(Becomes stranger by the episode)
『I would have really loved this anime if I was around 14, and it is too violent for younger viewers.

The plot, as with most Japanese animation of the 90s, is very incoherent. It is as if the writers decided to take the story in multiple directions and failed in every single one. It tries to be philosophical. Can one obtain happiness without sacrifice?, repeatedly asks the main character, but I really didn't care for the answer to the question because it seemed very trivial to me (adult in his 30s).

How come most of the villians are always wearing a nice suit? How come the giant evil sphere is in a shape of an eye and many of the characters lose their eye? How come Giant Robo (which is purely mechanical) inexplicably cries when it loses its arm? How come Dr. Shizuma just explain things instead looking like a drug addict suffering from severe withdrawl and speech impairment? There are many inexplicable events which this anime does not even attempt to explain.

The 6 episode series starts off great. The initial explaination of Dr. Von Fogler and his attempt to create a "beautiful night" is one of the all time great Japanese animation clips. Rarely has a depiction of a "Mad Scientist" so compellingly dramatized and shown with such unforgettable vision.

But the series takes few twists and starts to introduce unnecessary characters which confuses lot more than it adds to the coherence of the story.

In the end, it is just a cartoon. It is visually satisfying and has enough elements to be worth watching. This is still one of the best Japanese animation of the 90s. Giant Robo is an example of how much Japanese animation has slid from its glory years of late 60s to early 80s.』

(Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good...)

For all the hype and praise surrounding this series, it's really doesn't distinct from the mold too much. It suffers the same standard pitfalls of constant theme announcement, weepy protagonist, convoluted narrative that runs through most anime. The much lauded 'deeply-developed characters' aren't that rounded. Character development is literally shrieked out and slapped in your face ("I DID THIS BECAUSE THIS IS THE WAY I'VE ALWAYS FELT AND THIS IS WHY I DO THINGS!") and there are many last minute revelatory details pertaining to character or plot that seem to be shortcuts if anything. Also, for a series titled 'Giant Robo', we don't see Giant Robo do all that much. While it may be considered standard, I wanted to see Robo fighting some other robots, which is very rare. One last robot vs. robot fight is presented, but nothing happens; The 2 villainous robots heading towards Giant Robo's location never make it by the end of the last episode, which is a bizarre detail. Ultimately, this series lacks focus. There are too many characters who we learn almost nothing about doing far too much in such a short time. Lastly; of my complaints, the ending stumbles badly, resting on the shoulders of characters introduced in the last 3 episodes revealing something vague and ineffective to the plot as well as an awful plot device putting an end-cap on the antagonist.

On the other hand, Giant Robo does a lot of good. The animation is gorgeous, the character design is varied and interesting; the IPO populated by Chinese folk tale amalgamations and Big Fire populated by wild and wide-ranging, original villains. The fully-orchestral score works perfectly, adding an epical punch. I found myself easily invested in some of the characters and the constant threats to their lives ( Which have actual impact; so many characters die that the risk affects everyone.) In general, it's exciting and fun.

If you're going to buy Giant Robo, buy the economy pack. I don't know how many times you'll watch it but it's a good value for an entertaining series.』

(Better than you'd expect!)
『When I first watched this series, I thought it was okay. But it grew on me at a terrific speed and now I'd consider it among the best animes I've seen. Be warned though, it is somewhat incomplete, but still excellent for what it is. The animation is incredible, the writing good and the characters (especially the badguys) are fascinating.

As I understand it the world of GIANT ROBO THE ANIMATION - THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is a shared universe populated several characters from the collected works of mangaka Mitsuteru Yokoyama, whom is under-represented in the West while being highly regarded in Japan. Because Yokoyama's work was varied and included adaptations of classic Chinese works you'll see ancient Chinese warriors fight alongside giant robots and futuristic machines. If you are willing to go with this then you'll enjoy this series, especially for the sheer craziness that it delivers. Yet the story (told in an operatic, over-the-top way) is quite interesting and haunting. And the music is excellent as well, which is always a bonus. It's not really very subtle, but in this case its a selling point. A definite recommendation!

CLARIFICATION: When I said its incomplete I don't mean that there's an episode missing or unfinished. It's just that the producers and director made this series apparently planned several prequels (to which there are frequent allusions) as well as a sequel that would have had an incredible climax. Because the series had a long, delayed production and was not much of a success it seems that none of these sequels and prequels will get produced any time soon. It's kind of like George Lucas first making THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK instead of "NEW HOPE" and then never making any other Star Wars film. It's sad, but true.』

『It is a new dawn for mankind. The Shizuma Drive has brought clean, limitless energy and launched humanity into an age of prosperity. But even in this Eden of technology, there lurk the shadows of envy and greed. Big Fire is a secret brotherhood whose only goal is to direct the world toward chaos. The world is protected by the Experts of Justice, a team of operatives assembled from around the globe to stop the ultimate disaster of The Eternal Night. The key to everything is the bravery of their newest member, a boy named Daisaku Kusama, and the great machine he commands.』

(one of the best anime in years!!!)
『This anime has everything going for it good story, great animation. But the one problem I had with it is that the english voice-overs are just god awful. But the japanese audio with english subtitles is just fine for me. I highly recomend this to anybody who likes an intricate story with good characters. If this is you then prepare to enjoy 25 episodes of pure anime bliss.』

(the ending isn't "reunion")
『This is one of the best series to come out around the turn of the millennium (which was when anime, both domestic to and exported from Japan made leaps in writing and visual quality.

.hack//sign is set inside of an mmorpg, but is a genesis story, describing the nearly aborted birth of a technology based god. Similar anime include serial experiments lain, and akira (for you old school fans.) However, unlike those two, this show uses a very oblique approach to the story telling.

The plot focuses on several loosely related characters who, for one reason or another, form deeper relationships with each other (not necessarily healthy or desirable ones.) The story is told primarily through the conversations of the people, and is designed to be obscure, so that it can take several viewings to fully understand what is happening. This is mostly because, while the setting is congruent (to itself, not the rest of the franchise so much) none of the leading characters have a clear idea of what is going on.

One thing that is made clear early on is that all of the players who play the game are escaping from some trouble in their life. A significant part of the story is watching them all mature, essentially graduating from the game. This is made more interesting because a little over half of the lead roles are adults with careers.

The show's use of conversation to tell a much larger story is well done. The conversations themselves tend to be about the relationships the players have, or the mystery of the game as they see it. Most of them are not friends, but rather are tied together by their belief that a particular player, Tsukasa (the boy/girl on the cover) is essential to solving the mystery. They often alternate between speculating about what they do know and more normal conversation about their lives or the game itself. Also, because most of them do not like each other, they are never all together at the same time (save some brief moments near the end, when all of their lives are in danger,) and actively keep secrets from each other. The evolving dynamics alone would have made the show worth watching, and episode to episode, it is the plot.

The game that the bulk of the story takes place in is difficult to imagine given the interface the players use. Also, when the show was made, mmorpg culture was not well developed, and the creators make some guesses of player behavior that seem rather unlikely today (although there are many failed or less popular mmorpgs that guessed the same thing.) The show, however, does take place in the "real" world, and there are brief static filled sequences that show very important pieces of information, such as player hospitalizations, RL meetings, and personal events from their lives.

The music put the composer on the map. It was hailed as one of the best scores of the year. While many like other scores by Yuki Kajiura, I still think it is her best overall work. Also, the sound mixer does a great job of chopping and splicing up pieces to fit the actual scenes. I have not seen any serialized production do a better job, and if you enjoy analyzing how music is used, you ought to watch this. Outside of the context of the show, the soundtrack holds it own as a great work, but the two together are great memories and the main reason I pull my dvds off the shelf once or twice a year.

I don't think children will understand the story at all, although they may enjoy the experience of watching it. Teens with long attention spans and who listen carefully will likely get a lot out of it, but others will be confused. The story is told rather casually, and there are maybe 30-50 minutes worth of action sequences (themselves very slow) scattered throughout the entire series. It is about relationships and responsibility, and I have often heard the show described as one long conversation. This isn't an entirely unfair description. That said, the depth of motive behind what people say and do in the story means that the players are far from one dimensional and can be related to on a deep level.

Most of the characters are depressed, clinically depressed, at least mildly. Some with good reason, some because they indulge in such a personality. The ones who aren't depressed are angry, which might just be how they express their depression. That said, if you can stand watching these people bite at each other's ego's as they grasp for hope, you will be well rewarded at the end. This idea of negative emotion is important to the plot, and the reason why Tsukasa is important to the mystery. For most the game is where they go because they feel trapped in some way from making progress in thier life. For a couple the game is very much a playground, but neither are healthy people.

This, and other aspect of online gaming culture are explored a bit, although to some inaccuracy of how things really work. These explorations are more the result of the lives of the players involved, and are not presented outside of the context of what they do most of the time. If you enjoy stories that talk about gaming culture, you may wish to watch this, or really any .hack piece, as it is always in the background.

.hack//sign is why .hack is still around. And, unfortunately nothing else in the franchise has measured up. Which is to say, if you like anything else .hack, you may be surprised by how unlike the rest of the franchise this is.

********.hack//sign unison*********

Unison is the name of a special OVA only episode. It was not filmed or aired as part of the original story, but was added with the release of the dvd version, which was after the release of the first PS game. It features characters from both, and so may be a bit confusing if you are not familiar with both. However, it does describe what happens to many of the characters about a year or two after the end of .hack//sign (the game takes place in that interval.) Certainly interesting for the first 15 minutes, but it is a departure from the show in some ways, and isn't necessary. Bascially everyone gets on with life, a few are dating each other, and all of them stay loosely in touch, although the //sign players don't play the game very much. If the show's REAL ending left you hanging too much (which is common in Japanese storytelling, part of a belief that life goes on, and everything repeats) then you may want to give this a look. Otherwise if you enjoyed the ending moments, you don't have to. It isn't really more of the show.

******spoilers, sort of, but you wont know all of this without doing some reading or playing the games**********

There are a few things, however, that they do not make clear in the show. One, that around 2015 (don't remember the dates from the setting) there was a trojan program that was released into the web and necessitated the shutdown of the web and all extant OS's. The company that runs the mmorpg, "The World," also is the company that made the new OS ALTIMAT, which is secure against the trojan. There is no other functional OS in the world at the moment, and the company CC corp is, consequently, king of the heap as having the only OS that wont instantly fail if plugged online. So, "The World" is the only mmo* in the world, and is, consequently, very popular. Other things that are not made clear, NPC's in the game are highly adaptable AI, making for a more immersive experience. This AI technology is part of what makes ALTIMAT secure, and is behind the deus ex machina of the setting.』

(The Review of .Hack//Sign -Complete Collection)
『This is a great series .hack//sign it about a group of people solving problems in "the World". An MMORPG that is very popular in their world, more so than games like WorldOfWarcraft or WarHammerOnline (wow&who) is for us. The main character, Tsukasa, is trapped in the MMORPG and lives in it, meaning he has his five senses in "the world." Also after this anime, there is a 4part PS2 game that follows the storyline. Check it out!』

(A great addition to my collection)
『I was happy when I found this boxed set. I love this series because the characters and the music is sensational. Tsukasa gets trapped in the World and is unable to log out. I must say though that it was odd the whole series he was searching for the key of the twilight. The ending did not confuse me, as it confused everyone else. I've had my share of anime that confuse you.』

(hack link)
『I love this series very much and I love the games even more. The best thing about this format is that it is cheeper than the tin』
『Login to the most successful online game in history. "The World" is being played by millions of people around the world, making it the most popular game ever. Players can go online and trade items, form parties, and go on quests. But none of that concerns Tsukasa. Trapped within "The World", a virtual prisoner - His journey from the digital world to the real world has just begun. From Bee Train! Studios. Series direction by Koichi Mshimo. Concept and character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Genre: Sci-fi/Drama』

(All-in-one solution!)
『My wife and I are avid Slayers fans. We have all three series on DVD and can't wait for the new fourth season to become available.

We have been wanting the movies and OVAs for some time, but simply haven't invested in them. When I saw this become available, it was a no brainer. There is no better way to get all 5 movies and both OVAs.

You get three slim DVD cases in a nice box. DVD #1 has the first two movies, DVD #2 has the remaining three movies, and DVD #3 has the two OVAs (three episodes each). Great audio, great picture, and the DVD menus are fins (albiet a little plain).

If you're a Slayers fan in need of all the movies and OVAs, this is the cheapest way you'll ever find them. It's also very space saving over buying them separately.

One last side note about the content of the movies (which has been explained wonderfully in other reviews, so I'm jsut adding my two-cents). Lena's voice is different from the one in the series. And at first that feels weird, and then it starts to grow on you, and finally you'll find that it's a great voice for the character and it might sound weird to hear the series voice after watching these DVDs.

Heck, even if you already own all of the movies and OVAs separately, buy this to take up less space on your shelf and sell the old ones to help offset the cost.』

(Worthy Remake Of A Classic Anime OVA)
『Area 88 for those who have yet to experience it in any of its many incarnations is a recent remake of a three-episode 1985 series of the same name, which was itself based on an earlier manga series. Like many, you're probably wondering what about the premise warrants so much attention. The answer, in its simplest form, is that it presents a clean, tightly focused tale about a pilot betrayed over a woman and the results of this life-changing twist of fate.

Yes there's enough of a story here to keep the plot moving smoothly along but at its core, Area 88 is an action show that borrows some from some of the more memorable moments in big budget films such as Top Gun and Behind Enemy Lines.

As a bit of a fighter aircraft buff myself, I was quite enthralled with the accurate aircraft specs/ renditions featured in the program but make no mistake, fighter plane knowledge isn't a requisite for enjoying the viewing experience.

The story is technically told through the eyes of a photographer who arrives to the mercenary Middle Eastern air base on a bit of an ulterior motive mission again involving the betrayal mentioned above. I'll refrain from diving too deeply into the plot as most of the fun in the series is following along as the story-layers are unraveled like a proverbial onion.

If you've read along this far in the review, hopefully the reason for revisiting this franchise as often as has been done is becoming clearer. The core of the show involves aerial combat scenes and a near constant dose of sheer dog fighting goodness. While advances in animation technology/ computer generated imaging benefit the industry as a whole, there is certainly ample opportunity to show off just how far things have come in Area 88.

Thanks to computer rendering, a great amount of detail has gone into the planes models, their weapons, and the explosions/ crash sequences. The sounds are especially noteworthy as well, almost offsetting the slightly out of place techno score.

ADV Films deserves credit for assembling a voice cast worthy of the Japanese source material. The English dub is just about flawless in dynamics and believability.

Complaints are very few. In fact the most common seem to be the desire to continue onward with a plot that ends fairly abruptly. Twelve 23-minute episodes are all we're given to begin, develop and conclude the tale. The concept of a full 26-episode run really boggles the mind with what could have potentially been accomplished in terms of character development. As it stands the story is short, sweet, and loaded with action. Viewers who enjoy anime for its methodic building and emphasis on human emotions first and foremost may want to skip Area 88 but everyone else should do themselves a favor by giving the show a try.

Area 88 is available in a Complete Collection (3-disc) set and sold separately across 4 volumes (each containing three episodes). Be cautious when purchasing should you decide to go for the 2008 rendition of the show as the original OVA series from 1985 (from US Manga Corps) often occupies the same shelf space and looks similar in terms of the cover art.

(Intriguing Anime With Great Jet Fighters In Action)
『First of all I never watched the previous OVA series so this review is not tainted in anyway. This series packs a big bang for your buck. The animation style is pretty darn good in my oppinion and the CG mixes well with it. The air battles are superb and the music really gets you going. I liked the characters for what they were as this was a short 12 episode series. And for a fun short series it really mixed the story up with some serious episodes to boot. The reason this doesnt receive a 5 star rating however is because the beginning really doesnt set up what the series is all about. As you watch the series though, the story does unfold but there is a lingering feeling after the first episode of what is the show really about. The other reason for 4 not 5 stars is the ending. I thought it could have been closed up better, although it still works, its more of an "artsy" independent film ending. Anyway this show was great and ADV as always brings a great dub. I just finished it for a second time and I know I will watch it again. Review Over

Oh yeah, other reviewers have said the original Area 88 from the 80s is better, I saw a trailer for it and Im not gonna go back and watch it with its dated animation when this 2005 edition is totally updated and longer in length. I find when people like an older edition over the new its because its what they watched when they were kids and it pulls them back to there childhood. If you havent watched either I would start with this one first. But to each his own.』

(Just stick to the manga version. Anime version is awful!)
『If you are new to the Saiyuki series, you should start with the manga. If you are a fan of the manga, stick to it and never attempt to watch any of the anime version.

Why?

Well, for one thing, the animation quality is really awful. It is nothing like Kazuya Minekura's artwork. The animation also fluctuates sometimes, like it's obvious they where rushing it, or didn't care where it was going. At times, it seems like your watching a really cheap Saturday morning cartoon. Not to mention, some episodes have limited animation (yuck!). The characters designs in here are really bad, like I said, nothing like Ms. Minekura's beautiful art. Do not let the artwork displayed on the box fool you.

Most of the episodes (more than half, about like 35 of the 50 eps) are filler. Really awful filler. They have nothing to do with the story arcs in the manga and a lot of the time have the characters go way out-of-character. It is just atrocious and they're all boring to sit through. Very terrible script writing. The whole second half of the episodes (called "season 2") is totally filler. Homura and his posse are not in the manga.

A lot of things from the manga aren't kept in the animated version either. Blame it on censorship, I guess. The animated version does not have blood, where the manga version does - and a lot of it + gore(limbs and guts everywhere). Sanzo doesn't really "banish" the demons with his "exorcist gun", he really shoots them to death with his S&W. Hakkai's sister Kanan is not mentioned as such and, for some reason, Jeep is called "Hakuryu". There is a few other differences here and there, as well.

All the same can also be said about it's "sequel" animes: "Saiyuki Reload"&"Saiyuki Reload Gunlock". Its just not worth it to watch them. The movie is also something terrible in it's own league.

If you love to sit through very poor adaptations of manga that are mostly filler in nature, then you'd love this.
If you want to see Saiyuki for what it truly is, then start reading the manga ("Saiyuki" volumes 1-9, followed by "Saiyuki Reload" volumes 1-9* (*so far, is still ongoing).』

(An Entertaining Series But Also Somewhat Annoying As Well)
『If you've seen the series on t.v.(Channel G4 on Cox Digital) you know most of the series is around the four characters Genjo Sanzo(A powerful spiritual priest with a nasty disposition and sarcastic mentality), Cho Hakkai(The most level-headed of the quartet who was once human but became a demon after killing the demon who raped his fiancee and his minions), Sha Gojyo(A half human/demon who is a great ladies charmer, drinker, and gambler but has a sad lonely past because his mother couldn't except his mixed heritage and hated him), and finally Son Goku(A demon whose appetite for food holds no limits he was imprisoned for an unknown crime an was freed by Genjo Sanzo). The short story plot is for some unknown reason the harmony between demons and humans has been shattered and now the demons are attacking humans everywhere as such the spiritual leaders order Sanzo and his friends to find the reason why this is happening and try an restore the harmony between demons and humans. The animation isn't bad as it's pretty clear and sharp but like some reviewers have said it's somewhat annoying when you see the fight scenes. What I mean is when you see them battle there is no actual movement to much but still cut-scenes like if Goku throws a punch it shows as Goku with his character drawn with his fist raised and the next scene his enemy on the his back on the ground but no other actual animation movements. So again don't expect to see any movement in the fight scenes to much but just still shots and the action sounds of the battle instead. Still if you don't mind that to much the rest of the series is still pretty good with a lot of other characters that you come to like through the series as well. The audio was great though I liked who they got to play the quartet for the dubbed version as well as the main villains as well and as always the Japanese voice actors did a superb job as well. So if you like your fighting animes with a touch of humor and drama this series might be a good pick for your collection...』

(over-priced)
『I use to be a big fan of Gensoumaden Saiyuki by reading the whole manga series of it.

To be honest though, the anime is kinda.. boring.

This set it over-priced is what I really want to say.
I got it for about $60 on ebay.』

(Bad Boys saving people?? Ok way not something New)
『No extras so it's to much money for this. i want the extras.Ok I got this series long before it even came out to the US, but waited to make a review till I got the english version to. I loved the japanese version with the english subs. You often have to give it to the japanese voice actors, they can also do a outstanding job on showing the true emotions of the characters. I love this series so much. 4 hot bad a** guys are suppose to save the world and try to stay alive doing so day by day when demons attack. One is the priest and the other 3 are half breed demons. Kwel something worth watching that is funny, action pack and sometimes they show feelings. This series was so funny in english and japanese, but I normally watch in english bein that I can only understand that kind of language.DUH.
1). english version was a 6 out of 10.
I didn't like Hakkai's voice in english it should of been more gentle. the guy sounded to deep and it just didn't work for me, but everyone else was ok, but Sanzo did cuss alot more than in the japanese version. I really didn't feel for the english which was really weird dudes 7 chicks.

2) japanese with subtitles was 9 out of 10.
I loved the japanese version better really. The actors in the japanese version just moved me and drawed me in to everything they said. But they had subs for the english version subs and the japanese version subs. Awesome i thought them putting the real version that was made with the remake version subs was a good idea.

Good job ADV films. Everynow and then you guys can do a good job, but mostly not always and you guys always leave out the extras in the thin packs, like yet again this and even the anime series Getbackers which is pretty good but also recommend it mostly to girls really. It's got alot of hotty bad boy guys again in that series, but it was a good series.

All in all this series is something to watch but if you are a type of person who does both english and japanese languages please do the english first cause you probably get upset too, when you find out your sweet, nice guy with a smile, that his the perfect sweet gentle voice changes in a some what smart a** jerk that has a deeper sound and doesn't have that right feel for the character. Anyways GREAT ANIME and the MUSIC IS AWESOME for the first and second season I thought. I got the entire collections of cds which are hard to find now and rare cds. Check out my other reviews I also write about manga and you might see a cd in there every now and then. Ok later
I really laughed on this series and alot of action. the guys are awesome.』

(one of the many best anime series)
『Saiyuki is probably one of many best series out there after full metal panic and gundam wings. Anybody whose a big anime fan that likes comedy, action and a well thought out storyline would definitely want to put this in their collection. Delivery was good i got it within a couple of days with another list of anime.』
『The Saiyuki franchise upholds the ideal of samurai anime: cool character design, a nonconformist loner lead, and razor-sharp violence. Great value and an exciting new package make this thinpack a must have!』
『The long-running animated seriesSaiyuki(2000) is based on Minekura Kazuya's manga adaptation of the landmark Chinese novel "Journey to the West." But little remains of Cheng'en Wu's original tale of a spiritually powerful monk traveling to India to obtain the Buddhist sutras, attended by three supernatural beings. Instead, rogue monk Sanjo Genjo is dispatched to India prevent the resurrection of the demon-lord Gyumoah by his former mistress, the evil Gyukumen Koushu. Her efforts have destroyed the peace that reigned in Shangri-La, causing the demon inhabitants to attack the humans and vice-versa. Genjo takes three obstreperous demons with him as companions/assistants: chain-smoking womanizer Sha Gojyo; Cho Hakkai, whose pet dragon turns into a jeep; and eternally hungry Son Goku. (TheDragon Ballcontinuity is also loosely based on "Journey.") The quarrelsome quartet travels from place to place, fighting demons and helping people.

Their adventures offer lots of action and slapstick comedy, but little in the way of sustained storytelling or character development. UnlikeInu-Yashaand other picaresque anime adventures, the relationships among the characters inSaiyukiremain fixed. The animation clean-up artists did very sloppy work on this series: Genjo's features change noticeably from scene to scene. But these problems don't deter the show's many fans:Saiyukiran for years in Japan, and spawned three direct-to-video sequels and a theatrical feature. (Rated TV 14 VL, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, profanity, risqué humor, tobacco and alcohol use)--Charles Solomon

(awesome)
『Very fun, very sweet series. Highly recommend. Has some B grade cuss words for no apparent reason. Yoko!!』

(too fun, too short)
『This was first a comment on Tim's review, but it sort of grew...

I don't own the DVD, so I don't think it is fair of me to review the DVD itself; I have no insight into the extras, any easter eggs, or the menu utilities, or any of that. However I watched Tactics when it was broadcast on SciFi channel, and again in a fansubbed version online; from this I'd recommend watching in Japanese with subtitles if your household viewership is old enough to read. The Japanese voice acting and casting are better than the English dubs, in which I find the main character, Kantarou, to be a bit whiny.

This is an anime worth viewing, but a bit slow at first. The first episode is a little obscure to western audiences because it features mythological creatures familiar to Asian audiences but not to westerners, and some early episodes are entertaining but not memorable. The series improves as it goes on.

It is aimed at 11-14 year olds, I think, but is suitable for school age kids. There are some mildly suggestive scenes that will go completely over young-kid's heads, as when in the first episode a girl sucks the finger of the icicle-making goddess in fond reference to sucking on an icicle in the winter, but which to adult eyes looks a bit erotic. There's also a two-part episode (10-11, or is it 11-12?) with a pair of creepy 12 year old girls who shock the (20-something) protagonists by attempting to seduce them. But in general the light-spirited ghost stories are fun and suitable for school age and up.

Woven in small bits throughout the 'fluffy' ghost stores there's a very endearing (filial? romantic? platonic buddy? master-pet? who knows...?) love-story between the two male leads that I think is what keeps adults interested. I think if this latter had been more prominent in early episodes the series might have had more staying power and stayed in production longer.

Kantarou, a human, fights only those yokai who cause trouble for humans, but unlike other monster-hunters his goal isn't to destroy his opponents, but to destroy their hostility (which reminds me a bit of the philosophy from the martial art Aikido). Occasionally he has to exorcise a ghost that clings to this world to push it into its next stage of existence, but his intent is for the ghost's own good. His goal is truce or even friendship between ordinary beings and the spirit world; his religious affiliation appears to be Buddhist.

Kantarou is one of the few characters in anime who reminds me of real people--he likes to sleep in, would rather play than work, is constantly scrambling for money, is basically a good guy but often does the expedient rather than 'what's right'. But all this plays to the comic elements of the series, and sets viewers up for a few surprises when despite his flaws he rises to the occasion. (In one early episode Kantarou says, 'Leave the dangerous stuff to me', to which Haruka somewhat sarcastically agrees. Kantarou more than proves himself later.)

I'm always disappointed by translations of the Japanese word 'yokai', which usually translates as 'monsters' or 'phantoms' but also includes critters that are more like elves and gnomes and such in western myth--they are 'magical' but not necessarily aligned with any 'higher power' or moral standard. More specifically, the character Haruka is a 'tengu', a word translated as 'goblin' in the dubs. He's an enemy of ogres; his name in a prior time was 'ogre-devourer' (onikui); the dubs translate this as 'demon-eater'.

A tengu is a pretty standard critter in Japanese myth, like elves or werewolves in western stories. Unfortunately, the current Japanese vision of a 'tengu' looks a lot like the western vision of an 'angel', so westerners--including western characters inside the story--tend to get a bit confused about what Haruka actually is. A quick read about 'tengu' on wikipedia will get you straight on this.

For the most part, the stories are, essentially, situation comedies. I am reminded of some silly 1950's shows like 'My Favorite Martian' and 'Mr. Ed'.

The biggest problem with this series (other than the annoyingly cloying-cute Suzu)? It is too short; it seems to end just when it has hit its stride. The 25th episode is clearly an attempt to provide some closure to a story which, in anime form, stopped somewhere in the middle. I'm told in Japan the story continues beyond this point via the Manga, but it hasn't yet been released in English; the English version of volume 7 of the tactics Manga is due out in early December and I think that volume will catch up the Manga with the Anime. (Amazon sells the Manga...) I hope there's more after that...』

『Supernatural sleuth and writer, Kantaro Ichinomiya, spends his days fighting demons and writing about his adventures. Accompanied by Haruka, the mysterious Demon-Eating Goblin, and a band of demons and monsters, Kantaro bravely travels the Japanese countryside in search of ghostly mysteries and paranormal adventure』

(It's getting better)
『Let's start this off by saying that I am an anime snob. I really love to watch my anime with sub-titles since dubbing is usually horrible. In the Price of Tennis, Set 2, the dubbing is horrible! More horrible than normal. Of course, this set does allow you to watch with the original japanese voices and subtitles, which I recommend. In the english version, they mispronounce just about everything including some of the names and schools. It is some of the worst dubbing I have ever heard. However, I will go as far to say that this set is better than the first set. In the second set I'm not seeing any missing episodes or scenes that were prevelant in the first set.

The Prince of Tennis is a series that I really love and think that it's worth a watch. It's slightly different than the managa, but both are truly worth a watch. With the second set getting better, I'm going to say that this is worth a buy. The first set was bad, but this set is worth a watch. Plus you get to see Echizen play in his first tournament, which is always fun.』

("Mada mada dane")
『The phrase in the title captures the essence of this series extremely well, especially since it can be interpreted in different ways. If you have watched the anime in Japanese with English subtitles, then you have heard Ryoma Echizen utter this phrase many times, and you will continue to see this in future volumes. The translation used in the anime, which is slightly different from the one in the manga, is "You still have a ways to go". Since Ryoma usually says this when playing a match, this could be interpreted as a sign of believing himself superior to his opponents, which in part is true. However, once one looks beyond Ryoma's superficial cockiness, we discover a character that is much more complex than that, and as the series progresses we get to discover more layers underneath. I have the firm belief that Ryoma is also referring to himself when using "Mada mada dane", encompassing his inability to beat his father and the steps he still needs to take in order to become really strong.

As you can see, this series, which in volume 1 started out OK, but fell a little short of the mark, has improved considerably. In the current volume, there is already a better character development as we get to know more about the Seigaku regulars. The matches against Fudomine for the district finals are exciting and of an appropriate length. The fact that there are side stories besides the actual tennis competition is a definite plus, as is the reminiscing by some characters, like Ryoma's father. This once again, provides us with more information about the environment in which Ryoma grew up and the way in which his father behaved when he was Ryoma's age. Some people may be annoyed by some episodes that go off on a tangent, such as Kaoru's Misfortune (episode 22), but I did enjoy the change of pace and the added humor.

At this point, this series has me a little hooked, since I want to know what will happen in the competitions to come and I have started to appreciate many of the characters involved in the story. Some of the over the top unrealistic tennis still bothers me a little bit, but I think that most people will get used to it pretty quickly. The nice blend of humor and light romance is also a definite plus for the series. As if this was not enough to want to watch the next volume, the last two episodes in this set are exciting and surprising, and I am really looking forward to see what happens next with Ryoma and his friends.』

『Ryoma Echizen and the rest of the Seigaku players enter the district tennis tournament as the school to beat. But an unknown team comes from out of nowhere to put them to the test. During a series of intense matches marked by extreme angles, tough spins, and gutsy play, it starts to look like the favorites will be taken down! Ryoma even gets injured during his grueling match and desperately searches for a way to win. Can he pull it off and keep his reign as The Prince of Tennis?

Episode 23: Here Comes Inui's Deluxe Drink!
Episode 24: Ryoma's Day Off

Episode 26: Seigaku's Strongest Man Part II』

『As the first season of the popularshonen(boy's) seriesPrince of Tennisconcludes, the Seigaku Junior High team is preparing for a city-wide tournament that could propel them to a new level of competition, and 7th grade ace Ryoma Echizen is confronting his personal demons. Much of the story is devoted to a preliminary match with Fudomine Academy, whose team is led by a proudly independent student-coach. Ryoma suffers an injury while playing an underhanded opponent, but recovers using the "Two Sword Style," a technique for switching hands in mid-play developed by his father, legendary pro Nanjiro Echizen. That victory reveals Ryoma's problem: he emulates his father while seeking to escape from his shadow. Team captain Kunimitsu Tezuka pressures Ryoma to develop his own playing style and become the "Pillar of Seigaku." These adventures grow more entertaining as Ryoma's icy facade crumbles and he befriends irrepressible Takeshi "Momo" Momoshiro. In addition to Momo, other team members emerge as interesting secondary characters: They win Ryoma over with their celebratory hijinks in a sushi bar after beating Fudomine. In short, the second collection ofPrince of Tennisis far more enjoyable than the first. (Rated A, suitable for ages 10 and older: minor violence, minor risqué humor, tobacco use)--Charles Solomon

(I'm Listening...)
『Texnholyze is, in short, a dark, allegorical tale that is intended only for the most patient of viewers. With character designs from Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei), producer Yasuyuki Ueda (Ergo Proxy, Hellsing), and screenplay from Chiaki J. Konaka (Serial Experiments Lain, RahXephon), Texhnolyze seems to garner some pretty high expectations for itself. In my opinion, it delivers, but I cannot speak for everyone. You will have to simply watch and see for yourself.

According to an online source, the series' plot can be summarized as follows: The series takes place in the underground city of Lux (or "Lukuss"). The citizens of Lux have come to call it "The City" and treat it as a sentient force. Three factions vie for control of the city: the Organo, a conglomerate with ties to the criminal underworld in the prosthetics business ("Texhnolyze"); the Union, a populist group interfering with Organo's affairs; and Racan, a marauding group of Texhnolyzed youths. There is also the "Class", privileged individuals living in an adjacent sealed city, who are the intermediaries between Lux and the surface, and "Gabe", a village where the historic leaders of Lux live, worshiping Ran, a young prophetess who can see the future. The series follows Ichise, a prize fighter who loses a leg and an arm to satisfy an enraged promoter. As he struggles to accept his new robotic limbs and find a place where he belongs, he witnesses the major changes the city goes through. Now, on to the review.

In terms of the series' animation, I doubt that there are many series that surpass Texhnolyze. The background art definitely does a fantastic job of conveying the dark atmosphere of Lux, and each of the main characters can easily be identified when in a crowd. Ran's character design especially stands out. One of the things that amazed me the most about the series' art was the fact that when one character is speaking, the other characters still blink, and, depending upon what is being said, their facial expressions change as well. Man, were the facial expressions handled well in this series. Ichise's outbursts of rage were especially well-done.

The English dub for this series is, in my opinion, nearly flawless. I have not yet viewed the series in Japanese, and so cannot comment on that. Patrick Seitz, Onishi's VA, is probably the VA with the most spoken lines in the entire series, with Carrie Savage as Ran having probably the fewest (I think she speaks for a total of less than ten minutes in the entire twenty-two episode series). Nonetheless, all of the characters sound like real people, with none of them sounding exaggerated or over-dramatic. No irritating bubbly females or brash, immature male leads in this series.

Texhnolyze has one of the best soundtracks that I have heard in quite some time. The opening theme, "Guardian Angel" by Juno Reactor, is a techno piece that I think reflects very well the series' violence, technological aspects, and insanity, while the closing theme, Gackt's "Tsuki No Uta" reflects the series' ever-present sadness. The closing theme used in the series' last episode, "Walking Through The Empty Age", is perfectly fitting, in both mood and lyric. The background music is appropriate as well, at some times melancholy, and others, haunting and full of energy. Anyone fond of Ergo Proxy's soundtrack is sure to love this one.

Many of the people who view Texhnolyze either complain about or at least comment on the series' pacing. I will admit that the pacing is slow, but as the series progresses, the story gains more momentum, the characters and their relationships with each other become more interesting, and overall, the series becomes more engrossing. As far as the characters go, some complain that Texhnolyze lacks character development, but I must disagree. While very few of the characters in Texhnolyze are given a backstory, you come to know each character's personality through watching how they react to the events that take place throughout the series, and as you watch the main characters come to develop relationships with each other, you come to care for almost all of them. I will admit that because Texhnolyze seems to resemble an allegory, as another reviewer has stated, some of the characters are not explored fully, and are merely there for the purpose of moving the story along.

Some of the themes that are explored in Texhnolyze include loneliness and fear, as well as finding one's place in the world and rejecting the circumstances that life has given to you. I believe that Texhnolyze's real story is one of finding a reason to go on living, regardless of situation, and in the end, Texhnolyze explores the question of what would happen to humanity once we reach our evolutionary end. The series may not be as much of a head-trip as Serial Experiments Lain, a previous series that a few of Texhnolyze's staff worked on, but the fact that it does explore the effects of the city of Lux on each character's mind should be enough to satisfy any potential viewer in search of a good psychologically-based series. I can only hope that future viewers are not turned off by the series' initial pacing.』

(One of my personal favorites)
『Texhnolyze is for people who love great books and great movies that would like to check out anime. And I whole heartily agree with another reviewer that this series is exactly why we watch anime. Yes, the story starts out slow but that is part of the beauty of the series in that not everything is spelled out for you and you add your own thoughts and interpretations to give meaning to what you see on the screen. You never know for sure where the story is going or what the writers are trying to tell you but yet you never feel confused or unsatisfied. Some people have complained about the ending but personally I loved it and I though it served the series well. Not enough stars for this one and could not recommend it higher.』

(Quick Overview)
『Surreal but fascinating. Three sets of people are fighting in a sealed city. A corporation whose employees are augmented, a religious group who believe the augmentation is a terrible sin against humanity, and a rough street gang of free spirits.

But there's another power on the move... and who is that strange girl with the flowers?』

(Bought this one twice)
『What I thought was most endearing about Texhnolyze was it was realistic. It is not Naruto or Dragon ball Z where the characters have god like powers and stamina. The charecters in this series are very mortal, their were times in this series where I was shocked by how visceral the story got. By real, I would say this is unlike any anime I have ever seen, it reminds me of classic books and movies I have read, the pacing is slow, it is more of a drama anime, or one that centralizes a conflict. Like Hemmingways for whom the bell tolls or spieldburgs saving private ryan you get to see a shocking conclussion that embeds itself in your mind. In anime the closest I have seen to it in just pacing would be wolfs rain and lain. I reccomend it but only for hard core anime fans. The guys who watch anime for the eye candy and over done action probably won't like this one.』

(A hypnotic and strange series)
『This is one of those you can watch over and over and still (not know what's happening) find things to admire. Texhnolyze really isn't like any other anime out there, save for Lain (it's by the same people), though the social commentary at times reminds one of Shotoshi Kon's work. There's a lot going on in this one and if you let it work its magic on you, you'll be hooked.』
『Ichise? grief only allows him to enjoy the pain of the fighting pits in the underground city of Lukuss. However, when a gang punishes Ichise by cutting his arm and leg off, his will to live overcomes the odds and attracts the attention of the ruling Organo syndicate that controls the cybernetic Texhnolyze technology that they usually reserve for the elite. Meanwhile, an outsider has come down to the city and, along with a young psychic girl, the dominos are beginning to fall in the seething unrest of the city as their paths slowly intertwine with Ichise?.』

(good anime)
『good anime, the only the i don't like about this set is the fact it doesn't come in a box set. oh and another thing that makes me mad is that i saw this product at FYI for only 26$.』

(WARNING!)
『This is a VERY sweet and affecting series, but at the "end?" of Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi we have essentially the same situation we started with, save that one of the girls discovers/suspects the secret engagement.

Some people prefer an open, even a VERY open ending. The ending here was either a hasty wrap up after the plug was pulled, a purposefully intense tease to make sure we break down the door when part 3 is released, or the creators' admission that they don't have the talent for a follow through.

My whole reason for delving into a 'harem' series was that this seemed like one that wouldn't leave things hanging. It is NOT.』

(Not too tart, not too sweet)
『Ai Yori Aoshi and Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi are some of the better offerings from Pioneer/Geneon and is worth picking up if you happen to find it available. The series closely follows the manga by Kou Fumizuki, though the story and art are slightly simplified for the video. The manga and anime have been mistaken as shojo (manga or anime for girls) but the original story was published in Young Animal, a Japanese magazine for teenage boys. It would be more accurate to bill this series as a realistic harem series as opposed to the fantastical harem stories like Tenchi Muyo or Love Hina. The story centers around Kaoru Hanabishi, a college student, who is struggling to make ends meet after walking away from his position as heir to the Hanabishi marketing empire. One day he meets a traditional Japanese girl who seems totally out of place and lost in the modern world, and he stops to help her. She turns out to be Aoi Sakabura, a childhood friend, who was betrothed to Kaoru when they were both young children, and Aoi has run away from her sheltered home to find Kaoru. As the series progresses, one girl after another joins Kaoru's circle of friends, each of the girls developing strong feeling for Kaoru and unaware of Kaoru and Aoi's love for each other. There is no magical girls in this series, no giant robots blowing things up, it's all about the relationships of the characters with each other. And because of this realism, the series can be a real heartbreaker because, if you read the manga before watching the anime, you realize that all but one of these girls are going to end up brokenhearted.

This is an excellent series for introducing a girl friend or a wife to anime. Be aware, however, that the series may not appropriate for children. Aoi-chan is nude in the opening sequence, Tina is very fond of grabbing women's breast, Taeko-chan provides an excess of panty shots and the youngest character in the harem seems to garner the most partially nude scenes. There are a couple episodes towards the end where Aoi and Kaoru spend the night together and it is suggested that they finally fulfill their love for each other, though nothing is shown. Your kids will see worse on prime time television. There is nothing outright dirty or pornographic, though you might want to view the series before airing it for your children to be safe.

Some people might find Aoi-chan's supposed submissiveness disturbing, but her behavior should be viewed through the lens of Japanese culture. She was raised in fading traditions of ancient Japan and behaves accordingly, and shows unusual strength, for a traditional Japanese girl, in defying the wishes of her father and family and pursuing Kaoru even after their engagement was broken. She is a complex character, giving and selfless, while at the same time being a bit childish and selfish in her singleminded pursuit of Kaoru.

Other characters flirt on edge of becoming cliche harem characters, the klutzy maid, the boorish foreigner, the snobbish rich girl, the aloof and superior older woman, the overly affectionate and innocent Junior High student. Each of them get at least part of their back-story told in an episode, and manage to avoid being stereotyped in the end. If you don't mind the fan service, and can get past Aoi's housewifeyness, this is a good story that you might enjoy, especially if you are tired of magical girls, pretty boys and giant transforming robots.

Like most of Pioneer/Geneon's offerings the extras are rather slim - a couple bonus episodes, creditless openings and closings, and reversible liners with a trifle more risque picture on one side than another. The anime series left me with one unanswered question - the opening sequence of Enishi shows a young woman holding a blue haired infant girl for a brief instance. This woman and baby don't show up in any of the episodes or in the manga, which makes me wonder what she was doing in the opening of the show. Perhaps Enishi was intended to be a longer series, like the first story arc, but was shortened for various reasons, after the opening sequence was filmed, and the unused characters were not removed.』

(Nice SHOW!!!!!!)
『This is a really nice show. I brought disc 1 many years ago when it initially came out and was only able to watch 1 or 2 episodes. To be quite honest anime hasnt really done anything amazing lately to get me HOOKED on any new series. Sailor Moon back in the mid to late 90's was what got me really hooked when it debuted on the WB Channel 11 at around 6am in the morning (which is way to early). Of course at that time anime was very limited on US TV. I havent been ADDICTED to any series the way i have Sailor Moon for many years. Anyways back to this show, i recently got free time to actually sit down&get away from my hectic life to watch more then 2 episodes. I finished the entire 1st disc&was pretty impressed with the dubbing&storyline etc. This show reminds me alot of Ranma 1/2. Then i went on Amazon and found the complete series was on sale for $39.00 with the original price being 60.00. Total deal!!! You get all 8 dics of the series which includes season 1 and season 2 over 800 min of anime. Many years ago if you wanted over 800 mins worth of anime you'd be shelling out hundreds of dollars to keep getting each disc of the series at 4 episodes per disc. The only reason this got 5 stars and not 4 was cause the price was such a bargain. Thank goodness for places like Amazon which offers nice sale prices on their items or else id have to pay full retail price. $39.00 is really a snag which amounts to $5.00 per DVD. The only complaint is it didnt come in a box set thin pak format. The set was just the actual 8 DVDs that were indiviually released. Would of been nice to have a nice outer box to put them in. I cant wait to get home and finish up the series.』

(Really great!)
『This anime is so well made that you wouldn't have to take your head off trying to understand the story. The drawings are nice and they tell the story of each one of the characters. Ok, I've watched this anime in both versions (English and Japanese). For those who have only watched anime in english, this anime is nice. But those who enjoy watching anime in japanese will find the english version a little weird. But overall it's a good anime that you'll find enjoyable.』

(Solid state Society)
『This is another classical Ghost in the shell show. Highly recommended to all you Shell Geeks, (Being one myself).
Section 9 is under attack and only the major can sort it all out.
Cheers...............Shane』

(Weird)
『The listing for this is weird. The pictures are for GITS SAC 2ng Gig, but the listing is Solid State Society.』

(GHOST IN THE SHELL:SOLID STATE SOCIETY)
『The film GHOST IN THE SHELL: SOLID STATE SOCIETY Is worth every dime I payed for it.This film does not leave the viewer in a lurch,on this cyberpunk thrill ride there is no breaks,or turn signals.Ladies and gentlemen if you are hunting for a serious film that gives you action, drama, suspence, and indeed that unique blend of humor that all of us G.I.T.S. fans tend to enjoy, well you've come to the right place. The plot is really well laid out directly from the start. It would be unkind of me to reveal anymore of the film,as I do not want to give any of it away, but will leave you with this, the major and Batau as always go full blast into all they do, and the humor between those 2 is as fast as the bullets they fire.

Have a great day ladies and gentlemen, and regards to Team Amazon. Thanks for getting my order out for G.I.T.S-SSS it arrived rather quickly, much to my delight and extreme satisfaction.

(Be prepared to have a DVD that may not work.)
『The first disc that I ordered went to the title screen, but couldn't play the movie. The second disc played, but had temporary trouble with Ch 15. When I watched it through on the second one, the story was great and I would love to buy this. I have contacted the companies that make this movie about the issue. I will buy at a later date when they fix the problem.』

(Ghost In the Shell Solid State Society Is Good and Worth Buying)
『I liked solid state society, and I think that if you like the stand alone complex series, you will like solid state society as well. It is more like the 2nd gig than the original stand alone complex series. The quality is great. It is rather convoluded though, as ghost in the shell can be at times, but I would say its no more complex than 2nd gig was, and for the most part, it is an interesting cyberpunk action movie. I strongly recommend getting the soundtrack. It comes with the steel book edition (only $1 more on amazon when I bought it). Yoko Kanno's music is absolutely fantastic. This soundtrack is much more in the classical genre, but there are also some good techno/pop tracks.』
『Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow and directed by Kenji Kamiyama GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX takes viewers to a futuristic society where technology has saturated citizens' daily lives. Along with the new technology comes new types of crime that exploit it but female cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team of police Section 9 devote their lives to chasing criminals both on land and in cyberspace. In this complete collection of episodes from the epic show's second season (also known as 2nd Gig) Major Motoko Husanagi and Section 9 continue to battle terrorists in the actual world and in cyberspace. This season gives a new spin to Masamune Shirow's popular concept by combining the talents of directors Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kamiyama and the animators at Japanese studio Production I.G.System Requirements:Length: 360 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ANIMATION/ANIME Rating: PG-13 UPC: 669198252679 Manufacturer No: 25267』
『Major Kusanagi and the rest of Public Security Section 9 hit the ground running as the second season ofStand Alone Complex(2004) begins: Their new adventure centers on a complex mystery even more dangerous than the case of the Laughing Man. Terrorist incidents linked to the mistreatment of Asian refugees after World War IV threaten to ignite a powder keg in Japan. Kusanagi, Batou, and even Chief Aramaki chafe when they're drafted to protect Prime Minister Kayabuki from would-be assassins. But the threats to the government are linked to the Individual Eleven, a cell that recalls the May 15th Incident. (On May 15, 1932, a group of junior naval officers and army cadets assassinated Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi, ensuring that power would remain in the hands of the militarists.) The members of the Individual Eleven--except for Hideo Kuze, their charismatic leader--commit mass suicide in a bloody spectacle that recalls the theatrical death in 1970 of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Kuze's campaign to win political freedom for the refugees grows increasingly violent, involving suicide bombers, Russian mobsters selling stolen plutonium, and strained relations between Japan and an Imperial America that is trying to reassert its military dominance in the face of economic weakness. And what role does the devious, hideously scarred intelligence officer Kazundo Gohda play in these actions? The Tachikoma robots speculate that as they are abandoning collective consciousness and developing individuality, a dependence on the Net is leading humans in the opposite direction. That trend makes people more vulnerable to cyber-viruses involved in the plot--unless Section 9 acts in time. Most of the adventures take place in bleak, gray and brown settings, which contrast effectively with the bright, colorful cyberworld the Major and the Tachikomas visit.S.A.C.--2nd Gigcontinues the tight plotting, dynamic action sequences, and interesting character relationships that made the series a hit.
