FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS.Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious driverevolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted. Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values. Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2011: It is difficult to read the opening pages of Walter Isaacson’sSteve Jobswithout feeling melancholic. Jobs retired at the end of August and died about six weeks later. Now, just weeks after his death, you can open the book that bears his name and read about his youth, his promise, and his relentless press to succeed. But the initial sadness in starting the book is soon replaced by something else, which is the intensity of the read--mirroring the intensity of Jobs’s focus and vision for his products. Few in history have transformed their time like Steve Jobs, and one could argue that he stands with the Fords, Edisons, and Gutenbergs of the world. This is a timely and complete portrait that pulls no punches and gives insight into a man whose contradictionswere in many ways his greatest strength.--Chris Schluep
Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Walter Isaacson
Q:It's becoming well known that Jobs was able to create his Reality Distortion Field when it served him. Was it difficult for you to cut through the RDF and get beneath the narrative that he created? How did you do it? Isaacson:Andy Hertzfeld, who worked with Steve on the original Macintosh team, said that even if you were aware of his Reality Distortion Field, you still got caught up in it. But that is why Steve was so successful: He willfully bent reality so that you became convinced you could do the impossible, so you did. I never felt he was intentionally misleading me, but I did try to check every story. I did more than a hundred interviews. And he urged me not just to hear his version, but to interview as many people as possible. It was one of his many odd contradictions: He could distort reality, yet he was also brutally honest most of the time. He impressed upon me the value of honesty, rather than trying to whitewash things. Q:How were the interviews with Jobs conducted? Did you ask lots of questions, or did he just talk? Isaacson:I asked very few questions. We would take long walks or drives, or sit in his garden, and I would raise a topic and let him expound on it. Even during the more formal sessions in his living room, I would just sit quietly and listen. He loved to tell stories, and he would get very emotional, especially when talking about people in his life whom he admired or disdained. Q:He was a powerful man who could hold a grudge. Was it easy to get others to talk about Jobs willingly? Were they afraid to talk? Isaacson:Everyone was eager to talk about Steve. They all had stories to tell, and they loved to tell them. Even those who told me about his rough manner put it in the context of how inspiring he could be. Q:Jobs embraced the counterculture and Buddhism. Yet he was a billionaire businessman with his own jet. In what way did Jobs' contradictions contribute to his success? Isaacson:Steve was filled with contradictions. He was a counterculture rebel who became a billionaire. He eschewed material objects yet made objects of desire. He talked, at times, about how he wrestled with these contradictions. His counterculture background combined with his love of electronics and business was key to the products he created. They combined artistry and technology. Q:Jobs could be notoriously difficult. Did you wind up liking him in the end? Isaacson:Yes, I liked him and was inspired by him. But I knew he could be unkind and rough. These things can go together. When my book first came out, some people skimmed it quickly and cherry-picked the examples of his being rude to people. But that was only half the story. Fortunately, as people read the whole book, they saw the theme of the narrative: He could be petulant and rough, but this was driven by his passion and pursuit of perfection. He liked people to stand up to him, and he said that brutal honesty was required to be part of his team. And the teams he built became extremely loyal and inspired. Q:Do you believe he was a genius? Isaacson:He was a genius at connecting art to technology, of making leaps based on intuition and imagination. He knew how to make emotional connections with those around him and with his customers. Q:Did he have regrets? Isaacson:He had some regrets, which he expressed in his interviews. For example, he said that he did not handle well the pregnancy of his first girlfriend. But he was deeply satisfied by the creativity he ingrained at Apple and the loyalty of both his close colleagues and his family. Q:What do you think is his legacy? Isaacson:His legacy is transforming seven industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, digital publishing, and retail stores. His legacy is creating what became the most valuable company on earth, one that stood at the intersection of the humanities and technology, and is the company most likely still to be doing that a generation from now. His legacy, as he said in his "Think Different" ad, was reminding us that the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. From the Author: 5 Things I Love About the Kindle Fire
 | | Author Nancy Muir | From its stunning color touch-screen to its beautifully simple and easy interface, the Kindle Fire is one of the hottest new tablets to hit the market. The Kindle Fire may be pint-sized, but it's a total powerhouse packed with features including web browsing, games, apps, videos, magazines, newspapers, music, e-books, cloud storage, e-mail, and more. Learn all about the cool things your Kindle Fire can do with help from longtime For Dummies author Nancy C. Muir and these five Fire features that are sure to fuel your love of tablets and technology.
1. Content, Content, Content! Kindle Fire is intended to be a device you use to consume media, meaning that you can play/read all kinds of music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, e-books, magazines, and newspapers. Amazon has built up a huge amount of content, from print and audio books (1,000,000 titles and counting in the Kindle Store) to movies and TV shows (100,000), music (17 million songs), and hundreds of your favorite magazines. Count on these numbers to have risen by the time you read this! Amazon continues to rack up deals with media groups such as Fox Broadcasting and PBS on a regular basis to make even more content available.
You can also find various kinds of content in the Amazon store using the Store button in Video and Music libraries that you access through the Kindle Fire Home screen. Tap Newsstand to shop for periodicals; Music to shop for songs and albums; tap Video to go directly to the Amazon Video store; and tap Apps to shop the Amazon Appstore for Android. All the content you purchase is backed up on the Amazon Cloud. The ability to quickly and easily access all this content and play it back or display it on your Kindle Fire is probably the main reason why this great little device could give iPad a run for its money.
2. Free Cloud Storage Although Kindle Fire has less storage space (8 GB) than some competing tablets, that amount of storage will probably work just fine for you. That’s because when you own a Kindle Fire you get free, unlimited cloud storage for all digital content purchased from Amazon (but not content that you copy onto Kindle Fire from your computer). This means that books, movies, music, and apps are held online for you to stream or download at any time, rather than being stored on your Kindle Fire. This storage means that you don’t use up your Kindle Fire memory. As long as you have a Wi-Fi connection you can stream content from Amazon’s Cloud at any time.
Tip:If you’ll be away from a Wi-Fi connection for a bit, you can download content like a TV show or movie to your Kindle Fire to watch while you’re without wireless access. When you’re done watching and back within range of a Wi-Fi network, you can remove the content to free up space on your device. Thecontent is still available in the cloud and can be downloaded or streamed again anytime you like.
3. The Size Sporting a 7-inch display and weighing only 14.6 ounces, Kindle Fire is lighter and smaller than the iPad and other popular tablets on the market. That smaller, lighter form factor makes the Fire easier to hold with one hand. In addition, Kindle Fire is that much easier to slip into a tote bag or laptop case. You don’t really need to prop it up with a fancy stand because you can easily hold it with one hand and tap the screen to get things done with the other.
The Price Kindle Fire costs much less than the lowest priced iPad: $199 versus $499. At the top end, you’ll pay $829 for a 64 GB, 3G iPad. Granted Kindle Fire doesn’t offer a 3G option, and has no camera, and though it’s inexpensive, it’s a very well made device that offers just about all the functionality of the competition in the booming tablet market. How does Amazon offer a quality deviceat this low price? Quite simply they're making a bet that they’ll make up for what they lose on the cost of the hardware with content sales. And with all the content available, you, the consumer, are the big winner in the end!
5. Amazon Prime Finally, Kindle Fire comes with one free month of Amazon Prime. Now I’ve been an Amazon Prime member for years so I can tell you firsthand that this service is one of the best deals out there. During your free month, Prime will allow you to get lots of perks such as free two-day shipping on thousands of items sold through Amazon.
If you decide to pick up the service after your free month, it will cost you $79 US a year. So just what do you get for your money?
Prime includes a ton of Prime Instant Video, movies and TV shows that you can watch absolutely free. And, these shows aren’t the dregs either: there’s some pretty awesome entertainment included in Prime Instant Video. You also get free two-day shipping on millions of items and overnight shipping for only $3.99. Not every item offered on Amazon is eligible for Prime, but enough are that it's a wonderful savings in time and money over the course of a year. In fact, you can probably pay for your membership with the free shipping on the first two or three orders you place, and getting your Prime-eligible stuff in only two days every time is super sweet.

The ease with which digital content can be shared online, in addition to its many benefits, has created a host of problems for today’s high school and college students. All too often, students are uploading, updating, posting and publishing without giving a second thought to who might see their content or how it might be perceived.
lol…OMG! provides a cautionary look at the many ways that today’s students are experiencing the unanticipated negative consequences of their digital decisions – from lost job opportunities and denied college and graduate school admissions to full-blown national scandals. Usually ships in 24 hours A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come. Questions for Randy Pausch We were shy about barging in on Randy Pausch's valuable time to ask him a few questions about his expansion of his famous Last Lecture into the book by the same name, but he was gracious enough to take a moment to answer. (See Randy to the right with his kids, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe.) As anyone who has watched the lecture or read the book will understand, the really crucial question is the last one, and we weren't surprised to learn that the "secret" to winning giant stuffed animals on the midway, like most anything else, is sheer persistence.
Amazon.com:I apologize for asking a question you must get far more often than you'd like, but how are you feeling? Pausch:The tumors are not yet large enough to affect my health, so all the problems are related to the chemotherapy. I have neuropathy (numbness in fingers and toes), and varying degrees of GI discomfort, mild nausea, and fatigue. Occasionally I have an unusually bad reaction to a chemo infusion (last week, I spiked a 103 fever), but all of this is a small price to pay for walkin' around. Amazon.com:Your lecture at Carnegie Mellon has reached millions of people, but even with the short time you apparently have, you wanted to write a book. What did you want to say in a book that you weren't able to say in the lecture? Pausch:Well, the lecture was written quickly--in under a week. And it was time-limited. I had a great six-hour lecture I could give, but I suspect it would have been less popular at that length ;-). A book allows me to cover many, many more stories from my life and the attendant lessons I hope my kids can take from them. Also, much of my lecture at Carnegie Mellon focused on the professional side of my life--my students, colleagues and career. The book is a far more personal look at my childhood dreams and all the lessons I've learned. Putting words on paper, I've found, was a better way for me to share all the yearnings I have regarding my wife, children and other loved ones. I knew I couldn't have gone into those subjects on stage without getting emotional. Amazon.com:You talk about the importance--and the possibility!--of following your childhood dreams, and of keeping that childlike sense of wonder. But are there things you didn't learn until you were a grownup that helped you do that? Pausch:That's a great question. I think the most important thing I learned as I grew older was that you can't get anywhere without help. That means people have to want to help you, and that begs the question: What kind of person do other people seem to want to help? That strikes me as a pretty good operational answer to the existential question: "What kind of person should you try to be?" Amazon.com:One of the things that struck me most about your talk was how manyotherpeople you talked about. You made me want to meet them and work with them--and believe me, I wouldn't make much of a computer scientist. Do you think the people you've brought together will be your legacy as well? Pausch:Like any teacher, my students are my biggest professional legacy. I'd like to think that the people I've crossed paths with have learned something from me, and I know I learned a great deal from them, for which I am very grateful. Certainly, I've dedicated a lot of my teaching to helping young folks realize how they need to be able to work with other people--especially other people who are very different from themselves. Amazon.com:And last, the most important question: What's the secret for knocking down those milk bottles on the midway? Pausch:Two-part answer: 1) long arms 2) discretionary income / persistence Actually, I was never good at the milk bottles. I'm more of a ring toss and softball-in-milk-can guy, myself. More seriously, though, most people try these games once, don't win immediately, and then give up. I've won *lots* of midway stuffed animals, but I don't ever recall winning one on the very first try. Nor did I expect to. That's why I think midway games are a great metaphor for life. Business Plus
Usually ships in 24 hours INSIDE APPLE reveals the secret systems, tactics and leadership strategies that allowed Steve Jobs and his company to churn out hit after hit and inspire a cult-like following for its products.
If Apple is Silicon Valley's answer to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, then author Adam Lashinsky provides readers with a golden ticket to step inside. In this primer on leadership and innovation, the author will introduce readers to concepts like the "DRI" (Apple's practice of assigning a Directly Responsible Individual to every task) and the Top 100 (an annual ritual in which 100 up-and-coming executives are tapped a la Skull&Bones for a secret retreat with company founder Steve Jobs).
Based on numerous interviews, the book offers exclusive new information about how Apple innovates, deals with its suppliers and is handling the transition into the Post Jobs Era. Lashinsky, a Senior Editor at Large for Fortune, knows the subject cold: In a 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled The Genius Behind Steve: Could Operations Whiz Tim Cook Run The Company Someday he predicted that Tim Cook, then an unknown, would eventually succeed Steve Jobs as CEO.
While Inside Apple is ostensibly a deep dive into one, unique company (and its ecosystem of suppliers, investors, employees and competitors), the lessons about Jobs, leadership, product design and marketing are universal. They should appeal to anyone hoping to bring some of that Apple magic to their own company, career, or creative endeavor.
