The villain of this piece, or the hero depending on your view, desires Emily and has an intense need to dominate and own her. He has played the game before, gone to a few bdsm clubs, but there has always been something missing. Passion. He sees Emily, an actress, on the big screen and knows she's the one. He kidnaps her and subjects her to all sorts of sadistic, kinky tortures, both physically and emotionally. He delights in breaking her down and he also finds equal pleasure in taking care of her after one of his sessions. He keeps Emily on her toes (literally) with his ever changing, potentially vicious moods and demands much more of her then her body and instant obedience. He wants her love. While one might argue that such a thing would be impossible, Emily finds herself leaning towards him, wanting him and yes, even desiring him. Even after he beats her to the point of unconsciousness, she awakes and gifts him with a smile. True, it's a small smile, but it's a start and it's all Mark needs. He isolates her, makes her dependent on him for everything, insulates her in his world, surrounds her. Despite all this though, he can never be sure if it's what Emily truly wants or if it's just the fear and the chains keeping her with him. The only way he can test her is to let her go and see if his love slave returns to him. While this fantastic story might not be for everyone, I really enjoyed it. Claire Thompson pushes the envelope as to how far we as readers can go, and how dark our desires run. It's an excellent, well articulated story, and not for the faint of heart!! *spoilers* * * * * There are scenes of abduction, bondage, gunplay, forced shaving, candle play, flogging, caning, piercing, branding, urination scenes, one latex scene, rape (both oral, anal and vaginal) and one forced enema scenes plus others. Not for the faint of heart, yet well written and quite erotic. I won't go into the plot as it's given in a previous review. This book did walk a fine line for me with Mark being quite sadistic emotionally towards Emily. I found that harder to deal with than the fairly brutal physical torments he devises for the poor girl. I relished the fact that his emotional cruelty finally backfires on him towards the end. I did wish Emily had had a bit more fight in her. She did seem to give in fairly quickly. I also couldn't help but wonder how she would hold up under such constant abuse or whether over time the "love" would outweigh the domination. One likes to think so. The book is fast paced and very explicit in the bdsm, but elevated above a lot of other bdsm books by getting into the minds of Mark and Emily and how their motivations change over time. I've read Claire Thompson before. I've even reviewed it. I actually read this as an ebook first. She's changed the title (Stalker) and expanded it. It's a much more satisfying read, though it was excellent the first time around. I have to admit, I'm not a big romance reader, so I don't read everything Thompson writes. But I LOVE her non-consensual BDSM stuff. This guy is obsessed with this movie star. He stalks her, kidnaps her and proceeds to try to turn her into his perfect, submissive sex slave. The action is intense and sometimes even brutal. But the weird thing, he actually loves her. And that love starts messing him up. He finds it isn't enough just to control her. He wants her to love him back. I like the way the author really explored both characters - what affected and motivated each of them. It wasn't a one-way story from the abductor's point of view. Her prose is beautiful, erotic and compelling and the scenes are hot, hot, hot, hot. Another scorcher by the Mistress of BDSM. Definitely a keeper. I can't speak about the book itself, but I am pleased with my ability to order all the books that she needed to complete out the series. She was elated to receiver her shipment of new books. No complaints! This was my first Bertrice Small's book and I have to say I love it. Although not quite 5 stars since I thought there could be a little more dramas to it. I do enjoy the Channel, it's a different world, a world that I'm sure we women need from time to time. Wouldn't that be divine? I can imagine my own story already. *sigh* As for the hero and heroine... I have to say I absolutely love Ashley. She sounds pretty sexy and daring and not to mention a woman worthy of being called a woman. She's successful and will be damn to let anyone take what she put so much heart and effort into, even if he is her dead relative. As for Ryan? One word: Sizzling Hot! Ok that was two but two perfect description! I'm glad I found and read this book first before going back to read Forbidden Pleasure. I would so hate to miss out on a good book. I really liked this book. Great adventure as typical of Bertrice Small. I can't wait for the other Border Lord books to come out. I would have to say that by far Bertrice Small is my favorite author. According to her grandfather's will, Ashley Kimbrough has until her 35th birthday to get married or else she loses her inheritance. Her attorney's cousin, who is also an attorney, has a male client in the same predicament. The attorneys decide to set up a meeting between these two to see if they hit it off. I won't tell you the rest because it is pretty predictable and I don't want to ruin it for you if you choose to read it. Betrice Small is one of my all time favorites, but the "Pleasure" series has been a huge disappointment to me. Sure the other two, Private&Forbidden Pleasures were not that bad, but I had to literally force myself to finish this book. The main focus of this book wasn't even "The Channel". Sure she flicked it on, but hardly. I skipped over the sex scenes and I almost never ever do that in any book! I mean why read Erotica if you're not interested in reading about sex??? Anywhoooo, read it if you like, but don't say I didn't warn you! This book was A LOT better than 'Forbidden Plessures' (terrible book). I think it's the best book in the 'Pleasures' series. What is more intriguing than an over 5,000 years old mummy waking up in contemporary NY, even if this plot is as old as time ? Not to mention that the mummy, King Seti, is such a hunk, with a touch of vulnerability. And of course pairing this hunk with Logan, a nerdy young assistant curator, is just the right ingredient for a hot romance. Both Seti and Logan are likable characters. Add to that Logan's closely knitted group of gay friends, some really bad guys all out to get Seti's blood, a hellish revengeful demonic god and a most amusing Osiris, King of Hell itself, we have a highly imaginative and entertaining fantasy, with some pretty hilarious moments. There are some sad moments too. However I wish there are more chapters devoted to the development of Seti's and Logan's romance. Not at the expense of the plot of course, but a longer story as to me, this is first and foremost a love story between the majestic King and his newly found soulmate who is the replacement of a long lost love. I read this in ebook form and loved it. I've re-read it several times. I want this in paperback because I know I'll see Kiernan Kelly at DragonCon 2008 and I want her autograph. I got this book based on other books from this specific publishing company. They've never let me down. This book was no exception...what started off as kind of strange became interesting and eventually hard to put down. The characters are great and likable, and it's the kind of book that has you cheering for the lovers till the end. The villains are both other worldly and real worldly...it makes it an interesting blend. This book is amazing and had moments that made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes and made my 30 minute break into a 40 minute one...by accident ^_^; It's just that good! Get this book and be impressed...this is an author that I hope to see more from in the future and possibly a sequel! I was ready to write this fabulously glowing review about Nancy Madore's take on The Twelve Dancing Princesses but in reading the reviews I got a little discouraged cause they are all pretty good. One more thing I would add is this would be a really good book for couples working out the kinks in their relationship. There were so many really good ideas for both the guys and the gals. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! I bought this together with Nancy Madore's other erotic fairy tale Enchanted as recommended by Amazon. Both were outstanding but surprisingly different. The tale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses is very relationship oriented while the fairy tales in Enchanted are more for the single girl maybe? I don't know. I am single and I enjoyed both books. Nancy Madore's writing style is pleasant and not at all garish or tacky like some erotica you can find sometimes. It seemed more romantic. Kind of Victorian. The stories were definitely a turn on, but I have to admit, as I kept reading I was more interested in where the author was going with them next. These books were so cleverly written. Once I knew what was going to happen I would go back and read the story again and enjoyed it even more. This was especially true with the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Each princess has her own story. The story starts out with her secret problems with having sex with her husband (some are upset because they can't you know...not sure how to say it on Amazon, but just for all different reasons and some have other problems). These were all problems that regular women would relate to by the way. So as you're reading you're thinking, what the heck is she going to do for this one. But then afterwards you think, brilliant! I feel like I actually learned something from that book. But then in Enchanted you have more focus on kinky sexual fantasies. There are many ideas that get you thinking in Enchanted too. Madore has some interesting things to say about beauty and the body. But mostly, you are getting fantasy, fantasy and more fantasy. The stories were nicely diversified and you didn't feel like you got the same thing twice. Both books are clever, fun, sexual, and are pageturners, but if I were going to pick just one it would have to be the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Either would make a good gift for that woman who loves to read. I agree that this is one of the smartest books of erotica I have found to date. The story is great and the sex is hot and juicy. The writing is what blew me away though. Its whats said between the lines. The erotica touches on relationships and communication. It was put together really thoughtfully. This would be a very good book for couples to read together in bed. It seems like such a girly book, but as a man who's half way into it, I find it witty&fun to read. It's a nice warm up tool.
