Not yet released Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (An interesting and suspenseful sci-fi thriller) 『I didn't see a lot of hype for this film nor did I have any strong desire to see it aside from it's intriguing premise. I finally caught it recently and have to say I really enjoyed it. The story begins simple enough but as the film progresses it becomes more involving and mysterious. A unique Twilight Zone-esque tale with fine performances and creepy moments. It's not on the level of Donnie Darko but it's still a fine film. Recommended.』
(Aspect ratio?) 『Are they sure about this 1.77/1 aspect ratio? This is absurd. What are we living in the 80s? Warner Brothers are idiots.』
(Interesting At the Very Least...) 『I'm going to keep this review short and sweet, as I feel other 4-star reviews have made any point I could make already.
This movie was nothing if not interesting and mind-boggling. It kept me guessing and in the end...I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd just witnessed and how much I want to see it again so I can study it further.
No, it was not the best sci-fi film ever...not even the best by the director, Richard Kelly. But, what it was is an engrossing, interesting, and (although it was based on a short story and Twilight Zone episode) original film, produced in an era where run-of-the-mill actions and romantic comedies rule the screen. And the acting wasn't too shabby either. Cameron Diaz's fake Southern accent could be a little much at times, but I think that was the intention. And Frank Langella was phenomenal.
Plain and simply, rent this before you buy it. It is a movie you'll likely either 'get' or loathe ravenously. But you should at least give it a chance. Yes, the plot is a bit incoherent at times, but it's not supposed to be an easy movie...it's cerebral and visual. It makes you think.
I'll be adding it to my blu-ray collection for sure, as I already have Kelly's other 2 films, Donnie Darko and Southland Tales.』
(Abysmal...worst adaptation EVER of a Richard Matheson work) 『Based on an excellent short story, this one gets the Raspberry Award for worst adaptation. Matheson has been incredibly lucky over the years in that he has inspired some amazing adaptations . . . which, in my opinion, points to the strength of the source material. I went in with high hopes with "The Box" given the strong cast, but this one is a Class-A stinker, something way less than the sum of its parts. It's unfortunate.』
(Not What I Expected!!!) 『At first, the movie started off really well. I loved that it took place in the 70's, and around Christmas. It was toward the middle of the movie that it became confusing, and added supernatural references. I'm still not sure what Mr. Steward and his employees were supposed to be. I couldn't tell if they were aliens, or people under mind control. Norma and Arthur Lewis receive a black box with a red button on it. If they push it; they will receive a million dollars, and someone dies. Once the button is pushed, they must deal with the consequences. If you were given the opportunity for a million dollars, would you push the button on THE BOX!!!』 『Push a red button on a little black box, get a million bucks cash. Just like that, all of Norma (Diaz) and Arthur Lewis's (Marsden) financial problems will be over. But there's a catch, according to the strange visitor (Lagella) who placed the box on the couple’s doorstep. Someone, somewhere – someone they don’t know – will die. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden play a couple confronted by agonizing temptation yet unaware they're already part of an orchestrated an – for them and us – mind-blowing chain of events.』 『Director Richard Kelly has crafted yet another evocative, spectacular, maddening film guaranteed to provoke passionate love-it or hate-it responses. Though far more straightforward than his previous cult favorites,Donnie DarkoorSouthland Tales,The Boxis crammed just as full of stunning visuals and ambiguous metaphysics. Norma and Arthur Lewis (Cameron Diaz ofCharlie's Angelsand James Marsden ofX-Men) find a plainly wrapped package on their doorstep one day. Inside is a strange box with a large, red button--and if they press that button, explains a courtly but alarming-looking gentleman (Frank Langella,Frost/Nixon), they will receive a million dollars… and someone they don't know will die. This is but the starting point for an increasingly creepy tale, featuring eye-popping wallpaper, spontaneous nosebleeds, allusions to Jean-Paul Sartre, overly attentive library patrons, boxes of water, warehouses full of light, and a bell-ringing Santa Clausstanding in the middle of a road. Some of it makes sense, some of it doesn't, but the person who's going to love this movie won't care. The Box's true power lies in the slow accumulation of dizzying hypnotic images and a tangible sense of unease and anticipation. Kelly aspires to capture the beauty and terror of existence on film; even if he doesn't succeed--and every viewer will have to decide that for himself or herself--his sheer ambition is remarkable.--Bret Fetzer』

Nothing like this had happened before and it hasn't happened since. These two seemingly invincible beasts brought Britain's plans for an East African railway to a dead halt and literally stopped the greatest colonial empire on earth from one of its grandest engineering feats, absolutely cold. A bridge-building engineer, John Patterson, aided by an acclaimed wild game hunter, Remington, set out to find and kill these demons that the African's called "shaitaini" or "Devils of the Night." These two unbelievably cunning lions, "The Ghost" and "The Darkness," set their sights on the two men who were hunting them. Some movies make little impression when they are based on a true story but this one certainly leaves a lasting imprint. Watch this movie and see for yourself.』
(Ghost and the Darkness) 『It was a Christmas gift for my fiance. He hadn't seen it since he was younger and couldn't find it anywhere.』
(The Ghost and the Darkness) 『Wow. This movie keeps you glued to your seat and is hard to believe that it's a true story! I highly recommend it, but it's not be suitable for children because of the violence. It's definitely in my top rated movies!』
(Entertaining thriller based on a true account) 『I always liked this movie. The characters are well-developed, interesting, and although this is essentially a horror story, it has it's humorous moments. It's overall great entertainment. I think of it as "Jaws on Land."』
(Love this movie!) 『Great film. Val Kilmer is very good. Michael Douglas is a little weak but not enough so to ruin the film. Exciting true story.』 『EAST AFRICA, 1896. TWO LIONS ON A MAN-EATING RAMPAGE HAVE SHUT DOWN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RAILWAY. BIG-GAME HUNTER REMINGTON AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER PATTERSON SET OUT TO STOP THESE UNSTOPPABLE MONSTERS. BUT IN THIS ASTONISHING TALE OF MAN VS. BEAST, THE HUNTERS BECOME THE HUNTED.』 『Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Spielberg (specifically toJaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one.--Tom Keogh』

Its release on Blu Ray disc was inevitable. See Pinhead and the other Cenobites in high definition! All other cheap knock-offs notwithstanding, I'll sleep much better at night when "Hellbound: Hellraiser 2" is also released on Blu Ray.』
(Blu-Ray Version. VG PQ for age.) 『I liked the later HellRaiser releases, but never saw the first film until now. Very Good horror movie.
The Blu-Ray quality was better than I expected. The special features included HellRaiser trailers, that were not in Blu Ray, and the same scene comparison between the Blu Ray scenes and standard scenes was incredible. Dropped to 4 stars only because the Blu Ray is lesser quality than today's releases (like Dexter). Probably not a fair comparison.
Story: Acting was very good, and the story, given it's unbelievable nature, was much better than most horror movies. That is, it is horrific, rather than silly. I'll purchase the sequels, when they are released in Blu Ray.』
(Only One of the Best Horror Flicks of All Time!) 『For me, this is second to Hellraiser II, but since it is on Blu-Ray, I had to jump on it. The conversion was done quite well. Even made the wife jump when fleshless Frank grabbed Julia for the first time :)』
(Classic Horror Movie!!) 『I give this a five star rate review due to its horrifying scenes. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and to this day its still the same as ever before all blood and guts wit the digitally remastered bluray dvd it looks so crisp and sureal. A must have for all horror collectors!!』
(Very polished Blu-Ray of a horror masterpiece!) 『
A fellow by the name of Frank (Sean Chapman) has brought home with him an unusal puzzle-box from a foreign country as he tries to solve it as it has great dark powers to it. It unlocks another dimension which is similar to hell where a group of S&M demons called Cenobites lead by Pinhead (Doug Bradley) who give victims pain and pleasure then they torture and kill Frank. Years later his brother Larry (Andrew Robinson) and newlywed wife Julia (Claire Higgins) as they move in Frank's house as it may seem disgusting at first but they rearrange the place a bit to fit their tastes. However when Larry spills a little blood in a little accident, he unknowingly unleashes Frank back from the dead as a skinless monster who desires Julia and that the wife was once a lover of the tragic figure as she falls for him again. She seduces men secretly then kills them so he can absorb their blood in order to be human again and free of the curse he's suffering, the daughter Kirsty (Ashley Lawrence) discovers what horrible secrets lie within the house and makes a bargain with the Cenobites.
Scary, masterful and gory horror fantasy from writer-director Clive Barker is based on his novel "The Hellbound Heart". Here is an imaginative and original movie in a era of big slasher flicks as it was a breath of fresh air for it had an imaginative yet original idea about demons and S&M including the pleasures of pain&suffering. The film has an HP Lovecraft style with sexual peversion and the occult to create one of the most original and startling horror movies of all time, it even pushed the limits of torture and gore of it's time much like today's "Hostel" and "Saw" movies did as it nearly got an X rating. It's still an atmospheric and disturbing movie that created a memorable horror icon named Pinhead who joined with the likes of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Jigsaw, Leatherface and many more as one of those classic horror icons. The creature and cenobite make-up effects are very well done including the gore despite the acting not being that great and has an amazing score by Christopher Young, it's a must see for horror buffs.
This Blu-Ray has stunning picture and quality sound with great extras like audio commentary, interviews, featurettes, behind the scenes galleries, Trailers, TV Spots, storyboard galleries, poster and advertising galleries and DVD-Rom Blu-Ray content.』 『Clive Barker has unleashed a nightmare like no other; a deliciously depraved vision of hell on earth that changed the face of horror forever. Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and Doug Bradley -- as the iconic "Pinhead" star in this extreme saga of leave after death, pleasure beyond pain, an ancient puzzle box and the legion of Cenobites that feed upon human suffering. Now for the first time ever Hell Comes to Blu Ray.
Winner of 2009 Reaper Award for Best Re-mastering.』 『Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain fromDirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror.--Jeff Shannon』

The movie itself is great the main thing I remember as a kid was Count Dracula calling the little girl a "Bitch" still makes me laugh each time I watch it, sad the movie didnt do that well at the box office back in the day.
This movie is great for people who love 80's movies and horror this is like the lost boys meets all the classic monsters such as wolfman, the mummy, dracula, frankenstien&the creature from the black lagoon.
The film is suitable for kids from 8 years up but there is some swearing in the special features..

It's only a snapshot of that nightmarish winter, but wow what a snapshot it is. If you are a Crispin Glover fan thinking this is some weird gore-fest, forget about it. This is a (not exactly, ha) historical retelling of the Forlorn Hope party that set out in a pathetic attempt to rescue the ruined remains of the westward immigrant farmers from Ohio who had a really, really bad time of their journey.
It's an amazing achievement. You will forget Crispin Glover is in this movie, as he disappears into his role as William Foster. The rest of the cast is just fantastic and I expect great things will come to them. Mr. Eddy, I don't know your name in real life, but you should go slap Brad Pitt and show him how it's done.
Yeah, I was a little annoyed at the abrupt and historically incorrect ending, but seriously, who cares? This was a movie than needed to be made, and it has been made extremely well.
Thanks to all involved.』
(A TV miniseries is required to cover the entire event...I feel.) 『This movie is about a final, desperate attempt by OTHER members of the Donner Party to try to cross Donner Pass close to the summit of the Sierra Nevade range in the tough winter of 1846/47. It's not about The Donner Family or the entire journey of the Donner /Reed wagon train...or the Oregon/CA trail leading up to starting from Springsfield, Ill. It's a good, well acted movie starring Crispin Glover, among others. A better title would have been "The Snow Shoe Party" which represents the last ditch attempts by 15 starving volunteers of the Breen/Murphy/Graves folks at the eastern end of the lake site. Apparently the term of the "Forlorn Hope" was NOT what they called themselves but is a fictional title given to them by an author many years after the event. If you are interested in the history of the Donner Party...I recommend the 1992 Ric Burns PBS "American Experience" documentary. It's so well done I watch it over and over...even though it too has it's flaws.
I'm not a fan of Made for TV movies (this movie is NOT one...I think? Straight to DVD maybe?) But if someone like HBO can give this story the treatment they gave "Band of Brothers" and start the story from the beginning...in Springfield,Ill all they way through the entire event...now that would be special! Why? because when you read books like "Ordeal By Hunger" you come to realize that the Donner Party suffered through so much way BEFORE they even reached the Tahoe area.』
(Well Deserved Dramatic Approach to True Horror) 『The obvious approach for a film about THE DONNER PARTY, one of the most infamous stories of deadly misadventure in American history, would be horror. But in T.J. Martin's THE DONNER PARTY, the historic event gets a well deserved dramatic approach that makes it all the more unsettling. Like most dramatic retellings, the ultimate end is known, but the journey, quite literally in this case, is more important than the end result. Martin's screenplay is a thriller focusing on the psychological ordeal of starvation and extreme weather. Martin takes liberties creating dramatic tension between members of the party, but otherwise the story is painstakingly accurate. Film at the actual Donner Pass in only 12 days, the stark beauty of a seemingly tranquil winter forest is countered with the increasing desperation only those on the brink of survival can feel. Personal conflicts are barely kept in check, and facades slowly start to wear the longer the party goes without provisions. It seems everyone has the eyes of a villain, and is trying to figure out who might turn on the rest. It's an impressive feat considering most of the action is either walking, or sitting around a fire, requiring the actors to emote their desperation with gravitas. The cannibalism is not glorified; everyone conveys a mixture of disgust and desperation in the few scenes where flesh is eaten. While the entire cast does a respectable job, and Crispin Glover is refreshingly cast against type, the standout performance is by Mark Boone, Jr. Boone (BATMAN BEGINS, MEMENTO) is usually typecast as a thug. But in THE DONNER PARTY he is the moral compass of the story, and does it well. In a pivotal moment, with very few words and tight camera work, Boone steals the movie.』
(Forlorn Hope in the Sierra Nevada) 『This movie, with some moderately well-known actors in the cast, never seems to have had a general release before going to DVD. As such, and strictly speaking, it is not about the Donner Party itself, trapped high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains over the winter of 1847-47. The plot really focuses on an element of that party, who called themselves the Forlorn Hope, and made a desperate gamble to walk out of the mountains on snowshoes: They took sparingly of supplies, hoping to leave more for those remaining behind, and set out for the nearest settlement down in the foothills below. In this version of the story, the Forlorn Hope includes an older man, Franklin Graves (Mark Boone, Jr.) and his two daughters, William Eddy (Clayne Crawford) and his hired man, William Foster (Crispin Gover), the best hunter among the party, who left his own wife and child behind. Charles Stanton (Christian Kane) has come from Sutter's fort with a meager amount of supplies, and Louis, a Mexican-Indian muleteer: they will guide the rest of the party to safety - or so it is hoped. But their hopes slowly unravel, in the face of misery, starvation, madness - and murder.
Alas, this account is not strictly accurate in historical detail: There had been no food cached for them by Stanton, farther down the mountains. There was no drawing of lots, for one of the party to be killed in order to feed the rest - although it was discussed, at least once, according to survivors. There were two murders committed during the ordeal of the Forlorn Hope, but not in the way depicted in this account. The sense of despair, and the slow dissolving of so-called civilized norms are probably fairly accurate, as well as incidents such as Eddy's wife hiding a portion of dried meat in his pack, and of how he was able to bring down a deer to feed the survivors. Something of the bleakness of their experience is reflected in the colors - in that it seems there is barely any color at all. The snow is white, the trees seem black against the sky, their trunks are gray. The characters are dressed all in dark colors - seemingly only a splash of blood now and again makes any color at all.
I was actually quite interested in reviewing this DVD, having written a novel, about a pioneer wagon-train party being stranded under the same circumstances and in the same place - To Truckee's Trail - a party which proceeded the Donner Party by several years, but which survived their ordeal, and emerged from it with all members alive and in good health. So I watched this with a an especially critical eye for period detail - which was excellent. With regard to absolute historical fidelity, there were some liberties taken, as noted above. This is a movie which does manage to be psychologically accurate in relating a true story - but at the end, having put the characters and the audience through a wringer, concludes without any other resolution or insight other than having demonstrated what people are capable of doing to survive. Perhaps that was the point - but I would have liked to have been drawn into knowing a deeper knowledge about each character.
One final curiosity: "The Donner Party" was shot on location in and around Truckee, California, where the original Donner Party was stranded, and along the trail followed by the Forlorn Hope.』 『Based on the harrowing true story,The Donner Partypicks up after William Hastings steers a wagontrain, known as The Donner Party, off course by promising a shorter route to California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. After several early snowstorms, the emigrants and its leaders (Crispin Glover and Clayne Crawford) find themselves trapped, freezing and without any source of food. A small group is formed, nicknamed The Forlorn Hope, to try and reach California and organize a rescue party. The threat of death and imminent starvation dissolves the group’s camaraderie as they are forced sacrifice one another as a source of nourishment. Surviving only on the flesh of the fallen members of their party, the remaining travelers must weigh their consciences against their will to survive.』

Granted, it's the type of movie you'd expect to see lampooned on "Mystery Science Theater 3000," but I have to wonder how many of its detractors have actually seen the film. Most low-budget horror/sci-fi flicks of this type aren't worth watching once, let alone worth owning. But "KOTS" isn't one of them - it's well-made, tightly edited, and guided by a surprisingly good script. It's not "Citizen Kane," of course, but it's far better than most movies of its kind.
For those of us who do enjoy "KOTS", Shout Factory's DVD is long overdue. Not only do we finally have a good transfer, but there are some great extras, including a commentary track, a collection of home movies shot during the production, and a revealing interview with Captain Kitsch himself, William Shatner. Considering I only paid a few dollars more for this edition than I did for Goodtime's bare-bones release a few years ago, it's well worth the price.
If you're in the mood for a good scare and tired of bogus-looking CGI monsters, "KOTS" is definitely worth a look. The effects in this movie look real because they ARE real - those are real spiders crawling all over the place (and all over the actors!) And if you've ever considered owning the film, make sure you snatch this edition up before it's gone.』
(This one is the king of all when it comes to spider flicks!) 『This is my number one killer spider flick!!! I like it better than 'The Giant Spider Invasion'; although that one does come close to being number one. The reason for 'Kingdom of the Spiders' being number one is because its decades old and still manages to make whoever i watch it with, JUMP!..and of course, there's always cringing involved. it was fun seeing my wife get scared! There's one scene when my wife's eyes were as wide as they could possibly be. haha. ***SPOILER*** That scene is when the farmer's wife is so frighten of a spider dangling from her hand that she picks up a gun and shoots her hand off!!! Now that is expressing fear, folks!!! I can only imagine how audiences back then responded to such a shocking scene like that one. A Horror flick made as simple as this one and can bring such scare from its viewers, has mad respect from me. No CGI here folks. We're dealing with real spiders and we're seeing real spiders die on film. Yes, those were the days when animals, in this case, "critters", as some call big bugs, died from the hands of actors/actresses. This was quite common in well-known films back then. 'Cannibal Holocaust' and other films that are notorious for this nature, weren't the first and only ones to exercise this as a shock factor to play on ones emotions. I had as much fun with 'Kingdom of the Spiders' as I did watching 'The BIRDS'. Plus, it's always fun watching William (pimp) Shatner play on the ladies as always! haha. Kudos to Shout Entertainment for putting out such a great edition! The special features and original artwork is greatly appreciated.』
(Fantastic transfer and a fun movie with some great extras.) 『This Special Edition version of Kingdom Of The Spiders is far superior to the full frame version that I bought a few years ago and the Bill Shatner interview is a must for all the Shatner fans out there, he is an entertaining storyteller. Only thing left is to release this on Blu-Ray with a Hi-Def transfer and it would get a 5 star from me. 』
(KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS) 『A friend let me borrow this movie. I thought Kingdom of the spiders was pretty good up until the ending where real spiders were killed in the movie. That is what I hated about this movie. No Animals of any kind should be killed for entertainment. Shame on the movie makers of this movie to have done that. I would of destroyed this movie if it wasn't my friend's I strongly recommend that if you are an Animal lover to not even bother buying his movie. Tell your friends to do the same. (We were all children one day) 『Sorry.. didn't work for me... I certainly get the point though. This life is nothing if not predictable in its utterly cruel way of recurring behavioral patterns. The key-words nowadays are "cool" and "hip" forms of parenting, in a ridiculous attempt to identify with the up-and-coming generations of alienated youths. Boundaries are blurred. Parents abandon their stoic posture and yield to hedonism, refuting egregiously their years of experience. When purposeful regression takes center stage, all hell will break loose. So, when haughty, hormone-driven adolescents see that they have their affection-deprived parents on their knees, a greater sense of already-gargantuan entitlement takes over. And this extends into the every sphere of life, especially in social gatherings, and even more in the classroom, where hiding under the surface of blatant infantile behavior lies intensely insecure thought processes. Anyway, the fabric of school tries to institute a neo-superego, but since the primordial one has been vanquished, why should this one be allowed to prevail??? It shouldn't, that's why students just don't care, and their parents are too afraid of losing their children completely (a cataclysmic death of self as well, since children are the redefinition of their rebirth) and simply don't choose to emphasize the importance of education. The movie tried to take the side of the kids, giving everyone a brief background that tries to be inspiring... it vilifies some of them as well so we know who to cheer against (there is an ineffectual attempt to humanize the girl with the scythe by showing her brush with a potential child molester). Now, the solution in this case is pure fascism, and it is a very moronic way of looking at life. The reason we have so many school shootings and whatnot in the US is because the culture causes a spiritual suffocation and death, there is no room for negotiation, there are no shades of gray, so extreme behaviors are adopted to get the point across. Here, it's the same thing, adopting radical dogmas for a much deeper-seeded behavioral issue that derives from the adults' lack of insight into self and how to raise their kids... bah... I usually try to stick with the story in my reviews, not focusing on technical aspects. Unfortunately, I must comment, the acting was very poor.. I love to be drawn into the realm of the film, but I simply couldn't because none of it rang true or believable. Anyway, in essence, an unnecessary statement which echoes the dumb way the world perceives its problems, and the primitive way it intends to resolve them.』
(Battle Royale: Director's Cut (Collector's Edition)) 『This uncut version of movie is finally available in the US. I had to buy it on ebay. What a trip, it's like Lord of the Flies on Steroids. This movie holds nothing back. I highly recommend this movie if you can withstand seeing extreme violence between kids. Well written and highly entertaining, enjoy. It's a shame Part 2 is not nearly as good.』
(Are you kidding me? This is trash.) 『This movie has an almost perfect rating? Wow. Truly mind-boggling.
What to say about this film?
Well, it sucked in almost every way possible. Despite the award nominations it garnered in Japan, the soundtrack, screenplay (can't speak for the novel), acting, action scenes, realism... everything basically... it all sucked. The acting is overplayed and jerky, but never convincing. In the film, guns seem to have the accuracy and lethality of banana peels thrown by a blind midget. Kids wave submachine guns about while firing in full automatic at targets five feet away, and miraculously miss for fifty consecutive shots. Teenage girls absorb three seconds' worth of fire, but remain standing while their faces contort in ludicrous dramatic fashion before they collapse (or dispatch their foe, last second, with a karate move, before collapsing). Is there any purpose in sitting for two hours and watching young actors pretend to shoot and slash each other non-stop in increasingly contrived and unrealistic ways?
Are we really supposed to care about Nanahara (or whoever) and the others after a couple corny flashback scenes? Are we supposed to 'learn' something, or find the movie's concept thought-provoking? I have no idea. After twenty minutes, I was skipping forward in little chunks, and managed to watch the entire thing in about under an hour. The only reason I made it to the end is because I wanted to at least have 'seen' the movie I paid for.
Honestly, the high rating on this movie baffles me. Maybe it's a big joke to which I'm not privy? In that case, the joke's on me. Do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake: don't waste your time, money, or brain cells on this stupid piece of garbage.』
(Battle Royale... Like Schoolhouse Rock Meets Dawn of the Dead) 『Battle Royale: 10/10: Another classic is born. A fantastic combination of classical music and ultra-violence like a Japanese Clockwork Orange. Here is one Japanese film the major studios will not be remaking anytime soon.
The plot consists of a junior high school class sent to a deserted island, given weapons that vary in usefulness, and are ordered to kill each other. Oh and they have those exploding collars that are ubiquitous in sci-fi films today so if they don't kill all their classmates everyone dies.
The actors are actual kids and the film turns the bloody up to eleven. Add in child suicide, child prostitution, patricide, and worst of all basketball and you have yourself a winner.
Battle Royale falls solidly in the category of Dawn of the Dead or Kill Bill where it transcends its obvious pulp and horror appeal and says larger things about life as a whole.
But who am I kidding non-stop action, hot chicks in schoolgirl outfits, very dark humor and a great classical music score. Kind of like She's All That if Freddy Prinze Jr. killed a classmate every two minutes then had his head blown off by remote control. Throw in Anna Paquin dismembering Rachael Leigh Cooke with a fondue fork and that should give you the picture.
Man that movie would rule Sorry went all fan boy there for a minute. Battle Royale has deep things to say about society and is an important landmark film. [...].
』 『With the Japanese currently leading the way in thought-provoking cinematic violence, it's only fitting that Kinji Fukasaku'sBattle Royaleis being touted as aClockwork Orangefor the 21st century. Based on the novel by Koshun Takami, the film opens with a series of fleeting images of unruly Japanese schoolchildren, whose bad behavior provides a justification for the "punishments" that will ensue. Once the prequel has been dispensed with, the classmates are drugged and awaken on an island where they find they have been fitted with dog collars that monitor their every move. Instructed by their old teacher ("Beat" Takeshi) with the aid of an upbeat MTV-style video, they are told of their fate: after an impartial lottery they have been chosen to fight each other in a three-day, no-rules contest, the "Battle Royale." Their only chance of survival is through the death of all their classmates.
Some pupils embrace their mission with zeal, while others simply give up or try to become peacemakers and revolutionaries. However, the ultimate drive for survival comes from the desire to protect the one you love.Battle Royaleworks on many different levels, highlighting the authorities' desperation to enforce law and order and the alienation caused by the generation gap. Whether you consider the film an important social commentary or simply watch it for the adrenaline-fueled violence, this is set to become cult viewing for the computer game generation and beyond.--Nikki Disney』

Its both a marvelous compilation and restoration of one of the greatest film series ever made. It includes two films not from the Universal series---"The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", and I have to agree with the gentleman who provided the commentary on "The Adventures" that I also thought it was the best of all the 14 films. Some of the episodes I hadn't seen in years, such as "The Pearl of Death" and "Pursuit to Algiers." In watching them again, it not only brought back fond memories, but really made me appreciate the talents of Basile Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. While I'll never like Bruce's characterization of Watson as a bumbling but well-intentioned buffoon, I'll have to admit that I was deeply touched when he sang "Loch Lomond" in "Pursuit" (and did it very well!). As for Rathbone, he was truly suited for his role---elegant, athletic, and energetic. He depicted Holmes, however, as more of an adventurer than the famous man of deductive reasoning, and as a consequence, he would blunder into more harrowing, dramatic escapes that a deductive mind would be more inclined to foresee and avoid. Nevertheless, he was truly a great Holmes. A great Holmes, but alas, not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes. That honor will always belong to the great Jeremy Brett. Unfortunately, Rathbone's character of Holmes bears no more resemblance to the author's version than Bruce's preposterous creation of Watson. While I enjoyed the series very much, it makes me incredibly sad that Hollywood did not trust two of the finest actors who ever played the roles to actually perform scripts that were actual reenactments of Conan Doyle's stories and set in Victorian times. It would have been wonderful to have had such film depictions to compare with the wonderful Granada series of Brett's that was made in the 1980's and 1990's. Alas, such a thing will never be.』

Joss is a fn genius. The cast grows up- I think fans get stuck in the past and don't want to accept a dif. buffy/Xan/wil etc. I think N.F (Caleb) does a remarkable job- a new generation 'mayor'- and 'Lies mY Parents told mE' is one of the best Es EVER. -------------EVERRRRRRRRRRRR. Sad it's over but happy with how it ended here. :)』
(A Fine Last Season) 『A Great end to one of my favorite shows I must say Buffy is one of the few show out of the many I have watched that gave me a finale that I was left satisfied, I Mean very satisfied where even in the end where there we're questions unanswered they we're answered in a way. And the last frame will have you smiling and satisfied that you invested all this time to a great show few shows can say they have as great as an end as Buffy but they don't so definitely get this one!』
(THE SEVENTH AND FINAL SEASON GOES OUT WITH A BANG.....) 『So it all comes to end, and boy does it ever! Season 7, the final season of Buffy goes out with a real bang, though not on the level of perfection that Whedon achieved at the end of Season 5, but close enough. Season 5 was supposed to be the end. Seasons 6 and 7 were spared by UPN, and Joss Whedon and crew were given the green light. So this is essentially the second ending of the series. And As always, there seems to be that one episode that knocks your socks off and creates an instant classic, this one being "Conversations with Dead People" This one ranks with Hush, Once more with Feeling, and other classic episodes, abliet more subtley. Overall for the first half of the season you do not get a villain more terrifying then Kaleb being controlled by the first. It looks real bad for the scooby gang, and it gets worse. He treats them like rag dolls for a good part of the series. Ultimatley however, there are two vital connections that make this final season so important, The First, or the first evil. Willow and Buffy in and of themselves have thrown the balance out of life and death out of sync, and the first wants to teach everyone but, especially Buffy, a lesson about messing with the balance. Overall and exciting, sobering season that will leave you breathless, excited, but maybe, depending, not all together satisfied. But Joss does it better then anyone, and in the link of all seven seasons, your eyes will be glued to the screen. Great TV. "Chosen" rocked!!!! The DVD package is solid, and packed with great extras, including easter eggs, and the commentaries and documentaries are spot on. This is a wondeful DVD, and a wonderful tribute to this series. For Many of us, this is where the series ended before it became a comic book for season 8, I prefere to remember it the way it was.

(A Great End to a Great Series.) 『A delightful wrap up to one of the best series ever to hit television. Whedon continues to provide witty dialogue, quick plots, dynamic characters, and a storyline that keeps you guessing.』
(OMG... What Happend???) 『OK... First let me say I'm a die hard Buffy fan. Every other season was amazing and had me literally jumping outa my seat with excitement, but season seven was just terrible for its usual fun and fresh seasons. I think the best way to voice my opinion is to list the things I disliked about the season 7:
The "Big Bad" of the season wasnt so big or bad at all. For the first evil and sole reason for sin on earth, this villian absolutely sucked. He could not take corporial form therefore couldnt touch or be touched. Because of this, Buffy never physically fought the "First". He had to call upon other bad guys to do his dirty work. The only breath of fresh air "The First" brought to the season was taking the form of some of the dead characters from previous seasons, but once the shock of it wore off it left you asking yourself, "Is that it? Is that all he can do?"
Anya and Zander seemed to be in a lull throughout. They would make love now and again but nothing would come of it, and once they killed her off Zander and Anya's story never seemed to wrap up. In fact Zander didnt even seem to care that his girlfriend was dead.
Season 7 didnt introduce anything new. The episodes seemed to repeat themselves from previous years and dragged on borishly, especially during the middle where the season started to lose my interest. I found some of the episodes so terrible I wanted to fast forward to the end, such as "Storyteller", "Same Time Same Place",and "Empty Places". Yet there were few great episodes too like, "Conversations with Dead People", "Him", and "Dirty Girls".
Spike and Buffy's relationship I found to be totally bizarre and it took me out of the story. Spike used to be so bad ass but now seems so "Buffy-whipped" its pathetic. She doesnt want spike but doesnt want anyone else to have him.
The story line about the potential slayers was so off putting. You didnt even get to know half of there names let alone feel for them if they were killed. For most of the season they were totally useless and whinny, and a majority of time was focused on training them to become more powerful Slayers. The introduction of a completely new cast was overwhelming.
The last episode got so ridiculous I found myself cringing at times. In the begining of the season the Uber-Vampires were nealry impossible to kill, yet the last episode turns into a "Lord of the Rings" type battle where the Potential slayers (after Willow puts a spell on them to make them stronger) kill thousands of them easy as pie. Just when they start losing the battle Spike randomly glows really bright, turns all the other vamps to dust and dies himself, right before the entire town of Sunnydale collapses into the ground. It was way over-the-top.
I did enjoy the return of Faith, my absolute favorite character in the series, and the introduction of the evil preacher, Caleb. He was the only formidable villian of the season, yet the final battle between him and Buffy was pathetic. He was killed so easily and fast it left me wanting to see more of him. In my opinion, I think he should have been the "Big Bad" of the season.
Seven was the absolute worst season of all the seasons. It felt as if the writers were tired of working on the show and half-assed it, but if your a die hard Buffy fan its worth a watch for the few good episodes and closure, just dont expect the classic edge of your seat, laugh-fest, thrill coaster kinda Buffy.』 『As Buffy acompanies Dawn on her first date at the new Sunnydale High, Giles continues Willow's magic education in England. But while Buffy is surprised to be offered a guidance counselor job, Willow is shocked to experience a horrific future vision of the Hellmouth.
Willow returns to Sunnydale and Giles soon follows with word that the Watcher's Council has been destroyed. Determined to make one last stand, Buffy and her allies gather for the upcoming battle, yet nothing can prepare them for The First and his robed Bringers, who are killing all the Potential Slayers- and anyone else who gets in their way.』
『The seventh and final season ofBuffy the Vampire Slayerbegins with a mystery: someone is murdering teenage girls all over the world and something is trying hard to drive Spike mad. Buffy is considerably more cheerful in these episodes than we have seen her during the previous year as she trains Dawn and gets a job as student counselor at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High. Willow is recovering from the magical addiction which almost led her to destroy the world, but all is not yet well with her, or with Anya, who has returned to being a Vengeance demon in "Same Time, Same Place" and "Selfless," and both women are haunted by their decisions.
Haunting of a different kind comes in the excellent "Conversations with Dead People" (one of the show's most terrifying episodes ever), in which a mysterious song is making Spike kill again in spite of his soul and his chip. Giles turns up in "Bring on the Night" and Buffy has to fight one of the deadliest vampires of her career in "Showtime". In "Potential" Dawn faces a fundamental reassessment of her purpose in life.
Buffywas always a show about female empowerment, but it was also a show about how ordinary people can decide to make a difference alongside people who are special. And it was also a show about people making up for past errors and crimes. So, for example, we have the excellent episodes "Storyteller", in which the former geek/supervillain Andrew sorts out his redemption while making a video diary about life with Buffy; and "Lies My Parents Told Me," in which we find out why a particular folk song sends Spike crazy. Redemption abounds as Faith returns to Sunnydale and the friends she once betrayed, and Willow finds herself turning into the man she flayed. Above all, this was always Buffy's show: Sarah Michelle Gellar does extraordinary work here both as Buffy and as her ultimate shadow, the First Evil, who takes her face to mock her. This is a fine ending to one of television's most remarkable shows.--Roz Kaveney』

Meanwhile Emma, her husband Dr. John and their seventeen year-old daughter Mari Collingwood head on vacation to their house nearby the lake. Mari borrows the family car to meet her friend Paige that is working in a store in the town. They befriend the teenager Justin in the store and he offers some marijuana to the pothead Paige in the motel where he is lodged. While they are smoking grass in Justin's room, Krug, who is Justin's father, Francis and Sadie arrive and abduct the girls. Krug drives Mari's car and she provokes a crash on a tree. Krug stabs Paige and rapes Mari; however Mary manages to escape, swimming in the lake, but Krug shots her on the back. They walk through the isolated road in the woods and they reach Collingwood's house telling that they have just had a car accident. Emma and John welcome the strangers until they discover what happened to their beloved daughter. The performances are on and the story is great. I would say this is one of the best remakes in years, this is not for the faint of heart though, but if you're curious about the remake, this was a very respectful movie of the original horror story of murder and revenge. 』
(The director of "Evil Laugh" called, he wants credit for the `broken microwave' gag) 『Spoilers abound, so please stop reading if you haven't seen this remake or the original. I bought this DVD for $2.99 at a Blockbuster that was closing, and made a point of watching the original immediately afterward, since I hadn't seen it in about 5 years.
This is a remake to one of the most notorious horror films of the `70s. Notorious because of the various prints that floated around (some showed more than others), notorious because of the sexual degradation and violence in an R rated movie (originally meant to be an adult film, they decided to go with an R rating to make more money on the drive-in circuit). And notorious for its frequent tonal shifts - black comedy/sadistic violence/slapstick comedy/sexual humiliation.
This remake takes the safe route, and all but sanitizes the sexual humiliation scenes and the brutality of the murders. Yes, what remains will shock to a degree, but not to the degree of the original.
Here are some changes (mostly politically correct crap that has overtaken contemporary horror films):
'72: Krug's son lures the girls to the lair so Krug and company can "have some fun", and in perhaps the most disturbing scene in the film, Krug's son briefly retaliates by pointing the gun at him, but Krug has so much control over him (by hooking him on heroin), he tells him to kill himself, and he obliges.
'09: Krug's son is a stereotypic pothead/victim who innocently invites the girls back to smoke, thinking Krug won't come back until later, and actively helps out the family towards the end.
'72: the girls are typical teenagers of the time who smoke.
'09: Mari's friend smokes, Mari evidently does not (coughing when she takes a hit), and this relegates the film to the current morality tale of pot smoking=death; see "Chainsaw" `03 when Biel expresses disgust over their trip to get pot, then flicks a joint out of the window when offered one, and "Friday the 13th" `09 that has pothead dolts getting killed by Jason.
'72: Mari is shot, manages to crawl out of the lake, and is found dead. Realistic and devastating.
'09: Mari is shot, and manages to swim, then crawl out of the lake and to the house in a rainstorm that is described as so bad, even a tow truck won't come out - politically correct nonsense to the extreme. And I'm sorry, but foreshadowing this by showing her holding her breath under water at the beginning doesn't cut it.
`72: The killers are depicted as "animal-like" (Sadie), killers of a priest and two nuns (Krug), and sadistic child molestors (Weasel).
'09: Sadie has a mascara tear fall from her eye when Mari is shot, and Weasel is neutered by being renamed "Francis" and cries like a baby when his broken nose is fixed. Contrast his crybaby behavior with Mari's stoic silence when her father stabs her in the back twice to treat her. And Krug is just another typical killer/rapist that could have been in any crime-themed TV show or movie.
'72: The family is sympathetic in their revenge for their dead daughter.
`09: The family is initially sympathetic in their revenge for their *still living* daughter, but sympathy turns to incredulity during the final scene that shows the father becoming Dr. Butcher M.D. when he kills Krug in a set piece taken directly from an obscure slasher film called "Evil Laugh". This scene could have worked if it was a nightmare scene (like the chisel nightmare from "Last House" '72) but it does not work in the context of a real scenario, but instead lowers it to the level of a stupid `80s slasher film, like one called "Evil Laugh".
A technically well-made/well-acted film, but not a good remake. 』
(If you like this sort of thing and know what you're getting into) 『I've seen the remake of Wes Craven's original and it was pretty good plus disturbing. Having seen my fair share of disturbing films like "Cannibal Holocaust." After watching this up to date version it seems a bit unbalanced and tame along with the unrated version. I say unbalanced because it seems to want to be two different films, in terms of genre and style. The last act and the only parts worth watching, seem to fall under the 'torture porn' genre, for example "Hostel," "Saw" and countless other horror films that rely on gross out gore to entertain the audience. Nothing wrong with this of course because I love my gore in horror flicks. This film does have some great deaths, even if they are a bit over the top. Hammers, garbage disposals, microwaves, all these are great death scenes. Yet the rest of the film (save for the rape bits) seem to belong to another film all together.
The acting is by the numbers, yet I found Dillahunt and Goldwyn are the stand out performances. Dillahunt, from Deadwood, plays Krug, the lead gang member. He walks the line of being nice, at least to me. He plays it nice, yet his actions are despicable. I say he played it nice because Aaron Paul, who plays another member of the gang is pretty "evil" and over the top. Goldwyn plays the father and has intense moments that is all played through his eyes. The two of them have a fight scene that was not in the original and it seems too fake, just to fill some time.
The story is predictable, even if you haven't seen the original and is by the numbers. In a film like this, I was expecting more shock moments. The final act had two, yet this film cries for more. As a remake, I'd say I've seen worse (Prom Night), but there are certainly better (Dawn of the Dead) remakes out there. Another thing that struck me was the flow of the movie, if you could call it that. While there are some strong emotional scenes, the movie doesn't know (or want) to emotionalize until the end. May be that's just my feeling here. At the end I didn't feel bad, but I certainly didn't feel as relieved as in "Taken."
Director Illiadis has a passion for blood, his shots of flesh cutting and his close ups in general but it's not enough to sustain a large amount of interest in what is, essentially, a film supposed to be actually about something. "Last House On The Left" is a well made film, don't get me wrong. If you're into this type of horror stuff then it might satisfy you. 』
(Visible Gore low&rape shown from afar-lots of Killing thought) 『See the other reviews for details about the movie. I took the time to comment since the film was well developed. They did logical things. I hate it when someone you think is dead comes back to fight again. These characters when dead are dead! Every thing the good and the bad "guys" and gal did is what you would properly expect. For this reason I gave the film a high rating. Good acting, great story development and 4 or 5 flashes of T&A in the unrated verion to keep the guys wanting more...Sorry I had to say that, she was really cute, mean but cute.』
(rape has NO place in film) 『the revenge is sweet but its a bit violent in the wrong way and the rape scene is something movies should NEVER depict
the subhuman people get some sweet revenge, the garbage disposal and microwave were the highlights of the film. Other than that its extremely violent and not a healthy thing for one to watch.
i saw it twice and probably don't need to watch stuff like that but its a good revenge movie.....and if u like that type of theme the crow is 10 thousand times better and MUCH more action and body count』 『Renowned horror director Wes Craven returns to the scene of the most notorious thrillers of all time in this darkly disturbing reimagining of The Last House on the Left. After kidnapping and ruthlessly assaulting two teen girls, a sadistic killer and his gang unknowingly find shelter from a storm at the home of one of the victim's parents-- two ordinary people who will go to increasingly gruesome extremes to get revenge. Loaded with shocking twists guaranteed to leave you on edge, it's the ominous film critics call, "One of the best horror remakes ever made" (Scott Weinberg, Fearnet.com).』 『A hot-button topic in the horror community from the minute it was announced, the 2009 remake of Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham’s controversialLast House on the Leftwill undoubtedly leave audiences polarized in regard to both its treatment of the source material and its level of violence. As with the original film, which drew inspiration from Ingmar Bergman’sThe Virgin Spring(and was itself based on 13th century Scandinavian legend), director Dennis Illadis’ film traces the downward spiral of two teenage girls (Sara Paxton and Martha MacIsaac fromSuperbad) who fall prey to a quartet of degenerates. The perpetrators then seek refuge in a nearby vacation home--which happens to be occupied by Paxton’s parents. Both versions spare no quarter in detailing the torments inflicted on the two girls, as well as the ruthlessly efficient revenge metered out to the killers by the parents; the difference, however, lies with the intent. Craven and Cunningham (who serve as executive producers for the remake) sought to shock Nixon/Vietnam-era audiences by showing the limits to which the "average" citizen could be pushed by violent acts; Illadis, however, is simply content to deliver a glossy, overamped thriller that neither delights in nor condemns the atrocities committed by its characters. The result is a flat, often tedious exercise in nihilism buoyed only by its cast, especially Paxton, Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter as her parents, and Garrett Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men) as the malevolent leader of the depraved foursome. Fans of the original need not bother with this version; newcomers should seek out Craven’s version, which has lost none of its power to overwhelm.--Paul Gaita
Amazon.com The legendarily scuzzy 1972 shockerLast House on the Leftgets all dressed up in this slick remake, which retro-fits the original storyline to an isolated lakeside cabin. This time out, unsuspecting teen Mari (Sara Paxton) makes the crucial mistake of going to buy some weed at a rundown motel room with a stranger (Spencer Treat Clark). It must have sounded like a good idea at the time. Soon Mari and her pal (Martha MacIsaac) are confronted by the stranger's diseased posse, and the real trouble begins. The set-up of the 1972 picture, which director Wes Craven borrowed from Ingmar Bergman'sThe Virgin Spring, is a blunt exercise in brutality followed by revenge, the twist being that the revenge is as savage as the initial transgression. This structure remains in the remake, although a few key plot points are changed, with little improvement. Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn play Mari's parents, who at some point will be called upon to put aside their merlot and their civilized constraints and get to it; Garret Dillahunt, coming off his strong work inDeadwoodandNo Country for Old Men, is far too qualified to be playing the stock role of the creep-in-chief. There is something distinctly strange about watching a film that took much of its original power from its cheapness, an outlaw energy that is completely lost in this dressed-up, professionally made remake. Here the scenes of rape and murder are presented not as pulpy shouts from the subculture but as necessary ingredients in a respectable machinery, which somehow makes them more dispiriting and unpleasant to watch. That this film is a technical advance on the original film on every level--acting, writing, photography--does not make it a better film.--Robert Horton』
