(Puerile writing, one-dimensional non-characters, bad dialogue.)
『This novel was surely written by a fourth grader, right? Written by a child for other children to read, correct? No? Good Lord, you mean Brandilyn Collins is an adult?

Folks, if someone offers to PAY YOU ten dollars to read this novel, wait for a better offer. It is simply terrible, and another example of the fact that today's literary agents are not reading manuscripts, but instead engaging in myriad deals unrelated to the talent (or lack thereof) of those they represent.

Literary agents: it is time for you to actually read those query letters and submissions you throw away and gain some much needed integrity. Represent someone who can actually write!

Books like Exposure should never have been able to be published.』

(Good Read)
『I've never read or herd of Brandilyn Collins. Exposure was entertaining and would not hesitate to buy another book by Brandillyn Collins.』

(Interesting Read)
『I was surprised to find that I rather liked this book. Surprised because I really hadn't heard of the author...though I don't know why. I got this book when it was a free Kindle "purchase". Now that I have discovered a new author, I'm sure I will buy more of her books. Thanks to the author/publisher for offering this book for free!』

(Good way to pass some time.)
『I enjoyed this book, but it was not my favorite of Brandilynn Collins. It was a little predictable, but still a good book. It would be a good way to pass a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.』

(Intriguing Mystery)
『Kept me wanting to find out what was going on. Really liked this book.』
『Someone is watching Kaycee Raye. But who will believe her? In Kaycee's newspaper column she's known for writing of her paranoia and fears. Is the new danger real---or is she going crazy? In this story of terror, twists, and desperate faith, the startling questions pile high. But Kaycee's descent to answers proves even more frightening.』

『i really appreciated how this novel developed the characters and really gave a great taste of the time period. phenominal book!』

(Pirate's Booty)
『This classic book should be a must read for anyone of any age. I read this book when I was a kid, all of 15 years ago, and got just as much enjoyment out of it now as I did then.』

(Glad I Finally Read It!)
『Summary

Treasure Island was Robert Louis Stevenson's first full-length, published novel, which began as a story for his stepson. The main character and the narrator is a boy named Jim Hawkins who lives and works in his parents' Admiral Benbow Inn. A drunken buccaneer has been living at the inn and causing quite a scene among the locals. After he receives a black spot (an item representing pirate judgment) from an old, blind pirate named Pew, the buccaneer dies, leaving behind an unpaid room and a seaman's chest. Jim and his mother open the chest and find a bag full of coins of all different nationalities and a document containing a map. They escape the inn just before a band of pirates begin to break in and search for the map, which leads to an island containing Captain Flint's buried treasure.

Jim takes the map to Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney, who then immediately embark on a voyage on the ship Hispaniola, hiring Captain Smollet and a crew recommended by Long John Silver. Silver and most of the crew he brings with him were part of Flint's voyage to Skeleton Island, unbeknownst to Livesey and Trelawney. At sea, Jim finds himself in a barrel of apples and accidentally overhears plans for mutiny from the pirates, which he soon relays to Livesey, Trelawney, and the Captain. Soon to land at the island, Jim Hawkins and the rest of the trustworthy crew plan a way to make it off the island with the treasure and their lives.

My Reaction
Until I read this book, I did not realize how much I already knew about it simply from references in popular culture. International Talk Like a Pirate Day could very well have been originated from a group of readers fond of this classic tale of pirates, treasure, and island adventure. In fact, I found just about everything I think about when I imagine pirates in this book. (The only thing Stevenson left out was a few hundred uses of the now ubiquitous pirate word "Arr!" but that may be anachronistic.) This alone I think demonstrates the far-reaching influence of this book as it applies to the popular view of pirate caricatures.

Normally when one thinks of reading "classic literature" one expects a laborious trek through hundreds of pages of archaic phrases and unfamiliar circumstances. Treasure Island is a refreshing reminder of why there are "classics" and has encouraged me to seek out others to read. Despite being over one hundred years old, it is easy to immerse oneself in Jim Hawkins' place throughout the action.

It took me a few pages to get used to some of the nautical terminology and Stevenson's use of apostrophes and phonetic spelling to illustrate the way the pirates were talking. However once I figured out what he was doing, the characters' voices in my head were clear. The action and suspenseful moments kept me turning the pages. I even jumped a bit in the part when Jim accidentally ended up with the pirates in the middle of the night. Descriptions easily laid out the setting of Skeleton Island. In fact, some of the more bloody scenes were surprisingly descript considering this was a tale aimed at young boys, but nowadays the target audience has seen more than that in a single video game.

I was also impressed with the character development within the novel. This was truly a coming-of-age type of tale for Jim Hawkins, learning nobility and honor practically as he fought to keep his and his party's lives and dignity. Long John Silver was mostly the star throughout because of his interesting mannerisms ("and you can lay to that") and his manipulative character. Just when I thought I figured out Silver's motivation, he pulled out another trick. The rest of the characters were distinct and multi-dimensional, with only one or two archetypes (Pew being one of evil villain, though he doesn't last long in the book).

Overall, as many other reviewers have said, Stevenson did not waste any words in writing Treasure Island. Everything written had purpose and added to the story. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a fun exciting page-turner, as well as to anyone wanting to get started reading the classics.』

(Fantastic novel)
『Treasure Island is the best pirate novel I've ever come across. Although I must also add this is the only pirate novel I've come across. That being my background, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it really is a wonderful story. Some of the technical jargon gets confusing, but with the dictionary function on the Kindle it is absolutely a breeze.』

(enjoyable and timeless but ultimately overhyped.)
『It my opinion that RLS excels in the short story/novella genres, and is somewhat lacking in momentum in longer stories and novels.』
『When former pirate Billy Bones leaves an old sea chest and an ancient treasure map at the Admiral Benbow Inn, young Jim Hawkins embarks on a treasure-hunting adventure that takes him to the South Seas.』
『Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime.Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic.--Naomi Gesinger

(great book / lousy ebook)
『downloaded the book and immediately started to suffer from kindle freeze. it completely locked up my kindle. took a lot of effort to get back in but as soon as i deleted the book kindle performance was back to normal. other reviews dont metion this problem so im mystified.

(Free kindle version is solid)
『While the story does drag from time to time, as you read paragraphs about the genus species etc of the plans and animals that the protagonist sees, this is still a totally awesome vivid romp. It feels right at home with its great-grand-children novels in the steam-punk genre. The free kindle version is GREAT because you can look up all the random mollusks and make sure that they are ... random mollusks and nothing more sinister. The conversion to kindle has nearly no problems. The only thing that is missing is the lb symbol (or $) for some of the discussions on the value of random things.

If you have a kindle grab it.』

(Revisiting my youth)
『Like most of us, I read '20,000 Leagues' as a young man. Reading it again refreshed not only my memory of the book, but also revived my memory of adventure, challenge, excitement, and the wonder and possibilities of the unknown. Verne hit the mark with just the right blend of science and mystery. Kept me as enthralled the second time around as it did those many years ago when as a young man I couldn't put it down.』

(Clever TV Tie-in)
『Ah, the television world! HEAT WAVE is a play within a play within a play on words and you know what? It works. Pseudo author Richard Castle is based on the ABC show's lead character, Castle. The television series is the tale of the smart alecky mystery novelist who, thanks to his writing fame and connections, gets to tag around with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett solving murders every Monday evening.
The book HEAT WAVE is the fictional one he wrote doing so. It features the fictional Kate Beckett's fictional recreation, Nikki Heat. It's also the real life book on your bookstore's bookshelf and Amazon's digital shelf. It's art imitating life imitating art and lite lit.
Confusing? At times, but all in all, it is a clever marketing ploy for a clever television program that works thanks in large part to Canadian born actor Nathan Fillion (FIREFLY series) and the series cast that bring Castle to rollicking life.
Surprisingly, the book holds its own against many of the mysteries on the market. Some question whether it could hold its own without the TV series but that's a moot point because the Richard Castle character now has a few lives of his own- on the small screen and in print and you know what, we seem to be buying both.
It's light reading but measured against much of what else is out there you'll at least chuckle and grin a few times and maybe that's not a bad deal for the times or the cover price.
Enjoy!

(Richard Castle / Heat Wave)
『I watch the series on TV every Monday Nite, but when I found that Amazon.Com had the mentioned book...well this was even better. The price was right, the review and information was right to the top and to tell the truth I hope Amazon has pre-ordering for the next book which is due out in Sept. 2010. I have passed the word about to others at work and they have also seek their copies on Amazon.Com. At first it was No Way...I said go check it out...Great Job! Keep the excietment going. A very Pleased customer, and Highly recommend this book to anyone who Loves a Very Good and Suspenful Book until the last page. D.Taylor』

(A Warm Ripple)
『I was really looking forward to reading `Heat Wave' but when I finished I wasn't that impressed but on the other hand, I wasn't very disappointed either.

The story was okay, no new element, no oh-wow moment, no unexpected twists or turns. The characters were lacking. They weren't bad but that little spark that would have made them great characters was missing.

The story followed to a logical ending and any person who has read their share of mysteries will figure it out.

The TV series works because of the characters, the way they interact. However, the book is not the actors, directors or other the people behind the scenes that make all the difference.

Just remember, don't expect a replay of the series, if you do, you'll be disappointed. Judge the book on it's on merits not as a TV series.

Would I recommend the book? Probably but then I don't expect everyone to have the same likes or dislikes as mine.』

『My husband&I are big Castle fans.....I read the book within 2 days (would have read it within 1 if I didn't have to go to work). Hope to see more books come out soon!』

(A Base Hit)
『Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of Michael Connelly. His Harry Bosch novels are at the pinnacle of crime fiction. His novels that do not feature Harry, like Scarecrow, have been a bit more variable - some pretty good, others not so much. Scarecrow starts off interesting enough, although Connelly's frequent mentions of his other books and characters within this novel is tiresome. It seems so much like a ploy - like an annoying pop up ad on a web page. Connelly captures the mood of the decline of newspapers and downsizing of journalist ranks well. It's a sad tale and that comes across in this book. But the central mystery of this book is not very interesting. It feels forced and implausible at times. The climax points of the story are weak. The ending feels unsatisfying in a vague way. I will definitely continue to read Connelly's novels - no author can hit a home run every time, and Connelly has knocked many of them out of the park. Scarecrow qualifies as only a moderate base hit.』

(Criminals in the Modern Era)
『Michael Connelly must have a very creative mind as he came up with a new twist on how criminals develop their intended victims. The book is written in a rather unique way and the characters are developed nicely. Carver, the bad guy, was a pretty sharp criminal type, working in a place where it was nearly impossible for him to be caught. I was glad that the hero, Jack Mc Evoy finally told his employer to "take a hike" and strike out on his own. Their will be a follow up book on "good ol Jack", I am sure. His investigative abilities will no doubt lead him to look for other bad guys; so stay tuned to Mr. Connelly for more action.』

(One of the great ones)
『I wanted to spend my vacation time around the Christmas Holiday with a book I didn't want to put down... I found this book to be THE BOOK. I loved it. It had been a while since I had read Michael Connelly and I'm hooked once again. I loved it from the beginning. It had the twist early on and the suspense was perfect. What talent!』

(Exactly what I want in a thriller)
『I bought The Scarecrow one miserable Thursday afternoon as a purely escapist read. Something to take the mind off the nonsense the world at large was creating. And it worked, as I hoped it would. The pages flew by and nothing else mattered - phones rang, people yelled and the dishes didn't get done... Too bad it had to come to an end.

Connelly is a solid writer who spins a great tale of imperfect good and purely evil evil. The plot is tight, the dialogue a joy to read, and the narration allows for identification with Jack McEvoy while watching the villain from up close and personal.

Great fun.

(better than most, better than most)
『I've read all of Michael Connnelly's novels and enjoyed them all, some more than others. The Scarecrow has an interesting backdrop with villains who are expert computer hackers along with being serial sex crime murderers. Two recurring Connelly characters Jack McEvoy the reporter for The L.A. Times and his old flame FBI agent Rachel Walling (from Connelly's book "The Poet") hook-up again and try to get to the bottom of the crimes. For me, Jack McEvoy is not as endearing a protagonist as other Connelly characters (he's a tad bit snarky here). I found I was kind of hoping he'd get "done-in" or hurt really bad towards the end, and I had trouble believing him chasing villains (being just a newspaper reporter) and behaving so heroic. That being said, I still enjoyed the book as a whole and would recommend it. Not Connelly's best in my opinion, but way better than the other crime-drama fiction that's out there.』

Michael Connelly and Janet Evanovich: Author One-to-One
In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors Michael Connelly and Janet Evanovich and asked them to interview each other. Find out what two of the top authors of their genres have to say about their characters, writing process, and more. Janet Evanovich is the bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum novels, includingFinger Lickin' Fifteen, twelve romance novels, the Alexandra Barnaby novels, andHow I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author. Read on to see Janet Evanovich's questions for Michael Connelly, or turn the tables to see what Connelly asked Evanovich.

Janet EvanovichEvanovich: So dude,... Okay, you're back in Florida. Do you ever get to the beach? And when and if you get to the beach...is Harry Bosch with you? And what kind of beachwear are you guys sporting? Flip-flops? Crocs? Speedo? Board shorts?

Connelly: I go to the beach often on weekends. Board shorts are required and I wear flip-flops with the built in bottle opener. Comes in handy. In Florida we rarely have waves, unless there is a hurricane in the Gulf. So I have taken up paddle-boarding, which essentially involves a big surfboard that you stand on and paddle. Still a balancing act, but easier than surfing, and you don't need waves.

Evanovich: What will a bookstore look like in 2020? Will we all be downloading?

Connelly: Good question. Since it is only eleven years from now, I think there will still be a solid population of "old school" readers who need the book in their hands. The question is, will they get it at a bookstore or will we have a Kindle 9.0 device that manufactures a book for you at home, complete with photo of author in a bomber jacket.

Evanovich: If everybody is downloading in 2020 what the heck will we be signing on book tour? Body parts? Kindle cases?

Connelly: I signed two Kindles yesterday. One person asked me to leave room for signatures from you and Dennis Lehane. So next time you're in Seattle she'll be in your line.

Evanovich: Do you eat when you write? Beer nuts? M&Ms? Just coffee? What keeps you from falling out of the chair in a narcoleptic stupor?

Connelly: Have you ever seen what eating Cheetos can do to a keyboard? I have to say I am addicted to Coke. I always have a glass of it nearby. I eat a lot of candy, too. Keeps me going. Smarties are a great writing tool. I often need to raid my daughter's stash and then there is trouble on the home front.

Evanovich: Are you a messy guy or a neat guy? Do you keep clutter on your desk? In your head? Are there soda cans and crumpled fast food wrappers rolling around on the floor of your car?

Connelly: I keep a clean car but a desk that gets progressively messier as I write a book. When I am finished with the book, I clean up the desk—and eat all the stray Smarties found under the paperwork. The clean desk then promotes the start of the next book.

Evanovich: The new book,The Scarecrowsounds terrific, and I know it's followed by Harry Bosch inNine Dragonsin the fall. Does your publisher prefer one series over another? And do you find one series to be more commercially viable than another?

Connelly: They let me do what I want. I like writing about Harry Bosch and he's pretty popular, but usually when I write a standalone it widens the audience a bit.

Evanovich: Want to meet me in a bar in Ft. Myers? Is that halfway?

Connelly: Name the place.

『Great Verb book. Easy to use and has lots of helps in it. Highly recommend this book for anyone taking Spanish!!!』

(501 Spanish Verbs)
『Excellant book. I tell my friends trying to learn Spanish that if they can only afford one book that 501 Spanish Verbs is the one to buy.
Pat, Ensenada, Baja California』

(terrible!!!!!)
『This would be a teachers AID only.If you are a beginner do not purchase this product.』

(Content is great but not really searchable)
『I like 501 Spanish Verbs. It is very useful for looking up verb conjugations. Spend a little more and buy the paperback or hardcopy versions. The Kindle version is very portable but all the verbs are not searchable. There are links for the 55 most commonly used verbs in the table of contents but not for the rest. I think that the Kindle version would begreatly improved if links were added to the table of contents for all 501 verbs in the book.』

(Kindle Version Unusable)
『Having read so many great things about this book, I was very excited to get into it and really get working on verbs. I was also looking forward to being able to cart it around with all my other books via my Kindle.
Unfortunately, like so many other language books, this one is not ported well. In fact, I would have to say it's worse than many others, as the tables are put together in image files which are too small to read, even when expanded.
I'm still waiting for a publisher of this type of book to get serious about the Kindle and really translate their work over to a format that the reader can use.』

『With more than 1 million copies in print, the new, updated edition of this all-time best selling language book of Spanish verbs is now printed in two colors for increased ease of reference. The most important and most commonly used Spanish verbs are presented alphabetically in chart form, one verb per page, and conjugated in all persons and tenses, both active and passive. This thorough guide to the use of verbs features many additional references and tips, including a bilingual list of more than 1,250 additional Spanish verbs, helpful expressions and idioms for travelers, and verb drills and tests with answers explained at the back of the book.』

『Book was sent brand new and it was still cheaper than the used price of the my school's book store. Arrived in careful packaging and excellent condition--and promptly!』

(Te Associated Stylebook 2009)
『From a journalism standpoint, the AP Stylebook has everything you need. It's easy to read and navigate - the perfect edition for 2009.』

(Paper Better Than On-line)
『I am a copy editor and writer who uses the AP Stylebook all of the time, and while I usually think on-line books are better than paper, the AP on-line was making me nuts. The on-line version is very difficult to use - doesn't bring up entries for the most basic searches - and not very user-friendly. The updated paper version is way better. It has extensive information on the use of numbers, IT language, a must-have section on punctuation, independent and dependent clauses, serial commas, etc. It is quick and easy to use to find answers for such usages as continuously or continually, effect or affect. The punctuation section alone is worth the price, and the Stylebook has improved my copy editing immensely. I recommend using for editors who must use several different style guides. Create a spreadsheet with your most common style guides and uses (serial commas, punctuation questions, IT word spellings, capitalization rules, etc.) and pull the information from your AP Stylebook for quick reference. This spreadsheet will improve your copy editing time and keep you from confusing styles.』

(A Bit Off)
『The older versions seems to have a lot more rules and specific details. Although my professor seems to be fine with it, there are some backlashes to it. Maybe we're outdated with the assingments but overall, it's perfect for any news writing classes.』

(Useful Product)
『Arrived in beautiful new condition and is exactly what I wanted and expected for my writing class.』

The style of the Associated Press is the gold standard of news writing. WithThe AP Stylebookin hand, you can learn to write with the clarity and professionalism for which the Associated Press is famous. Fully revised and updated, this new edition contains more than 3,000 A to Z entries—including more than 200 new ones—detailing the AP’s rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation and word and numeral usage. New entries include anti-spyware, high-definition, iPhone, outsourcing, podcast, text messaging, social networking, snail mail, WMD and Wikipedia.

You’ll also find answers to such widespread questions as:

• How should bankruptcy and mergers and acquisitions be covered?
• When should the names of government bodies or businesses be spelled out and when should they be abbreviated?
• What are the general definitions of the major religious movements?
• Which companies do the big media conglomerates own?
• Who are all the members of the British Commonwealth?
• What constitutes “fair use”?
• How should box scores for baseball games be filed, and how should sports terms like minicamp and wild card be used
• What exactly does the Freedom of Information Act cover?

With invaluable additional sections on the unique guidelines for business and sports reporting and on how you can guard against libel and copyright infringement,The AP Stylebookis the one reference that all writers, editors and students cannot afford to be without.

『Whether you're a student struggling through Composition 101 or a professional writer on a quest for perfection,The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Lawis always ready to fill the role of trusted advisor to your creative genius. Revised and updated in 2000, this version contains a 40-page section on media law, guides for punctuation and bibliographies, and specialized glossaries for business and sports writing, all in addition to its 280-page generalized stylebook.

Within each section, entries are alphabetized, and searching for an answer is a fairly simple process. Tricky words--those that can be hyphenated (know-how) or not (jukebox), homonyms, nonstandard spellings (mo-ped)--are given their own short entries. Larger categories, such as religions, military titles, the Internet, and datelines, have multiple pages devoted to their explanations, but detail and clarity are brought nicely together in each listing. Many entries concern brand names and trademarks--never again will you question whetherpingpongorPing-Pongshould be used in the flier for your table-tennis tournament.

While a few sections of this book--the ones concerning media law, photo captions, filing the wire, and proofreading marks--will most likely be used by professional and student journalists and editors, the majority of this book is an excellent tool for anyone who ever has to write for the public. Whether it's a newsletter for your badminton league, a training manual for your employees, or a press release detailing your company's quarterly earnings, this stylebook will help you turn out well-written copy that gains the approval of every English teacher you've ever had.--Jill Lightner

(Top of my list)
『I recently had this book recommended to me and now feel compelled to pass on that recommendation. As a career-long professional writer, I have read dozens of how-to-write books. Now "Bird by Bird" goes on the top of my list. While pursuing an agent/publisher to snap up my first novel, I am in the throes of revising my second. "Bird by Bird" gave me the inspiration to add another layer to my tale. Because the book offers nugget upon nugget of great suggestions, I couldn't tell you from where exactly in the book the inspiration came. I only know the inspiration struck like thunder while reading the book. Beyond that, of all the books I've read, I don't know another that let me know the author as well as this one has. Her terrific sense of deprecating self humor is a joy to behold. I like this lady.』

(BEST WRITING PROCESS BOOK EVER!!)
『This book is a definite "must have" for any aspiring writer. It also makes a wonderful gift for that person in your life who struggles with the writing process.』

(Bird by Bird. Some instructions on Writing and Life)
『I was happy to spot this book on amazon.com as I dream to become a very, inecredibly famous writer one day. The title also intrigued me as the play on words "bird by bird" in the title was a great idea. However, the book itself dissapointed me. How an experienced writer, someone who teaches other how to write could use the word "writing" 5-6 times on half of the page? There is also an overwhelming feeling of ...depression and sadness almost on every page...

The author underlines it everywhere that writing is difficult and will bring nothing but unhappiness to the unwise person who will undertake such an dangerous and devastating task. It is a mixture of personal history (sad one) and some tips on writing.

Unfortunately not my type of book.

(BIRD BY BIRD A Writer's Best friend)
『I don't think there's anything to say about this one other than, if you're a writer, buy it, read it, and it will forever be your best friend - something you'll read again and again, finding gold nuggets of inspiration every single time. Anne Lamott doesn't hold anything back: She's honest about the ups and downs, the reality, and all that a writer must do to shape their experiences into material for writing. That, perhaps, is its treasure.』

(Excellent writing inspiration)
『Early in my dissertation process, my advisor had me read "Bird by Bird." I did not want to read it -- after all, it was not related to my dissertation research in the slightest. However, I did as my advisor instructed. Oh my gosh! This book was very inspiring to me -- it helped me to begin writing my dissertation. I learned to write, write, write...and then go back and discard all of the garbage. This book really helped me to get the writing process going.』
『A step-by-step guide to writing and managing the writer's life covers each portion of a written project, addresses such concerns as writer's block and getting published, and offers awareness and survival tips. Reprint. Tour.K. NYT.
『Think you've got a book inside of you? Anne Lamott isn't afraid to help you let it out. She'll help you find your passion and your voice, beginning from the first really crummy draft to the peculiar letdown of publication. Readers will be reminded of the energizing books of writer Natalie Goldberg and will be seduced by Lamott's witty take on the reality of a writer's life, which has little to do with literary parties and a lot to do with jealousy, writer's block and going for broke with each paragraph. Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading.』

(one of the best books EVER)
『I may be only 11, but I know a good book when I see one and this is one of them!』

(The Misadventures of the Runaways)
『"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is universally considered Mark Twain's masterpiece, surpassing "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". Yet Tom Sawyer's story continuously outsells Huck Finn's for the simple reason that "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is the more enjoyable read. That does not mean that "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" isn't enjoyable, but that perhaps Twain tried too hard to impress and outdo himself that he muddled his story with unnecessary tangents.

Everyone is familiar with the basic outline. Huckleberry Finn fakes his own death to run away from his abusive alcoholic father and finds Miss Watson's slave Jim has run away too. The two construct a raft and take off down the Mississippi River so that Jim can become free, an unheard of action for a white boy to take, even one as poor as Huck Finn. Along the way they face trials and high adventures, pair up with a couple of royal frauds, and find themselves in heaps of trouble when they impersonate the wrong people. Despite these setbacks, readers know that things are going to work out all right for the two main characters and that a happy ending will be had.

Yet Huck's story drags on too long, especially the ridiculous plans to rescue Jim in the last several chapters; it seems as if these could have been excised to strenghten the story. Twain's humor is evident and contagious, but his adherence to local color and various dialects is demanding and downright frustrating at times. While many have claimed that "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a racist book, because of one certain word, it is nothing of the sort, especially when its hero is championing for the rights of a poor, misunderstood slave. In fact, that storyline would have been rather revolutionary in Twain's time. While the prose and the language may be dated and sensational for our sensitive, politically correct time, it is a unique and faithful depiction of the time in which it was written.』

(Gift)
『I bought this book for my Son. School Reading assignment.
But really who didn't like Huck Finn』

(Should be on every school's reading list!)
『This is an unbelievably amazing book, an absolute must-read for children and adults alike. Through the years, this book has been misunderstood, misinterpreted, even maligned - hence banned from schools - an absolute travesty! In my humble opinion, there probably has not been a book written in history which encomposses as much of the complicated human condition as this one. I started reading this book at elementary school age and never stopped. One continues to absorb so many different things from it - as a child and as an adult - as if it is a different book every time you read it, and all these things are valuable in their own way. It is hard to relay the value of this book unless you read it, and it should be on every school reading list!

(The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)
『My teenage daughter was tasked by her english class teacher to write a book report on a book of her choosing,as long as the book was one of the classics. She asked for my help in finding a book, I suggested The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I checked E-Bay and found that the book was available in paperback for a very low price, and in less than two weeks, the book arrived.

My daughter read the entire book, which was a surprise to me because I don't remember her reading anything that was not a teen magazine, and wrote her book report. I'am glad to say that she thanked me and wanted me to know how much she enjoyed the book even though her teacher felt that she had help writing the report.I wonder where she got that idea.』

『'Cordially hated and dreaded by all the mothers of the town because he was idle, and lawless, vulgar, and bad - and because all their children admired him so', Huckleberry Finn, the fourteen-year-old son of the town drunkard, joins runaway slave Jim on an exciting journey down the mighty Mississippi River on a raft.』
『Mark Twain's classic novel,The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious.

Though some of the situations inHuckleberry Finnare funny in themselves (the cockeyed Shakespeare production in Chapter 21 leaps instantly to mind), this book's humor is found mostly in Huck's unique worldview and his way of expressing himself. Describing his brief sojourn with the Widow Douglas after she adopts him, Huck says: "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people." Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makesThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finna frequently funny book with a serious message.』

(Okay for a mature reader, great for the younger set.)
『I was expecting something great but was disappointed. After just finishing two other classics, Steinbeck's East of Eden and Lewis' Main Street, I thought I would continue in the classics mode. I am sure it was a great book in its time but if you are used to something like what I mentioned above, then it is not for you. If you are a young reader than I would highly recommend it. The stories are short and the language is not too difficult. The endings are somewhat predictable but maybe not for a younger reader.』

(A great introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes)
『I originally downloaded this collection of short stories in preparation for the Sherlock Holmes major motion picture that was coming out in 2009. As someone who had never read any of Sherlock Holmes' tales, this was a perfect introduction into the kind of stories Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned for the legendary Holmes and Dr. Watson.

The Kindle formatting could have used a little work; a currency sign that was apparently being used in the public domain version the Kindle version was "ported" from and instead of a currency sign being shown, miscellaneous characters were. But, all in all, a slight blip and nothing truly enjoyment-breaking.』

(A timeless hero)
『Spending so much of my day plugged into the internet, peering at my iPhone, staring at Excel spreadsheets, it has been an absolute pleasure reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes(on my Kindle, I must admit). I am reminded, in adventure after adventure, that there is no substitute for a sharp mind and astute observation. As I watch the master investigator calmly solve the most "singular" of mysteries through the eyes of Dr. James Watson, I almost want to myself be transported back to 19th century London.

If you haven't read any of Conan Doyle's stories, they are worth perusing. I only read a dozen of Holmes' adventures. But in those stories, I grew intimately close with both the detective and his trusty sidekick and doctor-cum-biographer, Watson. I came to admire Holmes' heroic stoicism, encyclopedic memory, and sharp wit.

Each of the adventures follows a somewhat similar plot structure. The adventure opens with a shot into Watson's or Holmes' personal life. You might hear briefly about Watson's life as a doctor, or get a glimpse of Holmes' tobacco, alcohol, or cocaine habits (yes, the rumors are true--Holmes does cocaine). At some point, Watson ends up at Holmes' pad on Baker Street. Both men are then found lounging, Holmes in his "dressing gown," both men likely smoking, drinking, and enjoying a fine meal, usually arms' length from a cozy fire.

Watson, the narrator, will then tell us how, in all of his time with Holmes, the case he is about to elucidate is the most "singular" one yet. Then one of them will see or hear someone approaching their home base; inevitably, the bell will ring and in will enter yet another all-but-hopeless client. We'll get a detailed description of the client's physical appearance, from the clothes on his or her back to the flushness of the face. We'll also always get an idea of what class the client falls into; most regularly, the clients are from higher classes. The client will give us a detailed account of his or her problems as Holmes and Watson listen intently. It is here that the reader is supposed to do the detective work to piece together clues to solve the case. Of course, most of what the client tells us seems unrelated and inane; Holmes will remind us that the simplest cases are the hardest ones, and the smallest of details often the most important.

In most cases, the client has a suspicion that the police's conclusions on the case were flawed. In almost every case, the police were consulted and ended up being wrong indeed. Holmes generally requires a trip to the crime scene, sometimes in costume, and the readers have the privilege to join him with Watson. But most trips are simply chances for Holmes to confirm what he already suspected. Guns may be drawn, extreme danger is almost always encountered, and Holmes emerges the hero. Holmes has a penchant for withholding his conclusions from us until the very end of the story, however, so as the reader follows Holmes' movements at the crime scenes, the reader must do some sleuthing as well.

Holmes will finally tell us what actually happened, and the seemingly innocuous clues from earlier in the chapter prove to be essential to the weaving of the truth. Holmes prefers to strike a deal with the crimes' perpetrators rather than offering them to the police. The clients offer to give Holmes unlimited reward for a job well done, and Holmes calmly requests only that which will defer the cost of his work. He gets enough pleasure out of a job professionally well-done.

Because of the similarities between stories, I recommend taking Holmes in limited doses. But his is a very powerful medicine, one that rejuvenates the mind and strengthens the character. As an example of someone who betters the world by doing what he loves, Sherlock Holmes is a timeless hero.』

(Timeless classic, priceless entertainment)
『I picked up the Sherlock Holmes Complete Collection because my mom had already downloaded it and I was mildly curious. Holmes was the best book I've read in a while, definately my favorite in the Mystery genre.

I love the characters. Doyle whips up such fantastically real people out of no where with the most outrageous situations and stories. The main characters are priceless. Holmes has a very deep compassion for humanity buried among his quirks and strange habits. Watson is such a genuine, sympathetic companion and narrator that it feels like a friend telling a story over coffee.

Let me put it this way, I'm bitterly upset that I finished the series. Bitterly. I wish with all my heart that I could just have a fresh Sherlock Holmes mystery every day. Definately a book I'll pick up again and recommend to everyone I know. My brother read them when he was a preteen/teenager, and I loved them at 24 y/o. I'm sure that a more mature audience would appreciate Holmes, also.』

(clasic sherlock)
『there is nothing like clasic sherlock holmes! the movie doesn't do it justice. I love this book! whoever said the cases were easy to solve must be a ton smarter than I am.』

In these twelve intriguing stories, Sherlock Homes and his trusty friend Dr. Watson solve crimes amid the sinister and foggy streets of Victorian London.

"Crime is common. Logic is rare. Therefore it is upon the logic rather than upon the crime that you should dwell." -- Sherlock Holmes inThe Adventure of the Copper Beeches
