Black Cat," and winding up with great liquefying make-up (and Basil Rathbone) in "The Case of M. Valdemar." The 1963Twice Told Talesborrows Corman's triptych set-up with three Nathaniel Hawthorne stories, but the results are fairly dull. The best of the trio is the first story, in which Price and Sebastian Cabot sip a youth potion, with regrettable results.

Witchfinder General(re-edited and known for years in the U.S. asThe Conqueror Worm) is the gem of the collection, a truly harrowing film for which Price eschewed any hint of camp. He plays a 17th-century witchfinder, and the film pulls no punches in pointing out the sadism of his job (and the way religious paranoia is linked to misogyny). It's the best and final work by the promising director Michael Reeves, who died in 1969 from a drug overdose; he was only 24 when he made this film.

From there, the set skips into Price's 1970s silly season. The Abominable Dr. Phibeswas a surprise hit in 1971, and it's easy to see the appeal: Price goes over the top in his portrayal of a Phantom of the Opera type who exacts revenge by invoking the Old Testament plagues. Joseph Cotten and Terry-Thomas are in the cast.Dr. Phibes Rises Againisn't quite as madly focused--this time the doctor is in Egypt, looking for a way to revive his late wife--but the tongue-in-cheek spirit prevails.

Those films paved the way for a similar but more inspired outing, and a movie Price spoke of as a personal favorite:Theater of Blood, a deliciously wicked thing about a ham actor who murders his critics. Not only does Price have a high old time reciting Shakespeare, he gets to knock off some wonderful victims: Robert Morley, Jack Hawkins, and Price's future wife Coral Browne among them. Diana Rigg is a welcome bonus.Madhouserounds out the disc, an actively bad movie along the same lines; Price plays a horror-movie actor whose personal instability mirrors his film persona. The picture is ham-handed in every way, though it's good to see Peter Cushing toe-to-toe with Price. Also in the set: aDisc of Horrors, with an hour's worth of featurettes on the man.--Robert Horton

(Not many favorites in this pack...)
『Getting straight to it, this is a weak bundle. Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare are the weakest of the series along with part 2 which was Freddy's Revenge. Freddy vs. Jason is a mixed bag. It's interesting seeing these two horror icons duke it out, but that may or may not be your cup of tea. The strongest is New Nightmare which brought Heather Lagenkamp as Nancy back into the franchise and offered a new twist rather than more of the same. I would say buy that one on its own and pass on this quad set. It's nice that they put these packs together for people on a budget and sometimes all or at least 3 of the films are pretty good. But not in this case.』

(5 6, Grab Your Crucifix, 7 8, Gonna Stay Up Late!!!)
『A Nightmare on Elm Street 5- I've read some reviews on this movie, and a lot of people don't like it. I honestly didn't think it was too bad! The night before graduation, Dan and Alice are having sex, then the nightmares begin again. Alice is in the shower, then she's transported to the asylum where Amanda Krueger was raped and where Freddy was born. (Robert Englund does another awesome job as Freddy Krueger!) If Alice can find Amanda in the real world, Freddy will die. Freddy is reborn and instead of haunting Alice's dreams, he haunts her unborn baby's dream, mixing reality and the real world. During her dreams, she sees her son, Jacob as a child, trying to help her stop Freddy. There was one cool part when Freddy is on a skateboard, coming after Alice's friend. A gross part for me was when Freddy is making Greta eat a lot of food at the 'rich-people' party her mom is having. Another friend, Yvonne tries to find Amanda while Alice tries to stop Freddy from haunting her child's dreams. If you love the Freddy series, and teenage pregnancies, you'll love A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD!!!

Freddy's Dead- After trying to kill Alice and her unborn baby, Freddy is back and trying to get in touch with his daughter! His daughter is now an adult and working as a psychiatrist. She tries to help rebellious teens with their problems. When she meets a guy who claims he doesn't know who he is, she takes him to Springwood so he'll remember something. Meanwhile, the teens go to an abandoned house to get away from things. I think it's kinda funny when Freddy is attacking a deaf kid in his dreams, and Freddy is right behind him trying to get his attention. I also like when they show Freddy in the past when he was a kid, then as a teenager, then before the parents burned him alive, and the demon worms pick him to do the thing he is best known for. Can Freddy's daughter put an end to him once and for all? If you love the Freddy series, hopefully, you'll love FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE!!!

Wes Craven's New Nightmare- After The Final Nightmare, Wes Craven is having nightmares again, so he decides to write a new script. Beacuse the Nightmare films have ended, the 'real' Freddy decides to come to our world. Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon are some of Freddy's targets he tries to kill. He tries to get Heather's son, Dylan too. The real Freddy is a lot scarier and more evil than Robert Englund could ever portray! Heather decides to play Nancy one last time and kill Freddy...for good! If you love the Nightmare series, and a movie within a movie, you might like WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE!!!

Freddy Vs. Jason- If you love A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, or both, you'll definitely love Freddy Vs. Jason! Freddy is trying to come back again, but since no one remembers him, he sends Jason Voorhees to Elm Street and kill to get people to remember. When Jason doesn't back down, Freddy gets pissed and have an all-out battle at Camp Crystal Lake. I love the awesome fighting sequences between them. I love all the blood and gore when they slash at each other! I remember seeing this with a friend when it first came out. There were some parts we laughed at, some we thought were cool. If you love slashers fighting, you'll love FREDDY VS. JASON!!!』

(Could have done something new)
『As a whole, I give the entire Nightmare series 5 stars. Well maybe all except Freddy's Dead. But besides that, these 4-film fan packs are great. Inside of leaving reviews for both packs, I'll just list a few problems I have with them:

1. They have the same menus that are found in the Nightmare DVD boxset, and individual DVD releases. They could have at least done something new with the menus for a new release.

2. If your looking for deleted scenes from Freddy Vs. Jason, they aren't on here. It's just your standard widescreen/full screen movie with trailer and commentary.

3. An unrated version of Dream Child on DVD would be nice. I know it's next to impossible to get though cause apparently the film master got ruined and they can't transfer it to DVD. Ahh well...at least their is the trusty old VHS.

Besides these three problems, this set is good for two things. It's a nice addition to anyone's Freddy collection. And it's good for those who like to have Nightmare marathons.』

(Well Done)
『Well done movie. Obviously one that the Catholic church would not approve of. High quality acting, suspenseful, well-done but not overly done special effects.』

(Stigmata Non Grata...)
『When STIGMATA first came out, I avoided it. I figured that it would be another hokey, religious / supernatural mega-dud like END OF DAYS. Years later, I finally watched it, and was pleasantly surprised. Patricia Arquette is both tough and vulnerable as Frankie Paige. She is bewildered by what's happening to her, without losing her modern cynicism. Gabriel Byrne (Gothic, Spider) makes a believable, world-weary Father Kiernan, who goes from skeptic to believer in due course. Jonathan Pryce is subtly eeevil as the pompous Cardinal Houseman. If you like religious horror / thrillers that aren't (overly) dependent on cgi or insulting to your intelligence, then STIGMATA should be a hit... P.S.- I prefer the director's darker, more powerful alternate ending over the "happily ever after" hollywood bilge...』

(SPLIT A PIECE OF WOOD, AND I AM THERE... LIFT UP A STONE, AND YOU WILL FIND ME...)
『I saw this film years ago when it was first released and enjoyed it. I saw it again recently and enjoyed it even more the second time around. I had forgotten that the film was based upon the Gospel according to St. Thomas, a gospel that is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church and is not included in the New Testament. The Gospel according to Thomas is not about the life of Jesus. Rather, it is about the things that Jesus said. There are one hundred and fourteen such sayings that have been translated. One of those sayings is at the heart of this film. "Split a piece of wood, and I am there. Lift up a stone and you will find me."

The film is about an investigative Jesuit priest, a young atheist who suffers from the stigmata, and a conspiracy within the Roman Catholic Church to suppress a certain gospel, as if fears its destruction should that gospel become public. The investigative priest, Father Andrew Kiernan, is played with appropriate gravity by Gabriel Byrne, a serious man with a faith issue, as he is not just a man of the cloth, he is also a scientist with a degree in chemistry. He travels around the world investigating alleged miracles. The young atheist suffering from Stigmata is Frankie, a twenty-three year old hairdresser played with great sincerity by a young and nubile Patricia Arquette. Cardinal Houseman, the politically savvy church official seeking to suppress the perfidy of the Church, is played with zealous determination by Jonathan Pryce.

I loved everything about this film. While there are elements of horror intertwined with its underlying intellectual theme, these two odd bedfellows merely make the film more interesting. I certainly did not find the juxtaposition of these two elements incompatible. The special effects do not overwhelm the film, but, instead, serve to enhance the experience of the viewer in understanding the film's themes and message. The film also boasts a wonderful soundtrack that meshes perfectly with the film and adds to its drama. Moreover, the film boasts stellar performances by its entire cast.

This is a very entertaining film that is well worth having in one's personal film collection. I loved this film!』

『A lost soul has just received the wounds of Christ and a shocking message that will alter history. Stunning performances from Patricia Arquette (True Romance), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) and Jonathan Pryce (Ronin) and a cutting edge score by Billy Corgan of The SmashingPumpkins and Elia Cmiral make Stigmata a visual and visceral feast (Entertainment Today). Frankie Paige (Arquette) has absolutely no faith in God. All of that changes when she suddenly begins to suffer the Stigmatathe living wounds of the crucified Christ. Frankie's miraculous bleeding comes to the attention of the Vatican's top investigator, Father Kiernan (Byrne). But when Cardinal Houseman (Pryce), discovers that Frankie is actually channeling an extraordinary and provocative message that could destroy the Church, he's convinced that she - and the force possessing hermust be forever silenced. Determined to stop this deadly conspiracy, Kiernan risks his faithandhis lifeto save her and the message that will change the destiny of mankind forever!』
『Gabriel Byrne plays Father Kiernan, a young Jesuit priest whose degree in chemistry makes him a sort of priest/detective as he investigates weeping Marys and the like around the world. Meanwhile, Frankie (Patricia Arquette), a rave-generation Pittsburgher, is afflicted with the stigmata--holes that appear in her wrists, resembling the wounds of Christ. The young woman's symptoms filter back to the Vatican and Father Kiernan is assigned to the case. The priest is puzzled by Frankie's atheism; usually the stigmata only appear on the devout (hence the age-old controversy of miracles vs. hysteria). Other manifestations appear on Frankie, and the priest's cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) is brought in, leading to political maneuvering within the Church hierarchy. The film owes a large and obvious debt toThe Exorcist(at one point, Frankie's bed scoots across the room and she levitates into a crucifix position), but to term it anExorcistrip-off would be to shortchangeStigmata. The premise and screenplay are more cerebral than in the l973 film, and the source of the phenomenon is coming from a completely different place.

Unfortunately, amidStigmata's high-octane editing and slick technique, the chills ofThe Exorcistaren't there, giving the movie a sort of identity crisis: horror movie or intellectual thriller? Several elements of the film challenge basic tenets of the Catholic faith, hence the brief furor that erupted at the time of the film's release; if nothing else, the internal workings of the Church are shown in a very unflattering light indeed. Byrne excels as the skeptical priest, as does Arquette as the tortured young woman. All told,Stigmatais a rather uneven effort, but one with a thought-provoking combination of theology and thrills served up in a thoroughly modern, stylish package. Fans of TV'sAlly McBealwill recognize Portia DeRossi in a supporting role.--Jerry Renshaw

(Epic, Artistic, Beuatiful and Disturbing)
『This movie is great, and even greater on blu-ray! It is full of many amazing scenes that are both disturbing and artistically beautiful at the same time. I'm not even a J-Lo fan but she is great in this film, and Vincent D'Onofrio plays an excellent psychopathic serial killer. I will say though, that this movie is not for everyone. If you were to actually travel through the mind of a psycho it would probably be something like this. Some scenes are just plain twisted. If you like this film you should also check out "The Fall", also directed by Tarsem Singh.』

(Visually brilliant, but terrible script, muddled plot, and riddled with cliches)
『I think the amazon editorial review is spot on.

Here's the thing - visually the "dream sequences" (I know technically they're in a coma) are some of the most interesting technical things I've seen on film. It's in the ballpark of Metropolis, and many German films of the silent era. Of color films, Bram Stoker's Dracula (Coppola), What Dreams May Come, several of Tim Burton's big budget films (e.g. Batman Returns) and Natural Born Killers are really the only other color films in the same visual ballpark. I honestly have not the slightest clue how some of the special effects were done. It's obvious many of them aren't CG either. I'm assuming camera.

Unfortunately, while the visuals are nothing short of astounding, the plot is cliche serial killer stuff. It seems like they made the dream sequences and then just decided to do some perfunctory bookending. Because of this, the movie is extremely highly recommended for film students. People interested in dream interpretation might get a kick out of it, too. Everyone else can safely avoid this.

The movie as a whole is boring and to be frank, not very interesting to watch. The characters have no defining characteristics and are the cliche psychologist, cliche detective (complete with chainsmoking, sleeping in the office, etc) and cliche serial killer (who was abused). There is no character development despite two instances where it should have been obvious there could have been some. The plot is muddled and confusing and riddled with Dickensian deus ex machina (the serial killer character has a rare form of schizophrenia, the doctor at a hospital knows about a top secret dream machine, the killer uses a torture machine that works too conveniently for the plot). Also, there's no closure at the end of the movie. There's zero chemistry between Vince Vaughn and J-Lo, too which is a missed opportunity.

If you're really interested in dreams and psychology or just a good movie with them, I'd recommend watching Paprika instead. Similar movie, but vastly better. Or if you want a surreal mystery thriller, rent Blue Velvet.』

(The Cell)
『This is a great film. And it should have took notice when Oscar time came around... It is the story of meetings of minds. only with horror added. One of my favorite movies. That will haunt you mind for some time. By the way part two sucks so dont bother.. A big five stars for this one...』

(The fantasy sequences are worth the price of purchase "...It's not real! It's not real!")
『"The Cell" is a two-fold story; part crime drama and part surreal art film. It tells of a truly twisted murderous piece of work with a growing body count. This is a VERY sick man, physically and mentally. Different from most "Whodunnits," the police catch the criminal fairly early into the story, but he has lapsed into a catatonic state just prior to being taken into custody. There is a victim still missing; she's alive, but sure to die if not found. It becomes a race against time.

Credibility is stretched to the breaking point during the story, as an investigative, experimental method is used to enter someone's mind, and probe their innermost fantasies. Such technology isn't in effect, not yet, anyway, but once you accept this as part of the story, it becomes an incredible viewing experience. The visuals and accompanying soundtrack are among the most vivid and imaginative to date. Filmed almost a decade ago (at this writing), it doesn't look dated in the least, except that it is better than a lot of films that followed it. In the decade that ensued, less and less really good ones have come out. You can discount the story if you like, the cast, and so on, but indisputable, is the film's sensory impact. Despite the ugliness it has in spots, and some terrifying imagery, it has a breathtaking beauty to it. The director set the sky as the limit, and even then, the sky was no limit.

Synchronicity is a major part in the film's last reel, as the surviving victim is found, and the killer's dark side is finally put to rest at the exact same time; water being part of the plight of the abducted victim, and the purging of the schizophrenic's personal demons as well.

Bottom line: "The Cell" is an extreme roller coaster ride for the senses. Watch in a darkened room, when you know you won't be interrupted.

("GREAT!")
『This product came in the time expected and it was in excellent condition. I would highly recommend.』
『A therapist (Jennifer Lopez, Out Of Sight) uses an experimental treatment to enter the mind of a serial killer (Vincent D'Onofrio, Men In Black) to learn his secrets. An FBI agent (Vince Vaughn, Swingers) must rescue her from the killer's nightmare mind』
『Schizoid serial killer Carl Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) has been captured at last, but a neurological seizure has rendered him comatose, and FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughan) has no way to determine the location of Stargher's latest and still-living victim. To probe the secrets contained in Stargher's traumatized psyche, the FBI recruits psychologist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez), who has mastered a new technology that allows her to enter the mind of another person. What she finds in Stargher's head is a theater of the grotesque, which, as envisioned by first-time director Tarsem Singh, is a smorgasbord of the surreal that borrows liberally from the Brothers Quay, Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, Hieronymous Bosch, Salvador Dali, and a surplus of other cannibalized sources.

This provides one of the wildest, weirdest visual feasts ever committed to film, andThe Cellearns a place among such movie mind-trips as2001: A Space Odyssey,Altered States,What Dreams May Come, andUn Chien Andalou. Is this a good thing? Sure, if all you want is freakazoid eye-candy. If you're looking for emotional depth, substantial plot, and artistic coherence,The Cellis sure to disappoint. The pop-psychology pablum of Mark Protosevich's screenplay would be laughable if it weren't given such somber significance, and Singh's exploitative use of sadomasochistic imagery is repugnant (this movie makesSevenlook tame), so you're better off marveling at the nightmare visions that are realized with astonishing potency. The Cellis too shallow to stay in your head for long, but while it's there, it's one hell of a show.--Jeff Shannon
