Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(If you're new to the Lodoss mythos, this box set likely won't convert you.)
『Record of Lodoss War / 1586640046

I'm given to understand that this box set builds off of a long-standing mythos, and since I'm new to the Lodoss world, please take this review as such: the perspective of someone who picked this up at a used film store because it looked interesting and I have a growing appreciation for anime as a genre. If, on the other hand, you're a long-standing fan of the Lodoss universe, then this review isn't going to be very useful in evaluating whether or not you want to buy this box set and I refer you to the several other wonderful reviews here that review this box set from that perspective, as opposed to an outsider's perspective.

Having said all that, if you are new to the Lodoss mythos, I think it's safe to say that this boxed series isn't going to convert you into a fan. Without mincing words, the series is just plain dull, and that's not an accusation I level lightly. There's a *massive* amount of "filler" here - the starting credits and ending credits alone seem to take up more screen time than the actual 'episodes' (and you can't skip past them because each episode is a single DVD chapter, so you have to fast forward each time which, believe me, gets old fast). Once you get into the actual episode, there's a beginning recap each time, an ending teaser, and a bizarre "second half of the show" that features cartoonish, child-like versions of the main characters making silly puns in voices so shrieky and high-pitched I was afraid our windows would shatter. I usually prefer English dubbing, but we had to switch to the original Japanese for these "second half" sections, because the voices were slightly more bearable. And the jokes aren't even funny or amusing - they're just puns in Japanese that no longer make any sense in English.

So having established that the *actual* episode is, in fact, criminally short, is it at least good? No. The storyline over the entire four discs is always a derivative, D&D-style "travel here and kill bad guys". The bad guys are *never* complex or interesting in any way - with the exception of Ashram, they are all cartoonishly evil jerks who slaughter the innocent for fun and oppress their own troops. (Ashram, the one 'complex' villain is 'complex' by virtue of being moody and indecisive.) The good guys, by contrast, are all good, all the time. King Kashue of Flaime, for example, could have been an interesting personality - he's a 'good' king, but he still desires power and 'a unified Lodoss' at least as much as Ashram does, and some interesting points could have been explored there, but they never are because good guys are all perfect gods in human form and whatever decisions they make are for our own good. Ergo, Ashram's unified Lodoss idea is bad because he's evil and Kashue's unified Lodoss idea is good because he's virtuous. Brand new characters teleport mysteriously into the action, often when cannon fodder is needed, and character motivation will change radically whenever the plotline calls for it, so ultimately all the characters feel like interchangeable pawns in an extremely dull chess game.

Storylines are often simplified in order to make room for other things, but Lodoss' utterly derivative story seems to have been simplified and cut in order to make way for dull voice-overs. Despite the subject matter, there is a dearth of actual action, and what action is here is dull and badly animated. Battles are fought by stringent D&D-style rules (one group of sorcerers laments that they can't go into battle without at least one warrior to protect them while they cast spells), but the animators couldn't be bothered, so "battles" consist of close-up shots of a magic user casting a spell ("Manna of all creation..."), with a follow-up shot of their victim grimacing. Sword battles are rendered by drawing two fighters facing each other, and every five or six seconds they raise their swords and bring them back down again jerkily - I've seen animation by amateur Photoshop users that was more detailed than this.

If you can forgive the simplistic storyline and the battles being too few, too short, and too amateurish, you'll probably find that the characters are equally simple and poorly fleshed out. Aside from the 100% good / 100% evil dilemma, characters are frustratingly stupid at times (like when everyone fails to savvy up to the fact that if there is only ONE sacrificial virgin that is acceptable as a sacrifice to bring about the apocalypse and if it's crucial that she MUST remain a virgin, then maybe the best answer to avoiding the apocalypse is less 'traipse all over creation avoiding capture' and more 'spend some quiet time with that young knight she keeps mooning over') and are more often than not saved - for no reason - by ridiculous deus ex machina conventions ('The king dragon saved us! You remember - *the* king dragon! The one we've never mentioned before and will never mention again? That one!'). Even the voice acting is terribly done, with several characters sounding flat and the dialogue so badly inflected that I began to wonder if the "English" dubs were performed by people who didn't understand what they were reading - it's cringe worthily bad.

When it comes to anime and D&D, I have ridiculously low standards, because I enjoy the genres enough that pretty much anything will please me. There are a lot of things Lodoss could have done to draw me in, despite it's faults - if the character had been more complex, I could have forgiven the terrible battles; if the battles had been rendered better, I could have ignored the simplistic storyline; if the storyline had been longer and better characterized, I could have forgiven the terrible, flat voice acting and the shrill "second half" insanity. All together, though, I simply could not enjoy Lodoss War and was extremely relieved when we finally finished it. If you're a huge fan of Lodoss, this will probably feel like a decent tribute to a great mythos that you enjoy, but if there's no nostalgia here to lighten the faults a bit, you likely won't enjoy this at all.』

(I unbiasedly liked this one.)
『I actually watched this one (Heroic Knight) "out-of-order" (having bought it BEFORE the original Record of Lodoss War). I genuinely liked it, and feel it stands well on its own two feet.

I partly wanted to watch it on its own because I didn't want to prejudice or bias my review by having seen the "prequel" first (some folks had griped that it was different from or not as good as the original). IE, I didn't want to have anything to compare it to, or for it to have to "best in mortal combat."

If taken on its own, and under its own power, it appears to be internally consistent, has decent animation. Though I like the opening credits animation BETTER than the animation of the series itself. If they'd used animation similar to opening credits throughout the series I'd have LOVED the series. Honestly the opening credit artwork is pretty cool. But just on its own merits I liked the series. It looks and feels like a fantasy epic. Perhaps not AS sweeping as some others out there. There were a few bad voice acting moments in the opening episodes (episode2, especially, with Parn, if I recall right), but that clears up by the time the series really gets going. So I won't dock them for it. Call it opening night jitters.

I'd say that if you like "fantasy anime," this one's decent. Haven't seen many to compare it to yet. But as I said, on its own merits it's pretty good, for what it is. I'd have no qualms recommending buying it.』

(The Lodoss War Series...(Spoliers))
『Their are spoilers in this review, so don't read if you want to look at the series with "fresh eyes", as it were.

This review will be simple, and to-the-point.

First the good, then the bad.

The good:

This arrived in GREAT SHAPE, and arrived early!

The series comes on 4 DVDs, and the packaging presentation is very professional.

The price, at $34.95, was a GREAT value (And even BETTER VALUE when you get the OVA boxed set of 13 episodes in the same order, for under $80!).

Deedlit and Parn, they are great charachters to watch, with great voice actors, they are always good...

The bad:

Not ENOUGH Deedlit and Parn...what a shame...this series should have been about D and P with more adventures, until the very end...

ALl of a sudden, on Disc B, all the charachters voices are changed! And their actors are terrible to the originals!

Also, all of a sudden, the main cast completes their quest all too early, then switches to a new rag tag group you have never met before (except seeing Spark as a child earlier on...)

Deedlit and Parn never kiss, after going through all of that together, not even one kiss...this is a serious lack of closure for me, as a big fan of Lodoss War.

The new crew that takes over after Parn and the others is pretty annoying at first, especially that punk Spark. Man, I hate his charachter...

Compared to the OVA, the animation, while not terrible, suffers in the quality department.

I hated the ending, it should have been about Deedlit and Parn, not Spark and his group!

In spite of the faults, the incredible value elevates this to FOUR stars out of FIVE. To think, fo years, they sold this same set for nearly $130!

Take my advice, wait for the series to lose popularity before buying it, that is what I am doing with Wolf's Rain...once it is $50 or below, I will get my copy of it!

In the end, the OVA is much better, but the series is still worth a watch.

(Just buy the cheaper import...)
『I bought the $129.99 original US release of the series and it was costly. I watched and compared it to the original Record of Lodoss War, and I was just surprised how off the series is in a way. Personally, I should have bought the imported version of the series, since they're much cheaper and the US release isn't even worth it much. In a way, I regret buying the US release, but don't get me wrong, I still liked the series, although the Remastered Edition of the original Record of Lodoss is much better in detail and animation. The only things wrong with this series and the previous one are some of the bad english dubbing (Man, if you listen to Prince Reonna or whatever his name was in this series, you'll get a good laugh on how pathetic, and mismatched his voice-over really is; picture a large, broad blonde man speaking like as if he was a short or rather weak man).』

(re: Avoid entirely)
『I just watched this with friend and family, and we're all very confused. None of us are constant anime followers, but we aren't novices either.

The story is simple enough, but there are considerable loopholes and bad characters.

Despite what the editorial reviewer from Amazon says, King Kashue does NOT idolize Parn, it's PARN who "idolizes" Kashue. Kashue is fond of Parn, but does not idolize.

Here's the lowdown: the first DVD chapters 1-14 tries to focus on Parn, who is a simplistic village boy, son of a Heroic Knight of some distant war. Parn grew up in the same village with Etoh, the cleric. Meets up with the High Elf Deedlit, and the Enchanter Slayn and Ghim the dwarf.

They almost save the village from random total annhilation by possess goblins and Parn barely wins his first experience one-on one melee with the lead goblin.
From there, this groupgoes on a series of seemingly random adventures. They have a loose collective idea to go meet an Archmage named Wort.

Viewers are introduced to the uber-bad guys, the Black Knight (who's name we don't learn until episode 12, Ashram) his little gang that includes a powerful mage and some powerful fighter that we learn in episode 17 is Emperor Beld and the mage ended up being the central player named Wagnard. We learn HIS name in episode 24.
The "Hero", Parn, ends up saving the elf girl from some nonsensical plot that I won't reveal in any "spoiler".

Main complaints: it's slow and boring. Too much talk. For example: the hero group (Parn, etc), spends three frames and two episodes talking about the Forest of No Return; and they "return in less than ten minutes?" It also didn't make sense how they returned. They just fell out of the forest into another more normal forest (!)
The prologue did not connect with the rest of the story and they kept injecting it in the story. They didn't' have a map, so the viewers had no sense of the kingdoms or alliances.
They built the story of Wort and getting to him up and then used the Heroes' adventure there in a flashback?
the whole thing with Karla and Wort didn't play for me; it took Wort too long to intervene. Karla switching to the last body didn't make sense either.
They took too long to introduce character names and added two new characters in the middle of the story (the Beserker and his companion) for no rhyme or reason. Deedlit's voice was annoying, and it seemed weird that the enemies always picked on her; is she the only High Elf? Who knew? No explanation?
Who is Prince Jester? Which group did he belong to? What happened to him after the battles?
They focused way too much story time on the two swords, and the dragons. The dragons they built up to, and then they dropped the storyline for three episodes?

The names, by the way, is too funny, it's sad. Couldn't they have come up with better names? They're awful!! Deedlit???[what are those things coming out of her head, ears, or carrots?] Parn? Wort? Wagnard? Sheesh. Woodchuck? Is Etoh a female or male?
oh well.

the music was good, the dark elf woman was good looking. Ashram was cool

Avoid, though kids may like this....and TRUE anime fans may also. If you can put up with how slow it is.』

『Five years past, a band of six adventurers defeated the conquering armies of Marmo, the dark island, and saved the accused island, LODOSS. Since that day, the survivors have been honored as heroes, and their deeds have become legends. But the darkness never perished... Now, a mad wizard threatens to raise an ancient evil— the goddess of destruction. Old heroes must heed the call to defend their homeland and new heroes are forged as the battle for LODOSS begins anew.』
Record of Lodoss Warbegan as a serialized role-playing game inComptiquemagazine in 1986. The story was adapted to novelizations, audio books, and video games, followed by a 13-part OAV (original animation video) series, which was released in two parts in 1990 and 1991. Five years later, the 27-part broadcast series was completed. Although some characters, settings, and incidents appear in both continuities, the OAV and broadcast versions ofLodoss Warwere made independently, and the discrepancies in their sword-and-sorcery narratives can't be reconciled.

The broadcast series is divided into two linked adventures involving the supernatural treasures hidden by the last rulers of the Kingdom of Sorcerers 500 years earlier. The first tale (eight chapters) centers on Parn, the honorable Free Knight, and his High Elf companion Deedlit, the heroes of the OAV series. With some help from an assortment of allies that includes King Kashue of Flaim, an annoying grass sprite, and a berserker mercenary, Parn defeats the megalomaniacal knight Ashram, who seeks to rule a united Lodoss with the Scepter of Domination. The second adventure takes place 10 years later and focuses on Spark, a young Knight-in-Training at the court of King Kashue, who idolizes Parn. Spark and a veritable army of secondary characters battle the evil sorcerer Wagnard, who plots to resurrect the destroyer-goddess Kardis. Kardis will destroy every other living thing in Lodoss, leaving Wagnard to rule an eternal Kingdom of the Dead. From these adventures and Parn's counsel, Spark learns what it means to be a true knight; he wins the respect of his men and the love of his lady. Unfortunately, the story line breaks down in the later episodes, when writer Katsumi Hasegawa seems to lose track of the plot and many of the characters. Ashram returns--despite having fallen into a lava pit in episode 8--but as a noble and prudent ruler. Karla, the ancient gray witch, opposes Wagnard, then allies with him. Several "dei ex machinae" appear at the last minute to save situations. The lapses in the storytelling may help to explain why many fans prefer the shorter OAV series, although both versions offer plenty of ancient prophecies, spells, dragons, duels, star-crossed romances, and apocalyptic threats. The individual episodes are separated by "Trailers," odd little segments in which child versions of the main characters make fun of each other and the story. Unrated. Suitable for ages 13 and up: minor nudity and profanity, considerable violence and grotesque imagery.--Charles Solomon

(Great series)
『You need to get all of the series, it is short but would make a good movie if put togather.』

(Yukikaze delivers)
『I'm not particularly interested in fancy aircraft, military jargon, or realistic air combat, so most everything that gets mentioned in the same breath as Yukikaze is not my cup of tea. Though, the plot is not especially unique, this anime has what alot of those in the same genre do not; loads of atmosphere, and dressed down, believable characters. Yukikaze is as much a character as Rei and Bukhar. The trippy down tempo soundscore definetely enhances the scenes rather than jar or distract the way that some anime's soundtracks do. There's not alot of high sounding retoric, or exposition. I can't sit through much of that. Instead it's all pretty straight forward, with a reasonable sequence of events and resolution. I'm sure the sci-fi, and aircraft enthusiasts will get even more out of it than I did. The anime legends collection is definetely worth checking out.

(If you like Robotech, you'll love YuKikaze)
『First, great price for a 3 DVD set.

YuKikaze has an incredible and top of the line animation. The flight action sequences are really intense and well designed. It reminds me of Macross Zero, another flawless animation like YuKikaze.』

(the Top Gun of Anime)
『This is about a group of jet fighter jocks. But instead of Migs here they are battling an alien enemy called the Jam on an alien planet. The main character's Jet has an on board A.I. (Artifical Intelligence) system that aids the pilot and weapons officer.』

(All in all, pretty good science fiction (4.5/5))
『Yukikaze is the tale of a forgotten war on another planet, connected to Earth by an anvil-shaped cloud in Antarctica. Apparently around thirty years ago an alien race known as the JAM invaded via said cloud, but made little headway before being beaten back into their home territory. Currently the war is being fought by a number of rejects from across the world - and for one of them, Rei Fukai, the line between the JAM and humanity is increasingly blurred as he finds himself the target of a plane identical to his. There's also another problem - his onboard AI, Yukikaze, begins to exercise an almost hypnotic control over him. However, its seemingly crazed actions may be the only thing capable of winning the war.

Yukikaze's plot is deep, and there are several substories and additions that one may find quite interesting. As the characterization goes, I find it (as one other reviewer said) a tad effiminate regarding the two main characters, the main reason being the animation style they are drawn in. The eyes are sometimes too feminine, the hair at times appears too smooth/wavy, and for some reason the animators have an annoying penchant for drawing the legs TOO long and willowy. However, as these things go, they are minor complaints and don't detract too much from the overall product.

For, as one will perceive from both the limited edition and the normal box covers, Yukikaze is an action-laded anime, the centerpiece of which is the fighter jets. Being an avid fighter buff, this is the primary reason I bought the movie. I do realize that some would prefer the seamless CG integration to be used in fantasy genre endeavors instead of "pointless" jet fighters, but this is a ridiculous complaint (especially when considering that fantasy is the dominant form of anime nowadays and airplanes are a niche). The designs of the airplanes are very well done, with some resemblance to the F-35 and some experimental jets. The combat sequences, as some have already said, are masterpieces (I do have one gripe though - there's no music. WHY?). There are also several VERY memorable action scenes separate from the dogfights. This is a great effort on Gonzo's part.

There remains one error, though - the dubbing. I'm normally an opponent of rabid "subbers" as far as anime goes, having no problem with most dubbing jobs, but the work done here is undeniably sub-par. Some of the sentences are extremely convoluted, and the voice actors (in keeping with the dark feel, a little TOO much) are often monotonous. At times this effect is almost comedic, such as when Rei and his boss have a "party" of sorts, or when the latter says "no. I'm...happy..." in a borderline catatonic tone. However, the subbed version is always available.

Overall, Yukikaze is a great anime for any science fiction fan, and for the rest, very entertaining.』

『Unbeknownst to the general population, 33 years ago, an alien force, the JAM, opened an interdimensional gate in Antarctica to invade the Earth. In response to this threat, the unified forces of Earth formed a military unit to combat these aliens, successfully pushing them back to the planet codenamed: Fairy. Even now, the war still rages on. Rei Fukai, a pilot of the elite FAF unit of the Special Air Force (SAF), flies the Yukikaze, an advanced fighter with a near sentinent computer control system. However, the recent infiltration of human disguised-JAM agents has begun to blur the lines between friend and foe. As the SAF's own fighters begin to turn against their own forces, the Final Battle for the skies of Fairy and control of 'the Passageway' to Earth will rest in the hand of Rei, and the only thing he can trust: The Yukikaze. Genre: Action / Sci-Fi. From Studio Gonzo.』
『Thirty-three years ago, the mysterious aliens known as the JAM tried to invade Earth through an interdimensional passageway they established in Antarctica. The conflict has shifted to Fairy, the home planet of the JAM: deadly air battles rage almost continuously above its surface. Lt. Rei Fukai serves in the elite Special Air Force, whose mission is to collect data on the enemy. An alienated loner, Rei's only bonds emotionally with Major Jack Bukhar, his commander and friend (lover?), and Yukikaze, the super-sophisticated computer system his plane, the B-3. The narrative is often choppy and there's little character development in the first episodes. ButYukikazeboasts unusually snazzy special effects, including some skillfully directedTop Gun/Star Wars-style aerial dogfights. Director Masahiko Ohkura uses 3-D computer graphics with exceptional panache to create a flashy, exciting adaptation of Chouhei Kambayashi's novel. (Very funny anime)
『This is a very cute anime. It is a story of a world full of magicians where everyone has magic, but they can only use thier powers a certin number of times. The story's main character Kazuki, is considered a loser because he can only use his magic 8 time in his life. If he uses all his magic he will turn to dust. However his entire life changes when he discovers he is from a long line of powerful magicians, and three beautiful girls begin chasing him for his "genes". Yuuna, Kuriko and Rin begin a competition for his superior DNA, and constantly throw themselves at the reluctant Kazuki. Together this group gets into all sorts of crazy situations forcing Kazuki to use his limited magic. This anime is very funny and oh so cute.

It is the complete collection containing all 24 episodes. The audio options are English or Japanese with subtitles for either. There is not much in the way of special features except trailers for other animes. Overall I think if you enjoyed animes like "Love Hina" or "Negima" you will like this anime.』

(Anime is great half way through the series)
『This anime is really funny up until midway through the series. Then it feels as if an entire new team of writers took over to finish it. Still worth watching though.』

(its ok)
『its ok, though sometimes you find yourself back tracking to try and understand the story.』

(Really enjoyable =))
『Anime titles these days do little to keep my interest. Nothing compares to Sailor Moon and the mystery factor that they have in each episode. I also enjoy Dragon Ball Z but one fight scene can drag across 6 episodes&it also contains a lot of characters just starring at one another waiting 4 something to happen.

Anyways this is a great series&resembles Harry Potter somewhat as they are all male warlocks&female witches with special powers so to speak&they go to an academy dedicated to people with magic powers. The main male character can only use his powers like 8 times and 3 girls want to be with him for his DNA but only 1 truly loves him. Anyways it's a fun show&lots of fun laughs with great dubbing as usual from the folks at ADV. Price tag was a big hefty but wait till it drops before you get it. Other then that i really enjoyed this title. It didn't have the ADDICTIVE factor like Sailor Moon but it had enough of it to keep me watching the next episode. Overall i liked it but the animation can seem a bit sloppy or amateurish at times as if the artist were 1st time animators as oppose to artist that have been in the industry for 10 years&have done tons of anime series.

(Wish they were all this good.)
『I won't repeat the story line. This is a light-hearted comedy romance with great writing and translation (both subtitles and dubbing). I've seen it compared to Harry Potter series. There are some obvious similarities, but there are considerable differences as well, so don't pass it up thinking it's nothing more than a cheap knock-off. The similarities pretty much end at kids in a school who can use magic. There is no actual antagonist in this series, only conflicting goals and interpersonal frictions, much like in real life. It still manages to keep a good pace and stay interesting throughout the series. It is a comedy-romance mostly, but one even us guys can find entertaining. :P It has become one of my favorites in a very short time. I highly recommend it.』
『It’s Harry Potter meets I Dream of Jeannie! Kazuki is the biggest loser at wizard school. He can only use magic eight times in his life before he turns to dust. But his future son is destined to be the most powerful magician of all time. Enter three hotties determined to bear his child.』

(Another Pokemon Hit with My Son!)
『I bought this series for my 9 yr son for Christmas. He watched all 24 episodes in like 2 days! Then started them over again. I guess that means it good to him.』

(A wonderful show, spoiled by poor voice acting)
『I have been a Pokemon fan since I could even remember. This must be Do not buy this dvd. I was looking forward to this season. They story plot is great and the idea.

But Pokemon USA decided to hire cheap imitations which pretty much ruined the season and made fans really upset. The actors that made the show it is today are gone. I could not listen to my favorite character with that poor imitation a Ditto will make. The characters are dull and boring, no emotions at all. It's ashamed that Pokemon USA has to do that. This season had the potential of becoming the best season of the series.

Do not buy this and I would not recommend anyone to buy it. The shows quality went downhill because of Pokemon USA's action. Bring back the original quality back by rehiring the original voice actors.

Thank You

(I Think it's good!)

Will Team Rocket ever give up on stealing Pokémon? Find out in the first half of the final season of the Pokémon Advanced Generation series!』
『The 50-episodeBattle Frontieradventure comes between the PokémonAdvanced Battlestory and theDiamond and Pearl Saga. Ash, May, Max, and Brock roam through forests, towns, and islands, making friends with humans and new Pokémon. Although Max does little but read out the data from the Pokédex, May and Brock have larger roles than usual. May competes in Pokémon Contests, a combination battle and performance that suggests rhythmic gymnastics with an edge. Unlike Ash, she doesn't always win. Brock reveals an unexpectedpaternal streak when he adopts a baby Bonsly that needs constant bottle feeding and cuddling. Ash and Pikachu remain the focus of the stories, and they win several Frontier "symbols" (rather than badges). Some of the material has obviously been re-edited as Ash wins his second symbol in Episode #4,but the episode in which he won the first one isn't included. Episode #15 features an obnoxious, effete gay male stereotype who's out of keeping with the normally innocuous tone ofPokémon. The new voice cast takes some getting used to, as Sara Natachame lacks Veronica Taylor's familiar rasp as Ash.Battle Frontieris an unusually lavishPokémonset, with lots of CG special effects (bubbles, fire, rainbows, etc.) and strange machines for Team Rocket to pilot. But it's one of the less endearing entries in this long-running franchise. (Rated A, suitable for All Ages: minor cartoon violence.)--Charles Solomon

(to reduce some confusion)
『to reduce confusion of Astro Boy DVD series, please note that there have been 3 series so far: the Black and White 1963 series, the 1980 First Color version, and the 2003 Color version with different stories.

The black and white 1963 version has 193 episodes.

The 1980 version has 52 episodes for the Japanese version, with the first and second episodes merged and cut into 1 episode as the US version. The birth of the character Atlas is removed in the US version. As a result, the US version only has 51 episodes.

The 2003 version has 50 episodes. This version once again has one more episode in the Japanese version. The US version has 1 episode less, which is replaced by a "clip show episode". (probably meaning frame by frame). Personally, I think the 1980 version is slightly cuter than the 2003 version. The 2003 version is more lavish.

More information can be found on Wikipedia: use the keyword Astro Boy, and then try Astro Boy 1980 and Astro Boy 2003』

(Overpriced and incomplete)
『As per usual, my ratings given are for this release, and not for the content.

Simply put, this is not a a true "Collector's Edition". It's priced as one, but it's not at all a complete edition, something on this scale and at this price should include all the original japanese language soundtrack with english subtitles.

A real let down.

Sadly even if you remember it in english as a child, you don't get that because the studio destroyed the original copies. So it's not so good for nostalgia, and not good for japanese animation buffs.』

(Astro Boy Ultra Collector's Edition DVD Set 1)
『Astro Boy - Ultra Collector's Edition DVD Set 1

This is a beautifully packaged and presented DVD set, which has obviously been put together with great care. The episodes are fantastic, and it is interesting to see how the story lines were morphed in the creation of later series.

The robot/human rights issues are if anything more pronounced in the older series reproduced here.

A warning, these dvds did not play on my multi-region player in Australia. This is something Amazon warned me about, so I was prepared for it. However, I was able to get around this using a certain back-up utility:-).

Great job, and on to Set 2!』

(Astro Boy returns!)
『I don't know if anyone under a certain age would really be able to appreciate this set, but for someone like me who saw and loved these as a kid, this is a long awaited release. Sure it's "only" in black and white, and the sound on some of the episodes leaves something to be desired, but these cartoons have something a lot of todays animated shows for kids lack and that's HEART! I had also forgotton the surprising amount of adult themes in some of the stories. The role of technology, human-robot relations, and whether robots are really " alive ". A lot of ideas that would much later be developed to a greater degree, of course, in movies like " Blade Runner ". And characters actually die on occasion. Plus there are plenty of cool robots, monsters, aliens and gangsters that look like they stepped out of an old Warner Brothers movie! And to top it off, the upbeat Astro Boy theme music. So, if you're expecting " Ghost in the Shell " style animation...look elsewhere. But if you are an old die-hard Astro Boy fan, you are going to love this, faults and all!』

(I feel like a boy again!)
『Hello Astro Boy fans!

I was about 7 years old when this series first aired on television. Being raised in a middle class family, in 1963, we had only one television. Everything was in black and white and there were only 7 channels on the VHF air waves. Cable didn't exist and the internet was the subject for magazines like "Popular Science" or comic books: It simply didn't exist. Color had not really come out yet and when it did come out, you had to be very rich to afford a color TV. The channels our black and white set could recieve were 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11&13. Channel 2 was CBS; Channel 4 was NBC; Channel 5 was KTLA; Channel 7 was ABC; Channel 9 was KHJ; Channel 11 was KTTV and Channel 13 was KCOP.

That was it back then. We didn't have desk top computers or any of the high tech gadgets young people take for granted these days. Most of these technological changes came after 1981.

The best anyone personally had, in the way of a calculating device, was either an abacus or a slide rule back in those days. (lol) I remember sharing this with a group of friends in my mid twenties, while sitting next to me was a beautiful, 10 year old boy, who looked up at me, with Astro Boy eyes, asking "What's a slide rule?". Boy it sure made me feel old, after a quarter of a century of living, being asked the question. I guess you can tell when you are getting older, once you start to use the words; "Do you remember when". I do that allot at 50 years of age these days. (chuckling)

The really big computers; I did get to see as a boy. Those units took up an entire building with their vacuum tube/transitors. Next to how things look today, you might say we looked rather backwards in those days next to today's technology; but it was a magical time to be alive in regardless. You can watch the movie "Destination Moon" and get a pretty good idea how rheostats, dials and gauges looked back when I was a boy. In fact I use to take apart old abandoned radios that had been thrown away near some old railroad tracks where we use to live, just to salvage their old parts to help me learn how they worked: This was before Radio Shack offered kits to teach young boys, like me, how such things worked. In fact, back in those times; Heathkit was the name if you wanted to buy do it yourself components while teaching yourself electronics.

From 1981 on; I watched as our whole society started to change into the world of Astro Boy! Even the planning being done for cars, that will run themselves without drivers in the not so distant future, is well in the works these days, just as Osamu Tezuka forsaw back in his day. I suspect someday soon, the real Tobio will be born to ride in one of those cars; given the direction technology is taking mankind. I also can see the day when artificial intelligence will be more real than anyone ever imagined, providing mankind doesn't destroy itself getting there.

The original 1963 Astro Boy, not only taught us great values growing up, concerning righteousness and kindness toward each other, but it paved the way showing us what our future might look like and it appears Osamu Tezuka hit allot of things right on the mark since then. The laws that make up the human heart, of course, never changes: Those are timeless and Osuma did a grand job covering the variables of good vs evil; not to mention the preciousness of human life in his work.

These anime's are nothing but uplifting to watch. You go to bed having nothing but good dreams when you watch this old series. These days; there is little on TV, let alone in the theatre's, that leaves you with this kind of feeling; with so much being darkness in all our movies these days. In fact, when my cousin recently took me to a nearby DVD store, all I could see with the covers of all the DVD's, that lined the shelves, was artwork that was always dark and foreboding. At my age, you see things allot more clearly than the young do and boy I could hardly wait to get out of that store. Very little was uplifting on the shelves or worth buying in my view. For the most part, I keep my buying assigned to the internet these days, while being careful what to chose to add to my library and I love shopping on Amazon because of its review section.

I carefully select what is to go in my library and for something to be considered, it must have a good story line that teaches a good moral or gives a profound revelation about human nature. It must also have good character development as well. I don't mind the clash beteen good and evil; but I do love a happy ending. Cecil B. Demil was right when he said; "You can show all the evil you want on the silver screen, but make sure good wins out over evil or your audience will hate you."

I don't know of any film, which has broken that rule, that has survived in anyone's memory. Even the Harry Potter films operate from a simple premise of good vs evil and very successfully I might add. The premise Jo Rawlings is using is very simple: Dumbledore is God; Voldermort is the Devil; Hermoine, Ron and Harry are the soul; (the mind, the heart and the will) with Hogworts being their spiritual realm of operation or the Universe. Gene Roddenberry knew the same formula with Star Trek. Spock, McCoy and Kirk are the soul; (the mind, the heart and the will) travelling in a body; (the star ship Enterprise) suspended between the good and evil of the Universe or Spiritual realm of God.

In short, you can't get away from the good and evil aspects of free will in God's Universe, but if the good was not always winning out, then the Universe, it seems to me, would have destoyed itself a long time ago, especially this world. Our kids need this message of hope and the old Astro Boy series brings that home.

While the 1983 and 2004 remakes are different from the 1963 original; those works should not be compared to the 1963 original, although I do see the 1983 remake followed allot of the original 1963 story lines. In fact, I think the 1983 remake was a little more "cutesy", than the 1963 formulation; but I still enjoyed it. 1983 and 2004 were different times and those works are great in their own right. I especially loved the 2004 remake. Very intense and more together in terms of the major story behind Astro; which is the natural world vs. the synthetic world our science has unleashed, since the first A-Bomb was dropped and how the two clash looking for coexistence. How it all turns out, it seems only Astro knows in the end.

While the 1975 master reels were destroyed, I think the folks who did all they could to round up master copies, while syncing up the sound, did a great job; all things considered. Only about three episodes have sound quality that sounds like the recording was recorded in a glass jar, but otherwise the rest of the audio is just great. Looks almost new for the most part.

The design work on the box is just fine: Very tight package. Even the booklet that comes with the set gives a good history behind the whole Astro Boy phenomenon. The lithographic printing is excellent for both box cover and booklet I might add. There is even an extra disk which includes the first of a two part interview with Fred Ladd, who tells a little more of how Astro Boy made it to the United States from its original Japanese audience and boy am I sure glad it did. It sure helped my childhood along. My thanks to the late Osamu Tezaka for his gift to all us kids and his vision of what could be a great future one day.

All in all, it's all worth the price of admission. This is gret for the whole family. Delivery was on time. No complaints! Thanks Amazon for making this available to my generation again. I should think kids of today would enjoy the old series, like we did as kids; that is when they are not too busy being blown away by the 2004 remake of Astro. (chuckling)

Astro Boy can swim oceans, leap over mountains, even fly into space on his own power. However, Astro Boy can't replace his son; Dr. Boyton becomes dissatisfied with the boy robot and disowns him. Astro Boy is befriended by Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun of the Institute of Science, who guides him through his adventures. Astro Boywas not the first Japanese animated series, as some fans have claimed, but it was the first with an ongoing storyline--and the first to air in the U.S. Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) began Tetsuwan Atom (literally "Iron-arm Atom") as a manga in 1952, then adapted it to a TV series that debuted in January 1963. NBC Films bought the rights to about half of the 193 episodes and edited them for American viewers.Astro Boypremiered in the U.S. in September 1963, and ran on local stations through 1972. The story is well-known to anime fans: After the death of his son Astor (Tobio in Japanese), Dr. Boyton (Dr. Tenma) builds a 100,000-horsepower super-robot to replace him. But a robot can never grow and truly replace Astor, so the scientist sells him to a cruel circus owner. Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun (Dr. Ochanomizu) rescues Astro and helps him become a fighter against crime and injustice.

The original English-language masters were destroyed in 1975, when Tezuka's Mushi Productions went bankrupt. For the Ultra Collector's Edition, Right Stuf tracked down the best surviving voice elements and combined them with video from the original Japanese negatives. Not surprisingly, the sound quality varies on the discs, but barring the discovery of additional material in some forgotten vault, this is the closest to a definitiveAstro BoyEnglish speakers will see. Tezuka wrote some of the scripts and co-directed the 1980 remake (Astro Boy Collection Box Set); the 2003 incarnation combined drawn and CG animation (Astro Boy: The Complete Series). But the stiff, black-and-white original remains the truest version of Tezuka's watershed creation. Extras include: the first part of an interview with producer Fred Ladd; two episodes in Japanese with subtitles; small galleries of character art and merchandise; "The History of Astro Boy" in booklet form; and a biography of Tezuka. (It's a keeper!)
『When it comes to shoujo anime, I loathe it. It's probably one of my least favorite genres. So when a friend of mine wanted me to sit down and watch Marmalade Boy with her, I was considering either becoming unexplainably ill or coming up with a "sudden death in the family" to keep me from the agony of a romantic plot line. However I ended up watching it with her anyway, and the unthinkable happened... I got hooked. We were watching it on dub and at first the only thing keeping me going were the horrible voices on one or two of the characters (I think I was laughing at all the moments I shouldn't have been laughing at), but after a while I got used to the voices and all of a sudden the plot was dragging me in! The majority of the characters actually interested me, save the main character Miki who would have been better off swallowing a knife. The character Satoshi Miwa, in my opinion, was probably the best of them all. Of course, most of my fascination probably comes from his blue mullet, but still his character was quite humorous and I enjoyed it. So, seeing as how I liked Marmalade Boy (which is still somehow a shock to me) I ended up purchasing and watching Scrapbooks 1 and 2, and now I have disk sets three and four coming in the mail right now, and I can't wait to watch the rest of this series. So yes, from a person who typically HATES shoujo, I would reccomend this title. And if you watch it, make sure to also watch the commentary... it was flippin hilarious.』

(stop the mad ness)
『just when you thought you found a show that was onley going to be short you get one that takes you from japan to american and back arrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh when will it end』

(Love this series!!)
『I just finished the third scrapbook volume and I can't wait for the fourth and final one. As for this one I gave it five stars mostly because of the episode commentary in the extras section on disc two. I have never laughed so hard in my life. The voice actor for Yuu is hilarious and so is the voice actor for Miki. The volume itself is excelent. I was surprised with the new character Kei I can't help but like him even though he's a little devious. Poor misguided piano player, Miki will set you straight. Any way this was a great volume and again you have to see the episode commentaries they are hilarious.

(Excellent Anime, This One Lacking)
『Marmalade Boy is an excellent anime and I recommend it for anyone to watch. It's a drama between Miki Koishikawa and Yuu Matsurra. I won't say too much because incase you havn't seen the first volume. I will critique one and two.

When I bought the first I was quite extactic at how excellent it was. The opening theme song is superb but, the end is a little confusing. Who's house is that? You'll see what I mean. It isn't the best animation in the world but, remember it's from 1994. It took them 10 years to get it to the U.S. and translated. In volume one, Miki's parents suddenly decide to swap "parters" with the Matsuuras. Miki is not okay with this at all and she won't allow it. Finally she gives in and they all move in together in one giant house. Over the course of volume one and partially into two, Miki hides it because she thinks people will assume her family is nuts. Miki has to battle between two people. Yuu and her best guy friend Ginta. When Miki was younger she told Ginta something, and wrongly assuming his response, her heart was shattered by it. There happens to be a love triangle between these three! Then you learn about Yuu's past, Miki's best friend Meiko's secret, and a character named Arimi comes in and spoils the fun for all!

I am giving volume two four stars for a few reasons. I thought it was a bit dissapointing on how it seems to drag on. If you have read the Marmalade Boy manga, you can see that the anime has much much more than the manga. In the anime they add a key item that is so important I don't know how they added it in even though it wasn't in the manga, the medallion! That is one of the main things in the anime as well as the robot diary! Also, in the anime they portray Miki as a winy little girl. If you watch it a few times she won't seem like that but, in the manga she wasn't such a "drama queen." Well in this volume a few things are uncovered and Miki learns things from Yuu and Yuu from Miki. As pressures high, love is spuring in the air. In this volume you meet four new characters, Satoshi Miwa, Suzu Sakuma, Anju, and Kei Tsuchiya. Suzu stirs up mishchief, Satoshi "interferes", Anju is a childhood friend with a secret love, and Kei is just a hot head with one thing on his mind, MIKI! Will Yuu and Miki be tested or will "love conquer all"? Also, there is a band that plays and the ending title changes! It's wonderful! ^^

I recommend this to any who likes, shojo, romance, or drama. It's is packed with excitement and is appealing to the heart. This happens to be one of my all-time favorite anime's. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well!』

(LOVE IT!!)
『Marmalade Boy is a super cute series for the hopelessly romantic, and funny enough to hold the interest of the male species :)』
『Miki and Yuu are in the center of a romantic whirlwind--not only are Ginta and Arimi trying to get in the middle of their relationship, new friends and relatives are becoming involved in this muddled mess! With part-time jobs, holiday trips, sports and school activities, are Yuu and Miki too busy to recognize their true feelings for each other? Or will misunderstandings and secrets drive them apart? The drama has never been so delicious!』

(A Nice Supernatural Anime But Not Up To Par Of What I Expected)
『The series is very reminiscent of another supernatural series called Requiem Of Darkness and while both series are entertaining in themselves at the end they just don't seem to live up to the expectations given to them. The animation is decent and for the series fitting as the show is very dark and supernatural but there is a little graininess in some scenes, also while the Japanese cast did great with their roles sadly with the exception of about four voice actors/actresses the English dub cast were terrible, saying their lines with so little emotional feelings you wonder why they tried for these roles in the first place if they were just going to do a atrocious job of it. The live action movie is pretty decent to but they didn't do any dubbing for the live action movie and I truly appreciate that especially if they were going to use the same actors and actresses from the series. At the end is this box set worth getting for any anime collectors collection, and if you like dark supernatural animes than yes it is but I say wait until the price goes down to around $30 dollars as this set doesn't seem to be worth more than that it seems....』

(DARK&COMPLICATED.)
『A GREAT SHOW. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. BUY THIS ONE WITHOUT HESITATION. WELL WORTH THE MONEY&TIME.』

(Most avrage americans would not be able to take the out-of-this-worldness of this series.)
『I love this amime because it's so different form a lot of the stuff we are watching now-and-days. A very well put togeter show that every out-of-the-box person should watch.』

(Quick Boogiepop review)
『If David Lynch made an Anime, it would likely look something like this. Completely weird and wonderful.
"The past will often attack the present with the pain of your memories."』

(Pay attention!)
『I have seen alot of good anime this one is no exeption. This anime is very dark and mysterious but entertaining. This series may seem random, but, trust me, it will all make sense in the end. It also has a hidden meaning in it as well. My only advise to you is pay careful attention when watching this anime. It is confusing and sometimes it won't make sense to you at all, but if you keep watching the episodes you'll get it.』

(A Great Anime At The Look Of The Chaotic Times During The Meiji Restoration)
『I actually got this at the time I was watching the series Rurouni Kenshin and the Samurai X movies it's amazing seeing how these series give both sides a claim to their views of their reasoning for which side they fought for and why. This series deals more favorable with the Shinsengumi giving them a more humanized appeal to the viewers and their personal reasons or feelings for which they joined up for. The series also seems to focus more on Tetsu an idealistic young man who feels that if he joins the Shinsengumi group he'll become strong enough to avenge the deaths of his parents and protect his love ones. His older brother Tatsunosuke sees the more realistic points for trying to stop his brother from joining the Shinsengumi as the way he feels now. In the group you will also have some who will either encourage or try to dissuade Tetsu from the path he's on. The animation is great as well as the voice actors they got for this series the video is full-screen with 5.1 English
or Japanese audio. The extras aren't much pretty much the usual trailers
and intro/ending songs but for the price this great series is well worth it. I will say like some other anime series this is not really a family
anime as there is a great deal of violence, bloody deaths, and mature themes some younger family members or friends should see. After you're done with this series I say try watching the Samurai X box set or the Rurouni Kenshin series to see the opposing sides view of the Shinsengumi
both these series sets are also very good though with the Samurai X box set I'd advise watching it subbed unfortunately the English voice actors for that set weren't as good as the actors for the Rurouni Kenshin series
set..

(Tear jerking)
『This story was great! I laughed. I cried. I hated and loved the bad guy. Sumumu has to be my favortie character next Okita. I have actually watched the whole this twice.』

(Another perspective)
『A large number of anime fans are familiar with Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, a fictionalized account of the Meiji Revolution from the Loyalist point of view. In Peacemaker Kurogane, we get essentially the same story, only this time from the point of view of the Pro-Tokugawa forces - in particular the Shinsengumi guard, several of whom were supporting characters in the Kenshin franchise - and this rather underated historical actioner is an excellent companion piece to it's more famous counterpart.

It follows the story of the real-life Tetsunosuke Ichimora, age 15. After the brutal murder of his parents at the hands of Loyalists, Tetsu vows to join the Shinsengumi over the objections of his frantic big brother Tatsunosuke. His life becomes entwined with that of other characters both real and fictional, most notably becoming page to the strict Vice Commander Toshizo Hijikata - who doubts Tetsu will have what it takes when the time for battle arrives; and taken under the wing by painfully young Captain Soji Okita, historically documented to have loved children - who is already beginning to show signs of the Tuberculosis which would eventually kill him and perhaps sensing that he doesn't have much time before becoming incapacitated tries to help Tetsu maintain the moral and spiritual innocence that he himself can never get back.

Can Tetsu find his place in the world and strike a balance between Tatsu's potentially emotionally cripling overprotectiveness and the weight on his soul that joining the fight against the Loyalists might entail? Will vengeance rule his heart, or will he become a peacemaker as his parents would have wanted him to be?

An anime that any fan of historical fiction should enjoy.

(Peacemaker - Complete Collection Review)
『If Rurouni Kenshin left you wanting more feudal-era themed anime, then Peacemaker just might scratch that itch. It's got a good plot, memorable characters, and was beautifully animated by Gonzo. You can't go wrong with the animation studio that also worked on Last Exile, Chrono Crusade, and Samurai 7, among others.』

(Really Good)
『After previous reveiws it seems I will have to say this again (and I might as well say it for every review)

BOX SETS NEVER EVER CONTAIN ALL THE FEATURES OF THE INDIVIDUAL DVDS

Box sets are an economical way of seeing the whole series so they aren't supposed to give the extra features that you see in the individual DVDs because you are paying less. I would only suggest that you buy the individual DVDs if you are rich, or on a series that you really, really, really like.

Overall I really liked this series. It's a nice little samurai tale in favor of the Shinsengumi. The characters are solid and don't go over that stupid character dominance thing and they stay true to who they are and everything plays out on a realistic basis (which to me is the best thing an anime can do).

To start you out with the first episode, you see Tetsunosuke Ichicmura running through Mibu (I believe) with a sign advetising the Shinsengumi. As he gets to the clan hall he is not accepted by the guards because he is too short. Later, after being mauled by a little pig, Tetsu meets the famuous Soji Okita (to which Tetsu was unaware of). Tetsu said he wanted to join the Shinsengumi to slice and dice his way through the Choshu and send Soji Okita sprawling. As an apology for the rudeness of the pic (still doesn't know who he is), Soji offers to pull some strings with the Shinsengumi so Tetsu could join. They soon get to the dojo and Soji talks to the commander (I'm not sure what he says there). Some stuff happens and Tetsu finds out that who he met earily was none other than Soji Okita as the commence in a dojo battle. Tetsu gets knocked down a little bit but before they could finish the fight, vice commander Higikata steps in, stops the fight and says that Tetsu can't join the Shinsengumi. Later on Soji and Tetsu have a talk and Soji gives him some information about an ambush on Higikata later on in the night. Tetsu goes, views from afar, and the episode ends at Tetsu seing what it means to be a Shinsengumi.』

『For 15 year-old Tetsunosuke Ichimura, childhood innocence has given way to a blinding thirst for revenge. Haunted by the vicious slaying of his parents, Tetsu joins a group of elite swordsmen to hunt down the rebels who murdered his parents.』
『Set during the troubled times between the arrival of Admiral Perry in 1853 and the Meiji Restoration of 1868,Peacemaker(2003) often feels like a prequel toRurouni Kenshin, but from the politically opposite side. Tetsunosuke "Tetsu" Ichimura initially seems like an anime stereotype: the irrepressible half-pint who wins out through sheer determination. At 15, Tetsu is stubborn and impetuous, but he's wrestling with personal demons. When his older brother Tatsu becomes a bookkeeper for theShinsengumi, a group of samurai the Shogun organized to protect the capital, Tetsu decides to join the quasi-military corps. His resolute spirit charms fey swordsman Souji Okita, who coaxes iron-willed vice-commander Hijikata into accepting the boy as a page. Tetsu becomes the unofficial mascot of the goofy but deadlyroninof theShinsengumi: they call him "Puppy Boy," tease him about being cute, and even speculate that Hijitaka keeps him around for sexual favors. As the series progresses and the conflict with the anti-Shogun forces nears, Tetsu must decide whether to avenge his parents, who were murdered by Imperialist agents, or become a "Peacemaker," as his father desired. The spectacularly choreographed battle scenes show just how grueling a trial Tetsu faces.

Many of the characters and incidents inPeacemakerare based in fact, although the filmmakers take considerable liberties and the story rambles. But it's the interaction of the characters that gives the series its appeal: Even the minor samurai feel like credible individuals. Writer Hiroshi Yamaguchi and director Tomohiro Hirata refuse to offer facile solutions to Tetsu's inner conflict, which givesPeacemakera satisfying depth. The boxed set lacks the many extras--both on video and in print--that were included with the individual discs. (Rated 15 and older: violence, alcohol and tobacco use, nudity, risqué humor)--Charles Solomon
