(Love and Magic)
『I searched and found this wonderful movie on DVD. This is a story of life, love lost and in the possibilities that life and a touch of magic, could bring a new future. The DVD arrived in excellent condition, although I don't like the type of case it came in, but that does not take away from the wonderful and wistful feeling that the movie leaves inside me after I watch it.』

(Great Movie. It took 3 1/2 weeks to get here but it did get here so thats what counts.)
『Love this movie. It's one of my favorites. It was accurately described and when I sent an email asking where it was they emailed me back quickly. However it took 3 1/2 weeks to get here which is a really long time. But..... it did finally get here.』

(LOVED THIS MOVIE!)
『THIS MOVIE IS MOSTLY FOR WOMEN, BUT IT IS A FUN AND ENCHANTING STORY AND THE SCENERY AND PLACE WHERE THIS MOVIE WAS FILMED REALLY IS BEAUTIFUL...... A VERY QUAINT TOWN FILMED ON FRIDAY HARBOR IN MAIN. YOU WANT TO GET UP AND MOVE THERE! THE HOUSE IS BREATHTAKING.....I FOUND IT THE KIND OF MOVIE THAT I COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN....IT WAS FUN AND HAD A BIT OF EVERYTHING IN IT....NOT TO MENTION TWO BEAUTIFUL ACTRESSES, BULLOCK AND KIDMAN...STOCKARD CHANNING AND PIPER LAURIE ARE PERFECT AS THE AUNTS. IT IS THE BEST MOVIE ABOUT WITCHES I HAVE EVER SEEN....I DON'T BELIEVE IN DABBLING IN WITCHCRAFT BEING A CHRISTIAN, YET I FOUND MYSELF SPELLBOUND AND CAPTIVATED...LOVED THE MUSIC, TOO.....GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH WITH THE GIRLS!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE WHO ARE DISSING THIS MOVIE...THEY MUST HAVE NO REAL SENSE OF FANTASY!

ONE BIG QUESTION??? WHY HASN'T THIS FILM COME OUT ON BLUE RAY????』

(an easy favorite)
『I adore movies about witches, they make me more imaginative and confident. some people who reviewed this movie before i got here reminded me of the quote "there's a little witch in all of us". indeed it's true, this is one movie that will help you discover that. very human, very witchy, very fun!

terrific cast and music. very well done!』

(So NOT "just another chick film".)
『Husbands and boyfriends, relax; when your Significant Other pops this disc into the player, you won't have to pretend to be awake through it, because this is that rarest of entertainments, a chick-film guys can enjoy without worrying about sleepwalking through a redecoration of the guest bedroom.
First off, it has great fenale leads - not to mention being REAL easy on the eyes. It's got a fun, at times creepy plot with a backstory that's maybe even a little disturbing (careful who you fall for); it also boasts a great Good Guy men can relate to, a GREAT bad guy men would rather not admit we can be like, and it's even got a pretty decent good vs. evil climactic battle.
If you're going to spend Sunday watching football, you won't feel you wasted your Saturday night watching this with your wife or girlfriend. Heck, it's okay; you can even admit you liked it. :-)』

『If a broom falls, company is due. When a circle rings the moon, trouble looms, Should you misplace your broom, sorry; a hand vac can't be used in an exorcism rite. Fun and excitement abound in the Owens family of wily witches. One problem, though: the men the Owens women fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman bring a sparkling screen magic to Practical Magic, adapted from Alice Hoffman's bestseller and directed by Griffin Dunne (Addicted to Love). They play Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters hexed by a centuries -old curse...and coping with a witches brew of events involving a possible love match (Aidan Quinn) for one, a zombie (Goran Visnjic) for the other and a need to resume the age-old witchcraft taught by two doting Owens aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest). Sit for a spell and enjoy.

『Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director,Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun.--Tom Keogh

(worst 3D ever)
『Love, Love, Love this movie, so I decided to buy the 3D version for my kids this year! This was the biggest waste of money ever!! The movie picture and color are distorted and the 3D is almost non-existent! I couldn't watch with the "glasses", it gave me a headache. After a while even my 4 and 6 year gave up on the glasses! They wanted to use the glasses they got when they saw Toy Story 3d, but unfortunately, they did not work!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS IN 3D!!!!!!!!』

(Polar Express)
『I love CHRISTmas stories. Light up CHRISTmas tree and put on a movie while wrapping presents.

This movie is great and all the family will enjoy.』

(3D is TERRIBLE!)
『Speaking about 3D portion only... I bought the standard 3D version of the movie... not the blue ray version. Within minutes we had to shut it off. The images are distorted. There are terrible shadows around the chraracters and objects. The glasses are made of paper, with red on the left eye, and blue on the right. The colors of the movie are distorted from the glasses. A complete waste of time and money. Tried this movie on two different televsions, and with two different DVD players.
Rip off.』

(My son's Favorite Holiday Movie)
『My 3 year old son loves the movie Polar express. I had saved it on our DVR and we watched it so much but had to fast forward all the commericals. Great Movie for all ages!』

(dvd The Polar Express)
『This dvd quality is really bad in terms of Good like new as i found on the web-site.
It pops so much time and doesn't play well. The seller must explain the truth.』

『When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.』
『Destined to become a holiday perennial,The Polar Expressalso heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better.--Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The most intriguing feature on the two-disc DVD is probably the six-minute sequence featuring a new song performed by the two engine-room characters, Smokey and Steamer. The animation is crude and the song is nothing special, but it does preserve the dual performances of Michael Jeter (he played both characters), who passed away during filming. One of the striking aspects ofThe Polar Expressis its use of motion-capture technology to turn real actors into animated characters, and that is examined in a significant portion of the five-part 11-minute featurette, in the "look at" Tom Hanks's multiple performances, and in an Easter egg that offers a side-by-side comparison of the actors in their motion-capture suits with the finished film in the "Hot Chocolate" number. There's also a live performance of Josh Groban singing "Believe" followed by an interview segment with him and composer Alan Silvestri, author Chris Van Allsburg providing a five-minute capsulization of his career, a PC game demo, and a kids' set-top game. The version of the film on DVD is the standard theatrical version, not the 3-D version seen in IMAX theaters.--David Horiuchi

(Excellent Season, Excellent Show)
『Season two had some big expectations for me, and most fans, after having seen season one. It lived up to its predecessor, continuing the fun through the entire season. Unfortunately, this is the last season as the show was cancelled. I thought the end was appropriate and actually enjoyed it quite a bit, however I do know people that would disagree.

The cast continues its amazing work, and I find myself having a new favorite character after every episode. Kristen Chenoweth deserves a little extra praise for her vocal talents which are on display occassionally throughout the series. My personal favorite song was "Birdhouse in Your Soul," a They Might Be Giants favorite of mine.

If you haven't seen this show, it is absolutely a must see. It is a very refreshing change of pace from typical mainstream television programming. In the running for my favorite television show of all time, this second season exceeded expectations. Incredibly entertaining, funny and fun!』

(The best show to be cancelled before its' time EVER)
『I love the characters, the SET DESIGN, costume design, everything. Ned&Chuck's whining followed by upbeat optimism gets a bit tiresome (and repetitive), but on the whole a great concept. What if you could revive the dead? and why don't the revived dead ever talk about what they experienced after death? is there no after life?....hmmmm.
A great show; i'm still waiting for the promised comic book that would tie up all loose ends to come out. It was promised in SEPTEMBER.』

(Too Good for TV?)
『After watching the first few episodes of TV, I thought to myself, this can't last! This is clever writing, quick and humorous patter, for what is an original concept for television. The characters are likable and the production values are more of what you might see on a feature film budget. This show is too good to be on TV.

Sadly, it was indeed cancelled. Pushing Daisies could have gone on for another season at least. Bless the producers and writers for trying to wrap up the show in the last episode, but its obvious they were being rushed to wind things up in just a few minutes. It would have been much more satisfying to be able to give the show the time it needed or a TV movie to resolve things in a civilized fashion.

All the cast put in wonderful comedic performances, but of note to me was Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook. Her character was crack-you-up funny one second and heartbreaking the next.

Be that as it may, we now have the final season on DVD and are able to enjoy, any time we want, what I'm sure will become a cult classic.』

(Whimsical Wonderful)
『Not really sure what the heck ABC's problem is but they seem to be cancelling all of the good shows. Samantha Who, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money just to name a few. If they cancel Cougar Town I will lose it. It seems like if it shows potential they don't bother to see it through. If it seems too creative and doesn't deal with "real life" issues, then you can bet it is going to get the cut. We all know how "REAL" Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives are so I can understand why they have been kept around.
Pushing Daisies was one of those shows that comes along once in a while and you are just so excited for it because it is so promising and so unique. Adventurous storylines and a cast that fits together so well. Each episode was like a chapter out of a fairy tale.
THANKS A LOT ABC.』

(Too young to die!!!)
『Pushing Daisies was the most imaginative show on network TV. It's two year run was a life span too short! The DVDs can give fans some comfort...』
『Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 07/21/2009 Run time: 598 minutes Rating: Nr』
『The second season ofPushing Daisiesbecame, unfortunately, its last--abruptly wrapping one of the most beautiful and unusual love stories ever told on TV. Farewell to Ned (Lee Pace), the handsome piemaker who can restore the dead with one touch (and un-restore them with another, or else end another life in exchange). Farewell to Chuck (Anna Friel), his true love, brought back to life by Ned and therefore forever untouchable by him again. Farewell to Olive (Kristin Chenoweth), the pixie who pines for our piemaker, and also to Emerson (Chi McBride), the P.I. who partners with Ned (and Chuck and Olive) to solve murders with inside information from the briefly revived. But what a memorable sendoff this second season is: starting with bees gone wild and a shirtless Ned, paying homage toPete's Dragonin one lighthouse-centric episode, and ending with some measure of closure that comes in a 13th-episode, "we know we're canceled" rush. Like that finale, the season is not always as fully realized as its rich fairytale world, yet it still achieves genuine joy and longing. In many ways, it is a season of separation, with Olive off to a nunnery and Chuck out of Ned's apartment (for a little while, at least). Olive and Ned get to explore their potential romance, while Chuck gets some unexpected family time. This set contains several featurettes, most notably a celebration of the show's music (a character all its own) and series creator Bryan Fuller, who also brought usDead Like Me,Wonderfalls, and some ofHeroes' best episodes. ("I never know what he's going to do, and I love that," says Chenoweth.) There's also a piece on what it takes to create the colorful corpses Ned brings to life as well as the technical challenge of creating a computer-generated rhino, but the real magic of this show comes from the heart.--Stephanie Reid-Simons

(Adventures of Dorothy)
『A spectacular boxed set of the Adventures of Dorothy and company in "The Wizard of Oz." Extras galore included. Highly recommended for children and adults of all ages!』

(A splendid updating on Blu-ray of one of the all-time classics)
『I give the new Blu-ray five stars despite being a little irritated with the lack of an option to buy a nice, single disc version of hte Blu-ray. I got all of the set through Netflix and saw it that way. I would very much like to won THE WIZARD OF OZ on Blu-ray, but I'm going to hold out for a less expensive single or two-disc edition. Mind you, I like the film; but that is what I like, the film not disc after disc of extras that for the most part are repackagings of earlier editions.OK, that is my beef, and having made it, let me move on.

The Blu-ray is a definite improvement in the overall quality of the film, though not as much as one might have hoped for if you have watched the DVD on a up-conversion DVD player. This is not a problem restricted merely to this. Most of the older classics seem to have reached the point of diminishing returns on DVD. Even epic films like John Ford's THE SEARCHERS shows minimal improvement on Blu-ray. Still, even if the improvement isn't as marked as on more recent films, it is still definite.

But frankly, I think I loved the movie just as much when I was a kid watching it on my parents' old black and white tube TV. We all know the story about the film these days, that it was a critical and box office failure when it first was released. And we know all the stories about it. Buddy Ebsen being forced to drop out of the project when the make up that was sprayed on him caused a serious lung reaction. How Judy Garland took over the role when a deal to trade Jean Harlow and Clark Gable to Warner Brothers for a film so that MGM could get Shirley Temple, a deal that fell through when Shirley Temple died. We know all the songs, all the skits, and a host of the lines. And most importantly we have experienced firsthand how the film became a hit years after its first release because of its annual showings on television, hosted by Olivia DeHavilland (which never made a great deal of sense to me, since he had no connection to the film and had spend her studio career with Warner Brothers rather than MGM). Television was responsible for THE WIZARD OF OZ being the hit it became. But despite its success in the television era, it is almost impossible to understand how it failed to become an instant classic. The songs are irresistible, the performances classic, and the art design unmatched at the time. Scene after scene is filled with one perfect touch after another, like a peacock that strolls around in the background when Dorthy and the Scarecrow meet the Tin Man for the first time. Or the way the Cowardly Lion's tail twitches all the time (it is a subtle effect, but imagine how static he would be if he tail always drooped). It is a beautifully structured film, marvelously photographed, and beautifully scripted. The entire production is magical.

And this is a film that generations share. I remember vividly the terror I felt as a child watching Dorothy's friends come after her in the witch's fortress. Nothing in my childhood scared me more than Later it was the first movie that I watched with my daughter on TV (barely verbal at the time, she for several weeks referred to the film as "Scary Apples," for obvious reasons). My daughter probably watched the movie on VHS a hundred times minimum, largely because Dorothy was at the time one of the few female heroes around (this was before the Era of Buffy), and when she and I were stranded on a ski lift that was stopped during a sudden lightening storm immediately outside Flagstaff, Arizona, I kept her calm by retelling the entire movie, no mean feat given the lightening flashing all around us (though thankfully there was little rain).

This truly is one of those classics that it is impossible to imagine going away. The film is, if anything, as popular today as it has ever been. And conversions of it into new media like this new Blu-ray will guarantee that each generation will continue to rediscover it.』

『The Wizard of Oz, being the classic film that it is, deserves to be well done. I'd gotten used to seeing the substandard version and just assumed that "fuzz" was normal. I had a few film buffs with me when we first viewed the Anniversary Digital Copy [Blue-ray] and what a difference it made. We all saw things for the first time that couldn't be seen in previous video viewings. Great!!!』

『LOVE THE BLU-RAY VERSION. THE DIFFERENCE IS INCREDIBLEThe Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition with Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]』

(Nice extras but DRM prevents it from playing on my PC)
『I'd like to say the video quality was spectacular but unfortunately this Blu-ray movie won't play on my PC using ArcSoft Total Media Theater 3 Platinum. (I'm feeding it into a HDCP projector) I am just about ready to throw in the towel and buy a regular player. This may be the last Blu-Ray movie I buy. It's no wonder people are pirating movies, they play on everything!』
『In this charming film based on the popular L.Frank Baum novel, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she encounters some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

DVD Features
Over 16 Hours of Wonderful Wizardry About This Movie Classic, the Life and Times of Original Author L. Frank Baum and Other Early Screen Adaptations of the Oz Books– With Such New-to-DVD Delights As a Documentary Profile of Director Victor Fleming, the TV-Movie The Dreamer of Oz Starring John Ritter, Annette O’Toole and Rue McClanahan and the 2007 Hollywood Walk of Fame Salute to the Munchkins.

『When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939,The Wizard of Ozdidn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And whileOz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor),The Wizard of Ozmay not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages.--Jeff Shannon

On the discs
The 2009Wizard of OzUltimate Collector's Edition DVD has all of the material from the 2005 three-disc edition plus more. The first disc has the sharp 2005 restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); and the original mono track and a music-and-effects track. New for 2009 is a sing-along track that you can turn on as you watch the movie or you can select from 10 numbers to sing along with karaoke-style subtitles. The second disc has all the same material as the 2005 second disc: the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentaryThe Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast; and other items too numerous to mention.

The material from the 2005 third disc is now on discs 3 and 4. New for 2009 is a 34-minute documentary on the director ofThe Wizard of Oz(and many other films),Victor Fleming: Master Craftsman; "Hollywood Celebrates Its Biggest Little Stars," a featurette on how the Munchkins got their star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 2007;The Dreamer of Oz, a a 1990 television movie dramatizing the life of author L. Frank Baum, played by John Ritter, and also featuring Annette O'Toole and Rue McClanahan (poor picture quality might have relegated it to the bonus material instead of being released on its own); and a 51-minute silent film from 1951,The Patchwork Girl of Oz. These new materials complement the 38-minute biography of L. Frank Baum, and the other early treatments ofThe Wizard of Oz: Of the four silent films--The Wonderful Wizard of Oz(1910, 13 min.),The Magic Cloak of Oz(1914, 38 min.),His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz(1914, 59 min., written and directed by Baum himself), andThe Wizard of Oz(1925, 72 min., Larry Semon)--"Scarecrow" and the 1925 film are wonderfully enhanced by newly composed and performed soundtracks that re-create what a silent-movie hall might have sounded like. The sixth treatment is Ted Eshbaum's 1933 Technicolor cartoon short which has songs and sound, and is the first depiction of Kansas in black and white and Oz in color. A fifth disc has a Digital Copy of the film (compatible with iTunes and Windows Media; download code expires 9/22/10).

The limited-edition (243,000 numbered editions) packaging is very attractive, though a bit awkward for shelf space (it's taller than a normal DVD). The large box opens to reveal a 52-page bookBehind the Curtain of Production 1060with cast bios and production notes and photos, a copy of the film's budget, a 70th-anniversary watch, and a replica campaign booklet that was intended to hype the film's release to theater owners. It's a fascinating time capsule of advance publicity for a film that is still being watched and discussed 70 years later.--David Horiuchi

(Miyazaki - not for anime lovers (only))
『Spirited Away is not related to the thousands of other anime films out there. Miyazaki is a storyteller first and foremost, weaving dramatic, comedic tales. Spirited Away, and most of the other Studio Ghibli films, are made pretty much - for everyone. If you're between 8 and 100 years old, you'll probably enjoy this film. Depending on your age, you'll see a slightly different film. Spirited away combines traditional Japanese culture, post war culture, 90s culture, magic, spirits... no robots or space creatures in this one and although Miyazaki touches on Steampunk in some of his other films, there's not really any in this film. Everyone I've ever shared this film with, young and old, has absolutely loved it. Miyazaki's use of children (or childlike characters) in the lead roles - and the fact that his films are animated, leads a lot of people to assume that these are films for children, and while they are great for children, they are certainly not kid movies. Highly suggested.』

(highly recommended)
『Spirited Away is a delightful movie about a fantastic world and a lazy little girl who gets her first job in a bathhouse for spirits. Hiyao Miyazaki, praised as the Walt Disney of Japan, has created a wonderful story, rich with magical logic and unforgettable characters, that is sure to please younger and older viewers, and told it through hand-drawn animation abounding with loving detail and living backgrounds.

Chihiro starts the movie as a listless girl lazing in the backseat of her parents' car as they move to the Japanese countryside. A shortcut through the woods brings them to a decaying theme park that mysteriously draws them in and leads them to a market stall laden with platters of delicious food, where her parents gorge themselves and turn into pigs. Chihiro ends up employed at a majestic bathhouse, run by a greedy old witch named Yubaba, where spirits come to refresh themselves. She makes friends with a dragon boy named Haku, a six-armed boiler room operator, and a mess of soot balls (remember these from My Neighbor Totoro) while figuring out a way to save her parents and return home. In the course of this, she discovers that she's a tough, resourceful little girl.

Every plot development in Spirited Away is a surprise, and the characters are more subtly drawn than the characters in a Disney feature. Yubaba's a nasty witch, but first she is the strict boss of the bathhouse. The monster No-Face can be destructive, but is shy and awkward in his crush on Chihiro.. Haku is a good person, contrary to what the employees say, but is mixed up with Yubaba, which complicates things. The Japanese feel of the movie, in the beautiful styles and textures, kimonos, bowing, and disgusted faces characters make when something icky or smelly enters the scene, also contributes to the Spirited Away experience. The soundtrack is a treat too, especially the melancholy music that plays during the dreamlike sequence when Chihiro rides the train off into the horizon formed by the sea and the sky.

Spirited Away is a lot of fun and has real heart. Regardless of whether animated movies are your thing or not, you will enjoy this one.』

("The Best I've Seen in a Very Long Time")
『Hayao Miyazaki works wonders in this spectacular film. It is a little spooky at times, but it is an amazing film out of all I've ever seen. I do not reccommend it for children under seven to eight years old, yet it is wonderful for every other age. I understood it perfectly and believe that the plot is at the perfect place between dramatic and simple. I have seen other Miyazaki films, but this one truly took my breath away and is amazing beyond amazing. If you want a perfect example of a major motion picture, choose this fantastic movie for you and your family. It's Academy Award is truly well-earned and, I believe, that this is easily one of the best films ever produced.』

(Miyazaki's Masterpiece)
『Spirited Away is an AMAZING movie, straight from a brilliant imagination. The art is beautiful, the story is captivating, and the characters feel like they are a part of you. Appropriate for any and all ages, kids to adults. If you haven't seen this movie, save yourself the rental fee and just buy it; if you have seen it, then you were probably going to buy it regardless of my review, so either way, BUY IT!!!』

(SPIRITED AWAY)
『Miyazaki's animated movie SPIRITED AWAY is an entertaining story about a modern day young Japanese girl who gets caught up by accident between the world of the living and the spirit world. This young girl learns how to grow up in a hurry and also learns to be able to stand up for herself. The story includes lessons about trust friendship and using one's wit. Some very imaginative spirits are found in this story-some from Japanese folklore. Very young children may find this story a bit too scary, but older children and adults (I'm an adult and I liked it!) should enjoy this animated feature. Lots of fun!』
『From one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animated cinema comes the most acclaimed film of 2002. Hayao Miyazaki's latest triumph, filled with astonishing animation and epic adventure, is a dazzling masterpiece for the ages. It's a "wonderfully welcoming work of art that's as funny and entertaining as it is brilliant, beautiful, and deep" (Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal). SPIRITED AWAY is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. An unforgettable story brimming with creativity, SPIRITED AWAY will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. "To enter the world of Hayao Miyazaki is to experience a kind of lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the world of animation" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again.』
『The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history (more than $234 million), Hayao Miyazaki'sSpirited Away(Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy inThe Wizard of Ozand Lewis Carroll's Alice, Chihiro (voice by Daveigh Chase--Lilo in Disney'sLilo&Stitch) plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they're trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro's untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba's mini-empire. In a series of fantastic adventures, she purges a river god suffering from human pollution, rescues the mysterious No-Face, and befriends Yubaba's kindly twin, Zeniba (Pleshette again). The resolve, bravery, and love Chihiro discovers within herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. MPAA Rated: PG ("Some scary moments")--Charles Solomon

(Donnie Darko dvdVery interesting storyc)
『Very interesting story concept. However, as with many movies of this nature, the scenes are dark and some of the detail cannot be made out. Also, the music in vital conversation scenes is so loud that the voices cannot be heard to understand what the actors are saying.』

(it's called a 'cult-classic' for a reason)
『9.4 THE FILM ITSELF
9.1 VISUALS
9.5 SOUND
10 PACKAGING
8.3 EXTRAS

I've seen Donnie Darko well over 25 times. It took me a long time to understand it. And to be honest, I didn't really understand it until I listened to the director's commentary. It helped alot. But without ruining anything, I'll simply say that the story follows a young man named Donnie Darko who learns about time travel and that if he doesn't fix what's wrong, the world will end in a little over 28 days. The film captures emotions beautifully, from heartache, to longing, to love to secrets to being mentally unstable to superhero powers. It's alot to take in for one sitting, but Donnie Darko has mastered the art of unique, dialogue driven story telling. This is a film with very little action and runs off of dialogue and characterization.

Is it a must see? I believe so. No other movie has the atmosphere and feel like Donnie Darko. Does it have someone in a demented bunny suit? Yeah. But does the movie get all fudged up and super crazy hectic? Nope. It holds itself together, and everyone should enjoy this film at least once.

VISUALS 9.1
I love the look of the film. It's always dark and kind of grainy, but it fits the look well. And the "time lines" that come out of characters look fantastic. And for as small of a budget as this film has, it looks amazing. Nothing you'll write home about probably, but I found little to be unhappy with.

SOUND 9.5
I should've probably given this a 10. Great song selections, great eerie calming background music... it's all just great and really adds another leayer of greatness to a stunningly original sci-fi movie.

PACKAGING 10
I love the cover, I love the main menu, I love how the selections change. It's simple, but I love it all.

EXTRAS 8.3
This blu-ray comes with a bonus disc that is found in the DVD version of the "Collector's Edition / Director's Cut" that came out a few years ago. And the bonus disc is literally the exact same DVD, and it is just a DVD. But that's not a problem for me.

Three commentaries are here and all are really impressive. The best being Richard Kelly (writer / director) spending time with Kevin Smith (of Dogma / Mallrats fame) as they discuss alot of aspects of the film. The other two are Kelly and Gyllenhaal and the last is most of the cast with Kelly. All offer some great insight into a small, cult-like film that has a huge following.

"The Cult of Donnie Darko" and "#1 Fan: A Darkomentary" are kind of the same and capture the psychotic love affair some people have with the film. Interesting bonus feature, but nothing that makes you appreciate it. And the documentary by the #1 fan is almost really disturbingly creepy in seeing how much that guy loves the film.

"Storyboard to Screen" is exactly what it sounds like and the theatrical trailer is here, but it's for the Director's Cut of the film.

And it should be noted that the Kelly and Smith commentary is on the Director's Cut, which is 21 minutes longer than the theatrical, original release, and the other two commentaries are on the regular cut. Nothing majorly different in the versions, Director's Cut just tries to make more sense for people like me who couldn't understand what was happening all the time.

IN CLOSING
Donnie Darko instantly became a cult phenomenon and when I first watched it I was amazed and yet highly confused. After numerous viewings little has changed, but I still love this film a whole lot. Snd the blu-ray version looks sharp, has great music and all the bonus features from the DVD version. So if you own the DVD, no reason to double-dip. If you're on the fence but really like owning blu-rays, then I would suggest the blu-ray version.

BLURAY SCORE
9.6/10 "INCREDIBLE"』

(Fascinating and Entertaining)
『I first saw this movie on Bravo back when they weren't running reality shows all night long, and after seeing it a few times just kept wanting to watch it even more. Getting the DVD has revealed alot...and also opened up a whole other world if you will. I'm not one to understand what Universe the film is in at any given moment, or try to decipher how time travel works. I can only fathom that the movie is smart, bratty, and for the most part brutally honest about high school life (or whatever Middlesex is), Jr. High etc...and the variety of students you would encounter.

Donnie is the independent one, who is smart enough to challange the norm, and stand up for what he believes...I think I understand why intelligent people are so angry and sometimes misunderstood, they see the world for what it is, they understand what is really going on around them, and they are really angry about it. Those of us who aren't intelligent to understand how we are being screwed, are just left in the dark, and it's up to Donnie Darko to save us all.

Very good film holds your attention, with some comedic moments, from whimsical to some off color comments that like I said are kids being kids, not always polite, and the music..the music makes this film all the more enjoyable. Good to hear some more alternative sounds, even the music choices are smart and are a major factor in the atmosphere of the movie. An amazing film to watch , even if you are not able to understand it like me, the whole concept...at least makes you want to understand it little by little, even if you are distracted by great characters in interesting situations throughout this time.』

(Cult favorite is a hit-and-miss affair)
『DONNIE DARKO

(USA - 2001)

Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Panavision)
Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Digital

A lonely high school student (Jake Gyllenhaal) is beset by visions which portend either a mental breakdown or the End of the World...

Richard Kelly's debut film aims for cult status at every level but fails to fly off the screen. Though a fine actor, Gyllenhaal is basically miscast, and Kelly's style is too laidback to make much of an impact. Cult favorite James Duval (a regular in Gregg Araki's outrageous movies) makes a cameo appearance as the object of Gyllenhaal's strange 'visions'. Fine use of the wide Panavision frame.

A re-edited director's cut was subsequently released on home video.

(Cult Classic)
『Donnie Darko is one of those movies that is impossible to classify. It is not for everyone that is for sure. But if you are a fan of film you will enjoy it. My advice if you have not seen the film is to see it. My review can not do it justice and it is hard to describle. It bears repeat viewing and will really cause you to think unlike so many generic cookie cutter movies out now.』
『Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 02/10/2009 Run time: 246 minutes Rating: R』
『This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that devastates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly,Donnie Darkois a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride.--Tom Keogh

(Don't Toy With Us, Partner)
『"Toy Story 2," the Pixar computer-animated flick entertains us wildly, but also teaches a lesson: it's better to be a toy loved and played with by a child than be a toy admired in a collectibles museum. Woody the Cowboy (voice of Tom Hanks) is owned by Andy who accidentally almost rips his arm off.
Andy's mother puts broken toys out in her yard sale, and Woody, trying to save a fellow toy from the sale, inadvertently gets spotted at the sale by Al, a greedy toy collectible dealer. He gets stolen and taken away by the dealer. Woody's toy buddies trace the dealer and hunt him down in order to save their buddy.
Woody learns that Woody the Cowboy had been a very popular puppet in a television series in the fifties. Toy Woodys were made as spin-offs back then. Now he's rare and valuable as a collectible especially to the Japanese market. One of the toy gang out to save Woody is Humm, a piggy bank (voice by John Ratzenberger - Cliff, the mailman on "Cheers".) Woody meets and falls for Cowgirl Jessie, and he encounters a bad toy, Stinky Pete, the Prospector (voice of Kelsey Grammer of "Frazier" fame.) The toy dealer calls in an expert restorer who cleans up Woody and reclaims the use of his arm.
There are wild chases, escape scenes, some very close calls, and a lot of toy ingenuity. Don't underestimate the skill of toys engaged in a rescue operation. The action is non-stop, and the movie is great for all ages without adult references and innuendoes to throw the kids off. The scenes at the airport are scary and hair-raising. It's a toy trip that most people will enjoy.

(Toy Story! I love it!)
『Wow, I have a 19 year old son and a 19 month old little girl. I got this movie when the 19 year old was around 11. Popped it in when my little girl was about 6 months and playing in her bouncy seat....she was hooked! Both kids absolutely loved these movies and actually I do too. I've seen them both over and over again, and I still laugh. Great, great movies! Highly recommend them. Had to get new copies the others were actually worn out!』
『A Golden Globe Award winner for Best Picture, TOY STORY 2 has become a favorite all across the world, garnering praise from fans and critics everywhere. It's "an instant classic," raves New York Magazine. Now, in a 2-disc collector's edition with a sparkling theater mix, this groundbreaking animated adventure is even better! While Andy is away at summer camp, Woody is toynapped by Al, a greedy collector who needs Andy's favorite toy to complete his Roundup Gang collection. Together with Jessie, Bullseye, and the Prospector, Woody is on his way to a museum where he'll spend the rest of his life behind glass. It's up to Buzz, Mr. Potato Head, Hamm, Rex, and Slinky Dog to rescue their friend and remind him what being a toy is all about. Bursting with exclusive bonus features, including deleted scenes, outtakes, a new game, and much more, this hilarious comedy classic raises the bar on family entertainment to infinity and beyond. 『I ordered the 2002 version when it originally came out and the discs 2 and 3 were Pan and Scan with black bars at the top and bottom to make it appear it was widescreen. I heard the 2005 version, like advertised on this page had the corrected 2 and 3 discs. I ordered from this description, what did I get? the 2002 version again, saying 2002 on all three discs!! With the same problem on discs 2 and 3. I went to the description page again, and then the Back to the Future Trilogy was under review. I went through the return process with a "refund" being my only option. Hopefully I get refunded the entire amount or the correct version this time.』

『Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hitRomancing the StonewithBack to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as aTwilight Zoneepisode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad.--Doug Thomas

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy withBack to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film.--Tom Keogh

Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy,Back to the Future, Part IIIis less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun.--Tom Keogh

(Could only be 1/4 star happier ... 5 stars !!)
『First, the high points :
1. Details are fantastic:
You can see the veneers on Scotty's Teeth (Wolf in the Fold)
You can see that computer tapes are painted pieces of wood (Obsession)
You can read the certificates on the walls (Devil in the Dark)
2. The original 1-minute 'next time' previews are included (albeit, w/noise)
3. You can flip between original (w/noise) and new special effects.
4. You see the full episode, not someone's edited-to-squeeze-more-commercials version.

Now, the low points

The Blue-ray quality is so good, that in some cases the remastered special effect are obviously computer generated! On DirecTV SD resolution, the new special effects are not discernible. The same episode in Blu-Ray HD, at times, looks a little plastic and fake. However, not all planets look like 'shooter' marbles in the new series, and there are many nice details (such as when the Enterprise warps out of orbit from the planet in 'Obsession' and there is a giant blast crater created by an antimatter explosion, visible on the surface.)

Personally, I dislike the new special-effects intros, because the enterprise seems to fly towards the camera with the saucer section facing DOWNWARDS. It is not fly level, imho, like in the original series. Also, I expected more creativity in the re-doing of 'The Doomsday Machine' special effects, because the doomsday machine itself should have been MUCH larger than the enterprise (as much as 50,000x larger than the ~1000-ft enterprise), otherwise, it could never have eaten a planet the size of earth. However, maybe this was just a hole in the plot so large that it could never be filled? I don't know.

In the DVD Guide, there are no episode summaries. If you don't know the exact plot of each episode, by title, sorry, you're out of luck. They should have added space for maybe 3 sentences of text so that you could choose between episodes.

Now, the biggest drawback of these episodes is the lousy and cheap way they produced the DVD carrier. The index to shows is ONLY printed on the inside cover of the DVD carrier, so you have to look through the blue plastic at the really, really tiny print to figure out which disk to read. What's even WORSE is that Disc #7 covers up HALF the episode titles !!

I recommend that when you get the discs, you should immediately take out the paper insert and make a 95% xerox copy of it. Then, cut it out, fold it in half, and slip it into the paper clamps at the front of the DVD. That way, you can open the DVD box, and immediately open your xerox-page (no need to remove it from the paper clamps), to find the episode you're looking for.

What's more, if you want to see a particular episode, like "Menagerie", you have to know what season it was from! Because the episodes AREN'T printed on the back of each DVD box !! aaarrrrrggggghhhhhh !!!! Minus 1/4th star for such bad box mastery, but still, the score rounds up to 5 stars !!!

We are watching this on a SAMSUNG HD1500 player and Samsung LN52A850 HD Television. We have experienced a few 'scene stalls and jumps' at critical points (often, when cutting to a special effect, and once, during a 30-second countdown to death for the main characters.) I am hoping these are problems with our player, not with our discs.

(A Great Encore...)
『If you are reading this you likely already have the first season blu-ray and this one is more of the same excellent quality. The transfers are superb - almost too good, sometimes, as it is easy to see when a stunt double is used instead of Shartner / Nimoy etc! I was often amazed I was looking at something over 40 years old with the high picture quality in almost every shot.

I thought before seeing the first set that I would be a 'purist' and hate the re-done effects but to my surprise I find they add to the show rather than detract from it. All the effects are done in the exact style of the originals - it's more like you are seeing more detail than a new effect in most cases. For example, the 'hand' effect in "Who Mourns for Adonais" from this set looks nearly identical at first glance, though it is coming up from the surface of the planet rather than just out in the middle of nowhere. As it gets closer, you can see that it is an undulating energy field shaped like a hand. I suspect if it had been technically possible to do it that way and stay in budget in the 60s this is the way they would have done it. All the effects are done this way, they don't look like transplanted effects from Star Wars Clone Wars or even Star Trek TNG. It is obvious to me that the creators of the new effects share a fan's love for the original show and their efforts have paid off. On the other hand, if you prefer the original effects they are there. If you want to annoy anyone else in the room, you can even switch back and forth, hitting replay to compare them.

If by any chance you are not familiar with the series, this is certainly the way to watch it. It is one of the most ahead-of-its-time series ever made and IMHO remains the best of all the ST series. The first season is generally considered the best but looking over Season Two this is really where ST hits its stride; you can see that the relationships established in the first season are much more fleshed out here. Even among the much-maligned third season there are some gems to go along with turkeys like "Spock's Brain" and "Turnabout Intruder". But I'm getting ahead of myself, season three will come out in December, so Paramount can get another $50 or so from me and maybe I'll review that one as well.

The bottom line is that this is a great set and well worth the money for any fan of ST.』

(An Adventure In Time Both Ways)
『When I was a kid my sister and I huddled in front of the TV to make our journey into space of course along with a pint of chocolate marble ice cream.

Star Trek TOS one of the greatest adventures created by man. I gotta tell you I've been jaded by Deep Space Nine,Voyager and Enterprise. I thought watching TOS would not live up to my expectations happily I was wrong.

The stories are on to their own and best describe the human condition. The video format I believe is 4:3 Aspect ratio but if you have HDTV you can set the aspect ratio to full screen. I encoded the episodes because my laptop is lowgrade and I usually watch them at my bedside.

It's a must have if your into Star Trek fan.』

(Better Than You Remember It On Television)
『Season Two has some of the greatest episodes. There is a whole disc devoted to the "Trouble with Tribbles". I find myself watching the show in amazement at the stunning color and clarity that just was not technically possible with earlier versions of the series releases. Season two has more advanced character development between Kirk, Spock, McCoy ect. The writers had more latitude to polish and explore more depth into the main characters. I love the chemistry that existed on TOS. I now have both season one and two and will soon be ordering season 3 with it's release coming December 15, 2009. I must say that I do not watch the "enhanced" versions of the show but prefer the original special effects just as I remember them from my childhood in the 60's. Even though they used models and some crude effects, I prefer them to the digital stuff that seems somewhat out of place. The digital effects seem two dimensional and flat to me. Call it a personal preference but I like my Star Trek original and straight up. Cheesey or not...I think they really did a fairly good job with the models and camera tricks of the day.
Another great quality of the Blu Ray discs is the wonderful sound quality. Everything is crystal clear and consistant. The discs from season 2 seem to load a bit slower than season 1 on my Sony machine. Not a great distraction though.
I have been extremely happy with my purchase and enjoy watching the original Star Trek with my 3 daughters. The new movie which was released this summer really helped to build excitement with the younger crowd too.』

『9.5 THE SHOW ITSELF

7.5 PACKAGING
8.5 EXTRAS

Season 3 of Lost was action packed. Somehow, someway, season 4 topped it And not only did they top season 4 with action and suspense, it's simply the best season since the first. And in alot of ways, it's better than the first, but overall it just doesn't have quite the mystery in it that I love so much about the first season.

***** SPOILER ALERT *****
The season though does have its share of new questions. Right away we have the unveiling of "The Oceanic Six" which is the main focus of the season as we learn who has made it off the island. What we don't know until the season ends is how this happens. But before that happens we have 13 highly functioning episodes. Only 4 episodes are slower paced and really cover the back stories of some members of this group.

Right away from the get go we see our survivors break into two groups as "rescue" appears imminent, but that quickly turns out to not be the case. You really feel sorry for Jack who feels that he has finally helped these people, but it simply met with another obstacle to overcome.

The season finale was more shocking than any season before it. The show certainly has added more sci-fi elements to the show and the ending really pushes that idea to the forefront. If you want an addictive, highly suspenseful thrill ride that you can't get many other places (most Hollywood films aren't as masterful as this show) then check out Lost. But obviously don't start with season 4, start with the first season and then when you reach season 4, you'll be shocked at how fast paced this show is and just how great it has become.

9.3 VISUALS
The best looking season yet, easily because it's the newest, Lost excels on blu-ray. There's very little grain here and the colors pop off the screen just like previous seasons. There's more action sequences here (and some fantastic explosions) that look just amazing. Film companies should be worried at how great this TV show looks.

10 SOUND
Nothing needs to be said here. Look at my other reviews to get an in depth look at how great the score is and the crisp nature of the dialogue. No excess noises here, this is all masterful per usual of Lost.

7.5 PACKAGING
No freaking booklet?! Again?! The DVD, which was released the same day, has a booklet. Season 3 has a booklet, so why not season 4? (or 1&2) Ugh, this is extremely bothersome. The main disc menus are kind of boring as they show alot of scenery and not much is in the picture. The color scheme for this year matches the blu-ray case very nicely however.

8.5 EXTRAS
There are a lot of great bonus features here that make the set well worth the price of admission. The set kicks off with "Lost in 8:15" (8:11) which quickly recaps the first 3 seasons. No new footage is here, but a quirky deadpan voiceover takes us through some "very sad deaths".

"Lost: On Location" (41:52) Covers behind the scenes looks for 8 episodes. Some of these are more fun to watch because of the explosions and gun fights.

"The Island Backlot: Lost In Hawaii" (17:53) An extremely great inside look at the amount of work that goes into the set designs. Since the show is all filmed in Hawaii it's amazing how many different sets they've been able to build and how realistic it looks. Very little CGI is done with these sets, which makes it even more amazing.

"The Right to Bear Arms" (11:15) Following the ownership of the guns of the island and just how convoluted it has become with the more guns that the show represents.

"Soundtrack to Survival" (26:21) If you like music development, then you'll love this feature. An extremely detailed look at the scoring of the episode and how it begins, when it starts and what instruments Giacchino uses. It ends with a live performance of some of the "songs" on a Hawaii stage.

"Lost Bloopers" (3:22) Some funny bloopers, but otherwise just more jungle falls and whatnot.

"Deleted Scenes" (8:05) Only 9 deleted scenes and some are decent, but nothing to remember or necessary to see to understand the show any better.

"Course of the Future: The Definitive, Interactive Flash Forwards" (153:22) This sounds like a great feature, but it's not all it seems to be. After a mini game where you have to place the flash forwards in chronological order you then watch all the flash forwards in said order. It helps to understand what is going when watching the show. You can then watch individual characters flash forwards in complete order. Sadly, no additional footage is shown here, so some might skip this all together.

"The Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies" (21:15) A great documentary / mystery theory type of a feature that rips aparts the story of the Oceanic 6. Seeing how easy the story is unveiled as a lie, I wonder if this will be a focal point of season 5. Either way, it's a fun watch as alot of details are expressed in showcasing this lie. Fun for conspiracy theorists.

"The Freighter Folk" (12:40) A look at the new characters we met from the Freighter.

"Offshore Shoot" (7:50) The only really disappointing feature, this set is based on the freighter and how hard it is to shoot on a moving ship. Interesting, but nothing special.

"Lost: Missing Pieces" (31:15) These missing pieces aired between seasons 2 and 3 (I believe) and these 13 two-minute features cover some scenes between characters we don't normally see all that much. Some of these 'pieces' are worthwhile (such as "So It Begins") and some are just kind of useless ("The Adventures of Hurley and Frogurt"). But I'm thankful they added these two the sets because I never got a chance to see these online.

The set also has four commentaries. Only two are substantial and good listens. "The Constant" has one of the two, and I'm glad they had a commentary on the best episode of the season. The other is on the season finale (part 2) where Lindelof and Cuse talk about how much they hate doing an 80-plus minute commentary and how they'll never do it again. But between the jokes, they have alot to offer in terms of story detail. The other two commentaries fail because they have cast members in them and they don't do anything but congratulate other actors on their "terrific" acting skills.

IN CLOSING
Season 4 is the second best season yet, and the show certainly has not lost (no pun) it's ability to keep you interested. The special features are the best the series has had to offer yet, and with a fantastic 13 episode season, this is a great blu-ray set. If you need charactarization, then look at season 1. But if you're ready for action and fast paced (but still awesome) story telling, then season 4 needs your attention.

9.7/10 "INCREDIBLE"

(The Beginning of the End)
『For a while it seemed that Lost was going to fade away into the ether of exciting and relevant television that had become tired and aimless (see The X-Files for a prime example of this phenomenon). The first two seasons of Lost were highly popular and acclaimed, but by season three most fans and critics seemed ready to put the show out to pasture. It was moving too slow. There were too many questions and not enough answers. People just stopped caring. But then the show's creators took a major gamble and set the stakes high by reinventing the series with the finale of season three. Suddenly, the show had regained its focus and had a new sense or purpose. Couple that with the announcement that the show would be ending in 2010 following three shortened seasons that would pull everything together and Lost was back in a major way. Most series usually run out of creative steam and then fumble around to find an ending that will satisfy fans. But here was a series that had laid out a blueprint of when and how it was going to end. This bold move was just what the show needed to recapture it's spark and to cement its place in television history. For better or worse, Lost was going to end things on it's terms.

The new shot of creative energy is apparent throughout the fourth season. The episodes are lean and economical in their storytelling. The pacing is faster than in the past and there is an inevitable sense of doom hanging over the series like a cloud. Somehow you get the sense that when Lost finally ends, it's not going to be on a feel good high.

Season 4 integrates the new flash forward story device that was introduced in the finale of Season 3. As the season progresses we flash forward to learn what members of Oceanic 815 (known as the Oceanic 6) made it off the island and what problems they have run into since their rescue. Meanwhile, in the present, we slowly learn how the things played out and why some did not leave the island. New characters are introduced: Danile Faraday, Miles Strom, Charlotte Lewis and Frank Lapidis consist of a crew sent to extract Ben from the island. Why? It turns out that the island is of interest to another party as well. New alliances are formed as Jack and Locke go their separate ways after disagreeing about the true intent of their potential rescuers. Meanwhile, Desmond is featured in another excellent episode, "The Constant" which may be one of the series' finest hours. The episode not only holds pitvotal information that may be a key to the entire sereies, but it also is emotionally satisfying since it focuses on his tortured romance with Penny.

Everything leads to a finale, that while not quite as shocking as "Through the Looking Glass", still delivers the goods and sets the table for the head spinning time travel antics of season 5. All of this from a series that was nearly left for dead. The end is drawing near on Lost and you can feel the forces gathering for what should be one heck of a finish. If season 4 is any indication, that finish is going to hit like a ton of bricks.』

『After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, it s survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island hold many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, a strange French woman and another group of island residents known as The Others. The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past.』
『Season four ofLostwas a fine return to form for the series, which polarized its audience the year before with its focus on The Others and not enough on our original crash victims. That season's finale introduced a new storytelling device--the flash-forward--that's employed to great effect this time around; by showing who actually got off the island (known as the Oceanic Six), the viewer is able to put to bed some longstanding loose ends. As the finale attests, we see that in the future Jack (Matthew Fox) is broken, bearded, and not sober, while Kate (Evangeline Lilly) is estranged from Jack and with another guy (the identity may surprise you). Four others do make it back to their homes, but as the flash-forwards show, it's definitely not the end of their connection to the island. Back in present day, however, the islanders are visited by the denizens of a so-called rescue ship, who have agendas of their own. While Jack works with the newcomers to try to get off the island, Locke (Terry O'Quinn), with a few followers of his own, forms an uneasy alliance with Ben (Michael Emerson) against the suspicious gang. Some episodes featuring the new characters feel like filler, but the evolution of such characters as Sun and Jin (Yunjin Kim and Daniel Dae Kim) is this season's strength; plus, the love story of Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Penny (Sonya Walger) provides some of the show's emotional highlights. As is the custom withLost, bullets fly and characters die (while others may or may not have). Moreover, the fate of Michael (Harold Perrineau), last seen traitorously sailing off to civilization in season two, as well as the flash-forwards of the Oceanic Six, shows you never quiteleavethe island once you've left. There's a force that pulls them in, and it's a hook that keeps you watching.

Season four was a shorter 13 episodes instead of the usual 22 due to the 2008 writers' strike; nonetheless, the set comes with two discs of extras. One of the best features is "LOST in 8:15," which is a rapid-fire summation of the series thus far in eight minutes, 15 seconds. Narrated by a hilariously droll female, it includes lines such as "Jack meets Kate. Kate stitches up Jack. They bond." and "They see Jack play football with Mr. Friendly. Mr. Friendly throws like a girl." The featurette "The Right to Bear Arms" takes a fun look at the prop masters responsible for supplying the castaways with guns--and keeping track of who has one and who doesn't (best here is Sawyer's (Josh Holloway) assertion that characters often cock their guns just to look cool). Cast members Lilly, Garcia, Yunjin Kim, and Daniel Dae Kim provide a few of the commentaries, and the set even comes with an amusing safety guide for Oceanic Airlines. (Example: "if you notice black smoke emanating from the plane, please alert the captain. It is either a problem with the engines or a mysterious creature.") Finally, for those who bought the standard-def DVD, take a closer look at the front cover after you've removed the O-sleeve; you'll notice the entire cast has been blacked out save for a few: the Oceanic Six. --Ellen A.
