I was looking for something electric and with auto shutoff. this was the most handsome and would definitely fit in with the rest of my stainless appliances. I couldn't be happier. to put this baby on and go back upstairs to my office and not have to worry about getting so involved with work that I miss hearing a whistle -- is a godsend. It heats surprisingly fast and water stays nice and warm in the glass. If I could change anything, it would be the "on" indicator light, its pretty dim and I can never tell that its lit when I turn it on. as far as smells, what I think I smelled was rubber or plastic, like the smell you'd get if hard plastic was sitting in a plastic wrapper for a while - which I'm sure these units are in the Amazon warehouse. I added 1/2 capful bleach to my new dishwater and used that for the initial cleaning --being sure to wipe down the base - which in my opinion had the "smell". I ran one extra disposable load beyond the recommended one and by the 3rd run, no smells remained. The small footprint was another plus- as my counter space is already pretty minimal.』

The kettle turns off automatically, so I don't need to watch it boil. When boiling 4 cups of water it takes less than 2 min; I can go and do whatever I need, and even 20 min later it's still hot. Plus, the boiling time changes with the level of the water. The base never gets hot when water is boiling, and I can pick up the kettle and put it down somewhere else.
What's also great is that if you use tap water, you can see when you need to clean out the kettle. Just boil vinegar in the pot and leave it for a little while, and it comes out clean. I used to use tap water, so I would clean it out with vinegar; now I use filtered water and never need to clean it.

Love the idea of a Carafe rather than a burner to keep my coffee hot and that it has a white option to match my kitchen. Also love the 1-4 cup option which does help it turn out hotter. However, it's been about a year since I bought it, using it several times a week, and it drives me crazy.
Coffee tastes pretty good, but I eventually purchased paper filters since the permanent one wasn't worth the trouble to get clean. (Not a huge problem, just thought you might want to know.) For more than 4 cups, it's hot enough, but not quite as hot as I'd prefer since I use half and half. There is a lot of condensation after you brew your coffee, so I feel I have to leave the top of the machine open all day for it to dry out enough -- and there is no partial open option as on my previous Cuisinart Filter Brew. (Which, btw, I only stopped using because it was the wrong color for my kitchen.) And, my biggest complaint, is that the top of the carafe is very poorly designed. The coffee pours out in a trickle, even with the top all the way on as instructed. Whenever I have guests, they think the coffee is gone, but, really, there is plenty .... it just doesn't pour well. Also, for that reason, I never use the carafe to pour the water in before brewing... Takes too long, so I use a measuring cup for a larger batch or my travel mug when that's all I want.
Consumer Reports just came out with new Coffeemaker Ratings, and I am eagerly researching those to pick out a new coffee maker to purchase. Number one on their list is Cuisinart Brew Central DCC-1200, but it doesn't have a thermal carafe. The only other Cuisinart listed was rated #12 out of 36, and does have a thermal carafe, but it is more expensive and has THE LOWEST test results on "Carafe handling"! Guess I'm ready to try a new brand. )-:』

(Almost the Best Coffee Maker on Market) 『Like many other reviewers, I too have had a problem with my coffee maker brewing coffee at a lukewarm temperature. Not sure how this is happening since a boiling temperature drives the water up into the hose and out the shower head. I suspect those who have not had a problem with lukewarm coffee probably drink their coffee black, or with a splash of cream. I, on the other hand use more milk than most, so I require a hot cup of coffee to start with. So after re-reading reviews on this coffee maker and reviewing what is available on the market, I decided to keep this device and see if I could come up with a way to make my coffee hot.
The first most obvious thing that I decided NOT to do was to use my filtered refrigerator water. Placing the extra demand on the coffeemaker to heat cold water could not be an option for obvious reasons. The second thing I determined I would try was selecting the "1 - 4" cup button to see if this made a difference. I noticed another reviewer felt it did. I'm not sure it made any difference at all. However, after some careful consideration on what could be causing this problem, I tried something else, which seemed to make all the difference in the world. I figured the water was not staying in the heating chamber long enough before it got sucked up into the hose (again, not sure why), so I decided to manipulate the on/off button to force the water to heat longer. So I would go through the normal brewing process, then just when the coffee started to spray out of the shower head, I would stop it, then let it sit for a few seconds, then turn it back on allowing it to heat a little more. Then when it started to spray again, I would turn it off. Repeat 3 - 5 times, pausing several seconds in between restarting. By doing this, I figured the water had more time to get heated by the coils. This seemed to do the trick and keep in mind, I have been using cold refrigerator watering my brewing process.
The obvious problem with this method is that it required me to be near the coffeemaker and pay attention to it's cycle to be sure I stopped it just in time. It is a lot of manipulation, but I now actually enjoy a hot and flavorful cup of coffee with milk - and it seems to stay hot for several hours in the carafe. Since I only brew at home on the weekends, it is a doable option for me since I feel it is overall a quality product that brews one delicious pot of coffee.
If water is not heated adequately before showering over the coffee grounds, it will not pull out the full potential flavor from the coffee beans. This is important to know in case you are spending big bucks on expensive coffee, like me. I can't help but think that since so many folks are having this same problem, that there is a coil issue with this coffee maker. The problem is a quality control issue, seemingly with Calphalon. But Calphalon cannot directly help me. I called them, but because these pots are made in China, Amazon has to replace them. Calphalon cannot issue replacements as they do not have access to them here in the United States.
Each of the three stock pots arrive scratched, or with very small holes in the coating from the manufacturing process. It looks like the entire silver aluminum base has been spray painted with the lightest, thinnest possible coating of the dark material that you see, that material which you think is so indestructible.
Well, it is not indestructible. It is incredibly thin. Every pan I've received has scratches showing the silver underneath, dots where when it was "spray painted" or however they apply this coating in the factory, the coating did not stick to the silver in some places.
Who wants a brand new pot that arrives and already has compromises to the anodized coating?
This is a very poorly made stock pot. It looks GORGEOUS except for the issues with the coating. It sits on my stovetop and if you do not see the areas where it is scratched, it looks indestructible. It looks like a sturdy pot and has the most marvelous handles. It has a very pleasing shape. It looks like something you can't wait to cook in. It looks wonderful sitting on my stove top, but I am sending it back to Amazon.
If they can ever get their quality control issues resolved, so that I can receive one where the coating is not compromised, I will gladly try to cook in it.
Until then, I will wait.
EDITED TO ADD: Also, I tried to store this in my cabinet. Just the briefest contact with another pot, and I do mean the briefest; it barely touched it -- scratched the exterior so that the silver aluminum underneath shows through. So if I ever did end up with one and used it for cooking, I would be using kid gloves to do so. These are not hardy, sturdy pots as they initially appear.』

minor observations:
built-in plastic coaster bottom could do without. will cultivate mold/mildew over time. it's not seam-sealed. you can't prevent water from getting under there, even if washed carefully by hand (recommended).
sippervoir(sipping+reservoir) needs to be fairly clean if you want the fliptop to open on command. dried up coffee or liquid binds the nipple and sippervoir together for several seconds - like when you get some syrup or sugar on your hand, it tends to get sticky.
looking under the cap, it will behoove you not to get any liquid trapped under it. top cap can't disassemble for cleaning/drying. it will prevent buildup of mold/mildew. (use a steam cleaner under cap - maybe?) it does a perfect job of containing liquid inside, and leakproof to my observation.』
(Incredible!) 『From 6:40am to now as I am drinking it at 4:10pm (I drink my coffee super slow I know), this mug has kept my coffee HOT! It's spillproof, plus the sipper has a small hole from which the coffee comes out of, and so if you tilt it to drink it, you can blow on your hot coffee first before sipping (the liquid sits in the "well" so to say if you pour it out little by little). I love my sigg thermoses because they keep my coffee just as hot for just as long, but drinking it is a pain because if it's too hot you'll either burn your mouth or spill it all over yourself on the commute (I take a subway and bus) as a result of it's huge mouth/opening. It's an easy press of the button to pop the top of this one open too (compared to having to completely unscrew the top of the Sigg thermos) which makes it super easy to drink anytime. I highly recommend this thermos! In fact i'm going to buy another one soon...』

The chopper is a little more work to clean than a knife, but MUCH faster and still easy to clean with the included cleaning comb. (don't lose it) Cleaning is little more than rinsing usually. I run it through the dishwasher every few days.
If you don't need to prep a lot of ingredients like I listed or you don't really care if your items are minced/ diced/ sliced into identical shapes, then you don't need this. However, if you do a lot of chopping/ mincing/ slicing and you like it when your finished pieces are all identical (I do!), then this chopper can not be beat. It is very durable but requires a fairly strong push. My children can't push through the same items that I can, but if I take out half the items, then they too enjoy seeing the neatly chopped pieces. What's more, the skillet was much easier to clean that time. It looked like it would be a challenge again, but surprisingly, all the little bits and chunks came off with the scrub brush. I think this will become one of our favorite pans, particularly in winter when we can't grill outside.』

(Makes a great steak) 『The first time I used this pan, it was a disaster. It was preseasoned but it smoked...a lot. I had to turn on the attic fan and open the doors! I was groaning a bit....thought I had messed up buying it. I regrouped and re-seasoned it myself after that. Just clean it then coat it with oil and let it sit in a 350 oven for a while. That really helped. After that I did not have the smoking issues. It makes a great steak. It's a heavy skillet that heats very evenly and sears grill marks perfectly. I routinely cook 1 flat iron steak cut into thirds in mine and it holds it all just fine. I use this pan at least once a week. I love it. Clean up is not bad if you just pour some hot water in it while it is still hot. The gunk will rise to the top. I take a finger and slide down each of the groves and it is clean. Gets my hands dirty but they clean up. :) Just never, ever, use soap on cast iron. IF you ever do, you can save it but it is a pain- I've found it best to burn it in a fire to get any rust or anything off, then season it again. 』

Once we had enough fuel in there it worked fine. We also had to play with the type of sugar, amount and flame size. We found that white sugar worked better than brown. (Don't Consider Anything Else But This) 『I was looking at a little cheaper one at first then realized many people had problems and recommended more expensive one. So, I decided to purchase this one and I am so glad that I did. This is durable, very easy to use and flame comes out so strong at the highest position which makes your work a lot faster and easier.
Like someone wrote here, mine came with full fuel. I couldn't see any air inside the window so tried to fill up and didn't go in. So I turned it on and noticed it had full fuel already. So, if you purchase this item, you should try using it before filling it up.
I made 2 creme brulee in 5" diameter dishes and used about 1/3 of the fuel. It hold enough to make 6 or more so you don't have to keep filling up. There is a small knob on the side at the top of this torch which I didn't know until I was done using it (read instructions!!!). It is to hold the frame so you don't have to keep holding the turn on button.
