(A dreary assault)
『It's strange that such well-crafted CGI effects, costumes, set design, cinematography and acting could be so unappealing and depressing. I know part of the point is that these are anti-heroes, but that doesn't mean this film couldn't be more entertaining. It was visually stunning and edited decently, but watching a fight where the only characters you could be rooting for are bored and annoyed by their burden is a pretty good example of how to dull narrative. There is nothing at stake here, and it's pretty unpleasant and depressing. Not to say depressing is a bad thing, either. Bergman, to cite a cliched example, is somewhat depressing, but there is still the redeeming value of his insights into what it means to be human and there's catharsis in that. This film, taken as a whole, is overwrought and convoluted. The many well-crafted components do not make up for the fact that the narrative arc droops after awhile because there is no tension, no suspense, nothing at stake. I mean - it shows major issues: the fate of the world is at state - but I think it's hard for the audience to feel any concern. At least for me it was. (Maybe this is more about why go to a movie like this when you can read the newspaper). But, I do think this film shows interesting themes in an analystical, detached way. It's one thing for the characters to be analytical and introspective. It's another for the film to be only this way. This film should be exciting. but instead, it's schematic and slow. I know there is a ton of action, but there's nothing to ground it. Without a compelling, clear narrative and characters that I care about, it feels arbitrary. I know this is, of course, just an opinion, but if you want a good story that you will care about - read the book. For me, the movie was a kind of dreary assault, lacking pace and excitement. But, still 3 stars. It's not terrible. If you rent it, maybe just watch it in small doses.』

(Was not IN TACT!)
『When I ordered the package I expected it to be in tact including the case, but when I opened it parts of the bottom of the case fell out showing broken pieces of plastic which secured the CDs. Luckily the Blu rays still worked but I expect ALL parts to be welltaken care of ESPECIALLY the case.』

(The Watchmen)
『This movie was a drag. It literally dragged on forever and ever with no real story line, no interesting characters either. I finally just quit watching it, it was so boring.』

(alt. reality.....)
『nixons 5th term tht sez it all 4 me engrossing luv it disc qual. is exc so far bt yess i had a good time chkn this 1 out.....』

(Who Watches the Watchmen)
『"Who watches the watchmen" is one of the most memorable lines smeared across the buildings and lips of citizens in the graphic novel Watchmen. The graphic novel that went far beyond its time thanks to writer Alan Moore, it has since been turned into a popular movie phenomenon by director Zack Snyder, who managed to capture the pure essence of the novel straight to the core, leaving out what some believe are important components in the novel, yet still maintaining the overall message. Watchmen presents the story of a group of masked heroes who live in an era where the world is on the brink of nuclear war. The six masked heroes Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Rorschach,The Comedian, Silk Spectre and Ozymandias each represent the six ways to view the world in the radical time period it is set in. What ties this movie into a cultural phenomenon is the way in which it presents the solution and struggles of the Cold War era. The line "who watches the watchmen" is a sort of an irony that can be seen at the end of the movie. The masked hero, also portrayed as the smartest man in the world, Ozmandias, plans to save the human race, and unite the nations against a common enemy, by faking an alien invasion that ultimately killed half of the population in NY, yet no one knows of this secret conspiracy. Although this ending was cut from the film, and substituted with a giant explosion, it still presented the same message, that chaos that endangers the lives of friend and enemy alike, will result in union against this common enemy.
Although many skeptical fans believed that Snyder would not be able to capture the comic book in all of its glory, the outcome however begged to differ. Watchmen came out as an incredible watching experience, full of violence, drama, love and conspiracy. Each characters development is brought into focus on camera, what they discover about themselves and the world around them makes for an explosive emotional movie that captures young and old audiences alike.

『WHEN AN EX-SUPERHERO IS MURDERED, A VIGILANTE NAMED RORSCHACH BE GINS AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MURDER WHICH BEGINS TO LEAD TO A MUCH MORE TERRIFYING CONCLUSION』
『Everybody's favorite graphic novel comes to the screen (after years of rumors and false starts), less a roaring work of adaptation than a respectful and faithful take on a radical original.Watchmenis set in the mid-1980s, a time of increased nuclear tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, as Richard Nixon is enjoying his fifth term as president and the world's superheroes have been forcibly retired. (As you can probably tell, the mix of authentic history and alternate reality is heady.) Things begin with a bang: the mysterious high-rise murder of the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a masked hero with a checkered past, puts the rest of the retired superhero community on alert. The credits sequence, a series of tableaux that wittily catches us up on crime-fighting backstory, actually turns out to be the high point of the movie. Thereafter we meet the other caped and hooded avengers: the furious Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the inexplicably naked Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup, amidst much blue-skinned, genital-swinging digital work), Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman), Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson), and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode). The corkscrewing storytelling, which worked well in the comic book, gives the movie the strange sense of never quite getting in gear, even as some of the episodes are arresting. Director Zack Snyder (300) doesn't try to approximate the electric impact of the original (written by Alan Moore--who declined to be credited on the movie--and illustrated by Dave Gibbons) but retains careful fidelity to his source material. That doesn't feel right, even with the generally enjoyable roll-out of anecdotes. Even less forgivable is the blah acting, excepting Jeffrey Dean Morgan (lusty) and Patrick Wilson (mellow).Watchmencertainly fills the eyes, although less so the ears: the song choices are regrettable, especially during an embarrassing mid-air coupling between Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II as they unite their--ah--Roman numerals. In the end it feels as though a huge work of transcription has been successfully completed, which isn't the same as making a full-blooded movie experience.--Robert Horton

(It's Superman Time! -- A Choice is Made)
『Leading up to this season, Smallville was more "earthbound," in that it really was about a teenager with developing superpowers with only mere glimpses into his true heritage.

Season Five changed the tone of the series forever.

I always viewed this season as the mythology turning point for the series. Huge things happen and we're suddenly thrust from those Twilight Zone-oriented episodes into the DC Comics Universe; things shifted from a "superboy" to Superman.

Significant events go down this season, including the emergence of a certain location and the death of a certain loved one. We're also introduced to a couple more characters from DC Comics continuity.

For me, this was the season where the show grew up and strolled down the Superman road with purpose instead of by happenstance. (Those who've seen the show know what I mean.)

The only thing that irked me about this season and going into the next was the whole Clark and Lana thing was getting played out and it seemed the romantic subplot of the show was going in circles instead of officially stating, "Let's get these guys together for real and keep it that way." But, as per usual TV show fashion, something always has to happen to drive the couple apart. Though romantic tension is good up to a point, Smallville set the bar high in terms of driving the audience nuts--even to the point of bad-TV frustration--with the Clark and Lana relationship. Sometimes we as viewers just want to see things work out, you know?

Other than that, good times to be had in Season Five of Smallville.

Recommended.

A.P. Fuchs』

(Super Fun)
『Smallville Season 5 continues its history of strong storylines and character development. High School is over and many of the Smallville Crows are flying off to college. That's not the only change in the air, as Jonathan Kent takes a new roll, Clark makes a decision he is forced to live with, and planet Earth must face the wrath of the Kryptonian known as Zod.

The thing that makes the show enjoyable is its nudge/wink to the audience as bits and pieces of the Superman mythos find its way into the story. This season's EXPOSED takes the appreciation one step further as John Schneider and former-Dukes of Hazard star Tom Wopat are reunited. The writers did a top notch job of working some fun references into the show for fans of the "good old boys".

FRAGILE is another excellent episode from the season as Clark cares for a young girl with second generation "meteor powers". Is she behind the death of not only her foster mother, but her birth mother as well ?

Season 5 is not without its questionable moments, however. The Saw-ripoff, MERCY, walks Lionel Luthor through a series of "games". The would-be killer wears a mask, ala Jigsaw, and presents puzzles with potentially deadly consequences. Midway through the episode Martha Kent gets caught up in the web.

AQUA and CYBORG keep injecting the "super" into the show this season, and the touching LEXMAS gives us something for everyone to enjoy. All in all, this purchase is a no-brainer for fans of both Superman and Smallville. But be warned... the season finale holds a cliffhanger placed by those dastardly villains - the writers ! You may just want to add Season 6 to your shopping cart now.

(great service)
『I was very happy with this seller. My item was in great shape and new in packaging as promised. It was delivered in a very timely manner.』

(Great season, better depth and great hero guest appearances)
『Features Cyborg and Aquaman first appearances, which makes this pretty cool. Clark's relationships begin to deteriorate, one ends, and there's an overall sense that Clark is moving forward to bigger things. I thoroughly enjoyed the guest appearances which are comic book staples, and the loss of one of Clark's loved ones is truly sad yet well done. My favorite season so far, with less of the unresolved plotlines that seem to not come to fruition- (hello, Lex's little brother? What the heck happened to him?!!) Plus, Lois becomes a regular, and she brings comedy and lightheartedness to the show, which is sorely lacking in many of the other femae characters. Not hard on the eyes either.』

(Clark comes of Age)
『Although this guy is from a another planet, he learns the joy and pain associated with being human. It comes with such complexity and confusion that Clark is unsure as to his true place in this world. From being torn from Lana, to his uneasiness when he discovers she is secretly seeing Lex- all by his own chosing. this season rocks!!! One of my favorite episodes is Aqua in which he finds a friend in AC,a true waterman who protects the oceans creatures from harm, thus someone he can trust with his secret and release some of his burdens. Although Lexmas when Lex dreams of a life he could have when he is nearly shot to death is also intriguing. This season as many suprises for the smallville fanatic in all of us,including a moment with Clark and Chloe you won't want to miss. It has more shocking suprises for the man of steel as he continually questions who he is and what is his ultimate destiny!!!』
『An astonishing season of destiny! Clark Kent now carries a full load of classes at Central Kansas U., but that's not all he carries. He carries the full weight of his - perhaps the world's - destiny. "We call this season Superman in Training," series co-creator Alfred Gough says. "Clark is going to accept his destiny." During this exciting pivotal season: The Fortress of Solitude rises. A spaceship mystery unfolds. A dark tragedy - one even Clark's powers can't prevent - strikes. These and more key elements of Superman lore fall into place.』
『Consistently solid with some major developments, the fifth season ofSmallvillekicks the characters off to college, but not before finishing the cataclysmic disaster that ended the fourth season. With Chloe transported to the Arctic Circle and Kryptonian supervillains in town, Clark (Tom Welling) is in the Fortress of Solitude meeting Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp). He gives up his powers, but to get them back will cost him the life of someone he loves.

The even bigger development is that Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) finally give up their dalliances with others and become an official couple. That means the other girls in Clark's life become fifth and sixth wheels, so Chloe (Allison Mack) reveals the secret she's been keeping from Clark and becomes a best pal. Super-gorgeous Lois's (Erica Durance, now part of the opening credits) banter with Clark loses its bite without any sexual tension so instead she meets Arthur "AC" Curry, a fantastic swimmer who has an eye for Lois and an accusing one toward Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and LutherCorp. He's not the only one; Clark's Central Kansas A&M professor, Milton Fine (James Marsters) hires Clark to help him on his project, an expose of LutherCorp. Lex is the pivotal character of the season. His relationship with his best friend, Clark, now history, Lex has aChristmas Carol-type dream in which he sees himself in a law-abiding--and happy--life. (That episode, "Lexmas," also has some amusing interplay involving Clark and Chloe.) Undeterred, he decides on a life of power and dives into a state senate race against Jonathan Kent with gusto, though a fanatical Lex supporter turns the race into a literal one for life and death. Lionel Luthor (John Glover) also makes a strong comeback in this season, pulling unseen levers and making everyone wonder exactly what he knows.

There's some fun. "Thirst" is a tribute toBuffy the Vampire Slayer, and another DC Comics character, Cyborg (Teen Titans), appears. Carrie Fisher plays Chloe's editor atThe Daily Planet, and "Exposed" reunites Schneider with formerDukes of Hazzardcostar Tom Wopat, and the two go peeling out in a vehicle. But things come to a head in the series 100th episode, when Jor-El's prediction comes to pass and splintered relationships end up leading in unexpected directions. Then in the season finale's cliffhanger, Clark has to face three of his enemies. DVD features include commentary on two episodes and a half-hour examination of the 100th episode, from writing through production.--David Horiuchi

(This is a BLU-RAY REVIEW ONLY!!!! (from public domain to blu-ray WOW!, it was worth the wait(explained))!!!)
『This 1946 CLASSIC FILM copy write expired and went to the Public Domain library. For years on VHS a very poor copy was available. But the film was sooooo good we endured the poor quality for the "WONDERFUL LIFE's" message was heard loud and clear.

NOW for the FIRST time it has been brought up to the Blu-ray HD (1080p). With the HD Home Theater (BIG SCREEN) w/Dolby Digital sound I', telling you this movie is NOW THE WAY IT WAS MENT TO BE SEEN IN THE MOVIE THEATER in 1946!!! (Better then the original 35mm prints).

BONUS: This Blu-ray (2 disc set) Edition includes 2 HD versions of this MUST HAVE Movie. Disc 1. - The COLORIZED version (my favorite version, especially in HD. The color adds to the grand detail of the clarity ie. Jimmy Stewarts tweed jacket.
On the big Home Theater screen you won't believe how Wonderful the picture is!!!!
And the sound is awesome!!!!

Disc 2 - Is the Original Black&White version. A very good but much darker version which in my opinion mutes the HD details. Still this HD Classic film delivers. All extra features are also on this disc.

NOTE: This Blu-ray edition includes all the extras of the Standard DVD version.

BOTTOMLINE: THIS MOVIE IS A MUST HAVE. BELIEVE ME, YOU and YOUR FAMILY WILL BE TOTALLY DELIGHTED and Pleased to see and hear for the first time what a "WONDERFUL LIFE" this was and is!!!! ENJOY!!!』

(Blu-ray version looks great!)
『The newly-released blu ray version of the film looks wonderful - great contrasts, very clear picture, especially in the B&W version. (The disc comes with both the color and B&W versions). The picture is in its original aspect ratio 1.33:1, so it is shown in pillarbox (black bars on the sides of the display). The true videophiles will appreciate that nothing was cropped from the original image.』

(Need a sixth star for this movie;)
『In my view there are three really great movies:
1) Wonderful Life - especially this newly re-worked version in color
(ohhhhhhh........ Donna Reed as a young girl........ what a dream !!)
(Much like the woman I married :) )
2) Gone With the Wind - Scarlette my love !
.
Life is very hard and painful for a lot of people in the US today
and because the US middle class has been gutted they have no money
to buy the things developing countries make and the crisis
is worse in those countries as a result.
.
However, there is always having faith in God as a choice (yes or no).
It's always a choice......... essentially "to be" or..... "not to be".
These are the same choice.
When we have nothing else but faith which enables the possibility of hope
then we have nothing else and nothing else.
.
It's that simple.

『George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all– and it’s Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn’t been for all of his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget suicide?』
『Now perhaps the most beloved American film,It's a Wonderful Lifewas largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through repeated TV showings. Frank Capra's masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. George Bailey (played superbly by James Stewart) grows up in the small town of Bedford Falls, dreaming dreams of adventure and travel, but circumstances conspire to keep him enslaved to his home turf. Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director's optimistic vision may have darkened during his experiences making military films in World War II). Capra's triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties and disappointments of life, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement. It's a Wonderful Lifewas not a big hit on its initial release, and it won no Oscars (Capra and Stewart were nominated); but it continues to weave a special magic.--Robert Horton

(One of Disney's all time best films!!!)
『This is it the original Swiss Family Robinson from 1960! This great 2 DVD package from the Vault Disney Collection is spectacular!!! 『One of Disney's biggest and most fondly remembered hits, the spectacular screen version of the literary classic SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON is full of breathtaking South Seas scenery, hundreds of exotic animals, and treacherous pirates. This heroic tale chronicles the courageous exploits of the Robinson family after they are shipwrecked on a deserted island. Using teamwork and ingenuity, they skillfully overcome the obstacles of nature and transform their new home into a "civilized" community. But the ultimate challenge lies ahead when a band of cutthroat pirates threaten to destroy the Robinson's Makeshift paradise. Capture the thrills, romance, and fun of this unforgettable Disney film!』
『The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. (Enjoy The Movie For What It Is..)
『Don't spend your time comparing it to the book. If you just sit there comparing the book and the movie, you'll take the fun out of the movie itself. If you are a book reader, reading Midnight Sun really helps understand Edward's reactions and such. This is the best movie I've seen that has stayed the closest to the book as much as it could. I do understand why they made a few changes to please some of the moviegoers who haven't read the book. It ties things in a different but acceptable way. I loved how they interpreted the book. I understand that it was a teen movie so of course there was a little cheesiness at times. But hey, the book is geared towards a teen audiences regardless of the wide age range that actually reads it. I think Summit did a good job and can't wait for New Moon.』

(I'm 42, my husband is 50 and we both love this movie)
『I read the review the previous "wanna be" professional critic wrote and it's a bunch of BS. This is by far a one of the best movies made. Can't wait for New Moon. I've never read the books and I'm not a teenager. This isn't theater, it's entertainment. If you want theater, go to broadway. As for entertainment, it was great. I think most of the nation will agree with me. I've pretty much learned what the critics love, sucks. I mean really, how many awards did the movie "Sideways" win? My husband and I watched it and ended up turning it off, it was by far one of the worst, most depressing, boring movies I've ever seen! I've learned if the critics hate it, I'll love it and vice versa. You won't regret seeing this movie, it's awesome.』

(Sparkly vampires!)
『Like Harry Potter and "Eragon" and other such younger-reader literary phenomena, Stephanie Meyers' bestselling vampire romance "Twilight" has gotten the big-screen treatment.

Will its countless fans love it? Undoubtedly. Will the rest of the world love it? Ehhhhhhh... probably not.

Basically liking "Twilight" all depends on whether the idea of teenage vampire/mortal romances with no sex and lots of longing looks appeal to you. It's essentially a teenage fantasy about finding the Perfect Hot Immortal Coverboy Who Longs For You Alone, and as such, it's neither amazingly good nor hilariously bad -- just sort of blah.

On her first day at her new school, klutzy Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is struck by the ash-pale, vaguely incestuous Cullen family -- an especially by the Hawt and Brooding Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Edward doesn't seem to like her much -- but when Bella is nearly killed by a runaway car, he somehow manages to zip across the parking lot and knock away the car.

Bella does some speculation about how Edward did this particular trick, throwing off some Superman/Spiderman comparisons. "But what if I'm not the hero? What if I am the bad guy?" he asks. Of course Bella believes he could never be, because he's hot. Er, because she trusts him because he's hot. Umm... never mind. Anyway, Bella eventually figures out that he's a vampire-- a "vegetarian vampire" with the power to read thoughts... except hers.

Despite his fears that he'll hurt her, their smoldering chemistry (and Bella's "heroin" smell) draws them into a relationship... at which point, since the plot has had zero non-teenybopper tension, three two-dimensionally evil vampires enter the scene, intent on hunting Bella. The Cullens whisk her away to keep her safe from this trio -- but they have more than one way to find her.

The book "Twilight" is essentially the eroticized fantasies of a teenage girl, purple of prose and taking itself hilariously seriously. Director Catherine Hardwicke and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg thankfully remove most of the sentimental drippiness and damselly distress, but Hardwicke's "Twilight" focuses more on the stars' pretty faces than on their personalities. Or the plot.

Hardwicke paints the whole movie in dreary shades of misty grey and blue, which has a certain appropiate visual prettiness. Too bad about the choppy, jerky fight scenes and appalling CGI, including a unintentionally silly "vampire baseball" scene. Think supersonic pitching. Add that to some oatmeal-bland dialogue ("This kind of stuff just doesn't exist!" "It does in my world"), and you don't exactly have a winner.

The biggest problem is the plot: it goes nowhere fast. "Twilight" is your basic teenage romance -- angst, whining and OMG-does-he-like-me-does-he-hate-me? -- except that the Hawt Guy is a vampire, and the only real obstacle to their Eternal Luv is that he can't make up his mind about whether to date her or not. This is not terribly riveting as a story, especially since it's glaringly obvious whether they'll get together or not.

To make matters worse, the main source of tension is the cliche sex = bloodsucking formula, where Edward is constantly shying away from Bella's virginal neck (what does that imply about sucking blood from animals?). Hardwicke wrings a few pretty moments from the movie -- such as Edward and Bella in the Northwestern pine treetops -- but her skills seem to be stifled. You can only wring so much interest from "Meet the Vampire Family."

The talented Pattinson is undeniably a beautiful guy, and he has the bad boy thing down to a fine art. Unfortunately Edward doesn't call for much more -- Pattinson broods, smolders and stalks Bella as a sign of how he loves her. Stewart does a flat job as the flat Bella Swan (whose main ambition in life seems to be eternal undeadhood with Eddie-boy), and it's hard to forget that that she's basically playing a self-insert for the masses.

Those who adore the works of Stephanie Meyer and dream of eternal love with an Immortal Hottie may find "Twilight" a delight, but it's no more than a thin, flat guilty pleasure at best.』

(A wonderful Nutcracker production)
『I have seen many versions of the Nutcracker and this one really entertained me.
With Baryshnikov and Kirkland that should be no surprise, but over all it is a beautiful production.』

(The Nutcracker/Baryshnikov, Kirkland, Charmoli)
『I love that Nutcracker Ballet for perfect christmas season yearly. I first saw it since I was a kid. I never bore with it!』

(Make it a supplementary Nutcracker)
『The strengths of this Nutcracker can be summed up very simply: the dancing of Baryshnikov and Kirkland, which is to no one's surprise excellent and engaging. And there is some fine dancing from other members of the American Ballet Theater.

However, if you're looking for a Nutcracker that will cause you to revel in the holidays as well as Tchaikovsky's glorious music, this isn't it.
The sets by Boris Aronson range from a very ordinary parlor for Act 1 to a downright ugly fantasy candyland for Act 2. The costuming is second rate. The Chinese dancers don't look Chinese; the Russians don't look Russian. Other costuming seems cheap and uninspired. The general filming is too soft focus with not enough color contrast. And who's idea was it to have the ugly Act 2 thrones downstage blocking the action?

From a choreographic standpoint, this is also a disappointing production.
The children in Act 1 don't have much fun dancing and there are not enough of them. The adults don't act particularly well. It seems corners were cut in a lot of the dances in Act 2 which seem under populated and lacking in imagination and fire. You'd think the Russian dance in a Baryshnikov production would set your TV on fire; it is so tame and forgetable here. The Arabian dance is sadly missing altogether!

The idea of having Drosselmeyer appear in the climactic Act 2
pas de deux is a major distraction. He's simply out of place and adds no joy to the procedings. I'm sure this was meant as some deep psychological addition to the procedings, but it simply kills the moment and has nothing to do with the sublime music. And Act 2, which should end on a magical note, seems downright despressing in this production as Kirkland gazes out of a window like a lost soul???

If you want to revel in Nutcracker as a holiday treat, you must turn to the glorious Balanchine version with the NYC Ballet (on DVD) which has Christmas and joy written all over it. Sumptuosly designed, filmed and cast, it should be your first choice. The ABT version can only serve a supplementary version for a serious collection.』

(kept getting the wrong nutcracker video)
『I ordered a specific Nutcracker ballet video: the one danced&choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov. Instead of the video, I ended up getting credit for the purchase, as two separate shipments of nutcracker videos were not the Baryshnikov version. But the seller DID reply promptly, did take action promptly and did issue credit promptly.』

(Magical)
『There are many beautiful version of The Nutcracker but this one is magical. Criticism of the production quality for its blue cast is correct - it's not nearly so colorful as, for example, the very recent San Francisco version. But what makes it magical is that these are not ballet stars showing their abilities. Baryshnikov and Kirkland and Minz ARE the Nutcracker/prince, Clara and Drosselmeyer. All the other performances I've watched are beautiful (save one) but the story seems to get lost in the dancing. Kirkland is beautiful, sad, excited, enchanting and vulnerable. Her dancing is effortless and she obviously is completely in character. Minz is Drosselmeyer - there can be no other like him. Baryshnikov sometimes seems a little over the top but the chemistry between him and Kirkland pulls him back every time. The choreography perfectly fits the music which perfectly fits the choreography. The end is perfect with Clara not wanting to wake and looking through the window like a little girl wishing.

All of that removes the blue cast for me and makes this performance one I look forward to every year. It IS a dream, after all and dreams like this one usually are softly focused. The performance invites you to join the dream.

But, as with strawberries and blueberries - it shouldn't be watched out of season or it will become ordinary. Watch the others for beautiful production values. Watch this one to live in that magic moment with Kirkland and Baryshnikov and Minz and all the others who dance and act and make music so wonderfully.』

『The Nutcracker marked the initial choreographic effort of Baryshnikov, universally hailed as one of the world’s greatest dancers. Under Baryshnikov’s inventive direction, the traditionally lighthearted story of a small girl’s dream on Christmas Eve is transformed into a more complex theatrical experience. Broadcast regularly on PBS, this American Ballet Theatre performance (directed in the studio byTony Charmoli) stars Gelsey Kirkland as Clara and Mikhail Baryshnikov at the peak of his artistic ability as the Prince/Nutcracker.』
『The American Ballet Theater version of the Tchaikovsky classic, a 1977 studio rendition directed by Tony Charmoli, has become a holiday perennial on PBS stations and home video. It's a favorite of parents who want to give their kids the gift of culture--and with good reason. There's a loose fairy tale plot to keep dance neophytes interested, and Boris Aronson's eye-candy production design is a series of lavish dioramas. From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz), who prances on his stick-thin limbs like a Dickens illustration come to life. The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. An opening slow-motion montage diagrams his fabled smoothness of execution, elegant airborne trajectories that have a feather-light perfection. Music lovers who know only "The Nutcracker Suite" will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn.--David Chute

(THRILLED)
『I went to Best Buy for this movie, saw it had the original version. So i decided to try Target and they had the theatrical release!! I was so excited. The next night, i watched it and as it began, to my amazement, it also has closed captioning! Dumb Subtitles, Theater Subtitles ANNNDD Closed Captioning!! It seems to be Theatrical version Closed Captioning.

With many months of waiting, i can say this was worth the wait. i truly enjoyed it. I read the book before i even seen the movie and i'm glad i did. The book has far more details and my roommate felt that the movie was cut too much that it didnt provided enough flow. but in short: i still think this is a great movie.』

(New Release is a winner !)
『Let The Right One In This new release has all the whistles and bells you could want. Swedish and English languages, but more importantly, four sets of subtitles to choose from. Not having seen it in theaters in 2008, I relied on what those who did told me about the release from Magnet (Magnolia Home Entertainment.) I was afraid that I'd get the version that the fans hated, but I got The Right One. I invited a couple of those "theatrical version fans" over to watch and they loved it. I just wish that the deleted scenes hadn't been deleted from the movie. The scene where Oskar takes his frustration out on Eli is heart-breaking and should have been left in. But someone needs to tell that girl to wipe her mouth after eating. That kiss was messy.
DH

BTW, in the last scene we'd all like to think that Eli taps, "I Love You" and Oskar taps, "Love You Back" but I'll bet that those who know Swedish and Morse Code will probably know that Eli taps, "ARE WE THERE YET" and Oskar taps, "Be Quiet And Go Back To Sleep."

(What Vampire Movies Are Made Of)
『Let The Right One In is truly a masterpiece in my opinion, it really delivers an excellent story that kept me interested all through the film.

As a fan who has never read the novel, I had no expectations on my first viewing of this film and was not dissapointed.

There are all kinds of vampire films based on books right now and even though I have many that I enjoy, this one is very close to the top of my list.

For those who have yet to see Let The Right One In, when you first view this film please go in with an open mind and you might just enjoy it.

(Translation is Key!!!)
『I read the reviews on this DVD prior to buying and they were correct. The new release has both the theatrical translation as well as the original DVD translation and there is a world of difference. I've watched it with both versions and the movie is great either way but the theatrical translation is by far more satisfying.

(Intelligent, nuanced tale of childhood friends and vampires)
『The Bottom Line:

A movie where the undead are back to their former role of ghastly bloodsucking creatures (who don't sparkle, but that's another matter), Let the Right One In is passable as a vampire film but really impresses in its nuanced depiction of a friendship between two young outcasts who find solace in each other; be warned that it's often a very graphic film, but it's also often a very good one.

3/4』

『Oscar, a 12-year-old fragile and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl he befriends, who moves into his building.   When Oscar discovers that Eli is a vampire it does not deter his increasing feelings and confused emotions of a young adolescent.  When Eli loses the man who protects and provides for her, and as suspicions are mounting from her neighbors and police she must move on to stay alive.  However when Oscar faces his darkest hour, Eli returns to defend him the only way she can.』
『The enduring popularity of the vampire myth rests, in part, on sexual magnetism. InLet the Right One In, Tomas Alfredson's carefully controlled, yet sympathetic take on John Ajvide Lindqvist's Swedish bestseller-turned-screenplay, the protagonists are pre-teens, unlike the fully-formed night crawlers of HBO’sTrue Bloodor Catherine Hardwicke’sTwilight(both also based on popular novels). Instead, 12-year-old Oskar (future heartbreaker Kåre Hedebrant) and Eli (Lina Leandersson) enter into a deadly form of puppy love. The product of divorce, Oskar lives with his harried mother, while his new neighbor resides with a mystery man named Håkan (Per Ragnar), who takes care of her unique dietary needs. From the wintery moment in 1982 that the lonely, towheaded boy spots the strange, dark-haired girl skulking around their outer-Stockholm tenement, he senses a kindred spirit. They bond, innocently enough, over a Rubik's Cube, but little does Oskar realize that Eli has been 12 for a very long time. Meanwhile, at school, bullies torment the pale and morbid student mercilessly. Through his friendship with Eli, Oskar doesn't just learn how to defend himself, but to become a sort of predator himself, begging the question as to whether Eli really exists or whether she represents a manifestation of his pent-up anger and resentment. Naturally, the international success of Lindqvist's fifth feature, like Norway's chillingInsomniabefore it, has inspired an American remake, which is sure to boast superior special effects, but can't possibly capture the delicate balance he strikes here between the tender and the terrible.--Kathleen C. Fennessy

(Music wrecked movie!)
『This movie should have been a four star movie but because of the horrible music, I gave it two stars. Trust me, the music wrecked the movie! Disney, I don't know why you used sub par music for this movie. I almost turned the movie off because of the sub b-flick music. Too loud, and just wrong music. It didn't match the movie. Just imagine sitting and watching Disney's Cinderella, then throw in some Rap music. It just don't fly. Way to go Disney! I'll be selling my copy of this movie for under $5.00』

(More PC Crapola)
『The usual mindless chase scenes, explosions, and aliens who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. Still, I was suspending much of the disbelief necessary to finish this film . . . until the PC drivel entered in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, their planet is dying because of years of neglecting the atmosphere, the military on their planet is the bad guy, blah, blah, blah, the Men in Black from the US government are violent and hideously unforgiving, blah, blah, blah. More propaganda from the "hate your own country" crowd.

『Loosely based on Alexander Key's novelEscape to Witch Mountain,Race to Witch Mountainis not so much a remake of the 1975 filmEscape to Witch Mountainas an entirely new film based on some key plot points from the former film. When two innocent-looking teens appear in Jack Bruno's (Dwayne Johnson) cab and tell him that "we must travel in that direction," Jack thinks it's a bit strange, but shrugs it off and starts driving. Soon they're being followed and chased off the road, but is it Jack's past catching up with him or something much larger? Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) reluctantly confess that they are aliens from another planet, but Jack refuses to accept their statement until Sara starts moving things with her mind and Seth slips through the body of the car and deflects the SUV that's pursuing them. Sara and Seth tell Jack that they must recover their crashed spaceship in order to save earth from being taken over by aliens, so Jack takes them to see Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino); a scientist who he met by chance and who believes in the possible existence of extra-terrestrials. While the four are initially wary of one another, Dr. Friedman provides some valuable contacts and they begin trusting one another out of sheer necessity. Soon they're battling secret government agencies, heavily armed personnel, and even a cybernetic Siphon (that looks a lot like a Cylon fromBattlestar Galactica) in a desperate attempt to gain access to the heavily fortified Witch Mountain and the crashed spacecraft. Action-packed car chases dominate the film (a bit excessively, in this reviewer's opinion), but the acting and chemistry between actors is good as is the suspense and intrigue. Rated PG due to sequences of action and violence, frightening and dangerous situations, and some thematic elements. (Ages 9 and older)--Tami Horiuchi

(Best Hayazaki movie EVER!!!!!!)
『I love Hayazaki animations.

Recently, I had a chance to watch the english version and I fell in love with this. Actually, I love the english version more than the japanese version. I love the fact that the main charactor isn't the prettiest thing in the world.... ha ha

You should watch this... You won't regrate it!!!!!』

(Howl's Moving Castle: A masterpiece)
『Probably one of Miyazaki's best pieces of all time, Howl's Moving Castle is a tale for the young and old alike. This is a story of action and romance, as well as the joys of getting older. OK, don't want to ruin the story for you, but if you like anime (even only a little) and enjoy Billy Crystal's humour (yes, he's one of the voices in this one), then this one is definately for you. If you really like anime then you'll just love what Disney did with Howl's Moving Castle!』

(one of moms fav movies)
『this is a pretty story good for the kids where good triumphs over evil the boy loves the girl no matter what she looks like its aa very pretty story』

(You can't run away from life)
『A world where witches may be wicked but they aren't the threat, and where situation can settle the most intense of differences. Where magic and a bombed-out war clash. That's the setting of Howl's Moving Castle in a nutshell; a town where a war is starting, with all the celebrations that are mistakenly attributed to such an event. In the midst of this is Sophie, an insecure girl who whiles away her days working in her father's hat shop. But life has no intention of letting her waste her life there. A quick visit from the Witch of the Waste leaves Sophie cursed in the form of an aged woman. She has no choice but to leave the town unseen and happens upon the moving, dangerously-unstably-constructed castle of the renowned but vain magician Howl. Adopting the role of his maid, Sophie becomes a permanent fixture in his household. With the help of her friends - including Howl's apprentice Markl and the silent but enthusiastic Scarecrow - Sophie sets out to find a way to break the curse on her. However, her quest takes a quite unexpected direction when she discovers more about Howl and just how he got the fire demon Calcifer to move the castle in the first place.

This is Myazaki's first film based on another writer's work since Kiki's Delivery Service and he stays faithful to the setting, which has a local charm that takes you back to 1880s Europe. The CG castle in the title is such a random structure, it's a wonder it doesn't collapse. Beautiful vistas are everywhere and the use of colour is high as is the trademark of the Ghibli films. The characters are also very entertaining, especially the fire demon Calcifer, whom only Sophie seems to be able to manipulate apart from Howl.

It may not be an original Myazaki concept, but in his hands the world of Howl and his moving castle is fascinating. Like Spirited Away, the story takes an unexpected but satisfactory turn for the audience and the resolve is never 'go from point A to point B'. It's deeper and more profound, and this difficult feat is well-presented to the audience. Howl's Moving Castle is a riot.』

(Great movie, great product)
『This is such a great movie. It's based on an American woman's book, which I hear is also really good.

It's mostly a love story, so if you're not in the mood, stay away. This one gets me choked up every time.

Movie was shrink-wrapped, brand new when it arrived. Plays flawlessly.』

『In Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated masterpiece, journey beyond imagination and enter a "breathtaking fantasy world" (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times) filled with adventure, humor and heart. Sophie, a quiet girl working in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but mysterious wizard named Howl. The vain and vengeful Witch of the Waste, jealous of their friendship, puts a spell on Sophie. In a life-changing adventure, Sophie climbs aboard Howl's magnificent flying castle and enters a magical world on a quest to break the spell. Featuring the voice talents of Jean Simmons, Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Blythe Danner, and Billy Crystal, Miyazaki's artistry comes to life on DVD with inventive characters, unique storytelling and richly detailed animation. 『Like a dream,Howl's Moving Castlecarries audiences to vistas beyond their imaginations where they experience excitement, adventure, terror, humor, and romance. With domestic box office receipts of over $210 million,Howlpassed Miyazaki'sPrincess Mononoketo become the #3 film in Japanese history, behind hisSpirited Awayand James Cameron'sTitanic. Based on a juvenile novel by Diana Wynne Jones,Howl's Moving Castlemarks the first time Miyazaki has adapted another writer's work sinceKiki's Delivery Service(1989). Sophie, a 19-year-old girl who believes she is plain, has resigned herself to a drab life in her family's hat shop--until the Witch of the Waste transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. In her aged guise, Sophie searches for a way to break the Witch's spell and finds unexpected adventures. Like Chihiro, the heroine ofSpirited Away, Sophie discovers her hidden potential in a magical environment--the castle of the title. Using CG, Miyazaki creates a ramshackle structure that looks like it might disintegrate at any moment. Sophie's honesty and determination win her some valuable new friends: Markl, Howl's young apprentice; a jaunty scarecrow; Calcifer, a temperamental fire demon; and Heen, a hilarious, wheezing dog. She wins the heart of the dashing, irresponsible wizard Howl, and brings an end an unnecessary and destructive war. The film overflows with eclipsing visuals that range from frightening aerial battles to serene landscapes, and few recent features--animated or live action--offer as much magic asHowl's Moving Castle.--Charles Solomon
