The boxset comes with some unique artwork and 3 mini posters that all look great! This show is still waiting for it's fourth season Please support by purchasing this set and future releases!』
(Good, fun anime) 『I wasn't sure what to expect from this anime which I watched with my 10 year old daughter. Both of us ended up enjoying it a lot. It's in a girlie (Shojo), crazy style with lots of screeching, squealing and wild antics. The relationship between the two main characters is sweet (although a little aggressive!) and the story line is nice. Our major disappointment with the series was how short it was ... only 3 discs. The story was a bit 'compressed' and had a lot of potential. It would have been better if it had been told over four or five discs.
I think the sexual references in this anime are pretty strong, too. If you're concerned about this sort of thing then this isn't an anime to watch with your child.
We are big fans of anime and I wouldn't this as highly as others in the same style, e.g., Fruits Basket, but it's good if your expectations aren't too high.
The packaging is good. The box is high quality, sturdy cardboard with good artwork. Inside are three standard DVDs with a small picture booklet inside each one. The covers are reversible. 』
(An Entertaining Fantasy Series Filled With Chuckles And A Dash Of Romance) 『The series is to be taken with the knowledge that it's neither an all round action anime or drama anime but more of a mix of light drama, magical abilities, and a dash of romance. The characters are very entertaining to watch and seeing the situations they get into most of the times will leave you with a chuckle. The main characters Louise a young female aristocrat with almost zero magical talent thus earning her nickname Louise The Zero inadvertently summons a young man from our world to hers in a botched summoning spell to call for personal familiar to appear to her( A familiar being a mystical animal or normal animal but with unique qualities that helps her or his wizard master). Of course the young man Hiraga Saito neither knowing what's going on or where he is finds himself out of his league and under the overbearing dominion of his so called master, but later as he adjusts to his new world he finds he has a unique ability to fight with unusual power and ability(Nothing truly superhuman). The hijinx that happens between Louise and Saito as they slowly begin to at first befriend than fall in love will leave you laughing and feeling a little heartfelt tug throughout the series. The series is widescreen and the cast for the English voice overs were very good for their roles as was of course the Japanese cast, the extras aren't much just the standard trailers and textless intro/ending songs. There is a lot of fan service in the series itself but nothing to r-rated to worry about and nothing to steamy beyond kissing for the most part so no need to unduly worry about anything to badly. The one thing I appreciate with Funimation doing is having the complete series set be a decent design, meaning the set is three standard dvd cases put into a thin cardboard box sleeve with the main female character on both sides instead of just doing the set like their recent complete box sets(Air Gear, Guyver, Mushi Ishi to just name a few). So if you're looking a mystical magical series or just looking for a chuckle or two for the price of this set here's a choice to take a look at for yourself...』
(Comedy, drama and some action mixed in. What do you get?) 『Comidramaction! Think of this series as a light Inuyasha, just without the demons and "sword calls" (you know like Wind Scar but there are spell calls...but that makes more sense :) The story revolves mostly around Louise (who sucks at magic) and her familiar Saito (who happens to be a human of another dimension). Starts off with some comedy, goes into some drama near the middle of the series and then action. Does it do it well, I think so. Not to much of drama or action, but I don't think the creators of this series wanted to make it too dramatic or with too much action. It mainly is a comedy (which is a good call imho). The first series is definitely a keeper (not too fond of the last series they came out with..too eicchi and no focus on story, but that's another review!). Ok animation (could be better.) Music well, ehhh it's ok, but nothing that really stands out. Voice acting is good (I watched it in Japanese with subs so I can't say anything about the dubs.) In all I say 3.5 for a good story line. I recommend it to 13 yr's older and up.』
(A fun show for the anime fan) 『OK, so I really didn't know much about this series before I purchased it. The DVD formatting isn't great, but it's not bad either. The voice acting is actually quite good (if you're an anime fan you might even recognize a few voices from other series) and the show itself is really creatively written and orchestrated. The music fits pretty well too, though it's not quite on par with some of the other shows from around the same time. All in all, I give it 4/5 stars.』 『In a magical land where two moons shine in the night sky, one young student in the magic school, Louise, has acquired the nickname of "Zero". Why? Her "zero" talent! With a near perfect failure rate for her spells, the shock that Louise's summoning spell works equals the surprise of her new familiar, a human boy from Japan! When the boy begins exhibiting some unexpected abilities, why do the teachers get so nervous?』 『Louise la Vallière the heroine of the supernatural comedyFamiliar of Zero(2006) is a sort of Harriet Potter, studying sorcery at a wizard's academy on another planet. Her classmates refer to her as "Louise Zero" because she can't get a single spell to work properly. Second year students are required to summon a familiar that will serve them for the rest of their careers as mages: Instead of a mythical animal, Louise calls up Saito, a teen-age boy from Japan. Although she insults him, beats him, and makes him do endless chores--especially washing her inexhaustible supply of frilly undies--Saito soon falls for Louise (and vice versa, although she's loath to admit it). Somewhere in the background lurks an underdeveloped plot involving a princess, a revolt, evil courtiers, a ring stolen from a lake spirit, and lot of other supernatural trappings that don't add up to much. To take up the slack, the filmmakers fill the screen with jokes about Louise's flat chest, panty shots, jiggle shots of her overendowed classmate Kirche, and bath scenes. Not a weighty series by any means, butFamiliar of Zerodelivers plenty of fan service for those who crave it. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hellsing) 『the Hellsing complete boxed set arrived in a timely manner, and was well packaged. This was gotten as a Christmas present for my grandson.』
(Great, but too short) 『This was a great series. Too bad it was only one season. Ended it like they thought there was going to be a second season, and there should have been. Alucard was one of the best vampires ever, not too good and not too bad. On the side of good, but with his own set of morals. Just the way a vampire should be. Very powerful individual. Well worth watching. Not for preteens, a bit mature.』
(A Vampire series I can watch) 『Out of many Vampire series I bearably watch, Hellsing and Vampire Hunter D are the only ones that make the list. It really isn't much about the art, the story line that is great (by today's standards they are "weak"), but rather the characters that bring in some complex attitudes and feelings in this world of vampires. Alcuard, is pretty much your anti-hero; cold blooded and really doesn't care if humans die as long as he has his "fun." To him it's all about fighting the strongest of the strongest and satisfying his urge for blood. Seras Victoria the other main character on the other hand tries to fight the urges she feels to kill and maim, unlike Alcuard who follows his true feelings. Integra Hellsing, the leader of the Hellsing organization is just one tough cookie. To her killing, hunting vampires, keeping her men alive, and maintaining her family's image is much more important than anything else. As you can see Hellsing is filled with interesting characters that just completely make this a great series to watch despite the somewhat lacking storyline and decade old art. Another thing I found really well suited was the choice of using very English voices (for the dub) that, in my honest opinion, suits it very well. Heck even the crazy regenerating father had his Irish accent as well. I can say for sure this anime is a solid 4. I would not recommend this for small kids (12 and under) because it is very very violent and does have some adult situations (no nudity, but "other adult situations.") I also would recommend Hellsing ultimate, which sticks closer to the original story and IMHO, is superior to this series, but I definitely do recommend this.』
(GREAT ANIMATION - POINTLESS STORY) 『Hellising is an exciting feast for the eyes and a stunning display of animated action. It is also gratuitously bloody and rather pointless as a story. It has perhaps the most ridiculous plot I've yet seen in any anime. It simply doesn't make sense. Hellsing, apparently a secret organization formed to fight evil creatures, particularly vampires, employs one in its service. There is never any clear understanding of why a vicious brutal sadistic and very powerful vampire like Alucard ( yes... it's Dracula spelled backwards...) binds himself into the service of the Hellsing organization , or more precisely to it's attractive ( human ) female leader Integra. Somehow he was "Defeated" by Integra's ancestor Abraham Van Helsing and then "swore" service to him and his ancestors. Yet Alucard hardly seems defeated at all. Anyway, the series consists of Alucard fighting off various attempts to awaken undead monstrosities or to attack the Hellsing organization directly, engaging in battle at Integra's orders. She gives him a mission and some sort of code word as to how much force or violence he is permitted to use to complete the task. Again, VERY strange, and rather pointless. The only reason I can see why she would want Alucard to limit his attacks is to build up excitement in the series at wonderment over just how powerful he really is. And she does just that. As the series progresses Integra allows Alucard more and more leeway in the use of his powers until a final climatic battle with another very powerful vampire, when she basically orders him give it everything he's got. Ever since Bram Stoker wrote Dracula there has been an attempt to romanticize vampires as reluctant heroes tormented by the limitations of their vile existence. Looking at Alucard's power and ferocity as he fights, one can only wonder what horror would ensue if he ever decided to use his power for evil. This series is well worth watching for the beauty and detail of the animated fight sequences. They are breathtakingly fast and dramatic. The angles at which the perspective carries the viewer can only be done in animation. Just don't expect the story itself to make much sense.

Don't let that discourage you though the episodes are still entertaining to watch as you see Inu yasha and the gang try and find clues on Naraku's whereabouts and during their travels confront demons no longer afraid to show themselves since Naraku isn't around to absorb or destroy them, also you'll have the usual minor villains around trying to do their own vile plans that the hero's must defeat. The animation is clean and clear with no complaints and as always the voice actors/actresses for both the Japanese and English cast did great, the only thing I can find some fault in is the price I got this when it was on sale at a lower price and since I already had two dvds of the season I felt that it was a pretty good deal instead of buying the rest of the season one dvd at a time. Some friends and people have asked is there a difference in video quality or audio with these box sets than the single dvds they've already bought?, and for that I would say no the video and audio are pretty much the same except that as expected the dvds of the box sets have more episodes on their dvds than the single dvds you separately. So if you've already got this season on dvd than pass this set over there won't be much difference and it will just be a waste of money, but if you've only bought one or two dvds or haven't gotten this season at all yet than of course get it and while you won't see Naraku the enjoyment of the episodes will more than make up for it...』
(A fan of the series...) 『Okay. First this series is certainly not worth $100 or even close to it, so try to get it 50% off at least. I am a HUGE fan of the series and especially of Sesshomaru. These episodes are still good even with being filler episodes. Jeesh people. Yes they are fillers, but where is the problem with that? Is more episodes of Inuyasha that bad? Not for me. I absolutely love it. The producers of the Inuyasha series simply started early and caught up too fast with Inuyasha's creator Rumiko Takahashi. So, they had to do some improvising and instead of waiting for her to get further enough along, they created fillers. This is the same thing that happened with season 7, but they decided not to make another season full of fillers, so they dropped it. Now, answer me this: Would you have preferred them to drop it after Season 3. I certainly wouldn't and I really wished that they would have gone ahead and made another season after 7 of fillers instead of dropping it. Besides, this isn't a bad season IF you like the show. Believe me this is a good season. I love Jaken Falls Ill. It is so funny. Take it from me. It is worth the buy, but not for full price. Inuyasha - Season 4 Box Set』
(Not as good as the previous seasons but it is still awesome!) 『This season was pretty good! But, there is not as much action in it as the others had but its still one of my favorite seasons because there are a lot of hilarious episodes in this that make me and my best friend laugh OUT loud! But there are serious episodes in this too!
This season is about how modern-day schoolgirl Kagome and half- demon Inuyasha and friends continue their quest through fuedal-era japan to find and vanquish the evil demon Naraku and gather all the shards of the Shikon Jewel. Along the way, they are befriended and bedeviled by an array of characters: Koga of the wolf demon tribe, mischievous magic- wielding monkey sprites, and an old lady exorcist of questionable abilities. SEE! it is a good season!
This box set has: the 18 episodes of inuyasha season 4, stereo, bilingual (japanese&english), english subtitles, scene-access menu, inuyasha character introduction, and the textless opening and ending.
GREAT SEASON! You have to add this to your collection!』
(Personally, I like the Off-Topic, Lighter Episodes) 『Alright, let me start off by saying:
I bought this DVD set from Best Buy, and paid... I think 95.00 for it. BUT.. i thought it was because it came with "Miroku's Prayer Beads" A little re-creation of the beads Miroku wears around his right arm. They were fun to play with, and if I bought them, I would have paid 12.00 for them... so all in all, i didn't feel too jipped by the price of this season.
Anywhoo.. I saw a lot of negative complaints about this season, and here are my thoughts:
Yes, this Set contains about 18 episodes or so. This was the biggest dissapointment to me BECAUSE.. the bulk of the episodes were really light-hearted and silly. In most of the seasons i feel i HAVE to watch episode after episode because they end so abruptly, in the middle of a fight. These episodes stand alone very well, and there were no Naraku heavy episodes (since he was in hiding). The reason this is my favorite season is because of that. I wish it was a longer season, but im glad that the episodes weren't all linked together to the point where you have to keep watching and watching.
Long story short:
- If you wanted a LOT of episodes for your money, you will be dissapointed. - If you like episodes that are more up-beat, cute/silly, or back in the "present" time, this is a great set for you!
I love my prayer beads though... i've not seen any others for sale, so im wondering why I got some on my Season 4 set o_o; Maybe it was Viz's way of making up for the lack of episodes, lol!』
(Not as strong as the previous Inuyasha DVD box sets) 『This Inuyasha box set contains four DVDs, and has all eighteen episodes that comprise the fourth season of the series. The first two discs contain five episodes, the third disc contains four episodes, and the fourth disc includes four episodes and the special features.
The first special feature is labeled as "Character Introductions." This is a roughly three-minute piece that introduces the characters of Kagome, Inuyasha, Kikyo, Sesshomaru, Myoga, Shippo, Miroku, Naraku, and Sango (although Sango is never mentioned by name). By seeing the characters that are featured in this piece, as well as the footage used in it, I assume this was put together after the first season of the series. It feels like this feature was included because they needed something to fill out the special features menu. The thinking that probably went into this was that since this wasn't used for any of the previous box sets, to go ahead and throw it on here to say there are three special features instead of two.
The next feature is "Textless Openings." These are textless versions of both of the openings that appear on this box set, and they are put back-to-back as one piece. However, the textless version of the first opening already appeared on the box set for the third season, so it seemed rather pointless to include it here as well.
The last feature is "Textless Endings." Just like the "Textless Openings," this includes textless versions of both of the endings that appear on this set. The textless version of the first ending already appeared on the box set for season three, so I question why it was included.
This particular season of Inuyasha didn't seem to progress the story much, if at all. While some of the episodes were entertaining, they really weren't that important to the overall story. This was rather disappointing, especially after all of the character development and story progression that took place during the third season. In a lot of respects, the fourth season of Inuyasha feels more like a "filler" season than anything else.
If you're a fan of Inuyasha and want to have all of the episodes on DVD, then you need to acquire this set. However, I'm not entirely convinced that this particular set is worth the retail price (as of this writing, the set is retailing for around $90, which is the same price as the first three sets).』 『Come along for a timeless adventure in season four ofINUYASHA! Modern-day schoolgirl Kagome and half-demon Inuyasha and friends continue their quest through feudal-era Japan to find and vanquish the evil demon Naraku and gather all the shards of the Shikon Jewel. Bilingual: English dub and Japanese with English subtitles.
Clean opening and ending.
Special footage (20-25 mins.)』
『As Rumiko Takahashi's "Feudal Fairy Tale" continues, the main storyline about recapturing the fragments of the Shikkon Jewel recedes and shorter adventures come to the fore. At the end of season 3, Inu-Yasha destroyed the magical barrier protecting his enemy Naraku: the evil demon fled, leaving no trail. Naraku's absence allows dozens of minor demons to emerge from hiding and cause problems that Kagome, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Inu-Yasha must undo. An eccentric exorcist tangles with Miroku and the imprisoned spirit of a lovely princess; the demon Orchidayu creates fake Shikkon Jewels in an effort to strengthen his servants. Some of the adventures take a comic turn. When Kagome's younger brother develops his first crush on a classmate, he asks Inu-Yasha's advice about how to approach the girl. (Asking the terminally insensitive Inu-Yasha for romantic advice is about as sensible as asking a vegetarian how to cook a pot roast.) A shape-shifting raccoon spirit impersonates Miroku so accurately, he gets the lecherous monk in trouble with the women of two villages. By this point, the characters inInu-Yashahave become so familiar, their antics feel entertaining even when they don't really advance the plot. Although this package is labelledFourth Season Box Set, the opening animation and song change after episode 95, suggesting there's some overlap. First i'd like to say that this series is not a gory hack-n-slash with shotouts with zombies demons and aliens being resurected to take over the world. Nope not at all, this series is likely to have alot in comon with the people who watch animes for the Mature Humor. the Series is basicaly about what hapens to a person if he shuts himself away from the world and the toll it can take on the mind. It has alot finer points to it that you normaly don't see in animes like the *Real Life Factor* no magic, no guns, no swords, well actualy it does have those things but its all in guys mind. There is lots of sexual humor... well I ant gunna write all day soo i'll get to the point.
Its a Psychologicaly Hilariuse Anime.
Its full of things that people would connect and relate too.
Its a fairly deep complex story that can throw people off which may lead to people misjudging it.
Its a College Student Must Watch!
yeah, im lazy so i'll stop here.』
(For Those Who Like Their Comedy Twisted) 『There are some anime properties that you really can't imagine working in any other medium. Sure anime is very closely related to its manga cousin but comics fail to deliver when things really get zany and personable. Welcome to the N-H-K is exactly one such property. It's so unique on so many levels that it's actually hard to believe it came out of the typically conservatively regarded Gonzo studios. But before we get ahead of ourselves here, let's take a look at the hard facts.
Originally released by ADV Films, Funimation has recently acquired the rights to the show and has wasted little time in getting a Complete Series release out to the public. Coming in at a total runtime of 600 minutes, Welcome to the N-H-K the Complete Series spans 4 discs and comes packaged as a pair of thin packs within a cardboard slipcase.
The show wears an appropriate TV MA (17+) rating, which is surprising should you base the show on the previews alone (a more accurate depiction of what's in store would be to check out the cover art and its foaming can of beer, pair of scantily clad women, and lead character looking slightly neurotic).
Language options are typical sub&dub meaning the option of original Japanese dialog track (stereo) or an English dub (5.1 Dolby Surround) and English subtitles available under either language choice.
Extras are limited to textless songs and a host of Funimation trailers.
I'll do my best to summarize the story without giving away any spoilers. The viewer is introduced to Sato, a college dropout who has just about had all he can take of society. So withdrawn from society is our hero that he locks himself up in his dreary apartment where his very grip on reality is becoming more and more twisted by the day.
His own delusions coupled to his lack of outside contact result in his becoming convinced that he is the subject of a vast conspiracy designed keep him under wraps by the secretive agency known as the N-H-K.
Like most mentally ill individuals, being a delusion-suffering recluse results in a twist of incredible fortune when a friendly, pretty, and just generally good hearted young lady named Misaki shows up one day out of the blue with intentions of getting old depressed Sato back into society.
The lead character pair ends up becoming a trio once the loud-music bumping neighbor of Sato's (and an old high-school pal, it turns out) joins the fray. In all this unlikely team makes it their mission to rehabilitate the ever-degenerating mental and social health of Sato through a sort of long and drawn out intervention.
Believe it or not, this is a comedy anime title despite what you may have figured after reading the summary. It's based on a novel, which although I haven't had the pleasure of reading personally, can't possibly capture the oddity and personality that the anime just relishes in around every corner.
The core of the show alternates between a cityscape reality and the hallucinations of Sato, which sometimes border on sexual fantasies. I should note that there is no real nudity involved in said scenarios, but rather provocative outfits and a bit of suggestive dialog. It is the language that earns this show a majority of its MA rating here in the US.
A lot of the show's charm stems from the age-old gag of presenting a fairly "out there" conspiracy theory that can never fully be dismissed by the viewer. The show's creative team does a great job painting a lead character who is clearly suffering from social dysfunction although there are moments along the way where you can't help but wonder if indeed some other forces (like a top-secret agency for example) aren't at play.
The biggest problem I had with the show is that it lacks consistency in nearly sense of the term. There are some genuinely funny moments but they are few and far between. There are some intriguing psychological undertones that slip away to cheap attempts at humor. There are some nice textures and visuals on occasion but more often than not you'll be looking at art that simply gets the job done. About the only aspect of this program that holds steady is the soundtrack, which includes some smooth melodies and catchy J-Pop numbers throughout.
The acting work is solid in both language options, with the Japanese dialog squeaking into the top-spot thanks to a female actor ensemble that feel almost custom tailored to the material.
In all, this is definitely not a show for everyone, nor is the silly/ goofy type of light-hearted romp that previews suggest. It's really a tragic tale if you allow yourself to look beyond the bright visuals and giddy personalities that make up the superficial. Pacing is nice and swift even if the show does struggle at times to firmly establish itself into a genre.』 『Studio: Funimation Prod Inc Release Date: 08/25/2009 Run time: 600 minutes』

I purchased the first season a while back when Geneon still sold their products in America and the first run had DTS surround for the English track! Funimation then repackage this and removes that?!
One star for this abortion of such a great show, you will never know how truly awesome this show is if all you do is watch this version.』
(The Complete Funimation Release At Last) 『For many fans of the franchise, it is incredible news that Funimation has decided to assemble the full previously Geneon-exclusive property and release it as a complete series box set.
Black Lagoon is one of those rare anime titles that manage to combine a near endless succession of violence and gunplay with a gritty back-story that provides far more than just a catalyst to advance the action-sequences along. Thanks to collaboration between Geneon Entertainment and Funimation, the Black Lagoon series is one of several titles in which while Geneon retains the license, Funimation holds the rights to the manufacturing, marketing, sales and distribution in North America.
In terms of the Black Lagoon mythos, The Complete Box Set represents the full two-season run of the anime, which was itself based on a manga written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe.
Released across eight discs (thin packs) and packaged within a cardboard outer slipcase, The Complete Box Set consists of episodes 1-24. Bonus discs are loaded with a host of interesting material including the show's Promo Video, "Red Faction" music video (performed by MELL), a behind the scenes documentary on the English production, an interview with director Sunao Katabuchi, textless opening and closings, and Funimation trailers. The show comes in at a total runtime of 660 minutes and wears a very appropriate TV MA (mature, 17+) rating.
Language options are standard sub&dub with both an English dub and original Japanese soundtrack (either of which is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0)&the choice of English subtitled if so inclined to turn them on.
The show, for those who have yet to experience it, has a distinctly Asian-movie quality about it. While graphic violence segments are often retained from the manga source material, the core of the show's uniqueness comes in the form of spectacular feats of physical display during the intense and frequently occurring battles. Think slow-motion back handsprings to avoid a stream of dangerously spinning blades ala John Woo.
Fantastic visuals aside, the story shows several moments of gang-driven brilliance throughout. Rather than focus on a single character's trials and tribulations, the Black Lagoon saga is known for its penchant for popping around on several seemingly disconnected story arcs, which are ultimately tied together pretty nicely. The first season introduced viewers to the Lagoon Company, which was essentially a band of mercenaries who smuggled goods in and around the waterfronts of Southeast Asia in the 1990s. As expected with a group of pirates, the team were often placed into a wide variety of scenarios which included violent firefights, hand-to-hand combat (with gleaming blades a plenty), and nautical battles that would, of late, fit right in on the headlines of the news. When not involved in death-defying blood baths, the members of Lagoon Company could often be found scheming on the stools of The Yellow Flag, a shady bar in Roanapur.
I bring up events of the past because the first season made it quite clear that while Lagoon Company does business with a wide variety of clients from many nations, they are particularly friendly relationship with a Russian crime syndicate by the name of Hotel Moscow. The Second Barrage sets up the story of a string of disturbing murders taking place where twin killers appear to be targeting members of Hotel Moscow.
Without giving too much away, the plot this time around follows three story threads that delicately dance around one another but all progress toward the greater goal of getting to the bottom of the string of murders in question.
Often criticized for its violent content and heavy existentialistic-themes, the truth about Black Lagoon is that true enjoyment is often the result of zoning out and simply enjoying the nearly endless and incredibly cool action segments (one guy can slice a fired bullet in two with a swipe of his katana- it doesn't get cooler than that).
English dub work is solid although the emotion and intensity level is superior in the original Japanese soundtrack. The only problem with viewing the subtitled version is that reading the text can often distract from the lightening-fast action taking place at any given moment.
In all, Black Lagoon The Complete Box Set is a welcomed release of a well-regarded franchise with enough new twists and turns to keep viewers (both experienced and new to the show alike) glued to the set. It's not for everyone, however, as the show is littered with adult-themes, violence, and gore.
Fans of action-driven story telling, scantily clad women with big guns, and action sequences that are often superior to big-budget Hollywood feature films, reserve a space on your shelf for Black Lagoon. An extra star for Funimation's decision to slap it all together into an 8-disc volume (6 discs plus 2 worth of bonus material) all for a little more than the individual seasons have been selling for.』 『Rokuro Okajima is meek, mundane and metropolitan. I knew this going into the 49-episode DVD collection, which is spaced out across two 6-disc sets from Bandai under the budget-friendly Anime Legends collections.
So consistent was the negative feedback of the series that I purposely began my Gundam viewing obsession with the original, followed by Zeta, Wing, Seed, 0080, and 0083 all before tearing into G. With apprehension and low expectations, I began the 49-episode journey of Domon Kasshu and company and am pleased to report that I was pleasantly surprised. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the highs and lows of the show itself, let us take a moment to discuss G Gundam's roots and developments.
As many know, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is one of the longest-standing and most successful licenses to come out of Japan, a nation known for an obsession with all-things Giant Robot. That said, back in 1994 the Gundam franchise was already celebrating its fifteenth year of existence and commemorated the occasion with three individual and unrelated programs (G was the first of the three, followed by Wing then the 08th MS Team).
Airing in Japan in 1994 (and running through 1995), G Gundam maintains the dark, gritty feel of shows from the era like Gundam Wing. However, unlike Wing, G Gundam takes place in the Future Century (FC) where the earth-nations-inspired space colonies battle it out to earn control over the planet for a four-year term. Democracy be darned, this responsibility is determined through a Roman Gladiator style tournament whereby each colony sends a Gundam (&pilot) to duke it out on the planet's surface, often at the expense of the population/ landmarks.
On paper the plot sounds pretty weak and certainly contributed to my low expectations going into the program. However, and like the rest of the Gundam franchise in general, the show's writers wisely pace the larger plot context against the more-immediate and relatable struggles of a lead character, his love interest, and a mysterious photograph. In truth, the "mortal combat" theme of each episode serves only as a story progression tool while the cast is methodically introduced.
Where the show succeeds is through its immature yet lovable cast of characters. National pride (and clichés) abounds and constantly reminded this author of the simple reality that nobody but the Japanese could have so flawlessly pulled it off. Die-hard fans of the Gundam mythos will likely cringe at Mobile Suits (or Mobile Fighters as the case may be) decked out to resemble a boxer or a windmill maketheir appearance. However I should point out that for every laughable gimmick displayed, there are at least a pair of wicked-cool Mobile Fighter designs including Neo-Germany's Shadow Gundam, Neo-China's Dragon Gundam and even lead character Domon Kasshu's Shining and Burning Gundams.
Of course the individual fighters pale in comparison to the larger conflict presented here in Domon's mission of vengeance against his corrupted brother, former master, and the dreaded and oftentimes disturbing Dark Gundam. Taking a chapter from The Empire Strike's Back, a large portion of the lead character's development comes in the form of training. Only unlike mastering The Force, Domon's own struggles involve mastery of an ever-evolving form of martial arts called Tohofuhai. Espeically noteworthy in this sequence is a dull and rusted sword that cannot slice through butter when operated by an unfocused mind. This representation of the acquisition of discipline works very well here and sets Domon up perfectly for an epic battle between multiple enemies.
Pacing of the story is quite fluid as well despite a bit of inconsistency in the lead characters' abilities. Early episodes show a Domon able to catch a barrage of gunfire with his bare fingers only to be intimidated by a lone pistol later on and his mechanic/ personal physician/ love interest Rain Mikamura starts out with a plethora of gadgets (like force-field-generator earrings) that seem to disappear as the show progresses as well.
I should mention that while the plot advances with steady authority, the maturation of lead character, Domon Kasshu is a bit more inconsistent. He is introduced as shadowy, almost supernatural character displaying amazing feats of strength and ability only to regress to a bit of a wild card about midway through the prose. His impatience and lack of discipline come to a fever pitch just before the showdown between he and his former master but his personality continues to fluctuate even throughout the Gundam Fight Finals in Hong Kong.
More consistent is the character of Rain who manages to become Domon's counterpoint in many situations with level headedness and patience.
In conclusion perhaps G Gundam's greatest strength is intertwined with its greatest flaw: It is a part of the Gundam Universe. Because of this, viewers are treated to a take on the franchise literally like no other before it or since. Classic and contemporary Gundam designs make cameos left and right (especially during the later stages of the tournament) including the likes of the original Mobile Suits, Zeta Gundam, F91, Victory Gundam and so on. Sharp eyed viewers will delight in spotting the subtle homage to the other series' hidden throughout.
Conversely, being affiliated with the Gundam Universe is a dangerous proposition for any show not because of continuity restraints but rather because the bar has simply been raised so far that anything that strays from the formula seems to be rejected. Viewers coming in to G Gundam expecting the political and scientific accuracy that the franchise is known for will surely be disappointed. To put it simply, G Gundam sacrifices nearly all aspects of political conflict or scientific intricacy to deliver its more action-oriented prose. Sure it's a step in the wrong direction for those who view the franchise as a mecha-oriented Star Trek but on the other hand it's no more unrealistic than beloved American robot shows like Voltron or Transformers (explaining its success during its 2002 debut on Cartoon Network).』
(This is a personal favorite) 『I've been an anime fan since I was 8, and I can thank this series for that. When I got this dvd I was impressed, the G-files interviews were informative and the discs include both dub and sub. The only downside is there's two collections to get and not just one.』
(G Gundam) 『Overall this was a very good series. It had great super robot qualities, great mechs, good characters, and even apperances from gundams in different series (if you look hard enough). the only problem with it is they could have had more extras on the dvd's.』 『It is time for the Gundam Fight tournament! Each country sends a Gundam to Earth for this prestigious tournament in the hopes of winning power and glory for their homeland! But this time, there's an unseen evil lurking behind the scene. Domon Kasshu, Neo Japan's reluctant Fighter, is determined to uncover this evil and clear his family name! The fight to the top begins now! Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Mecha.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not what was meant to be...) 『Jumping from the second season's brilliant Kyoto arc to the filler episodes of season 3 will likely seem a bit jarring to most viewers: near the end of the Kyoto arc you see Kenshin standing over the grave of someone from his past that he claims to have slain with his own sword, effectively setting up what was supposed to happen next; however, the third season completely ignores this and moves on to an increasingly inane group of stories.
The reason for this is that the next story arc in the manga was still being written at that point, so these filler episodes were created during the waiting process and became an entire season. Unfortunately, the Jinchuu (or Revenge) arc that was supposed to be season 3 never came to fruition as the episodes in this box set received such poor ratings that the show was pulled. This is especially sad considering numerous online testimonials point to the Jinchuu arc being the best of them all-- no small feat considering its predecessor.
...BUT...
This review is not supposed to be a lament of what could have been. As it stands, this is what we got with regards to the regular anime ending for Kenshin-- disregarding the OVAs that attempt to summarize the Jinchuu arc-- and this is what must be reviewed.
Considered completely out of context of the show, this set might be considered alright. In fact, I found some enjoyment out of quite a few of the episodes. For instance, despite being a bit plodding, the Christian rebellion storyline (the first of four major ones) is pretty enjoyable at the better moments. The two that follow aren't bad, but they aren't great either. To be honest, the only storyline in the group that I found to be utterly garbage was the last one, which involves Feng Shui-- also known as the Geomancer storyline. This group of episodes is so out of character for the entire series that it can hardly be watched without feeling a bit of disgust.
While I found a little enjoyment in it, should you come into this season expecting another Kyoto-like execution, you'll be severely disappointed. This stuff was never written by the original author of the manga and feels very much out of place at times, especially during the last two storylines. Furthermore, the ending leaves very much to be desired: it feels like a big letdown after the buildup over the entire series, which is all I'll say regarding it in this review.
So, basically, it comes down to this: if you are a completionist, go ahead and get this one (as you will anyway :p), but keep in mind that it nowhere near lives up to the rest of the series. Beyond that, if you are able to suspend your disbelief pretty well, you can possibly find some enjoyment from this season as I did. Otherwise, it's probably best to stay away and consider the anime complete at the end of the Kyoto arc.
If you want the complete story as it was supposed to happen, then read the manga-- I believe books 19-28. In lieu of that, you can watch the three Samurai X OVAs: Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection. The first two summarize the portion of the manga that deals with Kenshin's Battosai days, while the latter includes some of the Jinchuu arc as part of an overall flashback on the series from Kaoru's view. Note, however, that the OVAs are brief in their treatment of the final storyline, and they also trade the goofball tone of the series for a very serious and almost depressing atmosphere.』
(great condition and fast shipping.) 『I could not this item anywhere else they where all on back order. Amazon was cheap and great timing on shipmint.』
(Box in bad shape) 『The DVDs are fine so I can see. The box in which the DVDs came in was smashed and broken but DVDs seem to play OK.』
(good series bad box) 『the series is good but the box is bad the first and last disks will be scratched severly so I suggest that you make a backup of these two disks immediatly after the purchase』
(For younger people but still good.) 『If you like it when people kick people's a**es without killing them this is for you. There is still killing but not done by Kenshin. Kids can watch this but adults will enjoy it too.』 『After the epic of Kyoto, Kenshin and his group settle back into their usual cycle of adventures. Old friends like Yutaro and Misao make appearances, as do villians like Shogo Amakusa, a rogue warrior who fights with the same sword style as Kenshin.』

Not yet released Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The epic ending to one of the great animes) 『Some people seem to think that Vol. 4 ends up splitting off into a completely different series that the first 3/4. I happen to think it is just the evolution of a truly great series in fact, it was this entire arc that got me into Hunter x Hunter at a time when I recall seeing the animation and, being spoiled by the latest technologies, overlooked this truly incredible story AND (now that I've come to appreciate it) animation. I will be getting this the second it is released. Personally, I think they need to give the Spiders their own series!』
(Enter the spiders) 『"Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is the last volume of the shortish anime series, and it's also drastically different from the entire storyline that precedes it. Not only is it far darker and bloodier, but Kurapika and his quest for revenge become the center of attention rather than the goofy and less developed Gon -- and it's a brilliant piece of work, if a rather unsatisfying end.
On a trip back to Whale Island, Gon and Killua learn of a box that Gon's father left for him -- and among the contents is a video game memory card with the dangerous, infamously rare "Greed Island" on it. The boys immediately start trying to raise money on internet auctions and casinos, as they make their way to Yorknew City. Oh, and Leorio rejoins them for the time being.
Meanwhile, Kurapika has taken on a job as one of several Hunter bodyguards for a psychic Mafia girl, who is planning to attend the auction in Yorknew City. The Phantom Troupe is also interested in the Mafia's booty (not sure why), and the girl that Kurapika and his new compatriots are guarding. With Hisoka's help, Kurapika plans to find and kill the Spiders with his new power -- a series of deadly nen chains.
But when the auction items vanish from the vault, Kurapika ends up facing the first of the Phantom Troupe -- but they are soon as bent on vengeance as he. Worse, his young friends have become enmeshed in the Troupe's web.
Leech infestations, impalements, flesh-shredding punches, shattered bones, a man slowly eaten alive, and Kurapika's heart-squishing chain -- "Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is a pretty gruesome affair. This is especially true because the entire arc really revolves around Kurapika's quest for revenge -- sure, there's some fluffy subplots about Gon and Killua selling stuff on the Web, but they pale by comparison.
And the writers wrap the entire storyline in a murky cloak, which seems to be half mob thriller and half dark coming-of-age. They also weave in some truly astonishing fight scenes (a multi-person fight against nen ninjas) and bleakly intricate thriller storylines (Gon and Killua's capture by the Spiders); viewers also get some glimpses of the heretofore unknown Phantom Troupe, who are terrifying in their sheer power.
Even the animators seemed to polish their work further, with some hauntingly shadowed, purple-toned images that are both beautiful and horrible -- the bloody ballet between Kurapika and his enemy, or the sociopathic Chrollo "conducting" terrorist attacks. The one problem would probably be that though the anime series ended here, it leaves several plot threads hanging loose. The story was picked up in some OVA episodes, but for the moment this is it.
These episodes also flesh out Kurapika into the best-rounded character of the series, as well as a truly tragic figure. He's a gentle, peaceful young man who has intentionally made himself into the ultimate nen fighter, despite his hatred of death and blood. His devastation after he kills for the first time is heartbreaking. And we see more of the iron-clad determination and resourcefulness of Gon and Killua, even in the worst circumstances.
There are also a new round of well-rounded, intricate supporting characters. Kurapika's ugly-but-kind friend Melody is a particular standout, and the Phantom Troupe turns out to have their own internal loyalties and personal ties. Their leader's doe eyes are rather freaky, though.
"Hunter X Hunter Volume 4" is a brilliant ending to a previously solid and slow-moving series, with a tragic edge and plenty of action. A dark affair, but a great one.』
(hunter series is a great show) 『all the seasons of hunter should be released onto dvd,I know you can get them from tv addicts but they are not the original studio dvds but if people want them they will go to any lengths to get them』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Incredible!) 『I wasn't sure what to expect, but decided to purchase this series on a whim since it was well regarded on [...]. I was looking for another seinin or josei anime to sink my teeth into and this fit the bill more than I ever would have expected.
Each episode pretty much stands alone, however I would still suggest watching in chronological order as the character is revealed and develops from episode to episode. He's a great protagonist - mysterious and enigmatic but you come to love him and laugh with him. The storytelling in each episode was captivating and made me feel like a child again exposed to a whole new world of unusual beings. In the same way I grew up wondering about fairies, dragons and unicorns from the stories I read, Mushishi made me wonder about the details of the mystical creatures they dreamed up called mushi.
The box set is nice - very simple, slim and complete. The cover is nice but not at all obviously "anime" so if you're not one who displays your anime habit for the world to see, you can comfortably include this on your shelves ;). There is the original Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub. The special features are also worthwhile as they have an interview with the Japanese director which is pretty interesting as well.
I can't adequately describe how this series affected me. The music in each episode was great. The art and animation was different if not unusual, but so perfect for the story. A series I could easily re-watch over and over again. I think this series will probably impress most people - particularly if you are an adult who still finds themselves fascinated with classic dark fairy tales and cultural mythology. I think younger audiences could also watch if they're already comfortable and familiar with darker stories (like a classic Grimm's fairy tale or a Greek myth) but I believe much of it would go over their heads. In any case, this series is very highly recommended.』
(Meditative anime) 『If you like watching the countryside of Medieval Japan rendered in marvelous colours, this is the anime for you. The director is right in the interview: the maximum effort they put into the backdrop and scenery was absolutely worth it. If only, some more effort were shown in the variety of character design too. Unfortunately, all the female, and most of the male, characters have the same countenance. It did not pose a problem for the first two disks, but by the time I got to the third, there was a "not again" feeling when the faces of a new episode appeared on the scene. Fortunately, the personalities showed much more variety.
However, not even the scarcity of "players" stopped me watching. Why? Because the timing and pacing of each of these stories are like eastern meditation. The background music is without too much variation and of repetitive nature, but you do not mind it at all. The opening song was a little more bothersome by the end of the series. But it's a product of the (commercial) west, so it is understandable. (I never watched more than half a disk a day. Generally tried to keep it as low as two episodes a day.) Most of the stories do not show too much variation either. Most have some predictable turns of events. The only thing you cannot always predict if they will have a happy ending or not. Or if such a thing as a happy ending exists at all. Not all of the problems are or can be solved. Not everyone is fully cured. Not all deaths can be avoided. It's not always the skill of the Mushi-shi that saves the day.
Recommendation: try to see one or two episodes online. It's really not a problem if they are not episode one and two. The stories are self-contained and the quality of the series is quite even. If it seems to be your style, buy the whole box. It's worth its price. Of course, if you are of the patient type, try to wait for a better bargain. And do not forget that the movie version Mushi-Shi: The Movie also received favourable reviews.』
(Mushi Shi) 『There isn't much else I can say to back up this anime besides what the others have said. All I can tell you is that this is one collection that is worth picking up. Each episode is virtually stand alone, so there are no major arcs. It is an anime that is meant to be used as a way to take a break from shonen or action animes. It is well worth the money and can be watched in any order. Mushi-Shi is almost like a hidden gem.』
(Most Beautiful Anime Ever Made) 『This anime has become my favorite anime of all time, and I've seen a lot of animes. The story is episodic, which I normally dislike however it works to the advantage of this series because with every episode the characters that are introduced are well-thought and deep with a powerful past. Every episode is like watching a highly condensed Miyazaki film. You'll finish every episode in awe.』
(Video quality disappointing compared to original discs) 『There are seven, rather than four, episodes per disc, and the extra video compression shows. The picture of the box set cannot compare to the original, individual releases. This is a shame, considering the care and artistry that was lavished on the series.』 『The Cure Lies in the Curse.
Between this world and the next, there is a point where it becomes impossible to distinguish between plant and animal, between life and death. It is a place man was never meant to tread...This is where you will find the mushi. Neither good nor evil, they are life in its purest form. An unseen river reshaping the path of man, through their very presence we are changed. Vulgar and strange, they have inspired fear in humans since the dawn of time and have, over the ages, come to be known as "mushi".
