(Halloween Remake is easily the most Brutal Film of 2007)
『Me and My mom went to go see this opening weekend and well that ruined her weekend, she hates horror movies, but i love them to death

Plot- Michael Myers is a 10 year old boy that has been in a mental instatution for 17 years (And he has not spoken a word for 15 years) but now he has broken out and is on a violent killing spree searching for his (still living) baby sister

Acting- a lot of f words

Gore- brutal head bashing, some slit throats, a lot of blood splatter, a bully gets beaten up with a stick, yeah it was mean

Bottom Line- 3 out of 5

Rated R for strong brutal bloody violence, and terror throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity, and langauge, Time 121min, 2007, Color』

(Rob all the way)
『Man their are some major haters on rob zombie, jeez people this movie was a masterpiece&so was part 2&so will be any movie rob zombie touches in the near future, like i said this movie was plain awesome&if you don't have it then your not a true Halloween fan&that's just the facts =)』

("Goes deeper into Michael Myers's story")
『When Rob Zombie released a remake of the first Halloween movie in 2007 reactions were mixed and many fans of the original couldn't understand why he was making a remake. This remake is different from the original and Zombie's remake of Halloween came as a total surprise to me; I didn't expect to like it at all and thought that he was going to ruin a classic of horror films. It goes deeper into the original Halloween story which I thought was fascinating and well done, it explains things and gives the movie more depth. I liked how the movie started with Michael Myers as a child and the flashback sequences which explained what just happened as Myers killed members of his family. You see an interview with Myers as a child and the setting is very interesting it tries to explain what happened. Then the movie progresses to the point where he is older and escapes from prison and murders people. There is more gore and everything seems more brutal than in the original which was to be expected and makes it more according to today's standards in horror movies. Some things are different and entertaining and are not an exact copy of the original scene by scene which I thought was well done and creative of Rob Zombie. It's like he took the movie and added things to it and made it his own.

Most remakes tend to be pretty bad (even if there are some great ones) and contrary to what many fans thought of Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween I actually enjoyed it and found it was a decent remake. Make no mistake this remake is not as good as the original one and it will never be I just think it was good and that it gave the movie an interesting twist to it. I thought it turned out better than some of the sequels. All I can say is that it's worth watching fans of the original or just curious people.

(Did We Really Need This Flick?)
『It's so typical that the notion of Michael Myers simply being born evil is essentially thrown out the window and replaced with the usual boy-within-a-dysfunctional-family deal. How very 21st century and how very lame. Besides the fact that I have been immune to these movies since the late 1980's, this film was a waste of my time. The only highlights were the appearances of Ken Foree (from the superior original version of "Dawn Of The Dead") and Micky Dolenz (of the 1960's band and TV show "The Monkees"). Other than that, ho hum. It's also too long.

Note to Hollywood: please stop with the remakes. Get some creative people in there and give us something new and fresh. Don't be afraid to try a worthwhile idea that does not require reaching back into the past. John Carpenter's superior "Halloween" was 1978. It should be left alone.』

(Careful With That Axe, Eugene)
『If you're autistic, like I am, you'll probably want to thrill to this documentary which explores the link between autism and mass violence. You see, Michael Meyers, like most autistics, finds himself lost in a world he never made. A world populated by frighteningly vulgar and loud neurotypicals who encroach relentlessly, victimizing him until he lashes out with great and fiery vengeance, laying waste to the sordid humanoids around him in a blistering blaze of white heat. The sister's boyfriend who got put down with an alunimum bat was particularly deserving of this fate, by the way. Just before getting his head beaten in, you see him fashioning a sandwich from noisesome cold cuts. He's the type of person who has absolutely no personality whatsoever, apart from a basic sloppiness of demeanor and a shaggy mane of hair that is in the process of fusing into white dreads. Such a pity his early demise. The world has lost so very much.

Michael then is unjustly incarcerated just for being a freedom fighter. His mother can't take how great he is, and so she blows her brainz out. Whatta shame. So then Michael lays waste to some worthless hillbillies and busts right out of the mental hooskow, leading the resident psychiatrist and stereotypical liberal to bleat "ooohh... oooh!"

Flash forward to later that night. More people need Michael to give them a proper seeing to, which he does, very autistically. You see, the man behind the mask is the perfect metaphor for autism. The sense of disconnect and alienation, the sense of needing shelter... add in the fact that the original Meyers mask was adapted from a rubber mask of Captain Kirk (William Shatner interpretation) and we've come full circle. Stick a knife in this one. It's well done. Rob Zombie learned from his mistakes in his first two movies and turned out an excellent movie.』

『Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects), "modern American horror's most eccentric and surprising filmmaker," (Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times) reinvents the ultimate slasher classic, unleashing Michael Myers for a bloody rollercoaster of a rampage like fans have never seen. Including a retelling of the original story that unfolds at a breakneck pace, as well as a chilling new introduction that finally reveals the secrets behind Myers' disturbing childhood, Halloween breathes new life into one of film history's most terrifying tales. "It will leave you speechless" (Spooky Dan, Bloody-Disgusting).』
『More of a supercharged revamp than a remake, Rob Zombie's take on John Carpenter'sHalloweenexpands the back story of masked killer Michael Myers in an attempt to examine the motivation for his first deadly attack, as well as some reasons for his longevity as a horror icon. Zombie's Myers is a blank-eyed teen (played by Daeg Faerch) whose burgeoning mental problems are left unchecked in a horrific home environment; harassed by schoolmates, a randy sister, and his mother's deadbeat boyfriend (William Forsythe, terrific as usual), Myers' homicidal explosion seems inevitable, and intervention by Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell, who offers a fast-talking, hippiefied version of the Donald Pleasance character) does little to impede his development into a mute, unstoppable killing machine (Tyler Mane) bent on finishing off the only survivor of his family's massacre--his sister, now grown into teenaged Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton). Opening up the psychological motivation of a cipher like Michael Myers is an interesting approach, but Zombie's script possesses neither a depth of character nor dialogue to offer more than a clichéd thumbnail character sketch, and devoting over a hour of the unrated cut's 120-minute-plus running time to this history feels bloated and self-indulgent (especially when compared to the lean efficiency of the Carpenter original). Zombie'sHalloweenisn't terribly suspenseful, either; he has a keen eye for visuals and the details of chaotic environments, but his scares are nothing more than brutal showcases for his special effects team. The end result barely surpasses the original film's numerous sequels, though the Who's Who of cult and character actors in the cast (including Zombie regulars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley and Ken Foree, as well as Brad Dourif, Udo Kier, Clint Howard, Richard Lynch, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, and Danielle Harris) adds a touch of late-night monster movie charm. However, the film's best performance belongs to the director's spouse, Sheri Moon Zombie, who brings unexpected pathos to the role of Myers' downtrodden mother.

The two-disc Unrated Director's Cut offers a full disc's worth of extras that should please Zombie fans; chief among the supplemental features is his commentary, which details the film's shooting history and the numerous edits required to deliver the theatrical version. A making-of featurette offers further details of Zombie's vision for the film, and there are featurettes on his cast choices and the many masks that Myers makes while incarcerated. Seventeen deleted scenes (two of which feature Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Towles) and an alternate ending (all with Zombie's commentary) are also provided, as well as footage from the casting sessions. A blooper reel, which is highlighted by unchecked mischief by McDowell and Dourif, offers the set's sole moment of levity.-- Paul Gaita

(Golden Vol 3)
『Easy transaction for me as a purchaser and everything in transaction completed as agreed, including shipping.』

(Classic entertainment)
『I purchased this DVD set for my wife as a Christmas gift. She would watch our granddaughter sit through some of the Cartoon Network shows and lament that "Those aren't cartoons! The old Looney Tunes! Those were cartoons!" She opened the gift with joy on Christmas and unfortunately picked up a virus after that and was in bed for a day or so. She put her Looney Tunes in the DVD player and found the laughter to be a good medicine - she said it felt just like when she was a kid and would stay home sick from school and watch cartoons. We're looking forward to picking up some of the Looney Tunes Godlen Collections to add to our video library! Th-th-th-that's all folks!』

(Trip down memory lane)
『I have the first four Golden Collections and this one is by far my favorite. The reason that this collection is so cool is that it doesn't focus just on the main staples such as Bugs and Daffy all the time. This set spreads its wings a little and it is a better set for it. As always disc one is all Bugs all the time but this is great because Bugs is the best! Disc 2 is my favorite disc because it is full of Hollywood parodies. If you are a classic movie fan such as myself you will love this disc because you get to see some of the screen greats get a nice jab thrown their way. Disc 3 is awesome because it is devoted to Porky Pig and who doesn't love Porky? Disc 4 is a hodge podge called All star cartoon party which is a collection of all the big stars such as Bugs, Daffy and the others. Again I love all the Golden collections so far but this set has it all!』

(Another Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume for Me!)
『What's up, Doc? I now have another volume of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection! The cartoons have never looked better or funnier than before. There are even more shorts in this collection than in the first volume. Even the cartoons with miscellaneous characters are really entertaining. I like the inro by Whoopie Goldberg. She had a terrific message to give before the cartoons started. Anyway, if you miss seeing the Looney Tunes on Cartoon Network or Boomerang, this and other Looney Tunes volumes are the stuff for you!』

(WARNING - SOME DEFECTIVE SETS OUT THERE!!)
『I purchased this volume along with volumes 1&2. After watching both volumes without incident, I pulled off the factory seal on volume 3 and discovered, instead of the DVDs, there were 5 BLANK Memorex CD-Rs! I'm not blaming Amazon, because they don't make the things. I writing this mainly as a warning to other customers. Amazon has allowed me to return the defective set and is sending me a replacement. I will post a review of the set once I receive it. Volumes 1&2 were great.』
『RESTORED, REMASTERED AND REE-DICULOUS: COMPLETELY UNCUT AND UNCENSORED LOONEY-NESS, INCLUDING SOME HOME VIDEO DEBUTS! You know what you want. More three-day weekends. More ounces in a pound of chocolates. More Looney Tunes. Your wish is our command. Because in this 4-disc set are 60 more of the most looneytic Looney Tunes ever unleashed on rabbit, duck, pig or humanity. Indeed, some have never before been on home video! Disc 1 features the tall, gray and haresome one. Disc 2 lampoons Hollywood. Ham actor Porky Pig rules Disc 3. And Disc 4 has the duck and a cast of crazies. One thing: to watch these, you must be as tall as this sign. Wrong disclaimer. Read the one in the box below. Got the idea? Now have fun. And pass the chocolates. Disclaimer Box Copy: The Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 3 Is Intended for the Adult Collector and May Not Be Suitable for Children.』
『Like the previous entries in theLooney Tunes Golden Collectionseries, volume 3 confirms how brilliant the Warner Bros. artists were and how durable their creations have proven. The set includes classics that every cartoon buff will recognize: "Duck! Rabbit! Duck!," "Robin Hood Daffy," "Birds Anonymous." Other selections are less familiar but significant in the development of the studio: "Sinkin' in the Bathtub," the first Looney Tune; "I Haven't Got a Hat," the earliest Warners cartoon viewers can watch for fun, rather than as an historic curiosity; "Porky's Romance," in which director Frank Tashlin introduced rapid cutting to cartoons. Some of the caricature films have aged less gracefully. Younger audiences will recognize the drawn versions of W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, Katharine Hepburn, and Charlie Chaplin. But will anyone under the age of 60 remember Edna Mae Oliver, George Arliss, or Ned Sparks?

The producers have once again loaded the discs with supplemental material, including "Point Food Rationing," a unseen short explaining wartime ration books; a BBC documentary on Chuck Jones; and interstitial animated sequences forThe Bugs Bunny Show. "Philbert" ranks as the oddest of the extras: an unsold (and leaden) pilot from 1963, featuring live actors and an animated title character. Whoopi Goldberg introduces the set, explaining that some of the ethnic gags would no longer be considered appropriate. But she correctly adds that to remove them would falsify both the history of animation and American popular culture. It all adds up to a set every cartoon fan will want. (Unrated, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence)--Charles Solomon

(Great movie!)
『This is a great movie! Sarah Brightman did a wonderful job! I'd even say Paris Hilton did well too. . . suprisingly!』

(Repo Rocks!)
『This is a great movie! It is clever, funny, entertaining and scary! What more could you ask for? The only down side is it is terribly bloody at times, but considering it is about a grave robber, well you figure it out. My 18-year-old daughter just loves it. The music is the best part of it. So shocking to watch! Enjoy!!! We bought our copy through Amazon. We bought a slightly used copy and it came so fast and is in great shape as promised!』

(The best movie I have ever seen)
『This movie was so amazing! Considering the tiny budget they had, the movie flowed so well, the special effects were absolutely incredible, the artwork was amazing, the actor was awesome, and the singing was beautiful.』

(I was REALLY disappointed)
『I was really looking forward to this when it arrived from Netflix, and maybe that was part of the problem. I had my hopes set too high. I had just seen Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, and was looking for other kooky musicals to fall in love with, so when Repo! appeared in my mailbox, I was psyched. It disappointed from the start, though I did try to give it the benefit of the doubt that it would pick up and be a bit more well written later in the movie. It wasn't. There were a couple of legitimately good songs in the movie, but for the most part I felt like i was watching something that was written as a standard movie, and then it was decided about halfway through production to turn it into a musical. Most of the songs did not feel at all like songs--more like they were just pages of script that someone set to music without any edits. The voices were all wonderful (well, the main character voices anyway). Paris Hilton wasn't anywhere near as annoying as I expected her to be. Anthony Stewart Head almost managed to salvage every one of his songs, though for most of the numbers he just couldn't pull off the impossible. Anyway, I guess it was just a very thorough letdown. The songs were very disappointing, and I felt like more money was spent on fake blood than on writing.

All that being said, the main actors were all wonderful and tried their darnedest to save the movie from its own writing.』

(Great movie no matter what Entertainment Weekly says!)
『This is a fun movie that is a little weird. The music was catchy. It reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture show in that it's not meant to be taken too seriously. Just to have fun with it. Slightly gross at times...I mean, he is the repo man...but it was overall a fun movie and I'm glad I purchased it!』
『Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 01/20/2009 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: R』
『LikeningRepo! The Genetic Operato its predecessors,Little Shop of HorrorsandRocky Horror Picture Show, conveys this film’s high camp and operatic bursts of song, but does little to describe how absolutely bizarreRepo!is. LikeRocky Horror, Repo!was written for stage performance by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich, who stars as a Graverobber, dolled up in vampiric makeup to resembleRocky Horror’siconic tranny, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Hiring newbie director, Darren Lynn Bousman, fresh out of film school to shoot this mutant movie, Smith and Zdunich clearly focused on writing comedy into extremely gruesome slasher scenes, which works with mixed results. Stills of comic strips contextualize each scene, telling the story of biotech corporation Geneco’s repossessions of organs that they implanted into various patients to save human lives during a long history of operations. Organs, here, were bought on credit, and as the economy nosedives, citizens of this a makeshift Gotham City cannot pay bills, and must forfeit their lives to repo men makea killing around town, literally. Heading this enterprise is CEO Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino), who has two bickering sons, Luigi (Bill Moseley) and Pavi (Nivek Ogre), whose white facemask is third generation Phantom, borrowing directly from Winslow Leach’s in Brian De Palma’sPhantom of the Paradise. Central to the plot is head repo guy/slaughterer, Nathan Wallace (Anthony Head ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer), who hides his career path to preserve his sexy teenage daughter, Shilo’s (Alexa Vega), innocence. As Shilo discovers her godmom, Blind Mag (Sarah Brightman), and the "Z"-addicted surgery slut, Amber Sweet (Paris Hilton), she embarks on adventures through an urban landscape constructed of metal gear, corpse piles, and S/M zombie girls, while dad straps people up in his torture chamber to take back body parts. Hmmmm. SinceRepo!looks likes a Marilyn Manson video, its musical niche sensibility will only appeal to fans who like Goth and Industrial music. To anyone who doesn’t go for that look, it does impress for its sheer dedication to choreography and song. In the least,Repo! The Genetic Operais an anomalous glimpse into visionary horror. --Trinie Dalton

(GREAT MOVIE!!!)
『GREAT movie, GREAT cast, GREAT acting, GREAT soundtrack! If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly suggest you buy it. It is FANTASTIC! Just make sure you can handle gore. Christian Bale does a fantastic job!』

(Close to Perfect BR Version)
『Lions Gate pulled no punches when They Re-Released
American Psycho on the HD Format

The Transfer is FLAWLESS it "Snaps, Crackles&Pops"
They took all the extras from The Killer Collector's Edition Including putting the UNCUT NC-17 Version on BR
One minus is
The American Psycho: From Book to Screen featurette wasn't brought over from the DVD (Which sucks)
That Featurette is great and adds allot of dimensions to the Film.

The Film is in League with Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Crazies, They Live, Requiem for a Dream, District 9, Watchmen, and George Orwell's 1984 Novel
There is such a HUGE Social Commentary through out the film it's deep and insightful.
It's a Must see Dark Masterpiece
WARNING: Adults Only
If u have kids make sure they don't see it
It will Freak 'em out if they see Batman Nude with a Chainsaw going Nuts!!!!!!!
A Great Film for some BAD Nightmares!

It's A Must have Blu-Ray Disc 9.7/10』

(Multiple Miggs-What did he say to you, Clarisse?)
『Ok all you wanna be Siskel and Eberts you are SUPPOSED to, actually, review the DVD as well-extras, quality, bonus features you know that sort of thing. Obviously the plot is above in the description of the film you are going to purchase.

Everyone's a friggin critic or reviewer.

BTW I hate Christian Bale---eat tuna all day F%$cker and die please DONT do any more movies』

(Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!)
『All the comments on the blu-ray transfer are correct. I rented this movie 2 years ago and was blown away by the pristine pq. Lionsgate really messed up bad with this which doesn't surprise me. This is not the first blu-ray transfer from lionsgate they destroyed. These people truly are clueless on pq. My advise to all that love this film is to try and find a used copy that was released by Universal Studios.』

(Love the movie but the Blu Ray isn't worth it)
『First off, American Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. It rocked my world the first time I saw it and I've probably seen the thing 100+ times. Mary Harron's take on Bret Easton Ellis's masterpiece is amazing, and Christian Bale brings the character of Patrick Bateman to life like none other. The brutal acts juxtaposed with Patrick's cool nonchalance is profoundly disturbing and creepy. If you haven't seen the movie, buy it at once.

As far as the Blu Ray version goes? Skip it. The intro with the white background looks absolutely horrible on Blu Ray. In fact, I put my old DVD copy in just to see the difference and I think the original upscaled DVD looks better on my PS3. There are no special features on the Blu Ray worth mentioning. Save yourself the trouble and get the DVD version instead.』

『Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed with success, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the '80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling.』
『The Bret Easton Ellis novelAmerican Psycho, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (Go Fish) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane.--Sean Axmaker

(The Killer Clown strikes again...and again...and again....)
『Is it the supernatural? Satan himself? The old monster in the closet? Richard Thomas' character doesn't know but it took his little brother and left him and his friends of a small, Maine town warped in mind and spirit. As a writer of the macabre I adore the chilling suspense and the character interactions in this Stephen King classic. Both book and movie are well-worth the purchase. The movie has a fine cast, is well directed and the special effects are also excellent. And Tim Curry will chill your socks off with his bravura performance as the Killer Clown. But where does the monster come from? You'll have to watch the movie and wait and see! The Winds of Hell』

(Scary classic!)
『Stephen King is the best and I love the scary feeling he portrays in his stories. It, the movie, is one of the few that the director actually captured that scariness!』

(One of the scariest movies ever)
『You know a movie is scary when it makes you hate clowns for the rest of your life. Seriously, I hate them. They should all be removed from society and locked away. Especially Pennywise. He is one mean monster clown.

Poor adaptation? I don't think so. The book is 1104 pages long. Sure some good stuff was left out, but you can only cram so much material into a three hour movies.

The actors were perfect for their roles, both as children and adults.

(Read the book instead. This is one of the worst adaptations of King's work.)
『The basic plot of IT is a group of kids come together to fight a monster lurking underneath the town,&come together again years later as adults to finish the job. As the book is over 1000+ pages,&seeing as how this mini series is 3 hours, it was inevitable that things would be cut.

The problem is, there is so much more to the book than just monster hunting. All of the themes&character development in King's novel got cut. The movie has extremely little of those things, so each scene is just one Pennywise encounter after another. This, quite frankly, is rather boring. The way King wrote the story was much more absorbing&riveting than whats shown in this. In King's book, there are many, many scenes with the characters interacting, or descriptions of Derry&its history, so I think its much more frightening when Pennywise does show up.

But apart from that, the adult actors are miscast&have no chemistry with each other. To be fair, the story was totally rushed&had very little character development, so the actors didn't have much to work with, but its a problem because one of the themes in King's book is friendship.

And of course, the movie is also ineptly made. What is with the cheap TV style score? It made it seem more cheesy than serious. They don't even capture the mood&atmosphere of King's novel,&this awful score doesn't help. The cinematography is bland&uninspired. There are no interesting shots. Oh, I also musn't forget the atrocious editing. For instance, the close ups of Pennywise showing its "scary" teeth are so painful&cheesy to watch. They don't mix in with the other shots in the scenes.

I won't get into the awful special effects at the end either, other than to say since they changed so much of King's story they might as well changed the ending too. This movie is not even close to being scary,&its like its supposed to be some bad parody of King's amazing book.

On the positives, I will say Curry was good, albeit he played the role for laughs rather than scares. I understand he's a clown, but he's much more scary in the book. The child actors were well cast,&some of the scenes were faithful to the book. Apart from these things, this movie is complete garbage. Read the book instead.』

(crazy for Stephen King movies)
『This movie keeps you wandering what is going to happen next. It does have alot of going back and forth in time between adulthood and childhood but it would not be any good if it didnt do that. Now I know why alot of people are afraid of "CLOWNS". This is one bad clown. I have a feeling Stephen King must have had a problem with clowns. What do you think?』
『Based on the King Of Horror's 1986 Best Seller, "It" is a jittery, jolting excursion into personal fear. "It" raises goosebumps-and brings out the stars. Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Annette O'Toole, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Tim Curry and Richard Thomas star in this thriller about a malevolent force in a small New England town.』
『Is there anything scarier than clowns? Of course not. And who knows scary better than Stephen King? You see where we're going.Itputs a malevolent clown (given demented life by a powdered, red-nosed Tim Curry) front and center, as King's fat novel gets the TV-movie treatment. Even at three hours plus, the action is condensed, but an engagingStand by Mevibe prevails for much of the running time. The seven main characters, as adolescents, conquered a force of pure evil in their Maine hometown. Now, the cackling Pennywise is back, and they must come home to fight him--or, should we say, It--again. Admitting the TV-movie trappings and sometimes hysterical performances, this is a genuinely gripping thriller. As so often with King, the basic idea (the bond formed during a childhood trauma) is clean and powerful, a lifeline anchored in reality that leads us to the supernatural.--Robert Horton

(Depressing, empty movie.)
『Don't recommend it. It will leave you depressed and wondering why you spent the two hours watching it. You can find a better movie, or something of more value to do with your time.』

(GOOD LITTLE THRLLIER DIDNT EXPECTED!!!)
『Usually if a studio dumps a film into a handful of theaters with no press screenings, it means the movie is a dog. NOT SO with Carriers, a surprisingly good thriller about a handful of survivors driving across the desert after an unnamed pandemic has decimated the country. Chris Pine, Christopher Meloni, Piper Perabo and Emily VanCamp all give very strong performances in this film, that although positioned as a horror film is really more a character study of what people are willing to sacrifice in order to survive. This movie is not filled with cheap direct to video tricks - there's no gratuitous violence, profanity or sex. Instead the film is unflinchingly bleak, well shot, face paced and filled with several quite poignant moments.

(The Trailer is More Exciting)
『This is possibly one of the most dissapointing "Zombie" movies I've ever seen. Very rarely are any "infected" seen, and the characters make possibly the worse decision any logical human could make. The remake of Day of the Dead is so much better in so many ways.

It's unfortunate since the trailer painted this as a original and compelling virus flick, but it ended up being flat and boring between the cliched writing, poor character decision, and lack of anything compelling visually.』

(Intense the entire way through)
『I just heard about this movie and since I'm a fan of viral movies and/or Chris Pine, I checked it out! Basic premise is that four travelers are attempting to hit a possibly safe/tucked away location from the lead character's childhood - all the while trying to steer clear of infected people. Naturally, this proves hard to do.

One of the things you notice about this film is that the cast is very strong and very believeable. These are just regular people who are just trying to survive as society completely disintegrates and the rules change. The director made smart choices in my opinion with no few special effects - and thus making the film simply more realistic, barren, and terrifying. The film raises the question of what would you do if faced with the same situation? And it does make you think.

Choices and rules are difficult and they have to be. Chris Pine is very strong in the lead role and it's a great change from his role as Jim Kirk. He still is very charming at times but also reveals he can go the distance emotionally.

This is one of the better movies I've seen of this genre in a long time and it's completely worth your time. Seriously.』

(Poor boring movie)
『I am glad I have never purchased this dog. The acting is fair but the movie is slow and never caught my attention. The death of one of the main characters was pretty bad. I rented this through Red Box and felt the $1 price was a waste.』
『Four kids are driving through the desert on the way to the beach, their faces anything but cheery: this isn't Spring Break. They're trying to outrun the end of the world and each other. In Alex and David Pastor'sCarriers, no one is safe from the viral pandemic threatening to wipe out the human race. Determined to elude the deadly virus, Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci), his brother Brian (Chris Pine), his girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Danny's school friend Kate (Emily VanCampo) speed across the Southwestern U.S. to reach a place of possible safety. Over the course of four days, the group is faced with moral decisions that no human should ever be forced to face. They discover that their greatest enemy is not the microbe attacking humanity, but the darkness within themselves.』

(evin's first review)
『I am eleven years old and I give Sherlock Homes five stars. When I went to see this movie it had a lot of action. Like things blowing up, and people fighting.
The movie was about a man "Sherlock Homes." Who tries to catch a man who is killing people with tricks?
This movie was awesome! It keeps you watching to see what happens next. It is really funny too. I don't see how those people don't laugh when they do their scripts.
The special effect was good. It looked like it was real. The way they set it up made it even better. It was set up in the old days. It had really good details too.
The meaning is very simple. It means to me that don't give up no matter what or who you are looking for. This movie is a must see. You should see it because the scenes. There are about three scenes that have slow motion in them. He thinks of what he's going to do then. BAM! He does it, and they are knocked out cold.

(Come Watson, the game is afoot!)
『I got this little series with a gift card and was anxious to see it. It's quite good. It was made in the sixties (you can tell by the hairstyles) and it was well made in the BBC fashion with exterior shots filmed and the interior ones taped. The first one is a two parter of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It is a good adaptation of the novel and worthy to stand up against adaptation of the Holmes' novel. The only downside to this collection is it's limitation to only five shows.
However, it is worthy of a look see.』

(PETER CUSHING AND THE BBC HOLMES)

I have all the Jeremy Brett versions of Sherlock Holmes on DVD but after seeing the 1959 film THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES with Peter Cushing wanted this set to see more of Cushing's portrayal of Holmes. Most viewers will not be disappointed with the Holmes portrayed by Peter Cushing. His acting is superb adding a bit of dash and difference to the Holmes stories.

One should take note, however, that THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES of this BBC TV set IS NOT the one of the 1959 movie also starring Christopher Lee. All features within this 3 disc set are from BBC TV. While interesting to see they can be a bit ragged in places and some of the sets leave a bit also to be wished for.

Overall if one enjoys Holmes and the Holmes' stories there cannot be any disappointment in these discs. It's unfortunate that only these handful of stories survive from those years.

Though I yet prefer the Jeremy Brett series as being more professionally done, these discs are good and enjoyable to watch. Unfair perhaps, but forty-plus years of improvement in film does make a difference. But Peter Cushing has left us with a capital performance where Sherlock Holmes is concerned, while the role of Dr. Watson is more than ably performed as well.

Semper Fi.』

(Great release, but incomplete)
『It's great to see this on American DVD (NTSC). I have the PAL set from BBC but it doesn't play well on my all-region player. This set is much better. It's too bad A&E didn't arrange to include the two earlier b/w shows from the BBC with Douglas Wilmer as Holmes: the 1964 pilot (The Speckled Band) and the first of the 1965 series of 12 episodes (The Illustrious Client), which appeared on PAL VHS from BBC in 1996.』

(A must for Holmes fans)
『The series is worth watching for the Holmes of Peter Cushing, as well as Nigel Stock's take on Watson. The guests are unfamiliar aside from Gary Raymond and Frank Middlemass. The main flaws are the slow pace and low budget sets, as well as color, which never seems suited to the Victorian settings.
The biggest surprise here is a complete verison of "A Study in Scarlet", which one book claimed only had a few scenes that still existed. The changes in the story were minor, a minus being in not keeping the first meeting of Holmes and Watson, a big plus being the deletion of the dull flashback from the book.
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" is a bit disappointing, it suffers from the two part telling and, being fairly faithful to the novel, has far too little Holmes. Two other flaws, a cave floor creaks badly and the story ends abruptly.
"The Boscombe Valley Mystery" wasn't one of Doyle's best and is probably the weakest in the collection here, due in part to the poor supporting cast.
"The Sign of Four" stuck fairly close to the novel, except for the end. Only the Arthur Wontner verison actually had the nerve to allow watson to marry.
"The Blue Carbuncle" has the most padding to fill the time, but does feature a good scene where Watson gets a laugh at Holmes' expense after a faulty deduction.
Those who think Cushing was too short to play Holmes should reread "The Three Students" and "The Abbey Grange", where Holmes gives himself gives his height at six feet, the same as Cushing. (Arthur Wontner was an inch shorter by the way.)
Even with the flaws this is easily the best television Holmes collection out there and is second only to the better Rathbone films.』

『Only five episodes of the BBC s celebrated 1960s Sherlock Holmes series survive. Coincidentally, all five star the inimitable Peter Cushing (Star Wars) as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s legendary detective, with Nigel Stock as Dr. Watson. And, fortunately for Holmes fans, they have finally been made available on DVD in North America, courtesy of A&E.

Having already starred as Holmes in the famous Hammer film Hound of the Baskervilles, Cushing was uniquely suited to craft the definitive portrayal for these five captivating televised mysteries. For his first outing as the BBC s Holmes, Cushing revisits the moors of Dartmoor for a feature-length version of Holmes most well-known case, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Subsequent adventures pit his vaunted intellect against murderers, cannibals and Australian bushwackers in faithful productions of The Sign of the Four, The Blue Carbuncle, A Study in Scarlet and The Boscombe Valley Mystery.』

(Revenge, Girl Power and Great Music)
『This is simply the best revenge movie ever. And, with all due respect to Tarantino's other incredible films, this may have the best dialogue of all, except for Inglorious Besterds. On top of that, the soundtrack is one every filmmaker should envy. So imagine improving "Thelma and Louise", with a modern day Mad Max played by Kurt Russell going up against a modern day version of "Little Women" crossed with "Charlie's Angels" without the Charlie and focus on surface sex appeal. Then you might be able to comprehend just how blanking good this movie is. Thank you Tarantino.』

(Must Have)
『Starts off a bit slow, but ends brilliantly! A must have for anyone who loves Tarantino, guys who love typical guy things, and for girls with an edge.』

(XLNT QT Flick)
『First off, I skimmed the 1-star reviews to see what all the bitching was about- it seems people are complaining about the two movies (Planet Terror and Deathproof) being split off into separate releases, and the subsequent loss of the fake trailers from the original double feature theatrical release. Boohoo! Hey, if you were a filmmaker, you'd split a double feature in half for the dvd release too- you make more money that way- and it is show 'business', right?

So a 1-star movie that attacks the dvd release's format and doesn't address the film itself is useless.

"Deathproof" is an outstanding movie and another excellent entry into Quentin T's body of work. Interesting and quirky characters, dialogue and relationships that draw you in and make you curious- and when Rose McGowan's character gets in Stuntman Mike's car for a ride home, it is a deliberate 'don't go in the basement!' moment worthy of the goriest slasher flick. The car chase sequences are some of the best you'll ever see on screen, as 3 girls in a 1970 Dodge Challenger hunt down Stuntman Mike with maniacal joy.

Great movie, great fun, one of my favorites.』

(enjoyed this movie)
『Yes there is not much plot here but overall it is a good movie. Enjoyed the dialogue between the girls in the first and second parts. Enjoyed seeing the revenge in the end. Not for everyone but Tarantino fans will not be disappointed.』

(not a great tarantino film)
『I always watch tarantino's movies because when he's good he's great (pulp fiction, reservoir dogs) unfortunately this is just not one of his great movies. I was okay but not what I anticapated.』
『A deranged stuntman stalks his victims from the safety of his killer car, but when he picks on the wrong group of badass babes, all bets are off in an adrenaline-pumping, high speed, white-knuckle automotive duel of epic proportions, where anything can happen.』
『Loud, fast, and proudly out of control,Grindhouseis a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Tarantino'sDeath Proofis the mellower of the two, relatively speaking; it's wordier (as to be expected) and rife with pulp/comic book posturing and eminently quotable dialogue. It also features a terrific lead performance by Kurt Russell as a homicidal stunt man whose weapon of choice is a souped-up car. Tarantino's affection for his own dialogue slows down the action at times, but he does provide showy roles for a host of likable actresses, including Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, and newcomer Zoe Bell, who was Uma Thurman's stunt double inKill Bill. Detractors may decry the rampant violence and latch onto a sexist undertone in Tarantino's feature, but for those viewers who grew up watching these types of films in either theaters or on VHS, such elements will be probably be more of a virtue than a detrimental factor. --Paul Gaita

Not expecting much from a movie makes for no disappointments. I slipped the disc in with no certain hope. What a surprise when the final credits floated off the screen. I found myself left with the gruesome reality of what the hunger for vengeance can do to an innocent victim. Sweeney Todd, a barbaric barber who seeks to settle the score for the robbery of his perfect life, is masterfully played by Johnny Depp. His devilish companion, Mrs. Lovett, was played by Helena Bonham Carter. She selfishly keeps Todd blinded to everything but his need for reckoning. She does this by feeding Todd's ravenous anger with exposed necks for his barber's blades to devour. The blades themselves could have won an Oscar for best supporting actor. They were brought to life in the hands of Todd and the lighting of the movie. They glistened in a similar manner to that of an evil eye just before a malevolent plot unfolds.

Todd and Lovett sing charming tunes in a gentle British accent while cutting the throats of whoever may wander their direction. Although it seems contradicting, it is a perfect melody of emotions which helps the viewer see past the gore and find the relevance of their corruption. As if this was not enough, the duo further defiles the clueless people traveling Fleet Street by secretly serving their victims up in a pie.

Although Todd is sinister and brutal some may say it was not without cause. He had the life that anyone would wish for: a lovely wife, a beautiful baby girl, and a successful barber shop. Unfortunately his idyllic life was coveted and stolen by the dark-hearted judge played by Alan Rickman. The judge exiled Todd for fifteen years while he defiled his wife and claimed his daughter for himself. When Todd returns to London he is a changed man. He has returned angry and ready to make everyone pay for what he has lost.

Tim Burton brought his masterful creative eye to this project as the film's director. Todd begins the movie on a ship headed for London. He sings, "There's a hole in the world like a great black pit and the vermin of the world inhabit it." Once he hits the shore you see Todd has arrived in that pit. The mood is perfectly captured in the use of hues and the angles chosen for the camera lens. Watching the smoke course from the chimney the viewers are left feeling cold and dirty. You can hear the dampness looming when the unaware city dwellers walk through the residue of rain resting on the cobble stone streets. The only use of vivid shades is when Lovett attempts to paint the possibility of a happy union between her and Todd. The contrast in color boldly communicates this future is impossible.

If you can tolerate the bloody violence this is a worthwhile movie to see. Attempt to see beyond the animated slashing and ask yourself, "Who benefits from a life driven by revenge?" Retribution can serve a purpose and there are times when bad things happen to good people. The message is clear; don't be blinded by the need for reckoning or you may become the villain, driving away any chance for peace and you will lose sight of who you love most.

(Not as good as I was expecting.)
『Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Tim Burton, 2007)

Perhaps my problem with Tim Burton's much-praised adaptation of Sweeney Todd is that I'm seeing it too soon after Dave Moore's version, which was the sublime side of the sublime/ridiculous coin. It's not that this version is bad, in any way, it's just not all that good compared to a number of Burton's other masterworks.

Burton regulars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter take on the roles of Sweeney Todd and his neighbor Mrs. Lovett, a destitute pie-seller. Todd, a barber by trade, is bent on getting revenge against Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who sent him to prison in order to steal his lovely young wife. Todd starts taking out those standing in his way, and needs something to do with the bodies. Lovett hatches a plan--grind 'em up and sell 'em as Mrs. Lovett's meat pies. They, of course, sell like the proverbial hotcakes. Tension arises when Lovett starts having feelings for Todd, who is so obsessed with his revenge and his lost love that he has eyes for nothing else...

Burton brings the same phantasmagoric, hallucinatory visuals to Sweeney Todd that he did to his previous remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and when it comes right down to it, I wasn't all that fond of them in that movie, either (which I just looked up; I gave it two and a half stars back in 2006). The over-the-top Burton vision works just fine for me when he's doing original material (viz. Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice), but when it comes to Burton adaptations, I always preferred the much lower-key look of Sleepy Hollow (or, while it's not a remake, the similar feel of his best film, Ed Wood). I'm also not as fond of the Sondheim adaptation, which Burton follows rather faithfully here, as of some other incarnations of Sweeney Todd. It really comes down to whether you want your murder and cannibalism with lighthearted whimsy, as presented here, or whether you want it in a dark, claustrophobic presentation without musical numbers, which you get from Moore's 2006 adaptation. **½

(Dark Miracle of a Movie)
『What is it about the musical? Just when you think the genre's dead and buried, along comes this lyrical, flowing, river of dark poetry. The screenwriter-- a lifelong fan of Sondheim's masterpiece-- did a brilliant job of adapting a semi-Brechtian theater piece and making it into a dark dream film. Gone is the post-modernism, replaced by grand guignol that may sometimes scream too brightly in crimson, but that works far better than one might have had reason even to hope.

I loved every minute of it (and if there were a few seconds here and there I could have lived without, well, that's why fingers are long enough to shield the eyes from the sight of lawyers being processed into sausage).』

(What's so scary about this????)
『I had heard a great deal about how frightening this movie was. I guess the concept is a bit scary, but in this day and age, it's not nearly as scary as a madman with nuclear weapons, or people walking into shopping centers or classrooms with automatic weapons. I know that the play was a musical, but it would have been a great deal more frightening if the characters hadn't burst into song periodically. On the plus side, this proves that Tim Burton can sing.』
『Johnny Depp and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller "Sweeney Todd." Depp stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again." Joining Depp is Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney's amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes Alan Rickman, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison and Timothy Spall as the Judge's wicked associate Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen is a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.』
『After years of rumors, it turns out that Tim Burton was the perfect visionary to filmSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway masterpiece, and the result is a macabre and moving musical movie as enthralling as anything Burton has ever done. The show's mix of gothic horror, Grand Guignol, verydark humor, and witty and beautiful music never was the stuff of traditional musical comedy, but it's a powerful work, and perhaps the richest of the late 20th century. In the movie, Burton's frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp, plays Todd, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 19th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber). Helena Bonham Carter, another Burton mainstay, is Mrs. Lovett, the barber's partner-in-unspeakable-crime. It's no surprise that Depp is an excellent choice to convey Todd's brooding intensity and volcanic rage, but he can also sing a score that is so challenging it has often played in opera houses (though not with the same style as the Broadway original, Len Cariou, and he occasionally lapses into pop style). Bonham Carter is small of voice and lacks the humor of the original Broadway Lovett, Angela Lansbury, but she sings on pitch, in rhythm, and in character at the same time, which is no small feat for a Sondheim show. Aficionados will regret the loss of certain musical passages--"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" is just an instrumental overture and the chorus is gone altogether, among others--but the reassuring presence of orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and conductor Paul Gemignani ensures that the music feels right and sounds great. And the film's depiction of a Victorian London hellhole--with cinematography by Dariusz Wolski and costumes by Colleen Atwood--also looks and feels right.

The excellent cast is filled out by Alan Rickman as the villainous Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as his seedy Beadle, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) as a rival barber, Jamie Campbell Bower as the young lover Anthony, Jayne Wisener as his object of affection, and Ed Sanders as the young Toby. For fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp who don't think they like musicals,Sweeney Toddshould be a revelation (though not for the squeamish, as the gore is intense and completely appropriate). For fans of Broadway and Sondheim, it's hard to imagine getting a better adaptation than this. The fact that there's no newly composed Oscar-bait song sung by a Josh Groban-type over the end credits only makes it better.--David Horiuchi

(Monster Movie Heaven comes in a long-overdue deluxe edition)
『If you've been keeping up with the DVD releases of Universal Monsters, you might already know this is the 3rd time The Wolf Man has been released in the past 10 years. But this new deluxe 2-disc edition should prove to be the definitive release. In addition to a spectacular restoration (which is still not quite perfect, but probably the best the film will ever look on home video), there is an exhaustive array of bonus features. Actually, only two of them are new, but when added to the already excellent extras carried over from previous releases, this is simply a must-have for anyone with even a slight interest in the film.

But let's take a quick look at the film itself. The Wolf Man has always been my favorite Universal Monster. I think it's the combination of Curt Siodmak's poetic and gothically romantic screenplay, and the Everyman performance of Lon Chaney Jr. as Larry Talbot. Chaney will perhaps forever reside in the shadow of contemporaries like Karloff and Lugosi, but it's difficult to imagine either of those horror superstars bringing the same authenticity to the role of Talbot.

Chaney also gets winning support from Claude Rains, Patrick Knowles and Evelyn Ankers (whose well-documented dislike of Chaney also serves as a testament to her acting abilities...the two are charming together on-screen). Maria Ouspenskaya also appears in her signature roles as the gypsy Maleva, while Bela Lugosi has a too-brief but equally-memorable role as her son.

As for the bonus features, the two new ones are a brief (10 min.) overview of werewolf movies featuring the likes of John Landis, Rick Baker and several film critics, and a 36-minute documentary on Chaney's career. As a long-time fan of this fan and Lon Chaney Jr., I confess I didn't learn a lot of new facts about the actor; but for the uninitiated, it will no doubt provide some much-needed illumination into the man and his body of work.

Also, in case you missed the previous releases, here are the holdover supplements: "Monster By Moonlight" is a well-done look at the film and its sequels, hosted by John Landis. There's a documentary on makeup wizard Jack Pierce. A trailer gallery features previews for several werewolf films, including the new 2010 version of The Wolf Man (by the way, props to Universal for not making this set an extended commercial for the remake, the way some of the bonus materials in The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) did for Stephen Sommer's 2003 bomb Van Helsing (Widescreen Edition)). "Universal Horror" is a terrific feature-length documentary on all of Universal's classic horror output. Lastly, an audio commentary with Tom Weaver provides deeper insight into the film's production.

Now it must be said that this long-overdue set would probably not have been released at this time without the 2010 remake. And as of this writing, I have not seen the new movie. I do hope that--whether it is ultimately a success or not--it will inspire film fans to go back and take a look at this classic original. Certainly, this is a must-buy for anyone who loves the original film. And remember, Monster Fans. . .there are still many films of this kind that deserve the deluxe treatment. So before you complain about double (wait, make that TRIPLE) dipping to get your hard-earned bucks, remember that future releases are dependent on how well items like this sell. In other words, support your classic monsters! Enjoy the set; I give it my highest recommendation.』

(wolfbane and silver)
『"Even a man who is pure in heart/And says his prayers by night/May become a wolf/When the wolfbane blooms/And the autumn moon is bright..."

Sure, Dracula gave a face and a mythology to the vampire in the 1800s, but the werewolf didn't get similar treatment for quite some time. It was only with "The Wolfman" that the werewolf got his due, creating the template for lycanthropes everywhere -- a haunting, atmospheric story about a mildly creepy man who (through no fault of his own) turns into an unholy mixture of man and beast.

Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr) returns to his ancestral Welsh home after many years away, to reconcile with his estranged dad who looks nothing like him (Claude Rains). He immediately starts acquainting himself with his old home, including being rather creepy towards a lovely woman named Gwen Conliffe (Evelyn Ankers), who is working at her dad's antique store. He even accompanies Gwen and her friend Jenny to a local gypsy camp to have their fortunes told.

But after having her fortune told, Jenny is horribly killed by a wolf; Larry beats it to death with his silver-topped cane, but not before being bitten. You can probably guess what happens next -- the wolf turns out to be the gypsy fortuneteller (Bela Lugosi), and Larry's bite mysteriously heals overnight. And after being warned by an aged gypsy woman (Maria Ouspenskaya) that he has now contracted the curse of the werewolf, Larry finds himself undergoing a terrible transformation at night... and killing.

It's a sign of how good "The Wolfman" is that its dated special effects (hello, lap dissolve!) and prosthetics don't hamper it as a story -- it's an intelligent, slowly-unfolding story about an ordinary man whose good deed backfires in a big way. It's also less "boo! Scary!" horror than psychological horror -- Larry is left wondering if the dead gypsy passed on his horrific curse, or if all the talk of werewolves has given him clinical lycanthropy. In other words -- is he cursed, or is he insane? Not a fun choice.

And George Waggner wraps the movie in suitable atmosphere -- lots of misty forests, quaint rural villages, shadowy chapels and the occasional outbursts of shrieking and offscreen violence. The beginning is a little awkward (enough canned father-son "reunion" conversations!) but kicks into gear when the characters go wandering off to see the gypsies -- and after that, it's a slow bloody build as all the scientifically impossible things come true, and Larry finds himself increasingly trapped.

And while some of the werewolf stuff (including the famous rhyme) was made up for the movie, it adds a note of mythological creepiness, as well as some lovely incantations ("The way you walked was thorny, through no fault of your own...").

And Lon Chaney Jr. did an excellent job bringing a sympathetic edge to the werewolf, turning convincingly from a jovial engineer/aristocrat to a man haunted by his horrific change. The one problem: he isn't very sympathetic at the beginning, since he basically stalks Gwen (looking in her window with a telescope?) and won't get lost when she tells him to. Ankers gives a good performance as a local love interest, and Ouspenskaya gives a spectacular performance as the old gypsy lady -- eerie, sympathetic to Larry's plight, and with a dry sense of humor.

This special edition will be released just in time for the Benecio Del Toro remake, and as such they're also giving it the two-disc treatment. Older features include a feature commentary, Wolf-Man Archives, "Monster By Moonlight", and there's also a disk full of new documentaries -- one of Universal Horror movies, a documentary on the life and movies of Lon Chaney Jr, the life and art of Jack Pierce, and one on werewolf legends throughout history.

Despite a slightly creepy lead character, "The Wolfman" is still an enduring classic -- it's no longer exactly scary, but it is deliciously spooky. Definitely a must-see.』
