I recommend this movie for everyone』
(Much Better Than Expected) 『When I first saw "House on Haunted Hill" I have to admit I thought it was really good. Maybe because I had just finished watching the snooze-fest that was "The Haunting" remake that my expectations were pretty low for another ghostie re-tread like "House on Haunted Hill", but I thought that this low-budget William Castle update was scarier and had more chills than the bigger budget big studio flick.
The story is cliched no doubt; a wealthy man (who makes his money by scaring people with amusement park rides) invites a bunch of people to a ginormous old mental hospital which has been abandoned since a mad doctor ran the place in the 1930's. Of course the former doctor was experimenting on patients many of which died horribly. Once everyone gets inside, things really begin to go bump in the night, and unfortunately for them (but lucky for us), the unlucky party goers find themselves trapped inside the monstrous madhouse with no way out.
There is a decent level of gore, and plenty of chills as the ghosts start popping guests off one-by-one. One of the best things about this film is the cast; Famke Janssen before her role in "X-Men" which made all of the nerds come out of the basement and go to the theater, Ali Larter before her role in "Heroes" which made all of the nerds return to the basement to watch TV, Geoffrey Rush slumming between his Oscar win for "Shine" and before becoming a pirate for Disney in "Pirates of the Caribbean" and horror icon Jeffrey Combs also pops in for some fun.
I think one of the reasons the film is so enjoyable is that it wallows in it's B-Movie origins. It's not trying to be a serious film, it achieves what it sets out to do, and that is offer a fun popcorn fueled horror film.』
(huh?) 『I ORDERED THE MOVIE AND THE BOX WAS EMPTY. . .

(Pretty good, Pretty good.) 『the movie was actually really good. its probibally one of the only few horrors that actualy scare me. but the story line plot and evrything was all good. eaven when mr price went in to the saturation chamber. that was personally my favorite scene. but other than that it was a good movie.』
(Great Creepy Ghost Haunted house movie) 『I may have never seen the original with Vincent Price, but the first time I saw this remake in theaters I was in love. The opening credits and most of the scenes with the ghosts seem as though they were shot by the same directors who did some of NIN's and Marilyn Manson's videos...and who is scarier than those guys.
Overall a great suspenseful, creepy, and mildy gory ghosts out for revenge story a true keeper in my DVD collection.
Great perfomances by Chris Kattan and Geoffrey Rush.』 『When an eccentric millionaire offer a group of opposites $1,000,000 to spend the night in a so called "Haunted House" with a murderous past, they figure it is a quick way to get quick money and leave. All of them are sure it is some made up story just to mess with their heads a little and test their courage. But, once they stay in the house they start to think about the mistake they made in coming there when mysterious things start to happen.』 『House on Haunted Hillis one of the new breed of waste-no-time thrill machines, likeDeep Blue Sea, and a particularly effective example at that. The plot is pure contrivance: For a party stunt, a wealthy amusement-park manufacturer (Geoffrey Rush) offers five people a million dollars if they spend the night in a former insane asylum where the patients murdered the sadistic staff. But it turns out the five people who arrive aren't the five he invited--did his wife (Famke Janssen), who hates him, make the switch? From there events unfold with a smart combination of human and supernatural machinations; spooky jolts are dispensed at regular, but not entirely predictable, intervals. The visual effects owe a considerable debt toJacob's Ladder, a much more ambitious movie;House on Haunted Hilljust wants to get under your skin, and succeeds more than you'd expect. Rush is his entertainingly hammy self; Janssen, Taye Diggs, Ali Larter, and Bridgette Wilson are attractive and reasonably straight-faced about it all; and Chris Kattan is genuinely funny as the house's neurotic owner. Some elements of the plot seem to have been lost in the editing process, but it hardly matters. More bothersome is that the scares go flat when computer effects take over at the end--the digital images just aren't as creepy as the more suggestive stuff that came before. But that's just the very end; most of the movie has a lot of momentum. Watch until the end of the credits for a final bit of eeriness.--Bret Fetzer』

The reviews are spot-on, however, I noticed that with all the acolades heaped upon the actors, it must also be remembered that Paul Mantz, one of Hollywood's finest stunt pilots lost his life in the filming of this movie (Phoennix prototype crashed during last scene), as he was trying to land, in scene which showed plane disappearing over the mountains. At the end of the film's credits, a memorial mentions this unfortunate tragedy.』
(Very good -- not the best for repeat viewing.) 『Flight of the Phoenix is a great movie. It tells the story of a plane crash in the middle of the no-where. With only a limited amount of water -- but luckily a large shipment of dates was onboard -- the crew must decide what to do. Stay and wait? Walk toward civlization?
The characters are interesting and the conflict faced by the hero of the film is difficult.
My only complaint is that this film does not have great repeat value. In my opinion it is simply too slow.
Bottom line: Borrow or rent this movie. Buy only if you are really taken by the courageous struggle of the hero!』
(3 stars out of 4) 『The Bottom Line:
An engaging adventure that is better in almost every way than its more modern remake, The Flight of the Phoenix makes the most out of its interesting premise and desert setting; with a cast of top-flight character actors behind the somewhat-annoying Jimmy Stewart, it's a worthy film.』
(The definition of a classic) 『This may not have won any awards, but it is a great story superbly acted by a stellar cast. Infinitely better than the recent trashy remake. The interplay between the characters is finely done and keeps you hooked from start to finish. Best film of 1965 without a doubt and definitely an important addition to anyone's history of cinema collection.』
(computer nerd vs. grizzled old veteran) 『"Flight of the Phoenix" is truly a superior film and is one of my all time favorites. An airplane carrying a cargo of men, mostly oil field types, crashes into the North African desert because of a sudden sand storm that the pilot, Jimmy Stewart, is unable to climb over. Several men are killed in the initial crash and Stewart is a writhing mass of guilt.
The ordeal, however, is by no means over. The crash site is hundreds of miles away from the nearest help and, worse, because the plane tried to detour around the storm, they aren't in any known flight path. The survivors have a cargo of dates and a limited amount of water to live on. Seemingly, there are only two choices...walk out or die.
The dispassionate and calculating Hardy Kruger, who plays a German slide rule nerd [make that a present day computer nerd] has been quietly examining the wreck of the twin engine plane and announces to the incredulous Stewart that he has a plan to fly the enormously damaged plane to safety. Stewart thinks the German has gone off his head but when he learns Kruger is an aircraft designer he reluctantly starts to listen.
Kruger thinks they can disengage the one wing, winch it over the fuselage and attach it to the one good engine, producing a one engined plane without a fuselage. The men will have to ride on the top of the wings. Now Stewart thinks Kruger is really crazy but is convinced to go along with it if, for no other reason, than to give the men hope.
The rest of the story is one of building and unbearable tension. Stewart despises the fact that he is playing second fiddle to a juvenile German who is likely out of his head. Water is stolen, which Hardy admits to because he, unlike the others...all so cold and logical...has been working day and night and requires the extra moisture. Kruger is absolutely right but Stewart hates him for it.
Men are lost to the desert and two others are tortured to death by marauding Arab bandits. Almost worse, Stewart learns that Kruger is, in fact, a model airplane designer, who announces that his greatest design is the "Adler", with a two meter wingspan. Now Stewart really thinks that the German is crazy. Nevertheless, they labor on and ultimately Stewart, who is after all an excellent pilot, flies the German's contrapation to safety.
This is a simply brilliant psychological thriller pitting two opposite views of life against each other. Despite their mutual animosities, the "Old Salt", Stewart, can't survive without the computer nerd and the computer nerd, Kruger, can't survive without the "Old Salt". They have to work together for the survival of everyone. By the way, the Phoenix theme is haunting.
Ron Braithwaite author of novels--"Skull Rack" and "Hummingbird God"--on the Spanish Conquest of Mexico.』 『James Stewart stars as the captain of a plane that has crashed in the desert and must be fixed on the double before all crew members die.』 『Robert Aldrich's tense, 1965 drama about a plane crash in the Sahara is a unique psychological study of men in desperate circumstances. In this somewhat revisionist view of classic heroism, every character within the mixed lot is stretched to his limit, and individual efforts to brave the elements and hostile nomads are duly punished. What is left is collective will and ingenuity. One could call this an allegory for transcending Cold War madness, perhaps, but Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly) makes this such a gritty, immediate experience that you can feel the desert sand in your teeth. Superb performances by James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Krüger, Peter Finch, and the rest.--Tom Keogh』

I forced myself to watch every single one of these boring productions because I was given this as a gift. I couldn't stand it. In most of the stories, nothing happens. There were a couple I could kind of stand to watch, but relatively speaking they were about as good as the worst episodes of a good series. Seriously, don't waste your time and money on this. I don't even want my copy anymore and I doubt anybody else does either so I don't even bother trying to sell it; I'd feel terrible taking somebody's money and giving them this in return. Even if you don't believe me, there is so much else out there to purchase&watch -- why gamble on this?
Some of you may expect me to actually outline why it was boring&why I hated it so much. Well, you're out of luck. It was so boring that attempting to rehash any events from it for the sake of in-depth critique would probably put me into a coma. It's not worth the words. I would much rather make these vague, but accurate, derogatory statements because it is a kind of catharsis for me -- and because I wanted to be a voice of reason in this sea of apologetic reviews.
Seriously, guys, your idea of a bad rating for this is 3 stars? 3 stars means you may not love it..you may not want to marry it...you may not want to have its children...but you at least wouldn't make fun of it the next day with your friends...you kinda liked it. This set is a 1-star at best.』

(King Scores Big with Short Stories for the Screen) 『I have most of Stephen King's major movies so it was a very pleasant surprise to find this gem. The tape with the same title was incredible with all the creepyness and spell binding abilily typical of campfire stories. I was not sure that the suspense and "chills" could be adequately reproduced on the screen. This collection of several short stories--some from the tape and some from his book was no disappointment.
The special effects are high end- easily matching the theater of the mind for those who enjoy King's books and tapes. Major actors are involved and the performances are great. Because it is a collection of short stories you can pick and choose what and when to watch. Although it is hard not to want "just one more." I was messmirized by the segment involving toy soldiers in a bizzare battle against a hitman played by William Hurt. In another story, a couple steps out of a taxi ride and ends up in a new world of increasing horror. I found myself whispering don't go there to the characters on screen. Typical of King, all characters are well developed even the tiny toy soldiers. You can't help but like or hate them. You are quickly engaged. King has no road map for his stories and there are multiple surprises and twists from his seemingly bottomless bag of plots. The mounting terror so typical in Kings stories is never lost on this smaller scale. The segments are short i.e. 30+ min but they have the same impact as a 2 hour movie. As an added bonus there are features with the actors commenting on the roles as well directors on how some of those special effects were done. Great acting, special effects and the always talented writing of Stephen King make this video well worth seeing.』
(Nigthmares&Dreamscpes by Steven King) 『This product contains six short stories that were originally made for TV.... were shown on a cable network as some sort of mini series some time ago. There are numerous cuts in each title to allow for the cable network to play their commercials (although you do not suffer through them - it just moves on the the next part of the story). It is slightly annoying but it does cut down on the playing time. If you like Steven King TV releases this one is about in the middle in terms of the suspense and oddity that we have come to apprcieate. It is not on par with The Stand or Storm of the Century - both great releases. I also prefer Cat's Eye to this as far as short stories go but overall is interesting and fun to watch.』
(My favorite author) 『I have been reading Stephen King for years and years. I had read some of the short stories and wanted to see the movies. I have enjoyed watching these movies.』 『This hair-raising miniseries is comprised of 8 mind-bending stories each featuring an all-star cast and cutting-edge special effects. Each episode is adapted from on of King's short stories and will feature such notable performers as Oscar nominees William H. Macy, William Hurt, Tom Berenger and other favorites as Kim Delaney, Steven Weber, Henry Thomas, Samantha Manthis, Claire Forlani and others. The series will premiere this summer in a 4-week television event on TNT starting July 12, 2006.
DVD Features: Featurette Interviews Production Sketches
』 『Filter aTwilight Zonevibe through Stephen King's brain and you getNightmares&Dreamscapes, an uneven but generally entertaining collection of eight tales that originally (2006) aired on TNT. There is no unifying theme here; although King's short stories provided the source material, there are six directors and seven screenwriters represented, so the episodes offer a variety of looks and styles, with content ranging from monsters to mind games, from pure fantasy to pulp fiction, from genuinely scary to merely unsettling. Still, a certain ineffably "King-ian" sensibility, combining elements of horror, terror, suspense, and whimsy, is always in evidence, as are the popular writer's own preoccupations (with authors who may or not be stand-ins for King himself, rock 'n' roll, and guys who won't ask for directions while their wives complain, inevitably leading them into very nasty situations).
Among the highlights: In "Battleground," a merciless hit man (William Hurt) offs a toy manufacturer and then finds himself attacked in his own apartment by a battalion of indefatigable toy soldiers; directed by Brian Henson, the episode has no dialogue and some terrific effects work. In "Umney's Last Case," William H. Macy is amusing as a crime writer who cruelly toys with his literary alter ego, an arch, fedora-wearing gumshoe (also Macy); it's an actingtour de forceand a story that takes some deft and intriguing turns. "The Road Virus Heads North," with Tom Berenger as a horror novelist who finds himself pursued by… well, by a painting (guess you had to be there), is perhaps the scariest of the lot; it's also the best shot, with a cool jazz soundtrack and a nifty ending. Less successful is "Crouch End," set in a sinister part of London where "thin spots" in the earth lead to creepy new dimensions (nice premise, but it's overwritten and fails to sustain itsTwilight Zoneweirdness), while "You Know They Got a Hell of Band" is only fitfully effective in its depiction of Rock&Roll Heaven, Oregon, a town where Elvis is mayor and the rest of the living dead range from Hendrix and Joplin to Duane Allman and Buddy Holly. The three-disc set's decent if unexceptional special features include "inside looks" at the making of several episodes, actor interviews, and more.--Sam Graham』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (William Castle's Spooky Fun House Galore) 『William Castle's fun, somewhat silly, and innocent spooky classic "House on Haunted Hill" holds up as an enjoyable chiller fifty years after it first dangled a skeleton on a string over the heads of screaming and laughing audience members in theaters. For me, the film still has a creepy fun&Halloween charm that can be enjoyed during the season or whenever you wish to view it.
The movie opens with plenty of moaning and screaming, followed by disembodied heads floating in to introduce the House and its history. The main plot concerns Vincent Price (at his villainous best with some great lines) as millionaire Frederick Loren setting up a haunted Birthday party for his wife at one of the most notoriously dangerous haunted houses around. The house has supposedly claimed several victims. So, Price has invited several guests to a Birthday party for his wife. There's a catch but also a prize; the guests will win a $10,000 dollars for spending the night in the House, a House that has claimed victims...if they survive the night. All arrive to the party in hearses and receive complimentary guns in little black coffins.
From there, after midnight, the doors lock leaving the guests trapped...the mayhem begins. We're witness to crashing chandeliers, and pianos playing as if on their own. Maniacal looking wild haired strangers emerge from pitch darkness and pass by to disappear again. Decapitated heads appear and then vanish, and a ghost from a suicide passes by to spook and taunt the living. It may not be Henry James' "Turn of the Screw" but it's a lot of ghoulish fun. Castle was an 'architect' in making fun houses out of movies.
Amidst the so called mysterious ghostliness, there is also intrigue and suspicion amongst the guests and if Price's character can be trusted, and who could be up to something possibly murderous. And, it's all linked together playing on fears of the unknown. So, settle in this Halloween or really, whenever you like, for tonight, the dead are restless and moving... 』
(We Miss You, Vinnie ;-).) 『A lovely, old film. It's neat to watch these period pics, if only to see how much films have evolved over the decades :-). Vinnie, the shriekers, the traditionally-trained theatrical actress/ghost...all wonderful when in the right mood. I'd never seen the original. I'd bought the remake listed below, years ago. After seeing the original. I now think they did a funky job remaking it for modern audiences. Light weight fare, granted, but entertaining. [...]』

(An influential and essential horror movie, spend a night at this house!) 『Starring the unforgettable Vincent Price, "House on Haunted Hill" is a classic haunted-house story, and at only 75 minutes, is short but sweet. The fact that this was also in black and white makes it even better for the atmosphere of the movie, which itself is already well-done here. Also, I'd like to mention that "House on Haunted Hill" seems to play a pretty huge influence on the slasher films that were to follow. Let's take a look at it: In "House on Haunted Hill": -There are a fairly large group of people, that.... -Are in a certain amount of space together... -Are being picked off one by one... -It's at night...I know that sounds irrelevant and pointless to throw it, but I figured it fits the cliches of most slasher films.
Having both described some of the aspects of the film and showing it's importance in horror movie history, the review is almost done. However, I would like to add that on the DVD I got as a present, there were many extras such as trailers and a DVD play-a-long game. I'm not sure if all versions of the DVD include these bonuses, but if not, look for the DVD with the cover that's painted and features one of the ladies staring at you.
Well, that about wraps up this review. In short, "House on Haunted Hill" is a highly fun and entertaining haunted-house movie that features some great shocking moments, and should be a fun way to spend your rainy night. Here's to the month of Halloween! Thanks for the time, and peace.』
(One of my all time favorites) 『This is one movie that has stood the test of time. I've watched it so many times I almost have every detail memorized. Yes, it does seem hokey by todays standards but for me, there is an certain charm about it that takes me back to a more innocent time. Sadly, out of all the excellent original cast, only Carol Ohmart is still living. Two castmembers died tragically young, Carolyn Craig at age 36 of a gunshot and Richard Long at age 47 of a heart attack. I recently noticed that the Ennis-Brown house is now up for sale, I hope someone buys it and preseves this great, old landmark. This movie is such a classic it's hard to imagine any video collection with out it.』 『Five diverse people are invited to a haunted house party. Vincent Price stars as a deliciously silky millionaire married to a greedy gold digger (Carol Ohmart) who refuses to divorce him. When he turns his wife's idea for a haunted-house party into a contest--$10,000 to whoever will spend the night in "the only truly haunted house in the world"--it seems he may have found an alternative to divorce. Five strangers gather to test their stamina, Price hands each of them delightfully twisted party favors (loaded handguns, delivered in their own tiny coffins), and the spook show begins. Blood drips from the ceiling, zombielike apparitions float through rooms, severed heads and skeletons suddenly appear, and then a guest is found hanging in the stairwell. Full of screams and things that go bump in the night,House on Haunted Hillisn't particularly scary and often makes little sense, but, like a Halloween haunted house, the spectacle of spook-show clichés is quite entertaining, and Price makes a sardonic master of ceremonies. They're like the ones in the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead", if you exclude the smart and speaking part. The victims of these brain-eating maniacs are not your typical teenage idiots; these are punk-rocking outsiders who aren't afraid of messing around in cemeteries, and that's saying a lot. The SFX are very realistic even if it's made in the 80's. There are no lame CGI effects; puppets and honest makeup effects are all around. And the heavy metal/punk rock soundtrack makes it all the more worth watching. It's nice to see a break from the stereotypical flesh eaters for a change.

(The Shadow KNOWS....) 『Very few people realize that The Shadow was the very FIRST Superhero in all of American culture, as he had his own Comic Books long before Superman had ever worn tights. Which would make any film director pause and hesitate with intimidation in undertaking the grave responsibility of delivering this legacy onto film. Russel Mulchahy, the film director, summoned the courage to take on the task anyways and showed real honor by being 100% true to the exact lore of the dark hero. In the comic books, the Shadow was an ultimate force of deadly vindication and poetic justice, but he mysteriously creeped out in the night somehow knowing where the bad guys would show up and even when. This was an allusion to the psychic powers that he had which made him appear supernatural.
Even though the mysterious Shadow was literally death to all evil-doers he would always save the day and the stories would revolve around the spirit of adventure, intrigue, excitement, and esoteric secrets. In this film, it doesn't focus too much on that violence and had focused more on the spirit of adventure that the comics and novels always had yet still being grounded in the grim struggle of his dark roots and his nefarious villains. This film also focuses on the mental aspect of The Shadows characteristic, meaning The Shadow possessed paranormal abilities such as turning invisible, reading minds, and even hypnosis.
However, did The Shadow really turn invisible? Did he really hypnotize you? In truth, The Shadow was originally a radio character, who spawned into novels and finally comic books. What the character had centralized on was the faults of the human mind, where we THINK we are in control but we were actually blinded by our own fears. That 'control' was an illusion to the common mind and was easy to manipulate, as the common mind was weak. So it wasn't so much that The Shadow had meta-abilities where he could actually bend light to become invisible, he simply would stand where you would never look. Meaning he could be standing two inches RIGHT in front of you and because of you're own blindness you would never see him, very much in the same brilliance of the Clark Kent idea. The Shadows motto in the film was "The clouded mind sees nothing". All your weaknesses, all your blindness, and even arrogance, the Shadow KNEW. In fact, the Shadow knew the human animal so well that he could manipulate two parties against each other and they simply never knew that he was pulling their strings in the background. As a master strategist he was similar to the ability of Hitler where the Shadow could manipulate the entire masses with propaganda and even had his own network of people working for him, who were secretly planted all across the globe, a network controlled by one man.
One of the original creators of The Shadow character, Walter B. Gibson, was actually a Mentalist and had traveled in the circles of magicians and their trade. In showbiz magic, things appear impossible but the magician knows how to distract your mind and he knows how the observer thinks. Mentalist, on the other hand, seem able to predict your next move (pick a card, any card) and was fully aware of the assumptions you would automatically make. For these esoteric trades the knowledge of human errors is what spawned The Shadow character by The Shadows creators. In the end of this film there is even a mirror maze, as mirrors are the often use for tricks of light. This was not to say that the Shadow never had any powers, but rather that to access them you would have to go deep in your mind, the 90% of the brain that science declares has been neglected. The Shadow had a deep understanding of his enemies, and of just the human race in general, because he had a deep understanding of himself, and from that self-understanding he could access mental abilities that are supposedly originally natural. On the radio show, this discipline that he learned was constantly alluded to the far East, the land of the orient.
Though they never fully declared it on the radio show, it was still apparent that The Shadow had his esoteric secrets rooting from China and all of it's ancient splendor, including the alleged Shangrila. In this film they fully take that fact and reveal it in a grand exotic way which shows who and where the Shadow came from. Having that in the film was a testimony to the amount of knowledge that the film makers had on the subject and a testimony to their diligent research. Also, for the radio show and the comic books, at the end of the stories The Shadow would speak his classic unforgettable lines "Crime Doesn't pay....The Shadow KNOWS". Which was a very odd thing for him to say; why WOULD he know that crime doesn't pay? The way it had always been said was as is if he had already been there, that he himself was actually once a criminal. "The Shadow KNOWS" was his trademark line as it always meant that he always knew what you were up to, that you could never hide anything from him, "who knows what evil lurks in hearts of men?" was a classic Shadow motto. As much as we could lie; the Shadow KNEW, he always knew. But at the end of the tales it had a totally different tone, where he warned the viewer as if to say that crime is not worth it, "trust me, I KNOW".
Taking this into account the filmmakers realized that The Shadow was so vicious and always knew the "evil that lurked in the hearts of men", BECAUSE he must have been a criminal once before himself. In fact, because he became the ultimate crime-stopper then if he was a former criminal then he must have been the Ultimate Criminal. A criminal of legend and even worthy of Genghis Kahn, Adolf Hitler, and Ivan the Terrible; conquers and despots. In the film they reveal he was a brilliant criminal mastermind but for some reason never went forward to unleash himself fully to the world, strangely holding back and was comfortable staying in his little rule. This conscious in him was locally sensed by a master mentalist/magician, a guru monk who saw his holding back as a sign of hope. The guru who holds great mastery and power becomes the guiding force that transforms one of the most potential great evil-doers into evil's deadliest enemy; as evil knows evil. The Shadow had always appeared like a bad guy fighting for the good guys and the reason he appeared as a "bad guy" was because he WAS a bad guy.
The film takes this extra step very brilliantly, which was a natural step, to add to The Shadows lore. Without forgetting a single beat, the film of course ensures The Shadows most loudest trait; his haunting Laughter. On the radio show his eerie laughter would immediately capture the listeners attention. The criminals in the story could not see him because "the clouded mind sees nothing" but as his laughter echoed all around them they would be in fear for their lives. His sinister laughter was constructed in 3 folds. One was that he knew his prey so well, as he was one of them and also that he knew the human mind so well, he could not help laugh at the foolishness of his preys self denial and false hope. The second fold was a psychological tactic, where his prey would have his guilt stimulated when the invisible laughing man was a memorandum that there is no hiding from truth and his vengeance. The third and final fold was basically having the laughter symbolize that he was far "badder" than the bad guys themselves. The Shadow had haunted the entire underworld.
Almost a decade later other superheroes had started to show up in comic books as well with one particular offspring, known as the Batman. The Batman character was exactly parallel to The Shadow character in a multitude of aspects to long to count in this article. Bill Finger, the co-creator of Batman, admitted that one of the Shadows popular stories was stolen and used for the first Batman comic book. In a fair turn, this film takes a comic scene from the meeting between Batman and the villain Ras Al Ghul and uses it for the scene of the meeting between The Shadow and his formidable villain.
Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was killing bad guys, and before Clint Eastwood was doing the same, and even before Bruce Lee movies with the no nonsense justice smiting the dastardly villain, The Shadow was the very first and original Avenger. To take on such a heavy responsibilyt to transfer upon film was a task successfully and bravely done by the consummate actors and Russel Mulcahy, the films director. This film accomplished the Shadow in almost every way possible, even though violence was not a focus, and is family-friendly enough so that all viewers of any age can see it, exactly like how the radio show was available for all families in the United States of America.』
(a kind of movie) 『bored of the same old grind ? check this and realize what a entertaiment is...』
(The best!) 『This is by far the best adaptation of a comic book / radio show out there. Forget Spiderman, X-men, and Batman. The Shadow is a stylized, classy, fun movie all around with witty dialog, wonderful effects, and an amazing look to it. Russell Mulcahy has outdone himself with this one. I loved the look of the music videos he directed in the 80's for Duran Duran. (look at his profile on Wikipedia - he did more music videos than I ever realized) This movie is a wonderful addition to his resume. The Shadow has great visuals, a fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith, fabulous costumes, and the city has a perfect "Gotham" feel to it. The dialog has many wonderful humorous points to it, and it's one of the few movies where the hero and villian will sit down together to have a polite conversation about exactly how they're going to kill one another, and they do it with the utmost of class. It's a big budget movie that somehow flopped at the box office, but is nevertheless worth a look!』 『THE LEGENDARY CRIMEFIGHTING SUPERHERO IN THIS LAVISH 30S ACTION-ADVENTURE. DONNING HIS SWEEPING BLACK CAPE AND DISGUISE, THE SHADOW TAKES ON HIS MOST DANGEROUS NEMESIS YET IN THIS ENTERTAINING MIXTURE OF AWESOME SPECIAL EFFECTS, HUMOR AND A DOSE OF THE MACABRE THAT HOLDS YOU SPELLBOUND.』 『A mixed bag that received mixed reviews when released in 1994, this lavish film works overtime to honor the spirit and style of the vintage pulp novels and radio shows that madeThe Shadowa household name in the 1930s and '40s. Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability "to cloud men's minds." A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still,The Shadowis true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling.--Jeff Shannon』

The way this plays into the movie seems to play on what happened at the orphage where an army of children sit and play, watching the time tick by as they stare at the bulk of an unexploded bomb. They start to see a ghost, something out of time, once thought to be evil but now possibly telling a story that needs to be heard. The only problem is getting someone to listen, and making them know exactly what happened on that one terrible night. That's the problem with things; a ghost needs to be heard and the world sometiimes hears it, but the things it says are distorted fishbowl sounds and are seen one way when they should be seen differently.
When i watched the movie the first time, I was taken aback by a few things that I saw differently after a second helping. The first thing was the pace, which seemed a trifle slow, adding up minutes without anything happening. The second time I watched it i saw passed my first assumption, however, noticing that the world was not a slow motion clock but was instead a story coming from many angles. Speaking of angles, my second problem had to do with that. Instead of finding peace looking through a valley of plotlines, I found only boredom as i thought too many things were being introduced. I saw through that the second time as well, knowing that I needed all of these things if I were to understand what was going to happen. I guess, much like The Devil's Backbone, I also saw things in the wrong light. I didn't notice the skillful preperation of the actors or the way things were playing out so they could be interpreted a number of ways. I thought i wanted a haunting, got it in a way i didn't like, and that was that. Thank goodness i didn't leave my mindset that way.
If you like the direction in former movies by this figure, then you should know what to expet. Think of the Orphanage or of Pan and think of the way it developed. This is the way things have to be because, unlike a Blade II, it cannot simply whisk through an already established plot. I came to see that and i think people that have seen the movie might see that as well with another viewing, so maybe even they should consider another look at this movie. It has elements that make it a ghost story and not really a horror movie, like a Fog with political threads that run deeper than those even did, and that is interesting. It is being educated about the place and seeing what took place at the same time. I say others might like the way this plays through as well, and know what to expect. Check it out, possibly renting it beforehand, unless you feel confident you will like the thing described. Either way, it does come through with pale fingers and a haunted hand, touching the world in the way a ghost might actually touch.』
(Great Director) 『Guillermo del Toro is a fantastic director who deserves much more praise. People who enjoy beautiful directing and and intriguing plot lines over action sequences will enjoy this movie.』
(just my two cents) 『with all these other fine writers here , i see little reason to write at length about film . you can rent it from so many places (often sent to your home for nearly nothing) . you can read about it in countless publications (genre and not) . you can read about it at many excellent online film sites . i'm not a spanish speaking person (so yes , i had to read this film) . like MR. DEL TORO'S other favorite films of mine ; MIMIC , PAN'S LABRYNTH , BLADE II and now THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE , i feel we're fortunate to have such a unique and wonderful storyteller making adult and intelligent motion pictues . BRAVO . hope you like it too .』
(Buy the orphanage instead) 『I bought this movie for my girlfriend last christmas as we had went to see the orphanage earlier in the year and both really enjoyed it.
Then there was this film...
As the film started I was quite sucked in and interested, expecting a relatively eerie movie with a strong original plot.
How wrong I was!
As i mentioned, this film starts off quite interesting with a young boy being sent to an orphanage for boys. The kids share stories about a kid who used to live there and say he dissapeared and that he's apparently a ghost etc etc...Story goes on to reveal one of the carers is a bad guy etc blah blah blah
It's just not interesting enough to go on really. Some silly pointless story elements and overall, a long winded movie.
When you SEE the ghost-boy, it's just not as horrifying or intense as it is in the orphanage. It reveals too much too soon!
My girlfriend hated it, I pretty much hated it, and we will be trading it into blockbuster very soon I'm sure (and that's once we fish it out of the back of her wardrobe where it now resides!)
If your looking for a way to bore yourself to tears then this would be a pretty good place to start with it.
I gave it two stars because the sets are quite nice...that's its only real redeeming feature.』
(a boring ''horror'' movie) 『but nice to look at. if i went in expecting a well done period piece drama, i might not have went to see this. i wasnt scared, grossed out, intrigued or interested. i am in the minority as many like their ''horror'' movies dripping with low/non existant body counts and fabulous photography. this ''horror'' movie dragged on and on. while mindless gore is just as bad, there is such a thing as a happy middle.
anyway, in case you need one, heres the synopsis as i remember it; back in 1900's theres a boys school or orphanage thats haunted. theres also bad guy/s in search of buried treasure and a ghost. not much action or frights. but if youre a dp in training......!』 『No Description Available. Genre:Foreign Film - Spanish/misc SA Rating:R Release Date:4-APR-2006 Media Type:DVD』 『Seething passions, wandering ghosts, and an unexploded bomb fill this beautifully filmed tale of war and suspense. ThoughThe Devil's Backbonewas advertised as a horror movie in the States, it's really more of a drama that happens to have ghosts in it. During the Spanish Civil War, young Carlos is abandoned at a completely isolated orphanage. The tensions therein have been building for years, exacerbated by the unexploded bomb resting menacingly in the courtyard. Bullies scheme, tempers flare, and a ghost that visits Carlos's bed seems to be the key to it all. The movie is full of excellent performances, especially by Marisa Paredes as the gruff-but-kind headmistress, Eduardo Noriega as the handyman with secrets to keep, and Federico Luppi as the benevolent professor who likes to keep deformed fetuses in jars. A rich, satisfying drama with some good, spooky fun thrown in.--Ali Davis』

("Scary As Hell") 『"Jeepers Creepers" is about two teenagers who come in contact with an evil enitity known as The Creeper. This creature goes on a killing rampage inflicting terror on those who come in contact with him. "Jeepers Creepers" went on to be a huge boxoffice smash making nearly $60,000,000 and spawning a sequel called "Jeppers Creepers 2" that was just as good as the original. Producers have stated that a Part 3 and Part 4 will be made in the very near future with Victor Salva coming aboard again as the writer and director. This 2 disc DVD set features a slew of bonuses including deleted and extended scenes, an alternate opening, director's audio commentary, a featurette called "A Collection Of Mini-Featurettes on the Making of The Film", original trailer, and more. (A true modern horror classic) 『If you ask me this movie should have at least 4 or 5 and a half stars. It has a perfect originality to it that goes along well. It's a horror movie that not only has blood shed in it but also suspense and thriller to it. This is a film of today that I like very much compared to many of the other horror movie's today which are mostly remakes or movies about blood and gore throughout. I like the idea of that The Creeper has to feast every 23 years on human parts in order to keep itself together. The acting I thought was prett descent too and Johnathon Breck does a great job on playing the Creeper. I had fun watching this movie throughout as well as my friends did so for that I give it 5 stars.』 『You can keep your doors locked. You can keep your eyes closed. But still, he'll get what he wants and what he wants is you. Brace yourself for "90 minutes of steadily mounting horror [that] delivers more than its share of honest chills" (The Baltimore Sun). From "the scariest opening sequence of any horror picture in recent memory" (Los Angeles Times) to "one of the gutsiest endingsto a film this year" (Dallas Morning News), Jeepers Creepers is the real deal in terror! On a desolate country highway, two homeward-bound teens (Gina Philips, Living Out Loud and Justin Long, TV's "Ed") are nearly run off the road by a maniac in a beat-up truck and later spot him shoving what appears to be a body down a sewer pipe. But when they stop to investigate, they discover that the grisly reality at the bottom of that pipe is far worse than they could have ever suspected and that they are now the targets of an evil far more unspeakableand unstoppable 'than they could have ever imagined!』 『With confident style and low-budget ingenuity,Jeepers Creepersgets under your skin, provoking spine-tingling horror when college siblings Trish (Gina Philips) and Darry (Justin Long) encounter a flesh-eating demon along a barren rural highway. After a harrowing car chase that sets the movie's nerve-wracking tone, they investigate suspicious activity near an abandoned church, where a corrugated pipe leads to unimaginable horrors. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game against the regenerating demon, which feeds on fear--and selected body parts--according to a psychic (Patricia Belcher) who adds chilling portent to the routine climax in a besieged police station. Writer-director Victor Salva (Powder) emphasizes primal fear over logic, but plot holes are easily forgiven when you're scared out of your socks. For any Carrey's fan good to watch or rent.』
(Twice Shy doesn't apply) 『Pay attention Twilight fans; this is how you do it. Once Bitten is a lighthearted twist on the traditional vampire tale that strays away from the dark side of vampirism, and produces a cute but clever movie good for all ages.
A vampire countess (Lauren Hutton) desperately needs virgin blood in order to stay young and maintain the powers and benefits of being a vampire - one of which is eternal beauty. Lucky for her, Mark Kendall (Jim Carrey) - a somewhat goofy, gangly teenager with raging hormones - is having problems sealing the deal with his somewhat prudish girlfriend. In fairness to her, however, he is trying to do so in the front seat of his ice cream truck. Mark's bond with his girlfriend begins to fall apart when he meets the countess, and she begins to use her seductive powers to gain his trust and extract his blood.
This guilty pleasure from the 80s is funny from beginning to end. The musical montages and fashions from that era are hilarious. Clevon Little as the countess' primary assistant named Sebastian is brilliant in his mannerisms. A classic dance sequence is an early career moment in which Jim Carrey simply exudes talent, and a pretty awesome Michael Jackson impersonation. Finishing with a cute chase through the countess' mansion, Mark is torn between his high school sweetheart and the alluring countess.』
(A Vampire Story that Doesn't Scare) 『The film begins in a modern kitchen. A servant brings a vintage drink to the countess. She has a problem in the late 20th century: how to find a virgin for her special needs. The burgers are cooked with a special sauce. Mark and his buddies visit the Hollywood entertainment district - in an ice cream truck! Too good to be true? "I don't feel good about this." There is a comic misunderstanding with an angry husband. Mark leaves with the Countess. This is not your grandpa's Castle Dracula. No make-up mirror? [What ever happened to the "acid rain problem"?] Mark will be sent home to recover. "Do you remember anything?" Mark now has a taste for uncooked hamburger. Robin heard all.
Mark acts strange at home. Should he see a doctor? Does he have strange dreams? What about his high-school life? There is a funny scene in a laundromat. "She said no." The scene in the clothes store is less funny, but carries the story forward. "Could he be anemic?" The church scene isn't funny. Another strange dream! The Halloween Hop begins, there is a dance to amuse the viewers. [The high point of the film.] "I'm not wearing a costume." Where would a female vampire bite a male to get fresh blood? Can his friends check Mark's thighs? Is this a mistake? Mark and his friends go to the home of the Countess to rescue Robin. But things go terribly wrong, until Robin intervenes. There is a comic chase. Can they escape? A happy ending requires it.
As comic parodies go "Love at First Bite" is still the best, followed by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". This film seems too amateur in style. Watch "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein". 』
(Classic 80's movie!) 『I have loved this movie for years but I could never find it in a local store. My first search attempt on Amazon gave me this and I was SOLD. Plus with all of the "Twilight" craze happening now, I wanted to share this vampire movie with my daughter and niece!』
(Once Bitten) 『One of Jim Carey's early films and one of the funniest films. Just a whole lot of fun. I would rate this a PG13. Otherwise it is the best.』 『Comedy superstar Jim Carrey plays a hot-blooded teen who becomes the reluctant donor to a sultryand extremely thirstynocturnal nymph (Lauren Hutton) in this funny'sexy (Boxoffice) send-up of the horror genre! Mark (Carrey) has just one thing on his mind: going all the way. But whilehis girlfriend keeps telling him he has to wait, he meets a beautiful vampire countess (Hutton) who's ready for action! Mark's just happy to get past second base but after a one-night stand with the sexy seductress, Mark starts behaving more than a little batty and realizes he must find a way to break his lover's fiendish spell...or be prepared to work the graveyard shift forever!』 『This is the movie that was supposed to make Jim Carrey a star--in 1985, no less. Perhaps it's no wonder that it took him until the 1990s (andIn Living Color): this bloodless vampire comedy almost sank his movie career before it began. Carrey plays an innocent L.A. teen, the unlikely object of the affections of slinky Lauren Hutton, a long-lived vampire who needs the blood of a virgin to stay young. So, she woos the unsuspecting, naive young Valley guy. But most of the jokes fall flat, and only when Carrey cuts loose briefly and lets his wild side show do we get a glimpse of the future Ace Ventura.--Marshall Fine』
