(Fun romp through homage to zombie-fest flicks offers chuckles rather than screams)
『Robert Rodriguez ("El Mariachi," "Once Upon a Time in Mexico") and Quentin Tarantino (do I need to list references?) have famously teamed up on a number of projects ("Desperado," "Sin City"). While these two cinemaphiles always appear to have a blast making their movies, the "Grindhouse" project may be the paragon of their mad-cap filmmaking self-indulgence.

"Grindhouse" was a double-feature in which RR and QT each provided a flick designed to be a homage to the low-budget horror/exploitation films of the 60s and 70s. "Planet Terror" is RR's entry, although QT makes quite an impression in an extended cameo as a deranged military nutcase. QT's half was "Death Proof," which I won't review here, but it's definitely of a piece with "Planet Terror."

Zombie films are seemingly as popular now as ever, so RR's spoof/tribute is timely. The flick opens with a hilarious mock trailer for "Machete," an X-rated revenge flick. The film quality of the trailer is terrible - RR fakes wear-and-tear on the film and includes skips and flaws in the soundtrack as a tribute to the grindhouse experience. This works fine in the trailer, but as it continues into the feature film, it gets more than a little annoying after 60 minutes.

"Planet Terror" opens up with a zombie outbreak in Texas, thanks to military hijinx led by Lt. Muldoon (Bruce Willis) for reasons unknown. Soon zombies are tearing across the countryside, rending the innocent and not-so-innocent limb from limb. Unfortunately, "Planet Terror" is aiming more for humor and gross-outs rather than genuine scares, so be prepared to wince rather than cringe. Some of the jokes really work, such as several close-ups of the "humps" of Black Eyed Peas singer/ornament Fergie, just before the zombies tear her humps apart. There's also a clever "Missing Reel," alert, with apologies from theater management, just when a love scene between stripper Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan) and Wray (Freddie Rodgriguez) gets its most "exploitative."

Ultimately, this is not a good horror movie in that it will not create any genuine terror, a la the original "Halloween," "Nightmare on Elm Street," or even "Dawn of the Dead." But it must be said that there are two types of horror movies, and this is the second type - the kind that goes for dark humor, ridiculiously-sensational death scenes, and blood by the barrelful. That kind of horror movie doesn't appeal to me all that much, truth be told, but if that's your game I expect "Planet Terror" will find its way to the top of your DVD stack pretty quickly.

For what it is, I cannot imagine a movie doing a better job of hitting its target than "Planet Terror." It is a tribute to bad taste and bad movies - and for what it is, almost as much fun as RR and QT had making it.』

(Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition))
『After an experimental bio-nerve gas is accidentally released at a remote U.S. military base in Texas, those exposed to the gas turn into flesh-eating, mutating zombies out to kill. An assortment of various people who include stripper Cherry, her shady mechanic ex-boyfriend Wray, a strong-willed doctor, the local sheriff, and an assortment of various people must join forces to survive the night as the so-called "sickos" threaten to take over the whole town and the world. A good time: that is all Planet Terror has to offer, no more, no less. And those seeking sheer entertainment, albeit deliverers with gusto.』

(GREEDY DIRECTOR'S BIG SCAM!!!)
『THIS FILM COULD HAVE REALY BEEN COOL ,HOWEVER IT IS RUINED BY MISSING FOOTAGE AND THE DIRECTOR;S GREED. THE MIDDLE OF THE FILM IS BOTH DESTRACTING AND DESJOINTED BY SUDDEN MISSING FOOTAGE ,WHICH IS A DISGRACE. ON ONE OF THE FEW BONUS FEATURES OF THE SINGLE DISC EDITION OF PLANET TERROR ,DIRECTOR ROBERT RODRIGUEZ STATED THAT THE "MISSING REEL" WOULD BE ON THE TWO-DISC EDITION OF THE MOVIE, HOWEVER THIS WAS NOTHING BUT A CONFOUNDED LIE. AND NOW WITH THE RELEASE OF PLANET TERROR-EXTENDED AND UNRATED(TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION, IT STILL DOES NOT CONTAIN THE "MISSING REEL".HOW MANY MORE EDITION ARE WE EXPECTED TO BUY BEFORE THE "MISSING FOOTAGE IS AVAILABLE, THATS IF IT ACTUALY EXISTS!!!. IT WOULD SEEM THAT EVEN DIRECTOR ROBERT RODRIGUEZ IS CONTENT WITH TAKING HIS FAITHFUL MOVIE FANS LAST DIME FOR HIS OWN FINANCIAL GAIN.』

(Hilarious)
『Planet Terror / 796029803878

*Spoilers*

If there's one thing I like more than zombie movies, it's parodies of zombie movies. "Planet Terror" delivers in a huge way, by spoofing just about everything you could hope for.

Just because this is a hilarious parody/comedy doesn't mean it's for kids, though. There's a lot of disturbing material here, often more disturbing because it's humans behaving badly, rather than simply zombies doing what zombies do. In one of the most horrific cinema scenes I've ever scene, a young boy shoots himself because he is too young to responsibly handle a gun (or he doesn't feel capable of being saddled with the instruction to kill anyone who approaches - even his abusive father). In another scene, an attempted rape comes to a disturbing halt due to the inability of the would-be rapist to maintain...structural integrity of his melting genitals. This isn't exactly light-viewing we're talking about.

Yet as a deconstruction of the genre, "Planet Terror" is superb. Every trick in the director's book is used with hilarious effect, including a false "missing film" / "intermission" during which all the introductory misunderstandings and usual "coming to grips with the situation" material all occurs without the audience being privy to the material. This is a particularly nice touch, in my opinion, since the "let's face it - they're zombies" speech really has nothing new to contribute at this point anymore.

If there is a downside to this movie, it is that Rose McGowan receives her leg-weaponry far later in the film than previews would have viewers believe - but every second afterwards is golden, climaxing in a truly hilarious ending that will have all zombie fans rolling on the floor laughing. If you like zombie movies, and like making light of them, "Planet Terror" is for you.

~ Ana Mardoll』

(Fun - but for a certain type of audience)
『I'll be honest, there are over 200 other reviews in this movie - what can I add? I'm only reviewing this movie because I'm trying to manipulate/influence Amazon's methods of selecting items for recommendations and for Gold Box offers.

Having said that, if you know what Grindhouse is and/or you know, in general, what type of movie this is, you will not be disappointed. This was released in conjunction with Tarantino's "Death Proof". Planet Terror has, by far, more over-the-top gore and violence. Therefore (to me), it's loads more fun!

This is not a ground-breaking, genre-influencing movie. The stunts aren't super spectacular. The story isn't one you haven't seen before (in general). There are no big plot twists - it's just a straight-forward, deformed-mutant, apocalyptic survival action movie...and it's solidly pulled-off.

Basically, "Planet Terror" is a fun 90 minutes of cinematic diversion. To me, that equals "I like it"...and, to Amazon, the equals 4-stars.』

『(Horror) A fun zombie film that busts at the seams with gross special effects, amazing action, and deliciously over-the-top moments, as gun-legged Cherry Darling and one man wrecking crew El Wray try to save the world from a horde of flesh-eating zombies.』
『Loud, fast, and proudly out of control,Grindhouseis a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Rodriguez'sPlanet Terroris a rollicking horror/sci-fi/action piece about a plague outbreak that turns citizens into cannibalistic murderers; it's heavy on the gore and explosions but also features a terrific cast of A players (Freddy Rodriguez, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton) and B-movie vets (Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Tom Savini) and the indelible image of Rose McGowan as a stripper whose torn-off leg is replaced by a high-powered machine gun.

If Tarantino's feature was a nod to the moody, genre-jumping exploitation of the early '70s, Rodriguez's contribution to theGrindhouseaesthetic pays tribute to the manic gorefests from Italy and the States in the early '80s. And much like the film itself, the supplemental features onTerror's double-disc Extended and Unrated presentation have a loose, action-packed and familial vibe that gives fans full access to Rodriguez's one-man-studio approach to moviemaking. The director is featured twice on audio tracks: first, on the feature commentary, which provides a fun tour through the picture's production (as well as information on the upcomingGrindhouseDVD set, which will reunite the two pictures in their theatrical format), and later on the "10-Minute Film School," a fascinating breakneck run through the numerous visual and CGI effects that produced the film's most eye-popping effects, including McGowan's leg/machine gun. Most of the extras echo Rodriguez's informative and entertaining vibe--two featurettes cover the picture's male and female cast (the former offers affectionate tributes to the exploitation vets in the company, including Biehn, Fahey, Michael Parks, and Savini), while "Casting Rebel" is an amusing discussion of how Rodriguez came to bring his own son into the movie, as well as his refusal to disclose the fate of Rebel's character. "Sickos, Bullets, and Explosions" takes a look atTerror's extensive special effects through interviews with stunt coordinator Jeff Dashnaw and members of the visual effects team, while "The Friend, The Doctor, and The Real Estate Agent" chats with three non-actors, all pals of Rodriguez, who wound up with small but significant roles in the picture. The Extended and Unrated aspect of the set is limited to a few extended scenes and extra splatter (sorry, the infamous "Missing Reel" is not recovered for this set), while Grindhouse fans bemoaning the absence of the film's hilarious faux trailers will appreciate the inclusion of Rodriguez's hilariousMachetespot, with Danny Trejo as a death-dealing, lady-loving tough guy gunning for double-crosser Fahey. The set also includes an "Audience Reaction" track: Essentially, it's a whole track of whoops and hollers that allows the viewer to "experience" the film as if they were watching it in an actual grindhouse from back in the day. Its inclusion neither adds to or detracts from enjoying this DVD, but it's wholly indicative of the level of fun Rodriguez had making the picture--and wants to share with his fans.-- Paul Gaita

(Don't care what the critics say)
『*May contain slight spoilers*

Its not the greatest movie ever made but I loved it, my friend Ariana and I had a good time in the theater (which is the whole point of going to see a movie). We laughed quite a bit...

John C Reilly was excellent as Crepsley, no-one else could've played it better :). The characters at the Cirque de Freak were interesting... my favorite was the Snake Boy and Monkey Girl (though I didn't much care for the snake itswelf)

One of my favorite scenes was the "fight" in the graveyard between Crespley and the other vamp. Well-shot and exciting.

They could've played up the tension between Steve/Darren more but I think they saving more for the next film (it'll be a shame if they don't make another one).

One critic said "newcomes will be confused"... i don't see what was so confusing about it, I thought the filmmakers laid everything out quite nicely. Ariana and I were able to follow the story easily.

Combining two books into one film is risky (andI haven't read the second book yet) but I thought they did good with the translation with book to screen.

Mr Tiny was creepy, but an interesting villain, specially with the 'Book of Souls' part... He seemed a bit like the Fates from Greek Mythology.

I'm very picky about vamp films (most seem to be poorly done, with the exception of 'Interview with the Vampire' are poorly done.) but all in all, this one is worth your time :).

ignore any typos please』

(Brilliant!!! Loved it!!!)
『If I had to sum up "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assitant in one word, it would be; BRILLIANT! This movie was hilarious, interesting and had me thirsty for more! I saw it twice in the theatre and headed back for a third when I saw it was no longer playing. I have the DVD already in my cart and I am so excited for it's release. Give this film a chance and I gurantee you will not be disappointed! Great cast, story and sets! 2 Thumbs up and a million gold stars! Bravo! Encore!!』

(Freak du Film)
『Cirque du Freak is based on the first trilogy of The Saga of Darren Shan, a set of twelve books (four trilogies) by the Irish writer Darren O'Shaughnessy (pen name: Darren Shan, just like his hero's). These teen/young adult oriented novels have a worldwide following and been translated to over 25 languages.

Darren is a teen with a charmed life: popular, smart, from an upper class family, he is destined for a productive and orderly life of college-job-family. This order however is disrupted one night, when, after some prodding from his troubled best friend Steve, Darren attends a late night performance of Cirque du Freak. When Darren's actions put Steve's life in danger, a vampire performer from Cirque du Freak is the only one with the power to save the young man. And so, Darren strikes a deal: in exchange for his friend's life, Darren will abandon his family and become the vampire's assistant; a half vampire himself. Unbeknownst to him, a war has been brewing between the two fractions of the vampire world. Both Darren and Steve are destined to be major players in the coming events...

Even though, clearly, I am beyond the teen/young adult years, I found the story compelling enough to investigate further. I am pleased to report that most of the film's production values, including CGI, were impeccable. John C. Reilly as the vampire Larten Crepsley was surprisingly convincing. The number of big name actors who made an appearance in the film was astonishing. So, why only two stars? Well, there were two major problems:
1) The actors chosen to portray Darren and Steve not only lacked chemistry, but lacked the abilities to emote deep feelings. Consequently, what should have been a dramatic decision to leave his family comes across as nothing more then a minor blip on Darren's schedule. What should have been a complex feud between two friends who go on to become leaders of the opposing vampire fractions, seemed as nothing more then two silly characters bickering at one another.
2) Secondly, even though the story was great, the script was poor. Despite the fact that we learned of the events in a chronological order, their lack of clarity was unacceptable.

The film ended with many unanswered questions. Counting on audience support, there were three sequences planned, one for each trilogy. I suppose those plans must be on hold at the moment, given the poor turn out at the box office. Shame really. I think the books disserved better...

(Pretty Good!!!)
『Recently, I've wanted nothing to do with vampires because of Twilight. I saw this because it looked funny and I like some of John C. Reilly's movies, and it was better than I expected. After Darren and Steve go to a freak show, Darren steals a unique poisonous spider belonging to a vampire named Larten Crepsley. When Steve is bitten by the spider, Darren goes back to Larten and asks for an antidote. Larten agrees to give him the antidote if Darren agrees to become half-Vampire and be his assistant. Darren and some of the freaks help Larten battle another race of Vampire called the Vampaneze. The regular Vampires are more peaceful. Will they be able to stop the evil Vampaneze? I highly recommend CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT!!!

(A fun teenage vampire flick...)
『I will preface my review of this movie by saying that I much prefer Blade, From Dusk til Dawn and Underworld type vampire flicks that all have tons of action, violence and gore in them. Whenever you get into the PG-13 world you are going to get a much more friendly and watered down film with less brutality, violence and language. Reality and financing dictates that the movie studios have to appeal to a broader audience when possible to make enough money to allow the films I mentioned previously.

I am not familiar with the book that this movie is based upon. That being said this was a fun 'teen oriented' vampire movie with no significant violence or gore. This is a PG-13 (unfortunately) flick; you know it's going to be in the vanilla spectrum so don't expect Blade or Underworld. The CGI animation and coloring of John C. Reilly's pet spider was amazing, but then again any quality CGI animation done nowadays should be and usually is amazing. The makeup effects, set design and costumes were well done and give the movie an interesting modern Gothic appearance and feel.

The characters were interesting and I found myself pretty involved in the story. Comparing this film to the wildly successful Twilight films, the two out so far any ways, Cirque is much more interesting. There are no moping or perfect looking Twilight characters and Cirque was just more interesting than both Twilight 1 and 2. I love John C. Reilly and vampire movies so this was my primary motivation for seeing this in the theater. Reilly's character was not in his usual comedic or musical roles so it was good to see him do something completely different. Willem Defoe has a smaller role in this film and plays a very interesting vampire character as well.

All in all this movie is worth seeing and if you are a genre fan it is probably worth owning.』

『Welcome to the Cirque Du Freak, a traveling sideshow filled with magical creatures, misunderstood freaks, and the mysterious vampire, Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly). Drawn to the dark, unpredictable world of the Cirque, 16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) decides to trade in his ordinary life for a chance to become an immortal vampire. As Darren explores his newfound powers and faces unexpected enemies, he’ll find that his existence as a member of the undead is filled with more challenges, suspense and fun than he ever thought possible. Based on the best-selling book series and co-starring Salma Hayek, Josh Hutcherson, Ken Watanabe, and Willem Dafoe, it’s a fast-paced, suspenseful journey critics call, “Imaginative!” (Peter Hall, Cinematical.com)』
『Adapted from Darren O'Shaughnessy's book series the Saga of Darren Shan,Cirque du Freak: A Vampire's Assistantis an endearingly goofy teen-vampire tale reminiscent ofThe GooniesorLost Boys. Like those kids' horror classics,Cirque du Freakis a coming-of-age tale in which maturity is hastened by horrific discoveries of alternate realms. Best friends Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia) and Steve (Josh Hutcherson) embark on a life-changing career path as monster prodigies after attending a taboo freak show starring various mutants and Madame Octa, a fluffy, neon orange, Muppetlike spider that Darren is irrevocably compelled to kidnap. Darren's petty theft results in the boys' introductions into the dualistic realm of good vampires, including the paternal Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly), and less-generous bloodsuckers such as Murlaugh (Ray Stevenson) and his Vampaneze family. Part of the fun is in learning how vampires are defined in this world; for example, they can't turn into bats but they have magic spit. The film's additional appeal is in its clever teen-vampire cultural nods, such as when Darren plays his Gameboy inside his coffin. The actual circus, too, offers a wide array of fun, spooky characters, such as ringleader Mr. Tall (Ken Watanabe) and Darren's scaly buddy Snakeboy (Patrick Fugit).Cirque du Freak: A Vampire's Assistanthas tough moments, too, once the boys realize they can't look back. (Why?)
『To be blunt I didn't exactly like this season, There were a lot of boring episodes, while Once More With Feeling was good I'm not one for musicals though, the Willow magical addiction was ok but not strong enough to save the season, Spike and Buffy really damned the season for me, Dark Willow was great as a Big Bad and Alyson Hannigan (I don't know if that's spelt right) did a great job. All around not my favorite season.』

(THIS SHOW IS SO BAD IT GETS ZERO STARS)
『The small group of fans of this show will admit this was the worst show in tv history. It was cancelled twice by not one but two networks. BAd bad acting and plots that are so stupid made it just awful. The show is now in the "was the actually a show called Buffy?" becasue no one remembers it or really liked it. only a small group of challenged people. save your money and avoid this』

("ONCE MORE WITH FEELING!")

Let me begin by saying that for the first time there was way too much Buffy and Spike. At times it seemed, almost episode after episode focused on their extreme degradation. Sarah Michelle Gellar herself was not pleased and Whedon, though present, did not orchestrate the whole season. That out of the way, do not avoid season 6. As one person pointed it out, its apparent lack of direction at times it indicative of the lives of the characters. They are literally on their own, with no one to guide them, and they are all struggling and lost. Spike, Buffy, Giles, Xander, Willow, Anya, Dawn, Tara, all of them. Remembering that the premise of this season is that Willow brings Buffy back from the dead, its underlying darkness for the entire season does take on a relentless, very watchable sequence of episodes that draw us into the darkness with them. Buffy of course must struggle with life after death, literally. Willow must struggle with her addiction to witchcraft, which is used as a metaphore for drug addiction, Xander and Anya are falling to pieces, and no one cares about Dawn. Giles is just sick of all of them, period. It is all worth it however for the most beloved episode ever "Once more with Feeling" A brilliant episode that sparkled with the charm of a broadway musical. We also see super nerd Warren become super dangerous to all of them. And of course, we get Dark Witch Willow whos demonic rage is uleashed thanks to Warren. It is the flip side of Vampire Willow, and this time there is no way to destroy an amulet and stop it. Be prepared for a very very dark season, with funny moments. No matter how this seasons falls with you, it is essential in the cog of the Buffy Universe. See it for yourself, the season wil stay with you for some time, whether you like it or not.

(damned happy)
『it completes me. or at least my collection anyway. the product was as advertised and delivered on time. no need to say anymore.』

(One Last Solid Season)
『And I mean solid. This season was very different from any other season of Buffy. Most of the other seasons follow a similar plotline. Evil guys appear, Buffy and her friends take care of them. This season kind of abandoned that plotline. Instead, they focused on problems or flaws that the main characters are facing. There are big bads in this season, the three nerds, or the trio as they are sometimes called. They consist of Jonathan, the class dork who almost committed suicide in season 3, Warren, the guy who made the Buffy robot in the previous season, and Andrew, who is the brother of Tucker, the guy who tried to sick the hellhounds on the prom in season 3.
The season starts out with Buffy and all her friends fighting some demons in the cemetery. After a prolonged fight scene, they dispatch the demons. Then we find out that it isn't really Buffy, it's the Buffy-bot. Her friends want everyone to believe that Buffy is still alive so that Sunnydale will still be a safe place. Now there are two problems I have with this. First, if they want people to believe that Buffy is still alive, why did they erect a tombstone for her? Secondly, who is the new slayer? Isn't another slayer supposed to be called after the last one dies? Like at the end of season 1, when Buffy died, and Kendra was called? Whatever. So Giles decides to go back to England, believing that, with Buffy gone, there is no future for him Willow, Xander, Tara, and Anya decide to do a spell to bring Buffy back. They think she is in some kind of hell dimension. They do this very weird and dangerous spell, which succeeds. Just in the nick of time, too. A demon motorcycle gang have heard that Buffy is dead. They decide to invade Sunnydale. Buffy emerges from her coffin, in a confused and delerious state. She beats all the demons, and reunites with her friends. She tells them that she was in a hell dimension, and thanks them for bringing her out of it. Later she tells Spike, who is still hanging around Sunnydale, that she was really in Heaven. Every moment she spends back on the earth is torment. She tells him not to tell her friends.
I thought this was a very good setup for the season. It was very different from anything we had seen before in this series. Buffy does not want to be alive. Now this is different from her whining about not wanting to be the slayer. She does not even want to be alive. And she is still the slayer. She ends up starting a physical relationship with Spike, even though she hates him. Despite the fact that it gives her a release from life, she is disgusted with herself. And she also takes a job at a fast food place. Sure. Let's throw that in there. Make her life really depressing. At the same time, her friends are going through problems of their own. Willow and Tara are struggling with their relationship because Tara is so bland. Oh, and also because Willow is starting to become addicted to her magic. Willow is going to some guy and letting him do spells on her. I think this was supposed to be a metaphor for being addicted to drugs. Okay, whatever. Willow also starts to take her magic too far. For instance, she alters Tara's memory after they have a fight. She and Tara separate for a while. Meanwhile, Xander and Anya decide to get married. But at their wedding, an old man who claims to be Xander from the future appears and tells him that they cannot get married. He shows Xander a vision of the future, in which Xander and Anya have a very disfunctional family. It seems that Anya cheats on Xander, and they have a domen-kid. In an argument they have, Xander appears to kill Anya. Shocked from the vision, Xander is not sure what to do. Then it is revealed that the old man is really a demon who was cursed by Anya and wants revenge. They kill him, but the damage is done. Xander sees his own alchoholic parents fighting, and decides to leave Anya at the alter. Anya is enraged, and the head-vengeance-demon-guy gives her her powers back. She becomes a vengeance demon again. Now Dawn...I hate Dawn...Dawn is being as bratty as usual. See, I thought that with Glory no longer a threat, Dawn would just disappear or something. Nope. She's there `till the end of the series. And she is such a brat in this season, possibly even worse than before. I know she lost her mother and her sister temporarily, but c'mon. When is she gonna grow up already? When are the writers going to make her into a likeable character, or at least give her something to do besides make our lives miserable? Well, never.
I'm going to devote a short paragraph to talking about the musical episode, "Once More With Feeling". Now I'm not a big fan of musicals. I think they're stupid. However, I enjoyed this episode, to a point. I think they dragged it out a little too much. Where most episodes are about 40 minutes, this one was about an hour. They could have cut out one or two songs. I don't think it was anywhere near the best episode of the series, but it was entertaining.
I mentioned the trio of nerds earlier. I liked them for the first few episodes. They were funny, and they helped to lighten an otherwise dark season. But as the season went on, I realized that they were the big bads of the season. I was horrified. They were simply not evil enough to be real villians. But as time went on, Warren started to get darker. He starts to assert authority over Jonathan and Andrew, and he ends up murdering his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to rape her. He ends up getting some mystical stones which gives him enhanced strength as well as invulnerability. He and Buffy fight, and he starts to get the upper hand. With Jonathan's help, however, Buffy manages to smash the stones and defeat Warren. Warren manages to escape from her. He later comes to her house and shoots at her, wounding her. One of his stray bullets goes in the upstairs window and kills Tara. Oh, well, not like there was much of a character to kill off, anyway. Willow goes crazy. After starting to get a handle on controling her magic, She goes evil and kills Warren. Now I'd like to point out that evil Willow is very similar to Vampire Willow from season 3. I just thought that was interesting. As far as villians go, dark Willow was not really the best. She just seems too sweet to be evil. But she wasn't horrible, and it worked okay.
So Willow pursues Warren and Jonathan, intent on killing them. Buffy tries to get through to her, but is unsuccessful. Willow ends up trying to destroy the world, and is stopped just in time by Xander. Having overcome his cowardice and self-pity, Xander manages to talk Willow out of her evil state by telling her that he loves her, no matter what she does or is about to do. Willow eventually breaks down sobbing in Xander's arms. I loved this scene. I like it whenever Xander gets to do something. I loved that Buffy was unable to get through Willow, but Xander did by reminding her of their lifelong friedship. After Willow is stopped, Buffy realizes that her depression was very selfish and stupid. She tells Dawn that she wants to live in the world and show Dawn the world...or something corny like that. The season ends with Spike winning his soul back because he wants Buffy to like him...yeahhhhh.......I'll have more to say about that is my season 7 review. Which is going to be extremely painful for me.

『Various.』
『The sixth season ofBuffy the Vampire Slayerfollowed the logic of plot and character development into some gloomy places. The year begins with Buffy being raised from the dead by the friends who miss her, but who fail to understand that a sacrifice taken back is a sacrifice negated. Dragged out of what she believes to have been heavenly bliss, she finds herself "going through the motions" and entering into a relationship with the evil, besotted vampire Spike just to force her emotions. Willow becomes ever more caught up in the temptations of magic; Xander and Anya move towards marriage without ever discussing their reservations; Giles feels he is standing in the way of Buffy's adult independence; Dawn feels neglected. What none of them need is a menace that is, at this point, simply annoying--three high school contemporaries who have turned their hand to magical and high-tech villainy. Added to this is a hungry ghost, an invisibility ray, an amnesia spell and a song-and-dance demon (who acts as rationale for the incomparable musical episode "Once More, with Feeling").

This is a year in which chickens come home to roost: everything from the villainy of the three geeks to Xander's doubts about marriage come to a head, often--as in the case of the impressive wedding episode--through wildly dark humor. The estrangement of the characters from each other--a well-observed portrait of what happens to college pals in their early 20s--comes to a shocking head with the death of a major character and that death's apocalyptic consequences. The series ends on a consoling note which it has, by that point and in spite of imperfections, entirely earned.--Roz Kaveney

(A classy and somewhat classic remake.)
『In Martin Scorsese's remake of the 1962 thriller, "Cape Fear," Robert De Niro is cast as the villain with a vendetta, Max Cady. Max was put away for fourteen years for battery (but is later revealed to be rape) and finds the time to educate himself. He reads lots of books, gets close with God and eventually comes to the conclusion that his lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) wronged him. It turns out Bowden suppressed evidence that would have at least lightened the sentence, and upon his release, Cady sets out to make sure each and every day of his life is a living nightmare. He covets Bowden's wife (Jessica Lange), corrupts his teenage daughter (Juliette Lewis) and nearly destroys his career and credibility, forcing the family into hiding. It seems there is nothing Cady isn't willing to do to seek vengeance and he is so smart about it that it leaves the slippery lawyer helpless and desperate, much in the same way he left his client all those years before.

While it's not one of Scorsese's best or most critically beloved films, "Cape Fear" is at least a rarity in that it is a remake that is better than the original. Sam Bowden's character in this film, as portrayed by Nolte, is a much more layered and complex one than in the original, thus making it difficult to distinguish who the bad guy is. Heck, if it weren't for a few scenes of graphic violence that show off Cady's mean-streak, you'd likely be left in the dark as to who you're supposed to root for. De Niro's turn as Max Cady is possibly one of his most colorful and most intense since "Taxi Driver," and even went as far as to earn him an Oscar nomination the following year. His performance in this film is a testament to how versatile an actor he can be, and his portrayal of the cold-blooded yet well-read killer will stick in your head for days. Take a scene where he seduces Juliette Lewis' character. Taboo for its time (yes, even for the 90's) it is no doubt one of those scenes that will make your skin crawl and marks the point where you realize these aren't stock characters we're dealing with here.

Scorsese's take on the material is very much old-school and Alfred Hitchcock inspired. The original score from composer Bernard Herrmann is left intact and helps push the mounting terror over the edge, making the film seem like a nightmare you just can't wake from. "Cape Fear" is, at its core, a chilling thriller where its characters spend most of the time desperate and frantic. They make bad choices that lead to an intense final act that has earned its place in Hollywood history. Truly an intense film about ugly characters delivered with a touch of class by its director and filled out with performances that range from great to legendary. If one thing can be said about this movie, it's that it will stay with you for a long time after watching it.

(The martin and bobby show)
『with martin having found his new muse in leo i found it particularly interesting to go back and watch his later work with his former avatar. i dont know that its as award worthy as some of there past collaborations but its still high quality and well worth watching』

("The Best Movie Remake!)
『Hollywood has never really done remakes all that good over the years, but the 1991 film "Cape Fear" proves that statement false. This movie totally outshines the original, made in 1962. The original "Cape Fear" was excellent too, but the 1991 version has more action and suspense.
Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange are the stars here and what's amazing while watching this film you forget they are stars. These actors are totally into their characters, and you forget that you are watching actors playing these roles. These roles spring to life, which is a testament to the kinds of actors in this motion picture. Mortin Scorse directed "Cape Fear", and it's one of his best works.
The movie is not for the squeamish. Robert DeNiro plays one of the most heartless villins in movie hostory, as he wants to wreak vengence on Sam Bowden and his family. Many years before Sam defended Max Cady in a rape trial and hid evidence that could have gotten him off. Max then spent years in prison, and now that he's a free man all he has on his mind is to get even.
The most disturbing part of the film is when Max picks up a woman at a bar who works with Sam in his law firm. The battery and rape scene is extremely disturbing and graphic, but it had to be filmed to depict the kind of animal Max Cady is.
Juliette Lewis stars as the Bowden's daughter, and it's one of her first movie roles. Her portrayal as a teenager is a dead ringer for people in her generation. Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, who starred in the original "Cape Fear", have supporting roles in the newer version.
The DVD is spectacular with commentary, trailers, and a documentary with the cast and crew on the making of the film.
Robert DeNiro, my favorite actor ever, received an Oscar nomination as Best Actor, but lost that year to another villin, played by Anthony Hopkins for "The Silence of the Lambs".』

(Martin Scorcese's Cape Fear is Force Majeure)
『I disagree with the editors that the remake, which is arguably superior in every way to the original, is not even worth a look. No disrespect intended to Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum who were both great actors who delivered solid performances in the original, but I prefer the 1991 version. For her role as Danielle Bowden, Lewis was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The remake also features one of the greatest actors of all time, Robert DeNiro, and was directed by one of the greatest directors of all time, Martin Scorsese. That is to say nothing of the brilliant cinematography and soundtrack.

In the role of Sam Bowden, Nolte gives a convincing performance as a mild-mannered attorney who is knocked for a loop when his past comes back to haunt him. I give Nolte props for showing his range here. Instead of the stereotypical tough-guy part that he often finds himself in, Nolte as Sam Bowden is a 4-eyed wimp who doesn't even know how to handle a gun.

Take the scariest convict you've ever seen in a newspaper or on TV, magnify him 10x over, give him a very bad axe to grind and you've got DeNiro's Max Cady. With his deranged and (at least in his sick mind) scripturally-based vendetta tattooed on his flesh, he proclaims that he is here to "save" Sam Bowden and that he is going to "guide him through hell to reach his paradise." DeNiro is like a master chess player, besting Sam at every turn.

The remake Bowdens are flawed and thus more believable--they are real people with real problems, unlike the original Bowdens who were an Any Family from Main Street America. In the remake, Sam Bowden cheats on his wife (and maybe in the courtroom). Leigh Bowden chain smokes, screams at her husband and dreams of a lover she doesn't have. Danielle Bowden hides in her room when her parents fight and gets busted for smoking pot. Max Cady is able to capitalize on the weaknesses of the individual family members, pitting them against each other and making them in turn more vulnerable to him and his schemes.

The stakes are also higher in the remake. In the original, Bowden served as a witness to Cady's crime. Scorsese changes the relationship between Cady and Bowden. The storyline is more complex since remake Bowden is not only Cady's attorney, but the attorney who abandoned him and sold him up the river. A larger issue is examined: The all-too-common problem of court-appointed defense attorneys who fail their clients. And while we examine Sam and Max, we also examine ourselves. Would we have done the same thing if we had been in Sam's place? Is there one member of the audience who feels sorry for Max Cady, even though maybe they should? There is a certain karmic satisfaction that after Sam failed Max, everyone around Sam is now failing Sam. As much as we loathe Max Cady we may not be so quick to side with Sam Bowden, either. Remake-Sam carries a heavy weight and for the severity of his transgression he must stand trial, literally.

Where Hero-Sam (Peck) did in the end what we expected him to do all along, Sinner-Sam (Nolte) redeems himself and is absolved of his guilt when his hands are washed clean in the raging river. God is missing in the original but arrogantly and pervertedly invoked by DeNiro's Cady. In the remake, God is in fact the only able-bodied character other than Max Cady. Force Majeure is an unforeseeable act of God that cancels all promises and obligations. And it is the act that saves Sam Bowden and his family. We find out that the villain's flesh-art and bellicose proclamations were, afterall, only the rantings of a lunatic. God is not on Cady's side.

I would recommend the original to someone who is in the mood to be entertained by a simple story about right and wrong. I would recommend the remake to someone who is in the mood to be entertained by a story about a situation so wrong only God can make it right.

(GOTTA WATCH OUT FOR ALL THOSE CHRISTIAN MURDERERS)
『In "Cape Fear", Marty Scorsese introduces a Fourth of July parade scene rife with sluggish Americana. The scene is slowed down, given morbid music, and depicts patriotic icons with bland expressions, going through the motions while an unenthusiastic crowd masks a black-and-white cancer. It also chooses to make Bob DeNiro a really dangerous Christian who quotes Scripture, speaks in tongues and preaches while he commits his acts of violence. Outside of one episode of "The X Files" in which a sect of Hasidic Jews included some ghost-Jew character who kills in the name of same ancient Hebrew tenet, I cannot recall seeing openly Jewish killers on screen.』

『Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller dabbles a bit in some fascinating psychological crosscurrents between its characters, but it finally trades in all that rich material for extensive and gratuitous violence. Robert De Niro plays a serial rapist released from prison after 14 years. Angry because his appalled attorney (Nick Nolte) made it easy for him to be convicted, this monster is out to hurt Nolte's character through his wife (Jessica Lange) and daughter (Juliette Lewis). The themes of interlocking guilt and anger between these people suggests a smart film in the making. But the final act, set on a boat with De Niro's vengeful pervert attacking Nolte and the two women, takes a more unfortunate direction. Stick with the original (which starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, each of whom make a cameo appearance in this film).--Tom Keogh

(Halloween)
『On Halloween 1963, Haddenfield, 10-year-old Michael Myers, estranged and mentally unstable, is imprisoned in Smith's Grove Sanitarium under the care of Dr. Sam Loomis for the murders of his mother's boyfriend, his older sister, and her boyfriend. Now, 16 years later, he escapes and now in search of his baby sister Laurie and Dr. Loomis must warn the residents of Haddenfield and get to Laurie before Michael does. This movie does make for a very admirable companion piece to a horror classic, blending the old and the new into an entertaining and thought-provoking fright movie.

(The Blackest Eyes......The Devil's Eyes................)
『Horror films tend to succeed on one of two levels: by appealing to the imagination, or by assaulting the emotions(or in some cases the senses). I don't know that any movie has ever managed to achieve as much, on both levels simultaneously, as Halloween. The movie is beautiful and stylistic,on the one hand, yet primal and suspenseful on the other.

There are just so many things in this film that work. So many things that are just 'right', for lack of a better word. Take Michael Myers himself, for example. He is the ultimate slasher villain. You can conceive him as an insane freak of nature, or the very embodiment of Death itself. He can be this macabre phantom one minute.............and a brutish animal the next. Despite his size, he can appear out of nowhere, get from place to place without being seen, be right in the room with you but go unnoticed. Yet alongside of this ethereal quality there exists a savagery, vividly demonstrated when he impaled that strapping young man to the wall, or when he sated his hunger by devouring a local dog.

I have heard people refer to Michael Myers as an 'efficient' killer. Usually producers and other business oriented people who are utterly clueless about such matters. Of course, Myers CAN be efficient when he so chooses. But it is hardly his typical mode of operation. Myers is a gamesman, a prankster........the ultimate sportsman.

Again and again, he offers opportunities to his prospective victims to salvage their lives. The most glaring example is when Annie gets trapped in the laundry room. At one point, she even gets stuck halfway in and out of the window. There could be no more convenient juncture for an 'efficient killer' to do his thing. But what does Myers do? He eschews this golden opportunity. Far, far too easy.

Even when he's lurking in the back seat of the car, he goes so far as to give her one, final chance. One last, brazen hint, which she DOES eventually get..........but she gets it about 3 seconds too late.

Linda and her boyfriend get similar clues. Laurie not only gets hints as to what is happening, but once the attack is under way, he even gives her what amounts to a couple of TIME-OUTS!!

An efficient killer does not operate this way. But a hunter, if he is a true sportsman, does. And this is what makes Myers the ideal slasher killer. He may offer you several chances to save your life.......but you cannot count on this. He is the ghoulish personification of Death, and the unrivalled alpha male among slasher villains.

Myers is the most obvious factor. But Dr.Loomis is essential, as well. Strong, determined, and obsessive, he is the virtuous flipside to the hunter he is, himself, hunting. You get the feeling that Loomis feels just about as at home in those shadows as Myers himself. Laurie Strode is a terrific 'final girl.' Awkward, shy, and good-natured, but resilient and courageous, as well.

There are so many 'little' factors that serve to enhance the atmosphere of this film. The sound of children's voices chanting that creepy nursery rhyme. The muffled sound of Myer's animalistic breathing through his cadaverous mask. The mystique of Dr. Loomis......what exactly did he see during those 15 years in the sanitarium that aroused THIS level of obsession? The occasional glimpse of cascading leaves, or a solitary jack o'lantern, to offer us subtle reminders of the season. The ghastly shadows on the front of the Myers' house. The sight of the escaped lunatics, in their white hospital gowns, roaming aimlessly on the horizon. The way Myers tilts his head, like a curious animal, when he is gazing at the victim he had impaled to the wall with that huge butcher knife.......

Yet, for all that, it would not be the same film if not for the pace. The pace of Halloween feels virtually like real-time. Once you get to Halloween morning, the action is timed in such a way that it feels like you are watching an actual day unfold. The downside is that the film feels a bit slow in the middle. It didn't really bother me, but I have heard some people complain about this. The upside, of course, is that, once you buy into the timing, everything feels so authentic, so absolutely real.

I have never seen a more suspenseful film than Halloween. The final twenty minutes or so, it is like you are literally watching a young girl fighting for her life. For pure suspense, that closet scene may be the greatest moment in slasher film history. It is one of the most suspenseful, nervewracking scenes you will ever encounter in ANY film, from ANY genre.

But compare that to another sequence in the movie, that took place a few minutes before. I refer to the part where Laurie Strode goes over to check on her friends. That's basically all there is to it-a girl crossing a street, going from one house to another. But, in its own way, this scene is nearly as brilliant as the closet segment. A brief, simple walk, across a lonely street, to see if her friends are okay. You don't see any killers, or dead bodies, or violence of any kind. Just the occasional falling leaves, or the gentle autumnal winds caressing her hair. Just a girl crossing a street.

But Carpenter imbues that one scene with more dread, more anticipation, more mystery, more subdued horror, than most directors are able to attain over the course of entire films.

So often, genius lies not in what you do, but in HOW you do it.

Michael Myers, Dr. Loomis, and Laurie Strode are the participants in a deadly 'triangular hunt', of sorts. All of it takes place in a typical American neighborhood, against the backdrop of an idyllic Halloween night......and there is simply nothing else like it.』

(Awesome!!!)
『It's my favorite horror movie and now I watch it on bluray it's freaking awesome and I love it even more.』

(The BEST horror movie, ever!)
『When I bought my blu ray player, I couldn't get this movie fast enough. This is hands down my favorite horror move. What makes this so fantastic is that is has very little blood, and a ton of suspense. My favorite parts is when a character is doing something, then the camera pans, then you see that Michael is there....lurking in the shadows. Fantastic!

For those of you who don't know, this is about a boy that was institualized for killing his older sister on Halloween night. The one day, he escapes and heads back home to continue the killing. He picks one teen ( I wont' say why) and goes after her. If anyone gets in his way, then that's their problem. Along the way, his doctor, Dr. Loomis heads back to Michael's hometown in order to stop him. That's all I really want to say on the plot.

This is such a fantastic movie! It was a lot of suspense that will keep you glued to your seat. I can't say enough good things about Halloween.

The transfer to blu ray is wonderful! The sound is crisp and clear. The images are vivid and sharp. This is the way Halloween was meant to be seen. This has a fantastic extra. It's called "Fast Facts". If you set the setting's for the "Fast Facts" you get to see little facts about the movie (about the stars, production ect) that add a wonder aspect to a great movie.

This is a classic and a must have.』

(Disappointed)
『I like the Halloween story line. Jamie Lee Curtis is good. However, I was disappointed that it shows nudity. One of the girls boobs are showing several times. Why Hollywood thinks they have to put nudity in all the time is beyond me. I think it ruins the film. Otherwise, it's a great horror flick. Love the theme song. It is so fitting.』

Halloweenis as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especiallyPsycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter ofPsychovictim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character inPsycho. In the end, though,Halloweenstands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismalHalloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally grippingHalloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years.--Robert Horton

(Terrific!)
『I loved the movie and watched a part of a TV episode. I missed the humor that I liked in the movie. That being the case, I rarely watched Buffy when it was on TV, but a friend of mine is a great fan. I bought the first season for him for Christmas, and we have enjoyed watching it together. He remembers the episodes, but they are new to me. Great humor and suspense. Not sure how I missed it in the episode I originally saw.』

(Where it all began...)
『Many moons ago when I first came across Buffy in its first season, i watched a few episodes, laughed, but didn't totally get it--yet. By season 2, I was hooked. When I finally got a chance to really really watch season 1 on DVD again, wow, did i understand the magic that Joss Whedon had unleashed. You must watch this DVD if this is your first intro to Buffy. Will it look as clean, or be as pretty as everything following season 1, no--but who cares. You will fall in love with these characters and care about them right from the start. Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Cordelia, and of course Angel. The story lines in season one are so much fun to go back to just to see if you can play connect the dots with seasons 2 through 7. Pay particular attention to the first episode Welcome to the Hellmouth, and the last one, Prophecy girl, a ton of juicy stuff in there that sets the precedent for the later seasons. Joss Whedon rules!!!!!!

(BUFFY SEASON ONE)
『I LOVE BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.....it's my guilty pleasure! however the disc quality, sound, picture are not that great they could be better...but for the inexpensive price it was worth it!』

(Terrible video quality.)
『I love the show. The video quality of this DVD is terrible. One of the worst video transfers I've ever seen.』

(A mediocre start to a great series)
『I'm going to start out by saying that I love this show. I have to be one of the only guys in the world who likes this show. Now this was not the best season by a long shot. I don't think too many people even acknowledge this season. What it does is set the groudwork for future seasons. The plot and all the main characters are introduced nicely. The key problem with this season: low budget.

Now as many of you know, the series is based off a 1992 movie of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry, and Donald Sutherland. I haven't seen the movie, but I've heard it's horrible. Taking that into account, it is surprising that this show was ever concieved. Obviously, they didn't have a lot to work with. As a result, there are many problems with the first season. The costumes and makeup look kind of cheesy. The action scenes are not very well choreographed. I could be wrong, but I don't think many of the actors(with the exception of Anthony Stewart Head) had done much acting. I didn't think the acting was horrible, but it's not excellent either. The villian of this season, the master, is kind of lame. I got real tired of his quips and attempts at being scary. SPOILER ALERT. His fight with Buffy at the end of the season did not make any sense. How does Buffy easily kill the most powerful vampire on the planet when he easily killed her five minutes earlier?

Even with problems like these, the season is still okay. There were elements of this season that would get better with better writing and a bigger budget. For example, I saw right away that Xander is supposed to be the funny comic relief guy. Most of his little jokes weren't that funny in this season, but I could see that his delivery of those lines was excellent. And in later seasons, he does become a very funny character.

Overall, the season was okay. It interested me enough to get me to watch the second season. So if you want to get into a great television series, buy oor rent this DVD, suffer through it, and then you get to watch seasons two and three, some of the best television I've ever seen.』

『INTO EACH GENERATION A SLAYER IS BORN. Now you can own the entire first season of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. All 12 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 3-disc collector's edition. From "Welcome to the Hellmouth," "The Harvest" and "Angel" to "Nightmares," "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" and "Prophecy Girl," these Season One episodes are a must for every true Buffy fan.』
『Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) looks like your typical perky high-schooler, and like most, she has her secret fears and anxieties. However, while most teens are worrying about their next date, their next zit, or their next term paper, Buffy's angsting over the next vampire she has to slay. See, Buffy, a young woman with superhuman strength, is the "chosen one," and she must help rid the world of evil, namely by staking demons. The exceptional first season ofBuffy the Vampire Slayerintroduces us to the treacherous world of Sunnydale High School (where Buffy moved after torching her previous high school's gym). The characters there include "watcher" Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and the original "Scooby Gang" members--friendly geek Xander (Nicholas Brendon), computer whiz Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and snobbish popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter)--who aid Buffy in her quest. Those used to the darker tone thatBuffytook in its later seasons will be surprised by the lighter feeling these first 12 episodes have--it's kind of likeBuffy 90210as the cast grapples with regular teen problems in addition to saving the world from demonic darkness. Fans of the show will enjoy the crisp writing, the phenomenal chemistry of the cast (already well-established within the first few episodes), and the introduction to characters that would stay for many seasons, including moody vampire Angel (David Boreanaz). Through it all, Gellar carries the series with amazing confidence, whether conveying the despair of high school or dispatching various demons--she's one of TV's most distinctive and strongest heroines.--Mark Englehart

『I love these old 50's movies. "The Thing" was one of the best of that time. Real actors, acting like real people act!! Having this film on DVD is a must for young and old.』

(COULDN'T FIND IT BUT YOU HAD IT)
『My dad is 88 years old and this is the first movie he took my mom to. She remembered it as so scary. It was fun for me to watch them as they watched it together again after almost 60 years. They laughed at how corney it was but it brought back wonderful memories. Thank you for having it and thank you for getting it here in good shape and on time.』

(The Thing from another planet)
『Since I was just a young girl when this came out, it scared me so much that my father had to check in my closet and under my bed before I would go to sleep. My husband said he was walking home from the theater and walked in the middle of the road. Now we can laugh at it but it still was one of the classic scary movies.』

(By cracky I LOVE this movie!!!)
『I was just a year old when this came out. But since then I must have viewed it on my elbows more than twenty times. And I still get cold chills even now. Now admit it, if you can watch something that many times it has to have some appeal. Course it may be just me. But I'm sure my likeminded clones out there have the same feelings as I do. Don't you guys. See? You said yes didn't you?』

(Hawks Sets Another Trend)
『This is a review of the WB release of the DVD of the 1951 film entitled THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD which starred Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey, Robert Cornwithe, Douglas Spencer and, to quote critic Dave Kehr," James Arness in his most sympathetic role."
The films direction is credited to Christian Nyby but generally is ceded to veteran director Howard Hawks who is listed as the producer. THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD was adapted from a short story by Robert W. Campbell entitled "Who Goes There?"

This is a groundbreaking film because I believe that it was the first science fiction release that made a big impact on the burgeoning youth market of the fifties.
And why wouldn't THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD be popular? It has a tasty combination of science fiction and horror, scienctific research versus military might and more than a few references to the cold war and cold war paranoia.

In fact, it's set in the frozen arctic ice with the military battling scientists for the right to examine or destroy the "thing" which was found in a crashed flying saucer.
The unknown creature, frozen in a block of ice, is carted to the military/scientific out post where one "thing" after another goes wrong, threatening this little island of warmth and civilization.

When finally THE THING FROM ANTHER WORLD concludes, most audiences are wrung out
and I can only imagine the effect this exciting film had on the audiences of the early fifties.
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and THE THING has to be among the most flattered films of its time....or maybe any time.

All in all, this DVD of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD is a very nice print, with an extra uneleased scene included as well as the original trailer as an extra feature all at a bargain price. There are also subtitles in English, French and Spanish. I can't recommend this film highly enough and when you're not watching THE THING,make sure that you "watch the skys."

『Members of an Antarctic research team are killed off by a frozen alien they uncover.』
『With its modest special effects, lean plot, and small cast of lesser stars, this 1951 thriller remains a sturdy blueprint for fusing horror and science fiction. The formula has been employed countless times since, fleshed out with more extensive and elaborate production values, and manned by higher profiled marquee names, but the results have yet to improve onThe Thing from Another World, Howard Hawks's lone foray into sci-fi.

The story begins as military airmen are dispatched to a remote Arctic research station where scientists have detected the crash of a spacecraft. An effort to retrieve the saucer-shaped vehicle fails, but the team returns to the station with the frozen body of its sole occupant. When the extraterrestrial pilot is accidentally thawed, the crew, headed by a tough-talking pilot (Kenneth Tobey), grapples with a massive, chlorophyll-based humanoid (James Arness) thirsty for blood and in no mood for galactic diplomacy.

Hawks takes only a production credit for this low-budget exercise, but his filmmaking style transcends Christian Nyby's nominal direction: rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue, an ensemble of comrades whose professionalism is tempered by wisecracks, and unsentimental female characters (embodied by feisty romantic interest Margaret Sheridan) recall Hawks's signature works, while propelling the plot over any potential gaps in credibility. It's hardly surprising, then, thatThe Thing from Another Worldremains among the most influential science fiction movies ever shot, or that it remains exciting entertainment a half century later.--Sam Sutherland

『"Gremlins" is one of the great guilty pleasures of motion pictures. It's an absolute classic, tremendous fun every time you watch it. As one reviewer said, it's "a hoot".

Though "Gremlins" comes across as a perverse take on "It's a Wonderful Life" (the dis-connection is explicitly made within the film), one cannot overlook "Forbidden Planet". Just as the "Great Machine" allowed the Krells' inner demons to take physical form, so are the gremlins a representation of our normally suppressed murderous impulses. Otherwise, why would Billy Peltzer * be so careless about the rules?

This is not as much of an interpretive stretch as it seems. Most of the scenes in which the "bad" or unlikeable characters are punished or killed were removed from the final cut. Mrs. Deagle (the film's equivalent of Old Man Potter) is murdered in a grotesquely comic manner, but the scene which "justifies" her offing (she's forcing the bank to foreclose properties on which a chemical plant will be built) was deleted. (Though the director's desire to keep the film moving along is justifiable, most of these scenes should have been restored for home video.)

There's an element of Hitchcockian voyeurism in this. One of the film's "pleasures" is watching punishment meted out to those deserving it, through an agency (the gremlins) whose behavior we are not responsible for. Our "murdering id" can be vicariously gratified without legal or moral consequences.

"Gremlins" anticipates films like "Puppet Master", "Hostel", and "Saw", which tittillate the audience with scenes of people being murdered or mutilated in a graphic, detailed fashion. **

"Gremlins"' iconic scene, in which Billy's mother kills three of the gremlins -- by grinding up one in a mixer, stabbing another repeatedly, and (classically) blowing up one in a microwave oven -- was the one that most aroused audiences (both pro and con), as it cuts close to the bone of how we would /sometimes/ like to handle our personal problems. Mrs. Peltzer isn't just killing rats -- the gremlins are sentient, consciously malicious beings. Like, your boss, maybe?

The Blu-ray transfer ranks a B -- "Gremlins" was not a sharply detailed film in the first place. (The image quality suggests an excellent projection print, rather than the camera negative.) On the other hand, one can better appreciate the beautifully complex lighting. And let's not forget Jerry Goldsmith's terrific score, one of his best.

Unhesitatingly recommended.

* The name suggests the verb "pelts", which the gremlins are very good at.

** It wasn't the first. "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" (and its sequel) were quite gruesome, but nothing much was said about it.』

(Gremlins (Special Edition))
『When Billy Peltzer is given a small creature called a Mogwai by his father, he is unaware of the carnage he is about to encounter. There is a huge responsibility in looking after Gizmo as there are certain rules which must be followed. The Mogwai must be kept away from bright light, never made wet and never, ever be fed after midnight. When an accident occurs involving Gizmo and water, the next evolution stage of the Mogwai appears, and it isn't nice at all. Gremlins is a fantastic comedy movir from 1984. It's funny seeing the Gremlins cause mischief but it's also scary throughout-they're not exactly pretty creatures and are quite scary as well. This was one of Joe Dante's first movies and you can tell that everything he grew up with and movies he studied as a child are on-screen in Gremlins. A perfect movie made by the right director.

(Good, but hard to say who it was meant for....)
『Ok, so it IS an entertaining film and has lots of laughs despite how corny it is at times. What I can't figure out, though, is who this movie is supposed to be for. It's definitely not for little kids - there is far too much violence and blood (even though the blood is green). Bad Gremlins doing adult things and exploding in microwaves mean this is not a 90 minute babysitter for the little ones. Gremlins was one of the films that pushed the ratings board to create the PG-13 rating. On the other hand, teenagers&above will probably find it a bit too cutesy and childish to appeal to them. Whatever - at eight dollars, you're sure to find some use for it!』

(Great Movie)
『I've been watching this movie for years and it never gets old. People seem to criticize this movie a lot because it wasn't what they expect or too violent for children. To me, this movie is amazing. It's one of those movies that doesn't get old because it's for younger and older. So you can grow with it and still like it. Also, I think it's one of the first movies that mixed funny with dark, cute and cheesy, some people have a problem with that, but I see it as a movie with many layers. Sometimes you laugh other times you're scared and it seemed the movie didn't take itself too seriously which too many movies do. When watching this movie don't expect an oscar award performance, just a entertaining movie.』
『A man buys a Mogwai as a Christmas present for his son. The young boy is told to keep the pet away from water, out of the light and never to feed it after midnight. Inadvertently, the creature is dampened and almost instantly, produces half a dozen furry replicas of itself --which continue to multiply and turn the small town upside-down.』
Gremlinsis a whee of a film (if you don't mind the occasional gross-out) from producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante. Zach Galligan is the young man whose inventor father (Hoyt Axton) gives him an odd Christmas present: a tiny, furry creature that comes with a set of rules: don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and keep him away from direct sunlight. But Galligan breaks the first rule and the damp little critter pops out a dozen little offspring. Then the offspring break the second rule and, overnight, turn from cute furry guys to malevolent scaly guys with world domination on their mind. The only way to stop them: rule three. But it's an anxious (and extremely funny) battle to make it to daylight--and the bad gremlins find ways to multiply over and over. Great special effects and a gruesome sense of humor make this a wild (if occasionally dark and scary) ride.--Marshall Fine

(On Blu-Ray : good buy)
『Review on Blu-ray: a good buy, beautiful pics and crystal clear images.
On movie itself: i am a die-hard fan of Freddy and Jason, this movie is simply fun, fun and fun. I love it.』

(Gift)
『I got this as a gift for someone else, so all I can say is that it came within the specified time.』

(Best in the series!)
『I've been a fan of both Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street since the days when each chapter was released in theatres.
I know some folks are very defensive of the campy original Friday films but this is a excellent update that doesn't feel cheap.
The premise is good. Freddy's power comes from people's fear of him. Since that fear has waned in recent years, he resurrects Jason to stir up fear. When Jason starts killing Freddy's intended victims it becomes a no-holds-barred battle of the bad guys.
Very well done, enjoyable film for fans of these films.』

(Movie)
『This movie is not as good as the others of Freddy and Jason but I wanted the whole collection』

(Awesome)
『Two horror movie icons at each others throat what else can you ask for, well freddy vs jason just gives you that this movie is awesome』
『The slicer versus the slasher? Two titans of terror going at it mano-a-machete? They’re gonna kill each other a lot! The horror (and wicked fun) begins when Freddy realizes he can’t haunt dreams because folks no longer fear him. So he enlists Jason to do a little killing on his behalf on Elm Street. Presto, the fear is back – and so is Freddy. One problem: Jason isn’t aboutto stop offing people. And another: Freddy isn’t about to let Jason rule Elm Street. This means war. Freddy Vs. Jason. Winner kills all.』
『After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown ofFreddy vs. Jasonfinally arrives. After making their respective debuts inFriday the 13th(1980) andA Nightmare on Elm Street(1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins. It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, andBride of Chuckydirector Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when Freddy recruits Jason to slice 'n' dice the ill-fated teens who've forgotten Freddy's once-formidable reign of terror. While it logically connects the gruesome legacies ofNightmare's Elm Street andFriday's Camp Crystal Lake, this horror hybrid is shockingly uninspired. It briefly peaks when Freddy gives the unconscious Jason a dream-world pummeling, but their ultimate showdown's a draw. In the immortal words of Peggy Lee, is that all there is?--Jeff Shannon

(PSYCHO by alfred hitchcock (from amazon))
『outstanding! saw this movie when it first came out and you had to be seated before the movie started. the production specifics interesting, ingenious considering the era it was produced in. my friend said she saw it recently on TV (on demand) but watched my copy from Amazon and enjoyed it. The great classic from and in the style of the great Alfred Hitchcock from the mid 1950's. was supposed to be a quick and low budget film and it became a 'must see' classic. definitely a keeper.』

(A upgraded DVD edition, but: wait for a Blu-Ray edition that has been more recently remastered...)
『So much has been written about "Psycho" itself that a buyer of the "Legacy Series" DVD of the film is probably most interested in whether or not this is a better or worse DVD of the film than has been available before.

The "Legacy Series" edition of "Psycho" is a significant upgrade from prior DVD issues of the film. Nevertheless, it does not appear to be a recent high resolution re-telecine of the film elements. It appears to be merely a reprocessed and tweaked version of the same telecine source Universal has flogged over and over in a number of prior DVD editions. Dust and scratches have not been corrected, detail sizzle calls attention to itself, and the opening scene of the city skyline produce strobing as the camera pans.

Contrast and tonality suggest this was made from a release print, or release inter positive, not from the original negative or master interpositive. It looks much better than before, but it hardly the best the film could look. Even played back on an OPPO BDP-83, which some might argue has the best DVD up scaling technology currently available for home users, the image still has a number of source quality, telecine and codec related defects.

All of which leads one to ask: Where's the Blu-Ray edition of this film? AND When is Universal going to get serious about these Hitchcock re-issues and finally do a modern, 4k or better remaster of these films from the original negative or the master interpositive?

A great upgraded edition, but: wait for a Blu-Ray edition that has for sure been recently remastered from better film elements.

(Review of Alfred Hitchkock's PSYCHO)
『This is one of Hitchcock's gratest films. The commentary that goes with it is helpful.』

("A boy's best friend is his mother.")
『The 2008 special edition of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" brings to modern audiences the spine-chilling thrills of the original plus a great deal more. The digitally remastered print is impeccable and enables viewers to appreciate the set design; the chiaroscuro lighting in which sharp contrasts between light and dark add to the atmosphere of impending doom; and the amazing performances of the leads and the supporting cast. The brilliant Anthony Perkins fully inhabits Norman Bates's character and, for reasons that defy understanding, did not receive an Academy Award nomination as best actor. Also snubbed by the Academy was Bernard Hermann, whose iconic score was played entirely on stringed instruments. Every scene featuring Hermann's music is enhanced by it, especially the famous shower sequence that had audiences in 1960 screaming their heads off. The wonderful Janet Leigh was nominated for her believable portrayal of Marion Crane, an ordinary woman desperate to make a life for herself with the hunky John Gavin. Martin Balsam, a savvy character actor, is a private detective hired to track down Marion when she disappears. Vera Miles, Crane's sister, Lila, aggressively pursues any clue that will help her find Marion. Ultimately, however, Perkins's performance is the one that everyone remembers. His stuttering speech, darting eyes, birdlike movements, ghoulish taxidermy hobby, nervous munching, and references to his overbearing mother all combine to create a character for the ages.

Everything about this movie is carefully thought out and beautifully realized. Hitchcock planned every frame in advance, hired a talented and creative screenwriter, Joseph Stefano, a wonderful cinematographer, John Russell, and a skilled film editor, George Tomasini. The cast and crew worked tirelessly to put Hitchcock's vision on the screen. The shower scene alone took seven days to complete. The result is a terrifying and mesmerizing film that explores such themes as voyeurism, dysfunctional relationships, bad choices that wreck our lives, and the secrets and lies that entrap even the most average people.

The extras are eye-opening. They include informative feature commentary delivered by Stephen Rebello, author of "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho." Rebello helps us appreciate Hitchcock's ability to get around the stringent censorship code, his groundbreaking use of camera angles, and his juxtaposition of wry humor and horrific violence. In addition, the late Janet Leigh tells us how much she loved working with "Mr. Hitchcock," whom she respected greatly; she was happy to do whatever he asked of her. Stefano found Hitchcock to be warm and approachable, not at all a cold and forbidding auteur. We also hear from Hitchcock's daughter, Pat, and his assistant director, who notes Hitchcock's close attention to every detail, including lighting, set design, and special effects. In addition, there is archival footage of hundreds of people waiting on long lines to get into the film when it was first released, since no one was admitted after the show began. This gimmick inflamed people's curiosity and helped make "Psycho" a box office bonanza. Hitchcock's legacy is discussed by such luminaries as Martin Scorsese, who admits that he has frequently paid homage to Hitchcock, whom he considers to be one of the most imitated directors of all time. This superb two-disc set is a must-see for fans of "Psycho." Just one bit of advice: Don't watch it while you are in the house alone.

『Alfred Hitchcock's landmark masterpiece of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. No one knows that better than Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), the ill-fated traveler whose journey ends in the notorious "shower scene." First a private detective, then Marion's sister (Vera Miles) searches for her, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax where the mysterious killer is finally revealed.』
