Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hell Girl: The Complete First Season) 『Fascinating stories raising a number of profound philosiphical issues about evil, right and wrong, vengeance, salvation, and even the meaning of life! Japanese cartoons like this series, or films such as Princess Mononoke, bring you food for thought and for meditation. They have nothing to do with the usual rubbish which is inflicted upon us on TV. In my view they could even be viewed by children below the age of 13.』
(Watch this Online First...You may not wanna buy this!) 『I just finished this series today and I gotta say I'm not that impressed. Hell Girl also known as Ai Enma runs a website known as the Hell correspondence. Initially most episodes are episodic in the sense that each episode is separate story in which the protagonist gets wronged by some individual, usually the antagonist and they end up contacting the Hell correspondence so they can enact their revenge. Which seems like a good idea considering the moral implications in the story but this gets rather repetitive. First 10-12 episodes I found myself asking, "Is this series ever gonna pick up or is it gonna continue being episode after episode of characters being wronged and then getting revenge." I mean the first 10-12 episodes seemed like just a different character with a different problem and then enter Hell Girl to enact revenge Ad nauseam. It wasn't until later episodes that two characters a journalist named Shibata Hajime, a former blackmailer, and his daughter Tsugumi where the series starts to get more in depth as far as plot structure. As you progress through the series you learn the reason why Hell correspondence exists or but its never that clear who's really pulling the strings. I suppose in season 2&3 they'll be getting more in depth with the story line. I suppose the viewer will also find out the background stories of some of the people assisting Hell Girl. Considering that this story didn't have such a horrible ending is a redeeming factor but the rest just falls flat. Like in series like Death Note the viewer is pushed to ask themselves, "Do wrongdoers deserve punishment for their wrongdoing? Or is everything not always so black and white." These moral implications make the premise a lot more interesting but in the end you must always pay a price.
Rating 1-10 Animation: 8 I would have hoped that with the punishment being Hell they would have made the initial punishments a lot more terrifying graphics wise but the characters and background settings are very well rendered.
Story line: 7 Like I said the first 10-12 episodes are extremely repetitive and at first watch I had to put this series down for a while and watch something else but eventually the story gets more in depth.
Characters: 6 Most characters who assist Ai Enma in Hell correspondence aren't given background stories and some of the characters who dish out revenge have background stories that really aren't that well developed.
Replay Value: 0 I don't think I'll be watching this again.
Overall Rating: I gave this an Amazon 3 out of 5 because I just thought it was okay. At first watch it seemed like an interesting premise for an anime but it wasn't well executed at all. The ending was pretty good and it left me interesting in maybe watching the second and third seasons but hopefully it won't be as repetitive.』
"Hell Girl" is a series of loosely related stories about revenge by proxy and cowardice, very Japanese in its single-minded focus in the art, characters, and narrative on only a few moral themes. When is it right not merely to kill someone but to send them to scream in Hell forever? Enma Ai, the elegant and deadly demon girl of the title, warns you there is a price: YOUR soul is also forfeit if you untie the red thread that signals your contract with Hell to take your resented enemies to a dark and eternal afterlife.
Each episode tells a different version of a story where someone accepts this bargain. I have read bored fans who say that "Hell Girl" is slow, annoyingly repetitive, and never really makes any progress. And it is true that if you want demon battles, sword-swinging monsters, and raging hormones, you shouldn't bother with "Hell Girl." You are likely to be bored witless by these stories of desperation - bullied schoolgirls, terrified victims of vicious psychological blackmail, helpless frightened people who see no way out - and of why each turns to the dark paths of the demons to seek a freedom they cannot see how to reach otherwise. But "Hell Girl" was not made for fans of sword-swinging demon-and-hero stories. It is far subtler and - make no mistake about this - a great deal creepier. These stories get under the skin of one's mind and crawl around in there. (That means "Hell Girl" is NOT for children.)
In parallel to these stories is the story of Enma Ai herself, and of a reporter and his daughter who are trying to track her down. No spoilers here: this story is riveting and thoroughly satisfying - and in some ways much creepier than all the other stories (which is saying a lot).
The animation and plotting has the curious effect of making us want to reach into the story and shake up people. So we are caught in a bind as well, trapped by the same helpless desire for revenge that we are simultaneously watching. Don't underestimate the capacity of these stories to get at you. And throughout, the same moral question: is it right to seek revenge by demonic proxy - and be sent to Hell for it - or is it better to defeat not one's enemies but one's own cowardice? Beware of the knee-jerk answer: "Hell Girl" quite convincingly shows us, over and over, why people do not refuse Enma Ai's offer. "Hell Girl" is not a horror anime - it's much too sophisticated for that. It's unique in narrative, character, animation, and moral framework - not a nice story at all, but very powerful, like Enma Ai herself.
Highly recommended.

(Very Slow Start... But Eventually Worth It) 『I don't normally review anime series because I don't consider myself a guru at it. I watch a lot of animes and like many differnt types, but I still don't consider myself fair judge of the stuff. But, here goes anyway. Hope this helps a few people.
We waited and waited for this series to come to the USA, in the complete first season. The animation looked wonderful, the idea of the series sounded dark and deep, and the voice for HellGirl seemed right on.
Upon entering the HellGirl realm, the animation is still really good, but the storyline needed a huge boost in script. The first two discs were barely worth watching, but the third disc and further were really interesting and kept me hooked. You've got to be patient with this one.
Disc 1 and 2 were the introductions to the main characters, explaining situations where someone might want to exact revenge on someone else, so they log into a site that is only available at midnight, send a message to HellGirl with the person's name. HellGirl almost instantly appears and she gives them the option to send someone to Hell- but the trade "the price" is that when they die, they too will be sent to Hell, so it'd better be worth it.
The characters in Disc 1 + 2 were wanting. Most were teenaged kids who didn't really comprehend what they were doing, sending a fellow classmate to Hell because they embarrassed them, or sending someone to Hell because they weren't friends anymore... (rolls eyes) kids stuff. You almost want to laugh and say "get over it!" but... many teens don't understand that life goes on, so maybe it's a little truthful. But, to be honest, I was hoping for some really dark and morbid episodes (which don't happen until about Disc 3) You don't get to the really GOOD "worth it" Hell-bound stories until Disc 3, where (for example) two lovers are forbidden to see each other because her aunt says no. The aunt plays voodoo with the male lover and is threatening his life. The aunt is psychotic and comes after the two of them... yesh, it'd be worth it to me to send her to Hell if to get just a few years of peace.
I read a different review that mentioned that there was a lot of repitition, and I want to explain that one: HellGirl had a really hard time getting picked up as a series in Japan, so it had a lot of Pilot or "sample" episodes while it was trying to get signed on. This is the reason for the repitition- the repeated scenes, the repeated lines, the repeated fire chariot and sleeve/flower explosion, Hell's gate, etc. Really. After the first two discs, the show is really pretty good. By disc 3, it reminds me of "R.O.D." and in some ways "His and Her Circumstances". The artistry is pretty good, the storyline thickens as Purgatory Girl is introduced and the research/ investigation resumes. The supporting, repeating characters really helped to boost the script.
So, overall, this first season is okay. As a whole, it's a 2.5 star season. Writing: 2 stars Animation: 4 stars Potential: 5 stars (c'mon, dig into the scary depths of your mind and let it out! we want to see!)
If you can be patient, watch this. If you can't, skip it- cuz it's really only worth the watch halfway through. Similar darkness, watch instead "Paranoia Agent", "Lain", "Noir", "Akira"』
(Grrrrr....RENTAL ONLY!!) 『I can't believe that there is a second season in the works. I just watched AirGear, which was cancelled, and I think that it has more storyline depth than this constant regurgitation of : somebody hurt me ( or my doggie, are you kidding me!), please hell girl (who is a broken record) AVENGE ME (lol), sure NP but your gonna go to hell also, K that's cool, I think the trade off of eternal (can we say forever) damnation is justifiable (the bad man ignored my doggie!)for vengence! Sweet idea, unless those who produce the idea have no IMAGINATION and constantly reuse clips. Meh, I'm just annoyed that I spent money on poo. As for the five star raters, wow, your easily entertained. And yes, my review was disjointed and made little sense, just like what I was reviewing. Go figure.
P.S.- I honestly don't mind that some people are stupid enough to think that trading there soul to hell is worth one single moment of revenge. But come on! I can't believe they took an interesting concept and went all silly and bored as hell girl with it. Goes to show you that sometimes spending a ton of money does not make an anime worthy. RENT THIS BEFORE YOU WASTE YOUR MONEY!!』 『Your Grievance Shall Be Avenged.

I hadn't heard much about it, and what I did hear about it didn't make it seem worth the time. I finaly got the opportunity to check it out, and boy am I glad. Coyote Ragtime show is a serious action anime. It's like Oceans Eleven meets Cowboy Bebop meets Point Break. There is action every single step of the way. There are only 12 episodes in the series but they feel like they are an hour long each because so much happens in one episode. The story mainly focuses on a bandit named Mister and his quest to find the treasure of his long time friend.
The twist of the story is that he is a bandit seeking treasure, but this treasure he is after is really the inheritance that was left behind for the daughter of his late friend that whom was left to his care. Throughout the story you get to see that there is honor amongst these theives and that they value the bonds they share over the loot that they steal.
The anime artwork is excellent, and for the most part the characters have been portrayed very well. The plot is what makes coyote ragtime worth watching. In this anime you don't have the typical cop chase scenario. In this one it's a gang of bandits running from an overly obsessive federal agent, and a mad woman with her army of soldiers and android assasins. It's not so much a 12 episode gun chase seen, when you get to look at each character and the relationships they have with one another. My only problem with the anime is that it doesn't show much the motives behind the villian "Mother". She commands an endless army of troopers and android assasins, but you know little about where she came from or why she is doing what she does. She really is a mystery to the end. That was the biggest issue I had with the anime. Other than that it was a great series to watch. Mostly the Coyote gang get into impossible situations and your always asking yourself "how are they going to overcome this" as you sit through all 12 episodes. I really reccomend this if your looking for a good action anime. It's short, but for the action and story its well worth it!』
(A Very Entertaining And Action-Filled Sci-Fi Anime) 『If you've seen Outlaw star than you'll probably like this series as well short as it was. The series follows the adventure of a group of pirates known as Coyotes. The characters are Mister(An old time space pirate known throughout the galaxy for pulling off amazing capers), Franca Dockley(The young daughter of the most famous pirate who was known as Pirate King Bruce but was betrayed and killed by someone he knew), Katana(The Coyote's pilot and technician), Bishop(An intelligent hacker), and along the way the coyote's team up with another friend of Pirate King Bruce Swamp Gordon(A former pirate now turned angelic preacher). Also in the series you have two females one a federal agent and her naive helper trying to track down and arrest the coyotes, and than you have the main villain Madame Marciano who has a dark past with Mister and has a horrendous amount of hate for Mister and was the one who killed Pirate King Bruce. What also gave the series a lot of action were the twelve android sisters who are named after the months of the year as well who have unwavering devotion and loyalty to their "Mother Marciano". The series is mostly about trying to find the money that the pirate king stole from the galaxy bank and trying to get to it first, of course there are a few side story-plots as well but you'll probably won't really care to much for those as you're going to be more interested in the confrontation between Mister and Madame Marciano. The video is clear and sharp which you expect for recent animes and the voice cast for the Japanese/English cast did a superb job. The series is only twelve episodes and for the price a little iffy but if you like sci-fi action animes this one won't disappoint....』
(Great Start, Ends in a Whimper) 『Let's start off by saying that the first episode of this show was absolutely brilliant. It had everything: an engaging setting, intriguing plot, intelligent (if slightly gluttonous) protagonist, spunky sidekick, and killer robot maids. The animation was wonderfully done, and the story's pace was smooth and quick. By the time the first episode ended, I was SALIVATING for more.
... and then, I watched the second episode. Everything fell apart after that.
The worst mistake the show made, in my opinion, was switching protagonists from the space detective Angelica to the space pirate/bandit/whatever Mister. If they had stuck with the former, then the show would have stayed in the wonderful sort of cat-and-mouse chase that the first episode pulled off so well. It would have been like a Lupin III, but in space. Instead, we get a show whose main cast (Mister and his band of merry cayote-outlaws) spending the entire series trying WAY too hard to be the Cowboy Bebop gang. After the brilliant first episode, the cast stops being smart, the plotlines veer off to somewhere between "irritatingly cliche" and "boring as hell," and the villains just get plain irksome.
If you have the money to spare, I suppose this set is worth it just to watch the great first episode, as well as seeing the Twelve Sisters in action. It's quite unfortunate, since it showed so much promise in the beginning.』 『Insurrection will not be tolerated! And to prove the point, the government has set a big, bad bomb to blast Graceland right out of the sky! To make matters worse, the King is dead. However, before Pirate King Bruce died, he hid billions in stolen loot on the doomed planet. Now, the galaxy's most infamous criminal a mystery man known only as "Mister", has busted out of the slammer to get his hands on the booty before it's too late! Along with King Bruce's daughter and his band of misfit Coyotes, Mister sidesteps government goons, dodges a hottie investigator who's on his trail and fends off a dozen android Lolitas who are programmed to kill, kill, KILL! Bullets, blades, bombs, beauty and boobs: if it's capable of destruction or distraction, it's fair game in this chilling, thrilling, killing, blood-spilling first volume of Coyote Ragtime Show!』

(Great Series) 『I initially watched this series because I am a big fan of Slayers and knew this was done by the same people. I watched the first episode and was immediately drawn in, because I love things that blend sci-fi and fantasy. Lost Universe is similar to Slayers in that it combines humorous and serious elements. There are some episodes that are just purely silly (in one episode, they must stop a ship by being hijacked by fanatical chicken-worshipers), while especially later in the series more serious themes of friendship, loyalty, and not giving up even in the darkest circumstances come into play. The characters are also more well developed and three dimensional than those in Slayers. In general, the Slayers legacy can be seen in Lost Universe, but it is in a lot of ways a much more mature series.
The only problems I had with it were I thought the ending was a bit rushed. I think that if they had gotten rid of just a couple of the filler episodes in the beginning and started the "actual" plot one or two episodes sooner, the series would have felt more coherent. As it is, many crucial plot details were revealed all of a sudden at the very end, and happen all at once such as to lessen the emotional impact. It seems almost like we have two series here -- the beginning, which is entertaining and comedic, and the more serious second half, which raises a lot of world-building and philosophical points, but doesn't have time to explore them thoroughly.
The series is very similar to Star Wars, too, to the point of almost being a blatant ripoff. I don't simply mean about the light and the dark side fighting each other with magical glowing swords, either. But you'll see when you get to the final two or three episodes what I'm talking about. The similarities, however, are more within the plot details than they are in the world-building, which I thought was done quite well, glowing swords and all.
If that doesn't bother you, though, then I think this series is definitely worth seeing. The awesome characters and compelling universe more than make up for any of the series' shortcomings in my opinion.』
(An Entertaining And Amusing Sci-Fi Collection Worth The Price) 『I have to say this is probably another gem I unknowingly found while looking for another series for myself and have not been disappointed with my choice. The series is similar to the humor of the anime series Slayers and Ranma 1/2. The series itself focuses mostly on the three main characters Millie Nocturne(An Under/Over achiever trying her best to be the best at what she wants to do with dubious results), Kane Blueriver(A captain of the starship SwordBreaker and while somewhat of a bumbler is actually a skilled fighter), and finally Canal(The SwordBreaker's holographic A.I. image with a smarmy attitude). The series has you see the trio go on their zanny and humorous quests together and while there is fighting and action it's not done to be to dramatic or serious like Gundam Seed or Inuyasha. The last final episodes do seem a bit more dramatic than the rest of the series but I think it fits in nicely though for the storyline. The voice actors for the dubbed audio were pretty good and while there were some that could have done better all in all they weren't bad. The Japanese voice actors did a terrific job as well no complaints there and the video for the series is clear with no blurriness or distortions to worry about. So if you like the light-hearted sci-fi anime with a big touch of comedy this hidden gem might be for you and for those still unsure try watching a few episodes you might just be surprised at how much you enjoy it....』
(I had to buy this show!) 『After renting the first several volumes of Lost Universe, I discovered that the video store didn't have the last half of the show! The plot line is so strangely gripping (watch the show and you'll know why it's strange to call it "gripping") that I had to know what happens. I had nearly given up on it when I found it here! This weekend, I'll find out how it ends . . . If you're reading this, you should buy it too, before you end up wishing you had. Plus, it works just fine, came in perfect condition, shipped in no time, and shipping was free! What more could you ask for? After all, it is "the best in the universe!"』
(more good than bad) 『One or two of the female voices are somewhat irritating at times, and the main character is so obviously a copy of Luke Skywalker. The artwork can be a bit spotty, as it chages from drawn to computerised. It is the sort of mystery that you don't find out what it is about, or even that there is a unifying plot, until near the end. Yet it does manage to be well enough written, have a happy ending, and have many funny spots.』 『LOST UNIVERSE DVD THINPAK COLLECTION
The series' first-ever DVD collection also marks the first time the 26-episode Lost Universe saga will be available to North American fans with unedited (and remastered) video. This collection will also include two new subtitle tracks (standard and on-screen translations), plus the previously released Japanese audio and English-language dub. Lost Universe shares a creative team with the popular Slayers anime series: Both anime properties were based upon novels by Hajime Kanzaka (Slayers), directed by Takashi Watanabe (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Shakugan No Shana) and feature character designs by Naomi Miyata (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try). Additionally, the series was recognized with the "Best Individual Episode" award by the Japanese magazine Animage following its initial TV Tokyo broadcast. About LOST UNIVERSE: Millie Nocturne has one great goal in life: to be the best in the universe... at absolutely everything! But when she tries her hand at being the "best detective," she ends up an unwilling partner with two people who will change her life forever - Kain Blueriver, the psi-blade-wielding master of the starship Swordbreaker, and Canal, the smart-mouthed holographic image of the ship's computer! Join this unlikely trio on their adventures as they hurtle through space, facing off against intergalactic crime lords, rogue starships, hijackers dressed as chickens... and that's just the tip of the asteroid! DVD Features: Entire 26-episode series in one thinpak collection with scene access, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio for English and Japanese dialogue, two completely new English subtitle tracks (standard track and on-screen translations), and unedited, remastered video. Plus: Character bios, liner notes and Right Stuf / Nozomi Entertainment trailers.』
『The broadcast seriesLost Universe(1998) begins as a slapstick sci-fi comedy about a mismatched trio of adventurers. Trouble Contractor Kain Blueriver always wears a blue cape and fights with a sword powered by psychic energy. Green-haired Canal is the holographic embodiment of the control system of Kain's ship, theSwordbreaker. In their first adventures, Kain and Canal acquire a third companion: Millie, a Jill-of-all-trades, mistress of none, who is determined to be the best in the universe at… something. The quarrelsome trio performs numerous feats of daring-do for hire, but the fees never seem to cover their expenses. The first half ofLost Universeis broadly comic. A crystal Millie finds turns out to be a hi-tech booby trap that reconfigures space and matter: The layout of theSwordbreakerfluctuates wildly, making it impossible to find anything--including the bathroom. But as the series continues, it shifts from a comedy-adventure to a blatantStar Warsclone. Kain is pitted against Nightmare, the maniacal head of a crime syndicate, and his deadly ship, theNazard. An even greater foe, the mysteriousYami o Makumono("Spreader of Darkness"), appears to Kain in his dreams, urging him to join the Dark Side, where his psychic powers will reach their fullest expression. The elaborate battles with Nightmare's forces generate little suspense, because it's clear that Kain has to survive to defeatYami o Makumonoand his space fortress, theDark Star. Why he's the Luke Skywalker of this universe is never explained, but he's more entertaining as a goofy Trouble Contractor than as a Mark Hamill substitute. This 1988, 6 Episode OVA from the Director Anno Hideaki, the man who presented to us NGE is one of the best OVA that i've ever watched, though i couldn't stop laughing here and there for how much classic this anime is. the story follows Noriko who her father was killed in humanity's first encounter with aliens. being Proud of her father Noriko decided to be a space pilot herself, for that, she joins Okinawa Girls' Space Pilot High School, unfortunately Noriko is just a klutz young girl who is one of the worst pilots in the school, but when Koichiro Ohta a new couch arrives, he sets his eyes on her out of all the students and he puts her together with Kazumi Amano the best mecha pilot in the school, and there Noriko's journey to space starts. what i really liked about this OVA was the good implementation of the space theories, like the speed of light and the time dimension factor and how those have effected the characters and the story development. that helped us see the change on earth over the years from the eyes of the characters. the characters themselves were memorable, even thought Noriko was so annoying in the begging, she managed to get so much experience that made her develop remarkably making her fit to be a the pilot of the great mecha gunbuster, and while noriko was going foreword we saw the other character Amano being bushed back by her emotion that she was hiding at the begging and which made her a cool character at the time, but still she was a great character herself. the music for this OVA was just great, i loved that sound track that comes with the gunbuster seances making the fight much more exciting, and that Inazuma (lighting) kick, even thought it was funny at the beginning, it was just plain cool later on. the Art for it's time was nice, i'm still not that much into the characters design, but it was still classic, what i really hated was the last Ep Black and White panel thing, after 12,000 year people will think that the animation should be more the better, but using black and white coloring was annoying, they say it's artistic and unique, but still it was annoying, if i wanted to watch something in black and white, i would put my sunglasses on, but still, that what makes out Gainax, they always don't disappoint you to be disappointed in the end of anything they make, i'v got used to it, but that doesn't change that this OVA was the best for me so far, even from Gainax.』
(beutiful things) 『if you like anime if ou like movies if you like hideako anno works if you like giant robots, aliens invasion in good sci fi setting if you like beautiful things there a big chance you ll like gunbuster i ve saw it on vhs( and youtube also) a great many times had always like it( sometimes love it) give it a try you ll hardly regret it』
(Video Quality) 『This is not a review of the show but of this DVD release. Bandai Visual USA essentially put zero effort into this "remastered" three disc-set.
There is a thick white line that always runs down the entire left side of the frame and there's a thin white line that sometimes runs down the right side of the frame. There's constant video noise that mars the image (not film grain, mind you, just video noise). Worst of all is the near constant frame judder. The video jumps constantly and almost never stops moving. It's extraordinarily distracting.
To sum it up, this release has the quality of a bootleg at best - only it's priced ridiculously high instead. What a waste of money.』
(Did I miss something?) 『After many recommendations from friends, and reading universal praise, I went into the "classic" 6 episode series with high hopes - hopes that developed leprosy and collapsed under the weight of their dead, jaundiced flesh by the end.
Gunbuster is wrought with 2D characterization, uninspired designs, awkward fan-service, and a hilariously incomprehensible plot - and not incomprehensible in an entertaining, mysterious sense - but in a pissed out sort of way that's explained in an embarrassing, 30 second, expository excretion. Anyone who says this show has depth must be weighed down by nostalgia for it, because I simply can't understand any other reason for it being praised. It boggles my mind. And if anyone recommends it with a disclaimer about it being made in the 80s, don't trust them - age does not excuse quality.
But does Gunbuster have redeeming qualities? Of course - it's very well animated. The drama with characters aging in space is novel. And...uh...hmm...sorry, I just remembered how tedious and head-punchingly bad this show was.
If I was forced to recommend this series, I would only for those who are interested in its historical value, to be watched more as research than entertainment. I would explain my reasoning further, but this brief moment of nerd-rage has subsided - and the less time spent with Gunbuster, the better.』
(A highly recommended mecha classic!) 『The directorial debut of acclaimed director Hideaki Anno, Gunbuster is a legendary anime fan favorite that casts pretty girls and giant robots into a moving epic of insterstellar naval war. Newly translated and re-mastered in HD 24P format, Gunbuster has never before been available on DVD in North America...until now!
2015: Earth's first faster-than-light ship, the Luxion, is lost, attacked by unidentified space monsters in the Perseus Arm. Six years later, Noriko Takaya, daughter of the Luxion's commander, enters the Okinawa girls' Space Pilot High School, vowing to be a pilot and follow her father's trail to the stars. But is she prepared for the intense training to become a member of the elite Top Squadron? Noriko's fight has just begun-and the fate of all humanity depends on her meeting the challenge!
It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 20 years when I first discovered "Gunbuster", the awesome mecha anime that has won the hearts for anime fans since its first release back in 1988.
The year was 1992 and I discovered this awesome series through an anime club meeting and I was just enamored by the series so much that I purchased the English subtitled VHS videos which contained two episodes for like $35 through Books Nippan. In fact, when the VHS was re-released in 1996 by another company, I had to buy that because the video tapes have been viewed too many times and started to lose its quality.
It's really interesting how many people I converted to anime fans through letting them borrow my video tapes. "Gunbuster" is one of the few rare series you will find where each episode is well written, gripping and you just can't stop after one episode. You just want to watch the whole series completely throughout.
What I really enjoyed is how the OAV series fluctuated between parodying other anime but also its attention to light speed travel, black holes and warp factor.
Of course, back in the 90's, not only did you have a knock out punch with beautiful animation, a well written storyline but you also had the top voice actresses from a popular anime series that was so big among American anime fans at that time. You had Hidaka Noriko as the main character Takaya Noriko (note: Hidaka is known for the voice talent of Akane from "Ranma 1/2), Sakuma Rei as Amano Kazumi (note: Sakuma was the voice talent of "Ranma 1/2" character Shampoo) and then you had the "Active Heart" theme song by then-pop idol Sakai Noriko.
The series would feature a lot of references and then at the end of each episode, fans were treated with "Science Lesson" episodes featuring chibi versions of the characters featuring even more references.
But as much as the anime references to other anime and scientists, "Gunbuster" also worked as a fun parody with its use of the title "Gunbuster! Top o Nerae" (Aim for the Top) which is a parody of the anime and manga tennis series "Ace wo Nerae!" and the hugely popular Western film "Top Gun".
Of course we know that director Hideaki Anno went on to be known for his creation of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and the "Science Lessons" director Tsurumaki Kazuya went on to direct "FLCL" and "Gunbuster 2".
Here we are 20 years since the original OAV's were released in Japan, six episodes all on DVD featuring Noriko as she pushes herself to become a formidable pilot, watching her as the weak girl who would cry a lot but push herself and train herself to become one of the best pilots from the squadron.
There is so much to love about the anime, not just about the oh-so-good feeling of an underdog showing everyone that she can do it and accomplish things and prove them wrong but also how science is used in this series. Each time they go light speed into space, each minute that goes by, three months has gone by in Earth.
So, what could be complex is actually well written and explained in the anime series as each time Noriko arrives back to Earth, her schoolmates are much older than her and have children.
I guess you can say that with each episode, you get much more than what you would expect. That's how I felt about "Gunbuster". Fulfilled, excited about the next episode and wanting more.
Also, for the guys wanting a little "H", "Gunbuster" does have it's share of nudity scenes.
As for the DVD, inside the box, you will find a folding case with three DVD's featuring artwork of the cast of "Gunbuster" and the "Gunbuster" mech itself.
Also included is a booklet featuring character information, "Gunbuster" Gainax behind-the-scenes information plus information on each episode
The episodes are presented in its full aspect ratio with the final episode being black and white and letterboxed. The animation looks awesome even for it being 20-years-old, I really enjoyed how this anime was remastered.
The sound is offered in Linear PCM 2.0 which is a higher bit rate for audio.
There is no English dub, all vocals are Japanese and for subtitles, you can choose to have it on or off or on with the signs translated as well.
The menus are clean with selections of each episode (two episodes per disc) and the Science Lesson Chapters.
As for extra features, there are a few.
Disc 1 features "Good Morning OGH!" which was the promotional trailer produced back in July 1988. This is featured in 2ch, 5.1ch and 5.1ch (dialogue off). There is a quic intro explanation how the trailers were saved on to a VHS tape to a super hi-8 tape and thus the quality is not great. But you start to see how the quality between the DVD versus a promo tape are.
Disc 2 features "Cosmic Battle Space" in 2ch or 5.1ch which features another perspective (from episode 4) of the fight between the squadron and the alien monsters.
Disc 3 features the "Sizzler Project" in 2ch or 5.1ch. This is a promotional trailer produced in 1989 and actually features character Jung Freud learning about the new Gunbuster mechas being created. This was very interesting to see and similar to the first promotional trailer.
"Gunbuster" has remained one of my top 3 anime that I will forever treasure in my heart. It's a series that shows guts, determination, happiness, sadness. It's literally an emotional rollercoaster that has made me smile, cry...
It's well written, features really awesome scenes and interaction between the characters. Well-acted, well-animated and just one of those rare treasures that have come along that you just don't see as much these days from a lot of anime.
Especially with a storyline managed to be complete in six episodes, I'm impressed.
I know that there is a region 0 disc that was released with a fourth disc that featured a rough episode five and unmatted episode six with a few other features but sure, as much as it would have been nice to have that in the US release, I'm not actually losing sleep over it either.
For a great price, you get all six episodes on DVD. For the boxset is the price I paid for one VHS back then. And I know for dub fans who don't like to read subtitles, it's going to be hard to recommend it to you to begin with.
But if you want quality anime that still looks very cool now as it did 20 years ago and also to watch one of the best, well written sci-fi/mecha anime OAV series ever released, then definitely check out "GUNBUSTER".
I highly recommend the "Gunbuster" anime DVD box set. You won't regret it.』 『The directorial debut of acclaimed creator Hideaki Anno, GUNBUSTER is a legendary anime fan favorite that casts pretty girls and giant robots into a moving epic of interstellar naval war. Noriko's fight has just begun and the fate of all humanity depends on her meeting the challenge!』 『The OAVGunbuster(a.k.a. "Aim for the Top") proved so popular it spawned a manga series, the sequelDiebuster(2004) and a theatrical feature (2006). When she was a child, Noriko Takaya's father was killed in humanity's first encounter with aliens from the core of the galaxy. Her desire to follow him into space leads Noriko to the Okinawa Girls' Space Pilot High School, where she meets her future partner Kazumi Amano and Coach Koichiro Ohta. Noriko displays little aptitude for steeringmecha, but Ohta sees the potential beneath the maladroit exterior. Soon Noriko is in space, piloting the experimental robot-suit Gunbuster and fighting aliens who look like the monsters in Gahan Wilson cartoons.Gunbusterplays like a mixture ofPatlabor,Star Wars, andRobotech, with a generous helping of fan service nudity. In the intervening years, Noriko's mixture of weepy ineptitude and I'll-do-my-best fire has become an anime archetype. And there's simply too much story for a six-part OAV: characters appear and disappear with little effect.
Gunbusterhas received a great deal of attention because it marked the first commercial success from the fledgling Gainax studio and the directorial debut ofNeon Genesis Evangelioncreator Hideaki Anno. It's hard to see much foreshadowing of Anno's later brilliance, except for the dramatic use of a black and white palate and still artwork in the last episode, set 12,000 years in the future. Spreading six episodes with minimal extras over three discs seems chintzy, as the material could easily fit on two or even one. ANIME WORKS
Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Pain of Eternity) 『It's hard to rate this series because it's a collection of five short stories. The only links the stories have is the Phoenix, and the immortal bird of legend tends not to play a huge role in any of the stories, often just being in the background watching the events unfold.
Some of the stories last for four episodes, others one. Some of the stories take place in the past, others in the future. Some of the stories involve battles between Gods, others focus on battles against nature. There's almost too much variation.
The first, four episode story is probably the best of the lot - it flowed well from episode to episode, despite there being a lot of twists. It started with a man washing ashore somewhere, getting captured by a tribe and needing to save the life of a woman to save himself from being executed. The focus then switched to an Apocalypto style raid on the tribe by another country. It then switched yet again, this time to a father and son type of story where one of the invaders raised one of the few survivors of the raid as his own. And, during all this, the story kept switching back to the man who washed ashore trying to survive with the woman from the tribe he saved at the start, with them ended up trapped in a cave and left to the mercy of nature.
Out of all of the stories, the was the most involving. I found myself struggling to care about a lot of the characters included in the series, with some taking drastic actions without any real development having occurred, but in the opening story it was easy to care about the 'father' and 'son' who tried to survive during times of war. My only real complaint about it is that the Phoenix might as well have not even been in this story at all. It did nothing other than get hunted on and off a few times. If the Phoenix had played a more important role, like it does in later stories, I could understand its involvement, but it was just there for no real reason. The messages of the first story are that death is a part life that must be accepted and that war is pointless, neither message needing the Phoenix to be expressed.
The second story occurs in space; on the moon. That's right - a jump from the ancient past to the far future.
The story takes place during a time where the Earth has died and the remnants of the human race have escaped to space. At some point after their escape, some humans on the moon discovered the Phoenix, which has the power to give life, and they managed to get one of its tail feathers. Research on the feather took place on the moon, and one of the men in charge was on the verge of understanding it when an 'accident' occurred, resulting in the destruction of the lab and the death of most in it. Right before the researcher died, he was attempting to save a female friend from falling to her death, her last words being "You traitor..."
After the opening described above, the story quickly caught my interest. The researcher who died had been revived after the 'accident', half of his brain having been replaced by a machine. When he awakened, he couldn't distinguish one human from another - they all looked like distorted monsters to him - and he had no memories of his past. However, he discovered shortly after awakening that robots appeared to be living organisms to him, with one robot in particular looking like a woman, resembling the woman who called him a traitor before his death. Shortly after discovering his new 'female' friend, he runs away from the humans with the robot, escaping to the lab that was destroyed at the start.
I liked the second story a lot. It wasn't as involving as the first, mainly because it only lasted for two episodes, but the story was fascinating. It was basically a story of redemption, where one man had to correct his past mistakes by living on. If there's one thing that's suggested a lot in each story included, it's that, rather than being a blessing, immortality is a curse; a punishment that must be endured.
What follows the above is the only one episode story in the entire series. Back in ancient times once more after the leap into the future of the second story, this time around the story was about a woman killing a healer in order to prevent the healer saving her father. As a punishment for killing the healer, the Phoenix forces the killer to take on the role of the healer she killed, trapping her and taking her back in time. In order to make amends, she must allow herself to be killed by herself and hope that, at some point, the the cycle of life and death stops. It was a decent story but, compared to what went before, it wasn't great and it didn't have the length required to make me care a great deal.
The next story switched back to the four episode formula the series opened up with. This time around, still somewhere in the past, a member of the royal family of some clan or another gets the face of wolf put on him after having his own face scalped. He awakens sometime afterwards to discover what has become of his face and, eventually, heads east to another country in order to try to get his old face back after being informed that his future will be brighter if he does so by an old woman who can predict such things.
I liked the fourth story but never really got into it. The back-story of "Dogface" is never explained in detail, and I was left mystified with regards to what exactly lead up to him getting captured and losing his face. Likewise, I didn't get how the wolves face became his own, mouth movements and all. The only thing that came across clear as day was the message of the story, the message being that no religion is right or wrong; only the people themselves are wrong. Despite it lasting for as long as a movie, I felt the story needed more time, or at the very least needed much better explanations.
What really bothered me was the love story aspect of the fourth story. One of the many 'Gods' of the nation in the east fell for Dogface at first sight, never even having a conversation with him before deciding to follow him. She also risked her life for him without much chatter between the two. Their relationship never came across as a real because not enough time was put into it by the author and/or the animation studio. And the end of the story made little sense, with her leaving Dogface randomly, Dogface randomly getting his face back and the two seemingly ending up back together, despite Dogface losing his memory for some reason.
Moving onto the final, two episode story, the story once again took place in the distant future, just like the second story did. In the future depicted in the last story, humans had moved under the surface of the Earth in an attempt to survive after life could no longer be lived above ground. One scientist (Saruta), however, stayed above ground in an attempt to solve of the mystery of life in order to save the earth. He tried and tried to create life, always falling short. When he was on the verge of giving up, the Phoenix appeared before him and told him that a miracle would occur. It turned out that the miracle would be a young man who arrived at Saruta's lab after escaping from the underground cities because his companion - an alien shapeshifter - wasn't allowed to exist. He ended up getting shot and killed by someone who followed him. The miracle occurred when the Phoenix allowed him to drink her blood and made him immortal.
Following these events, every other life on Earth died, leaving the young man alone. It was then that he realized the true pain of loneliness, with nothing to do and no-one to talk to. For billions of years he lived alone in a wasteland, unable to die. He was eventually rewarded by being able to see the rebirth of the world as it began anew and the cycle of life started over.
For me, the message of this final story wasn't very clear. Why wasn't the man simply allowed to die, instead being forced to suffer the pain of loneliness? If I had been in his shoes, seeing the world restart wouldn't have been enough to make up for billions of years of boredom. The main message of Phoenix - that immortality is a curse - came across well in the last story, but it still seemed a bit pointless compared to the earlier stories.
If you're still with me after reading the descriptions of all five stories and my thoughts, I'm sure you'll understand the difficulty of reviewing this title. On one hand, it's far more meaningful than most series out there and has none of the "moe" elements that plague anime based on a lot of the more recent stories. The mangaka clearly had some important messages about life he wanted to express and did so as best he could. But, on the other hand, the series is all over the place because of the variation between each story, and I wouldn't call any of the stories included polished. The stories were released in manga form a long time ago and, compared to the character development and the like in more recent anime, the age of some of of the stories shows. Depending on how you look at it, Phoenix is either very flawed or brilliant because it avoids the holes stories from our age fall into time and time again.
In terms of the visuals, Phoenix is very nice to look at. Someone on Amazon described the art/animation as being something he imagined Disney coming up with after "going on a bender", but I don't think that's an insult when we're talking about an anime TV series. The character designs are rather cartoony, with characters having HUGE noses and the like, but it looks very nice. It's different than most art nowadays, but not in a bad way. The worst thing you can say about the art is that the character designs of the characters in the five stories are mostly very similar, the recurring character Saruta always having the same big nose and stumpy look. The animation was pleasing, too - whenever there was action, it flowed pretty well. There were some nice fight sequences in the fourth story.
I can't really comment on the music because, honestly, I can only remember the orchestral opening. Since I've only just finished watching the series (well, last night...), that doesn't say a lot good about the soundtrack. But, although I can't remember any amazing tracks, I can't say I remember any bad music, so I suppose the soundtrack was simply good without being amazing.
To sum it up, I'm pleased I watched Phoenix, ignoring the fact it isn't highly rated and isn't a name known to many. It isn't like any of the other anime I've watched, and that's why I respect it. I've watched a ton of anime that have no messages; series that were made just to put something on TV - Phoenix isn't one of those series. And like an IGN reviewer is quoted as saying on the back of the box set, Phoenix has a quality that keeps viewers hooked, preventing them from leaving until the end. In an age where I'm used to constantly checking my DVD timer to see how much longer an episode has left to run, Phoenix was a breath of fresh air. It's far from perfect, and it isn't something I'm willing to score too highly, but it's definitely a series I'm proud to own on DVD, and one I'd recommend to those tired of all the "moe" rubbish going around.
Phoenix: 8.5/10
One last thing (honest!): I STRONGLY recommend you, the random reader who has somehow survived to this point, look into getting the box set. I imported the box set for a lowly sum of£13.99 from PlayUSA, and I'm sure Americans can get it for even less. The box set is made up of a thin box and three book-like cases, which are basically hardback book covers with plastic stuck on to hold the discs. For what is a budget set, getting these unique cases - which I haven't seen used before - is a major plus point. The case covers are even reflective, making the set appear even more expensive than it really is.』 『Throughout time, mankind has chased after the dream of immortality. The Phoenix, in the form of a bird of fire, is said to hold the key to eternal life. Great warriors, greedy princesses, ambitious scientists and ordinary people desire its power. Great wars are fought in a vain attempt to possess it and, as a result, civilizations rise and fall. Phoenix is a collection of five stories from the past, present and future. Many will perish because of their desires, and they are the lucky ones. True pain comes for those who find immortality and experience the burden of living forever.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (As one reviewer said, promising...) 『Ryoko is one of the best fighters in school. But that's OK because this is a school in which martial arts are standard curriculum and problems are solved with the fist and the sword. But when you add a alien landscape just beyond the veils of reality, special powers and demon creatures even Ryoko starts to freak out. Four episodes, tons of extras, great voice work, but a feeling that I have seen all this before. Promising but so was steam powered cars in the early 20th Century. Does that mean I should continue to buy up the anime and watch? Not sure, can't tell you. I may watch the next DVD but I'm just not hooked.』
(old biker needs a laff) 『onley seen first part , bloody good sofar , recon the rest will be a screem . and box set is dam good value』
(This is a good series) 『It's a really good yet short anime series. It kept me entertained with the humor Daisaku provided. Joshua Seth was good as Daisaku's part and David Lucas kept Shizuma's character, like in the japanese version. It may be 13 episodes long but I still like it.』
(A mixed bag, but more positives than negatives) 『Visually, the series is beautiful; furthermore, the show features excellent vocal performances (The ever-versatile Satsuki Yukino reinvents herself again to play the main character's romantic rival, Azumi...Sempai)and is strong in the department of character development. I was already a fan of the manga (And I feel the manga features stronger storytelling than the anime.), but I feel I learned additional information about the characters by watching the program. The series is also entertaining on a more subtle level, as it relentlessly mocks (Or homages) conventions such as the "Magical Girl" genre of anime and manga, fighting games, samurai cinema, and other fighting series; Nagumo and Gates, the two rival characters new to the series, are extremely reminiscent of characters from such series as "Fist of the North Star"; the trio of villains our heroes encounter in the midpoint of the series, alternately, remind me of "Yu Yu Hakusho" characters. There's even a girl dressed like certain characters from Tenchi Muyo, as well as villains at the end which seem somewhere between Raxzehphon and Evangelion entities. These references are pretty entertaining, since the show isn't built around them, but rather character development and striking visuals.
At first, I didn't "get" the fact many of the character designs created for the anime were supposed to resemble designs from other anime series, and wrote them off as unoriginal. But my attributions of unoriginality nagged at me, because the rest of the visuals in the series were so well-crafted. So the "uninspired" designs are really very funny once one realizes they're *supposed* to be that way. ^_^
The slight redesigns of the manga characers appeal to me, though I will warn they've been slightly cutified. The Demon Beasts Ryoko has to fight unfortunately lack interesting designs, one of the series' visual shortfallings; Studio Gonzo does remarkable work in many departments, but I sometimes find that, as a trend, their creature designs are a bit run-of-the-mill.
Furthermore, although developing the characters well, in terms of plot development, however, the series inadequately explains background on the conflict between the characters Nagumo and Gates, as well as the connections amongst Nagumo, Hitomi and Reiha which would help viewers enjoy the program better.
However, I felt Nagumo's "true conflict" which is revealed in the final episode, while somewhat anticlimatic (In not involving a slugfest) was very interesting because it added a philosophical bent to the series; it reminds me of the (Oft-maligned) resolution of another show from the fighting girl genre, Ikki Tousen, in that it centers on defeating fate.
In terms of DVD content, the extras are neat. There are the art galleries almost standard to anime DVDs, but in addition, a number of segments which introduce you to the Japanese voice actresses who portray Ryoko and Miyuki. I enjoyed these segments because they added a human touch to my viewing of the series.
All-in-all, I'd recommend reading the manga first, not because it's necessary to understand the series, but because it's a better story. But if you read and enjoyed the manga, the series is well-worth watching, given you can get a good deal on it.』
(Not the geatest nor the worst. It could have been better.) 『Ok, so I bought the box set because I loved the manga, and I guess because of how great the original manga was, I set my expectations too high. The series really started with a bang, and the animation for the fight scenes were way too cool; however, as the series continued some of the episodes had really slack animation. I mean it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't the greatest. Naturally I watched the whole thing and the animation almost returned to its previous glory toward the end. I tried to keep in mind how old the series was, and maybe I watch too much Anime.
There is however another interesting point I must bring up, and that's the time setting that the show takes. It seems to be after, and yet at the same time, that the manga took place, which may be kind of confusing for anyone who read the manga. I really can't give any examples without spoiling either the manga or the anime so I won't. Just take my word for it. And then there's the awkward and abrupt ending. I was kind of disappointed.
Finally I'll say this; all in all, the show is good enough not to be bad, but not great enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. Three stars are what I'll give it. I've seen much worse shows, and at the same time I've seen much better. If you ask me you should spent your forty dollars on the first four issues of the manga being published by TokyoPop. I promise the manga won't disappoint you, as for this box set, I give no guarantees. 』 『At Real Bout High School, the teachers don't break up fights - they grade them! In a school where martial arts are the standard curriculum, Ryoko takes on all challengers. Ryoko Mitsurugi is the reigning champion of the K-fight, an anything goes/any time/anywhere martial arts battle that is the signature event of Daimon High. One day, Ryoko checks her locker and finds a mysterious pendant that transports her to the alternate world of Solvania, where she battles a dragon-like "demon beast." Convinced it's all just a dream, she returns to the more pressing concern of her rivalry with Azumi for the attentions of Tatsuya, the soft-spoken captain of the kendo team.
As she travels between the Earth and Solvania, Ryoko forges a grudging alliance with brash ex K-Fight champion Shizuma "Nagi" Kusanagi. Daimon High School begins to feel like Furinken High inRanma 1/2when Azumi's Secret Flower Arrangement Club attacks Ryoko using multi-pointed flower holders as ninja weapons. Ryoko dresses up as Magical Waitress Oyster Lulu, a hilarious spoof ofSailor Moon("In the name of oysters, I'll teach you a lesson!")--with Nagi joining her in drag as Lobster Coco. Unfortunately, Aya Matsui's script fails to explain who the villains are or how the worlds of Earth and Solvania relate. The over-the-top final battle wrecks the school play, but it doesn't really resolve anything. The misadventures of the nutty cast are entertaining, even when they don't make much sense, but the conclusion leaves the viewer unsatisfied. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (It will make you want to sit thru the whole series at once!) 『This is an awsome series with plenty of swords, blood, and well thought out battles. It is a great addition to my collection of anime.』
(Ninja Scroll Series- Not as good as the original, but very close) 『I thought Ninja Scoll was the best Ninja anime that I have ever seen. When I heard there was a Ninja Scroll Series out on DVD, I had to get it. It was as good as I hoped it would be. Lots of fighting, and very brutal. You can get the entire series for dirt cheap. A definite must have, if you liked the original Ninja Scroll feature movie.』
(If you liked the movie, you will love the series!!!) 『These really are just a continuation of the Ninja Scroll original movie. They have the same types of characters with super powers that Jubei must contend with to help his new found friends. The anime quality is quite good and the voice acting isn't bad either. I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the original movie or the Basilisk series.』
(Do I like Ninja Scroll? Jubeitcha) 『Ok dumb puns aside and cute character name usage discarded, this is a solid anime series if there ever was one and does what every series should do, leaves me wanting more. Is it perfect? No, but it's quite good. The formula for Ninja Scroll the series never varies much, plot moves along, Jubei meets enemies, you get chopped suei villains for breakfast lunch and dinner. Tons of innocents die so don't get too attached and there are quite a few surprise twists courtesy of Master Kibagami and friends. Characters are interesting although some are quite undeveloped, something quite common for some anime series including the still excellent Ninja Scroll movie. The artwork is excellent unlike some other series that felt rushed (Record of Lodoss War: Tales of the Heroic Knight). The fight scenes are excellent and you can't help but love the action even if the plot is not the most amazing. Regardless of its short comings, this is still excellent anime and if you want to check out something that isn't live acting and worth the price of admission, this is a fine fine choice.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Just a review...) 『I remember watching Sailor Moon on Toonami, and absolutely loving it. This is volume one of season 3 to the series. There are repetitive scenes used throughout this season, but if you love the concept/story of Sailor Moon, that shouldn't bother you. I do recommend this volume and the series, however if you are a hardcore anime fan (that is into unedited, uncut, original japanese version material) you may find this disappointing if you watch the Japanese versions as "key plots" have been altered in the english version to make it more friendly to younger audiences.』
(CLASSIC! Best of all 5 seasons =)) 『Sailor Moon is a great series and really introduced America to anime which i believe this series helped FUEL America's addiction to anime and no longer made anime an Asian centric only hobby. It always seemed for some odd reason when it came to anime someone knew an Asian best friend who had the whole series subtitled on VHS somewhere lol. After the final 13 episodes of the 2nd season finished airing on TV it seemed all hope was lost to ever see the final 3 remaining seasons hit the US shore. Lucky for the fans after a few years since Sailor Moon R (Season 2) finished airing on TV word went ram pit that the 3 Sailor Moon movies were coming to the US dubbed/sub along with the Super and SuperS series hitting US waters as well with individual volumes being released month after month back to back. During these releases a phenomenon was taking place. VHS was starting to fade away and DVD was taking control front and center at a slow pace but definitely an evolution was happening. Anyways i had seen the entire series of Super and SuperS way before the official US release but i saw only the subtitled version. Super (Season 3) was a great series and in my opinion the best out of all the 5 seasons. I was so looking forward to the dubbed version only to hear the change in the lead actress which ruined everything. Despite a few changes in the cast and the remaining Japanese soundtrack on the episodes it's still a good watch for any Sailor Moon fan. Luckily these DVDs come with both English and Japanese audio. Season 3 is not as beautifully animated as season 4 or 5 but great none the less. This set introduces us to the new villains of the season (A crazy professor), the professors daughter who has a secret, and the outer 4 remaining scouts finally appear, along with new powers and transformations. Check this season out, it is discontinued and heavily over priced but it's worth it for any SM fans. Such a shame that season 5 will never hit US shores.』

(Sailor Moon S rocks!!!) 『...I am really tired of all you people complaining "Waaaaah, Uranus and Neptune are COU-SIIIIIIIIIIINS!!!" Honestly. They wanted to make this a show for kids... after all, in America adults/teenagers don't routinely watch cartoons, so they aimed it for kids, and had to water it down a little. (Careful!) 『If you're thinking of buying the Geneon Signature Series Version of these heart collections, DON'T! Not unless you want to pay less and don't care about the PACKAGING. When I bought it, I figured the cover would have that ugly red logo on the front.....and it did. I didn't know that it wouldn't have a reversable cover! There's nothing on the back of it! Just blank. The CD itself doesn't have a beautiful picture of Usagi, like it's supposed to. Instead, it's all red with white letters. And instead of the correct insert flap with a picture of Usagi and Mamoru, there's an insert advertising other DVDs! I wouldn't have bought these if I knew of the horrible packaging.>_So...unless you don't care how the DVD cover looks to you, you should buy this. But for those of you who know how beautiful the REVERSABLE cover, CD, and insert flap is supposed to be, please just buy the regular DVDs. Even if it is twice the cash.
The four stars are all for the show NOT the DVD. 』 『High school entrance exams are approaching, and Serena and her friends Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina (Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako in Japanese) need to study--especially Serena, whose grades have never been good. But Serena is easily distracted. When Haruka appears on the scene, she and the other Scouts immediately fall for him--only to discover "he" is a girl who often dresses as a boy. Haruka is almost always seen with Michiru, but there's nothing to the relationship. Serena is also busy leading the Sailor Scouts into the battle. The evil Professor Tomoe and his assistant Kaorinite keep unleashing shape-shifting daimons to steal the crystalline hearts of the pure, which will enable them to rule the world. The Scouts and Tuxedo Moon need the help of Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus to defeat the evil doers. These powerful, aloof warriors are searching the world for three mysterious and potent talismans. The combined power of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Moon produces the redoubtable weapon, the "Spiral Heart Moon Rod." Many fans rank the Sailor Moon "S" season (the third), which comprises episodes 90 to 127, as the best in the series. More cynical viewers may notice that reused footage makes up about one-third of each episode. Edited versions of these episodes played on the Cartoon Network (and are available on VHS). These uncut episodes are rated 13 and older for violence and brief nudity.--Charles Solomon』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great~!) 『I truly was happy, everything came true of what the person put down on your product. I'm a happy man, and glad to say that this item is great and happly paid for and happy he got it.』
(Head-bending series in true Kon Satoshi style) 『I am a Kon Satoshi devotee. I never know quite where he is going to take me, and I rarely understand what happened even when I reach that destination, but it is always a hell of a ride.
"Paranoia Agent" is Kon's first attempt at an ongoing series. The plot was stitched together out of left-over ideas he had from his feature films, like Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers, ideas that he liked but couldn't figure out how to fit them into the various movies. Working with the extended length of a television series, Kon was able to explore and expand on all of these ideas, fitting them into an over-arching plot.
The series has an ensemble cast, each with a complete story arc. Sagi Tsukiko is a young female character designer who has created the wildly popular character Maromi. An introspective and lonely girl, Sagi is the first to encounter the phenomenon known as Shonen Bat, a roller-skating punk with a crocked golden baseball bat who strikes those who have come to a desperate point in their lives. Detectives Ikari Keiichi and Maniwa Mitsuhiro try to hunt down the attacker, but find themselves drawn into a mysterious world beyond understanding.
"Paranoia Agent" is very much a Kon Satoshi series, and if you like his stuff then you are going to love this. All of his favorite themes are on display such as duality (Chono Harumi is a girl with a split personality. One a nice, sweet office lady, the other an aggressive and sexy prostitute.), identity (Detective Maniwa gets drawn so far into the plot he loses himself to become the super-hero Radar Man), real vs. unreal (the character Maromi seems innocent enough at first...). It is nice that Kon had the extra length to play with all of these themes, and while some of the episodes seem like interludes every single second of screen time is worth watching.』
(Adult Anime) 『The first two disks (eps. 1-7) are a thrill ride, focussing on different characters who are involved with a psychotic preteen called Shonen Bat (little slugger), who careens around with a bent gold-painted aluminum bat while on Rollerblades and bashes people who are psychologically damaged, and also with an animated dog and his creator, who are the connecting thread throughout the episodes.
The third disk (eps. 8-10) is not so good. It diverges from the main story to deal with three people who half-want to commit suicide (boring), some gossipeuses, who create talltales about Shonen Bat (ok, but unnecessary), and then a meta-episode about the art of animation narrated by that cartoon dog--and with an unbearably screechy voice (excruciating).
The fourth disk returns to the main story, such as it is. It ends dramatically, but fails to tell us what happened to some of the characters we've met along the way. It feels rushed, too. It's as if (and maybe this was precisely the case) the creators were told that they must wrap everything up in 13 episodes.
The animation is superb. The use of color, light, and shadow, is breathtaking.』
("A makeshift salvation is nothing but deception") 『At it's basest level; "Paranoia Agent" is the story of a girl and her dog. But before you even begin to understand it on that level you will be subjected to a case study on the fragility of the human psyche, the domination of it by media in today's world, the various forms of escapism devised by the human mind, and the power of an animated series to bring together storytelling and metaphor in ways that are impossible in nearly any other format. This is simpy one of the most thought-provoking series of any kind out there and anybody who thinks that the anime genre is split between kid's stuff and pornography should consider this the ultimate vindicator.
"Paranoia Agent" uses an unusual style of narrative. Each episode follows a different protagonist or group and examines their particular brand of escapism/psychosis. Each character is related in some way to one or more of the characters previously met and thus the overall story grows. The binding elements are two characters: the merchandising sensation Maromi the cartoon dog, and a mysterious figure known as "Shonen Bat" ("Lil Slugger" in the English version)- a rollerblading menace who assaults people with a bent baseball bat. Both are symbols of the pervasiveness and power of modern media in warping people's minds and perceptions to the point that an imaginary child-thug can become a murderous demon and otherwise reasonable people can be incited to riot over a child's toy. The characters range from an overwieght otaku who is WAY too into his cosplay dolls (way underused) to a woman with split personalites who threaten each other using her answering machine to a trio of internet friends whimsically attempting (and always failing) to commit suicide together. Then there are the two detectives. The no-nonsense cop whose inability to see past practical reality and recognize metaphor eventually causes him to escape reality altogether in favor of an old-fashioned two-dimensional dream world, and the other who indulges in the world of fantasy and fiction without being consumed by it and becomes the only one who can see the truths of Maromi and Shonen Bat. This is a brilliant illustration of the power of fantasy to portray truths of the world to those with open minds and the power of a closed mind to blind you to those same truths. These and many more characters' stories intersect each other often and help to build the larger narrative which climaxes with the media's self-contradictory cocktail of paranoia-mongering, and mind-numbing comsumer-based escapist comfort becomes a single all-consuming deluge that all began -and must end- with the same little girl.
Sound complicated? It is, but even if all this talk of metaphors and psychology turns you off, "Paranoia Agent" is still a very fun series that comes highly recommended. There is a ton of black humor, great art and animation, interesting characters with well-written dialogue, one of the best opening credit sequences out there, and much more. And my two year-old absolutely LOVES Maromi. This is a show that can be enjoyed on the surface level, but it that really pays off when you delve into it's social and psychological depths. If you're up for watching one of the best anime series out there, put his at the top of your list.』
(good, but overrated) 『this is certainly better than lots of other anime series, however it's far from great. i agree with reviews that claim some episodes are a total waste of time. With the psycho-anime world getting more and more creative and sophisticated this series has yet to catch up.』 『"When the darkness overcomes the heart, Little Slugger appears...." After the first victim's story, the police felt the overly stressed woman was having a breakdown and lied to cover-up for some crime. However, after the third and fourth attacks upon unrelated victims led to the same description of a young attacker with a golden baseball bat and in-line skates, the police had to wonder- is the "Lil' Slugger" real or a sinister phantom? Box Set contains all four volumes in series.』 『Dark, unsettling, and intriguing,Paranoia Agentconfirms Satoshi Kon's position as one of the most interesting directors currently working in Japan. A baseball bat-wielding adolescent randomly attacks five people in Tokyo, each of whom is grappling with a serious problem. Toy designer Tsukiko endures tremendous pressure to repeat her previous success; bottom-feeding journalist Kawazu desperately needs money. Popular sixth grader Yuuichi feels threatened by the new kid in his class, the dumpy nerd Usshi. Yuuichi's tutor Harumi is a compassionate scholar by day; at night, she becomes Maria, a sleazy hooker. The seemingly purposeless violence of Lil' Slugger (originallyShounen Bat, literally "Bat Boy"), also disrupts the lives of police detectives Maniwa and Karino, and their corrupt boss Hirukawa. As he did inPerfect Blue, Kon deliberately blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy: Does Tsukikio's stuffed toy really talk to her? Which is Harumi's true personality? A noteworthy series from an important artist. This set includes all four volumes of the series. I first saw it while it was still in Japan. when I received this I was delighted to find that when you switch it over to watch it in Japanese they kept the original character voices. I love the plot and the character development. I love the idea of slowly gaining experience of the world around them. This is a must watch Anime and I am waiting anxiously for the next volumes to be released.』
(Hunter x Hunter FINALLY makes its debut in America!) 『This all time favorite anime series of mine is finally making its debut in this 15 episode 3 disc set. And myself as well as many others can finally let out a cheer for it's release. This series follows the adventures of 4 main characters(Gon, Killua, Kurapica, and Leorio) and their quest of passing the Hunter Exams and becoming Hunters themselves. I can not recommend this series enough. If you do not want to blind buy go rent this. I am sure you will not regret it!!!』
(Not as good as the manga) 『I was very excited when the Hunter x Hunter anime series was going to be on sale in the U.S. I am a huge fan of the manga series and I expected great things from the anime, but I was disappointed. The series is filled with nothing but filler episodes and small sections in the manga's story chapters get turned into entire episodes and the episode feels 'dragged out.' An example of this is in episode 1 when Gon needs to catch the master of the swamp so he can apply to the hunter exam. In the manga, this is easily covered in five pages, but in the anime its dragged out into an entire episode that makes the ordeal very emotional and places huge emphasis on Gon's fishing rod, which is non-existent in the manga. Filler episodes are frequent between the episodes. In the second episode, instead of having Gon go directly to the ship for the hunter exam, a filler episode is given in which Gon and Leorio team up to save some animals and barely make it to the ship on time. I believe that an anime is not entitled to follow the manga series by the book and that the director is allowed to interpret the manga as they see fit (an example of this being done well is in the 'Bleach' anime) but I don't think that's the case here. The plus side of the anime is hearing the correct pronunciation of the characters names which I practically have been saying wrong since I became a fan of the series. Aunt Mito's role is increased a bit, I always felt that as Gon's foster mother she could have had a bigger role and she was kind of ignored in the manga. If your an absolute fan of the series then there is no stopping you and this anime is a must have. But if you are strictly an anime person, I suggest you skip this purchase and buy something else.』
(A fun anime adventure series that features a lot of action and a lot of heart!) 『The `HUNTER X HUNTER' series is one of the most popular and long-running manga series in Japan. Written and designed by Yoshihiro Togashi (creator of `Yu Yu Hakusho'), the manga series began in 1998 and is still ongoing to this day.
As for the animated series, the 62-episode TV series which was shown on FUJI TV began in October 1999 and ended in March 2001.
As the series is celebrating its 10th Year Anniversary, it's fitting that finally one of Japan's beloved anime series makes its way to the US with a 15-episode vol. 1 box set courtesy of Shonen Jump Home Video.
The first volume focuses on a young boy named Gon who is rescued by a hunter, Kite.
Kite is looking for another fellow Hunter named Ging Freecss. A man that Kite served as an apprentice for who has a gift of being able to communicate with animals but also a reputation of being one of the greatest hunters ever.
Kite learns that Gon has the same abilities as Ging and wants to learn more about this young boy and discovering that Gon, may be the son of the well-known hunter.
Gon was told his father died long ago but learns that he is still alive and immediately wants to follow his father's footsteps by becoming a hunter and also hoping he can find and meet his father.
A hunter is a person who is granted special privileges in the world. They can roam in areas that the public is not allowed to visit, they can go to establishments without having to pay for it, they have a license to hunt and do other jobs that are only specific to those who have a hunter's license.
But not everyone can become a hunter. Only a few become hunters and in this case, only one hunter can be chosen. Also, to make it more challenging, only a few make it past certain tests. But for Gon, he is determined to follow his father's footsteps and will do what it takes to become a hunter.
Gon is different from other hunters since he was raised by a loving relative and lived in a village where there has not been much strife or conflict, so he is a bit naive about the world around him. In fact, his motivation in becoming a hunter is so opposite of what other hunters are wanting it for. But Gon's pure and positive attitude seems to have an effect on the people that he meets.
As for Gon, he has the ability to communicate with animals like his father and carries a fishing pole that acts like a weapon and helps him swing to different areas. He is also learning more and more about his abilities as he continues on in his hunter training with his friends.
Along the way, he meets three others who will be taking the hunter exam and the four form a friendship and become a circle of friends helping each other out. Gon befriends:
Leorio - Gon meets Leorio, a man who wears a business suit and sunglasses who has a hot temper but has a good heart. He seems to want to be a hunter because of money but why he wants the money is explained in this first volume. Leorio is a great fighter and if his hunger is full, he exhibits tremendous strength.
Kurapika - Gon meets Kurapika while traveling on ship to another island. Kurapika tends to get at odds with Leorio in the beginning because both have different reasons for wanting a Hunter license. For Kurapika, his motivation to get a hunter's license is for revenge and it is explained during his storyline on volume 1. Kurapika is intelligent, a balanced fighter and also is a conjurer and specialist with the ability to materialize objects with his imagination.
Killua Zoldyck - The fourth member of the team is Killua, a mysterious boy that finds Gon's purity interesting and thus immediately, because of how Gon is, Killua immediately becomes friends with the three. Killua comes from an upbringing of an assassin and is a trained killer. He somewhat has a split personality. He can be seen as a happy, young person intrigued by people but when in battle, he can turn and become a deadly individual who enjoys the thrill of killing. Killua is learning to control himself and his weaknesses as shown in this first volume.
The first volume is literally an introduction to the four friends who want to become hunters and during their adventures of traveling to a variety of islands and areas, are faced with immediate and deadly challenges that they must be prepared for. You learn of their motivations of becoming a hunter but how they learn to help each other in achieving success during their long training.
VIDEO&AUDIO:
The animation of "HUNTER X HUNTER" has similarities to Togashi's other popular work "Yu Yu Hakusho" in terms of character designs. Also, with the series created back in 1999, you expect to see quality of a TV anime series created in the 90s completely different to the digital colorful quality of anime TV series of today. So, you do get noise on the video as would be expected from an older animated TV series.
But for an anime TV series created in the late 90s, you get a lot of shading through the backgrounds and dungeon areas. You get to see the luscious backgrounds painted. The cool aspect of "HUNTER X HUNTER" animation-wise is that the main characters are continually on the move, so you get something different with each episode in terms of scenery and backgrounds.
I watched the series in both Japanese (with English subtitles) and via English dub. Both voice acting tracks are well done and as for the English dub, I've always felt that VIZ media are typically on top of their selections for voice actors with series like "Naruto", "Bleach" and "Death Note". The same can be said for "HUNTER X HUNTER", the voice actors for Gon and friends are well done.
I typically dislike children or teenagers who sound too much older than they are in anime series but I'm happy that the voice acting was well done for Gon and the others.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
There really isn't much in terms of extras. You get a trailer for Shonen Jump Manga, Shonen Jump Home Video but fortunately you can find the production storyboards (a total of 15).
I suppose that the theme of a young boy and his friends trying to get a license can be compared to a series like "Pokemon" but with "HUNTER X HUNTER", there are no monsters being caught and although Gon is a young guy, pure-at-heart, his friends are trying to overcome their own personal issues from their past.
But what makes "HUNTER X HUNTER" a fun series is the fact that you have four individuals who are so different from each other, they learn about themselves and about others through their friendship. Having to work as a team during their training and their adventures and knowing that not many people make it far in their training.
The first volume focuses more on the character development on each character and their team dynamics. But with so many episodes still left in the series, you can only expect that the adventures will become more difficult, challenging and that the storyline will continue to get even more wilder and interesting as it progresses.
With the odds against them, instead of working as individuals, the four work as a team despite their differences and with a storyline that features a good balance of humor, action but also some seriousness, "HUNTER X HUNTER" is an enjoyable adventure-based anime series thus far.』
(I want to cry) 『I can't believe Hunter x Hunter the anime has finally crossed over to the US waters. This is my top most favorite anime of all time, and the gateway anime that lead me to the anime addiction I now bare.
As mentioned by one of the other reviewers, if you are looking for a story with great character development, enough action and a great story, the first anime I will always recommend is hunter x hunter.
』 『Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasure, magical beasts, and even humans. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Gon might be a country boy, but he has high aspirations. Despite his aunt's protest, Gon decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a legendary Hunter. The journey begins on the long, arduous road to the Exam Hall, where he meets Leorio and Kurapika, two applicants with the same determination. Gon, the 12-year-old hero of the popular adventure, wants to follow in the footsteps of his absent father and become a Hunter. To obtain the requisite license for this demanding profession, he and hundreds of other applicants must undergo a rigorous and often deadly battery of tests that demand stamina, dexterity, intelligence, and imagination. As he begins the exams, Gon makes three friends with complimentary skills that enable them to overcome the obstacles. Aspiring doctor Leorio provides first aid; Kurapika carefully analyzes situations; the scion of a family of assassins, Killua possesses deadly knowledge. What half-pint Gon lacks in size, he makes up in speed, agility and pluck. His father's old fishing rod is the only weapon he needs. In the first episodes, the mismatched quartet tackles challenges that range from seeing through an elaborate ruse to killing and roasting gigantic wild pigs. The endless squabbles between Leorio and Kurapika provide comic relief. Unlike the brawling Yusuke inYu Yu Hakusho, Gon has a reflective side that balances his enthusiasm. He's not as funny as Yusuke, but he's more likable. Gon recognizes that a hypothetical question on a test could pose a serious ethical dilemma in the real world, a thought that would never occur to Yusuke.Hunter X Hunterhas been eagerly awaited in the US, andotakuwill find this highly entertaining series was worth the wait.
