($30 for only 60 minutes?!)
『are they serious?!they put 60 minutes of material on 3 discs?!i suppose they're hoping it will up the re-buy value for themselves seeing as each sdisc must only have some 20 minutes of stuff.what a rip.the first edition says it has 400 minutes or something, but that must be a typo because there are complaints about it being too short as well.why can't they simply put out quality products that will make people rush to get it,instead of frustrating people so that they leave bad reviews and deter people from buying these sets?!』

(Old School)
『The street is in full stride, good stuff. The for adults only tag on these old episodes is ridiculous. great episodes and extras』

(Good- but I expected more)
『I really enjoyed the episodes that were included in the set, but wanted so much more. There were a ton of nostalgia clips- I completely remember the "Jacks" clip. However, there's only the first episode of each season and a few other stuff. Hope they release a Vol. 3 with more stuff from the 80's.』

(Great!)
『I have 2 VERY busy 2 year olds, and this video stops them in their tracks. I get an hour or so of quiet time every time they watch it. The best part is, I find myself singing along most of the time. It really takes me back. Not nearly as annoying as so many cartoons are now, and seems more focused on education than current episodes. Recommended!』

(Love the Old School Sesame Street episodes!)
『My toddlers and I love watching Old School episodes.....(even though they say they are not appropriate for today's pre-schoolers) we enjoy them very much! Would recommend for others.』
『Can you dig it? Sesame Street: Old School Volume 2 picks up right where Volume 1 left off, including all the grooviest Sesame Street memories from 1974 to 1979! You’ll see cats like Don Music and Roosevelt Franklin, Guy Smiley and Fat Blue. Break out your boogie shoes for far out classics like "What’s the Name of That Song?" and "Telephone Rock!" Rediscover the Sesame Street of the 1970s -- the place where you learned about letters, numbers, and loveable furry monsters. Catch you on the flip side!』

(Better than I expected)
『These Barbie movies honestly look they are going to be terrible, but after watching a whole bunch of them with my 2 and 4 year olds, I realized they're actually pretty good. This one is the best, if you like songs added into kids movies, which we do. My girls love them all!』

(Oh, my........)
『A is for atrocious. This is THE most dreadful movie, verging on beastly. A predictable, sorry story of weak, faltering friendship. The kids I babysat found it quite boring, other than the dragon with the long, white hair, who they found funny.
Do not waste your precious time or money on this inferior film. Trust me.』

(Barbie&the Diamond Castle DVD)
『The movie is what my 4&3-year old daughters wanted (they had seen it at a cousin's home). Unfortunately, the DVD sticks during several of the opening minutes and at the end. The seller requested a review too so I shared this info suggesting an exchange. Never heard back from them...』

(A Hit w/ My Four Year Old)
『My daughter LOVES this movie, and I must say, the music is rather infectious. A cute story about friendship.』

(Adorable movie, GREAT quality, LOVE the songs!!)
『This movie is adorable! I bought this for my then 3 yr old daughter and she is OBSESSED. It quickly became a favorite and is now her 4th Birthday's theme :)

The quality of the animation is wonderful! It's detailed and absolutely beautiful. The songs are GREAT and I find myself walking around singing them constantly. They aren't the annoying songs that get stuck in your head and drive you crazy though, they're actually really good songs :) I enjoy this movie and expect it to be a favorite of my daughter's for years to come!』

『Barbie™ and Teresa™ tell us the fairy tale story of Liana™ and Alexa™, best friends who shared everything including their love of music. One day their simple lives change when they are given an enchanted mirror and befriend the girl trapped inside! To save their new friend, Liana™ and Alexa™embark on a dangerous journey to the hidden Diamond Castle that will put their friendship to the test. But through the power of song and with the companionship of two adorable puppies, the girls face their challenges together and learn that friendship is the true treasure.』
『A musical story about the power of friendship and believing in oneself,Barbie and the Diamond Castleopens with Barbie and her friend Teresa singing, playing guitar, and relating a story about friendship to Stacy who's just had a disagreement with her best friend Courtney. In the story, friends Alexa and Liana loose everything but each other in a terrible storm. A chance meeting with an old woman brings them a new friend Melody, who shares their love of music, but is locked inside an enchanted mirror. It turns out that Melody is an apprentice muse who holds the secret key to the diamond castle and embodies the last chance to defeat the selfish muse Lydia and preserve music for the entire world. Alexa and Liana help Melody journey to the diamond castle, overcoming enormous obstacles conjured by Lydia and her serpent Slider as well as rising above a disagreement between themselves. This CGI animated program is colorful and bright, if not particularly realistic, and the pop music is appealing, but oddly out of sink with the renaissance style costuming. While the Barbie versions of classic stories likeBarbie of Swan LakeorBarbie Prince and the Paupergenerally offer better storylines, young Barbie fans will nonetheless enjoy this quest to save music while getting a sense of the importance of friendship and believing in oneself. (Ages 3 to 9)--Tami Horiuchi

(Blu-ray version very disappointing technical quality)
『My comments pertain only to the Blu-Ray version. The technical quality is very disappointing for me. The sharpness and detail does not compare to most of the other Blu-Ray titles I have watched. It is much improved over the DVD version, but that isn't saying much, because the DVD release of this title looked like a bad dub of a bad VHS tape. This Blu-Ray release is comparable to what the earlier DVD release should have looked like. The back indicates that it is released through the Turner and Warner Bros operations, so I suppose that says a lot. I wish that companies such as these would throw in the towel and turn this stuff over to companies that care at least a little bit about the quality of the product, as opposed to how much revenue it generates. They care only about how much revenue it generates, and for the most part could care less whether the technical quality is up to the standard for the media.』

(BD Review: Straight crap!)
『Let me start by saying that I love this film! I just gave away my DVD version expecting this to at least be up to standards on Blu-Ray quality, but it falls below standards.

The pro reviews got this one wrong - or they just let it off the hook. The picture quality looks as if it came from a 3rd generation print. It has tons of grain and scratches on it. It is clear that they just formatted it for BD and let it roll. I guess they look at box office performances and that decides if they should actually bring the film up to standards of the new medium. EVERY BD film should be what we expect it to be - 1080P HD!!

I almost regret giving away my DVD, but some scenes do show a little bit of HD, but most of the film is grainy, hazy, scratchy and shows a slime green hue on certain special effects like backgrounds. Maybe the budget on the film was not high to begin with, but this release should have maximized what it had. The sound on the other hand is really good with true surround sound! The sound out performs the picture by a mile and is the only thing that can trick you into thinking that the picture is decent.

They have been talking about doing a (another!!!) remake. I hate remakes and I see them as nothing more than Hollywood running out of ideas and a quick money grab. However, this one could use a remake (with non-British actors in AMERICA!!!!), as long as it is a part of the book series and follows the book and has the sequels as well.

If you gave away your DVD like I did waiting for this, then you must get it. If you did not, you can keep the DVD...』

(Straight from DVD to Blu-ray)
『I'm giving this 5 stars simply because of the movie. Logan's Run is one of the all-time Sci-Fi classics in my opinion. It tells the story of a civilization where there are no wants or needs, no disease, no jealousy, no anger, no sadness whatsoever. It is upotia. The catch is, and you knew there was one, that you have to die when you're 30. Just about all functions are controlled my a central machine (George Orwell would be proud) with discipline carried out by a police force called Sandmen, which are just the cream of the crop humans. Why does the perfect society need a police force? As you might have guess, some people don't want to die when they're 30, so the run and try to escape the city to a place called sanctuary. And that is the basic premise of the movie.

The story examines many concepts of how people react and behave in such a world. There of course is the Orwellian concept of central control. What is the price of pure, uninterrupted happiness? What will people risk to keep on living? Especially when they literally have nothing to lose. But the main thrust is what happens to a person when they find out that everything that they have ever been taught, everything they have ever believed turns out to be a lie. Can they accept it? Will they keep their beliefs when the truth is staring them straight in the face?

As for the blu-ray, it is a straight copy of the DVD, so there's no other goodies to go along with it. The problem is that there weren't that many goodies on the DVD. The only special feature is a commentary by Michael York (who place the title character), the director and producer. It was very interesting, don't get me wrong, but you could tell that the three had recoreded their commentary separately so there was no interaction between them, which is always nice.』

(A laughable waste)
『Gawd, what a disappointment. Somehow, I'd had fond memories from my teen years about this flick... I must have been pretty drunk or stoned (or both) at the time. Maybe I saw it at a drive-in on a hot date, and only really saw a few parts? Or maybe my teenaged libido just reacted to the then-rare excitement of seeing a brief glimpse or two of Jenny Aguttar's naked body, I don't know, but something possessed me to try to relive some past joys by buying this thing. What a mistake.

The only cast member who could even act his way out of a paper bag was Peter Ustinov, who must still be spinning in his grave to have ever been associated with this silly piece of tripe. And could that cardboard cutout really be the same Michael York who was so effective in Cabaret? Jordan and Aguttar... well, one never really expects much from them anyway. But it is actually painful to see Fawcett stumbling her way through this early movie role... you can almost hear the director yelling "look just like the poster, Farrah-- just smile, don't move!"

The props/effects are almost entirely laughable-- a "killer robot" who appears to be made from tinfoil, "energy guns" that look like halloween sparklers, fight and chase sequences that would fit right into any c-rated 60's Japanese monster movie, etc. The whole thing actually seems like more of a spoof on sci-fi flix; but sadly, it isn't... at least, not intentionally.

It's hard to believe this stinker came out the same year they were filming Star Wars, and the advent of the "new" sci-fi era... it really belongs back in the early 50's, with such "classics" as Invasion of the Green Saucer People from Another Planet. I guess this might serve as a pretty good party movie-- the guests could all get trashed and laugh their butts off at the sheer stupidity of the writing&acting.

With the exception of some of the "Washington in ruins" backdrops toward the end of the film, and maybe Ustinov's quirky character, the ONLY good thing about this movie is the wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith-- one of the first real film composers to effectively use electronic effects merged with the usual orchestral arrangements. It would be worth it to search out this soundtrack on a cd, so's not to be distracted by the inanity of the movie itself.

Don't waste your time with this arfer. If you want to see some much better sci-fi's from that general time period, try Soylent Green, Rollerball, Planet of the Apes, or Silent Running (I won't even mention 2001-- that's in a class by itself). Hell, even Westworld and Zardoz were far better than this bit of shallow fluff.』

(WHERE ARE ALL THE EXTRAS???)
『Am I the only one who remembers the 3 Laserdisc CAV box set that came out in the late 90's with ALL THE MIRACULOUS Bonus features for Logan's Run? 100's of stills, 2 mini docs, stills and script from Deleted Scenes and a whole lot more. Warner owns the same MGM material, there's absolutely no reason for them NOT to release it on this Blu ray. Pathetic』
『Based on the 1976 science-fiction movie of a hedonistic society living in a huge bubble and taking for granted there is no life outside of it.』
『If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual forall citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures,Logan's Runearned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C., are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role. Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, andLogan's Runremains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that precededStar Warsby less than a year.--Jeff Shannon

『Good price, great service, product delivered without any damage, and quickly! Would definetly buy from again.』

(Good Stuff)
『I orderd this as a replacement for one that my friend "borrowed" and never returned to me before I moved. I am happy with the transaction, the only difference that I noticed between my previous copy and the one that I ordered was with the exterior case/box. The design is slightly different, it makes the case look like a well loved/read leather bound book a little tattered, but this had no effect on the DVD's playback.』

(Summed up in one word...PERFECT.)

Lord of the Rings, the `Gone with the Wind' of the sci-fi fantasy film. The name of these 3 legendary novels has weaved itself deeply into our modern day culture. Whether you read `The Hobbit' in grade school or have read the Tolkien lore time and time again there is no doubt that this original saga is a treasure of that last century.

Turning this epic novel saga into a full length feature film was something that probably every major name in directing wanted to do. Yet, Lord of the Rings may be the most difficult film saga to be created. The story is abundant with characters of all kinds. The plot is rich with detail and the pages of the book themselves describe everything from the way a person walks to a town or landscape down to the last grain of soil. So it was Peter Jackson who decided to rise up and take the task of creating this film. In a time where film making technology has reached a golden age it was time not just to make one film but make a trilogy. It was decided not to film each piece at a time but rather film all three simultaneously and it was something that Mr. Jackson could not accomplish alone. There is a long list of writers, artists, actors editors, and yes millions of fans that lead to the completion of this project. The Lord of the Rings can be summed up in one word. That word is PERFECT.

I have seen a great many films in my life and my favorites would have to be the saga pieces. This saga is a mind blowing masterpiece and getting Oscar for best picture in 2003 sealed its page in the book of fantastic films. I will not review each film individually because they are not meant to be seen individually. The cast is brilliant and the fact that not a single actor was singled out for an individual performance only made it better. The creation of these films was a team effort. Yes there are a few major plot points removed from these films and there are some things that were changed around. I feel as a person who has read the novels and seen the films, feel that these changes were for the best. The books themselves have some dead spots that could be done without and there are characters that really have no place in the story as a whole, but it was very admirable of Jackson to pay homage to the fan favorite Tom Bombadil in the extended edition of `The Two Towers'. The extended editions of these films only make them better as they do make them lengthier. Jackson and the crew really wanted to make these films special so once they did their job in the theaters they called the cast and crew back to add new scenes and extend old ones to make the films truer to the story and enhance the development of the characters. The score done beautifully by Howard Shore is also extended and you can even purchase extended edition soundtracks. The special effects played a major role in this film and they worked the creatures looked extremely lifelike especially Gollum. By using a brand new kind of CGI technology called motion capture, Andy Sirkis was transformed into the somber, mysterious creature that LOTR fans love. The battle sequences in breathtaking and so intense there were moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. The ability to make actors like Elijah Wood and John Rys-Davis look like they were pint size compared to a towering Orlando Bloom or Ian McKellen was done flawlessly. The make-up on all the cast members be it Orc or Elf really brought the Tolkien world off the pages and into reality. Still, I feel that what truly made this film beautiful was the location. New Zealand is a lost world most of the country still untouched by industry. The land still looks like something out of a fairy tale. Through computers and sets, The Shire, Minas Tirith, Rivendell and all the other major cities were brought to life exactly as they are described in the novels.

Even if you are not a fan, I would still suggest seeing these three films. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are fantasy or anything to that extent. It's just because this cinematic marvel goes up there with films such as Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Lawrence of Arabia to the more modern day greats like Dances With Wolves and Braveheart. There probably will come a day where a film graces the big screen with this degree of grandeur, but I am quite sure it will be a long time until then.

(Great movies.)
『Nnot completely accurate to the books, but let's face it, each movie would be as long as the combined trilogy if they were. Good movies.』

『As the triumphant start of a trilogy,The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringleaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson's ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien's classicThe Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien's creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it's long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans--led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)--who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo's adventure. Ending on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation, this wondrous fantasy continues inThe Two Towers(2002).--Jeff Shannon

『excellent movie, funny and heart warming. Looked forwarded to it coming out on dvd.』

(CUTE!!)
『My son absolutely loves this movie! He has all the other buddie movies as well so when he seen this he just had to have it. Would recommend!!!』

(Love this movie!)
『I got this movie for my grandkids, ages 2, 3,&4 years old. We all love it. They want to watch it every time they visit. Perfect time length and ends on a happy note. The "bad guy" in this movie is not as scary to the kids as the "bad clown" in Air Bud. I would highly recommend it for any kids ages 2-12.』

(Awesome!!!)
『My 9 yo son loved the movie. He says "It is totally AWESOME!!!" He loved the concept of puppies going to space, and he like the other "Buddies" movies.』

(My 7 year old grandson said the movie was AWESOME!)
『I didn't get to watch it with him because he lives in another state but I do know he loved it and that's good enough for me.』
『Disney's irresistible talking puppies are back in an all-new movie that takes them where no Buddy has gone before the moon! With the help of some stellar new friends, this out-of-this-world adventure is one small step for dog, one giant leap for dogkind. Moving at warp speed, dodging asteroids and more, the Buddies and their two new friends, Spudnick and Gravity, must summon their courage and ingenuity to launch plans for a moon landing and a rocketing trip back home. Will they have the right stuff?
Overflowing with intergalactic action and heart,Space Buddiesis an amazing tale of teamwork, and loyalty that celebrates the journey of life and the friendships made along the way. It s Buddy-loving fun your family will enjoy again and again.』

『The third film in theAir Buddies series, itself a spin-off of theAir Bud series,Space Buddiesfeatures five golden retriever puppies who have a knack for getting into mischief. While the Buddies separated at the end ofAir Buddiesand currently live with different families, their kid owners all go to the same school and live in the same town. When the kids take a field trip to see the launch of a real space shuttle, excitement runs high and Buddha quickly gets his brothers and sister together to sneak onto the school bus and join in the fun. The dogs get the adventure of a lifetime when they tour the shuttle at the wrong time and inadvertently get launched into space on a trip to the moon. All is not as it should be in mission control, and saboteur Mr. Finkle (Kevin Weisman) may just get the whole mission scrapped--Buddies and all. Mission control's Slats (Lochlyn Monroe), remote pilot Astro (Ali Hillis), spaceship designer Pi (Bill Fagerbakke), and his pet ferret Gravity try their best to save the shuttle and the Buddies, but the success of their mission hinges on help from crazy Russian cosmonaut Yuri (Diedrich Bader) and his cosmodog Spudnick. Voice talent includes Jason Earles as Spudnick, a Russian bull terrier with a decidedly strange accent, and Josh Flitter, Liliana Mummy, Nico Ghisi, Skyler Gisondo, and Henry Hodges as the Buddies. Bonus features include a 13-minute making of featurette that includes some history about space travel and is narrated by the Buddies, bloopers, and Alyson Stoner's "Dancing in the Moonlight" music video. An adventure story with a nice message about family and teamwork, children ages 3 to 10 will enjoySpace Buddieswith its cute talking puppies and not-too-scary space travel, but those seeking believability will not be impressed.--Tami Horiuchi

(Among the many ingredients of happy childhood Christmas memories)
『This is the best collection of classic Christmas animation I have ever seen. These were the big "Specials" we kids looked forward to every Christmas season. Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr. were the two masterminds responsible for bringing these and many other classics to life. These cartoons were known primarily as "claymation" classics.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN

This cartoon recounts the origins and upbringing of the man in the red suit. Special attention is given to his famous methods and how they originated (I.e. placing gifts in stockings, using the chimney). Whether or not this is how these motifs really started, will be of little interest the viewing audience (young and old alike) as they are caught up and swept along by the magical delight of the Santa Claus story.

Voice talents featured include Fred Astaire as the narrator, Paul Frees (Boris of "Bullwinkle and Rocky" fame), and the legendary Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle, himself.

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN

Happy Birthday! What more appropriate first line could one ask for from the world's most famous snowman? FROSTY is one of the very few Rankin/Bass Christmas features to be shown entirely in regular cartoon animation. Yet it still boasts all the delight and charm of the other R/B classics. Jimmy Durante is unforgettable as the narrator/singer, and his rendition of "Frosty the Snowman" is arguably unrivaled. The classic ending reminds us that it is a tale for children and we are all a child to some degree or another. This is shown as the evil magician is punished by Santa by having to write sentences stating that he will not torment Frosty any longer (like a teacher would do with a troublesome youngster).

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY

This the only cartoon in the set with a biblical connection. Although the story of "the little drummer boy" is not in the Bible, it still places high on most people's Christmas song list. And this little story will boast the same amount of meaning and charm as the classic carol. Although it's quite slow in some places, the pace does eventually pick up and the conclusion is as rewarding as any that could be desired.

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER

This was the Granddaddy of them all. It features the most memorable characters and still boasts the ability to captivate each new generation of viewers. Songs such as "Misfits" and Burl Ives beautiful ditty "Silver and Gold" have lasting memories for anyone who grew (or grows) up on this. Yukon Cornelius, Hermey (the elf/dentist wannabe), Clarice, the Abominable Snowman, and all the misfit toys help breathe life into the story and make RUDOLPH the most memorable and endearing claymation classic of them all.』

(Christmas surprise)
『My hubby and I were talking about the great classics and he wistfully wondered where he could find them for the grandkids. I purchased this as a stocking stuffer and had great fun in watching his face when he opened it. Thanks for the prompt shipping.』

(Christmas classics are a hit!)
『This video arrived quickly, and my kids and I love it. It even has "The Little Drummer Boy" which we haven't seen in years.』

(Wonderful and Entertaining)
『These movies have a way of bringing your youthful Christmas memories to life. My husband and I have really enjoyed watching these claymation classics and feeling the Christmas Spirit!』

(TOO BAD THEY CUT RANKIN/BASS INTRO&ORIGINAL STUFF FOR DESTINY'S CHILD)
『For those who grew up with this Rudolf classic, there is a great set of articles on [...] by Rick Goldschmidt, author of a couple of great books on the Rankin and Bass studio. He notes that, "In 1998, Classic Media's then President Alexander Drosin asked Arthur Rankin, Jr. to do an introduction for the DVD release of both RUDOLPH and FROSTY THE SNOWMAN. Mr. Rankin graciously agreed to participate in exchange for the RANKIN/BASS name to be carried on the DVD front cover (which it was)" but then Drosin left and the new staff at Classic Media decided to make changes.

The 1998 version had the addition of an original song (Fame and Fortune) and some scene material that had been cut in later tv versions. This 2007 version cut out the restored song and scenes to make room for Destiny's Child...as well as cut the rare piece with Mr. Rankin.

What were they thinking...Geez...So for real enthusiasts of Rankin and Bass, this is a shame...but for youngsters and young at heart, the story and animation is still tops.』

(Music wrecked movie!)
『This movie should have been a four star movie but because of the horrible music, I gave it two stars. Trust me, the music wrecked the movie! Disney, I don't know why you used sub par music for this movie. I almost turned the movie off because of the sub b-flick music. Too loud, and just wrong music. It didn't match the movie. Just imagine sitting and watching Disney's Cinderella, then throw in some Rap music. It just don't fly. Way to go Disney! I'll be selling my copy of this movie for under $5.00』

(More PC Crapola)
『The usual mindless chase scenes, explosions, and aliens who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. Still, I was suspending much of the disbelief necessary to finish this film . . . until the PC drivel entered in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, their planet is dying because of years of neglecting the atmosphere, the military on their planet is the bad guy, blah, blah, blah, the Men in Black from the US government are violent and hideously unforgiving, blah, blah, blah. More propaganda from the "hate your own country" crowd.

Wouldn't let my child watch this.』

(Awesome action packed adventure!!)
『This movie is a great one to watch with the grandkids! They love it. And I did as well. The Rock is awesome!』

(Race to Witch Mountain)
『We are saving this movie for christmas, but by the looks of it the disc is in very good shape. We received the movie quickly and the cover was in excellent condition as well.』

(Race to Witch Mountain DVD)
『Great movie for the family. Enjoyed it very much and so did the kids. Would recommend it to anyone who likes a great family movie foe the whole group.』
『Disney Race to Witch Mountain (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)Disney restarts their beloved Witch Mountain franchise with this family-friendly adventure. Dwayne Johnson (THE GAME PLAN) stars as a taxi driver who gets more than get bargained for when he picks up two teen runaways (AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig). Not only does the pair possess supernatural powers, but they're also trying desperately to escape people who have made them their targets.』
『Loosely based on Alexander Key's novelEscape to Witch Mountain,Race to Witch Mountainis not so much a remake of the 1975 filmEscape to Witch Mountainas an entirely new film based on some key plot points from the former film. When two innocent-looking teens appear in Jack Bruno's (Dwayne Johnson) cab and tell him that "we must travel in that direction," Jack thinks it's a bit strange, but shrugs it off and starts driving. Soon they're being followed and chased off the road, but is it Jack's past catching up with him or something much larger? Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) reluctantly confess that they are aliens from another planet, but Jack refuses to accept their statement until Sara starts moving things with her mind and Seth slips through the body of the car and deflects the SUV that's pursuing them. Sara and Seth tell Jack that they must recover their crashed spaceship in order to save earth from being taken over by aliens, so Jack takes them to see Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino); a scientist who he met by chance and who believes in the possible existence of extra-terrestrials. While the four are initially wary of one another, Dr. Friedman provides some valuable contacts and they begin trusting one another out of sheer necessity. Soon they're battling secret government agencies, heavily armed personnel, and even a cybernetic Siphon (that looks a lot like a Cylon fromBattlestar Galactica) in a desperate attempt to gain access to the heavily fortified Witch Mountain and the crashed spacecraft. Action-packed car chases dominate the film (a bit excessively, in this reviewer's opinion), but the acting and chemistry between actors is good as is the suspense and intrigue. Rated PG due to sequences of action and violence, frightening and dangerous situations, and some thematic elements. (Ages 9 and older)--Tami Horiuchi

("All these evils I have fought, while you have done nothing but observe!")
『As the last Doctor Who story of the 1960's, "The War Games" seems to be encapsulating and then enlarging on all that was unique and wonderful about the series during its black&white decade, and it succeeds with flying colors. The story hits the ground running and draws the viewer in as it goes, disguising itself first as a good solid historical story for which the show was known but set in the midst of the First World War, then quietly introducing curiously anomalous elements leading the attentive observer to gradually assume that this is a pseudo-historical of a sort the show had innovated and developed, finally frustrating this expectation for something in a way even stranger yet--and much more sinister. Patrick Troughton's portrayal of the Doctor as clownishly bungling if only to disarm his opponents amuses here as always, but also serves to accentuate the bleak and grim fact that now for once the situation spins more out of his control with his every move, until his palpable panic when he's forced to involve his own people (the Time Lords, as revealed here for the first time) is positively electrifying. In the end, he is punished for saving the day, but not before articulating his reasons for doing so with classic eloquence indelibly defining this character forevermore.

At ten episodes long and in a pivotal position in the show's history, this rare masterpiece has so much that could be noted about it, and different things will stand out to different folks. Something that strikes me first is that here is a science fiction storyline that only the BBC could get away with without looking shoddy or half-baked; their experience and expertise in historical dramas, their attention to accurate detail in sets and costumes, allows "The War Games" to manage not just one realistically believable war zone but many, each one quite distinct. And the ragtag collection of renegades assembled from all different historical eras is a weird sight you'll only ever see in Doctor Who. Just as intriguing in a way is the story's attitude to war as a whole, touching on its horrors and absurdities in a responsible manner appropriate to the show's format and audience, generally taking a dim view of it but not in a gratingly preachy manner. On a different note, there is something clearly archetypal going on in the battle of wits between the Doctor and the War Chief, another renegade Time Lord who, like the Doctor, does "tend to get involved in things" but out of aggressive self-interest. Retrospectively speaking, it's hard not to see this one-off character as a prototype of the Master, but merely within the space of this story alone his rather bombastic mood swings nicely contrast with the smoothly calculating cruelty of the War Lord: a fine balance of complementary villainy, indeed.

Speaking of complementary pairs, Jamie with his brawn and Zoe with her brains really shine here as the Doctor's companions, and the chemistry and friendship between these three characters seems so natural that the nature of their separation at the end is all the more poignant. The bad guys are defeated, and yet the tale ends on a plaintive note of heartbreaking loss. Few shows have the guts to do this, and of those few can manage it with such a sure touch of subtlety. To be honest, Doctor Who itself has kind of dropped the ball on this score more than once, making it all the more precious that "The War Games" aims true and on target as it does. Still, it's odd that four incarnations later the Doctor was put on trial again on the same charges--perhaps Time Lord jurisprudence has no concept of double jeopardy?』

(DOCTOR WHO GOES TO EPIC-LENGTHS WITH "THE WAR GAMES!")
『Epic-length stories were nothing new to Doctor Who by the end of the sixties. William Hartnell faced his most famous foe in "The Daleks' Master Plan," a twelve-part story that ran from November of 1965 to December of 1966, and would be the longest Doctor Who serial ever, until 1986 when the fourteen-part adventure "The Trial of a Time Lord" featured Colin Baker's last performance as the Time Lord. When the sixth season of the series came, there were two reasons to create another epic Who adventure. For one, it would see the show's 50th Serial. For the other, it would see the end of Patrick Troughton's three-year run as the Second incarnation of the Doctor. For this task, writers Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke created a behemoth adventure: the ten-part odyssey of war, aptly-titled "The War Games."
The epic story tells of the Doctor and his companions, Jamie and Zoe, arriving on a planet where soldiers from different eras of world history have been plucked from their time periods, and forced to fight in deadly war games against their knowledge or wish. It's all the plans of the War Lord and the War Chief, who plan to create a massive army to conquer the galaxy. Although the Doctor does his best, he alone cannot thwart their plans, and has no choice but to call upon his own people, the Time Lords, for help. In so doing, he knows that he will have to face them for breaking the Time Lords' rule of non-interference.
Overall, "The War Game" delivers on it's epic length. Recreations of epic periods of history, such as the Roman Period, the American Civil War and World War I, are done very accurately. Where the story starts to drag is when the Doctor begins to face the War Lord and War Chief, who is also a Time Lord, in their base of operations. But towards the end, the show picks up steam yet again. The serial ends with one of the most historical episodes in the show's history: the revelation of the Doctor's race, and the first trip to Gallifrey (though the planet's name is not mentioned). And finally, after three years in the role, we say goodbye to the Second Doctor, as well as his companions, as they are returned to their homes. The Doctor is then exiled to Earth by the Time Lords, and forced to regenerate yet again, ushering the end of the Patrick Troughton era of Doctor Who, and also ending the show's run in Black and White. When the show returned in 1970, it would see the beginning of the Jon Pertwee era, and the show's change to Color.
The DVD presentation of "The War Games" is fantastic, sporting a terrific picture restoration, and crisp and clear sound. The extras are plentiful, and fascinating. Fans of Doctor Who will not want to miss this chance to own an epic-length adventure from the classic era of the series. Highly recommended!

(The last days of the renegade)
『Got the three-disc set a couple of days ago and am very happy with the results. The last time I had seen this was on a snowy bootleg copy on a Beta videotape some 20+ years ago, so it was excitting to see it again (and really for the first time). Troughton and the cast obviously know going in that their time is ending and they put a lot of effort into showcasing their characters and the family atmosphere they shared together over the years. Of course, we expect that from Hines and Troughton, but - as stated in one of the commentaries -Padbury shows why she's so fondly remembered, even if she really isn't given that much to do here.

The third and final disc contains all of the documentaries and they make for excellent viewing; including at least one (about working for the BBC before it went to color) could be enjoyed by anyone interested in the early days of television and not just Doctor Who fans. Fans from all eras of the program will also enjoy the 20+min. documentary on the various regenerations as well (albeit with some repeated interview footage from other DVDs in the series). One thing stated in those documentaries really stands out - that after Troughton left, the show would be changed forever. No longer would the Doctor be a stranger; tightlipped for six years about where he came from, he would soon be dropping his title as a Time Lord left and right like a namedropper at a party. He would never again be quite as seat-of-the-pants as he was in his first two incarnations, while the show would slowly morph away from the being for "all kids and the family" to being for "older kids and some of the family." Not to say that the show didn't have heights even higher than that of the first six years, but with THE WAR GAMES, the Renegade has become no more.

Well worth the time for longtime fans and the pace is remarkably better for ten episodes than certainly I remember it being. Newer fans may not be too keen on the ten-episode stretch (they'll want to get to the good stuff with the Time Lords at the end), but the documentaries will certainly make up for that.』

(An epic action-packed story that introduces the Time Lords!)
『"The War Games" was an epic ten-part story that introduces the Time Lords, and was Patrick Troughton's (the Doctor) final story as well as Frazer Hines' (Jamie) and Wendy Padbury's (Zoe).

The story could have been an episode or two shorter, but I still think it holds up quite well. Especially for a ten-parter. Most of the episodes are action-packed, the story is filled with mystery, all of the cliffhangers are truly great, the acting and directing is wonderfully played, the charaters are very engaging, the special effects aren't that bad, and the war settings and battle scenes are very realistic.

The TARDIS has materialized in what appears to be a World War I battlefield. Immediately upon their arrival, the Doctor and his companions are bombarded with artillery shells. But when they are picked up by a British ambulance and taken to headquarters, they are charged as spies and sentenced to death. As the Doctor and his companions try to escape, they find some very odd things: a tele-communicator in the General's office and an 18th century Redcoat. Is this really the First World War? Why is the General so keen to get rid of the Doctor? Who are these mysterious aliens observing the war? And what connections does their War Chief have with the Doctor?

As the Doctor finds himself fighting the most powerful enemy he has ever faced, the only solution left to him is to call for help from the very people he fears - his own people, the Time Lords.

A great adventure that would be a shame to miss. Highly recommended!』

(A few remarks.)
『1. Barring "Tenth Planet" resurfacing, "War Games" has to be the Holy Grail of at least the early Who stories. Can't wait to add this to my collection.

2. Well, this isn't EXACTLY Troughton's swan song as the Doctor. He DOES end up doing a few stories before nodding out. Of course, this is his last story as the star of the show.

3. I agree with the length of the story. They could have cut it down to at least half as long. Over doing the stories seemed to be a bad habit for both Hartnell's and Troughton's tenure. "Unearthly Child" and "The Daleks" could have been half as long as they were.』

『The TARDIS arrives on a planet where a race known only as the Aliens have gathered soldiers from a number of different wars in history, brainwashed them and put them to battle. Their aim is to form an invincible army from the survivors and use this to take over the galaxy.』

(Hook.Popeye and Hocus Pocus)
『Great old movies all three that we purchased recently. Popeye was great although I understand did not do well at the cinema. Love Robin Williams so Hook had to be next. Hocus Pocus again another great movie which we will watch again and again. Also our grand children love these DVDs so they are added to our collection. All light hearted comedy no violence and all very funny,』

(The Ultimate Mid-life Movie)
『I have watched this movie at least 20 times 18 years ago when my children were young. Now I am 53 years old. I recently, caught a short piece of the movie on cable one day at lunch. I realized this was only partially a children's movie. This continuation of the venerable Peter Pan story is all about the male mid-life experience (45-60 years old or so). When I watched it with this concept in mind, I found myself in tears within the first 15 minutes of the movie. It is such a profound mythic description of modern day man in mid-life. My children are now grown. Yet, I find myself just like Peter, drawn to return to the days of childhood to find what has been lost there and needing to pick up certain things for the next portion of life. All the characters of the self can be found in this story from the shadow to the male anima. Perhaps we all have to learn again how to fight, fly and crow. The challenges of mid-life are so wonderfully presented you could teach a course from this one movie alone. Yes, it is a great kid's movie, and 18 years ago my son had a Hook birthday party in which he begged me to put up a zip line for him to slide out of a window in our house. It has all the elements a young boy loves. But, there are all the elements that a 50 something man needs to hear again and work through. It's a classic for our time and perhaps for the ages.

『A high-flying adventure from the magic of Steven Spielberg Hook stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan and Dustin Hoffman as the infamous Captain Hook.Joining the fun is Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell Bob Hoskins as the pirate Smee and Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy Darling who must convince the middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning that he was once the legendary Peter Pan. And so the adventure begins anew with Peter off to Neverland to save his two children from Captain Hook. Along the way he rediscovers the power of imagination friendship and magic. A classic tale updated for children of all ages Hook nominated for five 1991 Academy Awards including Best Visual Effects is "a 10. A film that will entertain generations generations from now." (Gary Franklin KABC-TV)System Requirements:Starring: Dustin Hoffman Bob Hoskins Julia Roberts Robin Williams and Maggie Smith. Directed By: Steven Spielberg. Running Time: 142 mins. 『Steven Spielberg's deeply flawed but sporadically fun and moving update of the Peter Pan legend stars Robin Williams as the grown-up Pan, a corporate-takeover type who must embrace his old identity in order to save his kids from Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). The stars put on a good show, including Hoffman's read of Hook's hysterical personality, Julia Roberts mini-turn as a tiny Tinker Bell, and Maggie Smith's touching performance as the aged Wendy. The visual contrast between the adult Pan's bustling outside world and the insulated fantasy of Neverland is striking, but Spielberg's ideas about the Lost Boys--politically correct in their ethnic diversity, energetic on skateboards--are contrived and cheapening. On the plus side, the story's theme about adults finding their innocence again through their children is very touching (though some people have found it cloying). If you can look beyond the glaring problems, there's plenty to like here.--Tom Keogh
