(The Help)
『It is rare to find such a beautifully written novel. I paced myself while reading it, just to be able to enjoy it a while longer.』

(Interesting Plot, Excellent Characters, Great writing)
『The Help is set in Jackson, MS at the beginning of the civil rights movement. It is told from three points-of-view, starting with Aibileen, who speaks in the dialogue of an undereducated black housekeeper. It's a little off-putting at first to read Aibileens's chapters, but worth getting used to because she is a great narrator. Another narrator is Minny, the outspoken, younger best friend of Aibileen and a housekeeper who has a hard time staying employed due to her outspokenness, but who needs to work to support her large family. Skeeter is a white college graduate, unmarried and unable to find love or happiness or even a place to fit in. The three let us glimpse into their worlds as they work together to write a book about the world of black maids and their white bosses, a venture filled with danger for all of them.

Stockett does a great job of creating plausible characters for this story. There are pretty clear lines drawn around the oppressed and the oppressors, but very few of the characters are one-dimensional. Most are quite developed and believable. She fills the plot with enough drama and suspense to keep it interesting and moving along.

This is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. I hated for it to end and would love to find out what came next for the heroines in this story.

(Great work of fiction)
『The author writes with such familiarity with the times and Mississippi itself that you feel like you are inside the novel. I felt that I could see, hear, and feel Mississippi (although I have never been there). The novel takes place in a time before I was even born, 1963-1964. It was a blast from the pre-me past.

I loved all of the characters and they were so well developed that I cried, laughed, and felt fear with them. I was proud of their strengths and was astonished at the cruelty of some.

I absolutely loved how the maids helped to write the book. Help, that showed the plight of the maids in Jackson, MS in 1963. When a story of hardship exists it needs to be told and shown to everyone.

I am the author of Summer Born: A Life With Cerebellar Ataxia and Dreams in August: Life, Love, and Cerebellar Ataxia』

(The Help)
『The Help was one of the better books that I've read in the last several years. (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the Best) I grew up in the 60's and lived in the North, so I didn't witness the treatment of black women housekeepers. I did witness and protest the quota system for blacks in the LCMS University in Northern Indiana. I was shocked by that system in a christian college. Ms Hilly got her just desserts in this book twice. Its a good thought provoking read.』

(The Help, an excellent book depicting the treatment of Black maids during the '60's as the civil rights movement was emerging.)
『Though this is a fiction book written by a non-Black, the author skillfully depicts what life was like for Black women and men in the years before, during, and after they gained their civil rights. Those prejudices still exist in many circles and this book is an excellent reminder that the pursuit for equality is not over.』

(trust your instincts)
『Good murder, mystery, and mayhem. Immediately empathized with Patrick, torn between helping catch a killer or spend time bonding with a teenager.
He chose the path of least resistence. After their experience together, Tessa will happily want to spend time with her boring grandparents.
I liked all of the group, except Margaret-don't trust her. I guess I'll have to continue with the trilogy to see if I'm right about her.』

(fun, but definitely gory parts)
『Not for the faint of heart. Generally a well-crafted, entertaining read. I'm pretty demanding when it comes to this genre, and I'll buy his other books. I read this one as a freebie kindle, and rarely have I had any desire whatsoever to read any other books buy the featured free authors.

Christian book or Christian author? Huh? I have no idea how this book got characterized that way, but I'm happy to say that in no way, shape or form did I see it in that light. So, if you're scared off by the "Christian" label, don't be.』

(The Best Free Read Ever!)
『Having downloaded this from Amazon as a digital read for my iPhone for free, I didn't expect to be hooked and almost unable to "put down the phone". The characters were interesting and believable, intelligent to a fault. Looks like I will be paying for the next two books in this trilogy. I just hope that Pat's personal relationships are further developed. I loved that the author explored philosophical/religious topics without preaching. Having read books like The Silence of the Lambs, I was not unprepared for the gore and cruelty that another reviewer so objected to. If you don't want to read about real life crime and "man's inhumanity to man", confer with your local librarian and he will send you to the little chairs area for your reading pleasure.』

(Fantastically excellent read)
『Ok, you might be able to tell from the title of the review that I liked it. I'm a bit picky although I read a lot and I'm a published author. Nevertheless, this story has all the elements - serial killers, forensics, engaging characters, fast moving and intricately constructed story, a goth teenager and cats. The writing is so engaging as to be itself invisible, and that, to me, is the sign of great writing. Highly recommended.』

(Great Read (And not that gory as some suggest))
『Well done for a first time thriller by the author. I found some of the character traits a bit overdone. For example, the palate for coffee that the protagonist has. Just a bit over-the-top for me.

Otherwise and interesting ride that predictably picks up the pace towards the end, albeit with a few unpredictable twists and turns.

Looking forward to The Rook.』

『Special Agent Patrick Bowers had only met one man who made him truly afraid. Until now. When he's called to North Carolina to consult on the case of an area serial killer, he finds himself in a deadly game. Cunning and lethal, the killer is always one step ahead of the law, and he's about to strike again. It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop this man who calls himself the Illusionist. And just when the pieces start to come together, Bowers realizes they're not quite adding up. Can he unravel the pattern and save the next victim? Or will the Illusionist win the game by taking one of his opponent's pieces? Thrilling, chilling, and impossible to put down, The Pawn will hold suspense lovers in its iron grip until the very last page.』

(King Is On Fire Again!)
『UNDER THE DOME is an incredibly long journey (1,000 + pages!) hinged together by some very simple concepts, but it works like a charm. I'm happy to report that Stephen King is back, and better than ever- the man's writing is on fire again, especially after a few novels that, while good, just didn't seem to measure up to his well-known and loved capabalities (including LISEY'S STORY, CELL, and DUMA KEY). Don't get me wrong- those are good books, just not MASTERPIECES- like UNDER THE DOME.

DOME feels like it could've come from King's late '70's or '80's heyday and really reminded me, in many ways, of classics like IT, THE MIST, THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, and THE STAND. Not that it 'copies' any of these per se, but the sheer abandoned enthusiasm that you feel resonating off the pages is just so evident with DOME- you feel it from the opening chapter and it makes the book extremely addicting once you start it. You just won't want to stop reading- so be sure to have plenty of time available when you start this classic, epic tome.

The story is simple- a small Maine town is encompassed by an invisible force field, cutting it compeltely off from the rest of the world. No way in, no way out. The Army, the Government...the world...must just watch helplessly, like the town residents are goldfish in a bowl. All rescue attempts fail, including a full-fledged missle attack on the mysterious force field that has encompassed its five mile radius.

Even though there are wicked, supernatural forces at work when the 'why this has happened' is revealed, this is truly a back story when compared to the evil that some of King's characters do. In particular, there's town selectman, used car salesman, religous zealot, and meth drug dealer Big Jim- who pretty much tries to become the dictator of the isolated city, no matter who gets in his way. His actions---and the townsfolks' misinformed reactions--are pretty much what propels the novel into NEEDFUL THINGS territory, not to mention a soaking bloodbath. Things then curve kinda sorta into STAND territory where you have good guys and bad guys separating and declaring war on each other, with an offshoot group in the middle that seem to have their own psychotic agenda, also rooted in the kind of misinformed Christianity that seems to permeate politics and people so much these days.

The twist on the implied 'stand-off' is that although the war does come, it doesn't necessarily come in the way you think it will, which is actually part of the genius of this novel. Everything seems to be set up for a Randall Flagg-ish battle but...someTHING happens and changes the course of events and there's a point where you absolutely don't know what direction things are going to go in or if ANY of the characters will survive this catastrophe, which makes this thing all the more a riveting page turner. Things may not go exactly the way you wanted- or hoped for- but that's life- real and imagined- right?

King's classic descriptions, vivid characterizations, and candid (21st Century)observations are intact here- and seemingly more relevant and urgent than ever. With Big Jim, what we get is a sobering allegory of what politics in America has become today, and because it rings so true, it makes it that much more scary, shocking...and sad, of course. Even the well-rounded good guys in this novel have skeletons in the closet, many of them caused by the corruption of our nation. King nails it all between the lines, essaying the boilerplate madness into an amazing paradox of where we really are now.

It's these deeper things that the novel is steeped in that make it shine so brilliantly and really, make it so very scary. What it boils down to is that the evil and corruption inside man himself sometimes knows no boundaries and when push comes to shove, killing becomes as easy as breathin' (to crib a line from RAMBO there).

Sharp, intelligent, gory, poignant, brilliant, thrilling, sad, and breathtaking---UNDER THE DOME is all of these and more. Check it out and see for yourself- King is back and he's taking no prisoners this time around!

(AWESOME)
『I pre-ordered this book and received it on Tuesday. I just finished it 6 days later (pretty long for me but I do have to work sometimes... lol) and am in awe of Stephen King once again. I've read almost every single of his books and I have to put this one up there with some of his absolute best, like The Stand and The Talisman. I am not going to go into the plot or any details, I'll just say reading this book was like being on the way up to the top of the tallest roller coaster ride. At points I felt like I was almost out of breath at the insane thrill ride. I felt like his characters were real to me and the story was so deftly plotted. Yes he foreshadows, as many people have mentioned in their reviews. I would have to say that if you don't like that, you might never want to read ANY Stephen King book, as he is the master at foreshadowing. I never felt as if it took away from any of the surprises in the book. It just made me want to read faster to find out what happens. I will admit that i occasionally skim over words or a paragraph or 2 in some large books just to get to my destination faster, or because certain parts are a tad bit boring, and I never felt the need to do that in this one.

Lastly, kudos to his editors. Any book over a thousand pages long must be hell to edit and I ALWAYS notice typos. They jump right out at me and it irks me to no end. There was not a typo in this book. Excellent work! The cover is also breathtaking. Another masterpiece from one of my absolute favorite authors.』

(A must read . . .)
『This book was a real page turner. I expected nothing less from Stephen King. He is the master at creating unique characters and usually has a compelling plot for your enjoyment. Under the Dome has both . . . fascinating characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can. My favorite part of Under the Dome were the lessons that readers can take from this story. We all can learn to be better to others, especially in times of crises. I felt that Mr. King was spot-on in this book with how a society would react if faced with this situation.

As for the ending . . . yes I understand how some people are upset with it, but I felt it was just right for the story. Overall, Under the Dome is a great book and a "must-have" for your Stephen King collection.』

(Speculative fiction, horror, suspense, mythology, and existentialism all in one.)
『I'm writing this, in part, to address some of the negative reviews: it's almost like there is a family of several different Stephen Kings. The first writes the horror that has made King the most famous. (The Shining, Carrie, Misery, It); his cousin writes mystery novels (Duma Key); a distant uncle writes long, involved post-apocalyptic fiction (The Stand); and an aunt-in-law writes modern speculative fiction (his short story collections).

This is a book for all of them, but most of the horror is in the first 100 pages when people (spoiler) are running into the walls of the dome that comes down around a Maine town. After that, it's kind of Lord of the Flies meets No Exit and Last House on the Left.

The story weaves an enormous amount of not-too-thinly-veiled liberal left-wing political commentary into intrigue, small-town violence, and Steve McQueen-type action. More than most of King's work, this is an incredibly political book. Many of the book's crises are centered around the town's leaders--who stupidly won't take orders from the President of the United States. One of King's less swift characters describes the president as,"a monkey." This is brave, and very satisfying.

Who would like this book: fans of the non-horror-writing Steven King; people who are liberal or liberal-leaning; fans of Orson Scott Card-type science fiction (it has humanist religion overtones); existentialists; people who love corgis; and, western fans--there are gun battles, too.

Who wouldn't like this book: people who are very politically conservative will find this offensive; fans of King's horror-only novels; finally, it's over 1,000 pages long, so, that's bad for some folks, although it might make a stylish doorstop.』

(What a page-turner!)
『I'm not going to recap the story in my review, since others have done so very skillfully. What I will say is I've been a King fan forever, and this was one of my favorite books by him. I just could not put the darn thing down until I finished it.

If you buy it, plan to have a weekend set aside to read it cover to cover. You won't want to stop - trust me!』

AN INCREDIBLE UNABRIDGED AUDIO VALUE…OVER 35 HOURS ON ONLY THREE IPOD-READY MP3 CDS!

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as the dome comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

This MP3 CD edition will not play on traditional CD players, but is perfect for transferring to iPods and other portable MP3 players. It will also play on your computer or MP3 CD player.

Amazon Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan ReviewsUnder the Dome

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan share their enthusiasm for Stephen King's thriller,Under the Dome. This pair of reviewers knows a thing or two about the art of crafting a great thriller. Del Toro is the Oscar-nominated director of international blockbuster films, includingPan's LabyrinthandHellboy. Hogan is the author of several acclaimed novels, includingThe StandoffandPrince of Thieves, which won the International Association of Crime Writer's Dashiell Hammett Award in 2005. The two recently collaborated to write the bestselling horror novel,The Strain, the first of a proposed trilogy. Read their exclusive Amazon guest review ofUnder the Dome:

The first thing readers might find scary about Stephen King'sUnder The Domeis its length. The second is the elaborate town map and list of characters at the front of the book (including "Dogs of Note"), which sometimes portends, you know, heavy lifting. Don't you believe it. Breathless pacing and effortless characterization are the hallmarks of King's best books, and here the writing is immersive, the suspense unrelenting. The pages turn so fast that your hand--or Kindle-clicking thumb--will barely be able to keep up.

You Are Here.

Nobody yarns a“What if?” like Stephen King. Nobody. The implausibility of a dome sealing off an entire city--a motif seen before in pulp magazines and on comic book covers--is given the most elaborate real-life alibi by crafting details, observations, and insights that make us nod silently while we read. Promotional materials referenceThe Standin comparison, but we likenUnder The Domemore to King's excellent novella,The Mist: another locked-door situation on an epic scale, a tour-de-force in which external stressors bake off the civility of a small town full of dark secrets, exposing souls both very good...and very, very bad.

Yes, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," but there is so much more this time. The expansion of King’s diorama does not simply take a one-street fable and turn it into a town, but finds new life for old archetypes, making them morally complex and attuned to our world today. It makes them relevant and affecting once again. And the beauty of it all is that the final lesson, the great insight thatis gained at the end of this draining journey, is not a righteous 1950’s sermon but an incredibly moving and simple truth. A nugget of wisdom you'll be using as soon as you turn the last page.

This Is Now.

Along the way, you get bravura writing, especially featuring the town kids, and a delicious death aria involving one of the most nefarious characters--who dies alone, but not really--as well as a few laugh-out-loud moments, and a cameo (of sorts) by none other than Jack Reacher. Indeed--whether during a much-needed comfort break, or a therapeutic hand-flexing--you may find yourself wondering, "Is this a horror novel? Or is it a thriller?" The answer, of course, is: Yes, yes, yes.

"...the blood hits the wall like it always hits the wall."

It seems impossible that, as he enters his sixth decade of publishing, the dean of dark fiction could add to his vast readership. But that is precisely what will happen...when the Dome drops.

Now Go Read It. --Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan

The Story Behind the Cover

The jacket concept forUnder the Domeoriginated as an ambitious idea from the mind of Stephen King. The artwork is a combination of photographs, illustration and 3-D rendering. This is a departure from the direction of King's most recent illustrated covers.

In order to achieve the arresting image for this jacket, Scribner art director Rex Bonomelli had to seek out artists who could do a convincing job of creating a realistic portrayal of the town of Chester's Mill, the setting of the novel. Bonomelli found the perfect team of digital artists, based in South America and New York, whose cutting edge work had previously been devoted to advertisement campaigns. This was their first book jacket and an exciting venture for them. "They are used to working with the demands of corporate clients," says Bonomelli. "We gave them freedom and are thrilled with what they came up with."

The CGI (computer generated imagery) enhanced image looks more like something made for the big screen than for the page and is sure to make a lasting impact on King fans.

(Great Book Definitely Worth Reading!)
『Wow! Where do I start? This is the first Randy Singer novel I've read, and I definitely was not disappointed. I know this is going to sound like somewhat of a cliche, but I really did not want to put this book down. And when I did have to put it down (I didn't have enough time to read it in one setting), I couldn't stop thinking about it. I kept wondering if Catherine really was insane, or if she was just being set up. I couldn't figure it out until I finally read the ending -- and, wow, was that a shocker!

My only small complaint is that it was just a little hard to follow at first. It seemed to sort of jump from one place to another without any explanation. But this is just a very small complaint, and once I got into the story, it was a lot easier to follow. This doesn't change my rating -- this book definitely deserves five stars!』

(Great book!)
『I was suprised at how good this book was! I chose it as my first experiment with Kindle. And ended up reading it almost straight through (so much for raking the leaves this weekend :)) I couldn't help but think of how well this would translate to the movie screen. Great thriller that keeps you wanting more .. from beginning to end.』

(Really nice surprise)
『I will read more by this author. Characters and situations were out of the ordinary and interesting. Great lite read.』

(a classic)
『I read this book many years ago and could not put it down..I just recently repurchased this book for my kindle for re-reading...I can't understand why they haven't made a movie out of it yet.』

(Outstanding Read)
『I downloaded this book to my Kindle because it was free, had generally good reviews and is a genre that I enjoy. It was a great read and I am now downloading a book or two of Mr. Singer's that are not free. (Amazon, you win again.) I have learned over the years that the killer is usually one of the characters we already know, and I had my bad guy figured out early. I'm almost always right, but this time, boy, was I wrong! Great book!』
『After a series of murders in Virginia Beach, newspaper reporter Catherine O'Rourke experiences disturbing dreams that detail each crime. To aid the investigation, she shares them with a detective working the case. But her plan backfires when she's arrested as the main suspect. Catherine turns to Las Vegas lawyer Quinn Newberg, a high-priced specialist in the insanity defense who believes Catherine may be suffering from dissociative personality disorder. Quinn knows that insanity cases are unpredictable, but nothing could have prepared him for this. To win, or even survive, Quinn needs more than his famed legal maneuvering—he'll need a miracle.』

(Lost Symbol)
『Great book, It was not as good as Angels and Demons, or the Danvi Code but a good read』

(Entertaining Read)
『The book follows his previous work in that it provides interesting factual information weaved into the story. The result is a book that is a page turner and you are rewarded with a few bits of knowledge that you get to keep. The only criticism I would have is that the story ended about 100 pages before the book did. The last part could have been left out of the story entirely or included in an epilogue for those who would be interested in a few more interesting factoids and philosophical ideas. So far Dan has used the his knowledge and imagination about the masons and the templars to write two wonderful books, I look forward to any future books... maybe involving the Sumarian's? or other ancient civilization as a natural progression to his writing style and interest.』

(sorry, but this is not a good book in any way at all)
『i loved da vinci code, but this is an attempt to rekindle that fire, and what it ends up with is a bunch of smoke and mirrors. once that part clears up you're at the end of the book, praying for some sense of recovery, but noooooo. it ends just as bad. i'm a very positive person, and usually find the good in most things. there's very little of that here.』

(The Lost Symbol is a great read.)
『Wow. Dan Brown just keeps getting better. There were a couple of times I was absolutely shocked with what he had written. I couldn't imagine where he would go next, but he pulled it off brilliantly.

What I especially liked about this book was the fact it was based in D.C. So when I visit there I can actually go see some of the artwork and statuary he was refereing to. Although the Da Vinci code was great, I don't expect to ever get to those landmarks in France that he talked about.

The background on the Mason's was fascinating too. Don't know how accurate his explanations are, but I'll bet the basics are pretty close, although I imagine the biggest secrets are not quite as he explained it.

Great read though. I sure enjoyed it.』

(What the heck just happened?)
『The book started off and read through as what I expected from Brown's two most recent novels, but the ending... such a cop out. I wouldn't recommend it as it was not worth the effort when all is said and done. Brown rode on the coat tails of his earlier work. I felt tricked and played.』

In this stunning follow-up to the global phenomenonThe Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown demonstrates once again why he is the world’s most popular thriller writer. The Lost Symbolis a masterstroke of storytelling--a deadly race through a real-world labyrinth of codes, secrets, and unseen truths . . . all under the watchful eye of Brown’s most terrifying villain to date. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, D.C.,The Lost Symbolaccelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale.

As the story opens, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned unexpectedly to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. Within minutes of his arrival, however, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object--artfully encoded with five symbols--is discovered in the Capitol Building. Langdon recognizes the object as an ancient invitation . . . one meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of esoteric wisdom.

When Langdon’s beloved mentor, Peter Solomon--a prominent Mason and philanthropist--is brutally kidnapped, Langdon realizes his only hope of saving Peter is to accept this mystical invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon is instantly plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations--all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth.

As the world discovered inThe Da Vinci CodeandAngels&Demons, Dan Brown’s novels are brilliant tapestries of veiled histories, arcane symbols, and enigmatic codes. In this new novel, he again challenges readers with an intelligent, lightning-paced story that offers surprises at every turn. The Lost Symbolis exactly what Brown’s fans have been waiting for . . . his most thrilling novel yet.

『Let's start with the question every Dan Brown fan wants answered: IsThe Lost Symbolas good asThe Da Vinci Code? Simply put, yes. Brown has mastered the art of blending nail-biting suspense with random arcana (from pop science to religion), andThe Lost Symbolis an enthralling mix. And what a dazzling accomplishment that is, considering that rabid fans and skeptics alike are scrutinizing every word.

The Lost Symbol
begins with an ancient ritual, a shadowy enclave, and of course, a secret. Readers know they are in Dan Brown territory when, by the end of the first chapter, a secret within a secret is revealed. To tell too much would ruin the fun of reading this delicious thriller, so you will find no spoilers here. Suffice it to say that as with many series featuring a recurring character, there is a bit of a formula at work (one that fans will love). Again, brilliant Harvard professor Robert Langdon finds himself in a predicament that requires his vast knowledge of symbology and superior problem-solving skills to save the day. The setting, unlike other Robert Langdon novels, is stateside, and in Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fascinating as Paris or Vatican City (note to the D.C. tourism board: get your "Lost Symbol" tour in order). And, as with other Dan Brown books, the pace is relentless, the revelations many, and there is an endless parade of intriguing factoids that will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Langdon and the guys fromMythbusters.

Nothing is as it seems in a Robert Langdon novel, andThe Lost Symbolitself is no exception--a page-turner to be sure, but Brown also challenges his fans to open their minds to new information. Skeptical? Imagine how many other thrillers would spawn millions of Google searches for noetic science, superstring theory, andApotheosis of Washington. The Lost Symbolis brain candy of the best sort--just make sure to set aside time to enjoy your meal.--Daphne Durham

(I pulled a Palin and quit, quit reading this book...)
『I'm a republican who regretfully gave Palin, her book, a chance. Bad idea, I'll never get those moments back. After about 30 minutes, it just dawned on me: Why am I reading this book? Palin's not particularly intelligent-she's not a theologian, philosopher, professor, lawyer, doctor, or any other sort of professional that may have something worthwhile to share-and she hasn't really accomplished much. She obviously can't manage her own family much less a state, heck she even quit as governor! Why? It's clear: to make money writing poorly written books. (I know, I know, she left Alaska for Alaska, but if she was truly interested in Alaska's best interests, don't you think that she'd be serving Alaska's causes instead of writing books and traveling around America and around the world giving speeches behind closed doors?). This book is boring reality t.v. on paper and it's amazing that it appeals to so many (scary world we live in).』

(A well written book that will let you get to know Sarah Palin)
『The invective abuse directed at Sarah Palin says much about her progressive detractors and their fear of her, but very little about who she really is. This book is a well written autobiography. It serves its purpose in letting the reader get to know the author. There is no overwrought creation myth as there is with Obama. Sarah's is a very normal small town American story. Her values are quite mainstream. What is extraordinary is her willingness to take on the progressive elite that has come to dominate the so called mainstream media, our elite universities, most non-profit institutions and now our Federal government. I respect her for that.

Critics have complained that the book has petty criticism aimed at her detractors. First, that is a fairly minor part of the book that appears in context as the story is told. Second, her need to tell her side of the story is perfectly legitimate. Third, the fact that her detractors have so little to go on that they focus on petty criticism is what creates the need to respond in the first place. I don't see that she inappropriately dwells on things like "Troopergate" in the book.

The 11 AP reporters assigned to fact check this book are another reflection on her detractors. Eleven reporters basically came up with nothing of substance, yet wrote news articles about it. In contrast there is virtually no press criticism/analysis of Obama's "Dreams" autobiography. Joseph Farah has convincingly documented a long list of misrepresentations and outright falsehoods in Obama's book. Christopher Anderson and Jack Cashill have produced considerable evidence that the terrorist Bill Ayers actually ghost wrote much of the "Dreams" book. Yet the AP and other news organizations uncritically fawn over Obama's book, some going so far as to claim he is one of the best writers to ever occupy the oval office. This despite no evidence before or since the book that Obama is anything more than a mediocre writer.

This book is really only the beginning of a story. I hope to hear much more in the future.』

(Credit where credit is due)
『Sarah Palin has at least one thing in common with Hilary Clinton besides gender. Neither of them is willing to credit their ghostwriter. I am certain that Sarah Palin herself had a great deal of hands on imput as to the structure as well as the content of this book, but the actual author is a woman named Lynn Vincent. Politicians are busy people, and I quite understand that they may need help in order to bring a book to fruition. But I distrust anyone who will not acknowledge that they have not produced a piece of work that they sign their name to.
That said, the writing is better than many bios that are produced quickly in the 'as told to' tradition. I dock it two stars for not having an index, another major point of annoyance.』

(Horrific on every level)
『The paper upon which this drivel is printed is worth more than the words themselves. What you'll find here is a self-promoting narcissist with no understanding of how government actually works. Save yourself precious time and money and stay away!! There's nothing to be gained by indulging this woman.』

(Excellent Read)
『From a very real person. A fantastic read from an extra ordinary human being. Will make an excellent world leader.』

One year ago, Sarah Palin burst onto the national political stage like a comet. Yet even now, few Americans know who this remarkable woman really is.

On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world.

As chief executive of America's largest state, she had built a record as a reformer who cast aside politics-as-usual and pushed through changes other politicians only talked about: Energy independence. Ethics reform. And the biggest private sector infrastructure project in U.S. history. And while revitalizing public school funding and ensuring the state met its responsibilities to seniors and Alaska Native populations, Palin also beat the political "good ol' boys club" at their own game and brought Big Oil to heel.

Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin wasn't a packaged and over-produced candidate. She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom was serving his country in a yearlong deployment in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs. Palin's hometown story touched a populist nerve, rallying hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to the GOP ticket.

But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her "refreshing" and "honest," a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin.

In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom's-eye view of high-stakes national politics—from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost.

Going Roguetraces one ordinary citizen's extraordinary journey and imparts Palin's vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth.

『This was a hidden gem!Was very impressed with author's ability to keep story flowing and interest peaked.I am glad I read the sample based off the reader reviews as they were correct with the high rating. Thanks Kindle readers.』

(Should be an Oprah book club book, but...)
『I have found that Oprah tends to pick very depressing stories, and this one actually had semi-happy ending, so Oprah probably wouldn't pick it. (Maybe she can make it into a made-for-tv movie when she starts that network of hers.) All kidding aside, I loved this book and highly recommend it. Just make sure you Kindle readers grab it while it is still free, but even if you missed that boat, consider shelling out some dollars for it. It would be worth it.』

(Great book!)
『I loved this boook! The author's grasp on characterization is very authentic!!! I also appreciated that it did not contain unnecessary violence or profanity.』

(Fantastic Read)
『I discovered this book when it came up free on the Kindle, and boy I'm glad I did. Fireflies in December is an amazing first novel, told in a memorable voice with imagery so vivid, I felt like I was experiencing the hot, sticky summer myself. Jessie was a great protagonist-- clever, funny and stubborn. She really grows up over the course of the novel. All the characters were well drawn, and the plot was fast paced and exciting from start to finish. I especially loved how engaging the southern dialect was, and I can still hear Jessie's smart mouthed drawl bouncing around in my head.

Definitely recommended, and though the edition I read was free, there's no doubt I'll be spending money on the sequel.』

(Well written, touching story)
『This is a very well written book. I loved the entire story. It was rich with character development and details. I think the subject matter is also very important. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.』
『Jessilyn Lassiter never knew that hatred could lurk in the human heart until the summer of 1932 when she turned 13. When her best friend, Gemma, loses her parents in a tragic fire, Jessilyn's father vows to care for her as one of his own, despite the fact that Gemma is black and prejudice is prevalent in their southern Virginia town. Violence springs up as a ragtag band of Ku Klux Klan members unite and decide to take matters into their own hands. As tensions mount in the small community, loyalties are tested and Jessilyn is forced to say good-bye to the carefree days of her youth.Fireflies in Decemberis the 2007 winner of the Christian Writers Guild's Operation First Novel contest.』

(Freakonomics felt empty and missed the point)
『This book is a far cry from teaching you how you alone can benefit from economics. On top of that, enough with the commentary already, where are the practical tools that can teach us effective economic thinking summarized in a one-to-ten bullet points list? The reason for it is that if you truly want to learn how to make money in this world or the stock-market you need to read the works of Toby Crabel, Linda Rasche or some other professional traders that make living trading the market daily. Their books are very expensive because they do not right for a living, but trade for a living. I had to go find them on Ebay or Amazon. However, their writing is more focused on the techniques and ways to profit and trade any security, any time. Being very successful in this space myself, it takes a real book from a real trader these days to impress me. Reading Super Freakonomics felt rather tired and there are at least 3 other books in the space already that have become best-sellers on the same pop-economics concept.』

(A little too Random)
『The authors were clearly over-leveraging the success of the first Freakanomics to sell this one. I found this one a bit empty-- taking their formula in a bit of a ridiculous direction...(walk drunk--drive drunk?)...is that normally the option?

It's random examples, comparisons and over-hyped stats rarely came full circle to some sort of point the average person could seriously consider....It seemed every time they started getting somewhere they contradicted themselves in the spirit of objectivity ruining the possibility of any valid perspective they could add to this hod-podge of information. Yes it makes you think...but doesn't supply a clear train of thought nor enough information to foster any type of conclusion. I can see where they were going they just never managed to get there.』

(Vary Good content, but not so good printing quality)
『I've just finished the book and the content is very good, in line with the 1st Freakonomics.

But I was quite disappointed with the quality of the pages as they are badly cut in the edge, showing different sizes -it seems they were cut "by hand". The problem did not prevent me from reading, but it made more difficult to "change pages".』

(Good, but not super great)
『Levitt and Dubner exposes another set of fascinating insights into human nature and mannerisms through economics, statistics and great storytelling. While the information presented was interesting and counter-intuitive, I found the book to be quite lean in material. I was hoping for more, but perhaps that`s why there may be a Doublesuperfreakonomics some time in the future.

Solid read, but wish there were more.』

(Great Read)
『This book, like the first one, makes you think outside of the box.

This isn't supposed to be the definitive answer to global warming or too child safety.
But it does make one consider and to look past all the politicking by Corporations, Scientists, and (of course) Politicians.

They don't consider themselves saviors or even to be the final answer. I see them as trying to liberate us from our self proclaimed boxes.

And that's what they do for me.』

Answers and Scoring
Question 1
B, Cable and satellite TV. Women with television were less willing to tolerate wife beating, less likely to admit to having a“son preference,” and more likely to exercise personal autonomy. Plus, the men were perhaps too busy watching cricket.

Question 2
A, Saturday nights are the most profitable. While Friday nights are the busiest, the single greatest determinant of a prostitute’s price is the specific trick she is hired to perform. And for whatever reason, Saturday customers purchase more expensive services.

Question 3
C, One factor that doesn’t seem to matter is whether a doctor is highly rated by his or her colleagues. Those named as best by their colleagues turned out to be no better than average at lowering death rates--although they did spend less money on treatments.

Question 4
C, Leukemia. Chemotherapy has proven effective on some cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and testicular cancer, especially if these cancers are detected early. But in most cases, chemotherapy is remarkably ineffective, often showing zero discernible effect. That said, cancer drugs make up the second-largest category of pharmaceutical sales, with chemotherapy comprising thebulk.

Question 5
A, Inexpensive drugs. Expensive medical procedures, while technologically dazzling, are responsible for a remarkably small share of the improvement in heart disease. Roughly half of the decline has come from reductions in risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which are treated with relatively inexpensive drugs. And much of the remaining decline is thanks to ridiculously inexpensive treatments like aspirin, heparin, ACE inhibitors, and beta-blockers.

Question 6
False. Based on extensive data analysis as well as crash tests paid for by the authors, old-fashioned seat belts do just as well as car seats.

Question 7
B, Shifting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from red meat and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a vegetable-based diet achieves more greenhouse-gas reduction than buying all locally sourced food, according to a recent study by Christopher Weber and H. Scott Matthews, two Carnegie Mellon researchers. Every timea Prius or other hybrid owner drives to the grocery store, she may be cancelling out its emissions-reducing benefit, at least if she shops in the meat section. Emission from cows, as well as sheep and other ruminants, are 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide released by cars and humans.

Question 8
C, the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines discharged more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which acted like a layer of sunscreen, reducing the amount of solar radiation and cooling off the earth by an average of one degree F.

Question 9
C, doctors not taking sanitary precautions. This was the dawning age of the autopsy, and doctors did not yet know the importance of washing their hands after leaving the autopsy room and entering the delivery room.

Question 10
C, the psychological effect of the attacks caused people to increase their alcohol consumption, and traffic accidents increased as a result.
