I'm very glad to own this book in it's Kindle edition and for a very reasonable price too, $0.00! There is not anything that I could write that hasn't been written before about Mr. Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories are timeless, they are indeed short stories and may be read quickly in one sitting, and, for me, be read again and again. While reading these stories I can't help but see and hear Jeremy Brett, the ultimate and best Holmes of any visual media. Ever! The mannerisms of Holmes as written by Doyle, as well as much of the dialog, are transferred accurately and brilliantly to the small screen by Brett, the BBC, and PBS. I also recommend this series on DVD for any and all Holmes fans. And Jane Austen's grand opus is still beloved for a good reason. While it's rather stuffily written much of the time, it has a vibrant core of witty dialogue and strong characters that shine like lanterns in the night -- and the best part of it is the interplay between the two strong-willed main characters, whose initial dislike of one another blossoms into love once they learn how to overcome his pride and her prejudice. The Bennett family is in an uproar when wealthy Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, and Mrs. Bennett is especially happy when he takes a liking to the eldest Bennett daughter Jane -- since their estate is entailed and there is no Mr. Bennett Jr., a good marriage is considered essential for at least one of the girls. But her forthright, independent sister Lizzie immediately butts heads with wealthy, aloof Mr. Darcy, who scorns the rural village and seems haughty about everything. A flurry of proposals, road trips and friendships happen over the course of the following months, with Lizzie fending off her slimy cousin Mr. Collins, and befriending the flirty, hunky Wickham, who claims to have been wronged by Darcy. Lizzie believes Wickham's account -- and she's in for a shock when Darcy unexpectedly proposes, and reveals what Wickham won't tell her about both of their past lives, and what Wickham did to offend Darcy. And finally things take a scandalous turn when Lizzie's idiotic younger sister Lydia elopes with Wickham, while staying with a friend in Brighton. The family is plunged into disgrace, which also wrecks any chances of a halfway decent marriage for the other daughters. The only one who can set things right is Darcy, who will do whatever he must to make amends to Lizzie -- and unwittingly establish himself as the man she loves as well... Reading "Pride and Prejudice" is a bit like watching someone embroider a piece of cloth with subtle, intricate designs. Lots of balls, dances, visits and drawing room banter between Lizzie and virtually everyone else, and interwoven with some rather opinions from Jane Austen about haughty aristocrats, marriages of security, entailment, and the whole idea of what an ideal woman has (intellect and strength). The only real problem: Jane Austen writes very much in the style of her literary era -- it's rather formal and stuffy much of the time, and the narrative is kept distant from the characters. So, not for casual readers. But despite that formality, Austen's brilliance as a writer is evident -- she slowly unfolds the plot one act at a time, with several intricate subplots that tie together and play off each other. She also wrote some unbelievably sharp-edged dialogue with plenty of witty banter between Lizzie and Darcy ("I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine"). But Austen also weaves in startlingly romantic moments between them ("No one admitted to the privilege of hearing you, can think anything wanting"). It's hard to imagine a better fictional couple than Lizzie and Darcy, despite their rocky start (a major-league snub at a dance). Both are witty, smart, and a bit snotty in their own ways, with quick minds and even quicker tongues. Darcy is a selfish, rather haughty man man who gradually becomes warm and kind, while Lizzie is strong, independent, and Darcy's equal in every way. And neither will marry for anything but true love. It also has a solid supporting cast: the painfully practical Charlotte Lucas, slimy clerics, virtuous-looking rakes, sisters ranging from saintly to snobby, and the lovable Mr. Bingley and perpetually optimistic Jane. Lizzie's family also adds plenty of color to the story, including the screechy and hilariously mercurial Mrs. Bennett and the barb-tongued Mr. Bennett ("Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do"). Despite its mildly stuffy style, "Pride and Prejudice" is the ultimate Jane Austen novel -- a powerful and romantic story about two people who grow and change because of love. An absolute must-read.』 (Very disappointed in the recording) ![]() 『I purchased this recording (read by Lindsay Duncan) through the iTunes store (something I will not be doing again), on the understanding that it was an unabridged recording. This is one of my favorite books, and I know it well enough to realize when sentences are being left out, which happened in several places (I did double-check with my print edition). At least one of the omitted sentences was important for understanding the characters. The other quibble I have is that the recording I purchased consisted of two SIX HOUR tracks. Heaven help you if you lose your place while using an mp3 player. I cannot dis-recommend this recording enough.』 (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『It is beneficial at times to step away from our classics of literature from time to time, to take them down from their high pedestals and look at them without pretension. No novel, no matter how well-regarded, is universally esteemed - Twain, Emerson, and Charlotte Bronte all savaged Pride and Prejudice in print - so let us, for a few moments, stop treating it as holy writ and just look at it as a novel, at how it holds up to a modern casual reader. Pride and Prejudice (1813) is Jane Austen's novel of manners - it thoroughly explores the ins, outs and economics of nineteenth-century courtship. The novel's central character is Elizabeth Bennet, one of five daughters, whose family lives in a country village. Two wealthy, eligible bachelors move to town, and romance, confusion and animosity ensue. Austen populates her novel with all manner of flawed characters. Many of them are annoying - that is, they behave badly and are antagonistic toward the main characters - but they all show at least some depth. No one here is without flaw, but no one here is without virtue, either (except Mr. Collins, the most ludicrous of them all). And this is why the novel works: because Austen treats her characters and their social milieu gently, delicately (well, except Mr. Collins). If she had done otherwise, if she had been more cutting, she would have lost the sympathy in the reader that many of these characters engender. To the modern audience, Austen's plotting is rather sluggish, although it must be recalled that novels moved at a rather more leisurely pace then. At any rate it often seems that there is one too many side plots, or perhaps one too many visits to relatives, and there are patches that can be quite hard to get through. But you don't go to Austen for plot - you go to her for clever dialogue, for a delightful turn of phrase. That is what she thrives at, and that is what she is best remembered for. And in spite of the novel's overlength, Austen delivers a full and completely satisfying payoff. Rarely is a happy ending so fulfilling, and it may not be until the last few pages of the book that it becomes evident to the reader how masterfully Austen has set it up. And this is a large reason why the novel has such enduring appeal. Much of the nuance in Pride and Prejudice may be lost on casual modern readers. For example, the character of Mrs. Bennet is the object of great scorn from many readers, and this has only been exacerbated by the film adaptations of the novel. But while marrying for love is the norm today, then, it was not; Mrs. Bennet is the only one looking out for the Bennet family's financial future. Pride and Prejudice is, on the whole, a satisfactory and clever novel, and, at present, one whose merits are diminished mostly by readers too far removed to understand it in its fullness, or whose tastes have diverged too far.』 『Austen's best-known and best-loved novel is a brilliant tour de force of the economics of love in an 18th century English village. Her main concerns were those of universal fascination today--love and money. Spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of a family of five daughters. With no male heir, the Bennet estate will someday pass to their priggish cousin Collins. Therefore, the girls must marry well--and the arrogant bachelor Mr. Darcy is Elizabeth's elusive match. 4 cassettes.』 『In a remote Hertfordshire village, far off the good coach roads of George III's England, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet -- a country squire of no great means and his scatterbrained wife -- must marry off their five vivacious daughters. At the heart of this all-consuming enterprise are the headstrong second daughter Elizabeth and her aristocratic suitor Fitzwilliam Darcy, two lovers in whom pride and prejudice must be overcome before love can bring the novel to its magnificent conclusion.』 『 Pride&Prejudice (Ultimate Classics) > 『 Pride&Prejudice (Ultimate Classics) > 『 Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics) > 『 Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics) > 『 Emma (Penguin Classics) > 『 Emma (Penguin Classics) > 『 Sense And Sensibility > 『 Sense And Sensibility > 『 Jane Eyre (Dover Thrift Editions) > 『 Jane Eyre (Dover Thrift Editions) > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Olive Kitteridge > 『 Olive Kitteridge > 『 The Help > 『 The Help > 『 The Elegance of the Hedgehog > 『 The Elegance of the Hedgehog > 『 Abide with Me: A Novel > 『 Abide with Me: A Novel > 『 Amy and Isabelle: A novel > 『 Amy and Isabelle: A novel > 『 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Random House Reader's Circle) > Elizabeth Strout

The main character, Olive Kitteridge, is a tense, often-angry woman with no ability to self-censor her thoughts. While main characters need not be perfect, I never really got to like her, though she grows more sympathetic as she grows older. She lacks humor, making it even more puzzling that Strout would choose someone so basically unlikeable as the focus of these stories. Also, while all the stories supposedly have Olive as some sort of focal point, or give her relevance, two only mention her by name, and those stories seem not connected at all to the town of Crosby, Maine, where most of the action takes place. Finally, Olive's slams at former president GW Bush as a "moron" and as someone who looks "retarded" did nothing to further endear her to me, though it probably did some members of the Pulitzer committee. Her bona fides as someone sassy and opinionated were already well-documented; sticking in her political opinions seemed tacked on and irrelevant. What was the point? Three stars for Strout's excellent writing, though. [...]』 (Olive; An Everywoman.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I just loved this book. I can see why it won the Pulitzer. Strout so beautifully shows the many conditions of the human heart, including its pain and its joy. A collection of short stories, Olive Kitteridge is a large woman in more than one way--thought, word and physical being in her small Maine town of Crosby. While Olive usually makes at least a brief appearance in every story, many of the stories are about her specifically and her life. Some of the stories are sad, some funny, some heartbreaking all truthful. They are about life, death, aging and disappointment. Like Shakespeare, Elizabeth Strout seems to be able to encompass it all in this beautifully written, slim book. Excellent reading, and hard to put down. I loved it.』 『At the edge of the continent, Crosby, Maine, may seem like nowhere, but seen through this brilliant writer’s eyes, it’s in essence the whole world, and the lives that are lived there are filled with all of the grand human drama - desire, despair, jealousy, hope, and love. At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse. As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life– sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition - its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires. 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner in the Letters, Drama and Music category』 『 Olive Kitteridge > 『 Olive Kitteridge > 『 The Help > 『 The Help > 『 The Elegance of the Hedgehog > 『 The Elegance of the Hedgehog > 『 Abide with Me: A Novel > 『 Abide with Me: A Novel > 『 Amy and Isabelle: A novel > 『 Amy and Isabelle: A novel > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Three Cups of Tea [With Headphones] (Playaway Adult Nonfiction) > 『 Three Cups of Tea [With Headphones] (Playaway Adult Nonfiction) > 『 Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World... The story itself is vibrant and full of stumbling stones and shows how Mr Mortenson manages to go around all of them during a 3 year span and builds the school. He becomes so engaged by the first promise that ever since this has become his mission in life. This story makes the book already worth reading. Mortenson is a rela hero not only succeding but also going endless strain to achieve it. Additionally it gives a very good insight in the lives and costumes of people in those remote areas of the world and shows their necessities as persons(decent schools, health systems, potable water). The most interesting aspect probably is how the book breaks with many of the prejudices we might have on Muslims and the way they relate to other people. Greg Mortenson with respect and interest manages to get the support of religious leaders in the area that support his endeavours by educating children to improve the live of these impoverished areas. All this takes makes a very interesting turn when the war on Afghanistan starts after 9/11 and Mortenson experiences how locals see the West with suspicion but keep supporting his initiative. Mortenson results showing that schools, especially for girls, will improve the life of the region breaking a circle of ignorance in the Karakoram; his actions and attitude are more enriching than the vast majority of motivation books. The narration with many interviews and quotations of the main characters is lively, direct and touching keeping you tight to the book. The fact that the first thing that Mortenson does when he meets coauthor David Relin is handing out a list of dozens of people that he characterizes as his enemies underlines the credibility to this man and the story. 』 (Inspiring) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book tells a remarkable true story of one man's effort to accomplish something good in an area of the world where there is so much suffering from so many heart-breaking problems. Winner, 1964 Caldecott Medal 『Where the Wild Things Areis one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder. The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination. However, this is a book that I purposely read slowly, one chapter at a time, because I would find myself thinking about the case studies and the principles that Gladwell used. We all know them--that chapter will make you think about your sister, your best friend, or your neighbor with a better understanding. I would highly recommend this book. Somehow I'd missed "The Tipping Point" until recently, when at the recommendation of a friend I listened to it on audiobook. This is a fascinating book about how trends happen. Malcolm Gladwell has an easily accessible way of communicating social science and group psychology by using compelling, relevant examples that make the reader want to know more. Really interesting examination of "tipping" that occurs sometimes with intent and others, simply resulting from a sequence of events. - Review from the award-winning author of Your Present: A Half-Hour of Peace: A Guided Imagery Meditation for Physical&Spiritual Wellness』 (Eye-Opening, Interesting, Revealing, and Fun) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『Simply put, Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point" is a fantastic book. Widely heralded as a rare and "game changing" book, what Gladwell elegantly offers readers is an interesting set of stories that serve as allegories to a set of powerful, and eye-opening, ideas. These ideas, conveyed regularly, succinctly, and consistently well by Gladwell, provide a frame of reference on the world writ large that serve to answer the question, "how can little things make such a big difference?" One of the powerful aspects of "The Tipping Point" is the voice of the author -- never proselytizing, Gladwell serves up the facts and the context for the review of the reader, and then builds a logical case as to why he believes what he does. I find Gladwell's logical voice to parallel that of Michael Pollen, especially Pollen's rhetorical approach used throughout The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals This is a smart, entertaining, revealing, and just plain fun book. This book is quite okay. 50% of what I read are somewhat interesting but nothing in the book so far gave me a WOW. 』 『Author looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly. An intellectual adventure story and a road map to change, with a profoundly hopeful message-that one imaginative person applying a well-placed lever can move the world. Two cassettes read by Malcolm Gladwell.』 『"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell'sThe Tipping Pointhas quite a few interesting twists on the subject. For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive information about the British. He knew what was going on and he knew exactly whom to tell. The phenomenon continues to this day--think of how often you've received information in an e-mail message that had been forwarded at least half a dozen times before reaching you. Gladwell develops these and other concepts (such as the "stickiness" of ideas or the effect of population size on information dispersal) through simple, clear explanations and entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the pedagogical methods ofSesame StreetandBlue's Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. Although some readers may find the transitional passages between chapters hold their hands a little too tightly, and Gladwell's closing invocation of the possibilities of social engineering sketchy, even chilling,The Tipping Pointis one of the most effective books on science for a general audience in ages. I'm still going to give him the benefit of a doubt and say that he might be a good writer for adults, but this little trip into Young Adult fiction was a mistake. He can't write from the perspective of a 14 year-old girl. This was painfully obvious from the start. The whole time I had the feeling that he was writing down to the audience. It has the distinct vibe of "This is what the young people are saying these days, right?" The main character is what I'm guessing is supposed to be a strong female role model. She's annoyingly flawless. Seriously, no flaws, except maybe her uncontrollable urge to save people. She never had any real fear, doubt, insecurities. She never thinks about herself. She just beats up monsters and goes on and on about how much she loves her adopted siblings, whom she selflessly raises with no help. I consider myself a pretty empathetic reader, but I couldn't care about any of these characters. Flat. Predictable. Horribly named. I've heard the plot praised for being fast-paced, but it was choppy and unbelievably. Conflicts popped out of nowhere and then disappeared with the help of luck and random, previously undiscovered super powers. I like a good sci-fi or fantasy read. I'm pretty good at believing the unbelievable, but I couldn't get lost in this story. >price: Oasis Audio Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Corporate Copyrighting of the Great Western Tradition) ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The Oz Principle chronicles the journey from victimization to accountability, a journey which is desperately needed in the work world today. For this I applaud the authors in their successful endeavors to raise this issue and bring it to light. Self-awareness is the truest path to overcoming. I have been in management for 38 years, and I have seen the victim mentality in others as well as in myself. This slavish mentality is crippling and needs to be transcended. However, I also have a BA in philosophy, which I received at the young age of 21, and I have continued to study it. The journey of which The Oz Principle speaks is nothing new. This journey inspired and was undertaken by most philosophical, religious, and historical traditions of the West, starting with Abraham when he heard his name called. The road from victimization to emancipation, whether traveled by Moses on the exodus to the Promised Land or by Martin Luther King Jr. on the marches to civil rights, has been one manifestation of this mythical and primordial task. The road from victimization at the hands of the British Crown to political freedom, as witnessed in the writings of Thomas Payne, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, is another. The list goes on: From the victimization of mere opinion to the freedom of knowledge as described by the Allegory of the Cave in Plato's Republic. From victimization to salvation as found in the Epistles of Saint Paul. From being trapped and ruled by hidden memories and fears inside the unconscious to the bright, open expanse of self-awareness uncovered by psychoanalysis, initially heralded by Sigmund Freud. The journey becomes even more crystalized in Aristotle's portrayal of the Magnanimous Man and in Nietzsche's Overman. The Oz Principle cannot hold a candle to these great historical and literary movements. The best summary of this hero's journey, for it is a hero who makes the leap out of victimization, is Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces." Campbell breaks down the leap from victimization to authenticity into several stages. Among them are the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, the crossing of the first threshold, the belly of the whale, the road of trials, the ultimate boon, the refusal of the return, the crossing of the return threshold, and the freedom to live. The greatest difference, however, between The Oz Principle and these other lives and works is that none of these others attempted to copyright this universal experience. I don't recall Martin Luther King Jr. ever trying to copyright the expression "We shall overcome," or "I have a dream today." Yet The Oz Principle is embarrassingly filled with short italicized phrases with a copyright "c" after them. Examples are Steps to Accountability, Below the Line, Above the Line, See It, Own It, Solve It, Do It. It's a good thing they didn't put the word "just" in front of "do it," or Nike might be suing them. Socrates, the greatest thinker of the West and a self proclaimed philosopher, spent inordinate time differentiating himself from the sophists, who were speakers and writers who sold their knowledge for money. The sophists claimed to have the secret to life for a fee. Socrates never took any money, but he liberated many more people, and not just in his own time either. He knew that this universal human journey did not belong to just one man. He never passed the basket around after his sermons. Returning from my philosophical journey and re-opening my eyes within the shadows of my managerial career, I fully recognize that I live in the 21st Century where capitalism rules, and rules rightfully so. Corporations create efficiencies, and six and a half billion people could not live without those efficiencies. The authors of The Oz Principle have a right to earn a living. So I recommend that you buy the book, if you are in management. In fact, I recommend it even if you are a union worker who believes himself victimized by corporations. I also recommend you attend the authors' seminars. Just remember that their road is only a small part of the human journey, a human journey that shall one day transcend and overcome the 21st Century. If the human journey is an ocean, The Oz Principle rations it with an eye drop. In his famous play, Shakespeare, through his character Hamlet, asks "whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" (victimization) "or to take arms against a sea of trouble and by opposing end them" (taking control of one's own life). Yet "Hamlet" is a tragedy, which shows what is really at stake in this human journey. Certainly Martin Luther King Jr. did not have a happy ending to his personal life, although his crusade continues to inspire generations. Socrates was put to death by the Athenian democracy who tired of his calling citizens to task and to responsibility. Acknowledging and consenting to one's own death is a necessary part of the hero's journey. This acknowledging and consenting is not possible for a corporation, because it is not flesh and blood. Of all the examples that exist in the history of the West, the authors of this book choose "The Wizard of Oz," a children's fantasy with a happy ending. Choosing fantasy over tragedy is not just a sign of this book. Perhaps it is a sign of our times, and points to our inability to overcome the 21st Century. With its copyrighting and its seminars, the Oz Principle exemplifies the wizard, a sophist in his own right, more than it teaches us about Dorothy or any of her friends. The wizard plays a part but ultimately is a comical figure, trying to just hold on and find a place for himself, much like the rest of us. He refuses to confront his own death, and he refuses to deal with the scariest danger confronting his age and his dominion. He leaves it to those who take a deeper ownership of their lives, an ownership that is not possible through copyrighting.』 (Thoroughly enjoyed and found numerous items to employ...) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『As the VP of operations for a small software development company, I found the information in this book very useful. The concept of staying "above the line" was especially useful and helped us be much more creative in terms of actual solutions to problems that would otherwise have a more significant impact. Also, the concept of silos couldn't be more critical for us as well because of the constant mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships that are constantly being developed in the software industry.
