(Okay for a mature reader, great for the younger set.)
『I was expecting something great but was disappointed. After just finishing two other classics, Steinbeck's East of Eden and Lewis' Main Street, I thought I would continue in the classics mode. I am sure it was a great book in its time but if you are used to something like what I mentioned above, then it is not for you. If you are a young reader than I would highly recommend it. The stories are short and the language is not too difficult. The endings are somewhat predictable but maybe not for a younger reader.』

(A great introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes)
『I originally downloaded this collection of short stories in preparation for the Sherlock Holmes major motion picture that was coming out in 2009. As someone who had never read any of Sherlock Holmes' tales, this was a perfect introduction into the kind of stories Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned for the legendary Holmes and Dr. Watson.

The Kindle formatting could have used a little work; a currency sign that was apparently being used in the public domain version the Kindle version was "ported" from and instead of a currency sign being shown, miscellaneous characters were. But, all in all, a slight blip and nothing truly enjoyment-breaking.』

(A timeless hero)
『Spending so much of my day plugged into the internet, peering at my iPhone, staring at Excel spreadsheets, it has been an absolute pleasure reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes(on my Kindle, I must admit). I am reminded, in adventure after adventure, that there is no substitute for a sharp mind and astute observation. As I watch the master investigator calmly solve the most "singular" of mysteries through the eyes of Dr. James Watson, I almost want to myself be transported back to 19th century London.

If you haven't read any of Conan Doyle's stories, they are worth perusing. I only read a dozen of Holmes' adventures. But in those stories, I grew intimately close with both the detective and his trusty sidekick and doctor-cum-biographer, Watson. I came to admire Holmes' heroic stoicism, encyclopedic memory, and sharp wit.

Each of the adventures follows a somewhat similar plot structure. The adventure opens with a shot into Watson's or Holmes' personal life. You might hear briefly about Watson's life as a doctor, or get a glimpse of Holmes' tobacco, alcohol, or cocaine habits (yes, the rumors are true--Holmes does cocaine). At some point, Watson ends up at Holmes' pad on Baker Street. Both men are then found lounging, Holmes in his "dressing gown," both men likely smoking, drinking, and enjoying a fine meal, usually arms' length from a cozy fire.

Watson, the narrator, will then tell us how, in all of his time with Holmes, the case he is about to elucidate is the most "singular" one yet. Then one of them will see or hear someone approaching their home base; inevitably, the bell will ring and in will enter yet another all-but-hopeless client. We'll get a detailed description of the client's physical appearance, from the clothes on his or her back to the flushness of the face. We'll also always get an idea of what class the client falls into; most regularly, the clients are from higher classes. The client will give us a detailed account of his or her problems as Holmes and Watson listen intently. It is here that the reader is supposed to do the detective work to piece together clues to solve the case. Of course, most of what the client tells us seems unrelated and inane; Holmes will remind us that the simplest cases are the hardest ones, and the smallest of details often the most important.

In most cases, the client has a suspicion that the police's conclusions on the case were flawed. In almost every case, the police were consulted and ended up being wrong indeed. Holmes generally requires a trip to the crime scene, sometimes in costume, and the readers have the privilege to join him with Watson. But most trips are simply chances for Holmes to confirm what he already suspected. Guns may be drawn, extreme danger is almost always encountered, and Holmes emerges the hero. Holmes has a penchant for withholding his conclusions from us until the very end of the story, however, so as the reader follows Holmes' movements at the crime scenes, the reader must do some sleuthing as well.

Holmes will finally tell us what actually happened, and the seemingly innocuous clues from earlier in the chapter prove to be essential to the weaving of the truth. Holmes prefers to strike a deal with the crimes' perpetrators rather than offering them to the police. The clients offer to give Holmes unlimited reward for a job well done, and Holmes calmly requests only that which will defer the cost of his work. He gets enough pleasure out of a job professionally well-done.

Because of the similarities between stories, I recommend taking Holmes in limited doses. But his is a very powerful medicine, one that rejuvenates the mind and strengthens the character. As an example of someone who betters the world by doing what he loves, Sherlock Holmes is a timeless hero.』

(Timeless classic, priceless entertainment)
『I picked up the Sherlock Holmes Complete Collection because my mom had already downloaded it and I was mildly curious. Holmes was the best book I've read in a while, definately my favorite in the Mystery genre.

I love the characters. Doyle whips up such fantastically real people out of no where with the most outrageous situations and stories. The main characters are priceless. Holmes has a very deep compassion for humanity buried among his quirks and strange habits. Watson is such a genuine, sympathetic companion and narrator that it feels like a friend telling a story over coffee.

Let me put it this way, I'm bitterly upset that I finished the series. Bitterly. I wish with all my heart that I could just have a fresh Sherlock Holmes mystery every day. Definately a book I'll pick up again and recommend to everyone I know. My brother read them when he was a preteen/teenager, and I loved them at 24 y/o. I'm sure that a more mature audience would appreciate Holmes, also.』

(clasic sherlock)
『there is nothing like clasic sherlock holmes! the movie doesn't do it justice. I love this book! whoever said the cases were easy to solve must be a ton smarter than I am.』
『The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of the first twelve short stories based on the famous detective, including the cases of The Red-Headed League, The Speckled Band, and A Scandal in Bohemia. Holmes will need to use his various skills, including an aptitude for acting and disguise, tracking footprints, hand to hand combat, deciphering different types of tobacco ash, and knowledge of psychology to solve cases of blackmail, treachery and murder. Sherlock Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skilful use of deductive reasoning, astute observation, and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Deductive reasoning allows Holmes to impressively reveal a stranger's occupation. Similarly, by studying inanimate objects, he is able to make astonishingly detailed deductions about their owners. This mindset was a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, inspiring authors like Robert J. Sawyer, Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.』

『This was a page turner... Very hard to get started, but around page 30 things start to get easier to understand. There are many Vanger family members to keep straight at first, but then it's narrowed down to the main characters. Loved the characters, especially loved the intelligence of the girl and loved what she does to her abuser. This will make an excellent movie. So sorry that this author will no longer be writing, as this book is so well written. I'm also involved in a book club of nine women and everyone enjoyed this book.』

(Brilliant Page Turner)
『Mystery, suspense, great dialog, and intriguing analysis of personal relationships are just some of reasons why you will find yourself immersed in Stieg Larson's first novel.

This fast paced exciting novel centers around an investigation being conducted by Mikael Blomkvist, a somewhat burnt out journalist, who is on self imposed exile from his editorial duties at Millenium magazine due to an ongoing trumped up libel suit. Blomkvist is hired by an elderly, emotionally plagued, rich industrialist, to use his investigative skillset in trying to solve the 35 year old mystery of his missing 16 year old niece.

Larsen's description of his characters are vivid. It appears each member of the secluded Vanger clan sports some type of phobia, depression, or anxiety disorder. Wait to you meet Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood, tattooed, computer geek who assists Blomkvist in the investigation.

This nearly 600 page fiction is a quick read due to the literary prowness of Larsen. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars』

(Swedish murder mystery)
『I'm in the process of reading this fascinating book. Did you know there is a statue of limitations on murder in Sweden? There is no such limitation in the U.S. on murder. Makes me think about which is the better approach. I highly recommend this book because it's a great mystery and it also gives the reader a peek into a different culture.』

(You will not be able to put it down!)
『This book did not seem too interesting to me in the beginning but once I was past chapter 1, I was totally into it. The author started describing the lives of two different characters and I couldn't wait to see what can possibly bring them together.』

(Good, even if you don't like crime thrillers)
『Synopsis: Mikael Blomkvist is a financial journalist who has recently been convicted of aggravated libel of industrialist Hans Wennerstrom. Henrik Vanger is the head of the powerful Vanger Corporation, haunted by the disappearance of his niece, Harriet Vanger, decades ago. Henrik employs Mikael to review the evidence of the disappearance, convinced he will be able to help solve the mystery. Lisbeth Salander is an enigmatic security specialist originally hired by Vanger to provide information on Mikael, but who becomes further involved and assists Mikael in the investigation. The Vanger family history is more complicated than Mikael and Lisbeth could have imagined and the truth is more disturbing and dangerous than they are prepared for.

As a general rule, I really don't enjoy crime thrillers, they are just not my cup of tea. While I don't generally have a problem with violence in books, I'm not really into stories where violent acts and murder (usually against women) are the crux of the tale. I had thought I wouldn't read this book because of the genre, but I had heard such good things about it from reviews and friends who have read it I decided to put it on my TBR list, although it sat waaaaayyy down the bottom. Then the other day I got a voucher to purchase it for half price so I thought what the hey, I'll give it a read. Strangely, I really enjoyed this book, even though it reconfirmed for me that crime thrillers are not my thing. The depth of detail Larsson uses to create his characters gives the reader a visual sense of their life and the world they live in. I really love Salander as a character, Larsson has done a brilliant job of describing the world of a person with Asperger's syndrome from their own point of view. A small part of me groans at the stereotypical-ness of the fact that she is a genius, yet she really is a great and unique woman and one you SERIOUSLY don't want to mess with. The scene of her revenge against her abuser alone is worth reading the book for.

The large host of characters and many plot lines are what makes this book better than alot of other crime thrillers, Larsson keeps them clear and easy to follow and completes every part of the story, nothing is left unresolved. If you are a fan of crime thrillers you will undoubtedly love this book, if you are like me and they aren't your favourite genre I would still recommend stepping outside your genre square and give it a try. I have put the other two books on my TBR list and am looking forward to finding out more about Salander and Blomkvist.』

National Bestseller

An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson'sGirl with the Dragon Tattoocombines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pieced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.』

Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: Once you startThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you reallydon'twant to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

(Felt like I was in church)
『I was interested in the story line at first, but it just took forever to get to the end. I actually skipped alot of the parts and still didn't feel that I missed anything. Glad that I got it when it was free for Kindle because I would've really been upset if I paid for it. To much of a sermon for me.』

(Good vs evil Well written)
『WE must have these come across some of these folks in real life. Verv well written. Enjoy』

(Anyone who is not heavy into religion should skip it)
『Yikes, this one could have been far better without the multi page rants on finding God. Give us a break if we wanted to be in church we wouldn't be reading a murder mystery!』

(Not Just Christian Literature)
『I purchased this book as a Kindle freebie. If I was actually paying for it I probably would have first read the tags a little closer. I wasn't initially aware that it is Christian literature. That being said, I found the story and characters to be quite interesting and the Christian element to be a lesser part of the story line. All in all, I did enjoy reading this book.』

(Love this series!)
『This is the first book in the series, and I HIGHLY recommend you read the entire series. I am not into "religious" books, but these are the exception!』

『This was one of those books that I couldn't put down. I rarely cry while reading books but found myself doing it many times during this one. I thought Alice Sebold did a wonderful job of portraying feelings and really made you understand the characters .』

(Great book Horrible Movie)
『I really enjoyed this book. I bought it just before the movie came out. I waited to finish the book before I saw the movie and I am glad I did. The book is GREAT! The movie was so far off the book, it was hard for me to watch. I wish the movie would have stayed more true to the book. There is nothing more aggravating for me than a great book that is butchered by the movie.』

(Amazing read!)
『Everyone should read this book. It is a masterpiece. The end is a bit of a stretch to me, but it seems to work. Some may not agree with the end, but if you can accept that part and go with it, then it is well worth it.』

(Ending was a bummer...)
『This was a really good read...up until the end...which I WILL NOT SPOIL for anyone.
There are two things the writer could've (should've) done that would have made
this book excellent. I don't regret buying it though and I encourage others
to do so too. I still can't get over the ending though...』

(Good book)
『Bought this for my wife. She said it was a good read. Kinda sad though. Good read if you're going to watch the movie. Read this first.』

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. The Lovely Bonesis such a book - a phenomenal #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its narrative artistry, its luminous clarity of emotion, and its astoniishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on eath continue without her - her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling.

Out of unspeakable traged and loss,The Lovely Bonessucceeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy

"A triumphant novel. . . . It's a knockout." -Time

"Destined to become a classic in the vein ofTo Kill a Mockingbird.. . . I loved it." -Anna Quindlen

"A novel that is painfully fine and accomplished." -Los Angeles Times

"The Lovely Bonesseems to be saying there are more important things in life on earth than retribution. Like forgiveness, like love." -Chicago Tribune 』

『On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon ("like the fish") is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer--the man she knew as her neighbor, Mr. Harvey.

Alice Sebold's haunting and heartbreaking debut novel,The Lovely Bones, unfolds from heaven, where "life is a perpetual yesterday" and where Susie narrates and keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case. As Sebold fashions it, everyone has his or her own version of heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams," where "there were no teachers.... We never had to go inside except for art class.... The boys did not pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled; our textbooks wereSeventeenandGlamourandVogue."

The Lovely Bonesworks as an odd yet affecting coming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years like an episode ofMy So-Called Afterlife. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family, and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on Earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow." Though sentimental at times,The Lovely Bonesis a moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in the living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing characters. Sebold orchestrates a big finish, and though things tend to wrap up a littletoowell for everyone in the end, one can only imagine (or hope) that heaven is indeed a place filled with such happy endings.--Brad Thomas Parsons

(A breath of fresh air but not enough...)
『I have read a fair amount of Christian fiction and have become quite weary of it. The books are usually poorly written with mediocre story lines and always come off as preachy. "Daisy Chain" was a breath of fresh air to Christian fiction. The book was written very well. The author crafted her words carefully and her descriptions were vivid. Jedd was a very likable and endearing hero. The author had the guts to address a sensitive topic and I loved how all of her characters had their doubts and imperfections.

I only gave this book three stars for a couple of reasons. First off, I am a very avid reader. I usually devour a book within a few days. This book was hard for me to get into. It took me about a week to read it and I was bored at times. I'm not even sure if I will read the second one... The storyline plodded methodically along and I found it confusing when the book would randomly jump to 30 year old Jedd. I would have appreciated some kind of warning or transition that the book was going to a different time period. I loved Jedd and Sissy but I had a hard time with the adults in this book. ALL of them were completely dysfunctional and over-the-top. By the middle of the book I just wanted to scream, "Can we have one normal adult please?" I found it hard to connect with them.

Overall, this book was very thought-provoking and well written albeit boring at times.』

『Stephen King, take note: here's writing to aspire to.

The richest, most effective prose takes you on a journey you'll not soon forget in this wonderful novel. Not a purple word in the bunch, not a meretricious line to be found, nary a letter out of place. Mary E. DeMuth is the Rembrandt of novelists.

Characters and story so profound you'll wonder why the store bookshelves today are so filled with pulp.

(And by the way, I'm not Christian or Catholic. I'm not another prattling zealot. Just an average reader.)』

(Book Review of Daisy Chain by Mary E. DeMuth)
『"Bright, engaging, often sad and heartbreaking - all woven together with the elements of Christian life. Don't miss out on this one!"

Perhaps I loved this book because I live in the south. Perhaps I loved it because it provoked my memory to my early Christian walk. Perhaps I loved it because it just read like home to me. Whatever the reason, Mary E. DeMuth's `Daisy Chain` is forever etched into my memory as one of my favorite books.

In the summer of his fourteenth year, Jed Pepper's best friend, Daisy Marie Chance, has gone missing. Her last words to him, `You'll regret it', haunt him as he realizes that he is more afraid of father's retribution than of his friend's safety.

Jed is about to break free from childhood cares and be cast harshly into the real world where danger does exist and bad things do happen.

In the small town of Defiance and in the events that follow the day Daisy went missing, most (if not all) of the challenges Christians face are written into the various characters, making them come alive with the struggles we, as readers, face each day.

Struggles like Jed's feelings of failure for not protecting Daisy which prompt questions to and about God's providence. His view of God has been shaped by his father, who has allowed the rules of the Bible to choke out the grace he once knew in the beginning.

Jed asks himself question after question as he struggles to make sense of why a loving God would allow such a sadness. His memories of his best friend are almost too painful at times.

Meanwhile, as God surely does in our own lives at times, new friends enter his life revealing that yes - God has rules, and yes - God doesn't make sense sometimes, and yes - God will do as God pleases, but there is still joy to be known in friendship with an old black man named Hixon, there is still wonder to be known in an old bald women named Muriel, there is still messages of encouragement from his mother each morning.

This is a marvelous read. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series named `Slow Burn.'

『I can't forget Daisy. Her spunk, her creativity, her ability to see the best in others--she grabbed my heart from the beginning. But everything's not as it seems in Defiance, TX. Kids don't always come home, parents don't always have their child's best interest at heart, and love is often found in unlikely places. Gripping, haunting, uncomfortably real. I couldn't put it down.』

(Daisy Chain)
『If this book had not been written by a Christian author I would have quit with it early on. I do not like secular books about preachers, and christians that are shown in negative light. Because this was written by a Christian, I continued with it. The father, a preacher is abusive to his wife and children. But by the time I was finished with the book I was wanting the next....This is a trilogy.』
『The abrupt disappearance of young Daisy Chance haunts the small town of Defiance, Texas. Fourteen-year-old Jed Pepper searches for answers in this gritty and compelling story of love and sorrow, revealing God's hand of redemption in impossible situations. Lyrical fiction from a bright new literary talent.』

(Page-turning thriller with one heck of a hard-core heroine)
『I'm with others in that I found this better than Larsson's first in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Vintage). It was the hard-core Lisbeth's unique character that made the first one most enjoyable for me. In this one, she's not only back, she's back more hard core than ever and with much more at stake.

That's great, but what elevates it is that Larsson serves up a well-crafted, page-turning thriller (where continuing to turn the pages seemed a better option than getting much-needed sleep) filled with twists, turns, really bad guys and a heck of an ending. Then he interlaces it with story-relevant revelations about how she became who she is and what drives her rebellious spirit. It's a good combination that makes for a heck of a roller-coaster ride, snd lifts it above so many thrillers that sacrifice character development in favor of story.

(A thinking man's thriller)
『I did not particularly like "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. After the first 100 pages of "The Girl Who Played with Fire" I thought not again, this is boring. Trivial details on what furniture Lisbeth furnishes her apartment with, food she buys. Then something happened, the book took off, and kept on going. I could not put it down. I could not understand what Lisbeth saw in Blomkvist, as he was written very one dimensional in "Dragon-Tattoo. This time out you can almost feel the intensity as he sifts though a mountain of leads to get to the truth. Lisbeth was also very one dimensional to me, which could not have been further from the truth. A lean mean fighting machine, she will go the distance with anybody who abuses woman. I also liked the secondary characters on the police force. Bublanski and his female partner Modig complemented each other and the storyline. I guess I still do not see Lisbeth and Blomkvist as the the romantic couple some reviewers have made them out to be. Difficult to get to know, a women of few words/willing to share very little, probably on the autistic spectrum, Lisbeth still touched the lives of many around her. Blomkvist, Armansky, Paolo Roberto, in the midst of overwhelming evidence against her, trusted their instincts and had "Lisbeth's back". That to me was the essence of the story. This book is highly recommended.』

(Better Than the First)
『If you haven't read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, don't worry. Larsson gives the reader good, short summaries of what happened to Salander and Blomkvist in this sequel. That said, I recommend that you read Tattoo first so that you can get a better idea of who these characters are so that you know why their lives are interconnected the way they are.

Unlike Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire starts off with a great hook. Then it bogs a bit when Salander is on the beach, studying mathematical equations while watching a couple who is obviously having marital problems. If you read Tattoo, then you'll know that Salander has a big problem with abusive men. We don't find out why until her story begins to unfold after she is accused of three murders.

Once Blomkvist (Salander's former client) finds the bodies of his fellow journalists in their apartment, the pace picks up and doesn't stop. At this point, you have to pay attention because Larsson used several POVs to tell this story. I had to flip back a couple of pages more than once because I lost track of who was doing the narrating, if the "voice" of the character wasn't obvious.

I'm not sure which characters I enjoyed more, Lisbeth Salander or her arch enemies. You'll find plenty of mystery, corruption, bloodshed and murder between the pages of this book. You'll find out more about Lisbeth Salander, as well as shocking secrets about her life that even she didn't know. The last chapter was the most riveting I've read in a long time, although I felt that some aspects were a bit unrealistic. That doesn't matter, though. I'm hooked on Steig Larsson's stories and plan on reading his last book when it becomes available in May.

(The Girl Who Played With Fire)
『A terrific continuation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Stieg Larsson continues to provide a page turning saga of Lisbeth, an amazing lady with plenty of issues. Larsson again drew me into her character and kept me reading late into the night. Larsson's characters are not the beautiful, fantastic people of other authors but they all have flaws and none more serious that the female lead, Lisbeth. However, Larsson had me cheering for her throughout the book. His style is fresh and the story never lags. I am impatiently waiting for the next in the series, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, to be released in the US. I know that Larsson planned a ten book series for his heroine but sadly, after the third book he passed away. None the less, I highly recommend the first two in the series to anyone who enjoys mystery and action and I am sure that the third book will not disappoint.』

(great reading!)
『I had read the first book in 2 days, so I had to get the second one right away! He keeps you so into the story. I have been to Sweden twice so I know of some of the places he speaks of. I have already pre-ordered the next one. Can't wait.』
『Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. Two Millennium journalists about to expose the truth about the sex trade in Sweden are brutally murdered, and Salander's prints are on the weapon. Her history of unpredictable and vengeful behaviour makes her an official danger to society - but no-one can find her anywhere. Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist, editor-in-chief of Millennium, will not believe what he hears on the news. Knowing Salander to be fierce when fearful, he is desperate to get to her before she is cornered and alone. As he fits the pieces of the puzzle together, he comes up against some hardened criminals, including the chainsaw-wielding 'blond giant' - a fearsomely huge thug who can feel no pain. Digging deeper, Blomkvist also unearths some heart-wrenching facts about Salander's past life. Committed to psychiatric care aged 12, declared legally incompetent at 18, this is a messed-up young woman who is the product of an unjust and corrupt system. Yet Lisbeth is more avenging angel than helpless victim - descending on those that have hurt her with a righteous anger terrifying in its intensity and truly wonderful in its outcome.』
Amazon Best of the Month, July 2009:The girl with the dragon tattoo is back. Stieg Larsson's seething heroine, Lisbeth Salander, once again finds herself paired with journalist Mikael Blomkvist on the trail of a sinister criminal enterprise. Only this time, Lisbeth must return to the darkness of her own past (more specifically, an event coldly known as "All the Evil") if she is to stay one step ahead--and alive. The Girl Who Played with Fireis a break-out-in-a-cold-sweat thriller that crackles with stunning twists and dismisses any talk of a sophomore slump. Fans of Larsson's prior work will find even more to love here, and readers who do not find their hearts racing within the first five pages may want to confirm they still have a pulse. Expect healthy doses of murder, betrayal, and deceit, as well as enough espresso drinks to fuel downtown Seattle for months. --Dave Callanan

(Another great story by Terri Blackstock)
『Terri Blackstock has a great way with a story, it has everything a novel needs to keep you enthralled.
I read Cape Refuge and loved the storyline then started on Southern Storm and have become an fan of the people outlined in the storyline. It is a christian based book and one I would read again and again. Uplifting, suspenseful, mysterious, keeps you guessing about the 'bad guys' and loving the 'good guys'.
Will be buying more of Terri's books especially River's Edge.

(Too Much References to Praying, Etc.)
『I "purchased" this book because it was a Kindle freebie. Since I had already read the first Cape Refuge book and liked it, I thought this one would also go lightly on the Christian aspect. However, I was VERY wrong! There was way too much emphasis put on God, praying, etc. and not enough emphasis on the story line itself. I skipped over many paragraphs and even pages at a time just to bypass all the unneccesary parts in order to get at the actual story. I gave the book 2 stars simply because the basic story line/concept was good...all the rest, I could do without.』

(Another winner!)
『I am really enjoying this series! It is really easy to feel in touch with the characters.』

(I should have read the description more closely)
『I mistakenly thought this was a mystery thriller type of fiction. Really it is a Christian (10 more reasons why you should convert) book masquerading as detective fiction. It seems that the story line and plot are forced to try and adhere to the authors underlying desire to explain why we should all be good Christians. I found myself skipping over significant portions of the book, looking for where it would get back to the story. Not a good buy if you are looking for a detective / mystery / thriller - probably a good book if you are looking for Christian literature with a mild story to add interest. I'm sure I would have realized that if I had read a bit more about it before purchasing - so live and learn. The book ends when the Christianity issues are all dealt with - which unfortunatey is before some critical issues relating to closure around plot are resolved.』

(A Great Read)
『I hadn't read Terri Blackstock for a couple of years, but many thanks to the friend who loaned me THIS book -- now I want ALL in this series! I am now a permanent fan!』
『Police Chief Cade disappears after hitting and killing a man with his car. Without a trace, without a note, without taking clothes or his car or money, he is gone. When a witness says she saw Cade getting into a blue Buick with a woman before his disappearance, the newspapers report that Cade left town to be with her. Blair knows it doesn’t make sense for Cade to leave without word for any reason. The dead man is identified, and it soon becomes clear that the woman Cade was seen with was the wife of the dead man. Newspapers begin to ask hard questions. Was the Cape Refuge Chief of Police having an affair with this woman? Did he deliberately kill her husband, then make it look like an accident? When the police department receives a handwritten note from Cade that he has run off to get married to a woman he’s kept secret, everyone breathes a sigh of relief. But Blair notices his unusual signature: Matt Cade. Cade nevergoes by his first name, and he especially never calls himself "Matt." She thinks it’s a signal from him that the contents of the note are false. Meanwhile, around the south, there are news reports about babies being kidnapped from area hospitals. When a ransom call comes to Hanover House fromthe baby’s kidnapper, they are all shocked to see that the phone it is traced to is Cade’s cell phone. Is he involved in the babies’ disappearance? Is that why he’s disappeared?』

(A good read)
『I happened to catch this when it was on the Kindle bestseller list for free. I read the reviews and it looked ok so I downloaded it. I liked the author's writing style and it's a pretty good story. Had a plot twist I didn't see coming.

The author made the protagonist human. Which is good. He is also kind of a putz, which is not.

I would read another book by this author.』

(Good story but a little predictable)
『This was an interesting story and a quick read. However, I felt it was a bit predictable. I guessed the major plot twist long before it was revealed. I also felt the characters could have used more development. It's probably a one-time read for me.

The Kindle edition was well-formatted. I didn't notice any glaring issues at all.』

(Excellent story)
『I really enjoyed this book, I could not put it down. The way it is written is unusual, but it works well. I highly recommend it.』

(Complex story in a quick read)
『This story alternates between 1968 and 1980 in Two Rivers, Vermont. In 1968, the year Harper was 22, he became a widower on the same day he became a father. His life came to a standstill that day, not only because he had lost Betsy, the girl he had loved since childhood, but because of his involvement in a crime. In 1980, Harper is still consumed with guilt and grief, but is trying to be a loving father to his 12-year-old daughter.

When a passenger train plunges into the waters of Two Rivers, it's Harper's guilt that leads him to take a survivor into his home, even though she's only 15, pregnant and black -- and Two Rivers is almost entirely white. The girl's presence forces Harper to examine his feelings and look at his past. As he does, Harper's relationship with Betsy is slowly unveiled. The full story of the crime is unveiled even more slowly. The back story also reveals Harper's and Betsy's relationships with their parents, as well as their parents' relationship with each other and each parent's role in the marriage.

There are numerous components to the story, including race relations in the 1960s, the role of women in that era, and the Viet Nam war and its effect on young people's plans for college and marriage. There are also some surprising plot twists.

I wasn't familiar with this author before this was offered as a free Kindle edition. I appreciate the introduction and will definitely look for more of her work. Highly recommended.』

("Melancholy is at the bottom of everything, just as at the end of all rivers is the sea." Henri Amiel)
『Harper Montgomery works at the railroad station and lives conservatively with his daughter, Shelly. He's still grieving his wife's death, twelve years ago.

One day, he's informed of a train derailment in Two Rivers, Vermont. There are people still trapped in the train. Harper runs to the train and goes into the river, then climbs into one of the train cars but isn't able to help anyone. Back on the shore, he sees a young girl with "...skin the color of blackberries." Her clothes are wet from the river and she needs a place to stay.

Harper remembers an event connected to his wife's death and permits her to move into his small home with his daughter. Later, it turns out that the girl is expecting a child and came to Two Rivers looking for her brother. Harper fears what this might mean.

This plot driven novel dwells on Harper's turmoil throughout the book. He's guilty of an incident that happened long ago and his melancholy mood becomes depressing to read. It feels as if he should get counseling and move on with his life.

The setting in rural Vermont is well described and picturesque.
However, the gloomy mood of the novel took prevented a more enjoyable read.』

『In "Two Rivers", Vermont, Harper Montgomery is living a life overshadowed by grief and guilt. Since the death of his wife twelve years earlier, Harper has narrowed his world to working at the local railroad and raising his daughter, Shelly. Still wracked with sorrow over his loss and plagued by his role in a brutal, long-ago crime, he wants only to make amends for his past mistakes. Then one day, a train derails in Two Rivers and Harper finds a chance at atonement. One of the survivors, a pregnant fifteen-year-old girl, needs a place to stay, and Harper offers to take her in. But soon he suspects that Maggie's appearance is not the simple case of happenstance it first appeared to be.』

(The Albrecht Durer Code)
『The Lost Symbol might as well have been called The Albrecht Durer Code (though that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well). It follows the same tired and true formula that made Dan Brown filthy rich with his previous thriller---including many of the same flaws, but often even worse.

There are too many such flaws to go into specifics, so I'll just discuss a few in general terms. For starters, the plot is surprisingly predictable, despite some glaring holes calculated to accommodate what are supposed to be shocking twists. Also, despite having obviously done loads of research, Brown sometimes gets his facts wrong---whether he deliberately distorts them to suit his purposes and hopes the reader won't notice, or whether he just flubbed it, it's difficult to tell.

Then there is the ridiculous pseudo-scientific premise, which is far more wildly implausible than that of The Da Vinci Code. Brown basically buys into, and propagandizes for, a New Age interpretation of every brand of mysticism in history he comes across---faith healing, astral projection, the Deepak Chopra interpretation of quantum mechanics, and on and on. But he claims (quite falsely, I assure you) that these are not New Age ideas, but real cutting-edge science.

If you can somehow manage to suspend your disbelief about all this nonsense, there are a few exciting scenes buried in the middle of the novel, and some interesting characters (too many of whom meet untimely ends). But the ending returns to bad Platonic and other varieties of mystical philosophy, and is pretty much just disappointing. The denouement goes on way too long, and the sorts of "scientific" experiments Brown describes as supposedly proving all this are laughably bad (rather than "conclusive and irrefutable" as he claims they would be), as are the arguments put forth to show that the Bible (as well as the scriptures of other religions) contain scientific wisdom beyond modern understanding (but that "our science may one day catch up with the wisdom of the ancients").

Then there is the theme, namely that the truth (or at least Dan Brown's incredibly misguided version of it) must be kept hidden from the masses by a self-appointed elite. This is perhaps the most offensive element of the book. But most of Brown's readers are probably not the sort who think too much about the novel's philosophical underpinnings, so Brown can spill his guts about it and not worry too much about those masses (who comprise his readership) catching on.

Bottom line: if you liked The Da Vinci Code, you will probably enjoy this; if not, don't bother.』

(Really - $3 less than hardback?)
『Okay, I'm not understand why the Kindle book is only $3 less than a HARDCOVER book! Does it really cost only $3 to print a book?

Highway robbery.』

(A pleasant surprise!)
『I figured the next book about Robert Langdon would be more along the lines of Angels and Demons, mostly because the DaVinci Code was just a perfect storm of a wonderful story. But I was pleased with this story, it's background and what I was able to learn about the Nation's capital in a manner that was entertaining.
My husband didn't care for the book because it was full of anxiety and conflict, and he was reading it on vacation where he was looking for rest and relaxation. I enjoyed the the page turning desire it created!』

(Opt for "Mightier than the Sword")
『Honestly, I think Dan Brown's best book was "Angels and Demons". Note the word "book" not movie. But some of his critics are too harsh. Yes arguably the ending of "The Lost Symbol" was anticlimatic, but I think it was appropriate. And as for the "Da Vinci Code", no author will ever have his protagonist find the Holy Grail because then you would have to describe it etc.

A good read though if you like well-paced plots (and a more satisfying ending) would be debut author Megan Webster's novel which just came out on Amazon I think about a month ago. It's called "Mightier than the Sword" and I highly recommend it.』

(Ending was a disappointment)
『Let's be honest - we're not looking for great works of literature when we read Dan Brown novels. However, we do expect an engaging story with lots of interesting twists and surprises. I really enjoyed Deception Point and Angels&Demons, and I found the DaVinci Code to be a bit of a letdown (mainly because it seems to be a novelized version of Holy Blood, Holy Grail; there is no question that it was the primary - and possibly only - source for the DaVinci Code.) This novel reminds me of Angels&Demons; it gets off to a great start and it's very hard to put down. Unfortunately, Brown's novels are becoming a little too formulaic (you can easily guess "who" Mal'akh is well before its revealed) for my taste. I hope he does something entirely different with the next one. The other major negative, as a lot of other reviewers have pointed out, is that the ending is a huge disappointment. The novel does a terrific job of building up to something truly amazing, and at the end you kind of think, "Oh, that's it?"

In this stunning follow-up to the global phenomenonThe Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown demonstrates once again why he is the world’s most popular thriller writer. The Lost Symbolis a masterstroke of storytelling--a deadly race through a real-world labyrinth of codes, secrets, and unseen truths . . . all under the watchful eye of Brown’s most terrifying villain to date. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, D.C.,The Lost Symbolaccelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale.

As the story opens, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned unexpectedly to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. Within minutes of his arrival, however, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object--artfully encoded with five symbols--is discovered in the Capitol Building. Langdon recognizes the object as an ancient invitation . . . one meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of esoteric wisdom.

When Langdon’s beloved mentor, Peter Solomon--a prominent Mason and philanthropist--is brutally kidnapped, Langdon realizes his only hope of saving Peter is to accept this mystical invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon is instantly plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations--all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth.

As the world discovered inThe Da Vinci CodeandAngels&Demons, Dan Brown’s novels are brilliant tapestries of veiled histories, arcane symbols, and enigmatic codes. In this new novel, he again challenges readers with an intelligent, lightning-paced story that offers surprises at every turn. The Lost Symbolis exactly what Brown’s fans have been waiting for . . . his most thrilling novel yet.

『Let's start with the question every Dan Brown fan wants answered: IsThe Lost Symbolas good asThe Da Vinci Code? Simply put, yes. Brown has mastered the art of blending nail-biting suspense with random arcana (from pop science to religion), andThe Lost Symbolis an enthralling mix. And what a dazzling accomplishment that is, considering that rabid fans and skeptics alike are scrutinizing every word.

The Lost Symbol
begins with an ancient ritual, a shadowy enclave, and of course, a secret. Readers know they are in Dan Brown territory when, by the end of the first chapter, a secret within a secret is revealed. To tell too much would ruin the fun of reading this delicious thriller, so you will find no spoilers here. Suffice it to say that as with many series featuring a recurring character, there is a bit of a formula at work (one that fans will love). Again, brilliant Harvard professor Robert Langdon finds himself in a predicament that requires his vast knowledge of symbology and superior problem-solving skills to save the day. The setting, unlike other Robert Langdon novels, is stateside, and in Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fascinating as Paris or Vatican City (note to the D.C. tourism board: get your "Lost Symbol" tour in order). And, as with other Dan Brown books, the pace is relentless, the revelations many, and there is an endless parade of intriguing factoids that will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Langdon and the guys fromMythbusters.

Nothing is as it seems in a Robert Langdon novel, andThe Lost Symbolitself is no exception--a page-turner to be sure, but Brown also challenges his fans to open their minds to new information. Skeptical? Imagine how many other thrillers would spawn millions of Google searches for noetic science, superstring theory, andApotheosis of Washington. The Lost Symbolis brain candy of the best sort--just make sure to set aside time to enjoy your meal.--Daphne Durham

(Great Book!!)
『I just received the Kindle as a Christmas present. I had heard about the free books that I could download, so I downloaded a few within the first week of owning the Kindle. As this book was a freebie, I wasn't expecting much. I was wrong. This book kept my interest from the beginning. I just finished it a few minutes agon and I'm online now to find more books written by the author.』

(Good story)
『I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure at first being a Kindle freebie but I was plesently suprised. A good story that kept me reading.』

(Enjoyable but light)
『This book was enjoyable but a "quick read". Romantic rather than mysterious but the few main characters are well drawn.』

(Disappointing)
『I was looking for a romance thriller. This book was neither. The characters were not interesting. The mystery was easy to figure out. I resented the forced religous passages that seemed tossed in as an afterthought. Don't waste your time.』

(well worth reading)
『I had a great time reading this book. Great character description, very believable storyline. Held my interest to the end!』

She couldn't turn her back on her family in their time of need. So when her sister was injured, financial expert Andrea Hampton traded the big city for Amish country to help turn her grandmother's house into an inn.

But life with the Plain People took a treacherous turn when a string of accidents and pranks threatened her family. Someone didn't want the secrets the old house harbored to come to light. Trusting anyone-- even the handsome carpenter who seemed so genuine--was a battle for Andrea, but her life depended on her ability to find the truth.
