(Great buy!) 『I have loved this movie since I was a child and was thrilled to see it on Blu-Ray. It looks as good as one could expect considering it's age. It also has some wonderful extra features. It has the behind-the-scenes featurette that was on the DVD; but it also has an additional 'making of' documentary, a picture-in-picture track featuring interviews with puppeteers and puppet makers, and a commentary by Brian Froud. A great addition to any Blu-Ray collection!』
(They don't make them like this anymore) 『This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Jim Henson's muppetry really puts most modern CGI to shame. This is a timeless classic that should be a wakeup call to all of the garbage that is coming out of holywood these days.』
(More than meets the eye) 『This movie, like the labyrinth itself, is not always what it seems. It has layers, and depending on where you are in your life, it can mean something different to you. It waits for you to catch up to it. On the surface level, Labyrinth is a fun fantasy movie for kids, and in this capacity, it delivers wholeheartedly. It follows a tried-but-true storyline--a girl finds herself in a fantasy world with a quest to accomplish, sidekicks who help her on the way, and a villain that both terrifies and entrances (and sings!). With fun songs, neat Muppet creatures, and plenty of humor, Labyrinth is an imaginative, yet classic, fantasy story that is always entertaining.
And then you grow up a little, and you realize that Labyrinth is also a coming-of-age story about a girl who's trying to grow up but doesn't know how to let go of her childhood fantasies. And that's what I love so much about this movie--it grows up with you. This is a movie about becoming lost in fantasy, about the dangers of growing up too soon or too late. The labyrinth is Sarah's fantasy, and solving it becomes more than just a matter of saving her brother--she also has to navigate her way to adulthood and responsibility. This may be obvious to an older viewer, but the experience of realizing it for yourself and relating to it as you grow up makes the movie something unexpectedly personal and powerful. It never stops being a fun fantasy movie with goblins, but there are bonus layers--what's real and what isn't? How much does Sarah control her fantasy world, and how much does it control her? What exactly does she have to give up? Labyrinth was one of my favorite movies as a child, and it's still one of my favorites, because I never stop relating to it.

There are a lot of BluRays out there that don't look or sound that much better than their standard def counterparts. This isn't one of them. I've never seen such an incredible difference between a DVD and it's matching BluRay before, in either video or audio performance. This is going to end up on a lot of A/V specialists "reference quality" lists before it's all said and done.
Obviously a terrific film, even if you're not a big fan of the TV series that spawned it. If you ARE a fan, get this BluRay...right now.』
(Burn the Land and Boil the Sea) 『This movie proves my claim that part of what makes Firefly a classic TV series is that it's incomplete. In an attempt to turn a brilliant-but-cancelled TV show into a film franchise, the creators try to tie up too many loose ends, lose track of the radiant energy that makes the show a DVD mainstay, and don't even shoot the finished product in a visually appealing manner.
To start with, the movie gives us an opening sequence that flatly contradicts some of the facts revealed in the series pilot. To its credit, this sequence also gives us Chiwetel Ejiofor, an inspired young British actor who adds a strong note to this story. But the confusion brought about by this opening teaser presages the confusion committed fans will likely feel throughout the film.
Then the main body of the story starts several months after the end of the series. Inarra and Book have left the crew of Serenity, and River has crossed a line, getting her and her brother evicted. If this feels like the kind of crew-splitting that caused the first Star Trek movie to have such a confoundingly long opening act, well, that's an apt analogy.
The film then sets out to close down several of the series' unresolved storylines, not by actually closing them, but by creating new storylines that have nothing to do with the series. Couple that with River's newfound superhero powers, and a visual design so murky that the entire movie seems shot through Beijing smog, and you have a film that frustrates rather than satisfies fans.
I really, really love Firefly. Though only fourteen episodes were shot, it's so full of promise and energy that fans of smart stories can't help but be drawn in. That very promise, unsullied by the need for pat answers, has made the unfinished series a classic. This effort at just those pat answers, well, sullies the series. Enjoy your Firefly DVDs, but give this film a miss.』
(East Meets Western Adventure) 『The movie Serenity is based on the series Firefly - a futuristic adventure which follows the exploits of a freighter owner and his experience of eeking out a living in a post war universe. With each job he is faced with the prospect of doing what he needs to do to survive - mostly "bad guy" stuff - and doing what he feels is the right thing to do despite himself.
The supporting cast provides a wonderful set of personalities who are amazing together. The writing and actors are so well blended you can just sit back and believe they have been working together as a team on this freighter for a long time.
There is also a really great balance between humor and reality wherby the advetures are something you don't ever mind being a part of as the observer!
After watching this movie, I miss being a part of this group of friends so much that I want to start it all over again....and usually do!

(Junk food for the masses) 『Let's examine the premise of this movie for a moment, shall we? Extraterrestrial craft have been visiting the earth for millennia. There were craft painted onto walls by prehistoric peoples. The nearest star is four light years away, meaning at the level of technology possessed by humans currently, it would take centuries at best for them to arrive here even from the NEAREST of an infinite number of stars in the universe. So, they must have craft that can considerably exceed the speed of light. If any civilization in possession of that kind of hugely advanced technology had wanted to destroy humans, it could easily have done so long ago. However, they have not. No, dear people, the threat is not extraterrestrials. It is ourselves. Humans are doing a magnificent job of threatening the survival of humanity, thank you very much. Films like this, not to mention its upcoming sequel by another name, are nothing but a low-ball attempt to whip up a frenzy of militaristic paranoia so that people won't notice that they're being robbed blind every day by the same military-industrial complex portrayed as our great salvation in movies like this. In fact, I suspect that that same establishment had some major role in the making of this film. Do you want to be horrified? Leave this film behind and look instead at what humans are doing to their habitat and to one another. THERE is the real shocker! Movies like this do nothing but dumb down the masses, who unfortunately seem to like being spoon-fed this kind of mindless, idiotic drivel.』

(Just Brilliant!!! Wickedly good, next to the last special episode with David Tennant.) 『I absolutely bloody loved this special episode with Tennant and Ryan. It's always nice to get someone like Ryan (Lady Christina) to play against Tennant's (the "Doctor") scene-stealing talent. Storyline is not your typical serious and horror-like atmosphere. It's more playful and teasing with the sexual attraction between the Doctor and Lady Christina. All cast members were wonderful and especially appreciated the bus passengers dynamic. A little bit like TV's Lost in the beginning but it's done with a slight twist in the desert. First scene is brilliant with laser beams and treasure hunting heist in the museum. Oh my lord, the directors and producers nailed this script for everyone to enjoy. Everyone does not have to be a frigging Doctor Who fan to appreciate this special episode. Yes, it's only 60 minutes but it's an exciting thrill ride. Amusement park rides should be more like this TV episode with double decker bus going through worm holes. Okay, I said too much and will let you decide for yourselves. There is an added bonus with the Doctor Who Confidential which shows all the planning and design for all the scenes. Pretty exciting and you appreciate every aspect of the team of TV producers, directors, set designers, make-up artists, etc. Blimey good fun, mate. These blokes got it right in these last few special episodes.

(Planet of the Dead) 『I am a fan so it is hard to give a bad review, but I wish the Who team would have made season collections like seasons 1-3 instead of releasing the titles separately.』
("There's dead people in my hair!") 『As any viewer of Doctor Who has probably noticed, there's a difference between cliché and conventional. The whole structure of PotD rests solely on your typical Doctor Who-type contrivances, but you know what? When it's done right, the basic DW formula is fun anyway. The plot finds our hero, the Doctor, stuck on a bus in a suspicious retread of the Series 4 episode "Midnight" (theDoctor so much as admits it in a throwaway joke). Stranded along with the rest of the passengers on a deserted planet, the Doc is aided by Christina de Souza (Michelle Ryan), an upper-crust heiress with a propensity for robbing museums (as bored aristocrats in fiction tend to do). A buzzing storm cloud, bearing fast, is visible just beyond the horizon, leaving the unlucky travelers with limited time to get the bus running, re-locate the wormhole from which they arrived, and escape before the planet is eaten. Gee, wonder if any of the writers read The Langoliers?
In fairness though, PotD scores a few nice in-jokes with regard to the Doctor Who mythos, with the best gag probably being the Doctor's irritated query ("Did you just salute?") to a UNIT officer on the other end of a phone. At times, the show definitely seems to be poking fun at itself: The Doctor first arrives on the scene with fruitcake in hand, cheerfully blabbing all about time travel and aliens; yet when Christina starts in with the probing questions, he predictably darts his head around and squints grimly into the horizon. Better for her not to know. (Yeah, sure.) It helps that David Tennant is a guy who looks like he could spin straw into gold if he wanted to. It is amazing what he can do with a line of dialogue. No one can match him.
With each of these one-off specials starring David Tennant, I've been uneasy entering into it. Without a regular companion, the show is rather incomplete, isn't it? Tennant strikes instant sparks with co-star Ryan, which is made all the funnier due to her character's serene pomposity. Companions! They might get on your nerves, but once the Doctor delivers his tired old "You can't come with me" speech to somebody, you automatically miss them. The only short point of this episode is Malcolm Taylor (Lee Evans), an adulating scientist and a really, REALLY big fan of the Doctor. He's obviously inserted into a story as a surrogate for Tennant's real-life admirers, a gimmick which somehow worked better in the old Tom Baker episode "Pyramids of Mars"; here, Malcolm is just kind of infantile and doesn't offer much. (Though the line about naming a unit of measurement after HIMSELF was pretty inspired). The previous episode was too kid-oriented to be enjoyable for me, but this one is a good ride. 』

Rather than being IN a great grand glorious world like LOTR, the lead couple CREATE their own richly deeply private world. This brings to life the literal [oldest] meaning of world -- from wer-ald [human-being life-time]. Also, the scenery and settings are just spot-on for the several areas and eras. Much of this movie was filmed on an island where motor-vehicles move about only by special permission. The lead couple, as actors, really got into their roles -- so are utterly believable. Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Problems with the sound!!) 『I bought this because I wanted to replace my standard DVD copies and I love the star trek series and I will buy each of them as they are released on blu-ray, however I am writing this review because I have read most of the reviews that others have left and not one of them has touched on the problem that when you play an episode in the enhanced or original effects the audio drops out completely. At first I thought that it was limited to just the first disk but no I played an episode that was on disk #4 and encountered the same problem. I also bought a copy of this from borders and encountered the same problem so now I have to return both of them! I was playing it on a pioneer player, which is considered to be one of the best players around! I am planning on waiting until the second release if there is one so that this problem can be addressed.』
(It's better than ever!) 『It's better than I remember. When I heard that they were updating the special effects I thought that this was the ONLY thing that needed to be fixed on the original ST. And, to have the original FX still on the blu ray, made this a great purchase!』
(Painstaking Restoration) 『For all of those that think that this is just another cheap re-release of TOS, think again. Each and every frame has been painstakingly restored to it's like new condition. Almost every piece of dust, hair, and dirt has been removed. Make no "Bones" about it. 35mm was the HD of the day. And is in a way, superior to the digital HD of today. The film had grain,yes of course, but it also had incredible clarity and resolution. It is the equivalent of taking a modern 10 Megapixel camera and setting it to shoot at 24 fps. The results would be spectacular, as this remastered version is. The clarity is so good at times, as to make me believe that I could reach out and touch the actors. The colors are vibrant and real for the era. Anything you have seen before is washed out and drab compared to this. The time that was taken to manually and digitally remove almost every defect from the original film must have been staggering. This is truly a labor of love for Paramount and CBS. Admitedly, the new effects aren't state-of-the-art. But they weren't meant to be. They fit the era . And as such, add to the visual experience of TOS. My only complaint would be to release TOS in 16*9 in such a way that didnt distract from the original 4*3 aspect ratio. I just watched "Balance Of Terror" stretched to fit a 16*10 screen with no visible stretching or distorting of the actors at all. So it is possible to do this in a future release. This would look awesome on my 99" projector screen, but the clarity that is lost from digitally expanding the image to 16*9 on my player is just unacceptable. CBS/ Paramount, take note. 16*9 is the modern day aspect ratio. Just as 4*3 was back then.』

(Why aren't the episodes in order?) 『My wife and I are a couple of Trekkies and couldn't wait for the series to come out on Blu Ray. You can tell the people who worked on this project put a lot of love and respect into their work. The picture is awesome! I like just looking at the restored and enhanced Enterprise. We have just one quibble; why aren't the episodes in order. We collected the series on VHS and each tape had two episodes with original air dates on them. The episodes in this set don't coincide. (Fun, educational series of DVDs for children) 『My 4-year-old daughter is really beginning to enjoy the Magic School Bus series of DVDs. There are three episodes on this DVD: "Holiday Special" sees the kids go on a field trip to a recycling plant and in the process learn some insightful things about how recycling helps in conservation efforts. "All Dried Up" has Phoebe trying to save the animals and plants of the desert and in the process discovers that they are equipped to take care of themselves. "In the Rainforest" has the kids celebrating Earth Day in the rainforest and learning how cocoa pods, mud puddles and bugs are all part of the ecosystem.
Though some of the concepts here are a bit complex for younger children [my daughter is 4], with parent's help they might actually have fun watching this show and even learn new ideas. I think older children will definitely learn a lot from these shows [6-10]. There are also bonus features on this DVD. All in all, this is great entertainment for kids that is also highly educational.』
