Many characters are introduced and what characters they all are. This seemingly benign suburb turns eerie in the most charming fashion. All these characters and their stories come together in the end and I didn't find it hard to follow. Like Murder Party and its beginning montage of Halloween scenes, this one starts with an old infomercial about Halloween and trick or treating. Again, a charming way to begin this journey which turns out to be a love letter to Halloween, its traditions and horror films in general. There are many homage scenes yet this remains so thoroughly original that you find yourself enwrapped in this film that has a Creepshow/Tales From the Crypt feeling throughout, though not quite as campy as either one. Very well scripted with a sprinkle of humor and intelligence and a touch of irony that you don't see all that often in the horror genre. The direction isn't heavy handed in this piece and the look of this film is wonderful. Pumpkins and oranges with colors of fall, fog, white sheets mix and mingle with costumes and masks like a bag of Brachs Autumn Mix. As a child I saw the first alien as a child. This movie, John Carpenters the thing, I saw as a preteen, I remember that being one of the first times being scared silly and really enjoying the experience. It goes down as one of my favorite movies. The Thing and Halloween are two examples of John Carpenter at his prime. This movie is loose remake of the Howard Hawks version, more closely following the the short story, "Who Goes There", by John W. Campbell. It's set in the Antarctic where a crew finds themselves dealing with an extraterrestrial discovery in the ice that bodes ominous consequences for them and maybe the world. The movie works on a variety of levels, from Rob Bottin's special effects that hold up amazingly well in this age of computer generated effects, to the feelings of isolation, and the all too real sense of paranoia that overtakes the crew during the movie. The acting is top notch from Kurt Russell, Keith David and the rest of the ensemble cast. The Blu-Ray transfer makes this movie look and sound better than ever. My only beef and the reason I'm not rating this much higher is the lack of extras on this DVD the only thing. There is a picture in picture feature, but what it basically does is take all the extras in the special edition DVD and set it up where pops up during the movie if you like. Interesting stuff if you hadn't seen it but I would to have seen more in the way of extras. I'm not a fan of double dips but I would gladly make an exception for this movie. Final thoughts, this is undoubtedly one of the best sci-fi and horror movies ever made. If you haven't seen this amazing film, do yourself a favor and check it out when you get the chance, and share it with your friends. The iconic director and writer of the Evil Dead trilogy (Raimi), returns to his beloved roots of the horror genre once again. Don't let its puny PG-13 rating turn you away; the film packs a punch that only true horror fans can take. If that is not enough for you, the DVD offers an alternate extended and unrated director's cut of the film. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown. At first Christine seems to have everything going for her; a great job at the bank; a very sweet and understanding boyfriend; but then things start to go sour. She overhears her boyfriend Clay (Justin Long) on the phone with his mother who is convinced that Christine may not be the right girl for him; regardless of the fact she has yet to meet Christine. Clay tries to defend her but in the end Christine fears that a part of him may wonder if his mother is right. On top of that, she is very interested in a possible promotion at work but discovers she is evidently competing for the position with her new annoying co-worker, Stu (Reggie Lee). There are some very well written scenes that we can all relate to in reference to working with irritating people. She and Stu are both doing their best to look good in front of their boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer) and when Christine agrees to pick him up a sub, Stu throws his order at her as well. He asks for his sandwich a certain way and when she returns with it, in front of Mr. Jacks, he tells her she got it wrong. We know that she didn't and she knows she didn't but Stu makes her look incompetent in front of Mr. Jacks. When Christine tries to defend herself with a mild argument, Stu makes a face and just tells her not to worry about it. It's a small and simple scene, but it was put together very well and leaves you wanting to punch Stu in the face. When Christine asks Mr. Jacks about the promotion, he tells her that he is considering Stu because he can "make the tough decisions." He agrees to keep her in mind though, so she puts forth an effort to do her very best. Then we meet Mrs. Gamush (Lorna Raver); what a hideous old woman indeed. She has disgusting false teeth that she likes to take out of her mouth and play with and absurdly gross fingernails in need of some immediate attention. You wouldn't even recognize her without the outstanding makeup they caked on her face. Mrs. Gamush has defaulted on her mortgage loan twice. She is requesting a third extension. This is a big decision for Christine, so she takes it to Mr. Jacks. He looks it over and simply tells her, "It's a tough decision... your call." Now the burden is on Christine's shoulders. She would hate to do this anyone; let alone this old woman, but she desperately needs that promotion. She does all she can to try and help the old woman come up with a few different ideas to solve the problem, but none of them seem to work. Finally, she just tells her that the extension is out of the question; not a good idea. Mrs. Gamush freaks out on her and causes a huge scene. She is not pleased, to say the least, and tells Christine in a ghastly, evil voice, "You shame me!" before she is escorted from the premises by security. There's an awesome showdown sequence between the two gals, when Christine finds Mrs. Gamush waiting for her in the car garage. You get all of the classic slapstick and action-driven, detailed cinematography we got from Raimi's Spider-Man franchise and his Evil Dead movies. There are some very grotesque things that take place in the garage and throughout other parts of the film that are very appealing to a genuine horror fan; "Carnage Candy", if you will. At one point in their hellacious battle, the old woman places a curse on Christine. Christine manages to escape and things start to get really messed up from there. She takes on some concern when she starts having disturbing visions and visits from hellish beings. She consoles with Clay about it, but she can tell that only pushes them even farther apart. So what ever is she to do? Why, seek spiritual council of course. Christine drags (no pun intended) Clay along to a psychic who informs her that a curse has in fact been placed upon her. She will be tormented by an evil spirit for three days before being drug off to burn in hell for all eternity. I know the premise is a little over the top and if you've seen the film then you know that it's a tad ridiculous at times as well; but it's a fun movie. You laugh a lot, you're creeped out a great deal and you are constantly on the verge of losing your lunch; all essential elements in any great horror film. Watching the film, it looks as though Sam Raimi literally did drag Alison Lohman to hell. He tortures this poor actress relentlessly. While she will no doubt receive zero remorse from Bruce Campbell (who was tormented by Raimi in all of the Evil Dead movies); she will certainly get it from me for what she's gone through here. She has the vilest things thrown on her face, inserted in her mouth, and clinging to her hair. Everyone in the film plays their part well and you enjoy seeing the characters interact with each other. They are all a little off, and I think that's the point and also what makes it work so well; because the movie is out there, to say the least. Raimi's movies are a different breed all together and I really enjoy his twisted sense of humor. What else is great about Sam Raimi's films (in addition to the fact that most of them have the legendary Bruce Campbell in them) is that he never limits himself to a single genre like so many directors do. He has some of the greatest and disgusting horrific comedies like Army of Darkness under his belt; he's made sensational thrillers like A Simple Plan and The Gift; he did the huge blockbuster Spider-Man movies; other action flicks like Dark Man and The Quick and the Dead and he even directed the dramatic baseball film For Love of the Game. This immediately triggered one of the many misaligned brain synapses in my mind and I knew what I had to do. Yes. I had to report to all of you about "Drag Me to Hell". Now, mind you, as you know, your Metamorpho is into enlightenment and the progress of the human race. So taking on this subject matter is most difficult for a loving soul. However, I will because I am selfless and sacrificing my stability to do it - all for YOU. Besides, it may help me towards my personal goal towards being the very last ranked reviewer on Amazon. Who wants to be first when being last is so much more obtainable? That Metamorpho, always using deadly logic to prove his point. I do not profess to be a horror genre expert. No. So let's get that out of the way first. I am sure that a lot of people here have seen many, many horror flicks and are better versed at advising you. Me? The extent of my experience has been "Abbott and Costello Meet the Wolfman". That's better than a novice now, isn't it? No? Nevermind. Let's move on. Forget I mentioned it. :( Anyway, "Drag Me to Hell", I think, is a most enjoyable ride. That is, if you view it with a certain suspension of belief. Which, I am sure most of you have these days with the Government and all. I won't get too involved in the plot, since so many reviews have already spoiled it for you. However, I will tell you that this movie involves the characters of a gypsy woman and a demon. Since I have dealt with both over time, let me assure you that they are no picnic. I had to use ALL my powers to ward them off. But I survived. Barely. But, I will say that. yes, their powers really do exist. So put that Ouija Board away! Do it now! Alison Lohman, who used to be fat, is now a Bank Representative who is being considered for a promotion. There is also a mediocre, brown nosing new hired slug also vying for the position. It is the competitive spirit that gets Alison in a lot of hot water, very gravely I might add. When she refuses a gypsy woman (Lorna Raver- who is excellent in the part) an extension on her loan, is when hell breaks loose. Literally. By the way, if anyone has any idea how false teeth can rot, please write me. Anyway, the action revolves around a curse, how to remove the curse, and how the curse comes to dinner but overstays it's welcome. Sam Raimi (the director and writer) fills the screen with a lot of interesting facets. An example is half dream/half real episodes that infiltrate Alison's world. The lone fly meanders throughout the whole movie. An ominous symbol for sure. But the demon, it seems, can infiltrate her night, as well as day, dreams. Not only that, but I wondered how so much hair got pulled out of Alison's head and she still had no sign of it. Even at the end. I must say, all the actors did their parts well. Justin Long as her love interest was a splendid unhelpful non-entity as well as his parents being the typical upper class snobs. Kudos to Dileep Rao as the spiritual advisor. The open look, the manner, the clothes, all fit together. Besides, see how quick he asked for money upfront? You would never find your Metamorpho doing that. But, it would be a nice gesture to offer me something for my timely advice! Some of the special effects work and are worth watching. Others, though, aren't as good but, who cares? No one cared when Godzilla was a fake balloon. You were too involved in the story line. Admit it! In the long road, the underlying message in all this is worth noting. It's a morality tale in the final analysis. Alison had a decision to make just as we all do in life. Are you going to make a decision that your heart knows is right? Or, are you going to give in to the expectations of others? The choice was hers to make. And, you must accept what you do for there are consequences to everything. This is an interesting tale and worth a look. I'm giving it 3 1/2 stars. Certainly not bottom of the barrel, but not that good that it should be at the top. Now people, I should advise you that your Metamorpho will be in your neighborhood to collect a small (!) donation for his fine reviews (which benefit all of you). I don't think there was a single surprise in the whole movie. Worse, I can only guess at what the "horror" actually was. People miraculously turning up in a location doesn't qualify nor does extensive corpse play. On corpse play it is obvious that only one of the protagonists can actually do any acting and with the very fake "dummy" it was a little like the Brady Movie when the middle sister walks in with a blow up doll. The acting was quite good and the séance scene was the reminiscent of the old Raimi, but even here there was nothing to add to the genre. There are a lot of comments about the humor in the movie, but the only thing I was laughing at was how stupid I was to shell out for this movie. You got your gypsy gargoyles with rotted dentures, your upchucking corpses, your flexible two-way orifices--yes, Raimi's definitely back in the saddle. There's even a story: a sad loan officer (Alison Lohman) turns down the aforementioned denture-wearing gypsy for a loan extension, which leads to an evil curse and a date in hell in three days' time. A séance, an animal sacrifice, and a session in a storm-tossed graveyard will make the 72 hours pass very nervously, thank you, along with assorted scares. Justin Long plays Lohman's upper-class boyfriend, and Raimi fills the rest of the cast with some unusual and unfamiliar types. Along with the giddy horror-comedy that bursts out of the movie every 10 minutes or so, there's also an underlying mood of pity: Lohman's character is something of a hard-luck sad sack, who does enough wrong things to make her seem like a truly abject individual, well outside the heroic model of most multiplex offerings. (Lohman's own little-girl-lost quality adds to this feeling.) But this new deluxe 2-disc edition should prove to be the definitive release. In addition to a spectacular restoration (which is still not quite perfect, but probably the best the film will ever look on home video), there is an exhaustive array of bonus features. Actually, only two of them are new, but when added to the already excellent extras carried over from previous releases, this is simply a must-have for anyone with even a slight interest in the film. But let's take a quick look at the film itself. The Wolf Man has always been my favorite Universal Monster. I think it's the combination of Curt Siodmak's poetic and gothically romantic screenplay, and the Everyman performance of Lon Chaney Jr. as Larry Talbot. Chaney will perhaps forever reside in the shadow of contemporaries like Karloff and Lugosi, but it's difficult to imagine either of those horror superstars bringing the same authenticity to the role of Talbot. Chaney also gets winning support from Claude Rains, Patrick Knowles and Evelyn Ankers (whose well-documented dislike of Chaney also serves as a testament to her acting abilities...the two are charming together on-screen). Maria Ouspenskaya also appears in her signature roles as the gypsy Maleva, while Bela Lugosi has a too-brief but equally-memorable role as her son. As for the bonus features, the two new ones are a brief (10 min.) overview of werewolf movies featuring the likes of John Landis, Rick Baker and several film critics, and a 36-minute documentary on Chaney's career. As a long-time fan of this fan and Lon Chaney Jr., I confess I didn't learn a lot of new facts about the actor; but for the uninitiated, it will no doubt provide some much-needed illumination into the man and his body of work. Also, in case you missed the previous releases, here are the holdover supplements: "Monster By Moonlight" is a well-done look at the film and its sequels, hosted by John Landis. There's a documentary on makeup wizard Jack Pierce. A trailer gallery features previews for several werewolf films, including the new 2010 version of The Wolf Man (by the way, props to Universal for not making this set an extended commercial for the remake, the way some of the bonus materials in The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) did for Stephen Sommer's 2003 bomb Van Helsing (Widescreen Edition)). "Universal Horror" is a terrific feature-length documentary on all of Universal's classic horror output. Lastly, an audio commentary with Tom Weaver provides deeper insight into the film's production. Now it must be said that this long-overdue set would probably not have been released at this time without the 2010 remake. And as of this writing, I have not seen the new movie. I do hope that--whether it is ultimately a success or not--it will inspire film fans to go back and take a look at this classic original. Certainly, this is a must-buy for anyone who loves the original film. And remember, Monster Fans. . .there are still many films of this kind that deserve the deluxe treatment. So before you complain about double (wait, make that TRIPLE) dipping to get your hard-earned bucks, remember that future releases are dependent on how well items like this sell. In other words, support your classic monsters! Sure, Dracula gave a face and a mythology to the vampire in the 1800s, but the werewolf didn't get similar treatment for quite some time. It was only with "The Wolfman" that the werewolf got his due, creating the template for lycanthropes everywhere -- a haunting, atmospheric story about a mildly creepy man who (through no fault of his own) turns into an unholy mixture of man and beast. Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr) returns to his ancestral Welsh home after many years away, to reconcile with his estranged dad who looks nothing like him (Claude Rains). He immediately starts acquainting himself with his old home, including being rather creepy towards a lovely woman named Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers), who is working at her dad's antique store. He even accompanies Gwen and her friend Jenny to a local gypsy camp to have their fortunes told. But after having her fortune told, Jenny is horribly killed by a wolf; Larry beats it to death with his silver-topped cane, but not before being bitten. You can probably guess what happens next -- the wolf turns out to be the gypsy fortuneteller (Bela Lugosi), and Larry's bite mysteriously heals overnight. And after being warned by an aged gypsy woman (Maria Ouspenskaya) that he has now contracted the curse of the werewolf, Larry finds himself undergoing a terrible transformation at night... and killing. It's a sign of how good "The Wolfman" is that its dated special effects (hello, lap dissolve!) and prosthetics don't hamper it as a story -- it's an intelligent, slowly-unfolding story about an ordinary man whose good deed backfires in a big way. It's also less "boo! Scary!" horror than psychological horror -- Larry is left wondering if the dead gypsy passed on his horrific curse, or if all the talk of werewolves has given him clinical lycanthropy. In other words -- is he cursed, or is he insane? Not a fun choice. And George Waggner wraps the movie in suitable atmosphere -- lots of misty forests, quaint rural villages, shadowy chapels and the occasional outbursts of shrieking and offscreen violence. The beginning is a little awkward (enough canned father-son "reunion" conversations!) but kicks into gear when the characters go wandering off to see the gypsies -- and after that, it's a slow bloody build as all the scientifically impossible things come true, and Larry finds himself increasingly trapped. And while some of the werewolf stuff (including the famous rhyme) was made up for the movie, it adds a note of mythological creepiness, as well as some lovely incantations ("The way you walked was thorny, through no fault of your own..."). And Lon Chaney Jr. did an excellent job bringing a sympathetic edge to the werewolf, turning convincingly from a jovial engineer/aristocrat to a man haunted by his horrific change. The one problem: he isn't very sympathetic at the beginning, since he basically stalks Gwen (looking in her window with a telescope?) and won't get lost when she tells him to. Ankers gives a good performance as a local love interest, and Ouspenskaya gives a spectacular performance as the old gypsy lady -- eerie, sympathetic to Larry's plight, and with a dry sense of humor. This special edition will be released just in time for the Benecio Del Toro remake, and as such they're also giving it the two-disc treatment. Older features include a feature commentary, Wolf-Man Archives, "Monster By Moonlight", and there's also a disk full of new documentaries -- one of Universal Horror movies, a documentary on the life and movies of Lon Chaney Jr, the life and art of Jack Pierce, and one on werewolf legends throughout history. Despite a slightly creepy lead character, "The Wolfman" is still an enduring classic -- it's no longer exactly scary, but it is deliciously spooky.
