(love it!)
『I loved it. I am the President of the Greenville Society for Japanese Animation and Culture, and we are currently watching this one. It is action packed and full of drama. The animation is top notch and the character designs are charming. The story line is full of ups and downs. And for once, I agree with the choice of American voice actors, they fit their roles perfectly.』

(Difficult to remember title, easy to remember story.)
『First of all, let me say that no aspect of this series is outstanding. Rather than being brilliant at one thing, it's more of a good all-round series. It's a solid series; one that fans of war stories set in the ancient past will get into from the get-go. And, despite the main character having his own harem, it's safe to say the series can be enjoyed even by those who dislike harem series.

The story starts with a man getting found injured in the forest near a small farming village. He has a mask, no memories and doesn't have a clue who he is or what he was doing in the forest. He quickly becomes friends with Eluluu, the young healer who found him, and her little sister, Aruruu. He gets given the name Hakuro by the village chief - the name of Eluluu and Aruruu's father.

At first all is well but the situation quickly turns ugly. Hakuro has to come up with a tactic to save the villagers from being eaten alive by the angry 'God' of the forest. He does so, and earns the respect of the entire village. Then the local feudal lord pays a visit to the town in order to collect taxes. One of the guards kills the village chief, resulting in Hakuro being named chief, and he helps the angered villagers lead a rebellion against the feudal lord. Hakuro kills him, which leads to the Emperor getting involved in an attempt to avenge his brother.

From there, the series takes a path fans of the Suikoden video game series will be familiar with: armies fight, new, super strong allies join and, bit by bit, Hakuro's army grows in power. Soon a mere rebellion transforms into a war between nations, with war after war following Hakuro as he rises to power, as if caused by him. As he continues to become more powerful, staining his hands with more and more blood, the questions of who he is and if what he's doing is right become increasingly troubling.

Where the story falls short, after an involving opening and enjoyable middle, is the ending. Prior to the last section of the story, it had been fast-paced bows and arrows warfare. Aside from a few winged magic users, there'd been nothing to suggest the ending would be quite so ridiculous. All of a sudden robots come into the picture, with one nation destroying all others with these machines, and Hakuro's true identity is revealed during the mecha action. In an attempt not to spoil the story, I'll just say that Gods, evolution, space stations, hi-tech science labs, blob monsters, reincarnation, a Godzilla style final battle and all of the usual anime ending stuff you can think of comes into play. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, actually... It's best just to say it ends in a horrible manner and leave it at that. It's a shame because if the series had ended like it started, without all of the seemingly random rubbish, it could've been a top anime.

The ending aside, my other story issue lies with the battle tactics. Hakuro's tactics usually come down to him telling people to go left or right and him letting his elite soldiers slaughter the enemy soldiers. With the main character playing the role of tactician and the story being about him quickly rising to power, I expected in-depth, jaw dropping battle strategies. Maybe I was expecting too much? I don't know, but it's fair to say the battles could've been more complex.

While on the subject of battles, if you've played any of the Dynasty Warrior games you'll have a good idea how the combat goes in Utaware. The generals are all powerful, killing the grunts with one blow, and the proper, more intense combat involves one on one battles between opposing generals. But the combat isn't very exciting, with some animation recycling occurring and the important fights just simply failing to get my blood pumping. It's a shame because some dodgy, out of place CG aside, Utaware is lovely to look at. The art is appealing, the colours vibrant and, as far as I'm aware, the backgrounds were all drawn by hand, giving them extra charm.

To end my story comments on a positive note, I'll end by saying that, if nothing else, the Utaware story is an entertaining one to sit through. The story is always on the move, with there rarely being episodes not focused on the on-going struggles of Hakuro, and it flows excellently from episode to episode. Another story positive is lack of perverted content. I may be little off when I say this but I think the game the anime was based on was an erotic one, involving Hakuro picking one of the female characters to be his girl. While there are elements of this in the plot, in the anime it comes across more like a straight-forward romance that develops in a logical way as the series progresses. The only scene that comes close to crossing the line is one where Karula - a warrior with a HUGE sword and big boobs - offers herself to Hakuro in exchange for his help and almost gets accepted. Overall, the series was highly enjoyable and surprisingly tasteful.

In terms of the huge cast of characters, Utaware is a little hit and miss. The cast are more likeable than well developed. The main cast members all stand-out, with most of their names and personalities sticking in my mind straight away, but not many get fleshed out. You learn their quirks and that's it for the most part. Hakuro gets the most time, as you'd expect with him being the main character, but you never see a lot of his past, and what's shown isn't very clear. Eluluu, the female lead, is cute and likeable enough and her interaction with Hakuro and her little sister, Aruruu, adds depth to her character but she very rarely came across like a real person. Aside from those two, only Oboro and Karula get decent development. Oboro fights whilst constantly worrying about his blind and bedridden little sister (some early episodes focus on this subplot) and Karula has her own little story relating to her past. In short, the cast have a lot of likability but fairly limited development, with a lot of the blame for this laying with the series length.

As for the music, Utaware has a solid soundtrack. There are some memorable tracks and lots of fitting music that, while unlikely to be listened to outside of the anime, improves the viewing experience. The opening and ending themes are very good, the opening in particular sticking in my mind.

All in all, Utaware surpassed my expectations but still ended up disappointing me because of how it ended. Until the final volume I was prepared to score it in the 9-10/10 tier, but it'll have to make do with a solid 8/10 instead. I respect the series for not being perverted despite it being based on an erotic game and having a large cast of attractive females. At worst, you could say it panders to the moe market a little, but there's nothing included that made me think the series was aimed more at perverts than people looking for a good story. I recommend anyone looking for some primitive, bows and arrows war look the series up.

Rating: 8/10

-----------

There's one last, non-vital thing I'd like to touch upon: the DVD extras.

Included on the Utaware DVDs is a four part omake series. These short episodes focus on light-hearted fun - very different from the usually serious main story, and I rated the omake series 9/10; one point higher than the main series. Why the rating, you ask? Because the omakes are hilarious. I'm not the sort of guy who roles around laughing, but even I laughed during the third episode when, after Oboro had broke her doll, Touka went insane, beating the crap out of Oboro and making some of the most weird and amusing screams I've ever heard. I loved how Hakuro left the room after seeing Touka's bloody hand and crazy expression, leaving Oboro to his fate (once again!).

Do yourself a favour and watch the Utaware extras. You won't regret it.』

(A Pleasure for all...)
『This story is enthralling! The characters grow and relationships blossom, pulling in viewers who love stories about believable characters(the writers make the character's quite lovable!).
It is easy to see how this story could have formed from a game, with the main character's having to survive one assault after another; the plot never stops moving. When the tale starts to swing too violent or to sappy for too long, it starts to move back the other way. So in spots that get too predictably sappy; then you know the plot's about to twist.
A viewer can enjoy this continual struggle for survival while watching the army battles and the personal duals! The story stays true to war and some of your favorite characters die, but the action rarely stops to even grieve.
But the story goes way beyond a simple battle with it's surprisingly beautiful and rich depth contained in the main characters. If you like action, or soft touching drama, this anime is it! Oh, and it's got fox tails, feathered wings and such are here too...』

(Great Anime)
『This is a great anime and a must have. If your into great story lines and some comedy this is the perfect anime. It is one you can watch over and over.』

(An Incredible Series That Well Have You Cheering For The Characters From Start To Finish)
『This series turned out to be another great find and for any anime fan of fantasy or action this series well be a great collection set for your library. The story focuses on a mysterious man wearing a partial mask who's found by the granddaughter of the village healer with no memory of who he is the healer give him the name of Hakuoro, Hakuoro is quickly befriended by the villagers, the healer's granddaughter Eluluu and after gaining her trust Eluluu's younger sister Aruruu. Than he finds out that the villagers are being basically bullied by the local lord and his son and after one of the lords soldiers mistakenly kills the healer who's both well loved and respected by the villagers helps lead them to an uprising against the lord, and later the emperor himself since the lord was the younger brother of the emperor and the emperor wanted revenge against the villagers for rising against him. Thus we come to the main story plot of the series Hakuoro becomes the new leader of the country after the emperor is killed and with help of his entourage of friends and loyal allies tries to bring stability and harmony to the new country of Tuskuru(Named an reverence to the village healer). The series has a wide cast of characters throughout the series you'll grow greatly fond of and cheer for with their victories, and sadly there are scenes that will cause you to shed a few tears as some characters you grow fond of are killed as well as a few other touching scenes. The series will also have some humor in it so it won't be all dramatic but it is bloody so I'd advise people who have young kids to be cautious, that's not to say they can't watch it but if you feel that the scenes are to blood for your kids than just fast forward over them. Also they have some light adult scenes not any nudity or hentai scenes but more of attempted seductions and flirtations between some of the characters. The video is wide-screen sharp and clear as always with these recent anime series and the voice cast for the English and Japanese actors was incredible they played their roles right on the money. Sadly if your a fan who likes the extras like commentaries and the such you won't get that with this box set it only has the standard textless intro/ending songs and some trailers that's it. That all said if you like the series Inuyasha, Basilisk, or just like action this incredible series awaits you....』
『Everything about him is shrouded in mystery. The mask he can’t remove. The past he can’t unravel. And the very survival of the people who have chosen him as their leader. But what Hakuoro does know is this: He was gravely injured and left for dead in a forest. A kind, young girl named Eluluu found him and nursed him back to health. And he was welcomed into a barren land where strange creatures roam, an angry god seeks vengeance, an oppressive government slaughters the innocent, and a bloody war looms on the horizon. Will the masked hero liberate the people who saved him? Can he unlock the memories that elude him? Or will he remain a stranger even to himself? The answers are right before you (or are they?).

(My Review)
『I like this series. Love how Conan (aka Jimmy)solves the cases and tells how it was done.』

(Danny K Case Closed Fourth Season)
『I enjoy this item because I like the cartoons. I used to watch this on regular TV but when it was discontinued, I started purchasing these episodes. They are very good and as long as they available on sale, I will be purchasing them. I recently placed an order for the Sason Five episodes. I am looking forward to them.』

(A Family Favorite)
『Our whole family loves the Case Closed series. This was a great set because there were many episodes that we did not get to see before. Each time, the first time through, it's always exciting to try and guess the outcome. Some of these had me stumped and my sons too. This was a birthday present for my younger son Brad; Good Pick! We're ready for Season 5!』

(Good episodes overall, but FUNimation disappointed me)
『I just got the set two days ago and each episode was great. Conan was shown as the tone deaf person he really is and the cases were as good as their manga counterparts, but I was disappointed by the misleading label. In the past, FUNimation has always listed episode that were one-hour long as separate episodes and played it all the way through with no breaks, when you viewed the episode (Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, Mist Goblin, and Phantom Thief 1412, as examples of what they did in earlier releases). However, with this set they took a two-hour long episode and literally separated it into four episodes. It obvious that it was supposed to be 2-hours because they show scenes from the entire episode each of the four times the opening came up. Now, this does not mean that I will not continue supporting the U.S. release of the show, but I feel cheated that they did this, when the box says "unedited/uncut". I'll continue supporting the U.S. release and recommending it to others, hoping that FUNimation does not do this again in the future.』

(Awesome!!!!!!!!)
『Season 4 includes episodes that never aired in the USA. I am looking forward to the March release of season 5. This is just a great traditional amine that has mystery's for all ages. This series is 500+ episodes strong and still going in japan and i hope they will continue to release them on DVD in the USA.』
『The criminal mind is a twisted one and Jimmy Kudo knows the shady corridors of humanity like no other detective in the business. He’s put more scum behind bars than just about anyone on the beat and his skills have earned him plenty of enemies, and he pays the price one dark night… Being poisoned and left for dead.

But rather than meeting his end in a shallow grave, Jimmy gets a new beginning. Awakening to find himself transformed, the evil elixir of his faceless foes has changed him into a small boy– The perfect cover! Utilizing his unlikely new persona and cutting edge technology, Jimmy is hot on the trail of his assailants as Conan Edogawa.

The path to justice will be littered with cruelty and madness, the worst of man on display as this sleuth cuts through the underworld in search of answers, solving one sick crime at a time. Truth is not open to interpretation. There’s no room for error when life and limb are on the line. A detective like no other, Conan is on the case!

Season 4 contains episdodes 80-105 on 4 discs.

(Slayers Seasons 1-3 Box Set)
『Im gonna hafta say as of to date i think this is my favaroit anime series of all time. I dont no what i can say that hasnt been said already its funny lots of action and all the chars you will either love or hate. Definatley leaves you wanting alot more. If you like D&D and humor you will love this series. Also i will say this is absolutly the best buy i have every gotten on a anime DVD set 1700+ min 3 seasons for under 50$ and that was includeing the shipping, cant beat that (still dont no why anime so expensive here in the states). Im still suprised at how cheap this series is. Now i will say i liked the 1st 2 seasons better than the 3rd, now the 3rd season was good also but i just felt the 1st 2 were a bit better. Lina and her ragtag band of misfits keep getting into all kinds of trouble that they hafta find ways to get out of, funny thing is alot of time they bring the trouble on themselfs. But all in all a really great series 1 of the best imo. 1 other note i also purchased the QVA's and movies set thats been released and imo they were not near as well done as the TV series' also a differnt person did Lina's voice wich i personaly didnt care for but its still worth geting and wacthing if you like the TV series. If you like humor magic action set in a medevil setting get this ya cant go wrong for the price.』

(For 78-episodes from three seasons of this classic series for a low-price, that's pretty awesome!)
『Slayers"...one of Japan's longest running and still continuing adventure/comedy anime series receives its first major collection with the first three seasons (a total of 78 episodes) released in one major box set. A classic series that is witty, funny and highly entertaining!

I can easily remember watching "The Slayers" when it first appeared on television in Japan, catching the premiere of the series at an anime convention and watching the main Japanese voice actress Megumi Hayashibara promoting the series in America and singing a song from the series. And then the release of the series on VHS and owning multiple copies just to get a subtitled and English dubbed version because I enjoyed the series that much.

It's hard to believe but nearly 14 years later since "The Slayers" debut as a light novel by Hajime Kanzaka and Rui Araizumi (which the duo has since released 50 light novels), the series has received a manga treatment, two OAV series, five movies, countless video games and for anime series, there have been a total of five.

With the series having had its release in the US from Software Sculptors and Central Park Media, the series is now receiving its first major collection with "The Slayers: The First Three Seasons" which consists of Season One: The Slayers (April 1995-Sept. 1995, 26 episodes), Season Two: Slayers Next (April 1996-Sept. 1996, 26 episodes) and Season Three: Slayers Try (April 1997-Sept. 1997, 26 episodes) for a total of 78 episodes included in this collection.

All three series were directed by Takashi Watanabe ("Casshan: Robot Hunter", "Y's II", "New Fist of the North Star", "Ikki Tousen"), screenplay by Takao Koyama ("Dragon Ball Z", "Saint Seiya", "Urusei Yatsura", "Zillion"), character designs by Naomi Miyata ("Kino's Journey", "Revolutionary Girl Utena", "Sakura Wars") and music by Osamu Tezuka ("Shadow Skill", "Popotan", "Lost Universe, "Akazukin Cha Cha").

The series revolves around the character of Lina Inverse, a powerful sorceress who has a love for money and eating a lot of food. Everytime she tries to help a village (for money), somehow, she ends up destroying it and thus, has a reputation of being a destructive and evil sorceress. During each season, she is accompanied by Gourry Gabriev, Zelgadis Greyswords and Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun during her adventures for more money, food and fun.

The main characters of "Slayers" (for each of the three seasons) are:

Lina Inverse - A powerful sorceress who loves money and food. She is very sensitive when she's around other women that are more bustier than her and tends to have a short fuse. Whenever she's in battle, her spells tend to do more damage than she thinks. But because of the sheer amount of destruction that she's caused, the rumors have spread throughout the country and people tend to fear her and make her out as an evil person when she's not.

Gourry Gabriev - The marvelous swordsman who wields the sword of light. He also has a bad memory and is a powerful magic wielder but doesn't remember being one. So, he joins Lina on her adventures as her personal bodyguard.

VIDEO&AUDIO:

It's important to note that Slayers debuted on Japanese television back in 1995, so for those who just started watching anime or are interested in the older series after watching "Slayers Revolution" or "Slayers Evolution-R", there is a big difference in the quality of anime and the overall sharpness and vibrancy of the colors. But as an anime series that came out in 1995, the series was on par of what we were used to seeing from anime series around that time ("Dragon Ball GT", "Blue Seed", "Sailor Moon Super S", etc.) The series is featured in 4:3 and when I was younger and watching this series, I felt that the animation was very good for a television series. I also enjoyed the overall painted background settings of the series.

Of course, comparing this 1995-1997 series with the 2008-2009 series is almost like comparing to apples to oranges but considering the time period this anime series was released, I enjoyed the comedic play of serious to humorous character designs and of course was more cel driven and doesn't utilize the 3D CG that we see in today's "Slayers" anime series. Also, unlike the recent FUNimation Entertainment releases of "Dragon Ball Z" or "Dragon Ball GT" which has received major digital remastering and restoration, this series doesn't and so it does show its age and at times you will see picture quality a bit faded at times.

As for audio, this series retains its Central Park Anime English dub, so for fans of the classic series, Lisa Ortiz and Eric Stuart fans should be happy to know that FUNimation Entertainment retained the original talent. As mentioned earlier, when the VHS first came out, I was purchasing both the Japanese and English VHS versions, because I'm a big fan of Megumi Hayashibara's vocal work and was one of the first series (not from Pioneer) in which I enjoyed both the English and Japanese voice talent at the same time. Both vocal tracks are in Dolby Digital stereo and subtitles are in English only.

I preferred to watch the series with my audio receiver set for "Stereo on All Channels" for a more immersive soundscape.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"The Slayers: The First Three Seasons" contain the textless songs and FUNimation Entertainment trailers for each season on the fourth disc.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"Slayers" will always be an anime series that I will always enjoy. I was heavily into the series back in the 90's and I know there had been this lull of when I didn't catch anything related to the series but just a few related films. But watching this series again, definitely brought back memories of catching the series at an anime con meeting, an anime convention, buying multiple versions to get the subtitled and English dubbed versions. I really enjoyed this series.

But it takes some dedication. Where a long anime series such as "Dragon Ball Z" can have a conclusion, the fact that this series has literally been on television or released in some format for the last 15 years, you really have to be a dedicated fan to following a series this long. In fact, each season is a story arc in itself but for the most part, they are stand-alone episodes and typically the final three or four episodes is where everything tends to lead to a major battle. And despite these episodes being over a decade old, the anime still holds up today. And the fact that you can own all three seasons in a single box set for a great price is also another incentive.

For those who are wondering how the packaging is done for this box set which has 12 DVD's, you get a slipcover but then almost in like a large digibook format, instead of pages you get six plastic sections where two DVD's fit into. Episode titles are on the inside front and rear covers.

Overall, there's nothing bad I can say about this series. You're getting 78 classic episodes and to imagine back then, it took forever for these episodes to come out in the US let alone having to wait for each season to come out on DVD. So, personally, I think it's a great service for anime fans that FUNimation Entertainment has released "The Slayers: The First Three Seasons" on one set and are dedicated to releasing the newer seasons in the US as well.

Fans of "Slayers", this box set is definitely recommended for old school anime fans and those who simply enjoy the "Slayers" series!』

(Box set)
『I currently own the 3 seasons of Slayers as separate box sets, also bought on Amazon.com. I do like them a lot but the actual boxes are kind of thin and a bit flimsy. Also season one has a slip cover while the other 2 do not. You might not find that as annoying as I do, but to each his own. I was slightly interested in owning all the sets as one entity, but because the picture on Amazon.com doesn't really show the condition of the actual box I went to my local Best Buy to check it out. For those interested it is still made of flimsy, thin cardboard. To be honest I would much rather have all 3 seasons separate now, now that I've seen this one. It seems cool at first to have them all there in one box, but from what I could tell there was no separation of the seasons, except for what's printed on the discs themselves. I've also had some experience with box sets like these before, and they tend to fall apart on me, after some time, due to the larger size of them and the thin-ness of the outer casing that's holding all of it. I would suggest getting the sets separately, like I have, unless you really like having everything in one place. It might cost a bit more but I think it's worth it because the smaller, separate sets will have a better chance of lasting longer.
I'd give 5 stars because I think the series rocks, but this particular box set could have been made better, so 4 stars it is.』

(Big Intentions, Big Value)
『Somehow in my weird and wacky anime history, I've unintentionally avoided The Slayers and its storied franchise history entirely. Despite frequent whispers of its lighthearted and enjoyable nature, it always seemed like there was something more pressing or pertinent to force The Slayers to the proverbial backburner. Fortunately Funimation has individuals like me in mind with their latest release of the property: The Slayers - The First Three Seasons collection.

Coming in at a whopping total runtime of 1725 minutes, this box set spans 12 discs packaged in a "book" of clear thin packs housed in an attractive cardboard outer slipcase.

The show wears an appropriate, if not slightly conservative TV PG (13+) rating due to animated and often silly violence over the real rough stuff such as nudity or adult language. Language options include both the original Japanese dialog track or an English dub (each in stereo) and the option of running English subtitles with either.

Special features are non-existent but considering how much actual material is presented within this set, it's quite forgivable. Speaking of the material contained, this collection lives up to its name by including the first three seasons of the show in their entirety. Each season consists of 26 episodes (4 discs apiece) and are labeled as followed: Season One: The Slayers, Season Two: Slayers Next, and Season Three: Slayers Try.

The story, in an intense effort to summarize, goes something like this: The infamous and ultra-powerful sorceress, Lina Inverse encounters the brave (but incompetent) Gourry Gabriev who, due to her lack of pubescent development, mistakes her for a foolish little girl in distress. The unlikely duo end up teaming up in a world riddled with crime and corruption in effort to find a way to make a little loot in the process of cleaning up society.

The show, for anyone yet to experience it, can best be described as a fantasy romp (think magic, dragons, treasure, and bandits) with a strong sense of humor, and a splash of Dragon Ball Z thrown in for good measure. Don't let that last one throw you; it's meant in the best sense of the comparison. Fighting (spell casting) occupies much of the story development and like many shows of the era, works pretty well as a catalyst to move our heroes from town to town. Villains are frequent and come in many forms only unlike most shonen do-gooder themed anime titles out there, part of the fun in The Slayers is to root for the bad guys since technically they're the good guys. Old Lina and Gourry aren't above robbing from a group of bandits in effort to support their insatiable appetite for food (triple servings please), or ridding a village of a pesky black dragon but only if the price for their service is right.

The dynamic between the lead characters is strong enough to warrant the voyage thanks to witty dialog that succeeds in both language options. The ragtag group of rogues (which later expands to include members Zelgadis and Amelia) find their path laced with opportunities to administer their unique brand of justice around every corner.

Pacing is swift and efficient with episodes that neither drag by nor end suddenly or incompletely. The show doesn't follow typical serial format, which means that each episode was written to stand on its own (with references to past events strewn about). Basically it's pretty easy to pick up on the show at any point and follow along without much explaining.

The visuals look a bit faded and choppily animated when compared to the computer-generated imaging of today's anime titles but, and again I have to compare it to DBZ, the show has aged quite well for its vintage (the first season aired back in 1995). There is little in terms of the visuals to differentiate the three seasons from one another save for the opening sequence, which was unique to each. On the whole it appears that the show gradually began to take itself a bit more seriously as time went on. While the first season especially seemed to revel in near-constant stabs at humor (including Lina's penchant for sarcastically talking to herself), the chemistry of the characters as they played off one another definitely became less forced in the later seasons.

Sound work is adequate in all regards with little to get overly excited about. The English dub is only slightly less enthusiastic as the original Japanese vocal work; again a testament to quality that was quite ahead of its time.

While I could spend limitless server space talking about the show itself, the real show stopper comes in the form of the packaging/ presentation value Funimation packed into this collection. This 12-disc set is absolutely gorgeous with its double-disc thin packs linked together and bound in what looks like a spell book taken directly from the show. Within this "book" are the complete episode listings for all three seasons (half of the second and all of the third are only visible by removing the two-dvds and looking through the clear plastic on the last page), written in fancy scroll on intentionally yellowed parchment. This entire book then slides into the outer cardboard sleeve that is pictured and the whole affair takes up a little less room on the shelf than three standard dvd cases.

In conclusion, The Slayers is a fine example of a special time in the history of Japanese animation where everything hadn't been done a hundred times over and writers were free to enjoy the process of story telling by not falling into the trap of taking themselves too seriously. If the show's unique character isn't enough to justify giving it a go during your next anime binge, perhaps the packaging (which is truly top notch) and the sheer entertainment value contained within (we are talking about 29 hours worth of anime here) will be.』

(I am the great and beautiful sorceress...)
『Meet sorceress Lina Inverse -- she's short, flat-chested, brash, loud, eats like a barbarian, ridiculously powerful, and has a temper as hot as her fireballs.

She's also the lovable anti-heroine of "Slayers" The Complete Seasons 1-3 ," a thoroughly hilarious and warped little classic anime that spans three very different storylines. Each of the three seasons blends in plenty of fantasy spoofs and a solid little story about good vs. evil (or justice vs. evil, depending on who you ask), when our heroes aren't dressing in drag or mugging bandit gangs.

After Lina robs a bandit gang, she finds herself being pursued by a mysterious Chimera named Zelgadis and his weird minions, and a revered blind priest named Rezo who wants to protect Lina from Zelgadis... or so he says. Fortunately she has the handsome but dumb swordsman Gourry Gabriev to help her out -- except she seems to have her enemies and her allies mixed up.

And as Lina, Gourry and Zelgadis are pursued by Rezo's monstrous allies, they learn the real reason that Rezo wants the statuette -- yes, it's to unleash ultimate evil upon the world, and all that. But even after the threat seems to be over, the two of them -- plus a justice-happy princess named Amelia -- end up with a bounty on their heads, dodging a crazy mercenary, and a new enemy lurking in the city of Sairagg...

"Slayers Next" reunites the gang somewhat explosively in the city of Xoana, where Zelgadis is seeking a cure for his Chimera body. But the gang's quest for the legendary Claire Bible is disrupted by the crazed Xoana princess Martina, a sorcerous feud that upends an entire city, the hunt for dragon cuisine, a magical tennis game, a tower of magic dolls and weird obstacles, a city that bans men, and a "mysterious priest" named Xellos who seems to have way more power than an average sorcerer should have.

But the real trouble starts when the gang makes it to Amelia's country of Sairune -- and discovers that a conspiracy of greedy royals and evil Monsters want Lina very, very dead. The gang sets out to discover the reason why on a journey riddled with Golden Dragons, malignant Monsters, and the true form of the Claire Bible. But their mysterious enemies have plans for Lina and her ultimate attack spell... which may bring about the end of the world.

"Slayers Try" has Lina and her friends set adrift at sea during a battle with a Golden Dragon... who also happens to be her latest employer, Filia. Eventually Filia reveals why she has done all this -- a prophecy foretelling a terrible disaster that may destroy the world, which only Lina's sister (or, if she's not available, Lina) can stop. Unfortunately the gang also have a new enemy -- the vengeance-maddened Monster Valgaav, and a mysterious shadowy creature who wants Gourry's Sword of Light.

But after some nasty obstacles, Lina discovers the true intent of Valgaav's new master -- to destroy the Dark Lord Darkstar (yeah, silly name), using five weapons including the Sword of Light. When a clash with Valgaav goes horribly wrong, Lina and her friends end up scattered across the continent, with only a short time to stop the insane Dark Lord from invading their world. And finding the last of the weapons to kill Darkstar will take them deep into the bloody past of the Golden Dragons...

Spoofs of the fantasy genre are a dime a dozen. The real challenge is creating a spoof that also has a story and mythology all its own -- and "Slayers" succeeds brilliantly at doing that. Not only are all three seasons gutsplittingly funny, but each one has a really solid storyline and thoroughly enjoyable characters -- including some moments that are beautifully dramatic and tragic too.

Each one has basically two interconnected arcs of epic battles, with plenty of Dark Lords, uberpowered Monster lords, wizard-priests, sword duels, hidden libraries, mystical ruins, devastated cities and the occasional town being ransacked by multicoloured trolls. It's a solid enough fantasy series, and it takes the usual fantasy tropes -- big dumb guy with magic sword, sorceress, Dark Lord, plucky princess -- and promptly turns them on their heads.

And there's a lot of humour too, ranging from a horde of Lina and Gourry clones ("It's... TINY!") to a series of running gags ("That.... is a SECRET"). At least half the episodes contain and/or end with some kind of massive explosion and possible rioting. And a couple stories wedged between the two arcs are entirely devoted to comedy -- usually they involve a more relaxed tone, with stuff about cursed jars, elderly superheroes, Gourry in drag, and the whole gang dressing up in big silly animal costumes.

Lina is a brilliant fantasy anti-heroine -- she's flat-chested, assertive, hypersensitive and wonderfully bombastic, and even her expanding arsenal of highly destructive spells doesn't make her less endearing. Swordsman Gourry is a good complement to Lina, given his childlike attitude and a tiny brain . And hyperactive princess Amelia is kind of annoying at first, but when she starts balancing out her "justice!" obsession with a healthy dose of reality, you start feeling fond of her.

Zelgadis is the best-rounded character of the bunch, since he starts as a semi-villain but soon reveals that his only real goal is to become a human being again. And Xellos is a priceless character -- he flits in and out, causing trouble just for the fun of it, announcing that whatever he's talking about "is a SECRET," and sometimes he even turns against Lina and Co. Despite all that, you end up really, really liking him.

The first three seasons of "Slayers" make up a solid fantasy series that also happens to be a hysterically funny spoof, with brilliantly solid plots and likable characters. Definitely a must-see.』

『Varying the length of the mysteries from one to four episodes in the long-running (more than 500 episodes)Case Closedhelps to keep the series fresh during the fourth season by allowing the filmmakers to introduce more complex plots and multiple characters. But the overall feel is uneven: While many of the adventures are exciting and innovative, others don't pay off satisfactorily. The way the murder was committed in Episode #93 "Deadly Art" baffles even Conan: Who expects a hi-tech weapon at a flower show? When Richard breaks his leg in Episode #94 "Hospital Homicide" Conan has to handle a gang of bankrobbers-turned-kidnappers completely on his own. The oddest adventure of the season is the four-part "Jimmy Kudo Revealed." Rachel finally realizes that Conan has to be Jimmy: He knows more than any 8- year-old possibly could, but he displays the same gaps in his knowledge as Jimmy. A childhood photo confirms her suspicions: Conan looks exactly like Jimmy (except for the glasses, which he doesn't really need). Conan has his back against the wall when he's saved by the convenient appearance of his actress mother and crime novelist father. Although the quarrelsome pair helps solve an Agatha Christie-style mystery, they're weak, unsatisfying characters. At the end of the story, Rachel's suspicions about Conan just disappear--they're not resolved, but they're never mentioned again. The two most intriguing characters from Season #3 make only brief appearances: Harley Hartwell, the teen detective who recognized Jimmy's deductive powers in Conan, and Conan's nemesis, the magician/cat burglar Phantom Thief 1412 a.k.a. the Phantom Thief Kid. (Rated TV PG: violence, violence against women, alcohol and tobacco use)--Charles Solomon

(An awesome slice of life series.)
『This has that nostalgic feel.

It's a simple, yet hilarious, slice of life series. The cast really never expands, and the characters are always in character.

I highly recommend checking out this series, especially if you like slice of lifes.』

(An Anime Everyone should watch)
『Okay,In the begining like everyone else you have doubts about something before you buy if you are making a right decision or not.My Advice for this Anime GO FOR IT.Its Fun to watch from the first to last episode later in the series I began to connect with the character Osaka she just really reminds me of myself.

(Don't like anime? This will change your mind.)
『I never really loved anime, i thought it was just boring and stupid. That was a year ago. Then i discovered Azumanga Daioh. This is what brought me into the anime genre. Everyone in the story is a instant classic charater, from The smart 10 year old Chiyo-chan, to the dull, yet great at riddles Osaka. The show is based off this group of girls from the first year of high school to the last year. This has alot of zany adventures in it, like how to cure hiccups, Summer vacation, and the culture festivals. Everything including the last episode was a great time, i literally cried at the last episode. Yes, Cried. It's a touching, yet funny story and i hope you buy it.』

(Azumanga Diaoh Box Set)
『The series:

The series is great! I've loved it since it first came out. Occasionally it can be a little slow- especially when watching Osaka, but in my opinion, it was worth buying.

The product: ("class album box set")

The only bad thing I can say about it is that there are no special features of any kind. It does have the show and I guess that's what really counts. And I love it's size!』

(And addictive slice of life)
『Azumanga Daioh is an anime based off of a 4 panel comic series. This fun slice of life anime follows the main characters through their high school careers. All the characters are adorable and funny, from Chiyo-chan, the child prodigy who skipped 5 grades and is STILL smarter than all the students in her class; Ayumu (called Osaka), the absent-minded girl who always daydreams in the middle of class (named Osaka for her hometown); Tomo and Yomi, a pair of friends who've known each other since grade school (though why they're STILL friends is a mystery to all); to Sakaki, the tall, busty, athletic, quiet girl who has a deep love for cats (how the cats feel, though...).

The teachers are quirky, too. From the girl's homeroom teacher (Yukari) who is a total wreck (you have to see for yourself) to their history teacher (Kimura-sensei) who has an unhealthy love for teenage girls.

It's a great series and one to be watched over and over. There's no overarcing storyline, and that's the genius of it. It's just good plain wholesome (barring Kimura sensei) fun. Worth every penny.』

『Boys and girls, yound and old, otaku and casual fans alike-everyone loves Azumanga Daioh. It's one of the most beloved anime series of 2004, and now ADV has brought all six DVDs together in a single affordable Thinkpak Collection!』
『LikeSeinfieldor the juvenile novels of the '50s, the popularshojo(girl's) seriesAzumanga Daioh(2002) isn't really about anything. Based on the manga by Kiyohiko Azuma, the broadcast series follows a mismatched group of seven girls through their three years at an ordinary Tokyo high school. Chiyo is a cute prodigy who skipped five grades; Sakaki seems oblivious to everything except stray cats, which always bite her. Kaorin appears to be fixated on Sakaki; although she worries about her weight, Yomi is the most normal member of the cast. Osaka acts spaced-out,Tomo declares she's a "loose cannon," and Kagura is an outstanding athlete: this trio proclaims themselves "The Knuckleheads" when they face major exams. Hard-drinking, potty-mouthed English teacher Yukari resents the popularity of saner coach Nyamo, even though they're friends and former classmates; Kimura, who teaches because he likes to ogle teenage girls, is the only major male character.

Azumanga Daiohpresents no sustained story arc or character development: each episode is a collection of more or less random incidents involving the girls and the three faculty members. The stories focus on everyday activities: classes, exams, festivals, field trips, athletic events. The characters don't pilotmechaor battle demons or lose their clothes or face major emotional crises. The normalcy of the girls' lives is the main source of the series' appeal. (A Real Piece of Art)
『Well, initially, when my friend got on me about watching this series, and I heard what it was about, I was a little skeptical about trying it out. I did the research on the series, and found out that it was adapted from a Japanese adult (hentai) video game on the computer. I wanted to start out this review by saying that there is very minimal adult material in this series. There's a bunch of fan service, but close to no nudity.
In Shuffle! the main character, Rin Tsuchimi is put in a situation (which you'll see as the series develops) where he must decide upon the girl he really loves. You'll meet some real over-the-top characters as it starts up.
They did a really good job with drawing the characters and environment; I was actually quite surprised. The theme song is rather catchy, in my opinion (coming from a person who normally detests that type of music). The dialog really isn't all that bad; there's a few corny jokes by today's standards, but I think it actually complements the series nicely. The actual story of it, without spoiling anything, was overall moving. There were a couple moments where I feel that it was a little too dramatic when I look at the series overall, but it was well done nonetheless.
All in all, I can't say there's too much wrong with this series at all, and it's definitely in my favorite pile. If you're a fan of cute girls, comedy, and school time drama, I'd recommend this to you.』

(Shuffled between worlds)
『Harem anime at its finest. "Shuffle" is a romantic comedy with elements of tragedy woven in. Basically it's an animated soap opera. Yet it has a charm that would appeal to many anime fans.
It starts as "Rin" who was orphaned at an early age, now in high school
learns that two new students (both girls) will be transferring into his class. "Lisianthus" (Sia) and "Nerine" come from different worlds and are princesses (Sia is the daughter of the King of the Gods and Nerine the daughter of the King of Demons). Both girls met Rin years before and fell in love with the kind hearted boy. *Note-that the way the Gods and Demons are drawn, they more resemble elves-as both races possess long pointed ears. There is a friendship between the girls and their fathers yet there is a rivalry as well. Mostly to convince Rin which girl is better as a potential mate.

To complicate things further, there is Kaede, Rin's childhood friend and housemate. Asa, another female friend since middle school. Primula who appears in the second episode. And Asa's friend Kareha, who frequently has daydream spells mainly over romantic situations.

There are bouts of bizarre comic relief from the crazed groupies each of the girls has though not wanted. And the groupies appear far to old to attend high school yet they do. There are more main characters that add fun elements to the story.

As mentioned earlier, there are elements of tragedy, long hidden secrets
and bitter jealousy within this story. Also, as to the girls Nerine and Sia-Nerine is quite skilled at using magic where Sia is frequently hitting others with chairs.

Check out "HULU/Funimation" and watch an episode or two of Shuffle then decide.

I personally enjoyed the story, but everyone has different tastes.

(Shuffle off to get this series.)
『Shuffle is a fairly standard harem comedy that is not ground breaking, yet is rather entertaining nontheless. It has decent characters and a rather good plotline.』

(A 'how NOT to do' guide on making a romance/harem)
『Speaking as a fan of the harem genre, I went into this show expecting nothing more than fun and entertaining antics with fanservice sprinkles. Unfortunately, upon finishing the first disc, I was filled with... well, nothing. The characters were cut-outs of the usual archetypes, and the comedy ranged from slightly amusing to lame and even to downright annoying. First, we have the token gals; Kaede the 60s housewife who lives to pamper Rin, Asa the energetic childhood friend, Sia the spunky fashionable girl, Primula the kid character, and Nerine the "too shy" girl who can sing well. All of these characters fail to impress or even in being anything distinguishable from the rest. It's comedic tropes depend largely on idiotic fanboys pestering the girls and hating Rin for being their center of attention. This just makes for situations that are beyond predictable and unfunny. Maybe if watching dense idiots do dense and idiotic things gets your funny bone, then you'll find it to be okay.
Another detriment to the first half of this series is the writing in the dialogue. With lines like "Is it okay if I fall even more in love with you?" and "I'll have lots of babies for you, Rin!" you may find yourself rolling your eyes and reaching for the stop button. And no, these are not the worst lines I could find, there are plenty more of the like, these are just the first two that came to mind. There are also many lack-luster and downright gut-churning confessions along way shrouded in scenarios such as 'girl trips and falls on guy' and 'young girl needs a bra, lets take Rin along for bra shopping' that are sure to get your gag reflex going, or just bore the hell out of you, whichever one comes first. Ultimately, the first half of the series is little more than the usual harem antics, just a lot more boring.
Its not until the second half of this series when things start to get interesting. Yes, if you could stomach your way through the first half, then strap yourself in, turn off the lights, and prepare yourself for one of the most unintentionally hilarious melodramatic farces you will ever see! The series takes a 180 and immediately turns a once pointless character into a plot-device (and then back to pointless), adds 'ghosts from the past' to another, and gives psychiatric problems to others. These twists come out of nowhere, and there are multiple times when the characters spend a majority of an episode sitting around blaming themselves for other peoples' problems. One character gets handed a murderous psychosis right out of left field. I guess the makers saw When They Cry and tried to mimick it last second, because this psychosis has no justifiable explanation and in the end, it just goes away, poof. This segment also features a laser-guided exacto-knife. Yes, watch this far and you can see how a simple exacto-knife can transcend the laws of physics.
The one redeeming quality to this farce is that a winner is indeed chosen; unfortunately, this leads into yet another off the wall life-or-death plot twist that plays through with the most nonsensical explanations, reasons, and resolutions. Yes indeed, what started as a lame excuse for a romantic comedy turned into a hilarious melodramatic farce that is sure to have you in tears of laughter. In fact, the characterization and plot are so weak in the first half that you can probably watch the first 2 episodes and then spare yourself the gag-inducing 3-10 episodes and just skip ahead to episode 11 (I believe is when it 'tries to be serious') and not miss much of anything. If you're up for it, I guarantee you will be entertained by how terrible the drama is done in this show, a 'How NOT to do' guide for making a romantic comedy/harem.』

(An Entertaining And Romantic Harem Series Worth Checking Out)
『I saw a few episodes on the website HULU and instantly knew that this series was a must have, and now seeing the series through I have no regrets of having bought this incredible series. The series for the most part is a romantic comedy with some dramatic parts as well a little similar to the series Chobits and Ah My Goddess series. The series does have a little nudity not full just some topless shots but if you feel that's offensive or don't want the chance of any younger kids seeing those scenes just quickly skip over those parts because all in all the series is still a good show for people to watch. Like a lot of anime shows of this nature you have one male character(Rin) who seems to attract a group of beautiful girls who want to be his one true love and he must choose who really has his heart, and it's sometimes very funny as you watch these girls compete against each other for Rin's heart. The series video is in wide-screen format with the usual 5.1 English audio or 2.0 English/Japanese audio, the video quality is clear and sharp like most anime series that have come out these last ten years and the voice cast for both the Japanese and English cast were incredible for their character roles. Though the extras aren't much just the usual trailers and textless intro/ending songs and that's about it, the only complaint again is the way Funimation put the box set which if you've been buying the last few like the Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE or Mushi-Shi box sets is that the series comes in four dvds which are placed in two thin pack dvd cases which hold two dvds each and placed in a thin paper sleeve with some of the female shuffle cast on the front. So the question is is this series worth getting at this price and for myself I say yes, though if you like more of the mecha fighting series and don't care for much else than you might want to pass this over otherwise a great series awaits you...』
『Ten years ago, the gateway to the Realm of the Gods and the Realm of the Demons was opened. Soon afterwards, the gods and the demons began migrating to our world. Now there are places where gods, demons and humans all study together… Such as our school, Verbena Academy.

Meet Rin, a normal high school guy who is the envy of every other man in town. You see, he’s lucky enough to live with and be pampered by the sweet, beautiful Kaede. It’s just a day like any other when two new transfer students show up in class: Sia, Princess of the Gods and Nerine, Princess of the Demons. Now Rin’s luck is about to change, for he has been chosen to take one of their hands in marriage! Talk about envy! Whether down the hall, next door or from another realm, girls seem to be everywhere… And they all want Rin for themselves! Which girl would you choose?

(Beautiful Trainwreck)
『My-HiME fits the description of 'beautiful trainwreck' better than any other anime I've watched. It starts out as a high school slice-of-life series, with a lot of ecchi humour, even the 'monster of the week' battles providing far more in the way of amusement (a panty/bra stealing creature, for example) than danger. Then, in the last twelve episodes or so, the drama side gets going, which results in it turning into a less gruesome version of Battle Royale, with robots added on top. The two differing sections of the story do end up blending well together - the first part providing time for viewers to become attached to the characters - but it was certainly strange to see a light-hearted anime take such a dark turn...

If nothing else, you have to praise the visual and audio aspects of the series. It has lovely art and very good animation, the character designs (the faces, short skirts, big breasts and super model female cast) and bright colours unsurprisingly reminding me of Code Geass. The soundtrack is mostly stellar, too, with the music Goddess known as Yuki Kajiura pulling out one of her overall weaker (compared to her best work) but by no means poor collections of music. Even the English voice acting impressed me, Mai's voice fitting her fiery yet loveable and cute personality like a glove... However, where My-HiME falls short, and what makes me class it as a trainwreck, is its story.

Put simply, the story is about a group of twelve girls and their loved ones. Each of the twelve girls (referred to as 'HiME') has a different power, some being elemental and others being the ability to use weapons, and each can summon a mecha/monster (referred to as a 'Child' if it obeys a human and an 'Orphan' if it doesn't) to fight with them. Mai, the female lead, moves to the prestigious Fuka Academy (which accommodates elementary-high school ages, and has dormitories for both genders), along with her younger brother at the start, and there she meets and interacts with the other girls with powers and her new classmates.

Sadly, there isn't much actual plot covered in the 26 episodes. The first half focuses heavily on characterization, fan service and comical goings on. The second half focuses on characterization and battles, each battle resulting in a new death. In between all of this, not a lot beyond the basic premise of the story gets a look in. This resulted in very little of the plot making sense, and the final episode was a failure (partly) because of this.

Why were the 'Child' and 'Orphan' creatures in existence? How could they be summoned by certain people? What was the character reminiscent of Kaoru from Evangelion (Naji)? Why did the HiME ritual occur every 300 years?

None of the above questions, or numerous others I have, receive answers within the series. When the final episode rolled around and the world was saved from destruction in predictable fashion, I was left with a blank expression on my face, reflecting on the many questions without answers and with disappointment in the place of the answers I desired.

Apart from its production values, what saved My-HiME, for me at least, was the quality of its characterization. Over the course of the series, you learn all about Mai. Her relationship with her brother is explored and plays a major role, and as a result of an involving love quadruple I came to care about her as a person, as well as her likeable main love interest. And, though the other cast members didn't get anywhere near as much time because of the amount of them - the number reminding me of Negima's never-ending character list to begin with - enough of the personalities and back-stories of those that mattered got covered for me to become emotionally involved with many of them. The characters laughed and cried, and I was able to feel their emotions; never feeling disconnected.

But, switching back to the story, the final episode almost ruined the good that came before. If you're the sort of person that cringes when you see deus ex machina twists, your face won't be a pretty sight after finishing the anime because it's practically non-stop deus ex machina in the last episode. Without wanting to spoil too much, what happened at the end of My-HiME is equivalent to every emotional, heart-wrenching moment of a story being made worthless, destroying any attachment one has to the many moving scenes included. Even though I enjoyed what came before immensely, I felt like time slowed down at the end - it was a sad way to end such an absorbing title.

To sum it up, Sunrise know how to please anime fans; men/otaku in particular. They keep the skirts high, the chests large, the comedy amusing and are masters at pulling away at the heart strings of viewers with dramatic action, or just plain old fashioned drama. They know how to make up for what would normally by anime ruining flaws. If not for the poor excuse of a story and even worse attempt at an ending, if only for enjoyment alone, I'd be rating it higher, but it wasn't to be. Instead, I'll give it a solid 8/10, thinking of it as something of a guilty pleasure.』

(Comedy Drama)
『This Anime is a half and half. You start out getting to know the characters and funny outcomes they endure until the story reaches it's zenith and begins to show who's on who side for the second half of the series. The Story is well rounded and has a lot to offer, but it's not all about slapstick humor, there is really a touching side to it too.』

(vs Rozen Maiden)
『Girls with miracle power forced to fight their destiny; this reminds me of Rozen Maiden(original+traumend), a far more creative show in several aspects. Being original doesn't always mean attracting more people, though.

It starts out ok and gets boring at the middle. It is easy-going amime, and relies on so many cliches you can find everywhere in amime world, especially in charactor settings; a cool hunk, a calm beauty, and a cute little girl in important posts in high school(surprise?), brother/sister complex stereotypes, a girl
almost fell into the wrong guy, etc..and I am PERSONALLY sick of finding a mysterious charactor watching every event from the rooftop.

But my patience finally paid off when I watched final 10 episodes. It gets more serious and enjoyable. There are good twists in both storyline and character developments.

Artwork here is not so special.

Someone mentioned that mechas are differnt from ordinary robot amimes, but don't expect something unique as Tachikoma(Ghost in the shell s.a.c). They are mixture of Japanese monsters and "Ranger Series" type of mecha, and one of monsters' heads is designed after Evangelion (not TV series, and seemingly not avarable in U.S. At least not in the box set) I would say, almost shamelessly. The creator probably tried to show some respect to Eva...I hope.

I found human characters were more interesting, despite of all the cliche.
Kuga is stylish, and Mai, the main charactor is somewhat realistic both in appearance and personality so I feel like she is much sexier than "out-of-nowhere" amime boobs.
She was one of the reasons I kept watching.

Music is nice (not to mention garbage songs), but failed to create its own world. It can go anywhere other than My-HiME. Some out of place, working better towards the end.

I also have a minor complaint about how to show emotions in each character. For instance, there is a moment one of the characters tells something shocking to Mai. You probably want to see Mai's face right at the moment the words were spoken, but instead, amime waits for the person to finish the line, then shows change in Mai's face, timing too late.

In some ways, this amime is similar to Shana; Monster hunting accompanied by another moster, not much deep thougts behind, (at least in its first half), not so great at emotional expressions, music out of place (Shana has better music, though) and you need to wait quite a while to get hooked.

If you like amime in genaral, however, you would probably like it, just like I did. A safer choice than Shana. I found love triangle was more interesting in Shana though.

And if you really want to enjoy the show,
you should probably forget about everything I said.

This is not going to be a waste for a amime fan.

Just in case, if you are looking for something little more thoughtful, I recommend Rozen Maiden, or watch both to compare.』

Himemeans "princess" in Japanese, but in the broadcast seriesMy-Hime(2004), it's also an acronym forHighly-advancedMaterializingEquipment--or certain girls who possess supernatural abilities. Mai Tokiha and her brother Takumi discover their new school, Fuka Academy, has become the focus of the battle against the Orphans: malevolent monsters who can only be defeated by the HiME. Each HiME has a "Child," a sort of half-mechacreature that fights with her against the bizarre Orphans. Mai discovers she's a powerful HiME, just in time to enter the no-holds- barred struggle against the agents of the sinister, all-powerful Searrs Foundation, who've secretely been summoning the Orphans. That storyline comes to a premature end in Episode #15 and another, related but even more confusing plot begins.My-Himefeatures a large cast; some of the members are sympathetic and even endearing, but the muddled story requires so much exposition, the audience doesn't get a chance to know them. An even bigger problem is that the filmmakers can't decide if they're making a magical girl vs. monster adventure, ashojo(girls') high school romance, or a fan-service farce. The battles against the grotesque Orphans are violent and loaded with CG special effects, but they're juxtaposed with cheesecake illustrations, discussions about bras, and nosebleed jokes. Panty shots and close-ups of cleavage follow tearful romantic declarations. Viewers can't tell if they're supposed to cheer, snicker, or sniffle. (BUY IT - YOU'LL LOVE IT)
『If you love excellent animation and thoughtful thought-provoking stories, this is a remarkable series that adults and children will find entertaining and touching. For a robot with such tremendous strength and power Astro Boy has a very human-like tenderness to his character, and a startling level of gentleness to his perception of the people around him, risking his own destruction time and again without hesitation to help others who are dire need. Astro Boy wants.., like so many people do..., to fit in and be accepted as a peer, as a friend, as a trusted persona in his community. But, as a robot, he encounters prejudice, mistrust, and even contempt from people who find it hard to accept a being so differently constructed than themselves. But Astro Boy faces this with a persistent good natured intent to prove himself as an ally to all people. There is no moral equivocation in this series. Astro Boy is always on the side of doing right, defending the innocent against the evil. Though we see some of the beginnings of Astro Boy and his creation, and how he came to be under the care of the professor, there are mysteries that slowly come to light about his construction and where his genesis took place. And on top of all that, there's even a very catchy theme song for the series. This is well worth the investment. The DVD's functioned perfectly and come in well designed protective sleeves in the box. The video visuals were very clear and coloful and the sound is excellent. I highly recommend this series. Also, if you are confused by all the different various "Astro Boy" dvd's and sets that are available for sale out there, stick with this one. I have seen all the Astro Boy titles that are available and this "Astro Boy Collection Box Set" is the best of them all.

- Mike S.』

(to reduce some confusion)
『to reduce confusion of Astro Boy DVD series, please note that there have been 3 series so far: the Black and White 1963 series, the 1980 First Color version, and the 2003 Color version with different stories.

The black and white 1963 version has 193 episodes.

The 1980 version has 52 episodes for the Japanese version, with the first and second episodes merged and cut into 1 episode as the US version. The birth of the character Atlas is removed in the US version. As a result, the US version only has 51 episodes.

The 2003 version has 50 episodes. This version once again has one more episode in the Japanese version. The US version has 1 episode less, which is replaced by a "clip show episode". (probably meaning frame by frame). Personally, I think the 1980 version is slightly cuter than the 2003 version. The 2003 version is more lavish.

More information can be found on Wikipedia: use the keyword Astro Boy, and then try Astro Boy 1980 and Astro Boy 2003

Now, this "red box" edition is the 1980 series. When you think about it, for 30 something dollars, and you get 51 episodes, which is like 60 cents per episode, it is really a very good deal.』

(If you like Kimba)
『I bought Kimba for my kids, since I wanted cartoons that taught values and I didn't want the vacant all flashes and lights cartoons. I also wanted short 20 minute cartoons so that they wouldn't see too much TV a one time. They saw all 52 episodes multiple times, what a bargain.
When I needed more material, I checked out material from Osamu Tezuka the creator of Kimba and found Astro boy box set Astro Boy Collection Box Set (1980) . This is the collection to buy there's another (black cover 2003 edition) that has converted Astro Boy in an all Flashes, music cartoon.
I believe that Astro boy for young kids is absolutely wonderful. It contain a great story line, great quality (colour version), and it delivers a message! The music is catchy.

If you like Kimba, buy this collection for your kids, and for you, if you one of those parents that convert seeing TV in a family activity.

Box that I recommend and that I purchased:

(He's soaring high in the skies!)
『Tezuka was quite the genius.
First, the 1963 Astro Boy cartoon (along with the comics from the 50's and 60's), then this version which appeared in the early 80's, then the 2003 edition (although Tezuka has already passed by this point).
If you are an Astro fan, then you'll appreciate this set. However, the acting is dull and lifeless, and the action is a bit off. However, this set is a must have for Astro fans.

If you get this, be sure to get the 60's and 2003 edition!

(80's Astroboy)
『Ok, I got it for my kid but it's really for me. I just wanted to see the black and white show from my childhood in the 60's and I did. But my kid likes the newer one better and it's as trippy as ever. Now if only Tobor the 8 Man would be released on DVD...』
『Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 11/22/2005』
『Although Osamu Tezuka'sComplete Mangaruns to 300 volumes and his filmography as a writer, producer, and/or director includes more than 70 shorts, features, and TV series,Astro Boy--including this 1980 remake--remains his iconic creation. Tezuka wrote many of the scripts for the second version, and he and Noboru Ishiguro are listed as co-directors. Created by Dr. Boynton to replace his dead son, Astro is a 100,000-horsepower super-robot with jets in his legs, lasers in his fingers, and a gun in his derrière. His round head and goo-goo eyes reflect Tezuka's affection for the old Fleischers cartoons. Astro overcomes criminals, people who use robots for evil purposes or who harbor anti-robot prejudice, and Atlas, a robot who wants to rule the world. In these struggles, Astro never loses his temper, holds a grudge, or feels temptation. Tezuka wanted him to embody the virtues of selflessness and compassion, but his naive, unflagging goodness makes him a rather dull character.

The color version ofAstro Boyis better animated than the 1963 original, which relied heavily on cycles and reused footage. But the stolid timing robs the action scenes of the punch they should pack. The English dub is equally flat, with little inflection or acting to communicate the characters' emotions. The faded prints have been restored to their original colors. Characters are called by their English names in the dialogue but by their Japanese names in subtitles (e.g., Dr. Boynton becomes Dr. Tenma). Among the extras are several deleted scenes, including one of Tezuka introducing "Astro's First Love." Tezuka devotees and fans who grew up watching the color version on TV will want this set, but the original, black-and-white series remains the definitiveAstro Boy. (Mecha Anime for Mystics)
『Visions of Escaflowne is my favorite anime (along with Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rurouni Kenshin). Although Escaflowne features mechas, it's quite different from your Super Robot and Real Robot shows. If anything, Escaflowne is a blending of different genres including action, adventure, romance and fantasy, all in equal measure... And that's probably Escaflowne's strong point. It's one of the most well-balanced anime titles out there. You'll be hard-pressed to find another anime that blends so many different genres together.

The atmosphere in Escaflowne is also incredible. The series has a deep mystical atmosphere that completely absorbs your attention. If you're a person who loves exploring mystical and exotic things, the atmosphere in Escaflowne will blow you away. It's by far the most atmosphere mecha anime i've seen. The soundtrack (done by the same person who did Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack) is one of my favorite soundtracks in an anime. My favorite track is the one that Folken whistles when he meets with Van ("The Cradle Song"). You should definitely check this track out on youtube to get a sense of the Escaflowne's amazing soundscape. It's one of the very few anime series that i've seen with lots of heart. Escaflowne is simply beautiful.

So if you're looking for a mecha series filled with tons of adventure and fantasy, you can't do better than Escaflowne. Not since Xenogears (an anime-ish mecha RPG) have i encountered a mecha story filled with so much adventure.』

(great series)
『I just finished up escaflowne and it lived up to the praise that i had heard』

(One of the Animes You'll Never Forget)
『I remember watching this anime almost five years ago. It was actually the second anime I had ever watched. Since that time, I have watched many more anime, and believe me when I say you won't be forgetting this one anytime soon. For all those years that I didn't own this anime, I'd remember it and think on it; for it has many interesting points to think about.
This anime would be for any age. It has the action, romance, and poetry for the younger kids, and the subtle messages and all of the above for the elder.
The packaging that the anime comes in isn't the best out there, but it is quite durable if your careful with it. Hopefully you are. ^o^
Oh yeah, I would recommend that you watch this anime in the original Japanese with the English subtitles. The English voices, I think, don't have enough emotion in them to do the anime justice.』

(Highly over-rated)
『A friend of mine lent me his store-bought copy of Escaflowne on VHS tape, and I sat down and watched it. I thought it was a typical anime, but nothing outstanding.

A year passed and then I found the reviews here on Amazon about how this is "the perfect television show" and how it deals with complicated political issues, and so on. So I sat down and watched the whole show a second time, thinking maybe I had missed something.

Well I'm still unimpressed. It isn't a bad show, which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1, but it isn't a great show either. In fact it seems rather juvenile and simplistic in the way it deals with problems - something akin to a CW teen soap opera but with Japanese style. In any case, twice viewed is enough for me. I won't be watching Escaflowne again.

In my humble opinion if you're looking for depth (in terms of politics, religion, and interpersonal disputes), then you should look elsewhere like Star Trek DS9 or Babylon 5. Or if you prefer animation then try Macross.

(Fantasy, steampunk, and mecha...)
『Escaflowne Complete Collection is an eight-disc DVD set that contains all twenty-six episodes of The Vision of Escaflowne. The first two discs each contain four episodes and bonus features. The remaining six discs each contain three episodes and bonus features.

The bonus feature on the first disc is four music videos for The Vision of Escaflowne (a textless version of the opening theme, "Friend," "Blue Eyes," and "Into the Light"). This feature runs for about thirteen minutes. On discs two through seven, the bonus feature is "Club Escaflowne." These are interviews with voice actors, production staff, and the writer and director for The Vision of Escaflowne. These interviews run anywhere in length from eight to twenty minutes.

The final disc in the set contains three bonus features. The first is labeled as "Playstation Game Footage." This runs for about eight minutes, and is comprised of what appears to be "cut scenes" from the Escaflowne video game. The next feature is a roughly two-and-a-half minute trailer for Escaflowne: The Movie. The final feature on the disc is a five-minute concert video for Maaya Sakamoto performing at a special concert at a screening for Escaflowne: The Movie.

While I understand that this box set just gathers up the eight individually released discs into one collection, I wish more effort had been taken to put this set together. It would have worked better if they had tried to get more episodes onto each disc, and then focused the bonus features on one or two discs. In the long run, the set probably would have had fewer discs in it if they had done this. But even with the flaws this set has, I would still recommend it for anyone who is a fan of The Vision of Escaflowne.』

『Hitomi Kanzaki is a typical high school girl, with typical high school problems. But when a vision of a young man battling a dragon becomes a reality, her life changes forever. Drawn into a strange vortex with the swordsman, Van, Hitomi is thrust into the strange world of Gaea. Entangled in a struggle over life and death, Van must learn to master the suit of armor, Escaflowne. Chased by the Empire of Azibach, Van and Hitomi will encounter both allies and enemies in an effort to unlock the secrets within Escaflowne. Hitomi's heart is stirred by love and adventure, but at times aches with sorrow. The entire 26 episode epic series in one package. Genre: Action/Romance/Fantasy』
『Although it didn’t fare well on Fox Kids,Escaflowne has a large, loyal following, perhaps because this sprawling fantasy offers the ingredients of classicmecha, sword-and-sorcery and magical girl adventures. After psychic teen-ager Hitomi has a vision of a man battling a dragon, Prince Van of Fanelia and a dragon materialize. He slays the monster and transports Hitomi to the mysterious world of Gaea. An odd mixture of advanced technology and medieval culture, Gaea has links to ancient Atlantis. A typical romantic triangle develops, involving Hitomi, diamond-in-the-rough Van and ideal knight Allen Schezar. The saga attains a Byzantine complexity when the trio is captured by Zaibach Emperor Dornkirk--who is actually Sir Isaac Newton. He's at work on a machine that will enable him to create alternate destinies for Gaea. At times, the story by Hajime Yatate and Shoji Kawamori seems to be careening out of control, as Hitomi whines and the supporting characters appear, disappear and undergo radical personality changes. The most serious flaw is the failure of any of the heroes to defeat the evil Dornkirk, who has dispatched murderous doppelgangers, conducted sadistic experiments on kidnapped children and attempted to subjugate an entire planet. But the combination ofteen-age romance, fantastic robot-suits ("guymelefs"), elaborate battles, hystroinic villains and a world-threatening challenge has madeEscaflownea favorite amongotaku. The feature, released theatrically in the US in 2002, repeated much of the story. Rated 13 and up for animated violence.--Charles Solomon

(Can you handle the Truth?)
『The reason behind my review on Shigurui is to concisely convey the truth behind this series, since the other reviews misled me to believing I would really enjoy it.

The cinematography and animation is truly the best part. The color and angles are spectacular. The flashbacks, the background nature shots, the characters facial expressions. This animation mix stirs up emotions without words superbly. Also the music compliments the animation very well. Much of it is slow, suspenseful, and well placed. If these two elements are what you enjoy most about anime, you will enjoy the series.

The overall experience was beaten, shot, and then run over repeatedly by the very dark, sullen, gross, depressing, hard to follow, and boring story. Read other lengthier reviews for details. Even with only 12 episodes, I still found it took myself over 3 months to finally get through them. I simply found better, more uplifting uses of my time. Also, there was redundant gore and very little action... a terrible combination. No big, elaborate fight scenes, just a slice of light or a sword flash here and a limb breaking or a head slipping off there. I gave this series a very generous 4/10 for the animation and music alone, but it won't be enough for me to ever watch Shigurui again.

Even after all my bashing you're still interested, at least take the time to watch a few episodes on narutowire or any other free online anime service first to see what you think. Even if you like what you see, try not to spend more than [...] 20 bucks for this series. You'll thank me.』

(a master piece)
『A great anime show, that is to some extend scary !. Never before i've seen a samurai show that leans toward horror theme. Great attention to story and characters development and visual arts.

The bad news is the anime demonstrates only the first few chapters of the novel of which its based on.

Very sad indeed . . .』

(Shigurui Death Frenzy)
『Great series, very unique. My only complaint with it is that the series ends right in the middle of the story line. There is no resolution of the conflict between the 2 main characters.Shigurui: Death Frenzy Complete Box Set』

(Poetic Nihilism.)
『To be honest, I almost abandoned Shigurui somewhere around the first 2 or 3 episodes. The virtues of this series are at first masked behind opaque layers of extremely graphic violence, sex and nudity. Not that I have a problem watching violence, sex and nudity. But too often are the three used as stand-ins for a missing story. But that is not the case for Shigurui. Our story here begins with a tournament between two samurai with severe disabilities that they were clearly not born with. Instead, these handicaps were brought upon them by an event (or events) in their lives prior to their stand off. From here, the story circles back to the beginning, following the breadcrumbs that lead to said tournament. It is here that we learn that these two men, Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen were competing successors to their master's dojo. Fujiki, who was initially the obvious choice to follow in his master's footsteps, is suddenly eclipsed by Seigen. However, sex, betrayal and Fujiki's need for redemption and revenge re-tips the scales of the story. That is when things turn really nasty.

Just how nasty they get, will be for you to discover.

Seeing the hideous deformities of the two men at the beginning foreshadows the volume of carnage that you can expect to witness in Shigurui. Do not underestimate the visceral impact of this violence because the series is animated. The explicit detail of a man's entrails rivals what you'd see in a live action version. The good news for those with a weak stomach is that, thanks to minimal animation, you typically will only see the before and after of some disturbing slicing and dicing. The bad news is that the fast cuts between a raised sword and a hashed body amplifies the tension, and the long takes of a sliced off limb gives the imagination plenty of time to either recoil or recover from the aftermath. You'll be given generous time to meditate on the upper portion of a person's face. To aid in your meditation is an atmospheric soundtrack that makes the image either terribly putrescent or strangely poetic. Or both.

This dichotomy alone might be the brilliance of Shigurui. By walking the line of gratuity and minimalism you certainly get a feeling of art and not pornography. Even the explicit nudity and sex is so disturbing that it neutralizes any inherent erotica. You also get a clean break (or slice) from the usual good versus evil thing. Shigurui offers us no protagonists or antagonists. There's only an ensemble of characters who stand on the same nihilistic stage and under a morally ambivalent spotlight that casts no judgment on any action or ambition - no matter how foul. All men are truly created equal in this series: equally troubled. Equally troubling. And equally twisted.』

(somewhat hard to follow)
『this anime is all over the place it doesent have any clear cut main charater. the animation is good maybe even great. the sword play and violence is the most entertaining thing in the series. alot of people are raveing about the story telling but in my opinion that was the largest flaw there was no good flow from episode to episode. its a very serious anime with no comic relief it was very dark not saying there is anything wrong with that theme but it made a boring story even more boring. I put this one right up there with ergo proxy in weirdness. i recomend this to anyone who wants to see a guys head get sliced in half and his brain spill out of his skull but i warn you take it for what it is no engaging charaters to draw you into an engaging story line. each episode left me wanting more of an explination. i watched the series once and probly wont watch agin i would rather watch ninja scroll for the 100th time or elfin lead for blood and a great story or even samuri x for the engaging main charater that this anime lacked』
『Based upon the historical short storySuruga-jou Gozen Jiaifrom one of Japan’s most prolific authors, Nanjo Norio.

Two damaged warriors wear the scars of a twisted and violent past. Bitter rivals for the secrets of their master’s sword and the right to his daughter, these samurai inflict wounds on each other that would destroy lesser men. The final chapter of their saga unfolds within a brutal samurai tournament, a gruesome contest arranged to satisfy the bloodlust of a cruel tyrant overlord. The disfigured legends of the blade must summon the strength for one last battle – a final lesson in the artistry of violence where nothing is more beautiful than the kill.

    (Time to Hunt)
『Great box set! A big improvement over the first box set. Of course you will need the first box set to watch this. Highly recommended if you enjoyed Yu Yu Hakusho!』

    (Final phases)
『It turns out the Hunter Exam just becomes more brutal as time goes on. And "Hunter X Hunter, Vol. 2" sees our heroes to the end of the exam, but they have some chilling and sometimes shocking obstacles in their way before they can get their licenses. And while there are some dull spots (a whole episode of Gon angsting?) the whole anime-only battleship arc fleshes out the test and characters nicely.

First, the gang has to finish Trick Tower -- Leorio's match is a dismal failure, and Killua's sets him against a mass murderer of nightmarish skill. And at the end of the path, the five potential Hunters are forced to decide whether to fight each other to determine who will continue.

Then the passing applicants are taken to a vast battleship-turned hotel, where they are forced to dive for treasure to pay their way. But when the hoteliers vanish during the night, the group must figure out a way to get to the next phase of the exam, with only wrecked ships as their transportation. Unfortunately, something deadly is brewing in the island's bay, and the only way to survive is to work together to somehow free the grounded battleship.

The next phase isn't much fun either -- a week on Zevil Island, where the applicants must hunt each other for their numbered badges. Unfortunately Gon has drawn Hisoka, but the psycho-clown isn't the only problem for the gang. And in the final phase of the exam, the applicants are put into a series of one-on-one fights -- but one of the combatants has a shocking message for Killua.

"Hunter X Hunter Volume 2" basically has the complete second half of the Hunter Exam, and it's a bit grimmer and more dangerous than the phases that have gone before. In the meantime, there's a bit more exploration of the supporting characters (such as chatterbox ninja Hanzo, who spends a whole episode in his underwear), and an entire arc that was made up for the anime but is still surprisingly good.

Some of the scenes drag on too long, such as a drugged Gon agonizing about Hisoka, throwing up under a tree and floating in a stream... for what seems like a whole episode. Thankfully there are only a few of these moments, and instead we have some spectacular action sequences involving battleship cannons, tidal waves, blowguns and fishing rods. And the final round of one-on-one fights gets fairly gruesome when Kurapika fights the increasingly crazed Hisoka (who starts slurping his own blood off a card!), and when Gon gets the torturous once-over by Hanzo.

Fortunately between the life-threatening experiences, there's also some fun comedy (Kurapika's violent reaction to Leorio in the nude) and funny dialogue ("What IS this? It's gross, get it off me!" tiny assassin-boy Killua howls after catching his first fish). And one entire episode is devoted to the applicants frantically cramming for a written exam that never happens.

The happy-go-lucky Gon experiences some personal storms here, especially when Hisoka takes pity on him rather than regarding him as an equal, but his sunny personality remains fairly steady. More of Kurapika's bloody past is revealed when he finds a Kurta ship wrecked in the bay, and the chatterbox ninja Hanzo is shown in two different ways -- as a competent, knowledgeable leader who can and will torture almost anyone, and as a quirky guy who spends most of one episode in his underwear ("... if I get any hotter, I think my brain is gonna melt!").

Killua demonstrates his super-assassin skills (casually plucking out a heart), but seems to be on the path to being a normal little boy -- but a rather mind-twisting encounter with one of the other applicants leaves it unclear what will happen next with him.

"Hunter X Hunter Volume 2" is a solid continuation and end to the Hunter Exam, but a shocking end twist serves as the lead-in to a future arc. It's obvious the ride is nowhere near over.』
