Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Started at 5 stars, then...) 『Like being at a nerdy cocktail party playing "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" with statistics, but without the cocktails. Great hook with the speculation that legalizing abortion resulted in decreased crime rate, but downhill from there as the comparisons become more labored and tedious. Couldn't bring myself to finish it.』
(Ok at best) 『Decent but the cool title probably has as much or more to do with this books popularity than anything.』
(Awesonomics) 『This book is a great book for anyone interested in economics. It takes you on a journey of unexpected correlations and defies conventional wisdom. The book shows you truths you never would of expected or thought of with bamboozling statistics and data. It is an easy, enjoyable book for ages 18-168. Also the book is not very long and keeps you entertained. Levitt and Dubner team up to be an awesome duo and they are by far some awesome economists. I high recommend it. Enough Said.』
(Must Own) 『Everyone and anyone should own this book. Humorous insight to the world from an economic point of view without using the wordy terminology.』
(A cool brain teaser) 『Want to look smart at a party? Need a perfect ice-breaker? Want to be witty and charming by "spontaneously" sharing few interesting and/but weird facts with your colleagues? This is a book for you. It offers totally new insight to the facts that might seem to have nothing in common from the first glance, is witty and captivating - great book to relax on your free time, but still, with getting some intelectual stimulation. My personal favourite chapter is about how names "determine" kid's future. Want to know more? You'll have to read it.』

(A Happy Ending) 『Jeanette Walls's Glass Castle was a compelling story that is both familiar and unfamiliar to the common reader. Her real life horror story ultimately renews faith in human beings. Despite the horror these kids face throughout their childhood, they get a fairy tale happy ending. Glass Castle makes you wonder if you could survive an upbringing like this one and live to tell about it. The memoir begins with meeting the Walls family living in a dilapidated trailer of a home. Jeanette's earliest memory is of cooking hotdogs at the age of three and badly burning herself with boiling water. What a terrible first memory to have. What kind of lucid parents would allow their three-year old to cook on a stove? These kinds of horrible stories occur throughout the book, and are why the book is so interesting to read. The average person isn't familiar with that sort of neglect therefore Glass Castle familiarizes you with what it would be like to be part of a family like Jeanette's. It's hard to sympathize with parents who have potential to provide a stable lifestyle for their family but refuse to act upon it. Rex was a mastermind with his hands, holding down jobs as an electrician, and drawing up architectural plans for the "glass castle". Jeanette's mother Rose Mary had a college degree for teaching but refused to hold down a stable career because it simply bored her. The book was difficult to put down because it constantly kept you guessing what kind of ridiculous things you'll come across next. The memoir, familiar to the reader, shows us a family that is trying desperately to live the American Dream while going through trials and tribulations. What's not relatable to the reader, the fact that they screw it up every single time. The kids became very acquainted with a practice known as the "skedaddle." This was something Rex invented to run from the government who wanted to collect taxes and wanted payments on bills. The family bounced from Arizona, to California, and to West Virginia. In all these places they had a chance to start over, but all of these dreams were shattered when the parents started back on their old ways. Readers can sympathize with struggle and failure, yet the parent's malfunction in providing for their children time and time again becomes irreconcilable. The one redeeming quality of the novel is that the family tries desperately to stick together even when it's bad for them. Even when the kids were at points of near-starvation, they would always find a way to stay on their feet by working together. Whether this meant holding down odd jobs, or scrounging for food in school trash cans, they managed to get by. This is an admirable trait, because ultimately the reader wants the family to make it through. Glass Castle makes you realize that all the awful things you thought couldn't happen, can. Most parents have warned their children about perverts while not really believing it could happen. Here, it happens in many different ways. Phoenix was very hot during the summer. Rex and Rose Mary saw the only way to cool the house was by leaving the doors and windows open at all times, even at night. Perverts entered the house, Jeanette was molested by one, and the parents didn't even show concern at this disgusting act against their daughter, let alone agree to lock the door. Throughout the book instances of molestation or near molestation occur right under the parent's noses. How could you allow such a thing to happen to your children? This book opens your eyes as to the fact that these things have to be happening more so than we commonly think. Throughout the book the family drags you through their living nightmare to finally renew your faith in a happy ending. In the middle of the squalor of Welch WV, Jeanette finds her true calling in. She becomes involved in her high school newspaper and falls in love with the idea of writing for a career. She vows to herself to get out of Welch and out of the hold her parents have on her terrible life. At this point in the novel you finally feel a little sense of relief that these kids will make it out. After raising money on their own, they flee their parents grasp and head to New York City. There they find jobs, and create relationships and families of their own. As a reader, we finally see a happy ending that justifies the struggle.
Glass Castle is a story of the redemption of a family and the struggle to live the American dream. It's a story of starting over and realizing that people regardless of their past can have a future. Despite having hell for a childhood, these kids bonded together and walked through fire and came out alive. 』
(Wonderfully engaging memoir) 『Ms Walls has written an amazing memoir. She tells her story with humor and without self-pity. This is one of those books that you tell everyone you know to read. It's one of those rare ones that I will keep and re-read. Great job! Looking forward to reading her other books.』
(Your first teachers.....) 『are always your parents. Jeannette Walls learned a lot from her parents, despite the hardships and abuse. Luckily she was able glean the positive lessons: to dream, from her father, and to pursue her artistic talents, from her mother. Her parents were obviously mentally ill people and I figure she knows that now but did not understand that as a child. Her fascinating memoir was fast paced and seems like a series of slides, making it somewhat shattered, like her life, but I could not put it down. The writing style is more journalistic than literary, but the story makes up for all that. While reading it I did wonder how she remembered all the early years, but I supposed that she and her siblings must have discussed them, they seemed believable. I recommend this book and I am not a fan of autobiography in general, though I did love Angela's Ashes and do plan to read The Liar's Club now.』
(Fantastic book) 『This book grabs your attention starting on page one, plus its very humerous; sometimes i would re-read parts because it was so funny!』 『Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.
Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.
What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.
For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor.』
『Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. InThe Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover.--Brangien Davis』

(Repetitive) 『The book is alright. Seems to me like a lot of it is repeated over and over. He spends more time telling you what he is going to tell you than actually telling it. Does offer some good insights though.』
(great enlightening book!) 『I loved this book! It offers an insight on relationships I hadn't previously thought about. It also gives ways to put the theories into practice. I definitely recommend it (and I'm making my family members read it!).』
(Required reading for couples) 『This guy's got a handle on how good relationships go bad and how to prevent it with just some simple common sense effort. This will not save a marriage where one or both partners is just not a good person. But many times, two really good people just can't get it to work and this explains why and gives the easiest solutions in the world. If I was a marriage counselor, I would send my clients home with two copies of this book on the first appointment.』
(will positively change your approach to relationships) 『I bought this book on the recommendation of TWO friends who thought it would help me understand and explain some recent dating miscommunication and other assorted shenanigans, and wow... it did help.
It had never occurred to me that other people expressed their affection in ways I didn't. I always sought verbal validation, quality time, quality conversation... that's me. If I'm not getting that, I feel like you aren't into me, you don't like me, you aren't interested in what I have to say, etc. Other things are nice add-ons, but at my core, this is what I need to feel loved.
It also made me realize what a lot of the dysfunction in my previous marriage was. I've started categorizing everyone in my life by how they feel appreciated and cared for, and I do feel that all my relationships, romantic and otherwise, will flourish and be helped by the understanding this small book brought to me.
Don't be close minded and put off by the Christian bent. I'm not big into the religious thing, but if you can separate any biases you have and be objective about the universal truths and lessons offered in this book, I think you'll find you gain a lot. Look at it this way -- all religions teach love and compassion, and this is just another way to learn that and be a more loving, understanding and thoughtful person.』 『
Are you and your spouse speaking the same language? While love is a many splendored thing, it is sometimes a very confusing thing, too. This can lead to misunderstanding, quarrels, and even divorce. Quality Time Words of Affirmation Gifts Acts of Service Physical TouchDr. Gary Chapman identifies five basic languages of love and then guides couples towards a better understanding of their unique languages of love. Learn to speak and understand your mate's love language, and in no time you will be able to effectively love and truly feel loved in return.Skillful communication is within your grasp!Click here for the Study Guide for Spouse and Group Discussion
』 『Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.
How do you discover your spouse’s – and your own – love language? Chapman’s short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.
Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like–hoping the feelings of affection will follow later– a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal&Paperback Book Set.』

Topics covered are praise (false praise), teen rebellion, sibling rivalry, race, sleep, lying and gifted children and parents too involved. This book is well written. You do not have to have a doctorate to understand it.
The section on praise made me think. The author's do not support false or too much praise. False praise can bring a different set of problems. They continue by discussing arguments which are not all bad. Neither is all violent television shows bad. I guess all those "violent" cartoons I watched as a child weren't so bad after all.
NurtureShock is well written and easy to understand. This is not a child raising manual as much as a compilation of articles from recent studies. Most of the information as I stated before is common sense. Kids need sleep but do not usually get enough. Kids lie because there is no punishment for lying. If we over award our children eventually they will do nothing without an award. This book gave me a lot to think about.』

Why do cross-racial friendships decrease in schools that are more integrated? If 98% of kids think lying is morally wrong, then why do 98% of kids lie? What's the single most important thing that helps infants learn language? NurtureShockis a groundbreaking collaboration between award-winning science journalistsPo Bronsonand Ashley Merryman. They argue that when it comes to children, we've mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis, they demonstrate that many of modern society's strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring--because key twists in the science have beenoverlooked. Nothing like a parenting manual, the authors' work is an insightful exploration of themes and issues that transcend children's (and adults') lives.』

『This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleis just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks.--Joan Price』

Just on the news this week they were talking about how 50% of the US population will be obese or overweight soon and how obesity overtaking smoking as the number 1 killer in America.
you don't need to stop eating meat to benefit from this book, but greatly cutting down on the amount and being very careful of where it comes from will be very beneficial.
what's great about this book is that it provides scientific data from decades of research and the study is still ongoing.
I'd also highly recommend the movie Food Inc which Martha Stewart just showcased on her show this week.』
(Reading just the first fourth of the book turned me into a vegetarian.) 『All my life I scoffed at vegetarianism, even though both my brilliant adult children have been on it for decades. Stupid of me. But THE CHINA STUDY opened my eyes. Late in life all right, I'm 85, but for about 20 years since my triple bypass I've steered clear of red meat. Ate lots of fish, fruits, veggies and nuts. My numbers were pretty good and at least I haven't had any more heart procedures, but I still noticed a sharp rise in energy within 72 hours of going vegan. As a result, I've gone off of several of my medications and continue to feel fine without pumping so many toxic pills into my body.
Unless you're part of the food or medical community, THE CHINA STUDY will blow your mind. You owe it to yourself to read it--right away.

(5 Stars for The China Study) 『This book has immediate eye-opening impact. I read 3 chapters the first night and the next morning I was so convinced by the research and evidence presented by Dr. Campbell that I became an instant "vegan". Granted I was already a vegetarian but I loved eating my homemade yogurt, milk kefir, and some cheeses. You may say you have heard it all before (e.g., a diet high in fruits, vegetables and grains is the healthiest way of eating) but Dr. Campbell displays his life time of scientific research and personal experience in such a factual manner that you cannot deny the truth of it and you cannot deny the detrimental effects that eating animal products (including eggs and especially dairy) has on your body. Dr. Collin's son, Thomas M. Campbell, helps display this information in a wonderfully readable and convincing manner. I was eager to read it from cover to cover (and I highly recommend you do the same to get the full impact). I originally checked the book out of the library and half way through it I knew I wanted to own it so I purchased 3 copies from Amazon so I could have loaners for friends and family.』
(Through no fault of the sender, the item never arrived) 『After waiting for a couple of weeks for my item to arrive, I checked the package tracking. The seller had taken the item to USPS immediately following my purchase of the item, and USPS stated that it was delivered to my address two days later. After checking with my apt leasing office, the local PO, and everyone in between, I was basically informed by USPS that I have no recourse to recover my money, as according to them, the package was delivered. The seller was as helpful as could be under the circumstances, and assisted me with obtaining tracking info, as well as making suggestions for contacting local POs, etc. However, I will NEVER purchase a product that is being shipped USPS again and recommend that others don't either. The USPS was unhelpful, slow, and pretty rude. I have never had these issues with UPS or FedEx, and I order online fairly regularly (although this experience makes me hesitate to continue doing so.)』

Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" byThe New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

(Steve Harvey hit home on this one...) 『Succumbing to all the hype and hoopla over this Steve Harvey book: "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," I broke down and ordered this book from Amazon.com over this past summer. My college buddy, Toi, and I decided to read it together, especially since both of us are single, we wanted to find out what men are truly thinking, etc. We needed to hear it from a man's perspective; a man who was secure and open to offer all their secrets.
Needless to say, I was very impressed with this book. I even ear-marked, highlighted and wrote in the margins my little 2 cents, so that I may later read back and either crack up or have a personal "aha moment."
However, I just have one minor critical comment. As an author myself, it was obvious to me that Steve didn't actually write this book, but that it was penned by an ingenious Ghost Writer. Not that I myself is all that brilliant, actually, it's just that the end of the book was written by someone else, as the styles were completely different. Thus, I will deduce that Steve Harvey actually wrote the ending of this book, especially since it could have used some polishing, editing, etc. Now, why didn't this Ghost Writer edit that man's stuff? A real faux paus there, but other than that; a brilliant read.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. You will "laugh" where appropriate; "think" when necessary; and "change" to accommodate.

Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. InAct Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds lights on concepts and questions such as:
—The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man?
—How to spot a mama's boy and what if anything you can do about it.
—When to introduce the kids. And what to read into the first interaction between your date and your kids.
—The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is.
— And more...

Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section of the book, answering dozens of new questions and including loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, the Fourth Edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses the most current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk food–dependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be.
Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect fromWhat to Expect... only better.
Amazon.com Exclusive An Essay from Heidi Murkoff What to Expectstarted with information--or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time--I didn't have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn't as easy to find out what to expect as you'd think. I createdWhat to Expect When You're Expectingbecause I couldn't find the answers to my questions or the reassurance for my worries that I was searching for in the pregnancy books I read (and believe me, I read plenty). I was a mom on a mission--a mission to help other moms and dads worry less and enjoy their pregnancies (and their babies, and their toddlers) more. And I've been on that mission ever since.
So what sent me back to recreateWhat to Expect--for a fourth time? Today, there's definitely no lack of information on pregnancy. In fact there's more information than ever before (a quick online search of pregnancy or a glance at pages and pages of pregnancy and parenting options right here on Amazon will clue you in on that). But often what's still hard to find is the right kind of information. Information that's accurate yet empathetic, reassuring yet realistic--that empowers you, but doesn't overwhelm or confuse you, that guides you but doesn't dictate to you. And it's not just about the right information, it's about information that's presented in the way that's most helpful--easy to access, easy to digest, easy to use. It's about information that makes your pregnant life less stressful--more enjoyable, and, well, easier.
The fourth edition is a newWhat To Expectfor a new generation of readers--you!--and I'm excited to say it's the bestWhat To Expectyet. It's packed with all new information, of course (since things tend to change quickly in the baby-making and baby-delivering business--something you're probably all too aware of already if you've made more than one trip to the birthing room). But it doesn't only take into account what's new in obstetrics and what's new in pregnancy; it takes into account what's relevant to pregnant women now. Lifestyle. Working. Eating on the run. Juggling the pregnant life with real life. Keeping up with relationships. Birthing options that are family friendly and pregnancy care that incorporates the best that complimentary and alternative medicine has to offer. Managing multiples (which more and more moms are carrying). Sorting out the information from the misinformation--the reality from the hype, fact from Internet legend.
The fourth edition also takes into account how you likely use books these days, so the format is even more accessible than ever. More geared to in-the-moment, find-it-in-a-flash reading.
Most important of all, the fourth edition celebrates pregnancy. I have a passion for pregnancy, and always have. I love moms, I love dads, and I love babies. But everything about this fourth edition from the happy, excited mom-to-be on the cover, proudly caressing her beautiful belly and its even more beautiful contents, to the adorable week-by-week description of the making of your baby, to the positive (yet realistic), mom-to-mom tone throughout--this fourth edition is not just an explanation of those 9 amazing (though often bewildering) months you have ahead of you. It's a celebration of them.
What to Expect When You're Expectingfourth edition is everything moms and dads have come to expect fromWhat to Expect... only better. And I can't wait to start sharing it with you.
I guess you can say--I'm a proud mama all over again.

I can pretty much always quiet my baby by holding him in the crook of my arm, on his side, with a pacifier and shaking my elbow to give him what my husband and I have termed "the bobble head". The author is a little full of himself, but it is worth the read if only to read other parent's "positions" for quieting a fussy baby.』
(A must have for any parents!) 『My husband and I dove into the baby literature when we found out we were pregnant, and read most of the popular books out there. Happiest Baby on the Block was by far the most useful and informative. Caring for our child has been a much more pleasant experience thanks to the information in this book. I am so thankful to Dr. Karp for writing this and allowing us to enjoy the first few months with our newborn, instead of spending the time frazzled and frustrated. Thank you, Dr. Karp! Those of you on the fence, PLEASE read this book!』
(Just buy it!) 『Great advice for calming your newborn. It has worked great for us. Buying this is a no-brainer.』
(Happiest Baby) 『This is a very good book for any new parent! I read it, and passed it along to my sisters for their own kids.』
(A Must Have For First Time Parents) 『If you are a first time parent you need to read this book! My husband and I had a tough time getting our newborn boy to sleep in the first few weeks so a friend told us to read this book, after one attempt at the 5 S's, he went to sleep like a champ and it worked for a long time. I give this book as a gift to all first time parents, its awesome!』 『In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries—an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.
No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.
Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic.“I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.”
In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:
The Missing Fourth Trimester:as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.
The Calming Reflex:the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.
The 5“S’s”:the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too.
The Cuddle Cure:the perfect mix the 5“S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.
In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:
What is colic?
Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?
How can a parent calm a baby—in mere minutes?
Can babies be spoiled?
When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?
How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?
Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.』

The book sat on the shelf for a couple weeks, completely untouched. Out of the blue, well, perhaps because it was raining outside, I started reading. It took just a couple of days to read, but I feel as though I have lived through every days chronicled by the parents of a 5-year old girl, Alena.
In the opening chapter, Alena's father finds yet another letter by now deceased Alena. He tucks the letter in his briefcase, unable to open. On the last letter he opened, Alena wrote "I am sorry that I am sick."
The next chapter flashes back to the day parents are told that Alena has just 135 days to live. The writer switches back-and-forth between father and mother, giving their honest account over 256 days Alena goes on to live.
As I continued, a strange thing happened. Instead of feeling depressed, I felt fortunate and very thankful to have a healthy 11-month old son. I don't know what the future will bring, but I feel very thankful for every days since birth, reaffirming my commitment to be a better father. Instead of feeling sorry for the parents, I want to thank them for opening up and sharing their private thoughts.
This is a beautiful book, filled with photographs of Alena and several of her drawings (more of the drawings are on the book's website).』
(It should be required reading for all...) 『This should be required reading for all...those that have children, those considering children, those who love children, those who loathe children. For ALL. For the employer (the world's number one retailer) who won't give me the week following Christmas as vacation to spend with my family, read this. It's not about the almighty dollar, and you may not read about it in your Wall Street Journal. It's about family, love, triumph and eventually tragedy. But in the end Elena left us so much more. And I thank her parents for sharing her story. Personally, I'm glad the story wasn't preachy, but provided a more realistic point of view. Would spiritual guidance have offered them more peace, and/or better selections than what they have made. I sincerely doubt it. The love they share as a family come shining thru like a bright laser beam of light, cutting right thru to your heart, leaving an imprint that will not soon go away. Though you know how the story ends, you still want to read thru it, even if only an entry at a time. I couldn't count the number of times I would read a little bit, and then sneak peaks at the beautiful girl on the back cover. I tear up now just thinking about it. I, for one, am glad that I bought this book. It's very powerful lesson and sometimes we need that slap in the face to tell us to stop and smell the roses. Take a moment...reflect on Elena...than go out and better you're life. There's a world of possibilities and little Elena is at the door showing you the way.』
(A difficult read but worth it!) 『This was the most difficult book I ever read. I had to put the book down a few times so I could wipe away my tears and blow my nose. To read about a child suffering like that was heartbreaking. I gave the reviewer a piece of my mind that scored the book low because it wasn't "spiritual" enough. God doesn't fit into this. I hate when people blame diseases on God. There's so much cancer now because of the food we eat and the chemicals in all our land, water and air. Its humans that's causing our kids to be born defective not God. Just my opinion. This disease is a genetic disorder of some sort that affects only about 250 kids a year. Considering the population that's very low that's why there's no cure. Enough people have to care to find a cure. I pray for all the families afflicted with this disease and I cried for Elena. RIP.』
(Every Parents' Nightmare) 『Notes Left Behind is the story of six-year-old Elena Desserich's cancerous brain tumor and her family's struggle to understand, treat and ultimately accept her terminal diagnosis. The book is written in a day-by-day journal form, mostly by Elena's father although there are occasional entries from her mother. The journal was intended for Elena's younger sister Grace to read when she is older. But Elena also left behind her own messages to her parents and Grace in the form of drawings filled with messages of love. Elena and her family's story is heartbreaking. This is an extremely touching book that makes us realize what a blessing our ordinary, untroubled days truly are.』
(Notes may not be what you think...) 『I had a preconceived idea in my head that NOTES LEFT BEHIND was going to be a tear-jerker story about a young girl's fight with cancer. Instead, what I found was a touching, honest journal written by two parents whose lives and hearts were devoted to their two daughters, one of whom fought a valiant fight against a brain tumor. This is a record of their lives during that struggle, but it a record of strength, love and legacy. There's rarely a "poor me" moment in the book, but rather the journal looks at the gift of life, the precious moments shared, and the strengths they found that perhaps they didn't know they had.
This book does not just tell you of the Desserich family story, but contains lessons to all parents and grandparents on how precious our children are and how quickly they can be taken away. 』 『
Elena Desserich dreamed of becoming a teacher. Although her time on this earth was far too short to fulfill her dream, she left behind an enlightening lesson plan on life. Wise beyond her years, Elena never stopped teaching those around her to appreciate the miracle of everyday living even as the innocent six-year-old battled a rare form of brain cancer.
Through personal and candid journal entries written as a remembrance for Elena's younger sister, Brooke and Keith Desserich share their emotional journey as they negotiated their contradictory impulses to fight Elena's cancer at all costs and realized the inevitable outcome. Page by page, this journal is a reminder to parents everywhere to appreciate and savor every precious moment they have with their own children.
Notes Left Behindtells a story of humility and inspiration. From the time of her diagnosis, Elena accomplished a truly spectacular series of wishes, big and small, that she alone created, from riding in a horse-drawn carriage to painting a masterpiece that would hang in an art museum. Her life motivated the creation of the foundation, The Cure Starts Now, which today helps children everywhere in their fight against cancer. The authors’ proceeds from the sale of this book benefits this foundation.
Included in the pages of this book are Elena's private messages that she secretly hid around her home, knowing her family would find them when she was gone. These notes show us how even during the darker moments of life, it is possible to find hope and encouragement through selfless love.
