I have seen a couple reviews on here commenting that this is not effective and does not create an actual vacuum. While it could never create an actual vacuum, I think it is still effective. A wine will not be perfect the next day, but will still be very good. And where even a good wine will rarely last more than two days once opened, I have experienced very drinkable wine after four days. Of course it all depends on where you start. If it's a $5 bottle of wine then don't expect magic.』
(So far, seem to work well) 『Bought this because I saw similar (but not identical) bottle re-stoppers at a Winery, where samples could be tested. Staff could uncork and recork the bottles very quickly for sampling.
So far these have worked well. Stoppers go easily into the bottles. Just have to pull the vacuum handle several times until you here a clicking. Not difficult to pull handle. Also when ready to reuse, just need to press the upper 'stem' on the stopper sideways, vacuum seal is broken and stopper comes out easily. So far working well. People at the winery said you could not use this method for 'sparkling' beverages (champagne) as the vacuum would remove the CO2 (sparkle) - so have not tried with champagne.』
(You can create a vacuum with a hand pump) 『While I don't own this item (I have added it to my Christmas list), I would like to dispel a myth that has appeared in some of the reviews.
As a mechanical engineer who has designed vacuum chambers for over 16 years, I can tell you with great certainty that you can create a vacuum with a hand pump.
Technically, a vacuum is any pressure below atmosphere. If you can remove one molecule of gas with this hand pump you have created a vacuum. If you hear or feel air rush into the bottle when you remove the cork, you have created a vacuum.
The more relevant question is how strong of a vacuum can you create?
Since vacuum is simply a pressure (force/area) less than atmosphere, you can measure the "strength" of the vacuum by comparing the force differential across the pump. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is around 14.7 lb/in^2. If the area of the pump's piston is 1 in^2, you could create a complete vacuum with 14.7 pounds of force. In other words, you could create a complete vacuum with half the force needed to put air in your car's tire. The application of force to this pump is not the limiting factor in creating a vacuum.
The limiting factor will likely be the vapor pressure of the wine.
Due to the kinetics of the molecules in the liquid, there are always some molecules of wine that are ejected from the surface of the liquid. The rate at which these molecules are ejected is a function of temperature. If all the air molecules were removed from the bottle, a vapor would be created in the head space at the vapor pressure of the liquid.
Presuming that the wine was composed exclusively of ethanol and water, its vapor pressure would be around 53 torr or 1/14th of an atmosphere ([...]). The pressure in the wine bottle cannot be reduced below this point as long as liquid remains in the bottle.
A wine bottle opening is typically 18 mm, so a force of 5 pounds would be sufficient to remove all the air from the headspace. It should be noted that air may have diffused into the wine and predicting its extraction is complicated by a time element and potential chemical reactions between the wine and the oxygen. It should also be noted that mixing between the wine vapor and the air in the head space would likely result in some wine vapor being extracted during the pumping process, reducing the amount of air extracted proportionally. This effect would likely produce a first order response that may make it impossible to completely remove all air while wine vapor remains.
I don't how good the seals are on the Vacu Vin, but if it feels like you have to pull with about five pounds of force, you are getting a pretty strong vacuum. Less than 1 pound of force would produce a pretty weak vacuum that would leave more than 80% of the air in the bottle.

A swish with warm water is the only cleanup. I do recommend an electric knife to cut the breads for a cleaner slice. It makes toasty, crispy outsides and soft insides. (Great Little Breadmaker!) 『I bought the Zojirushi BB-HAC10 Home Bakery to replace another unit that was over 12 yrs old. The kids have grown and we could no longer eat the large loaves the old bread maker was baking before they spoiled. (Great Bread - First Try) 『This is the first bread maker I have owned and I have only made one loaf of bread with it. I expected to have to try a few times and tweak this and tweak that to get a nice loaf, but on the first shot following with directions for a basic regular loaf, I got excellent results.
The machine has many plusses
- Simple simple simple to use - Clear easy to follow directions - Hokey, but useful, if you don't like to read, video about how to use the machine - Makes really good bread. - Small footprint, and nice small loaf good for one or two people. - Quiet, I haven't owned a machine, but I have heard one or two others run, this one is quiet.
With only one loaf of bread made, I can't really give you any real negatives. Few things I'll point out.
- on my one batch, the paddle did get stuck in the bowl, no big deal let the pan cool, put a little water in it, and in 5 minutes it came right out. Sounds common among bread machines. - Had a few small really hard spots on the crust, I think that was just some flower and water that didn't get fully incorporated while mixing and then cooked hard to the sides. No big deal, next time I'll pick them off before cutting and eating. - No it is not "programmable" like some other machine, so if you want it to add ingredients for you along the way, or you want to change the timing of functions, don't get this machine.

This change in weight completely changes the feel of the knives - to my mind, not for the better. 』

It has been two months since I received the set from Amazon and I'm impressed with its overall quality. Each knife is still sharp and beautiful. Seven-inch Santoku and 8-inch Chef's knives are my favorites.
My complaints:
1. Two small paring knives are a little too short to handle a variety of small cutting tasks. For example, I tried to cut apples but the knives are too short to cut the fruits in one stroke. I had to use a bigger utility knife from my old Chicago Cutlery knife set.
2. Five-inch utility knife has a serrated edge, which I believe is useful in certain tasks, but not really versatile. As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, you will need a regular utility knife. Six-inch utility knife would be great although it costs $65 if you buy it from an open stock.
3. Each knife comes with an ergonomic handle but it is a little too small for my hand. I wish Henckels knives had bigger handles.
Overall, I'm impressed with the quality and the affordability of this knife set. However, I have a 20-year-old Gerber stamped knife set (12 piece block set) that is as sharp as this Henckels set, but costing merely 1/3 of the price. As such, look elsewhere if you're a budget-conscious chef. Perhaps, Victorinox three-piece stamped knife set that sells for $61 would be an ideal alternative.
I'd recommend this knife set to anyone who is looking for excellent and relatively affordable forged knives from Germany.』

Since buying it separately is outrageously expensive, I've had to pull a poorer-quality knife back out for now since this is a knife I used frequently. I love the santoku, had never used one before, but it's amazing for chopping. The handles are a perfect size for me, a woman with larger hands, and a man would probably appreciate them as well (although the five-star series knives have even more substantial handles). I see other reviews saying they prefer the Twin series, but these are the higher-end knives, forged instead of stamped like the Twin knives. We are so happy it was such an easy and inexpensive fix. It took a little work prying off the old coupling...it doesn't come off easily. My husband explained that what you are really doing is stripping the metal threads when you take off the old one. You will have a few metal shavings to clean up after the old one is removed. But it will come off with a little persistence, so don't give up. Once the old one is off, the new one goes on very easily, just follow the instructions included with the new coupling, and your blender will work once again! We bought two new couplings so we could have one in reserve for the next time we need it. Thank you Amazon!』

About 5 minutes of swearing and frustration, I ended up using a pair of needle nosed pliers and ripping off all the remaining plastic on the coupler. (Used Impact Wrench to remove coupling) 『I purchased 6 of these coupling; one to install and 5 to have on hand for the next time. The wife likes to chop ice with the blender. My first attempt to remove the old coupling was to use a wrench on the flats on the shaft. I ground down a Craftsman wrench to make it thin enough to fit within the flats. Unfortunately, I lost the case hardening on the wrench by grinding it, and it sprung (jaws opened) before the coupling was loose.
My second attempt was successful. I used an impact wrench (the air tool the auto mechanic uses to remove the wheel nuts when changing a tire). I had one in my garage, but other people might consider visiting their local auto repair shop to do this. The object is to select a socket for the tool that somewhat fits over the remaining teeth on the coupling. I use a 1 1/8 12 pt socket but others will work. Squeeze the trigger very briefly. I do not recommend leaving the impact wrench driving the motor for a long period of time because the possibility exits of over-reving the motor and causing damage to the blender. After doing this once, the remaining teeth broke off, and the coupling was not loose. I then placed the blender base on the floor; I then placed the socket on the top of the coupling and pressed down firmly applying another short burst. The coupling loosened.
Note, this coupling has a left hand thread. To remove, the wrench must be set like you are putting ON a wheel nut. The opposite direction from the normal removing of a nut. 』

On it OXO states: "Satisfaction Guarantee: If for any reason your are not satisfied with this product, return it for repair, replacement, or refund." To me this means if it has anything wrong with it or you don't like it for any reason, you can return it for a repair, replacement, or refund tomorrow or 3 years from now. There is no time limit in the statement; there is no asterisk with fine print following. So, unless OXO is lying, it is guaranteed virtually forever.
Next my own experience. I received mine from Amazon a week ago (no cracks in the plastic, the blades are sharp) and have been using it since then, just preparing a single apple at a time for my own pleasure. I really like how quickly and easily I can get an apple ready to eat! I wish I had gotten one of these years ago so I would have eaten more apples and fewer less healthful snacks. (Personal note: my teeth aren't very good for biting so if an apple isn't sliced I'm much less likely to want to eat it.)
I don't have a cutting board so I have been cutting right on my small ceramic serving plate. I have found it cuts smoothly and easily if I rock it a little as I push it down to keep in control and not smash the plate. (In this case it is probably a good thing the frame is plastic and not metal.)
I am grateful to the reviewer who suggested to slice off the bottom 1/16" of the apple before using the corer so that the skin doesn't hold it all together and make it hard to separate the slices. That little effort makes a huge difference; the slices will just fall right out (by themselves or with a gentle poke) when you finish the downstroke. All you have to do is wiggle the core loose and rinse off the corer and you are ready to eat.
This is the first of these that I've ever used so I can't compare with others, although I did shop around on Amazon and saw that OXO makes an all metal version for a couple of dollars more for those who don't think plastic will last. Also I saw another manufacturer who claimed their product was "large" so that might be a better choice for those who need to slice larger apples (although this one seems to have plenty of room left over with the apples I've sliced so far).
It's an unqualified winner for me, so it gets my full five stars.』
(SHORT term) 『I have owned this apple slicer and corer for about four years. It's currently cracking on a few sided and I will have to buy another one. This worked for the short time but long term I would get an all metal apples slicer and corer. My I make apple slices for my husband in his lunch and give them to my son at snack time. (Pure Junk) 『I intended to replace an antique apple corer that I got when my Grandmother died. It was getting dull and because it was flat across the top it was a nuisance to use when making more than one pie. I saw this Oxo unit with the nice offset and I bought it. What a piece of junk. (Rectangular is efficient and Glass lasts) 『I have purchased Pyrex storage pieces for many years now. You can use them in the freezer, refrig, microwave and oven (w/o the tops in the microwave and oven) without problems. The glass is sturdy, and doesn't break easily.
I own about 6-12 each of different sizes and shapes. The rectangular ones are the most efficient to store in the refrigerator (you can get more cups of whatever in the same refrig space), and they stack well without bending the lids.
The glass lasts forever (except when you drop a piece on hard tile - that is the one downside).
I made the mistake of washing the lids from my 1st purchases in my dishwasher and that resulted in warping and edge cracking over the years (I still use them though). I hand wash the lids now and have not had this problem with the later ones.
I use the medium size (6-cup) and large size (11-cup) the most, but buying the 6-piece set (3 bowls/3 lids with a smaller size (3-cup)) is more cost effective.
I don't use plastic storage containers unless I am giving them away with food.
The Pyrex cost more, but they don't discolor and will save you money over the years (if you don't drop them a lot).』

The weak point on our unit was the switch. The little safety button stopped doing its job about a year ago and the whole tirgger part of the switch eventually fell out of the unit, along with some little plastic pieces that appear to have made up some kind of catch that held the trigger in place. Since it looks like the pieces are broken broken off of the plastic housing, it doen's look like it's fixable.
In terms of how it worked, this design deserves 5 stars. In terms of its durability . . . well let's just say that it isn't in the same league as my mother-in-law's Montgomery Ward branded knife that is older than my wife (40+ just don't tell her I said that) and works like it's brand new.』
