>,Anna Paquin,Stephen Moyer,Sam Trammell,Ryan Kwanten,Rutina Wesleyprice: HBO Home Video Not yet released Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (I now envy people with a southern accent) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Now, when i rate DVDs/Blu-rays/Movies, I'm often confused on what I'm rating. Am I rating the show (since i clearly do not own the DVD yet), or am I expected to rate the DVD with commentaries, extras, etc? But, This series is definitely one of the better shows on TV. I personally thought the show would fizzle after the first season, but the show only got better, took more risk, and became edgier. It basically took the volume of the first season and turned it up a couple of notches. Everything about this show fits well. Character interactions, Soundtrack, Great actors, 'stage props'.... it doesnt feel too far fetched The only issue i think i really have is the edginess seemed to be a lil extreme... Like, the sex scenes where elongated, several nude shots could been avoided, etc... but I loved it either way. 』 (This series is AWESOME) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I love this series! I watched it on HBO and fell in love. I immediately bought all the books and pre-ordered the next. It helps to have watched Season 1, but you can follow along well enough without it. You don't have to have read the books for it to make sense, either. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone! Oh, and Blu-ray is the only way to watch it! It is grainy and dark on DVD.』 (Another fine season for one of TV's more entertaining shows) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『In its second season TRUE BLOOD remained something of a phenomenon, one of the highest rated shows ever on HBO and widely discussed across the Internet by critics and fans. As in Season Two, the show more or less followed the storylines laid down by the Sookie Stackhouse novels, but Alan Ball and his team of writers felt free to make significant alterations. For instance, Season One ended with the impression that Lafayette, who does indeed die in the book, had been murdered. Happily, Lafayette, who was a minor character in the books, lives to sin another day in the TV series. And the maenad of the book, who was a minor though important character in the second novel, was elevated to the level of Season Two big bad. Sookie's brother Jason, who is a moderately important character in the books, continued to function as a major character on the series (though in a more clothed state). In my opinion TRUE BLOOD might be the finest guilty pleasure show ever made. The very best shows are characterized by the richness and multiplicity of their subtexts. One of the marks of a guilty pleasure show is the relative absence of subtexts. One of the reasons that academics have embraced shows like BUFFY and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is the extraordinary number of themes and texts running through them. BUFFY alone has produced a prodigious body of literature. TRUE BLOOD possesses subtexts, but not many and none of much sophistication. The show deals with prejudice, of course, with vampires and shape shifters standing in for any kind of Season Two focused primarily on two arcs, one dealing with the Fellowship of the Sun, a virulent anti-vampire church (pretty transparently a parody of anti-gay Christian activism, and the other with the appearance of the maenad, an immortal being who takes on the identity of Maryann (played by Michelle Forbes, one of the finest actors on TV whose work I normally love a lot, but who sort of irritated me here - her work as Admiral Cain on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is one of the finest guest roles I've seen in recent years). Intertwined with this are a host of other stories, such as Andy Lefleur's descent into alcoholism, Lafayette's torture for selling V and then his recruitment to do the very same thing, and the tough transition of Bill's ward Jessica to being a teenaged vampire. And through all of this the entire town of Bon Temps, suffering under the spell of Maryann, engage in one bacchanal after another. There were a couple of nice Arkansas (my home state) connections in the season. Several scenes were shot in a church, which was supposed to be the home congregation for the anti-vampire Fellowship of the Sun, involved in one of the season's major plotlines. I wasn't familiar with the church, but I instantly recognized it as the work of Arkansas's foremost architect, Faye Jones. He is widely celebrated as the architect for the famed Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a building that routinely is named as among the most beautiful structures in the United States. If you know Jones work, the church in TRUE BLOOD was instantly recognizable. My brother's late father-in-law was an architect. He was a student of Faye Jones at the University of Arkansas, where Jones founded the architecture department, against the recommendation of his employer Frank Lloyd Wright. The second Arkansas tie in was Sam's being told by his foster father the whereabouts of someone Sam was looking for. Where? Magnolia, Arkansas. What makes that interesting is that Magnolia is the small Arkansas town in which Charlaine Harris lives and where she created the world of Sookie Stackhouse.』 (Blood will run) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The second season of HBO's smash hit True Blood picks up with a new murder mystery in the Bon Temps, as mind-reading waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her vampire boyfriend Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) take their relationship to a higher level, and no sooner find themselves tasked by Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) on a mission of great importance to the vampire community, all the while Bill has to deal with caring for and teaching his recently turned protege Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll). On the flipside of things, Tara (Rutina Wesley) gets drawn deeper into the web that the demonic Maryann (Michelle Forbes) who is continuing to spin her plot to trap Sam (Sam Trammell), Jason (Ryan Kwanten) joins the quasi-Christian-fascist organization known as the Order of Light, and Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) finds himself in a very grave situation that he may not recover from. Having never read any of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels, I cannot account for how faithful True Blood is to the source material, but what I can say is that Alan Ball's adaptation is loads of addictive fun. Between the smoldering chemistry between Paquin and Moyer, and no lack of genuine surprises (who knew a vamp could fly?) and dark laughs to boot("teacup humans" indeed, Eric is fine form throughout the season), the second season of True Blood is definitely the best thing to come along on HBO in a while. If there's any drawbacks, it's that the season finale proves kind of anticlimactic, but it sets the stage for some major developments to come in the future. All in all, if you've been missing True Blood at all since its inception, saying you've been missing out is quite the understatement.』 (HBO's True Blood breaks free and stands on its own) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『If you're a fan of Charlene Harris' Southern Vampire series, you were probably a little disappointed by the first season's adaptation. The problem with season 1 was that it tried to follow too closely to the actual written word, but the translation from page to screen is always hard to do successfully. With Season Two, the True Blood cast took a well needed step apart from the written cannon and struck out on its own, while still remaining faithful to the spirit of the novel series. Season Two takes its time to step away from the main characters of Sookie and Bill and really starts to focus on the other cast members. Deciding whether to bill Jason or Tara or Sookie as the lead would be a hard choice in this season if you were to judge on screen time alone. There are three main plots in Season Two: Sam's past and the true nature of Maryann Forrester; Jason and the Fellowship of the Sun Church; Eric and the disappearance of Godric (Sookie's trip to Dallas). Minor subplots include Hoyt and his vampire girlfriend (the newly-turned-by-Bill, Jessica Hamby), Sam and Daphne's "similarities", Andy Bellefleur's fall from grace, Lafayette's "business" catching up with him, and Tara/"Eggs"/Lettie Mae (Mom) relationship issues. Where Season One had a bad habit of lagging along in the storyline, leaving quite a few "ho-hum" moments, Season Two maintains a fleet-footed pace and maintains it through the entire season. You'll love having this season on DVD since you won't have to wait week-by-week for new episodes. Needless to say, the cliffhanger at the end of the final episode will probably elicit a few choice words directed at HBO for taking a year in order to air new episodes. Having watched True Blood in it's native HD resolution as well as in non-HD, the Blu-Ray investment is worth every penny. The HD quality truly allows the dank, bog-ridden feel of the swamp really shine through, and the music from the series adds a lot to the overall atmosphere. If you weren't able to watch True Blood live on HBO and were on the fence about buying this set, go for it! You won't be disappointed.』 『Welcome back to Bon Temps, home to mystery, Southern sensuality and dark secrets. For Sookie Stackhouse, life is more dangerous than ever after she and Bill become more deeply involved. Meanwhile, Tara finds herself under a lover’s spell; Sam puts his trust in an unlikely ally; Jason becomes involved with an anti-vampire sect; Eric becomes interested in Sookie after he recruits her to investigate the disappearance of his 2,000-year-old maker; and Maryann is revealed to possess a power that can control almost everyone in town. Then, after making a shocking discovery, Sookie, Bill and Sam must form the last line of defense against a diabolical plan that raises this award-winning series to bloody new heights. True Blood: The Complete Second Seasonincludes all 12 episodes of this critically acclaimed series from Alan Ball, writer of the Academy Award®-winning Best PictureAmerican Beautyand creator ofSix Feet Under. In this one Michael is still killing off everyone around his sister to terrorize her, before he finally finishes her off. But she of course is trying to survive and so it goes. The dvd is well done but a blu ray release is needed with perhaps halloween 3 as a bonus movie on it. This is great horror and well worth seeing ONLY after you see the original Halloween.』 (Halloween II -A great Sequel.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Halloween Parts 1 And 2, Are Definitive Horror Movie Classics,It is disturbing yes, Disturbing as you would see On any night of News Coverage on Television,or as Disturbing as People's everyday Declining Morals,But the movie is What Horror Movies Should be, Not meant to Glamorize Crime, but that there is Evil In the World sadly. This movie is not the typical Gore Zombie Movie,But it will creep you out!Not to mention the Eerie track!Donald Pleasence is awesome as is a Beautiful Jamie Lee Curtis Before she ruined her hair!and Unlike Part 3(WHY!??) Part 2 Is a Great Sequel, which is rare, given that Sometimes Sequels are horrible.』 (November 1, 1978) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I like to think of Halloween II as a movie that takes place mostly in the early morning hours of November 1, 1978. This sequel to Halloween is generally a good movie that is designed to be a continuation of the night of October 31, 1978, when Michael Myers terrorized the babysitting Laurie Strode and her friends, one of which was also babysitting, while others were just goofing around having a good time. Halloween is a classic. That movie ends with Michael Myers being shot by Dr. Sam Loomis, only to run away seconds later. That was supposed to be it. John Carpenter and Debra Hill did not have a sequel in mind. But they were pressured into making a sequel. John Carpenter has said that when it was time to write the screenplay he was drawing a blank. He didn't know what to write. Finally he started to come up with ideas, even going as far as making Laurie Strode Michael Myers' sister. Now that is a sign of somebody who is trying to come up with a screenplay for a movie he didn't even want to make (see my review of Halloween III - Season Of The Witch for a more thorough analysis) You see, the original game plan after Halloween was to make a different Halloween movie every year with a completely different story and theme than the previous movie, sort of like the old The Twilight Zone TV show. Michael Myers was never meant to keep appearing in movie after movie. It was supposed to stop after Halloween. Well, OK, they made the second movie, so it was supposed to stop after Halloween II, when Michael Myers burned to death. It did. For one movie. Halloween III did not have Michael Myers in it. It's a great movie that goes in the direction that Carpenter and Hill wanted to go into after Halloween - making a different Halloween movie every year with an entirely different story. The general public didn't like Halloween III. Carpenter and Hill then ended their involvement with the franchise. Now about Halloween II... This movie begins with showing the last few moments of Halloween, when Michael Myers is shot by Dr. Loomis. This footage is mostly alternate unused takes shot while Halloween was being filmed in 1978, while some of the footage are the actual takes that were used in the first movie. If you pay attention, you'll notice that Loomis fires seven shots at Michael Myers. In the first movie, he fires six. Anyway, Myers gets away and starts to stalk around town. It is clear that this movie was influenced by the movies that were coming out at the time that featured lots of blood and splatter scenes. It's unfortunate, because Halloween didn't rely on blood to be effective. But in Halloween II it seems that Carpenter and Hill were feeling the pressure of the marketplace, so they made it like a Friday The 13th movie as far as the blood and gore goes. To sum up the story, Michael Myers is trying to find his SISTER Laurie Strode, who was taken to the hospital after being injured in the first Halloween. Myers stalks her at the near empty (and creepy) hospital and kills some of the hospital staff along the way. At the end of the movie it appears that Michael Myers has burned to death. He DID burn to death after Dr. Loomis flicks his lighter while gas fills the air that causes an explosion. In fact, you have to believe that Loomis was killed in that explosion, also. But seven years later there was this movie that came out called Halloween 4 - The Return Of Michael Myers. What it really was was an opportunity to resurrect Michael Myers for the sake of making $$$$. If Jason Voorhees and Freddie Krueger are invincible, why not make Michael Myers invincible? It means $$$$, plain and simple. If there's anything good about the continuation of the series beginning with Halloween 4, it's that at least John Carpenter and Debra Hill weren't involved. They were long gone, because they were smart. The first Halloween movie was an independent film. That's one reason why it's so good. Once Hollywood takes over a franchise, forget it. That's why the whole series is so screwed up. There is no continuity. Halloween H2O is really the sequel to Halloween II. The musical score to Halloween II is good, but not as good as the first movie. The movie overall just doesn't compare to the first one, but it is still a pretty good movie. A lot of the feel of the first movie was absent in this second movie, though it does get major points for the creepy atmosphere at the hospital late at night. You'll see some things that make this "continuation of the night" seem like a different movie altogether. But if you take this movie at face value, it IS an entertaining movie. Just not the same as the first one. 4 stars』 (Michael Myers is home to stay!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Picking up exactly where the original left off "Halloween 2" is able to deliver just as much horror movie entertainment as the original "Halloween". Everything about this movie makes it a classic; reinforcing the character development of the first movie while developing the new characters shown here, the plot, the series of events, and the acting, which I forgot to mention in my review of the original "Halloween". Probably most memorable are the talents of both Donald Pleasance as Dr. Sam Loomis, who is probably the best horror-movie hero I've seen and shows Donald's acting skills, and Jamie Lee Curtis as her role of Laurie, who returns as the scream queen. Comparatively, this movie is more graphic than the original "Halloween", which virtually didn't show a drop of blood, and DEFINITELY didn't show a dude in a creepy Halloween mask getting smashed between two trucks before a fiery explosion occurred. (Which is one of my favorite moments in the movie!) So yes, "Halloween 2" is a bit more graphic than the original "Halloween", and is just as scary and suspenseful. What I did notice about this movie is the chilling, dream-like atmosphere. I know most slashers have a somewhat earthy element, but there's something about the dark, deserted hallways of the hospital late at night on Halloween that sets an intense and dream-like atmosphere, which seriously fascinated me with the movie, especially considering I didn't pick up on that the last time I saw it. So this movie is able to be scary, graphic and atmospheric all at the same time. Overall, while stylistically it's somewhat different from the original "Halloween", "Halloween 2" is just as good a movie, if not better. For fans of slasher films or horror films in general, especially those who want a movie with a chilling, dream-like atmosphere, "Halloween 2" will be a scream! Pick it up in time for Halloween night, too, so you can enter the dark realm of terror known as the scariest night of the year. Thanks for the time, and peace.』 (Worst sequel ever) ![]() 『I don't see how people love or even like this sequel. The only part of the movie I actually liked was the beginning. It was great how it actually started right where the first one left off but that was it. After that it just went to hell. The ending of this movie was completely ridiculous and I will never watch this movie again. If you want to see a good horror sequel watch Friday the 13th part 2.』 『A KILLER FOLLOWS HIS INJURED TARGET TO THE HOSPITAL ON OCT. 31 IN HADDONFIELD, III.』 『"You can't kill the boogeyman," explains John Carpenter inHalloween, and to prove it he brings Michael Myers back in this handsome but grisly sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasence runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill, and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count and some strange tales about the Druids and pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail.--Sean Axmaker』 『 Halloween II > 『 Halloween II > 『 Halloween 4 - The Return of Michael Myers (Divimax Edition) > 『 Halloween 4 - The Return of Michael Myers (Divimax Edition) > 『 Halloween 5 - The Revenge of Michael Myers (Divimax Edition) > 『 Halloween 5 - The Revenge of Michael Myers (Divimax Edition) > 『 Halloween > 『 Halloween > 『 Halloween III - Season Of The Witch > 『 Halloween III - Season Of The Witch > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Wait Until Dark > 『 Wait Until Dark > 『 How to Steal a Million > 『 How to Steal a Million > 『 The Nun's Story > 『 The Nun's Story > 『 Love in the Afternoon > 『 Love in the Afternoon > 『 Charade > 『 Charade > 『 The Children's Hour >

I was gripped right from the beginning and held spellbound all through it. The final 15 minutes is when the big payoff comes and I remember everyone in the theater screaming for dear life! Truly a masterpiece in suspense and psychological thrills. Here I am 42 years later and this movie has the same effect on me today as it did back then, and this comes after the blood and gore that producers rely on today to scare the bejesus out of us. Pretty poor attempt in my opinion. Audrey was nominated for a well deserved Academy Award but, unfortunately, she lost to the other Miss Hepburn. Nonetheless, this movie has withstood the test of time and is well worth watching. Try watching it from Suzy's (Audreys Character) point of view, after the initial shock has worn off. It is a whole new experience in chills and thrills!!』 (Looking back) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Like so many others, I too love this movie and am pleased with the DVD release. Rather than repeat what others have said, I wanted to add my own little side note: in addition to leaving front doors unlocked, who in the current time would send an eleven year old girl out at night by herself in Manhattan to the Port Authority Bus Station to wait for buses?!? While I was scared for Hepburn's character in that little apartment, I was also scared for the little girl skipping off into the darkness! Also, it would have made more sense to send her to the nearest police station rather than to wait at a bus station in hopes of running into Hepburn's husband - ah well, movies! But don't let that stop you from seeing this movie. It's worth every second of great suspense!』 (Edge Of Your Seat ***Thriller***!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『WAIT UNTIL DARK has become one of my favorite thriller movies next to movies like Dressed to Kill. In it, Audrey Hepburn plays a woman who is learning to live life as a blind person after an accident took her sight. She becomes involved with three shady characters after her husband gets a doll from a woman he met on a flight back home, and now the doll is missing. Anyway, the men want the doll back and will stop at nothing to get it and drive poor Audrey to the brink of insanity! Hepburn plays the role convincingly and the cinematography is really cool. There are moments when there's nothing but pitch-blackness on the screen and so you get a sense of what the main character must be experiencing as she's being terrorized by these thugs! The special features include: Featurette--"A Look In The Dark"--8:35-minute interview with Alan Arkin, who plays the sadistic "Roat," and producer Mel Ferrer, who was married to Hepburn at the time. Theatrical Trailer&Warning-- warning is a voice-over with text that tells audience members not to light up cigarettes in the movie house (wow, they smoked inside the theater back then!)during the pitch dark scenes so it wouldn't take away from the scene. WAIT UNTIL DARK is a must see for fans of scary movies and of course, Hepburn fans. 』 『A photographer's blind wife, trapped in her New York apartment by an evil trio who are ready to murder to retrieve a heroin-filled doll hidden in her apartment, cleverly outwits them. Music by Henry Mancini. Based on the long running Broadway play by Frederick Knott.』 『Audrey Hepburn's last Oscar nomination was for this adaptation of Frederick Knott's famed stage thriller about a blind woman, a con man (Alan Arkin), and a doll full of heroin. Thanks to Hepburn's husband, a photographer who does a good deal of traveling, she's unknowingly come into possession of said doll, which was given to him on a plane by a comely young drug runner who winds up dead. The murderous Arkin, aided by sympathetic henchman Richard Crenna, will let nothing stand in the way of his obtaining it, even if it comes down to assaying multiple "personalities" in order to visit and terrorize Hepburn; Crenna is unwillingly enlisted to help. However, the "world's champion blind lady" (as Hepburn sardonically states) is more than up to the task of defending herself in her basement Manhattan apartment in a heart-stopping climax that to this day still defines the way horror movies with jack-in-the-box psychos are made. Despite the obvious staginess of it all (the entire action takes place in Hepburn's apartment), it still works magnificently, thanks to Hepburn's steely will and Arkin's deadly, sadistic madman. A helpful hint: turn out all the lights when you watch it; theaters back in 1967 did so, killing the guiding lights during the film's last 15 minutes. The witches - Sarandon, Cher and Pfeiffer - are terrific but the devil - Nicholson - is a great example of his letting it all out but not going over the top. Best example is the scene in the church. More than enjoyable and highly recommended.』 『Need someone with demonic dash to portray the Devil? There are only two choices. Old Ned himself. And Jack Nicholson. The Witches of Eastwick to the better actor-and came up with the sleekest, sexiest supernatural comedy/thriller to emerge from this or any other world, earning Nicholson 1987 Best Actor Awards from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. The "witches" are in three modern-day women yearning for Mr. Right in a quaint New England town full of Mr. Uptights. Played glowingly by Cher (Moonstruck), Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo's Oil) and Michelle Pfeiffer (The Age of Innocence), they're lovely enough to tempt even the most jaded netherworld denizen. Conjure up an evening's entertainment with The Witches of Eastwick. As a wolfish womanizer summoned by three bored women in a picturesque New England town, he's sating all of his appetites with a rakish grin. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer play the women who discover their untapped magical powers by accident. The smart and sexy singles, out of place in the conservatism of their village, find happiness, however briefly, in the arms and bed of the libidinous devil, but he's got his own ulterior motives. Miller revels in the sensual display of sex, food, and magic, whipping up a storm of effects that finally get out of hand in an overblown ending. It's a handsome film with strong performances all around, but the mix of anarchic comedy and supernatural horror doesn't always gel and Miller seems to lose the plot in his zeal for cinematic excitement. The performances ultimately keep the film aloft: the hedonistic joy that Nicholson celebrates with every leering gaze and boorish vulgarity is almost enough to make bad form and chauvinism cool.--Sean Axmaker』 『 The Witches of Eastwick (Keepcase) > 『 The Witches of Eastwick (Keepcase) > 『 Death Becomes Her > 『 Death Becomes Her > 『 Practical Magic (Snap Case) > 『 Practical Magic (Snap Case) > 『 Hocus Pocus > 『 Hocus Pocus > 『 Wolf > 『 Wolf > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Psycho (Collector's Edition) > 『 Psycho (Collector's Edition) > 『 The Birds (Collector's Edition) > 『 The Birds (Collector's Edition) > 『 Psycho II / Psycho III / Psycho IV - The Beginning (Triple Feature) > 『 Psycho II / Psycho III / Psycho IV - The Beginning (Triple Feature) > 『 Vertigo (Collector's Edition) > 『 Vertigo (Collector's Edition) > 『 Rear Window (Collector's Edition) > 『 Rear Window (Collector's Edition) > 『 Psycho >

First of all, why does Janet Leigh have to steal 40Gs from her boss' business? Why break the law? My version of this movie sees Janet Leigh not as a thief on the lam from the law but rather as ... a real estate agent. (Yeah, yeah that's the ticket!) A real estate agent out in the boondocks looking for a way to make a quick buck off some funky old property. Get the picture? ("Yes, we see.") There's anorexic, skinny-butt Janet driving along one backroad after another, dollar signs for eyeballs, and, lo and behold, she comes to -- that's right, that's right! -- THE BATES MOTEL! Smirking, she says to herself: "Lemme go in and see what kind of a schnook owns *this* dump." So she goes in, starts talking to Norman; next thing you know she's got Norman signing a no-interest, balloon payment, one-born-every-minute mortgage contract. Norman, also anorexic, financially as well as physically, naturally can't come up with the jack and in a few months, like all natural born schnooks, he defaults on the mortgage, declares bankruptcy and the Bates Motel becomes a diner -- MOM'S HOME COOKIN'. Norman, reduced to the role of mere employee, serves famished, bisexual truck drivers in drag (Norman, that is, not the bisexual truck drivers). Whilst Marty Balsam ("Mister Ar-bur-gas"), stopping for a quick bite, has a gas attack after eating a Mexican tortilla allegedly cooked between the thighs of Carmen Miranda -- AND SUES! Norman and Janet decide to bump off Ar-bur-gas by placing a Chiquita banana, posthumously autographed by Errol Flynn, at the top of the stairs. Ar-bur-gas slips, falls, survives --AND SUES AGAIN! Now Janet and Norman decides to convert MOM'S HOME COOKIN' into a combination dinner theatre, law office and cockatoo sanctuary. The first play they put on is "I Remember Big Fat Mama," with Oprah Winfrey as B.F. Mama and Anthony Perkins as her still-anorexic but game concubine. The play flops, the dinner theatre sues itself, peace is declared in our time and Alfred Hitchcock's rear end is replaced by a United Fruit box.』 『Alfred Hitchcock's landmark masterpiece of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. No one knows that better than Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), the ill-fated traveler whose journey ends in the notorious "shower scene." First a private detective, then Marion's sister (Vera Miles) searches for her, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax where the mysterious killer is finally revealed.』 『At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. Tod Browning was obviously trying to paint them in a positive light, he was trying to show that these people are human beings just like the rest of us and should not be treated any differently. This is a great, classic film that focuses around characters rather than plot. That's not to see there isn't a plot, far from it, but in my opinion when a film focuses on the characters its usually a sign that it's going to be good. I don't want to ruin too much of the plot, but the gist of it is that there's a group of sideshow performers, or freaks, that have formed a community for themselves in a traveling circus. One of them, a dwarf named Hans, falls in love with a more typical human being and things spiral from there. The cinematography is mostly basic but there's a few scenes that are actually quite sophisticated. The film is is a social criticism on humanity's morality, or lack thereof, when dealing with so-called "freaks". It's a little slow in some parts, but the charactrs suck you in and the film is great.』 (A curiosity in the history of filmaking-no more,no less) ![]() ![]() 『Freaks, released in February 1932,was and is a title that says as much about itself as it does about its' subject matter. It was a curiosity then and remains so to this day.Judged on its' merits as a film, and all that that implies,it comes up far short of its'intended goals. Browning had previously worked with Lon Chaney who was THE master of grotesquery in his characterizations. He also had directed the horror hit Dracula the year previously.Mix this with the so called "Great Depression" and the studios desperation to keep their heads above water and looking for new ideas to intice patrons into the theatres, and you have the movie Freaks. The movies' centrepiece is two midgets,Hans and Frieda(Harry and Daisy Earles-real life brother and sister). Both are part of the "freak" section of the circus performers and are engaged to be married.Enter trapeze artist Cleopatra(Olga Baclanova)who catches the eye of little Hans. She humours and eggs him on by flirting openly with him, much to Frieda's chagrin and embarrassement.Cleopatra however goes for the circus strongman Hercules(Henry Victor) and they both take great delight in humiliating Hans and the other "freaks" frequently. When Cleopatra learns that Hans has alot of money she talks him into marrying her.Frieda tries to tell Hans it's a sham, but he won't listen and goes ahead with the marriage.During a reception it becomes apparent to Hans things aren't what they should be when Hercules kisses Cleopatra openly. And when the "freaks" in attendance chant that they "accept her"(Cleopatra),she becomes enraged at the thought and tells them to take a hike.During the reception she had slipped a poison into Hans drink-starting early to get rid of him and collect on his money. She carries him back to the wagon and a doctor is summoned,as she feigns innocence. She convinces the doctor but the spurned"freaks" are getting wise to the situation and keep a close watch.Sure enough when Cleopatra is alone she slips poison into Hans medicine.Hans however has gotten wise himself and spits out each dose when Cleo isn't looking.Hans has had it and decides, along with his friends,to take care of cheating/murdering Cleopatra and Hercules. When Hercules goes after his ex girlfriend Venus, who threatened to take what she knew about the two of them to the police, the "freaks" are right there. On a rain soaked, mud filled ground Hercules tries to crawl away with a knife in his side from the approaching threat, but he is eventually overtaken. At the same time Cleopatra runs screaming into the night from her wagon only to be followed by more "freaks",who get their woman. The movie ends as it had begun, with people standing around a large square enclosure, inside which is the former Cleopatra, now a "freak" and a much deformed "duck woman". This slight tale of revenge was banned in a few countries around the world due to its' graphic and exploitative subject matter. It was released ,pulled,re-released again and again(parred down),but it still received terrible reviews and bombed at the box office.Actual circus performers("freaks") as you can see were "used" heavily in the movie for authenticity. You have pinheads,a half woman-half man, more than one armless woman, siamese twins, the living torso, bird girl,a dwarf,a legless dwarf, and several others. What brings the movie down isn't so much the obviously contrived script of righting a wrong but the poor acting involved. Most of the "freaks" did fairly well all things considered, but Olga Baclanova as Cleo and her brutish boyfriend Hercules played by Henry Victor, troll for new depths in bad acting.Olga plays it way,way over the top and Victor comes along to push down them both down the slippery slope on the other side. You actually wonder what took them so long to do them in! On the other side of the coin is Venus(Leila Hyams) and Phroso(Wallace Ford),who save the film from total oblivion.Rose Dione as Madame Tetrallini also manages to make the most of her on screen time. Sure one feels an empathy towards these men and women, the underbelly of the circus world, but it is an empathy that Browning unnecessarily pounds home. Not only does he show fellow "normal" circus perfomers shunning them(not generally the case in real life)just to achieve a modicum of a plot, the re-issue prologue REALLY pounds home the sympathy message by its' sermonization. At the end of the day however there just is not enough good to overcome the bad in this film.It was a brave experiment on Browning's and MGM's parts, but it didn't come off. As you know the film we see today is a cut down version of the original.Unless some archive somewhere turns up a longer copy, this is the film posterity will be left with.Having said that though,I do not believe this film would have been helped by the extra footage.I think it would just have prolonged the agony and possibly made it even worse than what we have today. The film was revived some 30 years or more ago by a film enthusiast and caught on with other film devotees due to its' unsual subject matter, which caused MGM to eventually rustle through its' holdings, dig it out and dust off its' copies. It was re-released On VHS in 1990 and now it is on DVD. The DVD's print here is of good quality and sound. The sound in fact has been improved since its' 1990 release on tape. You can now understand most of the dialogue, though some spoken by the circus performers are still a little hard to catch. This release contains three alternate endings to the film,a re-issue prologue,a commentary and two featurettes, one on Tod Browning and one on the movie itself. In conclusion Freaks,an interesting curiosity-yes;an experiment not fulfilled or succesful-yes.An example of good film making?....definitely not.』 (great movie, bad dvd) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I adore this movie,it's cheesy, but classic cheesy, and it's filled to the brim with actual historical sideshow specialties, how could you not love it?!
