(Disney Has Done It Again!)
『I collect the Disney Classics and this new Blu-Ray did not dissapoint. It was beautifully remastered in both picture quality and audio. The colors are so amazing in this upgrade and the characters we fell in love with as children are just as grand as they once were. This is a wonderful gift idea for anyone. Highly recommend!』

(A Magical Restoration)
『It wasn't until a friend of mine showed me the restored version of this particular Disney classic that I realized what wonders it really does for an older animated film.
Sleeping Beauty is brought back to life in this platinum edition with fully restored color and special features disc.
A great investment for sure, and nothing beats having the ability to watch the classic magic of Disney at your fingertips.』

(Classic Disney Movie)
『My granddaughter is 2 years old and she has watched Sleeping Beauty so many times she has memorized some of the scenes! We recently bought a Blu-ray player and purchased this new DVD and the color is spectacular. This is still a classic Disney movie for everyone.』

(Actually, this is pretty boring)
『I bought this for my daughter, thinking this would be a fun family-night movie. I'll admit I don't particularly love the "princess" genre of Disney movie, and this met my low expectations. I'm sorry I bought it because I doubt my daughter will ever want to watch it again.』

(Classic Movie)
『This is a wonderful movie and the restored version is crisp, clean and superbly crafted. This was an excellent purchase. The blu-ray version of Sleeping Beauty was money well spent.』

The adventures continue as you are immersed into a wonderful world of bonus features.

BONUS FEATURES
In the original story, Princess Aurora sleeps for 100 years before being awakened by a prince's kiss. In the Disney version, Prince Philip comes to her rescue much sooner.
George Brun's orchestral score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, expertly blended famous themes from Tchaikovsky's ballet.
With a budget that exceeded $6 million in 1959, this was Walt Disney's most lavish and expensive animated feature to date.
Determined to make the characters as realistic as possible, Disney had a live action film shot with actors posing as Sleeping Beauty, the Prince, and Maleficent, for the animators to use.
New York Times critic Bosley Crowther called the fight between Prince Philip and Maleficent the noisiest and scariest go-round he (Disney) has ever put into one of his films.

『Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney'sSnow White and the Seven Dwarfstaunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

On the Blu-ray

Sleeping Beautywas the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look ofSnow WhiteandPinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However,Sleeping Beautysuffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements ofSnow Whiteand a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip.Sleeping Beautywas originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. The BD-Live features require an awful lot of bother: after wading through (or ignoring) 130 screens of legalese, participants must enter their Social Security number or other personal information in the drawn-out sign-on process. Once that's finally done, viewers can send special messages to pop up during the film, chat online with others who are watching, and view it in synch with others. The question is whether or not you want to. (Rated G: violence)--Charles Solomon

(Very Odd Concept Never gets off the Ground)
『The television series kicks off on the one year anniversary of the ending of the war with the visitors. The Visitors manage to launch a second invasion of earth, an idea that is preposterous in its own right. They have been exposed as man eating reptiles, yet they're somehow able to successfully take back entire cities without interference from state and local law enforcement or the military.

Maybe we are to assume that military installations, etc, have been taken out by the visitors' overwhelming fire power and force. But we never actually see this happen thanks to the show's budget constraints.

No, what we see is visitors walking through parks fully armed and in full uniform, while kids play with a Frisbee, blissfully unconcerned that there are cannibalistic aliens among them. In the visitor infiltrated city of Las Angeles, life seems to be going on as usual.

Because of the budget limitations, there's no sense of this being an oppressive, overwhelming force that is threatening mankind with extinction. These visitors are about as threatening as your local organized crime syndicate. You never get the sense that mankind is threatened with extinction- it just feels like there are two forces inside the city of Las Angeles fighting for control of their turf. It could just as easily have been about the Bloods vs. the Crips.

Nonetheless, an interesting piece of nostalgia that has its moments. Die hard fans of the miniseries should check it out.』

(V)
『this DVD brought back so many memories for me! i remember watching the original mini-series and tv show back in the 80s and being obsessed with them. i remembered so many details while watching these DVDs, it was like i had just seen the episodes a few weeks ago - not 25 years ago!

a MUST BUY for anyone who was a fan of tv in the 80s. :)』

(Good 80's Sci-Fi Show)
『Good show, considering it was the 80's and the acting was horrible at times. Continuity was almost non-existent between episodes, and what is it about laser weapons that can't hit the broadside of a barn? "V-The Complete Series" is the logical conclusion to the original mini-series "V" and the follow up mini-series "V-The Final Battle." Back in the 80's when it was new, it was still hokey but the story was compelling as you want the "Resistance" to defeat the "Visitors" and give "Diana" her due. Compared to the remake on TV now, the quality is night and day, but it was still as good show as it is now. And Diana was "hot" (for a lizard).

If you're a fan of Sci-fi, this is a cult classic. Naturally, if you saw it when it first ran, you need to do your best to ignore the laughable stuff and just enjoy the show. The story could have gone on longer if the continuity issues were fixed and NBC didn't get tired of it, but now we have the remake which changes the story up a bit, but it is as compelling as the original. Make sure you pick up the whole series so you can get into the story. It will help you enjoy the remake that much more.』

(The ORIGINAL V!)
『I thought that the V was so phenomenal when it aired as my family and I watched it relentlessly in the ... 80s, was it?

Well, seeing it recently just let me know how far we've come in technology! Remember the Atari? The Nintendo ORIGINAL console? It was nostalgic to say the least.

The reason I said that the series was just `OK' was because it started off with a pasty, unrealistic special effects fight between Diana and Mike - the leader of the V and the leader of the Resistance. I had not seen the first and second miniseries in over 20 years and so I was thrown off by the shoddy special effects that were unprecedented during the time they aired. I was only thrown off because I had not seen what led up to the beginning of the series. I have watched the original series on the SciFi channel since and have become more excited about finishing the TV series once I have completed the miniseries. In short, I have not yet seen the entire TV series - I stopped the DVD after about 2 minutes of watching it. Once I have, I'll re-write this review.

For now, I'll just tell you don't buy this set unless you have watched both V - The Original TV Miniseries, and V - The Final Battle. If you do, it will be a complete and total turn off.

Thanks for reading this review!
Don't forget to check back later for a full review!』

(YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING)
『I am not a writer or an actor - just another one of the masses with an opinion derived from watching decades of television and film. However, after reading some glowing nostalgic reviews of this 80's miniseries, I just had to get something in print about this flimsy excuse for a sci-fi story. It just reminded me of how tacky and cheesy a lot of the culture of that decade was - not too different than the tackiness of the one that proceeded it.

George Lucas got away with Star Wars as an allegory for the Nazis and
facism by making the whole thing into a "once upon a time" fairy tale set in another galaxy populated by races similar to ours. It also helped that he used beyond state of the art visual effects and original production and costume designs. I'm not putting Star Wars up with Citizen Kane or Shakespeare - just saying it's a well crafted piece of pop culture.

The Twilight Zone also had mostly allegorical stories, but even though they were subverted visually by low budget (and real tacky) effects and costumes, they are still great to watch because of the high level of story and dialogue writing and top notch acting.

Then there is this "V" miniseries pablum. It is the typical soap opera miniseries garbage the the major network television shows spewed out in the 70's and 80's (and lets face it - they still try it). Poor, lazy writing (much of it obviously edited by low payed hacks) and bottom of the barrel production values. I watched ten minutes of this pop culture sugar candy just recently and it just reminded me of how many low points the decade of the '80s had. If ANYONE, even people who may be fans of this series (though I can't imagine why)watched it with any kind of objectivity, they would have say to themselves "why am I even doing this?". Great art direction and effects can make up for some poor dialogue writing and sloppy plotting, but only up to a certain point. When ALL of the movie elements are given short shift, then we end up with a day old cup of pale diner brew like "V" instead of a series like "The Invaders" - which was more like a fresh cup of Jamaican Mountain in a five star hotel balcony overlooking the Caribbean. Remember THAT series? It holds up even now. A good concept - the communist-like takeover of the planet by an alien culture infiltrating us fifth column style. Take the plot from "The Fugitive" and combine it with a creepy, subversive alien take over and you have classic storytelling. No need for bad costumes as in V (my God, the bad uniforms - as if an advanced alien race would wear uniforms similar to our cultures - boots and sunglasses and all)and the Star Trek clone spaceships and shuttles that looked more like our future technology than something alien).

I wish that the major tv networks would give up creating unimaginitve miniseres that are just soap operas tarted up in cheap costumes. HBO and the other cable networks put them in there place over the years with real quality written and acted series. Though I am not a follower of "Battlestar Galactica" - I watched a bit of it just to see if it had the quality critics had been giving it and admit it was done rather well. Imagine if NBC or ABC or CBS had remade it....on second thought - don't!

I don't expect all television and film to always be top quality - I don't mind one and two star creations. It's when drivel like "V" tries to pass itself off as anything of quality that makes me want to shoot the television. Thank God for box sets of "The Twilight Zone".

『They came for water. And for food. And as it turned out, we were the food. But humanity bravely resisted - a struggle seen in the hit miniseries V and V: The Final Battle. Yet the war continues. The heroic conflict comes to a surprising outcome in V: The Series, presented complete and uncut in this 3-disc, 19-episode set. Once again, Earth is the main battleground. But now the aliens whose human guise hides their true reptilian natures are wiser. They believe the secret to their survival on Earth lies in the DNA of the newly born half-human, half-spaceling Starchild. They intend to capture her. But that's something the world's Resistance Fighters cannot allow.』

(Cropped version!)
『It doesn't seem so long ago that when movies on VHS were cropped on the left and right to fit 4:3 screens, people were indignant over losing a third or more of the original image. Producers responded with letterbox format, which then consisted of adding black bars at the top and bottom to preserve the entire original image.

Now for DVD release, older TV shows are cropped at the top and bottom so the original 4:3 image will fit 16:9 screens. Sometimes they now call this letterboxing! Where is the indignation? Why are there so many five-star ratings on Amazon for the V miniseries without mention of how the image was mutilated?

In fact when the first season of Route 66 was released with the top and bottom cropped, there was much indignation, and the producers responded by re-releasing the season in its original format.

I hope fans of V and other great shows will think about this when posting reviews and ratings. The more people give these versions low ratings and state why, the more likely that producers will do the right thing and stop cropping these shows.』

(cardboard case)
『I love the series, but there is nothing final in this battle. You still have to purchase yet another video to make the series end. I did not like how the case is cupboard and not plastic like the rest of the normal dvd movies.』

(V _ Final Battle)
『Fun jolt to the past. The 80's version of high tech is sure to give you a chuckle. Great and memorable characters including the creepy Robert Englund as a goofy lovable alien. The plots are predictable but still fun to watch. The lingo and wardrobe is definitely 80's. The cast is huge so you are almost guaranteed to find a favorite.
With the new series getting made now is a great time to get re-familiar with the show.』

(Once you walk out that door, there's no turning back.)
『In "V: The Miniseries" we see a band of unlikely brothers forge together to stop an indestructible group of aliens determined to rid the world of water and subsequently transform the human race into a combo meal at McDonald's. The aliens eat fuzzy creatures, they like to copulate with humans, and their voices cannot be trusted, yet this group of rebels continues forward. Half homage to past science fiction films, and half an allegory of the events surrounding WWII, "V: The Miniseries" wasn't perfect, but it provided hours of nostalgic entertainment. Now, with "V: The Final Battle", the gloves are thrown off, the symbolic references are destroyed, and the game is transformed into merely a battle between human and alien. It is about resistance, standing up for beliefs, and plenty of fictitious science all rolled into three hours. Our band of outsiders is down, but not finished. They deliver several swift blows to the alien objective and finally one "final battle" that leaves doors unopened and plot holes uncovered. "V: The Final Battle" was a swift ending, but where it built onto action, it lacked that panache that the original episodes did. "The Final Battle" assumed that characters were already developed, and instead of taking a humanistic direction, director Richard Heffron placed his bets on the special effects. This was a completely different ending to a decently sharp beginning.

Heffron isn't Kenneth Johnson, and it is obvious that this is a second part to an idea, not a continuation. Not only have the overall themes changed, but the influx of special effects has lead us down the path of horrid dialogue, randomly placed action scenes (i.e. the fistfight over the powder), and the lack of developed storylines. Johnson may have taken longer to get to the point, but at least there was a point. Heffron went in a completely, some may say bold, direction - but it didn't work. Investing over five hours, one could easily demand a conclusion, but none could be found here. The introduction of Elizabeth (the child of an alien and human) was exciting, but nothing happened. The idea of quick growth was introduced, but then easily forgotten - same as Mike's son being changed as a spy. Again, another strong and vexing idea that was mentioned, and then forgotten. It was these smaller nuances that seemed to be clearer in "The Final Battle" than in the original.

In addition to the lackluster plot, the acting seemed to be progressively getting worse. Our original characters were not the same as in this final set - the excitement seemed to have dissipated and with too many small story arch's never being fully developed, it was no wonder our characters seemed to be lacking that pioneering gumption. Marc Singer's Mike was more a meathead than a leader, the annoying child who gave birth to the spawn seemed more annoying than helpful - and Ham seemed to be unreasonably angrier. This wasn't the same set we stopped with on the miniseries. The resistance was going to win; it was inevitable, so why did it have to be so mismatched to get there.

What was kept? What worked? It was somewhat like that feeling of seeing "Star Wars" for the first time. When the villains finally get it, one cannot help but feel that moment of excitement swell in the throat, but there needed to be more. The alien baby is worth the price of the DVD alone, a cross between originality and a "Ghoulie", it provided at least an hour of laughter. The fist fight between Ham and Mike seemed reminiscent of the film "They Live", so it received some points for that, but overall it just felt cheap. The sets were bigger, the acting was weaker, and the money was tighter. While you should watch this after "The Miniseries", don't expect the same quality.

『Marc Singer, Robert Englund and Michael Ironside in the thrilling sequel miniseries about human resistance to alien invaders - from the birth of the first interspecies child to a harrowing countdown to nuclear doomsday.

DVD Features:
Interactive Menus

『Though followers of current science fiction television series may dismissV: The Final Battleas a quaint relic from the pre-computer animation days, the six-hour miniseries about an alien invasion of Earth was a ratings juggernaut for NBC in 1984 and should still provide some entertainment for hard-bitten devotees and fans of '50s-style sci-fi.The Final Battlepicks up four months after the shock conclusion of the 1983 prequel miniseries, with a small group of humans known as the Resistance struggling to convince their fellow humans that a fleet of seemingly friendly visitors from space are in fact bent on world domination.

Executive producer Kenneth Johnson (who oversaw most aspects of the first series) only supervised the sequel's script (which underwent several changes before its airing), and the writing occasionally suffers due to the lack of his attention. But the series still delivers its share of action and intrigue, as well as one showstopping gruesome moment involving the birth of interspecies twins. Acting is again a stumbling block, with leads Marc Singer and Faye Grant as bland as any performers from the American International Pictures stable; character actor Michael Ironside makes the strongest impression as a tough Resistance member, and a pre-Freddy Krueger Robert Englund is amusing as a kind-hearted alien. The miniseries was followed by an inevitable weekly series featuring most of the same cast, which was demolished in the ratings byDallas, but a faithful Resistance-like following remains to this day.--Paul Gaita

(thoughts on twilight)
『1st...to truly appreciate the movie you have to read the books. I made the mistake of watching the movie 1st and I thought it was terrible. I didn't catch any of the hidden meanings and things left unsaid, But I kept hearing how great the stories were. Anyways, I'm so glad I gave this series a 2nd chance. The movie was much better after I understood what was really going on. I bought all 4 books and the movie and I just watched New Moon. I loved it, I will definitely buy that as well. Stephenie Meyer is a rare gem. We would only be so lucky if she wrote more supernatural thrillers.』

(Wonderful and very atmospheric)
『I am not a fan of vampires, but when this film was recommended to me many times by friends I had to see it to find out what all the fuss was about. I am so glad that I did - it's one of the best films I've seen all year. The film has so much atmosphere and the chemistry between the two main characters is electric. The filming is so beautifully done and the soundtrack compliments it so much. The choice of cast was perfect, the production quality was amazing. The only thing I was unhappy about - the fact that it ended!』

(So Low Budget it hurt..)
『I watched this with my tween sister who thinks Edward is so fantastic...and since I'd read all the books, I also wanted to check out the movie.

I was sadly disappointed.

The Harry Potter movies are obviously not made for any academic audience, but the world is believable. I feel like the movies have made a real world for the characters for me to watch, a word that meets my expectations (almost to the T) that the books gave me. I'm not exactly sure what to make of the Twilight movie. I'm pretty sure a group of high school kids got together and made this as a final project...

I understand that this movie had a very small budget, and I'm able to cut the special effects some slack (but sparkly...seriously? I'm sure there was a less gay way to do that...I mean, if I were Pattinson, and I'm a girl by the way, I would have been pretty pissed at how sparkly I was. DIAMONDS, NOT GLITTER!)

The acting was...atrocious. I've never heard of Kristen Stewart before, to be totally honest, so I have nothing else to compare her to. I've seen Pattinson in Goblet of Fire, obviously, and I thought he did pretty well in that, granted his on screen time with lines was next to nothing. I don't know if it was the low budget-ness or a bad acting coach, bad director or what happened here...but it definitely belonged in an independent film festival and not on the big screen (sorry to offend any independent film makers, because I've seen quite a few amazing independent films).

The dialogue felt forced most of the time...like the screen writer wrote part of it and didn't know how to fill in space so it was up to the actors to improv...about all the time.

And the make up? What did they do to Pattinson? I saw him in Goblet of Fire, and I about drooled all over myself. What the heck happened in this movie?! Was there too much make up? Was it cheap? Or is he just not right for this part? I saw him in a preview for another movie he's got coming out and he seemed like a good enough actor, and looked normal...so I must blame this movie for his performance in this. And no, I'm not saying Pattinson is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'm not a 15 year old girl who nourishes a dream that I'll meet him some day.

I knew most of this going into the movie, though, so I can't say I was too upset by it. I don't see how it could have made new fans by it, I was certain it would be "Twi-hards" only that would fall for this movie, but I am wrong again. Oh, and New Moon broke records this week and is now the 3rd highest grossing film! Admittedly, it was better than Twilight, but they did not fix the sparkly vampire and the only thing that made me enjoy it was watching Taylor Lautner without a shirt for about 3/4 of it. Oh, and yes, I do secretly dream that he's about three years older and falls madly inlove with me someday ;)』

(I love Twilight!)
『The movie was just as good as the book! I loved the series and I just watched "New Moon" yesterday.』

(An Honest, Neutral Review of Why "Twilight" is NOT a Good Film)
『The Twilight Saga is unavoidable in both film and book form. The books, which I've never read, were bestsellers and the recent release of "New Moon," the film is breaking records. Teenage girls are absolutely gaga for the star Robert Pattinson and it finally intrigued me enough to watch this film. I do have a slightly biased opinion as the entire premise of the film seemed ludicrous to me, but I found a glimmer of hope in the film's director Catherine Hardwicke, who was responsible for the very honest look at teenagers with the film "Thirteen."

What really surprised me about this film is that it doesn't have much of a plot. Kristen Stewart plays Isabella "Bella" Swan, who moves from Arizona to Forks, Washington to stay with her father (Billy Burke). Bella inexplicably begins school moments after arriving in Forks and discovers The Cullen's, a group of mysterious foster kids from Alaska. Even more mysterious and intriguing, to her and the rest of the student body, is Edward Cullen (Pattinson), a quiet, pale, reserved 17-year-old. Bella starts to notice the Cullen's are more than just a little different and when Edward stops a van from running her over, she realizes that he may not even be human...99% of the world knows that he's a vampire, but not a vampire of the typical, blood-sucking variety. The Cullen's are "vegetarian" vampires who only snack on the blood of animals. There's a story here, obviously but nothing really happens in it.

Almost everything here is underwritten, characters and plot included. The characterization is particularly hollow and calling the characters "characters," is inaccurate; these are names with pretty faces attached to them. We're talking about a film here with an uneventful plot and characters completely void of depth. Twilight is supposed to be a supernatural love story geared towards a teenage demographic, but where's the emotion or poignancy that a love story needs in order to work as one? It's certainly not here. The dialogue in this movie is so melodramatic, I almost felt nauseous. The conversations between Bella and Edward are particularly embarrassing to watch. This does not sound like the "Romeo&Juliet" of the 21st Century, but the banter of two prepubescent children. A quick example; "Beautiful? This is the skin of a killer, Bella."

As for the performances, no one seems to be putting any effort into them. Pattinson looks uncomfortable and his facial expressions, as well as his delivery of the film's dialogue sound pain fully forced. I do believe Hardwicke is a talented director, but she made a lot of poor creative choices here starting with her decision to direct such a poorly written script in the first place. One of her most annoying directorial decisions was her overuse of the slow-motion to illustrate the anxiety of a character. I can say only one positive thing about the film's production value and that is the somber, gray color palette utilized by the film's cinematographer...It could've been really effective if the tone of the overall film had been altered. Anyone who doesn't agree with what I'm saying about the film's poor quality need look no further than the baseball scene. How horribly executed can a scene be? The acting, the dialogue, the choice of music, Pattinson's snarl, and the cinematography are so bad it's embarrassing. Finally, this scene has no relevance to the plot of the film. It's muddled, meandering filler slipped into the film as an excuse to bring the character's to a different conflict in the story. If I was not aware of the inescapable Twilight frenzy, I would swear this film was a direct-to-DVD release; no one with a knowledge or appreciation of American cinema would call Twilight a good movie.

Quite frankly, watching Twilight was like watching a high-school play written by a socially inept teenager. Obviously, my opinion isn't going to affect the success of the series. Twilight is one of those things that strikes some chord with young American audiences and has become a record-breaking smash success. I guarantee that Twilight will not remain a part of the American moviegoer's consciousness for any prolonged amount of time and just like hugely successful boy bands, this is a phase that will fade away in time.

Twilight left me shaking my head so many times in the two hours I was watching it. I was not fascinated, intrigued, or stimulated about anything going on in the film and the only way I can imagine someone being those things is if they were not educated. That last part is sarcasm, but quite honestly this is a film that people will look back on ten years from now and think "how did I possibly think that was any good."

『Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (summit) Release Date: 05/05/2009 Run time: 122 minutes Rating: Pg13』
『The big-screen adaptation ofTwilight, Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire romance, is aimed squarely at its key demographic: teen girls whose idea of Prince Charming is a brooding, pale, undead teen who could kill you instantly at any moment. Such a prince is more fascinating than frightening to new girl Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves to the rainy-gray town of Forks, Wash., to live with her dad (Billy Burke), the local sheriff who's puzzled by a series of "animal attacks." On her first day at school, Bella appears to (visibly) nauseate her lab partner, Edward (Robert Pattinson). Turns out the scent of her blood is this vampire's "brand of heroin," and his struggle not to kill her causes an irresistible pull toward her. Whether he's attracted for the normal reasons or because she smells especially sweet to him is vague in the book and even less clear on-screen; nonetheless, Bella falls hopelessly in love with Edward, which sets her on a dangerous path when a few nomad vampires show up in town, one particularly keen on tracking the human. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen),Twilightis full of funny moments--not all of which are intentional--and the casting, from Stewart to Bella's self-absorbed friend Jessica (Anna Kendrick) is spot-on. The weakest link, unfortunately, is Pattinson. While he certainly looks the part, his Edward could have used an extra injection of testosterone (Pattinson, who is British, used James Dean as a model for his American accent). In scenes where he growls about the temptation to kill those who would harm Bella, or flitting around a forest warning her how dangerous he is, he comes off more like a whimpering puppy than a debonair monster. The good news is, his chemistry with Stewart (particularly in their big kissing scene) is palpable, which, let's face it, is really what matters toTwilightfans most. --Ellen A. Kim

On the DVD
The special features forTwilightkick off with an audio commentary with director Catherine Hardwicke and stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. There's some mumbling and groaning from Stewart (one gets the impression that Stewart is quite similar to her reserved character in the film), some standard behind-the-scenes observations from Hardwicke, and a lot of awkward self-deprecating remarks from Pattinson (of their big kiss, he opines: "This is quite difficult 'cause I have a really flat head, and so it's quite difficult to get a correct angle."). What's funny is Pattinson stumping Hardwicke with some basic plot questions, like "Why doesn't James just kill [Bella when she's packing at her house]?" While Hardwicke and Stewart attempt to answer, Pattinson doesn't appear satisfied. The deleted and extended scenes include an additional dream-sequence kiss (rightly cut because it took away from the buildup to their first kiss) and more footage of Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre). The seven-part documentary is a pretty thorough look at the development of the film, including stunts, special effects, and the involvement of author Stephenie Meyer. Another featurette looks at the Comic-Con frenzy; however, it spends no time on how the actors were cast, which would have been fun for fans who did all their own mental casting while reading the books. Also included: three music videos and trailers. --Ellen A. Kim

(Great series! Lots of fun.)
『Supernatural takes lots of imagination to watch. None of the plots are based in reality, though they do have realistic elements. The acting is not superb, but for what the series is, the two main actors do a great job of making the characters believable... and the situations they find themselves in. Seeing how the characters deal with each really dire adversity situation is a hoot.

We actually started watching the show just this season, which is the series 5th season, and we bought all the seasons before just to catch up. It's a lot of fun to watch, and we look forward to watching each evening, since the regular TV fare is generally dismal.』

『Twenty-two years ago, Sam (series star JARED PADALECKI) and Dean (series star JENSEN ACKLES) Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. As a result, their father, John (recurring guest star JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN - "Grey's Anatomy"), raised the brothers to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it. Sam, however, wanted nothing to do with this violent and dangerous life, and he left it behind, until the day Dean appeared on his doorstep with troubling news. Their father had gone missing on a "hunting trip." Sam and Dean have spent the last year cruising the highwaysof the United States in their 1967 Chevy Impala, searching for their lost father and encountering creatures that most people believe exist only in folklore, superstition and nightmares. Along the way, they have battled the various supernatural threats--and each other as well, for their sibling rivalries and conflicts were never far from the surface. Finally, they found their father, just as he was closing in on the Demon who claimed their mother.

『As programs ranging fromKolchak: The Night Stalkerto, well,Night Stalkerhave proven, it's difficult to scare TV audiences on a weekly basis, butSupernaturalseems to broken the trend. Not only has its blend ofRoute 66andThe X-Filesprovided some of the more chilling TV moments in recent history, but its core story--two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) battle the forces of evil to avenge their late mother--has been compelling enough to warrant a second season, which is compiled in its entirety on this six-disc set. Season Two maintains the show's "Monster of the Week" approach while adding compelling layers to the main characters and their history; in "What Is And What Should Never Be," a djinn offers the boys a glimpse of how their lives might've played out had their mother not succumbed to demonic forces, while the two-part "All Hell Breaks Loose" brings the season to a close with not only a rift between Sam and Dean, but the gates of Hell swinging open to unleash monstrous spirits. And if that's not enough of a creepshow for you, the boys also encounter a cannibal clown ("Everybody Loves a Clown"), seductive demons ("Crossroad Blues"), a town gripped by mass psychosis ("Croatoan"), as well as a barrage of ghosts, vampires and werewolves. If it's chills you want, the second season ofSupernaturalhas them by the score. There's also a wealth of extras on theComplete Second Seasonset that should please longtime fans and help newcomers catch up with developments since the show's debut. Informative and entertaining commentaries are featured on three episodes: "In My Time of Dying" (by Ackles and Padalecki), "What Is And What Never Should Be" (by series creator Eric Kripke), and "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1" (by Kripke, writer Sera Gambles, and director Robert Singer). There's also a featurette on "All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2" that offers observations by the cast and crew on the season as a whole; viewers should note that the 11-minute short is difficult to find and is accessible only after accessing "The Devil's Road Map," a virtual tour of the places (and monsters) visited throughout the show's history. Padalecki's screen test for the role of Sam is also included, as well as three webisodes about the writers, visual effects and props for the show, and an amusing gag reel.-- Paul Gaita

(Witty&wry - just forget the tired cliches)
『My first impression about a quarter way into this movie, was "Oh, NO! Another aliens-as-racial-minority metaphor!" Yes, yes, I know all that, I just wanna be entertained- that theme's been done, then done again, then again ..ad nauseum. I was thinking the only way to save the plot line was to have the aliens relocated to Chicago as new Obama voters. Then I was pleasantly surprised.

So what does save this movie and transcends it beyond the predictable racism-is-bad, apartheid-is-bad "message", what saves it is that ultimately it doesn't take itself seriously, at which point the movie becomes immensely entertaining. The matter of fact story telling absorbs the viewer to accept the premise despite one's common sense. Looking like something I ate at last summer's clambake, the alien CGI is nearly flawless.

Best of all, the witty screenplay has such wry humor that it leaves nothing and no one unscathed. From the Afrikaner elites, to the S.A. Blacks ( who, themselves victims of cruel apartheid, display the same sentiments to these new arrivals), to the aliens themselves portrayed more like insects with a gusto for cat food and tires, advanced technology notwithstanding. Not to mention the proverbial military-industrial complex (always a good villain). Even political correctness is mocked as we follow that dolt of a protagonist's rise via nepotism to a position of authority. His adventures inspecting the District is a rich example of sarcasm as mockumentary.

Of course the tired apartheid-alien message continues throughout the movie: segregated slums, Nazi inspired experiments, sham laws, forced mass evacuations, one from the "majority" transforming into one of the "minority". But as the movie progresses this theme becomes so cliche that it barely rises to consciousness and renders it meaningless. And that is a good thing. There's a world of serious cinema dealing with that subject more worthy to explore than a movie such as this. At best, maybe use it as a teaching tool on your middle-schooler about the lessons of apartheid.

So to all initially put off about this film, I say give it a view. It won't disappoint.』

(Totally Unexpected)
『This was a totally unexpected movie... the greatest Sci Fi I've seen in a long time. It was so unexpected that I made the mistake of sitting very close to the screen. One advice, if you go see it, sit in the back row, or you will get dizzy... But nevertheless it was GREAT!!!』

(Great scifi)
『A really good science fiction movie. The beginning is a little rough, but you cannot stop watching and by the end you realize that you have just seen a damn good movie. The symbolism is so transparent, but watch the movie for entertainment purposes and you won't be disappointed.』

(Terrible)
『I saw this movie when it came out in theatres. I fought the urge to get up and leave thru the entire movie and when the end came I really wished that I had left. That is two hours of my life I will never get back. Don't waste your time on this movie the whole documentary style filming was just irritating and distracting. If you have two hours to waste I would use it doing something else.』

(district 9)
『a first time director with a 10,000 budget created this eye popping and jaw dropping movie. the movie is hitting the millions in profits. one of the best movies that i have ever seen as a critic and one of the most intense metaphors ever putted on motion. must see』
『From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed... only to be exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg. Now, one lone human discovers the mysterious secret of the extraterrestrial weapon technology. Hunted and hounded through the bizarre back alleys of an alien shantytown, he will discover what it means to be the ultimate outsider on your own planet.』
『A provocative science fiction drama,District 9boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa,District 9begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft.

Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly planning an escape from Earth, however, what should be a fascinating relationship story becomes a series of firefights and explosions. Nuance is lost to numbing violence, and the more interesting potential of the film is obscured. Yet, for a whileDistrict 9is a powerful movie with a unique tale to tell. Seamless special effects alone are worth seeing: the (often brutal) exchanges between alien and human are breathtaking.--Tom Keogh

(Great Remastering of a Disney Classic)
『The Snow White on Blu-Ray looks fantastic. A remastering of a classic... not much to say if you've seen Snow White. I love that it comes with a DVD copy as well. This is great so that you can play on the DVD player in the car for the kids, while still having blu-ray quality at home. Definitely worth adding to your movie collection.』

(Snow White Blu-Ray)
『Haven't seen this since childhood, many decades ago. Forgot how delightful this film really is. Recommend it to everyone, whether you have children or not. It will bring out the child in you as you reflect.』

(A Classic Strikes Again)
『There is little I can really say about this movie besides the differences between it and the older classic we all know and love.

1. The movie has the option of showing paintings on the sides of the film to expand it to widescreen size. I used these and while they looked kind of cool didn't really feel like the biggest improvement to me.
2. The sound and picture quality is good but it's a really old film so you can't really push the level of detail up too much. It performs well given the medium, however.

In general, you likely can makedo with just the DVD. The fact this combo comes with both a DVD and a Bluray disk obviously is hinting that while bluray is likely the wave of the future not much has changed given it can't really.

I'd suggest buying this if you have a bluray player otherwise just considering buying the DVD alone if you can find it.』

『If you are a fan of the Disney Classics, you have to pick up Snow White on Blu-Ray/DVD Combo. They film has been remastered and has never looked or sounded better. We previously had Snow White on VHS and the difference between the two is astounding.

In case you haven't seen Snow White, I have to tell you to beware as it is quite violent. I watched it with my daughter and I was shocked at how much more violent it was than I remembered it. The Wicked Witch orders the hunter to kill Snow White and cut out her heart. There is also a seen in which the hunter is standing behind Snow White with a knife, in position to stab her. So, this may not be the best movie to watch with your little one. You might want to watch it first and fast forward through the scary parts when watching with a child.』

Through astonishing Blu-ray high definition technology, experience this timeless classic in its most spectacular presentation ever! With an all-new, state-of-the-art digital restoration and Disney Enhanced High Definition sound, the breathtaking animation and unforgettable music of the most revered Disney film of all time will enthrall you like never before!

『One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed.--Tom Keogh

(Goodbye Atlantis.)
『A fond farewell to one of the best ever spin off series.Like the original Stargate,Atlantis was blessed with a great cast although it is a shame that it went through three Commanders in it five seasen run.I hope that we have not seen the last of the Atlantis crew and that some TV Movies will be made too.』

(Wish they didn't stop the series!)
『Outstanding Series. I'm a Stargate addict. I now own all 10 seasons of SG-1 and all 5 seasons of Atlantis.』

(Great Fifth Season)
『Stargate Atlantis was the best, I love to watch the actors and the story lines are always great. Too bad this was the last season because the new Stargate Universe just does not cut it. The actors in Atlantis are much better and the colorful Atlantis and the other scenes were great to watch. The new Universe is dull looking and boring.
Hope that anyone that watches any of the stargate Atlantis Seasons loves them as much as I do.』

(More please!)
『Imaginative plots, cracking special effects that just get better, top notch scrapes and perils.

Season highlights for me included:
1. Some more of Carson Beckett.
2. `The Daedalus Variations' - plenty of action and lots of tension.
3. `Ghost in the Machine' - great twists.
4. `The Shrine' - you know what's going to happen after the first five minutes but you still revel in the snappy interaction between the characters. David Hewlett really shows a different side to McKay here with some excellent acting. Very clever. Touchingly woven threads.
5. Dr. Daniel Jackson's return in a double episode. Powerful stories, thundering great bad guys. However, the promised banter between McKay and Jackson is not as clever as I'd hoped.
6. `Identity' - nice bit of confusion and plenty of toughing it out.
7. `Vegas' - very enjoyable character twists for Sheppard and McKay.
8. Nice to see some plausible romantic interludes.
9. Interesting special features on each disc.
10. Cool packaging. The single box works very well with two hinged disc holders.

Why stop here? I've heard of quitting while you're ahead but even by Season 5, it seems like there's more to come than has already gone. There must be whole planet loads of potential in those space ship dwellers with the trixsy leaderene that Sheppard had the hots for but kept getting outwitted by. There must be a girl for Ronan somewhere - one that could punch him out if she had to but who likes him, too. The Genii? More Todd? This is not counting new bad guys we've not even seen yet. I hope a good quality straight to dvd movie and Stargate Universe will take the pain out of this being the last season.

In summary: Season Five - it's all so good, I'm going to have to watch it again!』

(Ending a series)
『I guess there are just som many plots that you can come up with in a galaxy far far away, but still I liked it. Knowing that it was the last season kept me waiting to see how it would end. Right up until the end it just carried on like it was goin to go on for years. Then the last episode "BOOM" all of it in all at once. I hope there is a movie coming out now to tie it together. Isn't that what is supposed to happen?』
『In this action-packed fifth season sparks fly when Woolsey becomes the new leader of the Atlantis team. Meanwhile, McKay faces difficult personal challenges; Teyla must balance her roles as mother and warrior; Ronan’s past returns with a vengeance, and Keller finds peril, then help, from an unlikely source. A provisional relationship with the Wraith takes a shocking turn and new adversaries test the team’s courage and resolve like never before.』
『As the curtain is drawn on the first of the 20 episodes that comprise this fifth (and apparently last) season ofStargate Atlantis, we’re assured that “the threat level is down” across the universe. The “sentient machines” known as the Replicators have been defeated; The Wraith, the white-haired, translucent-skinned, cat-eyed vampire dudes who have been our heroes’ principal nemeses all along, are in disarray; And while the character known as Michael, who was the subject of the team's ongoing ""retro-virus"" experiment (designed to make Wraiths human) in Season Two and played a significant recurring role in Season Three, is still around, he too no longer inspires much dread. So, “the threat level is down,” right? Yeah, right. You don’t need to be an astrophysicist to know that rosy analysis is mere wishful thinking. Indeed, Michael’s human-Wraith “hybrids” are a serious menace almost immediately; and by the end of the season, not only have the Wraith pulled themselves together, they have constructed the mother of all “hive ships,” located Planet Earth, and begun attacking it. In between, regularAtlantisfans will witness a few significant developments: among other things, Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1veteran Amanda Tapping), who took over command of Atlantis in Season Four, is soon replaced by the by-the-book civilian Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo); team member Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) has a baby; and Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), the kvetching genius scientist, and medical doc Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite) kindle a romantic relationship. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), anotherSG-1veteran, appears in two mid-season episodes.

Story-wise, Season Five offers considerable variety;“The Daedalus Variations” is heady sci-fi filled with technical mumbo-jumbo about parallel universes, while “Whispers” is a zombie jamboree straight out ofNight of the Living Dead, andVegas, an“alternate reality episode” in which Lt. Col. John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan, in what is still the show’s most appealing role) plays a beleaguered homicide detective, takes place almost entirely in that city. As usual, the best stories are the ones involving the Wraith, including “The Queen,”in which Teyla temporarily transforms into one of those villainous creatures. Also as usual, the visual effects are first-rate, and the bonus material is copious (including commentaries for every episode and all manner of featurettes) and impressive. If this is indeed the end ofStargate Atlantisas a series (a feature-length movie is already in production), it will certainly be missed--but at least they’re quitting while they’re ahead.--Sam Graham

(Season one. the story begins.)
『The first season of Supernatural, is a "must-see" part of popular culture. Anyone who likes comedy, drama and a good old fasion scare, will love supernatural. Sam and Dean are looking for their father, and soon discover what really happened during their childhood, Who killed their mother!?
In every episode Sam and Dean must fight a new creature of the night, to make the world a safer place. And the dark and scary mood of the first season is a work of art. The episodes vary quite a bit, in one episode there is a lot of brother drama, in another you will laugh so hard, but what they all have in common is the fact that you will be watching them with the doors locked and the light on. They give you the good old scare!』

(Fantastic and original TV series)
『What caught my attention about this series was the relationship between the two brothers, who are protecting people while looking for their Mom's killer and their missing Dad. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are incredible as brothers Sam and Dean with Jefferey Dean Morgan playing their father John...the subtle play of emotions between the three is well done-I'm convinced their father and sons. The fact that what is being hunted are monsters based upon Urban Legends and Folklore is a bonus for me-I can't get enough of these stories! My favorite episodes are the ones with Meg Masters...Nicki Aycox is so scary good playing this character...and she gives the Winchesters a run for their money (actually lives).』

(What a great show)
『This show is fun to watch. I never knew either actor in the show, but by end of the season I love both of them. I will be buying the rest of the seasons.』

(supernatural season 1)
『I bought this as a present for my daughter. She loves it. I thought it was a great value. We watch it on tv every week and really enjoy the show. So I thought it would be a wonderful addition to our dvd collection. I would however keep it as a show for older children. Some of the "demons and monsters" can be scary for little ones.』

(Scary, Funny AND has a Storyline?! Perfect!)
『This show brings to television all the creepies and crawlies and man-eating beasties that we all love and deny we fear. It also tosses in some great laughs. What's not to love?

The series starts by introducing a little back story for the Winchester brothers, Dean and Sam, respectively. Then it takes you to present day Sam, the baby of the family, now in college. Then in walks Dean, the classic overprotective, jerk big brother. The first season of the show is about the brothers setting out to find their Dad who has disappeared on a "hunting" trip and the creepy things they encounter on their search.

The dynamic between the two brothers is hilarious and can at times only be called a Bromance. With Dean plaguing "Sammy" constantly then turning around and risking his life for him. This creates an almost sentimental backdrop for a show that oozes horror and/or gore at every turn.

If you like horror, action, suspense, comedy, Bromances, or anything else for that matter, you'll want to check out this show. It's a show that everyone (except maybe the younger kids) can watch.

Guys, girls, parents, grandparents, anyone can watch this show and love it!』

『Bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous, otherworldly mission, two brothers travel in mysterious back roads of the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, searching for their missing father--and hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way. Bring home all 22 episodes of the first season of the thrilling new show, Supernatural along with must-own bonus features. Supernatural is a completely new kind of thrill ride that takes viewers on a journey into the dark world of the unexplained.

『Call itKolchak: The Night Stalker, The College YearsorBuffy the Vampire Slayer for Boys, but the horror seriesSupernaturaldelivers some of the most satisfying small-screen scares in recent memory. The premise is deceptively simple: brothers Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki fromGilmore Girlsand Jensen Ackles, both appealing) travel the darker corners of the American landscape in search of their father, who's gone missing while hunting the malevolent forces that lead to the death of their mother. In the course of their search, the siblings encounter a host of otherworldly creatures, including vampires, ghosts, and witches, as well as such distinctly American phenomena as the urban-legend favorite the Hook ("Hookman"), monsters from Native American mythology ("Wendigo"), and fearful figures from children's games ("Bloody Mary").Supernatural's integration of elements from American pop culture and folklore, combined with its skilled cast and crew (creator/co-writer Erik Kripke delivered 2005'sBoogeyman, while director/executive producer David Nutter is a veteran ofThe X-FilesandMillennium), and better-than-average attempts at atmosphere and suspense place the series well above the other spookshow programs that arrived on networks at about the same time (Invasion,Night Stalker), and should hold considerable appeal for fans of frightful fare.

The six-disc set contains all 22 episodes of the debut season, with commentary by Ackles and Padalecki on "Phantom Traveler" and Nutter, Kripke, and producer Peter Johnson on the pilot episode; two making-of documentaries (one on the show itself, and the other on its stars), as well as a brace of unaired scenes and a gag reel round out the set. For those with DVD-ROM capabilities, the set also includes a link to a web site which offers a sneak preview at season 2 and the pilot script, among other bonus features.--Paul Gaita
