It is told from three points-of-view, starting with Aibileen, who speaks in the dialogue of an undereducated black housekeeper. It's a little off-putting at first to read Aibileens's chapters, but worth getting used to because she is a great narrator. Another narrator is Minny, the outspoken, younger best friend of Aibileen and a housekeeper who has a hard time staying employed due to her outspokenness, but who needs to work to support her large family. Skeeter is a white college graduate, unmarried and unable to find love or happiness or even a place to fit in. The three let us glimpse into their worlds as they work together to write a book about the world of black maids and their white bosses, a venture filled with danger for all of them. Stockett does a great job of creating plausible characters for this story. There are pretty clear lines drawn around the oppressed and the oppressors, but very few of the characters are one-dimensional. Most are quite developed and believable. She fills the plot with enough drama and suspense to keep it interesting and moving along. This is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. Immediately empathized with Patrick, torn between helping catch a killer or spend time bonding with a teenager. He chose the path of least resistence. After their experience together, Tessa will happily want to spend time with her boring grandparents. I liked all of the group, except Margaret-don't trust her. I guess I'll have to continue with the trilogy to see if I'm right about her.』 (fun, but definitely gory parts) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Not for the faint of heart. Generally a well-crafted, entertaining read. I'm pretty demanding when it comes to this genre, and I'll buy his other books. I read this one as a freebie kindle, and rarely have I had any desire whatsoever to read any other books buy the featured free authors. Christian book or Christian author? Huh? I have no idea how this book got characterized that way, but I'm happy to say that in no way, shape or form did I see it in that light. So, if you're scared off by the "Christian" label, don't be.』 (The Best Free Read Ever!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Having downloaded this from Amazon as a digital read for my iPhone for free, I didn't expect to be hooked and almost unable to "put down the phone". The characters were interesting and believable, intelligent to a fault. Looks like I will be paying for the next two books in this trilogy. I just hope that Pat's personal relationships are further developed. I loved that the author explored philosophical/religious topics without preaching. Having read books like The Silence of the Lambs, I was not unprepared for the gore and cruelty that another reviewer so objected to. I'm a bit picky although I read a lot and I'm a published author. Nevertheless, this story has all the elements - serial killers, forensics, engaging characters, fast moving and intricately constructed story, a goth teenager and cats. The writing is so engaging as to be itself invisible, and that, to me, is the sign of great writing. Highly recommended.』 (Great Read (And not that gory as some suggest)) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Well done for a first time thriller by the author. I found some of the character traits a bit overdone. For example, the palate for coffee that the protagonist has. Just a bit over-the-top for me. Otherwise and interesting ride that predictably picks up the pace towards the end, albeit with a few unpredictable twists and turns. Looking forward to The Rook.』 『Special Agent Patrick Bowers had only met one man who made him truly afraid. Until now. When he's called to North Carolina to consult on the case of an area serial killer, he finds himself in a deadly game. Cunning and lethal, the killer is always one step ahead of the law, and he's about to strike again. It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop this man who calls himself the Illusionist. And just when the pieces start to come together, Bowers realizes they're not quite adding up. Can he unravel the pattern and save the next victim? Or will the Illusionist win the game by taking one of his opponent's pieces? >price: Schuster Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (King Is On Fire Again!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『UNDER THE DOME is an incredibly long journey (1,000 + pages!) hinged together by some very simple concepts, but it works like a charm. I'm happy to report that Stephen King is back, and better than ever- the man's writing is on fire again, especially after a few novels that, while good, just didn't seem to measure up to his well-known and loved capabalities (including LISEY'S STORY, CELL, and DUMA KEY). Don't get me wrong- those are good books, just not MASTERPIECES- like UNDER THE DOME. DOME feels like it could've come from King's late '70's or '80's heyday and really reminded me, in many ways, of classics like IT, THE MIST, THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, and THE STAND. Not that it 'copies' any of these per se, but the sheer abandoned enthusiasm that you feel resonating off the pages is just so evident with DOME- you feel it from the opening chapter and it makes the book extremely addicting once you start it. You just won't want to stop reading- so be sure to have plenty of time available when you start this classic, epic tome. The story is simple- a small Maine town is encompassed by an invisible force field, cutting it compeltely off from the rest of the world. No way in, no way out. The Army, the Government...the world...must just watch helplessly, like the town residents are goldfish in a bowl. All rescue attempts fail, including a full-fledged missle attack on the mysterious force field that has encompassed its five mile radius. Even though there are wicked, supernatural forces at work when the 'why this has happened' is revealed, this is truly a back story when compared to the evil that some of King's characters do. In particular, there's town selectman, used car salesman, religous zealot, and meth drug dealer Big Jim- who pretty much tries to become the dictator of the isolated city, no matter who gets in his way. His actions---and the townsfolks' misinformed reactions--are pretty much what propels the novel into NEEDFUL THINGS territory, not to mention a soaking bloodbath. Things then curve kinda sorta into STAND territory where you have good guys and bad guys separating and declaring war on each other, with an offshoot group in the middle that seem to have their own psychotic agenda, also rooted in the kind of misinformed Christianity that seems to permeate politics and people so much these days. The twist on the implied 'stand-off' is that although the war does come, it doesn't necessarily come in the way you think it will, which is actually part of the genius of this novel. Everything seems to be set up for a Randall Flagg-ish battle but...someTHING happens and changes the course of events and there's a point where you absolutely don't know what direction things are going to go in or if ANY of the characters will survive this catastrophe, which makes this thing all the more a riveting page turner. Things may not go exactly the way you wanted- or hoped for- but that's life- real and imagined- right? King's classic descriptions, vivid characterizations, and candid (21st Century)observations are intact here- and seemingly more relevant and urgent than ever. With Big Jim, what we get is a sobering allegory of what politics in America has become today, and because it rings so true, it makes it that much more scary, shocking...and sad, of course. Even the well-rounded good guys in this novel have skeletons in the closet, many of them caused by the corruption of our nation. King nails it all between the lines, essaying the boilerplate madness into an amazing paradox of where we really are now. It's these deeper things that the novel is steeped in that make it shine so brilliantly and really, make it so very scary. What it boils down to is that the evil and corruption inside man himself sometimes knows no boundaries and when push comes to shove, killing becomes as easy as breathin' (to crib a line from RAMBO there). Sharp, intelligent, gory, poignant, brilliant, thrilling, sad, and breathtaking---UNDER THE DOME is all of these and more. Check it out and see for yourself- King is back and he's taking no prisoners this time around! 』 (AWESOME) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I pre-ordered this book and received it on Tuesday. I just finished it 6 days later (pretty long for me but I do have to work sometimes... lol) and am in awe of Stephen King once again. I've read almost every single of his books and I have to put this one up there with some of his absolute best, like The Stand and The Talisman. I am not going to go into the plot or any details, I'll just say reading this book was like being on the way up to the top of the tallest roller coaster ride. At points I felt like I was almost out of breath at the insane thrill ride. I felt like his characters were real to me and the story was so deftly plotted. Yes he foreshadows, as many people have mentioned in their reviews. I would have to say that if you don't like that, you might never want to read ANY Stephen King book, as he is the master at foreshadowing. I never felt as if it took away from any of the surprises in the book. It just made me want to read faster to find out what happens. I will admit that i occasionally skim over words or a paragraph or 2 in some large books just to get to my destination faster, or because certain parts are a tad bit boring, and I never felt the need to do that in this one. Lastly, kudos to his editors. Any book over a thousand pages long must be hell to edit and I ALWAYS notice typos. They jump right out at me and it irks me to no end. There was not a typo in this book. Excellent work! The cover is also breathtaking. Another masterpiece from one of my absolute favorite authors.』 (A must read . . .) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book was a real page turner. I expected nothing less from Stephen King. He is the master at creating unique characters and usually has a compelling plot for your enjoyment. Under the Dome has both . . . fascinating characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can. My favorite part of Under the Dome were the lessons that readers can take from this story. We all can learn to be better to others, especially in times of crises. I felt that Mr. King was spot-on in this book with how a society would react if faced with this situation. As for the ending . . . yes I understand how some people are upset with it, but I felt it was just right for the story. Overall, Under the Dome is a great book and a "must-have" for your Stephen King collection.』 (Speculative fiction, horror, suspense, mythology, and existentialism all in one.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I'm writing this, in part, to address some of the negative reviews: it's almost like there is a family of several different Stephen Kings. The first writes the horror that has made King the most famous. (The Shining, Carrie, Misery, It); his cousin writes mystery novels (Duma Key); a distant uncle writes long, involved post-apocalyptic fiction (The Stand); and an aunt-in-law writes modern speculative fiction (his short story collections). This is a book for all of them, but most of the horror is in the first 100 pages when people (spoiler) are running into the walls of the dome that comes down around a Maine town. After that, it's kind of Lord of the Flies meets No Exit and Last House on the Left. The story weaves an enormous amount of not-too-thinly-veiled liberal left-wing political commentary into intrigue, small-town violence, and Steve McQueen-type action. More than most of King's work, this is an incredibly political book. Many of the book's crises are centered around the town's leaders--who stupidly won't take orders from the President of the United States. One of King's less swift characters describes the president as,"a monkey." This is brave, and very satisfying. Who would like this book: fans of the non-horror-writing Steven King; people who are liberal or liberal-leaning; fans of Orson Scott Card-type science fiction (it has humanist religion overtones); existentialists; people who love corgis; and, western fans--there are gun battles, too. Who wouldn't like this book: people who are very politically conservative will find this offensive; fans of King's horror-only novels; finally, it's over 1,000 pages long, so, that's bad for some folks, although it might make a stylish doorstop.』 (What a page-turner!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I'm not going to recap the story in my review, since others have done so very skillfully. What I will say is I've been a King fan forever, and this was one of my favorite books by him. I just could not put the darn thing down until I finished it. If you buy it, plan to have a weekend set aside to read it cover to cover. You won't want to stop - trust me!』 『 AN INCREDIBLE UNABRIDGED AUDIO VALUE…OVER 35 HOURS ON ONLY THREE IPOD-READY MP3 CDS! On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as the dome comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out. This pair of reviewers knows a thing or two about the art of crafting a great thriller. Del Toro is the Oscar-nominated director of international blockbuster films, includingPan's LabyrinthandHellboy. Hogan is the author of several acclaimed novels, includingThe StandoffandPrince of Thieves, which won the International Association of Crime Writer's Dashiell Hammett Award in 2005. The two recently collaborated to write the bestselling horror novel,The Strain, the first of a proposed trilogy. Read their exclusive Amazon guest review ofUnder the Dome: ![]() The first thing readers might find scary about Stephen King'sUnder The Domeis its length. The second is the elaborate town map and list of characters at the front of the book (including "Dogs of Note"), which sometimes portends, you know, heavy lifting. Don't you believe it. Breathless pacing and effortless characterization are the hallmarks of King's best books, and here the writing is immersive, the suspense unrelenting. The pages turn so fast that your hand--or Kindle-clicking thumb--will barely be able to keep up.You Are Here. Nobody yarns a“What if?” like Stephen King. Nobody. The implausibility of a dome sealing off an entire city--a motif seen before in pulp magazines and on comic book covers--is given the most elaborate real-life alibi by crafting details, observations, and insights that make us nod silently while we read. Promotional materials referenceThe Standin comparison, but we likenUnder The Domemore to King's excellent novella,The Mist: another locked-door situation on an epic scale, a tour-de-force in which external stressors bake off the civility of a small town full of dark secrets, exposing souls both very good...and very, very bad. Yes, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," but there is so much more this time. The expansion of King’s diorama does not simply take a one-street fable and turn it into a town, but finds new life for old archetypes, making them morally complex and attuned to our world today. It makes them relevant and affecting once again. And the beauty of it all is that the final lesson, the great insight thatis gained at the end of this draining journey, is not a righteous 1950’s sermon but an incredibly moving and simple truth. A nugget of wisdom you'll be using as soon as you turn the last page. This Is Now. Along the way, you get bravura writing, especially featuring the town kids, and a delicious death aria involving one of the most nefarious characters--who dies alone, but not really--as well as a few laugh-out-loud moments, and a cameo (of sorts) by none other than Jack Reacher. Indeed--whether during a much-needed comfort break, or a therapeutic hand-flexing--you may find yourself wondering, "Is this a horror novel? Or is it a thriller?" The answer, of course, is: Yes, yes, yes. "...the blood hits the wall like it always hits the wall." It seems impossible that, as he enters his sixth decade of publishing, the dean of dark fiction could add to his vast readership. But that is precisely what will happen...when the Dome drops. Now Go Read It. --Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan The Story Behind the Cover

I can believe that the author is very familiar with how the military and JAG works. However, the characters don't have the the depth that some other successful writers of the genre provide. Although most of the reviews and descriptions don't reveal it, there is a definite "Christian romance" angle to this story that will not appeal to all. Even though it was a freebie, I just couldn't force myself to keep grinding through it. So, take this review with a grain of salt... It's always possible that, halfway through the book, the author made an abrupt about-face and everything got better. I do think that there is a good story buried somewhere in there. But the author's incredibly simplistic opinions of religion (Islam: bad, Christianity: good), and politics (Democrats: bad, Republicans: good), and his willingness to beat the reader over the head with those ideologies masked what might have been a moderately entertaining, (if predictable), military law novel. I tried to treat the book as simple fluff, ignoring the political and religious bias, but it was so intrusive as to be impossible. This might very well be a good book for readers who consider themselves Christians and are okay with a black and white world, wherein the author espouses his belief that Islam has always been a religion of violence, and that Democrats are all corrupt individuals standing in the way of justice.
