I paced myself while reading it, just to be able to enjoy it a while longer.』 (Interesting Plot, Excellent Characters, Great writing) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The Help is set in Jackson, MS at the beginning of the civil rights movement. It is told from three points-of-view, starting with Aibileen, who speaks in the dialogue of an undereducated black housekeeper. It's a little off-putting at first to read Aibileens's chapters, but worth getting used to because she is a great narrator. Another narrator is Minny, the outspoken, younger best friend of Aibileen and a housekeeper who has a hard time staying employed due to her outspokenness, but who needs to work to support her large family. Skeeter is a white college graduate, unmarried and unable to find love or happiness or even a place to fit in. The three let us glimpse into their worlds as they work together to write a book about the world of black maids and their white bosses, a venture filled with danger for all of them. Stockett does a great job of creating plausible characters for this story. There are pretty clear lines drawn around the oppressed and the oppressors, but very few of the characters are one-dimensional. Most are quite developed and believable. She fills the plot with enough drama and suspense to keep it interesting and moving along. This is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. I hated for it to end and would love to find out what came next for the heroines in this story. 』 (Great work of fiction) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『The author writes with such familiarity with the times and Mississippi itself that you feel like you are inside the novel. I felt that I could see, hear, and feel Mississippi (although I have never been there). The novel takes place in a time before I was even born, 1963-1964. It was a blast from the pre-me past. I loved all of the characters and they were so well developed that I cried, laughed, and felt fear with them. I was proud of their strengths and was astonished at the cruelty of some. I absolutely loved how the maids helped to write the book. Help, that showed the plight of the maids in Jackson, MS in 1963. When a story of hardship exists it needs to be told and shown to everyone. I did witness and protest the quota system for blacks in the LCMS University in Northern Indiana. I was shocked by that system in a christian college. I'm happy to report that Stephen King is back, and better than ever- the man's writing is on fire again, especially after a few novels that, while good, just didn't seem to measure up to his well-known and loved capabalities (including LISEY'S STORY, CELL, and DUMA KEY). Don't get me wrong- those are good books, just not MASTERPIECES- like UNDER THE DOME. DOME feels like it could've come from King's late '70's or '80's heyday and really reminded me, in many ways, of classics like IT, THE MIST, THE TOMMYKNOCKERS, and THE STAND. Not that it 'copies' any of these per se, but the sheer abandoned enthusiasm that you feel resonating off the pages is just so evident with DOME- you feel it from the opening chapter and it makes the book extremely addicting once you start it. You just won't want to stop reading- so be sure to have plenty of time available when you start this classic, epic tome. The story is simple- a small Maine town is encompassed by an invisible force field, cutting it compeltely off from the rest of the world. No way in, no way out. The Army, the Government...the world...must just watch helplessly, like the town residents are goldfish in a bowl. All rescue attempts fail, including a full-fledged missle attack on the mysterious force field that has encompassed its five mile radius. Even though there are wicked, supernatural forces at work when the 'why this has happened' is revealed, this is truly a back story when compared to the evil that some of King's characters do. In particular, there's town selectman, used car salesman, religous zealot, and meth drug dealer Big Jim- who pretty much tries to become the dictator of the isolated city, no matter who gets in his way. His actions---and the townsfolks' misinformed reactions--are pretty much what propels the novel into NEEDFUL THINGS territory, not to mention a soaking bloodbath. Things then curve kinda sorta into STAND territory where you have good guys and bad guys separating and declaring war on each other, with an offshoot group in the middle that seem to have their own psychotic agenda, also rooted in the kind of misinformed Christianity that seems to permeate politics and people so much these days. The twist on the implied 'stand-off' is that although the war does come, it doesn't necessarily come in the way you think it will, which is actually part of the genius of this novel. Everything seems to be set up for a Randall Flagg-ish battle but...someTHING happens and changes the course of events and there's a point where you absolutely don't know what direction things are going to go in or if ANY of the characters will survive this catastrophe, which makes this thing all the more a riveting page turner. Things may not go exactly the way you wanted- or hoped for- but that's life- real and imagined- right? King's classic descriptions, vivid characterizations, and candid (21st Century)observations are intact here- and seemingly more relevant and urgent than ever. With Big Jim, what we get is a sobering allegory of what politics in America has become today, and because it rings so true, it makes it that much more scary, shocking...and sad, of course. Even the well-rounded good guys in this novel have skeletons in the closet, many of them caused by the corruption of our nation. King nails it all between the lines, essaying the boilerplate madness into an amazing paradox of where we really are now. It's these deeper things that the novel is steeped in that make it shine so brilliantly and really, make it so very scary. What it boils down to is that the evil and corruption inside man himself sometimes knows no boundaries and when push comes to shove, killing becomes as easy as breathin' (to crib a line from RAMBO there). Sharp, intelligent, gory, poignant, brilliant, thrilling, sad, and breathtaking---UNDER THE DOME is all of these and more. Check it out and see for yourself- King is back and he's taking no prisoners this time around! 』 (AWESOME) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I pre-ordered this book and received it on Tuesday. I just finished it 6 days later (pretty long for me but I do have to work sometimes... lol) and am in awe of Stephen King once again. I've read almost every single of his books and I have to put this one up there with some of his absolute best, like The Stand and The Talisman. I am not going to go into the plot or any details, I'll just say reading this book was like being on the way up to the top of the tallest roller coaster ride. At points I felt like I was almost out of breath at the insane thrill ride. I felt like his characters were real to me and the story was so deftly plotted. Yes he foreshadows, as many people have mentioned in their reviews. I would have to say that if you don't like that, you might never want to read ANY Stephen King book, as he is the master at foreshadowing. I never felt as if it took away from any of the surprises in the book. It just made me want to read faster to find out what happens. I will admit that i occasionally skim over words or a paragraph or 2 in some large books just to get to my destination faster, or because certain parts are a tad bit boring, and I never felt the need to do that in this one. Lastly, kudos to his editors. Any book over a thousand pages long must be hell to edit and I ALWAYS notice typos. They jump right out at me and it irks me to no end. There was not a typo in this book. Excellent work! The cover is also breathtaking. Another masterpiece from one of my absolute favorite authors.』 (A must read . . .) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This book was a real page turner. I expected nothing less from Stephen King. He is the master at creating unique characters and usually has a compelling plot for your enjoyment. Under the Dome has both . . . fascinating characters and a plot that keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can. My favorite part of Under the Dome were the lessons that readers can take from this story. We all can learn to be better to others, especially in times of crises. I felt that Mr. King was spot-on in this book with how a society would react if faced with this situation. As for the ending . . . yes I understand how some people are upset with it, but I felt it was just right for the story. Overall, Under the Dome is a great book and a "must-have" for your Stephen King collection.』 (Speculative fiction, horror, suspense, mythology, and existentialism all in one.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I'm writing this, in part, to address some of the negative reviews: it's almost like there is a family of several different Stephen Kings. The first writes the horror that has made King the most famous. (The Shining, Carrie, Misery, It); his cousin writes mystery novels (Duma Key); a distant uncle writes long, involved post-apocalyptic fiction (The Stand); and an aunt-in-law writes modern speculative fiction (his short story collections). This is a book for all of them, but most of the horror is in the first 100 pages when people (spoiler) are running into the walls of the dome that comes down around a Maine town. After that, it's kind of Lord of the Flies meets No Exit and Last House on the Left. The story weaves an enormous amount of not-too-thinly-veiled liberal left-wing political commentary into intrigue, small-town violence, and Steve McQueen-type action. More than most of King's work, this is an incredibly political book. Many of the book's crises are centered around the town's leaders--who stupidly won't take orders from the President of the United States. One of King's less swift characters describes the president as,"a monkey." This is brave, and very satisfying. Who would like this book: fans of the non-horror-writing Steven King; people who are liberal or liberal-leaning; fans of Orson Scott Card-type science fiction (it has humanist religion overtones); existentialists; people who love corgis; and, western fans--there are gun battles, too. Who wouldn't like this book: people who are very politically conservative will find this offensive; fans of King's horror-only novels; finally, it's over 1,000 pages long, so, that's bad for some folks, although it might make a stylish doorstop.』 (What a page-turner!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I'm not going to recap the story in my review, since others have done so very skillfully. What I will say is I've been a King fan forever, and this was one of my favorite books by him. I just could not put the darn thing down until I finished it. If you buy it, plan to have a weekend set aside to read it cover to cover. You won't want to stop - trust me!』 『 AN INCREDIBLE UNABRIDGED AUDIO VALUE…OVER 35 HOURS ON ONLY THREE IPOD-READY MP3 CDS! On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as the dome comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out. This MP3 CD edition will not play on traditional CD players, but is perfect for transferring to iPods and other portable MP3 players. It will also play on your computer or MP3 CD player. 』 『Amazon Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan ReviewsUnder the Dome Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan share their enthusiasm for Stephen King's thriller,Under the Dome. This pair of reviewers knows a thing or two about the art of crafting a great thriller. Del Toro is the Oscar-nominated director of international blockbuster films, includingPan's LabyrinthandHellboy. Hogan is the author of several acclaimed novels, includingThe StandoffandPrince of Thieves, which won the International Association of Crime Writer's Dashiell Hammett Award in 2005. The two recently collaborated to write the bestselling horror novel,The Strain, the first of a proposed trilogy. Read their exclusive Amazon guest review ofUnder the Dome: ![]() The first thing readers might find scary about Stephen King'sUnder The Domeis its length. The second is the elaborate town map and list of characters at the front of the book (including "Dogs of Note"), which sometimes portends, you know, heavy lifting. Don't you believe it. Breathless pacing and effortless characterization are the hallmarks of King's best books, and here the writing is immersive, the suspense unrelenting. The pages turn so fast that your hand--or Kindle-clicking thumb--will barely be able to keep up.You Are Here. Nobody yarns a“What if?” like Stephen King. Nobody. The implausibility of a dome sealing off an entire city--a motif seen before in pulp magazines and on comic book covers--is given the most elaborate real-life alibi by crafting details, observations, and insights that make us nod silently while we read. Promotional materials referenceThe Standin comparison, but we likenUnder The Domemore to King's excellent novella,The Mist: another locked-door situation on an epic scale, a tour-de-force in which external stressors bake off the civility of a small town full of dark secrets, exposing souls both very good...and very, very bad. Yes, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," but there is so much more this time. The expansion of King’s diorama does not simply take a one-street fable and turn it into a town, but finds new life for old archetypes, making them morally complex and attuned to our world today. It makes them relevant and affecting once again. And the beauty of it all is that the final lesson, the great insight thatis gained at the end of this draining journey, is not a righteous 1950’s sermon but an incredibly moving and simple truth. A nugget of wisdom you'll be using as soon as you turn the last page. This Is Now. Along the way, you get bravura writing, especially featuring the town kids, and a delicious death aria involving one of the most nefarious characters--who dies alone, but not really--as well as a few laugh-out-loud moments, and a cameo (of sorts) by none other than Jack Reacher. Indeed--whether during a much-needed comfort break, or a therapeutic hand-flexing--you may find yourself wondering, "Is this a horror novel? Or is it a thriller?" The answer, of course, is: Yes, yes, yes. "...the blood hits the wall like it always hits the wall." It seems impossible that, as he enters his sixth decade of publishing, the dean of dark fiction could add to his vast readership. But that is precisely what will happen...when the Dome drops. Now Go Read It. --Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan The Story Behind the Cover
The jacket concept forUnder the Domeoriginated as an ambitious idea from the mind of Stephen King. The artwork is a combination of photographs, illustration and 3-D rendering. This is a departure from the direction of King's most recent illustrated covers. Meet the Characters

On top of that, enough with the commentary already, where are the practical tools that can teach us effective economic thinking summarized in a one-to-ten bullet points list? The reason for it is that if you truly want to learn how to make money in this world or the stock-market you need to read the works of Toby Crabel, Linda Rasche or some other professional traders that make living trading the market daily. Their books are very expensive because they do not right for a living, but trade for a living. I had to go find them on Ebay or Amazon. However, their writing is more focused on the techniques and ways to profit and trade any security, any time. Being very successful in this space myself, it takes a real book from a real trader these days to impress me. Women with television were less willing to tolerate wife beating, less likely to admit to having a“son preference,” and more likely to exercise personal autonomy. Plus, the men were perhaps too busy watching cricket.Question 2 A, Saturday nights are the most profitable. While Friday nights are the busiest, the single greatest determinant of a prostitute’s price is the specific trick she is hired to perform. And for whatever reason, Saturday customers purchase more expensive services.Question 3 C, One factor that doesn’t seem to matter is whether a doctor is highly rated by his or her colleagues. Those named as best by their colleagues turned out to be no better than average at lowering death rates--although they did spend less money on treatments.Question 4 C, Leukemia. Chemotherapy has proven effective on some cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and testicular cancer, especially if these cancers are detected early. But in most cases, chemotherapy is remarkably ineffective, often showing zero discernible effect. That said, cancer drugs make up the second-largest category of pharmaceutical sales, with chemotherapy comprising thebulk.Question 5 A, Inexpensive drugs. Expensive medical procedures, while technologically dazzling, are responsible for a remarkably small share of the improvement in heart disease. Roughly half of the decline has come from reductions in risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which are treated with relatively inexpensive drugs. And much of the remaining decline is thanks to ridiculously inexpensive treatments like aspirin, heparin, ACE inhibitors, and beta-blockers.Question 6 False. Based on extensive data analysis as well as crash tests paid for by the authors, old-fashioned seat belts do just as well as car seats.Question 7 B, Shifting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from red meat and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a vegetable-based diet achieves more greenhouse-gas reduction than buying all locally sourced food, according to a recent study by Christopher Weber and H. Scott Matthews, two Carnegie Mellon researchers. Every timea Prius or other hybrid owner drives to the grocery store, she may be cancelling out its emissions-reducing benefit, at least if she shops in the meat section. Emission from cows, as well as sheep and other ruminants, are 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide released by cars and humans.Question 8 C, the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines discharged more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which acted like a layer of sunscreen, reducing the amount of solar radiation and cooling off the earth by an average of one degree F.Question 9 C, doctors not taking sanitary precautions. This was the dawning age of the autopsy, and doctors did not yet know the importance of washing their hands after leaving the autopsy room and entering the delivery room.Question 10 C, the psychological effect of the attacks caused people to increase their alcohol consumption, and traffic accidents increased as a result.Scoring 32-40: Certified SuperFreak 25-31: Freak--surprises lay in wait for you 16-24: Wannabe freak--you’ve got some reading to do 1-15: Conventional wisdomer--you’re still thinking in old ways』 『 SuperFreakonomics CD: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance > 『 SuperFreakonomics CD: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance > 『 What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures > 『 What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures > 『 The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine > 『 The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine > 『 Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) > 『 Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) > 『 Uncommon Sense: Economic Insights, from Marriage to Terrorism > 『 Uncommon Sense: Economic Insights, from Marriage to Terrorism > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government > 『 Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government > 『 Going Rogue: An American Life > 『 Going Rogue: An American Life > 『 Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies > 『 Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies > 『 Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine > 『 Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine > 『 America's March to Socialism: Why we're one step closer to giant missile parades > 『 America's March to Socialism: Why we're one step closer to giant missile parades > 『 The Christmas Sweater: A Picture Book > Glenn Beck

Such a statement is more than enough to bring in faithful readers of Patterson's most popular character. When you open the book, you get more than you bargained for as you're smacked from across the top of the flyleaf with this line: "THE BEST --- AND SCARIEST --- Alex Cross novel since ALONG CAME A SPIDER." If you were a fan of Alex Cross at one time and jumped off the train at some point in the past, I, ALEX CROSS is the station where you can get back on for a great ride. The novel kicks off --- following an enigmatic prologue --- with Cross in the middle of a birthday party that is interrupted by a telephone call. The news it relays brings the festivities to an abrupt end; the remains of a human body discovered that evening have been identified as belonging to a member of the Cross family. Cross sets everything aside to investigate the murder and quickly discovers that this family member had been living a secret life, one that involves employment in a very exclusive and expensive club operating under the innocuous name of "Blacksmith Farms." There, the very rich and famous of Washington, D.C.'s elite come to have any and all their needs and desires satisfied. Sometimes, those needs and desires for the club's valued members can include murder, with Cross's relative this time being the unfortunate victim. Soon it appears that he was not the only employee of the club who has been murdered. Cross, accompanied by police detective and love of his life Brianna Stone, finds that the investigation is leading them to the front doors of the Washington elite. Even worse, the proprietor of Blacksmith Farms has been engaging in a very lucrative --- and dangerous --- game of blackmail with the club's patrons. Cross is definitely on to something, yet there are almost invisible barriers that continue popping up and hamstringing his investigation. Meanwhile, disappearances and murders keep occurring in and around Washington, D.C. Rather than satisfy an unknown fiend's bloodlust, however, these new killings are being committed to conceal his identity. Cross is in the middle of his dogged investigation when the unthinkable happens: another of his family members suddenly becomes seriously ill. Determined not to lose another relative, Cross finds himself being pulled in two directions, even as the power elite close ranks around a certain key political figure who is pulling all the strings. Patterson has demonstrated time and time again that he is capable of just about anything, and here he cements his reputation. Big changes are about to occur in Cross's life, and, if the last few paragraphs are any indication, not all of them will be pleasant ones. That having been said, I, ALEX CROSS contains all of Patterson's trademark storytelling elements --- terse prose, emotional characters and graphic violence --- with some truly surprising events that will make this volume an especially popular winner with Patterson fans both new and established. --- Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub』 (One of the BEST Alex Cross books yet!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I own every Alex Cross books and this one ranks right up there with the best of them! In fact, not only did I write a scathing review of that book, but I seriously spent about 10 minutes trying to decide if I wanted to risk my money on this latest Alex Cross novel. However, I decide I would go ahead and risk it. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, I was absolutely delighted with the story and thrilled that Patterson was back in form with good fast paced writing that kept the pages turning with nary a single thought of putting the book down. Although admittedly I did a time or two in order to try and get some sleep, but it didn't work so I finished the book in one sitting. I especially liked the cameo appearance (so to speak) of another Patterson character in the Alex Cross novels and I am hoping that he will be a major player in an upcoming Alex Cross novel. Every Superman needs their Lex Luthor and this character is definitely that. And no, I am not going to give away the suprise ending. The basic plot of the story is that a loose family member (no pun intended, which you will understand within the first 30 pages or so) is found murdered and Alex Cross begins a perilous journey to find the family members killer or killers. Quite an interesting background of characters that I thought was rather well done, although I wondered just how realistic a couple of them really would have been. I am not going to give away any more than that, but it should be sufficient for me to say that being a HUGE Alex Cross/Patterson fan has me believing once again in the writing of this terrific author who needs to stick to solo projects and an already proven recipe for great stories and characters. Patterson: I truly love writing. I sometimes think about my grandfather when I reflect on this. When I was a boy, I lived in a town on the Hudson River. During the summers, my grandfather would take me once a week on his frozen food and ice cream delivery route. We'd be up at four in the morning packing up the truck, and by five we'd be on our way. Driving a delivery truck isn't the most glamorous job in the world, but every morning, my grandfather would drive over the Storm King Mountain toward West Point, and he'd be singing at the top of his voice. And he told me this: "Jim," he said, "when you grow up, I don't care if you're a truck driver or a famous surgeon—just remember that when you go over the mountain to work in the morning, you've got to be singing." Writing stories keeps me singing. Writing to me isn't work, and I like that a ton. Cornwell: What is your routine when you're facing your next novel? What is the process like for you, and what is your favorite part of it? Least favorite? Patterson: I like to have a lot of ideas in the air at one time. I've got around 20 manuscripts sitting in my office right now, in some degree of completion. It's a lot of material, a lot of stories. My least favorite part? Hmm. Maybe sharpening pencils? Actually, I’ve always kind of liked sharpening pencils. I don’t mean to seem too over the top about this, but I really wouldn’t change any of it. Cornwell: What do you and Alex Cross have in common? How are you different? Patterson: We're both family-oriented guys. I think it's a real treat to be able to get along with your wife every day, which I do; my wife and I really have trouble being apart for very long. And I think readers will agree Alex is generally doing better in the romance department. One difference between us would be that I'm much more content to sit around and write. I think Alex would get a little bored on a "ride-along" with me. Cornwell: What inspired you to create Alex Cross? Patterson: Hardly anyone knows it but when I started the first Alex Cross novel, Alex was a woman named Alexis. After 100 pages or so, I changed the character to Alex. When I was a kid growing up, my grandparents had a small restaurant and the cook was an African-American woman who eventually moved into our house. All through my growing up period I spent a lot of time with this woman's family. They were funny, wise, the food was great, so was the music, and the family is at least part of the inspiration for the Crosses. Cornwell: What's the one thing a reader has said that you've never forgotten and perhaps found startling? Patterson: I'm sure you've had this, too, Patricia, but the one comment that gets me every time is hearing people say my books have them reading again. I know sometimes you and I get some heat for being as popular as we are, and are saddled with that old equation that says if you're a bestseller, you must be lowbrow. But I frankly don't think there’s anything more meaningful than hearing that I've turned a person back into a reader (or in the case of younger readers, got them started). Cornwell: How about you? You're the one with all the movies! Good experience or not? Patterson: Sounds like we're on the same page there, Patricia. I definitely feel like some past projects didn't quite live up to their potential. And I likewise have hopes for a couple of movies in the works: the third Alex Cross movie, and the very firstMaximum Ridemovie, which has Avi Arad (producer ofSpider Man), Catherine Hardwicke (director ofTwilight), and Don Payne (writer forThe Simpsons) on board. There's also a very promising TV series based on a new book I've written that's being developed with CBS and Imagine. 』 『 I, Alex Cross > 『 I, Alex Cross > 『 Worst Case > 『 Worst Case > 『 Alex Cross's TRIAL > 『 Alex Cross's TRIAL > 『 Witch&Wizard > 『 Witch&Wizard > 『 Breathless: A Novel > 『 Breathless: A Novel > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) > 『 Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) > 『 New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) > 『 New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) > 『 Eclipse (The Twilight Saga) > 『 Eclipse (The Twilight Saga) > 『 Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) > 『 Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) > 『 Twilight (Two-Disc Special Edition) > 『 Twilight (Two-Disc Special Edition) > 『 The Host: A Novel > Stephenie Meyer
>price: Listening Library Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (One of the Worst supernatural romances ever written) ![]() 『I can't even express into words how strong my distaste for the entire Twilight Saga truly is. In my personal opinion Twilight is prefabricated, poorly written, shallow, demographic-forcing tripe. When I was a fourteen-year-old girl I was very obsessed with the vampire anti-hero Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. And though Lestat had many relationship issues he was still a better defined and more well conceived character than that of Edward Cullen. Edward and Bella are poorly thought out, two dimensional shells. This was a deliberate effort by the author so that every young reader could imagine themselves as the main characters but in the process she made them so superficial that the characters lacked any quality of definition. They did not feel like real people. Not only is Twilight poorly written but it also hinders upon actual mythology. The notion of vampires glittering in the sun is laughable at best. It brings to mind the recollection of such toys as the My Little Pony dolls. The logic behind vampires sparkling in the sunlight is non-existent. A vampire burning in the sun has been a staple of Gothic fiction for many years. There are real diseases and disorders in the world that make sunlight harmful to certain individuals. Scientifically it's more plausible to be harmed by sunlight than to 'naturally' sparkle in it. Another flaw in the mythos of Twilight is the definition of werewolf. I cannot tell you how many times I have come across Twilight fans who insist the characters who can turn into wolves are not werewolves. They say that these characters are shape-shifters. A shape shifter by traditional definition can take on multiple forms, not just one. Many Twilight fans also argue that within the mythos of the books a true werewolf only changes on the full moon and that's why Jacob and company are not actually werewolves. The parapsychology student in me winces at this. In many traditional werewolf folklore out of Germany and France there are werewolves that most certainly can change at will, are aware in their wolf form, and are not bound by the phase of the moon. The very word werewolf means man-wolf. It does not mean part man and part wolf. It comes from the notion of a man INTO a wolf. Most classic werewolf stories (before The Wolf-Man movie) had the werewolf changing from a person into an actual wolf. The very first werewolf legend can be traced back to the Greek myth of King Lycaon. According to legend King Lycaon served human flesh at a feast for Zeus (the king of the Gods). Zeus was so offended that he punished Lycaon by turning him into a wolf. Only his eyes remained human. This myth is where the terms Lycanthrope, Lycanthropy and the more modern Lycan come from. I guess it's safe to say Stephenie Meyer does not do her research in regard to the occult before writing these stories. Not only is Twilight poorly written and intellectually insulting to occultists (amateur and professional alike) but it also promotes very unhealthy relationships. Edward Cullen is abusive, stalkerish and obsessive. Edward has also had moments of physically harming Bella. Bella is equally so but that does not make it okay, nor does it make the relationship healthy. At one point Edward disables Bella's mode of transportation and has her kidnapped as a means to 'protect' her. If he was not a vampire this would be viewed as highly abusive of the character. There is a fine line between being chivalrous and sexist. Edward Cullen crossed that line miles ago. This sets a very unhealthy ideal of what defines romantic relationship for the young readers of Twilight. I am not saying not to read Twilight nor am I saying to burn the books. I am simply saying that it needs to be looked at in context for what it truly is and that there are far higher quality reads out there. If you want a chivalrous character who is NOT sexist, seek The Dresden Files novels by Jim Butcher. The hero, a wizard named Harry Dresden, is very chivalrous without being sexist. Bella is what modern writers call A Mary Sue. In fiction writing and role playing games Mary Sue characters are strongly frowned upon. A Mary Sue is a character of shallow quality who is nearly flawless. The character is so perfect that even her so-called flaws are endearing. I have run online text based role playing games since 1999 and I can tell you there are plot points in Twilight I would not have allowed in my game. A major one would be when Bella and Edward finally had their daughter toward the end of the book series the child aged extremely fast and by age seven or so she was involved with her mother's werewolf ex-boyfriend. To me this is disgusting. I would never have allowed this in my online role playing game. She might have developed with supernatural speed but she still has only had only seven-years-life experience and I feel that is certainly not enough time to be in a romantic relationship with a grown man. That was disturbing to me. Supernatural speed aging does not give her enough life experience for that sort of relationship. That was simply not right. In short Twilight is not what I would consider a good read even for those who truly love supernatural romances. See out the likes of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Twilight is not worth the time. There are higher quality works of fiction out there.』 (I usually get why girly things are attractive to the American female. . .) ![]() 『I get the gluttonous desire for shoes. She had the first one at that time, so she explained the summary, you know, girl falls in love with vampire boy. Bella...Edward...Hooblah. Then, whilst in the middle of walking down the hall to another class later that day, she said something about somebody coming through somebody else's window in the middle of the night? Hm. Curious. Once she'd finished, I borrowed it from her, and, was able to finish it within one or two sittings. The following three in the series, as well. (Just to let you know, before you judge me as one who didn't read the books. I've read all four. So there. Anyhow...) Not good. I've noticed that any GOOD book that I've read usually takes me at least a week or so to finish. Most of the time, even longer. There're actually things in the text of those books that make the reader want to fully understand what the author is trying to convey. Besides, I'm way too ADD to sit and read in one sitting while trying to elucidate all of the elements. Twilight? Er, no. It was one of the most NON-COMPLEX books I've ever read in my life. And that's saying something. I've been reading since I was three. The writing looked as if it had been done by a horny teenager who wrote fanfiction as a hobby in their spare time (and yes, I do read fanfiction, so I would know.) The characters, though I failed to notice it at first since I sped through the books, were, as others have said, indeed, quite flat. Edward was cold, hard, and marble-like, but gorgeous, and Bella was an outcast. Uh. Not. Last time I checked, outcasts don't have people flocking behind them like male dogs chasing after a pheromone leaking female with their tails in between their little legs. A lot of the pages were 'Edward, this, Edward, that,', which, if all of that unnecessary stuff had been taken out, might have thinned down the novel by a good 75%. And might have made it somewhat interesting, if it had a plot other than a problem that was solved in like, twenty pages. While the narrator was passed out. WHO DOES A FIGHT SCENE AND HAS THE NARRATOR PASSED OUT ON THE FLOOR???? WHAT??? Another thing that really bothered me, SPARKLY VAMPIRES? ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS, RIGHT NOW? Since when did a vampire ever friggin' sparkle?! I know you were trying to be novel and innovative, Meyer, but perhaps you should have tried that with your plain, flat, yet oh so perfect characters. Sparkly vampires don't do anything but piss us vampire lovers off.(And kill us on the inside, but you wouldn't know about that, now then, would you?)Whoever said that the Twilight series was better than Harry Potter should be hunted down in their sleep and shot point blank in the face. The characters have no depth, Bella Swan is a spineless, scarily obsessive, constantly whining teenager who makes Anakin look pleasant and Edward Cullen is beyond ridiculous. Supposedly the most beautiful man alive, who just can't stay away and is the best at everything. Bella CONSTANTLY has to be saved by Edward, supposedly because she is clumsy but more likely because she is extremely stupid. There's no reason for them to love each other, they're just intensely sexually attracted to each other. Great basis for a romance, Stephanie! And honestly, sparkly vampires? And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him. “I’D NEVER GIVEN MUCH THOUGHT TO HOW I WOULD DIE– I’d had reason enough in the last few months –but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this. . . . Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of something else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.” When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret. What Bella doesn’t realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, it might be too late to turn back. . . . Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful,Twilightwill have readers riveted right until the very last page is turned.』 『The book that started the phenomenon is now available in a deluxe collector's edition! The method of telling is confusing, compounded by the author's insistence of referring to her protagonist as 'he' in the middle of paragraphs where there are other characters to whom the pronoun would, under normal rules, refer. Her mastery of detail is excellent, but that seems to be all there is to the book--endless detail and lots and lots of internal monologue (philosophizing, going on and on about motivations) most of which is very tangential to whatever is happening in the story's present. There are unannounced flashbacks, side-steps, references to characters not introduced-- in short, the story weaves and ducks like a drunken prizefighter, but never connected with this reader. This is an excellent novel for those who abhor plot in any form. 』 (I want my money back from this book purchase) ![]() 『I eagerly looked forward to receiving this novel. Tudor history is a favorite of mine whether it be travel or text. This book was difficult to get into, the players poorly revealed and the writer's style of third person presentation very irksome. I have no argument with the facts; the detail is spot on. The presentation was a bore.』 (Not history's usual view of Cromwell) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『I too have read many a book - fiction and other - on the Tudors. Cromwell never came off as anything but a calculating opportunist. This book was fascinating to me in that Cromwell was lovable and Wolsey was downright charming. My Catholic headmaster frowned at me when he saw me reading this - I guess the Catholics don't like the less-than-flattering portrait of Thomas More. I'm not sure I'm behind all the characterizations, but SOMEONE must have loved the guy! It is fun to see one's notions of history turned upside down at times. And this book does it impeccably. I recommend it highly.』 (It Can't Be Helped) ![]() 『Although I have published several reviews on Amazon, I have not done a book review. I thought Wolf Hall would tell a straightforward story. Henry Viii did not have a male heir, decided to get rid of Katherine his long standing wife by annulling his marriage to her and in so doing change England and separate it from the Catholic Church which freed him to marry Anne Boleyn. Hilary Mantel who received the Man Booker Prize for this novel has taken this rather straight forward story and complicated it beyond credibility. It is told from or by Thomas Cromwell obfuscating it by reference to he. I slogged through to the bitter end and reached the conclusion that was almost as silly as this novel. Ms Mantel in her historical research should have read a bit of Shakespeare where my good old buddy Polonius states "Brevity is the soul of wit."』 (Brilliant and evocative Tudor history) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 『This worthy winner of the prestigious Man Booker prize for fiction makes a wonderful introduction to the turbulent history of Tudor England, spesifically Henry V111. Most unusual writing draws the reader right into the mind of Thomas Cromwell, an often maligned character. This book will absolutely keep you thinking, wondering and feeling glad you live today and not in 16 century England. Recommended for lovers of literary novels and not just historicals.』 『 In the ruthless arena of King Henry VIII’s court, only one man dares to gamble his life to win the king’s favor and ascend to the heights of political power England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years, and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. The quest for the king’s freedom destroys his adviser, the brilliant Cardinal Wolsey, and leaves a power vacuum. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell is a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people and a demon of energy: he is also a consummate politician, hardened by his personal losses, implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph? In inimitable style, Hilary Mantel presents a picture of a half-made society on the cusp of change, where individuals fight or embrace their fate with passion and courage. With a vast array of characters, overflowing with incident, the novel re-creates an era when the personal and political are separated by a hairbreadth, where success brings unlimited power but a single failure means death. 』『Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009:No character in the canon has been writ larger than Henry VIII, but that didn't stop Hilary Mantel. She strides through centuries, past acres of novels, histories, biographies, and plays--even past Henry himself--confident in the knowledge that to recast history's most mercurial sovereign, it's not the King she needs to see, but one of the King's most mysterious agents. Enter Thomas Cromwell, a self-made man and remarkable polymath who ascends to the King's right hand. Rigorously pragmatic and forward-thinking, Cromwell has little interest in what motivates his Majesty, and although he makes way for Henry's marriage to the infamous Anne Boleyn, it's the future of a free England that he honors above all else and hopes to secure. Mantel plots with a sleight of hand, making full use of her masterful grasp on the facts without weighing down her prose. The opening cast of characters and family trees may give initial pause to some readers, but persevere: the witty, whip-smart lines volleying the action forward may convince you a short stay in the Tower of London might not be so bad... provided you could bring a copy ofWolf Hallalong. --Anne Bartholomew』 『 Wolf Hall: A Novel > 『 Wolf Hall: A Novel > 『 A Place of Greater Safety: A Novel > 『 A Place of Greater Safety: A Novel > 『 The Children's Book > 『 The Children's Book > 『 The Glass Room > 『 The Glass Room > 『 Summertime: Fiction > 『 Summertime: Fiction > I wanted to buy It↑ タイトル『 True Blue > 『 True Blue > 『 Pursuit of Honor: A Novel > 『 Pursuit of Honor: A Novel > 『 Nine Dragons > 『 Nine Dragons > 『 Caught > 『 Caught > 『 I, Alex Cross > 『 I, Alex Cross > 『 The Scarpetta Factor > David Baldacci
