So I would say if you aren't that uber anime nerd, just cringe your teeth past the poor acting and really watch the story. I really liked it and the fact that it's not $120 a series makes it a really good buy. You should also check out some of Clamps other works (like Tsubasa) because they do throw in some interesting little things into their story. The reason I don't give this a 5 is because I think even if though it's really good, it's not the series that everyone can automatically get into (I apologize to the anime viewers that eat classic anime for breakfast, lunch, and dinner) because the dialogue if you want a sample it's stuff like, "HIKARU!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" if someone is injured or "You were my best friend, I can't believe you would turn against me. The series is really good and the ending is very deep...I can't wait till I have the money to buy the second season..This set has both the dubbed and the japanese with subtitles version and interviews with the american cast including the actress who plays Mokona who did both the Japanese and the American versions...I had a bit of trouble playing the Omake endings and an alternate theme songs on the special features area I would click on it and my dvd player would stop but that's really the only downside I saw. Mokona was what attracted me to this series since I had enjoyed him in Tsubasa Resevior War Chronicles the manga..and yes Mokona is a boy...however in this series there is only the white Mokona and his entire language is pu! There is also a bonus disc containing two interviews with the Japanese director and someone else who I have yet to watch. Overall this series is wonderful and worth the money and will make you keep watching to the end! This is not your run of the mill anime series. First, you must be patient with MKR...its begins rather slow and gives little or no background about the characters. It is also emotional. I find that refreshing, because many anime series are all about panty shots and robots...ie MOLDIVER. The animation is NOT upto par with clamp's manga, or even cardcaptor sakura. The animation reminds me of NADIA or something from the late 80's. But the facinating and complex storyline pulls you in. And when the mecha finally shows up (The RUNE GODS), its Awesome. It is not as detailed as Gundam, but apparently, the ladies get hit whenever the mecha gets hit. Yep, there's a bit of blood in this series (would have made a perfect show for FOX and they wouldn't have to butcher it like they did Escaflowne). That what it reminded me of, with the robots, the girls and emotion of the show, Escaflowne. There are no panty shots (the potential is there) and the violence is as mild as Macross. I don't even know why its 13 and up. There's body lines (ie Sailor Moon), but no profanity and no overtly sexual details. The end of the series WILL MAKE YOU GO BUY MKR2. By the way...Rayearth is Hitomi's Rune God. He doesn't show up until the end of the series. The Dubbed V.A.'s and the opening and closing songs dubbed and in its original Japanese is high pitched and annoying. I got so emotionally connected in the series...The ending made me angry...I found myself yelling at the characters like they could hear me. Dragon Ball never made me do that. The series would be directed by popular 80's anime director Katsuhito Akiyama ("Sol Bianca", "Thundercats", " Gall Force","Bubblegum Crisis"), screenplay by Yuuji Hosono ("Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor", "Ray" and "Trinity Blood"), series composition by Atsuhiro Tomioka ("Samurai 7, "Vandread", "Eat-Man" and "Berserk"), character designs by Chizuko Kusakabe ("Trouble Chocolate") and mechanical designs by Shuichi Hara ( who worked on "Armitage: Dual Matrix" and "Solty Rei"). "Pumpkin Scissors" takes place during a time where war has ravaged the country. But a ceasefire has ended the war between the Royal Empire and the Republic of Frost. But since the cease fire, the country is not in the best of shape. The Empire is now plagued with starvation, crime, pestilence and even the soldiers have become bandits. With corruption also residing in the ranks of the military, a division called Imperial Army State Section III was created. Section III is also known as "Pumpkin Scissors". A name given to the group by 2nd Lt. Alice L. Mavin. As way of the pumpkin being the layers of corruptness being trimmed by the blade of a scissor. The series focuses on the Section III team and their mission of helping people and eliminating the corruption in their own military but also helping the public in other areas who have suffered from corruption. But within the Section III is a mysterious soldier named Corporal Oland who is a member of the secret anti-tank group known as "The Invisible 9 who seems to get them out of a jam when the going gets tough. Section III consists of the following individuals: Captain Hunks - The commanding officer who is rather calm, always smoking and gives out the orders to the team. 2nd Lt. Alice L. Mavin - Leads the team on their missions and also a member of the royal family. But is dedicated to her job and passionate about the goals of Section III. Always hot tempered when angered, she carries a short sword. Corporal Randel Oland - The mysterious soldier known for his height and his facial scars. When things get tough for Section III, Oland turns on his blue lamp and becomes a member of the "Invisible 9. A man who is vicious in battle and gets the job done with his 13mm anti-tank gun. Able to take on massive hits and injuries while in this mode. A secret military group of individuals that took on tanks. Not much is known about the "Invisible 9 but there members of the Section III accept him without asking any questions about his past. Warrant Officer Martis - Graduated on the top of the Academy but transferred to Section III to uncover corruptness in his former unit. Warrant Officer Oreldo - The playboy who seems more interested in drinking and women but the cool, clever and resourceful member of the group. Sergeant Major Lili Stecchin - An aid to Captain Hunks who works in the office and is responsible for the dog named Mercury (the messenger for Section III). "Pumpkin Scissors - The Complete Series" features 24 episodes on 4 DVD's. Here is a spoiler-less summary of each episode: DISC 1: * Episode 1 - The Invisible 9 - it's merely an introduction to the characters but how many soldiers have turned corrupt and using tanks to hurt people. In this case, shooting a chemical weapon against the people in the village, leaving it to PUMPKIN SCISSORS to obtain the antidote. * Episode 2 - War Relief Unit - Episode 2 features a corrupt noble who is willing to give a lot of money to a resident who can survive a game of cat and mouse. In rough times, many villagers take part in the game to hopefully win the money but because the noble uses a tank to catch the villagers, no villager has survived the game. Section III is called to stop this man but instead, the team are forced to be part of the game as mouse. * Episode 3 - For That is a Precious Thing - Section III must convince a group of villagers to work on a tunnel. * Episode 4 - The Cracked Portrait - Martis is suspicious about Oland and does his own investigation on him. * Episode 5 - Shallow-Minded Men - Oreldo learns from Martis about his suspicions about Oland being a member of the "Invisible 9. * Episode 6 - A Fruitful Time - Oreldo finds an abandoned baby and Section III looks for the mother. DISC 2: * Episode 7 - The One Who Leads and the One Who Follows - Alice goes to meet her fiance, while the three go to look for squandered supplies. * Episode 8 - Burn in the Snowfields - Section III is given a mission to go out in a snow area to make a delivery. * Episode 9 - The Woman in the Morning Mist - Oreldo helps a woman deal with her fiance. * Episode 10 - Pumpkins and Scissors - Stecchin explains to Oland how Section III got their "Pumpkin Scissors" name. * Episode 11 - The Quiet Quickening - Alice is kidnapped and the kidnappers want her to publicize documents about a top secret military group known as "Invisible 9. * Episode 12 - Unseen Pain - Someone has taken the "Invisible 9 documents, now people are ending up dead and the Section III team are in the middle of all of it. DISC 3: * Episode 13 - Crude but Elegant - Martis must accompany a princess for the day and protect her. * Episode 14 - The Flame Still Burns - Section III takes on a group of drug dealers. * Episode 15 - Decisions Run Astray - While Section III takes on drug dealers, Oland confronts an enemy who may be part of the same mysterious group that he was once part of. * Episode 16 - The One Who Slashes - Section III continues their fight against the drug dealers but the military has sent out Section I. Leaving Alice to take them on alone while Oland and Martis go after Hans. * Episode 17 - The Darkness that Cannot Be Saved - Oland confronts Hans and Alice continues her fight against the Section I soldiers. * Episode 18 - A Small Military Power - Stecchin tries to finds a way to make Oland happy once again. DISC 4: * Episode 19 - A Sweet Trap - Section III distributes food to the homeless, while Alice attends a ball. But Section III doesn't know that the commoners have planned to murder the nobles at the ball. * Episode 20 - Enter the Performers - A furious crowd of commoners invade the ball that Alice has attended and want blood. * Episode 21 - The Puppet and the Idol - Alice challenges the Marquis bodyguard who is an expert with a machete, meanwhile Oland must take on the other. For the most part, the animation is action-based and the artistic backgrounds tend to reveal the war-torn country. Character designs by Chizuko Kusakabe ("Trouble Chocolate") and mechanical designs by Shuichi Hara ( who worked on "Armitage: Dual Matrix" and "Solty Rei") are well-done and it's a series that focuses on a core group of characters but features a lot of characters as the group tends to visit villages that are in need of help. So, you see a lot of anguish and fears in the face of the commoners and of course during battle, the fight scenes are also well-done and enjoyable to watch. But also striking are the violent imagery depicted on the animation and design of the characters of the "Invisible 9 group. Definitely cool character designs and artistic style. As for audio, "Pumpkin Scissors" is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and Japanese stereo. Dialogue is clear and understandable through the front and center channels but with all the action, I was hoping to hear a more immersive soundtrack especially coming from the surrounds. But the series is primarily front and center-channel driven and felt that my best setting was to set my receiver to all channels on stereo. As for the voice acting, I watched the series in both English and Japanese and both feature solid voice acting. The main difference is that the English version tends to change a few things in dialogue and also utilize more profanity and familiar Western terminology for the English dub. Also, Oland sounds a bit more oafish in the English dub but in a way it does make sense. But for the most part, I felt that the voice acting was well done and enjoyed both vocal tracks. Subtitles are only in English. I suppose I was a bit skeptical with the references to a pumpkin and scissors on the cover did not exactly generate any enthusiasm on my part but after watching the entire series, I can tell you that the series is definitely exciting, clever and for the most part, highly entertaining! I enjoy the series because the "PUMPKIN SCISSORS" are always looked at as an underdog military/intelligence group that is not too important to the empire. But the group shows its strength by tackling corruption and accomplishing missions which are not easy by any means. Lt. Alice L. Malvin is quite interesting because she is a daughter from a noble family but instead of living a life as a noble, she learns how fortunate she is to have food on her table but at the same time, because of her beliefs, she wants to see right with the people in the ravaged villages who feel that they have no voice when it comes to the Empire and Alice wants to be their voice and really wants to help people. But what is interesting is that you see her character develop especially when you get to the final seven episodes. She's a changed person and her beliefs start to change. "Pumpkin Scissors" also shows the side of post-war and how villages all over have been destroyed or people left to die by starvation and sickness. It was really good to see how animators captured the anguish of those who are suffering. I did feel that the humor at times felt a bit kooky especially when you enjoy the violence and the action sequences for the series and some episodes go from dark but then you'll have a character like Oreldo flirting with a woman or cracking a joke. But I really like the characters in the series. Anna has a pure heart of wanting to help the people, as does the corporal who despite seems to be lost because all he did was kill the enemies during the war and now that there is no war, trying to evaluate what peace is about and also trying to figure out his existence and his part of being in a group like Section III. The show also does a great job in focusing on character development and granted there are not many characters on the Section III team, but you see each and every one of them overcome adversity someway and also with the help of each other. An enjoyable series that is full of action, intrigue and suspense. A good balance of violence and a touch of zany and kooky humor. From start to finish, you'll find yourself feeling that "Pumpkin Scissors" is indeed a hidden gem amongst many anime titles being released right now. But it's a series that is worth checking out. Such is the case with Pumpkin Scissors; a show with a title that seems made up of two completely unrelated nouns. I mean could have it worked just as well if it were called Zucchini Shears, Squash Clippers, or Cucumber Nose Hair Trimmers? Guess we'll never know but who cares? The fact is, as indicated by the insignias on the character's uniforms, Pumpkin Scissors was indeed an intentional collaboration of symbols used to identify a certain military brigade within a surprisingly rich tale. This anime release represents but another gem created by Gonzo that Funimation wisely picked up in their collaborative deal with ADV Films. Labeling this specific release The Complete Series, it contains episodes 1-24 of the show across 4 dvds. Packaged within a pair of thin packs (each holding two discs) within a very nicely decorated cardboard sleeve, the total runtime comes in at 600 minutes-even. The show wears an appropriate TV 14 rating due to its grandiose themes of violence and militaristic operatives. There is no nudity or particularly offensive language, and some sequences, though violent in nature, seem to avoid indulging in gore. Language options consist of both the original Japanese dialog track (stereo) or English dub (Dolby 5.1 Surround) and the choice of English subtitles for either vocal track. Extras are limited to texless songs and two crops of Funimation trailers. The story goes something like this: We pick up at the conclusion of a long and grueling war between the Empire and the Republic. It's a period where a forced peace treaty struggles to find its footing and soldiers, who were accustomed to the thralls of battle, now find themselves on war relief duty in lands that have been ravaged by battle. We follow the young female character Alice, an idealist heir to nobility and Second Lieutenant in Military Intelligence Section 3 (aka Pumpkin Scissors). While she's expected to obey commands and do things "by the book", our protagonist makes it her own personal mission to fight for what's right, even if it means taking out rogue soldiers who refuse to follow the peace treaty or exposing corrupt, power-abusing nobles. The show is an interesting blend of action and strategy and its pacing makes no apologies for failing to favor one element over the other. The themes are quite ambitious, some might even say too ambitious, but the major story arc is broken up pretty evenly by the minor day to day trials and tribulations of the characters involved. Credit is definitely due to the show's artists and production teams for managing to combine bright, clean visuals and cutesy moments with an underlying sense of ominous that builds without drawing too much attention to itself. Comic relief is sprinkled about to break up the potential monotony of what boils down to a brash female soldier who decides to reveal the corruption of the power-crazed nobles who dictate her society. In the end, a whole plethora of minor battles and grand conflicts serve as the catalyst to reveal the mysteries surrounding a covered-up super soldier program (kind of like a bunch of Captain Americas with eerie lanterns) known as the Invisible Nine. This is one of few shows out there that can genuinely boast the ability to appeal to a pretty broad fan base. Some will find attraction to the military-themes, antiquated technology, and action sequences while others will just as successfully cling to the character development of the interesting and likable cast. Finally, there could just as likely be a devotion to the visual style and crisp animation presented here as it's definitely got the type of class that Gonzo seemed to be able to extract time and time again in their works. The vocal tracks are just about equally solid in either language option. One would suspect that the depth of talent in the Japanese track would overshadow the efforts of the English dub but the fact is that each take of the script has its own merit. Occasionally it even sounds as though the English actors may have had a little more fun getting into the characters than their Japanese counterpart! In all, Pumpkin Scissors could very well earn the award for the strangest anime title to reach our shores but the material itself is solid enough to warrant serious consideration. Some may argue that the pacing is just a tad bit inconsistent and sure, there are episodes that tend to drag on with little overall plot progression, but in the end a rich story is cleverly weaved here through a group of honest characters unwilling to accept a corrupt society. A majority of the bits and tangents that pop up along the way ultimately lead to a satisfying conclusion that's worth the effort of following along (even if little of what's happening makes sense at the time). "Gunslinger Girl" just looked phenomenal and action packed. On the back of one of the DVD's it said "Anime's answer to `The Professional'..." by Rob Bricken, a reviewer at Anime Insider. Needless to say this definitely caught my attention. "The Professional" is one of my favorite films with an absolutely phenomenal story. "Gunslinger Girl" definitely poses a very controversial concept, but that's what makes it very good. The show takes place in Italy and primarily centers on the story of a little girl named Henrietta. The premise is based around a top secret government organization that is part of the Social Welfare Agency. It's not about giving children new homes; it's about giving terminally ill patients a new chance at life. The one catch is that, regardless of the fact they're children, they have to become super assassins for the government. The children are given new cybernetic bodies to accomplish these seemingly inhuman feats for children. However, despite these enhancements they are still children and they need extensive training, as well as re-learning how to use their new bodies. Although not everything on a girl is replaced as we later learn with Triela. Each girl is teamed up with a handler (together called a fratello (siblings)) who is responsible for training her in combat and supervising her on missions. This is where that whole line of ethics becomes heavily blurred. I know some people will dismiss the idea of training children to be assassins as just plain wrong. But the fact remains that without the agencies interference they would be dead. Not to mention these super assassins are fighting against terrorists that would further harm other innocents. It's not like they're taking little girls that could live normal lives, they are taking those that are already damaged beyond repair. The only part that makes me curious is the girls undergo something called "conditioning" to increase their obedience and docility to their handlers. It also makes them forget their tragic past. They really didn't get into the details of what they do or what its effects are. The handlers have the ability to choose how much conditioning a girl receives, which brings us into the ethics of their trainers. Henrietta is the girl we get to know best, along with her handler José. You really do like this pair, because they seem to compliment each other quite well. José treats Henrietta like a little sister and truly does care about her feelings. He wants her to be happy in her new chance at life. Not all trainers are like José though. Jean, on the other hand, is very demanding of Rico, but Rico seems to deal with this personal strife better than some could imagine and she's fiercely loyal to Jean. Triela and her handler have sort of an understanding, she's the oldest and most self sufficient, but she still wants her handler to be proud of her and he's happykeeping his distance. Not everything works out this well for a fratello, because in the case of Angelica and Marco things are not going so well. There seems to be some serious memory flaws because of the implants (Angelica was the prototype) and Marco has a very difficult time dealing with helpingthis child overcome her problems and then her forgetting. The worst case scenario is probably Elsa and her handler. He is so uncaring and cold to her that it just feels wrong; to him she is just a tool. You intrinsically know that regardless of the fact that they are cyborgs, they are still children and need nurturing. They need to feel like they're accomplishing something. Most of the girls are very grateful for a new chance at life and genuinely enjoy what they do. They even know they have been conditioned and sometimes question whether it's their brain washing talking or it's the real them. As you can see I thought the story concept was brilliant. You go through all kinds of episodes dealing with different missions and different teams. Primarily we see Henrietta and her story, but you get to see what happens with all the other girls I mentioned, as well as Claes, who has a very interesting story. You see their handlers deal with the problems of having to essentially raise children and how they go about doing this. A lot of them can't treat their girls like any other weapon, it's tough to do that, especially when it speaks and you know there is a conscious mind behind the words! I do wish there was more of a central story to the whole series though. Watching the missions and getting to know the characters was really great, but at the end it just ended. There wasn't a huge blow out ending or anything. It makes me hope that they write another series in this universe with these girls, this one just feels so introductory. I thought this was a very good series and I would definitely recommend it to just about anyone. Just don't expect it to be all action, like I had initially thought. It really is more like "The Professional" when I think about it because that dealt a lot with the issues and emotions of training a child in the art of assassination. One thing I do commend "Gunslinger Girl" for doing is making all the weapons real. It's funny because I recognized a lot of the guns from the video game Counter Strike, so it makes me wonder if there was some influence there! In the end I have to say my favorite character was Triela. I really thought she was the most interesting character in some ways because it felt like she had the most personality and she was also playing the big sister role. I do wish this series delved more into the technology, because they referenced that the cyborgs lived a shorter life-span, but they never say how short that is, or if they are working on technology to increase that. In the end I am left with a lot of questions and wanting more episodes, so maybe someone will read this and make more in the spirit of this first installment. In reality, it's an agency on the fringe of technology. They give terminal patients another shot at life using cybernetic implants. This conditioning process then shapes the patient into an efficient machine for handling all of the government's dirty work. Sum of the Story (No spoilers) A special agency was formed to combat criminals and commit political murders. The agency was called Social Welfare Agency. This is not your regular agency, instead of using well trained officers, they use cybernetics girls. Interesting? The agency will pick little girls who has a tragic accident or their parents died. After the girl is in custody, The handler will name the girl. The agency will take them, brainwash them, put mechanical parts in the body, train them and making the girls fearless killing assassins. The cyborg girls go through intense training involving shooting practice, cleaning the guns, hand to hand training. Once the training is done, The girls live a normal life like nothing has happen. There are five main characters in the story. The characters are Henrietta, Claes, Triela, Angelica, and Rico. Each girl has a "handler". The handler is a male that commands them to either kill a person, practice their skills of shooting and combat. Also tells them whether to protect them. The girls go through training to become the perfect assassin. Once the girls have a mission, the agency have the girls do their "dirty work". The girls are assign to a mission that they need to perform. They have to blend in with the crowd and not make any mistakes. Once they have found thier target, The handler will order the girl to shoot the target at the right moment. The anime doesn't really have a plot. A short plot will be reveal, resolved and then a another plot. The setting takes place in Italy, modern day. The graphics are great and the sound is great. The graphics are amazing, It's 16:9 color which is really good. The color has dark and light shades which gives the characters real look to them and the background. The images of Italy also play great for Gunslinger Girl. The sound of shooting, reloading, cars, people and the music are great. It feels like your watching it first hand and you are their to witness it. It's better if you have surround sound while watching the anime. It's still good if you don't have surround sound. The music also sets the moods for the anime. Whether it's a huge gun fight, or an emotional moment. The detail of the characters is very good and the personality of the characters also shows. The anime shows the personality of the characters right away and the anime also explain what roles they play in the anime. Gunslinger Girl also has a twist to it and an questionable ending. The opening theme and ending theme also stays true to the anime. I would rate this for teens (15+). There is alot of blood and alot of shooting involve. No nudity or sexual content. It's not like Elfen Lied or Divergence Eve (which i recommend watching). The story will involve present and past, so you can watch how the characters develop and also how they got to the agency. I was kinda disappointed on how it ended but some animes want you to question and guess how it ended. I wished it didn't end and it kept on continuing. If, on the other hand, you're a long-standing fan of the Lodoss universe, then this review isn't going to be very useful in evaluating whether or not you want to buy this box set and I refer you to the several other wonderful reviews here that review this box set from that perspective, as opposed to an outsider's perspective. Having said all that, if you are new to the Lodoss mythos, I think it's safe to say that this boxed series isn't going to convert you into a fan. Without mincing words, the series is just plain dull, and that's not an accusation I level lightly. There's a *massive* amount of "filler" here - the starting credits and ending credits alone seem to take up more screen time than the actual 'episodes' (and you can't skip past them because each episode is a single DVD chapter, so you have to fast forward each time which, believe me, gets old fast). Once you get into the actual episode, there's a beginning recap each time, an ending teaser, and a bizarre "second half of the show" that features cartoonish, child-like versions of the main characters making silly puns in voices so shrieky and high-pitched I was afraid our windows would shatter. I usually prefer English dubbing, but we had to switch to the original Japanese for these "second half" sections, because the voices were slightly more bearable. And the jokes aren't even funny or amusing - they're just puns in Japanese that no longer make any sense in English. So having established that the *actual* episode is, in fact, criminally short, is it at least good? No. The storyline over the entire four discs is always a derivative, D&D-style "travel here and kill bad guys". The bad guys are *never* complex or interesting in any way - with the exception of Ashram, they are all cartoonishly evil jerks who slaughter the innocent for fun and oppress their own troops. (Ashram, the one 'complex' villain is 'complex' by virtue of being moody and indecisive.) The good guys, by contrast, are all good, all the time. King Kashue of Flaime, for example, could have been an interesting personality - he's a 'good' king, but he still desires power and 'a unified Lodoss' at least as much as Ashram does, and some interesting points could have been explored there, but they never are because good guys are all perfect gods in human form and whatever decisions they make are for our own good. Ergo, Ashram's unified Lodoss idea is bad because he's evil and Kashue's unified Lodoss idea is good because he's virtuous. Brand new characters teleport mysteriously into the action, often when cannon fodder is needed, and character motivation will change radically whenever the plotline calls for it, so ultimately all the characters feel like interchangeable pawns in an extremely dull chess game. Storylines are often simplified in order to make room for other things, but Lodoss' utterly derivative story seems to have been simplified and cut in order to make way for dull voice-overs. Despite the subject matter, there is a dearth of actual action, and what action is here is dull and badly animated. Battles are fought by stringent D&D-style rules (one group of sorcerers laments that they can't go into battle without at least one warrior to protect them while they cast spells), but the animators couldn't be bothered, so "battles" consist of close-up shots of a magic user casting a spell ("Manna of all creation..."), with a follow-up shot of their victim grimacing. Sword battles are rendered by drawing two fighters facing each other, and every five or six seconds they raise their swords and bring them back down again jerkily - I've seen animation by amateur Photoshop users that was more detailed than this. If you can forgive the simplistic storyline and the battles being too few, too short, and too amateurish, you'll probably find that the characters are equally simple and poorly fleshed out. Aside from the 100% good / 100% evil dilemma, characters are frustratingly stupid at times (like when everyone fails to savvy up to the fact that if there is only ONE sacrificial virgin that is acceptable as a sacrifice to bring about the apocalypse and if it's crucial that she MUST remain a virgin, then maybe the best answer to avoiding the apocalypse is less 'traipse all over creation avoiding capture' and more 'spend some quiet time with that young knight she keeps mooning over') and are more often than not saved - for no reason - by ridiculous deus ex machina conventions ('The king dragon saved us! You remember - *the* king dragon! The one we've never mentioned before and will never mention again? That one!'). Even the voice acting is terribly done, with several characters sounding flat and the dialogue so badly inflected that I began to wonder if the "English" dubs were performed by people who didn't understand what they were reading - it's cringe worthily bad. When it comes to anime and D&D, I have ridiculously low standards, because I enjoy the genres enough that pretty much anything will please me. There are a lot of things Lodoss could have done to draw me in, despite it's faults - if the character had been more complex, I could have forgiven the terrible battles; if the battles had been rendered better, I could have ignored the simplistic storyline; if the storyline had been longer and better characterized, I could have forgiven the terrible, flat voice acting and the shrill "second half" insanity. All together, though, I simply could not enjoy Lodoss War and was extremely relieved when we finally finished it. If you're a huge fan of Lodoss, this will probably feel like a decent tribute to a great mythos that you enjoy, but if there's no nostalgia here to lighten the faults a bit, you likely won't enjoy this at all.』 (I unbiasedly liked this one.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I actually watched this one (Heroic Knight) "out-of-order" (having bought it BEFORE the original Record of Lodoss War). I genuinely liked it, and feel it stands well on its own two feet. I partly wanted to watch it on its own because I didn't want to prejudice or bias my review by having seen the "prequel" first (some folks had griped that it was different from or not as good as the original). IE, I didn't want to have anything to compare it to, or for it to have to "best in mortal combat." If taken on its own, and under its own power, it appears to be internally consistent, has decent animation. Though I like the opening credits animation BETTER than the animation of the series itself. If they'd used animation similar to opening credits throughout the series I'd have LOVED the series. Honestly the opening credit artwork is pretty cool. But just on its own merits I liked the series. It looks and feels like a fantasy epic. Perhaps not AS sweeping as some others out there. There were a few bad voice acting moments in the opening episodes (episode2, especially, with Parn, if I recall right), but that clears up by the time the series really gets going. So I won't dock them for it. Call it opening night jitters. I'd say that if you like "fantasy anime," this one's decent. Haven't seen many to compare it to yet. But as I said, on its own merits it's pretty good, for what it is. This review will be simple, and to-the-point. First the good, then the bad. The good: This arrived in GREAT SHAPE, and arrived early! The series comes on 4 DVDs, and the packaging presentation is very professional. The price, at $34.95, was a GREAT value (And even BETTER VALUE when you get the OVA boxed set of 13 episodes in the same order, for under $80!). Deedlit and Parn, they are great charachters to watch, with great voice actors, they are always good... The bad: Not ENOUGH Deedlit and Parn...what a shame...this series should have been about D and P with more adventures, until the very end... ALl of a sudden, on Disc B, all the charachters voices are changed! And their actors are terrible to the originals! Also, all of a sudden, the main cast completes their quest all too early, then switches to a new rag tag group you have never met before (except seeing Spark as a child earlier on...) Deedlit and Parn never kiss, after going through all of that together, not even one kiss...this is a serious lack of closure for me, as a big fan of Lodoss War. The new crew that takes over after Parn and the others is pretty annoying at first, especially that punk Spark. Man, I hate his charachter... Compared to the OVA, the animation, while not terrible, suffers in the quality department. I hated the ending, it should have been about Deedlit and Parn, not Spark and his group! In spite of the faults, the incredible value elevates this to FOUR stars out of FIVE. To think, fo years, they sold this same set for nearly $130! Take my advice, wait for the series to lose popularity before buying it, that is what I am doing with Wolf's Rain...once it is $50 or below, I will get my copy of it! I watched and compared it to the original Record of Lodoss War, and I was just surprised how off the series is in a way. Personally, I should have bought the imported version of the series, since they're much cheaper and the US release isn't even worth it much. In a way, I regret buying the US release, but don't get me wrong, I still liked the series, although the Remastered Edition of the original Record of Lodoss is much better in detail and animation. The only things wrong with this series and the previous one are some of the bad english dubbing (Man, if you listen to Prince Reonna or whatever his name was in this series, you'll get a good laugh on how pathetic, and mismatched his voice-over really is; picture a large, broad blonde man speaking like as if he was a short or rather weak man).』 (re: Avoid entirely) ![]() 『I just watched this with friend and family, and we're all very confused. None of us are constant anime followers, but we aren't novices either. The story is simple enough, but there are considerable loopholes and bad characters. Despite what the editorial reviewer from Amazon says, King Kashue does NOT idolize Parn, it's PARN who "idolizes" Kashue. Kashue is fond of Parn, but does not idolize. Here's the lowdown: the first DVD chapters 1-14 tries to focus on Parn, who is a simplistic village boy, son of a Heroic Knight of some distant war. Parn grew up in the same village with Etoh, the cleric. Meets up with the High Elf Deedlit, and the Enchanter Slayn and Ghim the dwarf. They almost save the village from random total annhilation by possess goblins and Parn barely wins his first experience one-on one melee with the lead goblin. From there, this groupgoes on a series of seemingly random adventures. They have a loose collective idea to go meet an Archmage named Wort. Viewers are introduced to the uber-bad guys, the Black Knight (who's name we don't learn until episode 12, Ashram) his little gang that includes a powerful mage and some powerful fighter that we learn in episode 17 is Emperor Beld and the mage ended up being the central player named Wagnard. We learn HIS name in episode 24. The "Hero", Parn, ends up saving the elf girl from some nonsensical plot that I won't reveal in any "spoiler". Main complaints: it's slow and boring. Too much talk. For example: the hero group (Parn, etc), spends three frames and two episodes talking about the Forest of No Return; and they "return in less than ten minutes?" It also didn't make sense how they returned. They just fell out of the forest into another more normal forest (!) The prologue did not connect with the rest of the story and they kept injecting it in the story. They didn't' have a map, so the viewers had no sense of the kingdoms or alliances. They built the story of Wort and getting to him up and then used the Heroes' adventure there in a flashback? the whole thing with Karla and Wort didn't play for me; it took Wort too long to intervene. Karla switching to the last body didn't make sense either. They took too long to introduce character names and added two new characters in the middle of the story (the Beserker and his companion) for no rhyme or reason. Deedlit's voice was annoying, and it seemed weird that the enemies always picked on her; is she the only High Elf? Who knew? No explanation? Who is Prince Jester? Which group did he belong to? What happened to him after the battles? They focused way too much story time on the two swords, and the dragons. The dragons they built up to, and then they dropped the storyline for three episodes? The names, by the way, is too funny, it's sad. Couldn't they have come up with better names? They're awful!! Deedlit???[what are those things coming out of her head, ears, or carrots?] Parn? Wort? Wagnard? Sheesh. Woodchuck? Is Etoh a female or male? oh well. the music was good, the dark elf woman was good looking. Ashram was cool Avoid, though kids may like this....and TRUE anime fans may also. The story was adapted to novelizations, audio books, and video games, followed by a 13-part OAV (original animation video) series, which was released in two parts in 1990 and 1991. Five years later, the 27-part broadcast series was completed. Although some characters, settings, and incidents appear in both continuities, the OAV and broadcast versions ofLodoss Warwere made independently, and the discrepancies in their sword-and-sorcery narratives can't be reconciled. The broadcast series is divided into two linked adventures involving the supernatural treasures hidden by the last rulers of the Kingdom of Sorcerers 500 years earlier. The first tale (eight chapters) centers on Parn, the honorable Free Knight, and his High Elf companion Deedlit, the heroes of the OAV series. With some help from an assortment of allies that includes King Kashue of Flaim, an annoying grass sprite, and a berserker mercenary, Parn defeats the megalomaniacal knight Ashram, who seeks to rule a united Lodoss with the Scepter of Domination. The second adventure takes place 10 years later and focuses on Spark, a young Knight-in-Training at the court of King Kashue, who idolizes Parn. Spark and a veritable army of secondary characters battle the evil sorcerer Wagnard, who plots to resurrect the destroyer-goddess Kardis. Kardis will destroy every other living thing in Lodoss, leaving Wagnard to rule an eternal Kingdom of the Dead. From these adventures and Parn's counsel, Spark learns what it means to be a true knight; he wins the respect of his men and the love of his lady. Unfortunately, the story line breaks down in the later episodes, when writer Katsumi Hasegawa seems to lose track of the plot and many of the characters. Ashram returns--despite having fallen into a lava pit in episode 8--but as a noble and prudent ruler. Karla, the ancient gray witch, opposes Wagnard, then allies with him. Several "dei ex machinae" appear at the last minute to save situations. The lapses in the storytelling may help to explain why many fans prefer the shorter OAV series, although both versions offer plenty of ancient prophecies, spells, dragons, duels, star-crossed romances, and apocalyptic threats. The individual episodes are separated by "Trailers," odd little segments in which child versions of the main characters make fun of each other and the story. Unrated.
