Calling it a rare occurrence is massively underplaying it and yet that's exactly what many viewers consider Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (especially against the very average Terminator 3: Ride of the Machines). It would turn out that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2 would become last season of a solid science fiction television series that was well on its way to being a great one. Fans will delight in the bitter-sweetness that is an exceptional boxset containing some of the show's finest moments as a grave marker for the entire series. It's especially distressing on the staff commentary tracks where clearly the network's decision to cancel the series had not yet been revealed. Unlike so many shows of late, this is one where the second season actually capitalized and realized much of the potential promised of in the first (which was pretty darn good itself). The cast expanded, with the addition of Brian Austin Green and Shirley Manson (yes the singer of grunge band Garbage). The scope of the prose enjoyed expansion as well, with new Terminators, timeline fluctuations (with visible consequence/ effect) and the intensity of the possibility of lead character death ever-present. The acting, which was far above the norm for network television in the first series, actually manages to somehow improve for this season. It's apparent that Lena Headey and Thomas Dekker became far more comfortable with their roles as Sarah and John Connor respectively while Summer Glau is given the opportunity to contrast her role as a human rather than a machine along the way. Brain Austin Green was perfectly cast as Derek Reese (the brother of John Connor's father, Kyle) and Richard T Jones continues to dazzle with his gritty performance as James Ellison. Garret Dillahunt takes the Cromartie role to the next level with an opportunity to "reset" his character here and even Shirley Manson, surely the biggest question mark of the casting selection, absolutely astonishes with her portrayal of a T1000 (liquid metal Terminator). Naturally the restrictions of television budgeting result in a program that's not quite as visually stunning as the recent films of the franchise, it is very possible that it looks as good as, if not better than some of the earlier movies. When T2 hit theaters, the whole "liquid metal" element was simply mind-blowing and Season 2 demonstrates the tactic ever-bit as well and as casually as if it were old hat. Even so, the program ranks as among the best of the best of CG-heavy action on television. Just like with the films, massive explosions and gunfights abound with dark, moody environments and tones. While it would be easy for the show's creators to fall into a rhythm based upon what's worked thus far, major kudos go out for the decision to keep the characters' whole world an ever-changing affair (just as it should be given the back story of living off the grid, always on the run). The Dolby Digital audio is mixed quite solidly as well, which is a treat considering how solid the visuals turned out. The sound follows the onscreen action with near feature film precision and though a bit front-loaded to compensate for the abundance of dialog, the use of 5.1 Surround is particularly noteworthy. In addition to a full-color booklet with episode synopsis, the extras (spread across the full 6 discs) include: · "The Continuing Chronicles: Terminator", an 8-part featurette gallery · The Storyboard Process: Cameron Goes Bad · Gag Reel · Cameron vs. Rosie Fight Rehearsal · Commentary on "Samson and Delilah" · Commentary on "Allison From Palmdale" · Commentary on "Adam Raised a Cain" · Commentary on "Born to Run" · Terminated Scenes on Select Episodes Just like with the first set, perhaps my biggest complaint is the mental overload of the source material's heavy reliance upon time travel. If you really want to be a stickler, there are a few plot holes and mismatches that rear their ugly heads when laid out against the movie's timeline but in all honesty, and considering the overwhelming ambitions in sorting it all out, the television crew does an admirable job of keeping it straight. About the biggest tragedy surrounding the whole affair is that the series does not end conclusively as again, it was cancelled before the production team could tie up all of the loose ends. As it stands (and fortunately) the 22nd (and final) episode does not end on a cliffhanger per se, it just boggles the mind to consider where the writers were going next. Considering that the program was nominated (and won) countless awards from the likes of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy&Horror Films, Emmy, People's Choice, Teen Choice, Visual Effects Society, and Young Artists Awards, the credentials speak far louder than any network's poor decision-making. It's nearly impossible to come away from the second season without concluding that the series was just starting to find its rhythm. It's sad that the show got the ax (especially considering how much junk was renewed) but I suppose the good news is that the Second Season box set is a beautiful addition to any library and a chance to own one of few truly impressive network television efforts of recent times.』 (One of the best shows on tv that cannot end with season 2) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I've been a terminator fan since I was a kid. I have seen the movies several times so naturally when TSCC came out I was skeptical about the show. I thought it was going to be a cheasy, lame, knockoff from the movies. As a terminator fan I gave it a chance and WOW!! The show is so well written, actors actually act their part, and it follows the plot of the first two movies. DVD is the only way I can watch the show being stationed overseas, so after I finished the second season I was completely horrified and shocked that Fox didn't pick up the show for a third season. What the&%$#?! How can you end such a great show, with millions of fans, end on a cliffhanger? FOX BRING BACK THE SHOW!!! John Connor (Thomas Dekker), a.k.a. the guy who will grow up to lead humanity's resistance to the hated machines, gets tough and gets a girlfriend. His uncle Derek (Brian Austin Green) gets a girl as well, and the women in their lives turn out to have a surprising connection. Cameron (Summer Glau), the Terminator sent to protect John, suffers some damage and reveals some surprisingly human secrets of her own as her relationship with John gets more emotional and complicated. Shirley Manson (lead singer of Garbage) joins the cast as Catherine Weaver, an icy executive with… well, suffice it to say that a familiar (and threatening) face shows up in her company. The special features are extensive and include featurettes on the writing, effects, stunts, music and more. I won't discuss its merits as movie. CWO has a lot of similarities in its treatment of anarchy and violence as Brad Pitt in Fight Club, yet Fight Club is less controversial? I was too young to see CWO's theatrical release. But since, I've seen it on various tape versions, DVD and finally BD, as a fan of Kubrick's cinema style. This movie is stellar in BD. I never really thought much of CWO but on BD, the framing of scenes and high resolution detail reveal subtleties that make visuals speak in strong visceral prose like no version before it [could also be remastering?], and the audio is beyond all prior CWO scores on record, tape, CD or its DVD. The subtitles are tack sharp on BD, making for a much more pleasant experience, helping viewers understand droog speak, or "nadsat", yes, yes? For example, as McDowall's character Alex peruses records in a shop, one can make out clearly titles and liner notes on some covers. Alex's face show subtle changes as blood flows and ebbs into his skin, and shows how McDowall's acted [ or directed ] with frightening zest. Violent scenes of rape and assault appear more play acting or dance moves, as actors use exaggerated movements and victims almost are almost never bruised or bloodied, despite the pounding, compare this to similar themed and recent movies like Fight Club. The clear crisp BD sound track makes it far easier to discern the nadsat words that at times were garbled in old analog transmission, broadcast TV, VHS, beta, and less on DVD. However, watching the movie with subtitles is less distracting on a large TV in the better font of BD. The music was a revelation. I never cared for Wendy [credited as Walter prior to her sex change] Carlos's music, sometimes the synthesizer sound gave me headaches. But somehow, the BD version is so much smoother and richer in overtones compared to modern digital synthesizers, I actually enjoyed listening to her. 』 (typical Kubrick--channeling from the dark to the dark) ![]() 『This film has overt messages: we are what we are, and only a chemical means will change us, because there is no such thing as redemption. But chemical solutions are out of the question because we cannot trust the government or doctors not to abuse this power. And redemption is a moot point anyway, because the very idea of redemption is just a catch word to be used by preachers and politicians. Why would I care about Alex's absolution anyway? The film did nothing to make me care about him or his soul... And yet Kubrick tries to get you to care about this monster. Alex winds up, after his "treatment", unable to defend himself against those he wronged. I was cheering this part of the film, and did not find it believable that people would be horrified by his comeuppance, especially at the hands of those he wronged. To say there is a glorification of sex and violence is an understatement. Because the thing that particularly bothers me about this film is the sped up scene of repeated consensual sex between the main character (Alex) and two young women. In the film, the scene is gratuitous porn that makes Alex out to be a stud... he keeps going and going and going. No wonder teenage boys love this movie. This glorification must be Kubrick's idea, not the writer of the book (Anthony Burgess), who is much more honest about his depravity. In the book on which this film is based, the scene involves not women, but two young girls who are drugged and then raped. Why didn't Kubrick stick to the original story? Raping children is much more in character with the violent sociopath that is Alex. There is one good thing about this film: if I ever need a character reference, all I need do is ask "what do you think of 'A Clockwork Orange'?. The sociopaths will be revealed. As a result of that, they rebrainwash little Alex to dispel their "treatment" and re-convert him back into the young thug he was, but they now protect him with a cushy job merely to protect themselves against slander. Like that Steely Dan song: "You go back, Jack, do it again," Little Alex is finally free to indulge into his bizzare twisted fantasies, this time with official protection! Every scene in Clockwork Orange has obvious and hidden meanings to it. Like an onion, Clockwork Orange makes you peel through it, layer by layer. Unfortunately, I don't think it's especially good. I have no problem with either sex or violence, but the way these are used in this movie seems juvenile and tedious. The sensibility that pervades most of it seems more like that of a 14-year old boy than a mature, acclaimed director. Perhaps in 1971 the repetitive "hooliganism" episodes and schoolyard-level phallic props were seen by audiences as amusing and even daring but in 2009 they just look a bit pathetic. Santa (Paul Giamatti). Fred is everything Santa is not: irresponsible, bitter, and kind of shady. However, when Santa agrees to give Fred $50,000 in exchange for helping out at the North Pole right before Christmas, Fred catches the next sleigh ride over, and hilarity ensues. This movie is fantastically funny, mainly because of Vaughn. His character's complete disdain for all things Christmas is hilarious, from the exasperated facial expressions to the snarky one-liners. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, especially Kevin Spacey, a vindictive member of an overseeing committee that is threatening to shut Santa's operation down. Also, there's a fantastic scene where Fred attends a Siblings Anonymous meeting. I don't want to spoil it, but watch for a few cameos and get ready for a lot of laughs. The one negative aspect of the film: Rachel Weisz, who in my opinion is one of the most annoying actresses alive. The good news in that she's not in the film very much, and even when she is on screen, Vaughn's performance is so good that he kept me laughing and made me forget how much I want to slap that chick. Overall, "Fred Claus" is a smart holiday farce that is definitely worth watching. Everyone has a little bit of naughty and nice in them, but everyone deserves a break, or in this case, a Christmas present. That sounds deep, and the message is, but toss in gorgeous settings, a wonderful back story, beautiful score, an excellent cast and lots of laughter between the happy tears that stream down your face, and you have a fabulous Christmas special, especially for adults who may have lost their own zest for the holiday season. I didn't take it out of the box, as it's a gift for my niece who is a huge Twilight fan. And if you're planning on buying it as a collectible you won't want to take it out of the box anyway, as that diminishes it's value as a collectible.』 (Great novelty item but save your money if you're a doll collector) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I liked the overall packaging of the Barbie Bella Twilight doll for the atheistic value but for those who might be doll collectors or are thinking of starting be aware there is nothing all that special about this doll besides having Twilight packaging and one label inside the jacket that says Summit. Also please be aware that if you intend to remove Bella from the box you have a job ahead of you. It seems she is wrapped up and attached well to the interior cardboard and if you get this as a Christmas gift for a young Twilighter then it will probably take you a while to get her out of the thin plastic box and all the packaging ties, tape and rubber she is attached with. Also be careful when cutting her head from the plastic attaching her to the package so you don't cut her hair in the process. This Bella doll has bendable knees but not bendable arms which is a step back in my opinion for Mattel in comparison to the release of the Wonder Woman Pink Label all bendable doll. Be warned: the bendable knees both won't bend right out of the packaging. Mattel, in a strange move, placed a black carboard wrap around the straight leg of Bella. To free the knee of it's cardboard prison you need to remove the tape and cardboard carefully after undressing Bella of her jeans. In my case the tape adhesive had attached itself not only to the cardboard but to my doll and I had to clean it off. Bella's head moves and rotates easily. A black plastic band acts as a head band for Bella's dark brown hair and seems to slip and slide easily so you have to keep moving it back into place if you handle the doll out of the package. (Tip: If for some reason this band breaks just visit the beauty section in a local Wal-mart, Target, Walgreens etc.. and pick up a pack of the plastic Goody hair binders in black to replace it. The band is very similar in type to those.) There is no Summit identification on the doll body itself to tell you it's a Twilight Saga item. The stamp on the back of the Barbie Bella head says C 1991 Mattel Inc. The stamp on the middle of the dolls low back says C 1999 Mattel Indonesia then an additional number 2509. Bella's head is a soft plastic with glittery pink lips, red brown eye brows, black painted eye lashes and a kind of grayed yellow brown eye color. The cheeks are faintly brushed in a pink tone on the warm cream colored skin tone. The ears look as if they could take earrings but no jewelry is provided with this doll. The hands are bent in such a way that when Bella's arms are posed upwards it almost looks like Bella is performing the 'Y' in the dance routine for the 'YMCA' song. Her feet are high heal Barbie feet. To keep the plastic canvas look-a-like shoes on Bella's feet, Mattel used sticky dots like you would use for scrap booking, similar to ZOTS on each heal. When removed the shoes seem to fit Bella fine and do not seem to fall off when moved around so I am guessing this was to keep it from moving in shipping etc.. Bella has no underclothing. She only comes wearing a pair of jeans and a Bella 'like' jacket blue-grey in color with pockets on the front, a gold zipper that you will have to cut the thread for to make usable and a white ribbon sewn inside that says "TM AND C Summit Entertainment, LLC." with just a folded up flat collar. This white label is the first clue you have that the doll is even associated with Summit besides the packaging itself. If the doll was mixed into other barbies you'd have a hard time defining it as a Twilight associated item. The jeans are a typical Barbie style jean with no label and two usable pockets in the front like real jeans. In the back the jeans are connected by a navy Velcro closure. The closure does not seem to pop open easily when bending or moving the dolls legs but you can hear the Velcro closure adjusting to the movements you make. There is a certificate of authenticity included as a novelty I suspect which tells you about the doll and there is a typical Mattel plastic Barbie doll stand. There is nothing special about the stand itself except for the Twilight logo in a gray-blue color rub on over the black base. The bottom of the base says C 1997 Mattel Inc., Indonesia and has four spongy bits to stop the stand from sliding when placed on a desk or table. The resting place for the doll to sit, and I mean sit as to keep Bella on the stand you have to bend both of her knees. She cannot stand on this as the resting rod in clear plastic is not tall enough to accommodate the doll. (I wonder if Mattel was guessing only a small portion of the population would actually try to use this stand verses just keeping the doll in the package.) Overall the doll is a Barbie doll not a Twilight doll. It's more of a Halloween costume for Barbie. No significant accessories or jewelry. A little bit disappointing but overall if you have a young Twilighter they will just enjoy it for the novelty it was made to be and love you for making their Christmas.』 『She's a vampire's girl.
