Fighting about nothing and making her upset even though all my intentions were good. I had no clue why we were fighting. I wanted to do something about it, read a few pages of this book and then bought it myself. Great book, very stereotypical but everything fits in how I used to think. Never knew I was such an typical Man. :) Its primary focus is explaining our differences and it does it very good. Now I know why women are not logical, and why she is upset for no reason. :)
It also gives a method for dealing with your inner issues and feelings. Stuff you might not know you have until someone points them out. The book goes both ways, helping both men and women.

(Gender Totems) 『In this excellent and insightful book the author uses a device to show how at times men and women need to withdraw; a man goes to his 'cave' and a woman to her 'well'.
'Well' is certainly an appropriate talisman for the feminine but I do wish a symbol other than 'cave' could have been used to illustrate masculine behavior. In the context of gender cave is more in the way of a feminine symbol, while its connotations otherwise are not positive. 'Tower' is not only an obvious masculine symbol but is conceptually aligned with 'the' defining human process taking place in it, ie thought, while also being representative of the human achievement produced by that process.
So much of what is exposed in this book serves to delineate the unique qualities and status of women. To simply exist is all the justification a woman needs. This is very special and unpins why validation is so important. Men are compelled to 'do' because they have no other acceptable, bearing in mind who does the accepting, option. There can be no mistake or responsibility in existing while it is implicit in doing.』
(Great title, shame about the stereotypes) 『This is a book that trades heavily on the fact that some people, of both sexes, feel more comfortable when their prejudices and stereotypical thinking are externally validated by someone with a PhD. It undoubtedly has a great title, and this must in part account for its tremendous commercial success. It's also a fact (although one some feminists and 'new men' might prefer to deny) that many men and women really do conform to the worst gender stereotypes.
The problem with Gray's book is that he takes these statistical averages and tries to make them the basis for normative behaviour and self-help advice. In other words, rather than challenging the many gender-based rules and conventions that inhibit open and honest communication between the sexes, he tries a different approach, which is to tell people that, if they only made the effort to comprehend the roots of their partner's stereotypical behaviour,adjust to it and accept it, they could achieve a better mutual understanding. This may work for some people in some specific situations, but it misses the bigger picture. Most women don't want men who watch football on TV while they do all the housework; living with men like this is extremely tiring. Likewise, most men don't want women who spend their days in health and beauty salons while they go out to work in stressful, degrading jobs; women like this are extremely debilitating.
There is a desire on both sides to challenge and break down these gender stereotypes (and, inevitably, some who will resist this because their current domestic arrangements are just too comfortable). Those who desire real social change and a loosening up of gender boundaries will not be helped by Gray's book.』

This book would be helpful for any modern day man or woman who find certain words and behaviors of the opposite sex puzzling. It tries to advise the 2 genders into taking a more compassionate view to your partner's behaviors and words and gain empathy. Hopefully, you'd also learn to hone keener and more attentive listening skills.
I'll like to send this guide back through time, along with national marriage statistics, back to the Garden of Eden. Hopefully, Eve would read my package before she takes her first bite out of that fruit from the tree of knowledge. I'd also like to see this book be taught in schools.

(relevant for any age) 『I don't understand how some people gave it one star. This is definitely not a one star book. Some don't appreciate what SBB says at some points (especially spiritual stuff) and I understand that, but I think there is something in here that every woman can relate to, no matter what her spiritual beliefs are. I think this is a worthwhile read! I don't have much in common with SBB, I'm from a different generation, am reading the book more than 10 years after it was published, and I heavily dislike anything from the Victorian era. But having said that, there are some notable essays in here. Some argue that SBB is telling women to be selfish, materialistic and vain. I really have to disagree. I think her point is for us to take time out for ourselves because we spend so much time doing things for other people. I can't remember the exact quote but she says something like, if you don't take care of yourself... how can you take care of others? I mean she is not telling her readers to forget about everyone else, I am understanding that she just doesn't want us to forget to nourish ourselves. SBB attempts to cover all aspects of a person's life and yes that includes things like thrift shopping, taking baths and setting the table. But she reminds us that we can take deep comfort in the simple things in life and while you at it, why not try to look your best, get organized and try something new? Let your relationships take their course - no need to jump in to bed. I agree. Of course! Let's move on. Then the chapter on where to meet your soul mate (more on that later) was a crazy! Talk about hunting in all the wrong places! He suggests that if you don't like sporting events, go to sporting events. If you don't like the water, go to water events. i could go on and on here. Opposites attract to a point. I want to find someone who has their own interest, but also things we can share together! I've been with the Harley guy, the golfer, the sports fanatic! I don't care to pretend to like these things just to get a man! In the long run, you end up lonely or bored out of your mind because you have nothing in common. (and really don't care to hit the open road on a Harley, or spend 4 hours in the heat trying to hit a little ball with a club or getting hearded around at sporting events- because why? So he suggests you to be someone you are not. Not a good way to start a relationship. Save the other person from this drama! Another suggestion would be to date a person that a friend is no longer dating. Excuse me, but I don't cross that line. I would never date an ex of a friend. What are you thinking? I give one star for the areas of verbage - what not to say and what to say. Those were fun and quite good. Skim at the book store - not worth the $$.』

『A breakup, divorce, or loss of a loved one isn't just the end of your relationship with that person. It's a continuation of every feeling of abandonment you've ever suffered. It's the loss of a system of approval you'd come to depend on. The struggle, as Gray points out inStarting Over, isn't just to find a new partner, but to get over those feelings of abandonment or loss or anger or whatever else gets dredged up by the end of a relationship.
Perhaps the book's most crucial chapter posits that the best way to get over the loss of love is to focus on the "love" more than the "loss." That may seem impossible, especially if the bum took off with your best friend, your life savings, and your Lyle Lovett CDs, but Gray didn't get to be a household name because the advice in his Venus and Mars books doesn't work. Remembering only the bad parts, Gray says, leaves you with an important part of your emotional being closed to new business.
As for the Venus and Mars stuff, that comes in the second half of the book, when Gray looks at how men and women start new relationships from different points of view, with different priorities (a man might want to have fun with no strings attached; a woman might carry with her a lengthy list of requirements for her next partner, a list that excludes virtually all available men).
If you've never read Gray's work before, you have to be prepared to check your cynicism at the door. This is earnest stuff, but it's also based on decades of experience counseling clients. He's not one of those photogenic, nine-times-divorced shrinklets who's telling you how to conduct your relationships without any real clue of what makes love last. This is the real package: nothing glib, nothing quick and easy, nothing you could've figured out from a "Love Is..." cartoon.』
