(Sorry, Glenn Beck is ruining America.)
『This book is intended purely as shock jocking. It's not anything but Glenn Beck shouting on paper. It's really ruining America to have divisive, fear-mongering, black-and-white Conservatives brandish their trash so freely. Rational, realistic people will find this book as ridiculous as I did. What a waste.』

(Glen Beck book)
『This man is too much. The book is great - especially in audio format. He is so right.』

(Perfect for ADD/HD people)
『I paid a lot more for this than what Amazon.com is selling it for, but it is worth every dollar. I couldn't put this book down. The way the content is presented makes you want to keep reading. The quality of the hardcover is excellent. The extra details on each and every page must have taken a long time to design and implement. It would make an excellent text book for grade schools. Humor combined with facts makes this a very interesting and enjoyable read. The endless pages of references at the back of the book are very nice. Angry, bitter and controlling people will not enjoy this book at all.』

(Beck still get it!)
『Every Glenn Beck book that I have read has been entertaining and informative. I have met Glenn and he is the same guy that you see or read. He is not PC and could never be a politician because he calls it as he sees it. This particular book has made me more informed regarding the issues of today. I would suggest this book to anyone regardless of your political views.』

(Glenn Beck: A Genius)
『What can I say? Glenn Beck says it all. He says things that everyone else is afraid to say because they think its to far out there. His book is well written with good research. A must read for any true conservative.』
『From Glenn Beck, #1 NYT bestselling author ofAn Inconvenient Book, Arguing with Idiots is the ultimate handbook to help confront political attackers.』

(Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dog Days)
『This book is as good, if not a bit better, than the first one of the series. The author has got his groove back. Fantastic fun!』

(Diary of a wimpy kid Dog Days)
『I like this book because it is funny and it's like comics. It is about this boy who doesn't want to go outside and his mom wants him to .』

(Dog Days)
『Jeff Kinney rocks these books are the best my son can't wait for the next book to hit』

(Reading is fun!)
『This is the fourth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and the the first one to take place during summer vacation, rather than during the school year. Greg Heffley manages to get into just as much shenanigans out of school as he does in school. Another extremely funny book.』

(The funniest book on EARTH!)
『This book is hilarious! Everyone will enjoy this book and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Enjoy!』
It’s summer vacation, the weather’s great, and all the kids are having fun outside. So where’s Greg Heffley? Inside his house, playing video games with the shades drawn.

Greg, a self-confessed“indoor person,” is living out his ultimate summer fantasy: no responsibilities and no rules. But Greg’s mom has a different vision for an ideal summer . . . one packed with outdoor activities and “family togetherness.”

Whose vision will win out? Or will a new addition to the Heffley family change everything?

(Sherlock Holmes - The Detective Guru)
『Sherlock Holmes has long been a favorite of mine. Nothing's changed. He still is. Excellent book, both in contents and appearance.』

(I love this stuff!)
『Classic! I'm very glad to own this book in it's Kindle edition and for a very reasonable price too, $0.00!
There is not anything that I could write that hasn't been written before about Mr. Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories are timeless, they are indeed short stories and may be read quickly in one sitting, and, for me, be read again and again.
While reading these stories I can't help but see and hear Jeremy Brett, the ultimate and best Holmes of any visual media. Ever! The mannerisms of Holmes as written by Doyle, as well as much of the dialog, are transferred accurately and brilliantly to the small screen by Brett, the BBC, and PBS. I also recommend this series on DVD for any and all Holmes fans.
Not to forget "The Return of Sherlock Holmes," also priced reasonably on Kindle at $0.00.』

(Holes)
『Super when I am on an airplane and have forgotten to turn on the wireless to pick up new books. Doyle never ceases to amaze and provide entertainment. I think I started reading Holmes in the 60s (early 60s) and have yet to stop. Good emergency book to have if you have a Kindle and enjoy deductive reasoning. easons to get it are elementary my dear reader!』

(Technical glitches in this Kindle edition)
『All of the numeric entries in the text are garbled, so if you don't care whether they're referring to 20 pounds or 3000, you'll be fine. of course it's a free download, so I'm not complaining.』

(Great Britian's Nineteenth Century History)
『English history is served up along with the amazing mystery stories. I enjoy the pictures of daily life...the maid bringing in lunch to Holmes on a pre-arranged schedule, passing the street vendors and beggars, imagining the opium den frequented by addicts, vivid descriptions of period clothing, transportation and commerce slipped seamlessly into the tales. I read this often to refresh the imagery in my mind.』
『The story of the world's most famous detective came to radio October 20, 1930, as a Monday-night NBC thriller for George Washington Coffee. Holmes had the distinction of being the most revived major character of the airwaves. These recordings were produced by NBC in 1955 for the BBC in London. Stories include "The Mystery of the Second Stain", "The Traitor", "Rare Disease", and "The Final Problem". September publication date. 2 cassettes. .』

(Fantastic)
『I was hooked when I picked up this book. It is an resolute must read. Don't bother listening to those lefties that make a living out of bashing anyone that doesn't think like them. I enjoyed reading through Bill's life stories, many of which have life lessons in them that have proved to help me in my own life. I don't agree on every front with Bill, but he can write a great book.』

(Oreilly is a joke)
『Bill Oreilly is a hack. I'm doing a review of his book because I know its all about bill. His ego is out of this world and he thinks the world revolves around him. I'm a conservative and oreilly plays to conservatives but bill I got news for you we don't want you! Before working for fixed news bill oreilly was the host of inside edition! That says all you need to know about what he stands for.』

(Not the gut busting book of unstoppable laughter I thought it would be.)
『I purchased this book as a gift for my Grandmother who had been scouring used and new bookstores in Salem, Oregon for months and months trying to find it, with no such luck. Everywhere family members looked it was sold out. And everwhere we asked about it we were told it was hard to find because it was such a darn good read. Well, the reviews were enough to hype Grannie up but all this word of mouth around us got us even more reved up to get our hands on it. Being the savvy girl I am, I went onto Amazon.com to find it and the reviews here seemed to be just as good as we read elsewhere. Grannie got her book within the 2 weeks promised and I sat back with a grin on my face anticipating her reaction...and was so surprised when I got it. It was "just okay" as she put it. Some parts are pretty funny, but as a whole it really wasn't what she thought it was going to be. She passed it on to my Mother, who after reading it, passed it on to other family members,...and on and on and on... but everyone had the same disapointed expressions and opinions about it. "It's really not as funny as I thought it would be." "One or two parts were pretty funny, but pretty disapointed in the rest. Its not at all what I thought it would be." Thats all I kept hearing over and over again. "not what I thought it would be," Granted, everyone has their opinions. SOme people might find it hilarious, but be prepared, its not the gut-busting book of unstoppable laugher that its been hyped up to be.』

(Book like new)
『I love buying books through Amazon. This book came in less than a week and was just like new. Even the cover looked new.』

(O'Reilly Reconsidered)
『I've never spent much time watching O'Reilly's show or read any of his books. The few times I had seen him I hadn't been particularly swayed by his message but now that I've read Bold Fresh, I've reconsidered O'Reilly.

Bold Fresh offers a look into what made this man the conservative he is; and in it I can relate to my own conservative upbringing. I can honestly say he makes a case for being conservative and not Republican where I would say some of the other Fox personalities may have begun to say so as a means to appeal to political moderates.

Bold Fresh is witty and fun, easy to read and provides and interesting look at the core of one of America's favorite news personalities. Who would have ever thought a person could become powerful and wealthy Doing Good and reporting those that don't?』

『The year was 1957, the month September, and I had just turned eight years old. Dwight Eisenhower was President, but in my life it was the diminutive, intense Sister Mary Lurana who ruled, at least in the third-grade class where I was held captive. For reasons you will soon understand, my parents had remanded me to the penal institution of St. Brigid’s School in Westbury, New York, a cruel and unusual punishment if there ever was one.

Already, I had barely survived my first two years at St. Brigid’s because I was, well, a little nitwit. Not satisfied with memorizing the Baltimore Catechism’s fine prose, which featured passages like “God made me to show his goodness and to make me happy with him in heaven,” I was constantly annoying my classmates and, of course, the no-nonsense SisterLurana. With sixty overactive students in her class, she was understandably short on patience. For survival, she had also become quick on the draw.

Then it happened. One day I blurted out some dumb remark, and Sister Lurana was on me like a panther. Her black habit blocked out all distractions as she leaned down, looked me in the eye, and uttered words I have never forgotten:“William, you are a bold, fresh piece of humanity.”

And she was dead-on.

One day in 1957, in the third-grade classroom of St. Brigid’s parochial school, an exasperated Sister Mary Lurana bent over a restless young William O’Reilly and said, “William, you are a bold, fresh piece of humanity.” Little did she know that she was, early in his career as a troublemaker, defining the essence of Bill O’Reilly and providing himwith the title of his brash and entertaining issues-based memoir.

And this time it’s personal. In his most intimate book yet, O’Reilly goes back in time to examine the people, places, and experiences that launched him on his journey from working-class kid to immensely influential television personality and bestselling author. Readers will learn how his traditional outlook wasformed in the crucible of his family, his neighborhood, his church, and his schools, and how his views on America’s proper role in the world emerged from covering four wars on five continents over three-plus decades as a news correspondent. What will delight his numerous fans and surprise many others is the humor and self-deprecation with which he handles one of his core subjects: himself, and just how O’Reilly became O’Reilly.』

『This particular edition is a children's version of Pride and Prejudice, not the true book: it is geared for readers age 9-12 and is only 48 pages long.A good way to intruduce youger kids to a classic and more loved by girls then boys in my opinion.

(great book bad digital edition)
『great book of course for any jane austin fan. this review is more for this kindle edition. i decided to buy the one dollar version after a few chapters because i do not like the repetitive use of dialog in all caps. it makes me imagine too much yelling. granted i do not know whether miss austin wrote it that way or the scribes of this digital book did. i just know i do not like it. if you are like me or unsure just get the sample first.』

(It is a truth universally acknowledged...)
『"Pride and Prejudice" is undoubtedly one of the most beloved classic novels in history -- it's had countless adaptations, sequels and homages lavished on it over the years.

And Jane Austen's grand opus is still beloved for a good reason. While it's rather stuffily written much of the time, it has a vibrant core of witty dialogue and strong characters that shine like lanterns in the night -- and the best part of it is the interplay between the two strong-willed main characters, whose initial dislike of one another blossoms into love once they learn how to overcome his pride and her prejudice.

The Bennett family is in an uproar when wealthy Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, and Mrs. Bennett is especially happy when he takes a liking to the eldest Bennett daughter Jane -- since their estate is entailed and there is no Mr. Bennett Jr., a good marriage is considered essential for at least one of the girls. But her forthright, independent sister Lizzie immediately butts heads with wealthy, aloof Mr. Darcy, who scorns the rural village and seems haughty about everything.

A flurry of proposals, road trips and friendships happen over the course of the following months, with Lizzie fending off her slimy cousin Mr. Collins, and befriending the flirty, hunky Wickham, who claims to have been wronged by Darcy. Lizzie believes Wickham's account -- and she's in for a shock when Darcy unexpectedly proposes, and reveals what Wickham won't tell her about both of their past lives, and what Wickham did to offend Darcy.

And finally things take a scandalous turn when Lizzie's idiotic younger sister Lydia elopes with Wickham, while staying with a friend in Brighton. The family is plunged into disgrace, which also wrecks any chances of a halfway decent marriage for the other daughters. The only one who can set things right is Darcy, who will do whatever he must to make amends to Lizzie -- and unwittingly establish himself as the man she loves as well...

Reading "Pride and Prejudice" is a bit like watching someone embroider a piece of cloth with subtle, intricate designs. Lots of balls, dances, visits and drawing room banter between Lizzie and virtually everyone else, and interwoven with some rather opinions from Jane Austen about haughty aristocrats, marriages of security, entailment, and the whole idea of what an ideal woman has (intellect and strength).

The only real problem: Jane Austen writes very much in the style of her literary era -- it's rather formal and stuffy much of the time, and the narrative is kept distant from the characters. So, not for casual readers.

But despite that formality, Austen's brilliance as a writer is evident -- she slowly unfolds the plot one act at a time, with several intricate subplots that tie together and play off each other. She also wrote some unbelievably sharp-edged dialogue with plenty of witty banter between Lizzie and Darcy ("I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine"). But Austen also weaves in startlingly romantic moments between them ("No one admitted to the privilege of hearing you, can think anything wanting").

It's hard to imagine a better fictional couple than Lizzie and Darcy, despite their rocky start (a major-league snub at a dance). Both are witty, smart, and a bit snotty in their own ways, with quick minds and even quicker tongues. Darcy is a selfish, rather haughty man man who gradually becomes warm and kind, while Lizzie is strong, independent, and Darcy's equal in every way. And neither will marry for anything but true love.

It also has a solid supporting cast: the painfully practical Charlotte Lucas, slimy clerics, virtuous-looking rakes, sisters ranging from saintly to snobby, and the lovable Mr. Bingley and perpetually optimistic Jane. Lizzie's family also adds plenty of color to the story, including the screechy and hilariously mercurial Mrs. Bennett and the barb-tongued Mr. Bennett ("Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do").

Despite its mildly stuffy style, "Pride and Prejudice" is the ultimate Jane Austen novel -- a powerful and romantic story about two people who grow and change because of love. An absolute must-read.』

(Very disappointed in the recording)
『I purchased this recording (read by Lindsay Duncan) through the iTunes store (something I will not be doing again), on the understanding that it was an unabridged recording. This is one of my favorite books, and I know it well enough to realize when sentences are being left out, which happened in several places (I did double-check with my print edition). At least one of the omitted sentences was important for understanding the characters.

The other quibble I have is that the recording I purchased consisted of two SIX HOUR tracks. Heaven help you if you lose your place while using an mp3 player.

I cannot dis-recommend this recording enough.』

(PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen)
『It is beneficial at times to step away from our classics of literature from time to time, to take them down from their high pedestals and look at them without pretension. No novel, no matter how well-regarded, is universally esteemed - Twain, Emerson, and Charlotte Bronte all savaged Pride and Prejudice in print - so let us, for a few moments, stop treating it as holy writ and just look at it as a novel, at how it holds up to a modern casual reader.

Pride and Prejudice (1813) is Jane Austen's novel of manners - it thoroughly explores the ins, outs and economics of nineteenth-century courtship. The novel's central character is Elizabeth Bennet, one of five daughters, whose family lives in a country village. Two wealthy, eligible bachelors move to town, and romance, confusion and animosity ensue.

Austen populates her novel with all manner of flawed characters. Many of them are annoying - that is, they behave badly and are antagonistic toward the main characters - but they all show at least some depth. No one here is without flaw, but no one here is without virtue, either (except Mr. Collins, the most ludicrous of them all). And this is why the novel works: because Austen treats her characters and their social milieu gently, delicately (well, except Mr. Collins). If she had done otherwise, if she had been more cutting, she would have lost the sympathy in the reader that many of these characters engender.

To the modern audience, Austen's plotting is rather sluggish, although it must be recalled that novels moved at a rather more leisurely pace then. At any rate it often seems that there is one too many side plots, or perhaps one too many visits to relatives, and there are patches that can be quite hard to get through. But you don't go to Austen for plot - you go to her for clever dialogue, for a delightful turn of phrase. That is what she thrives at, and that is what she is best remembered for. And in spite of the novel's overlength, Austen delivers a full and completely satisfying payoff. Rarely is a happy ending so fulfilling, and it may not be until the last few pages of the book that it becomes evident to the reader how masterfully Austen has set it up. And this is a large reason why the novel has such enduring appeal.

Much of the nuance in Pride and Prejudice may be lost on casual modern readers. For example, the character of Mrs. Bennet is the object of great scorn from many readers, and this has only been exacerbated by the film adaptations of the novel. But while marrying for love is the norm today, then, it was not; Mrs. Bennet is the only one looking out for the Bennet family's financial future.

Pride and Prejudice is, on the whole, a satisfactory and clever novel, and, at present, one whose merits are diminished mostly by readers too far removed to understand it in its fullness, or whose tastes have diverged too far.』

『Elizabeth Bennet is at first determined to dislike Mr. Darcy, who is handsome and eligible. This misjudgment only matched in folly by Darcy's arrogant pride. Their first impressions give way to truer feelings in a comedy concerned with happiness and how it might be achieved.』
『In a remote Hertfordshire village, far off the good coach roads of George III's England, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet -- a country squire of no great means and his scatterbrained wife -- must marry off their five vivacious daughters. At the heart of this all-consuming enterprise are the headstrong second daughter Elizabeth and her aristocratic suitor Fitzwilliam Darcy, two lovers in whom pride and prejudice must be overcome before love can bring the novel to its magnificent conclusion.』

(Started at 5 stars, then...)
『Like being at a nerdy cocktail party playing "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" with statistics, but without the cocktails. Great hook with the speculation that legalizing abortion resulted in decreased crime rate, but downhill from there as the comparisons become more labored and tedious. Couldn't bring myself to finish it.』

(Ok at best)
『Decent but the cool title probably has as much or more to do with this books popularity than anything.』

(Awesonomics)
『This book is a great book for anyone interested in economics. It takes you on a journey of unexpected correlations and defies conventional wisdom. The book shows you truths you never would of expected or thought of with bamboozling statistics and data. It is an easy, enjoyable book for ages 18-168. Also the book is not very long and keeps you entertained. Levitt and Dubner team up to be an awesome duo and they are by far some awesome economists. I high recommend it. Enough Said.』

(Must Own)
『Everyone and anyone should own this book. Humorous insight to the world from an economic point of view without using the wordy terminology.』

(A cool brain teaser)
『Want to look smart at a party? Need a perfect ice-breaker? Want to be witty and charming by "spontaneously" sharing few interesting and/but weird facts with your colleagues? This is a book for you.
It offers totally new insight to the facts that might seem to have nothing in common from the first glance, is witty and captivating - great book to relax on your free time, but still, with getting some intelectual stimulation.
My personal favourite chapter is about how names "determine" kid's future. Want to know more? You'll have to read it.』

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?

These may not sound like typical questions for an econo-mist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing—and whose conclusions turn conventional wisdom on its head.

Freakonomicsis a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: freakonomics.

Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt and Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. InFreakonomics, they explore the hidden side of . . . well, everything. The inner workings of a crack gang. The truth about real-estate agents. The myths of campaign finance. The telltale marks of a cheating schoolteacher. The secrets of the Klu Klux Klan.

What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

Freakonomicsestablishes this unconventional premise: If morality represents how we would like the world to work, then economics represents how it actually does work. It is true that readers of this book will be armed with enough riddles and stories to last a thousand cocktail parties. ButFreakonomicscan provide more than that. It will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

『Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds. InFreakonomics(written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship. Elsewhere, by analyzing data gathered from inner-city Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage. And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt inThe New York Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. In a book filled with bold logic, such back-patting veersFreakonomics, however briefly, away from what Levitt actually has to say. Although maybe there's a good economic reason for that too, and we're just not getting it yet.--John Moe

(Doesn't offer much)
『There are so many things I imagined _The Dude Abides_ being before I read it--a book of film criticism, a tongue-in-cheek "Philosophy of ..." sort of book, possibly even an out-and-out theology discussion. What I got, instead, is a shallow, surface-level summary with little in the way of valuable insights on the work of these fine filmmakers.

_The Dude Abides_ has one chapter dedicated to each of the Coen Bros.' 14 films. Here's what you get in each chapter:

* "The Forest," a brief introduction of sorts that sets the tone of the movie. This lasts 1 or 2 paragraphs.

* "The Trees," which is basically a film-school synopsis of the film. This can run anywhere from, about 6 pages (_Intolerable Cruelty_) to 10 pages (_No Country For Old Men_), with most being about 8 pages. And make no mistake, this is pretty much synopsis. While it carries the occasional aside or insight, it doesn't engage in deep analysis. If you've seen the film, there's a good chance you'll get bored quick.

* "The Moral of the Story," where the author offers what she thinks the film "means". These insights are often shallow, offering little more than you and your friends already figured out if you ever spent an afternoon talking about these films over lunch or during a long car ride. These are usually only a paragraph in length, sometimes two.

I am not kidding! Out of each approx. 10 page chapter, 80% is used up by film synopsis! And then in the end, she offers up her "Conclusions," which run about a page, and some Group Study questions such as ""After exploring the Coen's fourteen films, what do you think the brothers make of God?" These last are actually the most interesting part, and if Falsani had written a book answering them from her own perspective, it would have been a a far more interesting read.

Falsani is billed on the cover as an "Award-Winning Religion Writer" for her contributions to the Chicago Sun-Times, but whatever skill she has in reporting has not translated into the realm of film criticism, philosophy, and theology. I was able to read through this book in about half an hour, because apart from the final paragraphs and the occasional morsel elsewhere, there was very little I wanted to read.

Do not waste your time with this book.』

(That's just like, your opinion, man.)
『The cover of the book is a bit misleading as it's not so much a book about the Big Lebowski or the Dude. It's more of an analysis of the Coen Brothers' entire catalogue of films. Each one is broken down and summarized (though a little too thoroughly if you ask me -- it contains some spoilers) and then the author looks for deeper meanings and themes. Not sure I always agree, but it's interesting.

Overall, it would make a good companion piece to an actual study of the films themselves. If you are planning to take or teach a course on the Coens' filmography, then this might be a good text to consider.』

(Film and philosphy in one)
『Okay, it does give spoilers on all of the Coen Brother's films, so just skip to the films you have seen. This book is for film and philosophy lovers alike.

There are also pretty cool drawings through out the book. They have that Tim Bradstreet quality to them.』

(Not as deep as it sounds)
『I was very excited about this book just from the title. My husband and I have enjoyed many of the Coens brothers' movies and have often hashed out our views on the plots, characters, etc. When it arrived I dove right in...and was finished about an hour later. I was not really disappointed; I was ambivalent. While I was glad to have the synopsis available for the movies I had not seen, it seemed that more work was put in to each movie's synopsis than was put into the analysis.

I had hoped for deeper analysis, maybe bringing up good points about the plot or characters that I had not previously explored. Sometimes the analysis seemed very thin and at other times it seemed forced. The most interesting part for me was the forward by Rabbi Allen Secher; after finishing that part, I found there were times I had to push myself to keep reading.

If you are looking for a light primer on the movies of the Coen brothers, this is a great read. If you are looking for more in-depth analysis, you should keep moving on.

(A clever idea, a deeply knowledgeable writer--so why doesn't it work for me?)
『As a Coen brothers fan and a person interested in theology, my expectations may have been too high for this book. I thought I'd be finding the perfect marriage of serious analysis, fannish homage, and tongue-in-cheek humor. Instead, this dismayingly slim book recaps plots and offers intelligent but remarkably brief interpretation. Yes, Falsani knows her stuff, but it is as if the book is deliberately glancing in how it handles potentially rich topics. If this is by design, to keep the book light and quick to read, then she's done her job. But I hoped for more.』
『Join award-winning author and columnist Cathleen Falsani as she explores the serious existential questions raised in the movies of the wildly popular and always irreverent Coen brothers. Coen fans and film lovers will appreciate Falsani's unique blend of contemporary insight and spiritual discernment that is both entertaining and illuminating.』

(Not the kind of book you read for fun)
『This book was sent by a great seller however, it is not an uplifting read. I can usually handle sad books but this book is just horribly frustrating from start to finish. Maybe this is what the author hoped to achieve and if so, she succeeded. However, I don't read in my free time with hopes that the books will depress me.』

(A Happy Ending)
『Jeanette Walls's Glass Castle was a compelling story that is both familiar and unfamiliar to the common reader. Her real life horror story ultimately renews faith in human beings. Despite the horror these kids face throughout their childhood, they get a fairy tale happy ending. Glass Castle makes you wonder if you could survive an upbringing like this one and live to tell about it.
The memoir begins with meeting the Walls family living in a dilapidated trailer of a home. Jeanette's earliest memory is of cooking hotdogs at the age of three and badly burning herself with boiling water. What a terrible first memory to have. What kind of lucid parents would allow their three-year old to cook on a stove? These kinds of horrible stories occur throughout the book, and are why the book is so interesting to read. The average person isn't familiar with that sort of neglect therefore Glass Castle familiarizes you with what it would be like to be part of a family like Jeanette's. It's hard to sympathize with parents who have potential to provide a stable lifestyle for their family but refuse to act upon it. Rex was a mastermind with his hands, holding down jobs as an electrician, and drawing up architectural plans for the "glass castle". Jeanette's mother Rose Mary had a college degree for teaching but refused to hold down a stable career because it simply bored her. The book was difficult to put down because it constantly kept you guessing what kind of ridiculous things you'll come across next.
The memoir, familiar to the reader, shows us a family that is trying desperately to live the American Dream while going through trials and tribulations. What's not relatable to the reader, the fact that they screw it up every single time. The kids became very acquainted with a practice known as the "skedaddle." This was something Rex invented to run from the government who wanted to collect taxes and wanted payments on bills. The family bounced from Arizona, to California, and to West Virginia. In all these places they had a chance to start over, but all of these dreams were shattered when the parents started back on their old ways. Readers can sympathize with struggle and failure, yet the parent's malfunction in providing for their children time and time again becomes irreconcilable. The one redeeming quality of the novel is that the family tries desperately to stick together even when it's bad for them. Even when the kids were at points of near-starvation, they would always find a way to stay on their feet by working together. Whether this meant holding down odd jobs, or scrounging for food in school trash cans, they managed to get by. This is an admirable trait, because ultimately the reader wants the family to make it through.
Glass Castle makes you realize that all the awful things you thought couldn't happen, can. Most parents have warned their children about perverts while not really believing it could happen. Here, it happens in many different ways. Phoenix was very hot during the summer. Rex and Rose Mary saw the only way to cool the house was by leaving the doors and windows open at all times, even at night. Perverts entered the house, Jeanette was molested by one, and the parents didn't even show concern at this disgusting act against their daughter, let alone agree to lock the door. Throughout the book instances of molestation or near molestation occur right under the parent's noses. How could you allow such a thing to happen to your children? This book opens your eyes as to the fact that these things have to be happening more so than we commonly think.
Throughout the book the family drags you through their living nightmare to finally renew your faith in a happy ending. In the middle of the squalor of Welch WV, Jeanette finds her true calling in. She becomes involved in her high school newspaper and falls in love with the idea of writing for a career. She vows to herself to get out of Welch and out of the hold her parents have on her terrible life. At this point in the novel you finally feel a little sense of relief that these kids will make it out. After raising money on their own, they flee their parents grasp and head to New York City. There they find jobs, and create relationships and families of their own. As a reader, we finally see a happy ending that justifies the struggle.

Glass Castle is a story of the redemption of a family and the struggle to live the American dream. It's a story of starting over and realizing that people regardless of their past can have a future. Despite having hell for a childhood, these kids bonded together and walked through fire and came out alive.

(Wonderfully engaging memoir)
『Ms Walls has written an amazing memoir. She tells her story with humor and without self-pity. This is one of those books that you tell everyone you know to read. It's one of those rare ones that I will keep and re-read. Great job! Looking forward to reading her other books.』

(Your first teachers.....)
『are always your parents. Jeannette Walls learned a lot from her parents, despite the hardships and abuse. Luckily she was able glean the positive lessons: to dream, from her father, and to pursue her artistic talents, from her mother. Her parents were obviously mentally ill people and I figure she knows that now but did not understand that as a child. Her fascinating memoir was fast paced and seems like a series of slides, making it somewhat shattered, like her life, but I could not put it down. The writing style is more journalistic than literary, but the story makes up for all that. While reading it I did wonder how she remembered all the early years, but I supposed that she and her siblings must have discussed them, they seemed believable. I recommend this book and I am not a fan of autobiography in general, though I did love Angela's Ashes and do plan to read The Liar's Club now.』

(Fantastic book)
『This book grabs your attention starting on page one, plus its very humerous; sometimes i would re-read parts because it was so funny!』
『Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor.』
『Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. InThe Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover.--Brangien Davis

(A Wonderful Life)
『I've been a long time fan of Patrick Swayze, but knew little about his wife, Lisa, other than they had met at Patrick's mother's dance studio. Reading this book made me feel like I was part of the family - Patrick and Lisa opened their entire lives to the public. As I read each chapter, I could feel the deep love and support they had for each other. My prayers are with Lisa now - to continue with the ranch they both loved so much... and hopefully to see more of her either on the stage, or directing.

Thank you for this chance to know an amazing couple.』

(Wonderful Read)
『This book is a great read for anyone who is a Patrick Swayze fan. Very enjoyable! I would highly recommend.』

(Loved it!)
『This is an amazing book about an amzazing person. I enjoyed every bit of it and admired the courage he had even at his darkest times. His marriage to Lisa is an inspiration and at the same time shows the real struggles of a lasting relationship.』

(Best Autobiography I Ever Read!!)
『I started reading this on a plane&could not put it down. From start to finish, it is an interesting&astonishing read. I am filled with such wonder&amazement at all the wonderful things Patrick Swayze did with his life. And that doesn't even include his courageous battle with pancreas cancer. He was a great football player til a knee injury put an end to that dream. Then he went to New York&became a dancer until that same knee injury squashed that dream. He was superb in gymnastics&at one time, b/4 the knee injury, had wanted to train for the Olympics. He then went on to become a famous actor&even a pilot! He could sing&was also a songwriter. He could ride horses, take any motor apart, could box with the best of them&very experienced with martial arts. He would research each&every acting part he had&even rewrite the scripts with his wife Lisa to make them the best they could be. He also was a faithful&adoring husband who loved his wife more than anything. I was SO impressed by this book&with this awesome man that could do anything! This is the reason you write an autobiography, when you've done great things to back it up.

The only thing I wish he would have admitted (&maybe he does, I still have about a dozen pages left) is that his 3 pack a day cigarette smoking&his heavy drinking throughout many periods of his life, is what he could have done differently&he may not have gotten pancreas cancer. Michael Landon also drank&smoked heavily&he died of the same disease. Patrick asks in the very beginning of the book what he could have done differently&why this happened to him&I think those 2 things are what happened. Anytime a person smokes that heavy&drinks heavy, they are not going to live to a ripe old age. Especially smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day almost their entire life. He would have ended up with lung cancer eventually anyway. My father died of lung cancer at 53 yrs. old&it's a terrible way to die. I don't understand why he never tried to give up the smoking.

This book is a wonderful book though&shows what a dedicated, kind, sensitive, loving, intelligent&generous man Patrick Swayze was. I wish he could have lived to a ripe old age. I have so much admiration for all the things he did with his life. I recommend this book highly, I just can't say enough good things about it. I could not put it down literally&every page was so interesting. He was one of the greatest men that ever lived&Lisa was a very lucky woman to have been so loved by this wonder of a man. He also could bear so much physical pain it was quite extraordinary. Sometimes it seemed he was almost super human. Rest in peace Patrick. You were a good man&I believe you have a place in Heaven one day. You made the world a much better place&your time to leave here was way too soon.』

(Awesome)
『I enjoyed the book very much. Patrick and Lisa were very honest and definitely shared intimate details of their long lasting relationship. The book flowed so smoothly that I read it in a matter of days. I remember seeing Patrick for the first time on TV in the mini-series North and South and thought what a great guy, both sensitive but also very masculine, plus easy on the eyes. Then after Dirty Dancing, well, what woman didn't find him sexy and attractive. I even named my second son, Patrick, after him, because I wanted a strong masculine name and also someone I admired. We all lost a great human being. I thank he and Lisa for sharing their story because it shows what a commitment they had for each other and their marriage, and even through the rough times, they managed to work it out. It is definitely a love story but not sappy. This was definitely an inpsirational story for me and am grateful to have read it.』
『In a career spanning more than thirty years, Patrick Swayze has made a name for himself on the stage, the screen, and television. Known for his versatility, passion and fearlessness, he's become one of our most beloved actors.

But in February 2008, Patrick announced he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Always a fighter, he refused to let the disease bring him to his knees, and his bravery has inspired both his legion of fans and cancer patients everywhere. Yet this memoir, written with wisdom and heart, recounts much more than his bout with cancer. In vivid detail, Patrick describes his Texas upbringing, his personal struggles, his rise to fame with North and South, his commercial breakthroughs inDirty DancingandGhost, and the soul mate who's stood by his side through it all: his wife, writer and director Lisa Niemi.

A behind-the-scenes look at a Hollywood life and a remarkable love, this memoir is both entertainment and inspiration. Patrick and Lisa's marriage is a journey of two lives intertwined and lived as one--throughout their years in Hollywood and at home on their working ranch outside Los Angeles, and culminating in the hope and wisdom they've imparted to all who know them. This book will open the door for families, individuals, and husbands and wives to grow, bond and discover entirely new levels of love and sharing, proving that life shouldn't be lived as a series of endings, but rather as the beginning of greater strength and love.』

(SuperDuperFreakonomics (to be followed))
『I bet we are just at the beginning of a series of Freakonomics publications. It will end when the marginal cost of writing and printing still another sequel falls below the potential readers' marginal willingness to pay. Read one book by Levitt&Dubner and you know all of them. I'm pretty sure there will be a chapter in the their next book on what Dan Brown and Mount Pinatubo have in common.

(Freakonomics felt empty and missed the point)
『This book is a far cry from teaching you how you alone can benefit from economics. On top of that, enough with the commentary already, where are the practical tools that can teach us effective economic thinking summarized in a one-to-ten bullet points list? The reason for it is that if you truly want to learn how to make money in this world or the stock-market you need to read the works of Toby Crabel, Linda Rasche or some other professional traders that make living trading the market daily. Their books are very expensive because they do not right for a living, but trade for a living. I had to go find them on Ebay or Amazon. However, their writing is more focused on the techniques and ways to profit and trade any security, any time. Being very successful in this space myself, it takes a real book from a real trader these days to impress me. Reading Super Freakonomics felt rather tired and there are at least 3 other books in the space already that have become best-sellers on the same pop-economics concept.』

(A little too Random)
『The authors were clearly over-leveraging the success of the first Freakanomics to sell this one. I found this one a bit empty-- taking their formula in a bit of a ridiculous direction...(walk drunk--drive drunk?)...is that normally the option?

It's random examples, comparisons and over-hyped stats rarely came full circle to some sort of point the average person could seriously consider....It seemed every time they started getting somewhere they contradicted themselves in the spirit of objectivity ruining the possibility of any valid perspective they could add to this hod-podge of information. Yes it makes you think...but doesn't supply a clear train of thought nor enough information to foster any type of conclusion. I can see where they were going they just never managed to get there.』

(Vary Good content, but not so good printing quality)
『I've just finished the book and the content is very good, in line with the 1st Freakonomics.

But I was quite disappointed with the quality of the pages as they are badly cut in the edge, showing different sizes -it seems they were cut "by hand". The problem did not prevent me from reading, but it made more difficult to "change pages".』

(Good, but not super great)
『Levitt and Dubner exposes another set of fascinating insights into human nature and mannerisms through economics, statistics and great storytelling. While the information presented was interesting and counter-intuitive, I found the book to be quite lean in material. I was hoping for more, but perhaps that`s why there may be a Doublesuperfreakonomics some time in the future.

Solid read, but wish there were more.』

Book Description

TheNew York Timesbest-sellingFreakonomicswas a worldwide sensation, selling over four million copies in thirty-five languages and changing the way we look at the world. Now, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner return withSuperFreakonomics, and fans and newcomers alike will find that the freakquel is even bolder, funnier, and more surprising than the first.

Four years in the making,SuperFreakonomicsasks not only the tough questions, but the unexpected ones: What's more dangerous, driving drunk orwalkingdrunk? Why is chemotherapy prescribed so often if it's so ineffective? Can a sex change boost your salary?

SuperFreakonomicschallenges the way we think all over again, exploring the hidden side of everything with such questions as:

  • How is a street prostitute like a department-store Santa?
  • Why are doctors so bad at washing their hands?
  • How much good do car seats do?
  • What's the best way to catch a terrorist?
  • Did TV cause a rise in crime?
  • What do hurricanes, heart attacks, and highway deaths have in common?
  • Are people hard-wired for altruism or selfishness?
  • Can eating kangaroo save the planet?
  • Which adds more value: a pimp or a Realtor?

Levitt and Dubner mix smart thinking and great storytelling like no one else, whether investigating a solution to global warming or explaining why the price of oral sex has fallen so drastically. By examining how people respond to incentives, they show the world for what it really is– good, bad, ugly, and, in the final analysis, super freaky.

Freakonomicshas been imitated many times over– but only now, withSuperFreakonomics, has it met its match.

Answers and Scoring
Question 1
B, Cable and satellite TV. Women with television were less willing to tolerate wife beating, less likely to admit to having a“son preference,” and more likely to exercise personal autonomy. Plus, the men were perhaps too busy watching cricket.

Question 2
A, Saturday nights are the most profitable. While Friday nights are the busiest, the single greatest determinant of a prostitute’s price is the specific trick she is hired to perform. And for whatever reason, Saturday customers purchase more expensive services.

Question 3
C, One factor that doesn’t seem to matter is whether a doctor is highly rated by his or her colleagues. Those named as best by their colleagues turned out to be no better than average at lowering death rates--although they did spend less money on treatments.

Question 4
C, Leukemia. Chemotherapy has proven effective on some cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and testicular cancer, especially if these cancers are detected early. But in most cases, chemotherapy is remarkably ineffective, often showing zero discernible effect. That said, cancer drugs make up the second-largest category of pharmaceutical sales, with chemotherapy comprising thebulk.

Question 5
A, Inexpensive drugs. Expensive medical procedures, while technologically dazzling, are responsible for a remarkably small share of the improvement in heart disease. Roughly half of the decline has come from reductions in risk factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which are treated with relatively inexpensive drugs. And much of the remaining decline is thanks to ridiculously inexpensive treatments like aspirin, heparin, ACE inhibitors, and beta-blockers.

Question 6
False. Based on extensive data analysis as well as crash tests paid for by the authors, old-fashioned seat belts do just as well as car seats.

Question 7
B, Shifting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from red meat and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a vegetable-based diet achieves more greenhouse-gas reduction than buying all locally sourced food, according to a recent study by Christopher Weber and H. Scott Matthews, two Carnegie Mellon researchers. Every timea Prius or other hybrid owner drives to the grocery store, she may be cancelling out its emissions-reducing benefit, at least if she shops in the meat section. Emission from cows, as well as sheep and other ruminants, are 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide released by cars and humans.

Question 8
C, the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines discharged more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which acted like a layer of sunscreen, reducing the amount of solar radiation and cooling off the earth by an average of one degree F.

Question 9
C, doctors not taking sanitary precautions. This was the dawning age of the autopsy, and doctors did not yet know the importance of washing their hands after leaving the autopsy room and entering the delivery room.

Question 10
C, the psychological effect of the attacks caused people to increase their alcohol consumption, and traffic accidents increased as a result.
