(Dark City is Magnificent on Blu-ray)
『There are a plethora of reviews of the movie, but my review is mostly a comparison of the BD vs DVD version. I won't discuss its merits as movie.

I've seen its 2 DVD releases and finally BD. The DVD versions were consistently mastered in the best possible quality, although the DVD menu design is spartan and unimaginative.

DC is stellar in BD, and carries the reputation of fine digital mastering over to a new media. Rich, textured detail burst out in sets, costumes, CGI, and actor's faces to make DC a reference for video quality. One can watch the movie multiple times and see something new. The BD menus and extras are identical to the DVD version, except that both director's cut and theatrical releases are on the same disk.

Audio quality is crisp and clear, except it lacks more distributed imaging. This is the movie's principle drawback.

As DC exemplifies, its better to spend less on fancy BD disk menus and more to insure the highest video and audio quality is placed on disk, something we still do not see universally in many BD releases.

If you own DC on DVD, the BD is worth the upgrade price and a steal at $10, current as of this review.

(Great movie, outstanding picture! A must-see for sci-fi fans..)
『I was surprised by the quality of the digital film transfer. If you haven't seen this movie before, here's an excellent opportunity to know it. This is not a regular sci-fi movie, and I think this is really what makes it unique in the genre.

(Dark City the way Alex Proyas intended it to be.)
『While the original DVD release of Dark City is quite good it's here where Alex Proyas delivers an expanded story and rights some errors that were necessitated by the studio in its original 1998 release. Characters have been expanded further and the pace was tightened up on what I considered to be an excellent movie to begin with. It simply gets better in the director's cut.

The most notable change I've noticed was the removal of the narration at the beginning which simply gave away the film's secret far too early regarding "tuning". Also the opening sequence is shorter without any cutaways to the traffic and denizens of the city. Wordlessly, Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) checks his watch as it freezes at midnight, turns and walks away from the camera as if he were Marty Feldman beckoning you to "walk this way". On the original commentary on the 2001 DVD release Proyas stated that, regarding the original cut, he was pleased with 90% of it. The introductory sequence was a sizable chunk of that 10% he was unhappy with for it was the studio's decision and not his to spoon-feed the audience.

Afterwards it was the slow revealing of the nature of the city and the characters who inhabit it where the director's cut shines. Once past the abbreviated beginning the story now has a bit of extra time to develop the details further.

The director's cut DVD, while marred by the "Digital Copy" (Expired July 29, 2009, even though all DVDs are already digital copies of film/video to begin with) it has a much better picture when compared to the original 2001 flipper DVD release. It also boasts three commentary tracks: A version of Roger Ebert's original commentary with new interview details spliced in (you can tell which parts were spliced due to when Ebert got surgery performed on his jaw), a newly-recorded Alex Proyas commentary and finally commentary track with both Lem Dobbs and David Goyer. Three documentaries (totaling 82 minutes) help to flesh out an already spectacular thought-provoking film.

I wouldn't replace the old 2001 release with this DVD. I do prefer Ebert's more detailed commentary on the 2001 DVD release. And, like Ebert's commentary, the other commentary tracks are different enough to render the original release worth keeping. It is also missing the "Find Shell Beach" interactive "game" (more along the lines of "find all the easter eggs for a kitschy little animation") and some other lesser features such as the pan'n'scan 4:3 version of the film. New Line has always done excellent DVD's for their "Platinum Series". And, if you don't have the 2001 version, it can be found cheap.

With the discovery of a lengthier and more complete version of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" found in Buenos Aires, Dark City whets the appetite for its inspiration. And, within these links of films, I wonder how much of an influence Dark City had on 1999's "The Matrix".

I'm not disappointed by this DVD. It was an impulse buy for me for $15 at a brick'n'mortar store a couple years ago. The price is even better now on Amazon. It's a cut which has the fans of Dark City and neo-noir science fiction in mind.

(The human laboratory)
『Dark City (1998), directed by Alex Proyas (I, Robot), is a film noir sci-fi which plays tribute to much older black and white silent films like Metropolis, and Nosferatu. Kiefer Sutherland portrays a rather mad scientist (Dr. Daniel Schreber) who assists aliens in their experiments on the humans trapped in this artificial world. Every night the city is shifted into new configurations, and the people are given new memories. These aliens, "Strangers", are endangered parasites with a collective consciousness, who are experimenting on humans so as to analyze the "nature verses nurture" concept of the human hosts in their hope to find a way to survive. John Murdoch is one human that has accidentally awoken during the night and is now beyond the control of the Strangers. As he's trying to make sense of the world that he finds himself in, the aliens are trying to track him down. William Hurt also appears in the film as a tough guy inspector, who begins to suspect that Murdoch might be telling the truth. Jennifer Connelly is Emma, John Murdoch's wife.

The Matrix film, which came out a year later, shares many similar qualities. As in the Matrix, there is a protagonist who discovers that he has the ability to manipulate the virtual world that he is living in. And as in the Matrix, the humans are being used, mostly unbeknownst to them, by an alien race. Both films question notions about reality, perception, and identity.

The blu-ray extended cut has 15 extra minutes compared to the theatrical release. In these extra minutes the director has added some additional scenes that help to further develop the characters. Also, in the extended cut, the director has eliminated the voice over that was originally heard at the beginning of the film on the theatrical version of the film.』

(Dark City provides bright blu-ray!)
『Always loved this movie! The blu-ray brightens the heart of the viewer with crisp images and full sound (LOVE that soundtrack!). The Director's Cut is the same as the anniversary dvd, but after seeing this on blu-ray, well... And this came with the Digital Copy, so I can enjoy this movie on the road on my PSP as well.』
『The critically-acclaimed triumph from visionary director Alex Proyas (I, Robot, The Crow) is back with a brand new directors cut featuring enhanced picture and sound, never-before-seen footage and three commentary tracks that take you deeper than ever before into the world of one of sci-fis most exciting and revered tales. When John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) wakes with no memory at the scene of a grisly murder, he soon finds himself hunted by the police, a woman claiming to be his wife and a mysterious group of pale men who seem to control everything and everyone in the city. Starring Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist), Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), William Hurt (A History of Violence) and Kiefer Sutherland (TVs 24).』
『If you're a fan of brooding comic-book antiheroes, got a nihilistic jolt fromThe Crow(1994), and share director Alex Proyas's highly developed preoccupation for style over substance, you might be tempted to callDark Cityan instant classic of visual imagination. It's one of those films that exists in a world purely of its own making, setting its own rules and playing by them fairly, so that even its derivative elements (and there are quite a few) acquire their own specific uniqueness. Before long, however, the film becomes interesting only as a triumph of production design. And while that's certainly enough to grab your attention (Blade Runneris considered a classic, after all), it's painfully clear thatDark Cityhas precious little heart and soul. One-dimensional characters are no match for the film's abundance of retro-futuristic style, so it's best to admire the latter on its own splendidly cinematic terms. Trivia buffs will be interested to know that the film's 50-plus sets (partially inspired by German expressionism) were built at the Fox Film Studios in Sydney, Australia, home base of director Alex Proyas and producer Andrew Mason. The underground world depicted in the film required the largest indoor set ever built in Australia.--Jeff Shannon

『I ordered Constantine and got another DVD instead. I shipped back Constantine at shippers request. Haven't received Constantine yet. Please credit my credit card as it's been to long. I no longer want the DVD.
Thanks, Al Pins』

(Constantine a classic)
『I have always liked Constantine. This is the second set I have bought. The first was worn out. The storyline is different and full of little twists. Keanu Reeves, does another stunning job of acting.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Cheers.............Shane (Australia)』

(Constantine Excellent Movie)
『Constantine is a great movie. It is based on the comic book series Hellblazer, and is about a Con-man/Magician. In the movie, Constantine played by Keanu Reeves, is hired to investigate a suicide, that leads him into the middle of a war between Heaven and Hell. It is a solid movie, one of my favorite Comic book to movie adaptation. The Visual effects are intense, and the story keeps you interested. If you have never read the comic, the movie does a good job on its own. A suggestion would be to pick up the comic and read it before you watch this movie, so it is more enjoyable.』
『Warner Brothers Constantine (Blu-ray)In the grand scheme of theological thrillers, Constantine aspires for the greatness of The Exorcist but ranks more closely with The Order. Based on the popular Hellblazer comic book series, and directed with nary a shred of intelligence by music video veteran Francis Lawrence, it's basically The Matrix with swarming demons instead of swarming machines. Keanu Reeves slightly modifies his Matrix persona as John Constantine, who roams the dark-spots of Los Angeles looking for good-evil, angel-devil half-breeds to ensure that "the balance" between God and Satan is properlymaintained. An ancient artifact and the detectivetwin of a woman who committed evil-induced suicide (Rachel Weisz) factor into the plot, which is taken so seriously that you'll want to stand up and cheer when Tilda Swinton swoops down as the cross-dressing angel Gabriel and turns this silliness into the camp-fest it really is. The digital effectsare way cool (dig those hellspawn with the tops of their heads lopped off!), so if you don't mind ajuvenile lesson in pseudo-Catholic salvation, Constantine is just the movie for you!』

(Doesn't play on non-Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player)
『I am a Blu-ray noob, but I could not get past the BD-Live features of this disc and watch the movie. It did play on another player, but it was slow, and the Skynet menus, etc., did not add anything worthwhile. I would avoid this version since Amazon does not allow returns if it doesn't work in your equipment. Get the non-Skynet version instead.

I do give it 2 stars because it is still a great movie, but the picture quality, while better than DVD, is not up to newer HD releases if you have a screen capable of 1920 resolution.

(Great video quality, even better that recent movies transfers)
『First, I'm not a BIG fan of terminator, but I have a decent collection of Blu-rays and I can safely say that this one looks way better that the average blu-ray.

There's almost no "noise" in the video.

The only low point of this movie is that the movie takes forever to start, thanks to he skynet feature and all the menus in between.』

(Blu-ray unnecessary here)
『Not exactly blu-ray quality, it looked more like an up convert. I would probably just stick with the DVD here.』

(Great video and sound.... Best Version yet)
『I have read many of the reviews on the amazon page and frankly i have no idea what some of these people are saying... I own the panasonic dmp-bd30 and i had no trouble at all with this new version of T2. It loaded in just under 2 minutes and i accessed all the versions with absolutely no problems at all. This is bar none the best available version out there right now.The sound is fantastic and the video is flawless.A must own for any Terminator Fan.』

(T2 blu-ray "PROBLEM SOLVED")
『I realize "PROBLEM SOLVED" is a rather LARGE SWEEPING statement, but for me it was true. I just purchased T2 SKYNET BLU RAY today. I was very skeptical after reading so many BAD REVIEWS about the disc not playing in so many players. I own a SONY BDP S350, I don't have a large collection but I have a varied one, about 50 or so,(NO TROUBLE WITH ANY OF THEM), until now. I put the disc in,it loaded in about 2 minutes(not bad,I was expecting much longer) it told me that I was not connected to my computer (IT WAS RIGHT,I AM NOT CONNECTED) the menu came up, it told me to select the VERSION OF THE FILM I wanted to see, I moved the cursor to the third selection that allows you to enter in the code, which I did (8 2 9 9 7) the screen changed and said I could now play the(SPECIAL EXTENDED VERSION) I pushed ENTER (BIG MISTAKE-BIG MISTAKE) it took me through all the logo's THX - CANAL STUDIO - ETC. then it went to BLACK for at least 20 minutes - I shut it off and started the whole process again, this time I did it with all the versions of the film and the same thing happened each time. Needless to say I was beyond FRUSTRATED and thinking of different ways to DESTROY THE DISC. My wife came along (SHE CONSTRUCTS WEB SITES FOR A LIVING) she said go to the menu enter the code (8 2 9 9 7) wait for the screen to change - (DO NOT PRESS ENTER)- move the cursor to the RIGHT to BROWSE TIMELINE - (PRESS ENTER) - the first chapter of the movie pops up in a small box below the BROWSE TIMELINE - she said NOW PRESS ENTER - BINGO - the SPECIAL EXTENDED VERSION PLAYED WITHOUT A HITCH - PROBLEM SOLVED. If anyone else is having the same problem I hope this works for you -GOOD LUCK.』

(The Best Christmas Carol Adaptation)
『I first saw this film many years ago and I have to say, there hasn't been another adaptation of Charles Dickens' story that I liked better. I know a lot of people rank the one with Alastair Sim as their favorite, but I have to rank it 2nd to this one. Playing Scrooge here is George C. Scott, best known for his Oscar-winning performace in Patton. He plays the character so well that I'm sure Dickens would have hand-picked himself. From the Scrooge in the beginning into the friendly soul in the end, Scott performs with extraordinary skill. David Warner, who plays Bob Crachit, also puts in a fine performance, even though I'm used to seeing him play a villan. If you are unsure about which version of "A Christmas Carol" to see, choose this version as you will be blown away. As for the DVD, the picture and audio quality is probably as good as a DVD gets, I hope since Sim's version went to Blu-ray, Scott's is on its way.』

(Great Movie)
『I have several versions of this movie. George C. Scott does a great job as Scrooge. I recommend this version.』

(Best. Scrooge movie. Ever. Period. End of review.)
『Well, almost the end.

I have seen every version there is and am delighted to report that this particular one stands head and shoulders above all the rest, for all the reasons elsewhere herein articulated. I would add that the remarks about George C. Scott supposedly "overacting" produced a wide grin of bemusement; for a true example of overacting the role of Ebenezer Scrooge--even whilst being remarkably reined in--see Carrey, first name Jim. (One of my favorite comic actors of all time but utterly and embarrassingly miscast for this role. He never says "bah" or "humbug" one time either, which itself is a humbug, almost sacrilege for A Christmas Carol. Sorry, Jim.>:^D)

There is no hyperbole in stating that George C. Scott was arguably one of the best if not the best actor of our age. Mr. Scott yet stands as the sine qua non of the dramatic art and the standard against which nearly all others may be judged (IMHO, though I clearly am not alone in this assessment). He embodies and then conveys the "spirit" of his characters as well as anyone could imagine it being done, and none moreso than his elaborately nuanced depiction of the miserly Scrooge. All the other actors in the film, as well as the set designers, costumers and directors, do their jobs convincingly enough that we find ourselves completely enmeshed in the picture, almost as if it WERE 3-D--only minus the clumsy glasses and without all the characters' skin resembling latex rubber.

This has to be one of the all-time quality champions of low-budget filmmaking. So well done is it that a heart as cold and hard as Scrooge's must beat in the chest of any not moved to at least one tear whilst watching this glorious treasure. It has definitely become a cherished part of our holiday season, as our family curls up in delicious anticipation with the hot chocolate beside a crackling fire every Christmas Eve without fail to revel in this story's transcendent message and in the majesty of a cinematic masterwork. In the words of Bob Cratchit, "A triumph, my dear, another triumph!"

Enjoy!』

(STILL the BEST Version of A Christmas Carol)
『I have seen ALL the theatrical versions available of "A Christmas Carol" to date, and this one in my opinion is STILL the best overall BAR NONE! It captures the essence of Dicken's classic tale in almost EVERY way. And the performances are superb! IMHO, The late George C. Scott's performance as Ebeneezer Scrooge stands above all the rest, even Patrick Stewart's. While I'm sure the new 3D animated version currently in theaters is entertaining, especially for children, this classic&timeless tale is always conveyed best when performed by REAL actors rather than animated characters.』

(Production Error!!)
『Yes, yes, yes, the movie is great, per many other people's reviews here. However, the copy I received was in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, rather than the full-screen 1.33:1 which it should have been (and as was indicated on the back of the case). So, until this production issue is fixed, I recommend NOT buying this movie for now, unless you like seeing the tops of people's hairlines cut off. I don't know why something like this would happen, but then, I don't work for Fox Entertainment, who seem to attract much vitriol from people these days...』
『Christmas elicits nothing more than "Bah, humbug!" from Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott), a miser whose sole pursuit of financial success has left him a bitter and lonely old man. But a Christmas Eve visit from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future ultimately teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family.』
『In the same year that he directed a handsome version ofThe Scarlet Pimpernelfor television, Clive Donner also made this worthy 1984 small-screen production of the Dickens tale. George C. Scott can't quite muster a decent English accent, but he does bring some new colors to this movie's interpretation of Scrooge, making the character less nasty for the sake of nastiness and more a product of a life of lovelessness. The supporting cast is first-rate, and the production is far more handsome than most TV fare.--Tom Keogh

(It's really a dog)
『This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I thought the acting was bad, the special effects were bad, the plot was bad... pretty much everything. I kept finding myself waiting for the movie to end. Out of the last 50 movies I've seen, this is the worst. There are marginal movies out there where you think, "Well, at least it was worth watching once." This is not one of them. You know it's bad, when the actors have to come in periodically and "explain" what's going on. I found the only funny parts were maybe 5 minutes total. The remaining 2+ hours were time wasted. The Blu-ray transfer was decent, but if you have not seen this movie before, be sure to borrow/rent it before you consider buying it.』

(Banal)
『This film assumes to be satricial and comedic. However, the inaccuracies in the relating of history and theological doctrine overwhelm any statement or humor this movie attempts to portray.』

(great movie)
『i love kevin smith movies and this is an example of his hilarious yet contraversial humor % stars well earned by me』

(One of our favorites)
『Dogma is a movie with comedy, drama, and a wonderful look at religion. It watches almost like a parody, and with the language and some crude humor, it would be very easy to get offended, but watch it with an open mind and you will see the real story. Rufus, the black 13th apostle, gives us some great insight into what we really should be doing as followers of Christ. He gives a line to the effect of, 'You guys took a great thing and built a religion around it.' Plus, Alan Rickman is a very attractive Metatron!』

(lol)
『Best movie ever! I wasnt sure about it but I really enjoyed this movie shipping was REALLY fast And Dogma was just a blast to watch thank you!』
『One of the most talked-about movies of the year is also one of the funniest! In this hilarious comic fantasy from writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks,Chasing Amy) two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) find a loophole that would get them back into Heaven. The only snag? They'll be destroying existence in the process. In an effort to stop them, The overworked Voice of God (Alan Rickman)taps cynical mortal Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to save the world by preventing the angels from reaching their unholy destination: New Jersey! Throw in two unlikely prophets named Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith), the quick-witted yet little-known thirteenth apostle (Chris Rock) and a sexy, former muse with a case of writer's block (Selma Hayek) and you've got an hysterical and thrilling race against time packed with an all-star cast.』
『Kevin Smith is a conundrum of a filmmaker: he's a writer with brilliant, clever ideas who can't set up a simple shot to save his life. It was fine back when Smith was making low-budget films likeClerksandChasing Amy, both of which had an amiable, grungy feel to them, but now that he's a rising director who's attracting top talent and tackling bigger themes, it might behoove him to polish his filmmaking. That's the main problem withDogma--it's an ambitious, funny, aggressively intelligent film about modern-day religion, but while Smith's writing has matured significantly (anyone who thinks he's not topnotch should take a look atChasing Amy), his direction hasn't. It's too bad, becauseDogmais ripe for near-classic status in its theological satire, which is hardly as blasphemous as the protests that greeted the movie would lead you to believe.

Two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) have discovered a loophole that would allow them back into heaven; problem is, they'd destroy civilization in the process by proving God fallible. It's up to Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), a lapsed Catholic who works in an abortion clinic, to save the day, with some help from two so-called prophets (Smith and Jason Mewes, as their perennial characters Jay and Silent Bob), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a sexy, heavenly muse (the sublime Salma Hayek, who almost single-handedly steals the film). In some waysDogmais a shaggy dog of a road movie--which hits a comic peak when Affleck and Fiorentino banter drunkenly on a train to New Jersey, not realizing they're mortal enemies--and segues into a comedy-action flick as the vengeful angels (who have a taste for blood) try to make their way into heaven. Smith's cast is exceptional--with Fiorentino lending a sardonic gravity to the proceedings, and Jason Lee smirking evilly as the horned devil Azrael--and the film shuffles good-naturedly to its climax (featuring Alanis Morissette as a beatifically silent God), but it just looks so unrelentingly...subpar. Credit Smith with being a daring writer but a less-than-stellar director.--Mark Englehart

(Disney Has Done It Again!)
『I collect the Disney Classics and this new Blu-Ray did not dissapoint. It was beautifully remastered in both picture quality and audio. The colors are so amazing in this upgrade and the characters we fell in love with as children are just as grand as they once were. This is a wonderful gift idea for anyone. Highly recommend!』

(A Magical Restoration)
『It wasn't until a friend of mine showed me the restored version of this particular Disney classic that I realized what wonders it really does for an older animated film.
Sleeping Beauty is brought back to life in this platinum edition with fully restored color and special features disc.
A great investment for sure, and nothing beats having the ability to watch the classic magic of Disney at your fingertips.』

(Classic Disney Movie)
『My granddaughter is 2 years old and she has watched Sleeping Beauty so many times she has memorized some of the scenes! We recently bought a Blu-ray player and purchased this new DVD and the color is spectacular. This is still a classic Disney movie for everyone.』

(Actually, this is pretty boring)
『I bought this for my daughter, thinking this would be a fun family-night movie. I'll admit I don't particularly love the "princess" genre of Disney movie, and this met my low expectations. I'm sorry I bought it because I doubt my daughter will ever want to watch it again.』

(Classic Movie)
『This is a wonderful movie and the restored version is crisp, clean and superbly crafted. This was an excellent purchase. The blu-ray version of Sleeping Beauty was money well spent.』
『Awaken your senses to the majesty of SLEEPING BEAUTY, Walt Disney's classic fairy tale. See more than you've ever seen before through the magic of state-of-the-art technology, and experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance, in the way Walt envisioned it pristine, beautiful, utterly breathtaking. SLEEPING BEAUTY will transform your home into a fantastic world your family will want to experience again and again.

In the original story, Princess Aurora sleeps for 100 years before being awakened by a prince's kiss. In the Disney version, Prince Philip comes to her rescue much sooner.
George Brun's orchestral score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, expertly blended famous themes from Tchaikovsky's ballet.
With a budget that exceeded $6 million in 1959, this was Walt Disney's most lavish and expensive animated feature to date.
Determined to make the characters as realistic as possible, Disney had a live action film shot with actors posing as Sleeping Beauty, the Prince, and Maleficent, for the animators to use.
New York Times critic Bosley Crowther called the fight between Prince Philip and Maleficent the noisiest and scariest go-round he (Disney) has ever put into one of his films.

『Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney'sSnow White and the Seven Dwarfstaunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

On the DVD
Sleeping Beautywas the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look ofSnow WhiteandPinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However,Sleeping Beautysuffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements ofSnow Whiteand a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip.Sleeping Beautywas originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. (Rated G: violence)--Charles Solomon

(Love it!)
『How can anyone not love a vampire series that is crazy and racey! I bought this dvd for my parents for xmas and they love it! (Or they will, and I know I will!) I got the best deal on a new dvd for Blu-Ray here, so I am so thankful for that. Instead of spending $60 bucks on this, I spent like 20? :)』

(TrueBlood Fan)
『It has been quite some time since I had HBO. When I heard all the fuss about True Blood though, I had to check it out. Living in the UK, I waited with anticipation for the first episode to air over here. I'll admit, I was really thrown off by the rather graphic sex scenes at first, I had to make sure we were watching what I thought we were watching. I'm not a prude by any means, it just threw me off. Once I got over the initial surprise though, I loved the show!!! We made it for 3 weeks before I decided I couldn't survive one episode a week and just ordered the complete season one!』

(Addictive)
『Addictive!! Thats how i describe this show, simply addictive. I love vampires and their world and this show gives a new fresh feeling to a well known subject. Heads Up Book Fans!!! I have read all of books in The Southern Vampire Mysteries and the show is not precisely based on the books, more like loosely inspired by. We have the same characters we love, some of the same rules and the basic story-line. But the series is definitely independent. Still i love it; is a great vampire show, not necessarily a good book translation, but a great show nonetheless.

If you are looking for a sexy (bordering horny), character-driven (a lot of drama going on), supernatural drama this is your show. Get it, banned the minors from the room, and enjoy!!!

However if you are expecting to see a play-by-play of the book you might want to get it borrowed or rented first instead of buying. To be fair to the production of this show the first season basically encompasses the ups and downs of young Telepath Sookie Stackhouse and the beggining of her involvement in a fantastic world she never dream could possibly exist; close enough to how it goes on the first book, Dead Until Dark.』

(Best new show 2008!)
『I fell in love with this show from the very first show. It has the depth and breadth of a really good crime drama, the suspense of a great mystery, and amazing special effects and science fiction elements. This has become one of my all time favorite shows and I could not wait to get it on blu ray to see it again and again.』

(Buy Season One, but Rent Season Two)
『Whether you're in to vampire movies or not, you'll get drawn in to this series. It is an imaginative, original story line with some good spins and a nice sprinkle of romance, humor, and a little thrill. The good thing is, you won't spend too much time in front of the tube, because Season Two starts to drag on and wraps it up nice enough that you'll be glad it's over. I have friends that have read the complete book series, and they are still waiting on Season 3, but for the rest of us that have not read the books, we're not looking forward to any more episodes.』
『TRUE BLOOD chronicles the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps... where vampires have emerged from the coffin, and no longer need humans for their fix. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, Academy Award®-winner for “The Piano”) works as a waitress at the rural bar Merlotte's. Though outwardly a typical young woman, she keeps a dangerous secret: she has the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Her situation is further complicated when the bar gets its first vampire patron - 173-year old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer, "Quills") - and the two outsiders are immediately drawn to each other. Delivering the best of what audiences have come to expect from Creator and Executive Producer Alan Ball (writer of Oscar®-winning Best Picture "American Beauty", creator of the Emmy® Award-winning HBO®series “Six Feet Under"), TRUE BLOOD is a dark and sexy tale that boldly delves into the heart - and the neck - of the Deep South.』
『Alan Ball’sTrue Bloodseries works well for television, as it has enough sensationalism to tantalize and enough story girth to make the viewer care about the characters. That one can finally invest emotion into monsters, including an undead Civil War victim, a transformer who can shapeshift into various animals, and a female mind reader, speaks volumes about America’s willingness to accept fantasy. Of course, television has always produced good fantasy shows (I Dream of Genie), butTrue Blood’sSouthern Goth brand of fun horror is more macabre and more perverse, not to mention gorier, than most shows of its kind to date. Adapted from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels,True Bloodthrills because of its equal blend in each episode of erotica, humor, tragedy, mystery, and fantasy.

Set in a rural, swampy Louisiana parrish, the show centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her clan, sweet grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) and air-headed brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Illicit love is spawned early on, when Sookie saves vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood stolen in the parking lot of Merlotte’s diner, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who completes what will form a complex love triangle. As tensions between Sookie’s suitors loosen or tighten, many side plots, such as her African American best friend Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) struggle with an alcoholic, Bible-thumping mother and her brother’s dangerous crush on drug addicted hippie, Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan), keep one wondering who will succeed in this podunk place. The main tension throughout, however, is a race war waged between vampires and humans. As murders of “fang bangers” occur (human girls who let vampires bitethem) and dumb policeman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) fails to find clues, one sees the metaphorical implications of vampirism and feels deeper resonance with what can be a downright trashy show. Gossip galore, especially about what kinds of babies interbreeding will produce, is rampant. One of the funniest characters is Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), who deals drugs, works as a fry cook, and services the local white politicians, while making sure he’s always up in everyone’s business.

What makesTrue Bloodsmarter than pure soap opera is the parallels it draws between its monster mash and actual, familiar societal problems. Sookie and her friends watch the news, where Evangelicals bash vampires and prohibit mixed marriage, and everyone is addicted to V, a.k.a vampire blood, that effects like psychedelic heroin. Even its gore reflects a mix of serious and silly, as vampires explode into red, sticky goop. Though it may not be attempting to qualify for the best vampire footage ever shot,True Bloodis as addictive as that substance the town’s youth obsesses over, which is a metaphor in itself. --Trinie Dalton

(A splendid updating on Blu-ray of one of the all-time classics)
『I give the new Blu-ray five stars despite being a little irritated with the lack of an option to buy a nice, single disc version of hte Blu-ray. I got all of the set through Netflix and saw it that way. I would very much like to won THE WIZARD OF OZ on Blu-ray, but I'm going to hold out for a less expensive single or two-disc edition. Mind you, I like the film; but that is what I like, the film not disc after disc of extras that for the most part are repackagings of earlier editions.OK, that is my beef, and having made it, let me move on.

The Blu-ray is a definite improvement in the overall quality of the film, though not as much as one might have hoped for if you have watched the DVD on a up-conversion DVD player. This is not a problem restricted merely to this. Most of the older classics seem to have reached the point of diminishing returns on DVD. Even epic films like John Ford's THE SEARCHERS shows minimal improvement on Blu-ray. Still, even if the improvement isn't as marked as on more recent films, it is still definite.

But frankly, I think I loved the movie just as much when I was a kid watching it on my parents' old black and white tube TV. We all know the story about the film these days, that it was a critical and box office failure when it first was released. And we know all the stories about it. Buddy Ebsen being forced to drop out of the project when the make up that was sprayed on him caused a serious lung reaction. How Judy Garland took over the role when a deal to trade Jean Harlow and Clark Gable to Warner Brothers for a film so that MGM could get Shirley Temple, a deal that fell through when Shirley Temple died. We know all the songs, all the skits, and a host of the lines. And most importantly we have experienced firsthand how the film became a hit years after its first release because of its annual showings on television, hosted by Olivia DeHavilland (which never made a great deal of sense to me, since he had no connection to the film and had spend her studio career with Warner Brothers rather than MGM). Television was responsible for THE WIZARD OF OZ being the hit it became. But despite its success in the television era, it is almost impossible to understand how it failed to become an instant classic. The songs are irresistible, the performances classic, and the art design unmatched at the time. Scene after scene is filled with one perfect touch after another, like a peacock that strolls around in the background when Dorthy and the Scarecrow meet the Tin Man for the first time. Or the way the Cowardly Lion's tail twitches all the time (it is a subtle effect, but imagine how static he would be if he tail always drooped). It is a beautifully structured film, marvelously photographed, and beautifully scripted. The entire production is magical.

And this is a film that generations share. I remember vividly the terror I felt as a child watching Dorothy's friends come after her in the witch's fortress. Nothing in my childhood scared me more than Later it was the first movie that I watched with my daughter on TV (barely verbal at the time, she for several weeks referred to the film as "Scary Apples," for obvious reasons). My daughter probably watched the movie on VHS a hundred times minimum, largely because Dorothy was at the time one of the few female heroes around (this was before the Era of Buffy), and when she and I were stranded on a ski lift that was stopped during a sudden lightening storm immediately outside Flagstaff, Arizona, I kept her calm by retelling the entire movie, no mean feat given the lightening flashing all around us (though thankfully there was little rain).

This truly is one of those classics that it is impossible to imagine going away. The film is, if anything, as popular today as it has ever been. And conversions of it into new media like this new Blu-ray will guarantee that each generation will continue to rediscover it.』

(A favorite)
『The Wizard of Oz, being the classic film that it is, deserves to be well done. I'd gotten used to seeing the substandard version and just assumed that "fuzz" was normal. I had a few film buffs with me when we first viewed the Anniversary Digital Copy [Blue-ray] and what a difference it made. We all saw things for the first time that couldn't be seen in previous video viewings. Great!!!』

(THE WIZARD OF OZ)
『LOVE THE BLU-RAY VERSION. THE DIFFERENCE IS INCREDIBLEThe Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition with Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]』

(Nice extras but DRM prevents it from playing on my PC)
『I'd like to say the video quality was spectacular but unfortunately this Blu-ray movie won't play on my PC using ArcSoft Total Media Theater 3 Platinum. (I'm feeding it into a HDCP projector) I am just about ready to throw in the towel and buy a regular player. This may be the last Blu-Ray movie I buy. It's no wonder people are pirating movies, they play on everything!』

(Review of DVD)
『Purchased as a gift for my son and 3 year old grandson. No problems, excellent quality recording (so my son reported), delivered when promised.』
『In this charming film based on the popular L.Frank Baum novel, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she encounters some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

『When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939,The Wizard of Ozdidn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And whileOz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor),The Wizard of Ozmay not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages.--Jeff Shannon

(Grinch DVD)
『I remember watching this show every Christmas when I was a kid. I've ordered it so that now I can watch it with my children. I love it.』

(The original and the BEST!)
『The Original Grinch is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies! I am so glad to have it in my Christmas collection!』

(Quality good, color bad/)
『The video quality of both movies is good. As good as originally broadcast, which was very flat looking compared to today's work. However, the Grinch is the wrong color, dingy yellow, not green. This probably won't affect children seeing it for the first time, but it kind of ruins it for nostalgic watchers.』

(A Great Christmas Tale)
『The story about Whoville and the Grinch is a wonderful Christmas Tale. Everyone else has talked about the songs, Max and, of course, Cindy Lou Who. However, the story is also one of true Christmas sentiments. There is redemption, changing of the Grinch's heart, and the indomitable spirit of all of the Who's and their recognition that even without the Roast Beast and the toys, Christmas is still Christmas. What a clear and gentle message. (And how much fun, too!)』

(Still a classic)
『Having obviously seeing this every year for the passed, say, many years, I did have a VHS copy of this. It was a natural progression to upgrade to the DVD version. Despite the previous reviewers about missing extras. I came to purchase this for the short alone. It is gorgeous in color, as it has been cleaned up. Seems we got so used to the tv version, which has faded quite a bit.
Am pleased not only for the superb quality, but the low price.
A classic that can be viewed anytime!
5 stars!』

『Every Who down in Who-ville likes Christmas a lot&; But the Grinch who lived just north of Whoville did NOT! So the cuddly as a cactus Grinch (with termites in his smile and garlic in his soul) tries to wipe out Christmas for the cheerful Who-villians, only to discover: Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more! Magnificently narrated by Boris Karloff and animated by cartoon legend Chuck Jones, it's an award-winning Who-roast-beast-feast of a holiday classic!』
『This all-time classic now hasHorton Hears a Who!on the same video for a great double bill.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
To heck with the kids--this is one of the best holiday presents you can give yourself. Adapted from the children's book by Dr. Seuss, this charming story is one to watch every holiday season. It is just edgy enough to help you forget the more cloying aspects of Christmas, yet it is also sweet enough to remind you of the reason for all that holiday cheer. Animation genius Chuck Jones directed this 1966 television production featuring the voice of Boris Karloff as the mean greenie. Bitter and selfish, the Grinch decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, the sweet little folk who live at the bottom of his mountain home. When little Cindy Loo Who returns his hateful act with kindness, she melts the old miser's heart. There are many reasons to watch this: inventive wordplay, Karloff's impressive narration, and a very memorable soundtrack.--Rochelle O'Gorman

Horton Hears a Who!
Chuck Jones was chief animator on this lively adaptation of the famous book by Dr. Seuss. The story of a friendly elephant named Horton who discovers--deep inside a daisy--a tiny city called Whoville with tiny, intelligent residents--this film (fleshed out a bit from the source) is strong on character and has striking, appealing visuals. The little folks of Whoville, with theirnatural air of aristocracy, are a kick, and when they come to see Horton as a hero for his democratic view of all life big and small, the effect is quite touching. This should be a real treat for kids already familiar with the book, and just might inspire those who haven't read it to pick it up.--Tom Keogh
